Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14126CXW 14-Inch Laptop (White)

Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14126CXW 14-Inch LaptopI picked up this laptop a few days ago and here are my initial impressions. This is my first experience with Windows 8 and so far, I'm not a fan but there is little I can do about that. As a whole I like the laptop. It feels sturdy, build quality is what you would expect of a VAIO. Everything has a matte finish but the screen for whatever reason. The computer feels speedy enough, though because of my lack of time with Windows 8, I really don't have anything to base that on. What stands out the most is the trackpad. It is one solid piece (think magic mouse), so to click you need to press down. I am definitely not fully used to it yet and I'm kind of iffy towards it because it doesn't always register right clicks. It does however feature several sets of multifinger gestures that work pretty well (though scrolling was inverted as standard for whatever reason).

All in all, I like the laptop. The keyboard feels good and I've run it for almost three days straight and it has remained surprisingly cool. If you are not a fan of Windows 8, there are several programs that can restore the Windows 7 functionality you're used to (I'm currently using ClassicShell). I'll try to get back to add an update.

After 1 week of use:

Good Laptop for work Design (Graphic Design Industrial Design). (Run perfectly Adobe Suite Cs6, Adobe Lightroom 4, Autodesk Inventor Professional 2013, 3DsMax 2013. For Renders run perfectly Luxion Keyshot 3.0 or Vray for 3dsmax. The Processor i5 helps in rendering speed, complex scenarios perhaps need a long time but perform well, Intel HD4000 its ok, maybe not the best graphics card (integrated graphics) but works well with these programs.

Pros: (Outside: good appearance, nice exterior design. Price under 700$ Windows8 (fast boot starting) Core I5 IvyBridge Widescreen, nice brightness Backlit Keyboard Sound Xloud, Battery life (up 3 hours working without plug)

Cons: Touchpad it's too sensitive (for design i recommend a bluetooth mouse with 3 buttons) Only CD/DVD RW drive Only 1 usb port 3.0 around 2.2 kg weight for a 14" laptop.

NOTE: Purchased from Venezuela, brought with LibertyExpress, Estimated Time Shipping and Handling: 3 weeks (too expensive Vzla customs tax, but still much cheaper than the price in Bs).

Hello.

I was going to buy a MacBook Pro for $1100 (that's with the student discount), but then I read online that if you want an alternative, that the Sony Vaio is a good alternative. Weren't lying. I would go w/ the E series. It has all the internal hardware that the latest Mac has for about 1/3 the price. 14 inch screen = not too big, not too small. It goes toe-to-toe. I paid $470 for mine, w/ free shipping (bought it used, but it was just like new). Its a good deal. The battery is excellent (5 hours), especially if you don't have use the highest brightness for your screen (especially during the day, just open the blinds).

It does not come with Microsoft Office, or a starter version. That is extra. However, a FREE alternative is OpenOffice by Apache. It does the same thing as MS Office. Windows 8 took me a couple days to get used to. Just spend a couple hours playing around with it. No big deal. I'll get MS Office Pro 2013 with my discount from work (I just didn't feel like downloading it at the moment).

I'm using my laptop for computer programming, and I'm going to add drafting and animation software later. With that being said, I save my actual files to a USB (for space). Although, I could very well save my files to the computer without any problem. My computer operates at the same speed.

Don't get sucked into the Apple craze, especially if you are a penny-pincher like myself. They are good computers though.

The computer exterior is made of plastic, but it's weighty in a good way, not flimsy. However, I do wish it had a more metallic feel like the MacBook Pro (just my preference). The keyboard is back-lit, which is a nice visual attribute. The light goes away when you stop typing power saver.

Webcam is pretty good (3.906 out of 5). It doesn't need extra light to make you look good. Haven't used it much though.

True rating: 4.686 of 5

Excellent hardware and capability, just not EXACT match to MacBook, but comes pretty close! My computer is white, so... yeah. No viruses either I think it's a user inflicted occurrence anyway. I've always used PCs and never get viruses. But that's because I don't just download any old thing from a bunch of sites. It comes with trial versions of things. I usually uninstall those. I've never needed them. Trial "Kaspersky Internet Security" pop-up got annoying. I'm going to uninstall it momentarily. That's an easy process too.

I bought the VAIO as a replacement for my HP that crashed. It suffices for personal use but I would not purchase again. I use the touch pad instead of a mouse; the touch pad is not sensitive and you have to really tap or 'click' the pad to get a response. The graphics are only so-so. The resolution when streaming video is grainy and not crisp like my old HP. It feels sturdy but is made from plastic where as my HP had a metal case. Windows 8 on a non-touch screen is not ideal and takes time to get used to. The only real plus is the backlit keyboard. If I had it to do over, I would pay the extra $$ and by another HP.

I was very excited to receive this item despite the negative reviews I read from other customers such as the keyboard was not in place that I have to press it down to fit in keyboard space. This is exactly how the item came. The packaging was not protected well. I tried it for one day after I recieved the item and noticed that it stopped charging at 80%.I thought it was nothing but this problem persisted. I have been a customer of Amazon for two years and this is the second item that I found defective. Then I tried the Internet explorer. It is not allowing me to view my usual webpages such as my school which has blackboard. Maybe it is Windows 8 or a block somewhere that I could not figure. Otherwise, the item must have been good to keep.Amazon is good on returns I heard. So I mailed back my Sony laptop to Amazon and it is on its way now hoping I get a full refund.
