Samsung RF711-S01 17.3-Inch Laptop (Brilliant Black)

Samsung RF711-S01 17.3-Inch LaptopVery happy with this laptop. Great specs for the price. Plays Portal 2 and Arkham Asylum on High at max resolution without any hiccups. It hardly makes any noise. Vents are ideally positioned so it never gets hot. Beautiful display. Nice keyboard. Only complaint is that the shipping was slow.

No complaints with this laptop after several weeks of use! Starcraft 2 runs great, 900P screen is crisp. Plenty of other perks... would buy again.

The touchpad is going to make you wish you had a mouse. Its annoying for copy and pasting. Its also not centered relative to the laptop itself, but offset to the left. I've maxed out the sensitivity for it and it still needs more.

The wireless has software AND a button which only work together the first time after booting. So if you turn off the wireless and want to turn it on... you may have to Reboot. Plus they decided to make it more insecure by allowing it to default to on while booting... and even turning itself back on if powering off. Its annoying to push the little wireless button and nothing happens, or using the software and getting a connection error, requiring a reboot. (goodluck trying to find the actual wireless software exe file)

At this point I'm feeling I just need to uninstall their poor attempt with Win7 and put my own system onto it, assuming its not going to depend on their garbage software.

And why on earth couldnt they just make a pdf of their manual instead of some exe file which is overkill and fairly useless if you've been around computers for a few years?

PowerDVD software still hickups playing back bluray even with 8GB of memory installed.

Speakers give a hollow sounding playback.

I'm glad I only paid 740 for this.. I bought Samsung because I have a Samsung monitor thats lasted over 6 years and is user friendly. I guess it didnt translate to laptops.

Maybe my review will improve if the clean install improves performance and cuts some of the annoyance...

Update: Re-installing a clean Win7 Ultimate sure made it better. Even the touchpad works better.

We purchased the 17.3 inch model NP-RF711 about six month ago. We loved the screen and performance about this Samsung but the battery life was only 3 hours normal use. Still, we were mostly using it home so 3 hours was enough. But, that was just a beginning! Few month later it went down drastically and now its literally ten minutes! So, we contacted Samsung about this issue and after they verified everything they told us to ship it to them by UPS and wait approximately two weeks for them first to test it. Now, we had a Sony laptop being warranty serviced before and they never expected us to give out our laptop for at least a two weeks in order for them to first test it. I offered their Customer Service rep. Jessica to take it to a Samsung Service Center which I know they have in the area but they only give you one option mail it and wait! Their Rep was unprofessional and unfortunately very ignorant. You would get more help from automated answering machine probably than from their Service team. I hope this will warn some of you considering buying Samsung laptop. Don't buy it unless you confident you wont have to ever call their Service Department! Save your money and buy something else, not worth it.

Dell Inspiron i17RN-4235BK 17-Inch Laptop (Diamond Black)

Dell Inspiron i17RN-4235BK 17-Inch LaptopMy sister needed a laptop ASAP and this was the best deal I could find (even looking at DealNews, etc). I was initially wary of buying this since the reviewer who gave it one star said it wasn't an i5, but an i3 that's in the box. I called Amazon and customer service contacted Dell on my behalf, confirmed that it is an i5 processor, and provided me with a direct line to the Dell rep if I had additional questions. They also reaffirmed that if the item wasn't as described that a return would be simple and at no cost to me. I placed my order and it arrived at my door in one day. It's a slick looking machine and it is in fact an i5 processor. 5 Stars for the product, Amazon's handling of my questions, and their rapid delivery.

The amazon description and the side of the box says the processor is a core i5 but the laptop inside is really an i3. When I looked up the service code on the side of the box on Dell's website it also said it configured with an i3. That's why the price is so cheap. Returing product because it is not as described.

Dell Latitude D600 PentiumM 1.6Ghz 512Mb 40Gb WiFi CDD+RW/DVD Laptop

Dell Latitude D600 PentiumM 1.6Ghz 512Mb 40Gb WiFi CDD+RW/DVD LaptopPurchasing a used laptop was a risk and we weren't sure if it was worth taking....until we used this Dell for over a month. We couldn't be happier with our purchase! The only downside to this product is that Microsoft Office did not come installed on this notebook. However, the seller was prompt and the computer arrived intact and in just a few days. The battery lasts about two hours and the wireless is invaluable. I don't know how we lived without a laptop for all this time-we hardly ever turn on our PC anymore!

I've always been a fan of the Dell D600 (and D610) since I first used them at work. These units are true workhorses that never let you down, regardless of the application used on them. So when it came time to order a laptop for my son for his impending college trek, the choice was easy.

I know, buying a refurbished anything is a crapshoot, but not so with this laptop. the unit actually came to me looking better than described and performs flawlessly. My son's happy...I'm happy...you'll be happy, too and save some cash to boot!

NOTE: The unit does come with Windows XP but NOT with Office, thus the 4-star rating.

DELL LATITUDE C640 2.0GHZ 512MB 20GB DVD WIFI XP PRO LAPTOP

DELL LATITUDE C640 2.0GHZ 512MB 20GB DVD WIFI XP PRO LAPTOPThe dell computer I recieved was in very good condition although it has a minor scratch it is nothing to be upset about. With my initial order my restore CD was not included and the power cord had a small short..but I must say I would definately purchase from this company again, They quickly resolved any issues I had they even expressed me a new power cord and my restore cd to make it right..Again definately I would recommend purchasing from this company again.

The laptop was purchased for only one reason to run the DryFire USA Trap program. The unit works really good. Because it is a reconditioned unit, I found that the battery would not fully recharge. Bought a new battery from batteries&butter for $64.00. It is a top notch unit now. This should be the only problem that you should have.

It was delivered before the time indicated by UPS. Oh yes, you do not get a manual with the unit, but you can download the manual at the Dell site.

The decscription and technichal details said that it came with 512 RAM and a dvd drive but came with 256 RAM and a CD drive. when i wrote to him about it, he told me that i should have read his comments to find those details. He should have written the correct details in the description in the first place.

Acer C710-2055 11.6-Inch Chromebook (Iron Gray)

Acer C710-2055 11.6-Inch ChromebookI have never written a review before, due to the fact i have never felt the need to. This is a great supplemental computer. I not sure I would have it for my only computer for now but i can see it becoming one in the near future after some needed upgrades (Skype for one). If it had Skype it would be the perfect computer for deployed military members. I have been deployed multiply times so when i say that i want you to know where i am coming from. It is quick and exceptional for travel. People complained about the weight but that complaint carries no weight. 4 1/2 stars is what it deserves but that's not a choice. I would recommend to other computer users who like to explore new IT solutions. Acer is the way to go with this....not the other choices.

Your instinct is to compare it to a Windows PC but this is a new internet device which is 100% cloud based. Its also a Google product machine yet it runs thousands of apps one of which is MS Office 365 which is cloud based if you must have complete compatibility with MS Office files. Security is a strong point since no Win malware can infect this new OS and you don't need anti virus at all.

The display on the Acer is better than the slicker looking Samsung but it also has a VGA port not just a HDMI which means you can create a desktop by porting your current vga monitor, usb mouse and keyboard; it also has a ethernet port not just WiFi. The 2GB memory version is very fast so this 4GB will allow even more tabs to be open and responsive. The 6 cell battery makes it competitive with Samsung version and runs Netflix with no flicker at all. It has 3 usbs which work well with flash, SD, usb HD and optical too but for mostly read only with some exceptions. Unlike Win it does not slow down with use and is being improved ever few months with new functions for free. The remote control Chrome app is great for networking with a Win PC if you must gain access to programs or data remote. Printing requires either a Google cloud based printer (I got an Epson wf-3520; does Apple airprint too and dual side scanning...all for $110..awesome) or a Win PC acting as a print server with legacy printers or you can print as a PDF and then port them with a flash drive to a Win based printer. If you get the $200 version you can buy a $50 6 cell battery from acer to get the extra endurance. If you want a full size screen than look at the HP version.

Update.....Acer recently replaced the HD with a 16G SSD for the 2MB versions which means it boots as fast as the

Samsung now but its unclear if they will do the same for the 4G HD version here; if boot speed is your thing then take a look at that model too.

Overall this is a great choice for any public use PC and for students of all flavors due to price and function........the more people get used to this OS the more they will like it since its the PC we should have had day one not the kludge MS created for us all...............

The changes from the $200 Acer C710-2847 to this $280 Acer C710-2055 are just 2GB extra memory (for a total of 4GB) and a 6-hour battery (instead of a 4-hour battery).

$80 is not a bad price for 2GB memory and a longer-life battery. One of the best things about the Acer C7 is that it's upgradeable, so you could buy the $200 machine and upgrade the memory and battery yourself. (At present, March 2013, Acer C7 users mostly seem to get an after-market longer-life battery from a third-party supplier named CDW.) It would probably end up around $80 for an after-market upgrade too, so if you're sure you want the extra memory and battery life, this $280 one would be a fine choice.

I'd still advise most people to get the $200 Acer C7. I've found the 2GB memory and 4 hours of battery life to be good enough; and I can always upgrade later if I change my mind. Even though $80 is reasonable for what you get, I feel a visceral difference in the price. $280 is a remarkably affordable machine; but $200 is almost shockingly inexpensive for a quite good computer.

I'm a big fan of the $200 Acer C7; see my review here: New Acer C7 C710-2847 Chromebook 11.6" Intel Dual Core B847 1.1 GHz 2GB DDR3 320GB 5400RPM HDD Wifi HDMI USB3.0 VGA Card Reader. Now, at present (June 2013) you can't get it for $200 on Amazon. Best Buy is selling a $199 Acer C7 with a 16GB SSD; that's the Chromebook I wish I had.

I love the idea of a laptop-type device that boots as quickly as this one does.

I can leave it on my desk for days, yet when I open the lid, it's ready to log in within 3 seconds! It starts up from a dead stop in 11 seconds!

I have yet to use all of the features, nor test the compatibly with MS Office products, but so far it does about everything that I need.

If all you need is a web-surfing solution, this is the system for you. Light and portable, it offers everything "google". Though you could easily get other webmail based emails on this system, it comes with a gmail shortcut, along with google docs, sheets, etc., as well as google drive (cloud-based storage).

The only issue I've found so far, was when I connected it to an external monitor. After disconnecting it and using it later, I found it still had the reference to the external monitor, so I had to reboot it...10 seconds later and everything was ready to go.

Very glad I made this purchase.

I bought this as an experiment, to some extent, although having downloaded ChromeOS to fiddle with over a year ago, I knew about what to expect. But I'd never used it exclusively on a dedicated machine. I'm very pleasantly surprised.

*The OS: Am learning more all the time, but have found it to be very useful once I resigned myself to using mainly Google Docs, which I had resisted up to now. It was a good thing to learn, because my misconceptions about its limits proved to be pretty much unfounded. Part of this machine's role will be as a travel laptop that will need to access company documents sometimes, and I now know that while I might not be doing heavy editing or writing a new SMS manual in Google Docs it will work for what I do need it to do. I also like the speed of the OS, both starting up and on the web.

The more I learn about ChromeOS, the better I'm liking it. There is a learning curve, but it's pretty easy. There is also a fun factor. I look forward to continuing updates and improvements, which will come to the machine in free, effortless updates nothing to keep track of. Freedom from malware is huge, too. Given what I intend to use it for, thumbs-up on the OS.

*The Hardware: I had tempered my expectations for the Acer, based on its low price I told myself not to expect too much refinement. But it's quite nice, really, if a little plain-vanilla looking; I've ordered a skin to jazz it up a bit. Quality seems good, fit & finish are fine, it's solid, I even like the keyboard. The screen is good, and bright enough for outdoor use I sit and work on the porch at home a lot. Battery life is as advertised about 6 hours. So no complaints about the hardware.

One reason I wanted the Acer instead of the Samsung is that I thought I might put ChrUbuntu on it, for the full OS and apps and the Acer, with its 320GB HDD, has ample room for the extra OS. It also uses an X86 processor, so it will run standard apps like LibreOffice unlike the ARM-based Chromebooks. I still might install ChrUbuntu, though I want to sound the depths of ChromeOS first. But even if I don't put the full OS on, I think the extra HDD room will come handy, as I'd like to keep large DrobBox and Google Drive folders on the laptop for off-line access.

Another thing I like about the Acer's construction is that HDD, memory and battery are replaceable or upgradeable. I like the idea that when SSDs get cheaper, for example, I could swap one in for a performance increase.

This is a good little laptop with surprising quality and speed at a very low price. I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it.

Lenovo G470 Laptop Computer - 432826U (Dark Brown) - Intel Core i5-2410M (2.30GHz), 4GB RAM DDR3, 5

Lenovo G470 Laptop Computer - 432826U - Intel Core i5-2410M, 4GB RAM DDR3, 500GB HDD 2.5' 5400RPM, Intel HD 3000 Graphics, Bluetooth, 6-Cell, Windows 7 Home Premium x64It's very good choice. I have it more than 8 months and still it runs in its original windows. Its buttery, LCD, camera, keyboard, sound, weight is just perfect. I strongly recommend it.

In the era of digital entertainment, this laptop is the equivalent of a vacuum tube device. How can a laptop be made in this day and age without single button volume controls? The volume adjustments require the mandatory use of both hands, unless you are Shaq O or Jordan. That set the tempo for continuing disappointments. Video playback would invariably have at least 2 occasions any given day when the audio would all of a sudden turn to "weak battery mode", you know the funny jarring sound in slow motion. It would pick up within a second or two but its annoying when you think you paid 500 bucks for this glitzy hardware. After thoroughly researching all Lenovo products I finally had it replaced with a much more expensive and advanced model which has better media controls and sound/video support infrastructure. To their credit, the product replacement procedure is efficient, fast and no-fee. A lot of Lenovo's models are absolutely thoughtless. Any one with one hand or digital (no pun) impairments would be offended right out of the box.

I have had this computer for three years. It is my only computer, so between myself and three kids it stays pretty busy. I have had to replace the keyboard, it's pretty easy to knock the keys off if you aren't being careful. I also up graded the memory and replaced the dvd drive. It still runs perfectly, despite having two separate viruses removed from it over the past year. It is heavy, I would NOT recommend this computer if you have to carry your laptop around with you. The large screen and full sized number keyboard are really worth the extra weight and bulk to me though, so I just muscle through it. In all, I would absolutely buy this computer again. Thanks for reading my review :-)

I ordered a Dell Inspiron laptop 1 1/2 years ago and it worked great until recently. The screen went black and the system would not start. Turned out that the video card had failed.

I contacted Dell customer support to activate my next business day warranty and after more than a week I have gotten nowhere with them. My claim has been "escalated" twice with the same excuses and refusal to fix the problem. They claim they have no video cards in stock and I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for a replacement card, 2-3 weeks for a loaner system, or 2-3 weeks for a replacement system -basically my NEXT DAY warranty is anything but.

I explained that this is a mission critical system and a 2-3 week delay is unacceptable given the high price I paid for the next day warranty. I offered to take another make or model of graphics card and even offered to go buy the card myself if the agreed to pay for it.

They refused to help in any way. So, I am left with a useless laptop for 2-3 weeks until it becomes convenient for them to honor the warranty. I will never buy another Dell product again and recommend that others who are not technically experienced with fixing computers or that need a "mission critical" system that they look elsewhere because Dell cannot be relied upon to fix broken systems in a timely manner.

I bought a very similar computer to the one listed here, and I am very happy with it. The problem with this particular listing is that it is way too expensive for the device you are getting. I got my Vostro for $1000 about 2 months ago, and it is substantially faster than this one (1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM).

The actual computer itself has been great. It's certainly a little bulkier than I would like it to be, but it's nice having the 15.4 inch wide screen. I also got the 9-cell battery which adds some weight and protrudes from the back of the body slightly. Having 4 USB ports is a particularly desirable feature, and although I have only used the SIM card reader a few times, I can see how that would come in handy as well.

I ended up choosing the Vostro over Dell's Inspiron 1520/1521 -which is essentially the same computer, but is marketed toward home users, whereas the Vostro is labeled as a 'small business computer' -because at the time, the Inspiron was only offered with the Vista operating system. Also, you can customize the small business computers so they don't have all the junk programs their home & office computers come with. Overall, I was able to get more bang for my buck with the Vostro.

My advice is if you are going to buy a Dell, buy it direct and wait for a good promotion to pop up. Try searching the internet for "Dell Coupons," and although Dell doesn't usually offer them, you will often be redirected to a good limited-time offer at their official website.

Dell Inspiron 14Z-5423 Ultrabook i5-3317U 1.70GHz - 8GB - 500GB HDD + 32GB SSD - DVDRW - 14.0-inch

Dell Inspiron 14Z-5423 Ultrabook i5-3317U 1.70GHz - 8GB - 500GB HDD + 32GB SSD - DVDRW - 14.0-inchI believe some poor reviews of products are due to the fact that the users may be misinformed about the product or just unable to understand the product. With that said, I review the Dell Ultrabook 14z Inspiron 5423 as a computer tech with many years of experience. There are several incarnations of the Dell 14z Ultrabook, and each one has a different configuration. So be very careful when choosing one for you may not be getting what you thought you wanted. The processor in this 5423 is an i7-3517U @1.9GHz. This is a sharp looking laptop with a very sturdy brushed aluminum case. The front corners of the case has an annoying lip that has the potential of catching on things like your arms and wrists! The keys on the keyboard are spaced nicely, but because so there is no separate keypad. For some reason Dell chose to leave off the lighted keyboard bummer. It has a generous sized touch pad which can be turned off if using a mouse. It only has two 3.0 USB ports many less expensive laptops have three ports! One of the ports is on the left by the HDMI port and both have a cover over them, which can be a hassle when plugging into. The wired network port also has a cover. With the i7 processor, 8 Gig of memory and the SSD acting as cache memory this laptop is very fast. It could have been even faster if Dell had used a 7200 HD instead of the slower 5400. It seems that all computer companies chintz out a little on their builds thinking it will give them an edge in the market. As far as I am concerned it just makes them look stupid! The web cam is OK, but not up to the quality of the rest of the laptop. I casually tried to pair this laptop with a Bluetooth headset and was unable. Do not know if it is the laptop or the headset not big issue right now. Something they do not tell you in the specs is about the battery and hard drive. You have to take out several screws on the bottom and remove the keyboard assembly to access the battery or the hard drive. I guess it is Dell's way of keeping the laptop thin and light weight. If you can look over some of the minor faults, and are looking for a thin, light weight, sturdy, fast, 14" laptop with most of the bells and whistles, this may be the one for you.

The RST technology with the solid state drive in this laptop is unbelievable. I use this in my living room connected to my entertainment system mostly for movies. It boots up in about the same time as my Blu-Ray player and much more convenient for browsing netflix, amazon prime, Hulu, or youtube than trying to use the very limited interfaces built in to a television or blu-ray player. It's also got a great battery life when I'm reading pdf books or dabbling around on the net from my couch. Great product!

Con: Weak wireless card for connecting to a router on the other end of your house. Probably throttled back the power to save on the battery life.

This laptop is beautifully constructed. Lightweight, easy to type on, and peppy touchpad. I purchased this particular "ultrabook" because it has a DVD drive but still weighs in at about 4lbs. Battery life seems to be acceptable (I get about 4 hours unplugged watching TV/movies). I do think it's a lot of bang for your bock for ~$500.

That said, there are a few things that would benefit the 14z (5423). First is a backlit keyboard. Second is the screen quality could be better, it requires a lot of adjustment when watching movies. The WiFi periodically disconnects and the device needs to be re-booted, however I have been advised that updating the drivers may remedy this. Windows 8 is not very intuitive and is optimized for a touch screen, which the 14z does not have. Finally, the DVD tray release button is ultra sensitive and accidentally pops open constantly with the slightest pressure or when something brushes against it. Perhaps this is just a defect with my particular device.

This is a nice attempt by Dell but it would be a perfect laptop if just a few of those flaws were addressed in future models.

I got this laptop but whit i3 processor and not i5 like I wanted and ordered.

I think that this is not a solution because I order laptop for use it and not for send it back.. finally, after more then 10 emails, they refund me 35$ (that I think it's not enough but I gave up).

so, the bottom line is if you want to buy a laptop do not but it from this seller!!!

Good luck!

Dell Inspiron mini 10 Notebook

Dell Inspiron mini 10 NotebookThis little netbook computer meets almost all of my wife's computing needs: it is light, small, has almost a full-size keyboard, a decently sized hard drive, a readable screen, and performs as advertised. The Wi-Fi adapter connects easily with our Verizon mobile hot spot for good, reliable, and consistent wireless connections. The biggest negative is that it comes with only the bare minimum memory -1GB -needed to run the Windows 7 Starter edition pre-loaded on the computer. To make it more functionally usable, we upgraded the memory chip from 1GB to 2GB, which is the most memory the computer will take. To do that, we had to remove the keyboard -aaargh. We also upgraded, online, from the Windows 7 Starter edition to the Windows 7 Ultimate edition. With the upgrade to 2GB memory, and to the do-everything Windows 7 Ultimate edition -which includes multilingual capability -we can write, send and receive e-mails in Japanese, and run other programs simultaneously. It is still considerably slower than larger laptops, however. To partially offset that, we loaded a 2GB SD card to give it ReadyBoost capability; doing that lets the computer use the additional flash memory the same as an additional memory chip. So, with a relatively cheap upgrade in memory and with a reasonably cheap upgrade to the Ultimate edition, the machine performs quite well for Web browsing, e-mailing, and use of Excel. It does not have a DVD/CD player, however. That may be overcome by using an add-on, plug-in third party USB drive. We have not yet had to use that capability, as we have downloaded all needed upgrades. Thus, in summation, we can recommend this computer if your needs do not include steaming video or significant graphics use. And, the price is right: you should be able to find this computer online for about $260 or so. That's it for us.

I bought Dell Inspiron mini 10 netbook last year. Within 6 mths, motherboard started giving problems, power adapter stopped working and screen started flickering. Luckily it was still within the initial warranty.

Initially, I was very excited about buying mini because of it's weight and portability. It cost me around $350. Now I think iPhone beats it for its portability and weight if I am going to use it only for internet access. For other uses nothing like normal laptop or a desktop. Never use netbook as your primary computer.

Dell is very shady about prices of their warranty extension. They quoted me a warranty price that was almost equivalent to the price of netbook itself. They do not have fixed warranty prices on their website, but they give ridiculously high priced quotes when you call their support center. I was asking for an extension on the existing warranty and they were tricking me with ridiculous price for upgrade, without informing me. Luckily I spotted it. Never take them at a face value. Possibly this is the reason they can afford to offer mini at such a cheap rate.

When you cannot trust a company, how can you trust their product?

Runs very well! I can keep it in my laptop forever and it won't burn you. I love watching netflix, and it's so light, plus the battery life is amazing! I went from Vegas to L.A. (A 6 hour drive) and it lasted all the way there and still had like %30 battery. I see the reviews here that the people probably didn't treat their laptop well, and therefore are experiencing problems. Even then, I haven't had a problem with mine EVER, and i've dropped it solid concrete a couple of times (I like to take it out with me a lot.)

Extremely slow. Don't waste your time and money. It uses DDR2 ram_which is almost obsolete by now. I am even sure that you can upgrade its memory.

HP Pavilion g6-2228DX 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

HP Pavilion g6-2228DX 15.6-Inch LaptopOrder was placed, confirmed, and delivered ahead of time. Out of the box, the laptop checked out petfectly. Went through a couple of lengthy Win8 updates. After that clear sailing.

Good purchase. Taxes done.

Lenovo ThinkPad 23532MU 14-Inch Laptop

Lenovo ThinkPad 23532MU 14-Inch LaptopI bought a T430s which was delivered early November. Order and delivery went smoothly. But before you buy this (or any other Lenovo product), there are a couple of things you will benefit from understanding.

1. the 64 bit Windows operating system (either Win 7 or Win 8) will not allow you to use older programs which worked fine with Windows XP. Lenovo offers something called "XP Mode" which is supposed to allow older programs to operate in a "virtual XP atmosphere". This is a bad joke. Neither Lenovo or Microsoft will support this and it does not work as easily as it is advertised to work. The Lenovo salesperson encouraged me to order this (actually, you can download for free if you don't order) with the idea that it was an easy to use system. NOT TRUE. I'm no computer dummie and I was unable to use ANY DOS or WIN XP program with it. Maybe it will work with a lot of effort, but who needs that? So, if you buy a Lenovo computer with WIN 7 or 8 (x64) OS, be prepared to buy new software for any program except MS Office.

2. I had all sorts of trouble with downloading critical updates for WIN 7. Microsoft said it was Lenovo's responsibility to help with this but Lenovo Tech Support refused. It was just by accident that I solved the problem by downloading one update at a time. Lenovo will not support the OS on the machines they sell.

3. I could not find any pre-installed program to use with the CD/DVD burner that was installed. Lenovo again refused to help with this even though they installed the software that would make this part of the computer work. Lenovo support for any software issue is non-existant, even for software they put on the machine. And it isn't like this would take them a lot of time or training to help with; it is just their bad and unreasonable policy. Beware-buy a Lenovo computer and you are on your own from the day it is delivered.

Samsung NP900X3A-B02 13.3-Inch Notebook - Black

Samsung NP900X3A-B02 13.3-Inch Notebook - BlackI received my Series 9 a couple days ago and I have to say I love it. The size is perfect for traveling and the Core I5 processor delivers more than enough punch for any applications I use. Really, there are many reviews on the Series 9 virtues and my experience with the system overall is in line with everyone else's: it is a great computer.

However, there is one glaring issue that purchasers should not gloss over and that is the weak wireless abilities of this system. Before buying mine I had read the plethora of issues people were having with wireless, but there also appeared to be various fixes for the weak performance. And honestly, I assumed that after more than 6 months on the market any issues would have been resolved. But not so, at least with my system. As of today, I have tried every correction I could find on the Internet (my computer has the Intel wireless module, not the Broadcom so there was no need to replace it) but nothing has corrected the problem. I found a couple reviews where brave users had removed their covers and found that the wireless signal increased substantially, but decreased again when the covers were re-installed. So, based on my experience and what I have read, it appears to be a serious design issue where the Series 9 covers are interfering with the wireless signal, and that is no easy fix.

On the plus side, I have noted that the problem is only with the 2.4 Ghz wireless and NOT the 5.0 Ghz wireless. I use a Netgear Dual band router at home so I was able to try both bands. I normally use the 2.4 Ghz because it has better range than the 5.0 GHz, but even if I am able to get 4 bars on the Samsung with the 2.4 Ghz wireless signal (and that is while standing within 10 feet of the router only), the signal drops out so frequently that it renders the connection useless. Most pages provide the "Page cannot be displayed". To compound this problem, when I am traveling, most wireless access points I encounter are still 2.4 Ghz bands, so I will essentially not be able to use the computer while out of my home, or I will have to install a USB wireless dongle, taking up one of the 2 available USB ports. I should note when I say this that most of my time on a computer is spent on web-apps, so wireless is critical to me. Using a dongle for wireless is not particularly appealing to me.

On a more positive note, I noticed that on the 5 Ghz band, while I may only get 2-3 bars signal, my connection is stable and FAST: I am getting about 22 Mbs transfer through SpeedTest.net, which is as good as any other computer I have on the wireless network. So if you are primarily using a 5 Ghz router, you probably will not have any issues (making the broad-based assumption that your experience is the same as mine).

If you are not surfing the web and just using the Samsung as a work horse, again, I think you will be exceptionally pleased with this computer. Only the wireless is an issue and it should not be underestimated, as I did.

Sorry for the long-winded review, but I felt that it should be clear to potential purchasers that the wireless problem is a big elephant at the dinner table still. Looks like my Samsung will be going back next week and that makes me sad.

Finally, a PC product that's as attractive as anything from Apple. I've had mine for a month and I still get real tactile and visual pleasure from using it, or just looking at it. Samsung has fixed whatever the wifi issue was. Clearly, they should have been more open about the problem and so able to explain that they'd fixed it! Wifi performance is on a par with my old Asus UL30, which was always good.

System performance is definitely hindered by out of date drivers. Run the update (as you should anyway) and both processor and graphics benchmarks jump to where they should be. It's a big difference and explains some odd reviews in which the Samsung was substantially outperformed by competitor products with identical hardware.

Battery life is also better than most professional reviewers have shown. First, the screen is wonderful. It's bright, a lot brighter than the competition, and non-relective. I run mine at around 15%, unless I'm working outside. Nice touches like the backlit keyboard and the adaptive brightness use up juice as well. Now that I've set everything up, I'm getting 5 1/2 hours with a mix of writing (Final Draft) and web browsing, wifi on, bluetooth off.

Build quality is excellent. Despite what you may have read, the whole thing is duralumin, no plastic anywhere. Ports for everything including USB 3.0, although you'll need an adaptor for the HDMI. Like everyone else, I wish they'd put in a standard SD card slot rather than the micro. But you CAN close that flap with a card inside. Push it slightly deeper and then shut it. I bought a 32GB micro card and put it in. Problem solved.

Really not much more to say. The whole thing weighs 2 lbs 14 oz. It's the best laptop I've ever owned, by a long way.

I had ample time to read the reviews of all ultrabooks. I was also aware that many new models will be launched at CES 2012 but I will leave the U.S. in a week's time, so I could not wait. And I am glad I did not. For me this is the perfect laptop and I have had many different models before. Works like a charm, excellent hardware, and absolutely no problems with touchpad nor wifi. I purchased a refurbished unit that came without the Samsung software installed. In this connection I had to call 1-800-SAMSUNG a few times. The speed and competence with which they help is truly outstanding. Most pleased.

I purchased this as a refurbished (by Samsung) product. I had a few qualms and contacted the seller more than once. Each time, the seller was extremely prompt, courteous, and informative. I went ahead and bought the NP900X3A-B02US. From order date to receipt: only 3 days! It was well-packaged and as described. There are a few minor scratches that are barely noticeable (noticeable only because I used a flashlight and scrutinized every inch)...to be expected in a refurbished product.

It's only been a few hours since I've received it. I've updated the drivers and backed up system files (also did a full backup), began personalizing it to my taste, began learning about all of the bells and whistles (still much to learn), connected to my network wirelessly. All went smoothly and very quickly and easily.

I encountered only one minor problem. At first startup and during Windows setup, the system froze. Went immediately to Samsung support website using another computer and initiated a chat with customer support. The problem was resolved before our chat was over, only a few minutes. The CS agent was courteous and knowledgeable about my problem. Very satisfied.

The NP900X3A-B02US is a beautiful tool, very pleasing to the eye, elegant, and a joy to work/play with. So far, I like everything about it. I had a bit of a time locating the USB plug and the other plugs but found them after checking through the installed User Guide. All of the plugs are behind a lid. I like that feature because it should keep out the dust. Never had a computer that covered the plugs before. The laptop is not only beautiful, it is very light. I like that. I like the keyboard and found no problem with it or using it. I like that the keyboard is backlit.

I purchased this particular model because I wanted a fully SSD with 256GB total capacity. I also purchased a 500GB portable external drive to store my system and all backup files. I have a 500GB Cardinal backup drive on which I store all of my data, photo, music, video, and other miscellaneous files. So I'm covered.

I gave this review only 4 stars because I intend to update it after using the laptop for a few weeks. I may then upgrade the review to 5 stars.

I want to again comment on how pleased I am with the seller concerning this purchase.

27 Sep 2012

I've had my S9 for 2 weeks now and I am still extremely happy with it and can't seem to keep my hands or eyes off it. There are many other good-looking laptops out there but until I saw this one, I never saw one more beautifully elegant...and it performs greatly, too! Haven't learned all the features yet but wanted to add a couple of comments.

I've had no issues with the wireless connectivity. Connects on startup, no disconnects, and always 5 bars. The other point I wanted to add is this: I have owned several Samsung products (TV, cell phones, etc.), I trust their products and have never been disappointed, I've had no problems with their customer service on the occasions I needed to contact them. My customer service experience have all been online chats with their technical support agents at their website--no email or phone calls. Maybe that's why my experiences have all been good. The tech support agents were courteous, knowledgeable, spoke English very well, and resolved my problems immediately, usually within minutes.

When searching for an ultrabook, I considered both Sony and the MacBook Air. They both had beautiful products with a lot of great features. However, they both also had one huge negative for me--they are both extremely proprietary. Nearly all after-market accessories and parts for their products (I have had their laptops and a Sony TV) had to be purchased from them and their prices are expensive. I don't like being forced to buy their products. Don't get me wrong; both Sony and Apple have excellent products. I just want the option of buying what I want or need from whomever I want and get the best price for it. So I opted for Samsung with no regret.

21 Feb 2013

I am still very pleased with this ultrabook. In fact, I am considering the purchase of a 2nd one from the same vendor. I really wanted one in a color other than black but I wouldn't be dissatisfied with another black one. I still think it's beautiful and very well-made. I have had no problems with the wireless connectivity or with bluetooth. My 2 BT mice connect in mere seconds; all I need do is turn it on and they're ready to go.

This laptop runs VERY cool, barely feel any warmth to the hand, no heat rushing out the sides from underneath the laptop. I'm running the SETI program on it nearly 24/7. It does not slow down my use of the unit to surf the web or work on any other program or to play (simple) games. I don't like the fast-moving violent video games. The webcam is excellent though I hardly ever use it. The sound volume is more than satisfactory and has a nicer tone than either of my VAIOs or Gateway laptops have/had. I originally planned on upgrading my RAM to 8GB but, for my use, I find it isn't necessary. The 4GB it came with exceeds my needs.

So, yes, I am seriously considering purchasing another one of these--same model, same vendor, and once again a refurbished unit by Samsung. The price is right $999 plus $16 s/h. If the 2nd unit is as great as this one is, I will be extremely pleased. Why a 2nd one? I always need a spare on hand...just in case. I don't want to use the VAIOs any longer. Maybe I'll donate them to a school or someone handicapped.

I have absolutely no reservations about recommending this refurbished unit from this vendor to anyone for purchase. Samsung has not let me down with any of the products I've purchased from them--cell phones, HDTV, cameras, video cameras, dvd/cd player/recorder. Samsung makes beautiful, quality products and for me, they have provided A++ online customer service support for all of their products. I will never return to Sony or Apple for any of my electronic wants or needs.

I've had this laptop since August/2011. I did not get it on Amazon there was a *great* deal on-line from another supplier and I took a chance on them. This is without a doubt the best laptop I've ever had. Thin, light, fast, with a superb screen. The keyboard and touchpad are top notch. The audio is excellent for such a small machine. No fans going on and off, instant boot, dual-band wireless (2.4 and 5Ghz, which I wasn't even aware of when I purchased it...) make this thing amazing. Highly recommended.

Lenovo B575-1450A5U - IdeaPad Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB

Lenovo B575-1450A5U - IdeaPad Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 15.6' Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB Hard Drive - BlackI picked up this laptop at my local Best Buy for $299. I read the reviews on the Best Buy site before purchasing this laptop, and the majority of them that had complaints had complaints of encountering blue screens of death within a short amount of time of purchasing the laptop. Others had issues with the sensitivity of the touch pad, but overall there were positive reviews.

While I was removing some of the unwanted software like the Best Buy app, I encountered a blue screen of death. This was because when I restarted to complete the uninstall of some of the programs, it did NOT install the windows updates. Once these were installed, I haven't had a problem since. So once you get your computer, make sure you shut down to install updates, and then commence removing the bloatware.

Pros: Nice screen size, has good enough specs to run several mildly heavy programs at the same time, HDMI port, excellent keyboard (it doesn't have the traditional bracketed keys, but the more embedded buttons like the Mac Books, plus a num pad), solid design, runs very quiet and cool (extremely cool. With it sitting on my lap it does not even get warm.), good battery life if you use the energy management for it, fingerprint reader, facial recognition, and built in webcam.

Cons: Touch pad is a little sensitive, but I came from using a Thinkpad where I used the touch point mouse. It may just be because I need to get used to it. External mouses are always a compromise.

Overall a very good computer for the price.

I bought this because my wife and I are both in school, and one laptop is not enough. I was looking for something to run MS Office and a web browser. This was by far the most feature laden machine in its price range. It has fingerprint lock, webcam, 4GB RAM, and a dual-core processor. Once I got it home, I was pleasantly surprised to see there was no bloatware other than the BestBuy app, so I did not have near as many programs to uninstall as usual. They advertise fast boot ups, and mine boots in about 45 seconds, much faster than my Toshiba. I picked this up from BestBuy for $299 and would gladly make the purchase again.

I bought this laptop back in August for $299.00. WOW! I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am with it. The screen is clear and vibrant, the processor is fast and it's amazing what 4gig of ram can do. I love the restore feature and the fingerprint scanner. It's light and easily portable, the chicklet keys give it that updated modern feel. It's just so much computer for the money. I'm thrilled.

Want Lenovo B575-1450A5U - IdeaPad Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB Discount?

I recently had to buy 2 budget laptops for business use (see also my review for the

Gateway NV51B15U) and decided on the Lenovo because it's dirt cheap AND has decent specs.

Windows Experience Index: Processor (3.8), Memory (4.9), Graphics (4.1), Gaming Graphics (5.5-faster than my i3 Toshiba!), Hard disk (6.9)

Pros:

-AMD E-processor is fast enough even for basic 3-D gaming;

-Has HDMI and 4GB RAM, which many budget laptops lack;

-Build quality is solid for a budget notebook;

-Lenovo has above average customer service.

Cons:

-This is a generic rant My 2001 Powerbook was 1-inch thin and 5.5 lbs. Ten years later and PC makers still can't give me a skinny 15-inch laptop for under $1,000?!!

-No other cons.

Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7384 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop - Fusion X2 Finish in Red Horizon

Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7384 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop - Fusion X2 Finish in Red HorizonFirst off ... I'm not a gamer. I had a 15.6" Lenovo entry level laptop that worked fine but I wanted more in a laptop. I wanted to be able to watch Blu-ray movies; I wanted an HDMI connection to tie the lap to a TV; I wanted a built in card reader; I wanted dual HDDs so I could designate one strictly for backup. There are several other features that my Lenovo lacked so I opted for a high end gaming machine. I was torn between an Asus gamer and this Toshiba. I did a huge amount of research, comparison between the 2 manufacturers and comparative cost shopping. Finally I pulled the trigger on this Qosmio. All I can say is ...WOW!! It not only met but exceeded my expectations. I upgraded the OS to Win7 Ultimate, threw on Office and A/V software and was good to go. A lot of the Toshiba bloatware is actually useful. I blew it all away and then reinstalled the select ones that I wanted to retain. For instance, Eco Utility is a cool feature ... turn it on with the touch of a button and the screen dims about 10%, all the idiot lights disappear and battery life increases about 25%. Sweet if you're working/playing away from an AC outlet. Tap the desktop button again and Eco is off. Harman/Kardon speakers have to be heard to be believed! With stereo above and a sub woofer below, the sound is unmatched in ANY other laptop. The NVIDIA GTX560M vid card is top of the line, latest state of the art. Intel Core i7; 8GB of 1333 RAM; 1TB of HDD (2-500GBs); Backlit keyboard. I could just go on indefinitely. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 10 laptop. I have zero negative comments. There is no room for improvement. Lastly, Amazon's price beat out the competitors'. Don't hesitate even if you are only remotely considering this unit. Pull the trigger ... with Amazon!!

Just bought this a few days ago at $1399, and NOW you go and take $100 off.

Well anyway, still a good gaming notebook at $1399. Took a bit of doing though. Had to downgrade the bios to 1.10 to fix the occasional choppy framerate that I experienced playing Witcher 2. Also had to go to the global settings in the Nvidia control panel and set the Nvidia processor as my preferred processor in the global settings in order to get some of my other games to run smoothly. But now everything's smooth as butter on max settings at 1080p (Samsung TV). Love the hybrid drive, speakers, and price so much that I'm willing to overlook the max 8gb ram, 1600x900 17" screen, and ugly design (in my opinion).

Not bad for $1399. Even better at $1299.

If your looking for a laptop, that could essentially replace a desktop, then you may wanna highly consider this one.

with all the high end specs, it is definitely worth it, and the price is right. I listen to a lot of music, some has lots of bass,

but no matter what it sounds great. I also play games on it, the graphic are just simply put, amazing. Day or night

i can clearly see the keyboard, which by the way work very well, and feels great. although, when i hit the volume button,

it make a loud beeping sound, and i cant quite figureout how to make it stop, so that one downer...also the mouse buttons

have quite a loud click... but over all this is an amazing computer, and Toshiba did it again :D

For the first week this was a wonderful laptop and worked and functioned properly as I was told most toshiba's do. Then into week two the mouse pad starting doing some stupid things almost like a button was electronically stuck or something. I took it to best buy where I purchased it and they tried to repair it there. That didn't work, not their fault, they are't computer repair people really, so they told me they had to send it off to have it repaired. I said no problem, things break that's okay with me, it happens. So I sent it off for toshiba to replace the touch pad on it with best buy giving toshiba specific instructions to contact me if for some odd reason they had to repair or replace the hard drive as I had not gotten around to making an operating system disk for it and didn't have all my data backed up yet. Well, two weeks went by and my laptop was returned to best buy from toshiba with a new hard drive and toshiba never bothered to call best buy or me when they did that. So in my mind, since Im a mechanic by trade, that's like giving a customer back a car with a brand new engine with no oil in it. Stupid huh, yeah. Anyway, I told the manager of best buy what happened and he took care of me and made me an opating system disk to use on my new hard drive and I also got to keep that disk for future use. As far as my data goes it was lost to the world, but still, I got my lap top back and it was working correctly again, at least for a week. After a week it began doing the same thing it was orginially doing. So I brought it back in and they sent it off for another two weeks and this time they replaced the mouse pad. At this point she has had this laptop for a total of two months and only been able to use it for one. Okay, well they made a mistake the first time and they fixed it, I guess I can live with it. Then a month goes by and now we get to today, its broken again! So now I am going to be heading to best buy and asking them to give me a new laptop cause I no longer have faith in this perticular one and I don't want to deal with toshiba customer service anymore. All in all, it's not best buy's fault, but because the toshiba service place ain't worth crap, best buy is stuck with an angry customer!

I bought this laptop about three years ago in a quick hurry.

It has been a workhorse. Very dependable. I love it!

I have had this laptop for about a year now, and I love it. I wanted a laptop that I could surf the web and lounge on the couch with. This works perfect. I do not use it for much other than the web, but it serves my purpose just fine.

Yep, another Toshiba piece of junk. I didn't learn my lesson from the first Toshiba laptop I bought a few years back. I bought this one in January when I was on a trip and my previous HP laptop bit the dust. This Toshiba lasted seven months before one of the USB ports died, and then the CD/DVD drive died. No more Toshiba junk for me.

Asus X55A-JH91 15.6-Inch Laptop

Asus X55A-JH91 15.6-Inch LaptopI needed something to run multiple apps including powerpoint and video simultaneously with no lag. This does the job. The keyboard took some getting used to, the keys do not have the dull plastic feel that I am used to with a Dell, but more of a cold metallic feel. One quirk I am trying to figure out with Windows 8 ... there seems to be an automatic swipe gesture I keep doing with the mousepad when I swipe up/to the right to move around the screen. It takes me to the start screen, which is annoying, and I would love to turn that feature off. Windows 8 on a non-touchscreen device can be a bit awkward and I wish I had windows 7. There is no start menu to access programs or quickly shutdown ... instead I control/alt/delete to shutdown or go back to the start screen by putting the mouse in the lower left screen of the computer and accessing the settings ... takes too much time. Overall, this is a good machine for the money, and I must point out that the audio/speakers are top notch. I am able to play for my entire classroom without external speakers, a first for any laptop I have ever had. Also, the battery has lasted me an average of 5 hours with the screen brightness turned way down. It is also a very quiet machine -no loud fans or processing sounds. Sometimes I forget that it' even on.

Update: The annoying automatic swipe function I was talking about turns out to be something that is actually fantastic called ASUS Smart Gesture. You can turn features on/off, like using two fingers for scrolling, one finger for select, three fingers to navigate pages, etc.

I bought this laptop 2 months at k mart, and is had been a horrible experience..the keypad is way to sensitive and when i write something with the keyboard it goes crazy and all my information automatically gets delete it, or end up in another location of the text...is really annoying!! other than that, is great but prepare for some frustrations when chatting.

Buy Asus X55A-JH91 15.6-Inch Laptop Now

This laptop can be found for under $300 and it is well worth it if you are willing to install Ubuntu Linux 12.10. If you're willing to do that, you'll end up with a laptop that feels like a MacBook Pro which last I checked was $1,500.

The trackpad is little sensitive and ethernet wasn't picked-up out of the box by Ubuntu which are the only reasons I'm giving it 4 stars. Otherwise, love this for a Linux laptop.
