three weeks after ordering two dell latitued D531's for my elementary school kids, I finally received the laptops to only find out that despite the way they were advertised as 2GB RAM, they came with 896 MB of RAM, I am calling their office but the recording says they are not taking calls... What a rip off...

As a person who is still on a budget because of the economy, this was a suitable option and price range for my purpose. Of course the battery is useless, i knew it would be, but I'll just replace it when i can. Mine came with windows vista business, so long as it had windows i was happy.

This product is working fine so far, it's an older model so it may need to have some newer drivers installed to operate the new plug and play products like optical mouses, but but my printer booted up fine with no driver disk needed.

The seller answered my questions promptly, i would purchase from this seller again.

HP ENVY DV7 17.3' Quad Core Laptop, 8GB DDR3 Memory, 750GB Hard Drive, RadeonTM HD 7660G, Beats AudioTM, Windows 8What a laptop!! I have no idea what that other guy was talking about with the slow responding issue. This laptop is extremely fast!! I am able to play all sorts of games like minecraft and call of duty on nice settings. I will recommend this to anyone who wants a multimedia laptop! I was really happy with my purchase but I wish they had a back-lit keyboard included, not that big of a deal though.

I receive this laptop has a present. Its worked fine so far. No problems at all. It plays games like Minecraft, and even the original Halo combat evolved pretty well. If you are using it right, the battery could last for four hours, which is nice. Like I said in the title, it is a all around nice laptop.

The system with windows 8 seems slow along with learning the new system which is designed for a tablet and not the laptop

The screen in sunlight was difficult to read.

Samsung Series 5 NP500P4C-S02US 14-Inch Laptop

Samsung Series 5 NP500P4C-S02US 14-Inch LaptopOn the windows experience index the specs are:

Processor : 7.1

Memory : 5.9 ( I upgraded it to 8 gb ram now it's 7.5)

Graphics: 4.8

Gaming Graphics: 6.5

Primary hard disk: 5.9

I had this laptop for about a week now, and I gotta say I love it. It's very fast. I usually don't game that much, the only game that I play is "league of legends" and this laptop can handle it very well. I play on all high settings and still get 60fps. The keyboard feels very nice, very comfortable to type on.

The speakers are amazing! It's very loud when you put it on max. Speakers are also very clear.

I'm a new user to windows 8, and honestly windows 8 isn't really that bad. It only takes a couple of days to get used to. I tried testing out how long the battery would last. The battery lasted for about 4 hours when I had the brightness at max settings while streaming videos. The computer fan's quiet, it doesn't get that loud. Overall, I love this product.

***Update: Amazon and samsung have both changed the spec pages on this laptop to correct the error. After using the laptop, I found it to be very capable laptop. I play starcraft II on high setting just fine. The speakers are very load and very clear. The laptop does get hot during gaming, so keep it on a desk or table. The only problem I had, besides the original specs, was the slowness of loading programs and starting up. This was solved by installing an ssd. The samsung model I purchased had a cable the plugs into a usb port. There is software included to image the drive, but this laptop already has it on it. It could not be easier and the hard drive is easy to access on the bottom of the laptop. It was a night and day difference, I highly recommend the upgrade.

First off, there is no back-lit keyboard. There are settings for it, but it is not there. The plug is on the motherboard, but nothing is plugged into it. Also there is no sub woofer as mentioned in the specs. Samsung has the same errors on their site, so I don't know who to blame. Anyone who purchased this laptop, I feel bad, because you were lied too. I will be sending this back as soon as possible. Its a shame, because it seems like it would be such a nice laptop.

Just a few first impressions after spending a couple hours setting up this laptop.

1. The laptop that arrived was white, not gray as shown in the pictures. Not a big deal but some people might be put off by it.

2. **Uninstall 'Intellimemory'** While I was removing all the typical bloatware I noticed that RAM utilization was around 95%. Almost the entire 4GB was being used but barely 1GB of programs were using memory. Odd. Uninstalling 'Intellimemory' freed up all of the RAM and the computer runs much, much faster. I can't stress how important this is. This laptop is almost unusable with 'Intellimemory' installed....why would they do this??

3. The processor (Ivy Bridge i5) and RAM (DDR3 1600mhz) is above average for a $500 laptop but everything else is what you would expect at this price level. The display has nice colors but suffers from the 768p resolution and poor viewing angles that most laptops share today.

4. It is a very nice looking laptop. Not too heavy, not too thick, attractive looking.

5. Installing an SSD should be a priority. The only real bottleneck in the whole system is the 5400RPM hard drive. With an SSD installed, you end up with a very nice laptop for an investment around $620 total.

I opened this computer's package on March 5th, 2013, and it's been around 4 days since then, so I have been able to review this computer from its beginning to the end of its first four days. Please keep in mind that college student is reviewing this and likes to play games (not first person shooters, though) when he has free time. Any updates have the form YYYY/MM/DD.

*~The basic specs, which I think are important, are:

1. Intel i5 3210 2.50Ghz processor (a fantastic 3rd gen i5 processor at this time)

2. 4 GB RAM (I'm pretty sure that it's a DDR3, assuming that it's one stick)

3. 64bit with Win 8 (I don't mind Windows 8, but I'll list out its points later; the points I made are irrelevant to the laptop as a whole, since it's just the operating system and not about the laptop itself)

4. Integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics card (Intel has come far in its integrated processors)

5. Dedicated Nvidia GeForce 630M graphics card (this is what stands out for being $500; such a great deal. It's not that much better than the Intel HD 4000 graphics (I looked up video card reviews), but it's nice to have a graphics card with a processor dedicated to it.

6. Four USB ports (two of which are 3.0 USB)

7. A headphone/microphone jack (the only con to this computer in my opinion; I rather have separate jacks but can't wish for everything).

8. 5400 RPM hard drive (the "bottleneck" as one reviewer describes; will explain this later).

9. Fan on the leftside (it does a little hot when you game, but it's not alarming; personally, I like this better than having it on bottom, but lefties should be wary if they can tolerate this type of thing).

10. No backlit keyboard, even though some Fn keys on the keyboard exist for it. I plan to change these Fn keys in the future, if I can. Will update in comments if I ever get around to it (and if I remember >.>)

11. Speakers are good. If you're a musician or want something bassy, consider getting speakers for your needs.

UPDATE 2013/03/11: Speakers are clear and fairly loud. My previous laptop was pretty quiet, so I experienced a nice transition of sound.

12. Not as light as a ultrabook, but it's definitely not heavy to carry around.

13. I love this type of keyboard (the keys, man, THE KEYS). Not sure how to describe it, but I love it.

14. The screen size is a nice size.

15. UPDATE 2013/03/11: I did not know that this laptop had a SD card reader until today. It's located on the left side of the mouse bad, under the light that shows that the power is on for the laptop. Another plus for me.

16. UPDATE 2013/03/25: Screen collects dust/dirt, and it's noticeable. Not sure how I feel about this.

17. UPDATE 2013/03/25: Wireless connection has dropped me twice within an hour today for some reason. I'm not sure what is the cause for this, but I suspect that it has to do with the firmware or the driver of the wireless part. I contacted Samsung about this issue, and the customer service representative, after telling me update the driver through SW Update (which I already did), made sure that I didn't set the connection as a meter connection (it's a setting that turns off your connection after a certain amount of time, which I don't have on). Then, he advised me to "Forget My Network" (another setting) and to reconnect again. This may or may not solved my problem with wireless connection (we'll have to see), but it did fix my issue with loading Facebook's News Feed (which often seems to stop loading after I scroll down or click on "More Stories"). The customer representative mentioned that there may be incompatibility issues with the new Samsung drivers and the route older firmware. If this problem proceeds, either one should roll back the wireless drivers, or back up his or her information, do a system restore to the original factory settings, and proceed to update all drivers except for the wireless one. I'll update in a week to see if I still have any problems with the wireless connection.

*~Things that I have not checked out:

1. If RAM and hard drive are easily accessible (I'm pretty sure that they are, but too lazy to check :p ; will probably update this later either her or in the comments).

2. If fan is accessible (will check out later when I have the time; update will either be her or in the comments).

*~Important points concerning with changes that I made to the computer:

1. Intellimemory: this greatly overuses your RAM. I think that it's suppose supply things into your cache to load things faster, but it's just a hindrance. It shoots up my RAM to 87%. Your memory should be fine, around 30 to 40% if you don't add more RAM to the 4GB you already have, once you uninstall this program).

2. Uninstalled of some of the Samsung bloatware and apps.

3. Destroyed Norton trial, and used the default Windows antivirus and firewall.

4. Installed important or entertaining programs and apps (Firefox (including NoScript), Chrome, Malware Bytes, Spyware Blaster, CCleaner, foobar2000, AIM, Google Talk, Steam and other games, Python, Java SDK package, IntelliJ, Sublime, TortoisesVN, WinSCP, putty, DropBox, Media Player Classic, etc.)

5.1. Installed important Windows Updates. I recommend installing the optional updates if they concern your drivers or Microsoft programs that you use (ex: Office 2013).

5.2. SW Update/Updating Samsung drivers. This is important. It will take a while, but it's definitely worth it. You may encounter problems in updating some drivers (for me, it's the BIOS (now UEFI BIOS, which makes Windows 8 boot up much smoother) and one or two Bluetooth drivers). To fix this problem, go to SW update, look for the model, download the drivers that you need, run and install them (and you can delete the files afterwards). This will definitely help the update with Samsung drivers. I solved this by calling Samsung's Customer Service. In my opinion, one guys does not entirely represent the customer service (I don't view an apple tree as terrible if it has a bad apple), but I did have a great guy who helped me through the drivers issue.

UPDATE 2013/03/11: I also apply the "Bad-Apple-Not-Equal-Bad-Apple-Tree" perspective to computer products, but there is no doubt in my mind that Lenovo (Asus is pretty up there as well) makes great laptops; however, Lenovo laptops, unless they have great deals, are a bit too pricey for my basic needs, which is why I basically bought this laptop, even though it barely had any reviews at the time that I bought it. Don't get me wrong, I did see some great Lenovo laptops under $600 and even under $500 that were deals or on sale, but the Samsung Series 5 NP500P4C-S02US's 630M graphics card won me over.

6.1. Here's where the hard disk bottle neck comes in. The computer was very slow in getting to the login screen/loading the OS; it took more than forty seconds. I'm not entirely sure if the problem was due to the computer getting accustomed to itself (an analogy is opening the of spaghetti sauce for the first couple times; it's really hard to get that lid off, but it's easier after multiple tries!) or if it was the boot order, but I did alleviate some of the problem in the following point. However, keep in mind that the disk usage will still sometimes spike, but it'll not be as often as before I made the change that is mentioned in the following point.

6.2. Anyways, what I did was that I changed the boot order. I changed the boot order to the hard drive as first and the Windows Boot Manager as second. To do this, press Win key + I (go to Settings), click on "Change PC Settings", click on "General," and, under the "Advanced startup" section, click on "Restart now." After restarting, you will go a light blue screen. Click on "Troubleshoot," click "Advanced options," and click on "UEFI Firmware Settings" (the "new BIOS"), and restart your computer once more. You can change your BIOS settings (but I just recommend just changing the boot order). An alternative route is just hold the SHIFT key at the login screen access the UEFI. For some reason, the computer boots up less than thirty seconds after that. Now, the computer seems to boot up less than fifteen seconds, which is too much for me to comprehend this speed (I still feel like I live in the XP era). Programs load much faster than before.

7. Defragged my computer using the default defragger that came with Windows 8.

*~How does the Samsung Series 5 NP500P4C-S02US fare in games:

1. LOL: After several games, I got a bug splat once in League of Legends for putting everything on very high, so I went to Riot's "debugging" tools to help get rid of the bug splat. Once I put shadow on medium, I haven't ever had it since. I manage to get 60 fps on very high settings before and after the bug splat.

2. DOTA2. Plays Dota2 just fine on everything high (I did put shadow on medium, though). Don't remember the fps, but everything was mostly smooth.

3. OTHERS: Other games that I have are Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Portal and Portal 2, Bastion, and other Steam games, but I haven't tested them yet. Might update here or in the comments in the future.

This computer is great for casual gaming. It also works well in competitive and current games, but for some, medium settings are needed to play smoothly (ex: Crysis 3, there are some reviews about Geforce 630M graphics card). If you do not have a budget, consider getting a laptop with a much better graphics card. If you do have a budget and want to experience the highest graphics for every current game, consider getting a desktop. If you are a college student like me who likes to play games (sometimes, even competitively) in decent graphics, have a budget, and need a transportable computer device for school needs, this laptop is for you (the deal was so much better when it was $500, but now, the price increased).

Altogether, this laptop is fantastic and is fit for my school and gaming needs.

*~The pros:

1. Very fast now.

2. Boots up very fast.

3. The processor is really fast.

4. Did I mention that it's really fast?

5. Dedicated graphics card (even if it's low end).

6. Sound is nice.

7. Light to carry around campus and not hurt your back.

8. Keyboard design and the feel of the keys (personal preference).

9. Screen size is perfect (may be a little small for those who game, but I like it; again, a personal preference).

10. Plays some games on very high settings.

11. (UPDATE) Has an SD card reader.

*~The cons:

1. one jack for microphone and headphone (a small, unimportant, and personal preference)

2. Intellimemory (easily solved)

3. Boots up slow at first (a very difficult problem at first)

4. Minor driver update problems (for me, I had to call customer service; the guy I called was great, but Samsung should address these driver issues soon).

5. Disk usage sometimes spike (not sure why it spikes, but the spike will go down after a while; a SSD should easily solve this problem).

6. Cannot play all games on high settings very smoothly (Not a con for me == another personal preference; I'm fine with medium settings).

7. (UPDATE) Fn keys for non-existent lit keyboard settings; I'm not sure why this bugs me, but I'll update if I can find a solution for changing the settings for Fn keys.

8. (UPDATE) Screen collects dust, and it's noticeable.

*~The potential future:

1. Buy RAM (seriously, it's cheap. If you customizing any laptop on a website, get the smallest amount of RAM possible, and buy and install the RAM later. It's worth the effort and the price).

2. Get an SSD (can solve the boot problem without what I did earlier. SSD prices are going down and can only continue to go down. It will make all of my programs boot so much faster. I would buy one if I had the money).

*~Now, for the little Windows 8 tidbits that is not relevant to the laptop review:

1. Not really sure what the hate is about. Sure, the learning curve is a bit high, and it's hard to find some things, but you'll get used to it, especially most of it is just like Start button in Windows 7; what I'm saying is that Windows 8's Start Screen is just a glorified Start button.

2. Besides everything mentioned in the first point of Windows 8, everything in the desktop is the same. EVERYTHING.

3. I do not like the default settings for some programs in Windows 8, but they are easy to change (though, they could be unnoticeable). Examples include default defrag every week and default recycle bin warnings are off.

4. Task Manager is absolutely awesome and appealing. Now, you can change your Startup in there (a great, new feature!).

5. I really don't mind Windows 8, but there are some features that I wish that it kept from Windows 7 (like having folders in your search when you type some stuff in; Windows 8 doesn't detect all folders, but it does detect all progams and apps).

Conclusion: Windows 8 is pretty cool, and I like the direction that Microsoft is going.

Keep in mind that what I think of Windows 8 does not affect the overall laptop whatsoever.

I'm really content with laptop, since it's great for school and a little gaming, which is why I gave it a five out of five. I do have small personal preferences, but it shouldn't hinder the laptop as a whole.

If there is any additional comments that you would like to know, please comment below, and (hopefully, if I remember) I'll get around to it.

Apple 13.3" MacBook Pro (with Retina display) dual-core Intel Core i7 2.9GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB flash

Apple 13.3' MacBook Pro dual-core Intel Core i7 2.9GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB flash storageI've been on the market for a new mac for over a year now. I've put it off hoping the next year's upgraded version would be better value than the ones released the previous year, but when I found a deal (elsewhere for cheaper) for the exact same spec I pulled the trigger and never regretted it.

My work requires me to travel with my computer. I have been using a 5 year old white macbook with osx snow leopard prior to my purchase, and in my experience macs are reliable, sturdy, highly capable machines which lead me to the decision to stay with mac for this purchase. I use my computer for basic computing, word processing, excel, power point presentations, pdf files, light photo shopping and video editing. I'm highly dependent to the internet and send my files and exchange data online regularly. I've never had to use the dvd/cd drive from my last computer, at least not in the past 3 years, hence I am not sad that they got rid of it on the new retina macbooks.

At first glance you notice the quality of the retina display macbook. It has the same thought of design the previous macs had. Beautifully crafted, great materials and amazing feel. Macs just have that quality that makes you reach for that credit card with reckless abandon! Yes, it is exorbitantly priced compared to most other computers out there in the market but it is worth every penny. My old mac gave me 5 loyal years of service and until recently when I started noticing lag from the infamous (rainbow colored) wheel of death that shows up everytime my computer fails to compute-I have not had the need to replace it. They last long which is great considering how fast the turn over is for electronics these days. This 13.3 retina mac, while arguably an offering from late 2012 is still very current. It has the same exact specs as the feb 2013 versions with the exception of the bumped up speed of .1ghz, which in my opinion is highly negligible. It is also worth noting that this offering was over $500+ dollars more when it was first released at a price point of about $2,199.00 for the same specs offered here. This is a substantial savings for a highly capable and well made machine. If you consider the offering they have at the apple store, a feb 2013 macbook retina 13 with 2.5 ghz i5, 8RAM, 256Flash will cost you $1,699. If you are considering the upgraded version at 3.0 ghz i7, you'll have to pay an additional $200 for the upgrade + tax at about $115. Just the base model retina 13 is about the same price of this offering for better specs. A no brainer in my opinion if you are already set in purchasing a new mac anyway.

Performancewise, I have no complaints. The new trackpad took a bit of getting used to as I was accustomed to the old model track pad with the left and right click buttons on the bottom but other than that, everything about this mac is just perfect. The display is stunning specially for doing editing work and even just reading documents. The details just pop out and are absolutely superb. I tried watching a subpar quality movie online and even that looked great on the retina. The i7 dual core 2.9 ghz processor gives this machine an umph that i've never experienced before using other computers. It is speedy and very responsive. It can take multitasking jobs easily without issues, load videos quickly and can even do light gaming without a hitch. Overall, this is just a well made computer that's worth every penny. You won't regret getting it I assure you. So, if you're in the market for a new computer... get this one! Great value, great price for a super reliable product.

I spent A LOT of time debating which macbook pro was going to meet my needs. I wanted something to use mostly for photography and web while away from home (at home I use a Mac Mini, 2010 hooked up to a Dell U2412 which is excellent for photo editing). As a serious amateur photographer, I use Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 heavily. My concern was having enough juice to power these two programs with speed and ease. Most reviews recommended getting the 15" MBP as it offered a quad core and separate graphics card to handle the editing load. Having spent some time in the Apple Store, I knew that the 15" was just too big for me. I contemplated getting the regular MBP without retina as that machine offers the option to upgrade at a later time, which unfortunately the retina does not....but after seeing the screen on the retina, I just couldn't do it. So....I had decided on the retina MBP 13", but what about hard drives? I REALLY wanted the SSD, but the price was tough to swallow. I finally settled on this version. I knew that 8GB RAM would be sufficient, as that is what I have in my 2010 Mac Mini, and it's perfectly adequate to handle my editing. I also knew that 3 years makes a world of difference in technology, so even with the same RAM, the laptop would probably be faster. I was hesitant on the 236GB SSD drive, but knew that 128 was completely insufficient and I didn't want to drop the big cash for the 512 version.....so, I settled for this, knowing that I won't be dumping lots of programs on it and will keep my high res. photos on a portable drive anyway.

I can tell you that this computer is phenomenal. It is probably about 10x faster than my Mac Mini and the boot up time of the SSD is a dream. It handles Lightroom and Photoshop with ease. The screen is a bit small on real estate, but the clarity of the retina more than makes up for the space. This is the perfect "on the road" laptop for me. Now, if you are looking to make this your main computer, you may want to think twice. I just don't think it would suffice. You'd probably want to invest in the 15" with more power and perhaps skip the retina so you can upgrade in the future....but for travel, I couldn't be happier with this snappy machine!

Acer Aspire AS5560-8480 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Acer Aspire AS5560-8480 15.6-Inch LaptopGot this product for four hundred and thirty bucks, and for that price, I really feel like I got a great deal. You'd pay twice as much to get the entry level mac, but with much less capability. I essentially paid what you would for a decent tablet, but got a huge hard drive, well rated processor and graphics card, large, bright screen, and high quality webcam. I wanted something that I could load all my CDs onto (thus the need for a large hard drive), browse the web, skype, and use for working at home. So far it's proven very capable, and I'm not even completely familiar with everything else it does. I'm not a gamer, but the graphics card does meet the minimum requirements for virtually all games, and the recommended requirements for many. There's a website somewhere that lists all that.

My girlfriend has a Mac laptop, and I will admit that the build quality of it is far superior to the Acer. The Acer is not metal construction, nor does it feel as solid as the mac, but I would rather Acer spend the money where I wanted it...in the capabilities.

If you're looking for a budget computer with quite a few bells and whistles, this is definitely worth a look.

Very impressed with AMD's new CPU/GPU combo. Running SWTOR like a champ at decent settings (details and textures on high, bloom and shadows off, AA and AF low). The system is overall very fast and responsive. The design and aesthetics are pretty good all around. I would have preferred a matte screen over a glossy one but I knew that this one was glossy going in. The average user will be very happy with their purchase.

Buy Acer Aspire AS5560-8480 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Now

I've had this laptop for months now, got it in february and i must say it's a great product, i got mine with a 8gb ram upgrade, since day 1 it has performed flawlessly, it has enough power to run most programs and games (though do not expect high framerates in latest games), it doesn't have cooling problems though when gaming it can get somewhat hot but i think that is to be expected, the screen is acceptable, as in most laptops (even higuer end ones) you get washed out images when watching at the screen from certain angles, this is not the exception, you will have to be in front of the screen to get a good image quality, the only downside is the cd/dvd drive and the keyboard: i noticed the dvd drive itself sticking out of the laptop side after a few days, it still works well but that could have been built better; the keyboard is well built and confortable but it has lots of hollow parts under the keys and these are hard to reach it tends to get very dirty very quickly, good thing i always keep a little brush-pen specially for cleaning those hard to get areas in keyboards.

Verdict: Even though the keyboard and dvd drive problems i'd recommend this laptop to everyone, is a great deal and a powerfull machine.

This laptop is amazing. It has the ability to play most High-End games. The battery life averages around 5 1/2 hours off of a full charge. The screen is big, and quite clean. Its also easily upgradable for higher RAM(DDR3) which is a simple installation, though I don't think It's needed. The wireless capabilities function well, especially when used for gaming. I'm actually preferring to play some games on this, than on my Xbox360.

Overall: 5/5 Stars. Well worth the $500 for a great product. Perfect for gamers who are looking for a decent rig to run most games on Ultra.

Dell Inspiron 17 i17RM-2419sLV 17.3-Inch Laptop (Moon Silver)

Dell Inspiron 17 i17RM-2419sLV 17.3-Inch LaptopMay 5 Update: Dell Support was very helpful with a quick solution to upgrade the BIOS on the laptop. One that was complete, it became a nice quiet laptop that fully meets my hardware needs. Windows 8, however, I still do not like, but that is not what I'm reviewing here.

Original post:

I like everything about this laptop (not counting Windows 8 which, so far, I do not like) except for its fan noise. It's quiet for a little bit when I first boot it, but once it warms up the fan comes on and is annoyingly loud. Once on I have not yet had the fan slow back down into quietness. I haven't yet decided if this is annoying enough to return it. I'll decide that this weekend. All of my previous laptops were quieter than this one. I'm leaning toward a non-Dell but don't know which might be better and quieter.

I was replacing my older Dell with this one. I was very pleased and it was exactly what i was looking for. If you are not familiar with Windows 8, it will take some getting used to. I would buy this again hands down.

Lenovo U310 13.3-Inch Ultrabook

Lenovo U310 13.3-Inch UltrabookI just received my laptop. I looks just as it does in the picture. It is as beautifully petite and light weight as described. I am running windows 8 on this pc right now and though it takes a little getting used to, I love it. I just had a full charge and I'm waiting to see how long it lasts -I wonder if it will reach that 6 hour average.

A couple of things that I had to remind myself about...

1. windows 8 and google chrome are not really good together in my opinion. Windows promotes all the Microsoft products first of course. Internet explorer actually functions better with this interface.

2. this device doesn't have the optical drive therefore my old Microsoft office 7 cd cannot be installed yet, I'm looking for other solutions

3. the camera is not that great in dim lighting, I will explore how well it works outside tomorrow

4. the keyboard is great its is small enough for my small hands and allows me to type perfectly on here.

SO far soo good! I am enjoying this new product! It is a great buy for someone like me who was on a tight budget and needed an extra portable laptop to take to class daily. ( I Just sold my Toshiba satellite Ls500, it weighed 6 pounds).

The battery life is not what I expected, It requieres to be charged every 3 hours. It doesn't worth what I have paid. Elena

Overall, I like the size of the computer, and when it actually works I like it.

Now for the bad parts. I really dislike Windows 8. I feel as though it is made for a touch screen computer only and is very clunky and non intuitive. I also have had a few other numerous problems with this computer. One being the wireless capability. My phone, my wife's phone, and my old computer all connect to the wireless network with no problem. This computer goes in and out all the time, and when you are working "via the cloud" on things for work losing a connection every few minutes can be maddening. Also, perhaps most frustrating is that when the computer goes to sleep, or hibernates, or you close the lid, it will not restart to where I left off. I am simply left with a blank screen. I have called tech support on this issue numerous times and am given a ticket number. Every time I call, they adjust the power settings and tell me to call back if it recurs. I have called back again and again and have literally had this issue since I got the computer.

I was eventually referred to their "premium software support" team and was told that it might be a problem with their preinstalled software, and they could fix it but I would be charged. My argument was that if I was shipped a product that did not work, they should be responsible for fixing it. They did not see it that way.

I ended up contacting Amazon to complain about Lenovo's terrible customer support and my experience and they immediately offered to refund my money and take the computer as a return with no questions asked.

I was looking for an economical well featured lightweight laptop and onstensibly, this unit fills the bill.

It's quirky sometimes and locks up or reflects send/receive errors on Outlook but frankly, it's tough to know whether to ascribe those frustating deficiencies to the machine itself or the demons that befall a non-touchscreen version of the much maligned Windows 8.

I've added "Start8" to make it feel more like Windows7, but clearly, this is a WIN8 machine with a minor disguise.

Otherwise, it's fine -battery life is acceptable, weight is a bit heavy compared to other ultrabooks, but at the low end of the pricepoint, it's tolerable for travel.

I suppose reasonable minds would ascribe my challenges to the user(me)or Windows 8 . . not the machine itselfbut at this point, it's not what I would prefer . . but have to accept.

Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ 15.5" Notebook (2.4GHz Intel Core i3-370M 4GB RAM 320GB HDD DL DVD-RW Micro

Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ 15.5' NotebookI bought this laptop from a local Sony store 20 months ago for about $700. Sony was a good brand when I made this purchase. However I hesitate to purchase any Sony product after the bad experience.

I used the computer about 5 hours a day. Good part is that this computer is fairly fast, as long as you take good care of it. And the battery is still good today. However, the following problems caused the low rating:

1. The surface is made of very low quality plastic. You can scratch it using your T-shirt (and I mean it).

2. The video card is not compatible with the system. It even tells you so when you check the device manager.

3. The touch pad started to fail frequently after 10 month (and I use a mouse 90% of time).

4. The fan started to fail (and cause the fail of system) frequently after 11 month.

5. The microphone broke down after 11 month (and I use it about 1 hour every month).

The customer service was all right when I asked them to change the touch pad and fan. However, when the third problem showed up (the computer was still under warranty then), they refused to get it fixed for free anymore. What's worse, now both the fan and touch pad started to fail again with exactly the same symptom. I am pretty much convinced that those components were designed to last for only one year. And they won't only be installed on this particular model.

I won't give things up unless they are absolutely unbearable. But writing this review is the last thing I do with this computer.

Have had this computer since Christmas....great laptop! Rated a PC Editors Choice.....has wealth of features not found on laptops in this price range. Would highly recommend!

I am not a computer expert. Just someone who uses a laptop to work and have fun.

I work with an HP and with this VAIO, that was supposed to be a "home laptop".

It works "fine"...but Sony is not good designing laptops at all. Things that should

be very well known for any laptop designer, like the touchpad annoing interference when you type wore left in

second place... in an hp you can find very quick ways to disable it, for instance, but in vaio you

have to find through google..than find it in your computer.... but if you need to open an very

heavy and bad designed picture browser, you find it right on a button.... Ok it`s just one example...but there

are many others....little details (in mine, when i hibernate it, when it restarts it came back like if it have crashed...

Sony online team just asked me install a new service pack.....and it kept not working...

Looks like they gave the design task to a designer who never really worked with a good laptop...

Sorry about that...if you find it to be very, very cheap. Go arread. It`s better than nothing...but

otherwise, go to a lenovo or an hp...

Pedro

I love this laptop. It's fast, durable and still feels like a new laptop after almost a year of ownership. I say this because after owning an Acer Aspire laptop for a year, it felt so outdated and slow that I had to upgrade.

The keyboard is great and so is the touchpad; except, that the tiny bumps on the touchpad have a flat stop in the middle now.

The screen is nice a clear as well as very bright. Wifi on this is better than most laptops as I can get WIFI from 5th floor in a old concrete building in Chicago! (My n320 netbook can barely see the signal and I get 4 bars with this SONY)

Sony VAIO VPCEG33FX/B 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO VPCEG33FX/B 14-Inch LaptopI needed a new laptop after the hard drive on my 3 year old Dell laptop crashed a few months ago. Because I am a college student, I wanted a smaller computer to carry around campus or use comfortably outside of my room. The 14'' screen is a widescreen and is excellent for viewing pictures, videos, and movies. My old computer had a 15.5'' screen. I prefer a larger screen, but the bigger the screen, oftentimes, the heavier the laptop. This computer weighs about 5 lbs with the battery (without it, it is obviously much lighter), but it feels like it weighs much less. The keyboard is also a good size and the keys are not raised, so food, dust, and hair are less likely to get caught in the keyboard. I own this computer in black and the photos are true to real life. Orginally, I wanted this laptop in white, but decided against that because it would get dirty very quickly. The computer uses Windows 7. My old one had Vista, so I'm still getting used to Windows 7's new features. I've had this for almost a week and it is very easy to use.

PROS:

Screen size

Keyboard

Memory (4GB included. Very fast! I can listen to music, be on the Internet, and run other programs without the computer slowing down)

Hard Drive (640GB is more than enough space for me and the overall price is great.)

Weight

CONS:

The lid is not fingerprint proof. Even in black, fingerprints are still visble. Not a big deal to me.

The mouse is a little unrespnsive at times and the touchpad isn't very smooth. Not a deal breaker, however.

No recovery software included.

*Make sure to backup your files often on an external hard drive or CDs and make a recovery disc (instructions are provided). The computer does not have any discs containing the OS software or recovery information. *

I think this computer is really not that bad! Considering I bought mine at Best Buy for $320.00 and it runs very smooth! I to have issues with the mouse pad, but once I plug in my travel mouse which I prefer anyway everything is fine! I installed Norton 360 and have not had any issues with performance. Great laptop for the price considering most Sony's are astronomical. Thanks Sony for making a nice laptop at an affordable price.

A week after i had bought this laptop, it started to give me a hard time. It would slow down and freeze and I would have to restart it alot. I had to call Sony vaio Care a couple of times to fix it for me. So i did system restore and system recovery on it a few times. Even after all this, it would be okay for a while and then go back to its annoying ways. So i was basically going back and forth between the laptop giving me a hard time and me restarting it or calling Sony Vaio. If anyone purchases it, Good Luck with it.

Lenovo Y580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dawn Grey)

Lenovo Y580 15.6-Inch LaptopAesthetics: I think it's a beautiful laptop. Metal all around the keyboard area. The lid is entirely metal on the outside. It's a sleek design that is minimalist which I love.

Function: The 1080P screen is gorgeous. Watching movies and high quality YouTube videos is great. The JBL speakers sound better than any laptop speakers I have heard. One of my favorite features is the keyboard the feedback you get from the keys and the solid build quality makes it enjoyable to type on. Also, for you gamers, I get a solid 40-50 FPS on medium to high settings playing Battlefield 3.

I looked at about 5 different models from a variety of companies and this beat them in almost every category. My one gripe so far is Windows 8. The touchpad gestures can be quite annoying but I'm sure I will adjust to it in time. Of course, that is not the fault of the laptop, just an observation.

Also DO NOT ORDER THROUGH LENOVO. I had a lot of issues ordering through them and their customer service has been less than helpful (that is putting it very nicely). I don't know why I made the mistake of ordering through them initially. Ordered through Amazon and it was easy and they delivered on time, as always.

All in all, if this laptop fits in your price range, you will not find a better product. Highly recommend.

This is an amazing product. Not only super fast, with excellent screen resolution and very reliable but for sure the best that you can get for this Price.

On top of that it comes with Windows 8 which believe me is simply fantastic and easy to use with your current mouse.

I can see now everything in just one single dynamic tiles based home screen. My mail (all accounts), my messages, sports news, whats going on in Facebook, twitter etc.

If you are considering buying a computer in this price range, this is by far the best choice.

HP ENVY 14-1210NR 14.5-Inch Notebook PC (Silver)

HP ENVY 14-1210NR 14.5-Inch Notebook PCYou might be wondering what the difference between this and the HP Envy 14-1110nr 14.5-Inch Relic Laptop PC Up to 3.45 Hours of Battery Life (Carbon) While this HP Envy 14 has a larger HDD and a slightly faster processor, the HDD is a lot slower (at 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm). This difference in HDD speed is worth going with the other laptop with a slightly smaller (640GB) but faster HDD and slightly slower processor. Plus Amazon has it on sale for $924.99 right now. However if that 110GB of HDD space is really that important to you, you could go with this laptop; just trying to inform people!

I bought this recently to replace a Dell Studio 1537 that had its share of problems. After using this laptop for a few months (I bought mine this past April) I can say that it is definitely one of the best laptops I've used.

Pros:

1. Very solid feel to it. Being an aluminum body laptop definitely makes it feel better than the cheap plasticky feel that some laptops have. Some reviewers have stated that the laptop is heavy; I haven't really noticed it.

2. The webcam's pretty good... I've had Skype chats lasting for about 2 hours without the webcam shutting off. My previous dell's webcam was notorious for shutting off at random and not coming back on without a restart. The quality seems pretty good for an integrated webcam.

3. It's pretty easy to upgrade/replace parts, which is definitely nice given that previous laptops I've had make you jump through hurdles to get to them. All you have to do is remove 5 screws to take off the entire back plate. Very easy to do a thorough clean using compressed air.

Speaking on this topic, I upgraded the RAM on this computer to 8GB. I ended up using this:

Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9

amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-Laptop-Memory-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9/dp/B002YUF8ZG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309126699&sr=8-1

Perfectly compatible with this laptop, if anyone was interested.

4. There's a little circle in the top left corner of the trackpad that you can double tap to turn it off. Definitely a nice feature when you're typing alot and accidentally move the mouse by rubbing the base of your hand on the trackpad.

5. There are two exhaust fans in the laptop, one in the back and one on the right side. This helps in keeping the laptop cool... I've ran MATLAB with multithreaded code that takes several hours to run on this laptop and it never gets too hot.

Minor Annoyances:

1. The trackpad takes some getting used to, and sometimes feels unresponsive/stuck. You'll definitely need to invest in an external mouse for dedicated use of the laptop.

2. Although HP advertised the screen as being one of the brightest screens found, I've had laptops that have had brighter screens. The screen does display colors pretty well though.

Neutral Points:

1. Only 3 USB ports. Technically, it's 2 USB ports + 1 USB/e-SATA combo. I've never needed more than those 3 at any one time, although I could see where it could be an issue.

Overall, a solid laptop. Definitely recommended.

Overall I like this laptop alot. If it wasn't for my Cons, I would love this laptop and have rated it a 5 star. It was fast out of the box. It comes pre-installed with Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements which is awesome! It definitely makes me happy to have something better pre-installed than Windows Movie maker and Paint...yeesh! I definitely plan to test this laptop out with some gaming and photo/video editing to see how it performs under intense use, but I'm liking it's performance so far.

Pros:

-Great design

-Large 750gb hard-drive

-Nice LED screen

-Great graphics (switchable is a very nice feature for a laptop)

-Photoshop and Premier Elements comes pre-installed

-Fences is a cool add-on as you can hide your desktop whenever you want, not sure about the rest of the features but we'll see

Neutral:

-RAM...would have liked 6-8 GB but 4 gigs will do for now

-Envy Theme...I prefer the Windows Aero theme over the "Envy" theme. To me the Envy theme felt dated and dirty in appearance. If you install this theme you have to go into the MyColors app to reset the theme back to the standard Windows theme.

-No Blu-ray player. While obviously not a deal breaker for me, it would have been nice to have one included on this laptop.

Cons:

-Wireless Connection: I don't know what's going on, but my wireless shows Excellent connection (full bars) but lags at times loading pages and downloading. I'm going to look into it further, but it can get a little annoying. When running on a third-party browser (Chrome) internet seems to be better, so I'm thinking it's HP bloatware on the IE8 install, but will also look into driver updates for the wireless card.

-Touchpad: It's bigger and less responsive than I expected. My hand will also accidentally touch a part of it without realizing (this causes the cursor to jump away from what I was trying to do). Also, the left/right mouse buttons also move the cursor which causes the cursor to jump to a different part of the screen sometimes causing miss-clicks.

This was purchased to replace a HP DV-5. This notebook had several appeals that enticed me want to try it; the backlit keyboard and the included Photo Shop software. Upon getting and using the computer for a couple months there are something's that are amazing and a few bothersome things that could be improved.

Pros:

This notebook is genuinely built of hard quality material and you can feel that it will hold up for a long time. The beats audio is not bad and works great although sometimes the placement of the speakers at the bottom can be a bit awkward, unlike most notebooks that have the speakers at the top of the keyboard, just below the monitor. The included copies of Photoshop are greatly appreciated out of the box for quick editing. On the specs end, getting 4 GB of ram and a 750 GB hard drive up front is great and the processer speed works out great for demanding applications. Least I forget to mention the backlit keyboard that outside of the Mac realm is not standard on many notebooks PC's.

Cons:

There are several things that disappoint me about this notebook. First it has a beautiful screen but it is covered by a plastic cover leaving an "air gap" between the LED display and you. Why this is so bad is it produces more glare than you would normally get with a notebook screen and on top of that placing that plastic on top of the screen makes the picture seem less clear and kind of washed looking. My second major concern is the jumpiness and overall design of the touchpad. Overtime I believe a software update can fix this but for now it's bothersome. I use a regular mouse anyway so it's not that big of an inconvenience. I'm not so concerned with the lack of a VGA port or only having 2 USB + 1 Sata but one could always have more.

Overall I would recommend this computer and would love to give it 5 stars but for the way the display is designed and the jumpiness and inconsistent response of the touchpad I'm giving it 4 stars.

After many reviews and thorough searching for a good deal, I finally purchased my Envy over a month ago.

I am very pleased with my purchase and loved the overall performance of the components. Only flaw would be the touch pad which doesn't recognize certain actions, but getting a wireless mouse would fix that problem.

The design of the Envy is sleek, and the performance is top notch. I was very impressed with the sound card which is Beats Audio. The laptop speakers are weak but plug in some good headphones and enjoy the crisp thumping of your favorite tunes. I compared my sound card to one of my friends recent laptop purchases and even he was impressed by the sound quality! The interchangeable graphics card is also a neat feature and the display is impeccable.

Coming from a Sony Vaio, I can say that I am pleased with my HP Envy! I'd give it a 8.5/10. If it had Blu Ray capabilities then we would have a perfect 10.

I am typing this review on the laptop I gave my wife after getting this laptop for myself off of Lenovo's web site. I started out with a very good opinion and past experience with the older IBM ThinkPad laptops that I used at work. I should have known something was wrong when Lenovo told me it would take longer than a month to get the computer to me. When I called them to find out why, I did not get a real explanation (I do not remember, since it was over a year ago). I asked them if I found a computer as good in Best Buy before they shipped it, could I cancel my order. Low and behold, the computer was at my doorstep in a few days after that. Unfortunately, I got one with Vista and the updated sound drivers kept conflicting with the sound card. I took it to Geek Squad (the first time in my life) and they fixed it by back-rev'ing it to a version of the driver which would work. Finally, only four months after the manufacturer's warranty expired, it started freezing up 15 minutes to an hour after start up. I have eliminated every other possible cause except hardware. After talking with Lenovo support, my only options now are paying premium for an extended warranty or stare down paying another $200-300 just to get my computer to work for an undetermined period of time.

Please learn from my pain. Lenovo's are garbage to promote extended warranty scams. This Chinese-owned company does not stand behind its product for good reasons. Even if the other computers are made in China as well, at least make sure they are not owned by a Chinese company (this is the only thing I can figure out).

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXB 14-Inch Laptop (Sharkskin Black)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXB 14-Inch LaptopComputer is very-light and the perfect size at 14". The back-lite keyboard is a nice feature, but it does not seem to distract or enhance much. I thought perhaps if you got the white version that might be problem, but I got black, so it's just a really cool cosmetic feature. Bootup time is really fast and impressive. Computer does not make any weird "processing" sounds. The speakers are on top (not the bottom), so there is no distortion of sound. The usb drives are all up front, so it would be nicer to have those in the back. It would also be nice to have a 10-key pad, but you really have to go up to a 15.6" for those, and those really are too big for me. Wish it had a micro sd slot instead of a pro duo slot, but it is a Sony. Processor and graphics are pretty good but not great. But not at all bad, and I upgraded from netbook, so I am really noticing and benefiting from the speed difference. Overall, I would recommend this computer. I think between a PC, 15.6", 13", and those netbooks, this size really gives you the best of everything that you are looking for including: a DVD drive, 6GB RAM (that's a lot), and a hard drive with well over 500 GB of storage (640GB to be exact), good graphics, i3 processor (of course i5 and i7 are better but most people wouldn't even need that and many computers out of box come with much worse), without being too big or heavy. This is a really great value and design. Buy it with your Amazon credit card like I did and you save 3% on top of that!! Highly recommend this.

The Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXP is a pleasure to use! The laptop itself is an eye-catcher because of its bright, pink case and illuminated, soft-to-the-touch keys. Beyond that, it's a real workhorse.

This laptop performs all the tasks I desire and allows me to run multiple applications at once. I have had no problems using my VAIO to write papers, explore the web, stream movies and music, download songs to my iPod, play DVDs, read e-books, connect to my wireless printer and run educational software. The web cam and microphone are also adequate and easy to use. I'm not an avid gamer or video editor and can't comment on how it would handle those projects.

However, I would like to comment on two features that attracted me to the VAIO:

The Backlit Keyboard I love having a laptop that I can use with the lights off. My only gripe is that the only way you can turn it off is by changing the settings in the VAIO Control Panel (under "Keyboard and Mouse"). There should be a keystroke (ideally a switch or button) to turn the back lighting off when it's not needed.

VAIO Gesture Control Waving your hands around to skip back and forth through songs and control volume is a bit silly, but I want to do it! This feature is disabled by default when you receive your laptop and can be turned on through Sony's Media Gallery or VAIO Gesture Control. According to the settings, you can use it when running Media Gallery, Windows Media Player, Power DVD and Internet Explorer. I find the camera to be very fussy about your distance from the computer and it doesn't pick up your gestures in poor or dark lighting. I'm not sure how much more time I'll devote to trying to master gesturing because it's faster to use the clickable touch pad.

I almost didn't purchase this laptop because I was concerned about negative reviews about the clickable touch pad on previous VAIO models. I've never used a touchpad like this before and it took me a short time to get acquainted with it. I recommend practicing and watching the tutorial video (also in the VAIO Control Center under "Keyboard and Mouse") to novices like me. Scrolling and enlarging images with two fingers is my favorite part.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend a Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXP to my friends or people who perform similar tasks. I haven't had a computer that I could get THIS excited about in years!

Buy Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXB 14-Inch Laptop (Sharkskin Black) Now

It truly pains me to write this review. I researched laptops more than I should have, spending a lot of time trying to figure out just the perfect one for me. I decided to spend a little more than my $400 budget, and went with the $550 Sony. All my laptops have been in that $400 to $500 range, so this was a bit higher than normal for my wife and I.

I received it quickly, and really liked the looks of it (I did check out a similar model at BB). We opened it and noticed the keyboard was not properly snapped into place, so I just pressed on the outer perimeter and snapped in all the edges. Typing on the keyboard felt nice. I liked the backlight too!

The touchpad was not great. I am accustomed to just lightly tapping my finger on the pad to click, and with the settings adjusted to be very sensitive, the touchpad would still require a few tries before it accepted my "tap input".

The left and right buttons are on the corners of the seemingly continuous touchpad. They are very flimsy and feel awkward to use.

Multitouch input is a FAR cry from any smart phone I've used. It usually took a few tries to get it to function the way I needed it to. I mean, come on Sony... this is 2012. Is this technology stuff that tough? Sony has always been a great brand, but the touchpad is as if its never been invented before and I'm getting a beta version of it on my laptop. $300 laptops have a better feel in the touchpad than this one.

The speakers were VERY tinny and pretty quiet. I guess I'm spoiled from the speakers on my 17" Acer laptop that had some kind of built in subwoofer. I thought those were mediocre, but now I can appreciate them more. This Sony has lousy speakers. Don't let the fancy trademark fool you.

FINALLY... the MAIN reason I returned this product. The screen. How is it that a laptop that is 4 years NEWER than my best one in our home has a screen not as bright, not as crisp, and lacks in deep blacks in comparison to the older ones? Shouldn't there have been improvements over the past 4 years? Keep in mind, we never have spent this much on a laptop.

Also, the screen had a blue tint that was impossible to adjust. We had to put the screen at its brightest, and it still wasn't as bright as any other computer in the house. It appears Sony has put cheap technology in this thing all over.

In conclusion, technology should ONLY improve over time, but this laptop was a step back to 2004 technology in some ways (obviously not the processor speed). I have to send this back because the the poor touchpad, the screen quality, and the processor created as much heat as my old Acer (one reason I really wanted a new computer... a burnt lap gets annoying). My wife also mentioned her opinion of it right out of the box was that it had a cheap feel. I don't know about that, but that was her input.

I'm regretfully sending this back. I REALLY wanted that Vegas movie editing software it came with too.

I received this laptop a couple days later than was posted. But so far I'm pretty happy with it. Very good webcam, the keys light up when you type which is very helpful. I had never owned a 14 in before and thought that it would be too small but it's just right. It doesn't have a number pad to the right, so that's taking some getting used to. But it's very light weight and hasn't overheated. The only issue that I have with it, is that you have to push the keypad a little harder than on other laptops to get it to click. It's only been a few days, but so far I am satisfied with it. Will update in a few months if things change.

Granted you could probably get a better deal out there for another laptop form another brand with better specs. Trust me ive seen plenty. Yet None of those in this price range compare to the styling on this one. the wife loves the VAIO line, she comes form a VAio N which has served her well for the past 3 1/2 years. It took various drops and even one lcd change, but never failed her. So obviously she wanted another Vaio. This computer is a perfect size, 14" is a sweet spot for laptop screens. She is a fan of 15 inchers yet due to her carrying it around on our family trips and sometimes to work i wanted something lighter. This laptop is light enough to carry all day, and battery life is good, not great, but very good. We get around 5 to 5 and a half hours on it, surfing and watching youtube videos. Trackpad is good, not like my MBP, but very good for a pc. i3 processor is fast enough for daily use. I doubt most people need more. 6gb ram is great no need to upgrade for a long time. Keyboard is good and backlight is a plus. So far we are very pleased and like i said you might get a better deal specwise, but build quality at this price range you can't really beat and styling is an added extra. One thing you should know there is a bit of flex on the trackpad area but nothing we cant live with. Same trackpad on my work Vaio S13P does not have this but then again that laptop costs almost 3 times as much.

HP g6-1d60us (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop

HP g6-1d60us Laptopsetup took less than 5 minutes and from the point where you turn on the laptop to where you are logged in and able to get on the internet is less than 30 seconds... it has an amazing graphics card with a 6.0 rating on the windows index rating.... it has a base score of a 4.5 which for Aero graphics... for windows 7... i was lead to believe by some of the photos that it had a blu-ray drive... but sadly it does not... it can still burn dvd's and cd's so i am okay with that... This is a very good laptop for its price... and it does not feel cheap at all.. i bought a desktop computer for 800 dollars 3 years ago, my desktop still has a better processor, but this laptop beats the socks off my desktop when it comes to graphics... it can play a lot of the newest games like Battlefield 3 and modern warfare 3 :D! i think the only downside somewhat is the screen, it is not as High Def as i want it to be... my Desktop Dell Inspiron One 19 is still better when it comes to screen quality... and i am always amazed when i watch full screen on it, but for this laptop, the quality is very good, but the colors dont seem to be as vibrant as my desktops... you can sort of fix it by messing with contrast, brightness and color under the display setting in the control panel... but if you like to play games, or even want this for school work or business... i will recommend this laptop, it can install Microsoft Office 2010 out of the box as long as you have a trial key... and so far i am loving it :D! runs great and fast.... And for the speakers, they are louder than my desktops, but of course they dont have a good base, so i still use my trusty headphones to listen to my songs... but it is always fun to unplug my laptop and let my friends listen to the music as well, mainly because it sounds pretty good :) if there are any questions please feel free to ask and i will try to answer them

----EDIT----

i took away one star for those people who like a long battery life, i do not care that much for this part, because i carry around my laptop charger anyways...

I am 16. I have built three computers from parts, and have a small side business fixing computers. My old laptop recently died on me, and my parents purchased me a netbook for school. Perhaps i am spoiled by my six core desktop, but my super slow netbook was unacceptable for me. I did some research, and found on that my my needs/wants. This laptop has almost instant response time, runs windows 7 64 bit, and has half a gig of video card memory. I was a little wary of the idea of splitting the CPU between a graphics card and the main CPU processes, but i have had no problems with that. It can play all the games i own, and will usually put new games on high settings, but some times i lower the settings back down to medium to avoid the rare lag that occurs. I have played Modern Warfare 3, Dawn of War II, Civilization V, Supreme commander 2, and TF2 without any issues. I can see using this laptop for the next 3 or 4 years. And at only $430, this is a great deal.

I ordered this laptop after I cracked the screen on my other HP. I am absolutely in love with it. Has Windows 7, has HDMI and VGA outputs so I can connect my laptop to the TV. Keyboard is awesome, keys do not stick and they are space perfectly apart. Scroll pad is awesome as well, doesn't lag and moves as fast as my finger does. Great graphics, I am not a gamer or anything, I use this for my homework, and it exceeds every requirement I have. LOUD speakers. Comes with SRS speakers, crystal clear sound! Battery life is excellent, considering my old laptop would only last about 30 minutes unplugged. This one last about 4 hours. VERY FAST delivery, got it in two days. Never runs hot, and starts up soooo fast. Set up was super easy as well. I would recommend this laptop to any college student. As long as your not using this to play WOW or other large online games then this is the laptop for you. Absolutely no complaints here. HP computer just keep getting better and better!

You can't go wrong with this price! My old computer bit the dust, and this is a more than adequate replacement! Here's my take on the system so far:

Packaging:

Pretty minimalist, and well secured. Amazon did not do a good job packing the box, as it was allowed to shift during transit. The packaging by HP is well done, and it kept the computer safe on its journey. Everything was easy to unpack. Here are the contents:

-Computer (of course!)

-Power cord (two part with a brick)

-Battery

-Get started guide

-A few advertisements for accessories

-A note pad (useful!)

First Impressions:

The computer has a pretty slick look to it. It's lightweight and opens easily on its hinge. The keys will take some getting used to-they are very flat and square. The track pad is generously sized-and has a dotted texture. Overall, the computer is well put together, but it has a plastic feel to it.

Running the computer:

It's swift and responsive. There aren't too many pre-installed programs; which is quite awesome! As an upgrade from Windows XP, it's going to take some time to adjust. But, that aside, everything runs like a charm. I haven't had a chance to test out the battery yet, as the computer has only been in my possession for two days.

I'll update if anything goes awry, but so far, this was an unbelievable deal!

I purchased the same laptop from Staples for over $100 less than here when it was on sale several weeks ago. It has about five hour battery life on a FULL Charge with normal screen brightness. With a dimmed screen, the battery life should be longer. But I still like a brighter screen, and five hours are more than enough for me. (The other reviewer complaining battery life might not get a full charge before testing, I guess)

My 1d60us comes with A4-3320M CPU, which has 2MB L2 cache, vs. A4-3305M's 1MB. It also comes with a 750GB hard drive, not the 640GB advertised. I am not the only one who got those upgrades. But I can not tell what the Amazon ones are like. If you might need to connect your laptop to a HD TV, the HDMI on this computer is a convenient feature. Not all the notebooks on this price range have HDMI, and bluetooth as well.

ASUS X201E-DH01 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

ASUS X201E-DH01 11.6-Inch LaptopRatings Summary: 4-Stars for the technically capable. 1-Star for the novice.

The ASUS X201E is like, what I call, an Ultra-Chromebook. It is in the price range of a Google Chromebook notebook computer. I bought mine for $299 with free shipping. There are indeed some serious issues with the stock product that required an easy solution by a technically capable person. However, this product is a poor release with abysmal product testing with regard to WIFI connectivity. ASUS should have caught and resolved some serious software problems prior to being available for sale.

The big problem: WIFI

I struggled with WIFI on this computer with the stock Ubuntu 10.04 release. The WIFI took a long time to connect, and then it would 'hang' periodically. The remedy that worked: A stock install of Ubuntu 12.10. So, the WIFI issue has been resolved with a fresh install of the latest Ubuntu OS.

It has now been two weeks, and I still am working well with the WIFI solution that worked for me.

Performance: "Great!" (for it's intended purpose)

This computer is like a Chromebook or the class of computers formally known as a Netbook. That means you can use it to perform nicely for you for office work, web developer work, travel, communications, music, and watching videos. If you want to play any 3D FPS games, don't even go there. It is not meant for 3D FPS games or video editing. But that is not why I want a highly portable notebook computer.

My real-world (well, sort of) performance tests:

I played 4 videos simultaneously with a dozen open browser windows and tabs. I had a couple of games (Sodoku and Mahjongg) opened, and I had one browser window playing a YouTube video. I also had one Virtualbox open with windows Vista in it with a browser opened (I am a web developer so, I do need to test on IE browsers). Overall, that's way more going on than I will typically be doing at any given moment by far.

With all of that my CPUs were maxiing out at 90% of capacity, and my memory was about 2GB of the 4GB available. The computer still performed satisfactorily, and I could move about with almost no noticeable issues (the YouTube (flash) video did have a few problems competing for it's time-share slot).

In a more realistic tests of the somewhat troublesome YouTube playback in the "stress test", I closed everything except a couple of browser windows. One played a YouTube video, and it did so without flaw.

Battery Life: pretty good

I get about 4.5 hours of real world usage on the battery. Overall, that meets my requirements. My typical use without plugged in power is a meeting at a coffee shop or something for an hour. So, it the less-than stellar battery life is well within my operational needs.

When I am on a plane, I really only use my Nexus 7 tablet for reading, audio books, videos, and games. The tablet is much better for a plane than even a small computer like this, IMHO.

Ports and Connectors: Two USB 2.0 ports; One USB 3.0 (sweet!); One HDMI (full sized); One VGA; Multi-card reader; Ethernet! Combo headphone / mic

Other very good qualities:

* The case is very nice, with a textured feel that is nice

* The keyboard and track-pad work very nicely, and the large track-pad worked perfectly

*The sound system is very loud. This is far superior to many notebook computers I have owned. It is a bit wanting in the base, but there is no problem with the volume .. I think it goes to 11.

*The screen is excellent for viewing straight on, or on there lateral periphery. It gets washed out in the tilt quite a bit, but I wouldn't use it that way any way.

This Computer is Good For:

*General office work: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, browsing, etc

* Developer: web-development, edit source code, browsing, browsing in virtual box (like Vista, Win7, XP, ...)

* Server: Apache server with PHP, etc; local storage server, music server, video server, etc.

* Travel: lightweight enough at 3 pounds; power adapter is multi-voltage/freq, SD slot for camera photos, USB-3.0 for fast external storage; wifi a/b/g/n + ethernet. And with a "Chromebook" cost of under $300 not too painful if it were lost or stolen.

* Simple non-3D FPS games: Solitaire, Mahjongg, Sudoko, etc.

Simple to moderate image processing. Excellent for casual user for editing travel photos

* Nice for listening to music with the speakers. No need for an external set like many laptops

* Videos play flawlessly from the hard drive, and streaming video worked without any hiccups or problems

* Google-Earth no graphics problems the rendering of the 3D images worked well

Not Good For:

* Gaming of any type where 3D and FPS is important at all

* Video editing

* Serious/Professional Photoshop work

Ratings for the market this notebook serves (5-Star scale):

Design: 5 Stars: nice size, nice feel to cover

Portability: 4 Stars: under 3 pounds is great (2.5 would be better!)

Build quality: 5 Stars: it feels pretty solid

Keyboard & Trackpad: 4 Stars: keys feel good, trackpad works nicely. It would have been nice to have a back-lit keyboard

OS and Software: 5 Stars: I augment my Ubuntu experience with the Cinnamon desktop, but that's the beauty of Linux: "to each their own".

Overall:

FAIL: 1 Star Overall Rating for a Novice computer user because of the out of the box WIFI issue. This product meant to work out-of-the-box and it didn't. All you will do with this abysmal failure is turn people off to Ubuntu. Shame on you ASUS!

For me, and any technically capable person, it is a solid 4-Star device. But I thought since it came stock with Ubuntu, this would be the first time I wouldn't need to tweak a computer to get it working for me. This was a disappointment.

In the end, I am satisfied. Frankly, I wish it would have come installed with a minimal crippled version of Windows-8. That way, I would have simply installed Ubuntu 12.10 from the start, and I wouldn't have had any WIFI problems. However, with the savings of the "Windows Tax", I can use that money to buy my lift ticket at Mt. Bachelor today.

This laptop manages to be both sleek, and offer considerable connectivity. You get one USB3 port, two USB2, one Ethernet, HDMI, VGA, and SD card slot. Then there is Bluetooth. That's pretty good for a cheap machine.

I purchased this for my wife, who prefers the XFCE desktop. Unfortunately, the XFCE power management seems to fight with the power management in the Unity desktop. Upgrading to XFCE 4.10 (via a PPA) seems to have helped. There have been wireless problems, but upgrading to kernel 3.2.40 seems to have helped (the latter upgrade was automatic).

When power management works, the computer suspends, but doesn't hibernate. Since the computer uses Intel's Sandy Bridge chipset, suspend uses very little power. There is also remarkably little space on the drive, given it's capacity (320 G). That can be traced to an empty, extended 105 G NTFS partition. I suppose you can mount it and put stuff there (like Windows?), or you can use GParted to resize it and the other partitions, or possibly delete it and resize the other partitions. It's a strange disk arrangement.

This is not a netbook. Yes the Asus uses a wimpy Celeron, but that Celeron is more powerful than the Intel Atom CPUs that resided in netbooks. Further, this machine comes with 4 G of RAM. Perhaps the greatest speed boost comes with the CPU's support for virtualization. That means a five fold speed increase over what an Atom based CPU can do when running Virtualbox.

The other big improvement over a netbook lies in the screen. It's bigger (11.6", instead of 10.1") and sports a higher resolution 1366x768. This is a resolution found in all sorts of cheap laptops. The difference here is that such a resolution looks good at 11.6".

Battery life is something better than 4 hours. You can't swap the battery, because it's built in. The keyboard works, and has the typical, poor Asus layout. There was room for dedicated PgUp-PgDn, Home-End keys, but Asus chose to ignore this and make them all function key based. On the plus side, the touch is OK, and there in no keyboard "bounce."

What you get is a cheap machine with no "crapware," update capabilities that are second to none, and that runs quickly. That said, since it is running Linux, it will continue to run quickly.

Update 3 Apr. 2013: Issues with power management on XFCE when installed after Ubuntu's Unity interface persisted, so I installed Debian. This marked my first 64 bit install, and my first install on a UEFI machine (all the previous machines had a BIOS). I burned a Debian Wheezy netinstall disk to CD, and rebooted. Holding the ESC key when booting brings up the UEFI menu. There were two CD boot options, one that listed my drive, and the other that listed it with UEFI. You want the latter, trust me. ;)

If you want to add Skype, or any other 32 bit only software, the command given as root, "dpkg --add-architecture i386", is your friend.

What did I loose by going to Debian? The screen brightness and touchpad disable function keys. I typically set up the touchpad with Synclient, and add palm detection, so the touchpad toggle is no great loss, but the screen brightness is. The package xfce4-power-manager-plugins adds a slick widget you can add to your panel (taskbar) that lets you adjust the brightness.

What did I gain? Speed. As usual, Debian is a lighter weight distribution by default. I gained a more intelligent partitioning, with about another 100 G for data. I also gained the ability to hibernate the machine.

To sum up, I'm still scratching my head over some of Asus' choices when offering this machine. Why they included an unused, 100 G NTFS formated partition escapes me. Also, I'm not sure why they did not include hibernation support. In general, Ubuntu, even with their long term releases is buggier than Debian, but if you don't like to "play" with your machine, and you are satisfied with the Unity interface, this remains a good buy.

Update 14 April, 2013: An update to Debian Wheezy has fixed the screen brightness keys.

Update 15 May, 2013: Received a second unit to set up for another person. Part of the setup included a Debian install with most of the drive encrypted. I used an encrypted LVM (logical volume manager), and it went fairly smoothly, except when the installer announced it was erasing the drive. It was an extremely thorough erasure, as it took 18 hours. Only then did the installer proceed with partitioning the drive.

The encryption is largely transparent in operation. The only time you realize you are running an encrypted disk is when booting, or resuming from hibernation.

Update 1 July, 2013: A third unit developed wireless connection issues. These included difficulty connecting, spontaneous disconnects, and strongly fluctuating signal levels. I finally removed the back of the unit, and discovered a loose antenna wire. The plug used (I'm assuming it's an industry standard) is extremely small, and hard to line up properly, but once properly plugged in, all issues went away.

Buy ASUS X201E-DH01 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Now

The Good:

+ Low Cost

+ Easy Setup

+ Fast Boot

+ Lightweight

+ Ample Hard Drive

+ Decent Keyboard

The Bad:

Wonky Trackpad

Popular Streaming Services Require Workarounds

Spotty Printer Support

No Exchange Sync (At Least For My Company)

Erratic Bluetooth Performance

Poor Android 4.1 Support

Overall: While it is not perfect, the ASUS X201E-DH01 is an excellent Windows and Chromebook alternative.

Background: I was looking for something more portable than my 15.6" Windows laptop and more work oriented than my Android tablet. I've actually soured a bit on the tablet experience, and I'm trying to decide if I need or even want one. I was actually looking at the Acer C710-2055 when I stumbled across this model from ASUS. The specs are quite similar with the exception of the OS (Ubuntu Linux vs. Chrome). For the extra $20, I decided to get a machine with a full-fledged OS that works offline by design.

Setup: Unlike what some others have reported, my X201E came with Ubuntu 12.04 pre-installed. When I powered it on, there wasn't a whole lot to do. However, the initial boot does take a while. It guides you through a simple process collecting some basic information such as language, time zone, etc. It also asked me to create a user account with a password, which is easy enough. From there, I was ready to roll after a reboot. I had no problem adding my wireless network (or subsequent networks). I have connected to hidden and enterprise networks without issue. As long as you know the settings, you get in. If setup were the only consideration, I would say that this laptop is for any user level.

User Input: The keyboard of the X201E has the common "chicklet" style keyboard, and it feels good to type with. It has enough resistance so that it doesn't feel bouncy. However, it is not overly stiff either. The layout is pretty good, yet some may find the lack of dedicated page up, down, etc. buttons a disappointment. They are available through the function key, but I do find that I miss them on long web pages. The trackpad, on the other hand, has fewer positives. Actually, it is really no worse than most trackpads, and I really think these were invented to promote mouse sales. The trackpad doesn't have separate buttons, and it just doesn't feel comfortable. However, my biggest gripe (with trackpads in general) is the accidental touch during typing that sends your cursor to some distant place on the page away from where you intended to type. For serious typing sessions, I use a mouse and disable to trackpad. This does create a tradeoff for portable use. Do I fight through the wonky trackpad or take a mouse with me from conference room to conference room?

Web Browsing: Unless you are a die-hard IE fan, you have good options for browsing the web. The X201E has Firefox installed by default, but I preferred Chrome. It was easy to download and install from Google's site. With limited exceptions (that I will note in a later section), it is indistinguishable from using Chrome on a Windows machine. It is here that I access both my Gmail and Corporate email, and I also use Evernote to go paperless in meetings.

Office Software: Ubuntu comes with LibreOffice installed by default (although there are a couple of other options to try if it is missing your favorite features). Here's the bottom line, though. No matter what you choose, nothing is going to work seamlessly with docx, xlsx, pptx, etc. files. Microsoft doesn't want this to happen, and they have done a good job of keeping things this way. For my purposes, however, I generally only need to be able to view documents on the go, and any MS Office alternative does a good enough job. One last note item in this area is e-mail. There is not an Outlook equivalent in any of the other office suites, and Thunderbird is the default email client. I looked for Exchange support, and found that a Thunderbird plug-in was supposed to work with Exchange Web Services (EWS). I installed the plug-in, but I could never get it working. This may have as much to do with how my company has exchange setup, but the lack of support for corporate email is nonetheless disappointing.

Media: As I mentioned earlier, I have my entire music collection copied to my X201E. The default music player for Ubuntu is Rhythmbox, and it is sufficient for my needs. You do have to go through some extra steps to enable mp3 decoding because this requires proprietary drivers. This is a Linux philosophical issue, and true open source distributions do not enable proprietary software out of the box. This is the first feature that is likely to trip up the Linux novice. Googling reveals easy to follow steps, but the X201E just became work for the lay user. Video playback is another story. Both Netflix and Amazon Instant Video streaming are non-functioning out of the box. There are workarounds for these, but I was only able to get Amazon Instant Video working in Firefox. My Netflix has sound but no picture, and this was after a lot of work. Even with Amazon Instant Video, it doesn't look good when maximized. The streaming quality seems to be set for the "in browser" sized video. YouTube works well enough. I don't really watch stored videos, but support for this is available through clients like VLC. However, as with mp3 formats, you may need to install proprietary software in order to watch a particular format. This will definitely be the case if you connect an external DVD/Blu-Ray player. Perhaps video (streaming at least) is something better left to the likes of a Kindle Fire HD.

Bluetooth: This is not a core feature requirement for me, but I decided to test it out and report my findings. First, I tried my pairing with my HTC Rezound. Things started out rocky, and they never really got better. My first attempts at pairing were unsuccessful as neither device could see the other after making them both visible. I tried again on a subsequent session, and I was able to pair the devices. However, they didn't agree on the profiles that their pairing supported. My Rezound wanted to send phone and media audio to the X201E while the X201E wanted to send and receive files. As you might expect, ne'er the twain shall meet.

Other: So far, this might not sound like much of a differentiator from the Chromebook, but there are other uses beyond my core requirements that others a likely to find appealing. Linux has a good array of photo and video editing software that the Chrome OS just can't come close to matching. It would also be trivial to grab Eclipse and other Java development tools although I'm not sure how these would perform on the limited hardware. The point is that have a full-fledged OS gives you a lot of options. There are also a fair number of games, but that is not really my area of expertise.

Overall: This ASUS X201E is a unique device. It is one of two current laptops (the other is from Dell targeted at software developers) from major manufacturers that comes with Linux installed. Depending on your needs, this might be the perfect low cost, portable alternative to Windows that you are looking for. Potential Chromebook users should definitely give it a look.

This is not a laptop to do heavy lifting with, but for web surfing, a pretty close to perfect ssh terminal thin client.

BIOS can be upgraded without needing any boot CDs or Windows installs, which is nice.

Laptop came with Ubuntu 12.10 [nothing wrong with it], but I removed it right away and put Fedora 18 on it. The only thing that doesn't work 'out of the box' is the gigabit ethernet, but the driver can be easily compiled and loaded by following these directions:

One heads up, even though the title says 'Grey Aluminum' the body is made out of plastic, but it is very sturdy, much better quality than HP Pavilions as an example.

The two cell battery can be a bit a of an issue to some, but I have gotten 2+ hours on it so far, even though I am not on battery power a lot.

The only downside I've had with it so far is that Suspend/Resume [on Fedora] is still a bit buggy, it works sometimes, but sometimes it failts to suspend... I have a hunch it may be related to the gigabit ethernet extra kernel module, but haven't fully tested yet.

Anyway... I much rather spend $325 or so on this machine than on a tablet, much more useful. There are ways to watch Netflix on Fedora [google for it], and it works OK.

Pretty happy with the purchase.

Everything worked right out of the box. Came with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and after initial user account creation it downloaded some 350+ updates and legacy driver for the wireless card and things were much smoother. I have a Ubuntu machine running my HTPC so I am familiar with the OS. The screen is perfect for web browsing, email and word processing and presentation. Spreadsheet work can be a pain die to 11inch screen. Small package, solid feel, no flex, the hinges are sturdy and have no play. Overall real good construction. Was not expecting a stellar screen at this price but even in lowest brightness setting it is not a problem to work indoors.

Took off one star for photoshopped product pictures posted everywhere. All product pictures are taken from a high angle that hides the thickness and makes it look slimmer than it really is. I am not complaining that it is thick but simply stating that the images are a deliberate attempt to make it look slimmer.

I am getting battery life of 3-3.5hrs at lowest brightness setting with web browsing and no flash video playback. This could be a Ubuntu issue as Ubuntu battery optimization is not as good as windows or Mac. Will have to load WinXP or Win7 to test that. However you will need a $10-15 external DVD drive to load any other OS, unless you are good in doing it off a USB drive.

Overall I am happy with what i got at the price I paid.

Update: April 14th 2013

The wireless connection was not reliable and it would just loose connection without reason. So I upgraded the OS to Ubuntu 12.10 from within 12.04. Wireless problem got fixed and battery life looks like it improved a tad to 4-4.5hrs. Also installed a power management software.
