Sony VAIO T Series SVT13127CXS 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

Sony VAIO T Series SVT13127CXS 13.3-Inch UltrabookVery nice-looking ultrabook with some decent power.

Positives:

for people who want something similar to the looks of MacBook Air 13"

for people who need more storage space than the typical SSD provides (32 GB SSD+500 HD)

fast 8GB RAM

nice screen but with somewhat restrictive view angles

for people who don't need a touchscreen (model w/Touchscreen is some $300+ more expensive)

solid construction, well-made, good materials, good feel in your hands

solid, no flex keyboard

battery is about average to better than average

battery is replaceable (instructions come in the package on how to replace battery) which is great

ports are spaced enough

Negatives:

Windows 8 -this is either a seriously misunderstood OS or it's simply completely unintuitive. Hard to get to the actual work from all the distracting tiles on the Start screen. People who are more into creating/working with their computers rather than consuming content usually turn Win 8 into a Win 7-look-alike with Start button and bypass the Win 8 Start screen.

all necessary ports are there but an additional USB port would be great.

Overall, a solid and quality product from Sony.

This product came out defective, on the fifteenth day turned off the computer for no reason, they said it was the hard drive, examined and corrected something making a scandisk, but now definitely hurt, wanted to know if any warranty applies as the disc damage hard

Love my new computer. It came in a timely manner with instructions to set it up. Windows 8 kind of sucks, but once you figure it out, it's ok. The machine itself is wonderful. I can't tell by looking at it that it's refurbished or a factory return or whatever. I'm just happy that I found it at a reasonable price.

This item was purchased for my daughter, who was under the impression that it was the Touch-screen model, and was disappointed that it was not. That said, she is overall happy with this machine, which is a considerable improvement on her old notepad. Many thanks.

ASUS G75VX 17.3" Core i7 750GB HDD Laptop

ASUS G75VX 17.3' Core i7 750GB HDD LaptopThe laptop is a great laptop for whoever is looking for a freaking powerhouse of a computer. The way I have had to describe it to most of the people that have asked me about it: "A desktop in a laptops case".

Here are some specs of video games I play on high to ultra high graphics:

Far Cry 3: 45-60 FPS

Minecraft with 64x Textures: 120-150 FPS

Bioshock Infinite: 45-60 FPS

ArmA 3: 50-60 FPS

DayZ: 30-70 FPS (depending on server)

Crysis 2&3: 45-70 FPS

The problem most people have with the computer.. Is that it comes with windows 8. To be completely honest i didn't think i'd like change either BUT, It was actually a great change for me. It's not to different from 7 just a little more stylish and "custom" you can say.

The packaging it comes in its very nice and it explains the computer well.

Battery life with H-Performance and full brightness on everything About 3-5 hours

Battery life with Power Saving mode and half brightness with no backlight on the keyboard 4-7 hours

I think this is a great computer for the price you can get it on amazon. Other retail markets will sell this for 1800-2000. Amazon for 1300 is awesome!

I haven't gotten to try the Blu-Ray DVD player on it but i am sure it's pretty cool.

I am so, happy I bought this computer. It is like having both a laptop and and desktop. It is so, powerful. I would buy another Asus Gaming laptop for sure.

this is my first laptop (always had pc) and i had researched for 2 years before settleing on this one. it arrived on time and in perfect cond. it runs wonderfully and looks amazeing. the only issue i had is that after i would download a program (video game and antivirus of my choice) it shut down restarted and updated. i got an error saying something bout my driver proxy or something.... well after the second restart i updated my drivers and no problems since. the driver update really was the first thing i should of done i was just do excited to play wow on ultra that i got ahead of myself :) it stays cool and sounds/plays smooth and it comes with a 1 year warrenty it came down to this LT or one from alienware. and though the AW had more pretty thing and a slightly faster processor..it was 400 more dollars and this LT has more memory, more ram a blue ray player AND A WAY BETTER vid card for 400 less i am so glad i choose the asus. and when i had questions the person/company who had it for sell answered my questions promptly and completely-unlike AW who disconnected twice and the operator didnt seem to know much about the product they were trying to sell. i am over all very very very happy with my purchase

Want ASUS G75VX 17.3" Core i7 750GB HDD Laptop Discount?

This laptop is fantastic -it's only drawback? Win8. While the operating system doesn't totally stink, it's a lot more frustrating to do the computer things I bought a laptop for -otherwise, I'd have bought a tablet.

The computer itself is great! It is very fast (my framerates on WOW are just as good with the battery as they are with the power supply plugged in!) and actually slightly smaller than the 17" G73 I bought this one to replace -and IT EVEN HAS A BATTERY LIFE! My G73 had an hour and 15 minutes max for email, internet, word processing, etc. and 45 mins for gaming -I've gotten double that on the G75.

The display is gorgeous and even visible (though washed out) with some direct sunlight shining on it.

The price is good, plus you get a 1 year accidental damage warranty from ASUS included in the price!

I totally recommend this laptop -just plan on a few days of Win8 training and possible 3rd-party fixes to get it to work like win7 (and to get some of your programs to run).

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 1952-AP2 15-Inch Notebook - Black

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 1952-AP2 15-Inch Notebook - BlackI choose the ThinkPad due to my using several of them at work in a state government job. This unit arrived ready to work, I downloaded the programs I needed and was off and running without a hitch. The price was about 25% of what I would pay for a new unit and it had Windows XP instead of the dreaded Windows 7. So far so good.

Looking forward to a model of a computer I had used in the past and loved. I was pleased that this was coming directly from Amazon. The condition was marked new which I found odd since this was refurbished. However, there was a gaping hole in the back where the battery was supposed to be and no battery to be found in the packaging. Couldn't call so I am returning it and may not try again with a refurbished model.

Buy Lenovo ThinkPad T60 1952-AP2 15-Inch Notebook - Black Now

I purhased this refurbished laptop because I did not want a Dell. However, when I got this laptop the battery was dead for about two days. Afterwards,I finally got the battery to work but it kept shutting down randomly and the air blowing out of the cooling fan smelled. About two weeks later the screen flickered and the computer shut down. After a week and a half of this, I took it to a technician and she tested the CPU and said it was going bad. I am now replacing this laptop with a current model. My advice is do not purchase refurbished laptops because it is possible that it could be damaged inside!

PS (left shift key defective, volume button defective,no mouse pad)

Want Lenovo ThinkPad T60 1952-AP2 15-Inch Notebook - Black Discount?

I bought this laptop for my Mom as a Christmas present. The first laptop I got had a problem with the display and was distorted on the right side. I sent it back and 2 1/2 weeks later I got a replacement that was all banged up. It still had a display issue and a battery that did not even fit properly. I'm probably going to return it AGAIN.

HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us 17.3" Notebook (Intel Core i7-2670QM, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HD)

HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us 17.3' NotebookI bought this laptop from Staples on Black Friday when they had it for $599, which I thought was a steal. I am very happy with the purchase.

The 17.3" screen is great and was a must-have for me. I have had a 17" laptop for a while and I wasn't going back! Obviously this makes it not quite as portable, but this sits at home most of the time and goes on trips with me. A 17" laptop is also a bit more difficult to find a carrying case for.

The fingerprint scanner was easy to set up and works very well every time I use it.

Having a blu-ray drive as well as HDMI is fantastic, as I can use this as a blu-ray player at home.

The speakers aren't quite as loud as I hoped, but they're certainly not quiet. I've just heard a lot of talk about Beats Audio and was hoping for a little more volume. It's very clear at full volume with 0 static sound, so that's a plus.

The keyboard is smooth and easy to type on and the mouse works well as expected. One thing I'm not impressed with multitouch. I have used a Mac multitouch mouse and they work very smoothly. This "multitouch" mouse is very spotty to the point of being almost useless. Do not consider the multitouch mouse a buying point it rarely works properly. Even when it does work, the scrolling is entirely too fast to be useful.

The overall design is very nice in my opinion. I've read a few places where people complain of the silver rim being cheap looking, and while it's not solid and unbreakable I think it looks good and won't be easy to break unless you drop the laptop or are very rough on it.

EDIT 9/9/2012: After some months of use, I was proven wrong. The plastic around the speakers on the front of the laptop do break. It's just a thin piece of plastic that broke off on both sides. Still, I'm overall happy with the computer and would buy it again.

The HD webcam quality is OK. I don't think I'd called it HD but probably a step under HD.

The RAM is very easy to upgrade and the model I got had 1 4GB DDR3 stick with 1 empty slot a cheaper upgrade than if it had 2 x 2GB sticks. There is a spot for a secondary hard drive, but I was disappointed to see that it did not include a cable to connect the 2nd hard drive to the laptop. This will have to be purchased separately, and I was able to find it online for $32 shipped.

This laptop runs very cool. Obviously I always take care not to impede airflow from the fan (don't put it on a soft blanket, bed, carpet, etc), but this is probably the coolest running laptop I've ever owned.

The 9-cell battery has excellent life, but does stick out the bottom of the laptop about the only styling cue of this laptop that I don't like. It is somewhat functional, though allowing for more airflow to cool the laptop.

Overall, a great buy and I'm very happy with the purchase. It's a speedy, sharp-looking laptop which I suspect will give me years of computing.

Like a previous reviewer, I also purchased this from Staples at a post Black Friday price of $580 after instant and other "Easy" rebates. I have owned this for about 3 weeks now and I just love it.

Coming from a 15.4" laptop I have to get used to the larger keyboard layout, but the feel of the keyboard is quiet and responsive. I have not used this for gaming, and considering it has the "basic" Intel HD chip I am not expecting much from it but for all other uses so far I have had no issues.

FAST i7 Quad-core with hyperthreading, makes the OS think it is using 8 cores.

4 GB of Ram which is perfect for most people and HP was nice enough to use 1 4GB chip leaving upgrade space for another chip.

Video looks great, the screen is crisp and clear, and having Blu-ray with HDMI out is a huge bonus.

Coming from a Lenovo laptop with the crappiest sound I had ever heard on a laptop, this thing is friggin LOUD! You do have to initialize the Beats audio through the Beats Configuration and turn on the mini sub-woofer, but once you do it goes from sounding like a netbook to a something much larger than it is.

The Multi-touch touchpad is a nice feature, but I rarely even remember to utilize it. One annoying aspect of the touchpad is supposedly a "feature". The top left of the touchpad contains a small square that when long-pressed turns off the touchpad. Before I realized this "feature" existed I accidentally turned off the touchpad and had to recall keyboard shortcuts to get to the internet to google this problem which just entailed re-long-pressing that spot. Why one would need to turn off the touchpad I do not know.

While my last laptop always ran hot, even with notebook hardware control installed to under-clock the damn thing just so it would run cooler. This laptop seemingly never gets hot.

Battery Life HP claims 5.25 hours. I call BS.. This thing lasts MUCH longer under general use. Internet, wifi, normal brightness, audio, spreadsheets, etc. No complaints whatsoever. The battery also acts as a mini stand which props the back of the laptop for a slightly better typing angle. The battery also has it's own push-button 4-light indicator of battery life so you can tell how much you have left without turning on the machine.

It is heavier than I am used to but I expected that coming from a smaller laptop.

Once I got used to it, the fingerprint reader works very well.

4 USB ports (2) USB 2 ports and (2) USB 3 ports.

Using oovoo, the webcam allowed for options up to HD video, but I could not test since the other party couldn't support anything greater than SD from my end. The video was acceptable (for a webcam) and the audio was good.

I intended to get a laptop with a better video card such as a mobile Radeon, but at the price I couldn't pass this up , and I am very glad I did not pass this up.

I was able to compare this to a 17" dv6 laptop which had an i5 Processor with Radeon graphics and this dv7 runs much smoother. Very pleased with this purchase.

this laptop is one od the best PC's that I have ever used. The sleek degign does not allow for overheating. Overall this computer is very fast and responsive. The only bad thing I have to say is the view angles. If you are not looking at the screen at the right angle the top corners seem dark but other than that this is a suberb laptop for the money!

This is one of the best laptops I've ever owned. The battery life is awesome. I get a solid 8 hours of constant use, which is amazing for a 17" laptop with an i7 processor. I don't know how HP did it, but the power consumption is very low. I have power monitor and the laptop only draws about 40 watts of power, compared to about 100 watts on my 6 year old HP zv5000 15" laptop. The fact that you can add a second internal SATA drive is also a big plus because you can mix and match standard drives with SSD drives, and/or simplify dual booting into different operating systems. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't have onboard bluetooth, but I bought one of the mini USB bluetooth adapters and it works just fine.

I'd highly recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking for a 17" format.

Purchased this laptop during the holidays. It is running great. Upgraded the ram from 4GB to 8GB for less than $40. The Windows Experience Index went up from 4.8 to 6.8 with the additional ram. We let the kids play the internet and watch movies on battery power and the computer lasted over 9 hours. The 9-cell battery is a must for these higher power processors. The security HP SimplePass, fingerprint scanner, is a very cool program.

The only negative is the bright, BRIGHT!, HP logo on the top cover of the laptop. There is no function to disable the light. Thus in class watching a video clip the light acts like a flash light to annoy all the people around. The only solution to disable this light seems to be a hardware fix where you disassemble the screen and physically unplug the light. Unfortunately, this is not something you want to do unless you are willing to void the warranty.

But with this being the only negative we found this to be a great laptop.

ASUS X53E-SB31-RD 15.6" LAPTOP COMPUTER, Core i3-2310M 2.1GHz, 500GB HDD, 4GB MEMORY, WEBCAM, WINDO

ASUS X53E-SB31-RD 15.6' LAPTOP COMPUTER, Core i3-2310M 2.1GHz, 500GB HDD, 4GB MEMORY, WEBCAM, WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64 BITI had been looking for a laptop with windows 7, and unfortunately all available laptops in market are now windows 8, which in my experience is a slow operating system and I personally do not like the way it operates. Found this brand new ASUS laptop online with windows 7 and intel i3 processor which works great so far. Its very fast with LED display. Battery last me at least 4 HOURS (actively working on it) which I am very happy about. The only minor issue I have with this design is that you have to press function key and then press another volume key in order to increase or decrease the speaker sound. I recommend ASUS to add a simply volume control button on the laptop (for example like HP laptop) and it will be very convenience for the user; however this does not change my rating for this laptop. Overall I highly recommend this product if you can find one with windows 7. Thank you...........

Dell Inspiron i15N-3910BK 15-Inch Laptop

Dell Inspiron i15N-3910BK 15-Inch LaptopThis is my husband's account, so though his name is attached to it, he isn't writing this. Amazon is advertizing the well-reviewed and rated 3910 even though they KNOW (and apparently have known for some time) that Dell doesn't make it anymore and is giving them 3520s in 3910 boxes. The 3520s are among the very WORST rated/reviewed laptops. DO NOT BUY THIS unless you want an inferior product, or want to be cajoled by Amazon into getting a replacement, only to get the SAME incorrect machine. There are customers who have received the 3520 3 or 4 times while trying to get a 3910; they clearly were never told that there simply ARE NO 3910s. The customer rep is trained to point out that the ad for the 3910 says that the 3920 is the genericc for this kind of Inspiron, as if the fault is potentially the consumers for not reading closely enough. As I pointed out, this does NOT say, so expect to receive the 3520; it could mean that I should feel free to buy replacement parts that are 3520. DO NOT BUY THIS. They promised on my last go-round with them to TAKE THIS DESCRIPTION DOWN, since it is fraudulent. Let's see how that goes...

Here's my two minor gripes:

The system window says 2.5 GHz not 2.6 GHz (as of 2/9/13).

All the way across the top of the screen the pixels are dimmer near the edge of the screen. They dim within several millimeters of the edge. It's only across the top. The sides and bottom the pixels are bright all the way to the edge. Not a huge deal a little annoying. Some might not even notice and it may only be a quirk with the one I received.

The Window Experience Index has this processor at 7.1. The weak link is the graphic which is only 5.4. All the other scores are in between. The base score for your Windows Experience is based on the lowest score. So on a Windows scale of 1.0 to 9.9 this is a 5.4 computer and is the reason for my 4 star rating.

This is my second Dell laptop. So I do like them. My other one is only 7 month old and working just fine. This one has an HD picture and an HDMI port and it is a noticeably better picture just surfing the net. Dells run stable. They are well made. I like that all the edges are rounded so it's comfortable in my lap. I like the keyboard and the materials, fit and finish.

Under the keyboard is a 4 gig and a 2 gig ram chip. The keyboard pops out and I replaced the 2 gig chip with a second 4 gig chip. You can see how the keyboard pops out on you tube. Be careful with the ribbon cable connected to the computer and keyboard. Once the keyboard is out you can't move it too far from the computer.

I bought this from Amazon with ZERO bloatware, cr@pware, trailware and any other ware you don't want. Not true with the Dell I bought at best buy. Great job on that Amazon!!

Ordered on a Friday. UPS dropped it off in perfect condition the next day on a Saturday.

Once I received my product I realized that it has different specs as prompted on amazon product description. Then I realized that I got a DELL 3520 instead of a DELL 3910 as I ordered. The DELL 3520 has the same processor and physical memory than DELL 3910 but it doesn't have either a USB 3.0 port nor keyboard backlight (there must be others no adverted differences). I strongly recommend not to buy this item until Amazon fix this problem.

I have yet to receive the computer as decribed above (3910). Instead what I have been receiving is model (3520) in a 3910 box. This has happened to 4 times since first ordering Feb. 9th. Each time I was told that the problem had been corrected. Finally, I was issued a refund and told to reorder because the product was back on the website which meant that the problem with packaging had been resolved. I reordered March 9th (3910) and received on March 15th a (3520) in a (3910) box, and for the 4th time on March 16th I have returned item. This is a HUGE problem with customer satisfaction. I was told I on March 16th I would be contacted later....I'm still waiting.

Sony VAIO VGN-AW230J/B 18.4-Inch Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB

Sony VAIO VGN-AW230J/B 18.4-Inch Laptop BlackI have always had very good luck with Sony equipment so I decided on a Sony notebook this time. So far after about one week I am not disappointed. This is a fast, beautiful, well-made notebook with an awesome screen. Amazon's delivery was very fast, and the product is as described. Right now I am dealing with a steep learning curve with the Windows Vista 64 bit that came with the notebook and it's compatibility issues with software and printers, but that is another story.....

Excellent and beautifully screen, I love the full keyboard and the software packages is fantastic. The start-up, customization and data transfer was easy, the start-up and support software are well design. The only minor thing I can say is the batteries are actually a haft one and last only an hour in normal setting and also there a problem with the sleep mode and the screen saver... not a big deal for me. Also to take a grate advantage of the multi-media they should add an HD TV tuner.

But after all it is fast, beautifull and I'm very happy with it.

Buy Sony VAIO VGN-AW230J/B 18.4-Inch Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB Now

The backlight on the VGN-AW230J is poorly designed, resulting in an area approximately 0.5 cm high at the bottom of the panel that is evenly and significantly brighter than the rest of the panel. This same effect can be seen to a lesser extent along the sides of the panel. The opposite effect occurs at the bottom corners of the panel, where the backlight appears pinched and at times completely black.

Sony initially told me this was a defect and sent a technician to repair the laptop. After the technician replaced the LCD panel (and broke the bezel in the process), the problem remained. Sony then requested that I send the laptop to their repair center. The repair center has since notified me that the strip of light is "normal," and that despite multiple unnecessary repairs made at their suggestion, they will not provide me a with new, unmodified laptop.

Sony has also added a vaguely worded article to their knowledgebase describing the problem as normal. While they refer to the problem as a "glow," which can in fact be normal for some backlights, this is not how the problem presents itself. ®ion=UMRE_UNITEDSTATES_2_5&sonyregion=US&searchString=lcd%20bright&product=SG_VGNAW230J_1_5&sonytemplate=1&sonymodel=VGNAW230J

I was quite surprised with Sony's response given the marketing behind this particular laptop's display and their direct support of Adobe's color profiles. If you're looking for a laptop with a clear, even, and professional display, look elsewhere.

This is my 3rd sony vaio laptop. I love almost everything about it.

The screen is very nice, bright and clear, blu-ray player, full keyboard, nice looking, speakers and etc....

It is like you have a portable desktop.

The down side is the weight, battery life and hard to find the bag but I got one from Amazon.com that is perfectly fit this laptop, it is Targus TLE400.

I have been using this laptop for about 2 weeks and haven't had any problem yet.

PROS:

This laptop is great! At first, I could not get used to the size of the screen, but that quickly grew on me. The full keyboard is absolutely a plus for me. The picture is very clear, the sound is great (not party loud though.) Recording videos and chatting through the webcam is great also. I love watching DVD's on here, downloading music, writing papers, browsing the internet, checking e-mails, etc. If you're a traveler, I would recommend purchasing the Neoprene laptop case for the AW series which was only $24.99!! I also bought the Linksys Ultra Rangeplus Wireless-N Broadband Router (the best price found on Amazon of course).

CONS:

The laptop is only 8 lbs. However, I was unaware of how heavy that actually is. Not really a downside, but it would be nicer if it were a bit lighter. The standard capacity battery that the laptop comes with has a very short life. That battery will last you just over one hour, which is not a lot of time if you're typing a paper, dl songs, or watching a movie. You can leave it plugged in, but I highly recommend purchasing the Large Capacity battery as well.

Hope this helps!!!! =)

Dell Latitude E6330

Dell Latitude E6330I got a decked out E6330 from work. It's a light and very fast computer with long battery life and I like to use it. But, I was totally shocked when I saw the price. I also personally own a 9 month old 13" macbook pro and a two year old Lenovo T400. Externally the Dell is no where near the build quality of either of those machines, not even close. The screen colors look pasty in comparison and the keyboard feels rubbery and is not very nice to the touch. When I type on the Lenovo I get a really satisfying snap to the keyboard. When I put my hands on the macbook the texture and smoothness of the track pad make it a joy to touch.

When I saw the order sheet for the Dell it talked about the Tri-Metal chassis which made me think the case would be really nice, but it's maybe just average. It also gets surprisingly hot just sitting on my desk doing nothing. The fan kicks in and out in an extreme fashion instead of just calming winding up and down. My Macbook almost never gets warm to the touch unless it is really chugging, and I almost never notice the fan. The Dells lid hinges are very stiff and if the laptop is sitting on a desk and I try to lift the lid the whole laptop lifts up and sometimes the lid gives way after it's tilted up and the the bottom part of the machine slams back down onto the desk. The first time I saw this happen I was shocked. I've handled probably a hundred macbooks at my previous job and they never did that even once!

I really don't know why so many IT departments who have to force you into windows buy from Dell instead of at least getting you a Lenovo or Asus.

Like the other reviewer, my Dell Latitude E6330 was provided by my employer to replace a five-year-old Dell laptop that was pretty sluggish. This new machine zips along, processing Photoshop or Word without hesitation. The start up and shut down are so much faster, I feel like I gain 20 minutes of working time a day. Most days I connect it to a monitor and keyboard via a docking station, so I don't deal with smaller screen size or bit clunky keyboard except on teleworking days. Even then, this PC is passable, though, I agree, the color rendering is not quite true and for real nitty gritty production I prefer my Apple.

Still for a basic workhorse this machine works fine and its processing speed is a plus. The screen holds itself up and swivels with no problem for different viewing perspectives. The battery life makes it easier to be untethered and haul the laptop to a back porch or around the house. I use it on a lap desk and have not noticed excess heat on mine.

The list price is a bit shocking and I have feeling mine was part of a group buy for a lower cost. The short and long of it is that I would not pay the sticker price for this laptop, but if you still need a laptop for work, give this one some latitude if you can get one for a more reasonable cost.

Acer LX.PY902.035 7741z-4643 Intel Pentium Dual-core 2.0ghz 3gb 250gb Dvd/rw 17.3 Windows7

Acer LX.PY902.035 7741z-4643 Intel Pentium Dual-core 2.0ghz 3gb 250gb Dvd/rw 17.3 Windows7The design and huge screen of this Acer laptop is fantastic. However, there was a major flaw in the process by which Acer installed software on this laptop model that causes it to randomly freeze--at least that is the cause that I read online at some point in researching this laptop's glitches. Sometimes a couple of weeks will go by with no mishap, other times the laptop will freeze 3 times in one day. I have wasted countless hours online looking for a solution (working with the battery removed, flashing the BIOS with an update) and nothing has worked. It's an attractive machine but if Acer can't even get software installation right to avoid its products having such a fatal flaw, then I'm afraid this is the first and only Acer product I will buy. The mousepad is also infuriatingly hard to control, worse than any laptop mousepad I've ever used. Sometimes the mouse will get stuck on the right side of the screen for a couple of minutes and no movement whatsoever will free it until it just fixes itself after a minute or two. Avoid.

This product was not new. It had some issues out of the box, which has been resolved, one of the keys has already came off and looks as if it has been glued on before. After the tech issues were resolved the computer its self is great.

Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro (with Retina display) quad-core Intel Core i7 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB flash

Apple 15.4' MacBook Pro quad-core Intel Core i7 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB flash storage, Intel HD Graphics 4000, Mac OS X LionThis is my first mac. I love it.

o SSD drive for quick boot. Its so fast its amazing.

o retina display is the best screen I have ever had.

o Lots of memory and cpu power. It runs so fast, its worth the price.

o Size is wonderful. Its light and thin.

Bottom line, its pricey but worth it. I would recommend it to someone who wants to try apple laptops.

I was a PC for all my life! Since the 80s and last year I bought a small used MacBook. It wasn't fast but it worked. This year I got a new camera and the old MacBook was chocking on the files so I went all out and got this. OMG! Incredibly fast!!! It boots up in 11 seconds and most of the time will shut down in 3 seconds. I click to start a program and its almost instant. Everything I do with it is so fast. It doesn't crash (EVER) and I use it for everything. The software for the Mac seems a lot cheaper than it was for the PC also. One last thing; when I first started it, it noticed I had had a network with my old Mac on it. It ask if I wanted to copy the settings from my old Mac or from a Time Machine Backup. I choose the Time Machine back up and after about thirty minutes every program with every registration code and password was copied to my new computer. This would take me days with my PC to reload all my software and find the codes etc... I'm a Mac now and I'm not looking back! Spend the extra money and get this. You will not regret it.

I am using my time to do a review, because my expectations were exceeded, meaning someone, somewhere, deserves positive feedback for that. Karma, what ever..... Thank You Apple, Thank You Amazon.

Bone-fides:

I've owned and used representative Macs of every generation from the beginning, and Apple IIe's, II GSs etc before that. The family has always had several Macs around the house any given time plus a couple off at college. I'm somewhat of an digital intelligence / awareness augmentation enthusiast and I publish virtual tourism products that must be widely compatible, so I own, like and use PC's alongside Macs, daily. Don't care!

Yes I own one: Because I was really good this year, I bought myself a 15" Retina Display, 16 gig, 512 ssd for Christmas from Amazon, and received the stellar "prime" service I am accustomed to.

Opinion:

I love the machine. The build quality, performance and display are remarkable. It replaced a much, much beloved 17" MacBookPro lost in a fire, so my satisfaction bar was set pretty high. I am delighted with the 15". If/when there is a 17" Retina Display model, I'll get one, but for me, now, the 15" Retina is it, an extreme value, considering the price point has not really changed on the highest end MacBookPros in a long time. I think I paid more for the loaded 17" a couple of years ago. This model is satisfying me in the same ways. Per normal with replacement Macs, it is now the fastest computer I own, besting the MacPro I'm using to write this and the display really is stunning.

The never ending, Apple led, Bus, Port and interface changes don't bother me, I'm numb. Heck, I still have SSCI stuff somewhere. For me, managing my local peripheral architecture changes and transitions is way better than being stuck with with the slow, buggy, large old stuff. What does kinda disappoint me is the locked down, non-upgradable nature of the beast. I used to delight in getting the fastest processor, but otherwise baseline versions of my Macs or PCs, and upgrading them. A nit really, because mine is outrageously equipped for a comparative song, and my needs are not likely to outgrow its capabilities any time soon. Wants, are another matter, but even there, the 15" Retina MacbookPro is is confirmed as my first choice amongst laptops that I might use to augment me.

Bottom line: Extreme value for my money, in that I got phenomenal computing power and advanced display technology packaged as a fine work of industrial art.

Update 1/9/13: I have the Samsung built display and it remains impressive. I'd buy this jewel again.

Lenovo S405 14.0-Inch Laptop (Silver Grey)

Lenovo S405 14.0-Inch LaptopPlease let me add another perspective if I may. I set up a dual boot with W8 and Ubuntu 12.10, and this was my experience:

PRO: Keyboard is excellent for typing relative to other laptops.

Build quality is good, not dazzling.

It has horsepower. The price/performance ratio is superb.

It's quiet and light.

W8 is quick and responsive, 'a nice fit with the laptop.

CON: Battery life is under three hours.

********UBUNTU Installation:********

1. Beginner level One can easily replace W8 with Ubuntu doing a USB install. Everything except the screen brightness control works right out of the box.

2. Intermediate level You can do a standard dual boot install but will have to change back and forth between W8 and Ubuntu each time by going to the BIOS and selecting the respective boot loaders. Google to find how to add a line that will let you adjust the brightness.

3. Advanced level To completely solve the brightness issue, upgrade to the Linux 3.7 kernel. (It takes 5 minutes, 'simple instructions using a script. Google it for instructions.) You can also get the dual boot to work well by working with grub a little.

Bottom line: this is a relatively powerful product at a very good price. W8 and Ubuntu both work well on it. Don't expect an ultrabook and do expect to play with it a little to set it up like you want.

'Enjoy.

Structural build quality: Poor. The design of the system is quite portable; its as thin as most other ultrabooks, and feels like the perfect size for a 14" laptop. However, it lacks the structural integrity of more expensive ultrabooks. The entire body is very poor quality plastic, not comparable to even the lowest-end Thinkpads like the x120. The hinges scare me quite a bit; it has a good opening and closing action, but they just don't feel secure.

IO: Good. The keyboard is very nice, easily the best feature of the product. Full size and great key placement (I compare this to the x120, which switches the position of the CTRL and FN keys; not good). One minor key on mine tends to stick down every once in a while. The mousepad is okay. Its very spacious, but lacks distinct physical buttons, instead opting for the full pad clicking action found on other models. The selection of ports is great; the addition of an ethernet port is a very welcome addition considering how few ultrabooks have one these days. The machine also has a very small physical button on the left of the machine which will cause it to boot straight into the BIOS/boot menu; a *very* cool feature for those who tinker a lot.

Screen: Average. The resolution is mediocre, at 720p. Brightness is not overly impressive. The brightness keys have the capability of turning the screen off, like MacBooks, a feature I quite like. Every once in a while my screen will "flash". I have not been able to conclude if its a hardware problem or a problem with Ubuntu, but it is so rare that I haven't had the opportunity to see it but out of the corner of my eye.

Battery: Ten lightyears beyond abysmal. In Windows 8, I was averaging around 2 hours. When I installed Ubuntu, that number dropped to 1 hour 10 minutes average. This is on medium brightness, and very low load levels. I could squeeze out another 20 minutes if I disable WiFi. The battery is exposed and user replaceable; another welcome feature compared to other ultrabooks. However, I can't find *anyone* that sells a replacement, let alone a unit with upgraded capacity. Not even Lenovo; the S405 is not even listed on their available model list, with the closest model being the incompatible S300.

Performance: Average. Again, for the price, I was pleasantly surprised. Day-to-day usage, such as internet browsing, is perfectly fast. I was capable of loading World of Warcraft on the machine, and managed to log between 20-35 FPS on low/medium settings. Boot time is acceptable on both Windows 8 and Ubuntu. For those who care: The Ubuntu install process was very painless, with no EFI or driver problems to report.

Overall: Do not buy. I was able to obtain this machine during a sale for much less than what it is currently priced. However, even at that lower price, I cannot recommend this machine. I have not experienced any of the unique issues which plague some other users on Amazon, so my experience and conclusion was formed with a fully operational unit. Even then, I would be scared to recommend it even at half its current price. Purchase with caution.

This is by no means a fancy Apple product or similar. It's a very basic (for 2013) laptop that will serve the average laptop user's needs perfectly.

It's lightweight, the sound system is excellent (note there appear to be speakers underneath laptop. Can still hear very well), and the design is very sleek and attractive. In fact it looks so much like my roommates MacBook that I occasionally confuse the two, until I pick hers up and realize it's so much heavier.

I primarily use my computers for basic Internet stuff, as well as watching Netflix, Hulu, etc. The screen resolution (that's the right word, right?) is perfectly adequate and a darn sight better than my last laptop (4 years old now). I am sure you could get something better on a pricier computer, but everything is still clear, crisp, and very watchable. There's very little issue with images becoming too dark when you tilt the screen slightly, which is nice because you don't constantly have to adjust either your angle or the laptop's.

The ergonomic keyboard actually does help with my carpal tunnel in that I don't notice an increase in pain level after hours of use. The Intelligent Touchpad is decent. I know it has to walk the line on touch sensitivity, so I can't fault it too much for not always responding when I "tap" to get it to click on a link etc.

The battery life is fine. I've not tested it to full potential yet but I've gone a good 3+ hours watching Netflix/Hulu on it without it needing to be charged. It does, however, eat up battery if you just close it and leave it unplugged. You have to put it on Sleep if you don't want to wake up the next morning and have less than an hour of battery left.

Windows 8 took a bit of getting used to and frankly I'm still not convinced I like it. Not the laptop's fault.

I wouldn't recommend this laptop for anything outside of the basic stuff. If you need a laptop to play games, to install a lot of programs, and whatever else people do on computers these days (I'm far too young to sound this old), then move on up the line and spend the money to get what you need.

I got this on sale when I just really needed to replace my old (and nearly dead) Dell. I am happy with it. It does what I need it to do, while also being light, attractive, and easy to transport.

Directly out of the shipping box I received the following message "Unable to install windows, please restart your installation. . .," but this was easier said than done, due to no onboard DVD drive, much less a Windows installation disk or product key. To Lenovo's credit, however, I was able to quickly reach a live technician via their support number, who steered me to a "hard reset" button just beside the power button but on the side of the case. This commenced a relatively problem free Windows 8 installation. This was the 3rd one I had done on three different laptops. It apparently restored from files stored (along with drivers, digital manual, etc) under a hard drive partition marked "Lenovo." The next problem was inability to link to WiFi due to an IP configuration error. Lenovo tech support did not do so well this time, promising me a call back Christmas Eve morning, which has not been received roughly 36 hours later. Luckily, however, the next WiFi site I tried (with an ATT U-verse rather than a cable modem) connected just fine. The machine worked well, once I figured out how to disable the silly Windows 8 "Tile" startup screen and get back to a classic style windows desktop. The only remaining problem as I am writing this is that the onboard webcam is not being recognized, no luck in re=installing the drivers. The machine gives an error message regarding an "unrecognized USB device, which I am guessing is the camera. More to follow as this situation unfolds. Despite all this, I actually like the machine, since it is both light but big enough to have a 14 inch screen and boots very quickly.

UPDATE: Factory repair replaced the motherboard and it worked great, but this was way more work than a brand new machine out of the box should require. I am still also curious whether or not this is a quad core chip, as advertised.

Pros: Great Price ($329!), Solid Construction / No Flex Keyboard, Handy OneKey Lenovo Rescue System, Surprisingly Peppy A6/HD 7500g Processors, .83in Thick & Looks Great.

Cons: No VGA port (HDMI), Battery Life.

Summary:

I bought this laptop primarily for running accounting and desk top publishing software....to work on the go and to start getting used to Windows 8.

Although I was already familiar with this AMD chip series, I was surprised at how well the peppy A6 handled the programs I through at it. I even went as far to install MW3 on it just to see how it would handle games. MW3 looks and plays great without hick-ups or stuttering. I didn't buy it for gaming but it's nice to know it can handle a graphic intense game like MW3 if you want it to.

It doesn't have an optical drive but at this weight and thickness, you wouldn't expect it to. And although you can't call it an Ultrabook since it's powered by AMD and running an old school hard drive, it looks and in many cases performs better than many Ultrabooks.

Many users have complained about the battery life and certainly, it's not very good. But keep in mind Windows 8 is a pretty big power draw since it's constantly pulling data to keep your Start screen populated. Toss it in airplane mode and adjust the screen brightness and you'll see a noticeable increase in battery life. Or go even further and slow down the processor when you don't need it at full performance.

My only real complaint is that it's missing a VGA port so I'll need to pick up an HDMI to VGA converter to use any of the monitors I currently have.

Bottom Line: At around $329 it'll make most people very happy.

Samsung SF310-S01 13.3" Notebook (2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor 480M, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Driv

Samsung SF310-S01 13.3' Notebook GrayThis is no over-achieving laptop. It's good, but not great. Biggest downfall is the screen, which has a very restricted viewing angle. If you're anything but dead-straight, it's not sharp.

Battery performance is about 2 hours on a full charge, even after upgrading to SSD drive.

Touchpad is very finicky, forced to use a mouse.

The CD drive seems to open by itself if you're holding the laptop from the side and your hand presses against it (without touching the eject button).

It's a little heavy. Sound from the speakers is low.

I've never used a Samsung laptop but had no preconceived notions about the Samsung. I've used IBM/Lenovos, Dells, Sonys, Acers, Toshibas, Gateways you name it and used most of the non-Apple laptops over the last 20 years in IT. I'm not going into which one I like best, but I can say definitively that this Samsung has the worst track pad & keyboard that I've ever used. As much as I tried, I've had to disable the track pad in order to use the keyboard and carry a wireless mouse with me at all times WTF! What's the point of having a laptop if I can't use the track pad/keyboard at the same time on the road? I've seen other Samsungs which don't have as much of an issue with the track pad, but almost all users of Samsungs have some complaint about the track pad, keyboard or both. The internal specs are decent with a i5 i5-480M / 2.66 GHz CPU, 4GB RAM (expandable to 8GB), but a below average Hard Drive (320 GB) and poor-to-mid battery life make this a laptop I would not recommend to others. In a crowded and intensely competitive mid-range laptop space, I can't see how the Samsung line will survive if it can't even master the most basic of laptop features (keyboard/track pad).

I agree with the other reviewer, it is difficult to type on this computer. But there are OH SO MANY REASONS NOT TO BUY THIS COMPUTER. WASTE OF MONEY! NIGHTMARE! Yes, all type disappears for no reason ALL THE TIME. Also, however, battery life: they told me 7 hours. Well, not really, but anyway, for however long (I think 5 at best) -when it gets down to the last 7%, a dialog box starts FLASHING ON YOUR SCREEN "BATTERY LOW 7%" -you plug the cord in, but THE FLASHING DOESNT STOP IT JUST KEEPS FLASHING AND YOU CANT DO ANYTHING TILL IT CHARGES. PLUS, the windows are stored down on your toolbar, but loads of times you just can't pull them up -it's a tease, they start to come up, but disappear. The cursor skips, the mousepad is jumpy, you could kill yourself trying to write a paragraph. just in this review I lost the type twice (i have control z at the ready all the time). IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD A BETTER COMPUTER, USE A TYPEWRITER.

Asus X73EXR2 / X73E-XR2 / X73E-XR2 17.3, Intel Core i3-2310M, 4GB RAM, 640GB Hard Drive, Windows 7We purchased this laptop less than a month ago. We transfered all of our files from our Vista laptop with a Belkin cable--flawlessly BTW. This machine is amazingly fast and runs SUPER COOL. I had it on my lap for two hours last night and it didn't even feel warm. It boots quickly and is big and solidly built. Beautiful bright screen and a great keyboard and mouse pad. Battery life is really good too. I did think I was getting a backlit keyboard but if it can light up, I haven't figured out how to do it.

I don't really write reviews of my purchases but I had to write this one. This is honestly the best laptop I've purchased and I've owned two Dell's and an HP. So far so good. If it starts to suck, I'll write an update.

***UPDATE***

About two months after purchasing the laptop, some of the keys became inoperable. I called ASUS Tech Support and they had me try to reinstall the driver but that didn't work. They ended up sending us a pre-paid box and we sent it back to them for repair. Since then, we've had no problems. Aside from the keyboard issue I'm very happy with it. It's still running super cool.
