ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB52 13.3-Inch Ultrabook

ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB52 13.3-Inch UltrabookVery pleased with the design (probably an intellectual property violation of Apple's Macbook Air design!). Performance with 256GB SSD is blazing. The screen is amazingly bright and sharp. I compared it to my business partner's MacBook Air, and the Asus is MUCH brighter. Great for my aging eyes! The speaker sound is a bit low on volume. The most significant issue I have is the sensitivity of the touch pad. I noted that others identified this issue with other UX31s. I have never experienced this with any previous notebook computer. If you so much as touch in the slightest way the large touchpad while typing, large swathes of text will be highlighted and, upon the next key stroke, erased. I have used my undo key to correct this more times than I like to remember. Hopefully, there is a software update that corrects the problem. Other than this, I am pleased. Best notebook I have ever had, even with the concerns I expressed.

Pros:

Almost everything, this is by far the best laptop I have yet to encounter. Its resolution and blazing speed (with the i7 Ivybridge processor and Solid State Hard Drive) excede any needs I have (word processing, watching videos, and Adobe Photoshop CS6). It's battery life is fairly good for an Ultrabook, especially with the excellent (and even) screen brightness. The USB 3.0 Ports are great to have, though on rare occasions more than two would be preferred.

Cons:

My only minor criticisms are its non-upgradable RAM and some keyboard issues.

In regards to its 4GB of RAM, 4GB is decent but isn't as much as I would prefer these days(though with its size, up-gradable components might just not be feasible).

Unfortunately, the first laptop I received had a malfunctioning On/Off button (which is part of the keyboard), that stopped working after about a week. The computer was promptly exchanged though, and this computer has not had that particular issue. Though, it should be noted that on occasion certain keys stop working (especially the backspace key) and I find lifting the computer, and sometimes lightly shaking it seems to help. This suggests to me that the keyboard attachment to the logic board occasionally comes slightly unseated. Based on a past Asus laptop I've owned, and these two additional Asus computers having this issue, it appears to me that Asus computers might be prone to such keyboard issues, but the pros far outweigh this minor inconvenience, to me. Further, I'm sure I could exchange it for a third computer, but it isn't worth the hassle.

UPDATE: The keyboard issue has gotten frustrating enough that I'm going to try sending it in again... apparently this is a common problem:

AS5742Z-4646 - DDR3 Sdram - Serial Ata - 15.6 Inch - Tft Active Matrix

AS5742Z-4646 - DDR3 Sdram - Serial Ata - 15.6 Inch - Tft Active MatrixWecam, 15.6" screen, intel P6200 duo core, 4G Ram and 320 HD... great laptop! I use it for basic stuff: email, internetj/research, download music and that is pretty much it. I don't game at all. This is my first laptop and you need to understand that my old computer (6 years old) was a Pentium 4, 80G HD, 512 Ram. I've had this ACER for a month now and I am more than pleased with its performance. Speed is great. Screen is great. Keyboard is great (I never have to worry about my wrists accidently hitting the house pad), mouse pad is great. I haven't tried the webcam yet. Speakers are weak but I don't use my computer to listen to music. I bought this laptop for $379.00 with free shipping in early February. Too cheap. I wonder how much the workers in Asia are being paid to make them??? :(

-D

This is my second Acer Laptop, my previous laptop was good but this one is great. I just use my laptop when I am traveling, it has WiFi, keyboard has a very good ease of use and the 15 in screen is wide enough that I can watch movies and work without any eye strain, battery life is good at least 3.5 hours. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good inexpensive system.

HP - ENVY 15.6" Laptop - 6GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Natural Silver

HP - ENVY 15.6' Laptop - 6GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Natural SilverI am not a gamer or anything, but this can hold it's own-just not the carzy latest games like Far Cry or Max Payne 3..but not many laptops in the price range do. I paid $600..I do play some 3d games, and the games I want to play work. If you go to Futuremark's website, and put in the spec for this computer, you shall see that this play 100% of the games at the MINIMUM settings at 71% at MAXIMUM settitngs! Not bad for $600! Plus, the backligh keyboard is nice and the fingerprint reader is handy for more security. It certainly is much quieter than my 7 year old Gateway which just didn't turn on. I cocluded it was a motherboard or power supply issue-and it was a hassle to get someone to troubleshoot. I figured I'd just buy a laptop-it's a great machine! Annd the once reviewer who gaave this 1 star based on lack of "restore" disks..well, that just being ignorant! Very few..except maybe old skoll Dells game w/ the system CDs. To base a review on that alone is LUDICRIOUS!!

A few things to get off my chest first.

1. Restore discs don't ship with computers any more...they just don't. It's not hard to make the restore discs yourself. DO IT IMMEDIATELY.

2. If you don't know how, pay someone.

3. No idea what virus program you would have to load as soon as you un-box this laptop, considering it ships installed with Windows Defender active on start up. I don't even know where to begin on the comment that the aforementioned anti virus ruined the OS. What the hell did you install, dude?

4. Don't 1 star a laptop that bricked from user error.

Now, I've had this laptop for a few weeks now and I love it. The Trinity A-10 4600M processor with discrete class gpu is powerful enough to compete with an i-5 running an Intel hd integrated gpu. I just installed a crucial m4 256gb SSD and upgraded the ram to 16gb, did a clean install of Win8 and this baby screams.

This isn't JUST HP, but we can start with them. So they ship you this computer, but withhold the 3 OS and Restore discs that would cost a $1 during manufacturing to package with the computer. Then they want $16 for the discs, postage, and handling later; except most people don't know they need them until their machine is in a bad way. So then when you need them the most, your waiting for delivery. So by "saving the planet" they are wasting more fuel, packaging, and time by SELLING to you what is already yours. Sure, on some machines you can burn your own, but when you get a new machine, with new antivirus that says "load immediately" which then crashes the OS prior to building one system restore point and your machine is toast, then what?

NEC Mobile Pro 900

NEC Mobile Pro 900I really wanted a more powerful Jornada 720 which is sort of the claim that NEC puts on this product. They keyboard is pretty good and some parts of the design like the placement of the CF slot and the PC Card are perfect. However, this is not exactly a small form factor like the Jornada it is about the size of a Fujitsu P1120 or a Avertec P. Weight wise it is about .5lb from the the P1120 and 2lbs from the Avertec. A good part is that it does have the ability to instantly turn on but the screen is terrible. In fact probably the worst screen of any PDA / Laptop I have seen. It is all washed out. I wanted this so that I could throw it in a Gym bag and if needed instantly turn it on and trade stocks through a TMobile Aircard. I found that the syncing with ActiveSync 3.7 was terrible, sometimes it would work other times it would fail on WinNT2000K and with XP Pro it was a nightmare. Part of the NEC 900 that is rotten is the OS. THe HPC 2000 is just plain buggy. The AirCard software would die while it works on a PDA and over 6 laptops and tablets.

Pros:

+ Turns on fast

+ CPU is definately faster than Jornada like 4 times as fast

+ CF/PCMCIA slot are position nicely and takes both I/II

+ Keyboard excellent

COns:

+ Too big just isn't small enough to be like a Jornada and too small to be like a P1120 or Sony TR1 or JVC Interlink all of which are much more powerful

+ Screen is worst I have ever seen

+ Syncing/OS is out of date and difficult

Bottom line for the price it isn't too bad if you want something light to type on or run excel spreadsheets that will last 8 hours. They keyboard is awesome so if you have large fingers and need an ultra portable this is ok if you can get around the screen.

NEC did a good job with this one! With the improved battery life, the USB slave port, the flash ROM, OS, and the 400mhz processor NEC surely made a seller! Many people do not realize that this unit is not running Windows XP, so this unit can out speed most laptops with its operating system!

People need to actually give HPC devices an honest chance, and with the right expectations. They will not be disappointed!

with good features for an IT department. Your mileage may vary, but it is not really suitable for consumer use. Yes, the keyboard is surpisingly good, the screen sharp, the time to load screaming fast, and it has a good suite of features. On the other hand, for this very experienced user, it took an inordinate amount of time to get it to synchronize with the desktop or connect to AT&T Worldnet. Once connected, however, I couldn't get the unit to resolve domain names (i.e., I couldn't actually connect to the world wide web). The straw, however, was that two programs would not terminate, and NEC support confirmed that my only alternative was to remove the batteries and do a hard reset. It's a shame, and my experience may not be typical, but you're warned--don't try this at home.

I bought a used NEC Mobile Pro 900 to use as a digital typewriter to take with me to coffeehouses while I work on my novel with my writing group. While it can access the wifi in the coffeehouse with a gold orinoco card, I find that the wifi is too slow for anything but the most basic use. Finding items that are compatible with the antique software and hardware has been a challenge. It will only accept a CF card up to 8 gigs. I use a transcend 512meg CF I card with it and find that it works the best for transferring my text in and out of the word processor to my desktop. I also have a 1 gig CF card that I use to flash it with software. Mainly, I use the software that came with it, a thesaurus and a word count program that I found for free on the internet.

However, despite the negatives of this old machine, it has proven to be a good writing instrument. It is instant on/off, is smaller than most netbooks on the market and has a rugged construction. While the keyboard is not full sized, it is large enough to type on comfortably. The battery life is much better than modern netbooks, I can get a good eight hours on a fully charged battery. The touch screen and stylus took a little getting used to as compared to a mouse, but I find that after a while it was just as easy to use. I like the infra-red transfer feature. I also own an alphasmart and the infra-red works between the two. I can also hook up the alphasmart via USB connection and the NEC will recognize it as a keyboard.

If you buy a NEC Mobile Pro 900, you need to be aware of the compatibility issues, but otherwise it is a nice little machine and I can recommend it as an inexpensive distraction free writing device.

This unit runs Windows CE operating system by Microsoft. Great built-in apps (Office, Excel, Access, Power Point, etc.). The keyboard is a bit cramped for speed typing.

This is my least favorite PDA device (I also have the IBM-Z50, HP Jornada 680 and 728 models, Casio E-125). The NEC 900 was built mainly to be used in industrial settings. The screen is dull and somewhat washed-out.

I only take this unit with me to job-sites in high-crime areas, so if I lose it, I won't care that much!

Still ... It's better than a PDA with no keyboard. The screen is OK when indoors. There is a lot of Windows CE software out there (on the Internet) for free. Good for the kiddies doing their homework on the run.

Better units are the Jornada 680,728 series light, small and good screen,

and the IBM Z50 its almost full-size keyboard and great IBM support.

Owned this about year and a half. Just now was advised that the hard drive is ok but the motherboard is fried because the cord connection is a weak spot and if used or moved frequently it destroys the motherboard. Just be advised. Its apparently an HP problem on other computers also. Get the Pro series which has the connections in the back of the computer.

Acer Aspire V3-731-4649 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

Acer Aspire V3-731-4649 17.3-Inch LaptopI only owned Personal PC's until I purchased a Acer 11 inch "One" netbook for traveling and I was amazed at the picture quality and tthe prihe nice feel and the keyboard especially at that price. Lately my wife needed a laptop and so I decided on Acer again since I was so happy with the quality of my last Acer product. I got this for cheaper than most 15.6 computers cost without compromising any features. It is very fast, it is a breeze to set up, it has a lot of hard drive space, it has a full size keyboard with number keys on the right side. I'm glad I got the 17.3 screen mainly because if I want to stream anything you have a nice size picture and speaking of that the image quality is outstanding on this machine. The only thing I don't like about this laptop is the gloss black finish, be prepared to clean off fingerprints all of the time. That's the only thing I can find fault with but everything else about it I love.

i have been shopping for a new computer for a wile waiting for the right deal to come along, here it is .acer has put everything [but one of intels new i-chip's]that you could ever want packed into a 17'' large, beautiful screened laptop at any price and this one is only $429.

-what it's not:--a gamer lacking newer i-3,5,7 and has integrated video.no solid state hard drive,no blue-ray,not a touch screen.

-what it is: --quick and responsive

--connection's are endless -I've connected wired and wireless printers, media server, tablet, plasma

tv,wireless mouse,Bluetooth speaker and still counting with out any problems,

--light for it's size

--the screen wow i watch a lot of movie's,tv,and play some games they all look great.

-the keyboard is responsive and the key's look awesome surrounded by brushed aluminum.

There are a couple of not so stellar feature's.the sound quality is not great [I've never really been impressed with laptop sound anyway] and the glossy finish, wile it's beautiful only last's until you touch it. also the touchpad's a little touchy[I use an external mouse] .

Now about windows 8, the jury is still out.fancy widgets and app's.I downloaded mozzilafirefox and found the more familiar os hidden right behind.still learning how to use but I see it's potential.

I love this computer,I love the price.

A few glitches . . . . . Touch pad was a problem and had to download a new driver (an older driver than one on computer). At least I can type now without my cursor jumping all over the page! My touch pad is still not operating like i think it should. Sometimes I have to click numerous times to make it activate.

When I opened my computer for the first time, one of the keys was loose. i was successful in attaching it back, but then the other day, a different key popped off. it wasn't so easy to reattach. I hope this isn't going to be an ongoing issue.

Also, The shiny black finish is not something I would ever consider again. It shows fingerprints and smudges really bad. The buff grey that I had before was so much better.

This is my 2nd Acer and If this one holds up like the last one, it will be great.

The Acer laptop met all my expectations. The screen is very large and extremely clear and I liked the built-in wireless Wi-FI connectivity. I was totally unfamiliar with Windows 8, so that took some time to research on the web, but I found several sites that provided step-by-step instructions on how to use and revise the appearance and location for the apps on the menu screen. I've had the computer for two weeks and am very satisfied with everything. Even the Acer support line was very responsive. I have no regrets about this purchase.

The sound didn't function (I could barely hear it, even though all levels were at maximum)...I paid $80 for a computer tech, who couldn't fix it, so I had to ship it to Acer for repair (box COST ME $10). If the issue related to software, it will be resolved by performing a recovery.

Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J/L 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB

Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J/L 15.4-Inch Laptop BlueSpecifications list a high-end "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430 graphics (2040 MB total shared)". NOT. The product only has the low-end "Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family". BURNED.

Indeed, a search on Sony's website confirms this.

As such, it is certainly not powerful enough for gaming, and probably not powerful enough for the Blue-Ray player included. In any event, the advertisement is false advertisement. Buyer beware.

I ordered this laptop as a replacement/upgrade to my old one. I haven't found anything either wrong with it or not as described. I actually shortly after, bought a similar laptop (VGN-NS150J) for my mom as a present. Amazon had the best price I could find and free shipping was decently fast. No complaints. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Buy Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J/L 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB Now

For the price this laptop offers, it's a pretty good deal. Be Sure that when you do get it you know what it's for.

The video card is by far the systems downfall, it's (as an early reviewer said) an intel 4 family video card so those looking to any high end or recent gaming might be looking elsewhere, a gaming laptop with this display size at this price doesn't exist. That being said, it still plays games like WoW on lower (not lowest, but lower) settings and it can be enjoyed comfortably. Any game circa 2004 will run fine, but you shouldn't be expecting much from an on-board video card (also I stress that laptop video card upgrades typically are impossible)

The Machine does have a Blu Ray drive and I'm sure Sony is more than interested in you watching their new format on it, and to be honest despite the max resolution of 1280x800 the Blu Rays really shine, they look gorgeous and clean ... the problem is there is no DVI ouput just VGA which means you will be watching them on the laptop and nothing else if you want to enjoy your Blu Ray. I have a PS3 though, for home use. Still, it's nice when you go on a trip and need to take your favorite high def movie along. Despite the weaker card the computer still makes Blu Ray look good, an earlier review speculated it wouldn't be possible but it is. It looks fine.

The design of the computer is really nice, the body of the computer is textured almost like cloth giving it a comfortable feel. I have one friend who bizarrely enough will rub my computer when he sees it I have to admit it is rather nice feeling. Sony has always had a nice design aesthetic and it shows here, with a nice looking, well laid out keyboard, and solid feeling construction. The shape and feel of the laptop really has that sleek minimalist feel that many companies today seem to be going for. Which is simply because it makes the machine look good, I dunno what else to say there.

The computer isn't without its flaws, however. For starters Sony includes an incredibly large amount of software with the computer. Some programs are useful, but largely they waste your space with some very insulting programs, like a wireless setup wizard that takes you to the default windows one, no one needs to waste space on such asinine programs. Vaio update, alternately, seems useless until you discover their drivers are edited for the laptop so you have to go through them. Another bizarre decision on Sony's part.

In conclusion if you're a person who wants a computer that isn't embarassingly ugly with a sleek classy minimalist design, and wants good performance in a mid-priced laptop, this very well could be for you. If you're looking to do heavy high-end gaming or need your first Blu Ray player there are better ways to spend your money for both of those.

Hope this helps and answers any questions anyone has.

Samsung QX410-J01 14in Notebook Aluminum

Samsung QX410-J01 14in Notebook AluminumLet me start by saying there are some drawbacks to this computer: No bluetooth, no blueray, i5 and not i7, and I don't love the touchpad, but...

There are some great features that I love on this laptop.

The multimedia functionality is quite good. The processing speeds for multiple high-demand applications running simultaneously are good. The keyboard is very comfortable and responsive which is huge for me because I type on it a lot. It has a great port configuration with HDMI and 2 of the 3 USBs under an easily accessible protective cover on the left, and 1 USB on the right very efficient for multiple devices. There is very little preloaded "factory" software to remove after purchase, in fact some of the samsung applications are quite handy (the backup for instance).

The aesthetics of this machine are great, it was half the price of the Macbook Pro with the same processing capabilities, it has the seperate dedicated video processing chip which is essential I think, and the battery life is double a comparable Sony or Toshiba (about 6.25 hours per charge -with an additional 3/4 of an hour after powering back on after first shut down).

One thing no one has mentioned is the overall thoughtful engineering. Not only is it very solid and comfortable, but there are a lot of little things that are well thought out. For instance the palm rest is slightly elevated above the keyboard so that when it closes the screen does not contact the keys. Seems like a small feature, but I enjoy watching my friend constantly cleaning finger oils off the screen of his $2,200 MacBook Pro. You can also charge USB devices from the laptop while not running, and the auto save features allow for great convenience (just shut the lid mid sentence and come back whenever to the exact same configuration you had going. This is very useful for me because I utilize multiple research programs and resources simultaneously while writing, and love being able to just slap the thing shut and resume at my convenience when others need my attention).

The portability, durability, screen resolution/quality, processing power (again the dual video processing is invaluable if you want to keep this thing for 5+ years like I intend to), and beauty of this computer combine to make it a very wonderful machine at a very economic price point.

This is a very sleek, stylish and well thought out computer that performs extremely well.

I am glad I trusted the Samsung name even though they are relatively new to the laptop space.

I have no idea if the 430 is of the same caliber as this 410 so I would recommend the 410. It's probably worth the extra $150!

I won't lie what first drew me to this laptop was its look. It is the essence of cool borrowing all the best parts from a host of other laptops and putting them together into the ultimate package. Ultra thin, light, and edge-to-edge glass = drool. But looks fade, right?

Well, so far, the QX410's brains match its looks. This laptop is fast and powerful. I've been editing HD video on here as well as mixing multiple tracks of audio. I have yet to make it slow down or stutter.

Last but not least, the battery. I routinely get 5-6 hours out of the battery and am very happy with that performance.

If someone forced me to say something negative I'd say that I wish the screen resolution were a bit higher it would help when I have an editing program open and a bunch of tool windows. Most times, this doesn't affect me.

Buy this laptop, you won't regret it.

I've had the QX410 about 3 weeks now. I really like it.

Pros:

Nice feel, nice keyboard action. Stiff hinge. Looks pretty, feels solid.

Built-in drive partitioning

Nice start-up and shut-down speed

Great battery life 5 to 6+ hours per charge

Very nice display love the edge-to-edge glass, brighter and easier to clean than standard LCD

Cons:

A lot heavier than it looks

The i5 processor is so-so for multimedia work better than most in its class, but bogs down a lot faster than the Lenovo Thinkpad R400 I use for work.

Hate the keyboard layout if you're an IBM person, you're going to screw up your screen dimensions whenever you reach for your control key. Yes, you adjust eventually, but it's frustrating.

Also don't much like the mouse buttons integrated into the mouse pad. I keep relocating the cursor with my sleeves. But again, you adjust eventually. It's not a big deal.

Overall, it looks and feels great. Good strong wireless, nice port set up (3 USBs and a HDMI) for a slimline, really good battery life even on full-light display. Great value for the money, and I'm happy with it. It'll handle 2-3 high-load operations at a time. But if you're looking for serious multimedia processing power, this may not be the one for you.

In order to provide an extensive review, I would have to wait some more time for such a review. However, my first impressions can (hopefully) suffice for now.

I purchased this laptop from Woot! back on May 21st and eagerly awaited its arrival, which occurred on June 1st. I've had it for about a week now, have toyed with it, and so far it is wonderful. I could rave and go on about the great things about it, but I will only give a few cons for right now.

As per the most helpful critical review, I've had no touchpad problems of that sort. However, I have noticed that at times the touchpad doesn't register the click immediately after typing, even with the Palm Guard option turned off. This is hardly a nuisance, however, since I use a wireless mouse most of the time.

The hard drive is 5400 rpm, so those who are used to 7200 rpm hard drives may notice some degradation in terms of performance or file transfers, but whether this is troublesome or not depends on the end user. In my case, it makes no difference.

The screen is a bit iffy. While the edge-to-edge glass is pretty nice, it is extremely reflective, which can be a nuisance on lower brightness settings. But hey, you don't have to worry about accidentally hitting your screen and having it damage the pixels inside. Also, the 14" screen is nice, but considering the extra space around the edges to match the width of the laptop, Samsung could have fit in a 15" screen just as easily.

The battery may be a problem in the future. It is not user-replaceable, so anyone who likes to remove it when not in use cannot do so. Since it lasts 1000 cycles, this may not immediately be a problem, so we will have to see once the first owners of this machine have held out for its lifetime (since it was released in Q4 2010, we have a while to wait).

The GPU is not very powerful, but it is a vast improvement over an integrated card, which this machine also comes paired with, allowing for extended battery life when not using visually intensive programs. I play Minecraft regularly, and the dedicated card is more than enough to run it super smoothly, surprisingly better than my other machine with a much more powerful GPU.

One thing to note, though, about the RAM in this machine is that 210 Mb of its 4 Gb are reserved for video memory for the integrated GPU, so only 3.79 of its 4 Gb of RAM are accessible. However, considering how well this machine performs, I have never run into any problems with this.

As a final thought, the pros FAR outweigh the cons, which are few and minor. The laptop in its entirety is GORGEOUS. Very high quality, solid build, light enough to carry around with you, very thin, and -my favorite part -very long-lasting. The claim for the battery in this machine is 7 hours. Well, I've clocked it in at 8:23 before, so I'm one happy camper. :)

The mouse on this laptop is VERY annoying! First it sticks, and then it runs around on it's own like crazy! There's a setting to change the 8 different things the mouse does. That's the problem...this mouse thinks it knows too much and doesn't want to always do what what you tell it to do. Other than that this is a REALLY nice laptop. Hope it helps to prevent someone for getting highly frustrated with the mouse.

Sony VAIO VPCEG34FX/B 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO VPCEG34FX/B 14-Inch LaptopI was skeptical at first, so I bought a Samsung i7 laptop instead. The Samsung, like most of the other laptops looked plain and outdated. The deal killer was the fact that its i7 was mystifyingly slow, so i took it back and gave the Sony a try! I was immediately impressed by the Vaio i5's speed, it is clocked at 2.5GHZ with speed boost up to 3.1GHZ so it just zipped to my tasks. The screen is bright and clear as you would expect from Sony. The battery is very good and i can go all day at school without a recharge. The diamond texture repels fingerprints, so it always looks clean. it has the Vaio Gate that livens up the windows 7 desktop. I also own a Sony Playstation 3 and this laptop features remote play so i can play PS3 games or access my PS3 from anywhere. The WIFI is fine if you update the drivers from Intel. My only complaint is the video camera isn't the best. I have looked hard after buying this computer and I cant find anything at this price that can meet all of my needs with the speed and style of this Vaio.

After my Macbook Pro gave out, I really wanted another computer with great color and visual as well as the easy feel of the Mac. The Vaio was very sleek and light weight. It had an interesting diamond finish that didn't show fingerprints too much but still looked good. The keyboard was comfortable and soft to the touch it could really use a back light at night though, very hard to see. Start-up was very easy, the computer booted extremely quickly. There wasn't too much bloatware but it was easily removed in just a few minutes.

Unfortunately, the Vaio has one major drawback. The wifi is very erratic. It would find our network and then for no reason drop the network. Many times I would have to go into the network settings and cancel and resubmit the connection. Sometimes this would work, sometimes, I would wait 3-4 minutes for it to reconnect. I downloaded and installed over 28 updates from Microsoft for Windows 7, none made any substantial difference. My husband upgraded our router at the house, no difference. I contacted Sony who told me to contact Intel and I went round and round. Nothing made any difference in the performance of this computer's wireless abilities. We have many other devices at our home on the wireless, including 2 Macs, a Dell laptop, Kindle, iPods, and iPad. The only one that has ever had any issue with the wireless was the Sony Vaio. In searching the net, I found many references to this problem, many dating back up to two years ago. Until, Sony can solve this issue, I would suggest avoiding this particular model.

I purchased the Sony Vaio in late January, so I've had it for about 3 months, and I absolutely love it! I initially had an issue with the wireless connection and had to call Sony customer support, but after a couple hours on the phone with the technicians, they finally figured out that it was a startup application causing a conflict with my wireless. Needless to say, they resolved the issue the day after I received the computer, and since then the wireless has worked flawlessly.

I just finished an online Master's program, and this computer was a dramatic upgrade from my last computer and made taking classes online much easier! It is an excellent computer for watching movies, doing school work, using the Internet, etc. It's super fast and I haven't had any issues.

The look of the computer is also very classy. It's super portable and the battery life is amazing (lasting several hours before needing to be plugged in). The screen is a beautiful display. I would highly recommend this product to a friend.

UPDATE 4/10/13:

I've had this computer for over a year now, and it still runs as if it is brand new. I have not had any issues with it. I would highly recommend this product!

(See my uploaded pictures for relevant perspective of the following written review / instructions)

WiFIrepower.

Room for three WiFi cards or three dual WiFi/BT cards including the internal BroadCom BT means you can shoulder seven 802.11 adapters. ( Four BT + 3 WiFi Ethernet)

Install SMA connectors and connect to the adapters of your choice and you'll have an infinite number of combination's tunable to any urban and even rural environment.

You have to whitelist the BIOS to avoid the notorious ThinkPad 1802 "non compatible network adapter" block.

You have to execute LINUX or suitable operating system other than Windows to access the other two MiNi PCI slots for WiFi and BT. Lenovo and Microsoft only recognizes those slots for WiMax and the useless Intel Turbo Cache.

Linux inside a VM on Win32 isn't adequate enough to provide unfettered hardware access to the extra MiniPCI slots. Enabling VTxtensions doens't make a difference.

Win32 (XP, Vista, Win7 and Win8 BETA / RTM) recognizes the adapters, installs drivers and even reads their MaC ID's but refuses to TX/RX signal from them. Win32 allows some cards to transmit an announcement frame and keeps the antennas hot and detectable by other WiFi sniffers but doesn't allow your adapters to interactively RX or TX. At the same time, pen tests against the restrained cards failed since all other packets were summarily dropped.

In a suitable version of uBuntu, this three card system dominated the surrounding airspace like a roving wolf claiming new territory.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14116FXB 14-Inch Laptop (Sharkskin Black)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14116FXB 14-Inch LaptopI was kind of nervous about buying a laptop online, but I researched the model I was considering and went into Best Buy to check it out in person. I LOVE this laptop. It's very fast & smooth and fortunately I haven't had any issues with the keyboard as the previous reviewer mentioned. I love how the keys light up and you can set the backlighting to always on, only when plugged in or always off. It comes preloaded with some great Sony software that you can choose to keep or remove. I removed some of it, but kept most of the Imagination Suite, which includes Sony ACID & Vegas. It has very nice features, light weight and has really good battery life. After charging it in the morning I can go almost all day without needing to recharge it. This is doing regular tasks on it like browsing the internet, checking email, watching videos on YouTube, etc. Overall I am loving this laptop and very happy with my purchase. If you have any questions leave it in the comments below and I will try to answer your question. I hgihly recommend this laptop! If you were on the fence about getting it, I say GET IT!

With almost 750GB of space, there is plenty of room to store an entire music collection, photos, videos and documents.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found this laptop to be light, responsive to commands, fast, with a good display. Typing and launching applications is quick. Even while using processor-heavy applications like Handbrake doesn't seem to slow other functions down much. I had to play with the settings of the trackpad to make it work the way I am used to, but now it is responsive and easy to use.

The drawback is the keyboard, which feels a bit cheap and flimsy. I don't like its "bounce" and feedback, though after a week's use, I am getting used to it. The lighting of the keyboard also doesn't actually help in darker environments.

Sony includes some useful applications, like Vegas Movie Studio, but like many PCs, much of what is included can be removed.

Still, for the size, weight and specs I feel like I've made a good purchase.

First this laptop was purchased for my spouse not me, so I will skip the review on the color. She likes it and that's that. ;)

Now, on to business. Sony VAIO systems have had their ups and downs over the years. However, I can mostly say that Sony has come back with its new line of laptops. They seem to be built better and don't contain as much bloatware as they used it. Why computer companies still insist of packing every piece of horrible software onto their system is beyond me (yes, it could lower the price a bit, but then customers are bombarded with horrible software and blame you for installing it on their system). Anyway, I digress...

What Sony did install on this system that is fairly helpful for the average user, is a "smart" suite that basically checks the system for you and ensures you are running the latest and greatest software and have the right patches to keep your system safe. This suite isn't perfect, however it will at least keep the system cleaner than most suites I've seen from other companies that simply just try to sell you more of their products right from your own desktop (really, commercials on my computer...no, thanks). Additionally, this suite is a teaching tool. Sony takes the time to answer the hottest questions currently floating around the web pertaining to laptops. Need to learn how to hook up that new printer you just purchased to your network or laptop for use? Sony will tell you. Need to figure out if upgrading your laptop to Windows 8 is possible? Sony has you covered (it is btw). Want to know how to fix that annoying little issue that seems to be plaguing you (and likely other Sony customers)? Yep, you guessed it...Sony will post the answer in plain English right on your desktop software suite and even provide you steps to fix it. Not bad Sony, not bad at all.

Now on to the actual system. Let me first give the biggest con of them all. The trackpad is absolutely a nightmare on this system. Seriously I am not able to figure out if I'm clicking or scrolling or simply shaking my mouse pointer back and forth. They decided to incorporate the mouse buttons right into the trackpad, so you don't have separate things to touch but for these burly hands, I am unable to master it. My spouse...no complaints (I think she secretly hates it, but doesn't want to agree with me...*sigh*). If you like those "one surface does it all" type track/touchpads, then this will not bother you and you can ignore the previous portion of this review. The rest of the system is fairly nicely laid out. Keyboard is the newer "chiclet keyboard", which basically means each key is independent on the board instead of a single large mesh for food and other junk to fall into. I like that idea and believe it should become standard on all laptops. The keys, themselves, light up when used, so great for surfing in a dark room during movie night. Most of the function keys are nicely labeled, so you can figure out what two keys you have to hit to replicate the same feature that a normal 108+ keyboard has. Want to page up/down? FN+up-arrow/down-arrow takes care of you (I dislike not having dedicated page-up/down keys, but understand the use due to limited space). The ports (USB, HDMI, card reader, etc) are all nicely placed and easily accessible without looking cheap. There is a powered USB port on one side of the laptop to allow you to charge your USB device, even if you lose the laptop for storage (excellent feature and should be standard, as it is silly that I have to keep a laptop open to charge an iDevice while on the road). The built-in camera and mic work great (Skype tested and approved by family/friends). The powercord and brick are standard and seem solid enough to not cause concern that they'll break within a year (so many manufacturers seem to send crappy powerbricks, so you have to buy their replacement one for $80+ after the original breaks).

So, overall, this system is fairly well built, has a good amount of useful software pre-installed (yes a little bloatware, but nothing worth complaining about), and seems fairly sturdy. If this changes over the next year of use we'll be sure to update this review. As an HP laptop user for work (I know, stop laughing, it is what we have), I can honestly say I am impressed with how Sony turned around and revitalized their consumer line of laptops (their enterprise line was always well-respected and trusted).

I foolishly ignored the reviews about this laptop, blinded by the light up keyboard and intel 5 processor. It IS a lot faster than my old netbook, and I really enjoy the light-up keyboard. However, as other people mentioned, the mouse pad is very annoying and hard to use. Luckily I already had a nice wireless mouse that is connected via a small USB chip. If you are going to buy this, I would suggest buying a mouse as well. I would also recommend getting a warranty, I have recently started having problems with my laptop just randomly shutting off and then not turning back on for awhile. It's very strange. I like it, but I think I probably could have gotten something better for what I paid.

Sony VAIO PCG-FRV37 Laptop (2.80-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD-RW/CD-RW Drive)

Sony VAIO PCG-FRV37 LaptopIf you are looking for a portable computer this SONY is simply awesome. A notebook or laptop it is not; its big and heavy by todays standards but the performance is fantastic!

The Gateway desktop died (will never buy from them again) and couldn't be brought back to life so I decided to pick up a "notebook". The FRV37 is blazing fast, the screen is large, bright and clear & its got plenty of HD space (if you need more consider getting an external USB hard drive). With a CD and a DVD burner you really don't need a desktop machine anymore. It comes with a nice software bundle. Its got firewire built in and is great for capturing video from digital video cameras. If you go on vacation, take this computer, a Sony or Canon Digitial video cam and an Olympus digital camera and everyone on the trip can go home with CDs or DVDs of the trip.

Buy this machine if you want to replace your desktop, you don't need long bettery life (it gets about 2 hours max), and you want something portable but not light weight. The only thing missing is built in wireless but for about $50.00 you can get a wireless card that will do the trick. This computer has NEVER crashed unlike all previous computers (desktops from Gateway) that crashed frequently.

Only 4 stars because its heavy, has short battery life and missing built in wireless.

First of all, even though this is a 60 gig drive, you only get 50 g of usable space. Seems they reserved 10g for restoring. You are supposed to be able to use some dvd-rw to restore it (there is no restore cd included), however, it won't let me. I'm not about to sit down w/ 10+ cd-r's to do this. They give you lots of software, but nothing that great. I had been using an old version of Quicken. The Quicken 2003 that came with it would not let me import the info w/o buying the upgraded version.

All in all it's a good package though. the documentation that comes in the box is more ad's for sony products than actual info on your $1600 investment. I can't find out the actual dvd burning speed, but it appears that it is only 1x. boo

This barely gets the fourth star.

Good, but could have been better.

I bought this computer recently after I got my old one stolen. As a college student, this computer has proved to be fast and reliable, though the main two reasons why I didn't give it a 5/5 is because:

a)It is pretty bulky by today's standards

b)No S-Video port (a must on most of today's computers, but it does have a VGA port so you can still manage to connect it to other audio/video devices).

The speakers that the computer include are not that great, but I already had Z-680's so it wasn't a big deal.

The graphics on this computer are pretty good, and it has a decent amount of memory. The DVD burner is also a huge +.

I purchased this notebook around 2 years back. Overall the performance is good. As mentioned by other reviewer, the battery life is very poor. You can not do multitasking, the performance becomes slow. I don't like the screen as well. It doesn't have the wide, xbrite screen and you can not watch movies in group.

I think I like the most is the the dvd burning capacity. I have copied many dvds without any problem.

Overall its OK laptop.

I bought this laptop 7 months ago, as a desktop replacement, and I quite like it. But I'm not sure why it weighs a ton, the battery now lasts less than half an hour, and the DVD burner has a DVD-to-coaster making ratio of less than 50%.

But on the plus side it's powerful (I use it for video editing), and the screen and keyboard are both good, and overall it's not bad value, especially if you're lucky enough to get a reliable DVD burner.

HP Consumer Refurbished Pavilion m6-1045dx 15.6" Entertainment Notebook PC

HP Consumer Refurbished Pavilion m6-1045dx 15.6' Entertainment Notebook PCThis is a great product for a pretty good price, 3rd generation core I5 with speedboost is extremely fast, 8 gigs of ddr3 plenty of memory hardware specs are top the screen is beautiful, the hard drive leaves alot to be desired, you have this powerhouse of a laptop and then a 5400 rpm drive!??!, needless to say i threw a samsung SSD 840 in there and my boot time is so fast it almost goes back in time.

Pros:

Top of the line hardware

Speedtests/stress tests all successful and good ratings

Intel Graphics 4000 HUGE improvement over the 2/3/3.5 graphics on the previous line of chips, i can even play battlefield3 with little to no lag although not on the highest settings

Ram is quality ram although its not max speed the board can handle.

Screen is extremely vivid esp with the led backlite

Audio is LOUD but quality due to the beats framework

Cons:

5400 rpm drive is a disgrace to this powerhouse, I personally recommend a Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch

a bit on the heavy side and it gets very warm on your lap but thats to be expected

power settings in OS before i replaced and reformatted where defaulted to HP economy settings, set to high performance

not really a con but an observation that battery life on high performance was about 5 hours

Overall its a great laptop, but i would spend an extra few bucks on a SSD for it

super fast laptop love the simple pass reader now don't have to remember all passwords. Plus the beats audio just make it even better I do recommend this pc with the i5

HP ProBook 4540s 15.6' NotebookI really love my new HP Probook. I would advise, however, that one sticks to Windows 7, not Win 8. This computer is very quick and has plenty of memory. Great buy.

I bought this laptop after seeing the specs on a different website. Those CORRECT specs include an i3-3110M CPU, Windows 7 Pro installed w/ Windows 8 disks included, 500GB hard drive. Basically, the OS is an upgrade, the CPU is an upgrade, the hard drive is an upgrade. I thought you should know if you are looking at the machine. Could be a problem if you are trying to buy an exact replacement for some purpose in an enterprise environment, etc. Otherwise its just getting more than what you paid for.

This is my first Windows 8 machine. Windows 8 seems to be all about "apps", which I have no interest in. Initially, the Windows 8 startup screen (apps in your face) was a pain in the neck, but I quickly learned to go quickly to the desktop. I do, however, appreciate the very rapid startup and shut down of Windows 8.

The keyboard has a nice crisp feel, which is a real plus since I do a lot of typing.

The reason I gave four stars instead of five is because the touch pad isn't great. I've only owned two laptops prior to this one, so I don't have a lot to compare to. Perhaps touch pads are generally lousy. But, in any event, I've have a lot of trouble controlling the position of the "mouse pointer" with the touch pad. Bought a USB mouse, so this is no longer an issue when I'm working at a desk. When I'm traveling and don't have a hard surface available for the mouse, I just have to put up with the touch pad.

It arrived 3 hours ago and the box contained a disk for Windows 8 and

instructions for Windows 8

Never unpacked the rest

Just got back from shipping it back via UPS

The service was great as it arrived in 2 days

I am now wondering if Windows 7 was loaded and the disks for 8 were for an update if desired

as I see some HPs are advertised as such.

If that was the situation it should have said so in the accompanying billing list and on site description

But I didn't want to mess around with the unit so I never opened it
