ASUS G55VW-RS71 15.6-Inch ROG Laptop (Black)

ASUS G55VW-RS71 15.6-Inch ROG LaptopThis laptop is really amazing. I can run COD Black Ops 2 maxed out on everything except shadows on medium and get about 70 fps. I also use it for work and create power spectra plots almost instantly using a fairly demanding app within Matlab. I can have almost 10 such plots open at the same time while having several browser windows open. I just purchased 8 more GB of RAM because I am doing some serious multitasking. The vents blow away from the user and barely get warm unless hardcore gaming. I love the slight incline the keyboard has. The speakers are loud.

I do have one con, and that is I hit the track pad with my palm, on accident, deleting parts of emails and various other things. It happens enough were I get upset but fairly minor compared to everything that is great about it. I am not sure I would pay the price Amazon is asking. I bought mine from Newegg for $999 but they are sold out and this laptop is discontinued.

It does have an illuminated keyboard but there is more leakage from underneath the keys than from the numbers and letters themselves and this was almost not worth mentioning.

HP Pavilion DV6-1050US 16.0-Inch Laptop (2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 400 G

HP Pavilion DV6-1050US 16.0-Inch Laptop1. Bus Speed is 800Mhz. In the laptop world, this would be right between slow and fast. If you a casual user (watch youtube while checking your e-mail and writing a report), this will be sufficient.

If you like to do multiple things at once (extended desktop to create dual screen enviroment, move large files to and from external HDs, burn a cd, with video(s) playing and a music production progam running) my recommendation is that you become familar with tweeking your Vista settings or buy a more powerful computer. It's not that it can't handle such lofty requests, it can. It will just be slow/will lock up.

2. Comes with 4Gb DDR2 (2x2GB). Now, this will be MORE than enough RAM for almost anyone. But what if you dream big and want to be a desktop in laptop's clothing? It's upgradable to 8GB, which is rare for a laptop. For the most part, 8 Gb laptop RAM (2 x 4GB) doesn't exsist. If you can find it, it will be at least $250+. HP Build a laptop states that a 8GB upgrade would be $400. Why would you need this much ram? I cannot say. This may be useful in the future, I do not know.

3. Harddrive speed is 5400RPM. This goes back to how much multi-accessing you do. 7200RPM would be nice, but not necessary.

4. Bloatware. I'm not really sure why this is much of a complaint in regards of any computer. Windows/Control Panel has a build in remove software feature that can remove most software completely in a short period of time. I'm sure that some computers come with INSANE programs that are so integrated into Windows, you must have a court order and holy water to remove it from your life. If you don't like the in house program, there is 3rd party softwere (free & pay) out there that claims to do a more through job cleaning out the gunk.

5. The Vista experience is rated at 3.8. Just a FYI.

6. This really isn't a "gaming" PC. It's just not. Spades, No problem. Minesweep until you can't see straight. It's your world baby. Crysis (and if you know what this game is, you know what I'm gonna say next) ain't happpening. BUT, if someone wants to try it on this notebook, please leave a comment on this review and let me know how that goes.

7. There is a slot in the PC that holds the mini remote control. On the left side of the laptop. COOOOOOOOOLLLLL! At least I think so.

8. Do I like this laptop. I do. It's not the fanciest thing on the market, but for the price, it's good.

I have only had this for five or so days but i am in love with it already lol.

I am a amateur photogrpher and i already have a bunch of photos stored on it, the space on this is great!

I have been on about eight or nine different sites (including youtube) at once and they are all as fast as just haveing one open.

The web cam is good quality, with great effects. the mic is crystal clear.

The lightscribe is great, even though it isnt in color i definitely prefer it over labels.

Oh, the only thing i wasnt looking forward to was the fact that the battery only last two hours. But it actually last about 4 hours, and that is with the laptop open and being used for four hours straight.

I shopped around and believe me, this is the best "Bang for the Buck" around. I no longer really play games, so the Intel integrated video being the only weak point was no big deal. ***Amazon's Ethernet Specs are Wrong*** This unit does NOT have Gigabit Ethernet, 10/100mb connection only. But everything else is top notch. Core 2 Duo 2.0, Beautiful 16" 720P HD Screen, Vista 64bit Premium (Do yourself a favor and buy the Upgrade to Ultimate 64bit), 320GB HD, 4GB Ram, eSATA, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, docking port, Wireless N!!!, remote and this is one gorgeous laptop.

I added a Gigabit Ethernet Express Card for $50, from Amazon, to make this laptop perfect.

This is a case of "You get MORE than what you pay for..."

I fell in love with this machine the instant I saw its specs and looks in Amazon... I got it delivered and the first problem I had was that the computer was described as having an internal bluetooth antenna, which after searching how to start it for half and hour and chatting with HP I realized it was not there! I got a discount from Amazon for this "mistake" which seems to happen quite frequently (I had the same problem with a Toshiba Satellite I purchased a while ago). The 64bit Vista is rather problematic than helpful. I am considering either upgrading to Ultimate or downgrade to 32bit. Although its processor is ranked as "genious" and it brings 4gb of ram I have runned tests with my old Toshiba running 32 bit Vista with a slower processor and with half the ram and time after time my new HP gets beaten!!!!!!!!!!!! I experience so many software related problems I cannot feel satisfied a single day about my purchase! The speakers and volume control give so many problems as well: I place the laptop in "mute" and still I get a fraction of a second of the beep of the instant messenger I use; the speakers are always making this noise like the power was just turned on; the volume control is non-responsive and then when it finally answers my command, it gets stuck both visually and audible. I still doubt that this machine can be expanded up to 8gb of ram as the specs in Amazon advertise, but I have not checked this yet. I guess I will get further disappointed... It's a shame that I feel this way for a laptop I found so captivating and (thought) powerful... Now I bought an xb3000 expansion base (which is advertised as the compatible one for the dv6) and I found myself with the obligation to purchase a new A/C adapter since the laptop AC should work with the base but guess what? the dv6 AC is too big for the base!!! So there you can add $50 extra if you decide to get the whole bunch. Bottom line: You can get the same performance with a cheaper, more convenient model and save yourself a lot of hassle... Sad but true!

This is my very 1st laptop, and 2nd HP computer. Originally I was looking for another desktop, as I didn't feel I could afford a laptop with decent specs. But I came across this while browsing. The price point was very good and I couldn't believe how loaded it was. Very fast, love the HD briteview wide screen. Loads up in decent time, even with all the bloatware and preinstalled Norton crap. It also has a handy little remote to run HP's media center. All in all I am very pleased with this computer.

ASUS G53SX-A1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of gamers (Black)

ASUS G53SX-A1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of gamersI bought this laptop after mine broke down (Toshiba TECRA A7, which lasted more than five years). It's fast, the keyboard is ergonomical, the lighting on it is awesome too, battery life is more than I expected for a laptop with these specs (more than three hours! with no energy savings settings). I'm mainly using it for studies and video processing, so it gets the job done fast. Definitely a good purchase, although my plans of buying a 4 GB SODIMM module to expand it's memory to 16 GB may be hindered since dismantling it can prove to be a bit difficult. Other than that it's awesome. I don't mind the design, I personally like it, but I know there's a few out there that absolutely hate it. It's a bit heavy but I don't plan to carry it around much, mostly home or friends' houses so I don't mind that. The backpack is cool, BIG and "shiny". The ROG mouse looks and feels awesome, but I'm in love with my old Microsoft Trackball Explorer USB 1.0! For it's price, the ASUS G53SX-A1 is a steal.

I was in the market for a monster gaming laptop and this was the one I ended up buying and I've been very happy about it.

Pros:

1) I was looking for Core i7, decent discrete graphics card, Blu-Ray, 1080p, and backlit keyboard. Even though this machine did not have BluRay, it's still pretty decent for a sub $1200 machine

2) 12GB of RAM! That's way more than I'll need for now!

3) GTX560M is no slouch. Only been playing WOW, but it looks very good so far

4) The case is matte, which is better than glossy at attracting finger prints

5) 2 year global warranty is better than 1

6) An empty drive bay just in case you want to install a 2nd HDD or SSD

7) Not much bloatware. Still quite a bit to uninstall, but not as much as say HP

8) The backpack & mouse that I got was surprisingly good.

9) Runs really quiet (when not accessing the optical drives) and cool. There is a monster exhaust system in the back, so the vents gets very warm.

Cons:

1) Slow GFX bus when compared to G53SW-A1, but the other one have less RAM

2) Odd power adapter connection location and doesn't really fit in to the machine well

3) The computer is a MONSTER. It's about the same size as my old 17" Dell, definitely NOT portable

4) Speaking of portable, the battery life is also awful, again not really surprising and really pretty much expected.

5) You have to burn your own back up DVDs

6) Speakers are a bit weak when compared to similar machines

7) The extended keyboard is kind of squished, but I'm used to it now

8) Weird HDD partitions. There is a hidden 100GB recovery partition and two 300GB partitions (one is SYSTEM and the other DATA). Might mess around and install a 128GB SSD and make the 750GB the data drive later

9) Upgrading the GFX card not possible (again expected, but it is possible on a Dell)

10) No BluRay and only one USB3 port

So it's not a perfect machine, but the cons are mostly expected. Given the cost of this machine compared to say XPS 17 (Sub par GFX card & ram at the same price) & HP Envy (Suspect Motherboard), this machine was really too perfect to pass up. So far it's been very stable, quiet, fast, and cool. Really can't ask for much better other than maybe an internal BluRay drive. Did I mention that this machine is really fast and powerful?

Buy ASUS G53SX-A1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of gamers (Black) Now

This is a powerful machine. It is a BEAST in every meaning of the word. I love how it came with an OK quality backpack and a very nice gaming mouse.

The laptop itself has a very nice feel. Let me make a long story short:

Pros:

Amazing quality LCD screen. I LOVE the Matte finish.

Super powerful specs, 12 GB DDR3 1333 RAM, with best graphics of NVidia GTX at 2 GB, an i7 with great 7200 RPM Hard disk.

Super quiet, awesome feature.

Feels sturdy and nice keyboard.

Good multi-touch mouse pad.

Cons:

I like 15.6 laptops more than 17 because they are easier to carry. This one is supposedly 15.6, but has a big fat butt that makes it huge, and its very very heavy. My old 15.6 laptop fits nicely in my backpack, but this one doesn't... I wish I bought a 17 laptop instead :(

Big and heavy charger, looks like a brick actually.

My laptop couldn't find my 5 GHz network for some reason.

I don't know how to classify this, but the laptop design is very nice, except for the fat part in the back.

In short, I highly recommend this laptop, if you don't mind the weight, and huge charger. I guess a muscled beast like this requires heavy equipment to run. I love it so far :)

Great laptop all around, easy on the eyes.. Looks like it was designed by the military Lol

Well, I got this laptop to play games with and I gotta say this laptop doubled the power of my desktop. My desktop wasn't too bad either.. Anyways the only complaint I have is the sound, you would think that for the price and all the high quality parts included with this laptop that the sound would also be highest quality. Wrong, the sound sounds pretty cheap, and other laptops in the price range of this one come with a subwoofer as well. This one only has its realtek sound and the 2 bass-less speakers. Oh another con is it doesn't include a bluray player. The screen is 3D and supports 3D but the laptop doesn't have a bluray player -.I find that a little.. meh

As far as the rest of the laptop, I can't complain. EVERYTHING else is top of the line and the computer doesn't lag at all, it doesn't matter what task I throw at it. The cooling is amazing as well, I can keep this laptop on my lap and since the laptop has its intake and exhaust through the back I don't have to worry about it overheating. I just thought that for the $1200 it should include a bluray drive and a better quality sound system.

I would definitely recommend this product to others if you're looking for a laptop in this price range.

What can I say, this is a great machine!

Laptop

I agree with the other reviews. This laptop can run every game now on the market. The graphics are amazing and the fps are ok (tested with Starcraft 2 and the Assassin's Creed series).

Anyway, when trying to play GTA 4, although it says in the graphics menu that the resources needed for maximum settings are half the GPU capacity, I get low fps sometimes.

Apart from gamimg, the high ammount of RAM allows you to run multiple programs at the same time without lack of performance. I specially mean 'heavy' programs that I use for the Chemical Engineering career: HYSYS for process simulation, HTRI for heat exchanger design, MATLAB, Origin, Visual Basic, AutoCAD 2D and 3D, etc.

As several people said, the laptop is heavy and has a big butt, but is expectable, as it's one of the newest 15.6 gamimg laptops on the market, and it's designed for heavy gaming and multitasking. For the same reason it's understandable the weight of the battery and the transformer: voltage, current and therefore power have higher values than standard notebooks.

Another thing to note is that this transformer comes with a three-pronged plug. That means that it has a ground prong, not usual on standart notebook transformers. Extra safety to avoid an eventual electric shock.

Mouse

The gaming mouse that comes in the package is the 'ASUS GX800 3200DPI USB Laser Gaming Mouse' you can search it to get more information. It has it's own driver to configure the buttons. The driver comes in a CD or you can download it from the ASUSTeK page.

It's the best mouse I've had, and it's big and comfortable.

Bag

As a picture is worth a thousand words, you can refer to the images I've uploaded and their notes. Click on 'View and share related images' to see all 3.

The bag is nice, with a combination of black, green and grey. It has plenty of pockets and compartiments to store the notebook, its accesories and other stuff you want to carry with you.

The only thing to remark is that the laptop fits tight in the bag, and when you close it, you can notice the edges of the laptop marking the outline of the bag (see the image). Maybe this is not sufficiently safe for the laptop, but you could improvise something to protect more, if you want to. Personally, I won't be carrying the laptop much, and I am very careful with this kind of stuff, so this don't bothers me much.

As a conclusion, I can say that this is the best laptop I've had, and with an excellent price. Also, I want to comment that in my country, the prices of the notebooks are far higher. For the price of this notebok here you can buy a notebook with an i3, 750 GB HDD, 4GB RAM and no gamimg GPU! (taking a LENOVO Z470-8373 as a reference)

If I have something else to add, I will update the comment. Hope it's useful to you!

DELL LATITUDE D600 1.6GHZ 1024MB 40GB CDRW/DVD WIFI XP PRO LAPTOP

DELL LATITUDE D600 1.6GHZ 1024MB 40GB CDRW/DVD WIFI XP PRO LAPTOPI have bought dozens of laptops and this company provides some of the best computers out there. They are just as fast, if not faster than the new ones out there because the company loads these up with the newest RAM, and the latest processors. I would NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER (can't say it enough)buy another new laptop. By the time they are 3 years old, they have to be refurbished anyway.

I ordered a Dell Latitude D600 from this seller...and what a mistake that was...when the computer arrived it was broken! it just came apart..at first the seller was trying to blame me what a joke..I just received the computer..I had to return the computer using my own money which was not cheap for them to find out that it was not assembled right. It took them another twice weeks to send me back another computer all this time I have not computer to work with after I have paid for one.

After two long weeks I get the other computer delivered to me..finally I have a computer that work...so that is what I was thinking...plug it in thinking the power cord work..and my computer went dead...the power cord did not work!! so now I have a computer with no working power cord! I contacted the seller again..and he made me out to be a liar saying it was a new cord (which it was not)and I had to be joking.. he claims he would send me another one out..well that has been since August this is now Oct..and no power cord still to this day the power cord has never arrived..I can't afford to spend even one more penny to send this thing back so its seats in my closet...I have since purchase a new computer which I should have done in the first place.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS SELLER OR YOU WILL BE SORRY YOU DID. Buy new...oh beat this...one more for the road...the "G" key is broken...and its an old computer in maybe ok shape at best..what a waste of time and money...buy new.

This is the first laptop that I purchased from Amazon and am very disappointed. First of all, the battery does not hold the charge, and secondly the vendor said that there is nothing he can do as he claimed that it was tested and found that the battery held it's charge for more than five minutes. I can't return it because it did not come with any warranty and the vendor did not offer other solutions. I am not comfortable buying another laptop from Amazon or recommending others to do.

There are only two issues I had at all with this product. The first is that it lists incorrect RAMI got 512mb not 1024mb, so it can be a bit slower than what I prefer. Also the battery with it needs replacement, but that is normal for a less than new machine. Other than those two points, so far its a pretty darn good machine and an AWESOME deal :) This is my first laptop and I will likely just put a bit more money into it to bring it up to par.

Item functions well as a Dell should. WIFI has good range and speed. Has not frozen up yet. Accepts new MS windows updates with no glitches. All around a superb product for its age and specs. Arrived well without scratches or dents. Good sound system.

HP ProBook 4540s 15.6" Business Notebook PC - C6Z37UT

HP ProBook 4540s 15.6' Business Notebook PC - C6Z37UTI bought this laptop to use as my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). I wasn't looking to spend too much, but I wanted a minimum spec, which this laptop filled. Most important was a dual core processer. The i5 in this machine is plenty powerful enough for my use. I also wanted a 7200rpm hard drive this one has it. I did upgrade the RAM to the full 16GB (an extra $88 in Crucial memory) the machine comes with 4GB and is upgradable to 16GB. That upgrade took all of 1 minute. All in, I spent under $700 for a laptop that could have easily cost $900 or more.

I love the look of this thing. It's big, with a large screen. Might not be a great traveling laptop, but for my needs it is exactly what I want.

Everything arrived in new condition. Fired it up out of the box and installed the updates. NO bloat ware to deal with at all, really. Just some HP tools that you don't need enable. This laptop is clean and PERFECT for my use. No processing issues when recording music I get about 4 or 5ms latency using ASIO drivers I can get similar latency with the WAVE RT driver as well. The Windows rating on this system is 5.9 out of 7.9 which is pretty respectable.

I'm running Mixcraft Pro Studio 6.0, Superior Drummer 2.0 & Melodyne Editor 2 without any hiccups.

I'm extremely pleased with my decision to go with this laptop. Yes, it comes with the Windows 8 upgrade but I'm not touching it! Windows 7 Pro is very stable and what I'm sticking with in this particular instance.

I would recommend this laptop of you're on a budget and looking for performance without a bunch of frills. There's no office productivity software pre-installed so if you're buying this for business purposes make sure you have all of the software you want to run. I'm sure that's one of the reasons the price is so reasonable.

For the home audio enthusiast, this is a great entry point platform for your audio recording and editing needs.

It's a computer laptop. It works as expected. I got this one because I didn't want windows 8, but wanted a decent amount of memory. This gave me the option of sticking with 7 and also gave me a disk I could use to upgrade to windows 8 if I ever feel adventuresome. I like the key board. The keys are raised. There are some features I haven't tried yet. It is light weight. That is a plus. Much faster than my other laptops. The CD/DVD slot is not well designed, is flimsy and is hard to open. Update: It has a strange deal with the mouse. There is a small pin light (not a button) in the left portion of the mouse closest to the monitor. If you touch it by accident the light will come on and your mouse will freeze. The only thing that will make the mouse unfreeze is to tap that light several times. Apparently my other HP laptop is like this as well and I never have been unfortunate enough to accidently press it. Other than several hours of panic, it didn't harm anything. But scared me to have my computer essentially frozen and unable to access my documents.

I like the raised keys on the keyboard. I like how quiet this laptop is. The sound and video are very good. Compared to other laptops I've had it's amazingly quiet.. It's nice and light. My last laptop, an Acer, would get burning hot. Not this one. Thanks to some new technology developed by HP it stays cool, which is a very nice feature. It's fast enough. I tried a Toshiba laptop before I got this one but sent it back because the sound and picture were both terrible, and because I HATED the Windows 8 operating system. I feel very lucky to have found this excellent computer with Windows 7, which I much prefer. I would recommend this laptop.

I have just received my HP ProBook 4540s few hours ago and I have spent some time playing around with it. So, this is only my first impression. I love everything about this laptop so far! I have just returned my $950 sony laptop and got this $600 HP laptop, and I am so happy to do so. This is a really good laptop for students.

I will write more about this laptop in few months, the time for me to go deeper in its features and usage.

By the way, thank you very much to all people who write reviews about products on amazon.com and online sites. 5 stars for the seller TigerDirect, 5 stars for Amazon.com (I sell and buy on Amazon, and I love the way they handle this business), and more than 5 stars for this wonderful laptop. This is not my first laptop. In fact, in the last 4 years, I have own laptops from Dell, Asus, Apple MacBook (which I returned), Samsung, Sony (which I have just returned today). I have also owned an all in one pc from Asus and another from Sony. However, this is my first time to write a review about a pc, this is my first time to like my pc to the point to sit down and share my first impression...

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5087 15.6-Inch Laptop (Trax Texture in Black)

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5087 15.6-Inch LaptopI must say that I have had this product for over a year!!! It works great! I am using it to type this.

I have had a few virus problems but that was MY FAULT for not having it properly secured.

The cord works great, and The battery life on this is pretty good too.

All the connections work and it is great for everyday usage.

The connection on the side where you plug the AC charger is BAD!! Have to wiggle the plug to get it to charge and be careful that you don't bump it or you have to wiggle the cord again. This should not be happening, the laptop is only about 6 months old. This laptop comes with no web-cam. I would not reccomend this laptop to anyone.

Sony VAIO Lifestyle VGN-P688E/G 8-Inch Laptop - Green

Sony VAIO Lifestyle VGN-P688E/G 8-Inch Laptop - GreenMaybe I got a fluke, but Sony's so-called "full laptop" computer in an 8" form factor is like trying to run Vista on your mom's old P3. Seriously, this thing absolutely crawls. All this would be acceptable were it not for the very mediocre battery life (forget 4 hours, I couldn't even manage 2 with moderately heavy use), when any other netbook (that's right, netbook) for well under half the price outperforms it in battery life AND performance. Ironic; the 1.33Ghz processor really is a step down from the 1.66Ghz Atoms in netbooks, despite what I've been told to the contrary about the different "architecture."

But that's just on the hardware front. It powers on fast enough, but right from the get-go you're slammed with loads of bloatware and tons of programs that are slow to load into memory, one after the other (that's right, it's not even a dual core). These can be uninstalled--though not cleanly, as they leave some registry junk data behind. But there's little that can be done about yet another software-related problem: drivers. The video driver on here is one of the worst experiences I've had to date with video displays. HD video was an absolute disaster, even though the chipset (google "Poulsbo" or GMA500) claims it to be able to decode 720p HD video. So when I tried to play a simple HQ youtube vid (not even HD) and met with stuttering far worse than my friend's Asus Eee PC, which cost about 350, I was understandably upset. As for the faster disk drive with the SSD, this may be true. But when you can't run even basic productivity apps at full speed, any HD speed increase was unnoticeable. My Eee for instance has a conventional "slow" HD but gets the job done (except for copying files) much more quickly.

A lot of this might be Vista's fault. But before you think of downgrading to the faster, lighter XP, let me warn you--you'll have even more issues with Sony's drivers. Linux? Forget about it; Intel's Poulsbo drivers are in a pitiful state there too. When the most appealing attribute of the system--the hi-res screen, mind you--is nearly unusable with any other options, one can't help but feel a bit ripped off. The webcam's quality isn't very good (the Eee wins again), and the WWan (mobile broadband) is locked to Verizon, so don't think about other companies unless you "unlock" the chip: more time and trouble. The wireless-N support is supposed to be great, but it was dodgy on my home network (maybe it was just my unit or config...or vista, but again, my other devices worked fine). They keyboard and ergonomics are fine, but again, the only good words for this unit, for this price, are surface-deep.

Parting advice: the reviews on this "Lifestyle PC" are low for good reason. I really wish I'd seen Amazon's reviews earlier. (This unit wasn't from Amazon but from Sony themselves).

I bought this with about $550 couple month ago and have been using it in my business trips.

It is very light weighted and full function PC laptop and it a wonderful device to remote log into the corporate desktop and get some work done.

The preloaded Windows Vista home was a pain and I was able downgrade it to Windows XP, which makes the machine much faster. You can find the entire XP driver set in Sony's online library (the power management part is kind of difficult to figure out......, and I can't find the GPS driver)

The PowerDVD 10 has fully resolved the issue of video playback issue, as it can leverage on the hardware acceleration on the Intel video chip. It can play 720P movie without any difficulty.

Hope this helps.

I purchased this notebook to use as a travel laptop for this purpose, it is great. The display is bright and very legible (after changing the font DPI to 120 dpi). The keyboard is usable (given the size) and the built-in SD card slot comes in handy.

The main problem with this laptop is that it comes with Vista SP1. After updating the SP2, the performance is much better. I also got the Intel developer drivers from their website and used the "Have Disk" procedure to update. Now the graphics have reasonable responsiveness too.

I think I am going to get the extended battery which essentially doubles the battery life.

Overall, having purchased this refurbished for 600, I am happy with it. I will most likely update to Windows 7 to get even better performance. By the way, the Z series ATOM supports hyper-threading which is almost 2x the perfomance similar to a dual core.

I wish SONY/INTEL would release a graphics driver that took full advantage of the dual stream capability of the GMA500 PowerVR graphics chipset.

For Linux, try the Linux JoliCloud Netbook distro .

I like Sony product overall, but this product was not too impress at all. I purhcased this 2 week ago, with 2 extra battery, travel bag, external VGA/Cat-5 network adapter (since I am traveling a lots and need a small notebook to do my work while traveling). Upon receive, it looks very cool, small and liteweight, but after use it, I am kind of disappoint, it is SLOW ( may be I get used to my 14.1 2.0G CPU, vs of this Atom slow CUP, for sure is slow). I know I can not return it, so I am planning to sell on eBay with discount, it can not really do my works at all (my wife is upset with me to only useit for few days and few hundred off to sell on ebay). I guess the Windows Vista Home and netbook CPU(Atom) is the main reason make it slow, most netbook come with XP (take less memory).

Also, the display text is too small to read(but it display all content within this high res. small LCD, make sense), I have to set text font to 150%, but compare to my regular notebook 14.1 notebook still small. I would say, overall, this notebook can funcion as checking email and browse internet and looks cool, if you need a very small notebook and not too worry about speed and storage space for your daily simple works, this is good one.

by the way, key board size and battery life is pretty good, I like it.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW240F/T 15.5-Inch Brown Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Sony VAIO VGN-NW240F/T 15.5-Inch Brown LaptopAfter replacing my 8 year old Dell Laptop, I looked into this Vaio upon the recommendation of a few friends. I'm not a tech-guy by any stretch, just wanted a solid everyday home laptop with good memory for interent, Itunes, Quickbooks, Skype and some word processing (no gaming) and this laptop absolutely fit the bill! Solid construction, unique and appealing design (case texture is great, shows no fingerprints), comfortable, wide and spacious keyboard, lightning fast-start up and downloads, user-freindly, gorgeous Hi-Def screen, great for watching videos and DVD's, fast CD and DVD burner and an awesome camera for Skyping with friends and family. For the price (just a shy over $600) and complete with Windows 7, you can't beat it! Battery life is fine too. Unlike some complaints, mine gets just under 3 hours which suits my needs and also charges very fast. I've had freinds that have owned Vaio's years with little to no problems, and now glad to own one myself. If you're looking for a rock solid laptop with style and function, get this one. I'm happy I made this purchase, would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

This is my third Vaio laptop, and while this brand is pricier than its competition, I'm very happy with this computer (and its older sibs, both of which still work).

Physically, this isn't a tiny netbook. At 6 pounds, it's not something I'm going to be schlepping on airplanes, but that isn't what I bought it for. As always, the Vaio screen is lovely and bright, and widescreen. The ports seem to be well-placed. And the aesthetics are quite nice -it's a brushed, fingerprint-resistant silver. It's really quite fast (no choking or hard drive whirring while loading programs, etc.) and it's extremely quiet. They keyboard took a little while to adapt to, but it's nice and roomy, with space between the keys. The touchpad works well, and the DVD drive is also smooth and quiet. The HDMI port works as it should with my LCD tv.

I haven't tested battery life as I don't plan to use this as an on-the-go machine.

I didn't know much of what to expect from Windows 7, and while this isn't a Windows 7 review, it works smoothly on this machine. Most of my Windows XP software works, with a few exceptions.

As usual, Sony packs in way too much preinstalled crap on their laptops, and I really wish they wouldn't, but I guess that's the price of buying a machine like this. I do wish they'd include a disc to let you install this stuff, rather than requiring that you uninstall it. Surprisingly though, Google Chrome is one of the preinstalled programs, so it is good to have a decent browser right out of the box. One thing Sony doesn't include much of at all is written documentation. Other than a tiny Getting Started booklet, all the documentation is on the machine itself.

Overall, I'm pleased with this computer so far. For the price, you are getting a near-desktop replacement that happens to be a laptop.

The best thing about this laptop is that it "feels like a good computer." Nowadays the guts of a computer are standard enough, so it is the aesthetics now that differentiate.

The body is "textured", so fingerprints and smudges don't show up; it still looks like new. There is no "ten key" keypad on the keyboard, which means that the keys are spaced with just a bit more room to make typing more comfortable. The keys themselves have a solid feel, and no rattle or wiggle. The touchpad is also texturized, not too glassy.

The screen is bright and crisp, a joy for watching movies. The "one touch web access without booting up" feature is nice, so it can act like my iphone I suppose -easy to quickly check email without having to power it all up.

I've used it while plugged in and on battery power, and it stays cool enough to rest on my bare legs.

The extra junk software about which others complain -just wipe out and reinstall the operating system before using it; the free stuff won't re-appear.

PROS:

Textured body, solid keyboard, crisp screen. Good overall tactile "feel."

CONS:

A bit heavier than others.

Overall, its a good product. It is my second VAIO, my work laptop is a Dell, and I've had WINBOOK and HP in the past too. So far, SONY appears to consistenly make a good product that stands up to wear and tear. I would recommend this laptop to friends!!

A little bit of background before I sing the praises of my new laptop!

My 4-and-a-half-year old Toshiba XP laptop "died" last week, despite one or two "revivals." So the hunt for a new laptop was on. (I'm still trying to revive it, because it was working fine until it started into an endless cycle of safe mode and never opened. Need to find an XP system disc. Never had because software comes loaded.)

At a minimum, I wanted at least 3 USB ports, one HDMI and the "usual suspects" (4GB Ram, hard drive not all that important as I no longer want to keep ANYTHING on a system drive!) and card readers, CD/DVD drive (but that was optional if the unit was lite enough to use as netbook).

As someone who has had several Toshiba laptops that performed well and which I liked for their great screens and keyboards--and sound, I started with those models. I found one with generally strong reviews (except for a critical area), the 135-1310 (1309 retail version at best buy). I wanted to love it. It was heavy with features but lite in weight and size, enough so that one could use it as netbook.

But I had read the reviews and folks complained about the touchpad and the buttons. So, I headed to Best Buy for some on-site testing. Yea. All those folks? They were correct. I could not picture myself using it without going mad and getting carpal tunnel. (Yes you can use an external mouse but I don't want to buy something that doesn't work "as is"). Plus the thing was in this icky, shiny (glared in my eyes!), horrible material and style. (Young kids looking at it hated it, too!)

I had set a price point of around $599, slightly higher if it had bluetooth (but then you can always add for like $40 bucks via USB).

Checked gateway, HP and compaq laptops. Checked the Asus, althought they did not have the U30 models with long battery life. But from the models on floor, I wasn't in love with design or keyboards. So many options, but Too this, not enough that, etc. Or "Love it but WHOA, the price!) (Think City Girl and the dozens of computers). Finally, saw a Sony--this model VGN-NW240 (in the "brown" color).

Now, I've always lusted after them but deemed them too pricey for the features. However, after despairing of the other models, I tried the lowest priced one ($649--which was the lowest price anywhere, and $50 more than I was budgeting). I know, because you can go online at Best Buy and check prices elsewhere. Smart move best buy. Cause you ended up with a buyer and I almost ALWAYS order from Amazon or )

FYI: For $50 more, at $699 on Dec 2, you got it in the really great looking brushed aluminum (or whatever) silver, with a DVD that played Blue-Ray discs. Didn't need that and was not gonna spend $50 just to "look pretty" (Oh, it is sexy! Not as slim as those gorgeous Macs, but close enough.)

THe "Chiclet" keyboard rocked (I do a LOT of typing and though I have several external keyboards, I want a laptop that I can use on the fly "as is") and since it had the specs I wanted (including a great feature that has one-touch net access without booting up--Love it), and the strong, clean design (no more glaring, cheap, shiny black and metal!) paired with its features and price made it my new "love."

It's only been two days, but some initial comments.

* Sound: Not crazy about the sound quality. But I have external speakers and when I travel, I always have my own earbuds. So no real problem there.

* Loving Windows 7 so far, but still (despite a driver download) cannot get my Brother laser printer to work. Haven't loaded all my old software yet, but so far, for major stuff, no problems.

* I will never be a fan of having all the connections on the sides of a computer. Looks ugly (I have lots of stuff) but until/if I buy a docking unit, it's staying that way.

* HDMI and VGA connections. I don't even know if you can run two connections (VGA to an external monitor; HDMI to my LCD TV) simultaneously, BUT you don't have the option with this unit because you cannot physically plug in both at the same time. The VGA plug would overlap the HDMI. DOn't know if this is accidental or a true design flaw.

I just care that the HDMI runs (have to try it this weekend) as we watch a lot of stuff via online and having it stream to the TV...hey, it's one reason we bought this more expensive laptop. You can get almost all the same features, excluding HDMI, for about $150 less on other laptops.

I'm never gonna love the "brown" color, but it will really NOT show dirt or fingerprints. And the textured surface is great. (I'm kinda glad it isn't the sleeker finish as it might attract too much attention. THe kind you don't want.)

Can't speak to battery life yet, but I can say that although I've had a lot of experience with laptops, I had to spend several minutes to get the battery installed. Do this carefully folks, or you could damage it by forcing it. It's not as simple, easy to slip in as all my other laptops.

FYI: Although I had not owned a Sony, in checking the reliability rates, Sony was third (after Asus and Toshiba) in terms of % of repairs over three years.

Can't speak to their customer service quality as I haven't needed just yet. The setup was simple.

A CON to me:

* The guide is online only. No print version and really only a one-page basic "connection" bit.

And no system disks of any kind.

I'm old-fashioned. Give me some "hard" stuff straight up.

So far, great movie (via net) and CD on the screen. Need to test Netflix Instant Viewing next.

Overall, this is great value for the money with a strong brand.

And anyone who really types a lot, this IS the keyboard for you. Seriously.

This is a great computer but before you buy you need to realize a few things:

(a) The Intel graphics media accelerator is not up to the quality of the rest of the computer nor is it close to graphics accelerator boards. If you play graphics intensive programs, beware!

(b) My unit was shipped without controlling software for the integrated camera and Sony technical support was not able to help, since Windows 7 would not allow installation of their controller software.

(c) Big BEWARE. This is a 64-bit system. If you have older programs that are 16-bit, or even if they are 32-bit but the installer is 16-bit, they will NOT run on your system. I ran into this problem with several programs that ran fine under 32-bit Vista. 16-bit progams do not run under 64-bit windows.

As I said, great computer so far but significant issues that any buyer needs to be aware of!!!

HP Pavilion DV6-7000 15.6" 1080p Anti-Glare Quad HYBRID series, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge GD

HP Pavilion DV6-7000 15.6' 1080p Anti-Glare Quad HYBRID series, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge GDDR5 Nvidia Gaming Laptop in Midnight Black DV6TJust received my new DV6-7014nr (not DV6-7000 as shown on the website) and I am amazed with this machine. For half the price of a Retina display MacBook Pro, you get a machine that meets or beats every aspect of the Apple. If you want to pay for the Apple logo, get the MacBook. If you want serious value for your money, get the HP DV6-7014nr. The July, 2012 issue of Consumer Reports rates it higher than the MacBook Pro (an $1,800 Samsung was number 1, HP DV6-7014nr #2 and MacBook Pro #3). Only one problem with this computer It will not hook up to 5G wireless, only 2.4 and lower. If this is important to you, go with some other machine or custom build the DV6-7000t at the HP website to include a wireless card that hooks up to 5G. Be prepared to pay a bit more money to purchase a custom order direct from HP, plus a couple of weeks (or more) to receive it from them.

Note: This is not exactly the same laptop, but the closest one I could find on Amazon. The processor, video, display, and keyboard all appear to be the same.

When I got this computer, I was looking for a laptop I could use for on-site software development. It has exceeded expectations in almost every way. Here is a breakdown of the components I chose and a few notes:

* i7-3610QM Processor: This processor does nearly as well as my desktop i7-2600k.

* NVIDIA 650M w/2GB: I am able to play Skyrim on Ultra settings. So far every game I have wanted to play has worked very well.

* 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive w/ 32GB mSSD: I have this on my desktop as well and as a result boot times and app start up seem faster. This is very subjective.

* 6 cell + 9 cell Battery: The 6 cell battery sits flush with the bottom of the laptop. The 9 cell battery protrudes from the bottom forming a stand of sorts.

* 15.6" Full HD display (1920 x 1080): This is one of the best displays I have seen on a laptop. It is hard to find a full HD display on a 15" laptop these days. I love the matte finish because it doesn't reflect everything behind you. It is crisp and bright.

* HP TrueVision HD Webcam: This is a run-of-the-mill camera, but works well.

* Backlit Keyboard: This is a must for use during presentations or in dark areas. It took me awhile to find the fn-f5 combination to turn it on.

Here are the Windows Experience performance scores:

Processor: 7.6

Memory: 7.6

Graphics: 7.1

Gaming Graphics: 7.1

Primary HDD: 5.9

I have high expectations and this computer has delivered.

UPDATE: Bought this laptop January 21, 2013 and on April 1st it crashed. I've spent the last five days, about 20+ hours, talking with India and the Philippines HP technical support call centers about this machine. First it was to blame Windows and to back-up and do a total system restore. Then the restore partition is to blame because of Microsoft, and then after waiting for a Fed Ex of 3 System Recovery DVDs and ran those and then got another "blue screen of death" about memory, ran another diagnostic and the memory is bad. Last THREE HOURS on three calls with HP and they will now send a box to pick this expensive boat anchor up and in 2-3 weeks I MAY have a working system back. Oh, I paid $350 for the premier HP care pack with in-house repair, but they think it's the actual machine and not the chip, so why waste another five days to get someone out to fix what will need to go back anyways.

I bought a $2K laptop in 2005 from HP and in 2 years it was replaced four (4) times... this is an eery and familiar situation I am in with HP once again...

Stuck with a $1,100 machine, $350 premier warranty and a broken turd of a notebook that I may get back in 2-3 weeks. UGH!

I've had this laptop for only about 24 hours and I've grown to love it! The 2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA Graphics card plays every game I've thrown at it on MAX settings at 40+ FPS (using Fraps). Every category of the Windows Experience Index is 7.0 + except for the Hard Drive which is only at a 5.9 (you can upgrade to SSD if you want a maxed out Laptop). Statistically speaking, this is one of the most powerful laptops on the market right now. I highly recommend it to every Tech Geek/Gamer/Laptop Enthusiast out there.

A few pros and cons I've noted

Sony VAIO E17 Series SVE17125CXB 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO E17 Series SVE17125CXB 17.3-Inch LaptopLaptop arrived from Amazon 2 days earlier than first suggested, so I was very happy about that. Arrived with out a ding on the box. Great shape.

Got this two days ago. My first impression was I was horrified how cheap it looked. I was afraid to break it lifting it from the box. The body is just cheap thin plastic. It seemed to bend dangerously on the bottom just being held. The black color of the case is an ugly flat black, the whole finish is a gigantic finger print magnet.

It looks better with the cover up. The keyboard keys are a hair too small, but spaced good. I am very picky on keyboards, and it's been tolerable. I adore the back light on the keyboard as I often type in dark to dim rooms, it's great. I also keep the laptop plugged in usually so a short battery life won't bother me. I think it's about 2 hours something with the back-lighting.

Before I bought it I worried a lot about the off set touch pad due to the full number keypad. It hasn't bothered me. The touch pad can be hyper sensitive, readjusting the screen size on you. You just have to get comfortable on what it tolerates and lift your fingers a bit.

Cd players has worked well for programs installs.

The speed of the laptop is great coming from an i5 Sony Vaio, I can see the difference. Wifi works great. All ports I have tested so far are working well.

The laptop has remained cool to the touch after a full day of use. I'm not a gamer, I can just say the worst loading web pages actually opened fast and I've had about 18 programs open, nothing barfed.

I love the large screen size, have not watched a ton of video yet, but what little a saw I was some what surprised it didn't look as good as the 13 inch Sony Vaio we have. I'll update when I use that more, not being fair to evaluate it this early on when I am busy with so much else.

Laptop over all, outside the cheapness of the case I really like. I'd give it a 5 if not for the case.

Windows 8 is fast and a lot of useless eye candy. I like the operating system's speed, don't like the interface so I am busy customizing it. It seemed overwhelming yesterday, but much better today. It was effortless to set up the WiFi and Bluetooth and such. I guess I feel the same way about Windows 8 as I do the laptop. Great inside, hate the outside.

I am a IT manager in México City, in my last travel to USA I buy this laptop.

I was scared od the comments about the lack of turbo boost, I think are trolls, because mine have activated it and is used a lot!!! ( I have it 80% of thime over the 3 GHZ)

Recently made a upgrade, replacing the main HD whit a new SDD (256 MB SEAGATE) and let the original HD in a especial tray, in place of the DVD drive, I also buy a case to make the DVD drive external, so I can use it with an USB cable.

This is by far the best laptop I ever see (and use of course), I run badass things of my work, an takes all like nothing, even with databases (SQL SERVER).

I recommend it for non 3D graphics use, I have 3D games on it, but is not a gamer laptop, outside of the 3D graphics, you get a beast, and worth every penny.

.

I have been using the laptop for two weeks now. This is an excellent laptop for the price.

Note it has the i7 processor, not the i5 processor, so be careful when comparing prices with similar models.

Hardware

The laptop's 17.3 inch screen is great and provides excellent quality video and text images.

I also use the Laptop's VGA output to connect an external monitor to my laptop and extend my laptop so I have two displays going at once. Easy to setup, by the way, if you have never done this (you can setup the external video to display the same image displayed on the laptop (copy) or you can "extend" your screen so that you basically double your screen size. Such feature is a Windows feature and can be done on any laptop with a windows OS) The E17's VGA video output is very nice and works well with the external monitor.

The system is fast even when accessing the 750 G hard Drive. While my E17 system uses an old school spinning hard drive (as compared to memory chips) the access times are acceptable and not an issues. And you get 750 gig of storage for half the price.

I do not play games so I do not know how the system would handle gaming.

WEB SURFING

Web surfing is fast. In fact, my ACER laptop (not that old, spilled water on it and had to replace it) would only connect to my 30 Mbps internet at 10 Mbps (wireless). The Acer access was consistently 10 Mbps and I tried everything in software to up the speed with no luck. Assumed it was the distance from the router. However, the VAIO E17 connects at 25 to 30 Mbps (wireless). No hassles at all, it just worked from moment one (after setting up the network of course).

KEYBOARD

Love the look and feel of the keyboard. It does not feel cheap and is back-light which is nice when in darker environments . . . looks cool all the time.

MOUSE PAD

Combination mouse and mouse pad: I have never used the laptop style mouse pads on any computer that I have ever used and the E17 is no exception. I don't dislike mouse pads I simply do not prefer them. I connect an external mouse up to my systems. I have tried the various interface devices but none beat the traditional external mouse for me.

WINDOWS 8 SOFTWARE

At first, was not too thrilled about the system coming with Windows 8.

Well, at the moment, I like Windows 8 and I like the way the VAIO E17 works with Windows 8 using an external mouse.

I described Windows 8 as follows. You can have the NEW Windows 8 User Interface (UI) and the old Windows 7 (and earlier) UI and it is easy to switch between the two (and I often do). You will find yourself using both all the time.

Basically, in what I call the Windows 8 UI, you have what I call a first screen and a second screen. The first screen assumes you will be connected with the internet all the time so it displays lots of "touch buttons" that launch internet based Applications (such as the APPs one might typically find on a smartphone Restated, "Apps" are software stored on the internet, and thus, you have to have internet access to use them). There are some really nice APPS one can put on this screen and I suspect the list is only going to be bigger.

Of course you can also put "touch buttons" that launch software installed on your hard drive (what I call "local software" as such software is not on the internet it is installed "locally" on your computer hard drive).

Then there is a second Windows 8 UI screen that shows a list of much smaller "touch buttons" for all the APPs AND Local Software you have installed on your computer and they are sorted nicely.

Then you have what I call the old School Windows 7 and older screen which is simply the old Windows 7 screen showing all the buttons for launching the software installed on your computer. No "App" buttons are put here.

So one does not need to use the old school Windows 7 UI; but I still like the old Windows 7 UI for "local software".

It is simple to switch between the different screes (UIs). . . just let the mouse "hover" in the bottom left corner of the screen and a pop-up windows appears that you click on to switch between UI screens.

MOUSE

Using the external Mouse in Windows 8 is PERFECT for me. It works well and I have no problems at all. AS I a sure you know, Windows 8 is designed to work with "touch screens" so you can launch programs by touching the "touch buttons" for a particular program. I do not like this idea. I don't like anyone touching my computer screen and getting nasty finger prints on the screen. I use a mouse and it works great. Of course keeping up with an external mouse is more of a pain but I like it better.

BOTTOM LINE

The VAIO E17 works perfectly with Windows 8 even without a touch screen and with its "small" touch pad . . . if one uses an external mouse. I use the touch pad some, but not much, but the touch pad works well also. Restated, the touch pad is not an issue for me (some do not like its small size).

The 750 gigabyte hard drive is fast enough and does not make a sound.

The i7 processor is quick.

The system is quite.

The keyboard is good quality and back-light

The 17.3 inch Video is great, one of the best I have seen on a laptop. The VAIO video is noticeably better than the ACER video on my 2 year old computer (same size screen but the ACER only cost $500 whereas the VAIO cost $800).

The external VGA video is great.

Internet (WiFi wireless) is very fast and easy to setup. The VAIO must have a higher quality WiFi receiver compared to my old ACER (2 years old) as my new VAIO connects at over twice the speed as my ACER for the same distance from the transmitter/router (and I know how to configure networks and wireless systems so the difference was not in the setup).

All WiFi receivers are not the same and the lower the quality of the WiFi receiver the closer you have to be to the router to get a faster connections compared to a better quality WiFi receiver.

Battery life: unknown I am always connected to power (so far).

Toshiba Satellite L855D-S5242 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mercury Silver)

Toshiba Satellite L855D-S5242 15.6-Inch LaptopThis the 3rd Toshiba Laptop that I have bought for my household! The 1st one was 18 months ago, the 2nd for my daughter for x'mas and this last one for myself! When I was looking at computers I wanted fast, memory, and storage. The L855D-S5242 delivered on all accounts. Getting started was simple and I was up and running via WI-FI in less than 30 minutes! The Fn keys, which also serve to adjustment various operating parameters is really slick! Screen brightness, Speaker Vol, >> the player all via the Fn keys! I prefer the Numeric Keypad on the computer and there is plenty of room. Actually, the keyboard is not much different than a full size keyboard. Having large hands and fingers I don't have any problem moving about the keys while typing. The keys have a soft, yet deliberate feel to them, almost a very soft click! It's not a super small laptop and it's not the larger one that I bought for my daughter but I find it perfect for traveling and connecting to WIFIs. I give this 5 stars! If it had one drawback it would be lack of software installed. It's got all the basics and I guess Microsoft stopped putting Microsoft Works on with Windows 7. I would thing this is their push for folks to purchase MS Word! I would definitely purchase another.

Pros:

Decent Performance

Beautiful screen

Cons:

Battey life

Screen is much too reflective for outdoor use

Sound

Summary:

I use this mostly use this as a replacement for my previous desktop which quit working on me. It offers comparable preformance to my last PC. It gets a 5.9 on the windows experience index (held back by hard disk write speed). The 6gb of ram is great for a mobile device. I don't play many PC games but in my experience it runs minecraft smoothly, granted that's not saying much. On average I get about 5 hours of constant use before I really start needing a charger.

Also, the speakers on this rig are HORRIBLE. Everything comes out bizarrely squeaky and hollow sounding. This isn't a problem for me because I have it hooked up to my surround sound speakers.

All in all, it's a decent machine but there's better out there.

Had to upgrade laptop for my work and wanted something that could still handle entertainment and basic gaming duties while on the road. Windows performance index score is 5.9, but only due to the slow hard drive that comes with the laptop. All other components are rated a 6.7, except the ram which is a 7.3. Screen is very good with crisp text and vivid colors. Have played several FPS and racing games and haven't had any issues. Used the HDMI out to watch videos in a hotel and it was perfect. Ordered a Samsung SSD to install which will take care of the slow index and expect this computer to perform even better. All of my work is done virtually so the WIFI has gotten a workout and hasn't had any issues. Wish that they would have put a dual band adapter in the system but it is only a 2.4 ghz. There is no Bluetooth and it does not have the antennas to add one internally, already had a dongle so I just plug it in when I need to use Bluetooth. One thing I noticed and didn't like was that there is no locking clasp for the display, it must use a magnetic or other internal sensor to detect the lid being opened and closed. I had the option enabled to turn the computer on when the screen is opened and somehow it did this in my bag while traveling. Really am enjoying this laptop.

I was looking for Windows 7 and upgrade ability of the RAM to 16 GB and found it with this great laptop. As a new insurance agent I was told Windows 8 won't work with the software in the business. This is one quick and powerful machine. Thanks Toshiba and Amazon.

Do not buy Toshiba. Screen just all of a sudden cracked. Bought from Best Buy and they refused to even look at it because they said Toshiba was the only company that would not accept them sending it. Toshiba wanted to deal directly with the customer. Toshiba won't replace or fix even though it was within warranty. Spent a LOT of time on the phone trying to get them to fix my computer and they said the warranty does not cover a cracked screen no matter what. Horrible computer, even worse customer service.

Lenovo Ideapad Z570 1024AMU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Gun Metal Grey)

Lenovo Ideapad Z570 1024AMU 15.6-Inch LaptopHad this laptop for a few days now and I love it! Its super fast, lightweight and beautiful design. I really like the keyboard. The individual letters are spread out. Only complaint to the keyboard is the enter and backspace button is little small and the left arrow is right next to the 0 which is annoying at times. I couldn't believe the price for 6GB memory 500GB RAM and i5 processor. Comparing price vs. features, Lenovo beats the competition. I've had a HP for 3 years, which broke on me, and switching over to Lenovo was the best decision I've made.

I purchased this laptop from Costco about 5 months ago. I purchased no extra warranty or any of that stuff. My general laptop-mantra is that it should only last you 2 years or so before changing to a better laptop... have to keep up with the rapidly improving industry if finances allow.

I'll start with the specs I purchased this laptop with:

i5 processor, 8 gig ram, 750 gb hard drive, no dedicated graphics card, windows 7 home

It's a pretty standard build, and for around 600 bucks, I was able to snag it from Costgo.

This is my computer that took place of my mid2009 macbook pro with 4 gb ram and intel core 2 duo + 250 gb hard drive...

I have to say that Lenovo made a solid build with this computer. It trucks through almost everything I've thrown at it! Keep in mind, this is not a gaming laptop, nor is it a heavy duty desktop replacement. Nor is it an ultraportable. It's just a 15.6 inch screen laptop with a bit of heft (but every port you could want/need) and with decent specs, it's just a really solid all-around laptop. You can find out more information on the usage and all that stuff from other reviews.

I simply wrote this to say that the product is pretty solid. One thing I will say though...about 5 months in, my motherboard fried but Lenovo offered to fix it completely for free. So really big kudos to them! Especially since my warranty was due to expire 2-3 days before they fixed it. So I'm really happy that the process went smoothly. I will say that the phone call took an hour, but it helped that I had a really nice guy from Costco keep me company while I was waiting...but that's to be expected since my Macbook Pro took 3 days to fix entirely with a similar problem (and you have to go through hordes of customers at the Genius Bar @ NYC where I'm from). So in that regard, I didn't really mind the 1 hour phone call and the mailing in of my computer.

I think I'll cling to this computer for about another year before I get a better one, but for the price...nothing beats it.

Should not be writing a review when full of anger and frustration. This laptop was a Christmas present but by Valentine's Day it was dead. It will not boot up. Appears that power supply is fine because the power bar is lighted (amber color)

What is infuriating is the type of "customer support" I received. Raja S. (who refused to give me his last name) needs extensive training in customer support and technical troubleshooting.

He mocked me when I could not locate the tiny button he said I needed to hold along with the power button, "You have to hold them for one minute."

After a minute transpired, (I actually thought we were disconnected because of the dead air on his end), I informed him that nothing happened. The laptop is still not booting up.

He said, "You have to hold the buttons for 3-5 minutes."

WHAT?!?!?

Fortunately I had two other family members with me so we took turns holding the buttons while we watched for the 5 minutes to be up.

After that Raja S. said we have to send the laptop back to the Depot and we have to pay for one way shipping. What?? No RMA# he said no.

He also said we would have to pay if they find out the laptop is damaged. Ummm.. We already paid $599. for this paperweight.

When gathering my information, Raja was not very helpful in soliciting my contact information. Again, dead air. I could not tell if he was ready for my information or not or even if he hung up on me.

I finally asked, "Hello Raja are you there?"

He got snippy and said, "I am waiting for your address not just the street where you live."

I finally flipped out at him about this whole experience. I work in customer service and would probably be given a strong reprimand if I treated my customers as I was treated.

He proceeded to put me on hold from 16 minutes.

I will never purchase another Lenovo product again based on both the reliability of the product and the lack of customer support. This is the first time I ever had a computer or laptop die after such a short period of time and this is also the first time I called a "help desk" and spoke with someone so apathetic.

Worst customer service I have ever received in my life. I bought an Idea pad laptop and it kept crashing on me. After hours on the phone they offered to fix it if I paid for the shipping. I sent the thing in twice and they replaced the hard drive twice. Pretty dumb if you ask me. Each time they claimed they tested it and claimed that it worked but the computer was still crashing. After two months of waiting for a working computer I sent it to a local computer repair shop and they fixed it with a higher voltage power supply. Lenovo refused to pay because they said it was a software issue and software is excluded in the warranty. Lenovo is a company that does not care about their customers or the quality of the product. Someone really should do something because this is just not right.

I see lots of complaints about this laptop, I purchased mine from office max not amazon, but I have had it over two years now with no problems at all. It always boots up fast, it works well with word, it has a been a great cheap laptop. I have never had to deal with customer service, but I can say it's still going strong I'm using it to type up this review. I'm not sure why so many people are having issues with it booting up I have never had this problem.

ASUS K55A-XH51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

ASUS K55A-XH51 15.6-Inch LaptopI received this afternoon. Perfect condition. By the way you will receive this with Windows 7 Pro not windows 8 as pictured. In the write up it says Windows 7 professional but shows picture of computer with windows 8 on it. I did not want the 8 and this is the reason I bought it before it was sold out. I hooked up to my wired network downloaded Nortonthen downloaded all my windows 7 updates , changed it to internet explorer 10 and even hooked it up to my Epson wireless printer. It was perfect effortlessly with no error messages at all. Extremely fast browsing downloaded pictures and videos from old computer using usb flash drive to this computer. Perfect. Very quiet computer. You can barely hear it . Sound is good. So happy I bought this . I am just a housewife. No computer expert at all. This computer walks you through it. With the windows 7pro it is easy to add another computer to your home network. Excellent screen resolution. Watched a movie on line. HD clarity. This met more than my expectations!

After multiple bad experiences with HP laptops, I vowed never again. Have now purchased my 3rd Asus laptop this year one for me, one for the wife and one for the kids. The last 2 have both been the model listed here, although unfortunately from another vendor (Newegg) where I ended up paying $50 more per unit than current Amazon price.

I really like Asus laptops and have found them easy to setup/use and very reliable. I noticed one reviewer complaining about the touchpad sensitivity, which perhaps results from that person not having adjusted the touchpad settings to his/her personal preference. I also found the factory default touchpad settings a bit hyper, but it was very simple to adjust settings.

This laptop has a maximum memory of 8GB with 2 memory slots, one of which comes empty from factory, so I also purchased a 4GB memory upgrade for this laptop (approx $40). Product ordered was: Kingston 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory Model KVR16S11/4; works great!

I, like others, tried out Windows 8 on demo laptops at local retailers (only Windows they had available) and really hated it. So I was happy to find this laptop still available with Windows 7.

If you are put off by fingerprints on exterior, it is worth mentioning that the top of this unit is not the fingerprint-hiding textured surface as depicted in photos, instead it is a typical smooth surface. No big deal for me.

I have had this machine a little more than 2 weeks. From the beginning, there have been start-up and shut down failures. Asus has guided me through multiple hard resets and BIOS resets and now says I probably have a virus. One of the first things I did when I turned on the machine was to install and update Kaspersky. Kaspersky has never found a virus, trojan, network attack, etc., etc., etc. The resets are now a daily occurrence. I told the support fellow that the Windows 7 backup fails after the first DVD, but they are "not able to help with backup." If I had purchased this laptop from BEST BUY, I could simply walk in and exchange it within 30 days---with no questions asked. Amazon wants a 15% restocking charge to restock a defective laptop. I rely on Amazon as my first option for many items, both business and personal, but never again will I buy a laptop from Amazon.

Title says it all. I need a reliable machine and this is not it.

Everything feels cheap about this laptop. Keys, hypersensitive cursor, feel of plastic God knows what's inside.

After one day (and the expense of downloading Office), the machine has totally frozen up. I can't even force shut-down.

I try to get Asus tech support and they're nearly impossible to contact. I finally sent a note to them after their online 'chat' prompt said they'd be right with me and thanking me for my patience....for 45 minutes. The response to the note said they'd be back in touch in 48 hours.

HP Pavilion dv6-3019wm Phenom II Dual-Core N620(2.8) 4G 500G DVD±R/RW 15.6 Win7 Laptop - Black

HP Pavilion dv6-3019wm Phenom II Dual-Core N620(2.8) 4G 500G DVD±R/RW 15.6 Win7 Laptop - BlackBefore this laptop, I had a DV6 laptop I recieved as a present, 4 years ago. Unfortunately that laptop suffered major overheating issues which cause frequent freezes, and friend my sound card last year, and eventually made me unable to start my laptop up, about a month ago.

Ever since last summer when I first laid my eyes upon the black cherry dv6-3019wm at a walmart, I just knew I had to purchase it. It was like love first at sight. I loved the color, and the overall design. 2 weeks ago, I finally purchased it via ebay, and I am satisfied!

Specs wise, its enough to meet my standards. 500GB is more than enough harddrive space for me.The processor and graphics card are alright. 4GB RAM and 2.8GHZ dual core processor, makes it blazing fast at multi-tasking with programs and watching videos, especially with lots of tabs open on an internet browser. The graphics card is 4250 Radeon Its not a gaming laptop by any means, and it probably can't handle very graphic intensive and advanced 3D video editing programs well, but it gets the job done with most of the basic stuff. I tried canyourunit.com, and I found out that I could play starcraft 2 at minimum/low settings at best (but not recommended settings), but I couldn't play call of duty black ops (though I could play the previous call of duty games) due to the processor not being good enough apparently. From what I've heard, this laptop is as good as an entry level i3 330 laptop in terms of processor performance. It comes at a very good price though, and I'm surprised it comes with 4GB of RAM and 500GB harddrive size. It also has some shortcut keys to instantly access the internet, printer, or calculator. It took some time at first to get used to, because I'm used to the CTRL button to be on the left most part of the keyboard.

Really, the only other cons I can list of, is that the touchpad takes some time getting used to. Its a multi touch track pad that lets you zoom in and out and scroll pages up and down with certain motions. What annoys me though is that the multi-touch features can occasionally interfere when I simply want to use it for the pointer. I'd highly recommend just buying a wireless mouse and using that instead. Luckily, you can turn off the touch pad, by double taping on the white circle on the top left of the touchpad.

Finally, if you're considering on purchasing this laptop, you should know that the battery life lasts about 3 hours with wifi on.

Overall

Pros

+Very sleek sexy design

+Keypad is incredibly comfortable. Great buttons!

+4GB RAM and 500GB harddrive space is more than enough for most people's needs

+processor and graphics cards (along with the 4 GB RAM)gets most of the basic multitasking jobs done. Can web browse and watch HD videos at ease.

+great price

+fairly quiet and doesn't overheat easily

+relatively portable due to its somewhat thin design and its weight of 5.5lbs.

Cons

-multi-track touchpad gets some getting used to, and can interfere with regular use of the mouse pointer. It can be turned off though. I recommend purchasing a wireless mouse.

-Not a gaming laptop, or one that demands a lot of graphical power (such as advanced 3D editing software) by any means. You won't be able to play some of the latest high end popular PC games at recommended and higher settings due to limitations from graphics card and processor

-battery life is around 3hrs MAX, with wifi on. I'm fine with this for the most part, since I'm not going to take it with me everywhere I go, but its annoying that the manufacturers never listed the battery life on any site with the rest of tech specs. I guess I can see why?

Overall, if you're looking for a laptop for general use (web browsing, watching videos, etc), it will be more than enough to handle most software. If you're a gamer looking to play games like Call of Duty Black Ops, or Starcraft 2 under recommended or higher settings, or using 3D editing software that uses lots of processing power and demands a lot, graphically, consider looking for computers with i5 or i7 processors and a graphics card that is at least ATI HD Radeon 5000 and up (w/ 1GB?).

Great general use laptop overall!

4.5/5 for my overall needs

I got this laptop for college. It's has a 15.6 inch screen and the display is beautiful!

I thought it would be a bit bulky and heavy, but it's not. I mean, it's not the MOST portable,

but it's perfect for me. 5 pounds isn't a lot for such a powerful PC. The quick access keys are

great. It was weird having them on the keyboard, but I adjusted just fine. The keyboard is comfortable

& responsive. The trackpad gets a little funky at times, but overall it's not bad. Oh & I love the HP

Mediasmart gallery and the quick access to Pandora radio. The webcam is one of my favorite features.

It has so many fun features! I'm on the laptop now and it's great! I LOVE this laptop!

First an annoyance the fan frequently cycles on and off even though it sits on a table top in an air-conditioned room. I did modify the bios setting, because it was running all the time, which made it better.

The computer is exactly what it was advertised to be and that is why I rate it three stars. I bought the dual-core because I do a lot of Adobe Elements processing of pictures. I expected more processing speed over the single processor Desktop so I guess I'll move to a Quad processor someday. Also, picture editing brings the fan to life.

The screen is the best feature. It is large, clear, and bright. The keyboard is adequate but I miss having a large one. I find the touchpad too cumbersome so I added a mouse. The wireless connection capability works well although I like to use my wired connection when sitting at the table. I generally have three USB ports in use for an external disk drive, mouse, camera. I have not used the SATA or HDMI plug. The speakers are not high quality but I use headphones anyway.

I ordered this laptop on 2/19 and anxiously awaited it's arrival. Got it today and am extremely pleased with it so far. It worked great with the wireless connection at work and now, after a phone call to my ISP, it works great with my satellite internet here at home. It arrived in great condition with only a few smudges that I'm sure a man left on it! LOL Gotta get a carrying case and some kind of mouse for playing my games. Great deal, great computer!!!

3 months later, I love it more than ever!! It puts the computers at work to shame!!! I would highly recommend the product and the seller!!

I bought this computer from Speedy Mobile and it just arrived yesterday (12/7/12). So far everything works just fine and it is fast. I have had a couple of freezes but I think that is my own fault. I will create a follow up review in a couple weeks. Overall I am very happy with this computer

[UPDATE]

This computer is still running very good. It is still as fast it was when I got it. I do all my college homework and I have all of music on it. The speakers are amazing for laptop speakers. The best part about this laptop is that I have not had to upgrade or fix anything in it. I would highly recomend this laptop to anyone that needs a fast, cheap and reliable laptop.

Dell Studio 15z Notebook, Intel Core i5-450M, 500GB, 15.6", Backlit Keyboard, 9 Cell Battery, Cappu

Dell Studio 15z Notebook, Intel Core i5-450M, 500GB, 15.6', Backlit Keyboard, 9 Cell Battery, CappuccinoI was looking for a 15" Notebook with System 7-64bit, an i5 processor (first generation okay), DDR3 memory, a 7200 rpm hard drive, and good producct reviews (the nine cell battery was an added plus -as I write this, the battery icon says I have 4 hours, 47 minutes with 87% remaining). Since I already have a good experience with an older Dell Studio, this looked good. I was surprised that the memory speed was faster than I expected (1333 MHZ). Since there wasn't any mention of memory speed by the seller, I was expecting a slower 1033 MHZ memory speed. I was blown away by how fast it shipped. They shipped on the same day that I placed the order AND FedEx delivered it two days after placing the order. I did have one problem -of my own making. My other Windows computers run Windows XP and I had gotten lazy about upgrading the firmware in the wireless router. Until I figured out the problem, I lost the wireless internet connection several times per day. On another subject, I agree with another reviewer who didn't recommend this Notebook for gamers. It doesn't appear to have an external video card. My understanding is that it uses video hardware on the motherboard and shares the processor/main memory. In summary, I feel like I went to the new car showroom and bought last year's model at up to 33% discount. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you have a "beer budget and champagne taste".

I purchased this laptop from Amazon a month ago and I'm very happy with my purchase. I'm not a high end user but wanted something that was versatile and this seemed to fit the need at a reasonable price. This Dell comes with a backlit keyboard which I find is my favorite feature. The slot loading DVD tray is also nice. The whole thing has that "Dell build quality" that is absent with so many of the cheaper units: great keyboard, track pad, sound. Battery life is very good. Another nice touch: Dell includes a very useful piece of software that displays frequently used icons; this dashboard disappears when a program is launched but remains available when the cursor is moved to the top of the screen. No need to collapse a window to launch another app.

I purchased this laptop after using my Dell Mini for a year. It was time to go back to full screen again. I have bought and sold 6 full size laptops while searching for the right one. When this one arrived, it was it. The look is very sharp and sleek. Its light weight and fully packed with features. My favorite are the Slot Load DVD drvie and the Back Lit Keyboard. Its like owning a Macbook but cheaper and better :) It runs fast and doesn't get as hot as my past laptops. The Sata Port on the side was something new to me and its a really cool feature. It doubles as a USB that actually works when your laptop is shut down. Great for a quick Ipod/Cell Phone charge. The touch pad works great, the keyboard is smooth to use and doesn't make the loud clicking sounds when typing. The battery has yet to die on me and I use it on average about 2.5 hours at a time. The HDMI port is wonderful and makes for easy hookup to my tv. All in all, I think for the price this laptop is hands down the best choice. If you look at the Dell Studio XPS 15 you'll see basically what your getting for a better price. They are about 94% the same.

Even though the laptop arrived fast, in perfect shape, and was as advertised specification wise, I am giving this one star for technical reasons. First, when powered up the laptop did not go through the normal Windows 7 setup routine. It booted directly to a desktop with a user profile named PC1. This is not normal and is NOT the way new laptops or desktops ship from Dell. I have been a Dell certified tech for over 20 years and have never seen this. Makes me think that even though the box was sealed, the laptop was used. SOMEONE already set it up. Kind of like the Fry's Electronics lawsuit years ago when they were re-shrink wrapping returned items. No big problem though, added second admin user then deleted the PC1 profile. After cleaning off all the Dell junk and McAfee I noticed the clock and date were way off. I rebooted to get into the system BIOS to set time & date only to find the BIOS was password protected. Now this is NOT normal and a very bad thing. If you enter an incorrect password more than three times the BIOS will lock and the laptop will not boot. Ever. It would need to be sent back to Dell. I had to purshase a BIOS password hack program ($70.00) to unlock the BIOS. I was then able to clear all BIOS passwords, set boot order, set time / date, and flash the BIOS up to the current release. I did some research on this laptop on the Dell Support site. This laptop service tag was shipped from Dell 4/18/2011 and as far as I can tell has never been registered with Dell. I will register after I finish this review and post back if there are problems. To sumarize, I just get the feeling that wasn't really new. Can't prove anything, just a feeling.
