Lenovo Ideapad Z560 09143YU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Lenovo Ideapad Z560 09143YU 15.6-Inch LaptopCompared to other laptops in the price range, this laptop gets you the most bang for your buck.

Pros:

The i5 480m is a workhorse ready to blaze through your processing tasks.

A modest 500gb hard drive waiting to store all your files and media.

4gb of RAM provide decent space for power-hungry apps.

Energy efficient.

Durable shell.

Noise suppressed fan mode.

FAST boot time. (when bloatware is removed)

Keypad.

Island keys.

2 USB and 1 SATA/USB port.

Cons:

Loads of bloatware.

CD drive doesn't stay flush with trim.

Lower end graphics for gaming.

While not quite an Alienware, this laptop is great for personal or business use. An ideal choice to replace desktop workstations. However, the mediocre graphics (intel integrated) are the only thing holding this powerhouse from reaching its full potential. HIGHLY recommended for students and anyone looking for an upgrade at a decent price.

It has been about 8 months and my computer runs as if it is brand new. I love the Veriface Logon system. It only allows you to logon on by scanning your eyes. It is 100% accurate.

The laptop batter is average if you are running on normal settings. The great thing about this laptop is that not only does this have a energy saver mode (activated by the touch pad on the top right of the keyboard) it has super energy saver. This allows you to fine tune your computers performance to optimize the battery's life.

Audio is great and the speakers are awesome.

I recommend this laptop to any college student or anyone who loves the Lenovo/IBM brand. This is a must buy and a very underrated laptop.

Amazon did it again! When I found this notebook at this price I about passed out, especially since I purchased the same identical unit (only difference is my other Z560 has the additional 512 MB video card) just months ago for another friend of mine, except for a whole lot more money. Look up the statistics yourself and you'll see that Apple and Lenovo has the highest customer loyalty and repeat buyers. It's not because we're to stupid to go not go shopping around, it's because Lenovo simply builds solid machines that have real quality. Since I take care of my friends Z560 and know this machine very well, I can tell you that you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer notebook especially at this price.

Pro's: Lovely screen, surprisingly thin yet very solid unit with surprisingly good battery life. Lenovo's quality can't be beat. The Intel I-5 processor is the best overall processor out there for those looking for a unit that offers long battery life yet has more than enough power to handle any application you'd normally run. Except for those who are using very large and complex video editing software, you'll find this machine will more than meet your average daily needs and then some. If you actually make Hollywood quality movies make sure you've got an extra $1,400 more in your checkbook to get the kind of machine you'd need for those high end users.

Con's: This is the first generation I-5 processor, not the newer one that just came out. But wait, while the newer I-5 is faster, it's not that much faster, well at least not for the extra $300 to $500 you'll have to pay or it. Unless you run multiple complex applications all at the same time, I personally doubt if you'd notice the difference.

The 4 GB of DDR3 that comes installed is more than enough but thanks to memory costs coming down, you can now easily crank up the RAM to 8 GB for around $90 most days which does make the machine a little faster. With this price you might even want to look for the upgrade now.

Don't forget to look at Lenovo's extended warranty offers. We got a 3 year next business day in house warranty on my last Z560 for around $135. Now look at other brands and try to find one for less than $190 and those still require you mail the machine in. The reason Lenovo offers such great values on their extended warranty is because their machines simply hold up well over the long haul. This is actually the 4th Lenovo I've purchased in the past 17 months and not one single unit has disappointed me. I've purchased a Y560, two Z560's and two weeks ago I also got a desktop all-in-one B520 for another friend of mine that's simply over the top! It's not the new out of box experience that will make you happy, it's the months of great tech support and real quality over the long haul that will make you most pleased with having chosen Lenovo. Be it for upgrading your current computer or for just having another handy second notebook around, this deal is one you'll be sorry you missed out on. This unit makes a great gift for those you love too.

I have been using this laptop for about 3 weeks now and it's great!

Pros:

Snappy processor

Face Recognition system (somewhat difficult for people who switch between glasses and contacts regularly)

Island Keyboard

5-in-1 Card reader

Very quiet and runs cool

Excellent battery life

HDMI and eSATA ports

Full numberpad

Convenient Mute button

Plenty of HDD space for personal use

The processor is wonderful for the demands of the system. I have a desktop with an i7 processor that runs slower than this. The face recognition system is customizable and works relatively well, though if the camera was better, the system would be more accurate. This laptop features a wonderful Island keyboard which works like a charm and is very attractive and functional. The card-reader is great although 5-in-1 is a bit over the top, most of the types are outdated and obsolete. This laptop is VERY QUIET and VERY COOL. I don't know of any other laptop that runs as efficiently as this one. The battery life is awesome, lasting at least 5 hours unplugged if starting at full battery. The HDMI and eSATA ports are always a good addition. The numberpad also helps but unless you're doing some serious number crunching, the numbers over the keyboard are good enough.

Cons:

Volume can be too low at time (fixed by using earbuds)

Integrated Graphics

Only 2 USB ports (but you can buy a USB hub for under $10)

ELAN touchpad for which 2-finger scrolling doesn't work for some reason

Bloatware

Volume and Brightness changing requires pressing the Fn button

The lack of USB ports is alright because it isn't a desktop. If you use a wireless mouse you have an extra port for connecting a printer or syncing your iPod. I would like more, but I can manage. The lack of a video card is infuriating for people who play games because while it can (most of the time) handle the graphics of games, Steam throws up "Your graphics card is not in our database and may be insufficient for this game" notices for every game you play, and Minecraft is unplayable on this computer. Bloatware is manageable but is still somewhat irritating. Volume and brightness changing is inferior to a macbook, which is what I was using earlier, but you get used to it.

Now I want to talk about the touchpad. This touchpad is ELANtech, the same company that makes Apple keyboards. Naturally, one would expect it to be capable of multi-touch gestures such as two-finger scrolling. The settings of the touchpad and every description of it online say it is capable of it, but despite much tinkering and searching, there seems to be no way to enable it. One can set it so that tapping it with 2 fingers simulates the middle button/scroll wheel but no native 2-finger scrolling. What makes this more infuriating is that because it is ELANtech, no 3rd party drivers exist for this touchpad to enable said scrolling because it is supposed to be default in it. Synaptics touchpads, which are standard in Windows PCs,have custom drivers made that enable 2-finger scrolling but none for ELANtech.

Overall this is an awesome laptop for usage, but there are certain things that definitely could be improved.
