HP Pavilion dv6-6117dx Quad Core 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC A8-3500M (Steel Gray)

HP Pavilion dv6-6117dx Quad Core 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC A8-3500MSo many choices and options on these computers! I went with this one because of the quad core A8-3500 high end processor it seems most of the others had lower end processors, and for the money this had everything I wanted, and it's very light and thin as well. Boots up faster than any other computer I've owned I hope it stays that way!

Pros:

-Boots fast

-Great display

-Sensitive mic

-Great battery life

-Good sounding on board speakers

-Nice keyboard feel

-Amazing looking brushed aluminum finish. Pictures do this no justice.

-The laptop just feels very solid and well made

-Great sound through headphones

-Runs very quiet and cool

Cons:

-Typical bloat-ware with any new computer. Take 10 min to uninstall it all.

-Charger gets HOT

Other:

-I got this for $446 after taxes and rebate from a Black Friday sale. It's a great deal at that price. I'm not sure if I would have bitten on it at this full price, but after using it I feel it's well worth it.

-A bit on the heavy feeling side. I put this in other because it's neither good or bad. It feels a bit heavy, but it's the type of heavy that is comfortable and feels like a solid built unit.

I got this laptop on a deal at Best Buy shortly after the holidays. There's 2 memory slots, so I immediately swapped in an additional 4GB of RAM, and I haven't found anything that really taxes this system much yet. I really like the look and feel of the laptop, and (upgraded to 8GB total RAM) it is an awesome deal for under $500. I don't do gaming, but I do watch netflix and HBO Go, and that streaming video quality is great on this screen, although very slightly washed out.

Now, some of the negatives. The fingerprint sensor, which is used to log in to the computer and to certain websites, stops working every few days. A restart is the only thing required to get it working again, but in the meantime, if you don't want to restart, it is somewhat annoying to have to X out of the Simplepass popup screen that shows up ever time to go to a site that you've registered for fingerprint credentials. 2nd, I find that the touchpad is too large and in an inconvenient proximity to the keys. While typing I constantly find the cursor jumping to other parts of the text, which can be rather frustrating. 3rd, for a Beats branded laptop, the speakers on this are absolutely atrocious. I know laptop speakers generally leave much to be desired, but I also have an HP touchpad and the sound out of the tiny speakers on that tablet is 1000% better than this multi-speaker laptop.

Around Black Friday 2011, these laptops were selling for $430 at Best Buy. Some people were able to get them for between $370 and $400 as well. A month or so after Black Friday, Best Buy once again had them for sale at $430. When I saw the deal, I was very interested, but hesitated and Best Buy had sold out. I was disappointed, but hoped to find a comparable deal. Sadly, I wasn't finding anything that even came close to the DV6-6117dx's specs for that price. Luckily, I found someone who had bought a few and was willing to sell it to me for the Black Friday price plus shipping. I couldn't be happier!

Now on to the laptop itself. As I said, for the right price, this is an amazing laptop. Extremely powerful, super fast, great visuals, you name it. Of course this would be considered a "budget laptop", but it feels like much more than that. I should mention that I also picked up an additional 4GBs of RAM (Corsair 4 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9) for only $20. If you pick up this laptop or one similar, you'd be a fool not to double the RAM. With the 6117dx, adding memory couldn't be any easier. After adding the additional RAM, my Windows Experience Index went from a 4.3 to a 5.9. Also, I personally haven't done this, but I've heard that the AMD A8 quad processor is very easy and safe to overclock. This processor is rated for 1.5GHz, but I've heard many people OC it to 2.4GHz and above.

I'm not a gamer, but from what I understand, this laptop (especially with the extra RAM) will play most current games on low to medium settings. Not bad at all. And from my experience, everything else from web browsing to watching videos online is instant.

So in conclusion, if you can find this laptop for below $500, don't hesitate in picking it up. You'll be very pleased!
