Alienware M14X R2 14-Inch Gaming Laptop Black, Intel Core i7-3610QM 2.0GHz, 8GB Memory, 750GB HDD,

Alienware M14X R2 14-Inch Gaming Laptop Black, Intel Core i7-3610QM 2.0GHz, 8GB Memory, 750GB HDD, 1GB NVIDIA GT 650M Graphics, Windows 7 Home PremiumThere isn't too much to gripe about this laptop. The only downside I can really think of is the screen touches the keyboard when its closed so when you open it there is small smudges. However, there are screen protectors out there or even little rubber dots that can make that stop when closing.

Its pretty much all out there. 16 gigs of ram, i7 quad core, and it came with windows 7. Now compared to my desktop Windows 7 is great for gaming, while running Windows 8 I've run across a few issues. Therefore, Windows 7 is ideal since this is a gaming PC and most products like steam tend to run a little better.

I bought the computer mainly so I could take some games with me on deployment and get some college out of the way. One thing I didn't expect but is a great little quirk is that you can customize the colors of nearly every light on the computer. It doesn't affect how it runs, but it is kind of cool.

Over all this PC runs like you'd think it runs and behaves as it should and I do recomend it if you can find one for cheap enough as I had. If you don't want to build a desktop or don't know how to(easy but time consuming) this would be a good purchase for the next few years if you want to play higher end games on a computer.

Samsung RF711-S01 17.3-Inch Laptop (Brilliant Black)

Samsung RF711-S01 17.3-Inch LaptopVery happy with this laptop. Great specs for the price. Plays Portal 2 and Arkham Asylum on High at max resolution without any hiccups. It hardly makes any noise. Vents are ideally positioned so it never gets hot. Beautiful display. Nice keyboard. Only complaint is that the shipping was slow.

No complaints with this laptop after several weeks of use! Starcraft 2 runs great, 900P screen is crisp. Plenty of other perks... would buy again.

The touchpad is going to make you wish you had a mouse. Its annoying for copy and pasting. Its also not centered relative to the laptop itself, but offset to the left. I've maxed out the sensitivity for it and it still needs more.

The wireless has software AND a button which only work together the first time after booting. So if you turn off the wireless and want to turn it on... you may have to Reboot. Plus they decided to make it more insecure by allowing it to default to on while booting... and even turning itself back on if powering off. Its annoying to push the little wireless button and nothing happens, or using the software and getting a connection error, requiring a reboot. (goodluck trying to find the actual wireless software exe file)

At this point I'm feeling I just need to uninstall their poor attempt with Win7 and put my own system onto it, assuming its not going to depend on their garbage software.

And why on earth couldnt they just make a pdf of their manual instead of some exe file which is overkill and fairly useless if you've been around computers for a few years?

PowerDVD software still hickups playing back bluray even with 8GB of memory installed.

Speakers give a hollow sounding playback.

I'm glad I only paid 740 for this.. I bought Samsung because I have a Samsung monitor thats lasted over 6 years and is user friendly. I guess it didnt translate to laptops.

Maybe my review will improve if the clean install improves performance and cuts some of the annoyance...

Update: Re-installing a clean Win7 Ultimate sure made it better. Even the touchpad works better.

We purchased the 17.3 inch model NP-RF711 about six month ago. We loved the screen and performance about this Samsung but the battery life was only 3 hours normal use. Still, we were mostly using it home so 3 hours was enough. But, that was just a beginning! Few month later it went down drastically and now its literally ten minutes! So, we contacted Samsung about this issue and after they verified everything they told us to ship it to them by UPS and wait approximately two weeks for them first to test it. Now, we had a Sony laptop being warranty serviced before and they never expected us to give out our laptop for at least a two weeks in order for them to first test it. I offered their Customer Service rep. Jessica to take it to a Samsung Service Center which I know they have in the area but they only give you one option mail it and wait! Their Rep was unprofessional and unfortunately very ignorant. You would get more help from automated answering machine probably than from their Service team. I hope this will warn some of you considering buying Samsung laptop. Don't buy it unless you confident you wont have to ever call their Service Department! Save your money and buy something else, not worth it.

Sony VAIO VPCEB42FX/WI 15.5" Laptop - Silvery White

Sony VAIO VPCEB42FX/WI 15.5' Laptop - Silvery WhiteI previously owned a Toshiba laptop someone bought for me that I hated. Every time I used it there was always some issue with it until one day it finally broke after Windows was not able to start. I have been wishing for a Sony Vaio laptop ever since they came out, and I am so happy I finally got one.

This is one of the best laptops I've ever used. The battery life is phenomenal compared to my old laptop that couldn't last more than an hour on power-saver mode. This laptop lasts me at least 3-4 hours on one charge when running several programs at once.

The design is beautiful, and the Intel core i3 processor is fast and works well.

The only complaints I have against this laptop is that there is no way to change the volume without using the mouse and clicking on the volume icon in the system tray. Also, the sound card(?) that came standard with this laptop isn't the greatest. It's not very loud, so if I want to watch movies on it I have to attach external speakers to it if my house isn't completely silent. And once you get past 90% volume, the quality of the sound gets crappy faster than my previous Toshiba laptop.

With that said, I'm extremely satisfied with this laptop, but a better sound card would make this laptop even better. Other than that, it's a great laptop! As a college student, I am very happy I bought this laptop because it can do everything I need and more.

2.53GHz is very fast for a laptop computer. The web button is very nice to go direct to the internet without having to open the windows program. The wireless chip for the TV is a bit expensive for us to buy the receiver right now. Of course with a Sony what you get is a brighter, clearer, sharper screen. It is well worth it to pay more and we got a great price at the office supply store. We still have our G router, I may have to upgrade to the N to take advantage of the faster connection. They put junk on it though because of Sonys cronies: Bing, Norton and other bloatware. Their Bing photo is very nice though. You can refuse them and hopefully they will not load and take up resources. I much prefer Microsoft essentials anti virus software. Sony continues to be the leader. Otherwise I would go to Acer because anything made in Taiwan is much better then what they are making in China. Although I would trust Sony to supervise their China factories more then a lot of companys that don't seem to have a clue about what goes on over there in China. Of course Sony Claims a lot of their parts are still make in Japan and then assembled in China. Some of the computers assembled in America have a bunch of quality parts that are not integrated to work together properly and you have nothing but problems with them.

Asus K53U-RBR5 15.6-Inch Laptop (Brown)

Asus K53U-RBR5 15.6-Inch LaptopI knew that this was not going to be the best or fastest laptop but I did expect it to last more than a year. It was very slow from the start and progressively got worse. One day is just stopped working. Asus was of no help. I would do more research and invest a little more money for a better laptop that will last longer.

Sony SVT15115CXS Vaio T Series Ultrabook 15.5" Touch-screen Laptop - 8gb Memory - Silver Mist

Sony SVT15115CXS Vaio T Series Ultrabook 15.5' Touch-screen Laptop - 8gb Memory - Silver MistI have had the laptop for two weeks, and it works excellent. Powerful, fast and Windows 8 is really not that bad.

The laptop is thin and light. The aluminum body is excellent looking and appears to be durable. The hinge is full length which I prefer for durability. Screen resolution is excellent. Touch screen works well, but you don't need to use it if you don't want. Battery life is about 4 plus hours on standard settings.

This laptop is amazing. Sony does a great job; the Sony Imagination bundled software is great and Sony keeps it's reputation however there is a fix to the Fan problem (and I'll explain the fix) for all T series.

Pros:

1080P resolution or double the resolution of that of 720P on a 16:9 display.

Touch screen is great on Win 8; firmware has been updated. No I know Win 8 is not so great but it's a start.

Sony Vegas Studio, Imagination Studio Bundled software

Typing is fast. I have never typed so fast on a computer; the keyboard is great.

The viewing angels are average and it's easy to install (a must have) SSD.

It's very light. The battery life lasts about 4.5 hours which is fine for me.

I don't need the optical drive so I replace it with a 9.5mm 2.5" SATA 2nd HDD Hard Driver Caddy in place for the DVD Optical Bay so I have 1 HDD, 1 SSD, and 1 MSSD.

L.F. New 2.5" /9.5mm (SATA) 2ND HDD HARD DRIVE Caddy/Adapter For DELL Latitude E6400 E6500 E6410 E6510 E4300; DELL Precision M2400 M4400 M4500 Series

Cons:

The fan is loud and it really doesn't shoot out any really hot exhaust . The fan comes on max settings too quickly. I've had computers that have had double the heat temperature come from a vent and there seems no way that this computer should get to 70 degrees Centigrade.

There is an easy fix to this though. And that's for all T-series laptops.

It's right here but it's spoken in German:

Simply you need to download the latest version of fan speed control:

Right now the latest version is .14.4.6..

Download that and put it on the recommended settings on the manual. This machine has no reason not to have a bios update doing the same process.

Seriously, I've had multiple gaming computers like the Asus G53 series, The Dell XPS 16 series, etc. and they put out much higher temperatures of fan exhaust than this one by far. Maybe it gets hot because of the touchscreen running both the processor and the HD 4000 integrated graphics but don't ruin your cpu/motherboard by putting the max fan speed too low.

Once you downloaded it and put it at the Sony E series default (that's good enough) you need to set it up to automatically start up every time you turn the on button on.

Read that and you'll be all set.

Update:

The fan really does get loud. I was pulling 80 degrees centigrade while I was just using internet explorer with multiple tabs open. There is no IPS screen like the S series. I rarely use the touch screen and it does not look good in sunlight so I'm switching to an S series with IPS screen. IPS screens you can view from all angels.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6888 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6888 15.6-Inch Touchscreen LaptopWas afraid of getting windows 8 plus a new computer. This set up in seconds, took a little longer getting to Windows 8 but was surfing in a few hours. The built in tutorial made the change much easier than I ever expected. I am no computer tech so I just followed the directions and have no problems with this computer. Love the speed, lighted keys, light weight and ease of transition. Now windows 8 is another story!

Against the advice of friends, I bought the Acer Aspire after reading PCMag and other reviews suggesting it as a good replacement for a PC. The laptop arrived, looked ok, powered up but the screen was black. Spent quite some time trying to figure out what went wrong. Was told that it was most likely a failure in the mainframe, battery or power cord all of which would need to be replaced. I was very disappointed but realized that cheap is cheap and opted to return it and get a more expensive competitor (HP Envy) and so far so good. I wouldn't recommend the Acer even if you're just looking for a cheaper option for a child. Unreliable and cheap. I also want to mention that the laptop arrived a day later than promised by Amazon. First time in a long time that happened. All around a bad experience I won't be repeating.

Gateway ID49C12u 14 Inch Laptop - Arctic Silver

Gateway ID49C12u 14 Inch Laptop - Arctic SilverThis is almost a perfect laptop. Excellent size +/14 inches. Very light +/5 pounds. The Intel i5 cpu is a fantastic chip and runs applications like a breeze, 4.6 on the Windows 7 user experience index. I've had absolutely no issues with the product, in fact, the touch pad is better than most other laptops I've used. The specs vs price seemed just right for what I needed this laptop for and the item delivered in all aspects.

I receive my laptop last Oct 21, 2010 because I work on the ship. Im very impressed with the look of the laptop. It doesn't look cheap and the design was elegant. The only problem that I encountered is sometimes when I press the touchpad button (the one on the left), its not responding... Sometimes i need to tap the center touchpad before it response... it is hassle when i want to drag a file...i cant drag it because the left button is not responding... and I used this laptop for Deejaying so dragging files is common in my command... Sometimes I need to try it several times before it rsponse... I am not sure if i need to upgrade the driver for touchpad or not but its giving me hard time... I haven't complaint yet to Amazon because I'm still testing it.

The rest of the specification is good and fast. I will recommend this laptop...

Please put comment if you have the same problem like mine... So that I wont waste my time testing it...

I bought this for my daughter in college. 4 days after she got it the mouse pad did not work right. After spending MANY hours with Gateway Tech Service, updating programs, system restores over many many calls I had to spend $18 to ship it to them for repair. They "fixed" it and sent it back. STILL DOES NOT WORK and I CAN'T RETURN IT!!! Gateway is TERRIBLE If you buy one you will be sorry!

This laptop is very good for the price. The touch pad takes a little getting used to, especially after sharing a macbook pro with my wife. But I've been using this computer for a week now, and I'm starting to like the touch pad a little better. Right click remains an issue (have to click more than once sometimes), but again, it's always a matter of getting used to something new. The keyboard is awesome. I'd say it's better than my wife's macbook pro and she reluctantly agreed. The computer is fast, looks great, and is the perfect size.

The sound quality and surround sound is great. But the computer lacks volume and doesn't get very loud. With headphones it sounds great. The new Windows 7 is pretty stable. However, beware that if you don't set it to go into sleep mode when you close the lid it will lock up -just one of those things with windows. I don't think it has anything to so with the computer itself.

It's also very light and the battery life is what gateway says it is (5 hours or so depending on what you're running).

For the price, look no further...it's a keeper.

I originally purchased the HP Pavilion dm3-3110us 13.3-Inch Notebook PC Silver but ended up returning it due to the processor was just not fast enough for my needs. Both have a similar silver design and are lightweight. I actually prefer the overall looks on the HP but this Gateway is much faster for my needs.

I upgraded the ram to 8gb using Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 and noticed a huge difference in overall performance. Windows Performance score is 4.7.

I am not having any problems with the touchpad like others have mentioned, in fact I really like this type of pad. Has a solid feel and 'click' when pushed. The glowing touchpad is ok but would have preferred a backlit keyboard. Speaking of keyboard this design is really nice with open space between the keys making it easy to clean with some canned air.

Didn't come with a ton of software installed like the HP mentioned above...which is a good thing

CD rom is ok but these days it is something I really don't need anymore but may appeal to others

Weighs just a tad over 5 pounds

Speakers are nothing great and do not get that loud. Quality is great with headphones

Has a dedicated social network key but prefer to view it all in a browser instead of using the app

My last desktop was a Gateway and it lasted over 5 years with absolutely no issues before I sold it.

Very happy with this laptop and is priced right.

I've had good experiences with you in the past, but this Acer laptop I bought from your site for $553.20 (order #002-2809933-d1921830) has been nothing but an ordeal!!!! The sound didn't function (I could barely hear it, even though all levels were at maximum)...I paid $80 for a computer tech, who couldn't fix it, so I had to ship it to Acer for repair (box COST ME $10). I probably could have sent it back to you, but sent it to Acer, who said they'd try and fix it. I won't buy another big ticket item from you, I can assure you (if I buy anything at all in the future!)

Audio is obviously "bad' , both via the built in loudspeakers, and with 3rd party loudspeakers ( external) which work brilliantly on my MacBook. Voice sounds like the person speaking is on helium, and music is just plain pathetic. Customer Support tried to help but were unable to come up with any worthwhile suggestions other than "I would suggest that you to perform a system recovery from the hard drive partition to resolve the issue. If the issue related to software, it will be resolved by performing a recovery.

Please note that all your personal data files and applications will be lost, if you perform a recovery. Be sure that back up all the data before performing a recovery. Sometimes the steps below fail to launch the recovery on the first attempt. It is important to launch the recovery using this method at least twice."

Not the kind of message I expect to get for a brand new computer

Cheap price (460.00 for mine with shipping)

Dual Core processor

4gb DDR2

Windows 7 x64

Plenty of inputs, but lacks a modem (shouldnt matter for much, but con for me since it is a work computer)

Cons

A bit weak in the graphic's department (Fine, unless you plan to use this for gaming)

rather weak battery life (Lowest brightness + Eco Mode gets me 2 1/2 hrs)

Does not come with Driver or restore disk!

I bought this laptop looking for something cheap and powerful, and this thing has power aplenty. Boots in around 20 seconds. It can handle WoW at max resolution, even in Dalaran without chugging, so it is capable of doing some modest gaming. If your like me and looking for a powerful laptop for under 500 dollars, I really cant recommend this laptop enough. I am starting a job as a field networking engineer, so having my own laptop was a must. I had to buy an external 56k to USB modem and a USB to DB-9 Serial converter, but I really didnt expect to find a laptop that had such old technologies standard anyway, but it is worth noting. The battery life may prove to be an issue during long class sessions or long nights on site, but at around 2 hours, it is satisfactory.

Pros : Ram, cpu, and hard drive compliment each other well. Integrated video card is impressive: Rise of Legends and Age of Empires 3 run very well with settings at 3/4 of the max. Win7 Premium was a welcome addition (I had thought basic would certainly be installed.) Very light and reasonably quiet. Screen and keyboard take some getting used to (both are wider than standard), but are well-suited to most tasks.

Cons: Almost all the bundled software is useless and adds a significant amount of overhead to usage. Overall I spent 3 hours uninstalling and updating. Windows 7 is definitely the best Windows OS so far, but severely lags behind the most popular Linux distros, namely Ubuntu and Fedora, for everyday use and productivity.

The battery life is average: 2 to 4 hours, depending on how you use it (however it's not a big issue to me.)

HP ProBook 4720s XT949UT Notebook PC (Intel Core i7-620M 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 17.3

HP ProBook 4720s XT949UT Notebook PC This thing is nice but now out of date so I do not think there are any new ones going around, but to talk about this for a moment it's like this. I have a ProBook 4510s that I carry around that I love cause it's small, this 4720s is just like that but with a larger screen which is nice but heavier to carry and now that I am getting use to Windows 7, sort of, I like that as well, although I will keep all my XP systems as XP. I also have the ProBook 4730s and to compare the two it's like this. More money for the 4730s and it has the finger reader built in so it's a bit nicer. Other then that there the same, least I think they are, for I do not overload the memory and such to notice a difference.

So, that's my short version of this laptop. O, also like the finish on the outside over the slick black of my older 4510s that shows every fingerprint.

PS>i bought an open box one and was worried a bit but see no issues with it.

Dell XPS M1330 Laptop (Black)

Dell XPS M1330 LaptopMy husband got this for me for my grad school, early Spring of 2008. As of this morning the M1330 has exhausted its puny life span of roughly 2-1/2 years.

The problems started early 2009 when the adapter failed to charge the battery, apparently a common problem (google diy options). I was about 10-days out of warranty so as every one knows the company that once was a hallmark of customer service (circa 100 BC) flatly refused to fix it. Even the fix they condescendingly offered was not a guaranteed one.

Apparently, some claim the problem is with the NVIDIA drivers, and a subsequent overheating of the motherboard. It could also be that the adapter jack got fried, the battery is dead or the charge cord is dysfunctional. In summating costs, I realized the best way to fix it was to try and fix it myself.

So I upgraded my bios, changed cord, changed battery (about $175). Up and running again for about a year, until last night, when 'ptzzz, chtink....' tongue-out dead!

Cannot wake it up, tried three different cords, direct charge (no batt). Nothing.

I will take out the harddrive tonight to salvage it. My husband's work place will do it. I admit. Sometimes, just sometimes, I miss working in the high tech industry.

We have two Dell laptops (the other is a 'i-will-die-any-day now' vostro100) and two Dell PCs. Never again.

Now, if Apple hardware married nonproprietary software, I'd be set. But that is for a blog rant.

Although the battery life isn't the greatest with just the standard edition, this laptop packs a lot of performance into such a slim and nice looking machine. The m1330 lets you surf the web, have multiple programs running, etc, all without affecting performance. Overall, great computer. I suggest buying the 9 cell battery.

I've had my Dell XPS M1330 for about 2 years now. It has travelled with me extensively and really I have had no problems at all with it. The power cord did have trouble about 2 months after I bought the laptop, but Dell sent someone round and he replaced the power cord and it was fine after that. Aparently the part of the mother board that the power cord connects is prone to breaking but fortunately it was just my power cord that was faulty. 2 of the other girls in the company that I work got all singing all dancing top of the range Dells and had no end of trouble with them, and the Dell customer support was terrible which was a shame. Anyway, as I said, I've had my little XPS for 2 years and really no dramas so I would recommend this laptop.

Gateway 17.3" Core i5 500GB HDD Notebook

Gateway 17.3' Core i5 500GB HDD NotebookFor years it been Gateway computers only.... I believe in them... They last long....

A couple years ago I bought a Gateway NV79C52u 17.3 Inch Laptop Velvet Blue: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y733KU/ It's been through a lot of use, not to mention travel. It's still holding up, but is basically for business only. I like so much I tried to find one for personal use but couldn't. Gateway/Acer complicates matters when it comes to getting a Gateway, anymore... When I see what I want on their site I have to do an almighty search to find it on or offline... There was nothing locally. I did find this one (as close to the NV79C52u, as possible) via Amazon/TigerDirect -after multiple searches....

It came directly from TigerDirect. The laptop arrived safely and well packed...

The BLUE NV79C52U has headset/mic/usb/power(and more) on left; 2.0 usb / BlueRay driver on right. Speakers at the front, underneath / Windows 7. It has a sturdy DVD/BlueRay.

The WHITE NV76R23U seems heavier; Ports are on the opposite side... mic/headset/power/3.0 usb on the right w/ DVD drive no Blueray ; Wide/Long Speaker behind the keyboard. Windows 8.

Okay... I'm not a Windows 8 Fan... And Gateway has too many Apps installed, but they can be uninstalled... Thank goodness the old-fashion desktop is available that's where I put my icons for quick access... I'll figure out Windows 8, slowly... and maybe I'll like it...
