Toshiba is a consumer electronics company. They have no idea what they are doing with computer support. If you want a TV, they are probably a fine vendor. With computers, not so much.As i was in a conference overseas and my Toshiba got broken I thought I could buy a Toshiba portege from Amazon and receive it from a collegue who would join me for presentation few days later flying fm LAX. I placed Toshiba order on 23rd as expedited shipment and paid extra for1-3 bus.days delivery. The order was shipped from a Missouri shop called Kaikai Jakestore on 25th and from what we could track at the same day it arrived to Kansas on 25th. From there on neither this store nor Fedex have published any info about the delivery, except an estimation of 28th. I tried to express my urgency and my right to receive it latest on 27th as it was shown on amazon site before the payment. Fedex just lied all the way saying that they have processed this situation to their related department and Kaikai Jakestore never answering even once their customer service line, just started to send mails of indifference i.e proposing a full refund, not charging expetied shipment until they finaly admit that they made a mistake by choosing FEDEX ground shipment i.e a truck driving all the way fm Kansas to Oxnard CA. My collegue had waited until 3 pm. on 28th -which was the worse scenario by the wayat home despite having his flight at 18.15 and 1 hr. drive before. Meanwhile there was an email chain of 20 but none reaching to a solution,trying to find the missing mysterious Toshiba.a
I felt never been so much used and stressed after paying around 1000 usd. So Thanks Amazon, thanks Kaikai Jakestore and thanks FEDEX for not even giving us the info of my extra valuable package. I hope it gets lost from this point as I would need an extra evidence of your insincerity about customer care and you even feel little more ashamed on that poor service.
hope that I will never have to shop fm amazon again and do not advice anyone who is in critical expectation to do so either. Shame on you.

The build quality of this laptop is quite nice, the trackpad is more than big enough, the keys and buttons are all responsive and easy to find.
windows 8 is a different beast of an OS, but it feels like a breath of fresh air and a logical extension of the legacy windows platform.
The hardware specs are very nice for a laptop. If you are looking for power gaming, turn away. If you are looking for a portable family computer though, for the price this is a great piece of hardware. 4GB of RAM is adequate, the processor is snappy for being a dual-core, and 500GB of space is more than enough to house music, videos, pictures and apps that will undoubtedly accumulate through use.
For the price of this laptop, it is more than worth the purchase.I purchased this laptop just to upgrade from my netbook, so I could have something to do homework and travel. I wasn't looking for a desktop replacement; I have a real desktop beast for home use. When I got it home, I did some re-configuring on it, cleaned the the bloatware off, and added a Win7 style shell. I was surprised how fast it was. So I loaded WoW to see if it could run that (I normally only play on desktop). I was able to fly around Orgrimmar on medium graphics settings with little to no lag. For a machine that I paid so little for, I am very impressed.
It is unfortunate that this very capable machine gets poor reviews because the operating system is not as user friendly as its predecessors. I am not an Asus fan boy, but I have never been disappointed by their products.The computer is fine, however it appears that it is Win 8 32 bit not 64bit. Unable to address all the memory in the system. The packaging was a joke, The computer was in it's original box and then placed in a shipping box with NO packaging so it could just slide around during shipping and the shipping box was quite a bit larger; really sloppy work. Win8 is a joke, I wish I could have gotten this with Win7. The first thing I installed was a utility to give me the Win7 start button. Not to much bloatware though. A good basic laptop so I'm pleased but the packaging and Win8 knocked off 2 stars for me. My bad, it is Win8 64, Installed IOBit start 8 and a much better experience, still it's 2 stars off for the packaging.I've had several Asus computers before. I've always loved them. It seems the quality of materials for has gone down significantly since my last purchase a few years ago. The keyboard has poor response, and I often find myself going back to correct missing letters that I have apparently not hit hard enough. The keys also "bubble" up in the center of the top two rows, it's unsightly and they make an obnoxious noise when I have to it them.
Other than those issues, and maybe the fact that Windows 8 is a pain to figure out, I like this computer. It does what I need it to.just what I needed. not to fancy not to cheap. great buy for the money. delivered fast and healthy. will do it again when ready

I actually bought this laptop with a $150 rebate (making it $750) at a local store (not Amazon). For that price, I couldn't find a laptop to beat this one. Even at the current $830 Amazon price, it's unbelievable that this thing has an i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, three USB 3.0 ports, AND an HDMI port! I bought the laptop based mainly on these features. While a 750 GB hard drive seems small compared to the 1 or 1.5 TB hard drives many higher-level laptops come with these days, I didn't really care about hard drive size because I'll continue to use the 2 TB external drive I had continually connected with my old desktop (also eliminates the need to spend hours waiting for files to transfer over!).
There are a few minor cons I've found with the laptop since I've gotten it. For one thing, the 750 GB hard drive seems small compared to the 1 or 1.5 TB hard drives many higher-level laptops come with these days. However, I didn't really care about hard drive size because I'll continue to use the 2 TB external drive I had continually connected with my old desktop (also eliminates the need to spend hours waiting for files to transfer over!). Therefore, this doesn't really affect my rating.
When I got it, the display seemed really off compared to the monitor on my desktop. Seeing as I do a fair bit of color-correcting with my video editing, I need a display that shows everything exactly right, or the world will see my videos differently than I will (in a bad way, more likely than not). There is NOT a way to adjust the contrast via the keyboard or any function keys. You have to go into the Control Panel and find "Intel(R) Graphics and Media". Once there, I had full control of the display brightness, contrast, gamma, hue, and saturation. I was able to fairly successfully calibrate my monitor, so that is no longer an issue (just a bit of an annoyance at first).
The speakers aren't great on this they're Beats Audio, so the bass is really heavy, to the point of distortion on some audio. I plan on using headphones or buy some external speakers soon to eliminate this problem.
One big thing this computer lacks is the ability to tell if Num Lock is on. There's a very nice little bluish LED on the corner of the Caps Lock button, but the Num Lock lacks this feature. Even the Wifi on/off function button has an LED that changes from blue to red if Wifi is turned off. Because of this, I never know if I'm about to hit "7" or "Home". This has already tripped me up several times in the few days I've had this laptop. Needless to say, it is nice to have a full num pad, but I'd like to know if Num Lock is on. There's also not a "Scroll Lock" button, but I don't know that this is really even used anymore, but thought it was worth noting here.
The tracking pad does have a handy spot in the top left you can double-tap to disable/enable it (a red light comes on when it's off...still no light or anything for Num Lock!) which will be very useful once I get an external mouse to use with it. It claims to have multi-touch capabilities, which it does...to a certain degree. I've accidentally pinched in and out (zooming in and out a web page) more often than I've meant to. In fact, only once have I actually intended to pinch. It's a feature I feel this laptop would be better without. It's more of a nuisance than a nice feature. The tracking pad also lacks any form of a scrollbar you can't drag your finger down the right side and expect the page you're viewing to scroll down. This is really annoying for me, as I've been used to having that on previous laptops I've used.
This laptop does come with a ton of pre-installed software from HP (most of which I've taken off already) that clutters up the Start Menu, taskbar, and desktop. It's just another little nuisance that can be fixed within the first few hours of owning the laptop.
Now, I know I've listed a bunch of cons here, but they're all just little things (most of which can be easily fixed or don't bother me). This is a very nice laptop that I will get great usage out of. I just wanted to post a few things here that would have been nice to know before I bought it. In my opinion, despite this little annoyances, this is still a 5-star laptop, especially for what I'll be using it for. The battery lasts more than 4 hours and charges fairly quickly, it has a fast processor and a decent-sized screen. I would highly recommend this to anyone in need of a laptop that requires high performance (i.e., rendering videos, etc.). If you just want a laptop for word processing, surfing the web, PowerPoint presentations, etc., go out and get a cheaper computer with an i3 processor.

Only two USB ports one of mine stopped working after a few months for no apparent reason
No HDMI output
Large size
Heavy
Poor speakers
AC charger input became loose and laptop stopped charging
PROS:
Price
i3 processor + graphics decent enough for gaming
500 GB hard drive = plenty of space
Ran well enough for the first few monthsBy buying this computer I thought I was buying one of the best teams for fame asus quality, however, is not so because the reader cd / dvd has trouble reading and burning discs and USB port with only a few few applications are damage to detach from their place and stay within it.This has been a good laptop. I wished it had more usb ports. But overall this is a good product and the second I have owned.For the money not that bad but one needs to be Tech-savvy for debugging these things that written about in many reviews -It onlys has 2 usp port (1 (3.0), 1 (2.0)) , the battery don't last long and it seems that the keyboard was a little unattached correctly but i adjust it

factory software and how to register the warrant. But since my previous laptop was a dell I already knew how to do this. For example, the laptop did not come with the web cam software installed. I had to go to the Dell driver/software page to install. Like I said no big deal, but someone unfamiliar may have a problem. Recommend this seller to other buyers. Would buy from them again.ordered as new, loads of confusion on amazon's part prior to christmas, received laptop on christmas eve, problems after 3rd day, when contacting dell, told that warranty was expired because laptop was registered the year before to someone in California, I am in VA. very disappointed. Amazon refunded immmediately upon receipt of return but was lax in helping to find a suitable replacement.

-14 inch monitor and solid keyboard means you can actually do real work on this machine, compared to a tablet or netbook;
-Touchscreen make Windows 8 much easier to use;
-Backlit keyboard finally makes it to budget laptops;
-USB 3.0 is mind blowingly fast at transferring files;
-Speakers are loud enough for decent movie watching;
Cons:
-Boring design. Lid is completely black. The rest is a clone of the Macbook Pro;
-Same blocky power adapter from 1997;
-Windows 8 and reversed touchpad scrolling requires a learning curve;
-Heavier than it looks;Fantastic Windows 8 Touch Ultrabook by HP. Cyber-Monday was the perfect opportunity for this purchase. Our family purchased two of these devices. We would have purchased 3 but there was a limit. This laptop has all the performance and requirements you will need to do majority of computing tasks. Love the superfast 15 seconds Windows 8 boot up time...much thanks to the 32G hybrid mSSD cache. Benefit with a hybrid mSSD gives you more capacity with a traditional 500GB HD plus the ability to quickly start up your computer. This is the way to go for performance / capacity at a lower price. The Envy Touch Ultrabook does have some heft to it but not a deal breaker at all since the thin form factor design keeps it looking fresh and sleek. Build quality is well constructed. Backlit keyboard is a nice feature but the keys themselves could use some improvement. However, I did not have any trouble typing lengthy emails. Touch screen response is excellent and does not exhibit any lag or latency. Intel Core i3 performs well for web surfing, email, and multiple app operations. If you can get your hands on one of these HP Envy Ultrabooks I'd highly recommend getting one to start your Windows 8 touch experience.

I bought this online on cyber Monday. I got it last Friday. Really cool lap top but not impressed with W8I am happy with the hardware. Its slim, battery live is over 6 hours, with average use. I am sure if you were playing videos or games, it may not be as much, but I figured you may be able to watch a movie start to end without battery running out. It's light, screen gets really smudgy with finger prints.
so GREAT LAPTOP for the price point that I bought it for.
It has 24 Gig SSD drive for quick boot times, which I don't think is in the spec.
It has a back lit key board. The mouse pad it one piece but and right and left click are built in to the pad, so you don't see separate buttons. The right scroll feature is turned off, so you have to go to the mouse settings under control panel to turn it on. I like the two finger scroll and two finger click to get right click menu.
I have noticed some issues with few apps crashing, and even during the initial set up W8 encountered an error and ran me through the initial set up the second time only to duplicate the user account on the computer.
Screen is really nice and crisp. Webcam is average.
Not a lot of fan noise, but then again there aren't a lot of vents on this either. I did NOT notice it running hot or anything. Also the battery is built in, so you can't just pop it out.This is a fantastic computer for the price.
Pros:
-slim and lightweight
-touchscreen
-usb 3
-windows 8
-backlit keyboard
-charges fast and has a decent battery life
cons:
-no dvd drive
Overall I would highly advise getting this ultrabook!This is a nice little compter for people who do not want to lug around a heavy laptop with a large screen, very clear picture and happy with it.

Performance wise, here's how it compares with my other laptop on the Unigine Heaven Benchmark tool.
Gateway FX-6160 ($1300 5 years ago); Windows Vista (build 6002, Service Pack 2) 64bit; Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz; NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS
FPS: 14.1
Score: 355
Min FPS: 6.2
Max FPS: 26.0
Asus X501A $369; Win 8; Intel Core i3-3120M @ 2.50 GHz; Intel HD graphics 4000.
FPS: 9.3
Score: 235
Min FPS: 5.0
Max FPS: 20.6
That might not seem very good, but the Heaven benchmark is a demanding tool. Playing a casual game like PanzerCorps (reboot of the Panzer General series from the 90's) shows no slowdown or other deficiencies. The main point is how close it comes to matching the Core2Duo from just a few years agoI wanted an light, inexpensive computer for air travel vacations, with a larger screen than most ultrabooks. This machine worked OK out of the box, no problems.
Pros: Very quiet fan, light weight for its screen size (no DVD drive helps), inexpensive, looks good. Trackpad surface is excellent (many trackpads are too slick or too rough for comfort).
Cons: Only 2 USB ports (1 is 3.0), mediocre keyboard.
I'm very pleased with this machine so far. Windows 8 works much better after installing free Classic Shell program to avoid pointless "Metro" start screen. It's not ideal for playing Far Cry 3 or writing thousands of words a day, but I have other machines for more demanding tasks. After replacing the hard drive with a basic SSD (required partial disassembly) this machine is very responsive and more than fast enough for my travel needs.

Current Windows Experience Index:
Processor: 6.7
RAM: 7.3 (@ 8 GB)
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming Graphics: 6.5
Primary HD: 7.1
It's very lightweight for its size and seems sturdy enough, although I'd feel safer with it in a case even when at home. The attractive gun metal grey finish rounds out a great package. Definitely a great buy for a mid level entertainment laptop if you're looking for one at a sub-$500 price range.Bought this AMD-based Ideapad because it seemed that folks thought its Intel counterpart was problematic. I'm not the least bit disappointed. I needed a basic laptop with moderate horsepower. I replaced the OS with my copy of Windows 7 Pro and it's a fairly fast machine, I won't need more than its 4GB of RAM or an SSD drive. I use a fast 32GB SD card for Microsoft's ReadyBoost feature but I'm not sure this laptop even needs that. I use it mostly for web surfing and remote sessions to my more powerful computers downstairs, but like to watch videos every now and then too. As many have noted, the sound is adequate but could be improved, however I'm hard of hearing and usually use headphones anyway. The touchpad is textured but it's not distracting, and it's positive and accurate. I do miss a middle button -this rig has a single button bar below the touchpad that acts sort of like a rocker for right and left clicks. Seems strange but it works fine. Very minor complaints for an otherwise excellent computer, I certainly think my money was well-spent.

This PC plays Max Payne 3 at 1336x768(high) with normal settings(such as texture quality) on, and Skyrim plays at high smoothly and ultra at a mostly playable framerate! Im amazed considering how cheap this laptop is! I played the games as vannila as the computer was out of the box, so no overclocking, modding, etc. The fans do a great job, keeping the computer at a just below warm temperature when gaming, and cool when browsing/ doing light loads on cpu. Don't let the 1.5 ghz scare ya, you can still overclock since the computer came unlocked. Laptop came 1 day early, Monday, when it was supposed to come Tuesday. Amazons shipping is great, fast, and efficient. I highly recommend it!Want Lenovo Ideapad Z575 12992DU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Gun Metal Grey) Discount?
