Acer Aspire S3-391-6899 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne)

This is lightweight, the screen is great, the touch pad is large and all the connections are on the back which is a personal preference for myself. I bought this mainly to take with me on road trips and for dedicated use for personal stuff. My favorite feature is the bluetooth, I connected a stereo headset and found the sound quality to be crisp and clear, perfect for those times when I may want to listen to something without disturbing others.
I got an awesome deal with a amazon promotion so for the 550.00 I paid for this I found it to be an exceptional value given the size, weight and features!! A great item and price for students!!!I've had this ultrabook for about 2 months now, and it's performed quite decently so far. I'm not a very picky consumer, and I don't gripe about small inconveniences, especially when considering that the price for this ultrabook is rather reasonable when compared to others in the same tech/spec range.
Pros: it really is ultra-light, the sleek design is similar to the 13-inch version of the MacBook Air (though the material & build are likely not as sturdy or well put-together, hence the immense price difference), and it has a sleek outer shell that doesn't retain fingerprints or stains so easily (which is something that netbook/notebook users seem to care about). Most importantly, it is immensely portable. The i3 processor is quite capable when it comes to intensive web use (which is what I mainly do with it), and it does start up quickly from its "sleep" or "hibernation" modes. Some consumers have mentioned that the speed slows down considerably when having too many windows/programs open, but I can't verify if this is the case with my own machine since I'm not the kind of user who likes to have more than 8 Word documents open while using a tab-heavy Google Chrome open as well. If you expect to execute intensive business-related activities on your notebook, I definitely would recommend stepping up to an i5 or i7 processor; I own an Acer laptop with an i5 on it, and it's able to handle larger-order tasks like that. My advice: use an i3 ultrabook for basic to intensive web use (especially cloud use), and since this machine has a 500 GB harddrive, you'll be able to save quite a lot of material on it.
Cons: the 5.5 hour battery life is something of a fabrication. You get 2.5 to 3 hours MAX if you use it for that long without break, but if you intersperse your sessions with occasional use (closing and re-opening it from time to time) the battery will drag itself out through a good part of the day. I suppose this kind of intermittent use was what Acer meant by "5.5 hour battery life". One user has accurately recognized that the screen is liable to shake too often if the notebook is moving too much; so long as you have a sturdy table or desk that doesn't budge or shake, the screen won't shake at all, even if you're clacking away at the keys with any degree of intensity. I imagine that, in general, the keys might not be responsive...at first. In the case of this notebook, the key for letter "C" was not loose enough (as if it were semi-stuck into the groove of the body), but after 2 months that particular key became loosened and now is about as responsive as the others. I had (and continue to have) a similar problem with the larger i5 Acer notebook I own: the blue "Fn" key still does not work in conjunction with the Fn controls (such as turning the volume down or up, increasing or decreasing the brightness, etc.), but since that key and its related controls are not absolutely crucial to the basic performativity of the notebook, I don't give it much mind. I still get the performance that I need from the machine. In any case, I think that Acer machines generally seem to have a slight looseness or vulnerability to their build--which is why their prices are what they are. So I can't complain.
All in all, I'm satisfied with what the notebook gives me: portability, sleekness, lightness, connectivity. I've been a consistent Acer user for a few years now (I own 3 machines by them), and I can't say they've disappointed me thus far. Even though the Cons seem to outnumber the Pros in terms of quantity, they are actually quite minor quibbles in relation to the fantastic price the notebook's offered at, and quite minor too in relation to the overall quality the notebook gives you; which is to say, it functions just as it is marketed to you (except for that fib concerning the battery life). And it really does hold up in style when placed next to the implacable army of MacBooks that you inevitably meet each time you walk into a cafe or library to work on something.

I bought this to use for my work, which did not involve heavy graphics or such things, but just a simple process of having multiple Microsoft Word windows open together with a couple of Internet tabs open in Google Chrome, one or two Excel files, and one or two more text programs (e.g. Evernote). And this computer is slow with that amount of load. It freezes more often than I would like -about three to four times DAILY -which is a wonder because it's not like I'm running heavy games on it. Is having about six to seven Word documents open together with two or three Internet tabs on Chrome too much for a new laptop to handle? I certainly did not think the i3 processor would be so slow as to be inadequate for my simple tasks.
UPDATE: Had this laptop for about four months now. Of the aforementioned problem, I contacted Acer service center and the man there told me to try reinstalling some drivers (he sent me links). He told me that if that didn't work, to try factory-resetting the laptop. Fortunately, reinstalling the drivers fixed the problem -for three months. After that, the same problem reoccurred -freezing, disability to click, etc., etc. I reinstalled those same drivers again, and the problem has been fixed. I suppose I'll keep doing this every time the problem reoccurs. Other than this, though, the laptop is usually moderately fast and functional.

2 Months UpdateSo I have had the ultrabook for about two months now. For the most part it is still pretty good, but some issues have come up. Firstly, the screen does kinda shake a bit when you move it around and a little when you type. It actually shakes more than you would want a screen to shake. Secondly, my laptop has just started randomly turning off for some reason every few days. I know it is not a virus for sure, so I will look into that. Lastly, at times the fan can get annoyingly loud. Like a little too lound, and there is only one vent on the entire laptop. So that is why this goes from 5 stars to 3 stars.
Original Purchase Review
I had been shopping for an ultrabook for about 2 months for college. I had my eyes set on an acer S3 for a while, but this laptop on Amazon sealed the deal. I got it for 550 dollars at the time of my purchase (That Promo has now expired). But even at its current price. I would highly recommend the purchase. It is a very classy looking ultrabook. The new Champagne Color is really good to look at. I have gotten tons of compliments from friends and Family alike.
As for the performance aspects. The computer runs just as it should. It has instant boot up. Although I would venture to say that the Speed of the ultrabook is nothing to scream about. However, it does assure that I will never buy another computer that is not at least have a partial SSD. The Screen is decent. You get what you pay for, and then some.
If nothing else, the computer is worth buying for its aesthetics.

I've only had my new ultrabook for a month. So far, it's been problem free. I thought it would be difficult to adapt to the very flat keyboard, but it's great. I type VERY fast (over 140 wpm), and it hasn't hampered my speed in the least. Someone commented that the screen shakes when you're typing. I've found that if the laptop is on a stable surface (i.e., table), the screen stays rock steady. The other user might have the lid open too far, causing an instability. I'd recommend adjusting the screen angle, and then it's good. Another negative comment I read was about the touchpad. I can't really comment on that, since I don't care for touchpads, and am using an external mouse. So far, it's fast and reliable, without any problems. My only reason for 4 stars, instead of 5, is that I wish the laptop had more USB ports and the USB port placement. It only has 2 USB ports, and if I need to get something off a flash drive, I have to unplug something else, since I'm often charging my iPad, while using a USB mounted IR mouse. Also, the USB ports are on the back of the laptop -not a great placement. But given the thickness of this laptop, that's about the only place with room to mount the USB's.
Overall, I'm glad I purchased this laptop, and I can recommend it.

Durable frame, and strong hinge for the screen makes it not as light as a notebiik, but its worth the trade off. Excellent battery life as well. Would love to find one for my personal use.I bought this for a first computer for my 7 year old. Her school has online resources for her to learn. I updated the browser and downloaded a free DVD driver and she was ready to go. It has been 5 months and it still works great and it is faster than my husband's desktop. I am very pleased.

I don't own this specific model, however I did purchase the Gateway DS 450XL. My laptop worked well for a year and then the nightmare began. The harddrive and screen went bad. I didn't worry because I had purchased the 3 year warranty. After exhanging numerous calls and shipping my laptop back to Gateway. The lapto was returned. It worked well for 2 weeks. I called Gateway again we spent 45 min. attempting the fix the problem. This was unsuccessful. They wanted me to pay another $40 to send the computer back to them . THe service is unsatisfactory and the computer had never worked properly since the first year. Owning a Gateway Product is a nightmare and trying to keep their produts running well is a full time job. I will NEVER purchase another Gateway product. I wouldn't even accept one as a gift.Read Best Reviews of Gateway M405 Centrino Black Notebook Here

(This was originally a long, somewhat positive review, but too many problems caused a short rewrite.)In a nutshell: the keyboard just sucks. It's horrible, terrible. I can't emphasize enough..if you are normally a fast typist, like I am, then this keyboard will make you mad. It doesn't register keypresses! WTH!
That said, everything else about this little machine is amazing. Screen is beautiful, it's fast, it boots in like 6 seconds! Strangers at the airport (I live at airports) flip when they see this machine.
Still, I'm considering returning it. The keyboard on any machine of mine MUST be an extension of my fingers...

You want a computer that is powerful enough to do real work. You also want something that has great battery life and is really portable. Oh yeah, you want it to look nice too. This machine is terrific and feels rock solid. It also has nice finishes like matching sleeve and case for the included wired ethernet and VGA video out dongles.Pros
Super fast power-on, wake, and shut-down/sleep -> no waiting around for the machine to be ready to do work
The trackpad is silky smooth and very responsive and right clicking is done by pressind down the bottom right corner of the track pad
Very light but rock solid
Brushed metal looks very sleek and feels great
Cons
Two finger scrolling is a bit jerky at times
Takes a bit of practice to learn how to open the clamshell caseAfter reading a lot of reviews about the "flawed" keyboard and trackpad on this laptop, I was hesitant to buy it.
I'm a college student; I was looking for something super-portable to take to grad school, but more powerful than a netbook so I could process data. I admit, I went for the zenbook because, let's face it, it's just so darn cute!
After three months, I'm thrilled with this laptop.
The trackpad works fine. I disabled zoom functions because I kept accidentally zooming, but left on twoand three-finger scrolling, which work fine.
The touchpad will occasionally throw a temper tantrum and start behaving erratically. This happens about once a month, and all it takes to fix is a reboot, which takes about fifteen seconds. It usually happens after I have been using the computer for about a week without a real shut-down(and continuously postponing my update installs).
The keyboard is also fine once you get used to it.
It only took me a couple hours to stop missing keys; you do have to press them with a little more conviction than you do on other laptops, but it doesn't take long to learn.
That said, I'm a petite lady with tiny hands; I find the keyboard comfortable. If you've got bigger hands you might have more trouble.
I like the screen size, too, but my roommates complain that it is too small to watch a movie in a group. Solution: watch the movie on my roommate's laptop. Problem solved.
It is tiny but not fragile. The case that comes with it is attractive and means I don't worry about shoving it in my backpack and running off to class. I also love being able to pick it up with one hand and no effort.
The internet connectivity is great (some other reviews had mentioned bad wireless cards. Mine works perfectly.)
Yes, the power button is on the keyboard where the delete key should be. I've never hit it accidentally, but if I did, it would take about five seconds for me to wake the computer back up, so what's the problem?
To sum up:
Size and portability are awesome.
No trouble with internet.
Trackpad and keyboard are fine once you get used to them.
This laptop makes me happy every time I use it. Even when I am using it to do my Physical Chemistry homework. I am thrilled and recommend it to everyone with no reservations. I hope you love it, too.

I really love this laptop. I first purchased the 13 inch version. I loved it so much that I bought a second one (11") for my wife. both of them are super fast. Resume time is always 2 seconds so it makes it awesome for travel and quick starts. Restart is only 20 seconds. Killer travel machine. Plan on getting a bluetooth mouse. The mouse isnt the best. I use it but it should loose a star or 1/2 star for the mouse. Love them both. I got 25% off retail price during the 2011 holidays. Makes it a no brainer.Fujitsu FPCR33452 LifeBook A1220 15.6" Notebook PC

My only complaint would probably be the absolutely craptastic speakers. Some things I watch I can barely hear the audio on top volume, but headphones fix that just find so it's not that big of a deal. That said, if you want a laptop that can handle whatever you throw at it, this is definitely the way to go. I'm the kind of person who uses my laptop more than any healthy person probably ever should and it's lasted me this long, so for a person who doesn't do a lot of work/entertainment/etc. online, I would highly recommend this laptop.i've had this laptop for a little over 2 years now. now on a search for a new one since my hard drive just crashed. lesson learned to back up more often :/ i've brought this to school many times, it is pretty heavy at over 6 lbs. i really don't know too much about laptops. my dad basically just told me to get this one. i like that it had a lot of USBs. it seemed sturdy enough to bring places. the touch pad wore out probably around a year and a half. it ended up being pretty slow towards the end. i don't think i would buy a fujitsu again. i do think the sturdyness is good though. i have a 20 month old and a dog, there have been plenty of times my 20 month old has pounded on my laptop. probably resulting in the hard drive crash... over all i would say its okay.

I needed and new computer and figured Windows 8 was the future, but designed for a touch screen, so felt that that would be the way to invest. Spent the afternoon, yes it arrived in 16 hours after order placed, playing and feeling comfortable returning to "start" when I couldn't figure any other way to move on....my friends are frustrated, but without a touch screen computer I can understand the reason.....I highly recommend this computer as it is stylish, speedy and fun to work....so far it has been easy to become familiar with the system.Read Best Reviews of Acer Aspire V5-471P-6605 14-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver) Here

This computer is fast, sleek, and advanced for a budget price. The only draw back is that the wifi reception can be a little iffy at times. There has been a few times that my wife and I were sitting right next to each other with laptops at work. Her Lenovo had no apparent issues, whereas this Acer would loose signal or have limited internet connection warnings.Samsung - 15.6" Laptop - 4GB Memory - 500GB Hard Drive - Titan Silver

Stylish Design

Really nice keyboard with numeric keypad
Very clear display
Cons:
Touchpad buttons are a little noisy
Too much bloatware installed
I'm very pleased with this laptop, i highly recommend it and for this price you can't go wrong!!THE ACER ASPIRE IS A FANTASTIC LAPTOP. For the price of $500 Acer has 4GB memory which is fast to run any online game, use it for college, or also to do work. It has 320GB which is alot of space for the laptop. To begin with it has a built in webcam which wasn't describe in the product detail at all. In my opinion I myself would rate this laptop a 10 out of 10 because since this laptop will keep me going for a while. The laptop has not caused any problems for the past 2 months. I would recommend it to anyone that would want to buy a new laptop for a cheap and nice price.I recently replaced an aging Dell Inspiron with this Acer laptop. It is impressively thin and very fast. Where to begin? With 4 GB memory and a fast, dual processor, this 64 bit computer amazed me. Fast enough for gaming? It would be for me! As another reviewer noted, you do need to remove the "bloatware" and free trial crapola, but there was actually less on this laptop than I had experienced on my last three computers. As a side note, the Windows 7 functions flawlessly and may well be the best Windows iteration ever. Add to all the other features easy DVD burning, and it is easy to see why this Acer has impressed me so much. Having had no experience with Acer, I was a bit leery to purchase. After doing some online research, I decided to give it a try. I am very pleased that I did! Your mileage may vary, but I can comfortably give this unit a 5 star rating.Great laptop. It performs everything I want it to do, very quickly. It is a Windows 7, 64 bit system, so I had to down load a lot of 64 bit drivers to use some of my old software. The networking function works great. I can connect and print from anywhere in my home. Price was great too.I purchased this laptop for school 2 years ago and it is still in great condition. The laptop performs and operates as it did on day one. However there are a few issues I would like to bring up. The unit heats up too fast. After about a month, I had to purchase a stand to elevate the rear of the laptop so more air can flow.
Secondly, the battery went bad within six months and I had to send it in for replacement under warranty. Since then the battery works correctly. There was also a problem with warranty issues as Acer kept telling me that the laptop is out of warranty when it was not. I had to fax them my receipt four times for warranty.
With every computer over the shelf, there is unwanted embedded software. I spent the first two hours removing software that had no purpose like Wild Tangent. This Aspire seemed to have every loaded app under the son. After removal of the programs the Aspire performed great.
I would recommend buying this laptop used or new from a reputable source.

My computer arrived 2 days early ... it is in perfect condition , it is the perfect size,I could not be more satisfied and pleased .Thank you, thank you, thank you !!This rating was chosen more for the customer service provided by Best Buys on the Net, which was outstanding, than for the product itself. There is nothing wrong with the laptop...it runs perfect, and meets all my needs. But Windows 8 is NOT user friendly, and takes some getting used to.More than meets my expectations. The only thing I wish it had is the additional number pad that the gateway laptops have.
