Acer 14" i5-480M 2.66 GHz Laptop | AS4743-6481

Acer 14' i5-480M 2.66 GHz Laptop | AS4743-6481Love it so far -

Fast boot up 14" screen is what I wanted. i5 1st Gen seems faster than expected. Built in Intel HD graphics are average. Not recommended for gameplay but for everyday apps its great. Speakers are below average but speaker jack sound is great which works for me.

500 GB HD is 5400 speed. 1.3M camera & Under 5 pounds Perfect.

I received the notebook, in less then two weeks. For a college student, and has not had any problems with it. We have had it for approximatley 1 month now.

I just received my Notebook today, which was very quick, but bummed because the webcam hasn't worked at all, "device not found." Acer is going to fix the problem which is great. Just not happy that I have to send my "new" notebook (I've had it for one day) for service which will take at least two weeks!

HP Pavilion dv4-2170us Intel Core i5, 2.26Ghz, 4GB, 320GB, DVDRW with Lightscribe, White Notebook,

HP Pavilion dv4-2170us Intel Core i5, 2.26Ghz, 4GB, 320GB, DVDRW with Lightscribe, White Notebook, 14.1', Webcam, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bitHad this HP DV4-2170US for just over a week and love it. The keyboard has a nice silky feel to it and responds nicely. Love the "touch" volume and WiFi controls; you basically just slide your finger over the volume level to adjust and just "tap" the WiFi icon to turn it on/off, cool! The screen is nice and has that glossy look that most new laptops have.

I got a pretty good deal on this laptop through Staples. The offer included a $46 instant savings, plus a $50 savings from HP and it was priced pretty low to begin with. I ended up paying ~$670 shipped, tax, etc., not bad for an Intel i5 processor, 14.1" machine with 4GB/320GB HD.

My only issue was that initially, it did recognize my WiFi setup but would not authenticate? I tried resetting my wireless router, rebooted it, reset all the settings, etc., nothing worked! I then finally just reloaded the driver/software for the adaptor (off of HP's site), and that fixed it, go figure!

Battery life could be a bit better, I get just over 3 hours on a full charge which I believe is less than HP indicates (4 hours?), but that's not really a deal breaker. Others have mentioned that the Intel i5 processor is a bit of a power monger, not a bad sacrifice for more speed/power!

Overall, if you don't mind the white cover and keyboard I definitely recommend this laptop.

On a side note, the HP DV4-2160US is the exact laptop (same specs) but with a brownish/plaid cover and black keyboard instead of the white setup on the HP DV4-2170US.

GOOD STUFF: It is fast and quiet. Fit and finish is excellent. Matching accessories add a nice touch. Touch pad behaves predictably. Price ($650) is unbeatable for the specs. External control for volume is a useful feature. Keyboard and touch pad are laid out conveniently.

NOT-SO-GOOD STUFF: It is a little heavier for a laptop of this size. Battery life could be better. Tons of HP bloatware. It gets hot, when the processor is working full throttle for an extended duration.

Overall I love this laptop and there are no major complaints so far.

I bought this computer because I needed a fast processor, and it has that. Unfortunately, the computer has other problems. Not since my 2001 iMac have I had so many technical problems in a new computer. The keyboard is shoddy -a key popped off when I'd been using it for about a month or two, and was very hard to put back on -and there's a nasty glitch with the cursor suddenly going out of control, so that the end of what I type pops up in the middle of a previous word. The touchpad is so user-hostile that I bought an external mouse. HP tech support is frustrating to deal with. All this would be easier to excuse if the computer were cheap, but it wasn't.

Want HP Pavilion dv4-2170us Intel Core i5, 2.26Ghz, 4GB, 320GB, DVDRW with Lightscribe, White Notebook, Discount?

I picked this up at Staples for $649 after rebates, which seems like a great price for an i5 processor. Seems like a nice computer, satisfied so far. But the sounds quality is horrible. I had an HP Pavilion that's 4 years old with no special sound card or anything like that, and it's set up to play through a decent (but not high end) AltecLansing system. I was thrilled with the Pavilion's sound. When I plugged this one in, the drop-off was so noticeable I wondered if I actually had it plugged in correctly. Maybe the sound card is the issue. Who knows? But in any case, if you're not dedicated to excellent sound, this is a good little laptop.

Sony VAIO VGN-Z610Y/B 13.1-Inch Widescreen (Black)

Sony VAIO VGN-Z610Y/B 13.1-Inch WidescreenFor the casual user who needs to browse the web, run basic multimedia, and edit documents, this is a very nice laptop. The fingerprint security system was easy to set up but can occasionally take many tries afterwards to recognize the main user. The screen is wide and offers excellent clarity.

There is no keypad section, which would be a big plus if you are someone who needs to enter numbers and calculations often.

It is weak on processing power and can take forever to boot up, a notoriety with Sony's Vaio bloatware. If you can manage to whittle down on the unnecessary software, this unit can run quite steadily.

First let me say I have always been very pleased with Amazon.com. Several years back I had a bad experience with E-Bay and stayed away from internet purchases altogether. I eased back into internet purchases with Amazon and have been thoroughly pleased ever since. As a matter of fact, Amazon out did themselves this time. I placed my order for this laptop on Thursday May 28 with standard shipping through Advancity. It arrived the VERY NEXT DAY! I love Amazon!

Anyway, now that I got that out of the way, I am very happy with my purchase. After many days of research I decided what features were most important to me. 2.4 Ghz speed was sufficient. 4GB DDR3 SDRAM was hard to find in a laptop, but this one had it. 320 GB SATA hard drive (7200 RPM) was also hard to find but this one had it too. I also wanted Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. If I feel like it, I can always replace it with Windows Microsoft 7 when it becomes available. The 13 inch wide screen is just right. It's weight is only an incredible 3.2 pounds. Battery life seems to be O.K. although I frequently keep my laptop plugged in. It looks and feels great. I really don't have any major complaints. This Sony product is another in a long list of Sony products I own including a 40 inch Bravia LCD TV, digital camera and Bluray player. There are some complaints about the price of Sony products, but I think you pretty much get what you pay for.

When evaluating products for purchase, I feel it's really important to first decide which features are most important to you and are they practical. Price of course fits in there somewhere.

UPDATE: It's been over two weeks since my new Sony laptop arrived. I am still very pleased, especially since I paid Advancity $1,729.00 and today's price is $2.199.00 from Techno Intelligence. Over a $400.00 price increase. Maybe there's a lesson to be learned here. I usually like to see a lot of positive reviews to comfort me in my purchase. Maybe it's not always bad to be the first to buy and review.

UPDATE: Now the computer is no longer for sale. What does this all mean?

UPDATE: Now the computer is $1,999.00. It is a great computer. Pick your price.

UPDATE: March 25, 2009. My Sony Laptop is still going strong. I have no major complaints. The fingerprint identification works well except it takes some getting used to. You have to run your finger over the sensor precisely the same way each time in order to get it to recognize you. I bought a Windows 7 upgrade but haven't installed it yet. I've had absolutely no problems with Vista.

In case anyone is interested, I signed up with an internet company called IYOGI to solve and fix computer problems. On a few occasions where I got over my head they came to the rescue. They are in India (yes, I know) but they have never let me down. They've done an excellent job. On one occasion where they were stumped, they actually sent someone to my home to fix the problem. Incredible! Look into it. Oh yeh, a refurbished model is now $1850.00 Over $100.00 more than I paid new.

Apple iBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 768MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, Internal Combo Drive, 56k Modem

Apple iBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 768MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, Internal Combo Drive, 56k ModemI've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

I have had my ibook for almost 5 years now. I bought it Christmas of '05. I am going to tell the problems I have had with it first because that's probably what your most interested in.

The biggest problem I had was the battery. It worked great for about 3 years then died completely. (this can be expected with any rechargeable battery)

Other than that there have been NO MAJOR PROBLEMS EVER. I have not once taken it in for a tune-up, repair, inspection, ect.

The only minor hindrances are as follows:

The keyboard doesn't light up which makes typing in the dark difficult.

For some reason my hard-drive is almost full so everytime I search for something in the search bar, it runs really slow.

It doesn't use an IBM processor so I guess you can say it is a true blood mac, which makes some programs incompatible.

Now the good stuff:

I actually think that if you consider it was made 5 years ago, it is a better computer than what apple makes now. I was way ahead of its time and it still works great! The user face is really easy, it has done everything I have asked it, it just works. I cannot say enough good things about this computer. If you are just an average computer person looking for a nice little laptop, I highly recommend it. The only reason I'm getting a new one is because I like the camera, faster processor, and added memory. Only after 5 years am I just starting to see it become slightly outdated. I actually think that back in the day apple gave you more for less. This computer came with its own word processing program and a lot of added software. The new ones require you to buy every piece of software. And this one has a removable battery which allowed me to charge 2-3 batteries for road trips and just pop them in as I went through them. I think apple's biggest mistake with the new laptops is the nonremovable battery. When it dies, that's it, find an outlet. And eventually when it completely dies (and it will probably only last 3 years) they want you to pay a technician for labor+parts to put a new one in. It's ridiculous! If you can get this computer for a low price. Go for it!

2 Years Later:

It is now 2012, and my dad is STILL using this laptop every day. I must warn you, it has become outdated to a point where it's really not worth buying. Everything is today's world has become tailored towards Intel processors. But the fact that is still doing what it was built to do is amazing! This mac has served us well, and we certainly got our moneys worth. I highly recommend one of apples new macbooks.

This thing was made 5 years ago and keeps up with my brand new netbook. The battery life is amazing and it runs smooth. The only downside to this computer is the 40gb HD. But with networked and regular external drives, flash memory and such, it not that big of a deal.

All in all, this is my first mac and I love it.

Just recieved my G4 Ibook recently and I can honestly say I love it! im a college student and my pc laptops kept freezing and crashing nonstop! and I really wanted a mac but I didnt have the "mac" money or so I thought. This is my first mac and its life saver! for less than $300 dollars you can have a portable mac that does everything a $1000+ new mac does ( minus the camera)... It does get warm but that isnt a real big issue with me...as far as battery life it doesnt seem to be the greatest, in my case it isnt a problem because I intend on having my charger with me. I think people should consider this computer as a start mac.

This G4 iBook is old (6+ years I believe), it has a small hard drive by current standards, a small screen (near netbook size), and an operating system some view as out of date BUT, the machine is quick has a full GB of memory, has an internal airport extreme card, and if we are really serious about portable computing needs this machine beat the heck out of netbook, at a lower cost and better performance. Old Apples Just Don't Seem To Go Bad at least not as quickly as some more recent machines.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5308 15.6" Laptop

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5308 15.6' LaptopI cannot leave a five star, but for < $500 it was my preferred choice. This computer will sell between $450 and $650(do some online research). My main choices of CPU were I5, A6 in that order. Compared the Toshiba side by side for mechanical features at an electronics store. Initial dislike of Toshiba was the touch mouse pad. It has become more smooth with additional usage. While lowering or closing the top of the laptops, Asus and Gateway went into hibernate mode before the screen was halfway closed. The Toshiba would go into hibernate mode when lowered 90% of the way(the wife likes you to show some respect by closing the laptop). The keyboard touch is excellent, smooth, and quiet. The screen is great with color and clarity. The video itself is good for 4Gb Ram, but high end gamers will not agree with the graphics(they usually do custom computers). I can spend $20 to expand it to 6GB(search the internet and you will find a good deal on memory). My main concern so far is the disk drive. There is a sensor and timer in the electronics that performs a check exactly every 10 minutes(it is a medium click sound, and lasts 2 seconds). This noise does not occur when playing a DVD movie, and movie glitches did not occur). I still need to try the HDMI port to check a feature larger screen(another feature I liked when looking, and I saw the feature on another PC in the store). The graphite color and surface does not show smudges or fingerprints. The mouse buttons are loud, and may not be good while your wife is sleeping(but wait). There is a button in the center just below the space bar, that will allow you to disable the touch pad features so that you can use a mouse (your choice). Three USB ports with average distances apart. The audio and mic jacks are on the side of the laptop. And the final feature is the AC plug. It looks like Toshiba is trying to address the problems consumers have had in the past(including me). But, considering the past problems of the AC/Jack, and the noise of the DVD drive, I still want to keep this computer.

It came on time, and works OK.

Toshiba Satellites seem to have a much better long-term track record than many of the other laptops, so I went with this. For the small difference in price, it was well worth going with the i5 processor (over the i3). Not so sure it would have been worth going to an i7. Maybe a little bulky to carry around all day, but it's worth it for the pluses of the 15"+ screen and full size keyboard.

Has everything you NEED, and a few things that you probably WANT. Not a dream machine, but definitely a workhorse.

Good value.

I purchased this laptop at Best buy. Exactly 13 months after purchase, its parts started failing one after the other. I have already replaced the display panel, had to find alternatives for a defunct audio out jack, unreliable DVD drive and am facing overheating problems. It seems to be an inexpensive product but the cost of getting it repaired after a year or so is a real nightmare. Warranty extension is a must. Thats the only way to shield yourself from problems you will face after one year or so after purchase... due to its poor build quality. Buying this was a big mistake. Will stay away from Toshiba products in the future.

HP ENVY 17-2070NR Notebook Computer - Silver

HP ENVY 17-2070NR Notebook Computer - SilverWell, this is my first time doing a review on here, but becuase of how few reviews I have been able to find on this laptop, I figured I should share my thoughts on it.

First off, the packaging was amazing! You can tell they really took their time when designing the way this product would be shipped and opened for first use.

The look and feel of this laptop is also really good. It feels really strong and not made out of some cheap materials. I love how it comes with ZERO stickers on the laptop that display what is it in. The laptop is very sleek and clean looking. I also love the custom theme that it is for Windows 7. It is also very simple and clean. It is a LOT better than the default windows 7 theme. The keyboard is also very well made and I love the backlighting.

However, this amazing laptop also has some flaws that I wish I knew about BEFORE purchasing this item. I had no idea that the other Envy products (Envy 15 for example), suffer from black or blank screen problems! At random (normally when the computer is sitting without being used for a short time) the screen will just fade to black. If you look really hard from certain angles you can see the desktop, but its so dark you cannot shut down the computer. This also happens nearly 100% of the time when you close the screen and return to your computer after a short time. From what I have read online, the only "fix" for this is to close the screen again or hold the power button until it restarts. Also, HP does not seem to see this has a problem with the computer, however just google HP envy 17 Black Screen and you will see all the issues people are having with this. HP just seems to replace the computers. Hopefully a fix will come out soon, but nobody can seem to figure out what causes this issue.

Another problem I have been having is the random freezing. I will be doing nothing no downloads, no music playing, just simply sitting at the desktop and the computer will freeze. Again, the only fix for this is to hold down the power button until it turns off. Also, this issue is like the black screen problem. I have not found anybody that has been able to pinpoint the cause of this problem to get it fixed.

Finally, the last problem is the heat! Man does this thing produce heat. It could heat up a house in the winter! With only ONE vent in the side of the computer that is in a really poor location, this thing is hard to cool down. I had to purchase a massive cooling pad to help keep it cool. Also, the place that seems to heat up the worst is to the left of the mousepad (which sucks as well) which if you are a gamer, that is not a good location. You will be resting your palm here to use the WASD keys for many of the games and your hand will get extremely hot.

Overall, I really want to like this computer, but with the issue I am having, I don't know if I will be keeping it or returning it to Amazon. If I can figure out a fix for the random black screens or freezes, I will keep it since I can deal with the heat now that it has a pad. However, the random freezing and the black screens are a deal breaker for a laptop that costs SO much money. You would think that since the black screen problem was a major issue with the Envy 15 that they would have fixed it for the Envy 17, but like I said, HP does not seem to see this as a problem.

EDIT: Well I have been dealing with HP support through e-mail and they are being anything but helpful at this point. Sure they reply to e-mails EXTREMELY fast for such a major company, but you can tell all their answers are canned replies that have already been typed and they simply copy and paste. For example, in the last e-mail from them, they gave me the instructions to do something on my computer for Windows XP...did they even check to see what the heck the laptop was?!?! Does HP even have laptops that have XP on them anymore? So far, after three e-mail messages and tons of research online, none of the problems I mentioned in the first review have been fixed. Buy at your own risk, but HP doesn't seem to understand the problems people are having with this machine.

Out of the box this machine is extraordinary, The packaging alone tells you, you just bought a different type of laptop(very high end) perfectly packed with a couple of very nice extras(nothing big but I won't spoil the surprise)if you like bells and whistles this laptop has them all, aluminum case and the look of the etching is incredible and feels really solid (which is very good, having seen broken or bent motherboards and screens due to flimsy cases) beautiful LED screen, chicklet type illuminated keys, slot load BD player, extra long lasting battery...the works. Ok performance. Turning it on I was amazed by how quick this machine is and I have been around PCs and laptops all teen-adult life so I can tell you, you won't be disappointed. specs are up on the product description, but they are MISSING the best parts. This is a new i7 2.0 GHz processor (CPU) and it is quad core (4 CPU in one) BUT! with "hyper-threading" so if you don't speak geek what it means is that you virtually have (and you will see in your task manager) 8 (eight) 2.0 GHz processors running simultaneously this is awesome. Now to me the most important missing spec is that this is a HM65 chipset, what this means is that it comes available with blazing fast SATA 3 hard drive interface..in all my latest laptops this has been the performance bottleneck even with an SSD hard drive (downside, the laptop comes with 2 500Gb SATA 2 Hard drives. upside they come in RAID 0(you will see just one big disk on your explorer), which is a lot faster than normal setups.)but if you want the extra performance of SATA 3 you will have to buy a new HD. Last thing it has great battery life due to the double video card, so, on power saver, low performance video card and dimmed screen, I can get up to 3 hrs with the 6 cell battery. OK for us geeks that can't leave well enough alone...the laptop comes with 4gb + 2Gb RAM very bad! so BUY 8Gb RAM package and a SSD HD that is SATA 3 compatible (and a SSUSB (or USB 3.0) external enclosure to put the extra HD once your done), you will have to do a new windows install so download your drivers from HP except the SSUSB this one download it from a HP probook which is the same driver but newer and better (don't know why), and an updated video driver...I can't start to tell you how fast this machine turns out! by now you can see that I like computers, this one blew mi mind and I haven't over clocked it yet...hope this helps...long winded and all.

Buy HP ENVY 17-2070NR Notebook Computer - Silver Now

I just got the HP 2070NR to use as a development work station. So far I've been extremely happy with the purchase.

I have my 2070 running XUbuntu 11.04 AMD64. There were a few quirks specific to this laptop (that will probably effect anyone using Linux on it regardless of distro), one of which is the "click-pad" and the other of which is the hybrid graphics card. I had to patch and build a new package to get the track pad working correctly, but it wasn't really a big deal so I'm not deducting a star for it. You can find that answer on bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/582809 (#144). The other thing is you don't want to use fglrx (proprietary drivers) on it, as fglrx does not work with vgaswitcheroo (the Linux kernel facility for switching graphics cards) yet... I'm sure AMD will come out with a fix for it eventually, but for the moment only the opensource radeon drivers work.

Other than fglrx not working and the touchpad behaving weird, everything on this laptop worked out of the box on Ubuntu (wireless, wired network card, sound, even the web cam).

One thing I wanted to note about the two hard drives is they come configured in a Raid0 configuration and the array controller only supports Raid0 (no raid1/mirrored). I had kind of been hoping to mirror my hard drives with a hardware controller... But that isn't really a big deal either because what other laptop comes with 2 hard drives and an array controller?

I'm really happy with this laptop so far. I've had it for 3 days now, and it's definitely a huge step up over my previous laptop. I can run Netbeans, Eclipse, Jboss, Banshee, and a VirtualBox without any problems... This laptop had everything I was looking for in a laptop specs wise, and then some.

As far as battery life:

If you use the 6-cell battery, and aren't doing anything too intense, it should get close to 2 hours.

If you use the 9-cell battery and aren't doing anything too computationally intense, it'll be closer to 3.5.a)

That isn't really amazing battery life for a laptop, but when you consider what a monster this thing is, 17 in display, 2x 7200 RPM drives, i7 quad, discreet graphics, it does a bit better than what I'd expect. I have to give them credit, they built a machine designed to behave much like a desktop, and it still has a usable battery.

As far as build quality goes:

I've always been an HP fan, but I've always hated the pavilion and other home computers. I've always bought the business laptops and workstations. I have to say, HP has addressed a lot of the problems I've had with the pavilions and some of their other home computers being crappy computers. This computer is built like one of their business models, and not only that it's really nice looking. It performs really well, has great hardware, and was at a much more desirable price point than some of their other offerings.

Very, very well packaged. The unit is very sleek and it runs very quietly. Backlit Keyboard was just what I wanted. Very good. The Display was great.

But upon first use, this unit would freeze up and not respond to any commands. I had to turn the power off using the Power Button. Then upon turning it on again it would run for a few hours (or sometimes a only few minutes) then freeze up again. I had to recycle the power button to get it back on.

HP Customer Service was very courteous (and they spoke English). I talked with them 4 or 5 times in the first fews days after receiving the PC, they seemed to know what they were doing and I got the same department each time I called. They even called ME back to see how I was doing. (The technicians I spoke with knew the other technicians I had spoken to, so I didn't have to keep explaining the problem over and over again)

But everything we tried failed to fix the problem. HP finally suggested returning the unit. Thinking the problem was hardware vs. software.

I did send the unit back to Amazon. Amazon offered me an exchange or my money back. Amazon has good customer service also.

So if you get a unit that freezes up at any time, make sure you call HP for help. They told me this was not an uncommon problem but new HP BIOS usually fixes the bug. (They also said my unit may have set on the shelf for a while, and that newer units come with the newer version BIOS)

HP Customer Service was the BEST customer support I have ever had to use.. too bad the unit wasn't as good..

Hp Envy 17-2070nr. So far I believe its an amazing laptop. Havent had a single problem, its extremely fast and it came flawless. Hopefully I will not have any problems in the future but if I do I will update.

It did took me a few minutes to get used to the trackpad, but got used to it.

I was afraid of buying because I could not find any reviews but I am glad I took the risk.

edit:

I had some issues with it freezing, supposedly the culprit was the wireless card, but I simply did a clean install of Windows 7 from the partition recovery, and the problem seems to be fixed. i brought it down to four because i shouldn't have to be fixing a brand new computer specially a 1400 dollar computer, but i did because i really love the feel and performance of the computer.

Acer Aspire V3-771G-6851 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

Acer Aspire V3-771G-6851 17.3-Inch LaptopHello,

This is a really good laptop for the price. When I first buy this i thought it would be too big, cause it's 17.3. But I was wrong It's Perfect! And it's not heavy.

It also heave a really good ventilation system, Keeps it really cool.

Beside that I can play almost every game in Market with good settings. I can play Dota 2 everything on maximum with 0 lag, it did not tested other games yet tough.

But, for 700 bucks it's a really good deal! RECOMEND.

So far so good, ive been testing it for a few days and runs everything smoothly, nice temps, its also quiet....

im able to play borderlands 2 at 720p everything maxed out at 40-60 fps, i havent tested BF3 yet but i figured it shouldnt have any problems, in conclusion the 640m is a very capable gpu backed up by an incredible ivy i5 processor

the build quality seems quite solid, usb 3.0 ports are pretty much appreciated..

on another hand the screen doesnt have a good view angle so it could be a pain if you dont watch it right in front

bottom line, very good laptop for the price, if you dont need a huge gaming laptop but still want to play some decent games get this one!

I run it on "medium" settings flawlessly and it still looks really good. The game automatically put my settings on medium but I wanted to see how it played on higher settings. I tried playing on both high and ultra settings which surprisingly worked pretty well. The FPS was pretty playable even on ultra however the computer would run a little hot so I keep it on a very playable tweaked medium setting (tweaked as in I set a few of the settings to high). Still looks/plays great. If your into games a little older like Skyrim, you will be pleased to know this computer can handle Skyrim pretty well on high settings. I haven't played Skyrim to much on this laptop so I don't know if having a large battle raging around you may slow it down or not but I'm sure if it does you can tweak the options a bit to make it run great again.

So overall I am very pleased with how this computer runs games. Its got a great i5 3rd generation processor, decent webcam, a little heavy but that's to be expected of a 17 incher. The battery isn't all that great, but I'm sure most people will keep this guy plugged in, especially considering how large this computer is. The touchpad is just ok, a little wonky. But just as with the battery, I am sure most people will use a USB mouse so it is a non-issue. Windows 8 is meh. Its not bad but I prefer windows 7. Desktop mode does a decent job of simulating windows of olde but adding a mod to include a start button may be needed for those of us who were perfectly fine with windows 7 or even XP. (I still try to forget about Vista) However this is software, not hardware so it doesn't really change my rating, besides W8 is completely workable, just a little ugly, for me anyway. Also, if I were a little less impressed by the guts of this computer I would have knocked a star for the purely aesthetic problem of a super finger-print friendly paint job. Seriously. Finger prints LOVE this big guy. Otherwise for the price (and I did a LOT of browsing and comparing) this is an excellent computer for budget minded gamers.

This laptop was a steal considering i bought it for only $650. Looked every to find this latop for a lower price but it could not be achieved. Newegg had it for $750 and acer had it for $ 720. It play modern games with no problems. At first i hated windows 8 but i know love it. It just takes time to get use to.

While I did have 1-day shipping, the laptop came well packaged and in perfect condition. I first opened the box to see a VERY large and shiny new laptop and began to mess with it. Turned it on, typed in my preferences, and got going in about 5 minutes. There was not a whole lot of bloatware; it was gone fairly quickly. Over the next few hours, I learned about all of the wonderful features that I did not pay attention to when I bought it.

Pros:

*Large screen; 1600x900 resolution

*Bright colors

*Great Processor, Nice RAM, good Graphics card

*plays all of my games on highest graphics with no problems (LoL, GW2, D3, minecraft)

*Runs quiet

*Dolby Home Theater; the sound bar sounds almost like surround sound. The sound is simply amazing.

*HD camera / Mic

*Windows 8 is AMAZING

*Fantastic internet connection

*Dual Hard drive support

Cons:

*Kind of slow Hard drive; this is okay because there is support to put in an SSD (only costs around $100)

*ultra finger print magnet

*Being a gaming Laptop, you are going to have a low battery life and there is really nothing you can do about this no matter which gaming laptop you get, even being low end as this one is. However, this is okay because you will have it plugged in all of the time anyway since the laptop can run in high performance when it is plugged in.

*Being a glossy type screen, the colors are brighter, but it is very glary outside. This is also not a big deal because you will need it plugged in most of the time anyway.

Final Thoughts:

I love to play games, but I needed a laptop over a desktop and I needed it to be cheap. $700 for a low end gaming laptop is an amazing price (This would be a good price for even a desktop). Other laptops with the same stats should go for $900-$1000, but Acer is a great company with an amazingly low price. With all of the extra features, this is, BY FAR, the best laptop you could possibly buy for only $700. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a gaming laptop on a budget.

So I come home today and my power jack is cracked and it got pushed in, completely trashed; I have to find a way to fix it myself. I call acer and ask them if it's covered in the warranty and they told me that it would cost $199 to fix a power jack that is pushed back. I'm not going to buy anything from this company again, I am genuinely disappointed in Acer for this. The laptop is made of cheap plastic and it's only a matter of time before everyone has the same complaints as me. Don't buy this laptop.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S 15.5-Inch Silver Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S 15.5-Inch Silver LaptopSince my previous laptop is now technically in two pieces due to the plastic bezel of the monitor breaking, I wanted a laptop that could withstand wear and tear of daily use without compromising on flexibility. After looking at the other brands around the same price point, I felt the VAIO NW was superior in terms of the design and durability. Having used it for a few days now, I am very happy with this product and I would recommend it to others.

I purchased the sony vaio VGN-NW270F. Initially I was happy with it and the blue-ray. Shortly however I noticed when I charged the laptop to 100% and turned the laptop off,24 hours later the battery would be at 90% or less. This issue is common on ALL newer vaios, google it if you do not believe me. Search "Sony Vaio battery drain". Sony will not release a "fix" for it,in fact in one customer service report they describe this as a feature. The battery life never exceeds 2.5 hours either (4 hours listed). I jumped the gun big time buying this laptop. Do your research, now I will take a 85% hit in return price and need a new laptop for school starting January.

In short, You can't go wrong for the price of this laptop!

After playing around with every brand of laptop at various stores it was clear to me that Sony does design better than anyone but mac. The overall feel is better than the competition. The track pad has a unique texture of raised dots that keeps fingers from sticking, and is very precise. The key board is well proportioned, the space between keys allows for more accurate typing than many of the newer keyboards that feel like one giant flat key.

The screen is beautiful, it is glossy so it looks mirror like, but suffers from minimal reflection. It is 780P which is fine when you are looking at a 15.5in screen. Bright, rich colors are refreshed quickly in fine detail. Bluerays played on a 1080p TV looked perfect via the hdmi output, zero hesitation.

The speakers are good. Average volume, but sound great.

The box is slightly lighter than similarly priced laptops, the textured waves look nice and do not collect finger prints. The folding action is smooth and firm.

Microsoft word opens in about 2.5sec.

The battery life seems less than advertised, 2.5hrs is about all I get. It could use better controls for volume, one must use FN>Fx keys to adjust volume/brightness.

I'm happy, at $715 it was worth the extra $50-75 over similarly configured laptops, (none of which had a blueray payer). I'd rather have the Sony design than $75 worth of extra gigawatts.

I am a self proclaimed apple fan (not a fanboy) -as I a have an imac, macbook air, 2 iphones, and too many ipods to mention and all I can say is that this is a sweet computer I always keep a pc around b/c I dont like to run parallels or other programs to run on my mac --and I usually use a netbook just for size. I saw this at bestbuy (699) and was intrigued. The specs are awesome and the fact that it has a bluray drive with HDMI out sealed the deal. So far so good -it's really fast -at least compaired to my old sony viao w netbook (I tried the new viao x but that was slow as molasis too actually took a 15% hit -200 bucks to return it). It is pretty nice looking -I kinda dig the texture. It is really heavy -I would not use this to carry around all the time (macbook air is much better for that) -but overall this is a great computer at a great price (sorry amazon it is cheaper at best buy and not even on sale there)

Dell Inspiron 15 15.6" Laptop, AMD Dual-Core E-450 1.65GHz, 4GB, 320GB, AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics

Dell Inspiron 15 15.6' Laptop, AMD Dual-Core E-450 1.65GHz, 4GB, 320GB, AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics, Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive,Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitI had been looking for some time for a good deal on a below $450 laptop running Windows 7 (not because I like running Windows, it is just outside my budget to purchase a Linux machine also). I always prefer Dell because of the quality and the excellent technical support (just try to get an HP computer repaired under warranty) but was having trouble breaking that $400 line. When I saw this M501R laptop offered for $369, I ordered it very quickly, just doing a quick scan of its capabilities and reputation on the net. 4 GB RAM, dual core processor (don't mind this moderately powerful AMD chip since I am not doing video processing or the like on this machine), 500 GB HD (5400 RPM is slow, but for Internet and document, photo processing it is fine), CD/DVD read and write (don't usually see this included on a below $400 machine), big (15.6 inch) screen with fairly nice resolution (hey, what do you want for this price)---not quite as precise display as the higher priced dispalys but my wife likes it fine for TV and movies anyway, Windows 7 Home Supreme (whatever---no one sells lower than "Supreme") keeps you in the MS monopoly plot for now, though I do recommend using OfficeLibre (used to be Open Office---free superior equivalent to Microsoft Office handles all document processing needs and is compatible with MS) as I did to avoid purchasing overprices MS stuff, and GIMP if you are an Adobe Photoshop user but don't have a spare grand lying around. Good audio---run the output into a laptop stereo stand. Windows Live Movie Maker is a plus with Windows 7, giving you pretty nice YouTube video production capability. Don't need an email application since GMAIL and HOTMAIL have great web interfaces. Jump on this!

I'm a college student and this laptop does everything I could possibly need, very happy with my purchase. It's been 6 months since I bought it and everything still works as good as the day I bought it.

First of all, I bought this at best buy, paid 429.98 with tax added. It is very thin for a budget laptop. Yes its made out of the same hard crappy plastic all american car interiors had a few years back, yes it doesn't have the fastest processor, and can get dirty but you have to remember that you're not paying much.

Using the built in HDMI port I connected the laptop to my 55inch 1080p hd tv and using an app called WIFI Mouse HD, i could use my phone as a mouse and keyboard on a 55in tv. The fan is super quiet as well.

The Laptop comes with something called WAVES MAXXAUDIO which is supposed to make movies and games and music sound "extra sweet" what it really does is make the sound reach further away but makes the sound sound tinny. Not really that great. Battery isn't bad nor good. The Web Camera is also not good nor bad,

Overall, this is the best laptop to buy for the price. I recommend you buy it here to save yourself at least 50$ for most ppl who don't need to pay tax on Amazon.

I thougt the low price and the fact that it had Windows 7 made it worth the risk of buying. Never again. With this computer, I have to be very careful when typing a message, even as I'm doing now, because the cursor jumps around to another spot in the message. And frequently, I mean very frequently, I had to troubleshoot to get it to connect to the internet when other wifi devices in the house worked just fine. Annoying. Also no number keys pad, but I could have lived with that. I rarely write negative reviews, but this was a very poor choice on my part. I'm going to save up and get a good one next time.

Update: The company has been very prompt in responding, and has said they would accept a return with a restocking fee (which is perfectly understandable since I'm sure they have to go into the computer to make sure you have deleted all your personal stuff, etc.). So the company seems wonderful, but not this particular laptop.

ASUS A55A-TH52 Laptop Computer - 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz, 6GB DDR3, 750GB HDD, Bl

ASUS A55A-TH52 Laptop Computer - 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz, 6GB DDR3, 750GB HDD, Blu-ray Player/DVDRW, 15.6' Display, Windows 8 64-bitThe A55A-TH52 is awesome. I was worried when I ordered it that maybe ASUS was getting rid of old stock. I am pretty sure this is the first review for this PC anywhere. Windows 8 is OK, I love Windows 7, and this is basically 7 with some extras as far as I can tell.

The laptop is very well constructed, and has all of the standard ASUS features... so don't worry:

(2) USB 3.0 ports, Wi-Fi 802.11, IceCool... this is basically the same as A55A-AB51 with the RAM and BluRay upgrade.

The reviews for the AB51 had complaints for the spacebar ? Most of these people said they were good at typing... their complaint must have something to do with home row? Anyway, I have no issues with it... and I actually like that it has a full number keypad like a standard keyboard.

I currently have a Lenovo for my work laptop that is a much lower grade device than this. I have had multiple Dell Latitude laptops over the years. I really liked the Dell D610, and D630 models. This ASUS is easily on par with them for hardware quality.

I have read complaints on other models about speaker quality. This is a laptop. It has the best sound quality of any laptop I have ever had or used, it is louder with solid sound quality. If you expect deep base sounds from laptop speakers, you will be disappointed with this laptop, and probably life in general.

Touchscreen seems just right to me. Maybe it is better with the windows 8 drivers? This machine seems fast and efficient.

EDIT:

I used the DVD/BluRay some through the HDMI, and I had some disappointment before adjusting settings.

*Hardware acceleration should be turned on for battery mode in the ASUSDVD settings

*Most of my disappointment was with the non-upgraded version of PowerDVD. The software limited the DVD output to Stereo, and offered an upgrade to give 5.1 Surround output, on BluRay I was limited to MONO! ***THE FIX*** My surround system and many others can decode digital audio signals, so you can get the full audio your surround system is capable of producing. Play a DVD, click the Hammer/Screwdriver icon, select audio settings, on the pulldown menu for output mode select "Non-Decoded Dolby Digital/DTS Audio to External Device".

Easy to use, OK webcam, fast start-up, light for it's size, easy to use keyboard, right click on mouse pad is difficult to use, overall a good laptop for the price Like windows 8....

Dell Mars Black 15.6" Laptop PC with Intel Core i5-480M Processor, 6GB RAM, 640GB Hard Drive, Windo

Dell Mars Black 15.6' Laptop PC with Intel Core i5-480M Processor, 6GB RAM, 640GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home PremiumI was looking for a great laptop that would be able to respond to all my digital needs and hopefully I found this.

With a 6GB RAM, this laptop can handle everything you could simultaneously. You will love the the extra light weight, you barely feel anything on your lap.

SRS Premium Sound integrated gives you a complete personalization of your sound quality. As on the description, you have a 640GB Hardrive that will hold all your musics, videos, games, movies, etc...

I also found the Intel Turbo Boost Technology very handy when it comes to run heavy programs at the same time, it gives you that extra boost(up to 3Ghz)when you need it.

Bluetooth also integrated (couldn't ask for more). Battery life is pretty decent for a Windows laptop(up to 4hrs on Balanced power plan).

Sleek and professional design.

Webcam can deliver HD videos which is simply amazing.

Finally, the processor is so "robust" that even when you have many programs running at the same time, your CPU usage is usually less than 20%.

Great value for the price, would greatly recommend it to laptop buyers.

Toshiba - Satellite 15.6' Laptop - 4GB Memory - 500GB Hard Drive - Satin Blackit works great. windows 8 takes some getting used to but it works good. it doesn't have backlit keys so if you compute in the dark you need a light. its a beast of a computer in the price range its in.

Incredible! I have owned several quality laptops and after heavy debate I decided to see what this Toshiba could do. I am pleased beyond compare.... twice, no, three times the machine I expected. great design, keyboard, mouse, features etc etc. I had a machine that I paid twice the price for and I lived with the glitches, poor design and battery life for 3 years before purchasing this laptop. Fortunately, my older machine was dropped breaking the display and now I get to enjoy this new laptop. If looking for a quality computer at a very affordable price you will not be disappointed.

I purchased the Toshiba brand after having an HP for several years. This laptop has a terrific connection to the internet. Windows 8 takes some time getting used to it but it's not as difficult as some people say. The computer is very lightweight and portable. The speakers could be better but, all in all, it's a pretty good computer for the money.
