Sony VAIO(R) VPCF13SFX/B Signature Series 16.4" Notebook PC - Black

We recently purchased this laptop to serve as a portable gaming machine. Also, was waiting for one with USB 3.0, which this one has. There is very little to complain about with this model. It's fast with a great screen display. I will list a few nit picks here. Screen in bright lights is a bit glary while gaming. It does get warm but not hot, I would recommend one of the laptop fan units to place under it. I'm not a fan of the mouse drag on any laptop so an external mouse was a must for me, as was a headset (built in speakers are a bit bright sounding and bass shy). Battery life is good unless into heavy gaming but I usually use the external power anyway. Since it is a gaming rig, all other functions run very smooth; movies, live video, favorite TV shows, etc. Oh yeah, the keyboard has one of the nicest feels of all I tried and the matt finish does not show up finger prints. I probably should have given this 5 stars but I am a bit tight on my recommendations.

Having said that, this model is highly recommended.

this is an excellent laptop, real HD graphics, fast, ultra light and portable.

I've always had Gateway computers, and if there was ever a problem, customer service was helpful and never expensive. They make it easy. I bought this laptop for my son 6 months ago and another for me 2 months ago. Speed is fantastic, graphics nice! And, it does not heat up at all. My son takes his to college and it lasts plenty long on the battery. Price is rightt too! I recommend Gateway to anyone who loves a good, reliable computer, with great customer care.

Samsung Series 3 NP300E5C-A0DUS Notebok Laptop / Intel Pentium processor B980 / 15.6" LED / 4GB DDR

After buying a different laptop which had horrible audio I went to the retailer and bought this laptop primarily for the sound. It does sound good, but obviously not a boom box. The last one (different brand) was just plain horrible. This one performs well. Battery life seems to be very good. It came with a 4GB memory chip installed and there was an available memory slot so I was able to install another 2GB SODIMM, so now running 6GB. This laptop doesn't have a numlock led which is kinda weird. All in all its easy to use, keyboard is nice, mouse/touchpad is appropriately responsive, screen is bright and crisp. Has Bluetooth, which is good for transferring files. Was the only one I found with BT. Lid seems sturdy. I would recommend.

i absolutely love this notebook, bought at best buy and do not regret it one bit! has an awesome 17.3" screen with hd 1600x900 screen, 3rd gen i5 processor that is the quickest i have ever seen in a notebook. there is absolutely no hesitation at all.

the sound system on this laptop is not missing anything, you will be surprised. i have never had a laptop with a sound system like this, i downloaded and watched battleship on this the other day and the sound was amazing. it has built in harman/kardon audio speaker sound system that actually gets really loud and stays oh so clear. before, i have always had to buy external speakers with a laptop, but not this one.

and totally new to me, this comes with 6gb ram upgradeable to 16gb ram, ive never had a laptop upgradeable to that much ram before. it has 4 usb ports and all are usb 3.0. hdmi input, dvd player/burner, card reader, and i love the high speed start...you can close the lid and when you reopen it starts up instantly, with no hesitation, also has hdd ssd head protection, if you bump your laptop on something or drop it, it goes into protection mode and secures the hdd ssd from damage, i picked it up the other day and bumped it on the arm of my chair and it came up on the screen saying my hdd/ssd was currently being protected, as soon as shaking settles down it goes back to normal state, really cool. also comes equipped with diagnostic tool and health monitor, plus facial recognition and sleep utility. includes eco utility and toshiba assist.

this computer is lacking in nothing except one thing......no bluetooth, but thats a small price to pay for everything else you get. the etched aluminum body is awesome, you dont have to worry about finger prints or anything like that. you will not regret this laptop it is really the greatest i have ever purchased and i have owned quite a few laptops. not to mention, its one of the top "satellite" laptops made by toshiba.

i think the price is very reasonable for the quality/hardware and software included. oh and it also comes with microsoft office starter for free. also included is google chrome and microsoft silverlight.... oh i forgot, also comes with intel widi...this is a great deal. overall, it really purrs like a kitten, lol.

Loved this laptop. It was great for the 1 week I got to use it. HATE Toshiba Customer Service.

Toshiba has this great software that reminds you of software updates, driver updates, etc. Everyday, it reminded me that I needed to update my BIOS firmware (required/recommended update). Against my better judgement, I did this and sure enough it killed the PC.

I called Toshiba and their rep told me "oh, we don't recommend people update the BIOS firmware". Except their software update has it as a REQUIRED update and bugged me every day for a week. Turns out that if your BIOS firmware is hosed, then you are totally out of luck and have to return it to the depot for repair. Oh and you have to pay to get it sent (approx $26).

So I send the PC into the repair depot for repair. I get a email with a web-link to check on the status of the repair. The estimated time for any repair is 10 working days. On the 10th day, I get a status update which says "will need new part. will add additional 10 days". Need a new part??? How about just loading the old BIOS?? I can't even imagine how expensive this would be if it wasn't under warranty.

After the additional 10 days, I go to check the status and suddenly there is no record of my repair. I wait a few days and check again. Same thing.

I call to find out if I can find the status. I get the automated answering service and faithfully follow directions to "check on depot repair status". I choose this option and it says "check website link" and hangs up on you.

I call again and finally get a hold of someone (don't try check depot repair status, it just hangs up on you). They tell me that the repair depot is waiting on a part. I ask them why the web-link status doesn't seem to reflect that. They don't know. I ask them when was the information updated, they tell me more than 2 weeks ago. I explain that I am getting mixed messages since his update is the same one I saw sometime back but the website link for the repair does not have any record of my repair. I explain that I am worried that my laptop has been lost, sent back already, or something. I am told to check back in a week and they will have an update.

I check back today (its been a week) on the website link and now the repair link has completely expired and wont even pull up.

At this point I am not even sure I have a laptop anymore. But I really liked it for the 1 week.

UPDATE:

Received the PC back from Toshiba Repair Depot yesterday. PC hard drive had been completely wiped clean (seems unnecessary) and today it does not work again and I have to return it back to Toshiba.

I turn on the PC and it asks me to setup windows all over again. Halfway through it hangs and sits there for 2 hrs doing nothing. I turn off the power and reboot and then it says that there is a problem and it won't reboot.

I call customer service and they run me through the procedure to reboot from partition. Part of the procedure requires you to take out the battery. I turn the pc over and notice that the hard drive cover is open. Also the motion has caused the hard drive to pop out of its slot. I replace the hard drive and reboot. The laptop now doesn't even recognize that a hard disk is available. So now my call gets elevated to a Toshiba case manager.

I get the Toshiba Case manager and they tell me that I will have to return it back to the depot. As in the same repair depot that wiped my hard drive and sent me back a non-working pc. I explain the whole story outlined above and tell them that since the hard drive is completely wiped clean and I don't want to wait months getting my PC back, that I just want a new PC (same type, etc). I am informed that they absolutely will not do a replacement. I ask to speak to someone else and am told there isn't any one else. They do not elevate above case manager (which is only one level above the tech support btw). I ask if they can at least prioritize getting my PC back to me since it came back from the Repair Depot broken. I am informed they don't do this either.

I am NEVER buying another Toshiba again.

This is the third Toshiba laptop in our house and all three have been working like a charm. The oldest laptop is two years old and working great. The second is just over a year, no issues. I'm looking forward to many great days/months/years with this laptop. I will have to say I'm impressed with the performance and style of this laptop. This is MY first Toshiba and I love it!! Other laptops owned ASUS and IBM. This Toshiba is up there!!!

I purchased the HP G60-237NR notebook PC in February for less than 550.00. This laptop has all the features and ports I needed. I have had good customer service from HP when I had questions. I have Vista and we bought this same laptop for my Mom last month at Amazon with the new Windows7. I would recommend this laptop for the average user. I use it for email, shopping the web, MS application software, Skype, LinkedIn, DVD play, and watching Hulu tv over the web. The volume was not loud enough to watch a DVD movie while on vacation in our RV so I bought small external speakers to plug in at a cost of less than $30.00.

I'm quite happy with the laptop as-shipped. The packing was good, and the laptop arrived in good condition. It comes with a little pad of paper, some other misc junk, and a cloth for polishing the case. The shiny case, by the way, is one of two drawbacks. It looks pretty with most surfaces being shiny, but the glossy black cover constantly has fingerprints (and palm prints) on it. A positive to the shiny surface is that it's relatively easy to peel off all of the NASCAR-level of sponsor labels. The other drawback to this laptop is that it doesn't have built-in Bluetooth. Seriously. It has a Wireless N interface which I'm pretty sure wasn't even an approved standard when this was made but no Bluetooth? Oh well. I had a Kensington Bluetooth adapter which is one of those little ones that you leave in a USB port, and it works well (under both Linux and Windows 7).

That leads me to the good things. Ubuntu 9.10 installed on this machine with no problems. The volume keys and hardware graphics acceleration work fine, and multiple monitors (using the internal LCD and an external display) work out of the box. The button to disable the trackpad and the wireless disable button both work under Ubuntu (as do the corresponding LEDs). The indicator LEDs for things like caps lock, num lock, the trackpad, and the wireless all blend into the laptop nicely. Wired and wireless (B and G, at least) both work properly. NTFS resizing also worked fine. The machine is fairly fast with both operating systems, though the 5400 RPM drive does hamper application start-up time. Graphics performance is very good for business applications; I don't play games on a general purpose computer, though, so my standards may be lower than people who would spend more on a video card than I did on this whole laptop. I like the track pad pretty well, and the laptop feels reasonably sturdy. I haven't tried the built-in HDMI output or media card readers under either OS yet. I'm assuming they'll both work; I'll post a follow-up if one fails. For the record, I would be willing to trade HDMI for Bluetooth as well. :)

The only other thing of note is the keyboard layout. There is an "end" key shared with the number 1 on the number pad, and another end above the number pad (sharing the scroll lock / sys req button). I'm fond of the "shift+end" (and shift+home) keyboard shortcuts to select everything from the cursor to the end (or beginning) of the line. However, pressing "shift" and the closer "end" key actually makes the keyboard type a 1. That's minor, but it does annoy me.

Speaking of minor annoyances no Windows install media is shipped (I'll bet a CD costs less than the paper notepad and microfiber cloth HP chose to bundle). You can create a set of install disks if you want using an included tool, though (only single-sided supported by the tool, even though there's a dual-layer burner here); make sure you do that before you wipe Windows off of the machine to install Linux. :) If nothing else, it's easier to sell your license if you have media to go with it. ;)

Overall, if I could get another one of these at the same price I bought this one for (a Black Friday deal, with a couple of other discounts including the current rebate deal) I would not hesitate to do so. Yeah, I spent most of this review griping about little things, but the main good things are already patently obvious. The CPU and memory included are very good, the drive capacity is good (despite being slower than a 7200 RPM drive), the screen quality is excellent, and the sound is good for a laptop. Windows 7 doesn't suck as much as Windows has in the past, and the Linux support on this device is very good.

Update: I finally got around to testing the HDMI (translation: I finally got a TV with HDMI support), and both video and audio work fine out of the box under Ubuntu 9.10; plug the cable in, start up the display preferences, and you have another monitor you can either extend or clone your desktop over to then go to the sound preferences and change the default output device from the on-board sound to the hdmi output if you want sound over HDMI. Multiple monitors work fine with the RGB cable on the back as well. However, I haven't attempted HDMI and RGB external connections simultaneously; I suspect that such an arrangement won't work as expected. :)

I purchased this Windows 7-64 bit notebook to replace a crashed desktop. It's nice enough that there's a sleek design with its black case and aluminum touchpad and trim, but there's a lot more "under the hood" of this budget-priced model. 4GB of installed DDR2 @SDRAM with 1MB of installed memory cache, a 320 GB hard drive and a 2.1 Ghz speed on its T4300 processor. The 1366 x 768 BrightView is crisp and clear with a 15.6 display size. The G60 weighs less than seven pounds yet has enough bells and whistles to perform like a desktop. In fact, I am using it as one with a purchased flat screen monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse.

Additionally, there's a webcam and a 5-in-one media reader (alas, not large enough for a compact flash card, but an external card reader solved the problem).

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition is pre-installed and took a little getting used to after my XP machines, but I think it ultimately will make home networking a much easier install as the system is quite intuitive.

This is my second HP computer and I am impressed with its performance. I especially like the software compatibility feature that allows me to run older programs in XP mode.

Gripes? Very few. The 5400 rpm drive speed seems a little slow after a 7200 desktop speed and I would not recommend it for serious games, however, for the beginner to average user, it's a good solid machine.

Not sure if its a great product. I got it for my wife, she is fine with it. I feel its a bit heavy.

Twice we faced a strange problem, the computer will just not turn on. I removed the battery and then reinserted it. It started working. Not sure if its a manufacturing defect or some user fault.

Would recommend this laptop. However, when I purchased it I did not realize it came with 32bit Home Premium Windows 7 and not 64 bit. So I went and purchased 64 bit and reinstalled the OS. Works even better with 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I ran it with 32 bit for a day and for the last few days have had 64 bit windows on it. Screen is great. Can't complain except MSI should clearly state that it comes with 32bit on their packaging. Better yet they should install it with 64bit.

First off this IS IN FACT AN LED SCREEN and...

Not an LCD as this ad and the website of national reailers like Office Depot claim, in Fact if you take a brief trip to the website of MSI they too, confirm this and since buying one last night at my local Office Depot I have confirmed that the info on the MSI website is correct this is once more is an LED display !!!

With that said this unit overall is as good as any laptop I have ever owned, or used from my job. This includes 11 different laptops in the last 14 years from NEC, IBM, HP, Toshiba, Acer and Dell.

The only complaint I could find is that it comes with Windows 7 32 bit instead of 64 bit which is not that much of an issue as most applications do not support 64 bit mode at the moment anyway, however I just don't think it makes much sense to have not used 64 bit.

With all that said a quick review and my first impressions...

1. The screen is excellent, large and beautfiul, great contrast and colors

2. The keyboard is excellent, a little different for someone not used to the chicklet style made popular by Apple, but doe not take long to get used to.

3. The processor is an obvious selling point, it runs cool, consumes less power than any previous high end Intel Processor and Graphics combo !

4. Overall build quality is top notch and for the solid feel it is actually quite light !!!

5. The tochpad is TOP NOTCH and I say that as someone who does not use a mouse, tochpad functionallity is something of a pet peeve for me when buying a laptop, so if you too are someone that finds many of the tochpads out there today not worth a penny..

Rest assured this touchpad works and works well !

So as you can see for this is a great laptop with plenty of power to spare !

If you are looking for a 15.6 inch unit that is powerful and more than capable of handling Flash media at 1080P look no further, this will make and excellent unit for developers and would serve well as an all around machine for business oriented users too !

One last thing I forgot is the battery and it out of the box after its first charge I got about 2 1/2 hrs or real time use surfing the web and half the time I was watching an episode of Red Eye on Hulu which is very processor intensive...

So when this company claims 2 1/2 hrs they mean it !

Unlike most companies who will site the number windows show right after unplugging it (HP, DELL, Toshiba) Just to name a few !

If you are wondering that number shown when placing the mouse pointer over the batter icon was showing 4 hrs. 15 min on my unit after first charge !

I purchased this laptop for a mere $525 from Amazon last week. I'm thrilled with the performance of the i5 and DDR3 combined with Windows 7. My only complaints about this machine are:

1. Lack of bluetooth despite having a bluetooth LED and function key

2. Trackpad has a vertical scroll bar, but it isn't raised or visible so kind of difficult to use at times.

3. USB and power ports are in the back as opposed to the sides of the machine.

4. Power LEDs are very bright blue, almost distracting at night.

This machine has a great keyboard, tons of power, a really great screen, and it isn't too heavy. I love MSI and I'll continue buying from them in the future. I would recommend the A6200 to anyone in the ~$600 price range.

I am so glad my fiancee convinced me to spend the extra $100 dollars on this laptop (the one I wanted) over a similar Acer with a Core i3 processor. This is hands down the best laptop I have ever owned.

I am so happy with this laptop! It is by far better than the $900 Dell I bought 2 years ago. And I only paid $600. This computer really handles what you throw at it. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone.

The problem with the speakers that everyone is complaining about is summed up to the fact that they put them on the front of the computer so when its sitting on your lap it sounds muffled. While its not exceptional, it wouldn't keep me from purchasing this laptop. I'm actually able to play sims 3 on it and even my desktop won't run it well. It plays perfectly! I'm so happy with this!

Dell XPS 17 X17L-751ELS 17.3-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver)

Love this laptop! It's great looking, feels sturdy, and it runs very quiet. The display is beautiful colors are bright and true to life. I even like the touchpad, which is a first for me. For me, it's just responsive enough without being too sensitive. I have not noticed any issues with it getting hot, but I have only had it for 3 days now.

The backlit keyboard feels great very easy to type on, and it's very helpful when working in a not so brightly lit room. The 2nd generation Core i7 processor is really fast. All my programs and applications are ready to use within a minute or so after I turn on the computer.

I had one minor issue after I finished with all the Windows updates (there were about 50 of them). Every time I shut down the computer, it would restart instead of shutting down. It was getting frustrating, so I did some research online. Some suggested that it was a "hardware issue", but one person suggested that it could be that the BIOS needed to be updated. I went to the Dell website, and there was a BIOS update there, along with several driver updates. I downloaded all the updates, and the restarting problem was gone. It's been smooth sailing ever since.

Aanother plus for me, I originally ordered this model (but without the blueray player) from BB because I liked their financing of 18 months with no interest. I ordered online, because it is not an item they carry in the store. Anyway, the item stayed in process for several days after the estimated arrival date with no progress. As I got more and more impatient, I decided to see if Amazon carried that model, or a similar one. Bottom line is, Amazon offers 24-month financing (even better!). Even though the Amazon price was about $100.00 more than the other store, I only wound up paying $20.00 more for an upgraded model, even though I used 1-day shipping, because Amazon does not charge the sales tax sweet!!

This computer is big, gorgeous, fast, doesn't get hot and the fan isn't noisy. The lighted keyboard is wonderful! I haven't bought a computer in a few years and I didn't even realize that was available.

I needed something for making movies, and the Intel i7 handles it just fine.

One day, I turned it on, and just black screen appears.

All I can see is the cursor sign. I can only run it in safe mode, and I haven't even used it that long.

I'm appalled by how short it lasted..

if you're purchasing this laptop because you think it has 3-D will find yourself disappointed. I purchased this laptop after reading that this laptop had 3-D capabilities. I looked it up online and also saw reviews from other people saying 3-D works great. The person who said that as I now know was not telling the truth. While this laptop may have good features there are better laptops with better features for the same price. The catch of this laptop to me was supposed to be 3D abilities. In the description it stated that it has 3-D capabilities. Upon receiving it I saw a button program that said enable 3-D in the control panel that says 3-D management or setting. I thought great maybe I'm misunderstanding some things that it might've been a bit more difficult for me to set up 3D and I'm not understand what's going on. By the way I purchased the nvidia 3-D wireless glasses the thought maybe just maybe I didn't know what I was doing. My brother suggested that since the laptop that I bought from Amazon that it might still have the Dell warrantee and therefore I called Dell to set up my 3-D. I did so I waited a day and called Dell to help me set up my 3-D.

To My Shock!!! Dell representatives personally told me this computer does not have 3-D. I of course immediately called Amazon. Long story short the word capabilities is deceptive. This laptop can have 3-D if it had the right processor and the right screen which it does not. It may be possible to connect it to a 3-D TV and have 3-D but that's not what I bought it for. The nice people at Amazon quickly understood my problem and immediately issued me a refund following the return of the item. Do not purchase this laptop if you want it to have 3-D already on screen. If you had any doubt to what I'm saying simply called Dell give them the model of this computer and hear it straight from them this computer does not come up equip with the ability to support 3-D as it is now.

I had the criteria of 17" screen, high speed, and graphics abilities to develop Windows 8 Phone Apps and Windows 8 Metro Apps. This computer had it all, including 8 GB RAM and more than adequate HD space at 673 GB. All my former Windows 7 applications now run on the Windows 8 upgrade that I installed two days after my purchase of this computer. More than satisfactory!

Rec'd the laptop in excellent condition. the strange thing was the carton had the SKU blacked out, and there was a Sam's Club label visable. also visable was a Do Not Scan label, SKU intact. H/p verified that the computer had not been started before, and registered the warranty. I have used the laptop for less than five hours so far (01/03/2013) and all is good. I like the computers' features.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5244 15.6" LED 4GB/640HD Laptop with Intel Processor

I bought two of these for Xmas presents for my grandchildren. I powered them up and personalized them. One thing I noticed right away is that when you plug in a mouse, the smart pad is automatically disabled. I love that! My own Asis laptop does not, so when you type you can accidently cause unintended commands to happen.

The screen is bright and large. It has a full numeric keypad. Bloatware is minimal. The wireless connects instantly and pulls in a strong signal. It has an attractive outer surface which makes it look like a high end unit.

On the negative side, like many new notebooks, the cover does not latch when closed, but the hinge is very tight and it stays closed.

Battery life and reliability will need to wait to be tested till after the holidays.

Update: A person asked about the speakers. They are typical of laptop speakers in that they are not very good for music or movies but acceptable for speech. But is there a laptop of this size that is good for music or movies?

whatever you do keep your virus software updated!! i didnt now my laptop has become victim to death..replacing the parts and software is going to cost more than the laptop is worth. other than that i love it! i miss it! im saving up for a new laptop

Bought this Toshiba 15.6 inch laptop last week for business travel. I am just loving it. Great quality and style. All my family members have Toshiba laptops. My wife has the 17 inch version that we bought last year from Amazon. We still use the 5 year old Toshiba 14 inch with Windows XP laptop in our guest room. Over the years I have had a variety of different brands. We stay with Toshiba because the internal components just last. Never a problem.

Dell Inspiron i15R-1579sLV 15-Inch Laptop

First of all, let me state that I consider myself to be an above average PC user. I cut my teeth on mainframes and mini-computers, and bought my first PC back in the late 1970s. I have performed hardware and software support for a medium-sized company for a number of years. I am no longer actively supporting others' PCs, but am still involved in business and personal use of PCs normally providing my own basic hardware and software support.

I received my new Dell laptop about a month and a half ago. It has not been working for the past three weeks. When I turn the laptop on, the Dell logo displays, and the screen goes blank. Per Dell, I needed to contact them to work out any warranty issues. I had been on the phone with Dell, for two weeks off and on going over the same issues again and again with them. They assure me that they want to get the laptop fixed! They then sent me a boot disk (flash drive). The laptop will not recognize the flash drive. After several more days of discussion, they told me they would replace the disk drive, the motherboard, and the DVD player. This was 5 days ago. I finally got a call from the Dell authorized warranty repairman two days ago, but missed the call. I called back immediately, but he was out (I assume on another warranty repair job). After two more days with no returned calls, I called him again. He assured me I would be the first one on his list tomorrow!

I have nothing against the repairman, but I asked Dell if the parts could be sent to my local Dell authorized warranty repairman located two miles from me. Instead, they sent the parts to someone located 4 hours away!!!! Is this any way for Dell to keep warranty costs down???

I have been a fan of Dell pcs for a number of years, but I believe this will be my last dell purchase. The products seem to be great and normally reliable for a reasonable price, but if there are any warranty issues on new products where Dell needs to get involved, forget it.

Received the product Friday. Turns out a speaker is defective. Called Dell today only to be switched from one customer service guy to the next and after being on hold for a total of 1 1/2 hours they hung up on me. The last person who put me on hold said that he doesn't know what to do if a product is defective and he was going to put me on hold and find out. Phone got disconnected during my hold time and nobody bothered to call back. As if my defective computer would be magically fixed because I was passed around from one rep to the next. Tried getting back in touch with them only to get the voice response system that kept saying "sorry, I didn't understand that" and after me telling it over and over again that I want customer service I finally got a live person on the phone. That person also passed me off to another department and that voice mail said that they are only open M-F, as if the person who transferred me who works at Dell didn't know that! Then I call again and get another person who tells me the same thing and I ask to speak to manager. Some guy comes on the phone and says "sorry for the inconvenience" and that I have to call back Monday. Nobody cared that I was on the phone with them for over 2 hours at this point only to find out that I have to wait until Monday. I don't know what will happen on Monday but at this point I want to return this defective laptop and get my money back just so I never have to deal with such incompetent people again.

The screen started to have vertical fuzzy lines and after a week, the screen showed a blank. It would work after shaking the laptop. However, the vertical lines would appear again after 10 minutes. I learned that the lcd crystal broke down. Eventually, the screen didn't show anything. Completely caput.

After calling the help desk (reaching them took me over 30 minutes), I learned that the warranty had expired a few months ago and to replace the screen, it would cost half of the amount I paid for initially to purchase this laptop.

I will never buy from DELL again. They sell cheap products that breaks down just after the warranty expires.

I've had this for about a month, got it direct from Dell but with same specs and similar price as it's offered here. In this review I'll try to differentiate between comments on the computer itself and issues caused by Windows 8, but since I can't really review a computer without discussing the operating system, win8 inevitably affects the overall rating. A note about the 3 stars: I would probably give windows8 two stars by itself, and this computer running windows7 might have gotten 4 or even 5 stars for the reasons I'll explain below.

The pros: this is a solid everyday computer. Reboots and load times are quick, wireless connection is stable. I've run MS office suite, Matlab, and ArcGIS a fair amount, all with no hitches. Clearly not intended as a gaming PC but it handles Warcraft just fine with the addition of a wireless mouse and the screen looks good for both games and movies from various angles. It's not as cute/sexy as the Dell z-series (or certainly a Mac) but I think it looks pretty good with nice lines and some modern metallic touches and at 6 pounds it's no problem to carry anywhere.

The cons: A fair number mysterious reboots and updates both from Microsoft and Dell despite setting so that it is only supposed to do this at 3am. This is certainly not as bad as the horror of Vista and it seems a bit better recently but was pretty frustrating for the first few weeks. Two, windows 8 is just clearly not really intended to be run on this machine. It's probably best used with a touchscreen and probably least optimal with a touchpad mouse, and the main interface for this machine is...a touchpad mouse. You can read about reasons for this all over the web but basically they want you to use the OS more like a tablet or phone, flipping between different apps and screens. In my experience you really can't use this computer with the touch clicking/gesturing activated without opening new screens every time you move the mouse, so you'll need to switch it off. Easily done but if I have to lose functionality before I can use my computer, you lose a star. Third, this is probably my least favorite keyboard of computers I've used lately. Feels a bit mushy and awkward this is very much personal preference, but if you're picky maybe check it out before you buy.

Overall: quite a capable computer, but really not designed for the OS installed on it. I knew going in that win8 would be a pain and decided to put up with it because I think this is where Operating Systems are headed and I'll have to leave the Desktop someday, but this would be a system running win7.
