ASUS K55A 15.6" Core i5 500GB HDD Laptop

ASUS K55A 15.6' Core i5 500GB HDD LaptopI exchanged my Lenovo z585 for this awesome laptop! I didn't get it from Amazon but the store I bought it from doesn't give you the option to leave a review. My Lenovo was an AMD A10 with much more ram but this Asus is so much faster! I even downloaded MapleStory just to see how long it would take to download, install, load and play and it actually downloaded pretty quick. Of course installing takes quite awhile but still faster than Lenovo. When I tried to install on the Lenovo, it kept failing midway. Loading took a couple of minutes, where the Lenovo took over 20 minutes. Also, the game plays much better on the Asus. The Lenovo was constantly lagging! The A10 is supposed to be the equivalent of I7 but it runs worse than I3. So if you're going to get a laptop, get this one! Asus is known for a really good and reliable motherboard. The failure statistics are much lower than almost every other company. Lenovo is right there with HP and Dell. I haven't had mine long but have used it constantly since I got it and I have not had any issues with it. Also, ASUS gives you 1 year accidental warranty.

I'm using this for personal, school and business use so this definitely fits the bill and was on sale at my local Fry's.

Just remember, don't go for AMD! Intel is definitely the way to go!

Thinkpad T420S 14" 128GB Ssd

Thinkpad T420S 14' 128GB SsdHave had very bad experience with this product and I want to share it so you don't make the same mistake. Lenovo customer service did not deliver on this purchase.

I Bought this top of line laptop in early December with 8 GB of memory and all the bells and whistles including SSD hard drive. the System arrived right before the holiday and I was heading out of town so my first chance to use it was not until early January. After setting this machine up I was very impressed with the speed and features. The machine was great. Then it failed 7 days later. It would not start up. The machine was in a docking station the whole time. After calling Lenovo and running through troubleshooting steps with them, they determined it needed to be send back.

I asked them if they can just send a new one but they said no sorry we can only do that within 21 days and you have had the system 24 days (customer service failure #1). They said they would overnight a box and I would get the system back in 6 days (overnight after repair). The box took 2 days to get to my place (not a big deal). I then sent it back hoping to have the system repaired in a week. I understand that sometimes things happen and I was not holding against the product. Every Thinkpad I had ever owned was solid.

Now from here the customer service spirals out of control. The system went back to Lenovo on Jan 11th. I inquired with them around the 15th to see where we were with the repair and they sent me to a web site where I was able to see it was holding for parts. I asked them what this means and how long it might be. They said they have no idea how long it takes and they have no way to get an estimate of delivery on parts. IBM handles the repair process and when I called Lenovo they referred me back to IBM. When I complained to IBM they said we will escalate to Lenovo since they have the part that IBM needs to install. I have been on the phone with various people from IBM and Lenovo and no one has been able to help me or even taken an initiative to get a resolution. It just gets passed on. The latest update on the web is that the system is still waiting for parts. IBM escalated this to Lenovo and said I would be contacted within 48 hours. I was not contacted.

This has been a nightmare. I paid a lot of money for a laptop in early December and here it is February 5th and I have no system, no communication, and 100% lost faith in Lenovo as a company. I am now going through the process of filing a complaint with American Express and have already submitted a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. In searching the web I cam across this site which highlights how bad Lenovo's issues are. There are new complaints against the company every day.Lenovo has no excuse for not following up with their customers on issues especially when they have been escalated and when promised a follow-up within 48 hours.

I loved Thinkpads up until now and I think some of my initial fears (when Lenovo bought IBM) are coming to fruition. The quality has gone down and the customer service does not exist. This is the first brand new laptop I have ever had fail within a year of purchase (and this one failed after only 7 days) and I buy a fair number of these as I am an IT tech and buy these for customers.

Buyer Beware.

This computer didn't have a review when I bought it last September, and it deserves better than one star. It's a great machine for the money, the SSD is blazing fast and the machine is solid. I have had no issues with it, and am buying a new one to replace it as mine was stolen.

Acer Aspire AS7741-5731 17.3" 3GB 250GB Laptop Black

Acer Aspire AS7741-5731 17.3' 3GB 250GB Laptop BlackThis is my first personal laptop and so far it has been a great purchase. I am a gamer that also does a lot of professional audio/video recording and editing and this laptop has been able to handle everything so far without any big problems. I am still looking for a usb interface for my audio inputs and outputs (Im used to a pci card interface for my board), but thats a whole nother beast. I am able to get 48-60 fps when playing 3d games and the wireless adapter has very little latency (around 200ms, which is ok in my experience compared to other wireless setups I have used). The range of the adapter is impressive, I can get a signal much further than my wife's toshiba. Battery life is a little over 3 hours in my experience when using the web and much less when playing games. Screen size is excellent and is true 16:9 aspect ratio, which suits my hd editing perfectly. picture quality is also very good. I have watched many dvd's while staying in hotels on this unit. In my 2+ months of owning it I have had only one problem that seems to have gone away. Initially, the video driver was hanging up, causing my screen to blank out for a few seconds during 3d gameplay, but windows was able to recover quickly every time and resume play without losing anything. This has not happened in the past few weeks. Windows reported it as a driver failure and I think the driver has been updated to fix the problem. I paid a little less than the stated price of $498 at walmart for this computer and could not be happier. Goodbye desktop! My mother was impressed with the machine and bought one soon after I did with the same results, very satisfied. One word of advice in closing, make sure the unit has enough space for proper airflow during 3d acceleration, it gets warm when 3d is used due to the video being on chip.

Picked this up at Walmart for $398 the price tag on it was $498 it must have been a roll back or something. I really didn't need a computer at all however for $398 I just couldn't turn it down. I prefer macs but I have picked up a couple HP's for the same price as this with 4gb of ram,but a 15.6'' screen at a black friday sale.I mean with kids and school work and that rare occasion were you need a PC I refuse to pay over $500 bucks for a PC. No Way!!! I've burned through to many PC's to justify spending more.were as I still have the same mac running strong not one problem also fast and reliable.I also don't want to put windows on my mac forget that noise.

If your looking for speed then don't buy this PC.I use it for Internet, pictures, word processing, and ripping music.Lets face it. This is not a work horse by any means however it works fine for my family's needs. The screen is a nice backlit LED, very bright and sharp. Very nice looking and the keys are flat which I like alot. Most impotantly it is pretty damn lightweight and slim for the size of it. The Cd/DvD drive opens better than any laptop I've owned and is also pretty responsive . The outer top finish is almost like a rubber/plastic and not a fingerprint magnet like my HP's are. I am constantly cleaning finger prints off those HP shiny black glossy outer back shell. The last thing I'd like to add is it is very sharp looking with a nice trackpad. Great buy!!! Walmart must have just recently marked these down so good luck. I have a feeling they will go fast!

Ive used Acers for many years since i got my first gigantic tower back in 1997 with a tower and printer for over 2200$!! Big money back then. That computer was put through the fire, moving several times, and actually after getting a laptop i put it out in a room to set, and the side was exposed(open). Cat hair, dampness, dust, static, you name it, it got inside it. I brought it back in after about 4 months and said hey why not try it, boom it started right up after a little spray down, and i was shocked, over 7 years of use. Finally the power supply went bad, due to a bad recepticle i think. So i gutted it, through in some new stuff, sold it on ebay for 550$ in 2004 for another tower. The one after lasted till 2009, and i still know who has it, and uses it all the time. So that should tell you how reliable these things are. Now you will hear stories of how the Laptops run into more problems, depending on which one you get. But there are so many 1000's of these things made all the time your gonna run into issues, not matter WHAT kind you get. Also these aren't desktops which are made for more punishment.

This version i am using now, is the same but just with the P6100 Pentium dual-core, 4 gigs of RAM, and a 500gig hard drive which i got at staples for 499$, yes thats not a typo either. The price has went back up by now i'm sure. This thing is just stellar, i already own my 3rd Acer Desktop which i made into a killer gaming rig so i stick with what i know, and what lasts. The screen on this thing is absolutely amazing, no really it has to be THE brightest screen i've ever came across on any laptop. And i've tried many. Also on that note you get 1600x900 resolution on this baby for that price as well, beat that? I dare you to even try. The speakers are very loud and clear, with dolby surround which usually isn't so great, but in this case very good. Its not a speed demon like the I series, but as i said i already have a gaming rig for all the rest i need to do. Its no slouch though, most movies ranging from 700mb to 1.00gb average around 34 to 45 minutes for coversion which isn't bad at all. Using a program like DIVX to DVD runs like a charm and you have DVD ready VSO movies in no time.

The keys are very close to the body of the computer and very touch sensitive, which i like a lot, but it can make you more prone to mistakes if you type as fast as i do. Also the computer comes with 3mb of L3 cache, which also helps give it a boost in processing speed. So for the price your getting much more than you will with much more expensive brands. Especially for a 17.3 in screen. The web cam is great, none are out of this world, but it does what it does, and does it well. The laptop is very thin, even though its large and only weighs around 7.5lbs. So its very easy to tout around with you. The mouse pad is the only thing that can be a little figity at times, but just use it with extra caution, especially when typing. It doesnt run hot in the least, highest temperature i've seen on it using speed fan is around 45C. Even under heavy work load. Wireless is great and pics up a great signal no matter where you are with the new Acer Nplify boost.

There is a walmart version of this computer and its ok if you don't want a lot of space and a little decrease in performance, only 3 gigs which isn't bad, and only a 250gig HD which is not so good. So check out Staples and see if they still sell these at this price, it may not last long. The scores for Windows are as follows btw. Also this version review on here with the 3 gigs, and the older 1.86ghz, i would steer clear off unless you just wanna browse, if so its fine, plus the screen doesnt look nearly as good. I have a friend with one. So here are the Windows specs.

Calculations per second....5.7

Memory Operations per second.....5.9

Desktop for Windows Aero....4.6

3D gaming and Graphics....5.1(not bad for intel HD graphics), usually its down in the 3's

Data transfer rate-5.8

So for what it is you can't beat it, i've seen Sony Vaios that don't even rate that high for 699 or more. So get one of these(the staples or walmart brand that is) with the P6100, you'll be glad for the extra performance. I know i am, love it.

The screen is big and bright and is a nice looking unit. Basically I like just about everything about this thing except it is damn slow most the time. Everything is updated, virus free but it has been slow right out of the box with all the updates. I wouldnt buy another one.

Had this laptop for two weeks, bought it from walmart. After the two weeks the only program I put on it was bitdefender antivirus and system mechanic, shortly after it crashed. Rebooted everything and removed all the non oem clutter, which is mostly useless stuff anyway. The ram seemed to cut in half by itself and the hard drive cut its speed in half. Needless to say I got rid of windows because aero is too over bearing on this thing, and installed ubuntu 11.4, still having the lag from the hdd but the ram is back to normal. I would not recommend this to anyone, do not buy! I went to acer's website and you have to see if your eligible for free tech advice, otherwise you have to pay the site for the questions because their product absolutely blows. DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!

Acer Aspire One AO756-2641 11.6-Inch Laptop (Ash Black)

Acer Aspire One AO756-2641 11.6-Inch LaptopI purchase this after getting a used acer 10.1" netbook and found the keyboard to small to do any real typing on it. This netbook has a fantastic 11.6" display that gives sharp video playback. The keyboard is good size and allows for easy typing. The weight and size make it very easy to carry around. On the negative side I wish the battery held a better charge and the touchpad can be a little over sensitive. I ended up getting a wireless mouse which solve my problem with the touchpad which I think is more me than the netbook. I have my netbook set up to dual boot into Windows 8 & Linux Mint 13. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

I wouldn't call it the most sophisticated tech I ever bought, but after downloading Microsoft Office Home and Student (purchased separately), it's an affordable option that meets my needs. I think that's the key to any technology purchase--know your needs. Mine are emailing, writing, research, surfing, shopping, socializing, and other pretty low-level uses. If these are your needs as well, this is the machine for you.

This compact computer is efficient for simple needs such as surfing, letters, blogging and a few hidden games/solitaire. I love the color (Red) and how lightweight it is. I loaded StarOffice (thanks amazon) as not to purchase another expensive license. Star office is compatible with all office programs and it works similar to office XP (good enough for me). I digress, battery life is efficient for me and my needs. I purchased my system through Wal-Mart during a sale for $198.00 which is what I think this system is worth. Not good for high powered games or extensive wear and tear. Further, I hate Windows 8 who tested that thing. Its awful and after experiencing it on this computer, I'm definitely not upgrading even if they gave it to me for free. In addition, I agree with the mouse pad being sensitive and did exactly what another rater did, purchased a mouse and disabled it. It's a little slow to start and shut down hopefully, upgrading memory will help that.

All in all, I like my system. I took a star for Windows 8 hated it...

I like this laptop. The new windows 8 is really difficult to navigate but acer gives you the option of the acer desktop which is what non-windows 8 users are used to. it is light, quick and compact and is perfect for blogging and drafting documents. A good buy and worth the money.

I am giving this little guy 5 stars because it has been performing for me in every way I need it to. I was in search of an inexpensive, small laptop to do some light web surfing/research and word processing. In the week that I've had it, I am very pleased!

The first thing I did after booting up the netbook (to make sure everything loaded up okay), was install more RAM ordered from the Crucial website, because they guarantee the correct size for your machine. This netbook only comes with 2 GB of RAM, which I was afraid wouldn't quite be enough to handle my multi-tasking. There is one 2 GB stick in one slot, and there is another slot that is empty. I upgraded to the max amount of 8 GB with two 4 GB sticks. The bottom plate was relatively easy to remove and the slots are there in the center, plain as day. I believe this will allow the netbook to run at its best.

The processor is weak, so boot up, shut down, and opening programs is going to take slightly longer than you're used to if you've been working on a newer desktop with a big, shiny processor. I don't need a super fast processor to play Diablo on this thing, so I can wait an extra second for load time. It doesn't bother me, because I expected it.

I am very pleased with the size of the screen and the keyboard it feels almost like 100% of a regular keyboard. (I think maybe it's 92%? Not sure.) Sound quality and video playback from YouTube videos have been satisfactory. Not mind blowing, but no glitches either. Some reviewers have commented on the poor sound quality, but I don't have an issue with it.

On the negative, there are 3 issues:

1. The top of the machine has a shiny, glossy surface which is pretty, but attracts my grubby fingerprints like the dickens. But that's merely aesthetic, and the box comes with a cleaning cloth.

2. I have been having recurring issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks. I usually need to run the troubleshooting app to fix it, and then all is well. This, of course, may be due to my own lack of knowledge regarding IP's and network configurations, etc.

3. Personally, I have found that the battery will last me only about 3.5 hours on average. This is a bit shorter than I'd like, but still functional.

Overall, I think this netbook is a perfect fit for anyone with needs similar to mine word processing, web surfing, and an inexpensive machine that travels well. I highly recommend it.

HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15-b140us 15.6-Inch Laptop

HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15-b140us 15.6-Inch LaptopI was really expecting a budget no frills computer for the price I paid (four hundred). I've seen the price go up, and to me is just too much at that price, and that's the reason there aren't any reviews. This computer works super fast, and is super responsive with the latest operating system. It looks like a five hundred to six hundred dollar laptop, but at six bills you can pick a laptop up which is either a convertible, has a touch screen, has the upgraded Beats soundcard, and the best feature of all, a backlit keypad.

This basic no frills laptop doesn't have any of that, and it has last years i3 CPU (graphics are more suitable for surfing the web). I've heard people complain about the keypads on this model, and that was my biggest concern. I was happy to find that the keypads weren't bad, and the letter spacing is fine.

I've also read a lot about people getting accustomed to Windows 8. Windows 8 is totally different from any other operating system. Win95,98,2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 are all the same. Windows 8 is completely different, and believe me you'll need to buy Windows 8 For Dummies. I did.

If the price is right (four hundred is what I paid), I'd recommend purchasing this, but if the price is comparable to a CPU with an i5, or an Ultrabook, I'd recommend going with the laptop with more features. This laptops best feature is its slimness, portability and its looks. Happy shopping!

Update 4/19/2013: From reading articles online, I'd conclude that it would be wise to hold off on purchasing a laptop for the next 6 months, if possible. There will be a dramatic price drop on touch laptops in the next 2 quarters, and the touch market laptops will be designed with the Bay Trail Atom chip . Windows 8 was designed for touch. The laptop I am reviewing just got caught between the transition phase.

It's light. It stays cool! I love this guy. This 15 inch has an newest i3 processor. Plenty of Ram and a large hard-drive to store things. Windows 8 takes some getting used to but the start-up and shutdown times will stun you on this new operating system.

Pros:

light and thin

more than enough power for everyday usage

nothing extra special but good looking (fingerprints are not a issue here)

remains fresh without the need of a stand or fans

usb 3.0 (if you haven't try one before, you don't know what you are missing, it's so much faster than usb 2)

cons:

pain to get used to win 8 (well, it's getting much better now)

HP does it finally. it is a good laptop with a great price. for 15.6 inches i3 core. it is a good bargain laptop in sub $500 range. Windows 8 is a pain to use. but it is just the matter of getting used to it. No big deal. We learn thing all the time anyway. Why not 1 more and beside, as long as click on Desktop, everything look the same again. But I hoped that I would able to shutdown and restart as before instead now Alt-F4.....

that's weird.

anyway, HP itself is good, light weight, very thin for me. With a HDMI output that's a little surprise for me. I guess I need to buy a DVI and HDMI cable for my monitor. So far, it is a good laptop and I am a mobile app developer and it has a good screen for me to do my work.

I love it. It is very fast and getting used to using the windows 8. It is a notebook style though it says laptop because it has no cd,dvd, or bluray drive (which for the price is fine you can always look online and get an external for a good price). VERY LIGHT! Love how light and easy to carry. It is thin and the screen size it perfect not too big but not too small. I would highly recommend it. I have had for 2 months so far so awesome will update later.

MSI A6200-021US Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-430M 2.26 GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 320GB HD

MSI A6200-021US Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-430M 2.26 GHz / 15.6' LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 320GB HD / 802.11b/g/draft n WLAN / DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home PremiumWould recommend this laptop. However, when I purchased it I did not realize it came with 32bit Home Premium Windows 7 and not 64 bit. So I went and purchased 64 bit and reinstalled the OS. Works even better with 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I ran it with 32 bit for a day and for the last few days have had 64 bit windows on it. Screen is great. Can't complain except MSI should clearly state that it comes with 32bit on their packaging. Better yet they should install it with 64bit.

First off this IS IN FACT AN LED SCREEN and...

Not an LCD as this ad and the website of national reailers like Office Depot claim, in Fact if you take a brief trip to the website of MSI they too, confirm this and since buying one last night at my local Office Depot I have confirmed that the info on the MSI website is correct this is once more is an LED display !!!

With that said this unit overall is as good as any laptop I have ever owned, or used from my job. This includes 11 different laptops in the last 14 years from NEC, IBM, HP, Toshiba, Acer and Dell.

The only complaint I could find is that it comes with Windows 7 32 bit instead of 64 bit which is not that much of an issue as most applications do not support 64 bit mode at the moment anyway, however I just don't think it makes much sense to have not used 64 bit.

With all that said a quick review and my first impressions...

1. The screen is excellent, large and beautfiul, great contrast and colors

2. The keyboard is excellent, a little different for someone not used to the chicklet style made popular by Apple, but doe not take long to get used to.

3. The processor is an obvious selling point, it runs cool, consumes less power than any previous high end Intel Processor and Graphics combo !

4. Overall build quality is top notch and for the solid feel it is actually quite light !!!

5. The tochpad is TOP NOTCH and I say that as someone who does not use a mouse, tochpad functionallity is something of a pet peeve for me when buying a laptop, so if you too are someone that finds many of the tochpads out there today not worth a penny..

Rest assured this touchpad works and works well !

Windows Experience Index scoring was as follows

Processor 6.4

Memory 7.2

Graphics 4.6

Gaming Graphics 5.1

Hard Drive 5.3

So as you can see for this is a great laptop with plenty of power to spare !

If you are looking for a 15.6 inch unit that is powerful and more than capable of handling Flash media at 1080P look no further, this will make and excellent unit for developers and would serve well as an all around machine for business oriented users too !

One last thing I forgot is the battery and it out of the box after its first charge I got about 2 1/2 hrs or real time use surfing the web and half the time I was watching an episode of Red Eye on Hulu which is very processor intensive...

So when this company claims 2 1/2 hrs they mean it !

Unlike most companies who will site the number windows show right after unplugging it (HP, DELL, Toshiba) Just to name a few !

If you are wondering that number shown when placing the mouse pointer over the batter icon was showing 4 hrs. 15 min on my unit after first charge !

Hope that helps and I will say agian I could not be happier, you will not regret buying this laptop !

I purchased this laptop for a mere $525 from Amazon last week. I'm thrilled with the performance of the i5 and DDR3 combined with Windows 7. My only complaints about this machine are:

1. Lack of bluetooth despite having a bluetooth LED and function key

2. Trackpad has a vertical scroll bar, but it isn't raised or visible so kind of difficult to use at times.

3. USB and power ports are in the back as opposed to the sides of the machine.

4. Power LEDs are very bright blue, almost distracting at night.

This machine has a great keyboard, tons of power, a really great screen, and it isn't too heavy. I love MSI and I'll continue buying from them in the future. I would recommend the A6200 to anyone in the ~$600 price range.

I am so glad my fiancee convinced me to spend the extra $100 dollars on this laptop (the one I wanted) over a similar Acer with a Core i3 processor. This is hands down the best laptop I have ever owned.

The good:

LED display

Solid build

light weight (5.5 lbs)

full keyboard

HDMI port

bluetooth

EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

Great price $599

The bad:

not very much information online

weak speaker set

no firewire port

I will be recommending this notebook to my family, so obviously i would recommend it to you.

I am so happy with this laptop! It is by far better than the $900 Dell I bought 2 years ago. And I only paid $600. This computer really handles what you throw at it. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone.

The problem with the speakers that everyone is complaining about is summed up to the fact that they put them on the front of the computer so when its sitting on your lap it sounds muffled. While its not exceptional, it wouldn't keep me from purchasing this laptop. I'm actually able to play sims 3 on it and even my desktop won't run it well. It plays perfectly! I'm so happy with this!

Acer Aspire S3-391-6676 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne)

Acer Aspire S3-391-6676 13.3-Inch UltrabookI agree with the other positive reviews about the size and looks. I had been searching for months for the perfect laptop for me [lots of surfing and several windows open, but no gaming] at the perfect price. I read lots of reviews in my search. Kim Komando, [from whom I get most of my computer info] listed several must have options. One was Core i5 over Core i3, because i3 is old technology. Just before I bought this one, in my Amazon search, I specified i5. This recommendation popped up and I assumed it was I5 and bought it because all of the other specs were just right, without realizing that it was not what I intended. In fact, it was only after several days of use that I realized my error. My ram meter indicated that I am normally using 60-70%. I decided to improve that by adding another 4 gigs of memory. I discovered that the memory is soldered in instead of plugged in therefore I could not do it myself.

My first laptop was an Acer, and after getting a hard drive replaced due to early failure, it worked well for 3 years, but the battery got to where it wouldn't hold a charge. I decided Acer deserved my business again.

Pros:

1. Perfect size and weight.

2. Looks great.

3. Fast and mostly intuitive in its operation [after adding a Windows 7 shell to the Windows 8 OS, because it was easier for me to use good choice].

Cons:

1. Locks up frequently and requires a hard shut down. Sometimes I get the message during reload that I had a Service_Exception_Error, and they will shut the computer down for me and restart it. Sometimes I have to do a hard shut down again when it fails to continue loading but goes gray screen on me for an extended period.

2. Loses my Wi-Fi connection frequently each day, so that I have to disconnect then reconnect, which always fixes it. I upgraded my router thinking it could be the problem, but the new, fast, super-duper one does the same thing. The Fire does not have that problem.

3. I want more memory but can't add it myself.

4. It would be nice to have a backlit keyboard.

I'm writing all these issues down in the hopes that someone can suggest fixes for me. I had a couple of issues about my Kindle Fire HD, which I mentioned in my review, and got a couple of really good responses which fixed my issues totally. Thanks guys...

I got this because I really wanted a 13" ultrabook. There were problems with wi-fi even when I was in the same room as the router my internet kept getting disconnected. The speakers are not very good the sound quality is very tinny. I do not recommend this at all. I decided to invest in a mac-book pro rather than having to replace a windows laptop every couple of years

I purchased this laptop as a Xmas gift for my girl, and hand carried it to Taipei (Taiwan) during Xmas where she is currently studying. The laptop was found to be unstable soon after power it up (wireless on and off, and system lock up frequently). I took it back to Acer service station in Taipei and they reloaded Window 8 for me. The problem stopped for a few weeks then came back.

I have no quick way to bring it back to US for return and I don't have the original packing box with me here. I will not recommand this model to anyone.

For the money, this laptop performs well, is a great size, and seems to be very reliable (Given I have only owned it for a month). It was a present for my fiance, and given she is pretty picky and usually prefers a larger form factor, I was concerned that she may be disappointed by a smaller ultrabook. To my suprise (and hers) she has actually taken to the size of this book well, and after getting used to Windows 8, seems to prefer the book over her previous Lenovo Thinkpad. The battery life, she charges it once every couple days (doesnt use it continously though). All in all, I dont think for the cost I could have found a better book.

A great value for an ultra-book. Its very fast, thin, and built very well with good materials.

I was considering the S7 but i didn't think it was worth the HUGE increase in price from this one.

I paid $553.98 here and i was not able to find any other retailer that was offering anything close to this price for this model.

I would highly recommend it.

Definitely a buy!

Dell Latitude D630 14.1" Notebook (Core 2 Duo T7500 2.0GHz 2GB 60GB CDRW/DVDRW)

Dell Latitude D630 14.1' NotebookI bought this laptop a little over 2 months, and it's been a pleasure working with it. I bought it used in very good condition. I was a little scared about buying it used, but so far it hasn't giving me any trouble. I'm very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this laptop to anyone that is on a tight budget.

We bought this computer for my sons birthday. Product was exactly as described. Very happy with our new computer. However, the box it was shipped in was way too big. it was not packaged right at all. It was bumped around alot in the delivery process. It was delivered in a timely fashion and it made it here unscathed. Proper packaging should be a priority in future mailings. But other than that, this was a great buy and the rest of the service we received was awesome:)

*within one week of purchasing this product, the screen malfunctioned. We took the computer to geek squad and also a personal friend who fixes computers and we were told it would cost over 300 dollars to fix the screen. I contacted the seller several times before the 30 days was up and they NEVER got back to me. We now have a broken computer that the seller wont exchange or refund. Total waste of money. The refurbished parts were so old geek squad couldn't help fix it and told me I had to contact dell to see if they even had the parts. This computer is JUNK. I lost my money on this computer.

This works great... BUT I really wanted one that plays DVD's as well and it won't. Even after phone calls it STILL won't. They had no suggestions.

My beef is that I decided to use these people again to purchase another computer later. The computer worked really well, but had a few little niggles that needed to be fixed (how it shuts down; and once it is, the inability for it to start back up again). I could not get any response from them... they didn't answer phone calls, they never once replied to my emails no matter how much I pleaded. Finally one day I had a stroke of luck they answered the phone but by that time the screen had gone funny and I needed their help big time. They told me to pack it up and send it back (at my expense).

I'm now waiting to see how long it takes them to either send back my computer fixed, or email me with an idea of what is wrong with it... actually I'm just waiting for a response.................... I shouldn't complain I suppose, it HAS only been two weeks! And in the meantime I'm using my kids computer.

Acer 15.6" AMD N660 3.0GHz Laptop | AS5552-7819

Acer 15.6' AMD N660 3.0GHz Laptop | AS5552-7819Slim design, sleek keyboard with numeric pad, and fast processor make up this wonderful laptop. Powerful video graphics does HD with ease but it doesn't play new core games, this is NOT a gaming laptop, the graphics card is wonderful but any game past Oblivion will most likely fail. The cons are not aplenty, but are there. When maximizing the use of the processor, be aware the fan will become hot. Because of the computer's sleek design the fan is not that powerful. This is easy to get around on when you buy a good cooling pad with a fan, preferably one that arches to allow for the small under-belly fan to access air. My only other complaint is the graphics card not being able to play new games... but hey, you get what you pay for. If any one is worried about the 4 gigs of RAM, don't fret, go to crucial.com and follow the on screen instructions to determining what upgrade you want to buy (up to 8 gigs of RAM for this laptop). The website even has an excellent video demonstrating how to install the memory yourself, saving around $50. Anyway, I have 8 gigs of RAM coming today, I will update soon to tell how that goes.

All in all, get this computer if you want excellent for the price... there are what, 2 left in stock?

I've had this laptop for about 16 or 17 months now and I have yet to find a single issue. These closest I've found is when you are crunching a lot of video memory, it can get warm, but using a spacer to give the fan more room fixes that. I run hard photo editing software and autodesk. I am still at the factory 4gb of memory, but am now thinking of going to 8gb.

This is the perfect laptop for the student, the traveling businessman, or for the limited space of an apartment or bedroom. I know that I sound like I'm from Acer, but I'm not and I've bought a ton of stuff from Amazon and I don't leave many reviews, but I needed to leave one for this machine.

Buy it and you won't regret it. Oh, and use common sense.

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ455E/B 15.4" Laptop (1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Ha

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ455E/B 15.4' Laptop Silver"I purchased this computer almost a month ago when my $1200 Toshiba (of less than 2 years) crapped out on me and CompUSA's takeover company lost my records for the replaceable warranty that I paid nearly $600 for. All this happened during my final week of college.

After 2 Toshibas, I was ready to try something else. When I saw this Vaio go on sale for $850, I knew it was a steal for the specs that it offered. Not convinced that Vista was better than XP, I took the chance anyway because of the roomy 3gigs of ram and 250gb HDD. Glad I did, because this machine runs Vista and all my regular apps really, really fast. Bootup time is less than a minute. I'm a heavy music/video user, so the external controls are a must (too bad not all Vaio's have external controls like other lower end brands). The media iPod-like "wheel" controls are solid. The speakers are a downgrade compared to my Toshiba's Harmon-Kardon speakers...the sound isn't that bad, but the volume is way too low. So I use external speakers or headphones.

The screen is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on any laptop. It truly is amazing, and there's no flex at all to it. Coming from a 14.1", the 15.4" feels a little big but the relative thinness of the case makes up for that. The keyboard is nicely spaced out, however the 'backspace' and 'enter' keys seem a tad loose. Wish it had 4 USB ports instead of 3, it would've been nice to have one located on the back. The powerjack is too close to the DVD-drive. Can't say too much about the battery life since it's been plugged in most of the time.

The only thing annoyingly wrong with this laptop, and Sony Vaios in general is the bloatware and AOL software that comes bundled in. You can't even change the default homepage on IE7 because it'll revert back to Sony-AOL's homepage when you reboot. I don't want to do a clean install so I made the permanent switch to Firefox. Overall, this is a solid machine...well built, fast, silent, and aesthetically pleasing in a minimalist way. Highly recommended!"

Sony VGN-FZ455E

If you're like me, you do as much research as necessary to get the biggest bang for the buck. On initial inspection, this machine seems to deliver. I have to say I was pretty fired up about getting this machine and eager to start work working with it. But after 3 days of having the machine, I'm sending it back to Amazon. Here's the good, the bad, and the deal breaker for why I'm sending this guy back. I DO NOT recommend buying it.

Pros:

You can read all the specs about hardware and I have to say, it doesn't disappoint. It's very good for the price considering what you get. I don't know about you but the machine really does have quite a bit over overkill. How long it will take you to fill up a 250GB hard drive? My older Dell has an 80 GB drive and I still haven't filled it up after 3 years of using it. But hey, we all got different needs. I was worried about the resolution of the screen but Sony has nailed it with their LCD technology that has clearly spilled over into this machine. The display is very sharp and very clear.

The BluRay player seems to work well and again is very crisp. HDMI port was hooked up to my 720p, 37" Vizio and it didn't seem to be overly impressive. I really wanted the HDMI output on this computer but I'm not as impressed with it as I thought I would be. I couldn't get the BR to play on the flat screen (the player would lock up when I would drag the window onto the extended monitor display) but I think there was an updated driver to fix. I loaded it but haven't got to see the fix yet.

Cons:

I know this seems trivial to talk about but here it is: the power adapter plug-in is at a 90 degree bend (not a straight plug). This is fine except when turned correctly or incorrectly, the plug interferes with the DVD/BR ejection tray and prevents the tray from fully ejecting. I have to laugh because for all the hardware thinking that Sony seemed to do with the machine they botched it with the AC power plug-in because of a 90 degree bend. Funny.

The Deal Breaker:

It seemed to take forever to get all the information loaded onto this machine. And yes, Sony did put lots of trial software on but it's easily uninstalled. However, I have worked for the last 3 days trying to get all information loaded and all the bugs worked out on this little darling. But here's the kicker: this little devil WILL NOT STAY CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. It will not stay connected either by a wired or wireless connection. The ISP is confirmed to be working and I get all indications that there is a strong signal but there is some disconnect between the connected signal and Internet Employer or Firefox. These programs simply will not display information even though there is every indication that there is a connection and all hardware is working correctly. I've tried Sony tech support and other internet sources. I've tried to reconfigure the router to WPA (by the way Vista doesn't support WEP security), and I've tried connections on a non-secure network. Guess what? Nothing is dependable or stable. No amount of tweaking will correct the problem. Tech support wants me to wipe the entire system to start all over even thought all the drivers are up to speed. I'm thinking not so much. Delete all so I can just start all over to load up my information again? Great idea tech support! I'm not 100% sure but I think this a common problem with Vista (nice job MS). Big picture: It a great computer unless you need to connect to the internet. That's why it gets the shabby rating. I'm sending this guy back to Amazon and will try an Apple. I've avoided an Apple for years but I'm ready to dumb it down with the next machine and just want it to work.

Good configuration and affordable price make this laptop a very nice choice! Even with 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, video card Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT dedicated graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, its battery lasts almost two hours. When I bought four years ago was the best value among laptops for sale at the time but now I leave my review to let everyone know that this was a great laptop.

I love everything about this laptop except for the battery longevity. It barely lasted 1.5 hours and the additional large capacity battery, which they shamelessly reminded you to buy by placing a sticker on your pristine laptop, is only 1.5 times longer (that's less than 3 hours) than the original. Could be due to Vista (which has lots of issues).

HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition (dv6tqe) Laptop -2nd generation Intel Quad Core i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz) /

HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition Laptop -2nd generation Intel Quad Core i7-2670QM / 8GB DDR3 System Memory / 750GB 5400RPM Hard Drive / 15.6' diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display / Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner / HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader / 2 USB 3.0 / Beats Audio / dark umberHP Pavillion dv6t Quad Edition. After abortive attempt by HP to divest its PC business, and some past negative dealings with HP rebates, I decided to update my Toshiba i7-740QM to this HP i7-2760QM. So after research, I bought one of these to see if the 2nd Gen Intel i-series CPUs really were "better". Bought through HP for quite a bit more money in Nov. 2011. Specs were very good, but I upgraded (part of the reason it was more expensive) the 5400 rpm hard drive to a 7200 rpm. Though there was a delay at Customs in Singapore (didn't know they were made in China), and a 6-day delay at Customs in Memphis, I finally got this supposedly improved laptop. Strike "supposedly". It ran much cooler than the very good Toshi Satellite 665. Toshi has 8 Gb 1066 RAM, the HP has 8 Gb DDR3 1333 RAM. Same MS Ultimate OS. Same Office Home & Business 2010. Norton 360 v.5.0. Toshi has a good 500 Mb DDR3 nVidia 330, the HP has a (much) better 2 Gb ATI DDR5. Beats Audio is much better than the Toshi's "good" Harmon-Kardons, though I have yet to hear any laptop speakers get even close to external add-ons. Both have a 720p HD, which is quite adequate for non-gamer/non-tech graphics (HP with the good, additional Intel 3000 for routine graphics on the CPU). The Toshi has a multi-DVD, the HP a Blu-Ray ROM/multi-DVD. The Toshi has 3 USB 2.0 ports, the HP two 3.0 (with charging capability, and on my desktop, an added "card" 3.0 runs 3-1/2 to 4 times faster backups and file transfers to 3.0 external drives than the prior 2.0) and 2x2.0 (one 2.0/eSATA). The Toshi booted in (minutes:seconds) about 1:30, the HP in :45 with Norton 360, Adobe, Office, etc. Office, Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, and several other programs on the HP came up in just over 1/2 the time as in the Toshi. The Toshi's 12-cell battery would last about 2 to 2-1/2 hours. The HP's 9-cell ran for a bit over 4 hours. The Toshi's black textured plastic barely shows a fingerprint, the HP's dark umber shows them readily. Both keyboards are similar. I've worked with computers since 1983, though not a tech person, and have lots of experience as an "advanced" novice-level user. The decision to purchase this model HP has so far (2 months) been a very good one, and I was so pleased at the improvements, I'm ordering a new one, for less cost, through Amazon (even though the new models will be out in a couple of months with the new "third generation" i-series CPUs). I gave this (reviewed) one to my son (an IT professional), who likes it also, replacing a very nice Dell Studio XPS (i5 CPU). This Amazon-ordered one has only a 5400 rpm hard drive, but I don't need (in my home and travel) the faster one. Remember, your MS Performance score is determined by the least fast component, which currently (assuming you don't go to an SSD hard drive) is about 5.9 on the 7.6 scale. The 5400 will score slightly lower than the 7200, but everything else critical to use (CPU, RAM, optical drive, etc.) runs significantly faster, often making up for the slower hard drive. And where the Toshi ran hot (not burning, but definitely uncomfortable after a short while of use), the HP gets warm, but not hot. Despite the fingerprints on the dark umber showing (not a performance issue), I found the fingerprint reader to be accurate and helpful (chuckle). So no miracle here, but a definitely worthwhile upgrade for me, and I saved nearly $400 from HP's website. The Toshi was very good 2 years ago, this HP is enough better to justify this under-$1,000 purchase.

Great price for a loaded i7 laptop, and the HP dv6t has overall very good reviews from multiple sites. The 8GB of RAM allows for fast Windows loading and a lot of multitasking, as well as the ability for future expansion. Can't believe this also includes a Blu-ray drive for the price, so I can take my BR movies on the go with me and watch them while traveling. I also like that this has the upgraded USB 3.0 ports, and the sound from the Beats audio is really great. I always thought a fingerprint reader was a novelty, but it really is nice and quick to sign on versus having to type a password each time.

Overall very pleased with this laptop and it's price. I couldn't find any other similar laptop for under 1k!

I purchased this laptop for my sister for school. She is an architecture student and we couldn't afford a mac.

I must say I am very pleased with the service. I was a bit worried though, because the estimated delivery was about 2 weeks and she was leaving the country for school but it came way before time and was shipped the day after I made the order.

The laptop itself ran smoothly and fast but it is heavy! and the charger is huge! Overall, it's not the best for my sister's field but it works well enough. I would definitely recommend this laptop for personal use or students.

I buyed it on april 2012, it was one of the best laptop on the market on that time. It works very fast, all my work is done with a bunch of speed. I'm an IT Engineer and I use it for my work. I run different virtual machines, Visual Studio 2012 and others memory and processor consuming task. I also a photographer, so, sometimes I use photoshot, adobe lightroom at the same time. I recomment it for any one buying a laptop.

I did a lot of research before I bought my new computer because the last one I had was horrible. I had an older Toshiba Satellite, which never worked quickly from the get-go. I was used to frequent internet shutdowns and major freezing issues in all programs. This is a major upgrade. It only slows when I'm running complex algorithms on large datasets, although even when aligning three whole bacterial genomes, I could still run others applications fine. I ran a program to annotate genomes which I was warned would take hours, but it took about 10 minutes. It stays pretty cool and quiet. Its a very attractive computer, especially with the bluish backlighting and the black aluminum case (the dark umber). The Norton security was a bit of an irritant, as I had to open Windows in safemode to enable its uninstallment. I do like typing on the keyboard for some reason, although it took some getting used to as the keys are spaced differently than on other machines. The speakers sound great! Definitely doesn't sound like a laptop; they also get very loud. I like the fingerprint pass a lot, but it can't be used outside of unlocking your computer and internet explorer, so its functionality is limited if you use a different web browser.

It is heavier than some of my friends' Macs or smaller computers, but this is because everyone else is buying 13" screens or less. I wanted a larger screen some things just can't be visualized in 13". The power cord adaptor is large, but you might not even need to carry it with you, as the battery lasts about 4 hours. The computer is thin and easy to carry. It feels like your holding a textbook. I can't think of any problems that I have had with this computer. Everything works as it is supposed to, and it was a great price for the functionality!

I bought mine directly from HP and it said it would take 2 weeks to arrive. But it actually came in about 5 days, I think.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 3259AV8 15.6" LED Notebook - Intel - Core i5

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 3259AV8 15.6' LED Notebook - Intel - Core i5This is a great business laptop, not for top of the line entertainment use. I have owned 6 laptops over the years and Lenovo's are certainly the best. Three of the six have been Lenovo's. Buy with Amazon for very quick shipping. The installed software is great for the most part.

This is the 2nd Lenovo laptop I bought. I was looking for a laptop with the following fantastic features:

1. Win 7 (I dislike Win 8) gosh, that was hard to find, as 99% of manufacturers now sell their brand new products using Win 8, including Lenovo. This is the ONLY (I may be wrong) Lenovo laptop series that still come with Win 7 {and Pro too}! So I wanted to get one before Win 8 devices completely take over.

2. USB 3.0 this is the laptop that comes with 3 USB 3.0 ports [yes, 3 ports], when most manufactures nowadays market only 1 or 2 USB 3.0 ports. Why USB 3.0? The data transfer speed is very fast.

3. Powered USB 2.0 other than the 3 USB 3.0 ports, this laptop comes with 1 powered USB 2.0. I can use it to charge my smartphone after I shut-down the laptop.

4. ThinkPad laptops generally are meant for commercial use (with better built quality). This laptop straddles between the commercial and consumer worlds. Keeping my fingers crossed that this laptop will last.

5. The screen is matt, not shiny or reflective. So I do not need to worry about finger smudges and my eyes now have an easier time to view the screen without having to constantly adjust the screen tilt to avoid reflection.

6. 7200 rpm Hard drive most manufacturers sell their low to medium end laptops using 5400rpm hard drives. This unit comes with 7200 rpm drive! Higher drive speed means faster response.

The not so good impression:

A. the fan seems to be on most of the time. I worry about failure if it is on constantly. I ended up removing the battery when I use the A/C power. And, I lowered the brightness a little. Hope these steps help to prolong the fan life.

B. No indicator light for HDD activity I can't tell if the hard drive is writing/reading data or at rest. There is no indicator on the laptop.

For the price I paid, I do not expect perfection. I used to pay premium price for a laptop and I even bought the 3yr in-home warranty. I paid $1800 for a REFURBISHED unit. (I should have bought an Apple laptop !) And, it failed 3 months after the warranty expired. I used to like that brand. But now, I avoid it AT ALL COST !

Hope the foregoing helps with your purchase decision.
