Sony VAIO E Series SVE14138CXB 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14138CXB 14-Inch LaptopI wanted to purchase a laptop to use for just entertainment purposes and this seemed to be the most "bang for the buck" model available. To start, the Blu-ray disc player is definitely a nice feature. The video quality with 720p and a 14" screen is very good. Movies played were near seamless. Same with the Wi-Fi connectivity, very good

Sound quality is a bit disappointing. The "built-in stereo speakers with xLOUD and Clear Phase Technology" are mediocre at best. Even with the volume levels set 95% it was just audible. Set above 95% I did experience some cracking. I didn't expect full stereo quality, but I did expect more. In my opinion an iPhone sounds just as good or better.

Web-cam quality is cheesy. When viewing, the image is very pixelated. I haven't looked to see if this can be adjusted. I tried it with the default setting and didn't enlarge the image.

From what I've found using the default setting for power consumption, battery life is closer to five hrs which is still acceptable. If your using it just for movies, 4 hrs.

Overall performance is very good but the touch pad is too sensitive for my taste. I've read other VAIO reviews saying the same thing. I haven't tried adjusting it, but most other reviews said this can be corrected.

In my opinion, Windows 8 does not add value to the PC and is designed more for touch-screen models. If it didn't void the warranty, I would probably switch to Windows 7.

Last and very important, after transferring over 100 gigs of music and movies to my laptop from iTunes/iPod Classic I experienced a software malfunction with the CD/DVD player.(code error) I had to use a system restore and remove the 100 gigs plus the 35 windows updates and start again to correct the problem. If you choose to buy this laptop and are transferring, create several system restore points throughout the process. I wasted 12+ hours and learned the hard way. lol

It takes 5 DVD's to create a systems back-up which is not supplied. Buy yourself a 32gb USB 3.0 flash drive instead and save yourself some time.

fantastic, I love how fast it is, is very well cost me something to get used to windows 8 but nothing else, I recommend it, price, versatility, thanks for this

Great Laptop! Took a little getting used to going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 but I am getting better with the new operating program which does have a lot of good options. Took a little time to get everything set up but well worth the effort.

The Sony Vaio is a very good laptop. Very fast and has just about every feature you could Want. Having the 3.0 USB port is great and the Blue Ray player has worked with every disc that I have tried. The picture quality is excellent. I would highly recommend this Sony laptop.

HP Pavilion DV5T 15.4-Inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 at 2.0GHz, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, w

HP Pavilion DV5T 15.4-Inch LaptopI bought this model laptop in December of 2008.

HP has come a long way, and they are making terrific laptops these days (as compared to the 1990's). At a given price point for an HP model, you will pay more for a competitor's laptop with the same features.

PROS:

* Excellent screen resolution. If you get the nVidia 512Mb video card, it's even better.

* Included components like DVD drive and hard disk are all very good quality.

* Great quality keyboard, with quiet touch action.

* Finger-touch media controls at top are useful.

* Very attractive looking color scheme, rather conservative relative to the flashy designs HP has come out with today.

* HP released a lot of minor model variations based on the DV5, so replacement parts are fairly easy to obtain (and quite cheap on "that auction site").

* Although my left touch pad key eventually became lose (see below), it hasn't experienced any functional failures in my over 2 years of ownership. I've heard a lot of good things about HP reliability, so don't bother with any pricey extended warranties.

CONS:

* Touch pad keys are fragile. The left one gets used the most and the silver coating will eventually rub off. What's worse is that the button alignment will fatigue and the button becomes loose. This will happen if you do not use an external mouse. I strong suggest getting one. I bought a replacement palmrest part, because the touch pad is integrated into it, and it was VERY tricky installing it. You take apart practically the whole laptop, save the monitor. Sufficiently detailed instructions can be found on-line, so the process is doable (in about 2 hours).

* The semi-gloss palmrest helps diminish the contrast of fingerprints, but they are still prevalent. Same is true for the lid top. My solution for this was to get a "second skin" slim case with microfiber keyboard cover that you can use to wipe down prints. This works well as my laptop still looks new, and it's thin enough to still slide the laptop into a case.

* The battery life is a little below average. The duo core processor and high capacity graphics card suck up resources. You won't get more than 2.5 hours per charge, and that's with conserving the screen brightness.

* The power cord doesn't have a tension pull-away feature, so you can totally mangle it if you trip over the cord.

* Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2 is actually a pretty good operating system, but there are some minor quirks. One is that when the laptop comes out of standby mode, it won't recognize the fingerprint reader for about 5-10 seconds, then it'll see it and function properly.

* Mimicry is the greatest form of flattery, and HP imitated Apple by providing a brightly lit logo on the back of the lid. It's really quite bright, though at least it is in the lower left corner of the lid. Worse come to worse, you could always place a dark sticker over it.

* When in standby, a very bright white LED will flash... so in a dark bedroom, it will be distracting (you have to cover it with something).

I went by Best Buy recently and checked out the latest laptop offerings. The available variety of models is quite numerous in the under $1000 price bracket. I would only get this laptop if you could find it for under $700... but not at the over $900 price currently showing. I bought mine for $845 shipped in 12/08, from a discount website.

Acer 11.6" i3-330UM 1.2GHz Notebook |AS1830-33U2G25ncc

Acer 11.6' i3-330UM 1.2GHz Notebook |AS1830-33U2G25nccAT&T also supplies this machine if one buys their laptop with a 3G data-only plan. It has an AT&T SIM built in, but can of course be used with another carrier's MiFi or USB stick. This is a quality, solid little unit and is identical to Acer's upper-market Ultrabook design, "TimelineX." In order to get this into a low price point, though, Acer has installed an Intel Core i3, 1.2 MHz rather than the TimelineXs' i5 or i7 CPU's. In Acer's defense, however, it should be pointed out that this dual-core Intel i3 CPU is INFINITELY superior to similar units which sport such processors as Intel Atom, ARM, AMD "C" or "E's," or Samsung Exynos brains. Those were primarily designed for smartphone use and, thus, have an emphasis on low power consumption rather than raw processing power. The Intel i3 is a, "Sandy Bridge" design, the latest generation of their mobile dual-core line and from the beginning was intended for use in laptops.

From original review: "One other possibly significant difference between this and the Timeline X: this model has a slot for a multi-memory card reader, but that slot is blocked off on the i3 machine." OOOPS! That is WRONG! A day after writing this, the plastic piece I thought was a blank popped off revealing a fully functional card reader! Due to manufacturers' using the same User Guide for several models, there was no indication this reader was covered and that the piece I thought was being used to cover the slot was spring-loaded. So, in short, YES! The Acer Aspire 1830-3595 does, indeed, have a multi-card reader!

SORRY!

Overall, decent performance and very nice quality for a reasonable price. Retailers are trying to get rid of now-obsolete Windows 7 models, so it pays to shop around! There are several fine deals to be had even a couple weeks before Christmas! Second benefit to buying a Windows 7 unit: if you've tried Windows 8 on a NON-touchscreen device, you KNOW you want to stick with Windows 7!!

O Asus O - Asus Eee Pc 701Sd 8G Xp - Galaxy BlackThis is a very lightweight, small netbook computer. It has received many positive reviews. The computer itself would rate 5 stars, however the high price would rate it a 1 star.

People, please compare prices. Amazon makes this very easy. If you want to spend this much money on an ASUS netbook, perhaps you should also look at the ASUS 1000-HE model.

Upgraded the ram, installed windows, and overclocked it. Able to run all my work apps. Runs Unreal tournament 2004, Morrowind, and Fable at playable framerates.

well, it wasn't BLACK, it was WHITE, which is okay, i don't really care about color.

however it WAS advertised as "REFURBIISHED". i looked up Amazon's definition of 'Refurbished', and i don't think this product met the criteria. Specifically, the cable from the power supply was twisted into a dramatic pretzel shape throughout its entire length, and the outer jacketing had begun to disintegrate, revealing the ground braid around the inner conductor. Also, there was no original packaging with the product. Other than that, i didn't find any obvious defects. "Used, Fair condition, power cable shows some wear" would have been a more honest description.

I have this little netbook. Its great for basics like internet, video chat, internet radio, basic gaming, and email. The ssd is very small of 8 gig. Also with Win XP Home on it from the install CD it is very slow. More ram helps, but best to install Joli OS,Leeenix,Puppeee,Android X86, or Win XP Pro from install cd. I did this and now it flies with 1 gig of ram! Cause it is small,it is kinda hard to type on unless you have small hands. I love how small it is and easy to carry.

With external combo drive, you can watch DVD or burn CD's.

I use mine in my room just for basics.

I bought mine refurbished for $129,but just bought another used one for $89.

Want O Asus O - Asus Eee Pc 701Sd 8G Xp - Galaxy Black Discount?

This was one of the first netbooks that actually worked with a trimmed down version of XP.

It was largely limited to CPU and power consumption though.

Played back upto regular DVD resolutions (720x512 pixels), or 480pix; when overclocked using EEECTL plays back some 720p video, though most is with lagging.

Qua games, most DX9 games on a low resolution can be played on it, and in a limited way Dosbox games can be played too.

The best about this netbook is it's blazing fast SSD,

The worst is it's small sized 8GB SSD.

This netbook needs an SSD and RAM upgrade.

A 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SODIMM ram stick works fine, Some 800Mhz SoDimm sticks I tried do hang up on them though (meaning freeze or crash)..

Aside from that, it still works great as a home theatre projector driver for standard DVD-quality video's and TV shows (at 800x600pix).

Also as bittorrent client, or personal webserver; or even as a basic midi router/samplebox!

But the device is largely outdated, and you constantly need to struggle with harddisk and ram space issues.

HP ENVY 14-2130NR Notebook PC - Gray

HP ENVY 14-2130NR Notebook PC - GrayI got this laptop 2 days ago. It came a day early... Thank you Amazon! It was up and running within minutes of being out of its box. It is a very sturdy machine, mostly metal, which is what I wanted. I travel about half the year in a truck so delicate machines just don't work for me. There wasn't really anything on the computer that I would consider to be bloatware. It runs as cool as a cucumber. I can sometimes hear the fan but it isn't a big deal. It is a "pretty" computer in an unusual sort of way. The keyboard is excellent for a touch typist. I like the option of turning off the touchpad while doing a lot of typing. The touchpad works just fine. The display is very good quality. I was afraid it wouldn't work well in sunlight but I can see the display in outdoor light (unless it is turned directly into the sun but who does that?)with no real problem save a little glare from the shiny surface of the screen. I'm not a computer geek and don't know much about the inner workings of a computer but I like this one. It works without alot of fuss and it is fast enough for a pretty impatient person! I have owned an old Macbook which I loved but could not afford to replace. I have owned a Compaq and a Sony Vaio. This computer, so far, is a better made machine than the Compaq or the Sony. I haven't had to deal with HP's Concierge Service or any other support service, which is a good thing, so I can't comment on that. I did a lot of research before making this purchase and I'm happy with the choice I made.

First off, I must say that the description of this computer does it no justice, and neither do the pictures. This is a gorgeous machine. The laser-etchings on the outer shell make this a uniquely designed laptop that you won't see everywhere. The audio (beats by dre) sounds outstanding, at least for a laptop. For best sound quality, hook up a pair of your favorite headphones, beats or not, and prepare to be amazed. For the price, this computer can't be beaten. The keyboard is nice, especially when backlit and it is extremely easy to type on. Despite complaints in user reviews on other sites, the touchpad is actually not half-bad. People complained the multi-touch didn't work, yet I find that it works nicely. This is a very fast and user-friendly computer and it has a whole load of features that laptops in the same price range do not include. I give it 5 stars and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good, solid laptop.

I was looking at all the pc options for inexpensive laptops with backlit keyboards, and this was one of them. The newer HP Envies either have really big screens, or are overpriced. I am writing this review after 4 days of owning this, and I am going to send it back. There are pros and cons with this laptop. I would have considered keeping it, if I didn't get a blue screen, after only 4 days, and after not running that many programs on it.

The good:

1.) Awesome keyboard and clickpad. Some things you have to go in and configure on the clickpad settings in order to get the best performance.

2.) Awesome Beats sound and speakers

3.) The fan was never too loud, and the laptop remained cool to the touch.

The not-so-good:

1.) The screen was definitely bright, but without the proper contrast, I was disappointed with it, as it was difficult to spend to much time on it. Also, the glare was too much at times.

2.) This laptop is heavier than my Dell 15.6" laptop! Definitely much bulkier than I expected for a 14".

3.) Not digging the design on the lid and the raised design on the wrist rest.

The bad:

1.) Took over a minute to boot up to windows, each time.

2.) Blue Screen of Death. Not good on a 4-day old laptop.

Maybe I got a bad one, I don't know. HP offered to send me a replacement, but I opted for a different computer.

The HP Envy series has always been regarded as one of the best premium Windows laptops and this model is no exception. Make no mistake you will feel proud of this laptop's design. It is absolutely first-class. However, keep in mind it is a bit on the big side. While a little over an inch thick may not seem hefty, in practice I found when closed the laptop still seems a bit chunky. It doesn't help it's also pretty hefty in weight thanks to the all metal construction. Basically, it's far from "thin and light." If you're going to be carrying this around often that may be a concern.

The flipside to that is what I stated before, the design of this laptop is simply exquisite. Performance has also been very good. In my use it's always booted up very fast, particularly when coming back from stand-by. It also runs relatively quiet and cool. At times the fan can be audible, but not loud or distracting by any means. Still, you have to remember there's a lot of computer under the hood. Gaming is fairly respectable. Don't expect to play games like Modern Warfare 3 or Skyrim on high settings, but the simple fact it can run games like that with medium settings should give you a sense of how it handles graphics.

Overall, I'm satisifed with this laptop. Heavy weight and thickness, when closed, aside, you can't go wrong, especially in the $849.99-899.99 price range. However, if you truly want something that's thin and light, look elsewhere. This is not as thin or light as some may hope. If you're wanting something truly thin and light, look at models like the Sony Vaio S Series or Dell 14z, but keep in mind those will probably run you more money for an inch less in thickness and about two pounds less in weight.

There's a reason Steve Jobs was on the cover of every national publication that mattered the day he died. He transformed the technology we use every day by creating products we LOVE.

Apple's brand love index is the highest of any major national brand, with good reason. Their products make our lives easier, more enjoyable and do so with so much innovation and operational integrity that other brands with similar products are often relegated to the shadows. Okay, so I'm an Apple fan and have grown accustomed to my iMac, Mac Book Pro, iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. But hold on, because HP (already a terrific company albeit with some fits and starts lately) has delivered a wonderful product in the HP ENVY 14-2130NR.

For a while now, my 13 year-old son has been desperate for his own computer. His previous computer (a mac) was sold to a neighbor who lost everything when Hurricane Katrina slammed into New York's Woodstock region with the force of, well, a nasty hurricane. Because my ex-wife is a generous sort my son's computer was enlisted to help this poor soul, which was fine with my son who's been coveting a PC laptop for some time. Why a PC? Games of course, and with the introduction of Windows 7 I couldn't argue. I'm a writer and though I'm all Mac at home, at the office I'm Windows 7. Sure the haters will slam Windows 7 for all it doesn't do, and for it's limitations, but for the average kid in middle school it's more than good.

Enter last week's search process for the perfect PC laptop. I guess my biggest eye-opener was how many models to choose from. With Mac it's simpler. Pick a screen size and you're pretty-much done. My son made the job easier by picking the HP brand, which has cache' with Millennials. Okay, but did there have to be so many models and options to choose from?

After scanning consumer reports, which always seems to be 6 months behind what's REALLY going on online and at retail, I settled on the HP 6180. I talked to the Philippines (offshore home of HP's sales and customer service brigade) and became more than satisfied that I was buying a fast, I7 processor, machine with many strong points. But wait a minute... was the screen too big, and what about no backlit keyboard?

Another scan of consumer reports led me to the HP ENVY 14-2130NR -actually the 2020NR -which was rated tops behind mac in the 14.6" category. After looking at, no lie, 15 models, I ordered the HP ENVY 14-2130NR from Amazon and I'm happy I did.

The laptop came in a day, was packaged in wonderful, innovative packaging, but that was only the beginning. The machine came out of the box working great. Setup was a snap. Sure there's a bunch of programs my guy could care less about, bloatware, but who cares? Here's what we got:

A fast I5 machine with 4G Ram, a 750G hard drive with a back lit keyboard, blue ray equipped DVD burner, USB 3 connections, all the wifi and camera connectivity built in, along with a sweet 14.6" screen for about $500 bucks less than a comparable Mac. The quality seems terrific. Everything works great, the machine is put together well, carefully, and I'm happy to report both HP and Amazon delivered in a big way.

Is the screen a little nicer on my Mac. Yes. Does my son care... not one bit. He's thrilled. The best news is even in this horrible, crap economy, my boy -with the help of my ex-wife and her boyfriend, both sets of grandparents and yours truly -now has a brand new laptop that he LOVES and can't live without.

I wish getting here was a bit easier. So, if you want a great laptop that rivals Mac but doesn't cost as much, with a backlit keyboard, nice fast processor, decent-sized hard drive with enough craftsmanship and design integrity to make even a Mac guy like me happy, then run don't walk to the HP ENVY 14-2130NR.

One last bit of advice. Amazon has been moving the price of this machine all around. I bought it for $849 minus a $50 gift card that was credited to me at purchase for a roughly net $800 price. As I write this review I see the machine is up to about $950. Here's what I would do... call HP and see what they can do. They offered me this machine for $760 on December 30, 2011. If I didn't need it to arrive the next day I would have done that deal all day long.

HP will deal. Amazon, wise up! But Amazon's customer service is first rate and the machine got here overnight.

Best of luck.

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 43752CU 13.3-Inch UltrabookYou will be VERY unhappy if you buy this machine. I see a few fake paid-for reviews here, but the fact is that the wireless performance is unacceptable. As many others have said, this thing has wifi issues. For me, wifi is only wonky when I'm running on battery, and then only occasionally. The trackpad is a bit finicky. The os is installed on the (slow) hard drive, and NOT on the SSD. No matter, I instantly wiped both drives and installed xubuntu 12.10 when I got this.

If you're going to run linux on this machine:

You must disable IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology).

Disable EFI booting.

Seems like there is an SDL bug with recent Ubuntu and Mint versions that cause the trackpad to be completely unusable when running fullscreen SDL apps. There's a workaround, but it's a pain in the butt.

I would recommend against KDE at the moment, as the Intel HD 4000 graphics do not seem to play well with KWin from my experience. Lots of strange artifacts and screen tearing.

I also tested Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon, which seemed to work fine.

Booting up, with linux installed on the SSD, is ridiculously fast, as is waking from suspend. The machine does stay cool and quiet most of the time.

Oddly, booting from the USB 3.0 ports seems to work only if you're using a USB 2.0 device. I'm guessing this is probably because I've disabled EFI booting, but who knows.

I paid a premium to buy this machine over the newer revisions with i5 or even i7 CPUs to ensure I got a Windows 7 machine. Who knows what kind of crazy hoops I'd have to jump through to disable the SecureBoot nonsense if I'd gone for the newer Windows 8 models.

This is my first non-ThinkPad Lenovo machine. I'm not exactly disappointed with this laptop, but I'd almost certainly spring for an actual ThinkPad next time.

I have only had this computer for three weeks so it is a little early to place a definitive review on line, BUT I can say to date that it is fast, easy to use and very reliable. It is also lightweight and easy to pack for travel. The only issue I have had appears to be one with Windows and likely has nothing to do with the computer--that is a problem with configuring Windows Updates. I hope to have that resolved soon.

Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G (Blue)

Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3GNokia does the dumbest things, no doubt it gets screwed. It is the Rolls Royce of Netbooks. Great Industrial design, Very Sturdy, Beautiful looks, Great sound and Amazing Display. That's it, NOTHING POSITIVE any more.

NEGATIVES:

1) You have Windows starter 7 + 1 Gb (FIXED RAM on Board. You cannot expand it). How in the world this configuration works. Windows 7 requires minimum 2 Gb RAM. Else Load it with XP. This makes this netbook DEAD slow when multiple applications running.

2) When tried to load XP, extra hardware features this Netbook has FAILS. GPS doesn't works. Not sure abt 3G nor hard disk protection software.

3) When you spend almost 500$ on Netbook, you have a GPS just tells where u are located. It can't route NOR give directions. You got to TWEAK and struggle to make it running. Why in the world anybody require a GPS JUST to tell you where u are located. Crazy thought. No GPS drivers for XP and it fails to work when you downgrade to XP from Win7

I purchased this pretty one about a week ago, when NOKIA publish its Booklet 3G I had been highly attracted. But till this year this time then I decide to have it.

Pretty design, like a mini Mac pro,but compare to the speed...I'd rather to say who made this stupid choice to let it run WIN7?

I used to decide change it into Ubuntu, but I found I can't use MS Office(Word Excel)which I should have in daliy works in that Linux system from others' experience.

BTW,I can't upgrade the memory into 2G because it is a integrated part of the main board.

Anyway...it's just a netbook...i notice the price drop down to 393$ but acctually when I buy it the price is 409$,amazon should pay me back of that discount deduction :P

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4050 14-Inch LED Laptop (Fusion Finish, Helios Black)

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4050 14-Inch LED LaptopThe L640-L655 Toshibas have a serious software and BIOS issue with the cooling fan. The issue is well-documented on the official Toshiba forum. The cooling fan runs fast and loud (you will not be able to use this computer in airplanes, libraries, classrooms, group work sessions, etc. due to fan speed). The loud fan will prematurely wear out the fan spindle, and uses excessive battery. I am encouraging anyone even considering the purchase of these lines of TOshiba computers to do online research and search these words: Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly. You will see many threads, but the main one has now thousands of views and elucidates the problem well. If you don't wish to look at it now, you will be looking at it intently once you purchase this model of TOshiba. Thus far, there is no fix for this cooling fan software issue. I am posting here as an owner of a Toshiba in this product line and simply as a method to help my fellow Amazon shoppers with a known issue. You certainly can buy or pass based on your own experience and research. Thank you and happy computing.

6/82011: Still issues. Some Toshiba laptops have a fan and cooling issue that is software related.

Google "Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly on", or highlight and right click what I have type here to see the 13 page thread on this subject. The most recent 5 pages are 3-4 non-Toshiba computer programmers trying to solve the problem as Toshiba has been uncaring and useless. The key is to read the thread from the beginning to review all the people who first define the problem. I encourage anyone seeking a Toshiba computer to review the thread to see if their model is affected before purchase--most models are with AMD processors, but some are Intel latest chipsets (e.g. i5). It is not "a few bad computers", it is computers in each of the series specified. The post on the Toshiba Forum from FunkeA dated May 30, 2011 at 4:11pm has a list of Toshibas affected by this issue.

This post is totally informational for you, a potential buyer, so that you can make your own informed decision about which computer to buy before making the purchase. Whether you buy Toshiba, one of these models, a different model, or a different brand, is completely up to you. Thanks and have fun time computer hunting.

Haven't had this unit very long but all seems to be great at this point. I like the small screen and light weight. I would suggest buying a Toshiba wireless mouse to use with this instead of the built in one or a cheap one like Microsoft. Love the LED screen, crisp and clean picture. First time user of Windows 7 so just getting used to it. More later as I use it more.

Now one of them has a broken left click button too! Not to mention the very cheap feel of these things. My Dell Inspiron is 10 times quieter, better quality and ZERO issues.

Fantastic Windows 8 Touch Ultrabook by HP. Cyber-Monday was the perfect opportunity for this purchase. Our family purchased two of these devices. We would have purchased 3 but there was a limit. This laptop has all the performance and requirements you will need to do majority of computing tasks. Love the superfast 15 seconds Windows 8 boot up time...much thanks to the 32G hybrid mSSD cache. Benefit with a hybrid mSSD gives you more capacity with a traditional 500GB HD plus the ability to quickly start up your computer. This is the way to go for performance / capacity at a lower price. The Envy Touch Ultrabook does have some heft to it but not a deal breaker at all since the thin form factor design keeps it looking fresh and sleek. Build quality is well constructed. Backlit keyboard is a nice feature but the keys themselves could use some improvement. However, I did not have any trouble typing lengthy emails. Touch screen response is excellent and does not exhibit any lag or latency. Intel Core i3 performs well for web surfing, email, and multiple app operations. If you can get your hands on one of these HP Envy Ultrabooks I'd highly recommend getting one to start your Windows 8 touch experience.

I bought this online on cyber Monday. I got it last Friday. Really cool lap top but not impressed with W8

I am happy with the hardware. Its slim, battery live is over 6 hours, with average use. I am sure if you were playing videos or games, it may not be as much, but I figured you may be able to watch a movie start to end without battery running out. It's light, screen gets really smudgy with finger prints.

so GREAT LAPTOP for the price point that I bought it for.

It has 24 Gig SSD drive for quick boot times, which I don't think is in the spec.

It has a back lit key board. The mouse pad it one piece but and right and left click are built in to the pad, so you don't see separate buttons. The right scroll feature is turned off, so you have to go to the mouse settings under control panel to turn it on. I like the two finger scroll and two finger click to get right click menu.

I have noticed some issues with few apps crashing, and even during the initial set up W8 encountered an error and ran me through the initial set up the second time only to duplicate the user account on the computer.

Screen is really nice and crisp. Webcam is average.

Not a lot of fan noise, but then again there aren't a lot of vents on this either. I did NOT notice it running hot or anything. Also the battery is built in, so you can't just pop it out.

Toshiba Black 15.6" Satellite C655D-S5200 Laptop PC with AMD Dual-Core C-50 Processor and Windows 7

Toshiba Black 15.6' Satellite C655D-S5200 Laptop PC with AMD Dual-Core C-50 Processor and Windows 7 Home PremiumI've had this computer about a year and a half, and I think it's pretty spiffy. I bought it at Walmart for $330-ish, I think. After about a year of using it with no problems, the hard drive crashed, and it needed replacing (about $200).

What compelled me to write a review was the comments that the laptop hinges broke. I had the same problem with mine. The plastic at the hinges on the laptop base separated and the screen became loose. I couldn't close it without the computer making breaking noises. After a little examining, I realized that the one of the screws on the bottom of the laptop that hold the hinges to the plastic had came out. I "borrowed" a screw from a different part of the laptop (oops) and it's been fine since. If you have this laptop, I strongly suggest tightening the display hinge screws, which are located right underneath the hinges on the underside of the laptop, with a jeweler's screwdriver to make sure your screen doesn't get floppy, or so that you don't lose a screw entirely.

I bought this Toshiba laptop brand new from a local big box vendor. Avoid buying the laptop if at all possible. If I could rate it at less than 1 star I would.

Cons:

1. Battery stopped charging less than 6 months after purchase. A replacement battery

from Toshiba requires a $176 holding charge on a credit card even though Toshiba customer

support never bothered to determine whether the problem was the battery or the latop itself.

2. LCD screen broke after a tap to the *back* of the laptop. Toshiba's repair depot charged $325, nearly the cost of the laptop itself, to repair. I bought a screen here on Amazon for $72 and fixed it myself in 40 minutes.

3. The absolute worst customer support I've ever come across.

Pros:

1. cheap and efficient if used for basics (web browsing, document handling).

This is the last Toshiba item I'll ever purchase. Toshiba customer support and the product and customer support have been nothing short of infuriating.

I bought this laptop because I am a student on a budget. It works fine but there is a problem. My hinges on my laptop have been broke for about 8 or months. My laptop also make strange beeping sounds too.

This laptop is GARBAGE! DON'T BUY IT!!!!

I bought this laptop in September 2011. It quit working all together in March this year.

First the hinges broke on both sides of the lid. Then the plastic pieces around bottom would pop apart every time I opened it.

I bought this laptop for online use and word processing for college. I was online one day shopping for baby shower things for my sister and the piece of junk crashed. It hasn't booted up since. I press the power button and NOTHING HAPPENS! AT ALL! TOTAL WASTE OF $400

Acer Aspire V3-771G-9441 17.3-Inch Laptop (Nightfall Gray)

Acer Aspire V3-771G-9441 17.3-Inch LaptopI am a fan of smaller laptops if you plan to actually carry them around. This is a pretty good sized machine, but I wanted it to use in place of a Desktop system, so it will seldom move from the top of my computer table. The screen is great -very, very clear at 1920x1080 native resolution. I actually run it with a second, 24" monitor connected, and it has no problem with the dual monitor setup.

While not a barn-burner, it is pretty fast. The experience index numbers are: Processor, 7.8, Memory. 7.8, Desktop Graphics, 5.8, Gaming Graphics, 6.7, and Primary HDD, 5.9. It also doesn't get hot at all -very cool running. The reason for two graphics scores is because it has two graphics controllers. It uses the IBM controller for most applications, and switches to the Nvidia for games and other more graphics intensive software.

We actually bought two of these. My wife uses here for Photoshop, Lightroom, Office, and also plays World of Warcraft. She says it is plenty fast for WOW, and the graphics are very smooth. When not playing games, we both tend to have a lot of programs open at once. We both teach college, and when we are working on class stuff it is common to have Word and several browser windows open at once. If I am doing research, I may have as many as a dozen sources open in browser windows. It handles this with no issues. I teach photography, and do professional work as well, so it would be common for me to have Adobe Lightroom open and also have a dozen or so photos open in Photoshop at the same time. These are 18 MP photos, so they aren't small files. Again, it keeps up with no issues.

All in all, we are very happy with these Laptops. To make it better, we bought them before the price went up a couple of hundred dollars, but they are still an excellent computer at the current price.

My last laptop was an Acer Aspire 7741G-7017. I loved it! We were burglarized and my laptop was stolen. Despite having the Serial number and everything, we never recovered my previous laptop. I was debating between this model and the 1199 model. After a lot of thought, we purchased this one. I love the screen. It's got great viewing angles, full 1080 HD, and is a vast improvement from the last one I had. The laptop comes with 8 GB RAM and can be upgraded to 16 GB. It also has Dual Hard Drive support. I don't regret my decision at all.

This really gives a lot of bang for the buck! Great, clear screen (not glossy, 1080 hd). VERY very fast at everything you throw at it. I recommend investing in a SSD to run Windows and other select programs from and using the 1TB drive for storage of everything else (and for the installation of programs that don't need SSD performance, like utilities and such, reserving SSD space for games or other high performance apps.) I had a 120 SSD waiting to be installed as soon as mine came in and it makes it really REALLY fast! I also recommend looking into a 9 cell battery as the standard 6 cell that comes with it does not last very long (maybe 2-4 hours with normal browsing.)

People have gripped about Windows 8, which I can understand. There is a bit of a learning curve to it, and until you get the hang of it, it is rather frustrating. However, once you do get used to it, it's really not all that bad. I will not let any grumbles about Win8 discredit the great laptop though.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the laptop. I bought it to Skype and keep in touch with family, but also to give me great gaming performance, which it definitely does! I am able to load a game of Civilization 5 in about 30-40 seconds, which is absolutely incredible to me.

EDIT: I am unfortunately reducing the rating by one star. Don't get me wrong, this laptop is AWESOME, but there are a couple oversights that would have completed the package.

First, in my opinion, any laptop of this caliber should be shipped with a 9 cell battery instead of a standard 6 cell. I have a 17.3" HP LA laptop that shipped with a 9 cell and the battery life was much much longer. I know battery life is specific to each laptop, but when you're running a laptop with a V8 engine in it, you are going to want a larger "gas tank" to hold the extra fuel you are going to need (or else you run the risk of being stranded somewhere.) I know you can but a 9 cell for it, but it really should come with it.

Second, with a full 1080 HD display, it's a true shame that it doesn't come with a blu-ray drive, but rather just a DVD drive. Huge loss of potential without having to fork out more money for a blu-ray drive.

I'd still recommend this laptop to anyone who isn't looking for something that is portability focused. Everything that it runs is practically instantaneous.

Only problem, no backlight on the keyboard or indicator light for caps lock and such. But other than that this is a beast of a rig. if this build can't handle what you throw at it...WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LAPTOP, DOING A SPEED RUN OF THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT ON YOUR FLIGHT TO DALLAS?!! This has plenty of juice to do many things. If you have the cash look into this laptop.

I have come to trust Asus and Acer as leaders in well priced equivalent hardware for the money. I am thoroughly impressed with this laptop, great features and very functional. The one downside in my opinion is the lack of an OS install CD so it seems a re installation of the OS is not possible without purchasing another copy of windows. Outside of that it is truly a superb abd stylish machine with great stats for the cost. Go Go Acer!!
