Screen: excellent Full HD matte-type (prevents glares)

GPU: another one of the first few laptops to have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600M series (670M on this model) on this, you will be able to run most, if not, all current games on High settings, even the most demanding games to date.

RAM: 12GB with 1600MHz speed is more than enough to have, and on its current OS (Win7 HP), you can already max out its performance to 16GB (still expandable to 32GB but I don't see the point and the use for now)

HDD: 1 TB = 2 500GB in RAID 0 config is a great plus, boosting the performance and speed of your HDDs to almost double compared to a single setting config.

Sound: the sound system on this laptop is already the best out there, period. The clarity and the crispness of the sounds are very noticeable, and I am playing more music now than ever on this machine.

Keyboard: made by Steelseries, a renowned brand for high-quality keyboards the backlighting is a beaut, and fully-customizable lighting effects to boot!

Battery life: compared to a head-on competitor (one with an 8-cell only) the battery life of this machine lasts around double than the other the other averaging 1 hr 30mins vs 2 hrs 45mins on this thing... I couldn't be happier!

Overall, again with specs vs price, this laptop is currently the one with the best value out there across all 15"s. I heard they will release models of this and its bigger brother the GT70, with GTX675Ms and GTX680Ms soon, but that's a different story.

So, i've had this laptop for over a month now. My desktop was 5 years old, and i needed a new work laptop. So, i was looking for a work and play computer which i have to take home every night. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights i have experienced:

Personal/Gaming PC:

I am a dj, and have been extremely happy with this computer for a few reasons. The sound card is 7.1, it is fast enough to run any audio program i have thrown at it, and the speakers and subwoofer sound very good. I also am a gaming junkie, and have enjoyed BF3 and Civ5 perfectly on this (two of the more graphic intensive games i play). I had to manually switch the discrete card on after the first time i booted up Civ5 and watched it perform only on low settings, realizing that was just the IvyBridge doing work. Regardless, i am happy i waited for the IB. I play games like Torchlight on the plane and in between, and the 4000 does great for the lower end stuff. Even DOTA2, which has poor programming considered, will run just fine on the IB. When you do use discrete, there are really only a few games it cant handle. There is a nice turbo button located just above the keyboard if you want to squeeze an extra 4% computing out of the processors, but its really unnecessary unless you are playing something extremely intensive.

Work:

When i first went to Fry's electronics, i was debating between MSi and Asus. I have 3 friends who bought the last ROG laptops and they all had great experiences. I was inbetween; MSi had significantly better guts than Asus for about $100 less; 2 raided 500 gig HD's, a better discrete card, and more memory? I didnt understand why Asus was lacking so much. So, i took a chance on the brand name after doing a little poking around. Since i am disconnecting at least 2 or 3 USB ports every day, and the power charger probably 2 times a day, i did buy an extended warranty for 3 years for $200. I did this before even taking the computer home. Even after this past month, i am not sure if it was money well spent or not. The case is very sturdy, it is very thick (which i like), and it is made of metal and hard plastic. I am uncertain on the soldering of the ports, so if anything goes out i believe it will be that as i use them multiple times per day. I upgraded to windows 7 business, and am very happy. i have had no connectivity problems with my business network, and have had an easier time getting on our domain than the company supplied laptops! they were able to fit a very nice numerical pad on this keyboard and i am thankful for that.

Keyboard:

The keyboard is really the worst part about the computer, unfortunately. Actually, not the whole keyboard, just the space bar. You have to hit it in the middle of the bar, or at least where the color lights are on it. anything to the outside of the two bars will not register the stroke even if the button presses down. it is a very attractive looking keyboard and the color changing options are easy and quick to navigate. I typically have a wave rainbow when at home, filtering across the keyboard through 5 colors, and quickly switch to red or blue while at work. I have gotten a lot of comments about how great it looks, which makes me so angry that this space bar can upset me so much!

Network card:

The wireless card is top notch. It picks up signal better than my previous external wireless adapter for my desktop, and seems to have a stronger connectivity throughout. Only good things so far. It also worked flawlessly when i went to Germany and Italy.

Weight:

IT. IS. HEAVY. This is a desktop replacement, make no mistake. This is not something you take everywhere with you; it goes from my home desk to my work desk, and not many other places. Still, its better than the old lan party says of a monitor plus a tower, so it beats that. But i would not recommend this to a student who wants to take it to every class to take notes on. Your back will not be happy with you!

Final thoughts:

One last reason i picked this MSi over the Asus was future-proofing: a maximum of 32 gigs of RAM can be installed as well as the ability to have both harddrive bays replaced and upgraded. The asus was maxed out at 12, and had one HD. A SSD will significantly improve the speed of your applications, so eventually i will take that plunge. But that it my point; i anticipate having this computer and improving it for the next 4 years. I can see the ASUS getting tired after about 2 years or so.

When i started this review, i had originally put 4 stars. After writing, it became clear to me that my only REAL complaint is about the space bar. At the conclusion, i bumped it up to a five. If you can get over the space bar issue, you will love the dollar for value of this computer. Just remember, this thing is meant for 2 places; it is not as a buddy you take everywhere! I am reservedly optimistic about the quality of hardware; it seems like it will last a long time but who really knows? Ive never had an MSi before, but i feel good about it since i got the extended warranty. Ive heard some horror stories about their customer service, so if you get a lemon i would just take it back to the retail store. If i ever do have a customer service experience, i will come back and update.

If you are a gamer on a budget, looking for a solid upgrade, you can feel confident in this guy. The screen looks pretty good, the webcam is good, and graphics are outstanding. I personally HDMI out to a 27" samsung LED when i game, and everything looks PHENOMENAL on it. For work, the screen does more than the trick. I am very happy with my purchase so far, and think others with the same mindset will feel the same.

This thing just arrived the other day, and I gotta say I am impressed.

I was able to play Skyrim on "Ultra" with several graphics enhancement mods, at a good framerate.

Pros:

Very powerful (especially for the price!)

Nice keyboard (pretty lights and no flex anywhere, even space bar)

HD matte screen

OUTSTANDING speakers can get loud, and very decent quality for a laptop.

overall nice design, performance, and pricing.

Cons:

Don't like the way the power button "feels"

The mouse-pad and clicker are "meh"...

It is very heavy

Some bloatware (though it does ship with the Win 7 disc but I didn't want to do a clean install, just b/c I didn't want to mess with the RAID configuration).

The fan can be a bit noisy (I hesitate to put this here, because it really isn't tragic or that noticeable, it just is a very little bit louder than one might hope).

Overall so glad I got this awesome laptop!!!

Maybe I just got unlucky. I've never had a laptop with this many problems.

Out of the box I couldn't use any Windows Live clients because the network card blocked access. A few weeks later, a driver update fixed that. Ok. Driver problems happen.

Then trying to get many games to work properly with the Optimus graphics setup is just a giant pain the ass. And anything DX10 has serious problems no matter what I try.

So then RAID array started failing. And then the USB ports. And now the GPU has started hitting 95C.

I contacted MSI through the warranty website. They told me I had to take the laptop apart and replace the thermal compound under the heatsinks before they would consider warranty service. Of course doing that voids the warranty.

Not the quality or the customer service I expect after buying a $1600 laptop. Will never buy another MSI product.

This computer is a great buy, but beware the chassis is somewhat flimsy. Every time I open my laptop I have to press the plastic piece down at the top (controls volume, wireless, etc) because it pops out. It is quite annoying. The plastic piece at the top is also very prone to scratching. I was cleaning it with a microfiber towel and it left minor scratches. I was able to scratch it very easily with my finger nail. Other than that the computer is very fast and equipped to run most of today's common programs. I would recommend it if the first two problems don't bother you. I also recommend backing up your data because the computer ships in RAID 0 (if you bought the model with two hard drives, not SSD). That means if you lose one of the two hard drives due to some malfunction, then your data is pretty much gone. I am able to run very graphic-intensive programs as well as virtual machines with no issues. You will need to update the BIOS (usually by flashing from DOS since MSI doesn't have a GUI installer for Windows 7 64 Bit) if you plan on virtualizing. All-in-all it is a great computer for the price.

This machine is built to withstand almost anything you through at it. The build quality and materials are exceptional. From a industrial design and manufacturing perspective, it is even nicer than a MacBook Pro.

I really like this machine, except for one issue, screen resolution. Apple has proven how beautiful and productive higher resolution displays can make even a laptop. Spending the extra money, weight, and bulk to get a 17.3 inch display should result in more room to work. Because the resolution on this machine is no higher than it is on 15 inch machines, you get a display that isn't as attractive and doesn't fit nearly as much content on it as it could with a higher resolution. This is especially important for content creators and for people that work in spreadsheets, but really it is an issue for all professional users. Apple gets this with their Retina displays, Google gets it with their Pixel laptop, and Dell gets it with their Ultra high resolution series of displays. Hopefully HP will make a higher resolution display available soon on their workstation class laptops.

The only excuse for the screen resolution on this machine is that most people are going to use it in a docking station with external monitors. I have mine attached to 2 Dell U2713HM Ultra High resolution displays. The screen resolution only bothers me when I am using this machine on the road, but then again, that is the whole reason I bought the 17.3 inch workstation.

When you are deciding on which machine to buy, I recommend you consider the screen resolution issue. A 15 inch or even 13 inch machine with similar specs and the same resolution display might save your back and shoulder some pain from lugging this heavy machine around.

Acer C710-2055 11.6-Inch Chromebook (Iron Gray)

I have never written a review before, due to the fact i have never felt the need to. This is a great supplemental computer. I not sure I would have it for my only computer for now but i can see it becoming one in the near future after some needed upgrades (Skype for one). If it had Skype it would be the perfect computer for deployed military members. I have been deployed multiply times so when i say that i want you to know where i am coming from. It is quick and exceptional for travel. People complained about the weight but that complaint carries no weight. 4 1/2 stars is what it deserves but that's not a choice. I would recommend to other computer users who like to explore new IT solutions. Acer is the way to go with this....not the other choices.

Your instinct is to compare it to a Windows PC but this is a new internet device which is 100% cloud based. Its also a Google product machine yet it runs thousands of apps one of which is MS Office 365 which is cloud based if you must have complete compatibility with MS Office files. Security is a strong point since no Win malware can infect this new OS and you don't need anti virus at all.

The display on the Acer is better than the slicker looking Samsung but it also has a VGA port not just a HDMI which means you can create a desktop by porting your current vga monitor, usb mouse and keyboard; it also has a ethernet port not just WiFi. The 2GB memory version is very fast so this 4GB will allow even more tabs to be open and responsive. The 6 cell battery makes it competitive with Samsung version and runs Netflix with no flicker at all. It has 3 usbs which work well with flash, SD, usb HD and optical too but for mostly read only with some exceptions. Unlike Win it does not slow down with use and is being improved ever few months with new functions for free. The remote control Chrome app is great for networking with a Win PC if you must gain access to programs or data remote. Printing requires either a Google cloud based printer (I got an Epson wf-3520; does Apple airprint too and dual side scanning...all for $110..awesome) or a Win PC acting as a print server with legacy printers or you can print as a PDF and then port them with a flash drive to a Win based printer. If you get the $200 version you can buy a $50 6 cell battery from acer to get the extra endurance. If you want a full size screen than look at the HP version.

Update.....Acer recently replaced the HD with a 16G SSD for the 2MB versions which means it boots as fast as the

Samsung now but its unclear if they will do the same for the 4G HD version here; if boot speed is your thing then take a look at that model too.

Overall this is a great choice for any public use PC and for students of all flavors due to price and function........the more people get used to this OS the more they will like it since its the PC we should have had day one not the kludge MS created for us all...............

Buy Acer C710-2055 11.6-Inch Chromebook (Iron Gray) Now

The changes from the $200 Acer C710-2847 to this $280 Acer C710-2055 are just 2GB extra memory (for a total of 4GB) and a 6-hour battery (instead of a 4-hour battery).

$80 is not a bad price for 2GB memory and a longer-life battery. One of the best things about the Acer C7 is that it's upgradeable, so you could buy the $200 machine and upgrade the memory and battery yourself. (At present, March 2013, Acer C7 users mostly seem to get an after-market longer-life battery from a third-party supplier named CDW.) It would probably end up around $80 for an after-market upgrade too, so if you're sure you want the extra memory and battery life, this $280 one would be a fine choice.

I'd still advise most people to get the $200 Acer C7. I've found the 2GB memory and 4 hours of battery life to be good enough; and I can always upgrade later if I change my mind. Even though $80 is reasonable for what you get, I feel a visceral difference in the price. $280 is a remarkably affordable machine; but $200 is almost shockingly inexpensive for a quite good computer.

I love the idea of a laptop-type device that boots as quickly as this one does.

I can leave it on my desk for days, yet when I open the lid, it's ready to log in within 3 seconds! It starts up from a dead stop in 11 seconds!

I have yet to use all of the features, nor test the compatibly with MS Office products, but so far it does about everything that I need.

If all you need is a web-surfing solution, this is the system for you. Light and portable, it offers everything "google". Though you could easily get other webmail based emails on this system, it comes with a gmail shortcut, along with google docs, sheets, etc., as well as google drive (cloud-based storage).

The only issue I've found so far, was when I connected it to an external monitor. After disconnecting it and using it later, I found it still had the reference to the external monitor, so I had to reboot it...10 seconds later and everything was ready to go.

Very glad I made this purchase.

I bought this as an experiment, to some extent, although having downloaded ChromeOS to fiddle with over a year ago, I knew about what to expect. But I'd never used it exclusively on a dedicated machine. I'm very pleasantly surprised.

*The OS: Am learning more all the time, but have found it to be very useful once I resigned myself to using mainly Google Docs, which I had resisted up to now. It was a good thing to learn, because my misconceptions about its limits proved to be pretty much unfounded. Part of this machine's role will be as a travel laptop that will need to access company documents sometimes, and I now know that while I might not be doing heavy editing or writing a new SMS manual in Google Docs it will work for what I do need it to do. I also like the speed of the OS, both starting up and on the web.

The more I learn about ChromeOS, the better I'm liking it. There is a learning curve, but it's pretty easy. There is also a fun factor. I look forward to continuing updates and improvements, which will come to the machine in free, effortless updates nothing to keep track of. Freedom from malware is huge, too. Given what I intend to use it for, thumbs-up on the OS.

*The Hardware: I had tempered my expectations for the Acer, based on its low price I told myself not to expect too much refinement. But it's quite nice, really, if a little plain-vanilla looking; I've ordered a skin to jazz it up a bit. Quality seems good, fit & finish are fine, it's solid, I even like the keyboard. The screen is good, and bright enough for outdoor use I sit and work on the porch at home a lot. Battery life is as advertised about 6 hours. So no complaints about the hardware.

One reason I wanted the Acer instead of the Samsung is that I thought I might put ChrUbuntu on it, for the full OS and apps and the Acer, with its 320GB HDD, has ample room for the extra OS. It also uses an X86 processor, so it will run standard apps like LibreOffice unlike the ARM-based Chromebooks. I still might install ChrUbuntu, though I want to sound the depths of ChromeOS first. But even if I don't put the full OS on, I think the extra HDD room will come handy, as I'd like to keep large DrobBox and Google Drive folders on the laptop for off-line access.

Another thing I like about the Acer's construction is that HDD, memory and battery are replaceable or upgradeable. I like the idea that when SSDs get cheaper, for example, I could swap one in for a performance increase.

This is a good little laptop with surprising quality and speed at a very low price. I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it.

HP g7-1310us (17.3-Inch Screen) Laptop

OK, so to add some perspective to this I will say that I upgraded from a 4 year old underpowered Dell laptop with barely a gig of RAM so any upgrade would be a good one for me. That being said, I am still very impressed with my initial experience with this product. I got it for what I consider to be a very reasonable price under $550 and less than it would have cost direct from HP, even with their promotions and dicounts. The 640gb hard drive is huge for a relatively 'normal' user like me; I have a digital photo album, about 500-600 songs and a few videos saved so storage is not likely to be an issue for me. It comes with 6gb of RAM so the performance is pretty speedy (for me, it's lightning fast compared to my old Dell but that is probably not the case for many others). Set up was a breeze and it worked smoothly right out of the box. My only issue is that I had some older software that is no longer compatible with Windows 7 but that's not an HP issue and it's a minor point regardless.

So, I've only had it for about 5 days but so far it's great. As I said the screen looks great love the 17" size which will come in handy when I stream movies from Amazon. The responsiveness and boot up times are very good so far. The other surprising thing, pleasantly, is how light it is for it's size. I'm not saying I would carry it around with me everywhere but if/when I do need to move it around I can tell that it won't be very much of a burden.

So all in all very satisfied with this upgrade and would certainly recommend this for any normal uses like general web browsing. Not sure what serious gamers would think I imagine this isn't targeted at them anyway but I do play an online golf game with pretty good graphics and it performs very well. Hope my initial impressions are helpful to someone else.

I'd purchased this to replace a $350 Toshiba POS laptop (lol) for my 17 year old daughter. When we received it...we were both impressed at how thin it was for a sizable laptop (over 17"). As an ex-IT admin...I can easily say the most important thing to look for in a laptop is the RAM, which will determine how fast (or slow) your computing experience will be. The hard drive size isn't too important with the large HD sizes currently available. Trust me when I say that if even if you're a heavy downloader/internet user...it'll be a LONG time before you come close to using up 640KB of HD space. That's over a half a TB...which is a LOT of space! Let me break it down into pros/cons:

PROS:

Incredibly fast start. The "welcome screen" pops up with very minimal delay...even after a reboot.

Excellent display clarity I'd rate it equivalent to most HDTV's.

Very fast downloading/use of internet

Style wise, it looks impressive & has the technology to match

Minimal "crapware"

Boasts 6GB RAM for a very reasonable price

CONS:

Makes Mom's 1 year old, 15" HP laptop look like a sluggish netbook (not that I'm jealous...lol).

All in all, for $529, this is an amazing deal!

Just got this laptop last week, and I am VERY happy. I use it mainly for internet browsing, Email, Skype, and movies. A breeze to set up, didn't even have to read directions. It practically set itself up :-) Love the screen resolution. I do not do gaming, if that is your intent, you may want to increase graphics capability. This is a great laptop, at an excllent pricepoint. Very quick response, and reboot time. One tiny annoyance is the "hard click" on the buttons below the touchpad, but I can live with it. The touchpad itself is great and has high sensitivity. Overall, I love it, and would highly recommend.

There's some little known facts about this product that nobody else has mentioned before and maybe you should know:

PROS:

+ You CAN scroll up/down on the touchpad as it comes configured to scroll with two fingers at the same time but you can configure it the way you want it to scroll by just accessing the control panel > hardware and sound > synaptics touchpad.

+ The Speakers are good and loud for a laptop.

+ There's actually led indicators for HDD, power, disc tray, num lock,caps lock, battery charge, webcam indicator, ON/OFF wireless indicator, ON/OFF touchpad indicator.

+ Very quiet fan: you can only really hear the fan when turning ON the laptop afterwards it goes really quiet.

+ The battery charge can last (with the power saver option) 4+ hours which is good for a laptop with a big and vibrant screen.

Neutral:

+The Windows Experience Index awards this laptop with a score of: 5.7 which is determined by the lowest subscore (Graphics: aero performance on a desktop but Gaming graphics has a score of 6.3!), this is good considering that this laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.

CONS:

There's a lot of bloatware indeed but it can be easily removed.

The Design of the up/down arrows is not optimal but usable.

The max resolution for the webcam is 640x480.

So there you have it, the pros out-weight the cons and for a laptop on this price range it's a very good buy.

Acer AS5733Z-4469 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Gray)

This is the second Acer I've bought in the last 6 months my niece needed a computer, so I gave her my AS5253-BZ602 and got this one for myself. Both have been great purchases. Set-up was easy, there was some bloatware, but not an excessive amount. It runs fast and handles multi-tasking well. The screen resolution is very good, as are the speakers. This laptop has two, which is an improvement over my old Acer's one. There are 3 USB ports but no HDMI, which I don't mind, but some might.

Summing up, this computer is ideal for basic use and at $350, a real bargain.

I bought this computer as a secondary computer to augment my online business, because I tend to overdrive processor speeds with too much work all at once. This has now become my primary work computer as it is not only faster but more reliable when processing large files than my netbook computer is. Despite being one of the more affordable computers out there, Acer is one of my favorites. I've had Dell, HP, Toshiba and Acer notebooks, but my Acer has outlasted the Dell and the HPs (with HP being the worst). The battery life isn't the best, but that really isn't a problem for me. I don't feel like I need to go out and blow a lot of money on a laptop when Acers are perfectly serviceable and long-lasting.

This is a reasonably fast computer with a decent display.

As with other Acer laptops, there are two things to watch out for:

The spacing on the keyboard is somewhat tighter than on HP and Dell laptops; it can be hard to adjust to this.

Sound recordings, whether made using the internal microphone or an external microphone, are horribly distorted. Curiously, this is true even if the recording level is set quite low. I've tested this on laptops made by HP, Dell, and Asus, and got respectable sound quality on all three, so I'm guessing that there is a defect in the Acer motherboard chip set.

Dell Latitude 100-L laptop

I have owned the 1.8 P4 version for 2 years and I am considering buying one just to have should anything happen to this one. Even by today's standards this is a very good laptop. The ONLY drawback is that there is only 1 USB port and it is 1.1 but that is very easily solved with a $15 PCMCIA card with USB 2.0 ports. This is not a "gamer" laptop but it is a serious workhorse that you can adapt in so many ways to your needs that you can't with most even today. For example, if you tend to need more battery time than the DVD drive (I upgraded my CD to a DVD burner) then just pop out the DVD and pop in an extra battery. Or like in my case I wanted more hard drive so I bought a 100 gig to replace the main hard drive and by doing a little surfing online I found a parts place that sells an enclosure for a second hard drive that fits perfectly into the DVD slot, so since I do not need the DVD very often I have another 100 gig drive in most of the time, how cool is that!? Add to that that it has S video out, vga out plus a keyboard port in case you prefer a regular keyboard when at home. The video is a respectable 32 meg ATI and I have run some games and applications that were not suppose to be able to run on it according to specs. This laptop only accepts 1 gig total memory but under XP that is fine and will keep you moving along smoothly. I ordered mine with the wireless networking card (802.11b but you can buy very cheaply a G card that will go right in to replace the B card or if yours doesn't come with a card you can add one VERY cheaply) and the speeds are so close to my G PCMCIA card that I use the B card built into mine with my G router.

When you really look at just what your getting for a comparable price these days, for everything this one is capable of I cannot recommend grabbing one of these enough, it is sturdy, nice size screen (14.1) and just an overall feeling of confidence in this laptop because it "feels" durable. When these were brand new I'm told you could not by them as an individual as they were only meant for business purchasers.

Bottom line: you want something worth the money this is it no question. Admittedly I put another $200 into mine but that was all upgrades to the memory and DVD and adding another hard drive. As it comes it is an awesome deal in today's market will run rings around many laptops in the same price range.

Lenovo IdeaPad G780 21823DU 17.3-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown)

I've only had this for a few days but this seems to be a quality machine. I've owned 6 computers so far, 2 desktops and 3 laptops before this, and this seems to blow them all away. It has a button you can push that will take it back to the original factory settings, the same as the day I received it. Which is fine for me as I always have important things backed up on disks anyway. It is blistering fast and the 17 inch display is excellent. I called tech support the day I received it and was on the phone with someone who spoke english as well as I do in under a minute, who answered everyone of my questions and walked me through everything I needed. This is my first experience with Lenovo and I'm really liking this product and this company.

Have had this Laptop for a month now. I simply love it. I have no complaints except one. It came with Macafee. I had Norton 360 that I wanted to put on this machine. Just could not get it too install. Norton tried and tried and tried. No luck. In fact they messed it up trying to fix it that I used the feature that came with this unit the 1 key restore.

This is awesome if your pc does not load or you get a problem. Just shut it off press the 1 key button next to the power button and will restore your pc to factorey state. Now you will lose everything but hey if you use have files that are important you should save them to an external drive anyone.

Recieved the Lenovo IdeaPad G780 21823DU 17.3-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown) in good time, and it was well packaged. Unfortunately the DVD/CD player was not recognized by the Windows 7 operating system. Also the DVD/CD player was not secured in the laptop. Apparently a single screw holds the two together, and it was not installed.

Took the computer to an Lenovo authorized repair shop to be repaired under warranty it was only three days old. Two days later we were told Lenovo would not pay for the repair!!!

We did not even ask how much the repair would cost. If Lenovo can't stand by their warranty for even one screw, we were not interested in keeping their computer.

While we had the computer, it performed admirably, the screen was sharp, hooked up to our wireless easily, etc. Just no DVD/CD player.

We returned the defective computer to Amazon, no problem I cannot praise Amazon enough for holding up their end. If you order one we hope you don't get ours. We have since ordered a Dell Inspiron i17R-2105SLV 17-Inch Laptop (Silver). The Dell Inspiron i17R-2105SLV 17-Inch Laptop (Silver) so far has performed flawlessly.

I've had no less then half-a-dozen notebooks in my lifetime. This Lenovo G780 tops them all.

It powers up in a flash and has many pre-loaded Lenovo helps. One of the best is the Lenovo Solution Center.

It came with 6GB of ram and I quickly upgraded it to 16GB. I know, specs say only 8GB maximum but not true. The two sticks of 8GB installed like a breeze and was instantly recognized.

The keyboard is large enough to be comfortable/not crowded. Keys have a definite snap to them making them ease to use.

The only quirk I don't like is the touch pad seems to get in the way when it's active...moving the cursor at random if you accidentally brush your thumb across it. Ah! Easily solved by hitting the Function Key and F6 to turn off the pad. Once the machine 'wakes' from sleep, the pad is active again.

I use a wireless mouse however; if you wish to use the touch pad, it operates flawlessly. ..very sensitive, and large enough to have full the range of control.

Getting inside the machine to replace or upgrade is a snap. One panel exposes most of the 'workings', no more "This little panel here or this little panel there"

That lovely 17inch screen is near HD quality. I watch movies a lot and with a set of Bose headsets, it's better than being at the theater.

This is one of the best. Buy it and you won't have any regrets.

Fujitsu Lifebook T902 (FPCM1124W)

My biggest hesitation before purchasing the T902 was its weight. I wanted something along the lines of a sleek ultrabook, with the power to handle professional design/art programs and be sensitive digitizer enabled. I have all of those! It's super light to have on your lap, does not heat up the way most laptops do (especially Mac products), and is very light to carry, even with the dvd player and the battery in the laptop. I have the i5 maxed out with 16 gb ram. It's plenty fast and responsive. It restarts and shuts down quickly. There's not much I would change about it, hardware wise. I am running Windows 7 but can't wait for Windows 8 drivers for the Wacom pen to get more evolved.

If you are on the fence, the T902 is definitely worth the expense. There's no better tablet-laptop hybrid for professional artists on the market!

The T902 that I ordered came very quickly and worked perfectly out of the box. Had to email Fujitsu to get them to post updated drivers for Windows 8 64-bit (which they did the same day). Would have been nice for Fujitsu to post the 64-bit drivers the same time after posting the regular Windows 8 drivers. I waited a week prior to emailing Fujitsu. Everything works perfectly to date.

Ordered this laptop online since I needed to replace my sluggish netbook (remember those?) that finally broke.

Pros:

Beautiful, solid hardware.

Extremely light.

Decent battery life, even in high performance mode (3.5+ hours)

Upgrades match what is described on this item (a previous reviewer said he didn't see the upgrades, maybe he got unlucky)

Relatively fast.

Cons:

The trackpad is absolute garbage. It was very hard to type without accidentally clicking a button or popping up a menu. Disabling the trackpad was even harder since Function-F9 does not even work properly on the laptop. Luckily, 1) I typically use an external mouse and 2) I found some drivers that let me disable the trackpad when an external mouse is plugged in (this driver does screw up the default configuration as the mouse cursor suddenly disappears from time to time when using only the trackpad). The trackpad is basically what prevents this from being a 5-star review.

Overall, it's a good laptop, but if you are someone who likes using the trackpad (unlike me), you're gonna have a bad time.

It is really thin and light (one of the main reasons I bought this gear) the screen is not glossy, rich color, crisp fonts. The sound is really good compares to other ultrabooks (Zenbook's audio is made by Bang & Olufsen! cant believe the rich sound comes out from this little body.) I am now willing to bring it everyday with me.

However, few days ago I thought it was slow compares to my other Macbook pro util today I found the laptop was always on "battery saving mode". After I switch it to performance mode it worked a lot faster! impressive model.

HEWLETT PACKARD - HP - TM2T TABLET PC - Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5

I've had this for over a month now, and it's more than I expected. The keyboard is the best I've ever used. Usually, when I have my laptop plugged in at my desk monitor, I use an independent keyboard and mouse and set the laptop to the side. But with this keyboard I've put the old independent in the drawer and flip the tablet screen all the way forward and under the monitor. This keyboard has great spacing, is very solid and responsive. As someone else noted, there is no Home or End key (which I use a lot) but the FN+Left Arrow and FN+Right Arrow do the same things.

When away from the desk I use the touchpad and even though the "button" areas are stiff, you can use multigestures on the pad to trigger button actions so I hardly ever use the "button" areas. When at the desk I use a mouse.

I run Win7, and on a Virtual Box partition, a Linux server. Both OSes run concurrently (I develop Win browser based controls for Linux servers). I run two monitors, one plugged into the laptop's VGA port and the other is being run by the CPU using a Plugable USB (165) Display Adapter. The 1.33GHz processor has no problem keeping up with the two OSes and CPU ran display.

Although I bought it primarily to use the the tablet concept, this jewel has replaced any need for a desktop. But, I do use the tablet 3 times a week for meetings with other designers on the team. I thought the note taking with the stylus would be the best feature, and while it is great, being able to sketch layout concepts on screen instead of scratch paper, and then email them to the participants, has been an extremely useful feature. But, not the BEST, that happened when one of the team members brought his iPad once, and was so humiliated he's never brought his toy a second time.

The only Con, the screen is glossy to the max and really is a fingerprint magnet. An anti-glare film took care of it though. If you plan on working out on the patio in the sun, which I do a lot, plan on getting an anti-glare screen.

Would I buy it again? My daughter's going to get one for her birthday ..... Will I buy it through Amazon? Of course.

Okay, I've only had this thing a few days, but having worked in IT for MS and Xerox for nearly 20 years, I know a thing or two about PCs, laptops, Mac's and hardware along with various software packages. Right before Christmas 2010 I started thinking about getting an iPad2, and noticed the range of various iPad wanna-be's. I was amazed at the offerings and their claims, yet many didn't have any reviews and most were coming out of China. I cringed at the thought of buying some unheard of device that most likely come with worthless warrantees and dubious at best hardware configurations. I even looked at Dell's offering along with EEE pc's little touch netbook's. I very nearly bought one of them thinking... okay... the processor is about the same as the iPad's, the only big differences being Windows instead of iOS and more drive space. I'd come to hate Windows and defected to Mac O S when Vista was released. My big problem was that neither the iPad or my iPhone had enough storage space (I needed much more than 64gb). So a touch netbook it was going to be. I originally saw the HP TM2T and fell in love... but not with the price. HP Direct was offering its tablet for about $1200 as configured, which is very generous with an Intel i5 -470UM processor, 4 gb RAM, 500 gb drive, ATI 5450 graphics card, wifi and Windows 7 Home Premium. Ouch! Pretty pricey for whatis really a netbook. I thought I might as well just buy the iPad and live with the space limitations. Even on Amazonthese were selling for as high as $1900! For that kind of moneyI could just buy a MacbookPro. I really then hesitated when I started reading some of the Amazonreviews of the TM2, TX2 and theTM2T.There are alot of unhappy folks out there. They complained about how it overheatedall the time, about how bad thetouchpad was and the keyboard, the design on the cover.. and any smallinsignificant thing they could think of. Because of all the bad reviews I had felt the iPad was my only choice. After 4 months I looked at the TM2T again as I saw a seller offering a refurbished unit at half the cost of a new one. This PC is just awesome! I've had it for about 6 months and I've been more than satisfied. It works just like a charm. I bought an external DVD plyer/ burner whose brand is HP also and it works with my PC just fine. The Touchsmart software is accessible and lauches easily, making it possible to listen to music, view pictures, create magnets, funny notes and taking goofy pictures and videos. The summum is the touchscreen that makes it possible to write notes quickly and insert genuine signatures on all types of documents (doc, pdf, rtf ...). I don't have enough word to describe this tablet PC but I'll make sure to post a video review as soon as possible.

After a couple of days researching this little gem, reading hundreds of reviews of it and looking at similar products to compare, I took the plunge and bought it in May. I'm a graphic artist so I wanted LOTS of RAM and took advantage of their free upgrade (bought at the HP site) to 6 GB of RAM and the 500GB SATA hard drive.

It came pre-installed with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium and I'd never used win 7 (what a refreshing change from Vista!). I really like the change and the speed. I've tested some of my 32-bit programs (RealDrawPro5 for one) and they work great. Everything runs lots faster than on the Vista, too.

The fingerprint reader is a real plus... no passwords to remember. However, you do have to swipe it 'just right' to get it to work on the first try, but usually now I get logged in on the 2nd or 3rd swipe, so it's not a big deal to me.

I might add that I'm 65 years old and a "techie grandma" who does know her computers pretty well. This little HP gem is outstanding and it was super easy to catch onto Win 7 for the most part. My grandkids loved the touch screen, the built-in video fun, the art program, being able to draw with their fingers, etc, almost as much as I do.

I invested in it because my 17" Acer laptop (with stinky Vista OS) was just too big to travel with and I do look forward to taking my tm2 the next time I have to fly somewhere.

I feel that it is a bit heavy for a 12.1" sized computer but the 6-cell battery and the mechanics for the flipping top might account for the extra weight (around 4 lbs). It isn't a deal-breaker though... it has so many amazing features that far outweigh the small stuff. The battery lasts a long time, too.

I agree about the super glossy screen that someone else mentioned... it's definitely distracting in bright light and is a fingerprint magnet, but it wipes clean with a soft cloth lightly dampened with just a little water. I plan to look for a glare-reducing screen cover for it, soon.

Personally, I have had no complaints except for the high price, but then it does SO much more than any of my prior computers that it's been worth it. I do suggest looking for discount coupons, since I found one AFTER I had bought it that would've saved me $300 off the over $900.00 price tag at the time I purchased it.

laptop performance is good. Good keyboard layout and screen is nicely presentable. The touch pad is quiet poor very hard to click and highlight and select, have to use a mouse most the time with it. Touchscreen it good but not great, can be a bit unresponsive and slow.

ASUS K55A-DS51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

My girlfriend's Acer laptop finally died. The hard drive for my girlfriend's Acer broke after six months. I went to the UPS store to ship it back (since Acer refuses to accept returns sent through the cheaper, USPS priority mail) and paid $50. The guy there said that they shipped out Dells and Acers several times a week. Red flag. Got the computer back after a month, the memory went bad and I had to replace that... the hard drive they replaced was junk and had to be reformatted 3 times... finally, the motherboard crapped out and now it is a giant paperweight. I bought the Acer for her two years ago for $800 and after a year and a half of very light use (mostly internet browsing, word processing), it died for good. I always knew Dell was junk and HP was hit-or-miss, and now I know never to get an Acer.

Onto ASUS. I started doing a bit of research and you will find, no joke, that ASUS and Apple consistently top the list for the most reliable computers. A paltry number of ASUS laptops actually get sent back for repairs. I got this laptop for my girlfriend as a replacement for the junk Acer and we couldn't be more pleased. The laptop stays cool, loads quickly, the keyboard has the right degree of sensitivity, the battery life is decent (about 4 hours). It returns from hibernation almost instantly, like a tablet. She likes playing The Sims 3 and the old Acer would freeze up and overheat every time she played it (keep in mind the Acer supposedly exceeded all the minimum requirements), the ASUS handles it very well. The graphics are decent and everything is very responsive. For light gaming, or older games, this laptop should have no problem. I don't recommend playing COD on here, but if you've got some games that are a couple years old, it shouldn't be an issue. HDMI output works as expected, I frequently plug it into my TV and watch shows and movies without any challenges. Finally, the unit stays VERY COOL, which has always been a problem with past laptops. A welcome change.

Yes, Windows 8 is every bit as annoying as everyone says it is. There are tutorials on the computer as well as a user guide on using Windows 8. I can already tell that Win 8 is going to be another Vista fiasco where they will replace it with a Windows 9 that is actually intuitive. HOWEVER, if you spend a few days with this, you eventually figure it out. Girlfriend is not very tech-savvy, but she is managing fine now. Windows 7 was much better, but that's not the laptop's fault. So far, the laptop has lived up to its claims. It is fast, lightweight, thin (for a 15.6-inch!), the colors are crisp and sharp, and the comprehensive warranty is the best in the industry. Even if you ACCIDENTALLY spill something on your laptop, they will take it in and repair it for you. At least, hypothetically. Not planning on testing that out. Case in point, this was a great budget laptop and I'm thinking of getting one for myself at this rate. The girlfriend loves it and has been gushing about it every day since receiving it. Great for students and light users. You will not find a better deal in this price range. Couldn't recommend it more. If this laptop lasts more than a year, ASUS will have a customer for life.

P.S. I recommend shopping around. Amazon is selling this for $550, but you can find it cheaper elsewhere online (I bought mine from Adorama Camera for $475!).

EDIT: 4/19/2013 Had some difficulties registering the accidental damage warranty through ASUS' website, but I emailed ASUS and they responded within two business days and handled the registration perfectly. Very prompt and professional. Also, another shopper commented about Adorama's bad reputation. I was unaware at the time I ordered my laptop and it's something to consider, but I have to say my laptop arrived brand new, sealed, with free 3-day shipping and no issues. Certainly think twice from ordering from them if you want, but the original intent of my message stays the same price compare. Amazon has great prices, but it doesn't hurt to look around.

My son who is very computer savvy turned me on to the ASUS brand. He purchased one about 6 months ago, essentially the same, but he paid considerably more for his. The i5 Intel processor combined with the memory makes this laptop lighting fast. I was actually quite impressed with the overall quality, fit and finish being exceptional. Can you call a laptop beautiful? Well compared to my HP G71, the statement fits. It's a good looking machine.

One of the first things I did before configuring my preferences on the operating system was to play a DVD to analyze the resolution. Is this bluray HD? The resolution was absolutely beautifully clear, bright and detailed. Now I am not a computer "geek", just an average "Joe" so I cannot lay out for you the technical specs as some will do, but I am extremely impressed by this brand.

Battery life is also again quite surprising compared to the G71. I didn't realize you could have a laptop exceed 3 to 4 hours of operating between recharges. Fantastic battery life.

Mine came with an ASUS 1 year warranty to protect me from myself. It covers the coffee spill that shorts out your computer. Something about liquid and electronics don't mix. It protects me against accidentally dropping it on concrete as I try to put it into my bag. Never heard of a warranty like that before, but I was happily surprised to find it in the paperwork. You need only register it with ASUS to begin the warranty.

As for the speakers, with my G71, I purchased an HP separate speaker because even at 100%, what came out was a whisper. The ASUS was a major improvement.

To sum it up, you will find a lightweight nicely textured cover (low maintenance) that is very attractive in Mocha, brushed aluminum keyboard face and a very high-resolution screen that will impress you. A keyboard that offers soft, but a positive feel. ASUS has exceeded my expectations and am thankful my son turned me on to the brand.

For the price and please take the time to look at the specs, in my humble opinion, the best deal you will find today while you compare apples to apples (no pun intended).

Follow up ~ Several days of play and it is still fantastic. On an unrelated subject, I found a company called Clam that has a software download that gives you the old fashioned "Start Botton". Give you the choice of XP, Vista or Windows 7. So if you feel a bit terrified about the new OS, you can have your comfy chair back.

I'm actually getting used to "8" and I'm liking it. For a little over $525, you will not find anything(same quality brand)even close to it for the money.

P.S. ~ And as for other merchants having it for less, read intently their "Return policy". When I had a small problem, Amazon was instantly there and I didn't have to jump through a single hoop. How much is peace of mind worth? The reason Amazon is my first place to buy, there Customer Service.

I'm writing this review because I saw this laptop has so few. I bought this for myself as my 5-year-old HP laptop that had fan & battery problems from the get-go was finally starting to give out.

This laptop has a large, clear screen with great speakers so it's fine for watching a movie or show while cooking in the kitchen and the HDMI links up very easily with my TV when I plug it in in my room. There are a lot of complaints about Windows 8 out there but you can switch to the Windows 7 view easily if you find it too hard to figure out. My advice is that the world changes whether you like it or not so you might as well get accustomed to doing things in new ways all the time. I found Windows 8 to be much better when it comes to the startup/shutdown speed, hooking up to digital outlets and uninstalling programs like bloatware. The only thing I think is entirely counter-intuitive is how they show you your files. Having a "my computer" button on the Start page would fix this.

This computer is cool to the touch, I can barely hear the fan and the charge is lasting pretty long. It lasts over 3 hours on a full battery. Setting it up for the first time just took 5 minutes and you DO NOT need to have a Microsoft account (hotmail, msn.com) to finish it so don't bother if you don't have one.

If you are looking for a larger laptop with great sound and speed, buy this laptop.

After weeks of research landed on purchasing Asus K55a. Current / previous laptops are 4+ yr old 17" mac book pro and 4 year old Lenovo think pad running Vista. Asus is almost a bridge between Mac and Windows laptops. Consumer reports as of 5/2013 listed Asus 4th in overall tech help and products, Apple being 1st and Lenovo 3rd. Apple run great products at astronomical prices, and Lenovo are cheap IBM's now made entirely of left over parts in China. So hopefully Asus will be a bridge between these two.

The quality and designs of Asus are very similar to Apple with brushed aluminum and key pad feel. Key pad feel is very important for me as I do a lot of typing, and hated typing on my old Lenovo with punch card like feel. Also Asus seems to offer the lowest cost for 3rd gen Intel processors, and hard drive above 4gb, ideal being 8 gb. With this model memory can be expanded to 12 gb for bout $25-$50 for the DIY'er. As for gaming am not a gamer and I can't comment on the visual cards or speakers. However hooked up to HDTV via hdmi cables the picture transfer is as good if not better than my macbook.

And as for Windows 8 it is designed more for the new touch screen pc / ultra books coming out. In a few years everything will be convertible pc's with removable tablet screens. So yes Windows 8 is very annoying if one does not have a touch screen but in the tutorial you can switch back to Windows 7 in the main menu. Products and people claiming you need to buy a product to switch to Wind 7 are a scam! As for price Amazon is great seller usually on top of other main street sellers prices, just keep an eye out for sales. This unit can be had for under five hundred.

Received today and love it. It looks like new. Felt good opening it up and getting to work. Feels very sturdy.

UPDATE my high school granddaughter was looking for a laptop for school and I was more then happy to give her this laptop. She loves it. Kufgator was the seller and the laptop was like new. I don't see his name for this product anymore. Can't vouch for any other seller.

As a simple laptop to carry around to work and not worry about breaking it due to its low cost this one isn't bad to have. I'd rather break this every time over any of my other more expensive laptops. With that said it does have built in wifi which can be helpful. As the other reviewer said it has a rather low processor. It doesn't offer much storage but then again there is a reason why they are cheap. This laptop is what i would consider for a work laptop that just needs simple internet connectivity and maybe a word program. This also wouldn't be a bad choice as a starter laptop for some kids, since it is cheap and kids usually destroy things.

Overall it is OK it has many cons and a few pros. It will work as a beater laptop for work or kids. However as a personal laptop it is less than desirable. As work laptop for someone who does extensive work on computers you'll be frustrated with the simplicity and overall quality of this laptop. However as a work laptop for those whom need only a simple internet connection and word document this one will get the job done...just barely though.

it has built in wifi which is a reason to give it some praise

its processor is just extremely low graded. im writing this review as im trying to watch harry potter from an amazon instant video purchase and its just having load time and lag issues

id look for a laptop with a better processor if i were you. we are in an age of quad core

PROS:

good size hard drive, at 160gb this is common for netbooks,but nice size.

The laptop has decent battery life, lasts about 4-5 hours.

Webcam is convenient for those users who will use this feature.

Wifi internet is standard but worth mentioning. Good wifi range.

size makes the laptop very easy to transport

CONS:

Intel Atom CPU is not a Positive or a negative,

its smooth and steady, fair for the price, but not FAST by any means.

keyboard could have been layed out a little better. feels cramped.

Afterall what do you expect for a budget laptop with 1GB of ram

and a single core intel atom cpu @ 1.6ghz?????????

Overall, i give this laptop 3 stars or a 7.5 out of 10.

Its upto Par with other laptops in this class.

I have had this laptop for almost a year now, bought it July '08 over at Best Buy. It's a great laptop for several reasons. A big plus is the fact that there are two different buttons for powering on, one for 64-bit, and the other for 32-bit. 64-bit is a must, because it unlocks the full potential of 4GB memory, and being a gamer, it truly helps. The HDD is partitioned into two drives, one with the OS (149GB) and a clean partition (140GB). The e-SATA hookup is there physically, but not virtually. What I mean by that is that there is an e-SATA port, but there is not yet drivers for it. I called up Asus and they told me to uninstall/reinstall JMICRON drivers, all in vain. Another con is the processing power, would have liked to see this push 2.0GHz. The screen resolution is considerably lower than most laptops, but it does have Asus Splendid Utility, so there truly is a trade-off there.

All-in-all, considering this being nearly a year old with no visible or virtual wear and tear, I give this a rating of four stars. In the near future, I plan to swap HDD's, because this model makes it possible to do so.
