Alienware M17X 17.3" Black Laptop

Alienware M17X 17.3' Black LaptopPros: Cool looking exterior. Top of the line video card.

Cons: Overpriced. Easily overheats. Sub par components. Poorly engineered on the inside.

I have owned four Alienware computers, including three laptops and one desktop computer. I was severely disappointed with all of them. My first two laptops all died within one year. And, my last two were replacement computers given to me by Alienware and lasted no more than two years. They have a bunch of power under the hood and therefore have a short shelf life. Although Alienware computers look really cool on the outside, it's what's on the inside that is horrendous. With exception to the graphics card, the rest of the components are poor quality. And, the engineers at Alienware did a poor job in constructing the computers. Placing the hard drive next to an overheating video card is not smart engineering. Furthermore, screws were missing on the inside and the casing is typically made out of cheap plastic. I highly recommend to stay away from Alienware and consider other high-end gaming computer brands.

I have owned this laptop for about 8 months at this point. Let me tell you that is by far the fastest laptop I have ever used. It handles most games with ease at full graphics.

That being said there is a major flaw with this laptop. Within 2 months of owning the laptop, the keys started popping off. Dell does have a picture tutorial on how to put this keys back on, but if you follow the tutorial it will often lead to adjacent keys popping off. And if you push too hard when trying to get the keys to latch, then you are out of luck. Luckily my first experience with Alienware customer service ended in a keyboard replacement in less than 2 days from calling tech support. However when it started happening again tech support was not that helpful. I was told I would need to purchase a replacement keyboard for $110! The laptop is under warranty for 4 more months. I was even considering extending the warranty.

My suggestion is to use the built in keyboard as little as possible. I use a logitech keyboard now, my biggest issue is now the laptop does not really travel easily anymore.

Want Alienware M17X 17.3" Black Laptop Discount?

First of all, let me say in plain english, Do Not Buy an M17x or any other Alienware PC.

I remember that once upon a time, dell was a great company. They built quality consoles, they had the warranty that set the industry standard, they cared about their customer support. It is clear to me that these things no longer matter to Dell. A big name and customer loyalty brings us back time after time. Over the past decade, I have given them dozens of referrals and direct purchases, but in the year since I purchased my dell M17x 8GB with dual Nvidia 260M graphics in SLI and an Intel i7 processor, I have actively scuttled just as many purchases by telling all about my personal experience.

Its unstable. Out of the box, brand spanking new, it barely even qualifies as a paper weight. It took me 3 days, and probably 30 hours to get through simply downloading and installing window's updates, firmware mismatches all kinds of errors and stuff that i'll get into later caused me so many problems that its not even funny. If your top of the line(or at least above average) gaming PC can't even run Mcaffee or your own on-board Aliensense programs, then how the hell are you going to run dragon age, fallout, league of legends, even counterstrike or NES Emus?

So, what kinds of problems did I experience? The laptop will power down completely without even attempting to shutdown windows and completely without warning. The screen goes solid white with a streak of random pixels near the bottom. The computer freezes... FREEZES. I haven't seen that since High-school and Pentium 3. and these errors can occur with or without an obnoxiously loud tone blasting me in the face for a minimum of 3 seconds while i try to hard off the PC.

The obvious issues. Well, first of all there was an obvious NVIDIA driver conflict with something on-board. since alien-sense is the only non-standard program that comes pre-installed, i choose to blame that, however it doesn't really matter. after trying 5-6 other Nvidia drivers I find one that doesn't crash my computer every 30 mins like clockwork. Issue two. Poor design. The screen is too far back, the external shell gets too hot, too fast thanks to poor internal cooling, mother-board has no internal sensors on-board, inferior components like the SSD that they charged me to install but has a SLOWER read/write speed than my last HDD. Also the "break me" button at the top right has no tactile response, no toggle and no "oh i didn't mean to break my pc, UNDO" button. see below.

Less obvious problems. the "break me" button also called "stealth mode" instantly insures that you will not have a moment's rest until you figure out what exactly stealth mode is and why you never-ever want to graze that button. Stealth mode is dell's commitment to green in action. when you touch that button, it will instantly shut off all graphics cards except for the one built into the i7(which cant handle much) underclock your CPU, shut down anything that is drawing power from a USB port, kill your wifi, bluetooth, even your keyboard lighting. anything to conserve power, except of course toggle down the brightness on your monitor. you need to use window's settings to do that. and before you ask, no. you can neither disable, nor change the settings of the "break me" button, and no. once "break me" mode is initiated, you can't turn it off. you must unplug the pc, power down the pc restart the pc, go into the Bios for the PC, mess with the settings re-enabling all the stuff that is disabled(like your USB port and hybrid graphics), plug in your pc and restart it. first of all, the creation of such a button on a GAMING PC is just dumb. next everything it does, you can do through settings or by unplugging your externals, windows calls this "power management." third, there is no way to make this setup stable. i need at least one GPU to run windows for more than 5 minutes without it crashing, period. hence the "break me" button.

also if the laptop comes unplugged, perhaps you foolishly wanted to present a project or surf the web while watching TV you must restart your computer in order to re-enable hybrid graphics, i guess the battery just can't provide that much power. I do get an NVIDIA GPU though which is handy if i'm not interested in gaming or doing anything processor intensive. it should be noted that i needed an alienware patch before, under some circumstances, the power supply that came with the PC was recognized as "the proper" power supply. as if i happened to have a compatible low-watt version hanging out at home and i thought "gee, all computer parts are interchangeable" derp.

presently, my alienware pc is more or less stable. but, needless to say, i came very very close to sending it back before everything clicked. i say more or less because it can still glitch out when i push it and every once in a while when i don't. so i say it again. Don't buy an Alienware M17x. I hear good things about ASUS, Lenovo, and even HP if you aren't obsessive about high end graphics.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6464 15.6" Touch Screen Laptop - Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8GHz CPU, 4GB DDR3 Memor

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6464 15.6' Touch Screen Laptop - Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8GHz CPU, 4GB DDR3 Memory, 15.6' HD widescreen CineCrystalTM multi-touch LED-backlit display, 500GB Hard Drive, Windows 8, USB 3.0 - Silky SilverI bought this because I wanted a touch screen for Windows 8.

It includes Windows 8 and the touch screen is wonderful. Once you use Windows 8 with a touch screenyou'll get it. The keyboard is backlita first for me and something I find it convenient in low light.

The touch pad is huge! I'm not sure why, but it doesn't have a scroll region. At least, that I've found. I'm downloading the manual now to find out how to enable it.

Speaking of downloadingthis is one area of Acer support that is frustrating. I'm attempting to download the 96MB manual form the Acer US support site and it's so slow. The estimated download time is over 30 minutes! Come on Aceryou can do better than this.

One of the other reviewers mentioned that the plastic case flexes and it's true. To me this isn't a big deal I don't need an industrial strength case and would rather they use the minimal amount of materials to make something that (in the US) will eventually end up in a landfill.

Overall I'm very pleased with this notebook. This is a slim design that's lite weight and is convenient to carry. It's very quiet and runs cool.

My friend bought this for my eight year old daughter. She insisted on having a touch screen. I had some misgivings on this one due to the other reviews on Acer products having internet issues. This does have some issues in that regard. It isn't consistent though. My daughter uses the internet for school. (she is home schooled) There were days when she'd have to reconnect 3 times in an hour then not again for a few days. Frustrating but not a deal killer. It would only be a real issue if you were playing an online game. I tried to download the new driver, which it did but it won't find it when I search for it. To be honest I haven't tried it again; my daughter doesn't complain about it that much.

The case does seem flimsy but she's had the computer for about 3 months now and it's holding up fine. The touch screen works well, even if it doesn't get used much. Even my eight year old prefers the mouse for most things. The screen itself is very bright and movies look good on it.

The touch pad doesn't work as well as the one the HP I had did. It doesn't seem to be sensitive enough to catch the Win. 8 swipes. I don't know if that can be adjusted or not. I haven't looked.

The keyboard is a typical island keyboard and the back lighting is good. It can be turned on or off; so that is helpful. I only wish there was a light or notice if you turn on/off the cap or number locks. The only way to know if either of these is on or off is to just start typing. It resets the number lock to off when you turn off the computer or switch users. Frustrating, all my other computer default to this being on not off.

Once you get used to Win. 8 this is a good computer. It plays the games she wants to play; specifically Sims3. It also plays a few others but as they weren't designed for Win 8 there are a few glitches. This isn't an issue with the computer though, I know it would play them fine if not for Win 8.

We got this computer when it was a little cheaper and my daughter is very happy with it. I would have preferred it to have more RAM memory though. That was a trade off though for the touch screen. All in all it is a decent computer.

12.5" Intel 320G 4G

12.5' Intel 320G 4GThis is a fantastic Machine with 8hrs battery time. The only remark I have is that it is relatively thick compared to its competitors.

I am forced to use this computer for work. For my personal laptop, I have a Thinkpad T520 (15.6" screen). I think you can tell how this review is going to go...

In short, I loathe this computer. A significant part of my animosity stems from two things: 1) lots of other employees received thinkpads; 2) HP elitebooks receive universally good reviews. Enough to make me think something fishy is going on...(or these corporate drones really are more gullible than people give them credit) And so, dear readers, it is up to Mavericks(TM) such as myself to reveal the truth---these so-called "ultra portable" business notebooks suck.

Apparently, HP's idea of "ultra portability" means shrinking down the screen and the keyboard until it's practically unusable (missing keys!), while maintaining bulk. This thing is bloody thick for such a tiny computer. Some versions---mine included, I discovered to my unending dismay---don't even have an optical drive. I think it has 2 USB drives, located (unergonomically!) in the back, right next to where the giant battery juts awkwardly out.

Furthermore, you'd think the promise of "ultra portability" would include silence. Wrong. This laptop is loud, whirring and groaning in protest if I dare to run more than 3 applications simultaneously. I mean, what do you expect corporate drones to do with a business laptop? Surf the internet in a text-based browser??

And the one thing that's really bothered me: how much other reviewers heap praise on this piece of crap for being "fast," having great specs! But if you look at the specs, you'll see that they're merely decent. Nothing to write home about. Until you look at the accompanying price, and then the absurdity hits you! WTF, how do these people get away with charging so much money for this tiny mediocre piece of hardware?? I mean, have we descended to the abysmal ranks of Apple fanbois??

Other things that annoy me: stupid touchpad. I don't know what's wrong with it. The two-finger gestures or whatever is horribly broken. It's slow compared to my mouse. Computer is heavy for its size. Loaded with HP crapware (although I suppose that's to be expected with any laptop these days). Wifi button: I don't know if it's JUST ME, but I've had the immense displeasure of using two of these things within the past few months, and the wireless button on BOTH machines have crapped out on me. Unhappy coincidence??

tl;dr

If you're looking for a good business laptop, look elsewhere!! Don't believe the insulting, hyperbolic praise this product has received on other sites. You can find better hardware for a better price. Also, the promise of "ultra portability" is an egregious lie.

Buy 12.5" Intel 320G 4G Now

This is a piece of junk. I can;t imagine how HP can still make laptop like this and manage to sell, in 2012. You can almost say there as been zero innovation in this laptop since 2002 or so. I didn't buy this, got as my work computer from office. I am now forced to write the review give how bad is this laptop. In less than 2 months the battery is almost falling off!!. I have an extended battery and the battery lock is so poorly done and quality is so flimsy. Also, the laptop is really fat, unlike what you can see in the pictures. The Compaq laptop I got in 2001 was thinner than this and this was supposed to be HP's business class travel friendly laptop. What a shame to HP's design. Do yourself a favor by not buying this junk.

HP ProBook 4520s XT988UT 15.6" LED Notebook (2.53 GHz Intel Core i3 i3-380M Dual-Core Processor, 2

HP ProBook 4520s XT988UT 15.6' LED NotebookI purchase a lot of laptops for my friends, colleagues, relatives and etc. But This one is much more better and cheaper than other comparable laptops. Bluetooth, webcam, card reader, dedicated num pad, metal cover, color and etc what I liked on that.

Great deal, recommend everyone, of course if the price is as low as when I bought it:-)))

This computer is beautiful looking and extremely fast....

The machines metallic surface is very pleasant to the touch and to the eye. As soon as I took it out of the box I as impressed with it. The dark brown color is truly handsome.

Without being extremely hefty, the machine sports a beautiful large screen and soft full keyboard.

This design and size and speed is without my favorite among hundreds of laptops I have used before.

It has a lighning Fast i3 processor.

And 2GB have proved enough for speed at least for me.

A definite winner....

very nice laptop comes as described, very light too its size is kinda big but its not very heavy at all, appearance is amazing too, very professional for school or work, the camera is awesome very clear on Skype. One bad thing is if you want to upgrade the ram there is no specific spot for it( the whole computer needs to be opened from the bottom which I think pretty much kills your warranty)!, one thing to note the computer at first froze a couple of times I thought there is a problem but don't worry though its a Microsoft windows 7 issue after several updates it works fine.

IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS LAPTOP BEST FEATURES AT THE LOWEST PRICE HP IS THE BEST!

HP Pavilion TX1000Z 12.1" TOUCH-SCREEN Tablet NOTEBOOK LAPTOP PC (AMD Turion 64 X2 DUAL-CORE TL-60

HP Pavilion TX1000Z 12.1' TOUCH-SCREEN Tablet NOTEBOOK LAPTOP PCBefore having problems with the laptop I absolutely loved it. I consider myself one of the more fortunate owners of the tx1000 because my laptop lasted me 3 years to the day. I guess that's quite rare.

THE PROBLEM:

The graphic chipset (Nvidia) overheated so much that the chipset came unsoldered from the motherboard which is death for a laptop since the chipset cannot be removed and replaced. The warranty had already expired, so there was nothing left to do except take a shot in the dark and try and heat the metal connectors of the chipset so they became reattached to the motherboard (there are youtube videos describing the procedure not for the faint of heart). It lasted a week, and came across the same problem. Luckily this doesn't affect the hard drive, so all the information was safe.

HP:

Classless. Okay, Nvidia gives you a faulty chipset and you install it into several different versions of your laptops I'll be more merciful than anyone and overlook that, but at least have the respect for your customers to acknowledge the problem (which HP still refuses to do), and do something to keep your customers (which they wrongly assume will stick around). I have HP stuff all over the house, but no more. Their lack of class, honesty, and a sense of justice have been enough for me to begin looking elsewhere, and to steer people away from looking at HP products as well.

I'll be selling my tx1210us for parts soon (except the hard drive), and that will bring the HP chapter to a sad close.

I am a reseller so I got the review from my customer and he is pleased with the HP pavilion TX1000z. As this is a used system it is very good a few little items but he says it's expected, but overall the supplier was very much on time with shipping and he was very helpful with tracking it and getting to me on a timely basis. He answered my questions from the customer and we were satisfied.

Alienware AM18XR2-8728BK 18-Inch Laptop (Black)

Alienware AM18XR2-8728BK 18-Inch LaptopThe m18x has a very solid build, good looking (but glare-y) screen and fantastic specs.

First off, i was looking for a desktop/road warrior spec that I could use to run a full network of VMs on under linux, play games well under windows and generally do some of the heavy duty computing that's part of my day-to-day life. This probably isn't the laptop for you if you just want to surf the Internet. You can put three harddrives in it, 32 GB of RAM, upgrade it to SLI video cards and upgrade the optical drive to something awesome like a BD-RE drive.

Things to be aware of:

1. This monster is heavy 10-12lb, but shows zero flex when lifting it by one end. When it's resting in your lap, it really digs into your legs. I stopped noticing that after a while. Again, that's not what this is designed for.

2. Screen has tremendous glare issues, but you can solve this with matte overlays. There are some made specifically for this laptop that makes this almost a non-issue. I generally do not have a light source behind me, so this problem is rendered moot.

3. The keyboard does flex some while typing, but it isn't bad. It's just noticeable coming for apple keyboards to this. The keyboard is well laid out, types quickly, and requires a little more force than usual to complete key-presses. Types really well though.

4. It's full of awesome and will consume your undivided attention.

The 18.4" screen is gorgeous and everything I view comes through crisp and clear. Zero dead pixels for me though I doubt that was an issue with this laptop. I look forward to getting my upgrades into the system: additional hard drives and RAM. It's core i7 processor chews through all of my work beautifully and the drive that comes with this laptop is very snappy. Ubuntu & Windows both boot quickly and none of my apps or VMs seem to strain it. The situation will improve drastically with additional drives. I do wish I could throw SSDs into and really let it scream, but I'll have to budget out for that.

Heat dissipation is incredible on this laptop. I have been running seti@home to help identify any hardware issues. It maxes out all 8 cores plus the GPU and it doesn't get hot to the touch. The fan noise is fairly quiet at full speed a plus.

I'd recommend putting the laptop through its paces immediately to identify any issues that might arise in the first 30 days. It's a big investment, but one that I think is justified as it will probably be more than adequate for my purposes for at least 3 years especially with the ease of upgrading all of the components.

I was originally looking at the Toshiba Qosmio desktop replacement laptops but decided to give Alienware a try since I heard great things about one from my friend. I was looking mainly for a powerful multimedia/gaming laptop with a larger than life screen, so Toshiba first came to mind since I've seen them at my local Bestbuy. After I did some research my confidence swayed towards the Alienware. Once received and powered on, I was happy to see it rip through some of my favorite games and video editing software. Overall very satisfied with this gaming rig so far! Time will tell...

-Dislike: Its name is labtop, but actually it is not. You will need a car (with big backpack) to carry this.

My initial impression of the laptop was overall positive. For the most part the laptop worked as expected.

After using the laptop for a little over 4 months the laptop stopped charging when the power was plugged in. The laptop registered the power was plugged in (blue light when plugged in > yellow when unplugged > back to blue when plugged back in) but refused to charge.

I contacted tech support and apparently because it was purchased from Amazon they will not provide support but if I call back during off peak hours they will do a 'customer transfer' after which they might provide support.

Be aware that if you want technical support if things break you should seriously consider purchasing it direct instead of from Amazon as purchasing it form Amazon prevents you from receiving support on the laptop.

~~~
EDIT: I shut the laptop down to save battery and when I turned it back on prior to calling support it was charging correctly again. The manufacturer responded to the review with a link to register the product that gave an error an another link that was supposed to lead to a form that would resolve the error and instead led to the generic support page and the form was not on that page.
The manufacturer also suggested that I could try to get support from their community forums and twitter (I assume instead of jumping through the hoops they set up to actually get technical support on the product). This seems like a very poor substitute for actual technical support.
I am now hooked on alienware. I did upgrade ram to 32g and upgraded the drives to ssd but even before that Photoshop screamed. I was able to put together a 200g panorama in less than a day of processing. Plus my clients think the colored keyboard is really cool. Nothing cheap in this box.
I bought this computer as an upgrade from my old HP Pavilion DV6000. This laptop is basically awesome. Good resolution, and relatively light weight. It is very fast with 4 GB RAM and i3 processor. I've had it for about 3 months and never experienced any issues so far! It never overheats like old HP's. I recommend it for business, school, light gaming, and everyday use.
ASUS G53SX-XA1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of Gamers (Black)
ASUS G53SX-XA1 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of GamersExcellent Laptop, really quiet for the hard work.
I like:
You can play any game at 1080p smoothly with high quality, for competitive gaming you can download at 720p, use filters and the processor does its job giving excelent fps ;).
Virtual machines running smoothly.
The illuminated keyboard gives it good look and uis very comfortable.
The button to save energy or to bring the full Load PC performance is really very useful.
The noise when you are playing really low compared to many notebook of market, has good cooling system with two air vents at rear.
I dislike:
The screen is not made from good quality, "Powered by Epson", but using a FULL HDTV with HDMI port to play casual games and watch movies will be very useful.
The power cord on the right side is where it gets so clogged mouse, They should be put in the back.
Without the power cord putted the performance has a problem to provide continuous power because it shows a small lag when it comes to areas of high load processing and graphics.
I'm very happy with the purchase, i thing that you can't get the same performance with less money.
I leave you the unboxing and 2 min of gameplay
Too Long Didn't Read (TLDR)
Pros:
Illuminated Keyboard
Strong Performance
Ultra Quiet Fans (my laptop sounds like a plane while this one has a quiet hum)
Sleek Design
Cons
Power Adapter Failed in the first 3 weeks
A little big for most cases (the front is narrow, but it widens quite a bit at the back)
ASUS service was nonoperational for me
No Backpack or Mouse as stated in the description
Laptop gets 4 stars but service gets 2 stars making this a 3 star package.
Full Review
This laptop is awesome. When you are playing games it is super fast, but also super quiet. I bought this for my wife as a surprise and she absolutely loved it. But with some critical flaws with the unit and with the company I will not be keeping this. I regret that I must return it.
The problem I experienced was with the power adapter. There is a brass or gold pin that makes the connection so that the unit will receive power. My wife had been using it on a daily basis for about 2 weeks, but it almost always remained plugged in. After this short time the pin that makes the connection has now been pushed into the power cord and it will not charge.
The first thing I tried to do is work with ASUS. Their customer support line (machine) asked for a Return Authorization number before I could talk to anyone and it went on in a loop so that I could not speak to a live person to try to resolve this. I tried calling multiple times. During business hours I tried to use their live chat support but it was offline throughout the day on 2 different days.
Today I scheduled a return with Amazon since ASUS appears to be a company that will not support its customer base will not receive my business. I will be on the hunt for a laptop that is like this, but from a different company.
I am very happy with my G53SX, and believe it to be a great computer for the price. Unfortunately, it was equipped with a somewhat fragile DC power jack which failed about three months after receiving the computer.
I contacted Asus customer service and was met with friendly, efficient service. They e-mailed me a pre-paid express shipping label; my computer was fixed and returned to me within 8 days.
I rate the whole experience as five stars for these reasons:
-Despite the DC jack failure, still a great deal
-Computer was returned w/ missing rubber feet replaced, w/o being asked (I appreciate the little things)
First of all this is a great Notebook i must say.Speed is great. the video card is great and everything else. i was just a bit disappointed in not receiving my backpack and my mouse. right now my backpack is a bit too small for it. but i am looking forward to ordering this backpack which am not seeing on Amazon. furthermore i thought this model was the 3d one but i should blame myself for not researching more.
Amazon did assist me since i didn't get all my goods which was quite nice of them. just awaiting for the confirmation of the transfer.
I was a really disappointed in the speakers though. this is really low. my BB9780 is louder than this. I'd recommend buying A PAIR OF HEADPHONES WITH THIS RIGHT AWAY.
AND FOR ALL BUYER... one of my main reasons for purchasing this laptop was the design. the fact that all the heat exits from the rear from two vents with good fans. i love this notebook.
would purchase another but i think one should be good:D
Leaving this short but sweet. The laptop itself is wonderful and performs as expected and beyond.
Owned for several weeks now and no problems yet.
However, the only that keeps me from giving this listing a 5-star rating is the fact that the "Republic of Gamers Laptop bag and mouse" listed to be included more than once, has NOT come with the laptop.
ASUS Q500A-BHI7T05 15.6' Touch Screen Laptop 8GB Memory 750GB HD - BlackI love this laptop for all the reasons so many other reviewers have indicated, such as its considerable power and its incredibly beautiful, resolute screen. Thankfully, my unit seems to have mostly escaped the issue where the upper left corner of the screen comes unglued (knock wood!) I've got a very minimal protrusion there, but it doesn't seem to be worsening over time so far, and it's a minor enough issue that I'd probably just glue it if it got worse. Unfortunately, I was plagued by the maddening "touch screen stops working when the lid is closed and doesn't work until next cold-boot" issue, and after some time, the touch screen stopped working entirely, save for occasional very erratic points where it would spring back to life. I thought for sure it was a hardware problem and was tearing my hair out wondering whether to get another one or just jump ship to another model, which would have been a terrible shame as I absolutely love this machine. But I'm a stubborn SOB, and had a feeling there might be something more going on than meets the eye. After way too many hours spent trying everything imaginable, I finally stumbled upon the solutions to both forms of touch screen failure the failure upon closing the lid and more semi-permanent failure are both caused by simple, stupid bugs arising from the particular combination of Asus' touch screen interface design and Windows' USB power management algorithms. If your touch screen is going out when you close the lid, you probably have set the computer's power settings so that it "does nothing" upon closing the lid. Changing this setting to "sleep" after first restoring touch functionality, of course fixed the problem instantly and permanently for me, though this will probably only work if you first go into the Windows Device Manager and find the touch screen device it's a "USB Input Device" under the "Human Interface Devices" heading right click and go to "Properties", go to the "Power Management" tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". The more permanent-seeming touch screen failure was instantly resolved by disabling the "USB Selective Suspend" feature in the power settings and cold-booting. So if you're having touch screen problems, chances are excellent that your touch screen is actually fine, and all you need to do is change all the settings as I've indicated here, cold-booting first if necessary to bring the touch screen back to life before you start. Hope this helps someone!
I've had this computer for a couple weeks but having experience with laptops, this one is very well built and is exceptional in every way...mostly anyway.
Not sure what the one star is complaining about because this is backwards compatible and works fine with my router which is not "N". Also, for its size, it is NOT heavy. There are many more that are worse that are not near as good. Battery life also is not bad but not the best. I get four hours of regular use. A little less if using heavy. It does have BT 4.0 which has been fast for me. The 8gb ram and I7 make this smokin' and when SSD's get cheaper, i plan on putting one in! This is not an ultrabook so the one star should go find a machine that is tiny and not serviceable!
Anyway, great screen with touch! I have not had any issues like some have reported. There are a couple things that some may not like. One is light bleed under keys on backlit keyboard and two, finger prints. It is a magnet for them. Also, not sure what they were thinking about when they made the power supply...
Outside of those few minor things, this machine is smokin' fast and worth every penny! It isnt a gamers machine but plays most games very well. But then again, i'm not a true gamer and don't care to be! If you are, you would be better suited to find a dedicated graphics machine.
All in all, i love it and if you are a daily user doing some office work and watching a movie or listening to music, this is the machine for you!
Thanks!
I bought this laptop weeks ago and it is amazing! extremely fast processor, with 8 gb of ram is astounding. The ONLY bad parts to this laptop are the amount of fingerprints this attracts which ill buy a hardshell for, and the 1 mp camera which u can just buy a new one. if your curious if this is a good gaming laptop, I play league of legends and guild wars 2 and they run perfectly fine. Great price and completely satisfied overall.
This laptop has every feature I wanted and then some. I am very pleased with it and have had no problems at all since purchasing almost two months ago. It is fast, has a good battery life, I LOVE the keyboard and the screen size and resolution. The only thing I would have liked would be more than one USB 2.0 port, but I bought a 4-port hub for less than $10, so that solved that. I have not seen another laptop of this caliber for less money, and I believe it is well worth the price.
This is a very nice laptop for the price. Most other laptops with all the same features are well over 1000.00. I purchased mine at Bestbuy for 849.00. The only thing so far that I do not like about it is the speakers which are on the bottom of the laptop. why would anyone put speakers on the bottom of the laptop. I use a headset for my sound and that makes it much better.
Very fast and responsive. The touch screen is very nice and as far a finger prints all touch screens get finger prints so I do not feel that is a major concern.
Would definitely recommend this to my closest friend which I actually did.
You won't be disappointed if you buy this laptop.
Acer V5-431-4689;NX.M17AA.002 14-Inch Laptop
Acer V5-431-4689;NX.M17AA.002 14-Inch Laptopit looks great, sleek, windows 8 as it is. but this thing is driving me INSANE because of its poorest internet connectivity EVER. I mean I have the best connection in my house. all my iPads, iPhones and good old laptop never ever have any issues with my wireless-N router signals. everything is working just fine except this acer thing which is breaking connection every 5 minutes. interestingly i have observed that whenever i do stuff on the internet the frequency of breaking connection increases. as if it cant tolerate the 'load' of the data transfer. now please do not teach me the steps I should take to improve the signal and reception. the problem is with its hardware. in next few days I will decide whether or not it is worth living with this problem or just get rid of the headache once for all.
update: downgraded to 1 star. Guys, DO NOT BUY this piece of CRAP! I guess you get what u pay for.
update: I was about to ship it back. i thought i should give it one more chance. so i chatted with customer service about this wifi issue. they said that it was a well known issue and had a simpler than expected fix. they forwarded me a link. i was supposed to uninstall the wifi driver and then reinstall it from the link. BOOM!!! Problem solved. now it is working like a charm. i am upgrading it to 4 stars. i would have given it 5 but this wifi thing was very inconvenient and acer should fix this problem so that it worked right out of the box.
I bought this laptop on sale on another website. I thought the cpu 1.5 ghz Pentium 987 dual core would be a little slow but truthfully it does quite well if you use this for basic document creation/editing and net surfing. The machine runs quietly and stays fairly cool. Reviews of other V5 laptops mention a problem with the wifi signal but I did not have that problem with my unit. Windows 8 is different but it's nothing you can't learn in a day or two. To minimize frustration go to the Windows app store and download the Windows 8 shortcuts app as soon as you set up the laptop. Note that this laptop does not have a touch screen so you manipulate everything from the touchpad or a mouse. The touchpad (smartpad) was great while it worked but it went crazy in just a few days and tweaking the settings did no good so I had to return the laptop. I will try a laptop with a faster cpu and touch screen next. Apart from the touchpad problem however, this Acer laptop is not a bad machine for the price.
Dell Inspiron 14z Laptop, Intel Core i5-2450m 2.5 GHz, 6 GB DDR3 Memory, 750 GB Hard Drive (7200 rp
Seems to be a nice laptop and is fast. Will let you know if there are any problems later.
This laptop is under my expectation. I faced with a problem in the first day, I tried to split Hard drive but it didn't let me to complete this partition. I am not sure all Dell laptops or just this model has this problem. I even couldn't start to windows. I spent to much time to fix this.
Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)
Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320 15.6-Inch LaptopMy old laptop had burnt out after a few years of good use being a older model Toshiba Satellite. Looking for a decent replacement I found myself to this laptop due to the price. That being said, I feel that my purchase was more than worth it. Coming from Windows 7 to Windows 8 has been a learning curve to say the least but with the program Classic Shell and the fact that Windows 8 has a option to use a "Desktop" interface helped a great deal making my experience with Windows 8 a pretty easy transition.
If you're looking to buy this and downgrade to Windows 7, be careful. After all my research, it's possible the drivers will not work with Windows 7. That was the only reason I did not downgrade myself.
I will say that the sound is absolutely awful and the camera is less than satisfying. Both could have been done much much better. There is a flimsy feel to the laptop itself but isn't that bad. The keys on the keyboard when typing feel like they are very cheap and could break if I were to press too hard. I do not use the touch pad but instead a USB Mouse which works perfectly fine when you disable the touch pad. I never liked them and have always used either a wireless or wired mouse.
This model DOES come with a HDMI output and is fantastic when you hook it up to your HDTV watching youtube or other stuff.
I let my kid play World of Warcraft with this laptop and at the preset "Good" settings he can get anywhere from 20-40 fps on that game alone. Considering my old laptop that is a vast improvement and is playable to anyone looking for a cheap solution.
Be careful with the shipping method though. I chose the "Free Super Saver Shipping" and was shipped VIA Lasership. This laptop was at the facility which was only 20 miles from my house for 2 days. I was fed up and called to see if I would be able to pick it up instead of waiting since usually once the item is at the facility, I normally get the item that same day. They did however work with me, tracked down the package, and allowed me to pick it up myself with no issues.
Overall if you're just looking for something cheap to use for some light gaming or merely looking for something for school work and/or internet surfing, this is a good choice at the price. I have no qualms with it so far except with the sound and camera.
This is a solid purchase for the individual on a budget. It shipped within a few hours after my purchase which was a plus, and got it the next day. The first thing I noticed is that it was bigger than what I thought it was going to be and felt extremely durable. The display is also vibrant but lacking only a little bit compared to a more expensive laptop, which won't disappoint you at all. The sound however, is not to good at all, it's tolerable but you will feel short ended when you play music or watch videos. Also the surface (Black Trax) of the laptop is the same as the cursor pad as well as the click buttons which is a feature I can over look but some people will find it annoying when navigating. I would recommend this laptop for the price and it is a quality product. Windows 8 takes some time to get use too because of the apps but it's a cool experience.
I'm a college student so I just needed a laptop that I could get my HUGE workload done on. This was the ticket. At an amazing price I couldn't pass it up. Yeah that sound is not that great and the camera is a little fuzzy , but then again, that's not what I bought it for. So far I like windows 8. I'm still learning to navigate it but I'm sure with time it will be just fine. The shipping of the product was very very fast so no complaints there.
Want Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax) Discount?
This much CPU for less than $400 and bolted onto that gorgeous Toshiba LCD, makes it a super cheap and just damn fast laptop for a real deal of a price. This is full powered FasterBastard for less than what most junky Celeron netbooks cost.
Let me give the highlights, you can read the appended comment for links to the downloads and longer detail if you're still indecisive:
++ It has one the brightest and lustrous screens you've ever seen on a laptop / that you've every seen in the world. My wife has an iPad with w Retina Display, I also own an exotic OLED (LCD made of electrified algae) and this cheap o laptop beats the Retina and thinly surpasses the stupidly overpriced smuggled OLED.
++ It is fast and responsive, clicking applications and menus just launches them with light bulb speed, and that is still with a BOTTLENECKED 5,400 RPM hard drive. You can install and SSD and it will speed up, but you don't need an SSD to be happy with it and it won't really improve the crappy battery life.
++ Cheap to fix, if you gotta perform surgery on it either before or after your warranty expired and you're paying for it out of pocket, ... the most expensive part is ~two hundred bucks for an entire LCD assembly and the lid. The internals are spacious, you could literally store hand tools inside the case it has so much room and that is also its attribute since the motherboard isn't tightly integrated into a single circuit board. Example: When a Lenovo or Vaio power socket wears out, it has to be carefully cut away and masterfully resoldered with a unique part specific to that motherboard. If you mess up, you'll have to replace a $900 motherboard new or take your chances with a used one that might have a dubious origin. A Toshiba power socket is a standard DC jack connected with two wires and sold at Radio Shack for less than $20, no soldering, just four phillips screws, the rest of the parts are just as easy to work on as your pregnant sisters Camaro.
BUT WHAT JUST SUCKS BLUE DOLPHIN MARBLES ////
The Integrated Synaptics Track Pad has to be the cheapest and crappiest one ever made !!!
I'm convinced Tohsiba is buying these trackpads from North Korean prison camps compared to other Synaptics pads on ThinkPads, Sony's even HP's.... they're usable, but the Toshiba trackpad is as pleasant as rubbing an open blister
Consider investing in a wireless mouse, the Microsoft 3000 Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000series is particularly neat since it works before Windows even boots such as during dry screen startup and POST power up and without installing drivers. It works must as well as their $100+ devices and from auditorium length distances. You can use a Bluetooth mouse / keyboard and Bluetooth performance is good, BE WARNED THE MICROSOFT MOUSE INTERFERES WITH THE BLUETOOTH AND SHOULD BE PLUGGED INTO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OR EVEN FURTHER AWAY WITH A USB EXTENDER SANOXY 15 Foot USB 2.0 Extension Cable OR IT MIGHT DROWN OUT THE BLUETOOTH SIGNALS.
Could they have made it any more awkwardly sized, try finding a good backpack to carry it in and you'll end up buying a bitch bag purse of unisex color since its too long for most backpacks and you'll end up at a Sporting Goods store measuring rifle cases or finding only fuschia bags from American Apparel. Its cool if you're a girl but finding the right kind of heavy and properly dimensioned nylon / kevlar case for this thing will be a quest unto itself.
The whole damn thing is made of a high gloss polished plastic that makes it as slippery and hard to hold onto as an eel skin soaked in KYJelly!!! The rubber feet on the bottom don't matter, this thing can still slide off a cheap leather sofa and if you're clumsy, get ready to work on those internal parts or consider buying the damage protection since it seems to be accident prone. Toshiba listened to their customers and also make the "L" series / "Brushed Chrome" versions that are the same performance, nicer synaptic pads and even better feeling keyboards for less than $50 more.
I purchased three Toshiba Satellites in as many weeks, two C855's and an L755, the first one was so frustrating and the LCD broke after closing it on an SD memory card forgotten on the keyboard, the Toshiba Tech Support was so larcenous I literally stabbed the laptop with a screwdriver. What the hell, the screen was already broken and it was immensely satisfying in ways that I can't properly describe. I was still hypnotized by the cheap speed of it and bought an identical one and parked it two counties away at a friends house and RDP'd to it in case I felt compelled to kill it too, I'd have some miles to separating us and time to calm down. That is the fastest $600 64bit Server I'VE ever built.
Reading the reviews, learned about the L series, sorta like a better trim model BMW with nicer interior and quieter ride and I'm determined to buy nothing else from now on.
For years I was a Thinkpad biggot, but using an overpriced Lenovo now along with its well known quirks just feels like unsatisfying kinky sex compared to a Toshibit. I'll be replacing my familys ThinkPads with Toshibas in the future.
I'm still getting used to the finger-sensitive mouse pad, but don't let that discourage you from trying WIN 8; the integrated mouse pad is really a stellar design. Its really no different than using your fingers to navigate an iPhone screen. Like with anything new, you hafta' read-up, do your homework & finally put your own hands on it & play around with it a little bit. Yeah, I was slow to take-off with it at first, but within 2 weeks, I can now navigate all my screens (Apps, Desktop, Internet, etc.) with ease. Props to HP for the laptop features (3 USB, 1 LAN, Web-cam WITH built-in MIC, SD slot, 1 HDMI port, 4G RAM, etc.). For the price you pay, you more than get your money's worth. The 'Winter-Blue' color scheme with inside/outside 'hp' logo is eye-catching as well as refreshing from the normal, run-of-the-mill basic 'black-on-black' color scheme so often found on laptops. Bravo HP 2000 series!
I like this laptop. The windows eight would not be my first choice if I were to buy another it would not be with the windows eight. There weren't any manuals with it either which I find odd. I would have liked instruction books. The library has a nice book for those that have not used the windows eight before. There really is more to the windows that what I will use. Also It does not have a words program installed and requires one purchased separately which was an unexpected expense. Still it seems like a great buy to me.
This laptop caught our attention with its reasonable price. Usually a low priced machine is missing some key components. This laptop met the specifications we needed. We wanted a work machine and it does that well, along with being a nice looking machine. It is not the smallest or lightest out there but it is fully equipped to work. After two months of daily use it has proven to be our workhorse. It has all we need for office work and can be carried when needed. We were not planning to go with the HP brand, but the price, looks, and specifications convinced us.
