Sony VAIO E Series SVE1713BPXB 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE1713BPXB 17.3-Inch LaptopThis is my second Vaio and it works fine after a week. There's a light "squeak" as I hit the space bar. Hope it will stop.

Keyboard is back-lit and it works great in low or no light.

Screen is big and there are no dead pixels. Speakers are better then on the old one. (VPCEB15FM)

Windows 8 is not as bad as I thought it would be.

Asus G50Vt-X5-RF Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6", V

Asus G50Vt-X5-RF Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6', Vista Ultimate SP2My brother has this laptop, and overall, it is a decent computer. It has a good CPU, a good GPU, and good RAM. There's plenty of upgrade options, as the FSB can handle faster (and more) RAM, and the CPU and GPU are readily upgradeable as well. The major problem is that ASUS didn't design the cooling well. The fan does not have any direct air flow from the bottom of the case and over the heatsinks. It sucks the air from small holes and slots all around the computer's base and then expells it over the heatsinks, instead of standard cooling systems where the fan has a big hole under it for direct air flow. The idea was to make the fan cool the entire system: the disk drive and HDD, the RAM, the mother board, and the battery. But this just results in hot air being blown over already hot heatsinks, and what's more is that there is very litte air flow as it is. There is a mod that can be done where you cut a hole out from under the fan, and this does help to cool it down (I know, I did it to my brother's G50VT). But the temps still skyrocket to well above acceptable temps. Playing Team Fortress 2 we saw 80C plus. I have to say that this is a good computer, but Asus greatly missed the mark in cooling.

Ok, this is the fastest laptop I have ever owned. I actually bought the one with the p7450 2.13GHz, but I upgraded to the P8700 myself. I bought a Refurbished Asus G50VT.

With Vista on it is ok, but with Windows 7 on it its awesome. It can play Far Cry 2 and Call Of Duty MW2 on the highest settings. When playing these games, the video card got to 86C after an hour. My frame rate was in the High 20s mid 30s on the highest settings. The hottest the CPU ever got was 72C. Before I upgraded the CPU, it would idle at in the mid 30s(C). After I upgraded it and used Antec Formula 5 it now idles at 27-29C. The GPU idles at 42C and gets to around 50-55 while surfing the net or watching a video. This laptop runs cool compared to other laptops.

Some people have asked if it can handle 8GB of ram. After little research I found that it can take up to 8GB of memory. 8GB (2x4GB) on eBay costs about $240. Now for battery life.

On power save with the screen on the dimmest I get about 3-3.5 hours of life. Some people think that the light and design on the lid look bad, but I think it looks cool. I just wish that you could turn them off sometimes. Hard drive transfers at about 22 MBPS with Windows 7.

Overall its an excellent laptop. I paid $700 for mine on eBay. 5 Star Laptop!

Pros:

Fast Processor

Good Video Card

Big HDD

Long Battery Life

Fast Wireless Card

Excellent frame rates in latest games

Runs very cool

Cons

Lid Design looks bad to some

Screen slightly low resolution

Can't put a quad core in it

Buy Asus G50Vt-X5-RF Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6", V Now

I bought this when I needed a laptop for class, mainly because I needed a laptop, tablets weren't in existence, and I played quite a few PC games, as there is just some things tablets can't yet replace a laptop for. This thing handled everything I could throw at it, and still does. I later bought a second hard drive, a 320gb, for music and movies etc, to put in the second hard drive slot already included, which is an amazing feature by the by! The factory over clocking is great, and if you install the drivers, the graphics card will run as a m9800gt! Overall I have had this for a few years now and it is still running strong, Asus makes great products, and has one of the lowest hardware failure rates on the market.

The G50Vt-X5 is quite a powerful beast of a laptop. Mine doesn't quite match the configuration at the top of the page, and more resembles the one in the description (2.15GHz). It handles games exceptionally well with the GeForce 9800M GS video card, and is quite upgradeable and expandable for a laptop. The built-in overclocking is pretty handy if you need a little more "oomph", and it handles this overclocking safely since it's part of ASUS's own software suite.

This computer has been one of the best I've owned. I'm not kidding. The only negative is that it's big. It's not a "bring it with you everywhere" kind of laptop. It's a little on the large & heavy side with the battery installed, and it might as well be a 17" system, despite the screen being 15.4" (1680x1050), because it does not fit in 15" laptop bags. You need one designed for 16" or bigger. All this size means it can run with more power, more features, and better cooling for that dedicated gaming-level graphics card.

Despite these minor negatives, the system is a joy to use. Stable, sturdy as a rock, and blazing fast-even in games! HDMI out makes this a great home entertainment center, too. Plenty of USB ports, a firewire port, an SD card reader, a second hard drive bay, surround sound output via TOSlink (requires an adapter), and even a keypad make this a laptop for people who don't want to give up all the good things about desktop PCs. It also runs Windows 7 64-bit like a champ, and ASUS has all the updated drivers for Windows 7 on their website. Oh, and with the power off, you can instantly pop into a simple LINUX-style OS with the touch of a button if you don't feel like going into Windows for some reason.

If you're up to it, you can even upgrade the CPU. That's pretty awesome for a laptop. Every laptop I had before this one wouldn't allow it. ASUS built this system for gamers, and it shows. Heck, when you turn it on, the "Republic of Gamers" logo goes BOOM! on the screen before you even get to the BIOS.

I've been 100% happy with this system. It's not as good as a desktop, perhaps (which is why I eventually chose to part with mine) but it's as good as it gets for a gaming PC under a thousand bucks.

First I must say that I had the G50Vt-X1. It's video died, and I could no longer get a card that fit it. (Planned obsolescence sucks!) I ordered this one to replace it. I put my two hard drives in it and my ram sticks.

It has worked perfectly! I use it everyday for gaming, even dualboxing in windowed mode, etc. Never a problem!

Dell Studio 1537 15-Inch Laptop (2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB DDR2 RAM 320 GB HDD DVD±RW Webcam Vis

Dell Studio 1537 15-Inch Laptop BlueHave owned this laptop for 4 years now and it's still going strong. Can still do anything I need to even though it is so old. People are mentioning that keys fall off, I have never had this problem. Never had to perform any repairs on it. People also mention that the touch activated sound buttons have a mind of their own, its probably because they don't clean their laptop so there is residue built up tricking the computer into thinking that you are pressing the buttons, I've never had this problem.

I bought this Dell Studio Laptop after my thinkpad crashed. I was attracted to its look and fancy touch sensitive buttons on top. But immediately I started noticing that the volume, eject touch buttons have a mind of their own sometimes. I wish they were normal buttons instead of touch sensitive. The mouse touch pad is not good. It works well only sometimes. And the worst part is the keys. I lost some of my keys because they key pad is JUST bad. Ask anyone who used a Dell studio before and you'll see that at least one key is missing. Wait...while I was typing this the volume touch button came on ...on its own and it stays like that and you can't reduce the volume while its on. Also, it heats up pretty fast and the battery life is prob around 1:15 mts max.

Never should've bought this laptop.

Since I bought this computer two years ago, I have been plagued with problems from it. Keep in mind that I use this computer for school, internet and gaming. I have since had to replace the charger cord 4 times. I have had to get an entirely new hard drive 4 times as well due to overheating issues. The hinge on the computer is flimsy plastic and has broken 3 times, which made the entire screen case pop off, as well as making the hinge unable to close which led to the back of the screen actually CRACKING. The eject and sound buttons (as another reviewer mentioned) often choose to work/not work whenever they want. Just from regular use of the keyboard, the keys often pop off. The track pad left-click button has ceased to work for about a year now (but I use an external mouse). I understand that all computers start wearing after awhile, but the problems I have had with this computer started not long after I bought the machine and have been persistent. I would STRONGLY not recommend this to anyone.

One mitigating factor was that the Dell Customer Service has been more than accommodating to all my issues. The extended warranty was a must-have. Still very, very disappointed.

I've owned this laptop for over 4 years now and it is still going strong. Screen is still working just like the first day I got it, all the keys still function, and it can handle almost anything I throw at it. Though this isn't a perfect laptop.

One huge issue I had with it was Windows Vista. It was fast at first on the Dell, but after a while it slowed my Dell down greatly. So I updated its operating system to Windows 7 and it is much faster now, not to mention Windows 7 is way better than Vista in terms of appearance and customization. The upgrade was pretty much flawless too. Only had a delete or upgrade a few of my programs but then it would run normally. It now even beats my girlfriends MacBook on the boot-up. I'm very happy now that it's running Windows 7. I HIGHLY recommend upgrading from Vista to 7. You can find good deals online.

Another issue with this Dell is the processing speed and RAM. As a student engineer, I need something that can handle AutoCAD and other 3D drafting software. The 2.0GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM is nice for web surfing and basic gaming, it's a bit sluggish when I run my AutoCAD software. It takes a good 5 minutes for the program to boot up, but once it's up it can run with some of the newer computers. I'm looking into possibly upgrading the RAM to 8 GB (2x4GB) which is the max that this computer can handle. However I'm currently saving as much money as I can to get me though school. So for now, it is a good computer for my needs.

The other issues I have with this laptop are minor, such as the touch buttons at the top, minor heat issues, short battery life, and minor cosmetic defects. I really don't like touch buttons. I wish they were dim then when you touched them, they brighten up and go back to dim. Instead, they're dark and brighten when you touch them. This gets frustrating when you're on your computer in a dark room and want to adjust the volume. I don't know which one I'm touching until I touch it. But could be worse. As for the heat issues that others have said, my computer actually had very few heat issues, as mine came with the extended life (9 cell) battery that propped the back up. So whenever the fan turned on, it would breathe perfectly fine. However, I have had this battery since I first got the computer, so now it can only hold a charge for a good hour, then I have to plug it in. For me, I learn to live with it and always work near an outlet. As for the cosmetic defects, it's from normal use. I've hardly ever slammed my laptop shut, I try to keep it as clean as I can, and I handle it carefully everyday. In return, the laptop has not fallen apart on me. Even when I dropped it once from waist height, nothing happened except a little damage on the hinge but it still works perfectly fine, hard drive and everything.

I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good laptop for everyday use. Just upgrade the operating system to Windows 7 and treat it nicely.

I've had this laptop for 5 years now. And I can tell you anything about it. For commercial use and gaming its an awesome computer. Granit you can't play wow on ultra graphics but you can play on fair with no lag. The touch buttons on the top I thought was neat. But I do have to agree that I wish they weren't. Sometimes my disc tray will just eject the disc on its own. But that's rarely. Yes this laptop has poor battery life now mine only lasts about 30min. And I never had to replace the power cord at all. This laptop does over heat easily but all you have to do is prop something behind it to let it breath a little and it will do fine. This laptop also has an internal mic for which I can't seem to find. Because it broke on me :p. the only major downfall to this CPU really is that it has vista. You can always upgrade to windows 7 (already did the test for it and this laptop is capable of win7). This laptop is a good gift for someone. I recommend it. If you need more RAM space it can be expandable to 8gb. (2 x 4gb memory sticks). I've never really had a problem with this laptop. But I do think its time for an improvement for me :)

Apple MacBook MB062B/A 13.3-Inch LaptopWhen I first went to buy this, I though to myself, "It's an old version, so I might have to return it." I was way off! This is very fast and responsive. I figured 120GB wasn't a lot, but apparently, at this price, it's very rare! Mine did have a scratch or two, but the old tooth paste method fixed that up fine!

I got it on time and the computer was more than I expected. It runs well and its as if I had bought it at a mac store :)

HP Pavilion g6-2237us 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Windows 8 - 750GB Hard Drive - 4GB DDR3 RAM - USB 3.

HP Pavilion g6-2237us 15.6-Inch Laptop Windows 8 - 750GB Hard Drive - 4GB DDR3 RAM - USB 3.0 - HD webcam - Up to 6 hours of battery life - Latest 3rd Gen Intel Core i3-3110M ProcessorJust got the PC, initial configuration was quite easy. If you are not used to a tablet environment, windows 8 is going to be a bit challenging, but nothing to worry about. There is a short manual for windows 8 showing some touchpad commands and once you access the first thing you will see is a dashboard, where there is a tutorial.

I got caught up by how beautiful windows 8 looks, and just by switching tabs you access classic windows 7 desktop view, which I personally believe to be useful while you become familiar with this OS.

The computer is fast. As soon as I completed the registration process I started to install essential apps for college like dropbox, evernote, chrome... They were set up and ready in no time, meanwhile I updated default apps while enjoying a Walking Dead episode. Gladly the PC performance had no issues with this multitasking. I did order a 4gb ram which I will install ASAP, since nowadays 6gb is the recommended memory ram, having a total of 8gb for $25 is a great threat.

Update 02/27/2013

Just installed 4gb ram ((HP 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 4 GB 1333MHz DDR3-1333/PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM SoDIMM)) and I can feel the difference in performance, I had never install a memory in my life and with a little help from youtube I got it right. The PC was doing great and now is awesome. Highly recommended.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 03/18/2013

-----------------

It's been almost a month, and since day 1 I am waiting to see performance issues since, let's face it, the price is almost to good to be true. I found the following so far:

Wireless not functioning properly: While other devices in the same room such as two more computers and a x-box 360 are streaming videos, surfing the web or playing online, this PC suddenly stops allowing you to surf, or you see the download speed decreases to zero. I know a common issue where other wireless devices interfere with each other's signal but I can not confirm this is the root cause. So anyway, a few times I haven't being able to surf at all for a short period of time.

Touch pad does not respond: I still haven't figured if I am using a keyboard shortcut to disable the touchpad but, I am changing between tabs and different program windows and suddenly the pointer doesn't move while I am on windows 8 dashboard (software issue perhaps?), but the clicking keeps working. I fix it by pressing the windows key twice.

This one is a software glitch, so you can expect it and be aware it has not being fixed on windows 8.

Shortcuts can't be deleted: It only happened to me once, yet I read in forums user having the same issue where, once you deleted a program using the Control Panel, or just deleting a shortcut from your desktop which you no longer require, when trying to delete the shortcut it would not let you. I restarted my computer and the shortcut was no longer there. Just know that your computer is not the problem.

Here you can find information about the broken link:That's what I have found so far. I have already stored around 200gb in software, movies, music, regular PC games, etc. And the PC still takes less than 1 minute to start, which is awesome.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 05/20/2013

-----------------

**WiFi issues**

It has fail from time to time. The only trend I have noticed is when there is a certain update, the WiFi fails partially or completely. I have to go Airplane mode and resume to fixed it. Really lame when streaming.

Update and restart solves the problem as well but... Is just not right...

Since this is the only problem I have encountered and is not often I am giving 4 stars instead of the initial 5.

The laptop is not the most thinnest, but not thick. It is easy to carry. The Windows 8 takes some getting used to, but I believe that you will encounter that with anything you purchase with Windows 8. The battery life is as promissed too. The processor is fast and multi-tasking is great.

The only issue with this laptop is the speakers. If you are going to use it to watch a video or movie, or music, the sound will be better if you plug in your earphones.

My previous laptop was an older Dell. So this laptop is quite an upgrade for me. If you are used to newer laptops already I'm not sure if you will love it as much as I do. Like all other reviews Windows 8 is a unique experience that takes some getting use to but with a little exploring you will. I do like how you can go to the OG desktop view similar to Windows 7. Setup is super easy pretty much turn it on and you are ready to rock and roll. I have always preferred Google search engine but I am already in love with the format of MSN homepage and Bing search. The only problem I've experienced is the mouse arrow freezes on me from time to time. I just wait a few beats and then it moves again but I wonder why this happens? Overall I'm very happy and would recommend this to anyone!

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-6478 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-6478 11.6-Inch LaptopI wanted something netbook sized but with more power and better resolution than a netbook. This little laptop fits the bill perfectly. 11.6" LED screen at 1366 x 768 looks good and the processing power is more than adequate for pushing out HD movie content smoothly.

Only been using it a few days but the battery life seems to be easily in excess of 5 hours with a mix of browsing, listening to streaming music and watching small amounts of video. It is very light and compact and seems well constructed with a nice patterned finish that looks very smart compared to glossy surfaces that show every mark.

Another review points out the trackpad is very small. I agree with this and it does take some getting used to, especially since it is difficult to see the edges of it thanks to the seemless design. It is hard to see how it could be any bigger without making the keyboard smaller, and the keyboard is great because it has full sized keys. So I think the trackpad is the only thing that might not be good for some people. One alternative would be to use a small wireless optical mouse.

All-in-all a great little laptop.

My boyfriend recommended this laptop to me because it was the perfect little size which allowed me to take it around the apartment and around the city to do work. It was a great to replace my old dying laptop. I do agree with the cons with the mouse track though because it is small, but I use an external mouse so it's not really a problem.

I bought two of these (one for myself and one for my wife) rather than buy netbooks. One I upgraded to 8GB of memory with no problems. The keyboard is close enough to full size that neither my wife or I, both touch-typists, had problems. Battery life is easily four hours, and can get close to six if we are conscientious abut power management. Some reviews of the product here and on the web point out the trackpad as being too small and I was concerned when I purchased these, but the price was good. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to find that the trackpad is useful and appropriate, and neither of us felt it was too small. However, we use these as grab-n-go devices that we take to meetings or when traveling so that we are seldom on these more than three or four hours at a time. If you are looking for this to be your only computer and want the benefits of a full-size laptop, go ahead and get a full size laptop. (I have connected it to a 1920x1080 monitor and used it comfortably for extended periods.) If you need something portable and powerful lets you create and collaborate beyond social media, this is a good choice.

This thing can't handle streaming video, it can barely load an internet page without freezing up, and I tried to install an incredibly basic video game just to see if it would work and it froze up while trying to install. It's basically good to type up word documents, but who is going to use a screen this big for Microsoft office? I'm just lucky I realized I had to return it by tomorrow to get a refund. Hewlett Packard XZ028UARABA Hp Dv7-4269wm Ci5-480m 2.6ghz 4gb 750gb 17.3 Win7I absolutely LOVE this laptop! I love the large screen and its crystal clear display. I love the keys and their spacing since I have big hands. The numeric key pad is a plus too. Intel Core i5 processor, check! ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370 Graphics, check! Blu Ray player, check! Countless features to add simplicity and mobility to all my computing needs, check! This thing is fast! Set-up took all of 10 minutes and I was blazing through the Net in no time at all. This laptop has everything I want it to have with the small exception of built-in bluetooth. But that's minor since I can easily purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter for $20. I really thought there would be a noticeable difference in the speed and/or performance when compared to my desktop which has 8GB RAM. But, I have been pleasantly surprised and I may not even need to upgrade from the included 4GB. I also like that it has built in features to conserve battery life when not connected to the power cord. It automatically adjusts certain settings to optimize performance and then automatically readjusts when connected to the power cord. Overall this is a great laptop and I would definitely recommend it. This thing is so nice that I think I'll barely use my desktop now.

Love the computer. Great value for the money. I love the fingerprint reader...not that I really need it for security reasons, it's just fun!

Hp Pavilion Dv7-1245dx Notebook

Hp Pavilion Dv7-1245dx NotebookI bought this laptop refurbished back in April 2009. After about 4 months the hard drive crashed but not big deal I picked up a new one that was faster for $65. It came with Windows Vista and it's speed was ok for the first month but after that it literally took 10 minutes to boot up before I could do anything in Windows. I have since installed Windows 7 and it works GREAT! It boots up in about 1 minute now and I have the same software installed as I had with Windows Vista (if not more). I love the HDMI port so I can hook it up to my 42" LCD tv and surf the internet from the couch (as I'm doing right now). I wouldn't pay $1,000 for this laptop (I paid $550 for it refurbished) but I would recommend this laptop to anyone, no problems here!

I am by no means a "techie," so my review is not going to be technical at all. I have had my laptop for over 6 months now and the only problem I have experienced is it locking up every now and then. I restart and have no problems afterward. This happens maybe once per month. I have heard Windows Vista could be the cause of this, but I am not sure.

I also have a problem finding some of my documents simply because I'm not familiar with Vista, but this is nothing that can't be fixed with a little education.

I love the number pad on the side, I've always been bothered when I have to use the numbers above the letters. I like the chocolate color, it is so much more attractive than black. I have watched DVDs and they play great and look great on the screen. The sound is good, but gets a little "crackly" when too loud. The volume control located on the actual keyboard is a little sensitive, but I have gotten used to it and am okay with it now. I don't find the speed of this machine to be a problem, but I also use an external hard drive for all of my music and photo files, so I'm not using too much memory space.

The only major gripe I have, and it's trivial, is that it has been difficult finding a cute bag that fits the 17" size. All bags that are big enough are usually all black and look too professional or boring. I wanted something a little more colorful and am still searching. But I wouldn't trade the size of my laptop for a cute bag, I can't live without my number keypad on the side. :)

My first DV-7 had a hard drive that went bad within a week. The second began to overheat (and subsequently shut-down) within the first 9 months.

I bought this laptop in June of 2009. In September of 2009, the hard drive on it failed. No biggie, as I had my data backed up and it was under warranty. I figured, it was bound to happen to someone. Well, just today, the REPLACEMENT hard drive has ALSO FAILED.

I was under the impression HP made good quality notebooks. Unfortunately, after my purchase of this particular model, that perception has changed. This notebook runs exceptionally hot, even for low-memory-usage applications. It frequently shuts itself off for thermal protection, which means if you don't have a way to cool this laptop down, you better save your data and OFTEN.

This model also purports to have an ATI Radeon 3200 HD Mobility Graphics Card. If it does, it doesn't like to show itself. The graphics are gritty, slow to respond and overall do not function anywhere near as smoothly as purported to.

I would stay away from this laptop. There are other models available from other manufacturrs that will run double the memory usage and not run anywhere near as hot as this, nor will the hard drives fail every 3 months.

We got this 17-inch laptop because of its price, thinking we were getting a great deal. We should have read more about it. The machine is incredible slow for the CPU it carries and having it run Windows Vista doesn't help much either.

If you are on a low budget, unless you need more processing power, I would rather recommend a netbook. Otherwise, get yourself a Mac laptop. There are some running in the low $1,000's these days that will give you a lot more for your investment than this laptop.

ASUS S405CA-RH51 14.1" Notebook PC

ASUS S405CA-RH51 14.1' Notebook PCthis ultrabook is so thin and so beautifully manufactured by Asus. the aluminum shell simply feels good by touching. it looks so modern inside and out. It's very fast, very quiet and so cool if compares to my other 17" dell studio. it got everything i needed, hdmi, usb, dvd player. the a/c adapter has very very long cable/wire on each side which makes me easier to plug into a remote power source. the long audio/stereo speakers located so nicely on top edge of the keyboard and right below the monitor which allow the beautiful sound to spread forward to you. the volume is so loud and powerful that you have to use your audio/video player's volume adjust bar to lower it. i have become a fan and loyal user of asus since i bought their eee transformer. love it(them) very very much, neither ever gave me any trouble at all. if you don't want to pay outrageous prices for the similar sized Apple, this ultra notebook is what you should consider.

again, love it and again, why i have to buy an Apple to satisfy my vanity?

The laptop is ok, but the most annoying thing is the fan noise, may be the noise comes from the HDD, I don't know.

I compared it with my old thinkpad and HP one, this one's noise is much sharper, although not very loud.

Checked with the seller, decided to keep it otherwise I need to pay 15% processing fee which is about 80 bucks.

So I contact Amazon to inform them the laptop is defective. Amazon passes the buck to the seller, Adorama. Adorama then passes the buck to the manufacturer, Asus. Asus tells me to send in the laptop for repair. Laptop is returned, still defective. I send it in a second time. Asus still has it, and the only reason I found out they still have it is because I contacted them and asked where is my $645 defective Asus laptop, and they said they are waiting on parts parts? Yikes, for a laptop? Does not sound promising. Overall, I am disappointed with Amazon, Adorama, and Asus. All have failed me miserably, and I still don't have a working laptop, over a month after I placed the initial order.

Acer 17.3" i5-2430M 2.40 GHz Notebook | AS7750-6423

Acer 17.3' i5-2430M 2.40 GHz Notebook | AS7750-6423For $450 (when it's on sale) you can't beat it. The display is bright and very crisp, but has a limited viewing angle. That's okay for most uses, but if you're streaming a movie and wandering around the room it can be a pain.

The ram installed is a single 4gb unit. So if you're looking to max the motherboard out to 8gb like I did, don't buy two 4gb chips thinking that it comes with two 2gb ones in it. just buy another 4gb (like this from crucial CT2679447) and you're set.

Audio is a bit tinny, but has a eq in it that I haven't messed with.

Overall, a huge display, fast computer, and unbeatable price!!

Looking for a 17.3" with i5 Intel processor and this was listed for $448.00 right after Christmas. (Also got a $25.00 online Gift Card)

Did my research and decided to buy it. Well no disappointment here. This Acer does a great job with everything you want for a PC under $450. Quick and responsive with all the options you need. Nice that it gives you the option to buy the completed Microsoft Office version or if you just want the basic MS Office, i.e. Word & Excel then you have the option to activate it for the free MS Office version just using Word & Excel.

Whats nice is that Acer quickly reminds you to make a Recovery Disk using DVD's and with the i5 processer, it wasn't long before you had a set made.

Home Wireless connection was a snap and everything was great.

I'm not a computer expert. I'm just an average user and this is the most frustrating laptop I've ever owned.

Just point by point why it's such hard work to deal with:

The keyboard layout is just terrible.

The power button is located on the top left corner in the exact place your thumb naturally goes when picking up or adjusting the laptop resulting in

shutting down your computer accidentally over and over. I've had this computer almost a year and still it happens on occasion that I look under the edge of the laptop for a paper or pen and hit the power button. Due to it's location It's nearly unavoidable.

The sound on this Acer is weak and I know laptops generally don't have great speakers but these are awful and guess how you adjust volume... You must hold down the fn key and use arrow up or down. Yes, you just read that correctly. It's awkward and annoying.

Within three months of having this laptop the 2 on the calculator fell off. The keyboard has unusual flip up keys that can become loose and floppy. I'm not really rough with the computer. I don't travel with it and it stays in my bedroom so this damage is just not wear and tear it's shoddy design.

The hinges on the laptop appear woefully inadequate to me. This laptop has a 17.3" screen with netbook hinges holding it on. I mean the hinges just don't look or feel up to the job and it's worried me the entire year I've used this computer. The hinges aren't slipping or cracked yet but I'm sure it's only because I've been very conscious about carefully closing and never whipping open the laptop. These hinges have been babied.

There were other reviews here a few months ago that said they had pretty grave concerns about the hinges as well but now I don't see them here.

Another annoying feature is the fan exhaust is largely expelled from a vent directly on the edge of the left side towards the back. Again, this is the exact area your hand naturally goes to pick up the laptop giving you a palm full of heat if you've had it on for a while. If you want to hold the laptop in your lap and use it the heat blowing from half the entire left edge is bothersome but it won't bother you for long because as you adjust the computer to avoid the heat you'll hit the power button and then you and the computer will go off and both need to cool down.

Good luck if you're reading this after you've had a problem because the resell is lousy and if you've not purchased this yet and are considering it, keep looking! This is not the laptop you're looking for.

First off, if I wanted to purchase this same system, or a similar one, it would cost me $300 more today.

It is a laptop meant to replace your PC. I mention this because it is a bit on the heavy side, and the large 17" screen is the main reason for it's weight. Worth every pound. Fantastic resolution, great size "in your face", and large enough that you can have it a few feet away and watch a movie.

The first unit that was delivered to me had a malfunctioning sound and recording device. I decided to give it another shot and replace it and it was well worth it. Very good sound, excellent with aftermarket speakers, and a very decent webcam.

The battery life will last you longer than 3 hours, more on the 5 hour range.

The touchpad is very sensitive, one must get used to shutting it off when typing, and use the arrows for scrolling. However, like anything else, it is a very easy task. May be inconvenient at first, but once one gets used to it, it is as easy as hitting the Caps key on and off. But be ready to feel a little irritated at first.

The speed is phenomenal, I did purchase the additional 4GB, but at first wanted to see what it felt like without the 4GB. It went from very good, to better. Well worth the small investment.

It is a complete system. Quiet, good cooling system, won't burn your lap, though after a couple of hours of course you do feel the heatyet it won't burn you.

I don't think that it is possible to get a more complete system unless one was to spend around one thousand.

Highly recommend it, unless you have money to burn for a superior system.

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF122FX/B F Series 16.4" Notebook PC - Black

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF122FX/B F Series 16.4' Notebook PC - BlackI'm giving this one 3 stars. I don't see the big speed improvement when compared to my 2 year old Dell. Then again, I haven't tried any games that would take advantage of the 1G video card or heavy processor intensive work. I mainly use it for everyday use like email, MS Office, browsing, running a web site, etc.

Things I don't like:

Keyboard: It takes getting use to. Typing on the raised keys is defintly diffenent then the conventional keyboards.

Hard drive: Not the fastest at 5400rpm. I might upgrade to either with a SSD or a 7200rpm HD. Also, you can hear the HD spinning, reading and writing under the keyboard. Clicking sounds are a little annoying.

Memory: Only comes with 4G when it could support max of 8G. Comes with 2x2G and if you need to upgrade, you need to pull out the existing memory. It's a waste of money.

Weight: Little on the heavy side.

Comes with a Blu-Ray reader and not a Blu-Ray burner

Bloatware: :Added Value" or not, I've uninstalled tons of unwanted software.

Back-lit keyboard (goes off after few seconds. Can't leave it on all the time)

Things I like:

Large screen, 16.4"

Ease of making backup media in case the hard drive crashes. You'll need 3 DVDs.

Back-lit keyboard (makes it easier to see the letters in the dimmly lit room)

Price; I got mine really cheap as I bought it as an opened box and it was a previously retuned item.

Bottomline: Not a bad machine; I wouldn't have bought it for the full price;

Bought this laptop a year ago and of course after the one year warranty, things go south.

The laptop is flimsy, as the majority of the case is made from plastic. When you pick this thing up, you can feel and hear this thing cracking and flexing. Not Good.

As a result of the flimsy case, components began failing. First the blue ray player went out, but not completely, it still plays blue rays and burns DVDs and cds. It just won't read regular US DVDs. I've reformatted the hard drive, installed all updates, and cleaned it and everything under the sun! After contacting sonny about the problem they recommended the drive needs to be replaced.

Second, the hard drive failed after I reinstalled everything after the failure of the blue ray drive. Luckily I had an extra 320 gig laying around. The disk drive's failure was mechanical, possibly due to the lack of internal support or shock absorbing properties of the case itself. I do not travel much; it's a shame after about 4 trips in a backpack the drive/s fail.

After the hard drive and blue ray drive failures, I was convinced things were ok again. Wrong. As I am Skyping the wife, in mid sentence, the keyboard and touch pad quit working. I'm thinking virus, although I have up to date Norton, driver failure or something. After troubleshooting every software possibility, it turned out the ribbon that connects the display buttons and keyboard, have a bad connection. I wiggled the ribbon, which is located under the speaker panel by the caps lock lights, and the keyboard came back. The touch pad, however still does not work. So I took it all apart to find that a manufacturing flaw caused the ribbon of the touchpad to be pinched between the case. Over the course of a year, the thin and flimsy ribbon wore through.

I use a Bluetooth mouse so I had to borrow a usb mouse to install my Bluetooth mouse, but now everything is working, except the touch pad of course.

With how unreliable this computer is, I would never use it to type an important document, you never know when this thing will fail you. I'm going to give it to my 6 year old to play with.

On the plus side, despite the slow hard drive, the processor, graphics, ram and esata port are great.

The display is fuzzy, not very clear.

Never again Sony.

I purchased a Sony Vaio VPCF122FX and I'm not happy with it. It seems to be running hot all the time. The cooling fan is very noisy and you cannot watch a video or listen to music without this high pitch noisy fan running in the background. HP EliteBook Mobile Workstation 8770w - 17.3"

HP EliteBook Mobile Workstation 8770w - 17.3'This machine is built to withstand almost anything you throw at it. The build quality and materials are exceptional. From a industrial design and manufacturing perspective, it is even nicer than a MacBook Pro.

I really like this machine, except for one issue, screen resolution. Apple has proven how beautiful and productive higher resolution displays can make even a laptop. Spending the extra money, weight, and bulk to get a 17.3 inch display should result in more room to work. Because the resolution on this machine is no higher than it is on 15 inch machines, you get a display that isn't as attractive and doesn't fit nearly as much content on it as it could with a higher resolution. This is especially important for content creators and for people that work in spreadsheets, but really it is an issue for all professional users. Apple gets this with their Retina displays, Google gets it with their Pixel laptop, and Dell gets it with their Ultra high resolution series of displays. Hopefully HP will make a higher resolution display available soon on their workstation class laptops.

The only excuse for the screen resolution on this machine is that most people are going to use it in a docking station with external monitors. I have mine attached to 2 Dell U2713HM Ultra High resolution displays. The screen resolution only bothers me when I am using this machine on the road, but then again, that is the whole reason I bought the 17.3 inch workstation.

When you are deciding on which machine to buy, I recommend you consider the screen resolution issue. A 15 inch or even 13 inch machine with similar specs and the same resolution display might save your back and shoulder some pain from lugging this heavy machine around.

ASUS A55A-AB31-PK 15.6-Inch LED Laptop (Pink)

ASUS A55A-AB31-PK 15.6-Inch LED LaptopThis is a 3rd Generation Intel processor combo, CPU/Graphics ... smaller die size means runs cooler, faster, better graphics, longer battery life. This model has 4 GB RAM ... I added 4 GB more (make sure the added memory is 1600 mHz frequency not 1333. The screen is bright and clear, though I don't know how color accurate it is. The keyboard is excellent ... the touch pad requires only a light touch, but is tricky when typing a lot. When keyboard adapter is plugged in, can setup to auto turn off pad, nice. I prefer an external mouse. Speakers are okay (for a laptop, but no bass frequencies). External Speakers are obviously much better. Wlan (WiFi) has good range. Though I am adding an Alfa wireless range extender...for use in boonies ... see below (1). Camera and microphone are fine for Skype like chats. No bluetooth, but it can be added via USB 2.0 adapter. SD camera card reader is actually SDHC ... I like the new USB 3.0 ports ... two of them and one USB 2.0 ... total of three ... nice.

Overall, a well made, great performing laptop by ASUS ... fast, runs cool and has reasonable battery life for a non SSD storage drive system. Tons of storage ... 750 GB HHD ... Pricing is very competitive. The instant on is really nice. I prefer ASUS build quality, reliability and customer service... one of the best in the industry.

Amazon customer service has also been outstanding on this and many other items I have bought. Cooperative and helpful.

Pros:

-Good battery life (3 hours on high performance)

-No bullshit bloatwares on setup

-Graphics can handle most graphically taxing games on low-med settings

-Great processor for everyday uses

-Comfortable keyboard, great screen

-Simple design, sleek looks

Cons:

-Touch screen a bit too sensitive, delicate to the touches

-Mediocre built-in speakers

For those of you who are looking for a work laptop without heavy tasks such as video editing or hardcore gaming, this is a great laptop. Furthermore, this laptop can handle games such as WoW, Guild Wars 2, and Starcraft at Medium-low settings at 40-50 fps, which is good. Great price for a versatile entertainment laptop

Good comp runs everything smoothly and i've doing a lot of heavy STATA data analysis and massive excel sheets. the battery life is about 2.5 hrs (pretty bad), and the WORST thing about this computer is that the SPEAKERS ARE ON the BOTTOM!!! WTF?! why would you do that? so when i put the laptop on my lap...I can barely hear any sound on full volume!

I didn't realize how wide this computer actually is...it's got that number pad on the side too so just make sure you want that.

and the smart touch thing is retarded...i have had to disable touch click b/c my cursor keeps redirecting while typing.

My wife has had an HP laptop for several years. It had Windows Vista as the operating system. I have an Acer laptop and an HP desktop, both with Windows 7 installed. My wife's computer was fairly slow and didn't talk well with my Windows 7 home network, so when my grandson needed a laptop to do homework on, I jumped at the opportunity to give him the Vista laptop and get a new laptop for my wife with Windows 7 installed.

After having two HP computers (laptop and desktop), I am not enamored of HP computers, so I was looking for something else that had good ratings (on Amazon of course). I like my Acer laptop, but the keyboard is kind of chintzy it flexes a little when you type. Reading reviews on Amazon and Consumer reports, I decided to try an Asus brand laptop. I wanted something with a large enough screen that my wife could comfortably read and that didn't take up a huge amount of counter space since the laptop sits in a countertop desk in the kitchen. 15.6-inches is the same as her old laptop, so that is why I picked that size. Amazon had a good choice with the right options and processor and the blue color stood out as my wife's favorite. So, for all the reasons above, I picked this laptop.

The laptop came boxed and packed well. No problems with damage. It is beautiful. The blue is rich and everything seems of high quality. I had a lot of fun customizing it for my wife's use. I took off all the crapware and added the programs I like to have on my computers like OpenOffice a free clone of MS Office and other similar programs that we use every day.

This laptop is fast and has solid hardware. It has not given me any problems and my wife likes it a lot. I would buy another Asus after my experience. One slight issue I have with the case is that the back sits a little low for me. This makes the keyboard face upward at a fairly high angle for my tastes. I would like to see the back end raised a little higher so the keyboard is slanted more towards the user. That makes it easier for me to find the keys with my palms resting on the counter. I am 6'-2" so I sit a lot higher at the counter than my wife who is only 5'-1". However, my wife says it is fine with her, so that is what counts.

This is a great PC boots fast, has a lot of zip, runs everything that I need to run and I cannot say anything bad about it. I think it was a great buy.

Want ASUS A55A-AB31-PK 15.6-Inch LED Laptop (Pink) Discount?

This laptop has everything I need decent integrated graphics, fast CPU, upgrade-ability, won't burn my legs... on the surface, it ticked all the checkboxes. But I had to return it because of the space bar.

I type A LOT and my wife types a lot, too. She's going to use this laptop for school, and a spacebar that works 30-50% of the time isn't going to cut it; school papers with words mashed together that requires doubleand triple-checking to correct is a deal breaker. I don't have the time and I have plenty of things that frustrate me in life, a keyboard doesn't have to be (and will not be) one of them.

Sorry, Asus I love your motherboards and video cards, but your laptop really, really let me down. I searched around and this is a pretty common problem with keyboards on Asus laptops, so I will unfortunately be going with a competitor's product.

If you plan on using this more like a desktop connected to an external keyboard and mouse and only need occasional portability, then it's a fantastic deal. But if you're an accomplished typist and need to rely on a keyboard that has a spacebar that works, I suggest you go elsewhere.

I normally build my own PC's, but this one is a true Gem! I have ran it through the wringer, and it has NOT ever let me down! I do alot of graphics-intensive work, mainly 3-D animations, and this little powerhouse never even burps, it handles everything I throw at it.

I also LOVE the Finger Print Identity, I never have to keep a log of my passwords (which potientally could be hacked), just swipe my finger and TA-DA!, I can log into any pass protected program, web page, account, etc. without having to remember all the login & passwords (and I have quite a few!). It also gives me peace of mind if I'm out in the public, I can "lock" my laptop, and nobody can gain access to the machine, making it VERY secure.

Speed, reliable, and very sleek....

By the way, I did not realize this until just recently, but the CD/DVD burner is capable of burning Dual Layer Disc's, which is awesome and rare to find, comes in very handy for backing up the whole laptop, or making backups of ALL my PC's (or burning backup copies of my XBOX game disc's) on just one dual layer DVD !!

I also love the fact it has a complete compliment of I/O ports; at least one (if not several) for everything from USB to HDMI. It is very thoughtfully laid out, and you can tell that Dell uses only quality components to build thier machines.

All said, I am very pleased with the speed and performance of this Studio series laptop from Dell.

Sony VAIO VPC-S135FX/S Intel Core i5-480M processor 13.3-Inch LED - Silver

Sony VAIO VPC-S135FX/S Intel Core i5-480M processor 13.3-Inch LED - SilverA bought this laptop over 6months ago, and i have been using it consistently, this is not my first laptop, but it is the best i have ever bought so far.

Pros:

Slim and light, hence easy to carry around.

Battery life very good, more than 4hrs when in a good climate (be careful if you gonna use it in a hot climate, battery life could be just 2hrs).

Automatically activated lowlight condition for keyboard, this makes it good to use in the dark, the backlight only comes up in the dark when the keyboard is pressed.

Hard disk size is big enough for any multimedia data.

Cons:

The only issue found so far is the memory, though i have not proved this much, but I noticed atimes when the HDMI port is being used and a movie is played at the same time, there are atimes some delay. Hence, am trying to increase the system memory from present 4gb to 8gb. But so far, this is a very good laptop.

. I have used this amazingly capable computer for many applications and communication under many conditions driving across this country several times both indoors and outdoors wired and wireless with bluetooth, skype and android apps. With Intel-i5, Windows-7, and a back lit keyboard after 20 months, it has proven to be a very dependable portable asset to my personal and business needs. I have added a Nushield screen protector, a hygienic keyboard skin from Abeststore.com, and a Microsoft Explorer Blue Track mouse. Tiny Built in speakers are quite weak, some lower case heat buildup, and the battery life is fair to good depending on use and settings, none the less I rate this 13.3-inch laptop very good to excellent .
