HP G71-340US 17.3-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

HP G71-340US 17.3-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of Battery LifeThis is a great laptop for the money and I would buy it again.

Pro's:

Light compared to some other laptops (LED vs. LCD screens usually)

Screen is very bright and easy to read

HDMI allows output to HDTV (also for using Media Center on the HDTV)

4GB RAM

Good battery life (it was running for 3.5+ hours the other day)

10-Key number pad

5-1 card reader (for plopping in an SD card from a digital camera/camcorder)

Con's:

Fingerprints are highly visible on laptop cover -glossy black

Keyboard layout is cramped with certain keys (arrow keys, delete key)

Speakers do not sound as good as my 3 year old Toshiba laptop

No physical button for volume control -it's software controlled via keyboard/Windows.

Addt'l comments:

I also have a Lenovo T61p and the HP is lighter, has better battery life, and a softer keyboard (which I prefer-the Lenovo/Thinkpad line is too stiff for me). The Lenovo performs slightly better in every day tasks (faster hard drive & cpu) and a fair bit faster in graphics intensive applications (e.g. games).

I bought this to replace an older 15.6 inch laptop to be my main home computer. I just could not see investing half or more of the cost of this in a netbook. Boy am I glad I did. The 17.3 inch screen is simply incredible.

These are the ways the 17.3 inch screen helps. First the screen itself is really nice. My photos look fantastic and DVDs look superb. Netflix streaming and Hulu are so-so but that is more the limitations of software than of the screen itself. Many websites take advantage of the larger screen as well and it just feels right. It feels like my work desktop screen. Second and possibly of more value is the keyboard. BY FAR the best laptop keyboard I have ever used. It is even better than my stand alone keyboard at work. Finally a true full size, large key, awesome to type with laptop keyboard. And what I thought was a bad design aesthetically, the large blank space beneath the keyboard with just the mouse controls. Guess what? It is perfect for laying your hands down as you type. I know keyboard is not the first thing that comes to mind when buying a computer and it probably shouldn't be the first thing. BUT it should not be under-rated either.

As for the computer itself. I am really digging Windows 7. I bought this on Black Friday and so far no problems whatsoever. 4 GB is nice. The 6600 processors are nice solid performers. There are better in laptops but for me doing multimedia activities and home office activities this computer more than meets my needs. Everything worked great right out of the box. Webcam works great and not too much installed software. The student and home Office trial means if you end up buying it (Amazon usually has the best price around) it is already installed you just need the key. That was kind of nice. The 60 days of Norton gives you some time to try it, be protected, and make a decision on the security software you like so that is also helpful.

But ultimately what should make you choose this over the numerous other configurations HP offers is the screen size. Any slight added bulkiness and weight (around 6.5 odd pounds) is more than made up for me with how much fun it is to have a large laptop screen and a real full-sized comfortable, fantastic keyboard. Let others have their 10 inch products...17.3 for me from now on.

UPDATE as of 7/4/2010 I have just recently switched over to Mac so anything PC is truly inferior in so many ways. But as Windows laptop, this is a darn good machine for the money.

How can I express how incredible this machine is? Well let me try. Two weeks earlier I bought the Vista cousin of this machine that had a Pentium and only 1400/900 display (blech!) and it was a bit sluggish. After I saw an Office Depot flyer advertising this beauty for with rebate, I returned the Pentium to Best Buy, who didn't have this machine. This machine is a tremendous value. Huge hard drive, 4 gigs of ram, WONDERFUL keyboard (all the HPs have the best-engineered keyboards I have seen on any laptops, large and small). And 1600x900 instead of 1400x900 like some of the other models. I agree that the power cable should be on the left side, in fact on the one I returned it was. And yes, the speakers are underwhelming. But this is no "gaming rig", this is a business desktop replacement, period. Battery life? It says up to 4 hours by I get between 2.5 and 3 hours, and with the powersave mode, just a bit over 3 hours. The lesser cousin didn't even get 1.5 hours.

Do not pass go, do not collect (although you will collect in rebates), just buy this machine!

I'm a Mac guy normally, but my mother is PC all the way. I got this computer for her as a gift, and spent a few hours setting it up for her. Paid $650 for this before tax at Sam's Club. It's worth it. You get what you pay for. Windows 7 is impressive. I suppose W7 is Microsoft's answer to Mac OSX. They have done a great job at making all of Windows more aesthetically pleasing. It is simple and functional, and seems to run smoothly. Of course, my experience with Windows is that you can't really judge how quick it is for at least 6 months, so who knows. The processor and memory on this computer are a great value for what you pay... kudos on that.

My problem with this computer, first of all, is that it doesn't have built-in Bluetooth... I guess I was thinking that BT was sort-of standard already on notebook computers nowadays. Makes it a little inconvenient for someone like me that prefers to do everything wirelessly. Another issue I have with this notebook is that it is VERY bulky and VERY heavy. I appreciate the large widescreen, and the full numeric keypad, but the moment I opened the box I was deflated by the sheer size of this monstrosity. It is not something that a normal-sized person can comfortably fit on their lap (OMG I could not imagine trying to use this thing on an airplane). It is so large that the first two notebook bags I bought my mother would not accommodate it. The placement of buttons and control keys on the unit itself, for some reason, also seems a little confusing to me... lacking intuitiveness... but that may just be me.

This computer, despite its problems, did impress me overall. It's a cut above the expectations I had for a $650 PC laptop. I am looking to purchase an actual Windows PC to use in addition to my two Macs... I would consider HP based on my experience with this notebook, but I would not consider THIS MODEL. I travel several months out of the year... and honestly this thing is just too bulky and heavy to comfortably carry through airports. I would suggest to seriously consider the size and weight of this computer before purchasing it, and weigh the cons of those things against your intentions for this computer... if you travel a lot with your notebook, I doubt this model will make you happy camper. But if you want a portable home computer, or something to keep in your dorm... something that won't be moving around a lot... this might be a good option.

Impressive, very impressive... but not enough to turn this old Mac guru into a PC-All-The-Way guy. :)

It's better than my G70 but not by much. The 16:9 screen is much shorter than the G70 widescreen, making it harder to read pages online-lots of scrolling. My biggest complaint is the volume. I went into every possible menu to max the vol and nothing helped. The G70 blasts it out of the water on sound. The DVD tray is very flimsy, it wouldn't burn a DVD-I tried several brands and types. It tried-burned maybe half a disc and wasted 10 discs. I was trying to burn their recommended recovery disc set off this notebook. I gave up and paid the $14 for the DVDs. The tray is moulded close to the bottom and hangs if you don't keep it near the edge of your desk or raised on that end. The power adpt cord sticks straight out the rear side and would be easy to mangle if you're not careful moving it. I'm returning it because Win7 won't work with any of my HP printers and scanners and they state on their website that they aren't going to write new drivers. These notebooks are identical in quality and appearance. The G71 is ,1 Ghz faster and 1 GB more memory plus .3 larger screen. Not a huge difference by any means. I did exhaust tech support on the hardware issue and he recommended I buy new printers and scanners. NOT I'll stick with Vista untill they write more drivers, maybe they'll have one of mine in a few ..... For the money it's a good machine but you better have Win7 approved hardware. Most of the drivers out now for Win7 are stripped of their features and use only basic functions. I wouldn't abandon Vista just yet.

Been a great laptop so far! The only complaint my husband and I have is where the power button is! One of the kids will accidently bump it and the thing shuts down! SO very touchy! The cd door seems to pop open very easy too. Otherwise this computer has worked real great for us!

It spent March in the shop for repairs, they say it had a bad hard drive.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE11113FXW 11.6-Inch Laptop (Seafoam White)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE11113FXW 11.6-Inch Laptop**Initial Ruminations**

I only had a few, meagre requirements when purchasing a new laptop/netbook...

It must be:

1) Compact and lightweight

2) Excellent battery life

3) Powerful enough for photo/graphic editing, and programming IDE's

4) Low cost

The line between netbooks and laptops is quite blurred these days. The only real difference between a netbook and a laptop is usually if it has an optical media device (such as a DVD burner/drive). I never use optical media these days so that is not an issue for me.

This net/lap/ultra book blurs the line completely; call it what you like. I would consider it to be a laptop since it has 4 gigs of ram (upgradeable to 8). Maybe it is really a lower end ultrabook.

Regardless, there are not too many laptops/netbooks that fit my needs as specified above! In order to get a small, powerful laptop you generally have to pay out the wazoo for an ultrabook. Not any more, the Sony Vaio E2-1800 fits the bill perfectly!

**Stock Windows Benchmark**

I took a snip of the Windows Experience Index:Most bloatware was disabled when I ran this. I am currently trying to unlock the BIOS which could help the processor speed if I can overclock it a bit. I would like to upgrade to 8 gigs of RAM but it will probably be bottle necked by the CPU.

I should mention I have the Canadian version of this it is for all intents and purposes identical but it has a slightly larger battery (for up to 7.5 hours of use) and larger hard drive.

**Real-life Usage/Features**

I can run jdownloader, browse the web with many tabs open, run photoshop, watch a movie with no lag at all.

**Look and Feel**

The tactile feel of the keyboard soft and quiet, feels well built overall.

Another plus is the "gesture" touch pad... I don't need to use the touchpad mouse buttons at all.

The white colour is a glossy, sparkly white on the outside. The screen bezel is glossy black. The screen is glossy. The keyboard, touch pad and keys are silvery white with chrome accents. The sides and bottom are black.

**Integrated Peripherals**

The webcam seems to be a generic quality laptop cam, but with HD resolutions. With the bundled software the picture rez goes to 2560x2048 and has a digital zoom. The video goes to 1280 x 1024.

It's got a bunch of software features for the webcam including the "Gesture Control": if you use Media Gallery you can wave your hand in the air to change songs, pause adjust volume and what not, kind of like a remote. This works poorly in the dark even when your hand is visible. Seems mostly gimmicky but it's kind of a neat idea. It also comes bundled with lots of (optional) cloud software to organize your media, and the camera has various "face-tracking" abilities (Sony calls it an "Exmor Sensor" camera) along with plenty of ways to use this (ie. making an avatar move with your facial movements). I don't know if these features are common to most webcams, as I don't know much about them. The actual picture in low-light mode is quite good compared to my past laptops.

**Speaker Quality**

For a netbook / laptop the sound is what you would expect, no bass, however it goes much louder than other laptops I have had. Quote from Sony "xLoud technology enhances speaker volume without sacrificing quality.". I am sure if you left it cranked up it would affect the battery life quite a bit. It's nice to have the option of loud sound though, in case you want to watch a movie or stream music for friends.

**Conclusion**

This little 'book packs a punch in a small package. It may be even better if I can unlock the BIOS and give it more juice. However, even at stock it is a light weight solution, packs a bit of oomph without sacrificing battery life, so if this is what you are looking for don't hesitate to try it out!

There's a lot to love about this little bugger.

First of all, it's light and small. It's just large enough to be comfortable to type on.

I'm a big fan of AMD, a company local to me where several of friends work, but I admit their chips are not at quite at level Intel's are for raw performance. This is not the most powerful laptop, but it is snappy for web surfing and decodes h.264 basically instantly. For Netflix, web surfing, document editing, and other every day uses, this laptop is up to the task.

For games, I found the framerates surprisingly pretty good for Dead Space, but it struggled with La Noire. Skyrim on medium settings was playable.

Battery life is excellent. It's been on for five hours now.

Keyboards are a matter of personal taste. I prefer the old Thinkpad keyboards, but this island style is more attractive and has a nice feel. I can type around 80% as fast on this laptop as I can on my desktop.

There isn't too much bloatware installed... Sony is better about this than most, but I removed the Office trial, Kapersky, and Windows "Essentials". It didn't make much difference in performance.

The screen is small but gorgeous; the fit and finish is as good as any laptop I've ever had. I glanced at how to disassemble it and it plainly would be an enormous pain, like most laptops these days.

There is no optical drive. No blu ray, no DVD, no CD. If you have access to a computer with such a drive, you can easily make isos and mount them for use on this computer, but I download everything these days. I think a laptop is better without the extra parts.

I strongly advise replacing the hard drive in this laptop with an SSD. The boot times and program loading with this setup are incredibly fast. This makes a bigger difference to most users than a more powerful processor would.

This is an outstanding laptop at a reasonable price. I paired it with Case Logic QNS-111 11.6-Inch EVA Molded Netbook Sleeve (Black), which fits the laptop well and provides a lot of protection.

I am really satisfied with this purchase.

First of all, shipping was very quick are accurate.(MA)

Secondly, the design and performance of it are pretty reasonable considering the price at less than $500.

Of course, even though the CPU from AMD is less powerful than those of Inter, it is still enough to enjoy it as a second laptop or

just for academic or casual purposes.

Lastly, but significantly, its design is very good. In my opinion, nowadays there are not many adorable designs for laptops

I like the portability of this PC and a great screen resolution but the battery don't last as I expect( only in standby: can stay on for about 24 hours) The worst problem I have with it is the insensitivity of the mouse pad: I rather using a optional mini mouse to avoid this problem. I s a little bit sluggish but I guess is normal for the size of the laptop despite it brag of 1.7 gigahertz of speed. Overall is OK for me since I use it only when I'm out in school. I decided sacrifice a little bit of performance for portability since it is very light.

HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx Entertainment Laptop - Intel Core i5-460M Processor/ 6GB DDR3 Memory/ 640GB Hard DriveTop notch value. The i5 processor is a big plus and a noticeable difference from my last PC. The computing experience is elevated using this machine. The aluminum finish gives this a nice clean cut look. The battery life is 3.5 hrs which is excellent considering the power of the machine. The beats audio sound system is a pleasant touch when viewing multimedia. Also for those who are tired with all the "log-ins" online the fingerprint reader is a great bonus that can automatically sign you in with one swipe of the finger. With all the features, this laptop can go toe to toe with any other 17" laptop on the market and is drastically cheaper.

I got this laptop and after haveing an Acer for so long this laptop really makes you relize what quality and performance HP gives in thier PC's.It has a fingerprint reader which is so nifty cause I just scan my finger to log on to any website or enter my computer super security. This laptop is wi-max ready which is helpfull for anyone who needs long distance internet. The Silver titianium shell is durable and pretty. This is the nicest laptop anyone can get for the price; Also consumer report's gives HP laptops Dv7 modle notebooks 74 out of 100.

I love the Beats Audio System it sounds super.

I have had this computer for 4 months now and I love it. For one thing, I love the exterior design. Be forewarned however, if you have you laptop in your room like I do and you don't turn in off every night, the HP symbol on the back glows... VERY bright, I have to set something on top of it to block out the light so I can sleep (I haven't checked, but there might be a setting to turn it off).

When you lift the lid of the laptop, you have a very neat and tidy layout. The screen is huge, so there is enough room on the keyboard to have a numlocks pad. I also like the mouse pad. You can use two fingers to scroll and you can also zoom in and out on any screen (I just tested this on the desktop too, and it changes the size of your desktop icons when you do that). On my older laptop, the finger pad, left and right buttons were all separate, but on this HP it is all on one pad, so that took some getting used to for me.

I also like having the finger scanner. I use it to log on to the computer quickly no more typing in user passwords. You can also use it to log on to other websites, such as skype, wellsfargo, hotmail, gmail, facebook, etc. HOWEVER!!!!!: DON'T EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO USE THIS FEATURE IF YOU ARE A GOOGLE CHROME USER!!! I hear it works on internet explorer and firefox, but as of YET, it is not compatible with google chrome. Personally, I can live without the finger scanner to log in to various sites until chrome gets this worked out I have no intention of switching to another browser.

The Webcam is FANTASTIC! I love it. Very high quality. It even has some fun features that come with it; faces, hats, drawing. It's cute. The microphone is also amazing. It will even pick up a very quiet whisper.

The graphics are beautiful, and the colors are very vivid. I am not a huge computer gamer, I just play Halo and Guild Wars and a lot of minigames on bored.com, but everything looks great while I play.

The speakers are good. I think the associate at Best Buy was right when he said that in order to use the Beats Audio to its full potential, you would have to get some external speakers or listen through headphones. But when I'm walking around the house, the speakers are good enough on their own.

USB plugs are on the side, not on the back. I like it when they are on the backside of the computer, because whatever you are plugging into the computer would be out of the way, but that's not possible with this computer because of the battery. It also only has 3 USB plugs.

The computer itself is also quite quiet. As I sit here now, even with multiple programs running and without the computer even being plugged in, it is very quiet just the faintest whisper of a fan.

And the battery life is long. Probably about 7 hours. I usually leave it unplugged on the kitchen table and it will last for about a week without it needing to be plugged in so long as I use the battery saving preference and close the lid when I'm done with it.

Before I decided to get this computer, I read the good and bad reviews from multiple sites. From my experience, it seems that people who wrote the bad reviews probably had a defective machine which is a risk with anything you buy, whether you're buying a laptop or xbox or a washing machine.

All in all, I love my computer. And this computer has turned me into a HP FanGirl. After this computer I got a HP External Harddrive, mouse, and my bf and I just bought a new HP Printer yesterday.

Acer Extensa 5420-5038 Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 1.9GHz 2GB 120GB DVD±RW DL 15.4" Vista Home Premium w/We

Acer Extensa 5420-5038 Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 1.9GHz 2GB 120GB DVD±RW DL 15.4' Vista Home Premium w/WebcamCompared to macbook pro

Pros:

1) AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual-Core Processor TK-57 is fast with supporting architecture.

2) Streamed CBS s' 60 minutes off the internet seamlessly and in equivalent time.

3) Wireless connectivity with 802.11 b/g WLAN is adequate compared to draft n.

4) Windows Vista which came installed is very usable.

5) Laptop mouse is very stable, sensitive and sleek.

(Good redundancy features)

6) Given that the reliability of the processor is good (years out), this computer is robustly upgradable in the future:

PCMCI and Express Card slots can be used in future for Flash memory upgrade three years out from purchase date

(December 2008) to complement dwindling hard drive space.

7) Equipped with 4 USB hubs, if one hub breaks there are three more in operation.

8) Connectivity from virtually anywhere (If wireless LAN not available, an ethernet hub is built in; if ethernet not available, a modem hub connection is built in)

9) Screen picture quality has brillant, vivid colors.

10) Keyboard has a nice natural curve for typing so hands do not get tired.

11) Computer barely gets warm -cooling fan is vey good.

12) 1/4 the price ($ 500) of mac book pro ($ 2000) and similar functionality except for battery and included hard disk space.

13) Warranty from radioshack and acer combined is 2 years compared to 1 year from apple.

14) Acers online support for drivers and downloads is very transparent, acers documentation and manuals for older and current models is better than apples, phone service is good but needs improvement, (we have an apple G5 1.8 GHz which is quite good, apples technical phone support is also good but apples store genius personal support is inadequate and very limited with respect to battery replacement or hardware fixes).

Cons:

1) Battery life wirelessly is about 2 hours; battery life is 2.5 hours with wireless off (battery is upgradable from 6 cell to 8 cell however). So battery life will increase to 3 h 36 min ( 2h 57 min) but compared to the the macbook pro and acer timeline series currently (11/2009) with > 6 hours, the battery life could be better but this would consume spatial volume within the computer that I see can be better utlilized in the future for Flash (solid State memory upgrades) in the PCMCIA and Express card slots without having to carry around a portable drive (that may be faster for retrieval) but cumbersome to carry.

2) Hard disk drive included is 120 GB which is ok but not as good as 250 or 320 GB.

3) No bluetooth included but installation of a wired internal bluetooth chip is quite doable for $20 off ebay or using one of the 4 USB hubs is also doable for the same cost.

I really do not see why a CD drive is constantly being included in this and future laptops as it just takes up potential valuable hard drive space, Flash memory space or Battery space. I anticipate flash memory will eventually displace CD infrastructure when it becomes more affordable for software and movie vendors.

Considering purchase of acer timeline 15.6" in addition for newspaper browsing family member just for the extra battery life per charge. However I look to my acer extensa 5420-5038 more as a long term investment for the AMD processor life span and for the acer extensa 5420-5038 to be more expandable and upgradable in terms of memory --we will see, but so far so good.

Update as of Oct 22, 2012 (3 years and 10 months later) -I originally gave this computer four stars to be conservative after owning the computer for 11 months. After having owned this computer for 3 years and 10 months, this computer has been reliable and functions very well with the vista operating system. If you want a workhorse computer that is reliable, then the acer extensa 5420-5038 computer is a good investment.

I purchased this laptop in 2008 in preparation for college. While it has lasted me for while I am less than impressed with it. Here are a few things that I've noticed.

1. The video card is AWFUL. Mine came with an ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 video card, which is barely enough to run games that came out when I bought the computer (at minimal settings) and not nearly enough to run anything new. (It lags on Portal, if that's any indication of just how bad the card is). Not only that, but ATI long since stopped updating the drivers for it, probably about a year after I got. So if you're looking for support or software upgrades for the video card, you're SOL.

2. The battery lasted about 2 and a half hours on low-power settings when I bought it. It now lasts about 2 and a half minutes on battery (Though thankfully will stay on standby overnight on the battery. I'll soon be buying a new battery so I can actually be portable again.

3. Build Quality. Again, about a year after I got it, the headphone jack failed. Now I'm a musician, so I use the headphone jack almost every day, so maybe this is just wear and tear, but it is now to the point where I have to use a PCMCIA audio card in order to listen to anything. The case itself is not very durable as well. The bottom left area where my left hand rests is coming apart at the seam (literally, you can lift the plastic up and see the inside). But most annoying of all is the screen. Acer must have not thought this part out very well, because about 6 months ago the left hinge for the screen BROKE THROUGH the plastic surrounding the case after being perpetually cracked for about a year. I had to dismantle the screen, pull apart the hinge and remove the attachment entirely to be able to open and close the screen without casing further damage. The screen is now held up solely by the right hinge.

Cooling: On a hot day, the fan works just well enough to prevent overheating...for about 20 minutes. Then it will shut off and you get to spend another 20 waiting for it to cool down. I now have it on a cooling pad and it still gets hot after extended running periods (2-3 hours).

Oh, and I'm down to 1.75 GB of RAM. Down from the original 2GB (Though I doubt there was every that much to begin with).

The keyboard is quite fragile. I've just ordered another for it as my backspace, o and \ keys have broken off simply from use.

Honestly, I'd look elsewhere.

Buy Acer Extensa 5420-5038 Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 1.9GHz 2GB 120GB DVD±RW DL 15.4" Vista Home Premium w/We Now

I didn't buy this laptop, and I'm not the original owner. I ended up with this machine by trading a friend my beloved Asus EEEPC 1015PE netbook for it. As much as I loved my netbook for its amazing battery life, small footprint and extreme portability, it's single core Atom processor lacked the necessary power to meet many of my requirements. I am a full time student and I am taking several programming classes, and running IDEs like Eclipse would put the computer through it's paces, but when it came time to compile the anemic 1.67GHz single core would be brought to it's knees from the punishment. Long compile times and periodic crashes while doing so make netbooks a less than prime candidate for CIS students.

Now about this Acer laptop.

First off, I'd like to say that I am not a fan of AMD products (CPUs or graphics cards), particularly in mobile computers because of their typically poor power management, lower performance to clock speed ratio and excessive heat as compared to similarly clocked Intel processors. This laptop is no exception to the rule. The bottom will get uncomfortably warm if sat on anything but a flat level surface like a table.

Second, I think it's kind of cheesy that Acer included the hard switch for Blutooth on the case to this computer but did not actually include a bluetooth module. Not that I use bluetooth particularly frequently on my computers, but it does have it's uses and cutting corners like that is inexcusable. At least have the decency to put a blank off plate on it or something

Third, the graphics card is a disappointment. I've owned laptops with ATI Radeon Xpress graphics before and was happy with their performance. But the Radeon Xpress X1250 barely performs at the level that Intel's integrated graphics chips like the GMA3150 in my netbook did. In some cases, performance lags somewhat behind Intel's. For example on Linux. The last version of Ubuntu to actually support this graphics card using the official ATI drivers was Ubuntu 8.04 which has LONG SINCE been retired, even as a Long Term Support release. ATI can't be bothered to update their drivers for products that are more than about 2 years old apparently, and they relegate everything else to "Legacy" status and eventually drop support entirely. Running Ubuntu 12.04 leaves much to be desired since the only drivers available are the open source reverse engineered "Radeon" xorg modules. If you enjoy using the advanced effects from Compiz like the desktop cube then this card is going to be a disappointment.

However, on Windows the card seems to perform decently well. I wouldn't even attempt to play any games but it will at least enable Aero effects, which seems to be the only function this card provides. It can't handle HD video and struggles with any flash content.

Battery life is not great. I get roughly 2 hours on a full charge depending on what I'm doing. Considerably less if I'm compiling code, which I frequently am. This isn't so much a concern for me though because I typically have access to power at school. It is a pain sometimes having to play contortionist in order to get at the obscure power strip attached underneath the desk.

The laptop's size and weight are a consideration. While it is nice having more screen real estate, this laptop is particularly heavy even for computers of the same size. Coming from a netbook and bicycling several miles to and from school, this is a bit of a drawback for me.

The pros of this laptop are certainly considerable though!

First off, the curved keyboard feels very natural and easy to type on, which is very important for programming. So the computer scores some points there.

Second, the track pad is smooth and responsive. It has some nice Synaptics multitouch features that can be enabled after installing the driver for it from Acer's website. Also, the trackpad is large enough to be easy to use (a considerable improvement over the tiny jittery track pad on my old netbook) but it's not so large that it gets in the way and accidentally gets bumped by your wrists which was a constant annoyance using my netbook.

Third, although the AMD CPU does tend to put out a bit more heat than I'd like, the dual core 1.9GHz Turion64X2 processor does provide a plenty of power for accomplishing tasks and can run multiple programs without any problems.

Fourth, the screen is bright and crisp and easy to read. It would be nice if it supported 1440x960 resolution but 1280x800 is a substantial increase over 1024x600 on my netbook.

Fifth, although certainly not surprising compared to other computers, the inclusion of a DVD-RW drive is a very welcome addition coming from a netbook without an optical drive of any kind.

Sixth, the construction of this laptop is fairly substantial. Actually, it's built like a tank. A big heavy clunky tank. But it is solid and seems pretty durable. Not that I'd want to test it out, but I'm pretty sure it would be fine even if it got knocked around a bit. My netbook on the other hand was one swan dive off the coffee table away from the dumpster.

So in conclusion, I'd like to say that I'd never willingly pay money for this computer but considering the fact that I didn't pay anything for it, it is a welcome upgrade from a netbook in most ways. It provides me with the additional CPU power I needed to be able to use it for school.

This is a great laptop. It runs fast with over 60 firefox tabs open. The only complaint I have about this is the touchpad mouse isn't very accurate. It will click on things when you haven't actually clicked (clicking can be done by tapping the touchpad twice as well as the left click button, but if you lift your finger to move the touchpad farther to one side, then it sometimes interprets that as a click). Other times the mouse pointer will change position across the screen without you moving your finger. I don't know if that's an overall problem, or just a problem with mine, but if you can deal with the mouse, it's a great laptop.

I've had this laptop for almost a year now and I love it! I saw a few iffy reviews at first but every electronic is a risk there's always a possiblity for disappointment. A few times at the beginning whenever I watched tv shows online the computer froze up and I was forced to reboot. But the acer settings allow you to change the power settings and if you change it to high performance it runs smoothly. I use it daily and I haven't experienced any of the "vista problems" and tell that to anyone that reminds me of them. I'm actually on my laptop right now. It's definitely worth the money whatever price you pay for it!

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 - 418536U notebook - Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1GHz 3MB),Ge

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 - 418536U notebook - Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor P8600,Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium, 16.0 ' TFT Wide Screen LED 1366x768, 3 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM, 320 gb sata hd, DVD Recordable, Intel Integrated Graphics X4500First of all, I got mine for $ plus shipping. Second, mine has 4 GB RAM and a 2.53 GHz processor. These specs may be different than the unit you're considering.

PROS: Slim, responsive, speakers sound great, display looks great for watching movies, love the HUGE hard disk, push button volume and mute

CONS: Kind of bulky (but what can you expect from a 16" display?), keyboard quite small especially for the amount of space available, only two USB ports (at least they're on opposite sides), obnoxious low-battery warning that can only be turned off if ALL sound is turned off, hard drive not as big as advertised, display doesn't have a very wide viewing angle especially for dark colors, would have preferred a larger battery option, even with most exotic feature disabled the mousepad seems to do things I don't expect, hard disk not really as big as advertised (see below)

THOUGHTS: I know my con list is bigger than my pro list, but don't let that fool you I'm just picky. I had to buy a new laptop because my 2-year-old Toshiba (which I never really liked) was going off to blue-screen-of-death world far too often. This seems to be a solid, if not spectacular, model, especially if you can get it for as low a price as I did. It lasts about 2.5 hours on battery, assuming you're not using the DVD drive or watching video. I've read complaints about the display not being that great for gaming, but that's not what I'm using it for.

About the hard drive, it's advertised as 320 GB, but it really only has about 250 GB of usable space. The hard drive is partitioned into a 252 GB C: drive and a 30 GB D: drive. (Supposedly there's another hidden "service" partition using about 15 GB.) You have to keep everything partitioned this way if you want one key recovery to work. That means you lose about 20% of your hard drive for a feature you'll probably never use.

FINALLY: Please, please, please, please, please stop pre-installying so much crap ware. And I almost forgot WINDOWS VISTA SUCKS! (It reminds me of a description I read about AOL years ago: I'm mad as hell and I AM going to take it some more!) But at least my "free" ($15+ for handling from Lenovo) upgrade to Windows 7 is coming.

Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)

Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch LaptopThe Macbook Pro has just been updated on April 13th 2010. There are some upgrades and a few changes between this year and last years model, detailed below.

UPGRADES

1) The MBP 13 now has 4 gb of ram standard (2 x 2 gb sticks). This allows you to multi-task easily without any issues ( last years model had only 2gb of ram which was inadequate) Now there's no need to spend more money upgrading your ram UNLESS you're really into heavy duty multimedia work

2) It also features the Nvidia GeForce 320M integrated graphics processor with 48 processing cores. This is an improvement compared to the Geforce 9400M graphics chip in last years model and will help in graphics and content creation.

3) The included hard drive is 250 gb (160gb in last years model).

4) Mini display port now supports video AND sound with a compatible Mini-DP to HDMI adapter (last years model only supported video)

STANDARD FEATURES from last years 13 inch model (minor changes noted in brackets) are

An Aluminum unibody,

Core 2 Duo Processor ( 2.4 ghz up from 2.26ghz ),

1280 x 800 resolution Glossy LED backlit screen,

iSight camera,

8x slot-loading SuperDrive dvd burner

Large glass multi-touch trackpad ( Intertial scrolling is now enabled ),

Backlit keyboard with comfortable chiclet keys

Magsafe power adapter (with redesigned tip to reduce stress on the cable)

1 Firewire 800 port,

2 USB 2.0 ports ,

SD Card slot,

Wi-Fi 802.11n specification; 802.11a/b/g compatible, Bluetooth 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet -10/100/1000.

Software included is OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the iLife 09 suite of content creation tools. A 1 year warranty on parts and 90 day telephone technical support is standard.

The lack of the latest Intel Core i5 or i3 processors processors in this machine is disappointing ( Anybody paying $1200 for a notebook positioned as a pro product, would expect new rather than "old" processors to be part of the configuration ) but I'd still recommended the MBP 13 to people looking to buy the lightest and most portable Macbook Pro as well as a capable machine in it's own right. Demanding applications like Skype, Photoshop, Lightroom, iMovie run smoothly.

I would also consider purchasing applecare AppleCare Protection Plan MC258LL/A For Portable Apple Computers 13.3 Inches and Below along with the notebook.

The truth is, Apple uses most of the same parts (hard drives, processors, dvd drives, wireless cards) that other laptop manufacturers use so their reliability is no worse or better than other laptop manufacturers. Unfortunately what most customers don't know is that if a product / part malfunction occurs after the first year limited warranty has ended, Apple charges extremely high fees for repairing and replacing parts (when compared to other laptop manufacturers ) IF you don't have Applecare.

Keep in mind, the A.P.P. only covers hardware failure not accidental damage so it's still expensive for what you get but it's better than paying Apple's prices for repair/replacement parts.

Another warranty extension option to consider is Squaretrade (which also includes damage protection). It's better to pay once for Applecare or Squaretrade (whatever you prefer) and be covered for 2 more years after the first year is up than pay exorbitant repair/replacement fees if a part malfunctions.

About the battery, Apple advertises it as lasting for 9 to 10 hours of use. In reality, it allows you to be mobile for 3 to 6 hours depending on what task you're using the computer for. Also, it's an inbuilt battery so once it's exhausted, you will have to take your machine back to an Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for replacement. However, Apple states that the battery will hold 80% of it's charge for up to a 1000 charges which means approximately 3 to 4 years of daily use. So it should be a while before you have to go in for that battery replacement.

Also, Since the MBP has a mini display port, you'll have to buy a MiniDP to VGA convertor or MiniDP to DVI convertor if you ever want to connect your MB Pro to a larger monitor since Apple does not include it with the machine it will cost you $30 more IF you buy it from Apple. Here's a cheaper option Mini DisplayPort to DVI Female Adapter Cable for Apple Macbook, Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air, Mac Mini Laptop

For those who are confused about whether they should purchase the $1199 MBP 13 or the $1499 MBP 13 the only difference between this model and the higher priced model is processor speed and hard drive space the $1199 MBP 13 has a 2.4 ghz processor and 250 gb hard drive and the $1499 MBP 13 has a 2.66ghz processor and 320 gb hard drive. Whether a 266 mhz (10% difference) and 70 gb more of hard drive space is worth 300 dollars more is your call. (Although you can purchase a 500 gb notebook hard drive for approximately $80 and install it yourself. Instructions are in the MBP 13 manual and you'll need a Philips #00 screwdriver. Installation videos are also available online)

Hope this helps!

UPDATE The MBP has a good quality screen but I have to add that it may not be for everybody. Online reports on Apple's MB Pro support forums and personal experience indicate that the glossy LED screen causes tremendous eye strain and headaches for some people. A few users have said that they cannot use the computer for more than an hour at a time because of the eye strain and headaches.

Mine and other's issues with the screen are individual cases but the possibility does exist that the screen may not suit you and cause eye strain and other health issues. At the same time, you may not face any of these issues. My advice would be to use the MB Pro as a notebook extensively within the fourteen day return window and if you face any of these issues, do not hesitate to return it. If you do not face any of these issues, then please enjoy using your MB Pro.

This is my umpteenth Mac and as usual, it's a very satisfying purchase. Although the styling of this laptop, with the dark hinge and keyboard isn't quite my cup of tea (and is a matter of taste), this machine is far and away the most solidly built. It feels like it would stop a bullet, and it probably could. It's reassuring rigidity gives it a feeling of quality and sturdiness second to none. For someone who man handles his laptop all day every day, this is very important.

To be seen over the next months and years is if the reliability of the machine is as good as its build quality.

One final, off-topic note on delivery: Amazon service has been excellent. Yes, their systems are not perfect, but their customer service has made up for it. I originally got an inexplicable delivery date, but a call fixed that.

i just picked one of these up and I love it. I have read reviews complaining that Apple did not try to cram an i5 or larger CPU into this 13 inch machine. True, the chose to use the Core 2 Duo but that's not all bad. This is a stable, cool running, capable processor. The machine now includes 4 G of ram and a much improved video card from the previous version. I use this mostly for work where stability, battery life, portability, and longevity are the most important things to me. I rarely play games. I wouldn't use a portable for video work when I have a desktop available. I run office applications, safari, email, ever note, and skype. It all works great. The machine feels substantial in my hands. Pick it up and try to twist it. It is perfectly rigid. My Toshiba feels like the battery would fall out if I twisted a bit more. This one feels well built. I especially like the backlit keyboard.

I never write reviews. NEVER. But this is something that just has to be reviewed because everyone should have one of these. It's a little long but I feel that this has to be said. If I can't convince you, go to the store and mess around with one if you'd like. Better yet, read all the reviews. They all can't be wrong.

I've been a windows user for all my life. The experience has been great all the way through XP. With all the negativity surrounding Vista, I decided not to persue it. I've had relatively little problems with windows honestly except dealing with all the problems I deal with on a daily basis (Help Desk Tech). If there's anything that I feel like touching least when I come home, it was my XP machine.

Why did I go Mac? I've seen the hundreds of things that can go wrong with Windows. I've heard all the complaints about Vista. Haven't played much with 7 but just messing around with it @ Best Buy I thought, "Yea maybe it's better than Vista but it's pretty much the SAME OLD WINDOWS when it comes down to it." I'm deploying soon and I had a 17" Dell Inspirion 1705 Windows XP machine (See how long that is? I am happy to say that when someone asks me what I'm rollin with, I reply, "13-inch MacBook Pro" A lot shorter but that's besides the point). Anyways, the screen is HUGE and there was no way I'm taking that tank with me over there. WAY to heavy and WAY to bulky! So I was in the market for a Laptop that was at most 14". When it comes to electronics, I research a ton.

What was the first thing I typed up when I was looking for a new PC?

"What is the best brand of laptops (Windows)?"

Yea that didn't help any. I got "HP is the best!" Then I got "HP is the worse!" So it was a lot of mixed reviews for mostly all of them. So I thought that I'd venture into Mac since I've never owned one. Went to the site and it gave me 2 options: Macbook and Macbook Pro. I opted for the Macbook Pro because 1) I wanted 4GB of RAM (I read it just works better all around) and 2) I wanted an SD slot. There are other reasons why Macbook Pro is nicer but I'll get into that later.

What was my only doubt before buying Mac? What if I need Office? Well there's bootcamp. I'll tell you what, so far I've had no use for Windows yet (waiting to see how Office for Mac 2011 is before I decide). So I did it and let me tell you, I've never had more fun messing with a computer than I've had with my Mac. Ok enough ranting, what do I like? What don't I like?

Pros:

+Great designA reason to get Macbook Pro over Macbook: the construction. All PCs=Plastic

+OS is so easyNavigating through my files couldn't be easier. No more "Well that file is in c:\windows\localprofile\temp\settings\...ETC" It's all simple to find (It also helps using Spotlight)

+Dashboard and ExposeWidgets + Easy way to find what you have open = FUN

+iLifeBottom like, iPhoto and iMovie BLOW AWAY windows standard photoviewer and windows movie maker (garbage, cheap)

+ The touchpadIt's more than just being big, it's amazing. The gestures make the experience so much easier and fun. Want to scroll down? Place to fingers on the pad and swipe down. There are others but hard to explain ;)

+ It's just flat out fun to useWindows just started getting dull for me. Mac is fresh and exciting. When you buy a car do you want to get a transportation (PC) or do you want to get something that you enjoy driving (MAC)? I enjoy driving Mac everyday.

Cons:

Adjusting: It's difficult adjusting using windows all my life. But apple has set up many videos online to help you along. Thanks!

The little things I was used to: again goes back to adjusting to a new OS. Alt+F4 is now Command+W. Gotta get used to it. No biggie.

Honestly, maybe I'm being biased (sue me) but I can't find a lot of cons yet as I'm still very new to this.

Bottom Line: You want a mac. Start a new adventure in your life. It's not too late. Mac will make your life easier in ways you couldn't imagine.

And hey, you might just have a little fun while you're at it ;)

This is my fourth Mac and they keep getting better.I had some reservations about the glossy screen and even though it does reflect it works and works very well.I loved the matte screen but this has taken little time to accept and get used to.

Now,the track pad and this is impressive in that it is not a gimmick and eliminates so much clicking and dragging and fishing around for back buttons and the like. And all done with subtle gestures on the good sized trackpad.Be sure to activate the tap to click function so you can use this subtle method to click or secondary click or drag with one finger. No need to go up for a back button to go back page-just swipe three fingers.Desktop and expose can be activated by vertical swipes, etc. It even has a lighted keyboard for a poor typer like myself.

The case is of course milled from a solid piece of aluminum and along with the Mac OS this is a thing of beauty.Apple is to computers what Leica is to cameras so even though I never got that Leica I do have this Macbook Pro in my hand right now.Treat yourself if you can.

This review is from: Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Brown IMR) (Personal Computers)

Got the computer in a timely mannor, thanks Amazon. Got it up and running, I was excited to try Windows 8. I was taking the leap. I like Windows 8 and after 5 minutes of getting used to the new interface it was working fine for me. We did buy this computer for our 14yr son and so it was his turn to have some fun. It worked well, very fast. Then day 2. He was playing his favorite game, and called me over because the computer was frozen. Could not do anything with it. Hard boot. No good. Used the "one key recovery" feature, to roll back to original settings. Came back up for a bit then, would not load Windows any more at all. Talked to the nice lady at Lenovo and she offered to send factory recovery disks at no charge. I will update this when we try to recover. Great computer, no so sure about the software, may need a few updates before Win 8 is perfect.

Update Dec 20th : Lenovo sent recovery disks. Attempted recovery with Lenovo on the phone to guide me. Did not work, the computer is going back to be repaired. Not too happy now, but cannot complain about the service, it was fine. I hope the machine works properly when it gets back, will update.

Update Jan 17th : Still waiting. They are replaceing the motherboard and do not have the correct one in stock at the repair center it is at, so they say, must come from China or something, not a very happy customer at this point.

Update Jan 29th : Lenovo is now not the company I would recomend

Update Feb 16th : Finally have the computer back. It is running well. Lennovo support was terrible giving mis-information and outright lies were told to us. According to the "Lenovo Depot Repair Center Repair Action Report" that came back with the machine, the repair was replace hard drive. The telephone support told us that the motherboard needed to be replaced and it was not available and that is why the repair was taking over 5 weeks. If it was jus t a HDD replacement it should have taken no time at all. There is no problem finding a HDD at a repair depot I would hope. I am a very unhappy customer Lenovo. I hope that some people will think twice about buying any product from you. As a small business owner, if something this bad happened, I would bend over backward to make sure my customer was happy in the end. No such thing with Lenovo. I asked maybe if they could put in an extra 4GB of ram to help make up for my inconvience, no reply. The only thing that really surprised me was that we actually got our computer back. Lenovo you need to seriously look at how you treat your customers.

Really, how could you let this type of thing happen? I'm pretty sure out of the "12 people found this helpful" you probably lost a sale, maybe more than one. Bad business Lenovo.

I am very happy with my purchase, the laptop works great, loads fast, is functional for my requirements (administrative software management, accounting). I found it a little uncomfortable with the mouse because when writing sometimes place the cursor changes when you rub your hand over the surface, you could adjust the sensitivity and improve this point, browse the internet fine, operation is quiet and does not heat too much like other laptops, have available 2 USB 3.0 ports that have no taste because i dont haver such devices. I'm using Windows 8 for the first time and I have difficulties handling, but I understand that I will know as has happened with previous versions (although so far I like it :)) definitely would recommend this purchase

My daughter absolutely LOVES this laptop. Very good quality and a very good brand. Lenovo used to be called IBM and is a fantastic choice for any computer need. This laptop is fast and has plenty of memory and processing speed to keep the average PC user very happy. If you want a computer for gaming, I would suggest a different model that has a little more power but I would still go with a Lenovo brand. Much cheaper than Alienware. The same laptop on another site was about $80 more because of the shipping and tax which Amazon did not charge! Saved me a lot of money and made my daughter and me VERY happy.

super fast and the screen is excelent for hi def videos. sound quality of the speakers is excellent as well. however, mine had some issues with a faulty driver when I got it so I did have to reinstall windows 8 which was the cause of much dismay at the time, but the computer works excellently now!

Just wanted another cheap laptop to replace the Toshiba satellite that I have, which has been a good laptop overall but with age now is falling apart and has had battery/charging issues for the last year or so.

Now the Lenovo at $350 after taxes and shipping seemed like a good choice given the features it contains.

Pros: bright crisp screen

features (500gb hdd, hdmi, two 3.0 usb ports)

Cons: The keyboard keys are clacky, and not smooth -the Toshiba had MUCH better keyboard feel. This is really the largest issue for me, as I can resolve any software related issues.

EFI boot: This is my first pc with UEFI boot control. I can say I'm not a fan, but I was able to figure out how to get Linux installed and bootable alongside the delivered Windows 8 OS. So far I've not been able to get Linux to boot from the EFI/Windows boot menu, but need to use F12 to catch the BIOS at start up and switch to the HDD as the boot source (after having enabled 'legacy' boot support from the BIOS menu).

Windows 8: I was really looking forward to using this, and had been dismissing the public reviews. Metro is OK, but really seems to only make sense on a tablet. On a desktop/laptop w/out a touchscreen, Metro is just plain idiotic. It feels very much half-baked, especially since 'real' applications still run on a 'desktop' screen that looks like every windows desktop since W95, only without a start button. Glad to hear MS is caving and rolling in some customer demanded revisions.

The touchpad freezes up often -which may be more related to something with Windows 8 -I don't see this problem when running Linux on it.

ASUS K52JT-XT1 15.6" Brown Laptop Bundle

ASUS K52JT-XT1 15.6' Brown Laptop BundleI got this laptop at Tigerdirect after black friday for 799 and it hasn't let me down once. Blazingly fast the I7 though clocked at 1.7GHZ will go to 2.4GHZ on one of the cores when an extra push is needed (this is done automatically). Dedicated video card is great, and has handled my editing and video gaming great to this point. Microsoft Visual Studio, and Microsoft Web Expressions both run amazingly fast. Word/Exel/Powerpoint all come up almost instantanious. Battery life isn't the best in the world, but it does have a lot of power settings you can mess with. I however tend to keep it set at High Performance even when unplugged, which is primarily my problem. Overall, awesome laptop, you won't regret getting this.

To be fair I was happy with the power and the graphics of this laptop. It handled my favorite MMO WOW wonderfully. I bought this as a pre-xmas gift to my self. To my horror it crashed on 1/1/2011. A great way to start the year. Sent the computer to Asus 3 days later and they're still repairing it after 16 days. I asked if they can just replace it and said, thats not covered by the warranty. Maybe I was the unlucky 1% but keep in mind, if this thing died on you, you're stuck with a lemon.

It stays relatively cool when in use and lasts quite a while on the battery supplied (I get about 4+ hours when word processing and browsing the web). I have a slightly different model. I have an E420 1141-A51. This machine is not for gaming. I have had problems with the video card drivers. Games and some video processes have caused the system to freeze or blue screen. After resolving these issues, I steer clear of these kinds of applications.

As it was my first time to buy a laptop via internet, I was little nervous. But there was no problem at all. This new laptop is working very well and I am so satisfied.

ASUS 1225B-SU17-BK 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

ASUS 1225B-SU17-BK 11.6-Inch LaptopAsus has made a fantastic product at a great price. I previously owned an Eeepc 900 and loved it for about five years. I learned to use linux with it, I fell in love with Ubuntu using it and really got hooked on having a computer smaller than a pad of paper. I was worried that the Tablet would end Netbooks for good and hated the idea of a crummy throw away operating system made for cell phones, and incapatibility with windows. Then I heard Asus was coming out with this next-Gen netbook and I was excited. I have had it for a while now and feel it deserves a review. I Love It! It is so fast for its size and has tons of space. I run my website off of it and use it for writing papers, editing photos, watching movies and basic email/internet use.

Looking for a small PC..? If you have money I would suggest you get a Mac book, If not... maybe consider this one under $440. Happy with my purchased! So far.. One of the top netbooks that you can get under 12 inches for 2012. 4G Ram and 320 Hard Drive, pretty good for the size. This is perfect to people who loves to travel..like me. I don't want to bring my heavy laptop with me when I travel. Thin and light 3.2 lbs and faster than other netbooks who only have 1G or 2G RAM. So far my only complaint is the battery, it said on the box up to 7 hrs.. mine only last 4 1/2 or 5hrs at times on hybrid mode. Well no biggie...that's good enough for me thats a lot. I mean, battery consumption also depends on the task you are doing on the computer. Well if you are comparing this to Acer aspire one 722, Just to let you know, I bought the acer aspire one 722 before this one which has exactly the same specs but lasted only 15days, Gladly returned it..the power just did not turn on again. Lemon.. Do not get acer. This one is better.

Before I begin I will provide a little more information about the product that should be given in the description.

The Windows Experience Index is 3.7. The individual ratings are as follows.

Processor 3.7

RAM 5.6

Graphics 4.3

Gaming Graphics 5.8

Primary hard Disk 5.6

The 320 GB HDD is partitioned into two partitions. One 99.9GB and the other 183GB. Not really sure why they did that but not really a negative.

The Netbook also comes with a TON of bloatware. Tons of ASUS apps such as a top dock, a special media sharing app, a BIOS updater, E-CAM (adding effects to the webcam) and a trial of TrendMicro AntiVirus. There might of been more that I forgot because I uninstalled most of them as soon as the device booted up.

Interestingly it also has a built in OS that you can quickly boot into by pushing the button next to the WiFi button. Good for quickly checking something on the internet.

The Netbook as a whole is very solid. The Keyboard is a little cramped but not bad seeing as it is a 11" screen. The backlight is very bright and crisp. The tracpad is a little over sensitive out of the box for my liking and the uni-button on the tracpad takes time getting used to.

The webcam is the usual low quality webcam but has a physical switch that blocks the camera and also a digital zoom button along with a on light for the paranoid.

Under the tracpad there is a on light, charging light, HDD light, WiFi light, and a caps lock light.

It has a app for sending media over WiFi to other devices but I don't have a device that supports it to test it out on.

Summery:

Good Excelent battery life (5+ hours of actual use), Decent keyboard, great performance for the price, built in operating system

Bad Amount of bloatware

Weird Partitioning of HDD.

I will update this review is anything breaks or goes wrong.

I wanted hardware that was this small cheap and packed. I needed high specs like 4Gig ram and decent processor. I didn't want to have to pay for windows since it gets flushed when I get it anyway but the general public hasn't accepted that M$ is on its was to being phased out anyway. Other that that all the hardware works great with Ubuntu and my requirements. Free shipping was fast and reliable. First week but running strong and looks slick too. I respect ASUS for kicking my ACER habit. I will be buying ASUS for my work horse Desktop now. I recommend this to anyone looking for a portable mobile with good specs and especially to open source computer nerds who could appreciate this piece of machinery. :D

We got this for my wife to use while we travel, paid a little under $500 with software and a padded sleeve included. It was the only computer we could find that had decent speed & 4 gigs of RAM, was ultra portable that cost less than $800. We could have gotten a tablet but she felt the storage and ports of a real computer would be more useful. It's very compact and is surprisingly fast -with the 1.6 dual-core AMD chip it runs 64-bit Windows 7 no problem. The display screen is nicer (although much smaller) than the one on my $1100 Thinkpad. I thought the smaller 11.6" screen would bother me but it's not bad at all. It remains to be seen how well it will hold up while traveling throughout SE Asia for months on end, but I'm hopeful.

ASUS G75VW-RS72 2.30 i7-3610QM 3GB nVidia 670M FullHD Laptop

ASUS G75VW-RS72 2.30 i7-3610QM 3GB nVidia 670M FullHD LaptopI've owned this for about 4 months now, I purchased it for 1400. I cant believe its a laptop... I was very hesitant before getting this, the reviews seem to be all over the place when being rated. I cant speak on their customer service, mine has been working with no issues at all but I dont want to find out. It really has the power of a desktop (almost the weight as well, it is heavy!) and great airflow. It will still get hot if its on your lap but internally it seems to be fine with all that hardware. An I7 cpu and 12GB RAM with a 3GB Graphics card is a powerhouse for a desktop, let alone a laptop. And for the money it is a great deal. It seems though that its hit or miss when buying one of these, some are great right out of the box, others BSOD or other service issues. Battery life is laughable, it is a "desktop replacement" tho.. I've been able to play games like SWTOR and Battlefield 3 on max settings, runs as smooth as can be and the 17.3 in. screen is just the right size (to keep it at least semi-mobile) and super clear (true HD display). I added a samsung SSD drive to it, was really easy to install and was only $79. The 7200 rpm sata3 HDD is quite fast but the SSD is just a bit faster. Ergonomic wise, its pretty comfortable for a laptop, full keyboard with number pad. Its still a laptop though and you would do better to have a real keyboard for it. If your situation is like mine: the need for more space, the ability to take your gaming on the road, and the desire for a powerhouse of a computer on the cheapish side that is great for all processes and games, then this is the one. If you really have no need to go mobile, just get a desktop.

This laptop is the best laptop you can get without spending your life savings almost. With great specs like RAM and i7 processor. You can't go wrong. I ran Bioshock: Infinite and Mirror's Edge on ultra graphics with no problems. Its portability is a little difficult, considering its size, but indefinitely worth it.

I have now had this laptop for about 6 months now and all of the ASUS bloatware had to be removed for this laptop to run halfway decently. Also the audio output jack just went out, so now I have to probably ship this laptop back just to fix a simple audio output jack.. though it will not accept any male adapters that fit in my iPad, girlfriend's laptop, android phone, and my girlfriend's iphone as well.

To keep it simple.. do not buy from ASUS as they've already caused me enough headache and well more than $1600 (the price I paid for this laptop) worth of my time.

original review "I'm running Windows 7 64bit, the OS that came with the laptop.

It's locked up on me over 20 times already, and the only software I've installed is MS Visual Studio, NotePad++, Sublime Text 2, Google Chrome, MS Visio, Pidgin, and Skype. There is absolutely no reason for this.

Today, it locked up three times in less than 10 minutes. (Lock up, hard power reset, wait, start PC, sign in to windows, let a few apps load: repeat two times.)

I should return the PC now but i'm going to give it another few days."

We bought this for my son, who is an editor, and this system is just about a desktop as far as speed and power. The video is exceptionally good resolution almost as good as my 30" desktop monitor 2560 x 1600 so the smaller screen with the 1080 looks great a little more money than a commodity laptop but what you get is well worth it if you do any real work or even watch movies then there is the game capacity I don't think you can beat it.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5308 15.6" Laptop

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5308 15.6' LaptopI cannot leave a five star, but for < $500 it was my preferred choice. This computer will sell between $450 and $650(do some online research). My main choices of CPU were I5, A6 in that order. Compared the Toshiba side by side for mechanical features at an electronics store. Initial dislike of Toshiba was the touch mouse pad. It has become more smooth with additional usage. While lowering or closing the top of the laptops, Asus and Gateway went into hibernate mode before the screen was halfway closed. The Toshiba would go into hibernate mode when lowered 90% of the way(the wife likes you to show some respect by closing the laptop). The keyboard touch is excellent, smooth, and quiet. The screen is great with color and clarity. The video itself is good for 4Gb Ram, but high end gamers will not agree with the graphics(they usually do custom computers). I can spend $20 to expand it to 6GB(search the internet and you will find a good deal on memory). My main concern so far is the disk drive. There is a sensor and timer in the electronics that performs a check exactly every 10 minutes(it is a medium click sound, and lasts 2 seconds). This noise does not occur when playing a DVD movie, and movie glitches did not occur). I still need to try the HDMI port to check a feature larger screen(another feature I liked when looking, and I saw the feature on another PC in the store). The graphite color and surface does not show smudges or fingerprints. The mouse buttons are loud, and may not be good while your wife is sleeping(but wait). There is a button in the center just below the space bar, that will allow you to disable the touch pad features so that you can use a mouse (your choice). Three USB ports with average distances apart. The audio and mic jacks are on the side of the laptop. And the final feature is the AC plug. It looks like Toshiba is trying to address the problems consumers have had in the past(including me). But, considering the past problems of the AC/Jack, and the noise of the DVD drive, I still want to keep this computer.

It came on time, and works OK.

Toshiba Satellites seem to have a much better long-term track record than many of the other laptops, so I went with this. For the small difference in price, it was well worth going with the i5 processor (over the i3). Not so sure it would have been worth going to an i7. Maybe a little bulky to carry around all day, but it's worth it for the pluses of the 15"+ screen and full size keyboard.

Has everything you NEED, and a few things that you probably WANT. Not a dream machine, but definitely a workhorse.

Good value.

I purchased this laptop at Best buy. Exactly 13 months after purchase, its parts started failing one after the other. I have already replaced the display panel, had to find alternatives for a defunct audio out jack, unreliable DVD drive and am facing overheating problems. It seems to be an inexpensive product but the cost of getting it repaired after a year or so is a real nightmare. Warranty extension is a must. Thats the only way to shield yourself from problems you will face after one year or so after purchase... due to its poor build quality. Buying this was a big mistake. Will stay away from Toshiba products in the future.

Dell XPS XPS15-1579sLV 15-Inch Laptop

Dell XPS XPS15-1579sLV 15-Inch LaptopI bought this since I heard rave reviews about this being one of the best designed and performing gaming laptops. Even though its not explicitly labeled "Gaming" doesn't mean that it isn't!! This has truly performed all my other laptops and ultrabooks I have ever owned.

What I love:

-Quad Core Processor performs outstanding

-32gb SSD Drive (I installed Windows 8 on this and it boots incredibly fast!!)

-Nvidia graphics (try playing Assassins Creed 3 on this, its amazing)

-Design is incredible, looks incredibly slick

-Thing despite it being a 15" screen size

-Battery Life is Superb, this laptop has lasted me over 7-8 hours watching movies (because of the dual graphics card that maximize efficieny)

-2 Integrated speakers provide solid audio quality which seemed to by lacking on my other ultrabooks

-Bluetooth 4.0

-Sd Card Reader, HDMI, & Blu-Ray DVD reader tie this all together!!

-Price Is Incredible compared to my friends Macbook Pro 15" that costs $500-$800 more

What I don't like:

-I've been told that it looks like a "Wanna-Be Mac" (even though this outperforms my friends Macbook Pro which costed much much more)

Overall 5/5 Stars

There aren't many laptops on the market that can offer the ergonomics and build quality of this new XPS 15. I wanted an Ultrabook like feel/battery life, but with a larger 1080 screen and disc drive. I have never before been impressed by a Dell product, but they have clearly stepped up their game and this fit the bill perfectly.

I have been using this computer for about a month now, and I honestly have 0 complaints. While this is the most basic XPS 15 offered, it still gives excellent performance. The i5 on this particular model is only dual core, but I have had no problems gaming or with any other task I have given it. Coming from a quad core AMD on my previous laptop, this processor hands down performs better, not to mention, I can usually squeeze a good 4+ hours of use out of the battery.

The screen is brilliant and the fact that it is 1080p makes the 15" screen feel like a 20" screen when carrying out everyday tasks. If you're looking for something sleek and solid with an HD screen like--dare I say--a MacBook, look no further. Perhaps I was being picky but in looking through just about every Windows laptop currently available, this was the only one of its kind. Compare the price of this to that of a similar MacBook Pro and the XPS 15 is a clear winner. I have to agree with the other reviewer that said this laptop is worth every penny.

One thing to note is that the hard drive seems to be more of an HDD/SSD hybrid drive. From what I can tell, you cannot access the 32gb SSD portion independently from the HDD portion. It will act as a single 500gb drive, but the 32gb SSD gives it some sort of "cache" that improves performance and boot time.

Yes, a RGB screen. But it probably means nothing to people who are not nerds. Beside, you get what you paid for. DELL has started order from the major Chinese supplier of Apple, so there should be no quality issue at all. Mine works great so far.

It is great laptop, mine came with some bad wifi issue but that was resolved by Dell quickly.

The look and feel of this laptop is very good and when you will hold such a kind of laptop, you would never want to go for something below level from this Laptop.

You will not find any information about this laptop with value as XPS15-1579sLV as that value is amazon internal, which was confirmed by Dell to me.

To get more appropriate value, look for DELL XPS 15 L521X. By searching this you can find all the information that you need.

Great value of the price and functionality wise too.

The Screen 1080p quality is really amazing and boot time is 3 seconds, that is true 3 seconds from the time you press power on button to see Windows 8 screen.

For the money (paid only $375 on a bid site 6 months ago) it's a great value for a netbook with 2GB DDR3, 320GB HDD and Windows Home Premium. The 11.6" size is pretty ideal from my perspective small enough to carry around and yet a full-size keyboard. The screen is bright and clear and the tactile response of the keyboard is better than any netbook that I've used. It's really too bad that CTL netbooks are not more widely available.

Great battery life but awful performance. I bought this mainly because of the battery life. I thought this was a good alternative for macbook air. I was wrong. I enjoy opening multiple windows when I do my work. This laptop can't handle the multitask aspect. My internet browsers crushes at least 2 times a day. I spent $400 for a Toshiba before and it did a better job than this laptop. Overall, it is very slow and not worth the price. This feels more like a netbook than the ultrabook.

I bought this direct through HP Home and Office. It's a nice little laptop. It is light, and very snappy. It did not come with a lot of crapware. However, I've only had the laptop for two or three weeks, and last night I got error messages repeatedly that the hard drive was about to fail. I hope that it will not be a huge hassle to get HP to fix this problem. I'd give it five stars if it were reliable.
