I had this Lenovo product for two years and in the first year the hard drive died and I had to send it in to be fixed. The second year the samething happen and the operating system went out as well. It took Lenovo 3 months to tell me if they were going to fix it. They never did and exchanged it for a better pc with a brand name that I heard off. HP ENVY DV7-7200 Quad Edition HYBRID Notebook PC; DV7T
My only complaint with this machine is that it came with Windows 8 and supposedly HP doesn't doesn't want to support it with Widows 7 installed. I found the correct support drivers and installed Windows 7 (This is an upgrade from Windows 8!). I really like the performance, fingerprint password feature and all of the capabilities and connections available. It's worth the money!

ASUS A53E-XA2 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black)
Sorry for the length, but I feel buyers should know... I own two Dell desktops, a Toshiba laptop, and an Asus gaming laptop. I feel that I am very adequate with technical knowledge and I handle most of my support issues personally (i.e. hardware upgrades, repairs, as well as software issues). I researched desktops and laptops extensivelly before I made any purchases. I recently had to purchase a laptop for a graduation gift for my son. I wanted to get him a good laptop for college, which could handle all his classwork and also provide some entertainment. I found numerous reviews on laptops, and two of the most relaible sources listed Asus and Toshiba as tops in reliability. This does not suprise me. I love my Asus gaming laptop. My Toshiba laptop had issues when I tried to use the recovery disk to take it back to its factory state. Toshiba's customer service was useless and I really feel that they were running a scam to get me to service the laptop through them. I was not happy with them, thankfully I could fix it myself (Clean install of operating system because their recovery disc, the one that came with it, and the two I had to purchase directly from them, were corrupt and would not install). This brings me back to Asus. Who is Asus, but the manufacturer of top hardware for other companies. They are the manufacturers of motherboards and such for companies like Dell and HP. When you buy a Dell or HP, you are most likely purchasing an Asus product. Therefore, why not just buy the Asus instead. Take a good look at their warranty... not bad, is it? I cannot comment on their custumer service, because I have never had to contact them. From other sources I hear that they have one of the best support services in the US. Moving along, this takes me to this Asus model. I struggled with my decision to purchase this model due to the ratings. I always take others personal experiences into consideration. However, in this case I decided to follow my own instincts and disregard what others said. After searching high and low, this was a great price for a laptop with these specs, and from a manufacturer who I have solid faith in. I bought it. I took the time to set it up properly... which if you have ever done this, it is not a plug and play process. It is a grueling 3-4 hours of creating recovery discs (you can just use the partition, but why take the chance), updating hardware (drivers and such) and fully updating windows. You MUST fully uninstall the security software (virus, firewall, etc...) that comes with the laptop if you decide to go with another security software company. DO NOT JUST PUT YOUR OWN SECURITY SOFTWARE ON WITHOUT UNINSTALLING THE FACTORY STATE SOFTWARE! (This could be the cause of a lot of issues) To fully uninstall, I suggest you go to that company's support website and follow their directions for uninstallation, including using their downloadable tool if one is provided. When you have two different security software products installed on the same computer, you could create a wicked war that will cause operating system errors, failures, and unfortunately crashes. Hmmmm, sound familiar? While this process is time consuming, it should be followed no matter which laptop you purchase! After following all of this, I found this laptop to be excellent. No errors, no failures, and definitly no crashes. Not to disregard other buyer's issues and reviews, no company is perfect and lemons do make it to the market. It is up to you to decide, but in my opinion, I have purchased a wonderful laptop, with great specs, for an amazing price. I am so happy I followed my instincts. Congratulations Asus, you have once again raised the bar!
Now let's get a few things straight right off the bat. It has no USB 3.0. It also has no WiMAX or WIDI capabilities.
That is the end of my cons list.
Now for the pros. For $529.00, you get:
-The latest Intel i5 processor with Sandy Bridge, running at 2.3ghz with turbo boost up to 2.9ghz. And it works fabulously.
-A 640gb hard drive
-A comfortable chiclet keyboard complete with a numpad.
-One of the best touchpads I've used on any laptop, ever.
-A 1-year standard warranty AND a 1-year accidental warranty. I love ASUS.
-A damn sexy computer.
Now I don't know what the negative reviewers on this site are talking about. I have not once had "programs open at random" or anything of that nature. I have never once had a problem turning on or shutting down the computer, or lag of any sort. Then again, I did take the time to remove any programs I did not want when I received it, I created restore disks, and I configured my anti-virus properly. PCs with Windows these days are incredibly dumbed-down, user-friendly machines. Now I understand that not all people are technologically savvy. I understand that even with the user-friendliness of Windows 7 things can be extremely confusing, especially getting things setup for the first time. And that is fine. However, I think it is just plain silly and extremely misleading to rate a product 1/5 stars when the only thing that should be rated 1/5 is your own technological know-how. I'm sorry, I just felt like that needed to be said. Now back to the actual review.
This computer runs quickly, has a decent display, the hdmi works flawlessly, the Smart-Logon facial recognition works incredibly (you do have to set it up and configure it correctly, obviously), it runs as fast as you would think the i5 should, it looks SEXY AS HELL, it feels like it's built like a tank, it has never once felt more than SLIGHTLY warm no matter what I'm putting it through, it connects to the internet 2 minutes after unboxing and is an overall GREAT DEAL.
If you are reading this review and considering this laptop, but are afraid to purchase it based on the negative reviews, I understand your concern. But I'm here to tell you that I had the same concern, purchased it anyway, and am very glad that I did. If you can do without USB 3.0 and WIDI/WiMAX capabilities, this computer is perfect for you. In my opinion, it is just as durably built, just as fast, just as nice as most $700.00 laptops I've seen recently. Don't let the bad reviews steer you away. Read the good ones. I don't know why there are so many bad reviews about this computer.I recently bought this computer and I am very happy with this product. ASUS used to make motherboards, they know what they're doing!! I have owned SONY VIAO, Toshiba, HP, and others and I am well acquainted with good computers and bad computers. I am very happy with this computer. The i5 processor has been able to handle my every need, it also has a turbo processor which has helped immensely.I travel a lot (usually get about 6hrs, which is a lot for a screen this big) and the battery life is great. The option to have the computer running on high performance or battery saving, I think that is great depending on what you're doing. The screen size is great. I wasn't to comfortable with the keyboard at first, but after a week I was.
The only thing I can truly complain about with this computer is the camera. The video quality is medium, which is not what I expected of ASUS. Not a problem however if you don't use it too much. If it is a problem you can buy a good one on the internet from $40. Overall I am very happy with this computer, other than the camera I have no problems. I will update if there is anything wrong with it.

I have read others issues with this computer and have seen none of such with my machine. The only thing bothersome to me is that the price of computers drop so much, a month ago I paid $100 more. Cannot blame anyone for that though, its just how it is. The computer runs great and I do not have any sort of errors or freezing problems to note about. I am not doubting the other users having problems or their capabilities of being able to use the computers, however I am wondering if some (the ones complaining about software issues) might be related to malware or adware that was inadvertantly installed due to navigating or downloading certain things from the web. I do not use this laptop for heavy computing or tasks. I bought it for convenience of having a computer to tote around with me. Its perfect for that and I would not hesitate to buy it again. After much research I chose the ASUS A53E-XA2 laptop because it had all of the features I wanted at a reasonable price. There were several bad reviews from people who apparently had some issues with this model, but I have had none of the problems others have described and am very happy with my purchase. However I also created my own back-up disks and removed the inferior pre-installed antivirus software and installed a better one. Twice actually because I later changed my mind and decided on a different antivirus. Never had a problem.I would point out that the trackpad is EXTREMELY sensitive. I've just hovered my finger over it while I was reading and the next thing I know I've unintentionally clicked something. It also has sophisticated features like you can zoom in or out of a page or turn on the scroll function, this has also unintentionally happened several times. This is to be expected from a trackpad with so many capabilities. I don't really consider this a problem, just an annoyance.
I will also say that it is sometimes a little slower than I expect when opening programs. I am a photographer and often have several different things open at the same time between editing programs and various websites I use. Sometimes there is a lag when I open a program for the first time, or when a program or site is open but unused for awhile and I go back to it. But this only happens the one time, and not even all the time, and after that it's fine. I've also noticed this becomes a bigger problem and my editing programs start lagging if I don't fully shut down the computer for several days. Again, this is something I can live with.
I have not removed any of the other pre-installed software because far as I can tell they have not caused any problems, but others who are more, um, persnickety let's say, might want them gone. Shouldn't be a big deal.
Overall I would definitely recommend this laptop. And already have. Just have realistic expectations, you're not going to get a $1000 worth of performance from a $500 computer. But it is a solid computer and can handle a lot.

I love the laptop. It's small and super light weight. The web camera is really good. The laptop is very fast. The design is awesome!
The only downside for me is that it lacks a DVD/CD drive but the laptop is small and it already has so many features it's understandable. xD

I purchased the HP Pavilion dm1-4210us 11.6-Inch Laptop to use while traveling. My HP Pavilion p6-2108p Desktop remains my primary PC and I also consider the dm1-4210us to be a back-up to it because it has a 500GB HD. The HP dm1-4210us is a very nice little laptop; I wanted something small enough to watch my own movies/listen to my music on a plane or in a hotel, light and easy to carry and good to check e-mail. This laptop fits the bill. My most serious complaint is the built-in speakers. The HP BEATS audio hype led me to expect some pretty good sound but these speakers are just too small to deliver. I guess that's why they sell the BEATS headphones. I'm going to make do with some headphones and a set of portable speakers. I also wish manuals were included in the box; I don't like printing out 40+ pages at home. Other than that, I am still trying to figure out my battery life. Initially, the indicators said I had about 4 hrs of battery life, considerably short of the 7 advertised and my expectations of 5-6 hrs. Today I found I had over 5 hrs of battery life indicated, more in line with what I expect. The touchpad is a bit tricky but not a problem after a short while. I did buy a wireless mouse to use when space permits but I'll be OK without it. I'm really happy with my HP Pavilion dm1-4210us and can highly recommend it.ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS 2 MONTHS IN: I'm still happy with my purchase but concerns about speed have cropped up. The dm-1 was taking a while to boot up until I got ruthless about start-up programs. It can also be slow responding while web-surfing if too many background programs are running. A key to this laptop is getting it set-up properly. The HP external speakers make a big difference in the sound quality. I really like the HDMI output to put my movies on my 32" TV.

I love the whole DM1Z series and was one of the first adopters a year ago, got a new model a week ago DM1Z-4200 Customized.
Here you see a ship-ready (preconfigured model) but its basis is same as for my customized DM1Z (I selected E2-1800 processor instead of stock 1200).
Immediatelly I removed Harddrive & replaced with Crucial SSD, sold HDD (note: HDD is 5400 rpm speed, unlike my HP Elitebook's whose HDD is 7200rpm also coupled with SSD except it's Intel-branded).
I paid $30 more for a custom config.
People who waste money on MacbookAir need a life that product is so much about appearance & hype than function, likewise iPhone fad is a fad Motorola Atrix and Samsung galaxy beat iPhone into the dust.
But I am a dry technical professional so I don't represent teenagers, kids of housewives who think anything made by Apple is "good".
This HP is a dirt-cheap superNetbook or subNotebook whcihever term is preferred.
"super" is because it is NOT based on Intel-Atom, but is based on much better (for Netbooks only) E2-1800 processor which offers discrete-class Videocard, this little tiny supernetbook has video capability of a full blown midrange laptop.
While I do serious work on HP Elitebook that machine costs like a used car ($2K), requires ACpower (it eats battery in 4 or some hours due to crazy hi-end video), it has nVidia, weighs and sizes like a mobile workstation. That's fine. BUT for travel and fun computing on the go I got this DM1Z.
Sometimes I feel weird because some days even prefer using this DM1Z instead of a powerful Elitebook which sits at home.
DM1Z will run for 8-11 hours depending on how good you are with power management settings & wireless & video use, which far better than MacbookAir which is using Intel core i3/i5 processors more suitable for fullsized laptop than ultraportable laptop or netbook which is what MacboorAir or HP DM1Z are. Macbook air will die in 5-7 hours, and IF YOU NEED Intel core i3/i5 processing power I just had a thought, why not get a normal laptop then? Netbook is supposed to be optimized for portability, weight, batterylife and connectivity; in this case DM1Z is also optimized for imporessive Video card rivaling many normal-sized laptops. I run even Adobe Photooshop, YouTube, etc and all this multitasking is tolerable, not same experience as on HP EliteBook but still UNEXPECTEDLY good for a $400 netbook!
E.g. I set brightness to minimum.
Also I applied antiglare film to mimick HP Elitebook & other PROFESSIONAL displays which are always Antiglare, unlike consumer cheap type which is glossy to attract fools.
Not having an option for antiglare screen is my only complaint but really film costs $10-15 (HiDef version) and no big deal, besides many people aren't using it for business like myself and actually prefer glossy/glare screen.
P.S. Changing TN LCD to IPS type LCD would increase laptop price by $50 or so, and as a side note to HP's management:
I WOULD PAY FOR IT if it were available
IPS is a must for professional graphics work (e.g. CAD, photography).

It seems i may be the sole voice of reason here. Perhaps the fellows who wrote their reviews here had either the unfortunate luck of getting a defective pc OR don't know how to maximize battery and performance life out of their tools by themselves.Frodo, for instance, probably could have saved himself quite a bit of money if he had simply turned on the "finger touch" in the easy to find/easy to search for settings.
And as for Leon complaining about it being bulky, or heavy? Its hardly the case here. I've held far heavier laptops. Sure in comparison to, say, a macbook air or android tablet it will be much heavier. Maybe then Leon should have sought out those kind of machines instead. %30 is the standard percentage for any computer and isn't unusual. More then likely, this fellow was running more then one program on his Lifebook. Internet/word/skype/painter back to back for instance, will make any computer slow and even assassinate the battery life.
This is not a desktop, it's a portable work station. And a damn good one.
it feels sturdy the moment you hold it. while the lock is somewhat jittery, it's a solid hold. Once locked, it's not going anywhere until you push the unlocking button. The screen isn't delicate. It too is ready to be poked at, swiped at, and drawn on with the accompanying tablet pen.
And oh my goodness dat wacom pressure sensitivity. Ever sat with your wacom tablet and longed for the screen you drew on to be the screen you could see your drawing? Without spending nearly $3000 for it? Yeah, this is your answer. The Lifebook was geared toward the graphic artist. And it shows. And you can customize the settings on your pen, the calibration, turn off the pen/touch feature if you want. This machine thought of it.
the bottom of the laptop houses doors you unscrew to reveal an extra space for more ram, an **extra battery**, and an extra hdd or ssd if you want more space. NO MORE will you have to take apart the entire laptop to clean out a dusty fan! There is a door for that as well. Genius. You can even remove the cd/dvd drive and replace it with a plastic insert to save on battery life. Who needs cds anyway amirite?
Since I used mine primarily for drawing, I clocked my battery with about 6.5 hours of battery with perhaps an hour to an hour and a half of battery life more. And that's one one battery! I don't have the second one yet. 7 glorious uninterrupted hours of drawing. You can best achieve the long long battery life by running **one program at a time**. If you are the type that runs my computer atop mp3 player atop google atop art programs you will get about 3 hours of life out of the Lifebook. But that should come to you as common sense. Mine came with a power saving program that appeared to be standard with the machine. I took advantage of that and voila! Batteries galore. I cannot imagine how much life it will have with two batteries.
This Lifebook is portable, long lasting, sturdy and a delight to use. I highly recommend it.
The touch screen on this model only works with the pen, not with finger touch THE DESCRIPTION HERE DOES NOT SAY THAT. Now i have to return the item and orderva more expensive one. The Amazon descrptions need to be more clear.

I bought this laptop for 400 bucks from Amazon. My mom was learning how to use the computer, so I needed a budget laptop for her. She loves it. We haven't had any problems and the basic functional things like email, video chat, word processing, and applications are all there. What else does a 58 year old woman need during her retirement? I bought this Laptop for college and basic web surfing around the house. I also use it to connect to my Xbox 360 for steaming music and such. And to get drivers for my main computer (Gaming desktop). Anyways back to the review.Pros:
AMD's Fusion APU is actually a decent processor.
AMD HD 6310 is a decent video card. Able to play some of today's games at low to medium settings.
Acer build quality around this laptop is pretty good, for $400.
Not a finger print magnet, which i love.
Really quiet and easy to type on.
Cons:
Processor can get maxed out at 100% alot, so i would only recommend light multitasking (haha, i guess im used to my AMD 6 core CPU to much)
Fan runs at full blast (loud), while it boots up. Only for a few seconds though.
Acer bloatware is annoying, and why is there two antivirus's pre-installed on the OS? But once you uninstall all the useless bloatware, it actually gets a nice performance boost.
I dislike the glossy screen. A matte finish would have made sense, given the overall design.
Came with out-dated Bios, which gave me some problems. Though, its easy to update to the latest Bios from the Acer website.
Even though, none of the cons are a deal beaker. Just needs some room for improvement, i would recommend this laptop. Its perfect for the college student. I can not recommend this as a desktop replacement, the processor is to slow for anything other than some light multitasking, web surfing, video chat, etc.
So if your looking for a decent laptop for college are basic computing, then this is your answer. And a good value at $400. Alot better than anything Intel has to offer at this price tag.

It's not touch screen with Windows 8, but for the price it's hard to argue against the hardware it has under the hood. Yes, 2013 smartphones will soon be as powerful as this laptop, but for normal use (student, business, general home use, NOT gaming) this laptop is great.The only nitpick I have on the laptop is no hard switch to disable the touchpad, though it has function keys to do so.

I got this laptop for Christmas and it is very fast. The finger print reader is very easy to use and makes logging on a breeze. It's fun to play with the webcam features. The thing that came bad on mine would be the sound and video card. Sometimes the sound and video freezes as well as there is sometime there are lines running through the screen. Being made of aluminum it is pretty heavy and is hard to lift with one hand. Also the aluminum dents very easily and while i am very careful with my electronics i got a dent within one week of using it. I would very well recommend this product as Hp will fix the problem and it usually shouldn't happen on any laptop.

I own a 2008 non unibody 15" Macbook Pro and I wanted a second laptop for Windows support. This laptop fits my needs.First of all, I'll list some of the things I didn't like about the laptop -
The screen lid is heavy, so if you tried to lift/open the screen with just one hand the whole laptop lifts up. Thus, to turn on the laptop or wake up from sleep, I have to use two hands.
Lame branding. On the lid, there's the acer logo in the middle which is great, but on the top right there's some logo for SignalUp (acer technology branding) that could have been omitted. It's not a sticker you can remove. Also the speakers have the words Dolby Theater and Professionally Tuned. Good to know a professional tuned the speakers, but it distracts from the overall aesthetics of the laptop.
Not a backlit keyboard. Not a deal breaker but nice to have, considering it's just a $20 add-on on Dell laptops.
Glossy screen. Not a big fan, and the viewing angles aren't as a good as a current Macbook Pro.
Bloatware, yeah it's there and it's annoying. Took a while to uninstall.
No light to indicate camera is on. It's trivial, but how would I know someone isn't secretly taping me?
Positives +
+ The trackpad on Macs are superior but I was surprised to find the trackpad on this Acer to work pretty well. Two finger scroll is mainly what I love and used to. It also supports Chrome two finger scroll horizontally to go back/forward. The downside is that trackpad area is fairly tiny and at times I would accidentally make a pinching gesture and it would increase/decrease the font on the website I'm on.
+ USB 3.0 and HDMI input. Currently, no Apple laptop supports USB 3.0 and to get HDMI out you have to buy and carry around a dongle.
+ Looks fairly good, seems solidly built 4lbs, not too thick blue color, not black or the same old aluminum color.
+ Screen is generally good, producing vivid colors despite the glossiness. As long as you view it at the right angle, the screen looks sharp.
+ Battery life...very good. I played 2 720p MKV movies at full brightness and it lasted nearly 4 and a half hours. So I can see it going 8 hours for light web/document editing use. Battery is built-in, so it's not easily swappable.
Lastly, price...fantastic price for a second generation i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 500gb hard drive. I don't play any PC games so I can't comment on it's graphics power. I use Picassa to edit photos and it's pretty snappy with other apps opened (Chrome, Outlook 2010, Visual Studio). I also do not need an optical drive.
So to sum it up the laptop looks good (not a thick heavy ugly piece of plastic), good performance and good price (half the price of a 13" macbook pro). I do love OS X Lion but I feel Windows 7 has bridged the gap. There are +/to the various operating systems, but for the most part it comes down to preferences and software that you need to get a job done. In this case, I need Outlook 2010 (Outlook 2011 for Mac is still not up to par, and Visual Studio for coding). Highly recommended!
Dual-Booted: Installed Kubuntu 11.10 and runs flawlessly (just need small edit to get screen brightness adjustable and power managment improved-search in ubuntu 11.10 forums) but with about 90% of the battery life it gets in windows (Win7 power management little better) but still getting >7hrs battery life depending on usage.
Running python image analysis scripts as quick, if not quicker that on my Core 2 Quad on my desktop.
Screen looks great and the 1366x768 (I think) is brilliant as still can show a lot on the screen if using for coding and image displays.
The sound is good and makes watching series etc. great, especially helps having the 16:9 aspect ratio on the screen for most movies. Means picture not actually smaller than a 15inch screen.
Had this for 2 months now and no complaints.

This is my 2nd Acer laptop purchase in a few months from the TimelineX Series. This thing is light, powerful, and the battery lasts 6-10 hours depending on use. Just a note: doesn't have a CD drive. This is fine because I don't need it and it makes it lighter. When compared to a similar Macbook pro (exact same specs and $500+ more), this thing is awesome. Did a lot of research and found this to be the best combination of price, performance, reliability and size for our high schooler.Pros:
more than adequate speed for non-gaming use, no visible lag on anything
nice trackpad, good sensitivity not quite MacBook Pro level, but best I've seen on a PC
price is great, esp. given how comparable it is to a MacBook.
sturdy build, the aluminum body feels like it'll withstand a decent amount of real-world abuse toting back and forth to class
8-hr battery life means it'll last a full schoolday without needing to plug in
USB 3 and HDMI interfaces mean it'll still be relevant 5 years from now

Overall, we're super-happy with it so far! Highly recommended.

I've had more time to work with it, and am still super-happy. In particular I set up an external USB DVD drive (Amazon's Buffalo DVSM-PC58U2VB, just $35 or something) and plugged the laptop's HDMI into our 50" plasma TV to see how it'd work totally perfect, super-smooth video (my previous laptops had problems there), sound coming through the HDMI just like it's supposed to, and even impressive DVD player software bundled in from Acer (clear.fi? or something).
Far as I can tell the only serious competition for this would be the Toshiba Portege R830, which is lighter by a significant .9 pounds (3.2 vs 4.1) AND includes a DVD drive, but is $150 more and doesn't have USB 3.0. I'm sticking with the Acer.

IntroI prefer around a 13-14" laptop, I find that a netbook is too small for my big hands, but I find that a 15-17" laptop isn't as portable for what I want. You can find the standard 15.6" laptops for dirt cheap, but the 13-14" laptop range is harder to find a reasonably priced computer. When I found this computer, I realized I'd found something special. It had all the specs I wanted, a sleek chassis, slender design, a great processor, a great battery life, good memory and hdd size and at a decent price.
Overall Performance
This computer has an Intel Core i5 processor which is a quad-core processor which is sufficient for everything from everyday tasks to even some computer gaming. I'm not sure this is the machine you want for gaming on the go without the optical drive unless you're into that video game streaming service, which much lower grade laptops can handle just as well. Overall, the laptop is snappy and performs everything quickly and easily.
Display/Graphics:
The 13.3 display is quite beautiful. It's big enough to use yet small enough to remain portable. The colors and bright and crisp and the resolution is good even for movies. I'm not going to say that it is HD but that's not important to me anyhow. The screen is sturdily attached to the chassis of the computer via a cylinder like design. I believe that the graphics card has dedicated memory for which is a rarity in laptops.
Sound/Speakers:
The sound on this computer blows me away. It is amazing. Most laptop speakers are known for sucking even on Macbooks. But the speakers on this laptop are superb and there is rarely a reason you need external speakers. The sound is crisp and clear and it's just amazing how good the speakers are on this laptop.
Features & Accessories:
The keyboard is good, the keys are spaced more than your standard PC laptop though they take a little getting used to depending on what style of a laptop/keyboard you're switching from. The mouse-pad is ok, but a little smaller than I would like, though the pinch and double finger swipes are nice features but again take getting used to. Connection-wise, you've got 3 USB ports 1 of which is a USB 3.0 which is a nice feature. There's an HDMI port, VGA, mic, headphones and a card reader. It should be noted that like Netbooks most 13.3" laptops don't feature a DVD/CD drive and neither does this one. However, this shouldn't be a problem as you can pick up an external DVD drive relatively cheap online these days for those times you need a DVD/CD and a thumb stick, flash card or an external hard drive won't do.
Battery:
The battery life is outstanding for this little computer and provides anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on your usage. Which is great for a nice portable laptop. The plug also has a quick release feature so that if you trip on the cord the plug will disconnect from your laptop easily without causing damage to either the cord or the laptop. Also, the computer runs amazingly cool. It doesn't feel hot or even really warm to the touch even after hours of use and you can feel cool air blowing out the side which is quite nice.
Conclusion:
Everything in this laptop looks nice and is well designed. Simplicity, portability, great sound and sleekness of design are this products key features. If this sounds like the kind of laptop that will suit your needs I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.
HP Pavilion dm1-3020us Entertainment Laptop - Black
I love my new laptop! I have no complaints about it. It is everything I expected and does the work well. Prior to purchasing this, I did my research though; I knew what to expect. Physically, it looks great. The only minor downer is that I wish the keyboard was lit or something (but those are just small details, relatively speaking). The battery life is awesome; it easily lasts 7 hrs of continuous use. I read a review somewhere about the screen resolution not being the best, but it looks great to me. Clear enough (including webcam). Another thing I like is that it does not heat up as much as other laptops. The size is also great. After browsing netbooks (which I didn't really want but felt limited to because of my budget as a student), and browsing laptops, I am extremely satisfied with the choice I made; I do not feel limited in any way! HP made a great combination of netbook and laptop a reality!!!
UPDATE (8/19/12): Windows 8 RP (Release Preview) works out of the box. Windows 8 on dm1-3020us is much faster than Windows 7. I am using W8 RP on it and enjoying its performance.
1. OVERALL QUALITY: The notebook has high quality and solid feel to it. Compare to other notebooks/netbooks, the plastic is strong and it does not flex. It doesn't feel cheap. Very impressive. It is also stylish and thin. The whole notebook is flushed (top & bottom) there is no obtrusive element. It also comes with "HP Protect Smart" when your notebook is accidentally dropped, the hard drive is protected because of the design inside. DM1-3020us also stays cool on your lap. It is just warm (never hot!).
2. SCREEN: The screen is bright enough I use one lower than brightest setting. The resolution is incredible 1366 x 768 in 11.6" screen! You will not miss anything. The downside is that all the fonts are small. Although you could customize the text to be larger, it is not recommended. Also I prefer matte finish over glossy, but dm1-3020us comes with glossy finish, and I do not mind. But if you MUST have matte finish, then consider other netbooks.
3. BATTERY LIFE: I am not a gamer and I do not watch online movies or TV shows. I use it for word processing and browsing the web, check emails. With Wi-Fi on all the time and screen brightness one setting lower than the brightest, I used it for 7 hours!
4. KEYBOARD: This is quality full-sized keyboard. It is "Chiclet" styled keyboard. The keys are big enough for my thick fingers can comfortably type. And each key is spaced from each other generously. The keyboard does not flex when you press down. It is rock solid. However, each alphabet letter is positioned at the center of the key and not at the left corner. This might be a problem for those who use 2nd language keyboard transparent stickers.
5. TOUCHPAD: while others are not thrilled with the touchpad, I did not see any difference between the touchpad of Asus 1000HA and dm1. Since I use mini wireless mouse, this is not a problem. But when I did use the touchpad, it was fine for basic function. But pinch in & out needed work. However, I like the fact that you could disable the touchpad with two taps.
6. PERFORMANCE: It boots up fast and all the programs respond quickly. The AMD Vision chip is marvelous. Much, much faster than netbooks of Intel Atom processor class in the same price range. It rivals the speed of i3 chip of my other work notebook.
7. SIZE & WEIGHT: It is about 8.4" x 11.5" and about 1" thick. It is thinner than Asus eeePC 1000HA, but 1" larger due to the screen size. But it weighs just 3.4 lbs. It is small and light enough to carry it anywhere.
8. SOFTWARE: My dm1-3020us came with FREE MS Office 2010 Home and Student DVD (OEM)! I just had to activate the Office preinstalled. Other programs ("Bloatware" or 3rd party softwares) included, but you could easily remove them. BUT it is not wise to uninstall "HP Support Assistant" program it has very helpful "HP CoolSense" program that quiets the fan noise automatically. Other HP Media programs, you could select which to keep and which to uninstall depending on your need.
FEW NOTES:
[1] Upgrade your BIOS from f.3 to f.12 by visiting HP website.
[2] 3GB RAM is plenty for casual Office work, email, online TV viewing, and web browsing.
[3] Update to Windows 7 SP1.
FOR LINUX Users:
[1] I was able to install SnowLinux 11.04 (variation of Ubuntu 11.04). But WiFi & Touchpad do not work out of the box. You need to manually install WiFi driver (RT5390) and install touchpad driver from Synaptic Package Manager.
(UPDATE: Ubuntu 11.10 & Kubuntu 11.10 work out of the box including the Wi-Fi).
[2] dm1-3020us comes with 4 primary partitions, so you need to delete one partition to install Linux distro of your choice. I deleted (D:) partition.
[3] All in all, if you could install WiFi, then it is a great! I am dualbooting Windows 7 with SnowLinux 11.04 and I am enjoying the notebook immensely!
All in all, I am very happy with this notebook. HP did an excellent job! In short, dm1-3020us has the portability of a netbook, but the power of a notebook with longer battery life! Highly recommended.

Well I needed a new laptop since late 2010, but wanted to wait as long as possible for the new AMD FUSION (Vision) APU chip that is designed specifically for this class of "notbook" computers (netbook with mainstream notebook power). If you have read any reviews on the internet, they pretty much align with my experiences and expectations. The only difference on my system is the 8gb RAM upgrade, which brought my price just above $600. I'm fine with that as I tend to load alot of programs at once and could be useful for future Windows upgrade.Good:
-Excellent HD video playback; high resolution screen (note: I prefer a 12.1 screen, but 11.6 is acceptable; I don't know how people can tolerate 10 inch screens)
-Enough RAM and HDD space to meet your needs
-High quality audio output for such a compact machine
-Great battery life (lives up to 6.5 hours of normal use)
-Lukewarm heat on the bottom. It's so nice to actually have it on my lap without a damn laptop table.
-Lightweight, nice style design
Cons:
-CPU speed (1.6 ghz) slow for mainstream games, but more than sufficient for business users (i.e. Productivity tools).
-No optical drive, but you can get a decent one for $40 online. HP sells optional external drive with Blu Ray capability but it's $130 extra
-HP bloatware (you can uninstall of course)
-Fan is not loud, but noticeable if in a quiet room without ambient sound. (I'll take that over a hot bottom any day)
-Touchpad is probably the worst experience. Don't care for it, so I try to use a mini-mouse when possible
If HP offered a 12.1 inch version, then this unit is a MUST-BUY if you are in the market for a ultra portable and ultra affordable netbook.

I purchased this amazing little laptop last month. So far it's performed beyond my expectations. The dualcore 1.6-GHz AMD E-350 CPU is fast. While surfing the web, I get about 6 hours 20 minutes with medium brightness. Speaking of which, the 11.6" LED screen is particularly good. I'm impressed with the brightness and resolution of such a small screen. Speakers are excellent. Sound is crisp and clear. The hard drive is better than most laptops in this price range because its 7200RPM.I upgraded to 8GB RAM for ~$80. It was extremely easy. The bottom of the laptop has a snap on cover that you can remove and have access to the RAM, HDD, etc. Upgrading to a SSD would be extremely easy. I also bought an external Blu-ray player that is bus powered with a single USB cable. Tested out Inception on Blu-ray and it performed flawlessly.
Common concerns:
-> Touchpad When you double-tap the top left corner of the touchpad, a small orange light comes on in its place indicating that the touchpad has been turned off, so one can type without constantly hitting it. Double-tap again to enable it.
-> Keyboard While the keyboard does not have dedicated PgUp or PgDn keys, all you have to do is hold FN and the up or down arrow keys. The left and right keys also function as Home and End buttons when you hold FN.
-> Bloatware HP bloatware is very easy to get rid of and at the same time you can keep your essential HP stuff. When you start the laptop, go to the Bios and hit recovery. You should have a "Minimized Image Recovery" option from the recovery menu. This will do a clean install of Windows with NO bloatware and only the required HP components and drivers. Works like a charm, and your laptop will be faster!
Overall, I say this laptop is a must buy if you're looking for an ultraportable.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I am actually reviewing from this laptop. My first impression was wow this little thing looks cool. After unpacking things, I followed the insert that says Start Here. The battery is small and is contoured to look like the back flip part of the laptop and installs easily. It did add a bit of weight to the back but its still lighter than other laptops.I started the laptop up and made it thru most of the Windows 7 configurations but at the end of the settings could not get online. I didn't see anything telling me to press the F12 button to turn on the wireless and Bluetooth. There's a little light that turned from orange to a bluish white showing the wireless was now running.
Once I got the wireless thing fixed, I was able to update and download additional thing I like on my computers. The machine seems to run fairly fast for such a small PC. Certain things like installing MS Office made the internal fans rev up like a jet engine and blow out hot air. There's supposed to be a setting that you can let the pc know if its on a desk or lap to help control the heat and hot fan but I've been unsuccessful in finding this.
The laptop has a lot of mini led lights on the top and sides letting you know what's on or the status like power, HD, wireless, sound on/off, battery charging/complete. The main power button on the top left corner is actually very bright and lights up your room in the dark.
One of the 3 USB plugs is near the very front left side which can be a bit of a pain because if its on your lap gets in the way. The others are on the right in the middle which I found in a better spot that didn't interfere with things. There's an HDMI, and a media card slot which are a nice addition to this small laptop.
The keyboard is on the small side but not terribly small. I did find myself hitting the wrong keys because I feel that the spaces between the keys is a little too much and they could have made the actual keys a little bigger. They are flat keys just like the Apple keyboards. I see a trend in most laptops these days using this style.
The track pad gave me some issues as I felt the click buttons didn't work very well. It was easier to just double tap to select/click rather than the buttons.
The 11.6 inch display is bright and was pretty clear and was better than I expected. I don't think this is meant to work on all day only because you strain your eyes after a while.
One of my dislikes and the reason I gave it 4 stars is that the AC plug is a little short. The AC pack gets pretty hot so be careful where you place it.
There is tons of bloatware on the machine. There are two book readers, games and the usual HP program for every little thing possible. I've deleted most of them right off the bat. I really wish that when setting things up you get the option to install or not install the programs.
My conclusion is yes this is a small pc with no cd drive but it is fairly powerful and does a great job at handling strong programs and games. I do think its a little pricey for its size but it does have a big HD and lots of ram as well as a few other features you won't find on similar laptops this size.

i have read from others and am experiencing myself, the hard drive clicking about every 2 minutes or so. it is not only annoying, but also indicative of a future failure, and stalls the system when it clicks. so i am going to try and exchange it since i've only had it a week. intel does offer a fix for this problem on many notebooks, i think it only happens on 40GB models, however the fix is not compatible with the chipset of the notebook. have others had this problem?
The main pluses with this 2gb, 512mb, 40gb computer (other than those listed already) are that it comes with 3 (yes, three!) USB 2.0 ports when most low end computers still have 1.1 ports (the speed difference is AMAZING) and that it has 32mb of dedicated Video memory when all other companies are still using shared memory in their low end machines. Truly a great buy for someone that needs a good solid performer. BTW, exactly who in the corporate world uses all the features on those $3500+ machines? Really?!?This is part of a larger class of laptops running processors slower than 2.4 GHZ that are becoming the targets of deep discounts and rebates now that faster machines are on the move to market. ... This machine painlessly recognized both my home wired and wireless router connections, and I was online in 15 minutes after opening the box. For the price, you can't do better in terms of HDD size (40 GB!) and memory (512MB!!). Three issues: 1. The bundled CD-RW software is goofy and non-inutuitive. Although I was able to use it, I pitched it after two days of trying to figure out it's wacky interface and installed Nero. 2. This is neither ultra-thin or lightweight (6.2 lbs). Since most of my mobile needs take place in car, this is not an issue for me; your mileage my vary if you are hauling your hardware through airports. 3. The heat thing other reviewers talked about: yes, you can feel the warmth on the right side of the touch pad. Frankly, I haven't found a single laptop mouse-equivalent that I like as much as an actual mouse (unless I'm completely veggged on the couch or on a plane, I don't use the touchpad much anyway). I would not consider the heat an issue: most laptops have a hotspot someplace. 4. Battery life is middle-of-the-road...but offers excellent power management tools to give you advance notice of battery loss.
Great performance at this price point...more so if additional rebates are available.
I've used laptops for many years, but this my first personal purchase of one. Toshiba laptops enjoy a good reputation; based on my initial experience with this one, they should. Bottom line: I'd recommend this to my mom if she were in the market for one:-).... After looking at HP, Sony, dell and Compaq. I went out to buy 2435-s255 model but end up buying this because the price difference ...between these two models. The S255 has 2.4 pentium. But if u are not playing high end games and video editing, this is excellent buy, or as they say "Best bang for you Buck".
Toshiba has been making Notebooks for a long time and they make quality. I think Sony is too expensive, HP is OK, and so is the dell. The compaq makes quality notebooks too but Toshiba had better value for the money (my last notebook was a Compaq).
I am using to edit occasional digital videos and mainly internet. Toshiba notebook is my desktop replacement. I think if you compare the specs of this notebook with quality desktop machines, there is not a lot of price difference except the processor. But u also don't have to deal with a lot of wires.
And about the Hot Spot? The computer makers try to slam so many things in one notebook and they do pretty good job of it; these are small things. Yes it is slightly warm then the rest of the keyboard are, but no big deal.
Overall excellent notebook.I just bought this and speed and all the features are cool, but the 15 inch screen seems a little dim and blueish compared to my Samsung Synchmaster 151S that I have sitting on my desktop. I looked at the 107 from Toshiba with 14 inch and the screen was much brighter. I'll keep it anyway...it's a good deal otherwise.
ASUS G53JW-3DE Republic of Gamers 3D 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)
First of all I'm used to purchasing gaming laptops, but I don't favor brand names or anything.. I always look for the best deal out there. After owning an MSI-GT627 for more than a year I wanted to upgrade since hardware has evolved a lot since then (what else is new right). With all the 3d craze all around I got curious about 3d enabled laptops (and I had already heard about nvidia 3d vision) and found good reviews for the ASUS G51JX-3DE. So I went ahead and ordered one and I got hooked to 3d gaming!! The laptop was great (performance), form factor was not so great (more uncomfortable than g53) and it came with a faulty hdmi port so I had to return it. I did more research and found out about the ASUS G53JW-3DE which was to release soon (like a couple of months ago when I was still looking). I decided to wait for it and pre-ordered from amazon because if I purchase a laptop online I rather get it from big stores which tend to be more trustworthy (in case of returns etc). Ok so thats the story, now to the good part:This laptop just rocks!!!!
It IS a powerhouse... it will run anything at high settings (without 3d enabled) and it won't even stutter when enabling 3d vision (the G51 kinda stuttered (lagged a bit) in some games like LostPlanet2 when I enabled 3d vision). It is well known that there is a performance hit once you enable 3d vision but if there is one laptop that can put up with that is this one.
Another reason why I decided to wait for this laptop when I did is because it is directx 11 compatible (which means it comes with the latest technology out there). Like I said, spec-wise this computer is just top of the line and it delivers.
Now on to the design .. which I think is nothing short than revolutionary!! (no im not an asus rep trying to sell.. lol) I really mean this. I first had seen the G57 (and its good reviews) but I dont know if you can call that a laptop anymore lol (its huge!). So that was one more reason for waiting for the g53! Here is the thing, the vents on the back of the laptop just work.. gone are the days of putting up with heat issues and burning your hands.. NO MORE! Like I said I'm used to purchasing gaming laptops and this is by far the best design I've seen, it is just incredible how they tackled the heating issues and the stealth fighter concept is cool too!!
If you have researched this computer you prob already know about all its other features (lighted keyb, full keyb (w/numeric), webcam, face recognition, 1usb3.0 etc etc) (which are also great) so I focused on performance and design.
It is also worth mentioning that I have already tried playing a bluray 3d movie on this computer and it worked flawlessly (with 3rd party software).
I know you also want to know if there is anything negative about this computer, well there are some aspects that could be improved but didn't affect my rating for it. But for the record:
Maximum screen resolution is hd only (720p). This is kind of a given at this point for 3d capable screens so there's not much they can do. But I'm sure full hd 3d capable screens will start to show up soon (if they havent). To me this was no biggie cause I've had full hd screens on a 15'' laptop before and I actually lowered the res because everything looked 2 small. I also hook up my computer to my 42'' lcd and I can run everything at FULL-HD if i want to that way too (without 3d until i get a 3d compatible tv).
No ExpressCard port. Yeah I know this sucks.. i was like what??!!! I have an expresscard tv card (that didn't get a lot of use but still). I was considering taking 1 star just because of this but then you have to remember it does come with a USB 3.0 port.. I guess you can't have everything.
AC adapter a little bit on the big side. This is not a big deal really but it adds to the weight and it might be worth mentioning.
And that's all I can think of right now.. if anything I will update the review.. so there you have it.. If you're looking for a 3d gaming capable laptop, this one is top of the line (a little bit pricey but well worth the money).. if 3d is not what you're looking for then look for other variations of the G53 which are cheaper.
I played Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit with the Nvidia 3D glasses, and performance could not have been better. I also played HD recording from my TiVO and it was flawless with no dropped frames. This is definitely a gaming and entertainment machine.
I had one major disappointment, the included Roxio CinePlayer BD software would not play commercial (AACS protected) Blu-Ray Discs. I tried two different commercial Blu-Ray discs and received the message "This application is unable to Activate the security files necessary to begin playback of the copy protected title. Please try again with an Internet connection." Roxio technical support told me that Roxio CinePlayer BD should play commercial Blu-Ray discs but, that the included software was modified by Asus and that I should contact them. I contacted Asus and did not receive a reply. I purchased Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra 3D Mark II for $79.95 and was then able to play commercial Blu-Ray discs. I fail to see the point of having a machine with Blu-Ray reader, that can't play back commercial Blu-Ray discs out of the box.
I was also disappointed by the pre-installed bloatware and advertising icons on the desktop. I would expect to see this in a $300 netbook, but not a premium $1700 laptop. Prepare to spend a couple of hours doing some house cleaning once you get your laptop.
I was happy to see built in bluetooth support (a feature often left out), but wasn't pleased with the lack of support for the 5Ghz WIFI band.
I also had a kink after running windows update, where I lost my hotkeys. A reinstall of the hotkey driver from the ASUS website fixed the problem.

Great laptop.Pros:
Great design (cooling/ergo/keyboard/appearance)
Powerful (Haven't played any system-busters but L4D2 maxed ran great **and in 3D!**)
3D Vision (Quality varies with games but Tomb Raider, HL Source, L4D2, and many others look amazing)
Packaged (Included mouse is great, nice bag, if not a bit small)
Cons:
Slightly big for a 15.6 inch screen (but makes room for that keyboard)
Bloat ware (A few, like hotkeys and powermizer are userful, tons of others are not)
Backup Partition Located to left of OS partition (why not put it to the right so we can wipe it if we want to!?)
Location of I/O seem to be specifically for a left-handed person! (LAN, VGA, and power are on right -mouse side-, CD on left)
Conclusion:
Great laptop. Illuminated keyboard works great in finding keys with 3D glasses on, Hotkey to turn on/off 3D midgame, and an overall solid gaming platform. I would not hesitate to buy again.

This computer is great, a real game experience... one thing is the weight... to much for carrying it for a long time. Other thing is the charger plugin.. is really really a bad design, after 6 months of using it, now is broken, i had to change it!

This laptop also has an integrated, non-user replaceable battery, which could be an issue 2 or 3 years from now when the battery dies (following the apple/ultrabook trend). Price Compared with other laptops with comparable specs the price is very competitive
Processor Very capable processor with Passmark score of 2862 can handle anything you care to throw at it (aside from graphics intensive games, though I personally haven't tested it out).
Looks Brushed aluminum lid and metal accents on the faux speaker grill look classy
Sound Dolby home theater works wonders when you connect a set of headphones
Battery life I got 6.5 hours on the first charge, though I'm still conditioning the battery. It's advertised to get 8+ hours.
Power brick Small, light and compact
OS from the feedback I've been reading on Windows 8, I'm glad I stuck with Windows 7 this time around. Maybe I'll consider Windows 9.

I bought the model shown with one exception, it had 8Gb of ram and Windows 7 Home Premium. It can, and has done everything I needed, and after 30+ years as a systems engineer, I only wanted to be able to use my Microsoft Flight Simulator without any jerks, pauses, strange looking ground and/or clouds, etc.. I must say, I was very impressed with the AMD processor, being an Intel fan. It is a dual core processor, which helps greatly if doing spreadsheets, presentations, flow charting, or as I love, playing with my flight sim since becoming disabled with cancer. I have all the controls, of which plug right into the USB with no problems, the color is great, and of course, since it's a laptop, the speakers leave a little to be desired, but do appear to be better than most. I spilled a softdrink on the keyboard almost immediately after purchasing the laptop, and while the keyboard was toast, I found it very easy and cheap (!) to replace, unlike a Compaq/HP unit. The only issue I have with the device is that the HDMI out that I wanted so badly, it was the deciding factor in purchasing the laptop, died as soon as the warranty ran out, and before my spilling drink on it. No matter what trick I used, and I have extensive training from places such as Microsoft when I worked there, just nothing worked. I also would have liked bluetooth, but you can't expect all the toys to be included at that price it has plenty as it is! I don't turn off my systems either, but do reboot daily, and have seen no problems with over heating at all. I use intensive software that hammers the processor, and all have worked flawlessly. Watching videos sometimes will sputter, but I attribute that to having several applications running in the background and having 3 dogs and 3 cats bouncing all around me.I have also recently ran into a major issue, but it is Microsoft's problem, not ASUS' MS now says the Win7 that came preloaded is not genuine! It came preloaded, and the product key is clearly marked on the bottom, but Microsoft's solution for breaking the activation of the software is for the user to go out and buy another copy!! No FREEKING WAY, BILL GATES!! MS Security Essentials is responsible for destroying the build, it happened after a windows update including an update to essentials, so I blame Microsoft for the problem, and will force them to fix it, one way or another. There is also always Linux, of which loves this laptop, my son bought the same model when I did, and loaded Linux on it instead of Windows. So far, he has seen zero issues. I would also like to see a blueray recordable DVD as an option, and possibly a 2-3Tb hard disk as well, but as it sits, it's a great value and I would do it again as long as I get the extended warranty. Good luck, and I hope no one has the issues I had with Microsoft having an identity crisis.
