Dell Latitude E6510 Notebook PC - Core i7 i7-620M 2.66 GHz - 15.6" - Silver 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM - 320 G

Dell Latitude E6510 Notebook PC - Core i7 i7-620M 2.66 GHz - 15.6' - Silver 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM - 320 GB HDD - DVD-Writer - Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth - Windows 7 ProfessionalI was issued the Dell Latitude E6510 for my job. After six months of use, two of the USB ports stopped working. The technology team at my company replaced the motherboard which resolved this issue. However, two months later, the computer now freezes when I move the Dell even slightly, and then I need to force a shutdown in order to restart and unfreeze the computer. Also, the power cord now has a short, and I need to play with the cord until I get the blue light to indicate 'charging'. I then need to be very careful that the cord doesn't move and short out again; this in addition to, as I mentioned, needing to be careful that the computer doesn't move on my desk and freeze thus causing me to lose whatever information I just entered into the computer. I am currently awaiting the technology team at my company to pick up this computer to check on the freezing issue and replace the power cord. For a laptop at this price point, I would recommend taking a look at the Toshiba Portege or Lenovo IdeaPad. The Dell Inspiration also receives good reviews, but I would not recommend any Dell product after my experience with this product.

Dell supplied me in late 2010 with an E6510 as a warranty replacement for a Latitude D820 which kept having the Nvidia Graphics problem.

Used for business, domestic and charity work for at least 5 hours most days since, it's been lugged over 30000 miles mainly on public transport and has been completely free of faults.

I have not yet had to replace the battery, which I normally find necessary after average 15 months with a new laptop (say 500 charging cycles).

It once dropped 4 feet out of my bag onto a solid floor whilst in hibernation with no problem.

The only change made is that as the E6510 was supplied with spec to correspond with D820, the 2gb RAM supplied has been upgraded by me with 4GB, giving a vast improvement in performance.

I was recently issued this machine (E6510) at work and am very disappointed. I love Dell and have had plenty of great Latitude laptops, but this is not one of them. Consider instead the E6520, which is the dramatically improved newer version of the machine on this page, or the HP Elitebook 8560p. Both the E6520 and Elitebook 8560p are far better designs than this one. Look at the keyboard, fake speakers, port layout, battery life, among other things, and you will see what I mean for yourself.

Samsung NP900X3A-B02 13.3-Inch Notebook - Black

Samsung NP900X3A-B02 13.3-Inch Notebook - BlackI received my Series 9 a couple days ago and I have to say I love it. The size is perfect for traveling and the Core I5 processor delivers more than enough punch for any applications I use. Really, there are many reviews on the Series 9 virtues and my experience with the system overall is in line with everyone else's: it is a great computer.

However, there is one glaring issue that purchasers should not gloss over and that is the weak wireless abilities of this system. Before buying mine I had read the plethora of issues people were having with wireless, but there also appeared to be various fixes for the weak performance. And honestly, I assumed that after more than 6 months on the market any issues would have been resolved. But not so, at least with my system. As of today, I have tried every correction I could find on the Internet (my computer has the Intel wireless module, not the Broadcom so there was no need to replace it) but nothing has corrected the problem. I found a couple reviews where brave users had removed their covers and found that the wireless signal increased substantially, but decreased again when the covers were re-installed. So, based on my experience and what I have read, it appears to be a serious design issue where the Series 9 covers are interfering with the wireless signal, and that is no easy fix.

On the plus side, I have noted that the problem is only with the 2.4 Ghz wireless and NOT the 5.0 Ghz wireless. I use a Netgear Dual band router at home so I was able to try both bands. I normally use the 2.4 Ghz because it has better range than the 5.0 GHz, but even if I am able to get 4 bars on the Samsung with the 2.4 Ghz wireless signal (and that is while standing within 10 feet of the router only), the signal drops out so frequently that it renders the connection useless. Most pages provide the "Page cannot be displayed". To compound this problem, when I am traveling, most wireless access points I encounter are still 2.4 Ghz bands, so I will essentially not be able to use the computer while out of my home, or I will have to install a USB wireless dongle, taking up one of the 2 available USB ports. I should note when I say this that most of my time on a computer is spent on web-apps, so wireless is critical to me. Using a dongle for wireless is not particularly appealing to me.

On a more positive note, I noticed that on the 5 Ghz band, while I may only get 2-3 bars signal, my connection is stable and FAST: I am getting about 22 Mbs transfer through SpeedTest.net, which is as good as any other computer I have on the wireless network. So if you are primarily using a 5 Ghz router, you probably will not have any issues (making the broad-based assumption that your experience is the same as mine).

If you are not surfing the web and just using the Samsung as a work horse, again, I think you will be exceptionally pleased with this computer. Only the wireless is an issue and it should not be underestimated, as I did.

Sorry for the long-winded review, but I felt that it should be clear to potential purchasers that the wireless problem is a big elephant at the dinner table still. Looks like my Samsung will be going back next week and that makes me sad.

Finally, a PC product that's as attractive as anything from Apple. I've had mine for a month and I still get real tactile and visual pleasure from using it, or just looking at it. Samsung has fixed whatever the wifi issue was. Clearly, they should have been more open about the problem and so able to explain that they'd fixed it! Wifi performance is on a par with my old Asus UL30, which was always good.

System performance is definitely hindered by out of date drivers. Run the update (as you should anyway) and both processor and graphics benchmarks jump to where they should be. It's a big difference and explains some odd reviews in which the Samsung was substantially outperformed by competitor products with identical hardware.

Battery life is also better than most professional reviewers have shown. First, the screen is wonderful. It's bright, a lot brighter than the competition, and non-relective. I run mine at around 15%, unless I'm working outside. Nice touches like the backlit keyboard and the adaptive brightness use up juice as well. Now that I've set everything up, I'm getting 5 1/2 hours with a mix of writing (Final Draft) and web browsing, wifi on, bluetooth off.

Build quality is excellent. Despite what you may have read, the whole thing is duralumin, no plastic anywhere. Ports for everything including USB 3.0, although you'll need an adaptor for the HDMI. Like everyone else, I wish they'd put in a standard SD card slot rather than the micro. But you CAN close that flap with a card inside. Push it slightly deeper and then shut it. I bought a 32GB micro card and put it in. Problem solved.

Really not much more to say. The whole thing weighs 2 lbs 14 oz. It's the best laptop I've ever owned, by a long way.

I had ample time to read the reviews of all ultrabooks. I was also aware that many new models will be launched at CES 2012 but I will leave the U.S. in a week's time, so I could not wait. And I am glad I did not. For me this is the perfect laptop and I have had many different models before. Works like a charm, excellent hardware, and absolutely no problems with touchpad nor wifi. I purchased a refurbished unit that came without the Samsung software installed. In this connection I had to call 1-800-SAMSUNG a few times. The speed and competence with which they help is truly outstanding. Most pleased.

I purchased this as a refurbished (by Samsung) product. I had a few qualms and contacted the seller more than once. Each time, the seller was extremely prompt, courteous, and informative. I went ahead and bought the NP900X3A-B02US. From order date to receipt: only 3 days! It was well-packaged and as described. There are a few minor scratches that are barely noticeable (noticeable only because I used a flashlight and scrutinized every inch)...to be expected in a refurbished product.

It's only been a few hours since I've received it. I've updated the drivers and backed up system files (also did a full backup), began personalizing it to my taste, began learning about all of the bells and whistles (still much to learn), connected to my network wirelessly. All went smoothly and very quickly and easily.

I encountered only one minor problem. At first startup and during Windows setup, the system froze. Went immediately to Samsung support website using another computer and initiated a chat with customer support. The problem was resolved before our chat was over, only a few minutes. The CS agent was courteous and knowledgeable about my problem. Very satisfied.

The NP900X3A-B02US is a beautiful tool, very pleasing to the eye, elegant, and a joy to work/play with. So far, I like everything about it. I had a bit of a time locating the USB plug and the other plugs but found them after checking through the installed User Guide. All of the plugs are behind a lid. I like that feature because it should keep out the dust. Never had a computer that covered the plugs before. The laptop is not only beautiful, it is very light. I like that. I like the keyboard and found no problem with it or using it. I like that the keyboard is backlit.

I purchased this particular model because I wanted a fully SSD with 256GB total capacity. I also purchased a 500GB portable external drive to store my system and all backup files. I have a 500GB Cardinal backup drive on which I store all of my data, photo, music, video, and other miscellaneous files. So I'm covered.

I gave this review only 4 stars because I intend to update it after using the laptop for a few weeks. I may then upgrade the review to 5 stars.

I want to again comment on how pleased I am with the seller concerning this purchase.

27 Sep 2012

I've had my S9 for 2 weeks now and I am still extremely happy with it and can't seem to keep my hands or eyes off it. There are many other good-looking laptops out there but until I saw this one, I never saw one more beautifully elegant...and it performs greatly, too! Haven't learned all the features yet but wanted to add a couple of comments.

I've had no issues with the wireless connectivity. Connects on startup, no disconnects, and always 5 bars. The other point I wanted to add is this: I have owned several Samsung products (TV, cell phones, etc.), I trust their products and have never been disappointed, I've had no problems with their customer service on the occasions I needed to contact them. My customer service experience have all been online chats with their technical support agents at their website--no email or phone calls. Maybe that's why my experiences have all been good. The tech support agents were courteous, knowledgeable, spoke English very well, and resolved my problems immediately, usually within minutes.

When searching for an ultrabook, I considered both Sony and the MacBook Air. They both had beautiful products with a lot of great features. However, they both also had one huge negative for me--they are both extremely proprietary. Nearly all after-market accessories and parts for their products (I have had their laptops and a Sony TV) had to be purchased from them and their prices are expensive. I don't like being forced to buy their products. Don't get me wrong; both Sony and Apple have excellent products. I just want the option of buying what I want or need from whomever I want and get the best price for it. So I opted for Samsung with no regret.

****************************

21 Feb 2013

I am still very pleased with this ultrabook. In fact, I am considering the purchase of a 2nd one from the same vendor. I really wanted one in a color other than black but I wouldn't be dissatisfied with another black one. I still think it's beautiful and very well-made. I have had no problems with the wireless connectivity or with bluetooth. My 2 BT mice connect in mere seconds; all I need do is turn it on and they're ready to go.

This laptop runs VERY cool, barely feel any warmth to the hand, no heat rushing out the sides from underneath the laptop. I'm running the SETI program on it nearly 24/7. It does not slow down my use of the unit to surf the web or work on any other program or to play (simple) games. I don't like the fast-moving violent video games. The webcam is excellent though I hardly ever use it. The sound volume is more than satisfactory and has a nicer tone than either of my VAIOs or Gateway laptops have/had. I originally planned on upgrading my RAM to 8GB but, for my use, I find it isn't necessary. The 4GB it came with exceeds my needs.

So, yes, I am seriously considering purchasing another one of these--same model, same vendor, and once again a refurbished unit by Samsung. The price is right $999 plus $16 s/h. If the 2nd unit is as great as this one is, I will be extremely pleased. Why a 2nd one? I always need a spare on hand...just in case. I don't want to use the VAIOs any longer. Maybe I'll donate them to a school or someone handicapped.

I have absolutely no reservations about recommending this refurbished unit from this vendor to anyone for purchase. Samsung has not let me down with any of the products I've purchased from them--cell phones, HDTV, cameras, video cameras, dvd/cd player/recorder. Samsung makes beautiful, quality products and for me, they have provided A++ online customer service support for all of their products. I will never return to Sony or Apple for any of my electronic wants or needs.

I've had this laptop since August/2011. I did not get it on Amazon there was a *great* deal on-line from another supplier and I took a chance on them. This is without a doubt the best laptop I've ever had. Thin, light, fast, with a superb screen. The keyboard and touchpad are top notch. The audio is excellent for such a small machine. No fans going on and off, instant boot, dual-band wireless (2.4 and 5Ghz, which I wasn't even aware of when I purchased it...) make this thing amazing. Highly recommended.

HP ENVY 14-2020NR 14.5-Inch Notebook (Silver)

HP ENVY 14-2020NR 14.5-Inch NotebookAfter using this laptop for 2 weeks, I am totaly satisfied with it. The new hp envy sb version has all aluminum chassis and feels vry solid. Windows boots up in 18 seconds. Running program as fast as average desktop. Here is some feedback:

The screen: some one may complain this laptop never comes with radiance display anymore. Actually, the bright view screen is great, and it's even brighter and has more vibrate color than my wife's macbook pro.

The touchpad: This sandy bridge refresh version has a nearly as good as macbook touchpad. Multigesture, two finger scroll and pinch zoom all work smoothly. Just remember don't update the synaptics drive. New driver doesn't support double-tab to turn off touchpad feature.

Battery life: If you set the brightness to 60%, and just normal use, the out of box battery lasts about 5 hours. If you turn off the bluetooth and wifi, battery should last even longer.

Finally the noise: Normal using won't produce much noise. You need to put your ear at the air vents to hear it. It does has some noise when playing games, but tolerable.

Purchased from amazon, and happy to deal with them.

The Envy 14 has a lot going for it. It's a great size, has a backlit keyboard that's a pleasure to type on, and is built very well. Further, HP has released a BIOS update to address the issue of 3D applications and games not working properly with AMD's automatic graphic switching. The solution essentially reverts back to manual switching where the user has control of which graphics processing unit (GPU) he or she wants to use. It can also be set up to run on the high-performance AMD Radeon dedicated GPU (dGPU) when the machine is plugged in and switch over to the power-saving Intel integrated GPU (iGPU) when running on battery. This is basically how graphic switching works on older Envy 14 notebooks (model number 14-1xxx).

Regrettably, I had to send this notebook back for a pair of deal-breaking issues. First and foremost, the trackpad (or clickpad as it's dubbed by HP and part supplier Synaptics), is awful. HP has tried to emulate the Apple MacBook Pro in this area, and having previously owned a MBP, the Envy fails miserably. After trying many different drivers and settings, I simply could not get the trackpad to perform and respond smoothly and predictably. The final annoyance is the orange light that activates whenever you disable the pad, either on its own or by plugging in a USB mouse.

The second major problem is the screen itself. The resolution of 1366x768 isn't a huge issue for me, but at one point, HP did offer the Envy 14 with a high-resolution (1600x900) "Radiance" display that was of excellent quality and color reproduction. The screen in the current model, though not the worst I've ever seen, is sub-standard for something that's marketed as a premium product. Even with a lot of tweaking, the colors are pretty dull. It's also more reflective than other glossy notebooks I've seen and used, which makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to use outside.

In the end, a couple missteps in overall execution make it a less-than-ideal choice for my use.

Buy HP ENVY 14-2020NR 14.5-Inch Notebook (Silver) Now

I recently purchased 4 of these laptops for our business. We work with 3D CAD drawings. This laptop has no problem running the 3d CAD programs. The display brightness is bright for the user. The bottom of the laptop stays cool. I like the lights on the keyboard helps me see the keys in low lit areas. I also like the usb port on the power adapter because i can charge my ipad with it (ipad cord isn't long enough to make to the outlet). I haven't had much time to test the sound out.

Dislike:

One of the laptop's underscore key doesn't work you have to press it 10 times to get it to type once. Screen viewing angle not the greatest.

Overall I would recommend this laptop to anyone.

EDIT:

RUN SAVE YOURSELF. THE SCREEN ON ALL FOUR LAPTOPS WE BOUGHT GOT SCRATCHED BY THE LIP AROUND THE KEYBOARD. ONE LAPTOP THE SOUND CRAPPED OUT AND NOW SOUNDS LIKE DONALD PLEASENCE in the movie GROUND ZERO. THREE OF THE LAPTOPS HAVE A KEY THAT DOESN'T WORK UNLESS POUNDED ON. HP TOLD ME I COULD SEND THEM BACK AND HAVE THE SCREENS REPLACED,BUT IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT TWO WEEKS WELL I LIVE OUTSIDE THE US BESIDE I NEED MY LAPTOP EVERYDAY FOR WORK.

CONCLUSION: ITS NOT A KEEPER

EDIT 2:

Wireless networking passed away on one of the laptops...can't wait to see whats next

I bought this laptop for $799 end of Oct 2011 as a general purpose computer for work and home use. So far, i have been quite satisfied with it.

Pros

1. solid metalic construction

2. backlit key pads is a big plus.

3. solid performing switchable 1G graphic card.

4. i5 processor is more than adequate for general home and work computing.

5. no bloat ware to deal with

Cons

1. Screen is not the highest resolution

2. keypads are fine, but could use a little more tactile feedback.

3. the fan motor is quiet, but there is a constant noise. compared to HP's own D6V, this is loud.

4. Not the most attractive laptop.

5. laptop is a bit heavy

6. battery life is only acceptable

7. no finger print reader

8. ram is a bit low at 4G

Overall, it's not a perfect laptop for the money, but definitely a good total package. you will not be able to play the latest action video games, but for general home/work use, it provides more than adequate power. The fan noise can be a bit irritating, but i guess that comes with a performace chip in a small package.

If you can get this laptop on sale at a good price, then it is definitively a great buy.

HP Envy dv4-5220us 14-Inch Laptop

HP Envy dv4-5220us 14-Inch LaptopMy old toshiba protege(r830) died and I recieved my money back from squaretrade.

I had a hp ultrabook envy4 but it wasn't user upgradeable. I returned it and I recieved this inside.

This is my 1st HP laptop and so far the quality is great.

1) Upgradeable to 16gb ram(User Serviceable). This is great for virtual machine testing.

2) User serviceable bays for battery and hard drive.

3) Fast processor and speedy performance.

4) Great screen and the webcam works well.

5) Nice keyboard with good feedback.

Cons:

1) Heavy. at 4.78 lbs. My toshiba was 3.8lbs

2) I wish I didn't have the dvd drive which adds to the weight.

3) Touchpad always gets dirty really easy.

I have been using this laptop for 1-2 month now on daily basis, got it right before school started.

my upgrades:

4GB RAM

460 7200RPM Harddrive

50GB SSD

core i5 2nd gen turbo boost

Nvidia Geforce 630 1GB

I try to take care of by turning it off every 1-2 days, and use high security. The laptop still turns on and off quickly. I have had several updates, and right now it seems I am not guaranteed to have the laptop to upgrade to windows 8.

Pro: small, light weight, quiet, and doesn't get heat up. It has a beautiful smooth look to it. Has a pretty loud speaker.

Cons: I guess it's pretty expected from customization. A lot of the common features easily crash. I can barely look at pictures with this laptop.

The Nvidia Geforce 420M 1GB doesn't seem to do anything more compare to my old Toshiba with no dedicated graphics card.

What annoys me the most is the keyboard. the mouse is constantly interfering with what I type. Even now, whenever my hand hoovers over the mouse pad, the typing tool gets navigated to a different location, so I have to keep putting it back to where I am typing (if you have to write a lot, this keypad will annoy the heck out of you). I am in pharmacy school, and it requires fast note taking in class, it is really annoying when the mouse goes all over the places which I have to make the mouse to come back to the right place and miss many important things professors talk about. One trick I now use is to just turn off the mouse pad, however that still causes inconvenience.

Another thing that bother's me is the up and down arrow key. The two of them are the size of 1 key, and it's ridiculously hard to get use to (which I still haven't). The sound bottom doesn't work sometimes no matter how you try to press the volume up/down, though I can live with that.

The laptop doesn't fold that far flat, so when I try to play bass, I'd have to bent down a lot to see the screen.

The battery life has decreased significantly it seems since the time of purchase. Even though I try to use the battery life whenever I can and fully charge it before unplugging. It has froze on my once, which I am not so happy about considered it is only 1 month old.

6-22-2013 update:

The battery completely died on me in less than a year, it shows that it has 0% and does not charge. So I performed a diagnosis on "HP Support Assistant" for the battery and got an error code. Then I made a call to 800-HP invent (or 800-474-6836), fortunately the laptop is still under warranty, I was able to get a free battery ($120 worth) to be shipped to me soon.

I bought this computer for my college classes, and it has exceeded my expectations. Powers on and off quickly, the sound and video quality are great, there's lots of space for my college assignments and programs, and the graphics card is good enough to run the games I enjoy with ease. The battery life fluctuates between 5 and 7 hours, but that's a small complaint. All things considered,I am thoroughly satisfied with the product, and will definitely buy another HP computer in the future.

Purchased this little computer at the end of December 2012 for a fantastic price at Amazon. Smooth transaction and speedy delivery. Had it charging up and using it straight from the box. No issues, very quiet and stays extremely cool even if on for long periods of time. Not heavy, weighs exactly 5 pounds on the bathroom scale. I had a small Acer netbook prior to this and my Envy is just as portable and quite attractive as well. It does come with a CD burner which was not listed in the product details. Needed to call Amazon to confirm this. The keys feel fine to me, as there was one review that stated the opposite. It is fast, the screen displays bright and clear graphics. Windows 8 takes a while to get used to but I like it so far, especially the "app" format. All kinds of ports (3 USB) and card reader. Holds a charge for a very long time. Been off the charger all day and still has 7+ hours on it. I searched for a long time to find a lightweight computer with a decent speed and memory that could be my workhorse, as I am using this mainly for business. This little gem has it all! Totally satisfied!!

ASUS UL80Vt- A2 14-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Silver)

ASUS UL80Vt- A2 14-Inch Thin and Light LaptopI needed to get a laptop to take with me before going on an out-of-state summer internship. I did not want a "desktop replacement" type laptop since I already have a very powerful gaming desktop here at home.

After much searching and deliberation, I decided to get the Asus UL80VT. My reasons were:

1) Asus reliability and reputation: I've always had good luck with Asus motherboards for the PCs Ive build for friends and several family members; plus Asus laptops are consistantly more reliable than other brands ([Amazon deleted the link I had here, go to your search engine of choice and look for "Asus laptop reliability" and see what I'm talking about])

2) Battery Life: claimed to be 11.5 hours. Real-world resutls are about 7-9 hours unplugged. This time is for light surfing and word processing, and allowing the Asus "Battery Saver" power profile to dim the screen, etc. You'll get much less times using discrete graphics, bright screen, DVD drive, etc.

3) Powerful, battery-sipping Intel Core2Duo U7300 1.3 GHz processor: this low-voltage processor is plenty powerful enough for everyday tasks, light gaming, watching HD online videos, etc. Asus is even kind enough to include a feature which automatically overclocks the processor when on AC power and your games demand extra "oomph"!

4) Came with Windows 7 pre-installed: Windows 7 is simply the best operating system Microsoft has ever made, period.

5) Size/weight perfect for me: I carry this laptop to class every day in a Case Logic ENS-14 14.1-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black) in my backpack. At 4.8 lbs (plus 0.8 lbs for the AC adapter = 5.6 lbs total), this is about the same weight as one of my textbooks, and infinitely more useful!

6)Chiclet keyboard: I love the spaced-out keys, great for typing, easy to adapt to from a full-size keyboard. (No full-size number pad, but that's to be expected in laptops this size. Get a 15.6" screen laptop if you need that)

7) Fit/Finish good for the price: I love the aluminum top of this laptop, much less smudgy than the black one. The screen bezel is still black on the inside, which does show fingerprints, but that area doesn't get touched very often.

7) Has an optical drive: I looked into 13.3" laptops, but they typically don't have DVD drives, which is a nice feature to have for watching movies on a plane trip, installing software, etc.

Drawbacks:

1) Glossy screen is very shiny, I have a custom screen protector for this I bought online at which cuts down on most of the glare too.

2) Right wrist rest sqeaks/clicks a little when you put your wrist on it. This is not very loud and I don't anticipate being a problem. I knew this was an issue with this model beforehand. Don't be surprised if it happens to you, although yours could be louder/squeak more, etc.

Other thoughts:

* Some people have complained about the track pad buttons being under one solid piece of plastic. This doesn't really bother me at all. It is not difficult to press the left or right side. The left 1/3 is the left click, the right 1/3 is the right click. Only the middle 1/3 of the plastic is unresponsive as it is solid underneath. I should note that I am using the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging], so to be honest, I am not using the trackpad very often.

*People have also complained about the stickers present on the inside of the laptop. These peel off easily and leave no residue, in my experience. Those are mostly put there so people who don't know any better can know what's inside their laptop.

*Finally, people have complained about the bloatware/junk software present installed on this computer. True, these programs are very annoying. But one could understand why a manufacturer would agree to install these trial programs and come-ons: higher profits. If you're so inclined, take 5 minutes to uninstall the stuff you don't want, this is not a difficult process.

* People ask what kind of computer this is all the time! Classmates/coworkers/friends who haven't seen Asus laptops (too many Dells and HP's out there!) will ask where you got this laptop :)

* I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus program, and have had 0 issues so far. I highly recommend it. (Free download)

Summary: Overall I would say the build quality of this Asus is about an 8.5/10. I still rate this as 5 stars though because the minor build quality issues are not enough to detract from the overall value of this fast, efficient, and powerful laptop.

Had this laptop for a week now and I am thoroughly impressed. I've installed a couple ASUS motherboards on desktops and was always really happy with their performance. This is the first ASUS laptop I've owned/used, and so far it has lived up to the standards I come to expect from them.

I love the 14" screen size/overall laptop size, fast CPU/RAM speed, switchable graphics (very cool, helps conserve quite a bit of battery when unplugged, but still has some muscle to game when needed.) Battery life is amazing for this computer's size and power, I'm getting 8-9 hours with average surfing. Also, I am so far liking Windows 7, after trying Vista and absolutely hating it, it seems like they got it right this time.

Cons seriously take these with a grain of salt, I didn't rate the laptop 5 stars for nothing. The touchpad takes a little getting used to, it's a bit sticky at first but once you get some skin oil on there it works fine. I have had no trouble with the multitouch features others have complained about, in fact it's a pretty cool feature of this touchpad. The mouse button on the touch pad does suck, it's a one-piece, rocker button and it squeaks when I press it (BTW other than that squeak issue on the touchpad, it seems that ASUS has really improved their build quality from previous reviews, I have noticed no other poor build quality-related issues with this laptop.) The LCD screen quality is definitely lacking, the reflections can get bad when you've got a backlight behind you and the poor black contrast makes it look a bit washed out when compared to other LCDs. Finally, the speakers are pretty terrible, but hey, they work which is an infinite improvement from my old laptop...

Overall, excellent laptop. If you are looking for the perfect mix of power and portability, you've found it.

Buy ASUS UL80Vt- A2 14-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Silver) Now

I based my purchase off all the good reviews I read about the system. Now, I've had it for 8 months, and have had problems for at least 6 months. Many of the ASUS start-up files crash at system start up. Creating a recovery CD will cause a crash too. Also, system restore attempts often fail. I wish I'd read about all this 8 months ago.

The best part about this laptop is that there is dual operating system built-in where there's a Windows based system button and a Linux based button, so when the windows system crashed (daily) I could still check my email in the reliable Linux system. There was a period of time when I just didn't power down at all to avoid the startup issues.

Another good thing is if you call customer service you won't wait 30 minutes to talk to a person. They're good about that. Now, whether they actually fix your problem is an issue that remains to be seen in my case.

The touchpad and keyboard design has been a big problem as well. Even when I'm typing very carefully the mouse will jump around to other text boxes. This is a big problem when filling out any kind of form on the internet as well as typing a Word document. I've opted for a external mouse and have disabled the touchpad altogether.

I don't believe today's laptops are made to last, but I do think you can find a better one that will work as expected for a reasonable amount of time. I would not choose this model/brand again.

****UPDATE*****

I sent this laptop back within the 1-year warranty to be repaired by ASUS. It worked normally for 1/2 a day, and went right back to the previous issues of crashing. I truly believe their fix was merely to re-format the computer only. I could have done that myself. I declined to send it back again because I do not believe they'll resolve the issue nor do I have the time. ASUS has not updated ANY of the drivers the computer needs to function properly. I guess ASUS ripped me off. $700 out of my pockets for a bad product.

This is the third ASUS we've added to our stable and am very happy with what we've received from the company. You get a very high quality laptop without paying the premium that others charge.

a) Build Quality 10/10 -was very nervous about the build quality given some of the previous reviews. ASUS LISTENED. This is better than the Sony VAIO (bought less than a year ago) that we just recycled, the Dell I have from work and the HP that we bought a few months ago. Everything is tight.

b) Keyboard 9/10 -I actually care about how the keyboard feels when typing as I learned how to type of a manual, then selectric many years ago. This keyboard is almost on par with what you can get from Lenovo. And, no, there is no flex that I can feel at this point. I save 10/10 for Lenovo

c) Screen 10/10 -One of the most clear screens that I've seen. Have watched HD movies and also have manipulated images using Adobe Photoshop. Cannot be beat.

d) Video Card 9/10 -Hybrid Nvidia/Intel MHD is awesome. Cutting to the intel chip with battery is seamless and you really cannot tell that you're in powersaving mode. Only reason why not a 10/10 is because the Nvidia chip only has 512Meg on the GBU... Should be 1 Gig.

e) Case -10/10 -as stated in build quality... this looks awesome. Had to really work to figure out which panel was aluminum and which was plastic.

f) Hard Drive -5/10. I was a bit surprised that the HDD was only a 5400 rpm drive. I immediately created an image, replaced with a 7200 rpm drive and reloaded. I have found the 7200 doesn't seem to hurt battery life and does improve performance a bit. Given the prices of HDD's today, there should be no reason for not having a 7200 rpm.

g) RAM -DDR3. Need I say more?

h) CPU -Intel. Need I say more?

i) Battery life 10/10. I have done quite a bit with numerous laptops to try to extend battery life. I don't like having to drag around power cords when visiting clients. I am able to get almost 8 hours in battery saving mode.

j) Bloatware -ASUS seems to be increasing the amount of bloatware they install on their laptops. I just unloaded everything that said ASUS and the laptop still works very well... Some of the 'smart keys' don't work, but that doesn't bother me. The trade off between quick boots and flicking keys to change power modes is worth it to me.

I wouldn't look much further if you're looking for a laptop that can be lugged around all day. The secret for a 14" screen is the laptop isn't much bigger than a 13.3" case, but feels as if you're looking at a much larger screen.

Want ASUS UL80Vt- A2 14-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Silver) Discount?

I received my silver asus ul80vt laptop today, and I absolutely love it! This is my first review, but I thought it was necessary because it was such a great deal! In the price range, (I bought it for around $750) this was top of the line. The battery life is incredible, it was delivered in excellent condition, and best of all it's lightweight! The screen is, in my opinion, of great quality. The viewing angles are not nearly as bad as some of the reviews I read, and the color is awesome! Also, it's the perfect size. It's small, but big enough so that you don't have to squint! It's about the size of a hard back textbook, but much thinner. The processor is great, and the hard drive is adequate. Internet connection works great, and the camera is a lot better quality than I was expecting. I was expecting to have trouble with the trackpad, but so far it seems normal to me. The only thing I noticed is that I tend to move the mouse with the base of my hand while typing on occasion, but that's nothing major. I have heard that asus makes the motherboards for mac computers, and while I considered splurging for a macbook pro, I couldn't justify the cost difference. I could buy TWO of these for the price of a mac and it has more features!

Lenovo Thinkpad R61i Core 2 Duo T2370 1GB/80GB

Lenovo Thinkpad R61i Core 2 Duo T2370 1GB/80GBPlenty fast and does everything I need it too. Battery needs recharge a little more often than I would like, but I am too cheap to buy a bigger battery. Hooray! it came with Windows XP professional instead of that Gawd-awful Windows Vista. No negative issues with it yet.

The product itself is ok, but I ordered the Pentium Core 2 Duo R61i, but was instead delivered a Celeron processor in model R61. I originally had the R61i, Pentium Core 2 Duo & it was much, much faster thatn the one they delivered.

Very disappointing, but since I need the computer for work & it was already delivered latewr than they promised I can't afford to send it back & wait for a new one (they did credit the shipping cost as compensation for missing the original delivery date though).

I am typing this review on the laptop I gave my wife after getting this laptop for myself off of Lenovo's web site. I started out with a very good opinion and past experience with the older IBM ThinkPad laptops that I used at work. I should have known something was wrong when Lenovo told me it would take longer than a month to get the computer to me. When I called them to find out why, I did not get a real explanation (I do not remember, since it was over a year ago). I asked them if I found a computer as good in Best Buy before they shipped it, could I cancel my order. Low and behold, the computer was at my doorstep in a few days after that. Unfortunately, I got one with Vista and the updated sound drivers kept conflicting with the sound card. I took it to Geek Squad (the first time in my life) and they fixed it by back-rev'ing it to a version of the driver which would work. Finally, only four months after the manufacturer's warranty expired, it started freezing up 15 minutes to an hour after start up. I have eliminated every other possible cause except hardware. After talking with Lenovo support, my only options now are paying premium for an extended warranty or stare down paying another $200-300 just to get my computer to work for an undetermined period of time.

Please learn from my pain. Lenovo's are garbage to promote extended warranty scams. This Chinese-owned company does not stand behind its product for good reasons. Even if the other computers are made in China as well, at least make sure they are not owned by a Chinese company (this is the only thing I can figure out).

HP Pavilion dm4-3170se 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

HP Pavilion dm4-3170se 14-Inch LaptopCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program About 2 years ago I was looking for an ultra portable Windows laptop with this wish list (in order of importance):

Portability I needed it to come with me at a moment's notice

Computing muscle as a software architect and teacher, it was important that the laptop keep up with my demands

Large screen I figured 13.3" @ 1366x768 was the absolute minimum for my needs

Usable touch pad as I rely exclusively on the built-in touch pad

Extended battery life at least 4 hours.

After a lot of research, and a bad experience with a Toshiba T135-S1310, I settled on the Lenovo Ideapad U-450P, and raved about it here on Amazon. Unfortunately, the devil's bargain was to trade off computing muscle (it used Intel's CULV SU7300) in return for portability and battery life.

Fast forward 2 years, and I can finally check off "all of the above" with the DM4!

1. At just over 4 lbs, this is truly portable.

2. Its 3rd generation i5 chip makes it capable of chewing through serious business software.

3. Its 14" screen @ 1600x900 resolution is generously large, with a gorgeous reflection-free matte finish.

4. Its touch pad is sensitive and accurate.

5. Decent battery life (Rated: 7.5 hours. Actual, under normal operation, is about 5 hours.)

Other key features?

#############

1. Cold to running in an amazing 30 seconds! Up from standby in under 5 seconds! (Really.)

2. Great computing horsepower for tasks such as running MS Office 2010, or Adobe's LR4/PSE. Again, the startup time with these applications is simply amazing.

3. Awesome ergonomics. Its display is clean and bright, text is crisp and readable (even at its native resolution), its keyboard is firm and responsive (lets me touch type without fatigue), its touchpad is very usable, its wrist rest is surprisingly comfortable, and the red keyboard backlight is very non distracting.

4. Very respectable Windows Experience Index numbers (out of a max possible of 7.9):

[CPU: 7.1 | RAM: 7.5 | Graphics: 5.4 | Gaming Graphics: 6.4 | Hard Disk: 5.9]

5. Cool operation. After 4 hours of use, it had only heated up on par with my far less powerful Lenovo.

6. Quiet operation. You can barely hear its fan, allowing it to be used to drive videos to a TV without distraction. (It supports wireless video using Widi.)

7. Less bloatware than most. Other than a trial Norton, a trial MS Office, and a few web redirect icons, most are well intentioned HP utilities that might be considered a value add. Especially noteworthy is HP's Support Assistant it automatically processed even a BIOS update.

8. Its 2x2 300 Mbps 2.4Ghz single band wireless b/g/n card also speeds up browsing. I watched a 2 hour streaming HD video without a hiccup.

9. I prefer the convenience of its integrated DVD+RW drive. However, it does not support Bluray, which is typical of this class of machines.

Any annoyances?

############

Yes. Fortunately they were minor.

1. The function keys (F1-F12) default to action mode (e.g., modify brightness). This prevents their use as standard function keys, and also makes it easy to disable the wifi card by accidentally hitting F12. Fortunately, this is fixable in the BIOS. This computer boots so quickly that I couldn't read the initial instructions to get into the BIOS. (Press Esc while it is starting up.)

2. The touchpad is slightly off center with respect to the space bar, increasing travel distance for right clicks.

3. Pet peeve: Why does no one include recovery discs with their machines?

4. The omnipresent Beats branding is borderline narcissistic (even the B key is a tiny logo).

Who is this for?

###########

There is a premium here for the ability to run multiple simultaneous heavy duty business applications in a light package.

However, it is overkill if your needs are less strenuous and you don't need the future proofing that it provides. Its lack of discrete graphics also leaves it far from being a gaming powerhouse. It's battery might also disappoint road warriors who need to power through a full day.

What is the competition like?

####################

Other contenders at this price point include the Dell Inspiron 14Z, Toshiba's U845, Lenovo's U410, and HP's own Envy line.

Unfortunately, they compromise on some or all of the DM4's unique features: providing a less powerful processor (the ultra low voltage i5-3317u), a lower screen resolution (1366x768), a missing integrated optical drive, a non-backlit keyboard (blech), no hard disk shock protection, a missing fingerprint reader, less RAM, and of course, no Beats Audio.

Conclusion:

########

I rated this DM4 at 5 stars due to the elegance and excellence of this model's design.

That said, I have had poor experiences with the longevity of HP machines in the past, particularly due to over-heating. Hopefully their new CoolSense technology will prevent heat issues with the DM4. Only time will tell how my love affair works out, but at the end of my first week with this unit, I'm duly impressed.

Happy Computing!

~Damodar

Update Aug 5, 2012:

###############

1. HP CoolSense does not obviate the need for a good laptop cooling pad. While the DM4 keeps its cool under normal operation, it needs help with heat dissipation with abnormally heavy duty processing (e.g., generating 1:1 previews in LR4 for 1000+ images from a recent event shoot.)

2. The button to open the optical tray can be a bit hard to activate due to the button's raised profile and some play in the tray door.

Update Sep 17, 2012:

################

I'm still just as impressed with this machine and its boot times. I often reach for it instead of my iPad, even for simple tasks.

The good: the touch pad has worked flawlessly with no negative experiences to report.

The bad: the fingerprint reader has worked itself loose, and requires regular pushing back into position. This is my first encounter with poor product design with the DM4.

I have had my Beats Edition HP for about six months now. For the most part I have been very pleased with it. It's a nice compromise between thinner, newer 'Ultrabook' style computers and the older behemoths that are still around.

Pros:

The backlit keyboard is great and a must since everything is black.

Better than average audio without external speakers.

Having a built in optical drive.

Cosmetics it's unique looking.

Low to non existent fan noise very much appreciated.

Fast boot up and decent battery life.

Cons:

Had to have my touchpad replaced under warranty.

Should have been designed with a fixed optical drive. Opening the tray is a hassle.

Easily Shows fingerpints from handling.

Hinges on case seem a little flimsy and you worry if they will last.

Wish it was a little thinner and a little lighter.

Battery life is really closer to about 4 hours than what is claimed.

Offshore tech support, though they were fine when my touchpad stopped working.

I would highy recommend this model.

ADDENDUM: How ironic! I just gave this laptop a 4 star rating this morning from my MacBook Air and then opened my HP to use it and much to my surprise it had a large black blotch in the screen. I never dropped it. I didn't close it with anything in between it. I did NOTHING out of the ordinary I simply plugged it in last night to recharge it and then reopened it this afternoon to use it again.

Then I called HP tech support and this time, unlike the trackpad needing replaced, it has been a complete nightmare. All of these so called support people are in India to begin with. First off they have no method to pull up your records by your phone number. Why? Instead they make you take the battery out and look up your serial and model numbers. Ok, fair enough, I can do this once. Then the first technician told me they would send someone over to look at the screen and replace it at their cost but that I would have to pay for the technician's visit at a cost of $139. Then the call went dead. So I called back and of course had to go through the entire process again. This person said the same thing and I said it was unacceptable that I would have to pay for a service call when I did nothing wrong and that I'd rather just send it back in yet again and let them fix it. At that point I was told they would have to transfer my call to another department that would give me my options in getting it fixed, which led me to believe that I would be transferred back to the USA to finalize everything. Nope. Another call to India or Pakistan or wherever they source their support and guess what? I have to give them ALL the info yet again for the third time and start at square one. This time they take all the info down and the tech tells me he would have to transfer me to his supervisor to let me know how the repairs would be handled. A lady comes on the line who says she's level two support (still offshore) and she informs me that screen issues are not covered by warranty and I would have to pay $349 to get it fixed!?! I told her that the first two techs had told me $139 to send a repair tech to my place and that HP would pay for the screen. She said she knew nothing about that or who told me that and assured me it would cost me $349 to fix. Her attitude was if it's a screen problem we don't cover it and there is no such thing as a defective screen. I told her that was unacceptable as it would HAVE to be a defective screen, given how it went bad on its own without any wrong doing or accident on my part. At that point she said I can assure you it was not defective and if you want it fixed you will have to call back and spend $349 to fix it! This is a six month old computer folks and all I did was open it to use it and was confronted with the black blotch on the screen. NEVER AGAIN with HP! NEVER AGAIN. And to think I actually recommended this!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program All in all, we are very pleased with this laptop. My wife's vision is getting a little worse as she is getting older and is buying reading glasses in order to see clearly. However, this laptop features red backlit keys that are so easy to read that she has no need for them while working on Girl Scouts, etc.

All of the computer specs are clearly labeled in the product description above (i5 processor, 500 GB hard drive, etc.), so all that's really left to discuss is how well this laptop operates. In a word, fast. Even for my Alienware i7 quad core, this laptop takes its run for the money to startup and shut down VERY quickly and that is after some fairly heavy browsing, installation of Microsoft Office 2010, a formal installation of Norton Internet Security 2012, etc. With all the little, obsequious add-ons that proliferate just about every web page these days, this laptop takes it all in stride and works quite well. Even with the 5400 rpm drive (a disappointment, but understandable in terms of keeping power/heat low), it is quite responsive and there is no noticeable lag in any of the applications that we open.

Battery life is impressive, although I imagine that you are going to be running at a very lowly lit screen and downgraded video performance to get the full 7.5 hours of battery life advertised. With more typical settings, the battery life still shows an excess of 5 hours which is plenty good for our use.

Even if you don't have Microsoft Office 2010 (not included--we have our own license), you can still view your e-mail via the embedded Windows Live Mail feature. Although not as full-featured as Outlook (i.e., calendar, etc.), it will allow you to send/receive e-mail without additional expense. The laptop also does come with a free 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2012, but we went ahead and picked up the software ourselves anyway.

The laptop does feature a pinhole "HD" camera that will allow you to Skype and although it's not mind-blowingly great image quality in low light (it's a pinhole, mind you), it serves its function quite well without need for an additional peripheral. Built-in speakers work well enough to communicate, although there is a provided headphone jack for your use.

My wife has already tried the fingerprint security software that's on the keyboard and HP walks you through the instructions in its use. It also appears to work well and my attempts at entering passwords on web sites using the fingerprint scanner met with failure; it would only recognize hers, as designed. However, I'm just as happy using Norton Internet Security to store and regulate my passwords just as well--to each their own.

Now as for "Beats"...well, I did put it through the gamut of songs. I have over 15,000 songs in my collection, so although I don't claim to be an audiophile, I can say that I have developed a certain acoustical palate over the years. I don't own a pair of "Beats" headphones, but I did have my Bose AEs so I figured that if I compared the audio from my own Alienware against the laptop then I was still doing an apple to apple comparison. My Alienware has an integrated 7.1 THX-certified sound system. To be perfectly honest, I could not discern a difference between the HP and the Alienware. I used Deadmau5's "I Remember", Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", Nickelback's "This Is War" and "Photograph", and Lush's wall-of-sound "Sweetness And Light"...and I am hard pressed to tell you, if blindfolded, that there is any difference. So both computers sound AMAZING to me, but I don't think that the "Beats"-factor is really anything to scream about.

What is even more curious has to be HP's choice in the target demographic. Although the "Beats" logo is destined to draw in the younger crowd (hell, look at the Olympics just about every other athlete is wearing their headphones prior to a swim match and recent arrivals of exchange students in our community reveals that they are popular with teens in Europe as well), the HP embedded software still seems to be targeted to an older demographic, offering chances to automate a bunch of settings. Most young people that I know are fully capable of maintaining their own computer and I found the embedded HP software curious as an add-on. People like my mother-in-law would probably deeply appreciate letting HP check updates, etc., for them, but for a tech-savvy person like myself, I wish that I could rid myself of it. However, it does appear to be embedded into the OS architecture itself, so no dice. The good news, however, is that it doesn't appear to detract from the overall performance of the PC itself (as previous HP iterations in the past USED to drag their systems down), so I just pretend it's not there.

The provided disc player will allow you to burn DVDs and play Blu-Rays on the 1600x900 resolution screen. It won't defeat a high-end HDTV, but the picture quality is still quite good and works well for its intended purpose. A 14" screen may not seem large, but it's plenty big when it's right in front of you.

Other features include a built-in Wifi receiver which connected to our Netgear N900 with ease and we had the laptop sharing our Homegroup network to facilitate file sharing between our PCs at home. It's quite a standard feature these days, but it's one that we still liked to mention that it worked well.

We are pretty happy with the laptop and apart from the curious addition as "beats" as a potential marketing gimmick, we highly recommend it.

I purchased this laptop directly from HP (so you will not see a Amazon Verified purchase tag for this review). This is a very nice laptop overall. The matte screen is quite bright and has a great resolution unlike most other laptops of this class in the market. The weight is also just right. Its not ultrabook light but its not very far off compared to all the extras you get. The Hybrid drive enables the laptop to boot up very quickly but I do not understand why HP had to downgrade to a 5400RPM drive when the older generation DM4-3090se used a 7200RPM drive. Also, it would have been better to put in 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB.. though the RAM in this model is DDR3 1600 MHz (which is an improvement over the DDR3 1333MHz used in previous gen). The HP sleeve they give is a nice touch but it is pretty basic you would still need to buy a proper sleeve. One issue I do have with HP is the excessive amount of HP software that they just cram in most of it is not really useful at all. There are like dozens of softwares installed most of which don't really do much. It would be nice if HP would just install one software suite which would have all essential things instead of having a different software and service running for each of them.

I also recommend the "Case Logic VNA214 14.1-Inch Laptop Attache" bag for this laptop which is a perfect case for this laptop.

Want HP Pavilion dm4-3170se 14-Inch Laptop (Black) Discount?

I've been using my HP Pavilion dm4-3170se for one month at home and in libraries in other states while traveling with no problems at all.

Pros:

14 inches is a very convenient laptop size for casual internet use at home and on the road.

The 1600 by 900 resolution screen is easy on the eyes for hours of reading ebooks. Yes, all my ebooks are on my PC's and available when I travel.

The dm4-3170se has a solid, dense feel of quality. Time will tell of course, but that's how it feels to me. It's not a lightweight for it's size and there's no flex when I handle it.

I was doubtful that a red backlit keyboard would work for me, but after using it extensively for a month now, I have to admit that the red backlit keyboard works as well as my white backlit keyboards on my other laptops. Doesn't work for my wife though. She can't see red very well so be advised.

The 32mb SS cache combined with the 500mb hard drive is a nice combination for casual internet use. W7 comes up in about 30 seconds and is ready to use. Amazing! The dm4-3170 is significantly faster on startup, waking up from sleep and loading programs like iTunes than my very expensive XPS M1730 gaming laptop with two hard drives in a Raid 0 configuration. I attribute this to the SS cache drive more than anything else. Looks like it's getting time to replace the hard drives in my XPS M1730 with SS drives.

And then there's the Beats Audio. When considering purchasing the dm4-3170se I dismissed the remarks about the quality of the audio as just hype. It isn't. The first music video I listened to was Promise by Santos and Usher on Vevo. Having listened to this song many times on my XPS M1730, I was actually startled to hear it on the dm4-3170se. What a difference. Using the same $70 headphones I've been using for years I heard instruments I'd never heard before. Slumber My Darling by Alison Krauss in my iTunes library was just beautiful. Sounded to me like she was singing right in front of me with no interference, clicks, pops or distortion whatever. Do keep in mind that I'm not an audiophile. I just enjoy music.

Finally, the 6gb of RAM, the 32gb SS cache and the 500mb hard drive can be upgraded or replaced. The laptop components aren't glued together like the new Apple laptops or soldered to the motherboard.

Cons:

The usual bloatware.

A 30 day McAfee trial. I deleted this and substituted my own preferred antivirus system. Much less overhead.

When the dm4-3170se arrived the screen needed some work with the calibration software fortunately provided as part of the bloatware because the colors were way off. Not just to my eyes either. The light colors were washed out, blues were purple and white etc. This was the first time in all the computers I've owned and used that I've had to calibrate a screen. Interesting process and I sort of enjoyed doing it, but it shouldn't have been necessary. When I finished calibrating the screen, text especially small blue text was a mess. The Cleartype tools fixed this after 5 or 6 tries and now colors and text look great especially with the 1600 by 900 screen. I'm comfortable doing whatever I need to do with computers to get them running right, but for most people like all my relatives for instance, none of those fixes would have been possible. They would have sent the laptop back to Amazon.

Summary:

Very nice laptop for casual use. Well worth the $. I'm glad I bought it. Hope it lasts for many years.

Acer M5-481PT-6644 Touchscreen Ultrabook 3rd Generation Intel i5-3337U (2.7GHz w/ Turbo Boost) 6GB

Acer M5-481PT-6644 Touchscreen Ultrabook 3rd Generation Intel i5-3337U 6GB 500GB + 20GB SSD 14-inch HD CineCrystal LED-backlit display DVD+/-RW WebCam Bluetooth HDMI Windows 8Bought it "refurbished" with 90 day warranty for us$55914" touchscreen, 6GB , 500gb HDD with 20gb flash.

PROS: price, Windows 8, touchscreen, CD DVD RW drive. Size.

Actually is very quick for i5U. I am running MS Office 2007 Pro plus IE 10 and 16,000 MP3s. Win 8 setup was fastest and lest painful of all Windowsespecially setting up on work network. Used Easy Transfer cable to transfer emails, etc, etc. plus transferred documents. music and others via external usb 3.0 HDD.

OKs: screen is a little washed out and needs to be a correct angle (90* to your eyesight) for best results.

Bloatwareeasy to remove for an average Windows user. Acer recovery will reinstall factory defaults.

CONs: IDIOT or brother-in-law of Acer President had to design these:

a) power on button is too easy to push when you pick up the laptop.

b) I/) ports are on the back-minor thing, but since the laptop is so thin, it is difficult to insert/remove a USB drive without picking the laptop up.

Windows 8 "recovery disk" none are included and it takes a 32gb usb flash drive (or external HDD) to create a separate recovery media in case you crash. I bought a Patriot brand 32gb USB 3.0 from Frys for $31.

EXTRA: I installed a Toshiba Dynadock 3.0 and it worked right out of the box (had to get drivers from Toshiba website). Running both HDMI and DVI monitors. A VGA monitor also worked using included DVI/VGA adaptor.

Am upgrading the RAM by adding an 8gb Kinston chip (for a total of 10GB). Will wait on anything else. So far is it is fast enough with the 500gb 5400rpm HDD, even with large MS Access database.

I have been using the newer model of M5-481PT-6644 for about 6 months. Ever since Acer released the latest BIOS updates in March 2013, its functionality has greatly improved and power management options work really well.

Pros:

Battery lifeeasily get 6 to 8 hours with moderate use;

Windows 8 takes a little bit of getting used to but now love the Start Screen and overall ease of use;

Hybrid SSD drive that boots up in under 6 seconds!

Good built-in sound quality;

DVD-RW Drive (which is very rare to find in a ultrathin light laptops these days);

Backlit keyboard, Responsive touchscreen;

Lets you resume working almost immediately after sleep and hibernation;

Very thin, light and portable for a 14-incher;

Included Windows7 Backup in Windows 8 works excellent to backup & restore entire hard-drive;

Great value for money.

Cons:

Touchpad is hard to use;

have to use two fingers to operate volume buttons;

NTI Media Maker DVD burning software is only temporary;

Only two USB3.0 ports;

missing VGA port (this makes it impossible to use older/legacy overhead projectors while traveling).

Bottomline: Definitely recommended. Make sure to install the latest BIOS update from Acer's website. Do not buy the older version of this laptop still on sale at Amazon (model M5-481PT-6488) as it often locks up when resuming from sleep/hibernation. The older model also has other stability issues involving WiFi.

For the price, this refurbished laptop came with all the bells and whistles that I needed. Touchscreen works great so far and processor is fast and quiet. My only two qualms about this is that the screen could be a tad brighter and the laptop could be a little lighter and it would have been perfect. Other than these minor details, I'm still super happy and give this a max review.
