Dell Studio 1737 17-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

Dell Studio 1737 17-Inch LaptopI'm not a big computer guy...just give me a good screen and reasonbly fast execution and I'm happy

I went with this Dell laptop about 2 years ago because my first computer was a Dell desktop that was great; so I figured a Dell laptop was the way to go and didn't consider any other brand...I paid my $1000 bucks directly to Dell

Mind you i'm no tech-junkie...I don't stretch it any further than Word..E-mail..Shopping..and YouTube

BUT

I do type quite a bit...and this keyboard has started to fail after about 1 1/2 years....Constantly having to go back and

ASUS X501A-WH01 15.6' Notebook | Intel Celeron B820(1.7GHz), 2GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, WebCam, HDMI, Windows 8Great laptop! One of the smoothest laptop I've ever owned. Beautiful screen. Very fast and responsive. Very sleek and modern looking. I used to be a HP guy, but now Asus got my attention!

Thirty days after buying it, the spacebar stopped working. Apparently this is a common problem with these notebooks and I am unable to find a fix.

This is a bad laptop. my spacebar didnt work well, so i looked online and found that the problem was widespread with this model. the keys also dont register, there was an issue with zoom i had to fix, and the curser flies all over. it took 20 minutes to write a paragraph because the curser would jump to mid sentance or it would just fly across the screen and click on things. it would rarely register clicks on the first try. it was just bad. i kept it almost to the end of my 2 week window to return it, but i couldnt make it work right. i am so glad i exchanged it because the one i got instead works like a dream.

Asus NB ATOM1.6/2GB/320GB/10.1""/NO Notebooks

Asus NB ATOM1.6/2GB/320GB/10.1''/NO NotebooksIt is a netbook, not a notebook or laptop computer. If you want the power of a good laptop that's what you should get. If you want a very convenient way to web surf, check e-mail, tweet and use Facebook, this nifty little netbook will do fine.

Lightweight, easy to use and set up, my netbook operates perfectly and is very handy for use when in a hurry. I have not tested the battery life but it seems to last longer than a normal laptop. I'd guess a good 6 hours, but not 11 as some ads might state.

Videos, like YouTube, are slightly "jumpy" because a computer this small does not have a dedicated video card. Again, if you are looking for the features of a top line laptop you should not get this netbook. Video playback is decent, just not HD or as smooth as a notebook or desktop can give you. I would not use this computer for streaming video or graphics editing. Also, remember the screen is very small and you may need to use a little "zoom" or enlarge the fonts to see some forms of text. Sound quality is definitely lacking through the built in speaker. If you need loud volume you won't get it from this netbook. I have not tried headphones or external speakers but I'd assume they provide decent sound. The built in speaker is good enough if you are in a quiet room or have very little distracting noise, but you cannot crank the volume up enough to overcome all forms of distractions. Look elsewhere if built in speaker sound is of high importance. I've used this computer as a bedside "radio" to listen to the BBC and World Radio Network online while falling asleep. It does a good job of that. As you can imagine, that means I've set up the computer on my home wireless network and that was a snap. All in all this computer does just what you'd expect for its size and processing power. If you are looking for a NETbook this is the one to get. If you are looking for the power of a good laptop get that instead.

I got this netbook in good time. I am realy pleased with it albiet one thing I was displeased with was that the battery is not as advertised. I get 8 hours. I dont know if you can get a bigger battery or if it was misrepresented. It is really small and light with a good keyboard.

Purchased in August to replace an Asus 1005HA that I loved. Ok but Win7 is a dog compared to the XP based 1005HA. Should have put the money towards an iPad as I expected to be able to upgrade to Win8 as I hoped Windows 8 would be optimized for tablets and Netbooks. According to Asus not upgradable "due to Cedar Trail chipset is not supporting upgrade to Windows 8".

Still a good Netbook, I knew going in win7 was drag on the system but expected to upgrade to Win 8.

This will be my last Windows based PC iPad and Mac in my future now.

I couldn't be happier with the performance. It handles W7 with no problem and the hybrid engine gives me to "instant on" capabilities. I haven't tried the battery life yet but I use it primarily plugged. The keyboard is no problem either because the key pads are large even though the layout is condensed compared to a standard keyboard.

Acer Aspire AS5560-8480 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Acer Aspire AS5560-8480 15.6-Inch LaptopGot this product for four hundred and thirty bucks, and for that price, I really feel like I got a great deal. You'd pay twice as much to get the entry level mac, but with much less capability. I essentially paid what you would for a decent tablet, but got a huge hard drive, well rated processor and graphics card, large, bright screen, and high quality webcam. I wanted something that I could load all my CDs onto (thus the need for a large hard drive), browse the web, skype, and use for working at home. So far it's proven very capable, and I'm not even completely familiar with everything else it does. I'm not a gamer, but the graphics card does meet the minimum requirements for virtually all games, and the recommended requirements for many. There's a website somewhere that lists all that.

My girlfriend has a Mac laptop, and I will admit that the build quality of it is far superior to the Acer. The Acer is not metal construction, nor does it feel as solid as the mac, but I would rather Acer spend the money where I wanted it...in the capabilities.

If you're looking for a budget computer with quite a few bells and whistles, this is definitely worth a look.

Very impressed with AMD's new CPU/GPU combo. Running SWTOR like a champ at decent settings (details and textures on high, bloom and shadows off, AA and AF low). The system is overall very fast and responsive. The design and aesthetics are pretty good all around. I would have preferred a matte screen over a glossy one but I knew that this one was glossy going in. The average user will be very happy with their purchase.

I've had this laptop for months now, got it in february and i must say it's a great product, i got mine with a 8gb ram upgrade, since day 1 it has performed flawlessly, it has enough power to run most programs and games (though do not expect high framerates in latest games), it doesn't have cooling problems though when gaming it can get somewhat hot but i think that is to be expected, the screen is acceptable, as in most laptops (even higuer end ones) you get washed out images when watching at the screen from certain angles, this is not the exception, you will have to be in front of the screen to get a good image quality, the only downside is the cd/dvd drive and the keyboard: i noticed the dvd drive itself sticking out of the laptop side after a few days, it still works well but that could have been built better; the keyboard is well built and confortable but it has lots of hollow parts under the keys and these are hard to reach it tends to get very dirty very quickly, good thing i always keep a little brush-pen specially for cleaning those hard to get areas in keyboards.

Verdict: Even though the keyboard and dvd drive problems i'd recommend this laptop to everyone, is a great deal and a powerfull machine.

This laptop is amazing. It has the ability to play most High-End games. The battery life averages around 5 1/2 hours off of a full charge. The screen is big, and quite clean. Its also easily upgradable for higher RAM(DDR3) which is a simple installation, though I don't think It's needed. The wireless capabilities function well, especially when used for gaming. I'm actually preferring to play some games on this, than on my Xbox360.

Overall: 5/5 Stars. Well worth the $500 for a great product. Perfect for gamers who are looking for a decent rig to run most games on Ultra.

HP Pavilion DV4-1280US 14.1-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB

HP Pavilion DV4-1280US 14.1-Inch LaptopThis is my first laptop and I think I made a great choice. Firstly, I bought it directly from hp.com and with the rebates I had, saved two hundred dollars. Secondly, I got free 2 day shipping and it arrived on time.

The first thing I like about it is that the color is not the cheap gold look you see in the picture. I love the keyboards on HPs Entertainment and Special Edition notebooks. They do not feel cramped. There have been many cmplaints about the glare of the keyboards on this and the black and chrome models. So far, I have had no problems with the glare. Yes, I agree with the other reviewer, that the keys are hard to see in the dark. I would assume that would be the case for any laptop unless it is backlighted and this is not. It is light (wtihtout the battery), the speakers generate nice sound, it finds wireless networks instantly, and I actually like Vista. Just a note, read up on accessing the hidden administrator account if you are new to Vista. It has some serious security that will keep you from making even the most basic adjustments, including removing the bloatware.

HP has done a wonderful job in including set up tutorials and online registration processes. The size is fantastic and screen is beautiful. I have not attached any peripherals up to it yet, so I cannot really comment on that.

Cons:

The battery life is short.. maybe an hour and a half even when it in the recommended power save mode. It has a lighted HP emblem on the back of the cover that uses resources. HP could have added the backlighted keyboard instead! The verdict is still out on there telephone tech service! I have had better experience with there chat support.

The comp does sound like it is working overtime anytime I burn a CD and the vibration generating from drive is a bit too much for me to type at the same time.

This is a great laptop, esp. if you can get it for under $. It has only some bells and whistles, so if you want built in bluetooth and a blueray player, you will have to go up a model. Otherwise, no reason not to consider this one.

Performance is good, lookwise it is good and come with good features but only problem is with keyboard color...you can't see lables/alphabets on keyboard clearly (because of bronze color) specially during night time...I am good in keyboard typing so it's fine for me ..if you are not good in typing and can't type without looking into keyboard then little bit you need to strugle in finding keys in keyboard.

This laptop worth it for $700....good value for money and go for it if you are comfortable with keyboard

I am unable to edit my rating ...I will rate this laptop for 4 out of 5

This would be a nice little laptop but the contrast between the key color and the letters on the keys is not nearly enough to see what keys you are using. None of my people could use this laptop, even the touch-typers because they still needed to be able to see what the function keys do.(The function keys seem to be different on every laptop.) I have returned this as it is unusable as shipped and you can't tell by the picture how hard it is to see the keys.

I've had this laptop for two days, got a great deal from a local electronics store. My previous laptop was a Asus 1000, but the 10 inch screen on the Asus was getting to me. I really wanted the HP 13.3 inch screen model but could not find a good deal. So going with the 14inch was my choice. If you are experienced with windows, you will be able to remove all the crap that HP gives you with this machine. Newegg has many Hi Tech users and 62% give this 5 stars.

PROS:

1. Much much faster than my old Asus netbook (I'm learning Vista)

2. I like the removable DVD drive to reduce weigh.

3. The lighted controls for volume and more are a nice touch, very easy to operate. (previously I would have to click on the screen and find the volume)

4. I like the mouse pad and scroll bar. Plenty of finger space.

5. HDMI output with a remote control!! I've tested the remote and it worked great. I also tested the HDMI output to my LCD TV and the picture was the best I have seen yet from a computer. (Previously I hooked my Asus to my LCD screen but had to rely on the computer sound, picture and sound blow the Asus away)

6. Great Wireless N!! Much better range than my old Asus. (Many HP laptop models have a better rating on Amazon but they don't have wireless N. This one does. With a wireless N router you can double your speed if you have a good internet connection. Moving large files in your home network etc. (I walked this to the other side of my house and still had a great connection!)

7. Sound is clear and much louder than my old laptop. Very nice!

8. Screen is clean and bright.

CONS:

1. Battery. I get two hours. (on my old machine I got 5 hrs. I'll solve this by purchasing an extra battery)

2. Keyboard markings are very dim. (This is not a problem for me, in a dim room the screen is bright enough to light the keys. I should point out that my old shiny black Asus was tough to see the keys in a very dim room)

3. No bluetooth, but it does come with the software built in. I see that Amazon has many dongles that can plug into the USB ports. I'll followup this review after purchasing one.

Finally I'd like to add that I feel I'm going to love this machine, I've used the DVD burner and its twice as fast as my old external burner. My wife's Acer laptop model 3000 can't touch this machine.

UPDATE:

I removed the negative comment on the DVD, the Drive is perfectly fine. Also found out that right above the SD card location is a slot to store the remote control that comes with this. Just snap out the dummy expansion sleeve and insert your remote. Very Cool! I also bought a Bluetooth adapter and plugged it into a USB slot and it has the best sound to my wireless bluetooth headphones that I have ever used to date.

Latest update 9-18-09:

Downloaded the evaluation version of Windows 7 from the Microsoft. It comes in a ISO file which I burned to a blank CD and inserted into my laptop and it completely wiped away Windows Vista and installed Windows 7. This machine now is the fastest laptop in my house. Windows 7 is better than Windows XP and blows away Windows Vista in too many ways to mention here. I strongly recommend everyone to upgrade when Microsoft comes out with their final version on Oct 22nd. I'm sure Amazon will be selling it.

Sony VAIO VGN-NS325J/T 15.4" Notebook (2.0GHz Intel Pentium Dual-C T4200 3GB RAM 250GB HDD DL DVD-R

Sony VAIO VGN-NS325J/T 15.4' NotebookI came to Amazon looking for this notebook because it has been the very best computer I've ever had.

Hands down.

It is and has always been fairly quick with very minimal work on my part (I got rid of Norton's and installed McAfee.) I have never had a single issue with this laptop. As a matter of fact mine is now 4 years and 5 months old and is still running like a top. I wanted to get another one in case mine ever dies so I started looking to see if they are still made. My only complaint, as someone else noted on another site, is the have a cheapish CD drive door but mine still works and still works fine so I shouldn't complain about that even.

This laptop is quick, not prone to errors, smudge proof, great screen, and even more unbelievable, still on the original battery even after 4.5 years!!!

If I can't find this at the time mine dies I will stay with the Sony family of products for sure!

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5511 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch HD Display Screen / AMD Dual-Core E-300 1

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5511 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch HD Display Screen / AMD Dual-Core E-300 1.3 GHz Processor / 4GB DDR3 RAM Memory / 320GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW / 6-cell Battery / Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium / BlackHello

I generally do not write reviews. However this particular product and the whole experience with Toshiba customer service has forced me to voice my concern.

I bought this laptop since it was cheap and loaded with many features. I had other options at the same price but i went with Toshiba because of company's reputation.

OK here is my experience;

I bought the laptop and brought it home. After 2-3 days it started giving me blue screen error(some hardware issue). Later On the laptop started to freeze without any reason. It came to a point that it started freezing every minute or so.

I could not return it because it was already past 30 days.

So first i searched google for known issues with this laptop. I was surprised to see that lot of people had the same problem. Somehow there was a faulty hardware in this particular lot that was shipped. It was sad to see that company was still selling this.

Anyway i called Toshiba Support Center to get it repaired (it has one year warranty). It seems the support center already knew the issue with the laptop. They told me right away to ship it to there repair location. I was happy that they are familiar with the issue. Ok here is the fun part; they told me to ship the laptop to there location at my own expense, i.e. pay 25$ for laptop shipment. I tried to argue but they said its there policy. They know that they have shipped a faulty hardware with there laptop and now on top of that they are asking us to pay again for shipping it to get it repaired.

Anyway atleast i was given a choice to ship it with whichever method i choose to. So i went to USPS and i paid 15$ to ship it via priority mail with a tracking number etc.

Now i was trying to track my shipment with USPS to see if it has reached the repair location. Well, the USPS tried to deliver the laptop at there Louisville, KY repair location but there was nobody to receive it there. So USPS left a slip on there mail location to either schedule a re-delivery or pick it up.

As per USPS's new policy they do not do an automatic redelivery attempt. The receiver has to call to schedule a redelivery or pick it up at the post office.

Ofcourse i do not have a phone number for Toshiba's louisville repair center so that i can call them and ask them to schedule a redelivery; i called the Toshiba customer support center to see if they can help. To my surprise, they said since the laptop has not arrived at the repair location; it is not in there system so they can not help me with this. Instead of giving me alternative they hung up on me intentionally twice.

Now my laptop is sitting in some post office in Louisville which will be delivered back to me if not picked up in 15 days (USPS will not schedule redelivery on sender's request).

So basically , myself (the Toshiba customer) is going through unnecessary trouble for buying a faulty laptop. My only fault is that i bought this laptop because of Toshiba's reputation.

Therefore please be careful when you buy Toshiba's products, particularly be aware of the support center.

I am a big fan of everything Japanese; but this incident with Toshiba was surely not soothing.

Thanks for reading this review.

This laptop is perfect with battery life, size, weight, look, monitor quality, overall quality, AND the best part is its got a NumPad which is great if your used to desktop keyboards. Main thing I love about it is its battery life, 5 hours! Even more if you set it down to Power saving mode and run on low brightness, runs for about 6 hours if you're not heavy computing. Keyboard is SILENT and made of great quality. Monitor is the perfect size for a laptop this price. Hard drive space is PLENTY. RAM is plenty for regular usage! Only thing holding this baby back is its processor. It is a dual core AMD 1.3 GHz processor which is fairly slow. It plays HD video smoothly, plays 1080p without any problems. The problem comes up when doing heavy installations or running programs that eat up CPU resources. Other than that, it handles everything from schoolwork to browsing.

Purchased our first Toshiba on this sale strictly looking for a new laptop with Windows 7 still available. This laptop has a beautiful display and we've had no problems whatsoever with the hardware or software during the 6 weeks since we bought it. The only reason we did not give 5 stars is a lack of some small conveniences that we are used to in our older HP laptops, such as a HDD activity light and small buttons to quickly turn off the Wi-Fi connection, and the track pad since we favor an external mouse.

Lenovo Ideapad Y560 06465LU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Lenovo Ideapad Y560 06465LU 15.6-Inch LaptopLooking at this product for what it is, a low / mid end gaming laptop, I think it's a good product and well priced. What this product is not is a Think Pad. This is from Lenovo's consumer line, not their business line. The Think Pads are really nice, but they cost almost 2x as much feature per feature. This is also not a gaming powerhouse. My wife's 17" Sager gaming machine out performs this in every respect, but it also cost nearly 3 x times much.

The reason I give this computer 5 stars is price verse features. Most machines specked out the same way cost 10 to 20% more. It's also from Lenovo who seems to have decent customer support even for their consumer equipment. For me, it's a good travel laptop with enough video and processing power to play most modern games and run Creative Studio when I'm away from my desk.

I have been using this laptop for 15 days and until now I have no cons about the hardware. It's very fast, you can play several games (tested: Starcraft 2, Counter Strike Source, Call of Duty MW2, Far Cry 2) and the sound is amazing. Before it I had a Sony Vaio C2D T6600, and the only thing i'm missing is the keyboard and the keyboard skin to protect it.

Now, lets talk about the software: it comes with a lot of bloatware from Lenovo. The hard disk comes with 4 partitions so you can't create a new one. You i'll have to delete one, shrink the "c:"(that comes with more then 400gb) and then create a new partition with the size you choose. BUT BE CAREFUL: before you do this, you have to create the restore DVDs because if you change the partitions the lenovo software to create the restore DVDs will not work anymore.

Another issue is the fingerprint magnetic case.

I've been using this laptop for about 2 months, and i can say that is the perfect desktop replacement. i'll give 4 stars and a half to this machine

Pros:

1.the core i5 processor is really fast and can handle every program that you need to run, and with the added of the turbo boost is even more faster when the aplication that you're running needs it.

2.the graphics are AWESOME. I've been playing dirt 3, fifa 11, assasins creed brotherhood, grid, mafia II, and all this games run really smooth and great, using high details in 1366x768(that is a maximun resolution of the display) that is a little less display that someone can expect, but is enough for all multimedia aplications. the ati 5730 card gives amazing graphics and turn this laptop into a really capable gamers machine, and even better than some asus or alienware games laptops, that can surpase the 1000$, and the switchable graphics system work wonders in this machine. This thing flyes baby.

3.the 4 gb of ram memory are more than enough to run everything that you throw to this laptop. and if 4 gb is not enough, you always can upgrade to 8 gb!.

4.the hard disk, is not 500GB HDD. it has about 470gb at 5200 rpm, but its all right. i recomend that in the future replace the storage unit, but for 748$ its a true bargain.

5.the desing of the laptop its really atractive and modern. looks like a intelectual gamers laptop. ha ha ha

Cons:

1.the build quality can be better. this is a really delicate laptop, (thats why i say this is a desktop replacement). its all plastic everywhere, and the structure, keyboard and display area bends, at a point, that you could be worry, and because of the size (15,6")for some people it can be dificult to transport.

2.-no blue ray burner optical unit.

3.it gets a little hot under intense gaming, so i recomend to buy a laptop cooler.

4.just about 2 hours of battery use, not that good in a laptop of its price (most of the time, i use it in home plugged to the wall, as a desktop replacement)

in conclusion, i highly recomend it as a desktop replacement or as a gaming laptop because its really fast, the core i5 processor that comes whit this machine, is nearly as fast as an i7 processor, and the ati 5730 with switchable video card is really powerfull, and for the price its the real deal, the best bang for the buck.

Want Lenovo Ideapad Y560 06465LU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Discount?

Pros:

1. Looks nice.

2. Speakers sound great too.

3. No problems dual booting this machine with Ubuntu 10.04 brightness control works fine under Ubuntu which was a severe problem with Gateway laptops.

3. Recovery discs that you create from inside pre-installed Windows 7 works like a charm.

4. Four 2.66 GHz i5 cores are good enough for heavy duty scientific computing as well as gaming.

5. The display is glossy and crisp but the colors aren't that "deep". (Gamma and saturation values need to changed?).

6. The wrist pads and the keyboard don't get heated up as do similar configuration Gateway models.

7. The keypad is a joy to type on.

8. The webcam is pretty good too.

Cons:

1. i5's generates a lot more heat than Core Duo's. The air coming out of side vents do get really hot.

2. The construction of the chassis underneath is not as tough. Not as comfy as a Mac.

3. Like most laptops, the hinges of the display are not rigid.

Look for competing prices from other online stores.

Toshiba 14" Satellite Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / Blu-ray ROM / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard Dr

Toshiba 14' Satellite Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / Blu-ray ROM / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive - PlatinumBought this laptop about 4 weeks ag and am THRILLED with it! The speakers are fabulous, the keys are very easy to work with. Love the compact design. It has lightning speed with connections. Would highly recommend!!

I purchased this model in September 2011 from a big box store.

Pros: It is pretty

The sound is excellent

The i5 processor is okay

Battery life okay about 3-4 hours

Nice size

Cons: Extremely sensitive touchpad that needs to be disabled in order to input text more than 2 words

From the beginning, I've had issues with the keyboard, especially Left shift key to get upper case text; this has deteriorated and finally in early May, the keyboard just plain died. Since May 10th I've been trying to get it repaired -with 1.5 years left on my warranty.

Sadly, I've discovered that Toshiba's customer service is the worst I have ever encountered. I had to pay $25.00 and wait for a shipping carton to send the laptop to the Kentucky service center. Even though I still had the orginal packaging and could have used that to return it, it would have been worth it, but....

I sent them "my" laptop with access to my software and files (backed up, thankfully) and a dead keyboard.

2 weeks after my original contact, I received back the same chassis with cleared hard drive filled with factory-loaded software and a dead keyboard.

Before I turned it on, I read the paperwork which said there was no problem with the hardware, that there was a software corruption. It did not say what software. When I called to question this, I was told that the problem was with MS Windows7 HP and they had done a clean install. (ie so I didn't need to worry about any of my personal software.)

So, I hung up and plugged it in and turned it on. The Windows screens came up for me to enter my name and laptop's name. But since keyboard still didn't work, I was unable to even put in my first name.

It took me 4 phone calls to obtain email paperwork to return my 305 for another visit to Kentucky. Since it is a holiday weekend, the soonest I will be able to have it go to UPS will be Tuesday, May 29th... Fortunately, I have a netbook (a Toshiba BN205 that has been great and the reason I shopped Toshiba for the Satellite) so I am not totally wiped out of the cyberworld but I really need the larger format for work.

I am so disappointed; this isn't the Toshiba from years past. I paid almost $900 for this laptop on sale. In my online research this past week, I found that other buyers have had keyboard, touch pad, and especially shift key issues over time.

8/6/12 update: In fairness to Toshiba, I felt like I should update my review:

Almost 6 weeks after I originally sent my laptop in, I finally received it back from Toshiba repair service. The motherboard and keyboard were replaced and the laptop is now working perfectly. While I was waiting, because the netbook was not adequate to handle my workload for so long a time, I ended up buying a Lenovo 570 and have been extremely happy with that. So the Toshiba is now available for sale.....Hopefully the buyer will have no further problems, because I would not wish dealing with the Toshiba customer services on anyone.

Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV 13-Inch Ultrabook

Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV 13-Inch UltrabookI have updated the USB drivers and I have no problems with this machine.

My wife who owns a Mac Air, commented that she likes the keyboard better than her Mac!

I would certainly recommend this to anyone looking for a laptop replacement or for an alternative to a tablet. I looked at several but felt that needing to add a keyboard for work was a little too much.

The battery life is excellent and after getting used to the Win 8 operating system.

If you need a light, powerful ultrabook, give this a look and good luck finding these with this type of configuration.

Have no issues with this product outside of the 3.0 USB hub not working on the first OR second ultrabooks.

I received this nice machine as ordered opened the box boot up and so far so good. Win 8 is actually a nice system but.... upon connecting a 16G thumb drive to load some data, no prompt from the computer that a device had been connected.

Contacted Dell support. They attempted to fix the software remotely with did not solve the problem.

I was informed that Dell would send a replacement via overnight shipping. This did come as promised.

Attached my USB devices.........nothing.

USB Hub was not functioning.

Have been informed that I will get a full refund which will show up in two billing cycles (?!).

So far, I have no complaints regarding Dell service. Their hardware? Well, I'm sure you know the answer to that. Don't want to go to Apple, but.........

I gave a three star rating because it is a nice machine but with usb connections not working maybe I should give it a lower rating.

After several months it's time to update my review.

I have had the mother board, daughter board and ubs hubs replaced TWICE!

The ubs hub on the left side still does not work and today the hard drive crashed!!

I have followed Dell's instructions, have had 2 service techs try to resolve the issue to no resolution.

I have spent the better part of two hours speaking to Dell support, getting bumped back and forth and told that my machine cannot be replaced even though I have purchased a 1 yr warranty !

I will tell anyone looking at purchasing this computer DON'T DO IT!!!! No wonder this company is falling apart.

I should have purchased an APPLE!!

My rating would be a negative number if it were possible.

I bought a 13" Dell XPS Ultrabook in February (2013) to replace another, older Dell laptop. From the first day there were problems drops internet, active window loses focus, USB ports don't work, etc.

To date, I've spent +20 hours on the phone with Dell support and with technicians who came to the house, first to replace the touchpad, then the motherboard and touchpad (on the first computer). Finally I found someone in corporate and complained enough to get a replacement. Unfortunately, this one is just as bad... and actually has more problems, including: left side USB port doesn't work, requires multiple reboots to actually start, drops internet connection regularly, back lit keyboard ambient sensor issues (active window loses focus).

I would very strongly urge anyone looking at a Dell product to look elsewhere.

I am a small business owner who has bought a lot of computers from Dell, both desktops and laptops and I have never experienced anything as bad as this. I'm done with Dell support and Dell products. Service is a joke and the hardware simply doesn't work as advertised. They are selling half finished products. I will keep trying to use this one and then I'll replace it with a laptop from another company.

I purchased my XPS13 in December 2012.

THE GOOD. The size is tterrific, the screen is great, the I7 processor is outstanding.

THS BAD. The keyboard is horrible. Do you see all tthe double spaces and duplicate lettters? That's not poor typing skills that's keyboard bouunce. You better have a greatt editor, otherwise what you write is going to look like tthis. The touchpad is unusable. When youu push the right button, it also acttuates the left button, and yyour screen goes nuts for 5 minutes. I had to buuy a USB mouse to use the lapttop at all.

In short, not the best $2000 I've ever spent. Until Dell figures out what's wrong and fixes it, I'd recommend to buy sometthing else.

This would be an AWESOME laptop if it would boot up. I was super excited to get this on Christmas morning. Turned it on and went through the typical set up. The dell diagnostic software advised that there were several updates that needed to be done so I let it do its thing. The BIOS update finished and said SUCCESSFUL and it rebooted. It hasn't booted up since then. I just get a black screen. No POST. I called Dell and spent 1 hour and 54 minutes on the phone with a tech support person. In the end, he proceeded in trying to convince me that Windows 8 needed to be reloaded and that he would send out a disk. This laptop doesn't have a disk drive. So then he told me that they would replace the motherboard. This is not a good resolution. It's brand new and cost me over $1400. I don't think I want to have anyone tearing into it and replacing parts already. So the tech took my number and said he'd need to speak to a manager and that he would call me back in 1 to 2 hours. I'm still waiting. No call. I realize it's Christmas day but they too should realize that this was a gift and I feel very badly that it isn't working. Kinda spoils the excitement of Christmas.

Used Aluminum PowerBook G4/1.67 GHz, 1024 MB of RAM, 80 GB internal drive, internal SuperDrive, internal 56k modem, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth installed, 15' display, Certified Pre-Owned Mac with 90 day warranty, OS CD is not included, OS 10.4.11 installed, Classic Installedoverall I am disappointed in this machine. I bought it to help develop a travelogue blog while overseas, assuming that the large memory and multimedia functionality typical of a mac would suit. Additionally the price was great. What I found was that the machine was not loaded with pages/keynote et. al. That wasn't such a big deal as the primary purpose was to use the multimedia functions of the blog. I could not update anything on the machine, nothing., nada, zilch. I was not able to download Skype. Then the powercord shorted out in the middle of the trip leaving the machine useless to me. Unlike the US, not everywhere in the world is mindlessly attracted to the newest and latest Apple product, so replacing the cord was not possible. Overall, disappointed.

Dell Inspiron i15N-3091BK 15-Inch Laptop

Dell Inspiron i15N-3091BK 15-Inch LaptopI just received this today so I may post a follow up review later.

My first impression was that it was huge. It's thicker and heavier than I expected but for the price point it's to be expected. I don't plan to travel too often with it so it's not a huge concern to me. Setup with windows 8 is unbelievably simple and makes it quick to get up and running. I'm not a fan of the new Metro start screen. I tried to customize it but it still just took up way too much space for my liking. So I ended up downloading a free app, called classic shell that brought back the start menu functionality for me. I think the laptop (which is what we are actually reviewing here not windows 8) is quite peppy and the specs are more than adequate for any average user. If you primarily use your computer for homework, email, web surfing, etc this will be great. If you're a heavy gamer you probably want something else.

I bought a Dell Inspiron in 2004 and loved it. It did its job for years and after 8 years, decided to buy a new laptop. Everybody told me Toshiba was the computer to have. Well, I listened and it crashed immediately. Since then it has crashed 2 more times and I finally junked it. I said the heck with it and bought this one. Absolutely no problems whatsoever and I love it. It's a great laptop and you can't beat the price. Maybe it's just bad luck with Toshiba and good luck with Dell, but I'm sticking with Dell. I'm not a computer geek and don't understand much about computers. I just know Dell has been good to me for the last 9 years.

This it is my second, after I returned the first one with the same issue. The size, weight and Windows 8 Operating System are fine. However, they have a defect in the sensitivity of the mouse. It causes the curser to skip all over the place. You will be typing an email and it will suddenly skip to the middle of another sentence or paragraph or even better delete the document or email all together. It is all random and at first I thought it was me, then maybe just a weird defect. I sent the brand new Laptop back to Amazon, who promptly sent me another new one. The same thing started again after about 2 weeks. I contacted Dell support, in India. After about 30 minutes on the phone and remote access to remedy the issue they told me that I would need to purchase a $289 "Software Warranty" to correct the problem. I was told I must have downloaded something that corrupted the Mouse File. Seriously, are you kidding! On both brand new laptops? I had not even put my personal documents on the system yet. And certainly did not download anything. All I had done was surf the net on some basic websites like Amazon and Target!

I have returned the second one and was refunded my money. I ordered a Samsung Chromebook, $150 dollars cheaper and looks like it is going to be a much better laptop. Do not purchase this item. I have no idea how it got good reviews? If it had not happened with two different new laptops I could have understood but this is definitely a defect in the computer.

Apple iBook G4 800mhz, 384mb, 30gb, CDROM, Wireless, Leopard

Apple iBook G4 800mhz, 384mb, 30gb, CDROM, Wireless, LeopardI bought this laptop for my son to use while he was looking for a job, figuring that if it held up for 6 months I'd have gotten my money's worth out of it. There were a few small problems at the beginning, but the company that sold it to me stands behind their products and the problems were resolved rather quickly. It's still working just fine! My son is getting more use out of it than we expected. I've "borrowed" it for a few weeks while my Air Book was in the shop. It's a good little laptop.

This was a Pretty clean MacBook. It was way slower than I expected because they put the new software on it but the hardware was older and has a hard time keeping up.

Toshiba Computer Systems - Satellite 15.6" Laptop - 4gb Memory - 640gb Hard Drive AMD A8-series Pro

Toshiba Computer Systems - Satellite 15.6' Laptop - 4gb Memory - 640gb Hard Drive AMD A8-series ProcessorThis budget laptop has some nice features for the money. It's got a good size hard drive (640GB) and 4GB of RAM, and it's reasonably fast. It also has a nice bright 15" screen. But I just can't get past the horrible sounding speakers. Now I know the speakers on most laptops are terrible. But these are by far the worst I've ever heard. The SRS Premium Sound HD option that comes with this laptop improves the sound SLIGHTLY. But even when using that option, the speakers still sound very tinny and trebly...to the point where I can't even listen to them anymore. Because they actually grate on and cause a very unpleasant sensation in my ears. After just a few days, I had to buy some Logitech multimedia speakers to use as a replacement speaker system for this laptop. Also, after just a few days, I've noticed that the mouse freezes up sometimes. I guess it's like anything else...you get what you pay for. But despite its positive attributes, I can't recommend this product.

Lenovo G570 4334ECU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Lenovo G570 4334ECU 15.6-Inch LaptopWe needed an extra machine in the house and after looking at a number of reviews on Amazon, this looked like it would fit the bill. Came quickly and well wrapped. I was pleased when I first booted it up that there was very little installed crapware to remove -I removed the Lenovo-provided trial virus ware and we were good to go. From unwrapping to being on the internet was under 5 minutes. Easy wireless, great keyboard, and a crisp screen (nice size and HD quality) make this a perfect working laptop. And the price is awesome.

I just went back to college and needed a laptop. I had been through several toshiba, dell, and compaq laptops over the years and this one is so much better than anything I've ever used.

I've had my laptop for a few months now and I haven't had any problems. It isn't flashy and is a little bulkier than I'd like but it's inexpensive and works! I generally use it for surfing the web, typing papers, doing homework, and watching netflix and it does the trick. It's not the fastest or flashiest but for the price I'm glad I got it!

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Laptop, Intel Core i3 Processor, 13.3" Display

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Laptop, Intel Core i3 Processor, 13.3' DisplayI agree with those who say the keyboard is a little weird at first, but it took me little time to get used to it. I also agree that you should not buy this machine here since I just picked mine up at Best Buy for $699.99 with the added convenience of being able to take it back to them should anything go wrong (in the first year).

As with any computer you ever buy, the first question you ask yourself is, "What am I going to use it for?" I don't plan on doing any heavy lifting with it and the specs are better than either of my desktops which I've used to run Photoshop and AutoCad. I don't see how anyone can complain about the speed for the price. I want to do word-processing, surf the Net and watch video. This laptop handles all of these things nicely. Why did I pony up an extra $150 for this model over the other Toshiba at the store? It's small. Very important to me.

After reading a thousand reviews on this thing, I have one last thing to say: Suggesting to me that I should go get a MacBook instead of a Toshiba is the most useless thing you can put in a review. I already have a MacBook that I got as a hand-me-down, and it's sitting on the ping pong table in my garage. I don't like Macs, and there is nothing wrong with me because of it. It's like saying, "Oh, that's a nice laptop, but you really should have bought a Chevy." Just tell me about THIS computer, and then go make out with your Mac.

At 1st I wanted to buy a mini because I thought of it being more portable. Then I found out that they are quite slow when you start to add programs like Microsoft office because they are mainly for internet, email, etc. plus they don't come with a CD drive (unless you purchase one separately)

But the laptops seemed too big and heavy for me to carry around (student).. After doing tons of research I found this computer. The R705-P35 it's super light, might be as light as a mini. It has tons of memory and it runs many programs at once with no problems. It's quiet, it's thin, and it's pretty small! 13.3in!! So, if you are looking for a mini with the memory of a bigger computer, this is the one for you.

Can't say much about battery life because I always have it plugged in, but I will make sure to update if there are any issues.

Buy Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Laptop, Intel Core i3 Processor, 13.3" Display Now

This is the laptop I've been waiting for. It's light. It's lighter than my old netbook but includes a real processor (no atom) with a dvd player. Finally I have something I can do real work on that doesn't wrench my shoulder out of its socket. It has great battery life. Recently took two connecting flights down to FL no battery problems, and it was on pretty much the whole way. Amazing. And the small form factor means I can actually use it on the airplane without any yoga positions. It's plenty fast for what I need it for light duty programming, office apps, surfing the net, etc. Did I mention its lightness? I'm always handing it to people to amaze them with its miniscule avoirdupois.

What I don't like: not a whole lot. Toshiba limits the crapware it installs, but I wish it were easier to get rid of their proprietary "enhancements" to the OS. There's one left that I can't figure out how to ditch the webcam controls that pop out annoyingly from the side if you move the mouse over the edge. Something dumb that I wish I didn't have to pay for but that doesn't hurt anything Wimax. Useless to me (and most people I suspect). Also it's fan is sometimes a bit noisy but only a problem when watching dvd's with the speaker's volume turned down.

Pros:

-Big hard drive (500gb). Wont run out of room on this thing.

-New intel i3 processor is peppy. It runs fast and multi-tasks quite well.

-Portability (amazingly light)

-13 inch screen is just the right size for a decent work space.

-No noticeable screen glare

Cons:

-Chiclet style keyboard is not well executed. The keys are slick to touch and mushy to press. Space Bar is especially bad. Feels very cheap for a computer of this price.

-Touchpad needs to be fine tuned. Default settings for sensitivity and multi touch features are crummy

-Speaking of multi touch... It is EXTREMELY spotty. I installed Ubuntu Linux alongside the provided Windows 7 and the two finger scrolling worked much smoother

-I'm BIG on battery life. I got this computer especially for it's advertised 8-9 hour battery time. In reality, however, it gets around 4 1/2. Hardly enough to last me through the day. (This is on low screen brightness and in the "eco-mode" power setting)

All in all, this is a good machine. I would love it if the keyboard wasn't so crappy and it got a little better battery life. Still, for the money it's tough to beat the specs provided. If you've got some extra cash I would probably go for the MUCH better constructed Macbook or Macbook Pro.

I've been looking for a PC equivalent of the MacBook Air since...forever. But so far, nobody has been able to combine light weight, big screen size, and affordability. I've looked up and down, and only the R705 can beat the MBA.

Pro:

1) Only a feather heavier than the MBA 13";

2) But has twice the specs in CPU, hard drive, and RAM.

3) Also has eSATA, SD reader, HDMI, DVD burner, WiMax and one more USB port. MBA = nada.

4) In case you haven't noticed, it's so much more affordable.

Con:

1) It's not sexy like the MBA. You're not going to fall in love with it. Strictly a workhorse.

2) Power adapter is still the same brick that Toshiba has been including for the past 10 years. No innovations there. Cable management definitely needs improvement.

This is THE laptop to get if you need a light but powerful travelling laptop!

Got it around Christmas time. So far, so good. It's a jewel for the price and tackles all I need to do well: Lots of documents, some spreadsheets, play with photos, slideshows, web design, and some video streaming. I haven't done any video editing on it, but I'm thinking it will be fine for my needs. I don't play high-end computer games. My Sweetie put Unreal and some Steam games on his and has no problem with them, but we did max out the RAM, so I'm sure that makes a difference for his gaming.

We're huge Asus fans. I have an Eee netbook I use for back and forth at work (I teach at college so I'm in different rooms all the time), and I've never had a problem with it.

The keyboard is fine, but my big hands constantly bump the mousepad--that's not a new problem with me, so I work around it. The screen's a nice size and has good resolution for me. Flawlessly picked up the WiFi and network printer.

If you're looking for a good basic laptop for common computing applications, I recommend this one.

I bought two of these last September (2012) one for my self, one for my father. For the most part, I like it. However I have found that even with an upgrade to 8 gigs of memory their is a definitely slow processing capability inherent with the C-60 dual core AMD process and on board video. Even with all the latest drivers, and BIOS watching streaming Netflix, Hulu, or even Youtube videos is agonizing. The video often lags the audio by as much as 5 minutes at times. Even running simple programs the CPU is peeked out at 100% and the overall processing speed of the machine is very very slow. The build of it is solid and it looks great. The video quality is very good in HD. The audio is a big lacking though. I'd recommend a good USB or standard audio head set. Additionally, the touch pad, even with the smart pad technology, is very very very touchy and "emotional." In fact I'd say that THAT issue is the most bothersome for me. Over all if you just want a basic slow laptop to serve as a kids tool, not good for video, or gaming, just basic school work, this PC is budgeted well for that task. Otherwise buy a higher end ASUS for better performance in streaming video or gaming.

HP Pavilion DV5-1250US 15.4-Inch Laptop

HP Pavilion DV5-1250US 15.4-Inch LaptopThis truly is the best laptop ever. 64 bit OS, 4 gigs of ram, huge hard drive, amazingly fast cpu, perfect screen size, and extremely light! Not to mention this bronze color is really nice too. The other 2 people who reviewed this said they are returning it because they cant see the keys? Sure, the f1-f12 keys are very difficult to see. But return this amazing laptop because its difficult to see that a function key is labeled "f1" is rediculous! As long as you know how to count and have used a computer before this is the best laptop !

I read some amazing reviews of this laptop. The only one I found that had anything negative to say was S.K.'s review here on Amazon. And he's absolutely right. I also returned the laptop to HP (who offered me a $70 credit to keep it, take note). There are 3 basic design issues which, for me, make this laptop unusable.

1. Keyboard. The keys themselves are a bronze color and the key symbol is black. It makes it virtually impossible to see what the keys are. An unbelievably stupid design decision. Having read S.K.'s review, I thought that maybe the keyboard is back lit, thus making it easy to see which keys are which. The keyboard isn't back lit. Even with good over head light, the keyboard is very difficult to read. I know I tried.

2. Screen glare. Gone are the days, it seems, when laptops came with a readable, easy on the eye, matt finish LCD screen. This laptop, like so many I looked at, has a highly reflective plastic coating which completely covers the screen. Yes, it will protect the screen but the reflections it picks up from everything else to the sides and behind you are incredibly distracting. If I'd wanted a mirror, I'd have bought a mirror.

3. Screen tilt. The screen does not lay completely flat like other laptops I've had in the past. This one goes back to about a 120 degree angle. I sometimes use an external screen with a laptop so need something which can lay flat and not get in the way of the external screen while I use the laptop keyboard in front of it.

Issues #2 and #3 I could maybe have lived with, but the keyboard issue was a deal breaker for me. A great pity because this laptop has a great spec for a great price. HP, what were you thinking?

I bought a Toshiba A305-S6916 instead. It has an almost identical spec to the DV5-1250us. It too suffers with issues #2 and #3, but it was a little cheaper. The small saving will be used up buying an anti-glare filter for the screen. Not much I can do about the tilt. Oh well.

Buy HP Pavilion DV5-1250US 15.4-Inch Laptop Now

I had to just give up my 17" screen HP laptop, which over the course of three years, melted down it's own screen, had a bad hard drive and also system board issues. Now I have a DV5 which I cannot get the tracking pad to stop hopping all over my screen, going haywire. The worst tracking pad in the industry. It makes it virtually impossible for me to write an email or a document since the system jumps around the screen and performs functions which I have not commanded, I cannot eve cut and paste or copy and paste without it taking me about 10 minutes to do so after catching the pointer. It is unbelievable. I have to work with this system with an exterior mouse. Which means the level of mobility for my laptop is limited since I have to use an external mouse. Even the controls to disable the pad do not work. Until HP gets their driver and their tracking pad under control, I would reconsider this purchase, unless you like playing hide and seek with the mouse pointer and playing "where will I end up in at any moment on my screen?" I hope that they are working on it.

This is a terrific computer, but has an extremely strange flaw. The keyboard is illegible. You have to strain your eyes to see the letters and characters printed in light grey on a grey background. With all the fuss made in the description about the design and form factor, it is mind blowing that can they make such a ridiculous error in design.

At first I thought, no biggie... I'll get used to it. I like the graphics card with 512 megs dedicated, the 2 AMD Turion 64 bit processors, the 4 gig RAM, the 400 meg drive. Unfortunatley I have now come to the realization that this is a deal breaker for me and will return the product. Too bad.
