Acer 11.6" AO725-0687 Laptop PC with AMD Dual-Core C-70 Processor,Windows 8 Operating System-Red

I am rating the Acer Aspire One (AO725-0687) as 5 stars based off what it is, not what it isn't. So maybe the best place to start is to say what it isn't. It isn't an Apple Ultrabook, a tablet PC, or a google or linux machine. If you're expecting a superfast, sleek, no-thought machine then you should cough up the couple grand to get an Apple. It also isn't running linuxso if you want to be able to customize every detail then you should probably go that direction.

So what is it? It's a balanced machine, which offers good performance, and nice perks, for a minimal price. Let's be honestif you're looking at an Acer Netbook you're attracted by the price primarily. This computer gives exceptional bang for your buck. It's only $60 more (at the time of writing) than a Kindle Fire HD, but you get a real full-fledged computer, with Win 8, with 320 gig HDD, with a pretty screen, and snazzy color. What more can you expect at this price point?

For the haters of WIn 8, it's not perfect, but it's pretty good. I would say to go with Windows 7 if you want a real work horse (my work computer is a Win 7 Lenovo), but Windows 8 is a great home operating system. It's fast, fun, cool, and integrates pretty seamlessly with a lot of the mobile apps available (e-mail, pulse, netflix, amazon, etc.) The OS is nice and doesn't take long to get used to (contrary to other reviews) so long as you're willing to learn.

Bottom lineif you want something which is a balance of different factors (customizable vs. no-work, price vs. performance, "cool" vs. work machine, etc.) then you can't do betterthis is a great machine and truly a 5 star experience.

This model has the C70-CPU and win 8. It does well in video playing. It comes with 1 USB 3.0 port, HDMI and long-life battery. My son loves it.

The Acer A0725-0687 is an amazing netbook for the price. I've owned it for about 3 weeks now and love it, but it does have its quirks.

Pros:

1. Radeon HD 7920 integrated graphics!!! (manufacturer and retail sites list it with 6920)

3. Computer is FAST for a netbook.

2. Hardware is easy to upgrade. You can remove the bottom plate by unscrewing one screw and sliding it. I replaced the stock hard drive with a 1 TB WD Blue and added a new stick of ram to max out its supported amount "Crucial 4GB DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 SODIMM 204-Pin CT51264BC1339."

3. Computer is VERY lightweight and VERY thin.

4. This can actualy play some games at low settings. I installed Bulletstorm just to see, and it was running at about 28fps.

5. Computer design is pretty awesome. The key setup is very ergonomic, and the touchpad button setup is good. I had an HP-Mini, and the touch pad buttons were integrated with the actual touchpad, and it made browsing with touchpad clicks turned on impossible. Also it's very durable. I've already dropped it getting out of my car a few times. (I'm clumsy)

Cons:

1. Only two antenna cables, so if you are wanting to upgrade your wireless card to something awesome, don't. If you really want it that bad, you will have to install a third antenna yourself.

2. This computer requires Windows 8, not that it is really a con, but I really wanted to use Ubuntu 12.04. However, Ubuntu's proprietary drivers are nonexistent for the graphics card. In fact, the drivers for the graphics card are shady at best. When I put a fresh install of Windows 8 on the system, I could not install the drivers from the Acer website using the ATI catalyst installer. I actually had to go into the device manager, remove the windows display driver, and manually install from the driver folder. (Windows 8 x64 Media Center)

3. 1080p web stream is non-existent. The video will shudder. I recommend keeping it at 720.

Other Thoughts:

UEFI bios is enabled, and no selections will post when booting your computer. In order to access the bios, repeatedly press F2 at boot. Once in, you can change your bios settings from UEFI to Legacy. This will enable you to see the boot commands AND it will allow you to install a fresh copy of Windows or another OS. You MUST change the settings to Legacy, or you will not be able to install a fresh OS.

Battery life is usually lower than what the battery icon says on the desktop. I've been using a Momentus XT 750 to test for speed, and my battery last about 3 hours max with constant web browsing. I get about 2 hours with video playback. However, I will have to post battery life with the 1TB WD Blue since it is a less power hungry drive.

*** I read reviews on all the netbooks, and this one caught my eye. I shopped around a little bit, and I found it at Wal-Mart for $180. I could not believe it. You won't find a better netbook than this for that price. ***

Wecam, 15.6" screen,intel P6200 duo core, 4G Ram and 320 HD... great laptop! I use it for basic stuff: email, internetj/research, download music and that is pretty much it. I don't game at all. This is my first laptop and you need to understand that my old computer (6 years old) was a Pentium 4, 80G HD, 512 Ram. I've had this ACER for a month now and I am more than pleased with its performance. Speed is great. Screen is great. Keyboard is great (I never have to worry about my wrists accidently hitting the house pad), mouse pad is great. I haven't tried the webcam yet. Speakers are weak but I don't use my computer to listen to music. I bought this laptop for $379.00 with free shipping in early February. Too cheap. I wonder how much the workers in Asia are being paid to make them??? :(

This is my second Acer Laptop, my previous laptop was good but this one is great. I just use my laptop when I am traveling, it has WiFi, keyboard has a very good ease of use and the 15 in screen is wide enough that I can watch movies and work without any eye strain, battery life is good at least 3.5 hours. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good inexpensive system.

I actually bought the VPC-F121GX from a known member-only warehouse. For $1,099, you get Win7 Pro instead of Win7 Home on F121FX (note the slight model difference). However, I bought the display unit for another 10% off since that was the very last unit they had.

I love the feel and layout of this Vaio keyboard. The brightness control of screen is also very user friendly because it adds automatic brightness adjustment in addition to the user defined brightness level. Initially, I was fooled into thinking the LCD is defective/infurior because it is very dim and I had already turned the brightness to maximum. By accident, I tunred on my desk lamp which shined brightly right onto the LCD, BANG, Vaio automatically cranked up the LCD brightness to compensate for the extra lighting from desk lamp. That's when I realized this feature, which I came to love. With other laptops, I often had to manually adjust LCD brightness based on the ambient lighting condition. keyboard light also turns on automatically if it detects that the surrounding is too dark.

The other thing I really like about this Vaio is that it's probably the lightest in its class. It probably is also the thinest and smallest it its class. Overall, I love the user experience of this Vaio.

I am taking 1 star off due to the price. I think the price can be a bit cheaper. Then again, Sony products tend to be costing just a bit more than other brands.

The hardware configuration of Vaio matches better on how I use the laptop. However, it isn't the best bang for the buck. I still think the best bang for the buck is Asus G51JX-X5, which I paid $1,150 recently. However, G51JX-X5 is a gaming laptop and I don't play any games. In the back of my mind, I paid something for the supposedly game-grade graphics capability, which I may never use. That is one major reason that I decided to also buy this Sony Vaio.

If you are gamer, I'd recommend buying G51. If you don't play games and appreciate user experience, buy this Vaio.

I bought my Sony Vaio 9 months ago with an extended warranty. It worked well for 6 months until one day the speakers completely died on me.

I have spent the next 3 months trying to get Sony to repair the laptop for me. I spent the first month just on the phone, trying to convince tech support that my computer had had a hard drive failure. Over the next month-and-a-half they had three appointments where they sent people over to repair my computer. The first time they replaced the speakers, the second time they replaced the motherboard and the third time they replaced the sound card. All three attempts were unsuccessful; the sound still did not work.

My computer is now at a repair center. I have no computer to work on right now (I had to borrow someone else's computer to write this review).

This is my experience with Sony Vaio. Maybe you'll have a better one. Who knows?

I bought brand new last July. It never worked quite right. The cursor jumped everywhere so I bought a keyboard. It helped a little but sometimes the cursor would open another application or close the application I was using. In Oct I had to replace the hard drive. In Feb. it died. No power, nothing. Eventually a tech came out and replaced the mother board but the hard drive was dead again. I sent it to San Diego to get repaired or replaced. Over 2 weeks later they called and said they were going to replace it. I got the replacement, barely an upgrade. Customer relations was never very helpful throughout the process. I had to write a letter to a VP in San Diego to get things done. Would not buy another Sony computer. Too many problems and they will keep replacing parts until the warranty runs out and you will have to pay.

I am not a gamer and and do not do things that are very hard on a computer but everything we have tried worked great.! Acer TimelineU M5-481T-6670 14-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

Wow. Where to begin? First, this computer is the perfect size for mobility. It's thin, fairly light (not super light, but lighter than most laptops) and sleek. The screen is really really bright. The backlit keyboard is perfect for me since I work night shifts from home on the computer, and the keys are perfectly spaced. The battery is as good as advertised. Fully charged, I get a full 8 hours of constant use out of it. That's having several different web pages open, doing downloads, and listening to music. The processor is plenty good if you're not playing high-end games, and the 6GB of Ram enables me to keep lots of things open but not have anything glitchy happen. The computer has been on my lap with a blanket covering my legs for the last 8 hours while I was working and when I reach under to touch the bottom, I can barely feel any heat.

Other things that make this stand out: 3.0 USB ports. No matter WHAT you buy, get at least one of those. There's no comparison to how fast they upload media, images, etc. The touchpad isn't annoying like I thought it was going to be. It instant on works amazingly well. It's fast to load anything, and even runs the internet more quickly than my old laptop. Plus, it's ACER so you know the parts are high quality. The price is outstanding for an Ultrabook as well. I did a week's worth of comparing and built a spreadsheet with what I wanted. This had it all. I was very pleased.

I've only had this laptop for a day now so I will update if any problems do come up. For the price (with the current $100 gift card) it was a good deal even though this is the base model. I don't play games and just wanted something for music and internet.

It is heavier than it looks to be but you do get the DVD drive so it was worth that weight added. It feels sturdy and I don't notice any flexing when I pick it up on one side. The finish is not my favorite and around the screen is kind of rubberized which I guess is better than a glare from the screen (or keys). The keys do have a light underneath which is nice and it's easy to turn off.

Not a huge fan of the trackpad. It has no buttons for the right/left click and usually when I am trying to left click.. it ends up as a right click. It's a huge trackpad though which is nice. I am coming from a ThinkPad so any trackpad without the trackpoint will take a while to get use to.

The computer itself is very fast and capable of having multiple programs going at once. I did spend about a half hour uninstalling random trials and programs from the computer. I was downloading some programs and doing updates with the laptop on my bed and the bottom did get warm but it wasn't hot by any means. The keyboard stayed cool.

Very happy with the laptop. Love that it really does turn on pretty much instantly if you just have the laptop closed. Boots up incredibly fast. Haven't had any issues with the wireless at all. The only thing that is slightly annoying at this point is the power button. It's not a switch but a button at the right edge of the laptop and it is easily pushed. Sitting on a couch with the laptop on your lap will eventually lead to you randomly turning the laptop off if you aren't careful.

I purchased the Acer TimelineU because I needed a laptop for medical school. This by and large meets and exceeds my expectations. I was a little hesitant because I am not completely familiar with ultrabooks, but I do know enough about PC's to know what I needed it for. The battery life is exceptional and I can go through 7 8 hours worth of lecture (including connection to WiFi at my university) taking notes on PowerPoint and utilizing the internet to find associated information for lectures. The disk space is more than is really needed, and I have yet to get close to using the full 500GB that it has between content that was provided to me from last years class and previous years.

I have only noticed a couple downfalls. If the venting does not have adequate circulation the underside of the base can get pretty hot. Further, when it gets hot if I am running internet based software that streams lectures and I open a new window occasionally it can get choppy momentarily.

Overall, for the price and the function I would rate this a great buy and I am very satisfied with this purchase.

I was worried about getting something other than one of the "big brands" but now I am so glad that I did. I have never owned acer, but had heard good things about them so I decided that at this price it was worth a try. It may not be as light as other ultrabooks, but it is much lighter than my old laptop. I love how the entire ultrabook is metal because it doesn't leave many fingerprints behind. The backlit keyboard works and looks great! The battery life great. The sound is very loud. As others have mentioned the USB 3.0 is amazing to have and is a must on your next ultrabook or laptop. It uploads things very quickly. My only complaint is that the screen will automatically change the brightness to save battery life and I called acer and they told me that there was no way to turn that off, but at least it's helping the overall battery life.

I was considering a true ultrabook from Acer for the same price. That one, the Acer Aspire S3-391-6899 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne), would have satisfied what I needed: inexpensive, basic functionality, compact, with an SSD drive for faster boot-up times. I instead got this one which is not as compact but packs a slightly larger screen with the same resolution, a DVD drive, and the same SSD drive. With a protective sleeve it fits nicely in my carry-on luggage. Also, there was no scrimping on either memory (6G) or the hard drive (500G). The i3 processor running at 1.5MHz is on the low end of performance but is sufficient for what I need. Battery time looks to be at least 5 hours but I have not formally timed it yet. The screen has a smaller viewing angle compared to my desktop but it gets better at full brightness. It's been less than two weeks so unless something happens to it later I'll give it 4 stars now.

Update 1:

The right button on the touchpad was a little balky. It does not respond well when pressed in the corner of the pad. You either have to press hard or move your finger closer to the center of the pad. The left button was more consistent across its operating width. It's not a huge deal since I usually attach a wireless mouse. One more USB port would have been nice.

There was the usual Windows 7 and Intel stickers below the keyboard but the Intel sticker advertises a CORE i5 while the true processor is an i3. I wonder if BMW ever got this wrong with their 3XXi and 5XXi cars.

ASUS B43J-A1B 14-Inch Business Laptop - Black

This is a very well built laptop (edges are round, metal hinges). The keyboard is similar to the Lenovo keyboard and I really like it. I have used the Asus K series, UL series, EEE netbooks and this touchpad is by far the best one of all. This laptop comes with a smooth touchpad (not the dimpled ones) and it works like a charm. The scrolling is very smooth compared to the dimpled ones. Vertical 2 finger scroll allows you to scroll down/up the page and the 2 finger horizontal scroll allows you to scroll horizontally and useful for going through pictures on Flickr or facebook albums. The buttons on the touchpad are also very comfortable and pretty much silent. Compared with the Macbook pro touchpad, this one is not as good but pretty close. It's one of the best for a PC laptop that I've used.

I like how there's a shutter that allows you to cover the webcam for privac. The laptop is slightly thicker than the UL series but it is definitely more robust, especially the entire screen piece. It weighs about 2.5kg but doesn't feel too heavy or bulky to carry around on a daily basis.

The only one issue I ran into so far is the wireless internet connection would randomly disconnect and not be able to detect any networks. I tried a bunch of different things including disabling some of the power management features like some people had mentioned in other forums but it didn't do the trick. I ended up reinstalling the intel wireless driver for this laptop's wireless chip. I am really hoping this will solve the problem because it was driving me nuts. Other than this particular problem there aren't any major issues I've come across.

I added an extra 4GB stick of Kingston ram that was on sale for $35. For the price, you can't go wrong with this laptop. Business grade laptop with an i5 processor, discrete ATI graphics, and a 3 year warranty (including a 1 yr accidental damage, 2 way free shipping), 3 year battery warranty, 2 megapixel webcam.

Pros:

-Best Processor for Price range (i5 2.66 GHz)

-Pretty Good Graphics Card (isn't the best card out there, but plays everything on mid settings with highest resolution, so still looks pretty good)

-Comes with Windows 7 Professional

-Keyboard feels durable, no flex

-7200 RPM Hard drive (boots much faster than my family's desktop)

-not as much bloatware as you'll see from other brands

-hdmi, vga, display port, and eSata ports.

-Recovery discs were easy to burn, not near as difficult as some brands make it.

-Fingerprint reader

-Light and Portable

Cons:

-Only comes with 2 GB of RAM

-has a 3 cell battery (though even on the three cell battery you can still get a good 2-2.5 hours out of it if you aren't gaming)

-has no volume control on keyboard (not a big issue for me, but a bit annoying sometimes)

-the way the Hard Drive comes partitioned (it partitions 25% of the drive for OS and programs [C drive], and then 75% for data [D drive], so unless you want to put more than 75 GB worth of programs on, you'll have to run windows setup and departition the drive, which is not difficult, just do it right after you get it because it will mean a reinstall of windows and you'll lose anything you previously installed)

I ended up buying another 2 GB of RAM for $20, and a 6-cell battery for $75, bringing my total to about $645 for the whole thing. But for the specs that I got even for that price is still a heck of a deal and putting in the RAM was quick and easy and no big deal at all.

I got this Laptop for College and It has been excellent. I do some gaming and as I said, medium settings on high resolutions looks pretty good and is by far better than anything else you'll get in this price range.

Overall the few minor issues I had with it were easily fixed and it has exceeded my expectations in every other way. It is an excellent computer and I couldn't have asked for more for the price.

Buy ASUS B43J-A1B 14-Inch Business Laptop - Black Now

I purchased this computer for my graduate school work ---mainly word processing, working with spreadsheets, and I had intended to watch some movies from time to time to relax. Within about a month, my DVD drive stopped reading DVDs. We re-installed drivers, looked through pages and pages of help information, and couldn't fix it. We are now going to PAY to replace the drive because the company said tough luck --you waited to long to return the computer.

In addition and definitely worse, the entire system restarts unexpectedly about once a week now. Also about once a week, the monitor simply stops working. The webcam only works sometimes, the wireless adapter continually needs to be disabled and re-enabled, the touch-pad often doesn't scroll up and down... this is a TERRIBLE COMPUTER AND I RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE STAY AWAY. Especially if you are looking into purchasing this for use with any important documentation or for your use at an office, this is not a dependable machine.

This afternoon I am going to REPURCHASE Windows so that the large, numerous and useless applications that were pre-installed on my machine are gone, and in hopes that some of these problems will be resolved. Neither the seller nor ASUS will re-install Windows without all of these applications --I am expecting to pay an extra $200-$300 in total so that I can have a useable machine for the simple work I want to do.

Anyone would be better off with the cheapest Dell model out there.

I like this computer. It is a rugged machine with a lot of nice features for a laptop. It has a core i5 processor. It comes with 2 gb of memory but will accept 8 gb and I took the suggestion of others and added the additional memory. It is very fast. It has an extended battery warrant. I am very impressed with most of the features. It only has a 14 inch monitor which is ok with me as I like to use my laptop with an external monitor anyway. However, the laptop sales information states that it comes with a docking station. I did not get a docking station and when I called to inquire about one it appears ASUS does not make one for this model anymore.

This leads me to the downside of this machine. I have had no luck with product support or service from ASUS. The software support appears to be sub-contracted to others who don't have the same pride in the product as I think a true manufacturer's rep would have. It was almost as if the person on the phone with me didn't care whether my problem was solved or not. Tech support is critical for the long-term viability of any manufacturer that intends to stay in business and my experience so far has been to wonder whether ASUS will be around for a long time or not. This to me is a sad commentary because in most respects I think they have a superior product but need to provide better customer service.

I have had this computer for about 6 weeks. The first one I had, had start up problems so I returned it with zero problems and this one replaced it. (Same model) This one has done all I've wanted after the ram was upgraded to 8 gig. The partioning I didn't like, but reading the manual (downloaded on line) tells you how to reboot the system (before you put all of your junk on it) and you can make it into a single "C:" drive very easily. I just upgraded the hard drive to a 500 gig hybrid drive, cloned the old one, and boot time droped drastically. I bought this while COMP USA (Tiger Direct) had them on sale and it has been a great buy so far. Handles my work, movies, music etc all really well. This is my second ASUS and have been pleased with both.

PROS: Solid, fast, does my graphics work well and so far heating is at a minimum.

CONS: A little heavy and the fingerprint/security software is very user unfrienly.

HP G72-260US 17.3-Inch Laptop

Big, beautiful wide-screen. Laptop runs fast, quiet and cool. Windows 7 is a definite upgrade from Vista. I was a little worried about the touch-pad area at first because it has the same texture as the rest of the laptop surface. However, the touch-pad area is fully customizable and adjustable through the menus. The one con I was concerned about before purchasing this laptop was the speakers (Altec Lansing). The speakers are fairly weak, and the sound, like on most mid-level laptops is only adequate. Battery life clocked in at a little over 3 hours. Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase.

I'm just saying. Be careful. I bought this sleek looking laptop from Office Depot. It had all the bells and whistles and the price was $600, give or take a few lunches: webcam, 17" screen, lightweight, windows 7. At home office, and during my 14 day free trial from Office Depot, I found that HP had not loaded my webcam. Next I couldn't find my "insert" button. HP tech support from India(very nice, very professional, and very patient) corrected the webcam and the "insert" button, which is a bit of a pain as you have to depress the shift button and then the "delete" button, even though there is a button next to the "delete" which unequivocally says "ins" but rest nexts to "prt sc" on same button. So, are you with me? Now, I am getting worried that someone in design forgot the insert software and "jury rigged" the delete button to quickly correct. Then,there's the cursor and touchpad. You seem to constantly have to clean your hands for the cursor to move "at will" when you are trying to merrily go about your computer business. Then,yes there's more, in a lamp lit desk office environment you can't see the letters on the keyboard very clearly...could have made the white on black ink bolder to help out aging eyes. Then, the computer started shutting down without my assistance(Computer number one).so computer number one was returned and I was given a replacement. But, alas,same scenario...without the automatic shutoffs...but with continued webcam and "insert" button issues....so, that is why I am packing it up again....14 days is not long enough to find what other bugs may hide in my brand new computer...I have loved HP for many years, so am sorely disappointed that I have been sold two "lemons" to date. I will be glad to retract all of what I have written if HP will let me know "what gives?".

It boots up quickly (not as fast as an apple). The keypad on the side is awesome if you're using it for work. One thing to note however is the speakers broke after about 2 days of use. Everything else works fine though.

The laptop itself is fine, but the real life battery life is about 2.5 hours, NOT the 4-5 hours that HP claims. It has all the specs to be a good laptop (dual core processor, 4 GB of memory) but the mouse pad/pointing device is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING! It keeps doing all kinds of annoying things like zooming in or out, or paging up or down when all i want it to do is move and point where i want it to. And bringing up the Synaptics Pointing Device program and trying to fix the annoying habits was futile. It seems like HP decided the looks of the pointer/mouse pad were more important than it functioning simply and properly.

I was removing a virus from my sister's 2005 laptop the other day and her pointing device was so simple and just did what it was supposed to do. And of course there's tons of annoying software that I don't want pre-loaded on Windows.

VIZIO Thin and Light CT14-A1 14-Inch Laptop

Have had it about a week, I'm writing this review with it. It's super light, boots in 17 secs. The screen is awesome, very bright. I tried an HP folio 13, the screen on the Visio is much better. I consider myself pretty hard to please but for my needs which are simple, very important to me bright screen that's easy to read, good battery life, thin, fast, powerful enough for anything I want to do. This fits the bill perfectly. I have no real need for an SD card. If I need a port it has 2 USB's. I also have and external USB optical drive, but I never needed it. I have it set up just the way I like. There are a few things I haven't figured out. How do I disable the touch pad when typing? I occasionally get "cursor jump". According to the Viso help key there is a way but I can't seem to find it. The keyboard is really light, it take some getting used to. The only other thing I don't like is it's so thin, I sometimes struggle to open it. I imagine this will get better as the hinge loosens a bit. Did I mention I have big hands. Hey I bought it early so I took a chance. I knew if I waited another 6 months I would get a better deal, but isn't that true with all your technology purchases. I have had good luck with my other Visio products and this one did not disappoint me. Thumbs up.

Overall the Vizio CT14-A1 is a solid Ultra book. It is extremely fast, the screen is beautiful and its very light. The design of the laptop is elegant and it is very well built, similar to a MacBook Air (solid aluminum chassis). I installed Windows 8 about a week ago, and its made the laptop even faster. Like others mention, the keyboard is very light and it feels significantly different from the Dell laptop I'm used to. My only real complaint with the computer is also with the keyboard. It has a propensity to double letters and not acknowledge when the shift key is pressed. Other reviewers have mentioned this as well. It doesn't do it often, or consistently, but I do notice it occasionally.

As far as I know the only difference between the CT14-A1 and the CT14-A4 is the windows version. When upgrading to Windows 8 I did have to find the drivers for the wireless NIC by doing a google search and manually installing them. I am also using a USB to LAN adapter to speed up my internet connection, although the wireless also works great.

I was a little concerned about gaming performance due to the Intel 4000 integrated graphics. Overall it's adequate for light gaming. It's runs graphics intensive games like World of tanks at 1600x900 on low settings with 25+ frames per second.

I purchased this laptop in late 2009 for $500.00 brand new. For all its flaws, I could look past them knowing I'd never buy a then new computer that cheap. Not once have I had to take it in for maintenance! It's spared me the grief that a 2 year warranty would otherwise cover. I don't expect to have any serious problems with it. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 7 home premium, and ditch Vista. Mine came with a free upgrade, and it loads much faster.

Pros:

-10-Key pad! (This was what ultimately sold me.)

-Fast loading at startup and online.

-"Classic" desktop theme makes the computer compatible with older games and programs that required Windows XP to run.

-"Energy mode" makes the battery life much last for about 6 hours.

Cons:

-The shell is plastic. Try not to be careless with it.

-Portable, but not lightweight. (6.5 lbs)

-Unplugged, the battery life while internet surfing can barely make it two hours.

-Low end video card. (Nvidia 8200M) Will run "heavy" games like the sims 2, but this is not a gaming computer.

If you get this laptop at a reasonable price I would not deter you from buying it, otherwise choose another laptop. I am not against HP's cause I've experienced others that do not suffer from the same 'defects' as this.

1)Don't put this laptop on your lap, you will get 2nd or 3rd degree burns

2)Do not expect exceptional battery life (although the same can be said about half the pc's on the market today) but expect to be connected to the power cable for the most part

3)It may run slowly at times but to be fair be sure the cause of that is not user based

All in all it is not a bad machine but HP definitely needed to iron out these issues before releasing this product

For the price, I thought this would be a decent buy. The specs looked amazing on paper with a good processor, enough ram and memory. The big screen is nice too. It was nice having the HDMI and also SD/XD/etc card slot. Make sure you get the windows 7 upgrade too, it was well worth it.

Cons: As already mentioned,the battery is poor. I couldn't make it through a 2 hour class without it being plugged in. The battery was shot after a year. The computer itself heated up really fast... faster than any other laptop I have used; a friend told me that HP used cheap hardware for a couple of years, and that is why this model gets really hot. I also noticed early on, that the power supply connection was never secure, it seemed to wiggle easily. I also noticed that the CD drive was really loud, but that is understandable being it is a laptop.

My biggest complaint with this computer is its poor recording capability. This computer wasn't able to record anything of notable quality, from webcam videos to audio from lectures I attended (using one note). It always turned out bad, after multiple calls to customer support, re-installing drivers and updating them again, the problem was never solved. There are also multiple forums about users experiencing the same problems... just look up HP G60 recording issues.

Lenovo U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook

Bought this just before Christmas. It arrived right before New Year's. I started moving my files off my external hard drive to the Lenovo and foolishly thought I was back in business. Wrong. Here are all the problems I confronted in the last 3 weeks. Note that some can be fixed, some can be fixed but instantly revert to how they were before, and some can't be fixed at all.

1) The wifi is shaky. It will connect to some networks, not to others. The computer will slow then halt, and you can't access anything. Rebooting doesn't work and it has nothing to do with resetting the wireless router.

2) The computer crashes in sleep mode. I'm used to being able to have some documents open, close the screen, open it either 5 minutes or 5 hours later and have my documents all there again. It's fine for a few minutes, but anything longer and it crashes. It's hard to tell when this happens since Windows 8 boots so quickly, I'm not sure if the crash is happening on the restart or during sleep, but regardless, it crashes and you have to restore all your work. Lenovo support walked me through a "fix" for this, but it didn't work. In fact, none of their attempts to fix this worked. When you go to your power profile and select "what computer does when I shut lid" as sleep mode, it still crashes. Lenovo support's great idea was to change it to say "do nothing." Well, then it drains the battery down just as fast when it's closed as if you were working on it. I changed it to hibernate, which worked for 2 days, then it started resetting itself backward to "do nothing."

3) The battery indicator cannot be shut off. I first tried to shut off the low battery indicators in the sound profile, that didn't work. I disabled all sound, and that didn't work. I have to mute all sound which does work, but then you can't listen to music at the same time. It's aggravating that at 10%, your computer will loudly beep every 5 seconds and you can't stop it.

4) The media card reader won't read my SD card. Lenovo support had me reinstall drivers, still won't work. They told me I need to connect with a USB cable and I said this is brand new it should work the way it was intended. They said to send it back to them for a factory reset. Three weeks old and this hunk of junk needs a factory reset? Awesome.

5) Every hour the computer tells me that it's running low on memory and I need to reboot. This is fantastic news isn't it?

6) The keyboard is shaky at best. If you know how to type, you'll be shocked that your fingers keep hitting the wrong keys. There's some give in the whole keyboard that makes it feel like it can easily break. In fact, when I pulled this out of the box, the keyboard shell was actually outside of the computer. I had to snap it back in.

7) Why why why did these idiots mess with the function keys? I had to access the BIOS profile (boot up, hit FN F2) and change the hotkeys to legacy mode. I've worked in Excel for years, and F2 allows you to edit inside a cell. But no, Lenovo had to make F2 the volume key.

I did manage to fix some Windows 8 issues added a shutdown key and modified the registry to get rid of the annoying lock screen because it would hijack a couple letters of your password so you'd get the "wrong password" message every time you logged in. But those two fixes weren't enough to console me through the rest of the drama.

There seems to be a known issue with the touchpad of the U510. Google search query "lenovo jumpy and laggy touchpad" for literally PAGES of complaints. Avoid this model, and potentially the entire U510 series. Below is one excerpt:

"After calling Lenovo about the jumpy mouse experience on the first U510 they sent me, they said they would ship me out another laptop as a replacement.

The new machine arrived, and I took it out of the package and turned it on. As it booted for the first time, I was presented with the standard Lenovo "click Accept" screen (so I could create my Windows 8 account, etc.). I touched the touchpad for the first time to try to click `Accept', and the mouse jumped all over the screen! I couldn't even click the very first button to allow the computer to continue setting up! The replacement exhibited all of the same issues as the first laptop!

So I continue working with it. I tried adjusting all of the sensitivities related to the touchpad, but to no avail. I called my wife over, and we stood back and watched the mouse jitter randomly all over the desktop, find its way to a program icon, open the program, and then drag part of the screen to resize the application. ALL. WITHOUT. BEING. TOUCHED.

We now have TWO laptops sitting on our table, each with the mouse jittering away completely unusable as-is. I have a backup corded USB mouse that I am using in the meantime, and the only way I can prevent the machine from randomly clicking and dragging things across the screen is by physically disabling the touchpad using the F-keys.

And I tried everything to fix it: uninstalling the drivers. Reinstalling the drivers. Trying the drivers from ELAN, as well as Synaptics. I tried working with the Device Manager, and with other Windows 8 settings. No solution.

I have to send the first one back, and the second one will follow.

Lenovo, what are you going to do to fix this? I have been a loyal customer for years, and my confidence in your products is severely shaken. When I called the customer service representative the first time, I specifically asked: "Is this problem typical for this model" and I was told "No". Two unusable laptops in a row, now. And as the second one was on its way to me, I was shopping around for other laptops on your website (Yand Z-series)... but I refuse to get ANYTHING from Lenovo since they all seem to list "standard trackpad" as the mouse input.

Unbelievable. What will you do to salvage your reputation? Unless something is done, and quickly, I cannot vouch for your products to my friends or family ever again."

After a month, I thought I fixed it with Lenovo support, but the laptop's wireless adapter stops functioning occasionally after being asleep or off. The only way to fix this issue was to restart the computer, hoping that it would function correctly upon restart--and sometimes it wouldn't. Another issue was that the laptop would shut down instead of go to sleep upon closing the lid (even though the settings were not set to do that). I thought I solved this issue by installing Lenovo drivers and windows updates, but it turns out that wasn't the case. Finally, the brightness indicator did not function correctly--leaving the brightness fully lit when the indicator showed it at half, etc.

Overall, I had purchased this laptop and then exchanged it for a new one when I ran into issues with the first. Turns out, it seems that every one of the laptops have issues like this. In the end, I decided to return and go with a different brand that I've used in the past that I believe is more reliable. Once Lenovo can start proving their consumer lines like they can with the ThinkPad, then maybe I'll pay attention. Until then, consider me a non Lenovo-fanboy.

There are so many good things about this computer but I can't understand why Lenovo would release it with this keyboard. The keys have no spring in them & it sticks. The mouse pad is worst. If they couldn't match the Mac pad why not just leave the standard Lenovo mousepad? I'm going to look for another option maybe next year they will fix these kinks. The size, weight & keyboard lights are great... Stinks that they took cheap route on the keyboard & mouse pad.i

I got this product because I was looking for a thin laptop with good capabilities. I especially liked the fact that this laptop looked like a mac without the expensive price. However, I got home and whenever you shut off the laptop the wireless disconnects and it doesn't recognize any wireless networks unless you are within a few feet away from your router. Apparently this is a defect that these laptops have and I am not the only one with this problem. Other than that this laptop is ok. I did notice that the picture quality is just okay and its very pixelated.

The bottom line is that I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone unless you are going to be using it within a few feet from the router.

Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7390 17.3-Inch 3D Laptop (Black Widow Styling in Diamond-Textured Aluminum)

I just have to briefly review this laptop to put some of the bad reviews at bay. I just got this baby yesterday and it has blown me away. The screen is brilliant, the speed is unreal, and the 3D is awesome. Even the speakers are top notch. I'll gush more about it later, first I want to let future buyers know the few minor quirks:

Yes, the secondary hard drive makes a small clicking noise. However, what you will want to do ANYWAY when buying such a rig, is replace the PRIMARY hard drive slot with a solid state drive (I used a 240GB Intel 520). THEN, put the original primary drive (the hybrid one) in the secondary slot. Now, enjoy face-melting mind-bending speeds without any clicking noise. Now your boot time is maybe 10 seconds with a fresh windows 8 install.

Yes, battery life is very short. It is not unexpected with such a powerhouse of a computer. If you need to go more than probably 2 hours without an outlet, this beast is not for you. This is not an ultra-portable machine. It falls more in the desktop-replacement category.

Yes, you can watch your 3D movies (even MKVs) with this laptop. You will probably want to follow a brief tutorial (google iradar mkv 3d nvidia) on using an application called Stereoscopic Player. Choose "Sensio" in Layout settings and "NVIDIA 3d Vision" in playback methods. Make the video full screen with your glasses on and enjoy. Nvidia also offers an application to play 3d video.

I will update this review with any other notable findings that have not been mentioned by other reviewers.

UPDATE 1: I have been casually using the laptop for a couple weeks now. I want to note a couple cool things. The "Qosmio" on the back of the screen glows red in the dark which I JUST noticed. The screen is REALLY bright. On maximum brightness, it is brighter than my 58" plasma TV which is on vivid setting. The laptop has not gotten hot like I thought it might, even after hours of watching 3D video. However, I have not tested the temperature with intensive gaming which could produce different results.

I think it is important for future buyers to really consider the size of the laptop, as well as the massive charger when considering this machine. It is considerably heavier than the average laptop, weighing in at 7.5 lbs. You will almost certainly need to carry the charger as well, so add another 2 lbs. More to come later.

I got the Qosmio laptop. Few weeks back, and I'm quite impressed with it. Its pretty damn fast when its starts up and takes you straight into the main menu where you can select what you an to do. I always been a fan of Nvidia graphics, and playing the high-end games like Crisis 3 on it doesn't pose any issue on the unit. It'll get hot while running games like that mainly because of all four processors are running. But if you want to keep it cool, I suggest buying a cool in pad designed for gaming laptops. These things deffinately do a god job sucking that hot air out from beneath it. I would choose this gamin g platform over Alienwhare anytime.

I bought this computer because I wanted a 17" with 3D capability and blu-ray viewing. To me it seemed like Toshiba has some of the strongest processor specs for a good price. I like to keep a laptop for 4 5 years so I did not want some underpowered processor which becomes obselete quickly. I looked at Dell and HP and settled on this unit.

The first unit I bought directly from Toshiba. This one was defective because the 3D did not function properly. Toshiba online direct support diagnosed a defective graphics card so I returned the unit. Now I am leery of Toshiba quality because I had bought the predecessor of this computer in 8/12 (the q7290), and this also was completely defective. Despite 2 duds I wanted to buy a Toshiba for the processor (i7 3630, price, blu-ray, and 3D. I could not find another major manufacturer offering all of this. I also liked the Toshiba website because to me it seems much clearer in terms of the specs of the computer and other details.
