Pros:
world-famous, excellent quality FULL-SIZED KEYBOARD (=essentially Lenovo built an ultra-portable road-warrior around a regular-sized keyboard sans dedicated numeric pad which is available as accessory)
COMES WITH ULTRABASE w/ DVD-RW dockin station (model #32492FU from J&R, at least) included in the box ($200 savings!)
Ultrabase can charge a second battery and sports loads of extra ports while does not block any on-board ones
runs COLD, even after 5+ hours
netbook-class dimensions and battery life but much faster than a netbook and it can pretty
very good battery life/CPU performance ratio with mid-range battery and fast (i5-540) CPU combo: I regularly score above 5 hours on WiFi with medium-light usage (VPN Client connected, putty/SSH, Firefox + Chrome, both running 10+ tabs and loads of plugins including Flash Player etc)
good weight at 3.xx lbs w/ 6-cell battery
Windows 7 Professional license included
decent-sized 320GB hard drive
finally a 'reasonably slow' integrated (on-die) Intel HD graphics core
full Intel vPro stack including vT-d (DirectIO) means future Citrix XenClient support (launches in October 2010)
excellent security: fingerprint reader, Intel AMT, optional encrypting hard drive upgrade
excellent status lights with proper 'icons', readable even with closed lid
very convenient, very useful ThinkVantage Tools: all updates, profiles, locations, warranty, support issues etc can be accessed by the push of a button
dedicated hardware buttons all around: radio on/off/ volume mute/down/up, ThinkVantage Tools button to access everything else
usual unbreakable ThinkPad chassis (though feels a bit less sturdy than old IBM ThinkPads)
mile-long list of options (accessories, warranties/support, upgrades etc)
and of course, built-in ThinkLight, a switchable LED light source for nighttime typing, checking card numbers etc! :)
Cons:
2GB memory -> Windows 7 Pro 32-bit preinstalled, you need to reinstall from scratch to get 64-bit (serial works for both)
no bloatware (no, ThinkVantage Tools are NOT bloatware)
wimpish battery life with 4-cell -> only buy it with 6-cell!
9-cell gives great battery life but stands out in the back and pushes the weight well above 4lbs
rather craptastic LCD colors out of the box -> run a calibration tool, it makes a difference though viewing angles etc won't be better (cheap screen panel tech:
X201/i is 'only WXGA (1280x800), not available with WXGA+ (1440X900) -> only ultra-light X201s got it but then say goodbye to webcam... dumb compromise?
personal grievance: Fn button is outside instead of Ctrl... aaahhh, you shouldn't use anything other than ThinkPade, period. :)
Summary: for $1,200 it is the best all-around ultraportable road warrior with the most power and longest battery at the same time.
PS: make sure you check your warranty status because J&R apparently screwing around with your dates, mine came with a June 2010 warranty start date, that's a 2-months loss right there... just contact Lenovo and fax them your actual invoice, they will fix it (takes some time.)
Warning: if you want to upgrade your warranty to ThinkPad Protection (accidental damage etc) you MUST add in the first 30 days!
Dell XPS X14Z-3846SLV 14-Inch Laptop 8GB 750GB nVidia Graphics Win7 (Elemental Silver)

Cranked it up and installed Lightroom 3.6. Everything was good until I started editing and realized how TERRIBLE the screen is. It's probably the worst laptop panel I have ever seen or used. The gamma was horrible, contrast, brightness, etcEVERYTHING. I tried to adjust all of these things and nothing worked. Long story short, I sent it back and now have another Mac. There is also a ton of pre loaded gadgets that are Apple App wannabes. The thing about Apple is that you can select the ones you want installed. With this Dell it was just loaded with crap that I didn't want. There is a processor performance one that was always running in the top corner for no reason.
I'm done here with this as it just makes me so angry. Don't get this laptop.Bought the XPS X14z last week at Staples. Retuned it today. Upgraded to Win 7 Pro and installed Office 2010. This is when I discovered the key to eject the DVD didn't work. I went up to Dell and downloaded the latest BIOS and Chipset but still wouldn't eject the DVD. I upgraded every driver on the webside, but the eject key still didn't work. Tried a few suggestions I found on line, but they didn't work either. Discovered that this eject key is a problem and Dell has no solution except to replace the keyboard. You can work around it by right clicking on the drive and ejecting. This works, but who wants to be bothered when the slot key should work. I went to Staples and the IT guy tried to get DEll to replace the machine because it was determined the keyboard had to be replaced. I had purchased a 3-year in store warranty but the machine had the original Dell warranty which was depot. Was told it would take 10-15 days to pick up and return. Got my money back on this dud. I agree with others that Dell is trying to make their smaller laptop look like the Mac Air Book. Not in the same league with Apple.

I use this computer to push word, excel, powerpoint, photoshop, illustrator all at once sometimes. It handles the job. I also edit hd video for personal use. It does the work for a laptop at this price. I move my laptop every single day, and it holds up. However, I regret not buying the I7 processor, but it was an extra 300 dollar computer at the time. I got this xps for 900.The screen is super shiny, and at my work it was destroying my eyes. At home no problem. I ended up buying a matte screen protector to make it bearable. Overall, it's not a bad computer. I like all of the functions. If you prefer matte screen, buy samsung's computer. Almost bought that one, but it was more expensive, with only one memory slot. Oh, and usb is only in back. That is somewhat frustrating. Could be better, but for what's inside this bad boy, the price is very reasonable. You can buy two of these computers for what a Mac would cost with the same options, and hp and samsung all have different problems or qualities, depending on your needs.
PS. Personally I like HP best, but the design was not optimal for my travel needs. Already broke one screen hinge on old HP because of its poor design (screen doesn't sit flush.I brought this laptop directly from DELL. I am totally dissatisfied with this Laptop. I owned couple of Inspiron, XPS15 and this new XPS 14z. Let me explain pros and cons of this laptop.
Pros:
1. Good looking laptop dell ever made. (At last Dell find a good laptop designer)
2. Aluminum body
3. Can be used in lap (not generating too much heat like dell's all other laptop)
4. i5 & i7 processors
5. Easy to carry and light weight
Cons:
1. Bad screen quality: Before I order I didn't check the color quality in this laptop, because I trusted dell that they will deliver the best. In a laptop we always look at the display to watch/work/play. If the quality of display is poor then laptop is useless irrespective of its style. This laptop has WLED and lowest quality display dell has.
Ref: (...)
See the color Gamut.. it is just 45% That means this one can't represent good picture at all. This display is not anti glare. SO WORST DISPLAY + GOOD LAPTOP = WORST LAPTOP.
They could have use RGB LED and I expected 95% Color Gamut as my XPS15 do..
Without a good display this laptop will fail. I am not talking about resolution... The quality of display.. this display can't be used for multimedia or graphic design.
2. No Blu-Ray drive
BAD WEBCAM... CAN't use it even for video chat... VERY POOR QUALITY.
3. Only 2 USB slots.. 1 USB2 & 1 USB3.
4. Don't have high-resolution LCD. World is going towards retina display dell still hangs around 720p.. what a shame???
5. Dell downgraded support to mail in service.. You need to pay for basic support. I don't know why dell is doing this...
6. Not able to configure the laptop..(in dell website) Or don't have wide choice in the selection menu (in dell website).
7. No windows professional/ultimate to choose...
8. So many pre-installed junk software in this laptop
9. Not tuned for performance..
10. User can't replace battery.
11. Issues with Wi-fi card
Dell accepted that this laptop doesn't have good display.. that is because to to reduce its thickness.. for me that is a worst decision...
Ref:
My verdict:.. This laptop is good for carry around and style. But I won't recommend this laptop to anyone because of bad display quality (which won't reproduce color and take all the glares) . If you don't worry about size XPS15 is the best for graphics and performance.. but you can't use it in your lap...
Other thoughts: Hope dell will include good quality display (RGB LED) and Blu-ray in their next xps models:I am an online student and I enjoy online gaming. I needed a fast performing computer to satisfy my need in the virtual world. I bought this computer 3rd party that was my first mistake x,x dell's warranty doesn't cover 3rd party resale. I had the computer exactly one week. I was working on a paper for school when all of a sudden it froze up and I got the blue screen of death. After that it wouldn't come back on. After a lot of tinkering I was able to get it to the bios to run some diagnostics. After 12 hours of running scans it came back with six error codes, that summed up to I received a computer with a bad hard drive. Thus I lost all my work. I did some research and found that this is not the first time XPS has had hard drive issues. A couple of years ago there was a class action suit against them for the hard drive burn out. XPS is an excellent computer...when it works. BUYER BEWARE.

The actual hardware is fabulous -very responsive keys on the keyboard which look like chiclet design to me. The boot and re-boot and turn off times are incredible for this price range. It feels like a well made and well thought out laptop. The only problem I had was the balance on my Podium Cool Pad laptop stand ( ) -the laptop is top heavy perhaps due to the 6-cell battery -and unless balanced precisely it will fall over screen first which is not good for rugged, gaming, dorm room/student use.
The owner set up the webcam, Skype and facial recognition features, and they must be very easy and smooth because I have received no Help! requests, and I hear much laughter from their area.

I bought the toshiba satellite L655-S5150 last February when my old computer broke. I was in a pinch and had to buy a computer that day. I ended up getting this one on sale in the $400 to $500 price range (I can't remember the exact price). I love this laptop. It is by far my favorite computer that I have owned and I have had no problems with it. I like that a numeric pad is also on the key board. My husband ended up getting the same series but a different model than mine and the only difference I notice in his is that his keyboard is backlit. Nice feature, but I wouldn't have paid for it. All in all you can't go wrong with this laptop. I am a full time student and I can keep everything I need on here.Lenovo Thinkpad T430 23426FU 14" Laptop - Intel Core Core i5-3210M (2.5 GHz) CPU, 4GB 1600MHz SDRAM

This will get you noticed in the office if that is important, more important to me are the features. The light up keys, the speed of the processesor, the ram and then there is the screen. Beautiful images. Ok so I sound like an HP paid fan, but while I love their products, I have owned and used other brands and work with Macs all day at the office. So many co workers are Mac fanatics and pay much more for what this laptop delivers. The bang for the buck here is substantial. .
I was concerned moving from a 17 inch screen to a 15 inch but am doing just fine. I did buy an external DVD drive/ burner because of all the files I have at home on disk. But I have only used the external drive once so far and have yet to take it to work.
If you want Windows 8 touch screen capacity then take this model for a spin.New to Windows8 and I love how easy it works on this new HP Spectre. Great laptop. Well done. I would definitely recommend this laptop.

Seller experience: It was a bit confusing due to the fact that the seller sells products on both Amazon and Ebay. I wanted two of these units however one sold on eBay during my purchase of two. I had great feedback from the seller and we cancelled the order and I just had to reorder the one he had left. It was tedious but at least he is up front and honest.

Thank you for providing a top-notch product!Bought this as a refurbished unit as I wanted a spare laptop without Windows 8 to put in the closet. This one has every feature and performance range that I need. It was less that $300.00 from a highly rated Amazon seller. The unit arrived in a couple of days. There is no way I could tell that it was ever used. No blemishes, dust or wear and even the little rubber feet on the bottom were unmarked.

This computer came to us and malfunctioned from day one. The screen goes blank constantly. It will just go to white. If you gingerly get into the proper position it may work for a few minutes at a time. Customer service is ok they tried to fix it online but failed. The original dealer would not take it back so we will have to send to the company to have it fixed. We will have to pay for shipping one way. My wife is using it for school now so we will have to wait for semester break to do this. They do not have any local service option. Windows is terrible on this machine but that is not the machines fault.Read Best Reviews of Lenovo - 15.6" Ideapad Laptop - 4gb Memory - 320gb Hard Drive - Black Here

In my opinion, if you get this laptop for under $600 w/tax, pat yourself on the back. 500 gig hd and 6 gigs of memory is sufficient for most users. Personally, I enjoy the SD slot, makes the transfer of files a breeze. Pop the SD card into the slot and bam! there's instant access to media. Awesome. BTW, Windows 7 is easy to use and is pretty much the same as XP (don't stress you'll laugh; 7 is very easy to use). Love that the laptop looks expensive but not super expensive. Perfectly "blending" (not too expensive, not too cheap) laptop for any pc environment.
The blue ray dvd player is great (little loud when playing) but for the price, noise is expected. The springboard to the keyboard is a little sticky. This too is something that is to be expected with price. Simple solution and cool; upgrade to the Microsoft wireless keyboard I reviewed. Touche.
Grab that $500 you've saved since reading my review on dumping AT&T. (Yes, I bought this lappy with the $ I saved dumping them). Be patient and search for this on sale. Order. Enjoy your new laptop which didn't empty your wallet.
Update: Used for over a month and still love this laptop. Connected a really old printer and the laptop downloaded the driver before I knew it! One of the best purchases I've made this year and worth the money.Bought two of these for Graduation gifts for my kids. I was threatening to take one of these for my own. Super fast, huge bright screen, and a built in Blue ray. You really can't go wrong.I bought this laptop at the beginning of July (2012). It is now almost the beginning of December (2012)and after 5 months of using this laptop almost 5 months I now feel that I can review it fairly. I read one of the reviews stated that you could not control contrast, but 2 keys and 3 keys from the escape button on the top left is a small beam and a large beam icon on each which changes the look of the display and perhaps the reviewer just needed to adjust the display. Other reviewers wrote about the battery life.I usually have mine plugged in because I have a terrific laptop table that I keep by my chair and once in a while I unplug to let the battery drain down. I AM really glad I waited to write my review, because I live in New Jersey and we lost our power for 2 full weeks and didn't have a whole lot of gas in the car, so we pretty much stayed home. Since we do have a Starbucks (internet hotspot) about a mile away,I was able to spend some time on the computer and fully charge the battery. On the other days I could go and play some already downloaded games (without electric, our home internet router would not work)in between reading my Kindles. Over the course of two weeks I did this several times. I believe that the battery lasted close to 3 hours, which is reasonable for this size laptop (17.3"). I do not feel that this unit is "delicate" (translation:cheap feeling) as one reviewer thought. I have an HP All-in-One wireless printer system. This laptop set it up automatically ready to use. I didn't have to do anything. I make my own greeting cards it works great with that program. I like to play games and they play without any glitches. The display is clear and bright, I've never had to adjust it. In all, it is a good computer especially for the price (although I DID pay quite a bit less for mine at the time through Amazon!). The 500GB hard drive is good (up from the 350 GB on my old laptop) and I also have an external hard drive to store pictures. I would recommend this to most average laptop users. This product is ok, not great! The webcam is crystal clear, the keys are easy to use, the screen is awesome and the appearance is great. However, the touch pad is somewhat stubborn at times. I have only been using this for three days and i am second guessing my purchase. The battery last for 1hour and that sucks, its like its an old battery. The computer also feels very delicate and as such, you have to treat it like an egg. Its a good computer but i think without good battery life and reliable touch pad, its just half way there.Right out of the box, the left mouse button was broken. It sticks easily and the spring is either worn out or completely ruined. It barely clicks. Compared to the right click, using the mouse is such a struggle I'd rather use the touch pad to click...
Secondly, the display driver fails catastrophically every 2 minutes or so. I have tried for months now with updating my windows updates and making sure the drivers are current and asking online how to stop this from happening with no solution in sight.
If I could, which I don't think I can now that I've owned the laptop for a few months now, I would return it and do it all again and buy a mac or a different brand. This laptop is terrible and I'm sad that a refurbished product passed inspection in this horrible condition which says how much the seller really looks into a laptop before selling it.
