Toshiba Satellite P755-S5274 15.6-Inch LED Laptop (Black)

Toshiba Satellite P755-S5274 15.6-Inch LED LaptopI purchased this laptop 6/30. I received and un-boxed it 7/5. It is well-equipped for the price.

Positives

-The 2nd Gen Core-i5 has excellent benchmarks, comparable and even better than some 1st Gen Core-i7. (See Passmark Benchmark ratings)

-The video card puts out 1080p video without issue. It is not really capable of doing any gaming but that is to be expected at this price from the Intel HD 3000.

-For the price point the theoretical specs are fabulous, hence my purchase and excitement upon arrival.

-It comes with a full size keyboard built in which I enjoy. The sizing and spacing is all acceptable although the backspace is a touch smaller than I would like.

As far as negatives are concerned,

-The webcam is horrendous, I mean, it works, but the resolution and video quality is pretty shameful. I knew this going into the purchase and was willing to accept it, but if you are hoping for a decent integrated webcam this is not a computer for you. Of course you can always get a very high quality external webcam which will best any internal.

-Toshiba Bloatware, I haven't fully investigated them, but a lot of them are redundant to services that windows provides, or just excessive little power hungry toys. Thus far I do actually like the extra power settings, but that is the only one among many.

-Other Bloatware (Extra links to install trial programs...etc)

Now, the reason for 1-star.

The laptop I received on 7/5 was defective. The audio card integrated on the motherboard was deemed defective by Toshiba. Of course Toshiba customer support made me re-install the driver, and "revert to factory settings". I found this excessively annoying as I has just opened the box and reverting to factory settings wouldn't do anything. Regardless the problem remained and they agreed it was defective and told me I could send it to a repair facility (a brand new laptop? and wait a few weeks, i think not). Or Amazon could send me a new one. I have had better dealings with Amazon than Toshiba so I opted for a replacement. Props to Amazon for the prompt replacement (it arrived within 24 hours). Now, believe it or not, the 2nd laptop is also defective. I then had to call Toshiba again to inform them of this. They didn't seem to find it odd that two of the exact same computers are both defective. Anyway Amazon is refunding me the money and I intend to get something else. Preferably not Toshiba despite my previously high impressions of them.

I would be interested to know if anyone else is having these issues. For anyone who may be skeptical as to the fact that two computers are both defective let me assure you sound was tested with several samples of audio from the HD, and the internet. It was also tested on both computers using the laptop speakers, Sennheiser Headphones, and a high quality system with Polk Audio speakers.

Bottom Line:

The specs are great, but I cannot recommend a computer that has come defective 2/2 times. Once is acceptable, it happens, but twice is not acceptable and both Amazon and Toshiba should be ashamed to be selling faulty merchandise repeatedly.

[UPDATE]

After receiving a third defective laptop I have ordered a Lenovo from Best Buy. I cannot fathom that nobody else is having this issue. This has been tested on numerous receivers, numerous cords, numerous speakers. I have had friends with me to verify that I am in fact not going insane, and Toshiba has verified they are all defective. The error occurs upon setup without changing factory settings at all.

Stay away.

In other news the touchpad is definitely a little far to the left and while typing I often touch it with my left palm. Minor issue though.

Bear with me here folks, I'm still trying to pull together my thoughts on my brand new laptop here, consider my review a "first draft". :)

Received this laptop early this morning. My first impression is pretty good, but I've only been with it for a few hours thus far. I've surfed around online some, streamed some HD video, played a couple games, and removed a ton of bloatware.

Was a little worried at first, because the first boot-up took quite awhile, but once I removed some bloatware, shut down, and booted up again, it's ready to go within 20-30 seconds. After running it for 2 hours straight, mostly surfing around online, it's not hot enough to even call it warm, so it should be good about keeping cool. The fan seems to come on pretty often, but it's not very loud, it's mostly just the sound of air moving in and out. Wireless internet seems to work perfectly, and I easily connected to my network.

I actually quite like the touchpad on it, which is strange for me to say, because I'm picky about touchpads. I think it works well, and it's slightly textured, but not overly so. The keyboard seems nicely built for a laptop too.

I don't own much in the name of games, but I've played some Sim City 4 and The Sims 2 on high settings without any hiccups. HD video streamed smoothly as well.

Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase. I'll be updating this review once I spend more time with it and finish getting my thoughts together.

Edit: Okay, so I never updated my review, too lazy to do it. However, it is now February 3rd 2012, and this computer is still up and running like new. I've owned it for 7 months and I have had no problems, even though I run it about 7 hours everyday. It continues to run cool, fast, and with no issues at all.

This is my first laptop, and even though I've only had it for 9 days, I believe I've drawn a conclusion already.

Pros: 6gb ram and huge 640gb hard drive

Extremely smooth Youtube video playback

USB 3, Bluetooth 3, Wireless B/G/N, HDMI and VGA out

Quiet

Great battery life (in my opinion?)

The "chiclet" style keyboard is incredibly easy and satisfying to type on. The keys give off a satisfying light click, and they're far enough away from eachother so I rarely hit another key.

I have never seen an HD Youtube video play back so smooth before, not even on my desktop with an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250.

Speaking of video performance, Minecraft plays as smooth as my desktop plays it. I have not played other games, but DO NOT buy this laptop for gaming; you'll likely regret it.

It takes 22 seconds from power on (with the BIOS option "Load BIOS onto harddisk" checked), until you get a usable Windows 7 login screen.

The laptop has quite a few ports and features including: USB 2 and 3, Bluetooth 3, Wireless B/G/N, and HDMI and VGA out. Very handy to have and use all of them.

Internet browsing is far from slow, it feels much faster than my desktop.

You can only hear the fan occasionally speed up, if you strain to hear it in a quiet room.

Battery life is awesome, I was able to type an entire 725 word essay from start to finish with 10% left.(3 hours at least, maybe 4. I lost track of time)

Speedfan claims both cores are idling at 109f, but you can hardly feel any warmth from the laptop even after several hours of use.

Display is glossy, vivid and bright. Some may see it being glossy as a con; it's fine indoors, but tough to use outside (I never use it outside).

The numpad is an awesome feature to include, it was one of my main requirements in a laptop.

Windows 7 makes everything feel instant and responsive.

I've never run out of ram with the included 6gb.

Now onto the bad stuff (Minor whining on my part)

Cons: Keyboard is not backlit

Off center touchpad location interferes with typing

Dust magnet

Bloatware madness

Speakers suck(ish)

This laptop has doesn't have backlit keys, not a con if you know how to type; I just always thought they looked cool at night.

Regularly while typing, my hand rests on the touchpad and jumps the mouse around as another reviewer also mentioned. Annoying at times, just reposition your left hand slightly.

Needs to be wiped off daily or it grows a beard of dust. (Or maybe I just need to vacuum my room more than once a year)

Copious amounts of bloatware -some bundled with drivers. Google a program before deleting to make sure you don't inadvertently kill flashcards or the touchpad.(Happened to me)

Extremely slow until you kill off bloatware and stuff you don't plan on using.

As another reviewer stated, I have had the laptop claim it had an hour of battery life left, then 5 minutes later, it shut off. I remember reading through the Toshiba manual, and apparently it has to kind of "calibrate" the battery meter and run itself down once in a while to be accurate; I am guessing this applies to the first cycle especially. It has not done this since.

Speakers are clear, but severely lack bass. Using skullcandy earphones remedies that problem.

The bright Satellite letters and line above the touchpad can be turned off in the BIOS. I believe another reviewer said that already.

I am not a picky person, so these cons don't annoy me enough to be worth subtracting a star. The bottom line is that this is an awesome laptop for everything except gaming. (After you get over the minor quirks.)

I've had this laptop for about two weeks and I love it. It's fast and loaded with a lot of useful features. Multi-tasking, installing programs, removing crapware and transferring data onto this machine have been a quick breeze.

I love the keyboard and number pad. They both have a normal set-up so you don't have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out where a certain button has been misplaced (an issue I've had previous laptops/netbooks I've owned and other models I've tried out in stores). Keys are pretty easy on the fingers and feel nice to the touch. Keyboard is NOT backlit as far as I can tell but it wasn't an important feature for me so no minus marks there.

Screen is crisp and has good contrast; it's not washed out like a lot of laptop screens I've come across in my research. It's viewable from almost any angle so it doesn't need to be at an exact precise angle for you to see the screen well-lit.

Speakers can go pretty loud for laptop speakers. They aren't the best speaker quality but pretty darn good for a laptop.

Unlike previous laptops I've had, this one runs pretty cool. Haven't had an issue with heat at all (even when I've absentmindedly left it running on top of the bed or on carpet). I do feel heat being pushed out by the fan but the system itself remains pretty cool to the touch (ie you won't burn your lap if it's resting on your leg and you'll probably have no need for a laptop cooler fan).

Other people have commented on the placement of the touchpad. This was a concern for me before I purchased it but it turns out that I rarely have an issue with it. Once in a while the touchpad does act up while I'm typing but in comparison to a lot of other models I've tried out it's a pretty minor problem. The touchpad on/off key is conveniently located near the touchpad so it can be switched off right away if you need to do some heavy-duty typing.

Laptop has a high-quality plastic feel (yes, it's plastic). No flexing in the keyboard or case; feels very sturdy. The grooved design all over the laptop is a nice touch that prevents fingerprint smudges.

An added bonus is the free Xbox for students. I haven't received the xbox credit yet. I'v contacted Amazon and they swiftly replied that the xbox credit is on it's way so we'll see how that goes.

It took me a while to decide on buying this laptop since I couldn't find the exact model in any brick and mortar store to try out personally. You can't go wrong with the specs but I would recommend going to an electronic store and trying out similar Toshiba models to see if you like the configuration of the keyboard, touchpad, etc since those are all based on personal preference. I think I tried out P755-S5215 at Best Buy; it has nearly an identical appearance. For the price the specs on this machine are great. No regrets so far, very happy customer.

I replaced an 8 year old Satellite with this computer. This new computer is very quick, keyboard keys have a nice touch. Fairly quite, lightweight and solid feeling. Windows 7 seems to be pretty good.

I find that the dolby advanced audio is not good and distorts music, try turning it off to make your music sound good. Also when you plug your speaker line into the headphone jack, select the headphone option, otherwise the line-in option also takes away from the music.

I was afraid that off center keyboard would be awkward and it is. Maybe I will get used to it. There is very little room for the left palm to rest on the computer and frequently inadvertently touches the mouse pad causing the mouse to do things I don't want it to do.

I chose toshiba again because my previous satellite served me near flawlessly (replaced hard drive once)for 8 years.

Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4310 14-Inch Laptop

Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4310 14-Inch LaptopI got this as a Christmas gift and absolutely love it. Feels great and is pretty fast and responsive. I already have an Ipad so I am very comfortable with the touchscreen feature, having a keyboard and CD drive makes this the all around best option. Navigating between the apps and the internet takes a little getting used to with Windows 8 though.

ACER AS5515-5187 15.4-Inch Laptop Notebook

ACER AS5515-5187 15.4-Inch Laptop NotebookAn excellent machine with 3 GIGS of RAM. Super integrated ATI graphics delivers very high performance. Runs very cool not like old hot Aspire 3000. Came with Vista that was promptly removed and replace with XP. Just a very nice performing cool laptop. I am going to buy a second one.

I've had this laptop for about three months now and have no complaints. I have had several laptops in the past (Toshiba, Dell, HP, Sony, and ASUS) and have to admit that this laptop holds up pretty well with all of those. This thing is great for regular use web surfing, music, movies and some minor gaming. For the price, I think this thing does more than you can ask for. This is a great intro laptop and I love it so far.

Less than a week after purchase I lost the $ key. I contacted Acer, and was told to 'send it in for repairs'. I requested a replacement keyboard instead, and was refused. A local computer store said it would be $200 to replace the keyboard (!). So, I ordered one on Ebay, and did it myself with no problems.

Bottom line... it is a cheap computer. But, if you want something simple and easy to use, it's not a bad purchase.

I bought this Acer 5515 and found that it is not what I expected it to be. I was going to return it but found out after I received it that it was not returnable. The processor is very slow and I do not recommend this for any one who wants to work with flash or even play games! So buyer beware you are not getting a good deal from JC Connections with this product.

The 3630M IvyBridge i7 runs cool and very fast. The entire system is well-designed and the speakers (Bang and Olufsen ICE) sound amazing. I have had no issues running intensive graphics, playing videos and doing video-editing on the laptop. The battery runs for an amazing 3 4 hours, depending on how much I am pushing it. It is easy to haul around, light but well made case. Win8 took time to get used to, but it works very well on here. I would recommend this for anyone. An outstanding value.

First of all: If you buy this laptop, please change the HD by a SSD. I don't understand why Asus includes a HD inside a incredible laptop like this.

With a SSD drive, this laptop is very fast. I can play modern 3D games without problems (X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Civilization V).

But, pay attention! The laptop will burn your legs if you play games with the laptop over them.

It has a very good CPU and GPU and a good chassis. The 1920x1080 display is very good too.

The cam is HD and has a nice quality of video.

Acer Aspire AS5733Z-4477 Laptop Computer 15.6" Screen (Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Dual-Core, 320

Acer Aspire AS5733Z-4477 Laptop Computer 15.6' ScreenThis is a very great laptop for the tasks I put it up to. I use this mostly for word processing and web browsing and am extremely satisfied with this purchase. The processor is great and with 4GB of RAM, this computer is fast. However, be sure to use your own antivirus software and to uninstall the McAfee security software, which slows down the computer immensely. The camera isn't the best but is more than adequate for video conferencing. The addition of the keypad on the right hand side is immensely helpful, especially in Excel spreadsheets. The widescreen is a wonderful addition, and the speakers work well and I am surprised how great of a sound quality they emit. My only gripe is that the touchpad is fairly close to the keyboard, so it is easy to brush it and click out of the text box while typing. In general, this is an amazing laptop and I would highly recommend it for anyone.

Laptop has a good feel to it. Processor seems to work well. The most important thing about computers and laptops today when purchasing is to have a minimum of 4 GB or RAM. This laptop has the 4 GB DDR3 RAM that I require as a minimum. Works like a champ. Great Price for anyone looking to do word processing, surf the web, email, facebook, etc. Not a gaming computer, but worth buying for "normal" use.

The Review:

Good specs. Look for it on sale though. The case is durable. You are able to play "THIS-gen" video games like Mass Effect at a decent clip on High or Medium-High settings.

The memory speed is quite fast, allowing these older games to utilize the 4 GB ram (128mb) dedicated efficiently enough.

It is completely sufficient for any less demanding application. The WiFi has long range.

This is really somewhat of an entry level notebook for home use, however. I am not crazy about the styling. The button for on-off is much too big and is easy to press, so I disabled in Control Panel. I was able to also load Ubuntu release 12.04 Pangolin out of the box with working graphics and wifi. Wow. This model is well supported....

Acer are not the best at product support, but in the 6 mos since I aquired it there were several driver updates, and one for the Bios. The onboard motherboard HM55 is fairly budget and precedes the current architecture graphics Sandy Bridge. This built in graphics are a HD3000 laptop equivalent, slowed down by 1/3 to 800 Mhz motherboard speed.

Since I acquired it, I expanded the RAM to the maximum 8GB. This action is in my opinion superfluous for most basic uses, except for these two factors:

o Ram is unbelievably cheap

o If you are running a 64 bit system, might as well take advantage of it's abilities.

It was as easy as removing 3 screws. It is not necessary to take off the whole back panel as in previous iterations.

The Bad:

Despite the good price to performance ratio and passable-to-decent design, the Aspire AS5733Z-4477 has the following problems.

1) The keys on the keyboard are designed in such a way, that crumbs, seeds and sundries get stuck in it periodically. Purhase canned air, or you might be forced to remove and reattach the buttons to clear it out.

2) The lcd developed severral small (less than a cm long and 1-2 mm thin) areas of fading within a day of the unboxing. As there are only 3 of them, they do not bother me really, so I have not attempted an exchange.

3) The computer often overheats. Mind you, I have never had it do this when it is sitting on a desk, but if it's on my lap and there is anything touching either the side or bottom vent, within a minute it will shut down. This is very frustrating, but if you are used to Acer's low tolerance levels in this area (which have been around for years), you can very much get used to this...

Want Acer Aspire AS5733Z-4477 Laptop Computer 15.6" Screen (Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Dual-Core, 320 Discount?

I purchased this laptop at Micro Center for about four hundred dollars. Being only thirteen, this was the largest purchase I have made.I bought it for school, and it has surpassed my expectations. A friend of mine has the previous incarnation of this laptop, the Acer Aspire AS5732Z, and is very satisfied. Acer is not exactly regarded as a high quality brand, yet once you try them out, you will as well think otherwise. Five months of being beat up class to class in middle school would certainly take it's toll on something, yet this particular laptop is surprisingly resilient. Five months of constant typing, and the keyboard is still in like new condition. I almost purchased the Acer iconia W500, but decided against it because of its TINY hard drive, and only two gigabytes of ram. With windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit, it is certainly more powerful than, say a Macbook of sorts. I mean not to hate on Apple, but their products are designed to be cool, and what is in style; not functiobnal, and certainly not fast. Back to the Acer, this thing is still going strong, and Christmas is coming soon. For the price, you really cannot get much of a better deal anywhere, on anything else. The dual core processor is fast, and allows for very fast boot up time. I am the only one in my grade that has a Windows platform based laptop (The friend with the previous incarnation is seventh grade). Long after I am ready to type notes, all the other kids are just barely even starting microsoft word. I cannot believe that people will buy a Mac, then expect it to perform quickly. For notes, this thing can save, open and edit in a flash. The keyboard has a standard keyboard, but off to the rigt, there is a number pad, you know with the

789

456

123

0. layout

When you want to type quickly, this computer offers very firm keys, that you will know if the input sent or not. I am oh so very satisfied with this machine, and sometimes I catch myself wondering why I had not bought it earlier. This was an upgrade from an Aspire one Netbook, that was a bit sluggish, but did the job nonetheless. I cannot recommend this enough(especially over a macbook).

UPDATE

It is the 28th of December 2012, and that darned laptop just won't quit!! As previous reviewers have stated, it does run warm, and the fan is a little loud, but all considered, it was most definitely worth the purchase. I have taken it on many upon many road trips, getting beat up going down the road, and it has performed flawlessly (Although google chrome does give me problems sometimes).

I highly recommend this laptop, although, the price it seems to be going for now makes it much less of a good deal. That may, however, and unfortunately, be inflation taking it's toll on things.

It is still a great laptop, and I have no regrets buying it over the IConia w500 tablet. You can run High fps games on this laptop, and it barely stutters.

Thanks, A.

Sony VAIO VPCEH37FX/W 15.5-Inch Laptop (White)

Sony VAIO VPCEH37FX/W 15.5-Inch LaptopI am writing this review after a short use as there are not much relevant reviews available. In fact this particular model is not even on Sony's official website. I got it through my Company after an epic fail of Acer laptop within a month.

Here the few quick points to add-

1. This laptop is heavy.. seriously, It is not something to carry on roads or starbucks instead it is good for Home/office use.

2. It has extra numbered keyboard. so if you are used to regular keyboard then you might press wrong keys at times..

3.High performance6gb RAM/iCore 5.. I called sony representative and he told me number in the model tells performance. Higher the number..better the performance... so this machine is highest performer in e series for sony as it is 37.

4. Speakers volume is good for entertainment purpose.

I am generally happy with Sony products. Hope this one will last.. i am really scared to see failure of Acer for no reason. I will add more points based on my experience.

This computer is an outstanding value! You can get the same computer from Sony at a similar price, HOWEVER, here you will not spend the additional costs in sales tax, not to mention the FREE shipping (can vary if different seller than Data Vision)! With 6 gigs of memory, over 600 gigs of hard disk space and an i5 processor you won't beat this deal ANYWHERE, at least not in a higher end model laptop like this one. I really recommend the Sony Vaio wireless mouse in white to go with this, it's a very nice item as well!

After buying another HP to replace a defunct one and having it arrive with multiple software and hardware issues out of the box (it was returned after three days,) I decided to take another look at the Sony machines. This Vaio caught my eye and, after diligent research, I made the purchase.

I should have bought this machine first.

From a sheer looks point-of-view, it's a beautiful piece of machinery. When you turn it on, the functions and internal workings match that external view.

Without going into useless nuts & bolts, let me just say that I couldn't be happier with this laptop after a week's worth of putting it through as many paces as I could.

Five stars aren't enough, really.

I have had this laptop for about a month now and it has worked great for a college student in need of a new computer. I use my laptop constantly and love the fast speed it stays at while I multi-task with 5 or 6 programs running at once with its 6gb of RAM. The keyboard is also extremely easy to type on and the number pad on the right works great for my accounting classes.

The hard shell of the laptop also seems very sturdy which is great because it feels very safe for travel. The design also looks great and many friends have complimented on how sleek it looks.

Overall, the laptop has had no performance issues so far and I am very happy with my purchase. If you are looking for a reasonably priced laptop to use for leisure, I would highly recommend this one. Its fast, easy to operate, and has been very dependable so far.

Lenovo U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook

Lenovo U510 15.6-Inch UltrabookBought this just before Christmas. It arrived right before New Year's. I started moving my files off my external hard drive to the Lenovo and foolishly thought I was back in business. Wrong. Here are all the problems I confronted in the last 3 weeks. Note that some can be fixed, some can be fixed but instantly revert to how they were before, and some can't be fixed at all.

1) The wifi is shaky. It will connect to some networks, not to others. The computer will slow then halt, and you can't access anything. Rebooting doesn't work and it has nothing to do with resetting the wireless router.

2) The computer crashes in sleep mode. I'm used to being able to have some documents open, close the screen, open it either 5 minutes or 5 hours later and have my documents all there again. It's fine for a few minutes, but anything longer and it crashes. It's hard to tell when this happens since Windows 8 boots so quickly, I'm not sure if the crash is happening on the restart or during sleep, but regardless, it crashes and you have to restore all your work. Lenovo support walked me through a "fix" for this, but it didn't work. In fact, none of their attempts to fix this worked. When you go to your power profile and select "what computer does when I shut lid" as sleep mode, it still crashes. Lenovo support's great idea was to change it to say "do nothing." Well, then it drains the battery down just as fast when it's closed as if you were working on it. I changed it to hibernate, which worked for 2 days, then it started resetting itself backward to "do nothing."

3) The battery indicator cannot be shut off. I first tried to shut off the low battery indicators in the sound profile, that didn't work. I disabled all sound, and that didn't work. I have to mute all sound which does work, but then you can't listen to music at the same time. It's aggravating that at 10%, your computer will loudly beep every 5 seconds and you can't stop it.

4) The media card reader won't read my SD card. Lenovo support had me reinstall drivers, still won't work. They told me I need to connect with a USB cable and I said this is brand new it should work the way it was intended. They said to send it back to them for a factory reset. Three weeks old and this hunk of junk needs a factory reset? Awesome.

5) Every hour the computer tells me that it's running low on memory and I need to reboot. This is fantastic news isn't it?

6) The keyboard is shaky at best. If you know how to type, you'll be shocked that your fingers keep hitting the wrong keys. There's some give in the whole keyboard that makes it feel like it can easily break. In fact, when I pulled this out of the box, the keyboard shell was actually outside of the computer. I had to snap it back in.

7) Why why why did these idiots mess with the function keys? I had to access the BIOS profile (boot up, hit FN F2) and change the hotkeys to legacy mode. I've worked in Excel for years, and F2 allows you to edit inside a cell. But no, Lenovo had to make F2 the volume key.

I did manage to fix some Windows 8 issues added a shutdown key and modified the registry to get rid of the annoying lock screen because it would hijack a couple letters of your password so you'd get the "wrong password" message every time you logged in. But those two fixes weren't enough to console me through the rest of the drama.

There seems to be a known issue with the touchpad of the U510. Google search query "lenovo jumpy and laggy touchpad" for literally PAGES of complaints. Avoid this model, and potentially the entire U510 series. Below is one excerpt:

"After calling Lenovo about the jumpy mouse experience on the first U510 they sent me, they said they would ship me out another laptop as a replacement.

The new machine arrived, and I took it out of the package and turned it on. As it booted for the first time, I was presented with the standard Lenovo "click Accept" screen (so I could create my Windows 8 account, etc.). I touched the touchpad for the first time to try to click `Accept', and the mouse jumped all over the screen! I couldn't even click the very first button to allow the computer to continue setting up! The replacement exhibited all of the same issues as the first laptop!

So I continue working with it. I tried adjusting all of the sensitivities related to the touchpad, but to no avail. I called my wife over, and we stood back and watched the mouse jitter randomly all over the desktop, find its way to a program icon, open the program, and then drag part of the screen to resize the application. ALL. WITHOUT. BEING. TOUCHED.

We now have TWO laptops sitting on our table, each with the mouse jittering away completely unusable as-is. I have a backup corded USB mouse that I am using in the meantime, and the only way I can prevent the machine from randomly clicking and dragging things across the screen is by physically disabling the touchpad using the F-keys.

And I tried everything to fix it: uninstalling the drivers. Reinstalling the drivers. Trying the drivers from ELAN, as well as Synaptics. I tried working with the Device Manager, and with other Windows 8 settings. No solution.

I have to send the first one back, and the second one will follow.

Lenovo, what are you going to do to fix this? I have been a loyal customer for years, and my confidence in your products is severely shaken. When I called the customer service representative the first time, I specifically asked: "Is this problem typical for this model" and I was told "No". Two unusable laptops in a row, now. And as the second one was on its way to me, I was shopping around for other laptops on your website (Yand Z-series)... but I refuse to get ANYTHING from Lenovo since they all seem to list "standard trackpad" as the mouse input.

Unbelievable. What will you do to salvage your reputation? Unless something is done, and quickly, I cannot vouch for your products to my friends or family ever again."

After a month, I thought I fixed it with Lenovo support, but the laptop's wireless adapter stops functioning occasionally after being asleep or off. The only way to fix this issue was to restart the computer, hoping that it would function correctly upon restart--and sometimes it wouldn't. Another issue was that the laptop would shut down instead of go to sleep upon closing the lid (even though the settings were not set to do that). I thought I solved this issue by installing Lenovo drivers and windows updates, but it turns out that wasn't the case. Finally, the brightness indicator did not function correctly--leaving the brightness fully lit when the indicator showed it at half, etc.

Overall, I had purchased this laptop and then exchanged it for a new one when I ran into issues with the first. Turns out, it seems that every one of the laptops have issues like this. In the end, I decided to return and go with a different brand that I've used in the past that I believe is more reliable. Once Lenovo can start proving their consumer lines like they can with the ThinkPad, then maybe I'll pay attention. Until then, consider me a non Lenovo-fanboy.

There are so many good things about this computer but I can't understand why Lenovo would release it with this keyboard. The keys have no spring in them & it sticks. The mouse pad is worst. If they couldn't match the Mac pad why not just leave the standard Lenovo mousepad? I'm going to look for another option maybe next year they will fix these kinks. The size, weight & keyboard lights are great... Stinks that they took cheap route on the keyboard & mouse pad.i

I got this product because I was looking for a thin laptop with good capabilities. I especially liked the fact that this laptop looked like a mac without the expensive price. However, I got home and whenever you shut off the laptop the wireless disconnects and it doesn't recognize any wireless networks unless you are within a few feet away from your router. Apparently this is a defect that these laptops have and I am not the only one with this problem. Other than that this laptop is ok. I did notice that the picture quality is just okay and its very pixelated.

The bottom line is that I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone unless you are going to be using it within a few feet from the router.

Sony VAIO CW Series VPC-CW17FX/W - Core 2 Duo- 14- Inch Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) - camera

Sony VAIO CW Series VPC-CW17FX/W - Core 2 Duo- 14- Inch Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 - camera - icy whiteI researched for a while on a laptop, I wanted one that could process very well but also be used for fun on the go. A well rounded laptop without a price that would leave me in debt (being a college student). The Sony Vaio VPCCW17FX, meets all my needs and more.

Pros:

Just about everything, but specifically,

The keyboard: Possibly one of the most comfortable and ergonomic laptop keyboard I have ever typed on, I'm typing this review on the laptop right now. The keys are individual buttons with just the right spacing popped up out of the base of the laptop. It kinda reminds me of the Macbook keyboard. In fact the whole computer looks and feels like a macbook that was assimilated by Sony.

Features:

Blu-ray player with a HDMI output is a nice feature, most likely you already have a blu-ray player if you have a HDTV and are buying blu-ray discs, however its a portable one that you can just hook up to your HDTV and be ready to go.

This model also includes a SD card reader and a HG Duo reader right in the front, very convenient.

Touch pad is also very nice, has a good feel to it and the click buttons are actual buttons so you know exactly when you are clicking things, my only complaint with the touch pad is using the right side to scroll pages doesn't always work but it works well enough.

Intel core duo2 processor is fast makes this computer fly with the windows 7 home premium edition 64-bit default OS, I haven't had any performance issues yet and I was surely putting it to the test installing 3-4 programs at a time while downloading 2-3 more. Not a hiccup while the installations were in progress. Runs games well, on lower settings mainly due to the graphics card being the weakest component in the package for game play (according to the windows experience rating).

The 14.1 inch WIDE screen is beautiful with a LED back light, it doesn't ever seem to heat up, and the core itself stays cool for long periods of time. Some have the opinion that its a little small however I think its the perfect size for a portable computer, if I wanted a large screen I would just hop on my desktop PC

Easily accessible USB ports 2 on the left side 1 on the right, could use more but its pretty good.

It feels good, looks good and has a good weight to it, I've heard some people complain that its too heavy, however if it was any lighter I think it would feel cheap, the only thing that doesn't look top notch are the hinges, however they aren't flimsy or anything like that, and they flow well, so it leads me to believe that its just the light im looking at it in.

This laptop never ever seems to get hot, I had it on for 7 plus hours and it still felt cold to the touch. The only time I've ever felt heat from this laptop was when I was running graphics intensive games, where the left side of the laptop where the GPU (graphics card) exhaust is emitted heat, it got hot but not extremely burn hot, I'd also like to mention that only that part of the laptop heated up and no where else. Also worth mentioning is that when I exited the game, within minutes the GPU became cold to the touch again. This laptop seems to have a very efficient cooling system.

Another thing I'd like to point out that the laptop comes with a free ONE YEAR of TrackItback service from Sony, if you register your laptop with them. Basically you stick a sticker on your laptop saying that if its found to call the number and get a reward for returning the laptop. Its a nice service if you ever foresee yourself misplacing or forgetting it anywhere, although if I found this thing...well ID RETURN IT OF COURSE.

Cons:

Speakers are a bit soft for a Blu-Ray player, even at the max volume, its a bit on the softer side. Not a biggie since I will not be using the speakers for blu-ray playback, a handy set of headphones or ear buds easily solves this con.

Although the finish is beautiful, it makes me nervous to touch the computer, I leave fingerprints everywhere and I'm uneasy resting my hands on the rests beneath the keyboard, because it feels like I'm going to leave smudges.

Battery life is about 4 hours on normal settings (the settings that the computer comes with out of the box. You can choose to boost battery life by changing various settings though, such as screen brightness and the way the computer uses the battery life in order to facilitate faster processing.

Overall the pros for this laptop outweigh the cons, and I believe that its a great buy, especially if you get it on sale. I think Sony hit a home run with this laptop in both ascetics and hardware. Its honestly a powerhouse of a laptop for the price you are paying and I recommend it.

I don't understand why everyone rags on the graphics chipset in this laptop. It really isn't that bad.

Here I some games that I are very playable for me on medium and sometimes even high settings.

-Dragon Age: Origins(medium settings, native res, frame buffer enabled) 20 fps

-Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion(medium-high settings, hdr enabled, 1280x720) 20-30 fps

-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2(high settings with no extras... there are one or two levels that have more demanding lighting effects that will force you to drop down to medium settings in order to maintain a stable framerate) 20 fps

-Crysis Demo (all Medium settings, no AA) 15-20 fps

-Sins of A Solar Empire (Max settings)30-40 fps

-The Sims 3 (Max settings)15-30 fps

I have heard that this laptop will also run assassin's creed on medium with playable frame rate. I have yet to test that claim.

This laptop will play most DX9 games fluently and plays DX10 games often on medium settings. Older popular games like WoW or Guild Wars would run very efficiently on this machine. I ran the crysis SP demo at very playable framerates using all medium settings. If you are a hardcore enthusiast gamer who wants to game in 1920x1080 resolution with x16Q AA all the time, then you probably won't find what you're looking for. However, if you're just an average joe who plays the game because it's fun and not just because it has a crapload of over-done HDR effects and hair splitting anti-aliasing, plus you just want a good, solid, decent machine for the price, then you should totally check out this laptop.

Here are the strengths of this laptop.

-Blue ray drive(and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg...nice)

-HDMI

-Firewire

-EXCELLENT cooling system...this thing stays safe even in the middle of game. Sitting on a pile of blankets.

-Good USB positioning

-Sleek look, very portable

-Card Reader

-Chicklet keyboard keeps cleaner than the other types and looks nice

-Webcam is a nice feature

-Solid build, doesn't flex or snap around much

-CPU is upgradeable

-DDR3 1066 Ram

-Wireless N

-Gigabit Ethernet

-Windows 7

-Bluetooth

-Display looks fantastic...excellent contrast and clarity, very vibrant colors.

Here are the weaknesses of this laptop.

-Battery life is not the worst I've ever seen, but still not especially good unless you put it in battery saver mode...which makes windows 7 look like crap. I think you can upgrade the battery, but I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg from sony.

-Finding driver updates for my graphics was a pain in the butt because sony's website was down for days and the correct driver package for this model is not available directly from nVidia's site.

-Considering that this laptop appears to be fully compatible, a P series core 2 CPU would have been nice. However, the t6600 is decent.

-(This is more a win7 issue, I think) I have trouble loading a desktop contrast/color profile. I always have to reset it...soemtimes it just flat out doesn't work.

-I don't really like how the bluetooth off/on is consolidated into the wireless off/on switch. I would have liked for that to be done separately. But it's a minor thing.

-The graphics do bottleneck when you try to run some games at high settings. But it's a low-profile laptop...what do you expect? It's very good for it's class.

In conclusion: Why do I give this laptop 5 stars? Because in my honest opinion, for the price/performance/quality, these weaknesses really aren't that bad...and they are even things that can be fixed. The CPU, from what I've investigated, CAN be upgraded to a faster one if you want the 1066 FSB and extra cache, the battery can be upgraded to an 8 cell if you want to shell out the cash. Drivers aren't really a huge issue for the graphics if sony would just make sure that their support site works. The graphics do what I want them to do, they run most games on medium settings and are more than sufficient for watching HD movies or Blue Ray.

This laptop was a Christmas present from my wife. It was a wonderful gift. I love this machine. I use it all the time. It is capable of all kinds of fun.

Here are all the things I do with it which work plenty effectively for my needs.

-Home Recording(music, guitars, tracks, etc. using cakewalk and a line 6 pod xt)

-Productivity(writing, document creation for work, powerpoint, etc.)

-PC Gaming

-Networking

-HD Video source(via hdmi)

-Skype Video Conferencing

-Presentation Display via a video projector(powerpoint, gaming, videos, etc)

I wish I'd read more reviews before I purchased my Sony VAIO VPCCW2 series laptop. I bought it new in February 2010, and now I own a very expensive paperweight. I paid for diagnostic at an electronics store and was told the motherboard is out. I called Sony customer service, but they wouldn't even address my issues without an additional $49.95 service fee to run diagnostics and troubleshooting on a laptop that won't even boot up. I use to think paying a little more would get me better quality, but that's not the case at all. Buyer beware...

I just want to address the people who keep bashing this computer and sony products. I have this same computer but in Red since october 2009. I absolutely love this computer and it has never given me problems. There is one trick i've realized with sony computers. You must use VAIO care which comes with the computer. It finds and fixes issues with the computer and prompts updates. You only have to use it when it automatically appears on ur screen. I've found that if I ignore it...the computer starts to act up. If i go ahead and start the VAIO care all the issues go away. I compare it to a whining child who will bother you until they get what they want. I hope this helps anyone who isn't pleased with their sony. VAIO care does wonders.
