Sony VAIO VGN-NW125J/T 15.5" Notebook (2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T6500 4GB RAM 320GB HDD DL DVD-RW Vista Ho

Sony VAIO VGN-NW125J/T 15.5' NotebookPretty much the best purchase I have ever made. Shipping was faster than expected. The item is in better condition then I could of ever dreamed! I thought this laptop was one of those to good to be true items. Well, it wasn't. Buying this reassures any doubts I may have had about buying online from private sellers!

I had this computer for a year and had no problems. I changed it from Vista to Windows 7, and that improved it. It always accomplishes what I need.

Toshiba Satellite C855-S5356 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)

Toshiba Satellite C855-S5356 15.6-Inch LaptopThis computer is good and work is excellent, however the new system (windows 8) is annoying. If you are trying to buy a new laptop that would be a good choice but try to stick with (windows 7).

I love the entire unit except for the key board seems kind of flimsy in its construction. Time will tell. Other wise excellent.

Tupperware computer !, no trims, low quality hardware... all from Dell ?. Unbelievable. What ever happened to Dell. Used to be regarded as a quality hardware mfg. Compare this to Toshiba, Acer, Asus and Sony. Yes, Sony is in a league by itself as far as quality of hardware.

Now if you make mistake entering password too many times, this computer becomes totally unusable !. Why ?.

Because Dell has put passwords on both BIOS and Hard Drive. These 2 becomes activated. Only Dell can undo. I research the internet and read about $200 to unlock by Dell. You can buy this on sale just slightly over the unlocking fee !.

... but if you have one, here is what to do:

1. Enter Bios Setup by pressing F2 right after power on then undo both BIOS & Hard Drive passwords.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5540 15.6 -Inch Laptop (Black)

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5540 15.6 -Inch LaptopSo, this laptop is low priced, but high powered, at least for what I need it to do. I am pretty much like everyone else and just browse the web and check email on this thing and it does the job just fine for that. It is quick and clippy and I absolutely love having a number key pad. My only complaint about this is that it does not have a USB port on the right hand side of the laptop. Why is this important you ask? Mouse. I have a small travel mouse that I usually use with my laptops and with this one, it has to be plugged all the way on the other side of the laptop. It's kind of inconvenient, but not a deal breaker with me.

This would be a great laptop for a kid going off to college or any casual user to just have around the house.

BE WARNED: as with most new laptops these days, this one does not come with installation DVD's. That means that if you get a virus or something, you will not have a way to reinstall Windows. It does however have a method for MAKING a backup. I highly recommend that you do this IMMEDIATELY before using the laptop. When I did it, it required 5 (yes five) blank DVD's, so make sure that you have some on hand. If you skip this step, you will rue the day down the road. The fun part is that the printed instructions are pretty stupid and look to be generic for all Toshiba laptops. To make the backup do the following:

Click Start -> All Programs -> TOSHIBA -> Support & Recovery -> Recovery Media Creator

and follow the instructions from there. The printed instructions tell you to check the help guide on the laptop, does not give directions for finding the help guide, but when you do it does not give the correct location for the program that makes the recovery DVD's

I have had this laptop for 8 months now I use it every day for work. MS Office 2003 working fine on it. I can even use Adobe Photoshop reasonably well.

Key points:

*Extremely low temperature at about 75-80 degrees this is truly a "lap top"!

*A little slow for heavy internet graphics

*Sound card is not great, but I play all my music through airtunes to my stereo so I don't care so much

*If you want to record internet audio, you will have problems this is not the laptop for that use

*Lightweight

If you want a non-nonsense, no-frills laptop for low cost that runs MS Office and can use the internet, I don't know how you can beat this laptop.

This review is meant to help classify the type of person that would enjoy this laptop. If you are a big gamer stop here because this is not a laptop that you would enjoy. If not, please keep reading.

This is what I would call a 'Black Friday Laptop'. Why? The computer is built cheap and the parts are years old. This is the laptop you would give to a kid or better yet a grandma or grandpa who is learning the computer. Still interested? Keep reading.

This is a beginners laptop, here is why.

Product Features

AMD E Series Processor 1.65GHz (1MB Cache)

3GB SO-DIMM RAM

Note: 1.65 GHz and an AMD processor. This is the same type of processor you may find in a Netbook. Low quality. Do not expect to multitask to much. Some light browsing and email checking would be ok. 3GB of ram is low. 4 gb is what the average user even newbies use.

320GB 5400RPM Hard Drive

Note: 320gb? This is very low storage, I would not classify this as a entertainment laptop. 5400rpm also does not help, but for the price is makes sense.

15.6-Inch Screen, AMD Radeon HD 6320

Note: Nice size screen, but do not be fooled by the 'HD' the resolution would not be what you would see on a standard HDTV.

Windows Home Premium, 5.56 hours Battery Life

Note: OS is standard. 5.56 battery life? More like 2.5 to 3.5 hours unless you are just letting it sit there.

Ports and Connectivity

USB Ports: 2

USB 2.0 Ports: 2

Note: this is standard on most laptops, missing new technology of USB 3.0.

Cases and Expandability

Size (LWH): 9.84 inches, 15 inches, 1.5 inches

Weight: 5.5 pounds

Note: This is normal for a 15.6in laptop.

Wireless Type: 802.11bgn

Note: This is standard.

Other:

The plastic frame could make a normal laptop user think this may have been cheaply made.

The buttons on these type of laptops tend to break fairly easy with use. Be ready to have a backup.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a beginners laptop I will say look no further, but you might as well wait for a 'Black Friday' sale which would make this laptop about 50.00 cheaper. If this is the max you are willing to spend then save the money for a higher end laptop when models like this are on sale. If you need one now for school, work, etc. Go for it.

I have 2 hp computers, one that is 2 years old. They are faster than this one. I wasn't expecting a super computer for the price. But as it is right now it doesn't really even play a simple app on facebook without slowing up. I hope its just a simple adjustment but I guess I should have researched before purchasing this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006TI42J2/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title

Dell Latitude E5530 15.6' LED Notebook - Intel Core i5 i5-3210M 2.50 GHz -I purchased this for my 12 yo as I have one in my business. The computer is very durable and is very good. (computer ranks 4.5 stars) The bad news is that the amazon vendor is sending out computers with only 4 GB memory which should sell for about $100 less. I caught them, but only after I had loaded up MS Office. Not wanting to deal with the hassles of return and removal/license issues with the software, I accepted their apology and a $70 refund. Be sure to check your unit for the specifications you THINK you are getting before investing time in set-up. Vendor ranks (1 Star) Amazon therefore gets 3

Inspiron 3520 15 Inch Notebook/laptop Computer Windows 8 64-bit Color Black

Inspiron 3520 15 Inch Notebook/laptop Computer Windows 8 64-bit Color BlackOut of the box, seems a bit cheaper than the other 3 Dell products I have bought in the past ( 2 laptops and a desk top). Problems never resolved after 2 months with Dell. 1) Wireless connection in my home inconsistent at best, drop-out of connection ever 5-10min (not the case with any other device in my home). Keypad, almost on usable, would jump to other locations at any given time, again never had this problem with any other computer. Sorry to say,but Dell seems to be cutting back a quality. Buy Be Ware ! $$$

Long term customer of Dell mostly use them as part of a church based debt advice service. Bought this in November 2012, great until a Restart or worse, a Windows Update all Internet is lost. Many many MANY hours spent with Dell the emails with them, then found it sort of worked at the church network so shifted to TalkTalk our ISP. After 2 evenings with them they have kindly sent a new router then last night it wouldn't connect at church!

I have (for the 15th time) restored it back to Factory settings (where it all wotks) and switched off Windows Updates (again!) and will de-install McAfee (again!) if it doesn't work this time its going back.

Wow, I'm very disappointed to say the least. Not only is this laptop cheaply made, but I have had nothing but problems it ever since I got it (and I assure you, I'm not computer illiterate). I bought the laptop in January of 2013, and it became pretty much unusable by March 2013. I had it for only three months when it broke down on me, and I only used it to go online (I don't download anything, I really just come here on Amazon.com, Facebook, and the occasional browse). I have a security system on it as well and ran full scans on it every few days.

Well, it has been giving me a completely black screen immediately upon initial login, making the laptop completely unusable.

What is most frustrating about this is that DELL Support is absolutely useless. I have called multiple times, waited on hold for hours just to speak with somebody that can hardly speak english to gives me a useless canned response. Not to mention they also give me different responses every time I call, and they've tried to sell me one ($150-$270) "miracle fix" after another, after of course insisting that the issue isn't their problem. Oh, not to mention these "fixes" are inconsistentit's always something else I should purchase to fix the laptop that I've only had for about 3 months.

Yes, it seems like a good deal, but at this point, to salvage it, it's looking like I would have to spend more money on these "fixes" than I spent on the laptop in the first place.

If you buy this laptop and it doesn't work, you're pretty much SOL unless you can return it to the website/store you bought it from. Unless of course you want to pay for a fixbut then you might as well get a better quality laptop.

Not worth the time, not worth the frustration, and CERTAINLY NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!

Plus, Windows 8 is absolutely horrid. Not user friendly, just a pain in the butt really (but that is just my opinion).

I am a computer professional. I use a top of the line iMac at work and I've got a couple of computers I use for DAW and Video Editing/Graphics work.

But, really, for a laptop that I use to check email, surf the 'net, edit a spreadsheet or write a document, this laptop is a very nice value. (I am using it right now and I'm pretty sure you can't tell this review was not written on my iMac).

-It is 64-bit

-It is running Windows 8 Home (I know, but it's really not to different from Windows 7 in a lot of ways, except in the area of Printer Drivers. The Windows 7 drivers do seem to like to play well with Windows 8.)

=It has a Dual-core Processor

-It has 4 Gig of Memory

-It has a 320 Gig Hard drive.

-It has a HDMI out

-It has Bluetooth

-It has 10/100 Wired and 802.11b/g/n Wireless

-It has a CD/DVD Burner

That's a lot for under $300.

The only real downside, and all laptops in this price range will have the same issue, is of screen resolution. Yes, it a 15" screen, but the resolution is pretty minimal. I mean, it's OK, but I don't get very many rows on my spreadsheet to display when I editing one.

Lenovo T510 I5-540M 2.53G 3 GB 320 GB 15.6IN BT XPP/W7PI bought a Thinkpad T510 1 month ago. Just liking my previous T61, the T510 has super performance when running all the softwares I have including some heavy ones such as photoshop, CS and some other computer games. I enjoy the wide screen with very clear and high resolution, of course windows 7 is quite cool in running in T510.

Overally, T510 CTO is a cool laptop having all the good qualities originating from IBM.

Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Sky Silver)

Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 14.0-Inch UltrabookThis computer is not the fastest out there, nor does it have the most advanced features. But it's great if you need a very portable laptop and you don't have the budget to buy a macbook air. Though you can buy cheaper laptops, at similar specs, this laptop falls into the 'ultrabook' category as defined by Intel. The benefits to an ultrabook is the thin size, light weight, and long battery life. This is not even the best ultrabook out there, but it is one of the cheapest of those. The majority of the ultrabooks seem to be 900 and up, making this sort of a 'budget' ultrabook, if not a budget laptop.

I ordered this for my dad, who needed a new laptop for his work. Some notable points about it.

Design:

The laptop looks sleek, with a great finish that doesn't seem to make fingerprints too noticeable. The keyboard is a chiclet style -similar to the macbook air that this category of laptops attempts to follow Which means it is more shallow than the usual keyboard. I do find it easy to type with, though it does take a bit of getting used to. It looks very nice, in a subdued sort of way. I wish the screen was a higher definition, but oh well.

Portability:

One of the main reasons my dad chose this laptop. It is not as thin as some of the better ultrabooks, but it's thinner than the standard laptops, and -muchlighter.

Usability:

As the other reviewer said, the boot time is slower than I expected from an SSD/HDD hybrid. Yet, it certainly boots faster than the 5 year old laptop it is replacing! Once on, it runs smoothly and quickly for office tasks, and streaming videos. The fans seem quiet, though I haven't tried to task them with anything pushing the computer's limits. It's not a computer for gaming, and I'm not even attempting it. It seems fine for daily use / buisness/ school etc. The Battery lasts about 5 to 6 hours of streaming video and web surfing, etc.

I don't use trackpads if I can avoid it, usually with a wireless mouse, so I can't really say whether that is bad or good. My dad says he preferred the old trackpad he used, but that this one is good enough.

Overall:

I would recommend this laptop to someone who wants all the portability advantages of an ultrabook, but doesn't necessarily need something with super high performance. It's really a pretty decent little laptop. Comparatively, you might also like the Zenbook prime UX32a from ASUS, which is a similarly priced ultrabook that also has an HDD/SSD hybrid.

This is a good Ultrabook, but not excellent. HD makes noise sometimes (including some "clicks", which makes me wonder about its health; that I'll figure out just with time), more than the standard for most laptops. Touchpad sometimes fails on recognizing taps on some areas (it can be adjusted on its settings to make it work smoother, yet this is not among the best touchpads you'll find around). Battery life is fair good (does not last as long as the brand says), not excellent but not bad. Backlighting is a great feature that many Ultrabooks miss, makes it a plus for this one. It's not the lightest Ultrabook, but is light enough, easy to carry. It doesn't heat up much, what is very good. Its case is awesome. For about 650 dollars, it's a good deal.

Update (Jan 23rd 2013): The hard disk stopped making noise, whatever's the reason. It's been working good so far. SSD drive really makes a difference, this Ultrabook boots very quickly. Touchpad (even after updating its driver) still has issues, it freaks out sometimes, requiring me to restart the machine.

Someone has written in a review that this ultrabook actually doesn't have backlight as announced by Amazon. I confirm what's announced on the page here, it DOES have backlight, and it works very well (it's a smart backlight, after sometime without using the keyboard, the light turns off automatically).

Buy Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Sky Silver) Now

I research as well prior to purchasing good Laptop/netbook and found the Toshiba was the right price /ratings. After using it for a month now it is a great product light weight screen jumps out at you easy to use and the 32 GB boot up is fast. One thing I found out when I upgraded to Windows 8 is the PC locked up we had to reset the PC I guess like most laptops with the battery inside there is a small hole under the back you have to hold in to rest. It wasn't the PC but Window 8 ...when you shut down Windows 8 you have to hold down the Shift Key as you shut down the reason is an app is running in background. This I hope an update will fix. JJJ Tech Pioneer(the supplier) was very helpful and would buy from them again thru Amazon...

i was kind of skeptical about this laptop because the price was pretty low for an ultrabook with features such as the toshiba u845-s406. i must say i was pretty surprised by its performance so far. it's very sleek and fast pretty light, and has good speakers. the only downside so far is it gets a little warm, and make some sound but still nothing to serious. although allot of people scared me with the non responding keyboard i found no problems with the keyboard but on the other hand the touchpad buttons can get frustrating. other than that the backlit keyboard is awesome-best feature if u ask me.

Want Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Sky Silver) Discount?

When buying this I sought a light laptop still running Windows 7 that would compare with an Asus UL30 I bought a couple of years ago. I bought the Toshiba because it appeared a good value and of comparable quality. I disregarded several luke-warm reviews in computer magazine websites. That was a mistake.

I will say the Toshiba is attractive, has a bright and sharp screen, and boots and closes down quickly.

The keyboard does not have a positive feel for a touch typist, and I was annoyed to find that in order to get a function key to operate in the expected way--say F8, I had to hold down the key and then hit F8. This (mis)behavior can be corrected in the BIOS, but should not be the default. Also the proper names of the keys F1, F2 ... are dimmed out and hard to see. I use function keys a lot, and resent this stupid system.

The trackpad works well enough, but the mouse keys are integral with it, and this makes them much less easy to use and one is never certain they have "taken".

Most laptops have a removable battery. Not this one. If the battery fails, you will have to return to machine to Toshiba. The power supply brick lacks a pilot light.

Most laptops have a hatch on the bottom giving access to the RAM storage area, so you can add memory when necessary. Not this one. You must remove the whole bottom, at the minimum, finding screws hidden under feet and labels.

It's not unique to Toshiba, but this machine comes loaded with crapware. The hard drive has only a C: partition, not an optimal setup for a drive of this size.

But yes, it works, but if I kept it, I would be chronically annoyed at myself for buying this. Instead, I am buying an Asus U36SG-DS51, which I believe more suited to my needs.

Dell Latitude D610 Laptop + Windows XP (Microsoft Authorized Refurb; New COA and disc included!)

Dell Latitude D610 Laptop + Windows XPThe computer was OK but had only one USB port which was loose and needed to be tightened before it worked. Only one USB port is not a misrepresentation -but I would think I could assume that one could expect more than one port on a computer like this!

Not pleased--after one week of use the laptop's hard drive failed completely and I had to purchase a new hard drive. With the additional costs that went into this unit I could have bought a decent new laptop.

Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5994 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - 2 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life

Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5994 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - 2 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery LifeI bought this just before Christmas for almost $200 less than it is going for right now ($), and for that price it is awesome. For $800 it is excellent, but maybe a little pricey. It's fast, Windows 7 is excellent, has a large HDD, plenty of RAM, dual core Processor, and a very nice screen. The person I gave it to as a gift LOVES the shiny shell, and the keyboard, but I don't like either of those features. I do love that it is a Toshiba since I am writing this review on a 4 year old Toshiba Satellite, and it is still running flawlessly after 4 hard years of (ab)use.

The only actual flaw this laptop has is that the speakers are HORRENDOUS! I mean absolutely horrible! Pointless even. I had to buy a separate set to plug into the headphone jack in order to hear anything. And I thought the speakers on my old Toshiba were bad!

I have even contacted Toshiba about the uselessness of these speakers; but they have yet to respond.

It does everything it needs to do for the price. It's powerful enough to run programs like Photoshop/Flash efficiently and do just about anything even the above-averaged user would need. It's not a great gaming laptop, but it will run games fine, just not the latest and greatest with high framerates.

It looks beautiful and the number pad next to the qwerty keyboard is absolutely awesome. The touchpad is flush with the surface of the laptop's casing, but it's actually better that way once you get used to it.

All in all, for the price, it's a damn good and pretty looking computer.

Acer Aspire One Atom N570 1GB 250GB 10.1'' Win7 Starter

Acer Aspire One Atom N570 1GB 250GB 10.1'' Win7 StarterBudget netbooks are becoming harder and harder to find, and I have not jumped on the tablet bandwagon yet. The are some things I just prefer on a real computer. The small laptops today are to built to mid-to-high spec ultrabook status. That is all well and good. I am all for better performance, but sometimes all you need is a web browser and word processor.

This laptop is the perfect budget netbook. Dual-core processor along with a decent 1GB of RAM and 250GB of storage. It is very lightweight for portability, and I have gotten 8 hrs of battery life on the low settings.

I had only one area of concern. I cannot tell if it is a Atom processor incompatibility or a Win7 problem, but I did have problems getting some old (late 90s era) games to run on it. I had previously gotten them to run on a Vista machine, but so far no luck.

Otherwise, this laptop had met all my expectations, and makes a great XBMC media center host at home when its not on travel with me.

I am sending this piece in for the third time for the same issue. HP support is the worst support I have ever dealt with. The computer randomly reboots. HP doesn't even try to reproduce the problem. Steps to reproduce: 1) turn computer on. 2) Wait. If you can follow those steps, you are already more capable than their techs.

Sent it in the first time and they wiped the hdd and sent it back. They did not take any time to even try to reproduce the error. In fact, looking at the event log, it unexpectedly rebooted twice while HP had it, after the hdd was re-imaged. Makes me think they had reproduced it, but didn't care.

Sent it in the second time. Looking at the event log after I received it back, they only had it running for 2.5 days. (This time I did not it was powered on, then osee that it had unexpectedly rebooted on them) On Feb 25,n Feb 26th the date was changed to Feb 28, then on Mar 1 it was powered down. I assume the date change is due to having the CMOS battery out of the computer for 2 days? Why would they need to do this to reproduce a reboot issue? I explicitly asked that they not send it back until it was reproduced and fixed. It seems like they have a list of things they check, anen,d if those items are not brok they assume the computer works. I also asked that they call me so I can help them through reproducing it. No call.

After receiving it back, I turned it on, opened up a browser, then let it sit. It rebooted on its own just over a day later.

Run away from HP. Just run away.

Samsung Series 3 NP355V5C-S01US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver)

Samsung Series 3 NP355V5C-S01US 15.6-Inch LaptopFastest laptop you will find for this price point. There is a plethora of AMD/Intel comparisons out there on sites like anadtech and tomshardware but all you need to know is any AMD chip beats out their price range competitor (in so few words). (In a few more words AMD has a better GPU while Intel has a fast single core speed... blah, blah, blah. Yeah, of course if you buy a $2k Intel machine it will be faster than this $750. But you're on this page because you wanted to see what the best mobile AMD systems can do. This thing, first thing I did was download steam and buy Skyrim and Dishonored. Opening them brings you straight into high settings across the board. Done deal. Windows 8 is cool, you have a mobile-esque start menu and a charms menu on the right or you simply use the desktop like you do with Windows 7. Boots up before you can sip your coffee (I admit I almost miss having those load screen coffee breaks).

My personal recommendation, is to go ahead and buy a couple of 4GB sticks of RAM and swap out the 2 sticks that are in there. You need a certain type for this laptop: [8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model]. This is about a $40.00 upgrade. Aside from that you can also upgrade from the HDD to a SSD. But these are things you don't even need to do because this machine doesn't even need the extra speed those upgrades will certainly provide. But who knows, maybe you like the thought of being able to upgrade like me. What to look out for: the new mobile processor release for next year sometime if it still ends up coming out for the same socket.

A gaming machine? Check. A workstation? Check.

WARNING: PURCHASING THIS SAMSUNG LAPTOP does not get you a copy of Windows 8. I am trying to install a new hard drive in the computer, but the Windows 8 copy on the machine is REGISTERED TO SAMSUNG.

I've had several weeks to use this laptop, so here are my considered opinions. I purchased this laptop because it was pretty much the only laptop with dual graphics without two discrete cards that was anywhere near my budget. My goal was to have a laptop that could acceptably run some recent games but still be a portable machine for everyday work. I wanted to casually game without having to have a huge, heavy, expensive, hot, and noisy laptop. Plus, I'm a huge AMD homer.

This laptop succeeds brilliantly given that criteria. It has hours of unplugged battery life doing anything but gaming. The discrete card doesn't turn on until I run a game. It runs DX11 games at playable frame-rates at medium settings (only after installing the proper AMD video drivers though, which the automatic software updates don't seem to do for some reason). I wonder how many reviewers are reviewing AMD laptops without proper driver setup or without altering the settings for max performance as opposed to max battery life. I notice no substantial performance difference between the A10 and i5 devices I have used. Oddly enough, web browsing and multitasking seem subjectively a bit faster on the A10, though benchmarking programs say that I should experience noticeably less performance out of the A10. I just wonder if the APU architecture operates differently enough from previous processors that the benchmark software isn't reflecting reality. I also think the idea that you MUST have a touchscreen for windows 8 is false. In my experience so far, windows 8 is designed to ALLOW a touch-only device (a phone or tablet) to run windows, not to REQUIRE that every device have a touchscreen.

This laptop is quiet, even with the fan on, and it does not get uncomfortably hot on my lap (like my wife's macbook pro does). It's quite easily portable, and has plenty of external device connections so that there's nothing I need my desktop for. (My old desktop is now a mediaPC).

minor complaints:

The touchpad is not as good as Apple's touchpad (but then again, nobody's is). It was way too sensitive with the tapping and edge swipes, so it would switch apps on me while I was moving the cursor around or would take my cursor somewhere else while I was typing due to accidental contact. The two-finger scrolling was also frustratingly inconsistent. I disabled edge-swipes (which I don't need) and tapping (which I dind;t want) and that totally fixed the first two issues. The third issue seems to have worked its way out over a couple weeks. I think the pad just needs some seasoning or something, but I don't have any of the issues with two-finger scrolling right now that I had right out of the box.

The keyboard is not backlit. This is not something I would have expected that I would miss, but sometimes I kinda do. The screen does generally provide enough illumination to find a specialized key though. However, if the Fn symbols were written in yellow rather than blue, the contrast in low-light situations would be better against the black keys (I think).

My wife's laptop has a gloss screen, which picks up a lot of glare, so I was excited to get a matte screen like this one, and the screen looks good, but has less viewing angle than a gloss screen, but no glare. I dislike the diminished viewing angle, but can't make up my mind whether I dislike it more than the glare from a gloss screen. I guess you can't have everything.

Like any plastic exterior, this one smudges easily, so I have taken to carrying a microfiber cloth in my laptop bag for smudges on the casing.

It would be nice if it came with matched memory sticks instead of a 2GB and a 4GB. As cheap as memory is these days, it seems like shipping with 6GB instead of 8GB is a bit nickel-and-dimey. I'll likely end up upgrading to a faster set of memory sticks.

I give 4 stars instead of five because of these minor complaints, but given another chance I would not order a different laptop. I think for less than $900 you're getting at best a 4 star laptop. I regard a five star rating as near perfection. This is a really good machine, but it's not perfect. In my opinion, it is a great value. Given what I wanted it for, I am not overwhelmed by choices from most laptop manufacturers and am very pleased that Samsung makes this laptop at this price-point.

Got this unit at Best Buy in Canada for $499 yesterday and it came with 8GB of ram not 6GB. Best Value by a country mile in an under $500 laptop I could find. Going to try the free AMD RamDrive to see if it works in improving video buffering on web browsing.

Want Samsung Series 3 NP355V5C-S01US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver) Discount?

For a general-purpose laptop, this series is probably as good as you'll get for the money. It's fast, quiet, doesn't get too hot, and seems fairly sturdy. It's perfectly serviceable for gaming, although some newer games (e.g. Bioshock Infinite) need to run at lower settings to get smooth performance. The screen is nice and sharp, although it has a fairly narrow viewing angle, the keyboard is responsive and has a nice feel to it, and the number pad is a nice addition. Sound is ok for laptop speakers, but still a bit tinny.

Main complaint is the bundled Samsung software, which is buggy, crash-prone, can make the computer somewhat unstable if you're doing something computationally intensive like video processing, and has the habit of randomly waking the computer out of sleep mode and not letting it go back at odd hours if it's not turned off completely. It's also pretty deeply integrated, making it an incredible pain in the neck to remove.

If you don't mind a few hours of googling and fiddling to strip out the bloatware -or can just put up with it -it's an excellent machine for the price.

Dell Inspiron 15 i15-N5040 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Dell Inspiron 15 i15-N5040 15.6-Inch LaptopMy Dell Inspiron 15 N5040 included 3gb of RAM and i3-2.53ghz cpu. I do intend to upgrade the RAM to 8GB but will be adding that separately. Dell's pricing on memory upgrades is absurd. so I just ordered 2x4GB (8GB) of Crucial memory on Amazon for $40. Installing them just involves lifting the keyboard out.

For what most people do with their computers in the average day, this laptop is perfect. A lot of people think they need the fastest, newest, most expensive computer out there and nowadays, that doesn't have to be the case. Most of us aren't graphic designers or movie editors, so why spend hundreds more? For web browsing, email, skype calling, watching netflix, photo editing, and even movie editing (better with 8GB memory), I have had no issues at all.

It's a bit plain looking aesthetically, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Compared to the DELL XPS 15z, which I also own, it's only slightly thicker, which I found surprising since Dell has been touting how thin the XPS 15z is. It does have an off center mousepad which I found annoying since I'm used to them being centered. I found myself inadvertently hitting the right button when reaching for the left button. That is just a minor issue though. Another down side is the battery life. The standard battery doesn't last too long so keep the charger handy and stay near power outlets. I've been getting about 3 hours of battery life while web browsing.

I would recommend this to product to anyone looking for an affordable everyday laptop.

This Is A Good Computer, And Overall A Good Bargain.

But see their are things you have to adjust to.

Here are the Pros:

Big 15.6 Inch Screen.

I don't know if it is safe to say this laptop's keys sort of resemble and feel like a mac's keyboard.

anyways...

The keys are a plus.

Nice screen colors due to the default intel hd graphics.

it is a lightweight machine sort of feels like it to me.

for $400-$470 it is a hell of a bargain,it does its job.

Cons: I haven't seen any at all.

Highly Recommend.

Enjoy. Dell For The Win.

I've been a Dell fan for quite some time, and as expected, this little gem confirms why. Repeatable performance and Dell dependability in a sleek, easy to manage package. The price point for comparable units makes this purchase a true bargain, coupled with Amazon ease of ordering and confidence in the Amazon market place partners makes it that much more enjoyable. The seller, J-Tech Digital, was spot on perfect, caught a shipping error on my part and notified me by email soon after the order was placed. The J-Tech Digital Customer Service Team corrected my oversight, shipped it ULTRA FAST and took the time to follow up after the sale. Other retailers could learn a thing or two here. This is a good basic laptop. It has a lot of potential if you upgrade the ram memory.

PROS:

+ Got it brand new for under 500 US$.

+ Intel core i3 is a really good microprocesor.

+ DDR3 memory support up to 8GB of ram.

+ Works well in high temperatures and it does not overheat like HP laptop's.

CONS:

Touchpad sucks.

Only comes with 3GB of ram out of the box.

Neutral:

~ The keyboard is very basic.

~ Screen is ok (it's advertised as a LED screen but i can't see the difference between this and a normal 2008 LCD screen).

I'm happy with this product, but i'll definitely buy a memory upgrade to enhance the performance..

I have no complaints, although making the recovery discs didnt go well. Went thru 4 dvd's and then got a "failure" on the 4th disc. Called Dell support and the tech said this is a known problem and he said to use a 8GB flash drive. Sorry all mine are 4 or 6GB and i'm not going to go and spend money on a 8GB fd just to make up a backup Recovery.

Battery life could be better, only get about 4 hours out of it on the basic mode...

Over all this laptop is worth the money, it is fast and so far works great.

Dell Precision M6400 Mobile Workstation Laptop 17 in LCD NVidia Graphics

Dell Precision M6400 Mobile Workstation Laptop 17 in LCD NVidia GraphicsI have had my M6400 Covet for almost 2 years now. It is a great desktop replacement, but portability is not a strong suite. I've carried it on trips but it is just too heavy--best as stationary.

Performance wise, no compliants, runs anything. It has the QX9300 Quad Core and I have it at 8 GB out of 16 GB max; it is fast, but upgrading to 16 GB is cost prohibitive for me now. Running Windows Vista 64 Bit. Have 2 hard drives installed. The laptop screen is beautiful to behold, but I use it docked with a 24 inch external display at 1920 x 1200, a IBM keyboard and three mice--it is a desktop replacement for me.

The newer M6500 has greater capability with i7 processor, 2 GB of video ram and 32 GB of system ram capacity. You can never keep up. But this suits my needs for a while.

I don't do gaming so don't know how it is, but should be awesome.

My version of the Precision M6400 came with the full 12Gb of RAM and the Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 3.07 GHz processor, somewhat upgunned from the boilerplate listing. It also came with a Seagate 500Gb 7,200rpm HDD. I happened to have its twin, so I installed the pair in a RAID0 configuration. I have an Intel Quad Core Q9100 processor which I will be installing in place of the T9900. Even though the computer is 4 years old, with its video card, I have a unit which will do everything I want to do in Photoshop and DxO for years to come; and I can always upgrade the video card too.

The Dell is a thing of beauty, at least to my eyes fine industrial design executed to perfection in excellent materials, no corners cut, no unnecessary flourishes. Every time I pick it up and put it across my knees yes, I don't have a desk to put it on I'm a happy camper. The keyboard is wonderful to type on, the screen is crystal clear and the colour depth stunning, the touchpad and the buttons, and the pointing stick are finely tuned and responsive. Almost every aspect of the computer can be adjusted in the BIOS or in on-screen menus. People comment about the system's weight, but that is a necessary price that has to be paid for the build, including in my case two hard drives, and absolute rigidity and protection of the internal components.

This is the best computer I have ever owned, and I have lost count. I started with an XT clone in 1986.

I bought this computer in a Black Friday sale from a physical retailer. The specs aren't the greatest, but for the price its intended use as a basic every day laptop it's been perfect. Windows 8 (which comes preinstalled) is really great once you get accustomed to all the changes from previous versions. The only real complaint I've had is all the preinstalled unnecessary software HP includes, but it's nothing new and is easy enough to remove.

Definitely a good buy.

Dell I17R-2368SLV 17.3' laptop CoreTM i5-3210M processor/ 8GB Memory/ 1TB Hard Drive/ DVD±RW/CD-RW drive / SilverIt is very difficult to find a 17" laptop that uses windows 7. We tried to adjust to a windows 8 laptop, but we're old and have certain health issues which made operating it difficult. So we were delighted to be able to find this product online. We returned the other laptop which we had purchased locally at a store that had removed ALL windows 7 computers from its inventory a month earlier.

This is my first Dell and I constantly get the following error message "Service Tag in DSOE Does Not Match the Current System". Here's what Dell has to say about it.

"Download the Asset.com file using the below link. Boot to DOS, by press F8 at the Dell Logo, and selecting safe mode with networking. Once in DOS type the following Command. ASSET /S xxxxx (where xxxxx is the customers service tag)

ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/utility/asset.com

If this does not work, try this.

Turn on the power to the system and press the key to enter the BIOS. Move down to Service Tag and press Enter, if there is no service tag listed there, try the following steps.

Turn on the power to the system and press the key to enter the BIOS. Use the arrow keys to enter the Correct service tag. When the service tag has been entered correctly, press the key. Press the key again to save. Press the key. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Save/Exit button, then press the key.

Hope this helps."

It does not help. When I link to the FTP site it tells me "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running..." When I go to the BIOS my correct Service Tag number is already entered.

Additionally the Quotes (") key does not work properly.

first, i'm embarrassed i bought a dell. they used to make good machines. i used to recommend them for corp purchase. then the execs embraced the bonus structure so cherished by the technology sector.

-hdmi port work? nix to that (nix to working on 2 out of my 3 dell laptops did i say embarrassed?)

-the wireless .... well, something happened to it ...doesn't work any more. i'll call dell. no wait, that's torture. the broadcom wifi card (Broadcom bcm943142hm) is defective on a whole bunch of these machines (but dell will have u do a lot of things -you have nothing but time to spare, right?)

-i went to their online support, asking if they have sufficient trouble reports with Broadcom bcm943142hm to do anything about it the responder provided instructions on how to identify the wifi card (which i had identified not once, but twice, in my trouble ticket -but who reads those things?? )

-i tried running the diagnostics dell website says "oops, error, no can do"

some one else will try to upsell me. but it's ok. because, according to the powerpoint the dell execs received, it's all sunny in heaven. the only thing wrong is outsourcing. yeah, that's it. outsourcing.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6831 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6831 15.6-Inch Touchscreen LaptopI bought this product at my local electronics store. I have no major problems with this laptop, but the wireless adapter seems to fail constantly. I have connected to my wireless router 37 times in the past 3 hours. I have search Acer forums for answer, but most other customers are experiencing the same problem as me. Seems Acer has not found a solution to the wireless issues that me and other customers have already experienced. I will be returning this laptop due to constant dropped internet connections via wireless access. Other than that, I think anyone else can enjoy it,but if you don't mind hard wiring it to your router for internet access...then you'll do just fine.

I took a gamble on this laptop because it seemed that most reviews on any version of this laptop comments on broken wifi.

The reason I took the gamble was thanks to another review that stated how to fix the wifi issue, but luckily when I received my Acer Aspire it worked fantastically out of the box.

The first time you power it on it takes awhile to setup the files, but that's to be expected.

Once the initial setup is finished everything is good to go. Wifi works fantastic. I had absolutely no issues with it.

The touchscreen is awesome and I truly had no idea how much I would enjoy it.

The backlit keyboard is fantastic.

This is not a gaming computer! Don't go in thinking all your supposed game should work. Just a disclaimer.

The only two issues I've had are:

1. The battery isn't as nice as I would like. I probably get 3 hours of heavy use. I still haven't looked into an extended battery.

2. About once a week you should completely restart the laptop to free up all your volatile memory.

Overall, I completely love this laptop. I'm on it right now typing this review. It actually works so great that, even though it's 3 months old, I still haven't transferred even half of my files over because it's just so great out of the box.

The product largely does what it's expected to do: CPU is fast, integrated graphic chip is good for non-gaming applications, and touch-enabled screen goes well with Windows 8 Metro interface. Out of the box, wifi indeed is not stable (obvious compared with other devices connected to the same network: changing to "limited" connection and then coming back after some time). Installing the latest driver from Acer's support website has solved the wifi problem, but the bluetooth no longer works. Since I use wifi all the time while seldom connecting to a bluetooth device, it seems to be worthwhile trade-off for now. Hopefully Acer can introduce a patch that can make both wifi and bluetooth reliable.
