HP ENVY DV7-7200 1.5TB (Dual 750GB 7200RPM) Quad Edition HYBRID Gaming Notebook PC; DV7T with 16GB RAM Upgrade

I first reported here that I'd received a different unit than I ordered. It sure LOOKED that way, as Windows 8 showed only one .75T drive. But the drive was actually there, and installed, just not visible to the OS. It was a configuration issue that was easily solved after eventual consultation with tech support at Elutronics. The computer is lightning fast, and with an amazing 1.5T of disk storage should last for years.

While there was a SNAFU with my phone call (perhaps a problem with voicemail), as soon as Elutronics discovered that I had a problem, I received a phone call which provided me with detailed guidance on how to reconfigure, so that the second drive, which had not shown up to Windows 8, is now properly working.

Thanks to William at Elutronics for excellent followup on my problem. I'd give them 5 stars because of that! (and, of course, for a superior laptop at a great price!).

Pete A

the specs on this machine are excellent but it won't stay up. Eluktronics said that they would swap it with a new one and while i wait for their instructions I'm trying to get my files and programs off it without losing anything to spontaneous reboots! Luckily i still have the backups i used to move the data to this new machine in the first place.

So it's May 1 and Eluktronics Will responded so quickly to my e-mails and sent me a replacement computer with pre-paid return label for the first defective computer. The new one booted the first time without a problem no error messages! Yeah. It is still up and running after 2 hours and the other one had re-booted twice by now.

So I have to give Eluktronics 5 stars and this replacement is just wonderful but the frustration of a bad unit up front and being "down" and now having to get Microsoft to re-license my Office software (a royal pain) makes this less than a 5 star experience.

I really would not hesitate to recommend this computer. Defective units happen and I get that. It's a beautiful unit fast!!! and quiet.

This is my son's first major purchase. We liked the options offered on this laptop versus the others listed on Amazon. The positive feedback of customer service from a previous review of Eluktronics really sold us. The laptop arrived early and has performed flawlessly. Allows gaming & video streaming simultaneously. No issues with Windows 8 as with previous review. Once you get it set up the fingerprint reader logs you on. Navigating Windows 8 is just as easy or you can set the desktop to a more Windows 7 look if that is what you prefer. I would recommend this laptop and this seller

This pc is fast, and liking it very well except for windows 8 until today I was just absolutely dumfounded to find out that I can't use my external display for serious photo editing. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to use it and get it over in portrait mode. Finally I looked it up online and discovered that others have found it impossible without adding a usb video card. Very disapointed as I need to use it with big monitors to check my work on sports banners and posters. I cannot believe a 1,500 laptop can't do this.

If someone can tell me I am mistaken and how to do this I will be grateful and will be glad to redo my review. As it is I think this is a serious deficit in this pc. I have cheap laptops and very good laptops that do this and just thought it was a basic feature.

This computer does everything you would expect. My only problem is not with the computer or the seller, but with Microsoft. Windows 8 for a non touch screen PC or laptop is useless. Microsoft took a step backwards in this design. I would even prefer Windows Vista over this. I did however spend another $3.00 to make the experience more bearable. Download Startisback. makes using Windows 8 tolerable. Wish I would have ordered this laptop with Windows 7.

Sony VAIO S Series SVS1511GFYB i5-3210M 15.6" FHD IPS 1080P Laptop, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE with

Sony VAIO S Series SVS1511GFYB i5-3210M 15.6' FHD IPS 1080P Laptop, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE with 1GB, HDMI, 6GB/640GB/DVDRW, USB 3.0, Bluetooth, WIN7 Home 64Pros: Windows 7 was one of the main reasons I decided on this computer. I didn't want to buy Office or my other software programs again which you would have to with Windows 8. Screen resolution is really nice. Everything is crystal clear and sharp. I like the matte screen which has a wide range of adjustable brightness without the glare. Back-lit keyboard is a plus. The keyboard is nice to type on; I was afraid it would feel a little shallow after some reviews I read but the key depth is just fine. I don't use the mouse pad, I've never liked them so I can't say much about that. It is very quiet. There are two settings which determine how the fan runs, but even when its on, it is fairy quiet. Battery life seems to be pretty decent. Not much bloatware to uninstall. I've had computers that were completely loaded with useless programs but this one is not. Has an optical drive, which is rare for it being such a thin and light weight computer.

Cons: Not many really. Like I said it has an optical drive which is a slot loading one. When you boot up or come out of sleep mode and open the laptop it always runs and makes noise for a couple seconds. I disabled it but to no avail it still spins up every time! It's not a deal breaker by any means. The lid was not quite what I was expecting. I thought magnesium alloy was a metal type material however the lid certainly looks and feels like plastic. It is a rougher feeling plastic though, like I said not flimsy. I quickly got over it though, its a nice looking computer.

Overall I am very happy with it. I spent $800 which was a little more than I originally wanted to spend but I feel it was worth it. I hope to keep this laptop for a long time.

great laptop, very light and is working great. very little setup to get it ready to use. I like the backlit keyboard.

HP ProBook 4720s WH324UT 17.3" 4GB 500GB Notebook PC

HP ProBook 4720s WH324UT 17.3' 4GB 500GB Notebook PCBought our HP probook 4 months ago... it is in for its 3rd repair... customer service has been a nightmare...never again

I just bought a 4720 ProBook. The display is not nearly as good as the 6 year old Compaq laptop it was intended to replace. The colors are washed out, and increasing or decreasing the brightness doesn't help. Also, looking at the screen and moving side to side, the image is OK. But if you change the angle of the screen even slightly, i.e. slightly open or close the lid, the image becomes too dark or too light. I had expected the technology to have improved over 6 years, but in this case it has gotten worse. I wish I had read about this problem in reviews, but I didn't see anyone pointing it out.

If you don't care about image quality, the computer is probably fine. If you do, don't buy it.

This laptop was excellent from the start then it started to give problems with the OS. It's light and compact for a 17" laptop. The raised keyboard makes cleaning easier. The combo function keys means you don't have an overtly cluttered keyboard. The laptop can be used readily by a business or home user. Windows 7 may seem as the right companion OS for this laptop. Windows 7 starts up faster than Vista and performs even better at first. After a month, you get problems rebooting the laptop. I've had to system restore the laptop on numerous occasions to be able get the computer to start properly!

I've had this laptop for 2 years with no problems. Mouse takes some getting used to but it works great. Its fast, really fast for the price. I don't understand all the negative reviews.

It is a little bit big and after two years of HEAVY use it still works very well. Battery is starting to die more often which is to be expected. It should be noted that this laptop survived with no damage after being in my backpack during a motorcycle accident. 5 stars.

This laptop is almost awesome, except for one crucial problem: the touchpad. It is so bad it makes the laptop almost unusable without an external mouse.

The touchpad is a BAD knockoff of the apple touchpad from their macbookpro line. The HP/Synaptics touchpad on this model of laptop allows for multi-touch gestures, though scrolling is the only one that seems to work. Despite this multi-touch ability they did not enable two-finger touch to be a right-click. Massive drawback.

The touchpad has the feature that if you push down on the touchpad with pressure, it will physically "click". Here is the problem:

Left clicking: A light tap on the touchpad, anywhere, counts as a left click. But a heavy tap that makes the "click" in the touchpad happen, only works INSIDE of the little drawn rectangles that are the right and left "buttons". This is hugely counter-intuitive. You'll be scrolling away down a document and go to left click on something and because you pushed it a hair too hard, and it doesn't count. This becomes infuriating after the 10th time. It has to be lightly, or inside the little drawn on box. Accidentally drag another finger over the touchpad while you are clicking? NOTHING. no click. Leave a finger of the left "button" like you would on a normal touchpad with buttons? NOTHING. no click

Right Clicking: Apple made their multi-touch mouse right click when you touch it with 2 fingers. HP, when deciding to make a knock off of their mouse, left this out. Instead left clicks can ONLY happen inside of the little left button box that is drawn onto the touchpad. Light taps in the box don't work, must be a hard tap so the touchpad "clicks". A light tap, even inside of the "left button" box, is a right click.

The rest of the laptop: Decent. With a core i5 and plenty of ram, this laptop is snappy running Windows 7. The screen is gorgeous. Onboard hdmi, vga, esata, and gigabit nic are all nice features. I'd like more than 3 usb ports, but that's not a deal breaker for me. They integrated the hp quick launch buttons into the F keys, which would be annoying if I used them. I never used them, however, on my previous HP and didn't plan on it for this one, so no big deal.

The laptop isn't exactly light, but it is lighter than the previous model with the same size screen. Overall weight I would rate as good. It has a full keyboard with number pad, which is nice.

Overall: Laptop is good if you don't plan on using the built in touchpad. If you plan on using this touchpad constantly, keep looking. I've used it for 2 weeks now and still haven't gotten used to this strange touchpad. HP massively missed the mark when coping apple's multi-touch touchpad, and completely fubar'ed it.

It's a nice laptop at a good price, but Windows 8 is everything it shouldn't be. An entirely unintuitive operating system. I installed a start button, on a 7 emulator, which helps but doesn't fix it.

I would happily give the laptop itself 5 stars.

I have a 4 1/2 year old Dell laptop and I thought it was time to replace it with a newer laptop. I have had no problems whatsoever with my Dell in all that time. I fully expected and wanted to buy a new Dell with a 17 inch screen but the prices seemed a bit high. By the way I'm a "Make or buy American" guy and I have been in Austin, Texas where the Dell headquarters is/was(?). I made the minor mistake of asking one of our computer whizzes at work what he thought about Dells and he gave me that vague look and speech "Dells are OK" but then he said "I've heard a lot of good stuff about ASUS". So I looked up ASUS up on the internet and all I saw was an address in California...my search stopped there and I thought I was getting an American brokered (at least) computer. ASUS was cheaper because it's all foreign.

Epilogue:

-The DVD player skips and burps, even on brand new disks.

-Going to the Start screen interrupts or stops other functions.

-I'm not sure if the Instant On feature is giving me the good and refreshing benefits of a cold start.

-It just doesn't seem that much faster than my 4 1/2 year old Dell laptop.

I'm just kinda' surprised.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 031946U 15.6 LED Notebook Core i3 i3-380M 2.53GHz 2GB DDR3 320GB HDD DVD-Wr

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 031946U 15.6 LED Notebook Core i3 i3-380M 2.53GHz 2GB DDR3 320GB HDD DVD-Writer Intel HD Graphics Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Black TexturedI got this laptop from an IT school. Considering it was part of the tuition and it is supposed to be used FREQUENTLY in class especially for VMs (virtual machines) ie, Server 2003 and Server 2008. I am very disappointed with their (the school) choice of laptop. I eventually upgraded the 4 gb of RAM to 8GB max (cost $50). I had also went ahead and upgraded the stock 5400rpm, 320 GB SATA HD with a crucial 512GB SSD (cost $300). I transfered the whole OS/Drive onto the new SSD via a USB/SATA cable, worked like a charm. Now, instead of waiting literally 5 minutes for Windows 7 to load. The OS is up and running in 30 seconds. For me the cost of $350 was ok, even though I had already kinda' paid for it in my tuition. I use it as a 'test' laptop. I will most likely try to find ways to upgrade/change the FAN and CPU (maybe to an i7).

So, I would value this laptop at $400 max. There are others out there that can be upgraded piece by piece and still be under the asking price of $600.

hope this helps.

Acer Aspire AS5733-6426 15.6-Inch Laptop (Gray)

Acer Aspire AS5733-6426 15.6-Inch Laptopwell, i picked my Acer AS5733 up at my local wally world a little over a week ago. after cleaning up the junk apps and getting all of the updates, it's a great little machine. Also to be noted, and I'm not the only one to get this, there appears to be an unlisted update with the processor; it's an Intel i5 560M which has the turbo boost. Very nice little surprise indeed. The display is bright and vibrant with no dead pixels. Speakers are about average for a notebook; good enough for watching a movie in a quiet room. Cooling fan is dynamic and is very quiet. Only 2 USB ports and no hard drive activity light (funny how I miss something once it's gone). Unless you clean the software up first, it takes 4 DVD disks to make the factory restore disks. Haven't tried the camera yet so I cannot comment. All in all a very good buy.

Great machines So far, I have bought 4 Acer laptops and all are doing excellent. NOT one issue with any of them -so far at least!! Would definitely buy another if I have a need for one.

The laptop has a really beautiful screen, great color. The speed is also fine, and the price was good. However, after 7 months, my first problem with it is the keyboard. Perhaps it's because the number keys are on the right, so the rest are smaller, but I regularly hit the wrong keys. If I always had, no big thing, but not so. Also the touch is difficult, sometimes having to go back and press hard really slows me down. Second, the sound has problems, scratchy when changing screens, then clears up. I'm looking into plugging in another keyboard to remedy my worst problem. I can live with the rest but won't buy another Acer.

Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC VGN-P588E/Q

Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC VGN-P588E/QI've owned this exact unit for more than six months now. I purchased it strictly for road trips, as I have several custom-built desktops and a larger/luggable Lenovo notebook at home. It's a terrific travel UMPC. You need to get used to the still-usable smallish keyboard (with a Return key way too close to the up/down arrow keys) and the very tiny fonts/display (even when enlarged to 125%), but still very good. It's terrific having the SDD instead of an accident-prone spinning HDD. There's no need for a separate PC case, it fits right in my carry-on along with its very tiny power supply.

My only issue is: even upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium with all Intel and Sony video driver patches, it still can't do video of any quality or size without stuttering/hiccup'ing, which is very annoying for any netbook/notebook in this premium price range.

Samsung NP700Z5A-S03US 15.6-Inch Laptop

Samsung NP700Z5A-S03US 15.6-Inch LaptopJust received mine and finished going through setup. Not too much crapware installed. Nice option during setup to set partition sizes.

Out of the box Windows Experience Index: 5.9.

Processor: 7.5

RAM: 7.6

Graphics: 6.1

Gaming Graphics: 6.1

Hard disk: 5.9

I wish the arrow keys were a bit larger maybe 3/4 size (if not full size) instead of the 1/2 size that they are (on the other hand, I need to remember that the numeric keypad does double duty with full size navigation keys). I would have preferred to have power connection in the rear rather than the side.

Update Dec 13: The wifi antenna is giving me noticeably worse performance than my previous laptop. Working from the same chair, my 5 year old Dell D620 was getting link speeds of 36-48Mbps. This laptop is getting 5-18Mbps. Loss of 1 star.

Update Dec 14: There's no BREAK key on the keyboard! This forces you to use the mouse to enter/leave full screen remote desktop (instead of ctrl+alt+break). No ctrl+break either. The touchpad is taking some getting used to. It produces an audible click, but the force required to produce the audible is less than the force required for a mouse click to actually register with the OS need to see if that can be adjusted. The display has an ambient light sensor near the delete/home/end/page-up/page-down keys. Using those keys causes the display to dim. Disable the sensor via the easy settings apps.

Figured out the problem with the touchpad. It has a deadzone that is about 3/4" inch long by 1/2" tall. The deadzone is located on the left half of the bottom edge. The right-half works fine for right-click. Left-click is a bad experience. No clicks are ever registered in that zone even though the pad does make an audible click.

The external power supply isn't too large. But it makes a heck of a lot of noise even though it is on the floor underneath a table. I thought I was hearing clicking of disk drive head movement. Nope, the power supply makes a staticy-clicking sound whenever I alt+tab between windows. That sound is also made when using arrows keys to move up and down lists or when using the mouse to reposition scrollbars.

The bottom of the laptop is very smooth/slick. Keeps sliding around on my legs and requires that I apply downward force with my palms. I'll need to put some textured tape on the bottom.

Starting to regret this purchase...

Update Dec 15: The deadzone on the touchpad is getting smaller. But the lower right corner of the touchpad feels like it has gotten a flat tire. It is now noticeably lower than the rest of the touchpad and right-clicks are more difficult there as there is almost no travel left for clicks.

I now understand what the other reviewer wrote about jumpy cursor. The problem is due to the deadzone. When I do full left-right sweeps on the touchpad, it is very responsive except over the deadzone. Then the cursor hiccups it doesn't jump, it just stops moving, then starts moving again when my finger makes it to the other side of the deadzone.

I really want to like this machine (all the features are there and the form-factor is fantastic 1600x900 in a small 15 inches), but the wifi performance and touchpad durability/performance are killing it for me. Maybe this will also turn into a review of Samsung repair service.

Got AutoHotKey to map CapsLock to Break. Search for the "How to add a Pause/Break key to a keyboard that doesn't have one?" question at superuser com.

At every new user session, there are like 4 or 5 samsung apps (battery, easy settings, harddisk, ...) that require UAC elevation when you login if using a standard Windows account. Administrative accounts are only prompted 2 or 3 times. All of these apps are scheduled tasks that are triggered by login.

And the wifi performance still stinks.

Update Dec 17: I like the display and hardware (other than the wifi and the busted touchpad). I'll buy a new router to see if wifi performance improves. The touchpad will need repair, but I don't want to part with it quite yet. The dmhkcore.exe app that provides oem fn key functionality does not work properly with standard user accounts. It needs to be terminated and then restarted with admin privileges in order for fn+(f1, f2, f3 or f12) to work correctly (the other fn key combinations do work without admin privileges).

Update Dec 20: I got a new Netgear WNDR4000 dual-band N router (the old Linksys router did G). Wifi link speed improved but is still on average lower than my old laptop from my working position (read that as: the N performance of my new laptop is slightly lower than the G performance of my old laptop). If I move about 12 feet closer to the router, then I start to see what N is really about.

Update Dec 21: I checked out the B model that was on display at Best Buy. The touchpad is the same but that one did not have the deadzone that mine has. It does have a similar flat-tire right-click area.

Update Jan 6: check out the samsung forum over at notebookreview dot com.

Update Jan 18: This laptop does not support OpenGL running on the AMD graphics card. See the forum over at notebookreview. /samsung/630666-series-7-chronos-all-:models-push-samsung-implement-fixed-mode-bios-23.html#post8247924 and /samsung/630666-series-7-chronos-all-models-push-samsung-implement-fixed-mode-bios-23.html#post8248124

Update Feb 17: OpenGL issue is resolved with just released drivers. I removed the 4GB stick and replaced with 8GB now I have a total of 12GB. Nice.

Our biggest concern before buying this Samsung Series 7 laptop was the horror stories relating to poor Wi-Fi performance for units equipped with the Broadcom Wi-Fi card.

But a family member wanted it and asked me to set it up. I have now had a chance to use it for the last 6 weeks.

Fortunately Wi-Fi turned out to be OK (details below).

This laptop is fast, quiet and runs cool. The matte anti-glare display is very pleasing and bright.

It is a pleasure to use, the backlit keyboard is a must, no more fumbling in the dark.

It's also great that it is equipped with a full size HDMI port for connecting to a TV etc. By the way, it switches automatically to the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics board when plugging into the HDMI.

Two of the three USB ports are USB 3.0 (great for fast data transfer to external drives)

It has a very large TrackPad which obeys somewhat similar hand-gestures you may have become used to from smart phone displays. I am a mouse fan and turn the pad off because my thumbs rest on it when I type making the cursor jump all over.

This Series 7 SO3US model comes with Win 7 Pro and a factory recovery disk that allows you to do a clean install (nice touch and almost unheard of these days).

The -SO3US model may be the best value as compared to the other models -S0AUS, -S0BUS, -S04US, -S09US etc. because the S03 comes with the maximum 8GB RAM, 1GB of dedicated graphics memory and Win 7 Professional already installed (although one of the other models has 1TB HDD).

It has 8 GB of RAM and a 750 GB 7200 RPM HDD.

This Series 7 is faster than a typical PC equipped with HDD (Hard Disk Drive) because Samsung equipped the motherboard with an 8GB SSD (Solid State Drive) used for faster execution of programs and boot-up (as compared to a PC with HDD only).

The optical drive loads the DVD automatically when partly inserted into the slot (similar to a Mac). Push Fn and Delete simultaneously to eject (not mentioned in the Quick Start instructions).

I personally prefer the old fashioned mechanical tray-loader with a push button for opening. The disadvantage of the slot loader type is that it may not accept the small diameter CDs often containing drivers for accessories (I did not dare try).

But I guess it is a matter of preference because you may prefer to download drivers from the manufacturer(s) website which will ensure that you always get the latest/updated version.

WI-FI PERFORMANCE

As mentioned our biggest concern before buying was the horror stories relating to poor Wi-Fi performance of Samsung Series 7 laptops equipped with the Broadcom Wi-Fi card.

The first thing I did after opening the box was to test the Wi-Fi signal strength using inSSDer 2.1 (free software). A great tool, it will show you all the routers in your area including signal strength (and much more).

My hart almost stopped when comparing the 15" Series 7 with my own 17" Samsung RF711 S03US.

I could only see 3 routers on the 15" Series 7 whereas I could see at least 16 routers on the 17". Also the signal intensity measured in dB (decibel) was significantly stronger on the 17" (a smaller negative number indicates higher signal strength = closer to zero).

Any difference is significant as 3 dB increase represent a DOUBLING in strength.

I was ready to pack it up and send it back but decided to put it to the test using "LAN Speed Test" a highly effective program to map and troubleshoot transfer speeds in your network.

To my surprise the 15" with the Broadcom Wi-Fi board did better over "long" distances compared to the 17" with the Intel Wi-Fi board. As you will notice the 17" did better at short distances where the speed was 1.5 to 2 times higher but "relatively poorly" at longer distances.

In my opinion the 15" Samsung Series 7 with the Broadcom Wi-Fi card came out as the winner in these tests.

SSD UPGRADE

The computer was fast in the factory configuration however if you desire EXTREME SPEED or longer battery life you can replace the original HDD with a SSD.

This is exactly what we did to this laptop and boy it's fast!

To find out how it's done click on this link .... Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC512N/AM 512 GB 2.5 Inch SATA III MLC Internal SSD Laptop Kit with Norton Ghost 15 and search in the reviews for the heading: "NEED FOR SPEED! You got it... and without losing the factory F4 recovery option. HERE IS HOW!"

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS LAPTOP TO A FRIEND?

Absolutely, the factory configuration and performance is excellent. It is very thin, light and perfect for travel.

Only users that need to manipulate large graphics/video files or perhaps have been "spoiled" by SSD systems may want to consider a SSD upgrade. (This category will also want their computers connected via a wired network).

Some early versions of the Series 7 laptops that hit the market may have Wi-Fi issues (as reported in some early reviews and complaints all over the internet) however if you have problems, the first thing to do would be to verify that you have the latest drivers (I have added the Driver details and HOW TO DO THE TEST as a comment below this review).

Before this purchase, we compared a lot of different laptops and eventually ended up with this one over the Sony Series S VAIO laptop. The Sonys (in the store) were running so hot that the back was unpleasant to the touch.

A couple of important points

This 7 Series is up and running in TWO SECONDS from sleep mode and a reboot takes 22 seconds.

You only reboot once a week when you use the Fast Start feature (it will ask you once a week).

Also the backlit keyboard is fast and pleasant.

I hope this review can bring some facts to the table regarding the ongoing Intel/Broadcom Wi-Fi discussion and also help you find the right laptop.

I've used Desktop PCs for as long as I could remember and this is the first laptop I've ever purchased. However I did tons of research before I purchased this machine. So as a new laptop user, I just want to say I'm pleased I made the change to mobile computing.

The laptop has a lot pros, but it also has some cons that really stand out. The hardware itself is solid. Aluminum build with a clean brushed look on top. The keyboard is very easy to type on, but the edge of the laptop is sharp and it digs into your wrist while your typing. It's more than a minor annoyance. You'll find yourself lifting your wrist off (mainly your right wrist) to see the marks the edge leaves behind. I'm not going to lie, the edge is sharp enough to put in some pain. I suggest wearing a wrist band while typing.

Another issue that bugged me a little bit was the video graphics. If you don't optimize the graphics to play videos off the web, such as Facebook videos, the video itself will get scrambled. It will continue to play, as you'll still hear the audio, but the video will be glitched. And it just won't happen once. It will continue to happen until you go into the Catalyst Control Center and deal with the issue.

Seeing that I'm coming from a desktop PC, I really don't have much to compare the battery life to. But from using the computer for over 6 hours continuously, with WiFi on, I can say that it's sufficient enough to get you through a full day's worth of work.

The backlit keyboard is beautiful, and the display is straight up gorgeous. The "max screen" technology they added to the display really helps it stand out among other laptops. The viewing angles, however could have been a little better.

For the price of the laptop, I wish a BluRay player added instead of a DVD writer. But in the end, you'll be trading the BluRay for the newest i7 quad core processor, and a top the line graphics card. So in my opinion it evens out. Besides, who uses physical discs for anything anymore? :P

I haven't played any games on this yet so I really can't say much about the graphics itself.

Pros

Backlit keyboard

Fast start up from cold start or sleep

Sleek look

NumPad

Slot load Disc Drive instead of Tray Load

Long Battery Life

Cons

Edge of laptop digs into wrist, leaving marks

Graphics aren't set up out of the box

No BluRay Drive

Jumpy mouse

I would Recommend this item to others.

There is a common issue with the space key on this laptop in that pressing it on the edge will often not register even if you press really hard. This is incredibly irritating for a touch typist, but today I solved the problem on my laptop! So if you have the same issue see my video on the quick fix over at . Basically you just need to stick a square of paper between the space bar and its pressure sensor.

Also note that this S03US version is functionally exactly the same as the S01US version, with the only difference being that the first 4GB of RAM is permanently attached to the motherboard on the S03US. The S02US and S04US are likewise functionally identical. The Best Buy version (I don't know the product code) is completely different though. I have no idea why anyone would buy that one.

Among the positives for this laptop are its speedy CPU and GPU, readable resolution on the bright non-reflective 15" display, light weight, stylish form factor, really superb battery life, a great backlit keyboard (once the space key problem is resolved), and a good amount of RAM and hard drive storage.

Because the positives are so great I am giving this laptop 5 stars even though it has several negatives.

First, the space key issue. This is a quality control issue that should have never occurred, and I hope Samsung will send new space bar keys to all the people who bought this laptop. But until then, you can try the quick fix I referenced above.

The choice of DVD instead of blu-ray is odd and perplexing. However, I so rarely use even the DVD and to be honest I would probably never use blu-ray if it were included, so as strange as it is that the feature is missing, I don't mind.

I am not pleased with the choice of the broadcom wifi, which does not support 5ghz wifi. I have opened up this laptop, which is very easy (close the LCD, flip it over, remove the ten screws on bottom, then flip it back over, open the LCD and gently pry the case shell loose along the edges and then close the LCD and flip it over again and gently pull the bottom off), and replacing the broadcom wifi adapter with the Intel 6230 part should be very easy [SEE EDIT BELOW]. There are only 2 antenna wires, so getting the 3 antenna version would be pointless. Also, be sure to get the one with bluetooth if you try this, otherwise you will lose bluetooth since it is provided by the broadcom wifi adapter.

The webcam camera does not work well in low light. Meh. Turn on a light, I guess.

I use the touch pad as little as possible and prefer to use a mouse. It seems to work alright for me when I need it, but I sometimes disable it while typing so I can rest my palms while typing.

Overall the negatives are not a big deal for me.

Edit Dec-2012: It is indeed very easy to replace the broadcom wifi/bluetooth adapter with the Intel 6230 part. Do NOT get the newer Intel 6235 part as it WILL NOT WORK, as I discovered. Some people have also reported issues with getting the 6230 to work, but the trick is to uninstall all Broadcom software related to the wifi/bluetooth BEFORE installing the 6230. This very importantly includes the WIDCOMM Bluetooth SOftware software. You should also download the Intel drivers for the 6230, and install them after you have removed the Broadcom software. Then open up the laptop and swap the parts and reboot. Your mileage may vary, but it worked for me.

I can tell you right now, this computer is poorly designed and poorly serviced. My laptop has already been back to Samsung THREE TIMES!! The space bar has never worked right! I type with my hands in an upright position and usually only tap the outside edges of the space bar. If you do not hit the space bar within 1 inch of exact center, IT DOESN'T WORK!

The first time I sent my Laptop back it was due to HD failure.

The second time was because the DVD drive was grinding and failing

This time my Video card went out..

SAMSUNG'S RESPONSE: Samsung would like to provide you with an exchange offer of Model: NP700Z5C-S02US.

Based on the features and specifications of your original unit Samsung feels that this is the most comparable unit based on our inventory.

THIS IS A DOWNGRADE!!!

I offered to pay the difference to let me upgrade to a newer version. Their answer was: NO how about a refund??

The worst part is.. I wanted to love this computer, it was my first laptop purchase in years.

Lenovo G550 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 3.8 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Lenovo G550 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 3.8 Hours of Battery LifeI ordered this on the advice of one of the Amazon reps since it had everything I was looking for (and I was very specific on what I wanted.) It runs great. The only issue I had trouble with was the face recognition for login; the light always seemed too low for it to work properly and it would just churn forever. I disabled that (uninstalled it) and it's been running fine ever since. Plenty of speed and power for what I use it for -Internet browsing, light games, word processing, spreadsheets. Movies play great, display is great.

This is the first laptop i'm buying..CD Drive worked only one day..Now it s not working..Dont know how other laptops in lenovo...Totally i'm not saisfied with the product..

Eee PC 900 Ubuntu mini laptop

Eee PC 900 Ubuntu mini laptopThis is a great computer to take to a hotel.... It is not meant for solid home use; the keyboard is too small, and the memory isn't great.

You can actually use the keyboard, but I do find myself pecking with one finger a lot, which is why I didn't give it a five star. The speed is pretty fair, and the wireless connection is awesome. I can get a signal in a room that I could not get on my wireless laptop, which makes it a nice little computer to use in my bedroom if my husband is on our main computer. I previously had no way of connecting to the internet in that room, but thanks to this computer and our wireless system, I can.

It was easy to set up (almost no set up required), easy to figure out, for this novice, and easy to connect to the internet. The Linux, which the salesman warned me about, and my teenager told me I would hate, was not an issue at all. It doesn't take any prevous knowledge of how to use linux. It was easy to connect to the internet at the hotel and at home.

It serves my purpose perfectly (throw in a back pack to take on vacation to connect to the internet). I haven't really done anything with documents. It doesn't have a lot of memory or a place to put a dvd..., but you can use a card... for memory and add an external disk drive. I wouldn't want to type a whole lot on it. It is best for net surfing, checking e-mail..., but like I said, you can use the keyboard. It just takes a little more effort than a full size.

I bought a little mouse to go with it, and it is handy dandy! I also like the little neoprene or whatever it is called cover (quite awesome). It is great protection for it. I put the mouse and cord in a little make up bag and throw in my back pack with it.

This little computer is perfect for portable and convenient use. It starts up in about 30 seconds, which is faster than most computers. The operating system, Linux, is surprisingly easy to use, and I have never used a Linux operating system before. The computer comes loaded with a word program, spreadsheet program, and presentation program, all of which are similar to Microsoft's office programs. The battery power is awesome, and lasts for hours on end, even after 8 months of daily use! The screen may be a bit small, but the color and clarity is excellent. Web browsing and E-Mail is very fast and user friendly, and pages are very easy to see and read. It also comes with games, calculator, music player, photo viewer, and a video player. All applications work seamlessly, and the machine has plenty of power and speed for multi-tasking. I would highly recommend this computer for anyone looking for a small, compact, portable, and powerful machine.

This computer wouldn't let me upgrade Firefox and broke after about a month and a half of using it. It also often crashed whenever a webpage was fully loaded.

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5229 15.6' LaptopI am happy with this item. It is very useful and practical. Good quality. I recommend it. Great job. Thank you.

The speakers on this computer are AWFUL! I have sent it in 4 times to be fixed and everytime it comes back the same. Sounds ok if you use earplugs. Customer service is lousy. How anyone cannot hear the poor sound quality is beyond me. Don't know if i just got a lemon or that's just the quality (or lack thereof) of Toshiba laptops. Either way, I will never buy anything from this company again. Should have stayed with HP or Dell.

Well I just bought this product from BestBuy, which is a lot of cheaper than here by around 170 dollars. And all I can say about this is that, this laptop's amazing. It runs really fast and it's battery life is long. I highly recommend this laptop, only if this is with Windows 7 it would've been better.

I purchased this and spent nearly 4 hours with a friend (who is a computer geek) attempting to set up email and adjust the date/time which were incorrect. After numerous attempts to set up an email account other than microsoft; gave up and put the laptop back in the box to be returned. We were not able to add an email account other than windows live and were not successful adjusting the date/time due to the inabiilty to create the administrator account. The laptop seemed to do well and the battery lasted the entire time we spent trying to figure out windows 8. I would stay away from this unless you work for microsoft or have a microsoft technician or programmer friend who does! We thought about trying to delete the OS and replace with another OS; figured that would probably take the remainder of the day! I also considered a call to asus support and figured I would reach someone in another country that I could not understand. Easier to put back in the box and go for a refund!

HP G7-2022us Laptop Computer 17.3" LED-Backlit Display & Intel® CoreTM i5-2450M Processor W/Turbo

HP G7-2022us Laptop Computer 17.3' LED-Backlit Display & IntelĀ® CoreTM i5-2450M Processor W/Turbo Boost TechnologyI don't know what some of these reviewers are talking about. On my laptop the fan is very quiet and the laptop stays relatively cool compared to my old laptop which would burn my lap when I used it. Very good build quality, with the exception of the disc drive, which does indeed feel a little cheap and easy to break as mentioned in previous reviews. Otherwise, this laptop is great and has more than decent power as long as you don't expect to play the latest games, in which case you would really need to get a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

Purchased this laptop today. Love the keyboard. Fast machine. But, the fan is loud and it never stops! This is NOT a quiet laptop. Very nerve-wrecking.

I bought this computer today and shortly after working with, it started sound like hitting cymbal toward right side the computer. It was an annoying sound after typing for 5 minutes. After spending so much money I ended up with a piece of art. I came to find out that inside of the optical CD drive there are few pieces of thin aluminum sheets that seems to loose. Also the up and down buttons are so small that only kids can press them. I've had a couple of DELL computers for several years and they have been great.

So I'm not sure if I should go back to the store and return this piece of art or live with it. HP really needs to improve their products!!!

I just purchased this computer this weekend and I must say that it is a high quality unit. All of the hardware is first rate; I didn't give it 5 stars as the hard drive speed is only 5400 RPMs and the DVD tray seems a little flimsy. As far as noise I didn't hear any, at least none that was noticeable. Overall this was a great purchase.
