Alienware M17X 17.3" Black Laptop
Pros: Cool looking exterior. Top of the line video card.Cons: Overpriced. Easily overheats. Sub par components. Poorly engineered on the inside.
I have owned four Alienware computers, including three laptops and one desktop computer. I was severely disappointed with all of them. My first two laptops all died within one year. And, my last two were replacement computers given to me by Alienware and lasted no more than two years. They have a bunch of power under the hood and therefore have a short shelf life. Although Alienware computers look really cool on the outside, it's what's on the inside that is horrendous. With exception to the graphics card, the rest of the components are poor quality. And, the engineers at Alienware did a poor job in constructing the computers. Placing the hard drive next to an overheating video card is not smart engineering. Furthermore, screws were missing on the inside and the casing is typically made out of cheap plastic. I highly recommend to stay away from Alienware and consider other high-end gaming computer brands.
That being said there is a major flaw with this laptop. Within 2 months of owning the laptop, the keys started popping off. Dell does have a picture tutorial on how to put this keys back on, but if you follow the tutorial it will often lead to adjacent keys popping off. And if you push too hard when trying to get the keys to latch, then you are out of luck. Luckily my first experience with Alienware customer service ended in a keyboard replacement in less than 2 days from calling tech support. However when it started happening again tech support was not that helpful. I was told I would need to purchase a replacement keyboard for $110! The laptop is under warranty for 4 more months. I was even considering extending the warranty.
My suggestion is to use the built in keyboard as little as possible. I use a logitech keyboard now, my biggest issue is now the laptop does not really travel easily anymore.

First of all, let me say in plain english, Do Not Buy an M17x or any other Alienware PC.I remember that once upon a time, dell was a great company. They built quality consoles, they had the warranty that set the industry standard, they cared about their customer support. It is clear to me that these things no longer matter to Dell. A big name and customer loyalty brings us back time after time. Over the past decade, I have given them dozens of referrals and direct purchases, but in the year since I purchased my dell M17x 8GB with dual Nvidia 260M graphics in SLI and an Intel i7 processor, I have actively scuttled just as many purchases by telling all about my personal experience.
Its unstable. Out of the box, brand spanking new, it barely even qualifies as a paper weight. It took me 3 days, and probably 30 hours to get through simply downloading and installing window's updates, firmware mismatches all kinds of errors and stuff that i'll get into later caused me so many problems that its not even funny. If your top of the line(or at least above average) gaming PC can't even run Mcaffee or your own on-board Aliensense programs, then how the hell are you going to run dragon age, fallout, league of legends, even counterstrike or NES Emus?
So, what kinds of problems did I experience? The laptop will power down completely without even attempting to shutdown windows and completely without warning. The screen goes solid white with a streak of random pixels near the bottom. The computer freezes... FREEZES. I haven't seen that since High-school and Pentium 3. and these errors can occur with or without an obnoxiously loud tone blasting me in the face for a minimum of 3 seconds while i try to hard off the PC.
The obvious issues. Well, first of all there was an obvious NVIDIA driver conflict with something on-board. since alien-sense is the only non-standard program that comes pre-installed, i choose to blame that, however it doesn't really matter. after trying 5-6 other Nvidia drivers I find one that doesn't crash my computer every 30 mins like clockwork. Issue two. Poor design. The screen is too far back, the external shell gets too hot, too fast thanks to poor internal cooling, mother-board has no internal sensors on-board, inferior components like the SSD that they charged me to install but has a SLOWER read/write speed than my last HDD. Also the "break me" button at the top right has no tactile response, no toggle and no "oh i didn't mean to break my pc, UNDO" button. see below.
Less obvious problems. the "break me" button also called "stealth mode" instantly insures that you will not have a moment's rest until you figure out what exactly stealth mode is and why you never-ever want to graze that button. Stealth mode is dell's commitment to green in action. when you touch that button, it will instantly shut off all graphics cards except for the one built into the i7(which cant handle much) underclock your CPU, shut down anything that is drawing power from a USB port, kill your wifi, bluetooth, even your keyboard lighting. anything to conserve power, except of course toggle down the brightness on your monitor. you need to use window's settings to do that. and before you ask, no. you can neither disable, nor change the settings of the "break me" button, and no. once "break me" mode is initiated, you can't turn it off. you must unplug the pc, power down the pc restart the pc, go into the Bios for the PC, mess with the settings re-enabling all the stuff that is disabled(like your USB port and hybrid graphics), plug in your pc and restart it. first of all, the creation of such a button on a GAMING PC is just dumb. next everything it does, you can do through settings or by unplugging your externals, windows calls this "power management." third, there is no way to make this setup stable. i need at least one GPU to run windows for more than 5 minutes without it crashing, period. hence the "break me" button.
also if the laptop comes unplugged, perhaps you foolishly wanted to present a project or surf the web while watching TV you must restart your computer in order to re-enable hybrid graphics, i guess the battery just can't provide that much power. I do get an NVIDIA GPU though which is handy if i'm not interested in gaming or doing anything processor intensive. it should be noted that i needed an alienware patch before, under some circumstances, the power supply that came with the PC was recognized as "the proper" power supply. as if i happened to have a compatible low-watt version hanging out at home and i thought "gee, all computer parts are interchangeable" derp.
presently, my alienware pc is more or less stable. but, needless to say, i came very very close to sending it back before everything clicked. i say more or less because it can still glitch out when i push it and every once in a while when i don't. so i say it again. Don't buy an Alienware M17x. I hear good things about ASUS, Lenovo, and even HP if you aren't obsessive about high end graphics.

I bought this model laptop in December of 2008.HP has come a long way, and they are making terrific laptops these days (as compared to the 1990's). At a given price point for an HP model, you will pay more for a competitor's laptop with the same features.
PROS:
* Excellent screen resolution. If you get the nVidia 512Mb video card, it's even better.
* Included components like DVD drive and hard disk are all very good quality.
* Great quality keyboard, with quiet touch action.
* Finger-touch media controls at top are useful.
* Very attractive looking color scheme, rather conservative relative to the flashy designs HP has come out with today.
* HP released a lot of minor model variations based on the DV5, so replacement parts are fairly easy to obtain (and quite cheap on "that auction site").
* Although my left touch pad key eventually became lose (see below), it hasn't experienced any functional failures in my over 2 years of ownership. I've heard a lot of good things about HP reliability, so don't bother with any pricey extended warranties.
CONS:
* Touch pad keys are fragile. The left one gets used the most and the silver coating will eventually rub off. What's worse is that the button alignment will fatigue and the button becomes loose. This will happen if you do not use an external mouse. I strong suggest getting one. I bought a replacement palmrest part, because the touch pad is integrated into it, and it was VERY tricky installing it. You take apart practically the whole laptop, save the monitor. Sufficiently detailed instructions can be found on-line, so the process is doable (in about 2 hours).
* The semi-gloss palmrest helps diminish the contrast of fingerprints, but they are still prevalent. Same is true for the lid top. My solution for this was to get a "second skin" slim case with microfiber keyboard cover that you can use to wipe down prints. This works well as my laptop still looks new, and it's thin enough to still slide the laptop into a case.
* The battery life is a little below average. The duo core processor and high capacity graphics card suck up resources. You won't get more than 2.5 hours per charge, and that's with conserving the screen brightness.
* The power cord doesn't have a tension pull-away feature, so you can totally mangle it if you trip over the cord.
* Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2 is actually a pretty good operating system, but there are some minor quirks. One is that when the laptop comes out of standby mode, it won't recognize the fingerprint reader for about 5-10 seconds, then it'll see it and function properly.
* Mimicry is the greatest form of flattery, and HP imitated Apple by providing a brightly lit logo on the back of the lid. It's really quite bright, though at least it is in the lower left corner of the lid. Worse come to worse, you could always place a dark sticker over it.
* When in standby, a very bright white LED will flash... so in a dark bedroom, it will be distracting (you have to cover it with something).
I went by Best Buy recently and checked out the latest laptop offerings. The available variety of models is quite numerous in the under $1000 price bracket. I would only get this laptop if you could find it for under $700... but not at the over $900 price currently showing. I bought mine for $845 shipped in 12/08, from a discount website.

I fell in love with this laptop as soon as it started up!It's nice and lightweight, doesn't overheat fast, and starts up quickly.
It's my first Toshiba and I'm completely satisfied with it.
The only thing that seems a bit backwards is when using the "F" keys ie. F5, F8 etc, you have to hold the "FN" or Function button and then whichever F key you want. I learned this the hard way by disabling my track pad accidentally!
Aside from that it's great. I was surprised that there was no removable battery pack, which probably is the reason it's so light! It has a nice long battery life when not plugged in and keeps up its speed.
A huge bonus is one of the USB ports will still charge your accessories while the computer is in sleep mode. Very handy!!
I'm not missing NOT having a cd drive, I still have my old laptop in case I need to burn anything.
My canon printer and all other accessories have been able to sync up fine via USB connections without any additional installation issues.
I've had it for a little over a month, so I'm sure there's still tons to find out about it but so far so good, I highly recommend it!

If what you really do with your laptop is check out websites and your e-mails, download and manage music (that's what I do the most) and maybe some social networking, this one is for you. I'm not into video games, maybe hard core gamers need much more, but I don't. Yes, we all would like to have the last thing out there. For example, I was considering one with Windows 8, but if you think about it, then you would have to upgrade programs you already have like Windows 7-compatible Microsoft Office and maybe buy another printer and who knows what else. Honestly, if you just can't spend $100 more in a new computer, this one is perfect.My former laptop was a 12" Toshiba Satellite but I bought it in 2007. It never crashed or gave me any kind of problem at all, it just felt behind. So I always thought of replacing it with another Toshiba because I trust the brand. I was worried with the size difference (12" vs 14"), but it's so lightweight it's not an issue. And it's so, so fast I love it.
It's an Ultrabook so they don't come with CD/DVD Drives anymore, but I think that's the main reason why they're so light and slender. So I bought Toshiba Portable SuperMulti Drive PA3834U-1DV2 and problem solved. You know you don't use it everyday, so why carry it everyday?
I like the tile keyboard but I guess I have to get used to it because I mispelled more often. And the mouse pad is giant compare to what I had before, also something to get used to. It doesn't have separate bottons for right and left click and that's giving me a hard time. It's like I lose control of the pointer sometimes when I click.
Battery life it's amazing. I couln't believe it but it's true, it lasts a little over 7 hours unplugged. A huge difference compared to my old one. 3 USB, one of them allows you to keep charging even in sleep mode. And now, instead of using a thick and heavy VGA/audio cable to transfer image on screen to my TV, I can use HDMI for better quality.
I bought it almost a month ago and so far so good. I highly recommend it!

Laptop is great but there is one major flaw. The video posted by amazon about this product says that it has a back lit keyboard. IT DOES NOT. I am disappointed by this but I guess I will live with it any way. Don't mean to be negative about the product. I've just used it for a few days but so far very happy. The greatest thing about this computer is it's weight. It is very light and easy to carry around. I had a netbook before but decided to go for something bigger but still wanted something very portable. I don't need the dvd so I don't miss it. We use it mostly for Word and internet and it's pretty fast. Easy to set up. Only thing I don't like is the mouse buttons. They are hard to click especially right click. Other than that after adjusting the mouse speed, the mouse pad responds pretty well to my movements. People complained about the keyboard but it works fine for me.Save 20% Off

I bought this laptop because my old VAIO had slowed down a bit. It took a while messing with this one to get it running the way I'd like but I'm certain that most of that is Windows 8 related and has nothing to do with the laptop. I bought this one due to the fact that my old VAIO served me well for about 5 years and also because this offered a BluRay drive. What I like about this machine: nice screen size, great keyboard (I like the backlighting and number keypad), lightweight, great battery life, good color on the screen. What I dislike: Windows 8. I know all new PC's will be coming with Windows 8 but the OS still seems glitchy to me. I'm not sure if it's a Windows 8 issue or a laptop issue, but browsing is very slow when running more than a couple of tabs. It was especially bad on FIrefox and IE so I'm running Chrome now and try to use no more than two tabs at a time. I've had Sony tech support on the line and they made me feel like my expectations for fast browsing were too high. It still seems slow to me...when an iPad is loading video quicker than this brand new laptop there seems to be a problem. My problem, since I'm not a tech genius, is trying to determine if it's a problem with the computer or OS.

I researched and researched looking for the best machine I could get for my money and I could not be happier after purchasing the Toshiba C855-S5194. But........I purchased it locally at a major office supply store because their 'in store' discount coupled with the $50 rebate was a better price than here. Most of the negative reviews I'd read about *any* laptop was that Windows 8 was horrible. Well, that has nothing to do with the performance of the laptop. AND, Toshiba sends you a free e-copy of Windows 8 for Dummies (only 32 pages) so there's no excuse to say you don't know how to navigate. Memory was a huge selling point for me, there's lots of it on this machine, and it had a better processor than some of the others I was looking at. I did have to change some of the settings on the touchpad because I didn't like the defaults (i.e. to scroll you have to use TWO fingers and I'd rather use one on the side or bottom). You have to be slightly deliberate in your typing, but I'm ok with that too. And I've really been impressed with the battery life. I can work on it for up to four hours (maybe a little more). The web cam is very clear and adjusts the light accordingly. My husband and I Tango (free video chat app) and the images are good (depending on your signal). I installed Office Home Professional without any trouble. It's light for the size it is. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone in the market!

Still, Windows 8 is still an adjustment for me. Please be aware that for these Ultrabooks, you do get a very thin and light laptop, but the thin and light designs means that you sacrifice a CD drive (which is old technology that is fading away). I own an older Toshiba with (Pentium with intel video) which lags on some games and have been shopping for a model with a dedicated video card... this laptop has no problem running ultra settings on games such as skyrim and SWTOR(still in the process of installing my other games).I was looking for a laptop to replace my older desktop and this one seems to be the one.
My first windows 8 machine, so I am still figuring that out... I will be ordering more RAM for this laptop (it came with 6 I'm going to take it to 16)
As far as what I use it for (programming, gamming, videos internet etc.... this is a great priced nice running laptop... I'm sure a laptop such as alienware would put this one to shame but as far as I can see this less expensive model runs my games just fine.

Stylish laptop with a nice layout. The problem with this laptop is the lack of backlit keys. Amazing how you don't realize you miss that feature till it's not there. Also, windows 8, I wanted a laptop not a tablet. Windows 8 is designed for a touch screen interface and is irritating on this format. They advertise this computer as one with an HD screen. It's not... Everything seems to be OK but that.The build seems nice, the keyboard feels OK, the price is excellent. The speakers are not great, but for a laptop, the do the job.
I will update this later as I use it a bit more. I just set it up some minutes ago.
Update, some days later: As I said, the computer performs very well, the i5 processor is very fast. I plugged it to my TV through HDMI and it works flawlessly. I'm planning to buy an external AOC screen for photo editing (a big one perhaps).
I for the price we have paid, we could not ask for anything better.
I am waiting for the price of the ultrabooks to go down to replace my Lenovo notebook PC but until then we will stick with the traditional notebooks around in the marketplace.Be Careful!!! The Dell C640 may be an older model yet it is surprisingly adroit with Windows XP SP3 running 512MB of RAM. The Dell physical specs include a screen with a large LCD screen, two mouse options (eraser button mouse-stick and trackpad), the front LCD clasp is held with one button (a bit stiff on several tested, should help to keep closed however). The front bays are dual purpose media (right) or battery (right and left). Two used battery packs provided a comfortable 5 1/2 hours of light internet usage. There is a MiniPCI expansion port underneath with prewired antennae that route unseen through the LCD lid casing. Lacking a card I simply used a Belkin PCMCIA / PCCard adapter with excellent results. The keyboard was another unexpected treat with quiet but firm action.The Intel Pentium 4-M processor can use SpeedStep and other power saving techniques. When running off the battery it will drop down to a lower speed rating. When docked or back on AC power it kicks back up to the full speed. While in idle mode it barely seemed to sip the battery. This Latitude was made for business class use and thus sports a docking station connector which is a great investment if only to relieve the stress of repeated AC adapter plug-ins at home. The AC adapter from Dell uses a keyed beveled connector that looks engineered to reduce such AC plug issues that plague all laptops. The laptop is a nice black with some attempt to put a few minimal curving lines, since it was meant to appeal to a staid business environment you can expect a primarily blocky look common to PC laptops. The large medallion like silver Dell logo on the lid cover looks nice. A good solid laptop.

Was some damage done to the laptop either during shipping or was shipped with the indention in the back corner of the laptop. The laptop does work well and came with all of the software that the seller stated would be on the laptop. Recieved it right on time,and it looked brand new not a wear spot anywere.I use it mainly for my magicjack phone.It would also be good for small kids to learn on. The hard drive is to small to add anything, but for my purpose its great.
Alienware m15x-472CSB 15-Inch Gaming Laptop (Cosmic Black)
I placed the order for this computer Thursday night, and with one day shipping received it Saturday morning. Both Amazon and UPS have figured this logistics thing out.Out of the box everything looks great. All of the specs lined up except one... it says it has an 8-cell battery; however, seeing that they don't make an 8 cell battery for this laptop, i have to think that maybe they meant to say a 9-cell battery? Well either way, that's not what this laptop hasit has a 6 cell battery. This gives you a lofty 1 hour of battery life just idling in windows. Now if you buy this kind of laptop, the chances of you just sitting in windows are fairly slim. The gaming battery life, I'm not sure, but I'm not holding my breath for more than 20 minutes.
That may not be much of a gripe, considering that this is more like a portable desktop, but it is irritating when you buy something that's misadvertised.
As for the performance, I was playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 last night and it looked stellar!
Bottom line, Dell quoted me a computer with the exact same specs, but they wanted $1900, so I see this as a bargain.
After about 5 days of using it very lightly, I did get a blue screen of death saying it had crashed, but it rebooted no problem so I am hoping that was just a one time deal as it did it while the Starcraft 2 program was open and that has happened to me on 2 other computers as well while running the game.
A few things that are inconvenient about the product is the fact that it only has 2 USB ports. I knew this before purchasing it, figuring I would just use the laptop keyboard for gaming, but it didn't feel comfortable, so I use my external keyboard, which uses the 2nd USB port leaving my headphone/microphone set unable to be used.
For what I am using it for, the computer is working great with only a few minor setbacks, but for the price, I am not complaining. On the actual Alienware site, the same system would run roughly 300-400 more so I strongly recommend ordering it on Amazon.
With minor problems and a good price, this computer will run your gaming relatively well for people on a moderate sized budget.

The computer is still going strong, I haven't gotten a blue screen of death besides that one time. It runs Starcraft 2 on the new Extreme settings perfectly.
The price of the product has gone up $400 on Amazon so I would not say it is as good of a deal, but so far this laptop has proven very useful.

My last laptop was a 17" Sony and I wanted something a little bit smaller. My choices were between an ASUS Republic of Gamer laptop and the Alienware. I decided on the alienware due to the amount of troubling posts about hardware failure with ASUS products. The only real problem I saw with Alienware products were people complaing of cost. I do not know about you, but I was raised under the old saying that you get what you pay for. And I have been very pleased with my new Alienware laptop. I will let you know that you will need to contact Alienware to transfer your 1 year warranty from Amazon to yourself and if you so desire you can purchase longer coverage from Alienware as well. Now, I will also say that this laptop is a little heavy for a 15". A lot of people do not like the touchpad, I am indifferent about it considering I never use it anyway, I prefer wireless mice. Also your battery will geek out very fast unless you alter your power settings. Mine lasts about 2 hours, however I am normally wired in anyway so that really does not bother me. This laptop was purchased to go offshore with me and allow me to play games as well as be my main computer at home where it stays put. It has performed very well. All my games run at high to ultra settings without any issues at all. Heck even playing World of Warcraft, I can run into any high populated zones with all settings maxed out and still get 60 to 70fps. One last bit of information for you as well, this exact build on Alienwares website usually runs several hundred dollars more than on Amazons website. I admit that when I bought this laptop, I was expecting to be blown away. I expected the best machine out there. While I am impressed with the m15x's performance, it's got some issues. I purchased mine over a year ago from Dell's alienware site. I debated for a while before pulling the trigger. Let me go over my pros and cons after having it for a year:Pros:
1. It's just plain cool. It's a great looking computer. The lights on the keyboard and everywhere else are just fun to play with.
2. It's very solid. Some might call this heavy, but I don't mind. It feels sturdy and that's what I wanted.
3. It runs well and does what I need it to do. I haven't had any problems running games and programs when I need to.
4. The keyboard is great. I really like the design of each key, which is awesome since I write a lot.
5. Good speakers. I've always liked the sound when watching a movie with my wife or kids.
Cons
1. My first complaint is the AC plug. After lots of use, it easily slips out of its jack from the computer with very little pressure. It can be very very annoying.
2. The touchpad is terrible. I considered sending it back b/c I hated the touchpad so much. The buttons are too hard to push and the pad itself is just meh. I do use a mouse a lot, so this isn't a huge issue.
3. Heat. This computer can generate a lot of heat, and I've been painfully burned a couple of times (not second or third degree mind you) but enough that I've remembered it. It can get pretty darn hot, and I think I'm running an i3 processor.
4. The wireless card isn't great. I don't seem to pick up signals as well as other people's laptops or even ipads. Very disappointing.
5. Home and delete keys are too close together, and I often hit them on accident. A little space would have been nice.
6. The rubber stoppers that protect the screen from completely closing down on the keyboard/base lasted about 1 or 2 months. Never found them.
Fortunately, I've never had to use costumer service. I've never had any major issues. So I'd really give it 3.5 stars if I could. But I can't justify the price again for something that's not absolutely mind blowing, like I expected this to be. It's been a fine machine but I would buy something different next time.

First i got this laptop off alienware.com not on amazon because i like it custom build with my name on the back. the performance is super fast. but people say u can get the same spec or better spec for cheaper price on other brand. but i tell u dell didn't give this a high price just because they want it to. this laptop should be at this high price because the screen is a full glass screen and with 5.1 speaker which are super loud. There is no laptop in the world that can do the LED on the keyboard and front grill as the alienware can. u can change it to any color. i got this from dell because u can have a custom name plate on the back for free. which on amazon u just get a plate that say m15x. the keyboard feel very well. the body of this is like aluminum and the cooling fan cool this thing very well(never put this on ur lap, it will be hot). the weight of this thing is a problem. it add a lot of weight to my backpack for trips. its weight like 8-10 lb. the charger for this laptop is big also and it goes hot as well. the battery is kinda bad because at powersaver mode 100% charge with screen turn all the way low and no LED on. the battery last 1 hour and 10 min doing nothing. u can not play game on this laptop when in battery mode because when its in battery the performence will be cut in half and even if u do play game it will take ur battery down to 0% in 10-20min. but when its plug in this is the Beast it will kill ur game!!!. in my word this is better than a MAC PRO because the price on this is cheaper and more performance than the mac pro. And alot of people has mac pro but u dont see an alienware often. when i take my alienware to libary u see people with mac pro and u have a alienware it feel like u have a lamborghini in a bunch of Porsche. and this computer does look like lamborghini. if money is not a problem with u and weight is also not a problem then this is the one to go. if u are going to use this for school i dont think u should go for this because the battery life is just bad and the weight will kill u when u have alot of text book in ur bag.. over all a very very very nice laptop i love mine

From what i can tell this is the exact same model as the dm4-1160us except with a smaller hard drive. That smaller hard drive should result in a $50 price reduction, but i picked this one up at Office Depot for $ after a $ mail in rebate. Due to the unusually low price i was convinced something must be wrong with this computer, but it's awesome. I've read complaints about the mousepad on the 1160... i'm not sure what they're referring to cause it's been perfectly fine for me, infact its been better than the asus, dell, and compaq laptops i've had in the past.If you're game player with heavy graphics needs you should pass on this model. But if you're a business users or home user who wants a light, solidly built, good performing laptop with great battery life, then I'm sure you'll love this computer even at a $700 price tag.
Compounding the sudden loss of USB ports (essential for laptops these days), this laptop has several other reliability problems including a battery that no longer holds a charge more than an hour, a screen that sometimes flickers (apparently a loose connection somewhere), and sporadic failures to come out of sleep mode (requiring removing the battery and rebooting).
No wonder HP is getting out of the laptop business.

I'm very happy with this dell m90. This is the kind of computer not intended to go anywhere but still mobil, say from the office to home on the weekends for example. It may not be the latest technology out there but it is still a great computer for a great price!

I am pleasantly surprised that this laptop is actually amazing fast. I have had this for about two months now. Here are my findings. the keyboard is great , nice quick motion, wish it was a backlit though. The screen res is above average rating and the sound from the harmon kardon speakers are amazing. The battery life is about 2-2 1/2 hours of just internet, email, streaming movies. The build quality looks and feels solid compared to other toshiba models. The bluray was an added bonus , perfect size for traveling. I really don't have any complaints so far for this model. I only wished that the keyboard was backlit. I would like to upgrade on this model replacing the keyboard with a backlit one but I believe it does not support it? Can anyone confirm?

I've had this little guy for over a year now and it's been great. I'm a photographer and I use Lightroom and Photoshop quite a bit. A couple of months ago my desktop pc crashed and this guy has had to pick up my workload and it's really performed well considering it's not designed to be a big graphics pc. Plus I have it hooked up to my tv so I can watch movies from the blu-ray player. My only complaint is the Eco Energy saver is terrible when it comes to the WiFi, if the machine isn't plugged in the WiFi goes in and out. A minor annoyance.Great reliable little computer. More than enough power for casual use, and offers great entertainment. Loud speaker and blu ray player. very happy;)

I bought this laptop in december 2010. The laptop worked fine for 6 months i.e SIX MONTHS before a portion of my screen went blank. No there was no spills no falls, nothing but a faulty screen. Could not return it seeing as my time to return it to amazon had passed, i called toshiba and they said that they don't build faulty screens. They have never in there life of production built a faulty screen and hence i must have punched my computer or just sat on it because that the normal things people do with their computer. Need less to say I did not get it repaired they told me i have to pay 465 to repair it. which was 2/3s of what i payed for it.If you are one of those people that feel the need to change a laptop every year this is the perfect laptop for you. If you need your computer to last long and you want a good warranty DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP.

Apple MacBook MB881LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)
My review... take it for what it is... mine. (I provide my story so that you can see why I purchased this computer. If you don't care, don't read the review).To me, Mac always seemed like it would take a leap of faith. Having had very little interaction with Macs and even less knowledge about them, I was set to be a Windows boy for life. However, recently I found out that I will be going on a ship that is gone all of the time (I'm in the Navy). Needing to have my kids see me reading books to them and me needing to see my kids, I planned on leaving my current laptop with my wife and getting a new one for me (she doesn't care about electronics). This way we could create DVDs and send them to each other for our kids and myself. I went into a store looking to spend not too much and was attracted by the HP entertainment laptops. However... when looking at a $ laptop I knew I would have to add an anti-virus ($-$) and a movie making program ($-$). The guy at the store told me that for what I was looking at in price I should check out the Macs.
Low and behold... there were the Macs. Each sitting there, looking different, and pricey. I was then told about iLife and how I would be able to use iMovie to make my movies, iChat to chat with my family on webcam, iPhoto to import and fix up pictures, and other stuff. WoW! My previous experience with the Windows based programs of this nature was that you'd be better off buying these types of software than using what was included by the computer. However, the sales guy, who was not on commission, swore by them. Also, Macs don't need anti-virus software to boot! I was sold when he told me the difference in the customer satisfaction index when comparing Macs and all of the other computer makers.
I took the plunge.
As you can see from my stars... I'm glad I did. I will NEVER go back to a windows based PC. EVER. While this computer has a few cons, which I will list later, it is much better than what you can get for the same price as far as a PC. Here is what I liked:
The Exterior:
This computer is small. Its compact, it feels really sturdy, and its stylish. There is an apple on the back that lights up from the light of the LCD screen, pretty neat. Also, the keys have just the right punch for those of us that know how to type. The F keys also double for the bright level of the screen, the feature expose (which is outstanding!), and movie stop, go, vol, etc. There is an eject button next to the F12, which works well with this type of drive.
The Interior: iLife is a great program. All of the stuff that comes with it will ensure that unless you need something very very professional you won't have to buy any software. Home videos are awesome with this thing. I can't really compare Leopard to the previous operating systems... since this is my first mac... but I can tell you that it kicks vista's butt. An example; I wanted to hook up my printer, which has only been used on Windows PCs before, and I plugged it in. That's it. I plugged it in and it worked. No drivers, no software, nothing. As soon as I plugged it in and click to make it my default printer it was printing. HOLY COW! THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN MISSING! Since I've started using my Mac I have had ZERO "trying to find a solution to the problem" pop ups, ZERO "this program has stopped working", ZERO freezes, ZERO compatibility issues with current hardware (external drive of music and wireless network), and ZERO defects found.
Now the cons:
1) 120 GB hard drive... Yes its easy to hook up the "time machine" or to keep all of your photos or movies on an external hard drive, but for a company that has a 120 GB MP3 player that's just over $... come on!
2) The mouse pad doesn't let you double click for actions to occur. You have to push the button. As a lifetime Windows user this took some getting used to. However... you can scroll up and down easily by using two fingers. I've enjoyed this so much that I'm going to call it a draw :)
3) No multimedia slot for media card, etc. Apple! What are you doing?!?! Its a simple thing to install and it make it much easier for me so that I don't have to always remember where that stupid USB cord that hooks my camera to my computer is. I'd much rather take the card out and insert it.
That's all of my cons.
Once again... I LOVE THIS MAC. On the 2 GB of RAM that it has it works just as well as a windows PC with 4 or more GB. That's because the OS is designed better and the processes don't bog it down. The processor is fast enough to where this seems faster than my wifes 2.4 gHZ laptop (of course that is in conjunction with other aspects of the computer). The colors are great, and the system is great. You WILL have the "Mac Learning Curve" as I was told... it takes about 4-5 hours to get used to and 10-15 to really get to know, but its worth it. Plus, Apple puts videos on each function so that when you open it, it explains how to use it.
I took the leap of faith, and now I'm a believer. So long windows!!! Never again! Spend the extra - bucks... you'll save it anyway by not having to get the anti-virus and having all the stuff you need on it. Oh, and go to after you get your Mac. Its a non-profit site that I've started using to help me learn the system and it's great.

***UPDATE***
Still using this MacBook and still loving it. I've gotten really good with what it has to offer and am still amazed at how easy it is to use compared to Windows based PCs. The iLife 09 software (incl) has proven itself very useful and works well with other software. An example, Photoshop works well with iPhoto. I haven't run into any wall and still recommend it with 5 stars.
This White 2.0 MacBook is a terrific combination of price and features: you can expect similar performance to the uni-body Aluminum 2.0 MacBooks, but $100s cheaper. Plus, this MacBook comes with FireWire and uses cheaper DDR2 ram. Only significant trade off that I can see is losing the uber-cool uni-body design. Less significant is not getting the uni-Body's LED backlight, multi-touch, and some monitor support.
Comparing this MacBook to previous generation MacBooks (non-unibody); the change to the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M will provide a large boost in graphics performance over the Intel units. Supposedly, this is new hardware that OS X 10.6 will be able to take further advantage of.
Overall performance has surprised me. I had planned to drop in 4GB of ram and a 7200 rpm hard drive, but I am so pleased with the operation that I just don't see the need. I use it for web browsing, iPhoto, Mail, Word, Excel, etc. So far I have not experienced any stutters or pauses. If I were to run Vista apps or edit HD video, I am sure that this might change the need for more ram.
Regarding comfort, I have not noted any heat build-up, nor is there excessive fan noise. Keep in mind that I haven't taxed it much. The overall build quality seems fine.
Through the years I usually bought from Apple's refurb store, but I am am very pleased with this purchase and feel that I received an excellent value.
Follow-up Feb 26, 2009: "Still 5 Stars"
After several weeks of use on a daily basis, I continue to be impressed by this product and just how much OS X has advanced (and I am also a very heavy XP/Vista laptop user in my professional life). Everything just comes together so well and this MacBook's performance continues to surprise me. I just slammed it pretty hard by applying facial recognition to our 12,000+ piece iPhoto library and it just works great. Apple sure made up some ground in the last couple years.

My first Apple was an Apple II Plus way back in 1980. Those five hundred dollar each 5.25 drives still haunt me. Then came 1985 and I switched to Microsoft and sold my box of Apple stuff. Since then I have been a Windows user both personally and professionally, finishing up a third career as a systems person managing hundreds of installations, servers etc etc. Upon retirement (who else has three laptops and five desktops running Linux, XP, Vista, and now OS X) I began to dabble once again in the Apple world. I think it was Vista that pushed me over the edge; Vista and all the evildoers who try to infect our PC machines with viruses and malware. Dante should have a new circle of Hell for them.First I tried a MacMini to try out the operating system. It wasn't easy to upgrade but I did it--bigger HD and more memory. I love that little machine and it was cheap.
Then my old Toshiba laptop began to exhibit signs of death. Time for a decision. I could continue to use my test box Dell laptop D600 (solid machine) with three swapping HD's--Linux, XP, and FreeBSD (yeah, I know), or make the switch to Apple for good.
Being retired and semi-poor, I researched and went with this new MacBook White 2.0. First you just have to upgrade the HD and memory, but that is easy and cheap. The Momentus 320/7200 and some Crucial memory are the way to go, and your total cost is only about 130 bucks. Using SuperDuper to clone the drive is dead easy.
The MacWhite is kinda ugly, no doubt about it. Even my wife who is a very practical, no nonsense computer user and never cares what a computer looks like as long as it works, said it was an ugly little thing, yes? And yes, for the same bucks you can get a seemingly faster PC laptop with bigger screen. But hey, for a bigger screen, I use my MacMini on a nice old 19inch LCD. Laptops are for laps, for traveling, for packing around, and for daily use. If you can only afford one and want both, then by all means spend a couple of grand and get the big one with 17inch screen.
Overall I like the following: OS is a dream to use; ergonomics the best, software better than most and no time wasted on all that junk that you have to do to keep XP/Vista safe and running smoothly. Could that be the Unix ancestry? I think so. Weight and size are just fine for my needs. It is portable and connects quickly to foreign and domestic networks. I like the firewire that they kept, and the superdrive they added. I like the keyboard and ease of cleaning the case.
Things I would change if Apple hired old computer guys from the trenches: keypad on this model probably not as cool as that on the more expensive model; a black model would cost so much to offer for the same price; the display okay but again probably not as cool as the 1250 dollar model of the same machine with the aluminum case and backlit screen. Which has a smaller carbon footprint--polycarbonate or aluminum? Who knows. It seems tough and probably won't dent.
If you want good guts, though, and aren't a fashion conscious poser, then this is the box for you. Take the 3 or 4 hundred dollar savings and buy some extra goodies--bluetooth mouse, case, and some software plus upgrades and you will be much happier.
If you want a gamer, go upscale or get a high-end PC. I have Fusion on my MacMini and the Vista package only gets used about once a month. I may try the boot camp routine on this laptop if Windows 7 is worth anything, then again, by then I may be totally brainwashed and have only Linux and OS X.? Ubuntu sure has come a long way.
The price schedule could be improved for Apple products but then again, sometimes even a used Lexus is a better deal than a new Chevy.

P.S. Oh yes, there are lots of good videos, training materials etc to get you from PC to Mac. And one last thing: their delete key is too bizarre: it is really a backspace key, but you can fool it into becoming a PC delete key by holding down the fn key while you use it, then it goes forward like we old PC geeks are used to seeing.

I have been a long time Windows user and have switched to Apple Leopard. I finally got so fed up with the Vista operating system that I ordered a Mac Book from Amazon. I received the package on time, the ordering process was painless just a few clicks. I got a newest version of this laptop. Not really knowing what to expect from this little laptop, I was pleasantly surprised that the learning curve is a lot easier than I thought it would be. I am very impressed with the way this laptop works, it is fast, it looks fantastics, and oh, my God, it turns on quicker. I have had Vista for a long time and sometimes I had to sit and wait for the operating system to start up (as long as 12 minutes timed). This one is ready to go in about 30 seconds, got to love it.I am very impressed with the service I got from Amazon I'll be a long time customer!!

It hardly needs to be said that Apple computers are superior and, consequently, one expects a great deal from them. The MacBook is certainly a significant upgrade from its predecessors. As compared to the iBook, it is physically a great improvement, thinner, lighter even, despite the wide screen, nifty magnetic power attachment, better catch, more solid keyboard, and there are numerous software features itemized in the product description and other reviews. However, I should like to point out several flaws in the MacBook, which, though not serious, are important enough for me to rate the product with only four stars, even though I love it and think it's great. These are:1. The bottom edge of the MacBook is quite sharp unlike that of the iBook, which was smoothly rounded. When you rest your palms on it it to use the trackpad, it is not at all comfortable.
2. The high gloss screen may be nice, but if you are using the computer seated in a chair with a reading light behind you, there is an annoying glare.
3. I have had trouble with uncontrolled scrolling, the thing fairly frequently takes off wildly on its own. I never had this problem with the iBook; perhaps it's only a flaw in my particular MacBook.
4. I have a problem with AppleWorks freezing frequently, although it unfreezes if you press "save". Nevertheless, I never had this occur with the iBook.
5. Lastly, one might expect the MacBook to load faster than the iBook. Sorry, it just doesn't; if anything it loads a trifle slower. This is perhaps a reason for buying the more expensive model.
These complaints are not major and there are so many advantageous features to the MacBook, including price, that I nevertheless strongly recommend it. --By the way I encourage the user to try the really great speech feature; let your Mac read a book to you from Text Edit or from the Adobe Acrobat Reader. (You can download free practically every classic you can think of from ) I am totally in love with the Vicki MacInTalk synthetic voice!
Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4050 14-Inch LED Laptop (Fusion Finish, Helios Black)
The L640-L655 Toshibas have a serious software and BIOS issue with the cooling fan. The issue is well-documented on the official Toshiba forum. The cooling fan runs fast and loud (you will not be able to use this computer in airplanes, libraries, classrooms, group work sessions, etc. due to fan speed). The loud fan will prematurely wear out the fan spindle, and uses excessive battery. I am encouraging anyone even considering the purchase of these lines of TOshiba computers to do online research and search these words: Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly. You will see many threads, but the main one has now thousands of views and elucidates the problem well. If you don't wish to look at it now, you will be looking at it intently once you purchase this model of TOshiba. Thus far, there is no fix for this cooling fan software issue. I am posting here as an owner of a Toshiba in this product line and simply as a method to help my fellow Amazon shoppers with a known issue. Google "Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly on", or highlight and right click what I have type here to see the 13 page thread on this subject. The most recent 5 pages are 3-4 non-Toshiba computer programmers trying to solve the problem as Toshiba has been uncaring and useless. The key is to read the thread from the beginning to review all the people who first define the problem. I encourage anyone seeking a Toshiba computer to review the thread to see if their model is affected before purchase--most models are with AMD processors, but some are Intel latest chipsets (e.g. i5). It is not "a few bad computers", it is computers in each of the series specified. The post on the Toshiba Forum from FunkeA dated May 30, 2011 at 4:11pm has a list of Toshibas affected by this issue.

The design is very good. I bought this computer for my 9 year old nephew. It is easy to use, yet allows your processor to work fast and efficiently. Although the use that we are giving is very basic I'm sure you can work heavier.It has built-in web cam is an important detail.
We have not had any kind of technical failure, so we are very happy. By the excellent results already bought another one.Purchase on December 15, 2010, still have it working it very hard to until around jan 2012 the keyboard finally need to change reason some keys refuse to type. got another replacement keyboard for and it is still going strong. up to now i have no heating issues or break down. recommend to other but i did got it on deal for 459 last time.

This is my first AND LAST Toshiba product! Bought two laptops (L645DS4050) last December and just having WAY too many issues with them both. My kids complain constantly about various issues including NOISE (very noisy fan, running hot, random shutdowns and rebooting issues etc. etc.Now one of them has a broken left click button too! Not to mention the very cheap feel of these things. My Dell Inspiron is 10 times quieter, better quality and ZERO issues.

Asus Eee Pc 900hd
I purchased an ASUS 900HD nine months ago and it has seen very light use. The power supply quit working about three weeks ago. I submitted a help request on their Web site and after waiting for three weeks with no reply, called them. The woman I spoke with tried to trouble shoot the problem (try a different electrical outlet duh) all of which I had already tried. Then she told me since it was nine months old, the battery (understandable) and power adaptor (not understandable) was out of warranty (six months for 'accessories'). I told her I was extremely unhappy and asked if she would like to make an unhappy customer happy for the relatively low price of a power adaptor (retail $49.99, their cost = much less). Nope. So I went online to the Web site she provided and they are out of stock. So now I have a paperweight until ASUS can restock power supplies. My question, which I will never know the true answer is: Why are they out of power adaptors? Is this a systemic problem? For the light use this adaptor has seen in nine months (actually it started giving me intermittent problems in eight months)this is a very poor product.
Around four months in, the A/C adapter that came with it had burned out, but I replaced it for relatively cheap with an off-brand adapter.
Aside from that, my netbook has occasionally stopped responding to its volume commands, but I found that restarting fixes it.
Overall, this netbook is very durable and can be used for extended periods of time. I have yet to overheat mine. I do suggest that you are prepared for replacing the A/C adapter, however.This pc looks sleek and compact but it hanged most of the time. The battery does not hold the charge good and the processor is very slow on window Xp. Lately, after I downloaded the microsoft framework files and window explorer 8 version, it did have improving the speed of the processor and I noticed it did work a little bit faster.

I know I get what I pay for, but I didn't expect this netbook to be basically disposable. I had problems with the touchpad and click keys not responding within the first couple months. I sent it in for repair and got it back without anything seemingly having been done to it. After a few more months, add to this that the computer would intermittently behave as though the shift key was stuck (I think you can't realize how many problems this creates unless you try itvery difficult to use the computer for anything!) Since it was intermittent, and was my only computer at that point, I waited a few more months to send it in. They sent it back and it wouldn't even start up after I removed it from the packaging! They now refuse to repair it since by the time I received it back the warranty had expired (although they sent it back more broken...). It starts up now, but only runs for 20 mins max before crashing for a few hours.It's a cute little pocket laptop, but be aware it seems to be made of the cheapest possible components (expected for price, but still frustrating). Also, be aware you can only reach support in the middle of the night (I never once got through at any time of the day, with 20-30min wait times at least). I always call after midnight; the people don't know anything about computers, but they're fairly polite.
I expected this netbook to be low-quality based on price. Low rating is mainly for refusal to repair what they broke. I suggest saving up a little longer and putting money towards a less extremely-feeble budget laptop (or for mobility, maybe a smartphone? even smaller, similar quality).
