HP Pavilion dm4-2050us Notebook PC (Silver)

HP Pavilion dm4-2050us Notebook PCI bought this laptop in the summer of 2010 at Costco and it has been holding up very well.

People compliment its appearance, I enjoy its 14" screen, and I use it all the time.

It's reasonably fast and is able to execute any of the programs I use easilyI spend a lot of time on Photoshop, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Office. I love the memory card readerworks so quickly! I kinda wish it had more USB ports, but that is made up for because it has an HDMI port.

Sometimes it glitches and I end up rebooting to fix the problem, nothing terribly catastrophic so far. My complaints would be the loud factor"waking it up" it makes a LOT of noise, very quiet speakers (no I haven't blown them out), and now I'm not so impressed with the battery lifeI can't go my whole school day (maximum 4 hours of being on the computer) without it needing a charge, even on lowest brightness settings and not running any programs besides Chrome and Word or Powerpoint. I've gotten used to carrying my charger around with me, as much as I don't like the extra item in my backpack.

I can't say I'm impressed or unimpressed with the fingerprint reader or any HP software itself.

Overall, the machine works and I'm content.

She recently started a new job that requires her to have her own lap top. This worked out perfect, for the price she was surprised at how powerful the computer is and it does fit her needs perfectly.

I have to admit I saw this at Costco and bought it online primarily for the aesthetic qualities. I purchased it about a year and a half ago but only recently started to use it frequently. Finally far too late given that this particular model is a little outdated I can write a review.

The keyboard is comfortable. It's an island keyboard with fairly squared off chicklet keys, and no backlight. The keyboard is high-contrast and easy to read, even just by the light cast from the screen in relatively low light. It's a nice soft-touch keyboard but I have to admit it takes some getting used to. They key travel is not as restricted as some netbooks, but no better than others. What this means is that if you're accustomed to the key punch travel from an 'old style' 100% laptop keyboard or a full-size desktop keyboard, this will seem a little awkward. Sometimes I miss a few keys, have to hit M and left shift a little harder than I expect to for the key press to register.

The screen is bright, crisp and colorful. It's not leap-out-at-you bright and super-saturated colorful like a Samsung or Apple display but this, as with most HPs, is really very bright and crisp anyway. Contrast on the screen is medium; I may see if the Intel HD 3000 software has any ability to increase contrast a smidgen. The viewing angle is good, colors are intact and image is clear up to around 35-40 degrees and starts to wash out around 45 degrees. It's not 180-degree viewing.

I upgraded this one to 6GB RAM, but don't really do anything too intensive. RAM is so cheap, though, that I always tend to 'overkill-upgrade' all my new laptops. If you're spending $500 to $1000 on a laptop, and overkill-RAM is only another $20 to $60... why not? The performance is very snappy on this thing, even old Core i3 is plenty of horsepower to push around PDFs, Word Docs, graphics editing, videos. I haven't attempted any gaming on it yet, but any laptop without a discrete GPU is going to be so-so. In every case, it'll run older 3D games in low res and newer RTS or RPG games in low res but that's just about it. This isn't designed for gaming.

In everyday desktop computing, the thing stays perfectly cool, just about the best I've seen for any laptop. After an entire day of browsing, documents, charging the phone, plugging in the USB thumb drive, etc., the bottom is still BARELY warm. Again, I haven't tried any games, but this thing isn't going to really cook unless you try to watch a movie or play a FPS game on it.

It has the standard DVD-RW combo drive, and maybe the only less-than-solid part of this notebook is that the cosmetic shell of the DVD drive the silver outside edge of the DVD door is a LITTLE loose. There are three USB (I believe USB 2.0) ports, one full-size HDMI, Ethernet, VGA, headphone, mic, and SD card slot a standard, complete compliment of ports. It also has a fingerprint scanner, which I've actually found to work really well. I generally only use it to unlock the notebook but to date, I have never once needed to re-scan a fingerprint. It has worked 100% accurately scanning my index finger over several hundred tries. This is a neat feature in that it encourages you to be a little more secure about your personal information without much inconvenience. Most of the time I do not put a password on personal computers, only work computers.

I have not exercised the battery life. For my purposes I rarely use it for more than a meeting or an hour here or there off the wire.

Finally, the aesthetic. The brushed aluminum shell is very attractive. Feels cool to the touch and very solid. The specs say 1.27" thick but it feels very light and slender at that. It feels nice when you carry it, it fits in my attache. The lid and the keyboard surface have the aluminum surface. On the keyboard surface, there's a thin strip of polished metal around the edges of the keyboard tray and mouse, which is a nice touch. The bezel around the screen is gloss black plastic and the bottom is textured black plastic. The keyboard tray is also black plastic. That's slightly regrettable; although you don't spend a whole lot of time looking at the bottom of your laptop (or, YOU may, but I don't) it's still nice to see when you're folding it up and putting it away, and nice to feel the same smooth, solid material when you hold it. This isn't a new lesson for HP. The brushed aluminum ProBooks from this same generation had a brushed aluminum bottom case as well. Of course it's a cost cutting decision and this isn't a high-end laptop, so it's well within expectation. If you care enough to have metal on the bottom of your laptop and in between the keys, there are plenty of options available. Sony, Apple, Asus, HP, etc. etc.

When I rate any consumer product I always consider "value" to be the final deciding factor. No product is completely, 100% perfect, with every possible feature and convenience. It's always a weighted evaluation of what you get for what you paid. As mentioned, this notebook has some very nice features and a nice form factor, and I believe I got it at a pretty good price, less than Costco or Amazon's current price. Even with a RAM upgrade it's a great deal. Although the 2050us model may be a bit dated by now, I would highly recommend a current dm4 model if you're looking for an attractive, portable, reasonably powerful full laptop with a full-size keyboard and optical drive for day to day browsing, documents, graphics, videos and movies.

It is very light but durable. 4 gigs is plenty for me. I like the cordless camera download feature. My last HP lasted 6 years before I justed needed an upgrade. It didn't breakdown. Hoping for the same with this laptop. Keyboard keys are not super small making it easy for me to type.

eMachines EMD528-2496 Laptop Computer with Windows 7

eMachines EMD528-2496 Laptop Computer with Windows 7This laptop was on sale at Bestbuy for $200 plus tax. While this laptop is the lowest end laptop that you are going to get and they do cut corners, it does have some good features. I am surprised that this laptop has webcam, sd card reader and HDMI.

The feel of 'cheapness' is apparent by the construction of the laptop, but keyboard and trackpad is okay. This laptop also has only 1 speaker and this speaker doesn't produce a very loud sound. This laptop only has a 4 cell battery and the battery life lasts about 2 hours. The matte screen doesn't have a good viewing angle.

The laptop has 1 2gb ddr3 memory which should be enough for your needs, but you can upgrade it to as much as 8gb of ram as this laptop supports 4gb sodimms. Be warned though, this laptop doesn't have a memory 'panel' as you have to remove 24 screws on the back panel if you want to upgrade. The celeron 925 cpu is about 2 generations behind the current lot of cpu. The good news is that this laptop supports .45 micron core2duo and pentium cpus which is available in ebay for cheap. I brought the intel pentium t4200 for less than $10. Upgrading the cpu does give the laptop acceptable performance.

I got this laptop on special from Best Buy for $199. I looked online and I found that the processor is a standard socket P CPU so found a T6400 CPU on ebay for $15 and I also got 4 GB of DDR3 RAM on Newegg for $14 and replaced the Celeron CPU and the 2 gb of ram, so now I have a really nice and fast dual core laptop for a total investment of $228 (plus tax). MUCH better than a stupid netbook which are selling for $250 and up and they dont have the bigger screen, usually come with 1-2 gb of ram and a slower processor (even slower than the celeron processor that came with this). My only complaint is that the laptop feels cheap (well, it actually is cheap)the plastic they used for the casing feels really thin and breakable so I wouldn't give this laptop to a kid.

This laptop is a great deal. I got it for my Wife after her Netbook bit the dust and she absolutely loves it. It started up fast, not a ton of pre installed junk with the exception of Norton Trial, but I quickly uninstalled it and put on MSE. Windows 7 is nice and over all the computer is quick and perfect for your average user (Skype, Youtube, MSN and Whatnot) I read a lot of reviews that people felt the plastic seemed cheap, but I disagree. I think it's actually quite nice. Plus the unit overall is far cooler and lighter than my Gateway that is the same size. I kinda want one for myself now, hehe.

For my needs this laptop is fine. I just use it for online shopping and web browsing. However, after only a few days of using it several of the keys on the keyboard started acting up. Sometimes they would work sometimes they wouldn't. I called customer support and they had me send it in for repair. Apparently when they received it the keys worked for them so they just sent it back saying it was working.

Of course it was not fixed, so I started having the same issues with the keys not working periodically. Again I called customer service and they had me resend it to them and told me they would replace the keyboard. I just got it back and for now it is working properly, so I am finally able to use it.

I do have a HP laptop that is about 3 years old that I only paid $300 for that I think has a better feel to it than this one, so I probably would not buy this brand again due to the fact that is does feel cheaply made and I'm afraid it won't last. For the price though it does what I need it to and it is nice to have an extra laptop for the family to use.

I really like my laptop. It just sucks that it arrived and only 1 of the speakers worked, they did give me a $20 credit for that. The computer did arrive quickly.

MSI Computer Corp. Notebook GT70 0NE-609US;9S7-176215-609 17.3-Inch Laptop

MSI Computer Corp. Notebook GT70 0NE-609US;9S7-176215-609 17.3-Inch LaptopPROS:

Great construction. The overall build quality is excellent. Is it too heavy? Not to me. This is not an ultrabook; nor is it supposed to be. The brushed aluminum is not only beautiful, but it's also essentially FINGERPRINT-PROOF! As is the palm rest

Trackpad is spacious, with nice accents

Speaker system is top notch, loud, distortion-free and even pleasantly bassy (due to the subwoofer)

SteelSeries keyboard is well-sized, has solid feedback and is above average in quality

Keyboard has nice backlighting which is fully customizable by using the onboard KLM software

Win8 is pre-loaded onto the spacious SSD, which makes OS functions and bootup lightning fast

Gold-plated audio jacks make it a breeze to connect this bad boy to external speaker systems

Fairly quiet to my ears

The backpack and headset bonus items are a combined value of just under $200, and are both high quality extras

Gaming performance is as good as it gets, as of this writing

The wireless module (Killer Wireless) comes with some pretty wicked software. According to some demonstrations on YouTube (which seem legit), it provides better and more consistent latency than competitors

NEUTRAL:

The display (which thanks to MSI's engineering, can be easily swapped out by the user if you prefer a different configuration) has a slight grainy texture to it when viewing solid colors under certain conditions. However, it's big, fairly bright, and glare-free

Left-side Windows key has been removed (there's still one on the right) in order to avoid accidents while gaming. Thus, if you used that key a lot, you won't have it (though you can always map out alternate shortcuts).

CONS:

Windows 8 UI blows for desktop users, but this is easily remedied by third-party software, and the OS is speedy and does have some improvements

Though it has 3 USB 3.0 ports, they're all on the left side (with 2 USB 2.0 on the right). No big deal though.

CONCLUSION:

This thing flies, is quality construction, and looks awesome. No, it isn't too big. It's the perfect size for its purpose. It feels very solid and appropriately weighted when carried (but again, I'm not after ultraportability; this is a desktop replacement). Feels good when used on my lap too. I had to use MSI customer service due to a minor issue, and they were extremely responsive and helpful, which is a good sign. I've not used the Alienware, Asus, or any other competitor, but honestly, I don't need to. My expectations were pretty high and this laptop exceeded them.

This is a beast of a machine. Runs smooth and quiet. Windows 8 tolerable but I'm not a fan, that would be my only complaint.

MSI GT70

ABOUT ME

This review is a comparison of MSI GT70-0NE (zero NE) 609US dragon edition vs Dell Alienware M18x-R2

I am a non-gamer. I am an adult. I am a casual laptop user. I do not do any cpu (central processing unit) intensive tasks like video editing. I simply surf the internet, watch dvds, watch Netflix, check email, and listen to music. My last computer was a 2002 Gateway desktop running Windows XP. I have no experience with Windows Vista or Windows 7 and it took a lot of effort and patience to learn Windows 8. I wanted the best laptop available by direct purchase from the manufacturer. I wanted a large screen desktop replacement laptop. I wanted to be hassle free in terms of trouble shooting and warranty service and thus I did not want a third party/middle man customized laptop dealer. I initially purchased the Alienware M18x-R2 with Windows 8 (released 10/26/2012) on 11/27/2012. It has an 18.4 inch diagonal glossy screen. The first M18x-R2 I received constantly gave me "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" errors. The case was also scratched. After weeks of telephone tech support, I opted for a full refund rather than switching out video cards and mother boards. I tried 3 more M18x-R2 laptops. However, these 3 all had a new problem. I ordered 16 GB (gigabytes) of RAM (random access memory) at 1866 MHz. Each was set to 1333 MHz out of the box. Tech support had me go into BIOS and change the DIMM profile from default to XMP profile 2. This did force the RAM to operate at 1866 MHz but the system still displayed it as 1333 MHz in Alien Autopsy and in the ePSA pre-boot assessment diagnostics. This issue persisted through 3 purchase and refund cycles. Dell Alienware was unable to ship me a laptop operating at 1866 MHz out of the box. Each time I had to change BIOS settings to achieve the performance I had purchased. Also, these 3 Alienware laptops all arrived with 5 to 10 dead pixels in each new build. The 4th M18x-R2 also kept failing a windows update for Intel Corporation Storage Controller and tech support wanted me to "hide" this update. It also had some keyboard backlighting glitches using Alienware FX. Another of my four iterations had a touch pad button that would get stuck in the down position and squeak when it was working. I was being very picky but this was an expensive laptop and I felt these technical issues were unacceptable. I decided to move on to a different manufacturer. Alienware has the largest screen at 18.4 inches. The next largest is 17.3 inches which is provided by many manufacturers. With all four M18x-R2s I purchased I chose the nebula red case. So, I decided to try the MSI GT70-0NE dragon edition as it is red also and offers excellent hardware.

CONSTRUCTION AND AESTHETICS

The M18x-R2 is sleek. It has a slot load optical drive which has a clean look. The GT70 has a tray load but does have a touch eject button above the keyboard in addition to a mechanical button on the tray in addition to a pinhole emergency release for a jammed dvd. MSI also offers blu ray burning capabilities and Alienware does not. Also, the optical drive in the MSI is much quieter and has less vibration than the M18x-R2. The M18x-R2 seemed to only have 3 construction materials. The palm rest was rubber, the screen was solid glass edge to edge, and the body was red aluminum. The GT70 is ugly. The palm rest is red aluminum with a laser etched dragon. The speaker grills are silver. The webcam is chrome. The keyboard is black, surrounded by a very scratchable high gloss fingerprint magnet plastic, surrounded by dull plastic. With the proper lighting, you will see the high gloss plastic scratches even with a microfiber cloth. The M18x-R2 palm rest did show oily spots from my palms. The M18x-R2 screen touched the keyboard keys when the lid was closed and oils from my fingers would leave an oily outline of the keys on the screen. The M18x-R2 had no writing on the laptop and was elegant. The GT70 is ugly and covered in writing and labels as follows: "mic" next to the microphone, "keyboard by steel series" on palm rest, "sound by dynaudio" on touch area, and "dragon edition" on touch area. The USB 3.0 ports on the M18x-R2 were black and seemed classy but they are blue on the GT70 and all other computers and look bad. The GT70 does taper to the palm rest and is very comfortable to type on. The M18x-R2 did not taper and was not very ergonomic to type on. The M18x-R2 had only the power port in the rear. The GT70 has many rear ports and keeps my desk less cluttered with wires. I wish the GT70 rear esata port was a USB combo port but it is not. My M18x-R2 did not have optimus technology for the video card and used the Nvidia card 100% of the time versus Intel onboard graphics and yet the cooling fan would occasionally turn off and when it did run, it was extremely quiet. The GT70 has optimus technology with the Nvidia 680m graphics card and yet the fan never turns off even though I am on Intel graphics 100% of the time. The fan is loud on the GT70. It is right below the point of being unacceptably loud. The M18x-R2 only had one sticker for Windows 8 on the palm rest. It looked really slick. The GT70 has 3 stickers for Intel, geforce, and THX on the palm rest and looks ugly. The windows 8 sticker is inside the battery compartment. I removed the 3 palm rest stickers by simply peeling them off and using scotch tape to take off residual adhesive. Alienware did feel more solid, metal, and glass although the keyboard did have flex. MSI feels a little more plastic but the keyboard has no flex. While Apple Computer Products are beautiful, sophisticated, organic, and elegant looking, the GT70 is really ugly. There are a lot of seams between build materials, plastics, the keyboard, etc. Dust gets stuck in these seams.

OTHER COMPLAINTS

The Dell Alienware Windows 8 OS (operating system) was very clean and stripped down. The MSI Windows 8 OS contains the following bloatware: adera, mahjong, freshpaint, puzzletouch, solitaire, taptiles, wordament, tu, games, pinball fx, evernote, music maker jam, movie maker, Korea media player center, Korea messenger center, taptiles, windows live mail, cookbook, and photo gallery. None of these were on the M18x-R2. I even tried a "remove everything and reinstall windows" but it still contained all these embedded extras. I ran MSI burn recovery to create a backup dvd. It insists on burning 6 dvds. It does not recognize dual layer dvds. It wouldn't let me burn from the c: drive. I could only burn from the d: drive. The Alienware Alien Autopsy recovery discs only needed 2 dual layer DVDs. The M18x-R2 function control panel was toggle push button but it was backlit 100% of the time so it could be used in the dark. The GT70 function control panel is touch but it is not backlit and cannot be seen in a dark environment. Keyboard backlighting and Alienware FX is excellent and highly customizable on alienware. MSI only offers 3 lighting zones with no speaker grill or touchpad backlighting. The alienware speakers were much louder with and without headphones. MSI has a much lower speaker volume especially with headphones. This must be due to THX or dynaudio software. Occasionally, the laptop speakers randomly crackle with distortion for less than one second even though external speakers or headphones are plugged in. The MSI touchpad has a learning curve due to a raised plastic ridge between the touchpad and the buttons and I constantly press on the ridge and then have to drag my finger lower to the button. The ridge makes me think it is the button. The alienware touchpad was much more intuitive. Cyberlink Power DVD 10 has some screen bleed at the bottom of the screen in cinema mode. The alienware does not. There was an issue with cyberlink playing audio cds and movie dvds but this has been resolved by a patch available from MSI downloads. The error would say "The integrity of CyberLink PowerDVD is at risk." The audio jacks on MSI are not intuitive. The labeling is simply molded and recessed into the plastic and I cannot see them in a lit room let alone a dark room. Alienware audio jacks were very intuitive. The GT70 headphone jack does not automatically turn off the laptop speakers. The alienware keyboard was intuitive and matched a desktop and number pad. The MSI keyboard is cramped with the right shift key, arrow keys, and number pad requiring a learning curve. The +/keys on the right of the steel series keyboard number pad do not seem to have any function on this laptop version even though they seem to have keyboard brightness control icons. The power button is a non-customizable bright white and blinks in sleep mode. It is annoying and distracting. In Alienware the sleep mode caused the power button to slowly pulse in a soothing respiration type of blinking or pulsing. The GT70 sleep mode causes the power button to blink in a harsh and jarring rapid blinking or flashing. It is disconcerting and looks more like an error or warning rather than sleeping. The mechanical hard drive in the GT70 does occasionally make a clicking noise about once an hour or less. The M18x-R2 could be set so closing the lid switched to an external monitor and opening the laptop lid turned off the external monitor. The GT70 does not offer this convenience. The GT70 must be manually switched from laptop screen to external monitor. Also, the Alienware touchpad could be permanently disabled when a mouse was plugged in. The MSI touchpad re-activates with every power cycle even though a mouse is attached. The GT70 has indicator lights below the touchpad on the front edge of the laptop and they are annoying and distracting. These lights and the touch button control panel are plain old amber and not as classy as the M18x-R2 lighting. Again, similar to the audio jacks, the lights below the touchpad are labeled by being molded into the plastic and recessed. I cannot see them in a lit room or a dark room. The tip of the laser etched dragon tail on my palm rest has a small gap in it. The headphones, backpack, and dog tags included in this purchase are for children. The backpack is way too large and heavy duty to be convenient or functional. The webcam is less megapixels and more grainy than the M18x-R2. I prefer the MSI anti-glare screen over the M18x-R2 glossy screen. I wish MSI would offer Windows 8 Pro with Media Center so I could play movies in Windows Media Center. I know I can upgrade but I would prefer if MSI offered this configuration standard. Dell offers Absolute Software lojack embedded in the BIOS. MSI does not offer lojack. Alienware had indicator lights for number lock, caps lock, and scroll lock. MSI has indicator lights for number lock and caps lock only. A new laptop can be so much fun. The "user experience" can be really fun. Apple seems very playful and fun with the unboxing experience and initial boot up. Calling tech support is always annoying. Many people buy laptops and never have to call tech support for years. I had to call tech support for each of my Alienware laptops multiple times. This involved navigating touchtone and voice menu options, long hold times on the phone, call backs, emails, etc. I have not called tech support for MSI once yet. This alone is a big plus. I have enjoyed my consumer experience with MSI. Also, Alienware had a pair of quick one touch volume control buttons on the control panel. MSI requires two hands for volume controls. Your left hand has to press and hold the "Function" button and your right hand has to press either volume up or volume down. Sometimes the volume is set too loud and a user would like to quickly lower the volume with a one handed jump from the touchpad or mouse. YouTube gives me random problems with this laptop. When I watch YouTube videos, the menu bar and video progress bar at the bottom of the video change appearance, configuration, disappears, or is only partially visible. It changes week to week or sometimes video to video. This could be due to YouTube, flash player, Internet Explorer, Windows 8, or the GT70. There is a white sticker covering a seam in the bottom panel of the laptop stating the warranty is void if the sticker is broken or removed. I would like to open the bottom panel and just look inside or blow out dust. Alienware allows users to open the bottom panel. I have heard speculation GT70 users are allowed to break this sticker but so far I have not researched this. The sticker is annoying.

TAIWAN COMPANY AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE

A lot of the user's guides, printed materials, MSI website, and MSI instructional YouTube videos have very bad grammar and spelling. It makes me lose confidence in the product. Alienware and Dell are also based in China but they translate their materials very well.

POSSIBLE WINDOWS 8 COMPLAINTS

The task bar clock cannot be forced to synchronize with internet time. A really minor gripe is the hourglass circle thing jumps to the left of the screen when initially configuring windows. Windows 8 took away the "internet explorer no add ons" feature. Windows 8 took away the "notify me of windows update" option. For awhile I was getting a little black box in the bottom right corner of internet explorer status bar. I turned on the status bar and the zoom information would randomly be black. This issue seems to have resolved itself however. Windows 8 is flawed in that when I run the Windows Experience Index it cannot register or report my graphics card as 680m due to the optimus technology and Intel graphics. My WEI is 7.1 on Windows 8 which grades on a scale of 1.0 to 9.9. I tried to run Windows Memory Diagnostics but it freezes. It runs fine until it hits 21% on pass 1 of 2 and 10% overall. This is a known issue. I hope it is due to the newness of Windows 8 and will be resolved eventually. I decided to download Mem test 86 as a work around for this glitch. It was difficult for me to achieve this. I had to change the BIOS setting UEFI to legacy and boot from USB because I downloaded Mem test 86 to a USB memory stick. Again, I was unable to burn mem test 86 from the c: drive, I could only create an optical disc from the d: drive. Which is why I ended up putting it on a USB stick. My laptop did pass mem test 86. I would love Windows 8 if I could play solitaire and minesweeper while on the desktop screen. This is possible but the games are confined to either the right or left one third or two thirds of your screen. I preferred Windows XP games in normal windows dialogue box type floating re-sizable windows. In XP I could watch YouTube videos and play minesweeper and really control my screen space to my personal liking and move the minesweeper game all around the screen. This is not possible in Windows 8. Another negative in Windows 8 is searching. In XP, my search string or file tree would remain as I double clicked different files looking for whatever I was searching for. In Windows 8, once I double click on a file, it jumps to that file sometimes on desktop or the start screen. When I decide this is not what I was searching for, I have to begin my search all over again. Sometimes, I can't remember how I got to that previous screen. I had it narrowed down to maybe 3 files and I wanted to do a process of elimination but now I must start over. All the Windows 8 "apps" are lame. The normal desktop versions are always preferable with much more functionality. Thus, all the "apps" are frustrating, constrictive, and lacking in functionality. All the apps seem like a waste of time. I suppose children live inside their cell phones and are more willing to tolerate lack of functionality on a desktop. Older generations were baptized on desktops and are frustrated by "apps" and cell phones. The Windows 8 hot corners and charms bar can be annoying. Especially, the upper right corner where minimize, maximize, and close are located. My cursor often activates the charms bar which then blocks the close button and I have to drag the cursor left to auto hide the charms bar and then approach the close button more cautiously. This also happens in the bottom left corner when trying to open internet explorer but the start screen box appears. Also, the task bar icon tray cannot be customized in regards to Microsoft one note and other icons. My M18x-R2 seemed like a more solid Windows 8 OS than this MSI. MSI is occasionally glitchy in internet explorer especially. It will be blank or encounter errors and close or recover the page. When I delete Internet Explorer browsing history, a yellow message box pops up at the bottom of the screen stating Internet Explorer has completed deleting the browsing history. This box only pops up sporadically. Maybe I'm not waiting long enough for the box to pop up. Alienware offered McAfee anti-virus which was constrictive with some web sites. MSI uses Norton which seems a little looser with websites or at least doesn't scare me with it's little warnings or choices in a weird "choose your own adventure" kind of way. While McAfee seemed less intrusive overall, it was more picky with some websites. Norton seems more like a many tentacled monster reaching into every corner of my laptop and yet hasn't blocked me as much as McAfee in alienware.

TECH SUPPORT

I am much more confident in Dells tech support, refund policies, hours of operation, warranty service, etc. MSI laptops must be purchased through retailers like Amazon and the refund policy is a little more vague. Alienware can be purchased directly from Dell.

Windows 8 boots very fast. I can be in my email within 35 seconds of pressing the power button. MSI super raid is pretty awesome. I guess it uses mSATA memory as the hard drive which is similar to current ssd (solid state drive) hard drives. It uses PCIe (PCI express) ports adapted to sata 3. SSD in RAID 0 configuration is fast but is vulnerable to unrecoverable hard drive crashes. However, Windows 8 offers file history which saves music, photos, documents, and more to the 750 GB mechanical rotating platter hard drive in this MSI configuration which is set as the d: drive. Not only does the d: drive offer a backup of data but mechanical hard drives in non-RAID can offer some data recovery in the event they crash. This d: drive uses sata 2 so it maxes out at 3 GB/s data transfer. Also, Norton 360 offers a backup program as well. I love the sata 3 (6 GB/s) hard drive port. I love the Intel I7 ivy bridge cpu. This laptop is very cool to the touch. However, I am on Intel graphics 100% of the time. The fan vents occasionally get hot. The M18x-R2 upper left surface, sides, and rear were very warm and hot. The Alienware laptop was much hotter than this MSI.

MY PURCHASE

I purchased the MSI GT70-0NE from Amazon. I purchased the 4 year square trade warranty from amazon for $400. I also purchased the MSI extended warranty which must be purchased from MSI within 30 days of laptop purchase. I installed Norton 360 on my laptop. MSI includes a trial version of Norton internet security with this laptop. I use external speakers and a mouse. I installed all the MSI downloads for this laptop. I purchased Microsoft Office 2013 non-subscription version.

CONCLUSION

I feel the GT70-0NE and the M18x-R2 are both equal. Each has its pros and cons. I especially prefer the tapered slope of the GT70 palm rest but I prefer the 18.4 inch alienware screen. Although, I did not like the glossy alienware screen. I prefer slot load optical drive but if I ever get a jammed dvd I will be happy with my current tray load. The 680m graphics card is wasted on me but I like the red aluminum color of this laptop case. I wish the headphones, backpack, and dog tags were optional and this might have saved me money because I would not have purchased them. I preferred the alienware touchpad. There are additional differences between the two laptops but they should be fairly obvious with a little research. Sadly, Dell simply could not ship me a working laptop after 4 tries. MSI succeeded where Dell failed. I have been using this MSI laptop for 6 weeks. I have had this laptop from March 29th, 2013 to May 10th, 2013 as of this review. I worked with Alienware from November 2012 to March 2013. This MSI laptop has been fully functional from a hardware point of view. I have had a lot of software glitches as mentioned above but I am understanding with regards to Windows 8 having only been released for 7 months and still working through its growing pains. I also preferred Alienware's customizable build options. I gave this laptop 5 stars because it is the most powerful laptop available directly from a manufacturer with amazon as the retailer. Alienware can be purchased by skipping the middle man retailer but Alienware simply could not ship me my order even after 4 attempts. I wanted a stock configuration laptop. I did not want to use a third party custom build retailer. I did not want to complicate the trouble shooting warranty process with a modified build. MSI offers cutting edge, leading edge, bleeding edge hardware and software. I wanted to avoid high gloss finger print magnets. I wanted a desktop replacement laptop. I wanted a red or non-black electronics item. Thus, the 5 star review. Well, I hope this review was helpful and I hope your computer brings you and the world much happiness! Peace!

Within moments the OS loads right up. Classmates, co-workers, & family members are very jealous. The backpack and headset are a nice welcomed bonus. Installed with MS office but requires a purchase. Quickly removed Norton and installed a different anti-virus application. Remember to change directories if you are installing or downloading something unless you do want it to sit on the SSD.

If you can fork over the cash it is a great investment.

It looks great, works great, boots fast, runs games without a problem. Obviously a bigger battery would be better, windows 8 tiles is a pain. The right side shift key is too small. Makes it highly irritating while typing.

The SSD drives also enhance performance and the speakers are awesome.

Cons:

Windows 8 tiles launch as soon as you scroll to right.

Right shift key is too small.

Felt a little underpowered for my needs.

Lenovo G570 4334EEU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Lenovo G570 4334EEU 15.6-Inch LaptopLenovo has a serious problem with the hinges on these laptops breaking because the screws fall out of the bottom. They will charge you to fix it and you must pay for shipping, then you will wait at least 30 days for parts from china! Just google Lenovo G570 hinge problem and you can read all the horror stories. They only cover hinges under warranty for 90 days on these lesser expensive laptops. Need to stick with HP, Asus, or Gateway for real warranty service. Sad times for Lenovo.

I recently purchased this Lenovo to replace my old Dell desktop, and I have not regretted my decision. It's a great mid-level laptop that accomplishes as much and more then I wanted.

I bought this laptop as a present for my step-dad as he was getting a new job in Australia and he had to leave his desktop behind. This computer is a great desktop replacement if you don't plan on playing games or any graphic intensive work. It, like all laptops now adays come with at least 10gb of bloatware which is just a bummer. I uninstalled all of that 'crap' but I left the boot manager on there to see if it would have any improvement. Before I upgraded the 500gb HDD into an SSD I was geting around 100 second boot up times and they were quite constant. After upgrading the RAM to 8gb that dropped to about 90 seconds on average boot up time. But with the SSD I now have an average of 20 seconds and less that 15 seconds shut down time. This computer, with the SSD upgrade Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT128M4SSD2 makes the perfect computer for someone with low patience, need for speed, doesn't play games and it streams videos crystal clear in its HD (not full HD, but 768p none the less) screen. It is a good laptop and for $700, which includes the upgrades, its a deal that shouldn't be missed

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S400 14.4" Ultrabook (3rd generation Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz, 6GB DDR3,

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S400 14.4' UltrabookI really like this ultrabook

what I like

1sound is amazing

2screen is very bright and vivid colors (contarary to the previous comment, you can actually adjust it)

3battery lasts 6 hours on ECO

4boots up very fast. It takes me about 18 seconds to open up the internet browser

5windows 7. I upgraded to Windows 8 after I boughtit but I could only endure it for 10 or so days. Thanks to Toshiba, they save an image of factory settings on this computer, I could just roll it back with couple button pushes

6looks very nice

7you can charge things when the computer is off, you can even use the speakers to play music from external players when the computer is off

8I like the extra wide screen, you can have couple windows open while working and things are still workable.

9backlit keyboard

10wifi connection to an external screen

11very thin

What I did not like

1-Keyboard felt a little weird in the beginning but I got used to it.

2all ports are on sides, wish had some in the back like hdmi, it would look better when you attached a second monitor, but you can get around with wifi connection to a secreen if you buy the modem you need for this which is not expensive but you are still exposed to waves

3battery is internal and I do not know how easy to replace it

4max supported memory is 10 gb. Wish it was 16 gb

53 usb ports, 1 hdmi. wish it had 5 total

Overall, you are getting a very nice ultrabook for less than 500. I paid less than 500. You cannot beat it. I highly recommend this ultrabook.

1. Works on an airplane due to low height of screen

2. Starts up quickly

3. Spreadsheets look great on the wide screen

4. Lots of real estate on the screen.

Cons

1. Not the most vivid colors on this display.

2. This is not Windows 8.

3. Not a touch screen.

Toshiba Satellite L635-S3100 13.3-Inch LED Laptop (Grey)

Toshiba Satellite L635-S3100 13.3-Inch LED LaptopI bought this laptop last week and sent it right back. It's small enough, but quite bulky for a 13" laptop. The description on the Amazon page said it was less than 5", but that's really not the case. It's battery life was also quite short--just a little over 3 hours using eco-mode. It isn't that light either. I have a 16" Toshiba and the difference between the two in terms of weight seemed so minimal. Also, the back part of the laptop, where the battery is inserted is very noticeably bigger ('fatter') than the front. I was looking for a really lightweight one that I could bring around with me. The good thing about this Toshiba model of course is that it's got an optical (DVD) drive, the others from ACER and HP at this size don't. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to get an ACER 13" as I need a lightweight machine that's got 4-5 hours at least of juice. Toshiba's are generally of good quality, but this 13" one was just not for me. (I also wish Toshiba's would start making slim laptops again like the ones I had a couple years ago. Their new models tend to be on the 'fat' side. Decent price though--as I got the one (last week) for only $ 498. Sent it back to Amazon via UPS.

Speed is great, lots of storage space...smaller than my old dell, but not too small like my netbook. The design looks awesome too, although I'm not too fond of gloss...however I'm able to get passed that so I just love it! Would recommend it to students and those who need a laptop at home

After to have had a Toshiba Satellite from the 2005, I thought that I went to have the same experience when I bought another new one, but was not thus, from the beginning frisaba and after months in center of repair of Toshiba in my country, she hoped that she followed well, and after 5 months she returned to give problems me, at the moment is 2 monts old in repair center again. I believe that I will not risk to buy another Toshiba in my life.

Fiasco!!! Fiasco!!!

My review title says it all the hard drive failed 9 months after purchase, and it was outside the warranty window for a hard drive replacement. It took $200 to repair it (I had it done at an authorized Toshiba repair shop, so could have done it for about half if I did it on my own). Considering this was a ~$500 computer, paying another $200 nine months later just to keep it running is unacceptable.

DELL INSPIRON 6000 LAPTOP 80GB HARD DRIVE 1.0GB OF RAM DVD/CDRW WIRELESS XP

DELL INSPIRON 6000 LAPTOP 80GB HARD DRIVE 1.0GB OF RAM DVD/CDRW WIRELESS XPI bought one of these back in December of 2005, and it is still going strong! It's a super-durable laptop, and still has some great features considering its age, including (at least for the model I purchased) a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen. I've since upgraded it (2 GB memory, 320 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Ultimate) and handed it off to a friend, who thinks it's great. It's still a very good laptop; had I not had a friend interested in it, I would probably still be using it to this day. After having two Dell laptops over the last seven years, I am convinced that a Dell (and possibly laptops from other brands) will last a long time as long as it is properly cared for. Keep the inside of your computer clean and replace parts that go bad when necessary, handle it with care (don't drop it! Or at least, try not to), use it on cool and well-ventilated surfaces, run a defragmenter along with disk/registry cleanup utilities (i.e., Ccleaner) on a regular basis, have a good antivirus program (for example, Avast! Antivirus) and run a full system scan every now and then, run the OS and programs from a separate partition (store OS and program files on C:, keep personal files such as documents, photos, etc., on D:), tweak the operating system for maximum performance, keep software up-to-date, avoid using sleep/hibernate, keep files orderly, don't run too many programs at once, and your computer will last a long time and be blazing fast, even at seven years old. My old Dell could probably outperform some of the new Dell computers that come loaded with bloatware; I'm convinced that bloaty software is how computer manufacturers are able to perpetuate their computer sales. Within two years, the combination of new software releases, pre-loaded bloatware, and neglect in general either fries a laptop or slows it down to the point that people think their computer has become obsolete, so they go buy a new one. We're all being had by computer companies that want us to think we need a new computer every two years, when in fact if we were to maintain them, even a ten year old computer would probably meet the computing requirements of most. All right, enough ranting.

Love this laptop! got it right when they said i would, opened it up and turned it on, connects to wifi immediately... perfect laptop for college students or high school students for papers and such... not alot of memory, but i have an external hard drive for that.... highly recommended!

I purchased my Dell for $286 in Jan 2012. I was having problems in July so I took it to the Geek Squad. The testing showed the computer needs a new hard drive. Since the computer is more then 5 years old I had to look around for a PATA drive. I ended up getting a new hard drive and the recovery disks from Dell. I didn't even think about requesting the recovery disks when I purchased the computer. Also to register the computer in my name I have to provide Dell with purchase information. So far this has cost me $169. not including the cost to the Geek Squad.

My daughter and I bought my grandson a computer in July through Amazon. It immediately started having problems. The Geeks advised us to return it to the seller if we can.

I guess my luck isn't very good with computers.

Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)

Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch LaptopIn March 2008, I decided it was time to upgrade from a G4-based laptop to one of the new Intel models. I deliberated back and forth whether the lower priced MacBook would be sufficient or whether to pay the premium for the "Pro" model. Ultimately, I decided upon the MacBook Pro for these reasons.

Construction quality

The aluminum case of the MacBook Pro reminds me of a product made by the Swiss. The build quality is outstanding for a mass-produced device. It feels very substantial, and all the pieces fit together nearly seamlessly. The MacBook's case, however, is made from a high-grade plastic rather than metal. It's nice ... but I found the front edge of the MacBook's case a bit sharp on my wrists as I typed.

Ports

Compared with the MacBook, the MacBook Pro provides an additional USB port plus Firewire 800. The latter is desirable for people who work with video and external drives that have Firewire 800 connectors. The ExpressCard slot is useful for future expansion and services such as wireless broadband (EVDO).

Keyboard

Keyboard experiences are subjective; but I find the keyboard on the MacBook Pro the most comfortable of any laptop I've ever used. It feels solid and responsive. Plus, its backlighting is helpful when typing in dark environments.

Dedicated video

Unlike the MacBook that shares system memory for video (integrated graphics), the MacBook Pro has a dedicated video processor. This is beneficial for driving large external displays and running graphics-intensive applications.

Is the MacBook Pro worth the $700 price differential over a MacBook? That depends on whether you are a general home computer user (i.e., e-mail, web browsing, iTunes, word processing) or someone who uses their laptop for more advanced purposes. My user profile is more in the second category. Also, since I intend to keep this computer for three years, I figure that the premium breaks down to about $233 each year. This seems reasonable to me for something I use every day.

In view of the additional quality and benefits that the MacBook Pro offers, I think its higher price brings with it commensurate value. It's hard to imagine even finicky laptop users being disappointed with the MacBook Pro.

P.S. -There are two 15-inch MacBook Pro models. I bought the 2.4 gHz "entry level" model. It is the better value. I do not feel the 2.5 gHz MacBook Pro is worth the extra $500.

Also, people who care to add system memory (beyond the stock 2 gigabytes supplied by Apple) ought to purchase it from a third-party vendor and install it themselves. It is a simple process.

Short and Quick Review

This model is worth the 500 difference between the entry level. The screen is beautiful, the new LED Displays are great, better color depth, more color, the laptop doesn't get as hot as previous versions. Everything works, it is very fast, and this laptop replaced 2 high end workstations + 2 high end laptops (A dell with workstation class graphics card, and 17 inch macbook pro). I can edit 1080p high def video in real time with no slow down, edit my 12mp raw files in real time with no slow down. I can play the latest games like Call of Duty 4 maxed out on windows vista at native resolution with no slow down online.

With the beefy 250gb HD, ability to upgrade to 4gb of ram, the 512 graphics card, and 6mb cache, this machine is a complete replacement for me, and revolutionizes my life, work style, and workflow.

It is worth buying, and definitely better than the 2k version, by leaps, read my longer review for more.

Longer Fuller Review.

The new macbook pros are fantastic! I had a 17 inch core 2 duo before, it was nice, but it didn't do everything I wanted or needed. I was forced to keep my mac pro, and my custom built windows PC for running the applications I need, and the ability to play games (I do some freelance game design, as well as photography and animation work)

I grew tired of having so many workstations, but what can you do when you need the power? Apples new macbook pro has answered my needs. I have wanted a laptop with a 512mb graphics card for years, it has never happened until now.

Previous to this laptop, my laptops have been "toys" the only close workstation I had was a dell that cost close to 3k, and would break your back to carry it (but it had a 512 workstation class graphics card!)

With this laptop, I have sold my other machines, it is all I need, or want. If it meets my needs and expectations, it should be able to meet yours easily.

The reason you buy this model, is because of the graphics card, and the increase in l2 cache on the processor. The 2k model has less cache than last years santa rosa model (3mb compared to last years 4mb) this model and the 17 inch has 6mb, as well as the 512mb graphics card, dual core processor, and the ability to use 4gb of ram.

After getting the laptop, I use bootcamp to repartition the harddrive (did not need to reinstall OS X, was able to do this on the fly to install windows) I split it up to give me 165gb for OS X, and the rest for windows.

I need to use specialized software that requires windows, and these programs also require very high end workstations. The life of someone in 3d is not easy. This workstation takes care of all my needs. I'm running the 32 bit version of vista ultimate (the 64 bit is horrible, do not run it) I use windows to run the programs I need (mainly zbrush, unreal engine, and 3ds max) I can and do have maya, and can use it on this partition as well as os x thanks to the dongle, but I cannot use my creative suite software on windows, because of adobes licensees. (though oddly enough, I can run Lightroom on both platforms)

On my OS X side, I run maya, photoshop, after effects, and final cut studio (with shake 4.1, yes I need 2 compositing programs) I have no problems running these programs on this system. I can render out quickly, everything is snappy. With the 8600 geforce (opposed to ATI) maya is very responsive, and I get very few render errors. Dynamics are able to be rendered on this machine, and I can run simulations with ease. Render times are quite quick, and this system is very responsive.

I do photo editing, and this machine is fast as well (I upgraded to 4gb of ram myself for 95 dollars) my camera is a nikon d300, which is 12mp, I use lightroom and photoshop extensively, and at the same time with no problems at all.

I also run maya and photoshop cs3 together all the time (with itunes in the background).

With leopard, I find using this machine even better. I can use spaces, and have maya on one screen, then I can swtich to another screen with photoshop to paint textures, or reference something, and go to another screen for safari or itunes.

The touchpad is cool. Even in windows, I can right click by using both fingers on the touch pad, and clicking with the bar, very smart apple! it works in OS X as well (but you have to enable it)

I bought the apple keyboard (not the wireless, as I need a full size keyboard) and that keyboard is fantastic, the best I have ever owned. I love it. I also bought the logitech g9 mouse to use as my mouse (I cannot stand Mighty Mouse) this mouse is perfect, and similar price. With the wired keyboard you get use ports on the side, so you can attach the mouse to the keyboard with no problems. And it saves on clutter.

For those who enjoy playing video games (I do help make them) you will be happy to know you can play the latest games on PC here with great ease. I can play call of duty 4, at native res of 1440x900 (on vista) with little to no slowdown. Same for Unreal 3 (and all games that use this engine). I can play Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 maxed out all the way, at the native screen res, with no problems at all. I can play crysis, and bioschock (not maxed out, but pretty close).

I have not been so excited about a laptop in ages. I had the original powerbook and used it all over, but it was slow, it was something to use when on the road, and at school. When the first macbook pro came out, I was all over it, the software was buggy, it only allowed 2gb of ram, and it was not practical as my only system, nor was it applicable for heavy use by me. I got the 17 inch when the core 2 duo's came out, it was great, very snappy, and with the 256 card it was close to everything I need (but only 3gb of ram) I skipped the santa rose, as It did not really address anything. This model addresses everything. With 4gb of ram, 2 cores, 6mb of l2 cache, and a 512mb graphics card, there is nothing I cant do.

I edit HD video (1920x1080p) in final cut with no problems. I composite this video in shake with 3d made in maya with NO PROBLEMS. I play high end PC games maxed out with no problems! (Call of Duty 4 is a hard game to run, this runs it and I can play it maxed at native res, online, with no slowdown at all).

I work on my raw images from my nikon with no problems at all. This machine is just perfect. Everything works the way it should, and the way it needs to.

The only complaint I have is they did not include remotes in this revision. You can still access Front Row by using Command ESC and use that to view videos (which look very good on my HDTV).

I should also note, if you buy another keyboard (such as the apple external which I highly recommend (the wired, not wireless) You need to go into system preferences and turn off the optiion for F Keys, as this keyboad has an FN button, like the one on the laptop, and renders using your f keys impossible without pressing fn, turning on that option, makes your keyboard normal, and you can use fn to adjust the volume of your laptop.

Right now I have this laptop hooked up to my HDTV using the supplied DVI to VGA cable, and a line out form the laptop. I have sound on my tv (which I could pipe to a sound system if needed, or (what I do) have it piped to my wireless head phones). This laptop is where it is at.

Please, do not think the 500 dollars for this model over the other is not worth it, as it is very much worth it. The difference between this model, and the 2k model is night and day for me. It goes from a toy, I can use when on the plane, to my only computer! And that is HUGE if you are anything like me.

Now the difference between this and the 17 inch does matter. If you get the 17 inch, you will likly not be playing the latest games at native resolution, and I plan on using this hooked up to my TV, so I do not need 2 extra inches. If you will only be using the laptop, and have no plans on games, the 17 inch may be better for you. After reading many reviews, the 15 inch has better response times, and everything is slightly snappier than the 17 inch, which is why I went with the 15. There is not much a difference in size between the 2, the 17 is not much bigger than the 15, but for me, you could not get me to part with my 15 inch for anything.

This laptop is perfect, get it, and enjoy it. The design will likely change by the next revision (rumored in june / july) this could be the last time you can get such a beautiful laptop, that works perfectly, and is everything you can want.

5 out of 5, no problems at all.

Buy Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop (OLD VERSION) Now

As my second Apple purchase (first being an IPOD Touch 16GB) I am quite upset. This is my first Macbook and I am Impressed with several things. Performance, Build, Style, Sound, Touch pad responsiveness and Overall quality get perfect 10's in my book. However, the reason for the 2 star rating was the quality of the display.

Do a little researching on YELLOWING and you will know what I'm talking about. The first MBP I received from amazon had about 2 inches of yellow (stained) pixels at the bottom of the screen. I brought it to the apple store and the guy noticed it and offered a replacement, warning me that if I take the replacement I am risking getting a worse display. He opened a brand new box for me and the display had no yellowing but had BRIGHT SPOTS all over the place. This affected more of the middle of the screen so I went back a second time for my third replacement. This MBP has also disappointed me because it also has YELLOWING on about the bottom third of the screen.

Still, I am debating of going back to the Apple store to replace or just simply return this laptop and go with something else. Keep in mind I have owned this for 7 days total. This is a very valid issue and for a $2000 plus investment it is something to consider.

This is a known problem since the SR MBP's and I thought they would have fixed it in quality control but no. I will give Apple credit for great quality service, but they should really spend more money on quality control!

I have the Macbook Pro 15.4" 2.4GHz 200GB.

The displays affected were the 9C81, 9C81 and 9C83... two had yellowing, one had uneven bright/dark spots.

I am looking at this machine and thinking hard, but just can not find anything negative. OK may be it might be more convenient if it accept usual headset microphones in the inline plug or display can be opened a little bit further. You see after a week of heavy use, these are the only things I can think of.

It is cool, it is fast, and it is silent (I am very picky about fan noises). Multi-touch trackpad (amazing two finger scrolling), backlit keyboard, LED backlit gorgeous display (best blacks I've ever seen in any computer monitor), great audio output (with no hiss at all), mini iSight with superb image quality, all top quality. And of course the best operating system on the planet, you can't get anything better even if you are a billionaire (think about it).

PS: I have the 15.4 inch, 2.4 GHz CPU, 200 GB 7200 RPM HDD, 4 GB RAM model.

There was no reason for me to switch to a Mac product. I've always have been intrigued, but XP was doing it for me day in and out. My current Dell Latitude was on its way out and I wanted something high quality. I couldn't find anything that comes close in build quality/finish to the Macbook Pro. Asus makes some nice notebooks but I didn't want Vista, with all of its assorted issues and XP doesn't seem like a sound choice given its looming end of life.

So now I have my Macbook Pro. As a software developer I was drawn to the idea of a UNIX shell as a first class citizen (sorry Cygwin). The toughest part is learning the keys. In XP I could move around an IDE effortlessly, with keys: home,end,ctrl-arrow etc.; not so on the Mac keyboard. This proved the most frustrating. The lack of the forward delete is also a disappointment but I hear there are keyboard mapping solutions.

I installed VMware Fusion and XP for initial comfort and to ease the transition off windows. BTW, Fusion is amazing. It feels like it's native, and it's definitely faster than XP on my current Dell. With Fusion, I can map drives, cut and paste and access servers between the two -it's all very fluid. Full screen your Fusion in a different Expose window and you can quickly swap back and forth between Mac and XP.

Now the downside. In the first few days I experienced no less than 4 crashes, where it had to be power cycled. I haven't had any issues since, so I'm going to conveniently forget. Firefox crashes still, but no more than it did on windows, and maybe less.

So in conclusion, Mac was the right choice for me. High quality in and out and at a decent price. The interface is pure eye candy and orders of magnitude superior (usability-wise) than XP. While there will be some pain points in learning, it will hopefully be worth it. Get VMware Fusion and install Windows for when there is no Mac alternative.

*UPDATE* I have now had the macbook pro for 2 months. I'm really enjoying some of the UI features, such as expose and spaces more and more. The hotkeys are awesome (e.g. show desktop, lock/start screensaver).

There are however a few recurring problems that I have been experiencing. I'm going to detail the top two. The first issue is the screensaver hotkey stops working at times. This is a huge issue because it is also the mechanism for locking my computer, and I cannot leave my desk w/o locking it, so I must either close the lid (sleep) or restart, which fixes the issue.

Now for the second issue: often when I try and restart/shutdown, it does nothing, then a minute later tells me that Finder failed to quit and I should quit Finder then try again -great suggestion Apple, given that you CAN'T QUIT FINDER!! So now I have to hold the power button down for 10 seconds to kill it or run "sudo shutdown -r now" from Terminal.

So in my latest conclusion, my mac is not living up to my expectations of reliability. I was led to believe, by many in the mac community/stupid commercials, that Mac was the panacea from XP. The Mac user interface is *unmatched* and that along with the UNIX foundation were and still are my original reasons for choosing Mac. My previous XP Pro notebook however was significantly more stable. The reliability issues are getting more and more annoying and I just hope Apple is able to resolve and restore my faith in their product. Lastly, I would change the star rating to three but it won't seem to let me.

Toshiba Satellite C875D-S7330 17.3-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)

Toshiba Satellite C875D-S7330 17.3-Inch LaptopI did lots of research before purchasing a laptop. I settled on this one because it seemed to be the most bang for the buck. I have had no problems with it, and I've had it for about 3 months now. In fact, I do everything on it. I love it! The screen is huge. It's not super light, but that was to be expected. It has a great battery life, and I've had no problems with opening multiple webpages as one user said.

The reason this didn't get 5 stars from me is because of the keyboard. It seems really cheap and plasticky. In fact, I can actually see the entire keyboard moving up and down when I'm typing really fast. Doesn't hinder performance, just seems cheap. Other than that, this thing is fantastic! I do recommend it!

Oh, also, Windows 8 is amazing. I'm sure that people who don't like it are those same people who complain everytime Facebook makes a change to their timeline... people who don't like change. It has all the features Windows 7 has, just enhanced. Give it some time and you'll get used to it.

I bought this laptop to game and surf the web. Its very fast and I like that it is a bigger laptop. It comes with windows 8 which I kindav hate : \ but besides that I really like the laptop

Alienware M18x R2 BLACK 18.4" i7 3920XM 3.8GHz NVD SLI 680M 32GB 1024GB SSD RAID0 Killer 1202 Bluray

Alienware M18x R2 BLACK 18.4' i7 3920XM 3.8GHz NVD SLI 680M 32GB 1024GB SSD RAID0 Killer 1202 BlurayThis is for those who aren't afraid of commitment. If you want to see how us "2 percenters" have fun on a computer, this is it. Video card is more than awesome, the sound is of Bose quality, the speed and agility is reminiscent of a "Z06". Whether it's gaming or watching a Bluray favorite, this is how to get it done "American Style" (did you hear me Psy).

I doubt the previous reviewer actually is a 2%'er because of the "Z06" reference. If you are a 2%'er, you would mention some import: most likely a European model like a Porche, Audi, or Ferrari. If your idea of performance is a Chevy, chances are you are from the bottom 2%, not the top. That being said, this is most likely the mightiest laptop out there, but even if price is not an issue, I can't see the sense in this machine. The graphics cards are way overkill: only get this if you plan on docking this to a triple HD monitor setup when not on the go. One 680M could run three monitors on its own: why would someone want two for a single display? Do they need to heat up the room faster? Since its very heavy, chances are you won't want to take it many places either, in which case you can get the same hardware for half the cost with a desktop. If you need a large screen laptop that can run anything, a 670M is more than enough. The memory is also a waste, will you ever use that much? Most likely: no. If I was a 2%'er, I wouldn't want something that looks like a kids toy either. This thing reaks of "cheese" if you ever see it in person. There are plenty of laptops out there for much less (weight and money) that will run a 17" 1920*1080 display at full speed, and they don't look like a disco.
