Lenovo Ideapad Y560d 0646-2KU 15.6-Inch 3D Laptop (Black)

Lenovo Ideapad Y560d 0646-2KU 15.6-Inch 3D Laptopi like the 3d, as it's not 30 year old shutter glasses , just the polarized glasses like the movie theater uses, it's a shame that there is not alot more manufactures using this setup, as it works good, now i'm waiting for someone to get a TV out with the same set up, that don't cost a arm or leg. and i'm not talking about the old shutter glasses set ups.

as for the laptop it self, it runs alittle on the warm side, could use better cooling, but as long as you are not playing games on it, that push the gpu, or push the cpu tomuch it works fine.

This is one of the best laptop I ever had and I love it!!! I am an IT pro guy and so far have no Negative remarks about this laptop. Haha as a matter of fact I am writing this review from my new Y560d laptop and enjoying every bit of typing on it. It smooth and works like a charm. Super fast! and though I am not into computer games, I do a lot of developing and programming and have many Microsoft tools and applications installed on this, and they work like a charm! I hate people writing bad reviews and giving 1 star because the screen is shiny or because the ideapad logo has a light underneath it etc etc....blah blah stupid idiotic reviews! I would rate this product 5 stars, though it has only been 3 days I am using this product flawlessly, I am sure it will last long. I am a avid IBM/Thinkpad/Lenovo fan and this is my 1st Ideapad from Lenovo. Its smart and there is nothing not to like about it!

PROS: i7 Processor from Intel (Mindblowing), Excellent Keyboard and Touchpad (Works flawlessly), LED superb screen (I hate those idiots complaining about screen resolution is not enough, what do you need a microscope to view your laptop??? get real!). Amazing Graphics and ATI 1GB dedicated Graphics card makes it awesome! 4GB of RAM it came with and can be upgraded to max 8GB (more then enough, you don't need to run High end Mainframe computing here...) JBL Dolby Digital Home Theatre srround sound. Awesome in any laptops I have owned so far! Oh yes the beautiful design and a beautiful Tatoo on the front, makes the laptop look more sexy :) Above all, super quiet and no noise at all!!!

Well I have all praises and more positive things to write about this Y560d laptop and I cannot think of any negative thing.

Cons: None, NIL, Nada!

Ok yes this is a review from only 3 days using the laptop and if anything changes (I am positive it won't) I will update my review!

The computer is great. It has fast speeds on most games as long as it's plugged in, it's great for all of my school work, gaming, youtubing, etc. But it has huge problems. It overheats and crashes if it doesn't have a computer fan which can prove to be a huge problem. It crashes often, but if you take proper care of it it's still a good computer.

Acer Aspire AS8951G-9600 18.4" Notebook PC

Acer Aspire AS8951G-9600 18.4' Notebook PCI've had this massive screened beauty for 4-months now with not a single glitch! I replaced a 15" Dell XPS, and this larger screen size is very welcomed. Here are some observations:

1. Sheer size. This laptop is in the category of DTR (desk top replacement). In other words, this machine is large enough to feel like an acceptable replacement to a full blown desktop system. The beauty of a DTR is how much cleaner your desk will look with the laptop open or closed.

2. The screen is bright and beautiful. The glass covers nearly the entire lid and there is a 1/2" black framing under the glass on the sides and bottom. The framing is slightly larger on the top where the web-cam resides.

3. The lid operates solidly. It does not have a wobbly feel. The hinge is tight enough that when you open the laptop, you have to hold down the lower half of the machine as if you are prying the two halves apart.

4. The keyboard is full size and includes a ten-key number pad. The keys are what is called 'chicklett' style. The keys operate properly but I am still not used to the unique arrangement of some of the key. Especially annoying are the dedicated half-size directional arrow keys. I could turn off the NumLock and use those arrows, but I use numbers a lot. The back-lit keyboard is a first for me, and I like it a lot!

5. This machine does play (but not burn) BluRay. (Honestly, blank BD disks are still expensive. An external USB drive is a better method of data storage.) Also plays and burns DVD & CD. This optical drive is a tray loader. I prefer slot loading only because when I have the tray extended I always feel like I could accidentally break it.

6. The sound system is incredible! Six speakers including a sub-woofer. When watching a movie on this computer I'm about 3-feet from the screen, and the picture quality and great sound are in competition with my large screen HDTV and THX sound system. It's that good.

7. Of the 5 USB ports, one is USB 3.0 which allows my primary backup drive to do it's job in a fraction of the time compared to USB 2.0.

8. Because of the sheer size, I will not be hauling this around on a regular basis. I have a netbook that I carry to school. But I did want to have a case for this machine for those rare occasions. Again, because it's to big, finding a case took hours of searching! Here is the model I found that I purchased. Cut and paste this into Amazon's search bar: Everki Advance Laptop Bag Briefcase, Fits up to 18.4-Inch (EKB407NCH18). (I wrote a review on that case love it.)

9. The machine connects rapidly to wi-fi. There is an easy access dedicated button on the front left edge of the device that instantly brings up the wi-fi and bluetooth toggles.

10. The bottom line for me when selecting this machine was company reputation and price. The laptop has perfectly handled all the heavy processing digital media editing and processing software that I have installed. Not a single burp in four months.

I would feel comfortable recommending this machine to any friend or relative seeking a DTR. In the realm of 18"+ screens, the market is still narrow. You could go with another manufacturer and pay more. Just compare the specifications and make your own wise decision.

I have had this laptop for only a couple months and it is still under warranty. The battery life is nice but I have already sent it in twice to be fixed. The first time was because of a crashing issue and the second time was because a group of pixels in the screen died. Each time I had to pay for shipping and was without a computer for more than a week.

My real issue is that after getting the laptop back from the pixels issue, less than two days later more pixels died. I called ACER customer support and they told me that I would have to pay for the screen to be replaced this time even though the laptop was still under warranty. I find it unacceptable to be required to pay to replace something that they were just supposed to have fixed two days ago!

Pros: Excellent overall package.

Classy understated aesthetics, with a nice brushed aluminum finish.

Solid construction, very rigid for it's size. Seems slimmer and smaller than you'd think for an 18.4" screen.

Keyboard ergonomics are good, keys are well spaced and have a nice tactile feedback.

The removable touch-pad works well and is actually more than a novelty. It works in both normal and landscape orientation.

System stays cool and quiet during normal use, and only gets a bit louder and warmer when running games.

Speakers are surprisingly good, for a laptop mind you...

The Hard Drive is formatted as just one partition (Yay!).

Came pre-installed with Windows 7 Ultimate!? Not advertised as such, but thanks!

Has a minimum of "bloatware". Took me about an hour to get everything the way I like it.

Pretty much everything you could want in a "desktop replacement". An outstanding value for this role. There is nothing it can't do, truly a Jack of All Trades.

Cons: Just a little shy in the memory dept. 1333mhz, or at least the option to upgrade would have been nice.

The video card is not top-of-the-pile, but it is a nice mid-level card with good battery and thermal performance.

The hard drive really shoulda been a 7200RPM. This machine has some serious horsepower but it somewhat hamstrung by it's slowish (but spacious!) hard drive.

Other Thoughts: I have owned many laptops over the last 20 years, this is the best one yet. I use it for CAD, 3D Scanning, 3D Printing, Office Apps, Internet, Games, Videos, etc... While not the absolute best at any one of them, it excels at all of them.

I would have paid another $200 for a better Hard Drive and Video Card.

Acer didn't even bother to wire the 2nd hard drive bay.

It costs you $60+ for the cable and brackets and lots of research to make the laptop usable.

I will NEVER buy an Acer again.

After about 10 months, it quit turning back on after sleep. Now, it just randomly shuts off after being on for a while. Before that, I would have given it a 5 star rating.

HP Pavilion TX2500Z 12.1-Inch High-Definition Laptop

HP Pavilion TX2500Z 12.1-Inch High-Definition LaptopJust look on the web to see all the problems with this machine, issues with wireless failing, over heating and video card dying. Indeed it gets so hot you can burn yourself and do not set it down on paper or it may start a fire. Avoid this machine and possibly HP.

It pains me to write this as I have been a big HP fan but recently their laptops are disappointing.

The company that sold me this item lied about what the system had on it. When I called them they told me they would send me the part that I need for free and I STILL HAVE NOT RECIEVED IT. This have been two weeks ago.

Samsung RC512-S01 Core i7-2630M 2GHz 6GB 750GB DVD±RW NVIDIA Optimus 15.3" LED Notebook Windows 7

Samsung RC512-S01 Core i7-2630M 2GHz 6GB 750GB DVD±RW NVIDIA Optimus 15.3' LED Notebook Windows 7 Home Premium w/Webcam, 4G WiMAX & 6-CellI bought my laptop in late April or early May of 2011 on EBay (brandnew). As advertised, it boots up in seconds. The picture is crisp clear. The numeric keyboard is a plus. But from the very start I had problem with power button. Sometimes it would start and shut down within a second. As time passed it happened more frequently and then it would happen three times before I could get it started. I called and sent it to Samsung (they provided UPS label); they returned it stating it had been fixed. It was not. I sent it back again asking for a different laptop with similar specifications. They refused to replace it; but, they fixed it. Within a few months the problem reappeared. Of course, each time I had to move all the data to an external disc and remove all my passwords and reconfigure it upon return. I have a washer/dryer from Samsung and the dryer has the same problem. I am very disappointed. No more Samsung products for me.

Hadi,

McLean, VA

This laptop worked perfectly for the first year I had it. After that, it started having a host of problems. It is unable to run games that it used to run perfectly. It randomly restarts. It will freeze up on certain web pages, without fail, and have to be manually turned off and on. It keeps overheating. AND it keeps shocking me, which I know is not good for the computer! Tried to talk with Samsung, but ran into a major problem...there isn't a serial number on the laptop! Of course, customer service doesn't believe me and is treating me like I'm an idiot, but I can clearly see where the serial number is supposed to be and isn't. They have promised to call me back in 2-5 business days several times, and weeks later I still have not heard back from them...will not be buying a samsung product again.

Looking back on my purchase I do not regret it. It is a powerful laptop with all the necessities and has two hard drives that amount to about 700gb of storage capacity. The camera is decent and the ram plus the video card are very useful. I loved it and the only complaint I have is that it cost a little too muvh for what it delivered. That is not to say it doesn't deliver.

I have had multiple problems with this laptop. First it doesn't start up properly half the time and TWICE my touchpad has gone out and I have had to get it fixed. It looks great on the outside and the screen has wonderful picture but it does no good when the damn thing wont run properly. VERY disappointed. Will never buy a samsung again!

Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 215127U 15.6-Inch Laptop (Grey Metal)

Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 215127U 15.6-Inch LaptopI have had this laptop for about a week now and I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations.

I was unsure of purchasing a Lenovo product since I never have before but after reading countless gret reviews for their products and reliability I was convinced to buy one. Since receiving this laptop everything has worked flawlessly. The screen has very good colours and viewing angles, the touch pad and keyboard is great and what Lenovo is known for. The speakers are loud and clear. My favourite thing is how cool it stays on my lap with a quiet fan on the left.

I was about to buy a Sony laptop but read that a lot of their recent laptops have poor reliability which is my top concern with buying a computer. Lenovo was at the top of the recent laptop reliability study that I read and I can now see why.

The only thing I ca think of that isn't great is the microphone. Over skype they said I had an echo when I talked. Otherwise I highly recommend this laptop. For it's price range it can't be beat.

So I just received my Z580. After playing with it for a couple of hours let me say that I have zero regrets so far. I'm still tinkering with it. I was a little concerned about the integrated graphics card but in reality I'm not much of a PC gamer. I've viewed a couple of HD videos on YouTube and they render perfectly

I love that the bloatware is minimal to non-existent. First thing I did was delete McAfee Anti-Virus and installed AVG instead. The YouCam software is awesome. Also I'm pretty impressed with the Lenovo Boot Optimizer. My first boot took 67 seconds after running the app every other boot was between 43 & 49 seconds.

All in all I think this is a great bang for your buck. I highly recommend this product to any other consumers like me who are in the market for something that combines quality, performance & a great price. Also if I happen to stumble on to anything unpleasant in regards to this laptop I will be sure to update this review.

I have had this laptop for the last four months and have been using it for college. There are many things that I like about it and there are some things that bug me about the laptop but aren't too big of an issue.

Pros:

It's fast.

Cheap for what I got.

Haven't had any issues with software or things breaking.

I paid 600 dollars for this laptop, a mouse, and a case for the laptop.

Cons:

The touchpad is very sensitive and you need to be careful or you will barely press the touchpad and it will jump you to wherever the cursor is and you will start typing there.

When in sleep mode, whenever you wake it up it stays locked and you can't move the cursor for about seven seconds.

The battery life is truly 4 hours or sometimes less.

Update: The thing that I dislike the most is the touchpad buttons. Whenever I try to right click it will usually have the same function as a left click. The solution, get a mouse.

Some have complained about the keyboard but I disagree. The keyboard is a nice size, and the keys aren't poorly spaced. The only thing that I would change is somehow make the backspace button a little bit bigger.

I purchased this as a replacement for a Toshiba laptop I purchased a few weeks earlier that was too noisy for my liking. This was a huge improvement in the noise department, the laptop is fairly quiet in regular running mode, only when benchmarking it was the fan really noticeable. The other improvement was the touchpad's multi-touch scrolling, it was more accurate than other Laptop's, although I did have to disable the "pinch-to-zoom" feature as it was problematic when web-browsing. The downside was the processor wasn't quite as powerful as the laptop it replaced, but that was a mostly an unavoidable tradeoff to get something less noisy without a significant jump in price. The other drawback was size, the laptop case is just under 15" in length making it a bit bulkier than I would have liked as I would be carrying it with me quite a lot. Because of the size, I ended up going for the 14" Lenovo Z480 instead, it has all the same basic specs as the 580, but in a smaller case size. The Z480's other tradeoffs (aside from the screen size) were a smaller hard drive (500GB vs 750), smaller keyboard (no numpad), and a slightly louder running noise (maybe a decibel or 2 higher). I kind of regretted returning it, if the ~15" length isn't an issue for you this is a very good machine.

Pros:

* Low noise emission, includes Lenovo's "smart fan, noise control"

* Full size keyboard with numpad

* Separate mic and headphone jacks

* HD, 1.2 MP (1280*720) webcam

* 4 USB ports (2 usb 3.0 and 2 usb 2.0)

* Descent built in speakers

Cons:

* Size (near 15" in length, common for this screen size)

* Screen resolution (1366*768, common for this screen size/price range)

* WiFi/ethernet (works ok, but can take up to 2~3 minutes to make a connection)

Overall, not a bad laptop for the price.

I shopped around doing research online for a few weeks, for a sub-$500 laptop. I found the Z580 from an online store (they sold out quickly) for $445, but with 8G of RAM, same 3rd generation i5 and the rest the same as this one, except it came with Windows 8. When I found it, and then read and watched reviews, I ordered it immediately. In two weeks of looking, this stuck out as a great buy.

I've had computers since 1983, have studied programming, and consider myself an experienced user, but am not a programmer or geek. My last laptop was a SONY, and it was my favorite computer before this one. For me, this Lenovo is very well thought out. The gray brushed metal finish, which appears brown, looks great. I like the large ultra smooth touchpad, and that turning the "tap" feature off was easy to do by right clicking the touchpad icon in the taskbar. The LEDs are nice and dim, which is good at night.

I like the click and response of the keyboard, and that the delete key is a different shape, slightly bigger, and that controlling the sound volume and brightness is easy to do with the Fn key and arrow keys, and that the volume can also be adjusted with the LED lit sensor buttons above the keyboard. Incidentally the button on the right with the quarter moon is a fan clean dust button. In Windows 8, it will not adjust fan speed. The fan sound is quiet, but not perfectly silent like my SONY where I had to be about 2 inches away to even hear it.

It comes with a few somewhat useful little programs and not too much bloatware. My favorite software that it comes with, is the Dolby Home Theater v.4 with full equalizer. You access it through an icon in the taskbar (bottom right) and I have configured that so it shows on the taskbar, rather than being in the hidden section of taskbar icons.

At first I thought the speakers were not that great, but surprisingly, to watch a movie at night on them is like having a small home theater system for one, when you set the Dolby. The Dolby has to be turned on an off from an icon on the taskbar. The laptop speakers lack bass, but they are surprisingly clear, and much better than my previous SONY which required external speakers at all times. On the Dolby software, after you click on the Dolby icon and click the "on" button, it's the small button at the bottom middle to get to the equalizer and all the controls, including presets you can create yourself. The Dolby sound software will also come in handy if you have desktop speakers that don't come with a lot of controls, or just to use the terrific surround sound.

Most of the time, I use this laptop interfaced with a monitor, keyboard, old touchpad and speakers but I also use it as a laptop too. I like the 4 USB ports, and VGA and HDMI outputs. The Bluetooth, and WiDi are good to have even though I don't use them. WiDi allows wireless transmission to a TV with that receiver, or you can buy a receiver separately.

The screen is shiny and probably not the best for use outside or where glare is a problem.

The Windows 8 situation has little to do with the laptop, but I will mention that the worst thing about that at first was that when you make the least little left-to-right movement near the left side of the touchpad, it will take you back to the Metro/tiles and out of whatever you were doing. Do the swipe again, and you're back. I found the setting to turn that off in Windows.

When I plug this into my monitor, it sensed the monitor brand and resolution, which is something Vista wouldn't do.

I downloaded the classic shell to look like Windows 7, and may delete that later. I didn't want to deal with learning Windows 8 while setting it up. I'm glad I didn't get Windows 7 though, and the fast startup/shutdown times of Windows 8 are nice, and I keep discovering new, cool features about Windows 8.

Some people have complained about the jumpiness of the touchpad in that there are no left and right buttons but the entire pad dips down in the two bottom corners when depressed. It can cause your cursor to jump but hasn't been a problem for me. For me, turning off the tapping, and a few of the swipe features has it working well.

The battery life is only a few hours if playing a movie but twice as long if you're just using less power. The WiFi has automatic recognition, no switch. For me, the range is the same as my other laptop, about 50 feet. If you have trouble with the range, I'd suggest reconfiguring your wireless router with the laptop.

Before this worked really well, I had to do all the updates for Windows 8. I did other things too like transfer my browser profile -not just bookmarks but cookies, history, passwords and everything -which made switching to a new computer painless but was a surprisingly convoluted thing you have to do, to do that. The i5 is speedy and I like it a lot. It came with 8G of RAM which is the max, but it should last me another 6 years hopefully, maybe longer.

The Metro tiles and all that? I've played around with some of it. It's really more for touchscreen users, and if you know what you're doing, you can pretty much ignore it. I'm still exploring some of the things that might be useful about them.

Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D-A05US 15-Inch Premium Ultrabook (Silver)

Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D-A05US 15-Inch Premium UltrabookFor years I've been looking for a 15" PC laptop less than 1" thick, under 4 pounds, with an SD card reader, backlit keyboard, and matte metallic finish at a reasonable price. There have been several machines that came close the Vizio CT15 (no SD card reader or backlit keyboard), the Sony VAIO T Series (too heavy), the Dell Inspiron 15z (thick, heavy, plastic body), and of course previous iterations of the Samsung Series 9 (too expensive) but the NP900X4D-A05US is the only one I've found that met all my criteria. It was worth the wait.

External hardware: A+

This machine is beautiful. Any thinner and you'd be able to shave with it. The silver magnesium chassis is a major upgrade over the previous Ash Black versions since it doesn't show fingerprints or dust. Keyboard travel is surprisingly good, and not at all shallow as I had originally expected for being in such a thin frame. The keyboard backlight is subtle yet very effective and build quality is fantastic. I remember seeing a YouTube video of the NP900X3D not having the magnet that holds the lid closed, but that has been fixed in the NP900X4D. The Elan trackpad is smooth as butter with the newest driver installed...I've even read a few posts from people with the same trackpad on laptops from other manufacturers who install the Samsung drivers because they are so good. There are lots of gestures and settings that can be tweaked though, so if you're coming from a non-multitouch trackpad there may be a little learning curve.

Internal hardware: B+

For my needs (and the needs of most people not doing 3D rendering/MATLAB/etc.) the i5 Ivy Bridge processor/4GB RAM/128 GB SSD is way more than adequate...but there are several laptops on the market with those specs that are cheaper. In this case you're paying a premium for the design. Both the RAM and SSD are upgradeable though so once SSD prices come down, making upgrades should be fairly easy.

Software out of the box: D-

I won't go into this too much since I kept the factory state for about 5 minutes, but let's just say that you'll want to do a reformat and clean install of Windows 8 (see comments for how to do this.) The amount of bloatware is overwhelming, and out of the box you're only left with ~66GB of free space on a 128GB SSD. But I guess that's the case for just about every OEM Windows machine these days.

Software after reformat/clean install: A+

I remember when computers took almost two minutes to boot up. The NP900X4D does it in 4.08 seconds! By doing a clean install of Windows 8 and removing the recovery partitions, free space increases to ~100GB, and everything works much, much faster.

Bottom line: Internally, the NP900X4D-A05US is pretty average by current standards, but it is still blazing fast for everything but the most processor-intensive tasks. In terms of design, there is not a better looking machine on the market, period. The price seems to fluctuate frequently daily (I bought mine at $899.99) so if it's higher than that, I'd suggest keeping an eye on the page as it will probably come back down.

This is a great, sleek, lightweight, and powerful notebook.

Pros:

The matte screen helps reduce light reflections significantly.

The hard drive is ULTRA fast.

Boot time ranges between 10-15 Seconds.

Battery lasts, and lasts, and lasts, and lasts.....

The touchpad is very big.

The brightness is superb.

The keyboard is nicely spaced out.

Samsung includes some really useful "settings" software as one of the Function keys.

There are two USB 3.0 ports.

Did I mention how light it is? (I got so used to the weight of it, I almost dropped my friend's 13 inch MacBook Pro when I was handling it)

It is very quiet especially when the quiet option is checked off.

Cons:

There is A LOT of bloatware. (I suggest "refreshing" the Windows 8 and using the Samsung Software Update to ONLY install necessary DRIVERS and select software)

The hard drive of 128 GB comes with only ~95GB available. (They really tried to make this laptop dummy-proof and you can recover from practically any problem)

The seams of the two panels right below the screen are not flush and you can clearly see that they're not perfectly matched.

The laptop feels cheap (but then again, so light!) and easily breakable (I haven't tested that, nor do I plan on testing it; however, I can bend the keyboard portion a bit!).

The speakers-the two tiny speakers-are located on the bottom (if you hold it on your lap or on your bed, sound is muffled).

The camera just plain SUCKS.

OVERALL: I love this laptop! If you can get past the "plasticky" feel of it (and trust me, you will), and the horrible camera, everything else is fixable.

My advice: DO NOT INSTALL INTELLIMEMMORY!!!!!!!

This is a new piece of software that catches your programs and lets them roam around in the RAM. Even after force-closing all open programs, the computer was still using ~95% of the RAM and was INSANELY slow.

Would I buy it again? YES. Maybe in black this time, though.

Would I recommend it? YES.

Buy Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D-A05US 15-Inch Premium Ultrabook (Silver) Now

Design: Great design. It's eye catching, but if you're an avid iProduct hater, then you might resent it's uncanny resemblance to the Macbook line of products....no seriously. The fans being on the bottom is a HUGE take away (1 star). This automatically warrants the user needing a deskpad, laptop stand, or something to that effect when laying in bed.

Performance: OOB (out of box) performance and response is amazing. It's quick to turn on. Button clicks, program responses, they're all basically instantaneous.

Battery: Battery life is respectable. I've ran with this on max brightness and I got a solid 6 hours. Granted, running applications such as Adobe Photoshop or AutoCAD will change all that.

CONS!!!

This is OOB functionality, when connected to WiFi, the computer fails to load websites successfully on the first try sometimes. Day three, I would say it was doing it about 50% of the time. Lost another star there.

I'm returning the product because of the wifi issue.

I purchased two Series 9 laptops. Could not get the first one to run, spent 8 hours working on it and finally gave up and sent it back. The 2nd one has wireless connection issues and after a week of torture trying to use it I am sending it back as well. It will work for about 10 or 15 minutes and then I get a message telling me that the wireless connection is gone. This happens at home and at my work location. I tried adjusting the power saving settings per suggestions on the Samsung website but still having problems. I will NEVER buy a Samsung notebook again, they should stick to TVs.

Want Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D-A05US 15-Inch Premium Ultrabook (Silver) Discount?

With a couple upgrades, this ultrabook becomes an incredible machine. It is easy to make the upgrades yourself. I did it with very little technical knowledge.

RAM Upgrade to 16 GB (I recommend Crucial model CT2KIT102464BF160B)

SSD Upgrade to 256 GB (I recommend Crucial model CT256M4SSD3)

I make those recommendations because the RAM I mentioned has been tested with this model and found to be very stable, and the SSD I mentioned is double the capacity and MUCH faster than the default SSD that Samsung puts in there (look at the specs and reviews).

With those upgrades, you have great performance on the thinnest and lightest 15" laptop available.

As others have mentioned, the vertical viewing angle of this laptop's screen is not very wide, but the horizontal viewing angle is very wide. Take this into consideration if you need to have someone standing up see the screen at the same time as you're sitting down looking at it.

HP Pavilion DM3-3012NR Notebook Pc

HP Pavilion DM3-3012NR Notebook PcPurchased this laptop during black friday from Microsoft Store. Comes with Windows Ultimate Premium Home, very light, stays cool and the battery lasts for about 4 hours. Boots up fast, is mostly setup and ready to go. I hooked up an external drive using both eSata and USB and they both performed well, with eSata being faster for file transfers. The internal 320gb hard drive spins well and the 4gb of memory is enough to run multiple applications simultaneously. The screen though, is small, so you can't have too many windows opened at the same time due to the small screen real estate.

The unit does not come with built in optical drive, but has SD slots, so you can use your MS, SD by simply plugging it in. The keyboard is very easy to use, for a small laptop and the keys are nice and big, so you don't really have to get used to it, its just like typing on a regular keyboard.

One of the best parts of this laptop is the built in camera, which comes with a little light next to it for Skyping or other video based calling. The light brightens up your face even in low light conditions and works really well, I was very happy with it. I hooked up my Sony TV using the HDMI and the system automatically detected the television type and set the resolution to 1920x1200 (HD) and played a movie off my laptop very well, here I was pleasantly surprised at the performance of the video card and the HDMI output.

Surfing shouldn't be a problem as the interal wireless antenna performs well and picks up and maintains a signal for reliable web browsing. Audio output is also excellent and very good for a small unit.

All in all, great little laptop for the money, highly recommended.

I bought the laptop for 400$+14$ shipping. Its got EVERYTHING I need. Its LED 13-inch screen is crystal clear, and with Atlec Lansing speakers built right into this bad boy, its perfect for movies, music and what not. Gaming? Its CPU is bit weak(Dual Core 1.2 ghz) which wouldn't be expected to run any games. But this processor is a new one, with it's architecture the same as the i3, i5 and i7. With the 1695 MB of built in graphics memory, its runs games real smooth. Plus, its got a webcam built in. When you connect in a monitor/projector, it auto-detects the size of it and adjusts accordingly. The keyboard is just.......ordinary. You don't need to get used to it. If you know how to type, you'll be fine.

I had purchased an Acer and had problems right away, fortunately I was able to return it for a full refund and decided to go back to an HP and am very pleased with its performance. The only downside, which hasn't really impacted me thus far, is the is no CD drive, but with downloads, etc this is probably not a big deal.

Toshiba Satellite C855-S5343 PSCBLU-025003 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)

Toshiba Satellite C855-S5343 PSCBLU-025003 15.6-Inch LaptopToshiba is a multimedia company and their laptops are designed to please your senses with supremely bright and gorgeous displays and decent speakers while still maintaining crisp performance. Toshiba claims to be the first notebook maker with color LCD's, it is easy to believe after seeing the screen in person and their LCD's are consistently beautiful regardless of which Toshiba you pick. GPU performance is anecdotally impressive, I DON'T PRETEND TO BE A GAMER SO ANY IMPRESSIONS ABOUT ITS GAMING PEFORMANCE OR COMPATIBILITIES WOULD BE EASILY DETECTED ATTEMPTS TO b.s., but I did stress it by simultaneously playing two USB connected DVD's and a BluRay and it was excellent without jitter (see the uploaded video review).

Toshiba Satellites are the least expensive Toshiba laptops and their "C" series is the least expensive Satellite, so buying the cheapest Toshiba notebook made results in some immediately noticeable sacrifices such as the creaky flimsy flexing case and an integrated mouse track pad that feels worse than using a floating potato to move the cursor. I hate the flimsy keyboard, it as unpleasant as flossing your gums with sandpaper because the larger keys and chiclet imposter keyboard aren't comparable to someone accustomed to luxurious ThinkPad keyboards but I can't find a ThinkPad/Lenovo comparable to Toshiba horsepower unless I want to spend twice as much.

At least a floating potato is predictable but Toshiba has found some way to smuggle the cheapest Synaptic pads from North Korea since I can't imagine any other country willing to make such an annoying version of a normally reliable input. I've used other trackpads without issue, Synaptics is the largest manufacturer of most TrackPads, but I have never used a Synaptics or any trackpad as misreabl as these are. Do yourself a favor and buy a/use an external mouse Targus Bluetooth Comfort Laser Mouse AMB09US (Black with Gray) and you'll also avoid blowing an angered blood vessel since any amount of track pad usage leaves a blocking layer of human sweat that renders the trackpad useless until cleaned or avoided completely. Some models might not include integrated BlueTooth and upgrading the mini PCIe adapter isn't easily done in the C Series unless you plan to split the case open at the seams and likely void Toshiba's oversensitive warranty policy (read the appended comment for an imperative fact about protecting your warranty status).

A cheap $5 USB B/T SANOXY USB Bluetooth Wireless Adapter for HP, Gateway, eMachine, Dell or ANY Laptop/PC Running Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 200, XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7plug still spares two USB ports for a jump drive and recharging your BlackBerry.

Wi-Fi performance is excellent with an included Atheros AR9285 adapter Atheros AR5B95 AR9285 802.11B/G/N Half Mini PCI-E Cardthat starts out of the box shouting loudly at a better than average 16decibels. For the curious I elaborate in further detail in the appended review comment.

Don't be afraid of upgrading the RAM because boosted to 16GB it comfortably becomes a mini data center unto itself by installing a dual 2012 Server DataCenter build and Hyper-V shoulders as many VM's as you want.

Unbuntu runs extremely nicely except my chosen distro (BackTrackR3) doesn't immediately appreciate the 1368 wide display and drops to a stretched 1024x768 usually reserved for traditional 4:3 square displays.

The same wildly Windows compatible Microsoft 3000 Wireless combo Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 set runs without issue even at bootup before loading Windows or any operating system and is fully supported in Unbuntu w/o the necessity of installing a driver or editing configs. Connecting the jump drive sized USB dongle enables remote KB/M control from a verified 90 feet in an Marriott ballroom in case you have the necessity to tease your children or present your thoughts to a larger than economy sized auditorium.

I bought this laptop after much research and thought it had the right combination of hardware and software for the price(i bought it from another online store for $318) Well it wasn't long before i regretted the purchase. I can't believe i spent a whole day doing maintenance and tracking down a bad/missing file on the windows website. I looked up its history on its own event logs and found it had been having issues from the time it was produced! It struggles with the most basic of tasks, probably because of the horrendous amount of garbage software from Toshiba. You think im kidding? Log on to the internet and watch where it sends you. The touchpad is one of the worst i have ever tried to use and the plastic used for the body looks and feels like its from recycled material. Please dont buy. If you do, try it out and put it through its paces so you can see for yourself. Just make sure you dont let the return period elapse or you will be stuck with a major headache

This laptop was on sale at my local retail store. I was in the market for one, so I picked it up. If you can find this for a decent price? Pick it up! It's a lot better then a Dell. It's solid!

The only issue with it, and the main reason I'm writing this review: is the sound system. This is literally the worst sound I've ever heard. My Kindle Fire has better sound.

A solid laptop for a really good price.

If you want a computer for surfing and general home or business use you are not going to find this at this price in any store.

Windows 8 is pretty useless on a laptop without a touch screen but is pretty easy to get around so it acts like Windows 7.

Like the built in camera and this laptop weighs less than my old Toshiba.

Dislikes as always is the pre-installed try and then buy crapware that seems to come with every computer ever sold.

I really like my laptop after a couple of months. I'm still trying to decide if I like Win8. The computer boots quickly, it's light and the battery lasts about 6 hrs.

No problems.

Gateway 15.6" A6-3400M 1.40 GHz Laptop | NV55S02u

Gateway 15.6' A6-3400M 1.40 GHz Laptop | NV55S02uUnlike high priced and low quality macs, this computer is outstanding. With over 500gb of memory and an Amd A6 processor, this computer works great for any person. I am a huge video game player and the processor holds up on the biggest games. Although NO laptop can run games very long on battery, this one does well.

Being a student the size is perfect. Fits perfectly in my backpack (I use the 17" Widescreen Laptop Notebook Sleeve Soft Case to protect it) and weighs very little. Also for my job, I write estimates for a reconstruction company and I need my computer to run 4 programs at once. Never once has it slowed me down.

I had the 17 gateway almost identical to this, on this one they changed the touchpad and made it more interactive. They also changed the f keys at the top so you can activate and deactivated wifi, change your display, increase/decrease brightness, change/stop/play songs and change your brightness instantly.

Being a huge person against macs (because they are overpriced, used by the incompetent, and have no real advantages except looks battery life and weight) This is the ultimate reason to never buy a mac. Being half the price of the cheapest mac, it comes with over TWICE the memory, TWICE the processor speed, and can run some of the most demanding programs that you cant even download on a mac.

The only downfall is the battery life. But seriously 4 hours is enough to get me through my day and honestly there are plug ins available every 4ft in a house.

I went to best buy and office depot for a notebook. We compared prices and decided what to get. After comparing graphics GPU and CPU This was the best choice for the prices it can play games pretty well Mafia11 can go up to high settings minecraft works well. So far this is Doing very well no problems no over heat the fan is silent(While youtube websites and games that dont use much).

Perhaps early for a review as I've only had it a few months. Still, overall it is one of the best you can get for the money. I'm a writer and just needed to be able to take this with me wherever I go and to write. As other viewers have said, the speakers are not great, but in all honesty I wasn't buying it for the speakers. That is what headphones are for. If you want a stereo, buy a stereo. It's not that they are bad quality they just are not very loud, but loud enough that I can have it on the coffee table playing music and still hear it from the kitchen.

Processor speed is awesome, one reason I picked this one up over the other Gateway that had a larger screen was the fact this one had 2gb more DDR memory. The webcam is not perfect, it's 1.3 mp quality but again, you want a camera....buy a camera. Enough hard drive space to store tons of my music, writing documents and so forth. Boots extremely quickly. Seriously, for me it's perfect. If you are a non-gamer who needs a personal laptop for school, web-browsing, writing or casual business, this one is for you.

I enjoyed this computer for 5 months and the performance was really top notch.

Unfortunately, after 5 months, the hard drive died. I haven't contacted gateway yet for a replacement, so I just hope that's a smooth process. On the office depot website where I bought this laptop, one of the reviewers had the same problem. Their hard drive actually died 2x.Other than that, the speakers suck and one of the keys on my keyboard keeps popping up.

If you spend maybe $100 more, you can get a laptop that's just as powerful but doesn't have this pesky problem of frequent hard drive failure. Seeing as how the office depot guys tell me it'll cost $50 to get gateway to replace the hard drive, it might be smarter to spend the extra cash up front.

Want Gateway 15.6" A6-3400M 1.40 GHz Laptop | NV55S02u Discount?

It's now a poor product, worst customer service company. I have only ever owned gateway pc, laptops and so forth. My desktop lasted until I decided to purchase a laptop 5 plus years without any maifunctions or issues. Once I purchased the laptop a c140x convertible tablet, the computing power plus convenience made the desktop obsolete. So when my trusty convertible laptop's screen went dark, I decided to purchase a lighter weight notebook instead of repairing as the price was somewhat high to repair. I searched high and low for a gateway tablet and settled on this laptop. Unfortunately, while the price of gateway pcs has dropped drastically so has the quality.

I carry my NV550s2u in a cushioned laptop bag by targus, just as I had my tablet, but somehow the screen developed a spider crack. As the product was still in warranty, I contacted gateway for repair.

Customer Service Issues and Resolutions:

1. Was unable to reach the tech team without paying because their registration system indicated, I had purchased the laptop two months prior to my purchase date.

A.I persisted, doubled checked that I registered the product correctly and contacted Gateway a second time.

B. The representative fixed the date and provided a case # to return the laptop for repair.

2. Return was via snail mail$30.

A. I paid

3. The tech sent an email to inform me that although the laptop had no scuffs, dings, scratches or marks on any part of it, I must have dropped it, placed books on it or placed it upside down causing an internal (as in not visible to me or from the outside of the pc) crack to the lcd and would therefore need to pay an additional $199 or they would not repair.

A. I spoke to a service tech and explained that it was unacceptable to me that given the like new condition of the laptop and the warranty, that I should be expected to accept their word that the damage was caused by me.

B. I requested my call be escalated.

C. Gateway level II rep lowered the price to 100 even.

D. I paid only because the cost of having the laptop repaired locally was 125 so I would be out the cost of shipping and have to pay 25 more.

4. I received the repaired laptop. All of my information was wiped even though the level II rep indicated this would not be necessary since the issue was with the hardware/lcd.

A. I called gateway to complain about the time and cost of re-downloading the software and reorganizing my laptop for no reason and was told their must have been a reason but that rep did not know what it was and it was my fault because i sent the laptop to gateway and was given a disclaimer that said i may experience data loss. Or more succinctly, dumb me for trusting Gateway not to erase my data unless it was necessary to repair or replace the laptop.

5. The rep on this phone call Slvia, cut me off, screamed at me, sighed, laughed and was more rude than most people in life and definitely the rudest customer service rep. ever.

A. I asked to be escalated to which she said she handles all escalations.

B. I asked to speak to her supervisor and she said she could send an email to technical support (a different department) and they will deal with me.

6. Customer Service and feedback was not easy at all to find on the Gateway website, I spent a half hour searching for a phone number or email or form.

A. I finally found a form, and submitted it to let them know the issues I am having but have received no response.

B. A corp. rep called me in response to the email Slyvia sent. She sympathized with my frustration in a monotone voice but extended my warranty by 3 months (as if I would ever let gateway near my pc again).

In summary, I really wont be buying a gateway again. Beware of this laptop and any other newer gateways, they are gateways in name only having flimsy screens and casings. Also, the customizeability of specs, sturdiness, and even the keyboard layout have changed from those which originally made gateway a standout. The price point and quality are similar to other manufacturers low end models and I cannot imagine another manufacturer having worse customer service so...I'm thinking of a Toshiba or Lenovo Next!

Toshiba P745-S4102 - Laptop 14" Core i3 2350M Processor/ 6GB DDR3 RAM/ 750GB SATA Hard Drive (5400

Toshiba P745-S4102 - Laptop 14' Core i3 2350M Processor/ 6GB DDR3 RAM/ 750GB SATA Hard Drive/ DVD±RW/CD-RW drive / PlatinumBought this 4 months ago and the hard drive just went. And I babied this thing. I was so careful. Sent it back on my dollar...they do not pay for shipping. They sent me a box with no instructions and very minimal packing. I couldnt believe they ship like this. But they tell you if you pack it yourself you are responsible for any damages that happen. Sent it back and now they are saying I owe them 280 bucks for a cracked screen but the hard drive is covered under the warranty. What?? Cracked screen??? Im can't even say how big of a mistake this has been purchasing this computer. Customer service is horrible. They just give you the run around and no one actually tells you what to do. I am so disappointed with the quality of computers. I feel like Ive been scammed. Zero stars if that was possible.

:(

I could do any regular task(Microsoft word, PowerPoint, watch movies, videos, etc.) With ease. I could even play mmorpgs (2d and 3d with no high end graphics). Its perfect and light weight. Why not buy it?

On performance, it does well for its price range. This is my first laptop and I have had it for over three months now. At first I was really bothered by poor battery life (under two hours) but once I turned down the brightness, a full charge lasts much longer. The speakers do well for its range. It does fine with fairly demanding graphics without excessive lag, but it is not a graphics-oriented machine. The webcam quality is grainy with low sensitivity, and the sound recording is of similar quality.

Overall, it does fine in a college setting and for typical personal use and the price is proportionate to performance. It is not absolutely perfect but very sufficient and manageable.
