Toshiba Satellite R845-S85 14.0-Inch LED Laptop - Graphite Blue Metallic with Line Pattern

Toshiba Satellite R845-S85 14.0-Inch LED Laptop - Graphite Blue Metallic with Line PatternI bought this Laptop when it was the Amazon Deal of the Day for $599. I couldn't be happier with this purchase, especially at that ridiculously low price point. Instead of going over all the specs, I'll highlight some pros and cons of this laptop for potential buyers.

Pros:

Construction/Look: The chassis and chiclet keyboard (spill-resistant) feel real sturdy and of high-quality. The construction of this laptop doesn't have a cheap "plastic" feeling like some laptops out on the market.

Battery Life: The battery life on this 6-cell battery is unbelievable, especially for a 14' laptop. For the first few charge cycles, I've been able to consistently get over 7 hours of battery life surfing the web and playing music with headphones. The ecoUtility app really helps with prolonging battery life.

Intel WiDi capable: I really wanted a laptop with this capability so that I can wirelessly stream to my TV while working on my laptop. Note that you need to buy a WiDi adapter to connect to your TV/display (~$100).

Performance: The i5 processor coupled with 6GB of memory gives this laptop plenty of juice for 99% of computing activities.

SIZE of hard drive: 640GB of space is more than you'll probably even use.

Weight: 4.2 pounds and just about 1 inch thick makes this laptop pretty portable.

Optical Drive: This may not factor much for some people, but as more and more companies opt to remove optical drives from their laptops, it was nice to see Toshiba put in a full DVD burner/drive on this machine.

Connectivity: 1 USB 3.0 port AND capability for USB Sleep-and-Charge (charge stuff while laptop is off) AND an e-SATA/USB combo port AND an HDMI input is awesome!

Value: For the 600-800 price range for a 14 inch laptop, you'd struggle to find a laptop with this much under the hood.

Cons:

No Bluetooth: a tiny external USB dongle runs for about 10 bucks, but I wish Toshiba would have built-in a bluetooth receiver.

Screen: 1366 x 768 resolution (720p). Not bad by any means, but for a 14', It would have been nice to see a higher resolution offered.

Speakers: Sound can be a bit tinny at loud volumes. Noticably better than Portege R835 speakers though.

SPEED of hard drive: the 640GB hard drive only runs at 5400 rpm. I would have liked to see that be at 7200rpm or even a SSD drive, but all things considered, I can't complain much...just a nagging annoyance.

Bloatware/Volume of Apps: Toshiba seemed to have cut down on the total amount of bloatware they put on this machine but they have too many apps pre-installed on this machine for my liking so I ended up manually uninstalling some that I knew I would never use.

I would DEFINITELY recommend this laptop to anyone considering it at the $600-800 price point, as you'd be hard pressed to find significantly better deals. As another reviewer said, this is basically the 14 inch version of the Portege R835-P81 laptop (also sold on Amazon). That's just a smaller version (13.3' 3.2 lbs), but overall there are a LOT of similarities, even with the look. If you're in the market for a laptop with comparable specs but want something smaller, check that out. I hope this helps potential buyers out!

First let me tell you that this laptop not only looks good but it's also powerful, Thin and light weight.

I watched a bluray file and a 1080 mkv file at the same time with no stutter and with only 18% CPU load. My Quad core Desktop would start stuttering when I do this and cpu load goes to 100% (it's a Q6600 intel quad core cpu)

Had to instal java 64bit edition and directx runtime environment. Just make sure that whatever software you're instaling is 64bit compatible. had to increase color saturation to add more color but led display looks great. Tweaked touchpad settings a little bit to make it the way I like it. Theres an eco button that doubles your battery consumption to 10 hours with light use but dims the display brightness but you'll get used to it. Also it seems that pushing the eco button disables one core of the cpu. The computer wakes up instanly when you open the lid and resumes whatever it was doing. the wifi is very strong and picks up a lot of networks. Hard drive is easily accessible, only two screws. It runs very cool. I ran two 1080p bluray files at the same time through wifi N streaming from another computer with ease and no stutter. This laptop looks thiner in person and looks good. you can carry it with one hand from the corner and it doesn't bend like some do. you have esata, usb 3.0-2.0 combo. The speakers are loud, just make sure you enable loudness in audio properties and also select equalizer and increase the treble a little bit. No inputs in the back. when you rest your hands on the laptop wihile typing feels solid. Keyboard is very nice and I'm pretty picky when it comes to keyboards. After adjusting the color settings in the onboard video properties I watched the planet earth bluray streaming from my media server the display was crisp and clear with vivid colors like I was watching my 1080p led tv. Here's the color adjustments that I'm using, Saturation 10, contrast 1, brightness 0 and see the difference.

Update 6-5-12

if you do a lot of typing and word documents, I won't recommend this laptop because the cursor jumps all over the place while typing and you're constantly trying to get back to where you are to continue typing. It's not the way I type either because my fingers are away from the touch pad while typing. This is a major flaw with this laptop.

Pros:

Fast i5 processor

6 gigs of RAM, a spacious HDD

Long battery life (at least 4.5 hours on full blast; up to 7.5 hours if not used aggressively)

USB 3.0 (w/ sleep and charge)

HDD protection gizmo allegedly protects the hard drive from minor accidents

Cons:

Squishy keyboard beware if you're a regular touch typist!

The wireless antenna works only on the 2.4 GHz band even my 3-year old HP Pavilion can connect to the 5 GHz band! However, this laptop has far better reception, so it's not such a big deal. Just a tad disappointing.

Everything seems cheap the hinges creak, the plastic looks cheesy. When I lug it around closed, I'm afraid it will crack open.

A really silly choice of dedicated shortcut buttons (there are only two; one is for turning on the Eco mode why would I need to do this in a hurry? why? the other one switches on the WiDi; IMHO a mute + wifi antenna buttons would have made much more sense)

Despite all the negative remarks, the laptop gets the job done without breaking a sweat, and if it weren't for the horrid keyboard I'd have given it 4 stars.

I payed a little extra for this computer thinking faster speed etc. compared to my 2 year old 15.6 inch toshiba we bought on sale from Best buy for $350. I was wrong. So far, there is absolutely no advantage compared to the lesser version from two years ago. It's not just the Core i5 processor either, as I bought my brother-in-law the HP equivalent (same processor, memory, speed etc)and that computer performs much better than this one. Something is just off with the design or this specific model as previously I have been happy with Toshiba products (why I kept this one and gave the HP as a gift). Battery life promised 10 hrs but I get 8 hours at best (when relatively inactive and only on the Eco mode where it shuts down every 30 seconds and the screen is dimmed to point where you can barely read). I get 3 hours of battery at most when online.

With an SSD Upgrade (I'd recommend Crucial 128 GB for around $160), this baby just flies.

Windows boot-up time is around 14 seconds, programs open almost instantly, and even programs that take up a few gigabytes install in seconds. By far the best laptop I've owned, comes to around $800 with the SSD upgrade. Besides you'll have a free 640 GB external slim hard drive for all your storage (movies, music, photos) purposes. (Don't forget to order an HDD enclosure for around $5-10)

The power usage while browsing with wireless on and brightness at half averages around 7 Watts, so I'd expect to get a good 8.5-9 hours of usage with the 66 Wh battery. (SSDs consume less power than HDDs)

Compared to various higher-end ultrabooks costing around $1200, the R845-S85 has a slightly better CPU, same Graphics (Intel HD 3000), better battery, and more ports (3xUSB, HDMI, VGA, ethernet). Besides the Crucial SSD also outperforms other brands in benchmark tests. OK, it's a pound heavier, quarter of an inch thicker, and doesn't have the "looks", but it's hundreds of dollars cheaper despite the higher performance&quality components and the build quality of Toshiba. (owned an Asus before buying this, which fell apart because of the cheap plastic case, poor DC Jack and bad build quality overall)

The only downside is that the GPU (Intel HD 3000), which won't allow new games with high settings. But then again, sub 14-inch notebooks almost never have dedicated graphics cards.

If you are looking for a portable and inexpensive powerhouse, this is the one to go with. Highly recommended.

HP ENVY 14-2050SE 14.5-Inch Beats Edition Notebook (Black)

HP ENVY 14-2050SE 14.5-Inch Beats Edition NotebookAll the computers I own are HPs. My older ones have always had fairly poor design materials and have notoriously overheated. When I purchased this laptop I was nervous about these common HP problems as well as the harsh review given over the quality of the screen. When I opened this laptop, however, I was blown away by the quality of packaging as well as the breathtaking aesthetics of the laptop itself. Tentatively I turned on the computer (as I prepared for the worst), but, to my surprise, I was greeted with a screen that easily displayed vibrant colors and looked just about as good as any 14" laptop would. Apple is a bit ahead on the screens and batteries they use, but this laptop has a perfectly fine display and a fantastic battery life. I copied vast amounts of music and videos from an external drive while installing various programs (such as visual studio which took about an hour to install) and this laptop completed all those operations while living up to a battery life of about 4 hours (I imagine the battery life is much better when the computer is simply word processing or internet browsing). Another surprise was the quality of the graphics processing in this computer. So far I have run MW2 and Fallout: New Vegas on high and ultra (respectively), and the graphics card has handled everything with ease. I do plan on giving it harder tasks to accomplish (ahem Crysis 2), but for all graphics computing within the norm of PC games I'd say this computer can definitely handle it. While running these games I also checked the amount and temperature of the air that was moving out of the vents and once again I was surprised at how cool it was. Another plus is the notable lack of vents on the bottom of the laptop which invariably suck up dust and cause the computer to run exponentially hotter (there are two vents only: one on the right side and one in the middle of the back). The only complaint I have is the power cable which is pretty deep and kinda hard to put in and take out.

In conclusion, the i5 processor, generous RAM and VRAM, mid class 2 graphics card, secondary storage, superior sound card, slot-loading optical drive, back-lit keyboard, and overall appearance should leave any consumer satisfied and proud to own a laptop of this caliber. The xbox is also a nice plus (which you can get off amazon and hp just check the details).

Hello, this is my first review!!

First of all I will talk about the HP envy's design. its design is just really cool, it loos like a very sophisticated, elegant, and very modern laptop. Also the lid of the laptop is made out this opaque black aluminum which hides a alot scratches, but is also a fingerprint magnet, but if you clean it once in a while you won't have a problem.

Next, the most important thing for me performance.

The laptop with the i5 processor, has a very good performance,it is quick, it loads windows in a few seconds. I use it for gaming a lot, and I have had no problem playing games like Mafia 2, Mass Effect 2, Half Life 2 and other games, ALL in High quality graphics, and a 1366x768 resolution. The only bug I have with the performance is in the noise, the laptop is a little bit loud, not extremely. For example is you are at work with your laptop and there is a little noise in the office you won't hear it, but if you are at home alone, you will probably hear it. TIP: shut off the cool sense because it will lower the noise and save battery( the laptop won't get hot anyways). Something I love about it is how cool (sense of heat) it is, while gaming it doesn't even get slightly warm.

Next screen:

The screen is real glossy, but also very nice resolution, the colors are bright as hell. Also the nice is really nice for gaming, but not too big, to carry around.

Track pad and keyboard;

The track pad many people say that it is horrible, but it really isn't its just something you got to get used too. I have had this PC for almost 3 weeks and I haven't felt any difficulty on the track pad, only maybe in the first 2 or 3 uses, but then nothing. The keyboard does have a slight flex but nothing serious that you would feel.

Battery: There as myths about this PC's battery. Let me tell you, they are false, I believe Apple invented them to make people don't buy this PC. For example, yesterday I played 3 and half hours on battery with my pc hooked up to my TV with high graphics, high performance and wireless turned on, and when I stopped playing I still had 15% battery= 35min (The laptop said) but once I started instead using Facebook the PC told me that (after 15min) I had 10%= to 30min. So the battery can easily last up to 5:30 or 6 hours.\

Finally I will talk somethings in general.

Overall this laptop is really great, it has excellent performance, excellent SOUND( the beats sound is GREAT), also excellent graphics and excellent price compared to similar laptops in the market, such as the Macbookpro which is 1200 dollars the 13.3 inch, which doesn't even have a graphics card (LOL). don't think it twice and buy this laptop, Also if you might want it with an i7 processor you can get it too. The only disadvantage again is the sound, which is not much and maybe the fingerprint magnet lid. If you have any questions please don't be afraid to ask here and I will get to you.

First off I would like everyone to know that I bought this as a Macbook clone, because while I admire the aesthetics of macs I'm not a huge fan of the OS. In that it succeeds, from the bezel trim, to the smooth finish it is a close match to the real thing. With Windows 7 which I much prefer. After using the laptop for about a week I have no complaints, except for the screen, it does have a bit of glare and I wish the envys' still came with the superior radiance display instead of the cheaper Brightview. Although I wouldn't be as dramatic about it as the other guy, the black aren't grey like the other guy said. It does have a lot of glare at 60% brightness which I use by default to save battery (at 100% its barely noticeable). But is it bearable at the least.

A bit on the specs, this laptop is pretty fast, I love its large 7200 rpm HD (which copied all my music and videos in like 20 mins, which was much faster than it was when I wrote to a 5400) the i5 seems fast, with no hiccups so far. A few of my friends have suggested I go with an i7, which you as a customer might consider. However to me battery life is king with a laptop, and the fact is an i7 just takes up more juice period. However if you want more of a complete desktop replacement, and want to be plugged in all the time def go with the i7.

In closing I love this laptop, except for the grounded charger cable I almost forgot that LOL, it's prolly just a problem for me because my house only has a couple 3 prong outlets. (Grounded = 3 prong, 2 prong is what I thought was the norm but I guess not for HP)

Also the complaints from past models seem to be fixed, i.e. the trackpad, it works just as good as a mac if not better for me, it might be because I'm used to touch phones and such idk.

Edit: I would just like to add a few things, First the battery life is awesome, I use it maybe an hour or two a day and charge it only a few times a week. Another added bonus which wasn't even advertised was the inclusion of adobe elements,(consumer level) such as photoshop elements and premiere elements. These retail for $150, and are awesome, especially since they beat out mac software such as imovie.

This laptop is great. At first I thought I would be paying for the beats logo, but that was not the case at all. Besides from being very stylish and cool looking this computer has very good hardware. The beats audio makes the laptop have good sound (Although I will admit I expected a little more from the speakers in the laptop, but with an okay pair of headphones it sounds pretty boss). The keys are really nice and easy to use. The touch pad is also nice easy to use and it has a feature were you can lock the touch pad. The laptop itself run very well it doesn't come with any BS already installed programs. It comes with photoshop elements which is a cool bonus. and the webcam is great one of the nicest I've seen on a laptop. Overall this laptop is great for the price. You really get your moneys worth from this and off of Amazon is the cheapest I found it at.

It's not the same thing I was expecting for, to tell the true I was expecting much more ,even something unreal, from the appearance. But totally It's very good machine. It's fast enough for gaming, good clean sound... The screen is good enough... Anyway I was not disappointed that I've got it.

HP Pavilion ze4325us Laptop (1.67-GHz Athlon XP-M 2000+, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Dr

HP Pavilion ze4325us LaptopI purchased one of these computers only six weeks ago. On the second time out I detected black spots on the screen, where there should have been pixels. Pressing the screen brought some of them back, but as the day progressed the marks became cracks in the LCD screen itself. I reported the matter to HP the next day and they agreed to collect the unit for warranty repair. Some 10 days later they called me up demanding $650 to replace the screen, saying they were not prepared to honor the warranty for a crack.

The lid is totally too flimsy to take the stress of holding the closed unit and lifting it from a carry bag. There is a connector right where you grasp the case, and this can dig in and crack the screen. For a portable laptop the design is not fit for purpose.

NB the electronics work great but without a screen are of little value!

A refurbished version was given to me as a gift. It works great for me. Only issues:

1) Left touchpad button has become flaky. Maybe overuse on my part.

2) 256MB was insufficient for watching DVD movies. I installed additional 256MB and playback was improved.

BTW, HP Support is excellent. They have an Active Chat support utility that is available online that allows you to 'chat' in real time with support personnel.

Toshiba Satellite C655-S5119 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Toshiba Satellite C655-S5119 15.6-Inch LaptopCertainly this laptop lacks all the bells and whistles (no HDMI, no Webcam, no Mic etc) associated with a typical modern laptop, so what? It sure is built to perform and I am very pleased with its performance. The CPU has 3M cache, great for multitasking, all its components rate very well on the Windows performance index and the screen is nice and bright. I love its keyboard!

I bought Logitech 2 MP Webcam Pro 9000 with Built-in Microphone, which was available for $35 during Thanksgiving weekend and it just resolves the no webcam issue with it and at $365 (330+35) I would say it is a steal!

The rating given is a reflection on amazon's goof up.

The laptop is a decent one with sufficient power for daily use. The bottleneck for performance might be the graphics card. It has a full size keyboard which is attractive. The display is a little sunken compared to a hp laptop making it look smaller.

Now coming to Amazon's part (the seller):

If a product is offered as a part of a lightening deal we at least expect the product description to be reliable. A decision has to be made in a minute or two which will cost hundred's of dollars. One of the main use of a laptop for me is skype. A missing webcam and mic implies I will have to spent more money and also carry an additional thing wherever I take this laptop.

Edit:

I contacted the amazon customer service and they are working for a resolution. The reply was prompt which earns them a star more.

Buy Toshiba Satellite C655-S5119 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Now

I am really pleased with this laptop. I needed a machine primarily for internet use but wanted it fast enough to handle additional tasks if needed. I think for this purpose it exceeds my expectations and I think it is a good value. It also interfaces really well with Facebook and games, and is fast.

The screen is more clear and bright than my old Dell, and it has a shiny, not matte, surface. I appreciate that it is not all loaded up with junk programs. It offered Norton at setup (which I decided not to load), and even came with a freebie version of Word and Excel which has ads on the screen but at least its something. The exterior is textured which hides fingerprints, and for the size it is not heavy. Best thing is it doesnt seem to get hot and its very quiet. Its perfectly quiet.

My only complaint when the lid is closed, it goes into sleep mode and as far as I can tell you have to reboot when you open the lid. One minor thing regarding the keyboard, the number pad is on the right side, not on the top, so I feel a little off center when I type. However, I expect to get used to that in no time.

This is the second time I've ordered a Toshiba laptop and both were terrible and crashed within the first month of use. Do not buy Toshiba. VERy POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE full warranty for the first year, but they make you pay to have it returned to be fixed.

I could live without the web cam, although I really would have liked and used it.

However, the hard drive spins with a loud whine, which is getting louder. I haven't been able to use it much, because of a hectic week at work, but today it rebooted itself 3 times while I was trying to read email.

Enough is enough it is going back, and I don't want a replacement. I am not sure if I will try another Toshiba or not. My last Gateway was still doing very well after 4 years, until I gave it away because I bought this Toshiba!

ASUS A53E-XA2 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black)

ASUS A53E-XA2 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment LaptopSorry for the length, but I feel buyers should know... I own two Dell desktops, a Toshiba laptop, and an Asus gaming laptop. I feel that I am very adequate with technical knowledge and I handle most of my support issues personally (i.e. hardware upgrades, repairs, as well as software issues). I researched desktops and laptops extensivelly before I made any purchases. I recently had to purchase a laptop for a graduation gift for my son. I wanted to get him a good laptop for college, which could handle all his classwork and also provide some entertainment. I found numerous reviews on laptops, and two of the most relaible sources listed Asus and Toshiba as tops in reliability. This does not suprise me. I love my Asus gaming laptop. My Toshiba laptop had issues when I tried to use the recovery disk to take it back to its factory state. Toshiba's customer service was useless and I really feel that they were running a scam to get me to service the laptop through them. I was not happy with them, thankfully I could fix it myself (Clean install of operating system because their recovery disc, the one that came with it, and the two I had to purchase directly from them, were corrupt and would not install). This brings me back to Asus. Who is Asus, but the manufacturer of top hardware for other companies. They are the manufacturers of motherboards and such for companies like Dell and HP. When you buy a Dell or HP, you are most likely purchasing an Asus product. Therefore, why not just buy the Asus instead. Take a good look at their warranty... not bad, is it? I cannot comment on their custumer service, because I have never had to contact them. From other sources I hear that they have one of the best support services in the US. Moving along, this takes me to this Asus model. I struggled with my decision to purchase this model due to the ratings. I always take others personal experiences into consideration. However, in this case I decided to follow my own instincts and disregard what others said. After searching high and low, this was a great price for a laptop with these specs, and from a manufacturer who I have solid faith in. I bought it. I took the time to set it up properly... which if you have ever done this, it is not a plug and play process. It is a grueling 3-4 hours of creating recovery discs (you can just use the partition, but why take the chance), updating hardware (drivers and such) and fully updating windows. You MUST fully uninstall the security software (virus, firewall, etc...) that comes with the laptop if you decide to go with another security software company. DO NOT JUST PUT YOUR OWN SECURITY SOFTWARE ON WITHOUT UNINSTALLING THE FACTORY STATE SOFTWARE! (This could be the cause of a lot of issues) To fully uninstall, I suggest you go to that company's support website and follow their directions for uninstallation, including using their downloadable tool if one is provided. When you have two different security software products installed on the same computer, you could create a wicked war that will cause operating system errors, failures, and unfortunately crashes. Hmmmm, sound familiar? While this process is time consuming, it should be followed no matter which laptop you purchase! After following all of this, I found this laptop to be excellent. No errors, no failures, and definitly no crashes. Not to disregard other buyer's issues and reviews, no company is perfect and lemons do make it to the market. It is up to you to decide, but in my opinion, I have purchased a wonderful laptop, with great specs, for an amazing price. I am so happy I followed my instincts. Congratulations Asus, you have once again raised the bar!

This is a great deal. I spent a long time researching laptops in the 500-800 dollar price range to figure out what the best fit for me would be. After comparing and researching for weeks, I randomly found this listing for this laptop one night, and purchased it 10 minutes later. Even though this laptop had only 10 reviews and less than 3 stars, my gut told me to go with it. And I'm glad I did.

Now let's get a few things straight right off the bat. It has no USB 3.0. It also has no WiMAX or WIDI capabilities.

That is the end of my cons list.

Now for the pros. For $529.00, you get:

-The latest Intel i5 processor with Sandy Bridge, running at 2.3ghz with turbo boost up to 2.9ghz. And it works fabulously.

-A 640gb hard drive

-A comfortable chiclet keyboard complete with a numpad.

-One of the best touchpads I've used on any laptop, ever.

-A 1-year standard warranty AND a 1-year accidental warranty. I love ASUS.

-A damn sexy computer.

Now I don't know what the negative reviewers on this site are talking about. I have not once had "programs open at random" or anything of that nature. I have never once had a problem turning on or shutting down the computer, or lag of any sort. Then again, I did take the time to remove any programs I did not want when I received it, I created restore disks, and I configured my anti-virus properly. PCs with Windows these days are incredibly dumbed-down, user-friendly machines. Now I understand that not all people are technologically savvy. I understand that even with the user-friendliness of Windows 7 things can be extremely confusing, especially getting things setup for the first time. And that is fine. However, I think it is just plain silly and extremely misleading to rate a product 1/5 stars when the only thing that should be rated 1/5 is your own technological know-how. I'm sorry, I just felt like that needed to be said. Now back to the actual review.

This computer runs quickly, has a decent display, the hdmi works flawlessly, the Smart-Logon facial recognition works incredibly (you do have to set it up and configure it correctly, obviously), it runs as fast as you would think the i5 should, it looks SEXY AS HELL, it feels like it's built like a tank, it has never once felt more than SLIGHTLY warm no matter what I'm putting it through, it connects to the internet 2 minutes after unboxing and is an overall GREAT DEAL.

If you are reading this review and considering this laptop, but are afraid to purchase it based on the negative reviews, I understand your concern. But I'm here to tell you that I had the same concern, purchased it anyway, and am very glad that I did. If you can do without USB 3.0 and WIDI/WiMAX capabilities, this computer is perfect for you. In my opinion, it is just as durably built, just as fast, just as nice as most $700.00 laptops I've seen recently. Don't let the bad reviews steer you away. Read the good ones. Then click the "Add to Cart" button and be on your merry way.

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews about this computer.I recently bought this computer and I am very happy with this product. ASUS used to make motherboards, they know what they're doing!! I have owned SONY VIAO, Toshiba, HP, and others and I am well acquainted with good computers and bad computers. I am very happy with this computer. The i5 processor has been able to handle my every need, it also has a turbo processor which has helped immensely.

I travel a lot (usually get about 6hrs, which is a lot for a screen this big) and the battery life is great. The option to have the computer running on high performance or battery saving, I think that is great depending on what you're doing. The screen size is great. I wasn't to comfortable with the keyboard at first, but after a week I was.

The only thing I can truly complain about with this computer is the camera. The video quality is medium, which is not what I expected of ASUS. Not a problem however if you don't use it too much. If it is a problem you can buy a good one on the internet from $40. Overall I am very happy with this computer, other than the camera I have no problems. I will update if there is anything wrong with it.

I have read others issues with this computer and have seen none of such with my machine. The only thing bothersome to me is that the price of computers drop so much, a month ago I paid $100 more. Cannot blame anyone for that though, its just how it is. The computer runs great and I do not have any sort of errors or freezing problems to note about. I am not doubting the other users having problems or their capabilities of being able to use the computers, however I am wondering if some (the ones complaining about software issues) might be related to malware or adware that was inadvertantly installed due to navigating or downloading certain things from the web. I do not use this laptop for heavy computing or tasks. I bought it for convenience of having a computer to tote around with me. Its perfect for that and I would not hesitate to buy it again. Especially since it dropped $100 in a month. grr!

Want ASUS A53E-XA2 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black) Discount?

After much research I chose the ASUS A53E-XA2 laptop because it had all of the features I wanted at a reasonable price. There were several bad reviews from people who apparently had some issues with this model, but I have had none of the problems others have described and am very happy with my purchase. However I also created my own back-up disks and removed the inferior pre-installed antivirus software and installed a better one. Twice actually because I later changed my mind and decided on a different antivirus. Never had a problem.

I would point out that the trackpad is EXTREMELY sensitive. I've just hovered my finger over it while I was reading and the next thing I know I've unintentionally clicked something. It also has sophisticated features like you can zoom in or out of a page or turn on the scroll function, this has also unintentionally happened several times. This is to be expected from a trackpad with so many capabilities. I don't really consider this a problem, just an annoyance.

I will also say that it is sometimes a little slower than I expect when opening programs. I am a photographer and often have several different things open at the same time between editing programs and various websites I use. Sometimes there is a lag when I open a program for the first time, or when a program or site is open but unused for awhile and I go back to it. But this only happens the one time, and not even all the time, and after that it's fine. I've also noticed this becomes a bigger problem and my editing programs start lagging if I don't fully shut down the computer for several days. Again, this is something I can live with.

I have not removed any of the other pre-installed software because far as I can tell they have not caused any problems, but others who are more, um, persnickety let's say, might want them gone. Shouldn't be a big deal.

Overall I would definitely recommend this laptop. And already have. Just have realistic expectations, you're not going to get a $1000 worth of performance from a $500 computer. But it is a solid computer and can handle a lot.

Dell Latitude 100-L laptop

Dell Latitude 100-L laptopI have owned the 1.8 P4 version for 2 years and I am considering buying one just to have should anything happen to this one. Even by today's standards this is a very good laptop. The ONLY drawback is that there is only 1 USB port and it is 1.1 but that is very easily solved with a $15 PCMCIA card with USB 2.0 ports. This is not a "gamer" laptop but it is a serious workhorse that you can adapt in so many ways to your needs that you can't with most even today. For example, if you tend to need more battery time than the DVD drive (I upgraded my CD to a DVD burner) then just pop out the DVD and pop in an extra battery. Or like in my case I wanted more hard drive so I bought a 100 gig to replace the main hard drive and by doing a little surfing online I found a parts place that sells an enclosure for a second hard drive that fits perfectly into the DVD slot, so since I do not need the DVD very often I have another 100 gig drive in most of the time, how cool is that!? Add to that that it has S video out, vga out plus a keyboard port in case you prefer a regular keyboard when at home. The video is a respectable 32 meg ATI and I have run some games and applications that were not suppose to be able to run on it according to specs. This laptop only accepts 1 gig total memory but under XP that is fine and will keep you moving along smoothly. I ordered mine with the wireless networking card (802.11b but you can buy very cheaply a G card that will go right in to replace the B card or if yours doesn't come with a card you can add one VERY cheaply) and the speeds are so close to my G PCMCIA card that I use the B card built into mine with my G router.

When you really look at just what your getting for a comparable price these days, for everything this one is capable of I cannot recommend grabbing one of these enough, it is sturdy, nice size screen (14.1) and just an overall feeling of confidence in this laptop because it "feels" durable. When these were brand new I'm told you could not by them as an individual as they were only meant for business purchasers.

Bottom line: you want something worth the money this is it no question. Admittedly I put another $200 into mine but that was all upgrades to the memory and DVD and adding another hard drive. As it comes it is an awesome deal in today's market will run rings around many laptops in the same price range.

In case you missed it through all the techie talk, buy this laptop!

HP g6-1a50us Notebook PC - Silver

HP g6-1a50us Notebook PC - SilverAlthough I've only had it for a few weeks now, this is my very first laptop and I am thoroughly enjoying it. The display image is sharp and clear making it perfect for movies and gaming. It fits perfectly in my backpack for school and can be hidden from my toddler easily. The only downfall I have seen so far is the 4 hour battery life. I have to carry around the power cord if I plan on using it for great lengths away from home. Over all, Its a great laptop.

if your looking for a good laptop for a low price, this is for you. it does everything for home use. the laptop even looks cool, gloss finish

Subject line really says it all. You're getting an amazing value here and when I bought it I thought it was too good to be true... well, I was right to a certain extent. Everything works fine and smooth, but the keyboard on this thing is just awful. If you're typing quickly and aren't smashing the keys hard enough, expect to press backspace every other second to go back and add a missing letter. I've gotten used to it now and I just type really hard, but my hands are already in enough pain as it is.

So, basically, if you don't mind having to type prety (see, that should read "pretty" but since I didn't hit 't' hard enough the second time it didn't respond, ugh) hard in order for the keyboard to be responsive this laptop is truly a great value! I would've given it 5 stars if the keyboard was even decent, but this is just an awful keyboard and, thus, an otherwise incredible value turns into an average buy.

*Update 7/27/11* I purchased another one of these for my business and it came in with a perfectly fine keyboard! Now I see another reviewer stating their keyboard was totally defective as well, so I'm guessing that HP is having issues producing the keyboards on these laptops consistently well. I'm going to file a warranty claim with HP (already sent them an email) and see what happens. I'm going to take this down to a 3/5 until the issue is resolved.

*Update 9/12/11* HP was kind and curteous about the issue and sent a shipping box immediately after I filed the complaint. It's too bad some of these are being shipped out with defective keyboards because, otherwise, these are laptops sold at an amazing value. I think it may very well be the reason their sold at that price... the quality control is poor here. If you get a defective keyboard don't wait on it, send it back immediately through Amazon and try again. It's a major inconvenience, whether or not HP is good about it, to have to go through warranty support.

Its a great computer. I bought it for my husband for father's day so he hasn't used it yet, but I have been setting it up for him. It was so easy to set up the wireless connection and the wireless printer. It's light, the screen is big and its fast. I love it and I am sure my husband will love it too. I also like the fact that Amazon.com has the no payment/no interest for 6 months, so I can pay it off with no interest.

Great laptop for my 8 year old son. He skypes with grandpa and friends, plays games, uses email. Nice graphics, builtin webcam, lightweight. I purchase this from a big box retailer of office products for a final price considerably less than Amazon. Do shop around. You might be able to find one with a rebate. I'd say I ended up paying about two thirds the cost of the one here.

Toshiba P745-S4102 - Laptop 14" Core i3 2350M Processor/ 6GB DDR3 RAM/ 750GB SATA Hard Drive (5400

Toshiba P745-S4102 - Laptop 14' Core i3 2350M Processor/ 6GB DDR3 RAM/ 750GB SATA Hard Drive/ DVD±RW/CD-RW drive / PlatinumBought this 4 months ago and the hard drive just went. And I babied this thing. I was so careful. Sent it back on my dollar...they do not pay for shipping. They sent me a box with no instructions and very minimal packing. I couldnt believe they ship like this. But they tell you if you pack it yourself you are responsible for any damages that happen. Sent it back and now they are saying I owe them 280 bucks for a cracked screen but the hard drive is covered under the warranty. What?? Cracked screen??? Im can't even say how big of a mistake this has been purchasing this computer. Customer service is horrible. They just give you the run around and no one actually tells you what to do. I am so disappointed with the quality of computers. I feel like Ive been scammed. Zero stars if that was possible.

:(

I could do any regular task(Microsoft word, PowerPoint, watch movies, videos, etc.) With ease. I could even play mmorpgs (2d and 3d with no high end graphics). Its perfect and light weight. Why not buy it?

On performance, it does well for its price range. This is my first laptop and I have had it for over three months now. At first I was really bothered by poor battery life (under two hours) but once I turned down the brightness, a full charge lasts much longer. The speakers do well for its range. It does fine with fairly demanding graphics without excessive lag, but it is not a graphics-oriented machine. The webcam quality is grainy with low sensitivity, and the sound recording is of similar quality.

Overall, it does fine in a college setting and for typical personal use and the price is proportionate to performance. It is not absolutely perfect but very sufficient and manageable.

Acer Notebook AS5560-8225;NX.RNTAA.001 15.6-Inch LaptopI can play lots of games on this laptop as-well as work efficiently. Looks nice, feels great. I Really think this computer is exceptional.

This computer is okay, but it does not have a Pentium processor; it is AMD. It also does not have Windows 7 Professional as it states. I am working on getting it resolved, but so far they are b.s.ing me with the serial number of my computer. I am sure it is as the serial number states, but it is not as advertised. I will never buy from this company again.
