Dell AX-3600GSL Adamo XPS 13.4-Inch Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Dell AX-3600GSL Adamo XPS 13.4-Inch LaptopI purchased the Dell Adamo XPS about 2 months ago after debating between the raw performance of an Alienware laptop versus the thin-and-light Adamo XPS. I am glad to have chosen the Adamo XPS.

Unpacking the Adamo XPS, you'll see it comes with a 20 WHr battery, a mini-display port to DVI adapter, USB ethernet adapter, cleaning cloth, and power adapter with extension cord. The laptop itself is a mere 9.99mm thick and weighs 1.6 lbs with battery installed. The laptop comes with an Intel ULV processor, 128 GB solid state drive by Samsung (PM800 model if anyone wants to look at its specs), 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel GM45 graphics, GPS and Skyhook wifi triangulation, light sensor, webcam, 802.11abgn, and bluetooth. The 13.4" widescreen is LED backlit and has a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2 (translation, pretty freaking bright!). It also has a SIM card slot on the lower left corner of the chassis, but I cannot find any information as to whether it has WWAN built in or not.

Physically, the laptop has a very finished and svelte look and feel to it. After swiping your fingers over the capacitive sensor at the lid of the screen, the locks disengage using a current sensitive metal that warps when a charge is applied to it. When open, there is no flex at the joint, which was a concern of mine as it seemed like a weak pivot point, even when pushing down with the palm of my hand at the keyboard, there is no noticeable flex. As part of the design, the processor and memory was placed above the keyboard area, which cleverly allows for air ventilation below the laptop and when used on your lap, prevents your legs and wrist from getting warm. The keyboard is chiclet styled, made with metal rather than painted plastic. Two speakers are hidden underneath the R and I keys on the keyboard, while a third downward facing speaker is on the bottom of the laptop.

Now that introductions are out of the way, I'll give you some of my observations on the laptop.

The solid state drive allows the laptop to boot fast, 15 seconds fast! After pressing the power button, it only takes the laptop 15 seconds to get to the windows login screen.

It is very comfortable to use on the lap. This was a concern of mine as the unconventional style looked like it would dig into my lap. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case, and in fact was more comfortable overall, especially when compared with my Macbook Pro (which is akin to using a clothing iron on your lap). The Adamo XPS weighs only about 2 lbs overall, which really is no heavier than a paperback book, and since Dell placed the highest heat generating parts (memory and CPU) above the keyboard where it is furthest from your lap and wrists, my lap stays nice and cool. I am continuously amazed at how it feels like I am typing on thin air while I am using the laptop on my lap.

The engraving Dell chose to use to label the keys on the keyboard is annoying. It feels terrible when my nails slide over the key labels on the metal keyboard. It is like sliding your nails from a smooth glass surface to a surface made of sandpaper.

For touch-typists like me, the lack of ridges on the J and F keys is another added annoyance.

The buttons on the trackpad are springy and soft, nice!

The computer comes with Fast Access Facial Recognition, which allows for you to use your face to login to the computer. From my experience, it works very well, and adds to that futuristic feel when all you need to do is sit down in front of your "thinnest laptop in the world" and watch it login for you.

Center of gravity. With the unusual form factor, stability was a concern. The angle between the screen and keyboard cannot be opened greater than 60 degrees, which is a bummer when you are sitting close to the laptop. However, as all the heavy components are in the keyboard area, stability or the danger of tipping over was a non-issue.

-The display is VERY bright; it almost hurts my eyes to use it indoors above 50% brightness. The laptop has a built in light sensor next to the power button that adjusts the brightness of the screen automatically. Colors are nice but viewing angles on the screen is average, colors start to look "off" at 70 degrees away from looking straight at the screen. I guess I was just spoiled from using tablet pcs, which have very wide viewing angles.

The battery is a pain to figure out how to remove. Dell designed the laptop so that you can "hot-swap" the batteries, that is, you can simply put the laptop to sleep and swap the batteries out without needing to boot the computer up again (it has a small internal battery that allows you 30 seconds to change the batteries). After much fiddling and being afraid of snapping the battery, I finally figured out how to properly remove the battery. Close the laptop and place it upside down, so that the battery is at the top facing away from you, the Dell logo on the underside should be upside-down. Using both hands, place the nails of your fingers in the crevice of the battery and apply a gentle force inwards towards the center of the laptop. While doing so, use your left hand's thumb to engaging the battery release lock, the battery should pop out with no resistance at all when done right. What were they thinking?

Battery life with the standard battery is mediocre. Dell bundled a battery saving software that automatically turns off Windows Aero and engages CPU throttling to help save battery, but even then I only squeak by with 2.5 hours of usage with wifi.

Even with using Intel's ULV processor sipping 10 Watts max, the computer feels extremely peppy, it has no problem multitasking with Hulu videos, working on Word and Excel, while surfing the internet at the same time. That said, it is not a gaming laptop, so don't expect it to play graphics-intensive games.

Overall, with minimum compromises, mainly in battery life, I feel Dell has created an engineering marvel. It is a product that truly showcases how far personal computing technology has brought us. I feel as if I made the right purchasing decision.

Update 9-17-10:

Extended warranties on this laptop are a doozy! I called Dell to find out how much it would cost to extend my warranty from 1 year to 3 years. The cost quoted to me was $1500. ALMOST THE PRICE OF THE LAPTOP! The representative stated that the cost of the individual parts exceed $900 per part because of how specialized the laptop is. But still!

Got the Adamo xps for work. I do a lot with microsoft office including outlook and onenote. I couldn't have asked for a better machine. thin and easy to carry (esp with extended battery to curl fingers around). easy to open, very comfortable keyboard for standard typing. can use on lap without discomfort despite footprint because it's light. solid state drive is big enough for my use. battery life is good, not great. found a good solution is to have a plug for work and one for home. lasts over four hours (through all but the most horrible meetings) and I only use it in power-saver mode with screen at one step above dim good for indoors. I also have one of those logitech nano receiver mice and not bluetooth.

Good: microsoft office works flawlessly. it benefits from solid state drive more than processor speed. While using skype the processor is pinned at 50-70% (not for graphics intense applications clearly) and doesn't skip a beat even when simultaneously using office programs. at idle processor sits at 1-2%. can even use in bed or propped on pillow since the vents won't get obstructed. whisper quiet. keyboard with firm tactile response. snappy in-and-out of sleep mode a function of the solid-state drive. Hinge is firm enough that I prop screen at comfortable viewing angles without losing the solid feel of the laptop.

needs improvement: battery difficult to change. no backlit keyboard (I had read there was one). function keys are flush with keyboard but still pretty easy to use. mouse pad is very sensitive and thumb intermittently hits it while typing, which can be distracting. no fingerprint reader. facial recognition was not good for me even after a week of training, so it's un-installed.

haven't tried: external monitor but works well with usb projector. on plane but there is no reason it wouldn't work on a food tray.

overall no surprises (except missing backlit keyboard) and plenty to like. It's not a game machine, and it's more than a netbook. the greatest feature is the carry-ability. battery life better than expected based on the reviews. As noted elsewhere, it's not available from dell anymore ("end of life" is what they told me). It's a "premium price for last years hardware" but frankly, the laptop I used was three years old and bulky. even last year's technology is still very good. I'd suggest not getting it as a "toy" but as a quick to pop open full featured laptop to use for typical office tasks it's tough to beat. The form, in this case, is what I paid for and there were fewer, and more minor, compromises than I was expecting.

UPDATE: almost one year later :)

still my favorite machine, by far. did not upgrade to office 2010 because office 2007 opens much more quickly. Sadly my 2 year old dragged the computer off the table a couple of times onto a tile floor and the bottom corners bent and cracked. The machine still works flawlessly, but now the battery area and bottom corners are covered with duct tape. Installed Mint Linux but windows 7 is still so snappy that I never use it. Have been looking at the new ultra-books but still haven't found one that draws my attention away from this device. Again: not a gaming computer but a fantastic office/travel computer. windows 7 and office 2007 make for an almost instant-on and fully functioning computer environment. My desire for cutting edge keeps me looking for upgrades, but so-far haven't found a match for the form/function.

The seller lied to me. This product was not slightly used. It was never used and good as new. Still in all the plastic and packaging. The product is perfect and works like a dream. I saved 50% without getting 50% of the quality. I'm one happy man!

ONE YEAR LATER

This computer is amazing! One year later it still works perfectly and seems to improve over time. The screen is great and the controls are perfect. Dell should have continued making this baby. I wish that they would make it again, I'd buy another one. I'm in love.

Not to mention all of the attention this thing gets. It's hard to believe that it was made back in 2009. I get stopped all the time and asked about it. And the Apple people in coffee shops hate me because my computer gets way more attention from others.

I love it! I can't imagine replacing this thing. If I could just upgrade the RAM and processor and graphics card I'd keep the shell forever.

Acquired this notebook from the Microsoft Store in Scottsdale, AZ and was very happy with the setup and initial performance. Didn't have success, tho, with an external USB DVD player purchased with it. Ended up ordering a (expensive!) DVD/Blu-Ray player for the Adamo direct from Dell and it works great...just one USB port required. Also purchased an extended life battery through Dell....which brings me to the one big complaint I have with this machine. So I now have two batteries to use with this notebook, but it is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to swap the battery out. Seems simple...there's a typical slider on the bottom to supposedly release the battery, but it won't come out... I see that the design of the case is such that the battery doesn't slide off towards the back of the machine, but needs to pop outward, but I still can't get it. I ended up handing it to my son and asked him to give it a try....he was FINALLY successful, but I have no idea how. The larger battery is now installed, but it won't seem to budge when trying to remove. I have found several references on the 'net that the battery is "difficult to remove" on this system, but nobody offers any helpful hints as to HOW to remove the darn battery.

Does anyone that has one of these Adamo XPS machines have any advice or little trick on how to get the battery changed? Supposedly one of the features is that you can hot-swap the battery while it's in sleep mode and not miss a beat -as long as you do it within 90 seconds. If it takes 10 minutes to struggle with the battery to get it removed, I guess that feature isn't worth much.

Again...love the system, but can anyone help with the battery removal issue?

This laptop is all about preferences, u need to know what u want & for how much. I looked everywhere in the market for an ultra portable laptop, that is not a netbook & that is not apple...I didn't care if it has the quadro-hexa-octa cores! after all, am not a gamer nor an engineer who needs to use heavy programs, at around $1000 with 3 years warranty this laptop was the best i could find!

At 1st u need to know that u re paying a big sum of money on the design here..so don't just compare this to similar-specs laptop then whine about the price! The ultra slim & still the world slimmest laptop running windows looks just great & different, i had a Studio XPS M1330 that looked really nice & compact & was for around the same price 2 years ago (around $1000)but doesn't come even near to how nice the Adamo XPS looks. It does have a kinda large footprint, that doesn't bother me, but u need to consider a fact that when closed this looked more like a 14.5" lappy, yet so slim & sexy that everybody will be envying u at the coffee house!

So as for the look this takes 20/10 ( IMO ) if not more! Why the 4 stars? I took out 1 star mainly cos of the awkward battery life of 90 mins on regular settings with the regular battery. Even if the extended batteries gives more than 4 hours, it will also be 4 stars cos i have to pay $120 at the Dell's website to get it!

The performance is amazing and certainly surprised me. I installed all the programs i need & this laptop is at the same speed ( probably due to the SSD) as my XPS 14 ( which i later on sold since i didn't need it anymore). I am talking about the regular things for my everyday life, so am not sure how will it perform on other specific programs. This lappy runs windows live ( the messenger, the mail & everything), iTunes, Microsoft word & steam ( gaming software that is really heavy!) with NO SWEAT! even when i play games with all the programs running, this thing runs really smooth, older games ofcourse like C&C Red Alert 3 or Need for speed undercover ( the NFS looks less impressive on this one than on my XPS 14 of course, mainly because of the video card, but nothing that prevents me from occasional playing, a little compromise that i was willing to take to get this awesome look!)

The Solid State Drive is really impressive, though the once 15 seconds is now around 30 because of all the programs installed (i am blaming steam, since booting was much faster before its installation)

So the looks is awesome, the performance is really great for everyday life even with a relatively older core 2 duo processor, the LCD display is really impressive as well as the really quick SSD..if u r looking to spend around a $1000 ( even less if you check the Dell outlet website, u can get a refurb for around $800) for an everyday laptop that looks really different & impressive with almost no compromises on performance then this laptop is for u..

What u need to consider before buying is whether u r willing to spend another $120 for the extended battery or stay hooked to the outlet most of the time. Also u need to consider the rather small 128 GB SSD, i have around 100 GBs of pictures ( i keep all my pics since i got my first digital camera!) & even though i have an external hard drive, i would have preferred to keep all of them on hand, instead i had to choose some ( around 70 GB) to leave more space on the drive...still not keeping me from enjoying this laptop....hope this review helps!

HP G62-219WM Laptop PC with Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4500 Processor & Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit EditionEXCELENTE CONDICIONES MAS DE LO QUE ESPERÁBAMOS Y UNA MAQUINA MUY POTENTE. LA RECOMENDAMOS 100%. Y LA TIENDA MUY RESPONSABLE

I would have given this purchase a four or five star rating EXCEPT for the deceptive way the Warranty Support section dealt with what I thought was a rather simple request for a copy of the Windows 7 media. The refurbished HP laptop has been reliable to this point, i.e., March, 2012 some four months later. The first thing I do when I get a laptop is take an image of the disk so I can restore the system later WHEN a virus takes the machine down or just to refresh the system. When I tried to restore the system, however, it required the Windows 7 media which was not delivered with the laptop. I contacted ComputerLand Customer Support for the first time December 12, 2011, just a week or so after the laptop was delivered. Kudos to the customer support line as I always got in touch with a real person right off the bat and they routed me right into the technical support section. Joshua was the individual I dealt with most of the time and he assured me that the media would be delivered in a week or so. It is now March 11 and I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate that I had to purchase. From December 12 into February I got story after story from Joshua. First he was waiting on corporate to approve the purchase and would buy it himself if that didn't come through. HE indicated they don't usually deliver the media because of piracy issues. Hmmm. But I kept getting told they would get it to me. Finally, around the February 1 time frame I escalated the call to Joshua's manager. Joshua seemed a nice guy who genuinely wanted to help. His manager I'm not so sure about. I had just about had it with the back and forth at that point and it took about two conversations with this character to come to the realization they were intentionally deceiving me about ever delivering the Windows 7 media. They had no intention actually doing so and had never intended to. They had hoped that I would just give up after a while which I did after telling Joshua's manager on the phone that he was a bald faced liar and deserved to have a one star rating up on Amazon and be reported to the Better Business Bureau. Comments to which he had no reply. Here's the one star rating. A call to the BBB goes in this week. Again, the hardware is still holding up (fingers crossed) and if ComputerLand support had just been honest they would probably have gotten four stars but they lied.

Acer Aspire One AO756-2641 11.6-Inch Laptop (Ash Black)

Acer Aspire One AO756-2641 11.6-Inch LaptopI purchase this after getting a used acer 10.1" netbook and found the keyboard to small to do any real typing on it. This netbook has a fantastic 11.6" display that gives sharp video playback. The keyboard is good size and allows for easy typing. The weight and size make it very easy to carry around. On the negative side I wish the battery held a better charge and the touchpad can be a little over sensitive. I ended up getting a wireless mouse which solve my problem with the touchpad which I think is more me than the netbook. I have my netbook set up to dual boot into Windows 8 & Linux Mint 13. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

I wouldn't call it the most sophisticated tech I ever bought, but after downloading Microsoft Office Home and Student (purchased separately), it's an affordable option that meets my needs. I think that's the key to any technology purchase--know your needs. Mine are emailing, writing, research, surfing, shopping, socializing, and other pretty low-level uses. If these are your needs as well, this is the machine for you.

Buy Acer Aspire One AO756-2641 11.6-Inch Laptop (Ash Black) Now

This compact computer is efficient for simple needs such as surfing, letters, blogging and a few hidden games/solitaire. I love the color (Red) and how lightweight it is. I loaded StarOffice (thanks amazon) as not to purchase another expensive license. Star office is compatible with all office programs and it works similar to office XP (good enough for me). I digress, battery life is efficient for me and my needs. I purchased my system through Wal-Mart during a sale for $198.00 which is what I think this system is worth. Not good for high powered games or extensive wear and tear. Further, I hate Windows 8 who tested that thing. Its awful and after experiencing it on this computer, I'm definitely not upgrading even if they gave it to me for free. In addition, I agree with the mouse pad being sensitive and did exactly what another rater did, purchased a mouse and disabled it. It's a little slow to start and shut down hopefully, upgrading memory will help that.

All in all, I like my system. I took a star for Windows 8 hated it...

I like this laptop. The new windows 8 is really difficult to navigate but acer gives you the option of the acer desktop which is what non-windows 8 users are used to. it is light, quick and compact and is perfect for blogging and drafting documents. A good buy and worth the money.

I am giving this little guy 5 stars because it has been performing for me in every way I need it to. I was in search of an inexpensive, small laptop to do some light web surfing/research and word processing. In the week that I've had it, I am very pleased!

The first thing I did after booting up the netbook (to make sure everything loaded up okay), was install more RAM ordered from the Crucial website, because they guarantee the correct size for your machine. This netbook only comes with 2 GB of RAM, which I was afraid wouldn't quite be enough to handle my multi-tasking. There is one 2 GB stick in one slot, and there is another slot that is empty. I upgraded to the max amount of 8 GB with two 4 GB sticks. The bottom plate was relatively easy to remove and the slots are there in the center, plain as day. I believe this will allow the netbook to run at its best.

The processor is weak, so boot up, shut down, and opening programs is going to take slightly longer than you're used to if you've been working on a newer desktop with a big, shiny processor. I don't need a super fast processor to play Diablo on this thing, so I can wait an extra second for load time. It doesn't bother me, because I expected it.

I am very pleased with the size of the screen and the keyboard it feels almost like 100% of a regular keyboard. (I think maybe it's 92%? Not sure.) Sound quality and video playback from YouTube videos have been satisfactory. Not mind blowing, but no glitches either. Some reviewers have commented on the poor sound quality, but I don't have an issue with it.

On the negative, there are 3 issues:

1. The top of the machine has a shiny, glossy surface which is pretty, but attracts my grubby fingerprints like the dickens. But that's merely aesthetic, and the box comes with a cleaning cloth.

2. I have been having recurring issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks. I usually need to run the troubleshooting app to fix it, and then all is well. This, of course, may be due to my own lack of knowledge regarding IP's and network configurations, etc.

3. Personally, I have found that the battery will last me only about 3.5 hours on average. This is a bit shorter than I'd like, but still functional.

Overall, I think this netbook is a perfect fit for anyone with needs similar to mine word processing, web surfing, and an inexpensive machine that travels well. I highly recommend it.

All in all, it is a decent computer that will last for a while, but is prone to overheating and will only last 18-24 months before needed to be replaced.

I have this laptop for over a year now. It does a decent work and the performance is good for the price range. Unfortunately, it broke down recently and won't turn on anymore. It's one month out of warranty and HP wants a hefty repair cost for a burned motherboard. Can't justify to throw more money at a bad product.

HP dv7-6c80us (17.3-Inch Screen) Laptop

HP dv7-6c80us LaptopOn black Friday, I purchased a HP dv7 from staples. The specs are very similar (My laptop has less ram and memory, other than that they are exactly the same).

I believe that this laptop is excellent. I have been using it for work daily for 6 months and am very happy with its maintenance of power and design. The 17..3 in. display is certainly not portable but excellent to view and thus capable of often watching movies on it. As far as aesthetics continue, the laptop features a brilliant chrome siding that truly captures the elegance of the laptop. I have taken the laptop on short journey's and found that its battery life is exactly as described. Even on high performance settings, the laptop can easily get 6 hours worth of battery life.

Beats audio fitted the laptop with top-of-the-line speakers that can compete with even bose or sony independent units. The computer is fast and has shown no major defects overtime. I run many programs on the computer and so far I have face no problems with anything. The graphics are excellent and the speed and battery life doesn't deteriorate quickly. It is a sturdy and good quality laptop.

Overall, I would recommend this laptop for all ages and all fields(except portability, but even there, it is sturdy and has a good battery life).

This machine has all the right stuff, widi, usb3.0 I7 2nd gen and a second bay for a solid state hard drive if you want to add it. Sadly it is only $849 at the HP web site or I would've bought it at my favorite site, Amazon!

While I will spend some time on the disadvantages of this computer, I must say there aren't many and I love it and am glad I bought it.

This review, and also this computer, is really for power users. Most of you don't need a computer like this... you can get away with a perfectly good computer much cheaper.

Bought this at Fry's in Jan 2012. It's a quad-core i7-2670QM running at 2.2GHz with 8GB of RAM. Not sure of the exact speed of the RAM but Crucial's memory scanner pegs it at either PC3-10600 or PC3-12800. I run some pretty memory intensive apps, and while this computer can be upgraded to 16GB, I haven't felt the need. At the time of this review (10/13/2012) upgrading the memory would be $80 +$20 depending on how well you shop. It does have the Intel 3000 graphics built in with a minimum allocation of 64MB of RAM and a max of 1696MB (64MB Dedicated + Shared)

My WEI with my SSD installed (not included with this purchase) is 6.3. I don't quite know what it is without, I assume it was 5.9.

Everything on this computer worked fine out of the box, however, I'm not a fan of bloatware and HP has plenty of it. So I reinstalled Windows 7 with a copy of Win 7 I had on DVD and using the key from the bottom of the machine, it worked. BTW, most of you know this, but most computers now do not come with restore CDs, but I think HP has one for $20. I'm not too worried about getting one from them. Go to their support website before you buy if this is something you need.

One hardware modification I made was I got rid of the 5400 RPM WD 750GB drive and replaced it with a paltry 60GB 2.5 SSD from OCZ that I used in a previous computer. This makes Windows 7 screaming fast, but doesn't allow for a lot of room to install things... and here's where my first complaint comes in.

You have two drive bays for HD/SSD but good luck finding a second caddy/cable for it. And when you find one, it's going to have to be a long cable (about the width of your keyboard) to reach the connector near the first HD/SSD.

Intel Wireless Display is AWESOME. I bought a Netgear Wi-Di box and hooked it up to my TV. I can even play a show from Hulu or Netflix and get no audio or video lag.

I don't play games on it, so I can't tell you how it would do with World of Warcraft or anything like that. I presume it's neither great or bad, but that's a guess.

It's shiny and easy to get dirty. I found the fingerprint scanner to be useless, but that's because I did a fresh install of Windows. HP's support site is good for finding drivers though, but not that particular one.

Battery life... I get 6-8 hours EASY on this thing and I'll bet I can get 10 if I ever let it "die" as opposed to plugging it in at 10%. Makes going to Starbuck's much easier. :)

Wi-Fi seems to be good/strong/powerful. Haven't really tried the Bluetooth, so I can't comment on that. I also don't have any USB 3.0 specific devices yet, but the ports are plentiful... they aren't well spaces...so if you have a "fatter" USB drive (like my older SanDisk) that you need to plug in, you might have a conflict.

Sound is surprisingly good. Display at 1600 x 900 is crisp and clear. Getting the back cover off is a pain, until you realize the only tool you need is a flathead screwdriver or butter knife. Be gentle, though.

Blu-Ray player, but no Blu-Ray software. Be prepared to shell out for that. I haven't really tried it yet.

What else to say... I love it.

Generally, this HP laptop works fine. When the product info speaks about the Dr. Dre sound system, one would expect quite a "poppin" sound.

However, the volume is nowhere near what it should be. I have adjusted to the maximum everything that I can think of and, even using earphones, I am having difficulty in hearing the movies that I have played or the Youtube videos online.

I also wish I had purchased a laptop with a separate video card instead of the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated system.

HP Pavilion dv6-3210us 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC - SilverOverall a great laptop for the price. It's fast with good wireless, and a crisp, bright screen. Having USB near the power cord leaves one less thing sticking out when using a thumb drive.

As with any low-cost option, there are a few quirks, mostly with the input devices. The Synaptics Clickpad is genuinely annoying, but easy to get used to. No tap zones, so I remapped the left button to a middle-click to get that functionality. The Touchpad Disable Zone keeps the cursor from moving every time you try to click. The keyboard is missing number pad access, even with the Fn key, so no Alt-codes are available.

I have seen this laptop at Staples for some time and waited for it to go down in price. I picked one up for $469 and say it is an excellent buy. It is true that the touchpad is annoying but it is easy to get used to or worst case, get a mouse. For under $600, you can get an AMD phenom dual core CPU (3.0 GhZ, 2mb L2 cache) along with a decent integrated graphics card (ATI Radeon 4250). Has 4GB DDR3 RAM and a 500GB hdd. The webcam is decent for a built-in unit and the DVD burner is standard.

Look, I work on PCs and I ran benchmark tests on this PC and it outperforms mobile Intel i3 and even certain i5 processors with a better graphics card.

tested it out, and found out that almost every major game can be played on this PC. This can play anything from Civ V to Mass Effect 2 & KOTOR. For integrated graphics, it is above average.

Overall, this is a great laptop with many features. Good for making/editing videos, multi-tasking, listening to music, editing photos, watching HD video, and playing mainstream games.

*UPDATE*

I just upgraded it to 8GB of RAM. Does it need it? No. I did it because I could and it made things much better. I quickly became used to the touchpad and it runs fine. The only negative I see is that the plastic housing is a little loose on the front right corner. I'll keep an eye on it but other than that it's great.

bought this a couple of days ago and it's an excellent for it's price range. it's fast and quiet and nice and bright screen. yes, the touchpad is touchy but we're planning on getting a wireless mouse for it anyways since we've never liked touchpads in general. plus right now hp is offering 50 dollars mail-in rebate until june 2011 which makes this even sweeter.

I have owned this laptop for several weeks now. I purchased a wireless mouse to use with it and it works great! (I never liked using the built-in pad) This laptop replaces an older Toshiba that was a great laptop. This one is faster, lighter, and thinner. The sound is very good for a laptop. My only complaint is that the screen has no contrast adjustment and when I got it the picture quality was poor.(surprising to me since this is billed as an "entertainment" laptop) And yes, I checked the resolution, etc. Everything looked kind of washed out, and not at all clear. I was ready to return it. But now, after going through the whole color adjustment process (see owners manual) the picture is a lot better but still not great (my old toshiba had a better picture from day 1). But I am keeping it for its' good qualities! It's a good laptop for ~ $500, and will hopefully last a while!

Gigabyte Laptop P2542G-CF2 15.6-Inch Laptop

Gigabyte Laptop P2542G-CF2 15.6-Inch LaptopLoving it so far. Came with windows 8, so I had to remove that nonsense. Added a 500gb ssd (samsung 840) and this thing flies. Now if I only can find a proper skin for it.

Had been looking for a laptop that fit my needs for a while, this happened to be it. Windows 8 is a bit lame but it's functional and doesn't really need to be changed.

Alienware M17x R4 AM17xR4-11053BK 17.3-Inch Laptop (Stealth Black with Soft Touch Finish)

Alienware M17x R4 AM17xR4-11053BK 17.3-Inch Laptop**This review was originally written for the M17xr4 with 7970m graphics, 1600x900 screen, i7 3610m processor, and 6gb RAM, 750gb 7200rpm HD which, i own. That being said, the rest is the same and the processor difference is very, very minimal since the 3630 is simply the "refresh" of the 3610, and NOT a new generation of processor. Anything marked** may not apply to the model you have purchased.

Now, on to the review. I will try to give an unbiased opinion as I have done months and months of research, comparing and contrasting every modern gaming laptop. This review will be fairly in depth (Should be for a $1800+ laptop), and I will try to be detailed, but also universal in describing details, so that you don't have to know any extreme technical jargon to understand the review as well as giving an up-to-date one. Enough said.

The Build:

First things first the build quality is excellent, and this will be the first thing you notice as you un-box and remove it from its protective casing. I researched for months on purchasing a high-end/Gaming computer, and i have learned very much about numerous modern gaming computers and components. Most of the reviews on amazon and on review websites have stated its build quality is of the highest grade and that it is one of the biggest selling points for this laptop, and for good reason. The laptop feels solid, secured, and a bit heavy (weighs in at about 9.5lbs). In my opinion, not overweight considering the amount of components stuffed into this thing. The rubbery matte texture compliments it's sturdiness well, and to me was a great material choice for this laptop as it resists fingerprints rather well and will not show scratches as aluminum or plastic will. Not to mention keeping the laptop light, and relatively cool. I dare you to find a better looking laptop (my opinion) that is more sleek and with better build quality (not opinion) than this one. The reason i put up with the weight over say a Sager NP9170 is that this M17xr4 is the thinnest 17inch gaming laptop with these components i could find. I'll take thinner to lighter any day considering, i will be hauling this in a excellent backpack (Everki Beacon or swiss gear) Where the 1 to 2 pound gain over the NP9170 will not be noticeable. Your port selection is numerous and above average, even for gaming laptops. 4 USB 3.0 ports (2 on the left, 2 on your other left), 1 USB 2.0/Esata combo (right) which is also a sleep and charge port which does just that (allows you to charge your phone, iPod or usb charging device while the laptop is asleep or even completely off). VGA, HDMI and Display port video outs (all left), 2 headphone jacks, 1 mic input, as well as an SPDIF optical out (All left). One cool feature is that the Soundcard software included can be used to configure the audio ports to do anything, For example configure all 4 ports to be headphone jacks, or 2 line -in ports. An HDMI-in (right) (not existent in any other laptop I could find. Trust me, I looked. More on this in "other features" below). Last but not least a 9 in 1 card reader above the optical drive (right) and a Kensington lock (left). The cooling system is well engineered with 3 intakes on the bottom, and 2 exhausts on the back, the left one being for the processor, and the right being for the graphics card. I can't tell you how nice it is having the exhaust shoot out the back instead of the bottom into your lap. You might think you lap will block the intakes but they are almost designed with a peak and valley structure, to allow lap use without block to the intakes. Don't get me wrong this laptop can get warm on the bottom especially during gaming, but it is rare I game on my lap. And when using a laptop pad or cooling pad, you won't notice it at all . The individual laptop exhausts are nice, first they limit noise to 1 fan most of the time, secondly they are effective and accurate at temp detection (i.e. Gaming, the GPU fan ramps up, Heavy app use or multitasking the CPU fan ramps up) not to mention the entire system is silent during basic and medium use.

Components:

I will go into greater detail of the components i have added separately or replaced later in the review. For now, the components it comes with. First off the processor, The Intel i7 3630m is the baseline mobile model for i7 cores in laptops. It is snappy, and has no problem devouring numerous tasks at a time. For gaming an i7 core IS MORE than enough considering most games don't utilize 4 cores to begin with (exception: Farcry 3). In fact you would do just fine for gaming if this laptop had an i5 core and you would not notice a frame rate difference.

**On to the Graphics, this laptop uses a combination of AMD Radeon 7970m ( Nvidia 675m on this model) discrete or dedicated card, in concurrence with an Intel HD 4000 integrated chip. First the 7970m, this is a nasty card that destroys most any game, modern or old. You can comment on this review, and I can test a game you might want me to play and let you know how it preforms. To name a few recent ones it preforms extremely well with that I have played. Black ops 2 (not very difficult for any machine), Battlefield 3 run great maxed out, Arkham city runs great, Farcry 3 runs insane on this laptop due to its great scaling on all 4 processor cores (all though I have had some crashes with this game). I've even played as recent as the Crysis 3 beta which runs great since the new drivers update. I cannot stress this enough, the ability to play such high-end games with such good results, all on-the-go, is a crazy feat to me. I run this laptop to a 27 inch monitor most of the time and it's hard to believe the graphics are coming from my laptop and not a desktop. Comparing it to the GTX 680m recently released by Nvidia, the 7970m in my opinion is on par with it, and even runs certain games better according to benchmarks. That being said in power consumption and cooling is better with the 680m. The biggest difference is the price. When I looked to configure my laptop on Dell or Xotic PC, the price difference is over $350 which is simply not justifiable, even for a Nvidia fan boy. I knew and researched both the 680m, 7970m before I even wanted to purchase here, so seeing that amazon had the 7970, it only pushed me further to buy here. Intel HD 4000 is simply an integrated graphics chip which is used for anything but high-end games and uses MUCH less power. Heck, it will even run older games or less resource hogging ones great. AMD uses "Enduro" technology to switch between the 2 graphics solutions based upon your power source (battery or plugged in) and application (Video game vs. Google chrome) this all can be configured manually, but by default your computer switches to the Intel HD 4000 when on battery power EVEN if you are trying to run a high-end game. But like I said, this can be changed manually with a combination of power and graphics setting changes. All that being said, the drivers are a bit faulty, especially with windows 8. I could not decide whether to install AMD's drivers for the 7970m from their website or Dell's which seemed outdated. I spoke to a few Alienware techs on this issue. All said that it is preferable to use Dell's drivers, but AMD's should be compatible. I noticed some performance loss using Dell's driver version, so I cleared the drivers completely and installed AMD's 13.2 version which had updates for the Crysis 3 beta.

* For your hardrive and standard 7200rpm Seagate 750gb drive. Nothing special here. See my upgrade.

* For RAM you got 6gb** (8gb on this model) of 1600mhz DDR3 ram in one 4gb stick and one 2 gb stick** (2x4 probably on this model). Fine amount of Ram,I was going to upgrade anyways so I didn't care.

* Wi-Fi card is an Intel Centrino 2230, great reception, great speeds wireless N as well as 2.4ghz/5.8ghz bands. Not much else to say

* Standard DVD/CDRW that is a slot-load drive. I happen to prefer slot-load over tray load because: one, sleeker looking, and 2 no worrying about having a clumsy tray slide out and hit something, getting stuck, breaking, etc.

* For your sound card you get a SoundBlaster Recon3Di instead of a basic sound card, paired with a pair of Klipsch speakers, it sounds great. Where it really shines is when you hook this laptop up via optical or analog (stereo out) and tweak settings in the SoundBlaster control panel. I found the Rock preset to improve the sound even more. This excellent sound card is a rare and welcome addition to a gaming laptop. The speakers definitely aren't booming loud, but they are crisp, clean and have decent bass and are plenty loud for nearly any use. I think they could have used a slight volume boost in playing music, but with laptop speakers, it's tough considering power provided and space to put them in. The speakers are definitely above average and much better sounding than Sager or MSI laptops alike.

**(This laptop does have the 1920x1080 Full HD Screen)

The screen as stated before is 1600x900**, decent colors, so-so viewing angle. Before you write this laptop off for the screen resolution, consider these two things. First, at only 17 inches (yes only) you won't see a ginormous difference between 1920x1080, and 1600x900. You will probably see it. But is it worth 200 dollars extra upgrade? Your call. Secondly, I personally route to a 27 inch monitor for gaming which I display 1920x1080 on. If your majority, or even part of your use is to an external monitor: just another reason you don't need 1080p on the actual laptop screen.

Personal Experience/Other selling points/Tips

**The 3 largest selling points that had me choose this laptop over the Samsung series 7 gamer, MSI GT70, and the Sager NP9170 (in my opinion its top competitors) was first, the powerful graphics card which beats the 675m and lower cards (670m, 660m, etc.) by a large amount. I was aware of the driver issues with the 7970m but I decided to take the risk, trusting they will be updated (and they have and will continue to be).

Secondly, the slim profile of this laptop. It beats all 3 mentioned AND has more powerful components. Now this laptop is nowhere near thin at about 1.98 inches but its as thin as its going to get for these components. You want super thin? Razer blade is $2599, and you get less powerful components than this laptop, but the razer blade is super portable (6lb,.88 inches thick).

Thirdly, the icing on the cake for me (it might seem strange) the HDMI-input port. Why? The simple fact that being able to hook a console, Blu-ray player, or nearly any device to use this laptop, solely for use of its screen, is genius. Now I understand that some people do not have use for this feature because they do not own consoles or any form of device to utilize this feature and those that could have use for it might say, "Why would you want to hook a console-a less-powerful system--up to the screen of a more powerful system" well I personally have many friends on console and we often have "system link parties" the idea that my laptop could serve as a screen instead of having to haul a TV or monitor to play on is awesome. Not to mention you feel as if you have full control over your laptop to do as you choose and knowing that by the time the computer gets outdated (not for many, many years), you could still always use it as a screen! I have used it with my Xbox 360 and it is excellent, just the right size, and the Xbox's sound even routes right through the HDMI and out the laptops speakers (HDMI carries audio and video). It was a huge selling point for me and NO OTHER laptop has one of these that I have found.

Another minor cool feature I like is the speaker placement. Since I do use this on an external monitor I prefer to shut the laptop screen when doing that. This might not matter to most, but for me, when I do shut it and just prefer to use the excellent speakers on the laptop it will not block the sound. Why? The speakers on are the front of the laptop (the colored, grill looking things). With most laptops you have a sound bar near the media controls and if you were to shut the screen the speakers would get blocked. Being able to use the speakers with the screen closed is a cool feature for me.

Another selling point for me personally, is it came with components that are hard to upgrade in a laptop that I wanted (7970m graphics**, i7 processor) and nothing I didn't want (6gb ram**, basic HDD). The laptop's accessibility is great. Pop the battery out, unscrew 2 screws, and you're in to most of the system. 2 of the 4 ram bays, HDD bay --which it has 2 of by the way--, fans, even your graphics and your processor can be seen. Again Alienware is giving you nearly full control of the system. Even the Wi-Fi card, other ram bays and optical drive are accessed through a little further, but not too difficult dis-assembly.

Here are the upgrades I have chosen and installed myself easily:

-Samsung 840 250gb SSD (purchased from Newegg for $150 with Farcry 3 Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch) an SSD is said to be the single best system upgrade you can make that will grant you the most noticeable performance boost to your system. And after installing one myself, I am a firm believer in just that. Honestly with processors so fast these days your limiting factor comes down to your HDD and good ol' disc drives can only spin to access data so fast. I would even go as far as to say if you don't get an SSD you're missing out on a chunk of your system's performance especially with a processor such as the i7 3610m. Not to mention SSD's silent, cooler, more reliable, and less power consuming operation than traditional HDD's as well as SSD prices dropping like crazy and 1 open bay in this laptop, what have you got to lose? Unleash your processor!

-16gb Corsair vengeance laptop RAM (purchased from amazon for $84.99 Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)) I wanted more than 6gb of ram and if you go higher than 16gb its near impossible to stress it. This RAM had great reviews, fast speeds and seems reliable.

-Killer Wireless N 1202, Faster 2.4/5.8 ghz speeds.

-Windows 7 professional OEM (purchased on amazon for $102) I had a feeling I would not care for windows 8 (and I did not that much, not to mention the drivers for the 7970m are nearly unusable on win 8). Bought this fresh OEM copy at a steal price, popped in my new SSD did a fresh install, Used "Sean's Windows 7 installation guide for SSD's" Which you MUST checkout if you do similar configuration as I, with the hard drives. I then formatted my original 750 GB HDD to use for storage space, and boom. My system flies with cold boot times under 18 seconds, and massive amount of storage space. In the future I will definitely move to windows 8 once graphics drivers are updated and the OS becomes more stable. But for now, it's windows 7 professional for me. Your system didn't include Windows 8 recovery disks for when you want to upgrade? No problem. Call up Alienware, and they will 2-day ship you your recovery media on a handy, dandy flash drive.

-One of the many accessories I suggest for this laptop is the U3 Coolmaster cooling pad Cooler Master NotePal U3 Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80mm Fans (R9-NBC-8PCK-GP). The reason I liked this for my desk set-up is it seems of good material mostly aluminum which is naturally cool without fans! It uses USB power, fits the M17xr4 perfectly, and the fans are even movable, and Removable. I lined all 3 fans up directly with my m17x's, 3 intake vents which really keeps this thing cool. You do not need a cooling pad, just a personal choice for me! A cool system, is a happy system. The compatibility with my system made this one a winner for me, but I do use it as a stationary "dock" at desk, it's really too big to lug around. For more accessory suggestions, Comment!

-Personally I use this laptop for school, web browsing/multitasking, high-end gaming, and a screen for my Xbox . Even though it is heavy, and many will say it is only a desktop replacement. It is still portable and I have no problem using this computer around the house, on my lap, or "docked" at my desk.

For purchasing locations I would suggest either here or Xoticpc.com. I chose here mostly because of the standard price and the partial refund I receive for the screen mess-up issue.

I do highly suggest this laptop, and encourage you to research more sites for yourself to see if it will fit your uses. I only wish it took me less than 3 months to figure that out. But at such a high price I wanted to be 110% sure this was the one I wanted.

Please feel absolutely free to comment with any at all questions, regarding why I chose the upgrades I did, or anything on the system I didn't touch on well enough, Specific Game performance, purchasing options, how to configure anything, component or accessory suggestions, or other laptop comparisons. I will do my absolute best to get back to you. Also let me know anywhere to improve on the review besides grammar (after a few pages I gave up ;). I will update this review with new info, and corrections.

You have reached the end, congrats and thank you for your time if you have stuck with me, and if you did not stick with it, Hey, I don't blame your skimming.

Thanks again.

Pros:

Very fast and no bugs so far

Cool design, backlight of keyboard and some other elements, and rubberized "palm rest" area near keyboard (looks and feels really cool, but it is also fingerprint magnet)

Looks very sturdy

Cons:

Only keyboard backlight can be dimmed whereas other elements are very bright for me, still hope to find a workaround; backlight control software works not very reliably (and UI is not quite user friendly) but good enough.

Pro: Really fast and beautiful laptop. It is just little bit heavy.

Long battery life when switch to GPU inside the i7 CPU, so it can support mobile office work.

Original SSD is not a nice one, but it is acceptable for this price.

Con: WIndows 8 is not well done OS, after 2 month usage, the apps of start screen cannot launch. OS did not support any problem information, so it cannot be fixed.

Lenovo 59012696 IdeaPad Y510-1 15.4' NotebookThis lenovo pc its great, it has a lot of features wich include a megapixel camera wieth face recognition software dolby home theater great wich bring great sound and bass ( it has a subwoofer)for a laptop. Im so in love with this computer it works just fine. the design is awesome and unique the cover texture wont leave any figer prints it feels and looks awesome. for your everyday work its a wonderfull computer it might not be the latest pc for gaming but it does come with a lot under the hood. great value great price and it just looks awesome highly recommend it.

Keyboard keys are in weird places. Fn key is in where usually ctl key is. Eventhough it has a full size keyboard you have to use function key to type certain commonly used keys like home, end which is very annoying. I find typing with this laptop very hard. Finally you cannot upgrade any component other than memory in this laptop. Mine came with Intel 3945ABG wifi and want to replace with 4965AGN card found a good deal over the internet. After the upgrade the laptop BIOS catchup saying non lenovo item found and wont boot at all. Moreover lenovo is not selling this card and lenovo branded card cost you a fortune. If this laptop is not under warranty anything happens to it forget it you have to throw it out. My Dell laptop few things went wrong after warranty I replaced the components with bargain price and this I have to trash if I have any problem. I already replaced keyboard under warrany and the cusomer service insisted me to send the laptop and they will do a through diagnostics that it is not my problem only then they will replace. I don't recommend this laptop and it is good only if you have warranty and definetly not worth for money. Lenovo will lose customers to their competetors until they change their proprietary mentality.

I used this daily for four years, and had no problems with it-at all.

I never had any issues with the hinges, or keys. I have to wonder what people do to their laptops to have so many issues. It is true that I didn't carry it around a whole lot though.

The webcam works great, and comes with easy software. The wireless was quick and powerful. I liked the big orange volume control switch. I had zero problems with the hard disk or OS... zero. No bad sectors, almost never crashed... no freezing or other weirdness. I'd buy another Lenovo.

I bought this laptop in 2008 knowing that I would use it for an engineering program at school. It did and excellent job and helped get me through my degree. In 2010 I upgraded the memory and processor in it to use as a gaming system, as well as updating the OS to Win7. I was impressed to find that the motherboard inside would support an 800MHz bus speed, as opposed to the 667MHz bus speed that the laptop uses natively. All the upgrades went off without a hitch. Most people wind up buying a new laptop rather than trying to upgrade the old one, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had some great upgrade options to help give this laptop a significant performance boost. After the upgrades, I continued to use it as a desktop replacement and it has been excellent the whole time!

I bought a Lenovo Y510 Thinkpad three years ago. As I type one screen hinge is completely broken which has caused the entire screen hinge to separate from the screen. The keyboard is coming apart bit by bit and I have no A key. My hubby warned me about buying a plastic unit but I am quite careful with my equipment so I thought I would have no problem. The repair shop is unable to obtain parts in US so the expense, and time, to get parts from China is both unacceptable and expensive (~$350). The effectiveness of the unit, i.e. performance, ease of use, clarity of screen, etc. is good but heck, if I can't open and close the laptop screen then the other parts mean nothing.

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 12.5" Notebook PC - 2320-A9U

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 12.5' Notebook PC - 2320-A9UI have been using the legendary ThinkPad since the 2005. I had the T43 and then the X301. The X230 is different. The keypad is very good in typing and the buttons give quite a nice feel and sound when tying. Add to this the weight. It is quite light and easy to carry around which helps a lot in doing business away from office. Finnaly the processing power is amazing specially when compared with the light weight. In summary, the power of T43 I had before was great but it was not a portable laptop. The portability of the X301 was great but it went slow soon after I used it. The X230 made the perfect balance.
