I've added a few upgrades after reading some reviews on other models, and found a great combination on the cheap, all from amazon. I'll upload some pictures too. First I added a new wireless card, it wasn't the easiest to find but it added dual band N and bluetooth for under $25 and is a cinch to install. just remember to get the drivers from the intel website for it, they increased my range considerably. Its link is Intel Network 6235AN.HMWWB Centrino WiFi Card Advanced-N 6235 Dual Band Bluetooth Retail Second I added a matched set uf crucial 4 GB ram modules, dont think it really maters wheather or not they are matched or if they will run dual channel but figured what the heck Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 SODIMM 204-Pin Notebook Memory Modules CT2KIT51264BC1339 Lastly I added a crucial M4 128gb SSD, the machine runs fine with a traditional HDD, but starts from sleep almost instantly with the SSD. This isn't my main machine, and honestly is much more useful than my 64gb iPad I paid twice as much for. Adding the SSD takes a little work though. Make the restore usb stick using the acer recovery program first of all. If you want to overprovision the drive is where it gets tricky. SSD's do wear out over time. It will likely outlast two of these little portables, but overprovisioning set some space aside to be used to replace some of the blocks as they wear out. I'm no good with linux but a friend pointed me to a program called Hdat2. It allows you to create a HPA (hidden protected area), BUT you need to boot to it from a disk on a windows machine with standard bios and not UEFI. If you are good with linux you could also do this easily with a bootable distro. Just make sure you get the 7mm version of the drive so it will fit. Still running great, one little issue I personally have with it is the space bar is a little short, I usually space with my right thumb but I have to pay a little more attention not to miss it. As far as a speed I was a little cncerned about the celeron, it seems to be keeping up just fine. I dont think I would attempt to game on it. I would make the recovery discs for them, I just used to USB keys (one has to be at least 16 GB), and tossed them in the box, hopefully I'll never need them.

I'm going to write my initial impressions and update this review as I put it through the paces a little. As far a build quality its a plastic netbook. Its no macbook air, but its also $700 less. The trackpad has a little bit of rattle to it, but isnt bad. the screen is nice, the viewing angle fair with good resolution and no bad pixels (a pet peeve of mine). I wouldn't go any smaller as far as sub-notebooks go in screen size and resolution, I had an 8.9 and 10.1, both were awful. This feels like you could get some work done on it. It great in respect to upgrade-ability. The bottom comes off by just removing one screw and siding off the bottom. This is fantastic! My last netbook required that you remove the keyboard and the clips never went back quite right. I already upgraded the Ram to 8 gig (i had an extra 4 gig module in a drawer) and its much better than atom based models I've had in the past. It looks like it would be an easy upgrade to an SSD and have a great machine on the cheap.

I did have the wireless problem another reviewer had, I updated the driver through device manager and have been good to go since. The trackpad for some reason is set to natural scrolling, which I hate on my mac. You can turn it off but need to dig into the program files a little to find the setting. There is a bunch of crapware to disable, but thats no big surprise.

Overall a really nice value for the money. I wanted something cheap and portable, but not my main machine so it doesn't need to be ultra fast or fancy. Most of my frusterations just stem from Windows 8. It isn't bad per se, actually very innovative, but also has a pretty steep learning curve, making things i used to do intuitively much more difficult. Maybe its the comfort of having the desktop as an option keeps me from fully embracing "metro", I dunno. If you have any questions please comment and I'll do my best to help.

I bought this for a friend whose key requirement was portability, not performance. Even with performance in the back seat, I elected to go with a Celeron based machine as I was concerned an Atom based one lacked the minimum horsepower to make a user happy. The computer showed up with the usual prompt Amazon delivery and seemed in good condition on arrival. That's the last of the "good" statements you'll see. During the initial power up, the machine autonomously shut down. I hadn't paid too much attention up until that time as my friend was certainly capable of running through the new user initialization screens. After a second shutdown, I became more involved. It made it through to the desktop on the third try and I assumed it was some sort of learning curve issue until it instantly closed out of Windows 8 while doing essentially nothing. At this time, it wouldn't even boot properly and shutdown before hitting the windows screen. The second attempt brought up a screen asking about whether to try correcting Windows. Figuring there was certainly something wrong, it seemed reasonable to say, "Yes" and it went though it's correction routines. We were then able to get it to boot properly. Again I made the assumption the problems were Windows based and transient in nature. After downloading Skype, I was talking to my son when the machine shut off, instantly. Like the other times, this wasn't an orderly shutdown but rather as if someone had just pulled the plug (yes, this is a laptop but you get the drift. For what it's worth, the configuration for the first couple of boot attempts were on the battery which was fully charged but after that, I plugged the machine in to ensure there wasn't some sort of battery issue). We did another start and this time it stayed up for about 15 minutes. Two more shutdowns and I hit the Amazon return button.

I wanted to like this machine because if it had worked, it would have been an ideal machine for its intended use. The screen was certainly adequate and while the keyboard was small for my hands, I'm sure a person could get used to touch typing on it. Two USB ports allowed me to hook a portable DVD drive to it and it read and installed software fine. Unfortunately, there was a quality (or design) problem. I did an internet search for Windows 8 autonomous shutdowns and didn't find any results so it appears to be on the hardware side. When I ordered I was concerned about Acer quality and in this instance, it appears they cut one too many corners and lost a sale. It's difficult to objectively rate a computer that arrives with a hardware problem. Without the problem I encountered, it might be a great machine so giving a one star rating based on an obviously defective machine is a bit harsh. I'm sure this isn't the typical computer but I felt I couldn't rate it higher than two stars because even though it had potential, Acer quality control wasn't up to preventing defective machines from making it to end users and any buyer needs to be aware of this.

This is a good basic laptop for your basic needs. Its not a gaming laptop nor a machine that will do high end rendering for you. If you surf the web and do your office productivity tasks on it, its quite a nice machine for its price. The only drawback I have is the screen isnt the best quality but its good enough for basic use.

Also people with wifi problems have to just change the power management settings from power save to maximum performace under the advanced settings tab for wifi.

My old netbook Samsung N120-12GW 10.1-Inch White Netbook 6 Cell Battery was finally dying after almost 4 years of flawless service, so it was time to pick out a replacement.

I read tons of reviews and looked at dozens of netbooks until I found this little gem. Order went smoothly and it was on my front door only a couple days later.

Unboxing was easy, battery snapped on and it was loading. This is where my initial disappointment began. WINDOWS 8, what a horrid operating system, and since this is not a touch screen it felt even worse. The tiles are useless, the desktop view is like half of windows 7 without start menu etc. Wireless will intermittently disconnect every few minutes. If you are not going to downgrade this computer to windows 7 (not included) do not buy this!

To make this machine ready to rock, I ordered Corsair 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 1333 MHz (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory (CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9) and Crucial m4 256GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT256M4SSD2

Next up changed bios boot menu from UEFI boot to legacy bios and loaded windows 7 from a Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 DTSE9H/16GBZ on the SSD from crucial. Google Rufus to create bootable flash disk from .iso

With windows 7 no more wireless connection interruptions and load times are great and no more unsightly tiles of windows 8.

The small annoyances that remain are :

Trackpad feels a bit weird.

Keyboard is finicky, especially spacebar.

P.S. If you want a real champ of a netbook, get Acer Aspire One 756 AO756-2617 11.6" Notebook Computer, Intel Celeron 877 1.40GHz, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB HDD, Win 7 Home Premium (Upg. to Win 8 Pro). The processor in that laptop is well worth the price difference.

Pros:

-Intel Celeron 1.1 GHz dual core

-no reason to complain about lack of power since the battery life is already down to 4 hours on idle activity (i.e. less power might be a good thing)

Cons:

-CPU does not have hyperthreading (although dual core is fine by itself..no need for a higher discharge rate in regards to the battery)

-5400 rpm HDD (probably best to upgrade to faster SSD in the long run if you're willing to pay a bit more for the speed)

-spacebar does not register hits if you press the lower edge

-overall the netbook is "different" (I elaborate below as I have never had so much trouble installing Win7/Ubuntu Linux dual boot before)

Here's a small problem and solution guide that lists out the annoyances I ran into while trying to set up Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu Linux dual boot. Problems ran into with Acer Netbook:

1) Cannot enter BIOS (when in UEFI):

Solution: Hold F2 key down (and keep it held) then press the power button

2) Motherboard does not recognize USB flash drive is inserted:

Solution: In BIOS boot settings, switch to legacy mode

3) Ubuntu installer does not see Windows partitions:

Solution: Use FixParts command line tool to delete traces of GPT data

Somehow I still like the netbook due to its power and weight, but had to go through a lot of trouble trying to solve problems. I hope this information helps someone. I sound like a hypocrite saying that since I went through the trouble of avoiding Windows 8, but Windows 8 offers nice features that deserve playing around with and getting used to for the sake of keeping up with modern technological advances. Hints for using Windows 8:

(1) Use the windows key shortcut to travel back and forth between desktop and whatever that other mode is called (I'll call it application panel mode)

(2) When you enter application panel mode, if you start typing, it'll automatically start a search which is convenient

ASUS Republic of Gamers G75VW-AS71 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop

So I noticed some weak reviews for this product and am quite disgusted. I bought this unit from Best Buy and have so far been impressed. I typically am a desktop user, in fact, I normally custom build my own rigs. I was in the market for a laptop, and didn't want to frustrate myself with custom building one so I shopped around a lot. For the price, it will be difficult to beat this machine. The only laptops that will come close (Dell XPS, AlienWare, and MSI) would all likely cost and extra $500-$1000. Every game I have played so far (Portal 2, Skyrim, etc) have ran on ultra settings with extremely great frame rates. Now for the Pros and cons:

Pros: Great heat displacement, it has two large exhaust ports on the backside of the machine. This keeps the heat off of the bottom and allows for "lap-top" computing. Processing speed is amazing. Cost is low, but shop around, I got it at Bust Buy for $200 cheaper (though the build is not exact to this model make your own decisions as to what you need). Back-lit key board is extremely neat. Large vibrant HD screen. Its not loaded down with a bunch of bloatware and demos. GTX 660M is a great GPU for most all (with the exception of the have to have the most expensive and overkill, melt your face GPU) users. Additional port for secondary HDD. Easy access for upgrades to HDD an memory. Ivy Bridge! This thing has blistering fast multi-app processing power!

Cons (and the reason for 4 stars): The biggest drawback for me is the 1TB HDD, as it is slow (7200 RPM). For this reason alone Windows Experience Index rated it a 5.9. All other ratings were mid to upper 7's. Shame on you Asus. For $130 buy a 128GB SSD from Amazon and up your computing potential. Just use the 1TB as a slave. It is bulky, but to be expected as it is a gaming lappy. Good luck trying to find a case that fits it.Lastly the power brick is enormous and the battery is lucky to give you 1.5 hrs unplugged. Again, this is a gaming laptop so this is to be expected.

Other thoughts: The pros highly out weigh the cons! For the price this Republic of Gamers laptop by Asus is a great investment.

I'm not a super gaming computer geek, but i know computers well and am an avid console gamer. I like playing fighting games like SFIV and the like and I also love first person shooters, action games, etc. Well so far I am VERY impressed with this behemouth of a machine! Not that street fighter is the most graphically intensive game, but i was coming from runing on my macbook pro under bootcamp with windows 7. Night and day difference. I can crank up all the settings including 8x antialiasing and the frame rate is stunning. no lag whatsoever. full screen full resolution all the bells and whistles enabled. Just Cause 2 i couldn't get the same with everything maxed out, but you probably would need a higher end machine to do that. With everything maxed out i was getting like 20fps but when i turned off the GPU water effect and toned down a couple other things i was getting a solid 60fps on the in game benchmark tests. Batman arkham asylum and the newer arkham city look positively stunning and smooooooth. The picture is great on this machine and the sound is quite good especially with the subwoofer. The power supply practically needs it own carrying case! Seriously this is the biggest brick i've ever seen on a notebook. The keyboard is very nice as is the track pad. the buttons on the trackpad have quite a bit of travel and feel kind of soft, but not mushy. The track pad also supports two finger rotation and pinch to zoom and 2 finger scrolling and 3 finger aero conrol of the windows 7 windows ala macbook (although it's nowhere near as smooth as the mac, but i didn't get this machine for smooth window navigation). I LOVE the rubberized feel of the plastic of the case. I also love that the machine doesn't come with 100 pieces of "bloatware"

the 750gb hard drivecomes partitioned with about 300 (drive c) for OS and other programs and then a drive D (presumably for your gaming data) is about 400gb. There is still an open expansion bay for another hard drive I believe. Now remember, this is kind of the "bottom of the line" G75 with the 2gb graphics card (the 660) and the processors on the higher end units run a bit faster. So far the machine stays quite cool and it not even as noisey as my macbook pro (and not nearly as hot, you could make toast on my macbook when i was runing games in bootcamp). I don't know a lot about gaming machines but i've read that you can't just look at the graphics card or the processor but you have to look at everything together including how well the machine can cool itself because that can affect how well the gpu runs. I'm sure there are faster notebooks out there, but for 1500 bucks I am beside myself. I use an xbox 360 wireless controller and it works flawlessly, just make sure you download the 64bit driver from microsoft. For steam users, install it to the larger partition (the D drive). There is plenty of room on the 400gb partition. Even if every game you use is 10gb (which they usually are not) That's a lot of games with no external drive and you still have the C partition to store files on, plus you can always get another drive installed. I'm giving it 4 stars just to be conservative, but so far the only thing that's a bit off-putting is it's sheer size. it's much deeper than my 17 inch macbook and won't even fit (width-wise) into the sleeve of my 17inch backpack although it barely fits the length. I had to order an alienware backpack that accomodates the larger machines with the 17.3 screens. I travel A LOT and it is going to be really fantastic to have a complete gaming library with me wherever I go! Unless you're an uber-geek I would highly recommend this unit. Im sure it will do me for several years, but then again, technology is such that you're constantly kicking yourself for not waiting for the next better, faster, quieter, cooler, more power efficient thing to come along.

Oh, by the way, the unit is lighter than it appears. Still heavy, but it is a desktop replacment, so that's just part and parcel...Hope this helps

Everything you've read in the other reviews about its power is true. Portal 2, Skyrim, etc. all look beautiful on this laptop. The matte screen with full 1080p resolution is very nice and easy on the eye. The jet engine fans on the back of the laptop have allowed for hours of gaming without feeling like I could flip the laptop over and grill an egg.

Now, some issues. One is that the space bar is not as responsive as I would like on a gaming keyboard. If I have my thumb too far over to one side, it will fail to register the press. This being the jump key in a lot of games, one can imagine the annoyance this has caused (I've run straight off of platforms like a dork).

The major issue, however, is that the subwoofer will sometimes play when you have headphones in. For a while, every time I started a media source that had audio, I would have to pull out my headphones and reinsert. This is quite annoying when you are trying to play something in a crowded room, or when someone in your house is sleeping. I uninstalled the drivers and let windows install its own, but now it mutes the audio until I click mute then unmute again. I don't know what is going on with this audio chipset, but there appear to be some kinks to iron out.

The audio issue is not a dealbreaker for me, as the laptop really is quite nice looking with excellent performance.I am hoping an update in the future will make my $1300 purchase perform as it should.

I purchased this laptop from Amazon around a month ago. I planned to use it for analyzing my data in Matlab and gaming. Mainly as desktop replacement, but also for travels to conferences, collaborators, etc. I think I made the right choice, since up to now I am completely satisfied. Computer performance is extraordinary good, design is neat, keyboard is good.

I experienced one unpleasant problem which I managed to solve. The computer every now and then (couple of times in an hour or so) makes a latency spike for about 1-2 sec, during which nothing works and if you happen to listen to music or watching a movie, it will make horrible screeching sound. I am pretty tolerant person, so I didn't care until this thing started to interfere with my League of Legend tournaments (2 sec lag in a wrong place equals to loosing a 45 min game). So I went online, and found this thread on the Republic of Gamers forum rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?14960-G75VW-random-audio-and-graphics-spike). It turns out that many people have this problem with G75. Someone on the forum reported that uninstalling McAfee antivirus worked for him. I tried and it worked for me too. I do not experience this problem anymore. But I have to warn you that some other people report that this solution doesn't work for them.

There are other minor problems, which I want to report.

1. When the computer came, the bottom rim of the screen was detached, that is, disconnected from the screen itself. I fixed it by gently pushing onto the rim, so the holders on the other side went inside the corpus where they belong.

2. Sometimes, if I use a headset, the computer doesn't give audio output into earphones, but instead gives it to the speakers (sometimes both speakers and earphones at the same time). So I have to unplug headset and plug it in again.

3. Touchpad works strange in double touch mode. It is supposed to implement mac-like scrolling with double touch, but it works only half of the time. I found that it works better if you touch it sort of ridiculously gentle, like almost to pressure at all. Well, anyway I don't use this function.

Update-02/12/2013: Still very satisfied. Had no further problems, computer works very stable. Problem with headset has been solved in latest audio card patch. Touchpad scrolling works fine too, turns out I wasn't using it right: for bottom-up scrolling you are supposed to make double touch in vertical axis, but I was making in horizontal.

I just bought my new Asus Laptop June 2 at a Best Buy. The unit I received has slightly different specs than the one listed here however they are minimal. The laptop I purchased has only 8gigs of RAM instead of 16 but has a 1TB Hard Drive. Besides that it is the same machine. However, I found it at Best Buy for 1299 instead of 1499 (which is rare because I never expect Best Buy to have the best price). I ended up paying 1566 after 5% tax but that included two year comprehensive warranty, Microsoft office, and two years of antivirus which I couldn't pass up. I went straight home to try it out and so far I am impressed. The unit looks beautiful with the matte screen and the fingerprint resistant finish. The resolution is stunning and the backlit keyboard is solid. (though the keys feel a bit cheap I am not at all concerned)

As my main concern was graphics, the first thing I did was download Skyrim from Steam. Booting up the game for the first time showed me how this unit is worth every penny. Many reviews talk generally about the graphics of their system but at the end of the day, I want to be able to say how it handles specific games. That being said, Skyrim looks FANTASTIC. I played it on my xbox360 in HD and the performance on this laptop makes the 360 version look like its from the 90's. The lighting effects, graphical details, and resolution are all amazing and the smooth framerate blew me away. I couldn't believe how well it was rendering the dense foliage and textures without missing a beat. I am confident this baby will run anything I throw at it for years to come. I also noticed that getting my music onto ITunes was fast as well. On my old computers, uploading hundreds of files into the program often caused it to crash and took hours. I got all my music up in a matter of minutes.

One thing I did notice was the vibrations of the DVD drive when it is reading a disk. I didn't worry at all but you always prefer quiet disk drives. As I don't plan on using much media from DVD/CD's the concern is minimal. Also the sound quality is rich and there seems to be a built in sub woofer but the volume doesn't quite reach loud enough for my tastes. However, I have external speakers whenever I really need great volume so this is another non issue for me. I have yet to find any real cons to this system yet although I have only had it for a day.

The computer runs very quiet and looks like a professional/nerdy mix of materials and design. I would also like to emphasize that I did lots of research before arriving at this laptop. I found that it had minimal negative reviews with many good ones that matched my graphical expectations and price point. While some people may complain about the hefty size of the computer or the large AC adapter brick that accompanies the unit, you must remember that this is a desktop replacement gaming laptop and it serves its role admirably. I would strongly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a gaming powerhouse laptop without breaking the bank and is willing to sacrifice portability for power.

I bought a SanDisk 120 GIG SSD on Amazon and went to Best Buy to let them install it. The warrenty I purchased covered the instalation and migration of the OS to the SSD. It took them three days to complete the job and I now have both hard drives in the machine: the 120SSD and the 1Terabyte 5400RMP-HHD. I have to say it was a great idea to upgrade. My computer boots in 20 seconds (as oppsed to about 60 before)I was able to load saves in Skyrim in five second as opposed to 10-15 seconds. This is as fast as I have ever seen a computer run. I store all OS related files and programs as well as games on the SSD and my music, docs, and movies on the HHD. The people at best buy did remove the recovery partition, but I can take it back if something happens. I highly reccomend doing a similar upgrade if you have an in store warrenty or if you know how to do it yourself.

A reasonable compact laptop, with a limited memory and storage, just right for a schoolkid like my nephew to take his work to and from school. nice and light weight.It does the job efficienly, no frills.

If anyone out there is considering purchasing a product from midwest notebooks , consider this. They are dealing with products that other people are getting rid of. I bought a dell notebook from them and within a couple of weeks I had to send it back because it kept crashing. They failed to return the disc and pamphlet that originally came with it. I told them about it and they totally ignored me. If they were local Iwould have no trouble finding a place to store it.Think twice about buying from them . I know I never will and i'm telling everyone else about them.

The Dell C640 may be an older model yet it is surprisingly adroit with Windows XP SP3 running 512MB of RAM. The Dell physical specs include a screen with a large LCD screen, two mouse options (eraser button mouse-stick and trackpad), the front LCD clasp is held with one button (a bit stiff on several tested, should help to keep closed however). The front bays are dual purpose media (right) or battery (right and left). Two used battery packs provided a comfortable 5 1/2 hours of light internet usage. There is a MiniPCI expansion port underneath with prewired antennae that route unseen through the LCD lid casing. Lacking a card I simply used a Belkin PCMCIA / PCCard adapter with excellent results. The keyboard was another unexpected treat with quiet but firm action.

The Intel Pentium 4-M processor can use SpeedStep and other power saving techniques. When running off the battery it will drop down to a lower speed rating. When docked or back on AC power it kicks back up to the full speed. While in idle mode it barely seemed to sip the battery. This Latitude was made for business class use and thus sports a docking station connector which is a great investment if only to relieve the stress of repeated AC adapter plug-ins at home. The AC adapter from Dell uses a keyed beveled connector that looks engineered to reduce such AC plug issues that plague all laptops. The laptop is a nice black with some attempt to put a few minimal curving lines, since it was meant to appeal to a staid business environment you can expect a primarily blocky look common to PC laptops. The large medallion like silver Dell logo on the lid cover looks nice. A good solid laptop.

This notebook is a good deal. Overall quality is good. It scores 3.4 on Windows Experience Index, due to the processor. Memory, Gaming, and Hard disk score above 5. Screen, quietness, and sound are very good. Keyboard and case are unimpressive but functional.

Will stream Netflix HD video fine, but that is it's processing limit.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase.

the front side of the keyboard near by where the touch-pad is, the machine has the 2-two buttons so wrong positioned that when you set this laptop on your lap the buttons activate frecuently.

I recently recieved this as a gift from a family member, and im pretty impressed. Not saying its a powerhouse, im just saying it passed my expectations. First of all it can handle light gaming. I played far cry 3 on lowest settings with a decent amount of lag, but iwas surprised it could handle it at all. of course its not a gaming powerhouse but it nice to see i could have a somewhat decent gaming experience with it. my biigest gripe is battery its not very good now i know that this is no ultrabook, but i was hoping for a solid 4 or 5 hours of moderate use, but i get 3 hours of browsing or light use, and thats a rarity, usually around 2 and a half hours. although i was impressed(to an extent) with all the laptops out today 350$ can get you a better machine. but at the time of its releasemid say this was good for the price

Gave as gift to daughter she could not connect to her wireless router. Called HP and had to return to them to fix it. They are returning it to her today stating that they fixed it. The problem was with the wireless antannae. Once we get back we will be able to tell how it is.

Overall the computer has been working. The keypad is messed up somehow and jumps around on the page as you type. It's a 32 bit not 64, so the only way to add memory is to upgrade software.

Sony VAIO Z Series VPCZ134GX/B Notebook PC

The Vaio Z is an impressive computer in a three-pound package. It's great for travel purposes and can do basically anything a full-sized computer can do. The battery lasts for hours, so you don't have an excuse for not working on the airplane. It does have one drawback, however - it puts out more hot exhaust than a 1968 GTO. It can get uncomfortable if you are using it as an actual "laptop." Even worse, the computer will shut itself off if it overheats, which can be a real problem during a meeting or long work session. I had to buy a cooling stand. I got one with a single blower that sits right under the Vaio's air intake. That solved the problem, although the cooling stand takes up space in the carrying case and so takes away from the extreme portability of the computer. Can't have everything, I guess.

The laptop worked fine for one month, then the screen showed black blames in the left side, the problem disappear for two months. I asked for warranty and SONY cover it only in USA, I traveled to Ecuador and there was not warranty there, now the screen has two black shadows. Finally I had problems with SSD disk and tried to use the recovery system and it came with a problem and when the system is being restored on the 70% it show an error.

With all this problems I will sell it as bargain on ebay and will never buy another sony laptop. The quality of the components is bad even in Japanese models as this. NOTE: MADE IN JAPAN!!!!!

The Amazon vendor iMount who sold this to me did not tell me that this was a 2010 model. Note this is a 3 YEAR OLD computer. I had to download hundreds of updates to get Windows 7 updated. It also came with 70 gb of the hard drive already filled up. With what I have no idea since they claimed it was new.

I am now stuck with this laptop as they refuse to take it back without a 50% restocking fee.

The "pinch" function does not seem to be working on the touch pad, which I am addicted to from my previous Sony Vaio.

Bad points: This Vaio Z laptop runs "hot". I have only had it on for a couple of hours and it is so hot that I cannot actually have it on my lap. Also, it seems to be an old style. It looks very old fashioned.

I am a PC guy, but I am also familiar with Macs. I love the Sony VAIO...this is my third one since 2001 and they are all still working great. This new one though is the best. My favorite aspects are the beautiful screen, Windows 7, and the Blu-ray player. I have used it for a couple weeks now, and it really is a laptop I just love to work on. The new graphical items in Windows 7 are awesome, which makes the user experience much more fun. The VAIO also comes with pre-installed software, but it's all stuff you want to keep on it--like the Sony audio/video applications. And again, I just can't stress enough how wonderful the screen is. My wife is a photographer, and she has taken some photos that just have that "so real" look to them on the screen...kind of like viewing a Blu-ray moview on a great TV. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Pros:

Wide & bright screen, good enough to watch movies.

Fancy body design, looks beautiful.

Spaced keys, makes typing very comfortable.

good quality webcam/mic that works in low light and can track face movements.

I read all the reviews and did not find a single one here that matches my experience so far. I've owned this for >1 year now so below are the pros & cons:

Pros:

Looks beautiful

Excellent keyboard (can type very fast)

HDMI & Blu-Ray means I've not needed a blu-ray player so far.

Good screen

Cons:

Terrible battery life. If you don't play video/audio or stream from the internet you may get 2 hours from this otherwise 1.5 hours is max. The battery life indicator is totally off. It may start off showing that there is 4 hours of battery life available, but it will reduce that to 2 within a few minutes and then even less as you keep using it. YOU ALMOST ALWAYS WILL NEED A POWER SUPPLY NEARBY. I guarantee it.

Heavy. This thing is not light weight.

Lots of junk software loaded including some Sony software. Why can't they just provide the rest on a disc and let us choose to install it if we want. All VAIO software is junk. It cannot manage anything and hangs up and slows your machine down. Also uses up resources and reduces battery life. I suggest uninstalling all.

Placement of the 3 USB ports close to each others on the same side.

In summary, I loved it when I ordered it and got it first, but now I'm ready to get rid of it for something that is lighter in weight and will have longer battery life. I am willing to compromise on looks!

Lenovo ThinkPad X120e 0596A28 11.6" LED Notebook E-350 1.6GHz - Matte Black

I use both Mac and Windows computers but when it came to finding a small computer for travel the Lenovo came out at the top of my list. I wanted something lighter than my 15.4 inch laptop. I also wanted to get a netbook from a company with a good track record for service which eliminated Dell and Asus from the list.

The Lenovo at 3.5 lbs is light and the 11.6 screen is XGA at 768 vs 600 lines of resolution. It has a separate AMD graphics processor which definitely helps with performance. The netbook does support two 4GB RAM modules for a total of 8GB of RAM.

It has WiFi with excellent reception and with 802.11n it is much faster than my old WiFi laptop. It also has a 1GB Ethernet connection which I use when transferring large files from a desktop computer to the netbook before a trip. The speed difference of the 1GB Ethernet is very noticeable and cuts file transfer times by 90%.

The keyboard is outstanding and has to be used to be fully appreciated. It has the action of a top quality aftermarket desktop keyboard and much better than any other I have used from HP-Compaq, Apple, Dell, or Toshiba. With a reduced size keyboard the extra feel of the Lenovo is much noticed and much appreciated. The best part is the pointer in the center which I find much easier to use than a touch pad when I cannot use a mouse, as when strapped into an aircraft at 30,000 feet.

The netbook also includes a SD card reader which some people may find useful. It has a HDMI port which I do find useful when traveling. I can take a HDMI cable and hook the netbook up to the LCD televisions I find in most hotel rooms.

All in all this laptop has met my needs, both for functionality and price. I didn't want to spend more than five on a laptop, and this was the perfect price for my needs and use.

I bought this for its:

1. speed (faster than my previous Atom-based netbook),

2. larger screen (11.6 is way better than 10.1)

3. matte screen (I don't like glossy displays) and

4. overall professional look.

Modifications I made:

1. Installed additional 4GB for a total of 6GB. Installation is very easy.

2. Switched the Fn and Ctrl keys virtually in the BIOS (there is a option), and physically by snapping them off with a credit card and snapping them into the switched locations. Now I have the Ctrl key in the bottom left, which is where most laptops have it.

What bothers me:

1. The fan (air-flow) sound level is relatively high, but am getting used to it. I subtract 1 star because of this.

2. An occasional 'clunk' sound from the hard drive sounds like a billard ball or mable dropped on a floor. I've researched this a bit looks like many disk drive brands have this issue could be fixed by firmware, but doesn't apparently affect the drive long term. However, I do backups regularly to make sure I don't lose any data.

Bonus:

1. Only slightly heavier than my previous Atom-based netbook, it is noticeable, but tolerable.

2. There are 2 sets of right and left mouse buttons at the top of the touchpad (for use with the trackbutton) and bottom of the touchpad (for use with the touchpad itself.) I'm getting used to using both sets.

Bottom line:

Better-than-netbook and almost-a-laptop. It's been a month or so since I bought this and I'm happy with it.

I personally use it to produce & perform with Ableton Live & FL Studio (with a larger external monitor of course).

Highly demanding tasks aside, this computer is an absolute must-buy if you're in the market for an ultraportable device.

In simple terms:

Nice hardware. Definately Lenovo is pulling out well built stuff. I've used IBM/Lenovo for many years at the office; that's why I purchased this for my wife.

If you're looking for a netbook kind of use equipment; this a netbook killer. However, for the specifications and price (this is a Notebook, not a Netbook!)I expected faster performance. We actually use it for browsing purposes and a few Home-Office features and yet, not the expected performance for such simple tasks.

Finally, the battery. Regular use, mostly connected. Two months and it doesn't hold a charge for more than 1 hour. It could be a defectous one; however, it happened to be in mine.

This was a bargain deal for me. The moment I clicked the buy button, the price of this product went up, as it was a one time opened piece. Thanks to Amazon policies as the seller contacted me and made me aware of this fact. I am happy with the performance of this unit. i5 3210 is a good option and shows reasonable power. Considering the fact that this Laptop does not contain a separate graphic card, I am using it for my office work.... and it meets my expectations. The Battery life is reasonably long and for routine office work with word & excel, it lasts for more than 3,4 hours. The adapter is very small [ tiny] and does not add to the weight. However the original Laptop is heavy.

The speakers do a very good job. The look and feel is also nice. Overall I love this piece.

I really like the laptop. The built quality is good. It doesn't feel like cheap plastic.The processor is fast along with the graphics. This is not a gaming laptop, but it can handle games pretty well. Portal 2 runs with no lag at all with stock settings in native resolution (some things on low and some other are in high). It runs Far Cry 3 on low with a low frame rate but it is playable, I finished the game on this laptop. COD black ops 2 runs better than expected. I have no lag on stock settings on native resolution.

The hard drive on the laptop is pretty slow making the computer slow overall. Maybe it's not that bad. I may just be used to SSDs.

I upgraded the laptop with a SSD and 8GB of RAM and the laptop screams. It is the fastest computer I have had and I come from a not so old mac that had a SSD. The computer boots up in only 10 seconds from the time I press the power button to the desktop. I installed windows 8 and I have no problems at all. I did install some drivers from the asus website.

Pros:

-Fast Ivy bridge processor.

-not too heavy

-good build quality

-never gets hot, even while gaming for hours it just gets a little warm.

-quiet. I never hear the fans with normal use. While gaming I can barely hear them.

-sound is good. I haven't tested how loud they can get since I always use headphones but whenI used them they sounded very clear and looked loud considering volume was at less than half.

-battery it's fine. Not the best battery life out there but it's normal for a laptop like this.

Cons:

-stock hard drive too slow. I bought a SSD

-It is only using one RAM slot, which makes it slower. I bought a pair of samsung RAM and the Windows experience index jumped from 6.something to 7.5. (everything but the graphics is above 7.0)

-the space bar in the keyboard doesn't always register when you press it. You just have to press it all the way and its fine.

-I which the screen had more viewing angles, but I don't complain because this is a cheap laptop

I recomend this laptop to anyone. Whether you are looking for a laptop for school, just browsing the internet, videos, light gaming, etc this is a good choice if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Pros: Lightweight, plenty of storage and memory, instant on technology.

Cons: OS was faulty from the get go, freezing and crashing within a month. Finally got it to stop after the 3rd restore, this time using back-up disks from another computer. The touch pad is as others have described very touchy and you end up touching it unintentionally. This results in text inadvertently highlighted and deleted, inserted into the wrong place and sometimes tricky navigation.

Overall, it can do what you want a Win 7 computer to do. Why it comes with all the Pen and Touchscreen software installed is beyond me this is not a touchscreen computer. But expect some hiccups here and there. We've really tried to get used to the mouse pad and adjust the settings, etc., but there is just no getting around it. It is poorly designed/positioned.

There are better laptops out there for the price or less. I would encourage you to buy one of those, not this one.

Just got this sleek little laptop yesterday. I am truly amazed with the design, how fast it runs and etcetera. A great laptop for the price. Windows 8 isn't hard to operate, just give it some time and you won't want to go back to the other operating systems.

Got this peice of equipment for christmas, and first off, i loved the feel of the windows 8 along with not having to use the apps side of it, it almost has a windows 7 feel. so as soon as i opened it, i went to install cod4, i was a little worried because on system requirement labs it said i only had 35 mb of dedicated video ram, i was surprised because average for even the low end pc is 256mb, so i was worried but knew the worst to come would be little jumps and lags, but no, cod4 on medium settings gave me about a 65-70 framerate, (not including shadows and antiantalyzing) at the strange resolution of 1366x 768 which is one i had never seen, so after that i purchased MW3, it gives me a 4591 (cap) framerate on low settings, which is AMAZING, not sure and if someone could answer why blackops 1 gives me only 15-55 when there is no cap.

so off to the pros.

I upgraded from a laptop that was five years old so almost anything would seem amazing next to my old dino. But, I think I can say that unless you are a hardcore gamer or for some reason you feel that you absolutely need an optical disk drive, you will be very satisfied with this laptop just as I am. Yeah some people are being really nit-picky about viewing angles and such but seriously, it's not an issue unless you're a paraplegic and can't adjust the screen angle (you have to do it every time you open the laptop anyway). I am very, very happy with the battery life. I can use it at school for several hours and still return home with 20% battery left...it's so nice not to have to bring a charger all the time. It's incredibly slim and light. I get compliments on it all the time. The only thing I'm not super excited about is the hard-drive capacity; it's marketed at about 125gb but when you open the computer for the first time you quickly find out that after the OS, you only have about 60gb for yourself and the SSD is not easily upgrade-able like on older laptops. Nothing an external can't fix and it'll probably keep me from cluttering it up anyway. But at the end of the day, all these things are just minor trade-offs for having an otherwise very slick, slim, and light laptop.

I read the reviews on this laptop and decided that it honestly couldn't be that bad, and I was right.

I understand what the reviewers are saying. The colors DO wash out if you tilt the screen forward or backward. However, tilting the display far enough to uncomfortably wash out the screen poses bigger problems, like the fact that the screen is at a horribly awkward angle. It was fine out of the box, but I calibrated the display (took 3 min) and now it's quite good.

Back to the good, this laptop is THIN. It's hard to appreciate its size until you truly see it. At 15 inches, it's easily one of (if not the) thinnest 15 inchers on the market. It doesn't hurt that it's a looker too.

The windows experience index is 5.9, with the lowest being the graphics (5.9) which is expected. The rest of the specs are in the high 6's or low 7's

I recommend working your way through a clean install and getting all the crap off, considering you don't get too much harddrive space with all of the preloaded crap.

I love this laptop, and gave it 4 stars mostly because of the bloatware, and that windows 8 is meh on a laptop without a touchscreen. However, it's certainly a great laptop and the reviews don't do it justice

I went from an Alienware M15X to this and don't regret it. The alienware was really, really bad with battery life and I knew that before I got it. I just didn't realize how often I would start going out to other places where a plug wasn't readily accessible before I got it. I never used the alienware for serious gaming anyway just for software dev. The Samsung Series 9 works great to dev on and the battery life is amazing. I am generally around 8 hours per charge now, which isn't 10 hours, but is still great.

I do not have any problem with the keyboard or the trackpad like other reviewers claimed. There is a side swipe in windows 8 that got annoying but then I just turned it off. I was worried that this only being an i5 processor that running photoshop, aptana, WAMP, eclipse, and many chrome tabs would slow it down. Well, I was wrong. It kept up pretty well with everything that I was doing. If I had a bad experience at one point, it at least wasn't bad enough to stick in my head.

Bad notes: The screen does look a little washed out compared to my alienware. I also really, really wish it had a better screen resolution. But in actuality, I don't even think or notice it at all in my normal daily activities.

I got this thing on amazon for an almost $400 discount because of a free $200 amazon gift card that came with purchasing the laptop, and the laptop was already marked down $200 on sale. I love it especially for its battery life and looks. Processing power though is also good.

So I've had this laptop for about the past week and I love it. I've read a lot of the reviews on here and most are relatively accurate, but here's my full assessment: I got mine from vernaltech

The Good

6-8 hours of battery life with heavy use of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Google Chrome simultaneously

Really light and sleek design that's much much better than the hefty Toshiba A505D I had before

It doesn't heat up much at all, especially when kept on a hard non-insulating surface. Insulating surfaces (i.e. your bed or lap) tend to heat it up much quicker

Boots up in about 12-14 seconds

The wi-fi has not cut out for me yet (this is the New Series 9)

8gb RAM

Trackpad is awesome and works perfectly fine for me (only issues came up when I mistakenly rested my other palm on the pad...just have to get used to it)

The bad:

128 GB SSD which actually = 60 gigs out of box

Text and image display on the screen isn't Amazing, but is manageable

Speakers strangely on the bottom of the laptop...doesn't really make sense to me, but I use headphones and external speakers 99% of the time anyways so not a deal braker.

Overall I love the Samsung 9 performance wise. It's fast, light, and efficient. It's perfect for my use and why I gave it a 5 star rating. If the most important factors to you for your laptop are screen resolution and/or SSD space (which can be changed, but I believe voids your warranty) then I would not go with this laptop. Otherwise, it's a great choice!

Packaging -

The laptop arrived way sooner than the ship date (in 3 days of placing the order), packed really well. The LAN adapter comes with the laptop.

SETUP -

I know a lot of folks have complained about the display and the wifi connectivity.

The wifi did not connect at first. After rebooting the router, modem and clearing the dns cache, it connected and worked fine.

The display controls can be set very easily, and the interface is built very well. It takes you step by step (through color settings, gamma, brightness, text etc) and you can set it to your convenience.

There is some bloatware which I uninstalled.

The keypad is similar to MacBook, and frankly I really like it. It takes lesser effort to type.

Bright screen, light weight. This unit replaces a HP 14" that was stolen out of my vehicle in Redwood City CA.

Thieves actually did me a favor as this laptop does doughnut around that older HP running Windows 7. Did like

window7 better than eight though.

Con's getting used to windows eight. I just normally go to the older version of window and skip windows eight altogether.

Its a pretty decent laptop and really lightweight. I got a faulty piece with a bad LCD monitor but Dell promptly replaced the defective part and it hasn't given any problems since.
