Sony VAIO VPC-Z212GX/B 13.1-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO VPC-Z212GX/B 13.1-Inch LaptopSony's VAIO Z-Series laptops are great in a lot of ways: compact, decent battery life, and great for travel work. The area that they fall down, however, is driver support. Sony refuses to let you install generic drivers for their hardware, and does not push out regular updates to keep pace. For example, my video card is an Nvidia, but the Nvidia drivers will not install because Sony has asked them not to allow it. I confirmed this with both Nvidia and Sony support. The video drivers are 2 years old for my card and really hinder the legs of the product.

I would definitely not recommend any Sony product with "custom" hardware that does not allow regular driver updates from the manufacturers.

Got this as a replacement for a macbook air. Wanted something that had the same form factor as the airs but could play some games when I wanted.

Pros:

Small and Light and really fast

Better Screen then Macbook Airs

All the ports you need

PMD for gaming

Cons:

Pricey

Small HD (out of the box only 60ish GB free, use mem cards for storage to help this)

Smudge magnet

Extremely happy with this Laptop, would have given a 5/5 if not for the HD thing.

Definitely the most powerful little computer available at this time. Best of all, it runs windows 7. Initially bought mac airs... but after several tries, has been running hot and draining batteries faster. According to an apple specialists, it might be because of their new lion operating system.

The laptop is everything it's advertised to be.

Pros:

FULL 1080 HD SCREEN!

HD webcam

My configuration (default processor and 4gigs RAM) scores a 5.9 on Windows Rating. (RAM was lowest score)

Reboots in under 30 seconds. Seriously.

So light and mobile for on-the-go

So powerful when at home plugged into media drive

Cons:

Touchpad is ok, but unreliable.

Sound is decent, but shallow. Bass is non-existent. But when I need good sound, I'm at home plugged into my TV or I have my headphones in. So it's not so bad.

I was looking for a small, lightweight, high performance laptop with a nice screen, backlit keyboard and SSD hard drive. The Sony Z2 delivered and I'm very happy with this premium ultraportable.

Pros

* Gorgeous 1600x900 screen, very bright and crisp.

* Full-voltage, Sandy Bridge i5 processor.

* Excellent battery life, ~4.5 hours with heavy use.

* Only 2.5 pounds!!!

* Dimmable backlit keyboard

* Full size Ethernet, HDMI & VGA ports.

* Boots up in under 20 seconds, programs open instantaneously.

* Speedy 64GB Samsung SSDs in RAID0. Although these drives are only Sata II (3 Gbit/s) this RAID setup is very fast. A 50MB CrystalDiskMark bench delivered 576 MB/s reads and 322 MB/s writes.

Cons

* Speakers are a joke, the laptop sounds like an old alarm clock. Sony includes a pair of noise cancelling earbuds to address this problem, but I'm surprised they put such horrible speakers in their high end laptops.

* Fingerprint magnet

* Small trackpad. Sometimes misses multi-touch gestures.

* Keyboard travel a little shallow

* Major bloatware! 116 processes and 46% of RAM running out of the box. I disabled all Sony and unnecessary programs/services from starting and I'm down to 67 processes and 29% RAM after booting into Windows.

Windows Experience Index

Processor 6.9

I've had the laptop for three months and I'm very happy with it. I considered the Samsung Series 9, ASUS Zenbook and the Apple MacBook Air, but neither one had all the features I wanted. Not to mention they all use low-voltage processors. The performance of this laptop is on par or better than many high-end 15" laptops and it's only 2.5 pounds! If you can live with sub-par speakers I would recommend this laptop.

Sony VAIO VPCF136FM/B 16.4" Notebook (1.73 GHz Intel Core i7 - 740QM Processor, 6 GB RAM, 640 GB Ha

Sony VAIO VPCF136FM/B 16.4' NotebookI did quite a bit of research for a new laptop. This Sony Vaio is excellent for the price. I wanted to make my own laptop on dell and sony website and everything was way above this price with all these features. For excellent performance and added features I didnt mind spending this much. I play games with no problem and multi task with amazing speed. The fan noise is a little loud at times of long gaming but I expected that. Overall I recommend this laptop.

I just purchased my Sony laptop to replace a 2 year old HP pavillion series that had many overheating problems. This laptop is does not have much lag time and does not seem to have the same over heating issues. I know I could feel different long term, but this last month I have been very pleased with how it runs my applications/games. I was even pleased that it did not seem to be burdened with a lot of extra programs. I definately would recommend this laptop for someone who need a little faster processing laptop. I know there are a few cons, but I have not run into the problem of accidently turning it off because the turn off is on the side where the mouse may be.

I've owned this laptop since Jan 2011 and its been great. Great hardware and all-around performance. I bought it at a brick and mortar store for $1300 after taxes, so $1800 strikes me as pricey (maybe I just got lucky?) but it was a great value buy for me.

Battery life is short(90-100min) if you're using wi-fi or running the bluray drive, however if you have the wi-fi off it jumps up to almost 3hrs on power saver mode. I haven't had issues since I plan around those things. In addition the 5400rpm harddrive seems rather laggy if you're running large programs, not annoying but noticeable when loading sometimes.

I'm currently looking into a RAM upgrade and getting an SSD drive to replace the stock hdd to help with "laggy" feeling.

All in all, this is a great laptop if you can find it at the right price point. I highly recommend it!

Great cinouter, however, updates and light programs cause the keyboard to heat up and its noisey as hell. Research Sony Vaios as a whole on youtube. The fans are riduclous.

I find this laptop to be super fast and efficient for video editing, etc. so have to give it 5 stars. Using CS5 Creative Suite Pro Premiere Pro and it's a breeze working on this Vaio model. Left it at the standard 6G of RAM but upgraded the OS to Windows Ultimate (actually, dual-booted so I can continue to have Sony coverage).

Minor down-side is battery life (to be expected for i7 CPU) and also the fan nice (again, loaded machines tend to generate more heat). Bought it from the Sony outlet Center for a cut-throat price so am super-happy.

Bought my keyboard skin on eBay (from China because Sony didn't make em). Got my protector case and adapter case from Amazon (zero tax) so I'm all good.

Don't forget to email yourself the Serial Number for this and other gadgets you may have in case it's lost or stolen ;)

Good luck!

HP ENVY 14-2020NR 14.5-Inch Notebook (Silver)

HP ENVY 14-2020NR 14.5-Inch NotebookAfter using this laptop for 2 weeks, I am totaly satisfied with it. The new hp envy sb version has all aluminum chassis and feels vry solid. Windows boots up in 18 seconds. Running program as fast as average desktop. Here is some feedback:

The screen: some one may complain this laptop never comes with radiance display anymore. Actually, the bright view screen is great, and it's even brighter and has more vibrate color than my wife's macbook pro.

The touchpad: This sandy bridge refresh version has a nearly as good as macbook touchpad. Multigesture, two finger scroll and pinch zoom all work smoothly. Just remember don't update the synaptics drive. New driver doesn't support double-tab to turn off touchpad feature.

Battery life: If you set the brightness to 60%, and just normal use, the out of box battery lasts about 5 hours. If you turn off the bluetooth and wifi, battery should last even longer.

Finally the noise: Normal using won't produce much noise. You need to put your ear at the air vents to hear it. It does has some noise when playing games, but tolerable.

Purchased from amazon, and happy to deal with them.

The Envy 14 has a lot going for it. It's a great size, has a backlit keyboard that's a pleasure to type on, and is built very well. Further, HP has released a BIOS update to address the issue of 3D applications and games not working properly with AMD's automatic graphic switching. The solution essentially reverts back to manual switching where the user has control of which graphics processing unit (GPU) he or she wants to use. It can also be set up to run on the high-performance AMD Radeon dedicated GPU (dGPU) when the machine is plugged in and switch over to the power-saving Intel integrated GPU (iGPU) when running on battery. This is basically how graphic switching works on older Envy 14 notebooks (model number 14-1xxx).

Regrettably, I had to send this notebook back for a pair of deal-breaking issues. First and foremost, the trackpad (or clickpad as it's dubbed by HP and part supplier Synaptics), is awful. HP has tried to emulate the Apple MacBook Pro in this area, and having previously owned a MBP, the Envy fails miserably. After trying many different drivers and settings, I simply could not get the trackpad to perform and respond smoothly and predictably. The final annoyance is the orange light that activates whenever you disable the pad, either on its own or by plugging in a USB mouse.

The second major problem is the screen itself. The resolution of 1366x768 isn't a huge issue for me, but at one point, HP did offer the Envy 14 with a high-resolution (1600x900) "Radiance" display that was of excellent quality and color reproduction. The screen in the current model, though not the worst I've ever seen, is sub-standard for something that's marketed as a premium product. Even with a lot of tweaking, the colors are pretty dull. It's also more reflective than other glossy notebooks I've seen and used, which makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to use outside.

In the end, a couple missteps in overall execution make it a less-than-ideal choice for my use.

Buy HP ENVY 14-2020NR 14.5-Inch Notebook (Silver) Now

I recently purchased 4 of these laptops for our business. We work with 3D CAD drawings. This laptop has no problem running the 3d CAD programs. The display brightness is bright for the user. The bottom of the laptop stays cool. I like the lights on the keyboard helps me see the keys in low lit areas. I also like the usb port on the power adapter because i can charge my ipad with it (ipad cord isn't long enough to make to the outlet). I haven't had much time to test the sound out.

Dislike:

One of the laptop's underscore key doesn't work you have to press it 10 times to get it to type once. Screen viewing angle not the greatest.

Overall I would recommend this laptop to anyone.

EDIT:

RUN SAVE YOURSELF. THE SCREEN ON ALL FOUR LAPTOPS WE BOUGHT GOT SCRATCHED BY THE LIP AROUND THE KEYBOARD. ONE LAPTOP THE SOUND CRAPPED OUT AND NOW SOUNDS LIKE DONALD PLEASENCE in the movie GROUND ZERO. THREE OF THE LAPTOPS HAVE A KEY THAT DOESN'T WORK UNLESS POUNDED ON. HP TOLD ME I COULD SEND THEM BACK AND HAVE THE SCREENS REPLACED,BUT IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT TWO WEEKS WELL I LIVE OUTSIDE THE US BESIDE I NEED MY LAPTOP EVERYDAY FOR WORK.

CONCLUSION: ITS NOT A KEEPER

EDIT 2:

Wireless networking passed away on one of the laptops...can't wait to see whats next

I bought this laptop for $799 end of Oct 2011 as a general purpose computer for work and home use. So far, i have been quite satisfied with it.

Pros

1. solid metalic construction

2. backlit key pads is a big plus.

3. solid performing switchable 1G graphic card.

4. i5 processor is more than adequate for general home and work computing.

5. no bloat ware to deal with

Cons

1. Screen is not the highest resolution

2. keypads are fine, but could use a little more tactile feedback.

3. the fan motor is quiet, but there is a constant noise. compared to HP's own D6V, this is loud.

4. Not the most attractive laptop.

5. laptop is a bit heavy

6. battery life is only acceptable

7. no finger print reader

8. ram is a bit low at 4G

Overall, it's not a perfect laptop for the money, but definitely a good total package. you will not be able to play the latest action video games, but for general home/work use, it provides more than adequate power. The fan noise can be a bit irritating, but i guess that comes with a performace chip in a small package.

If you can get this laptop on sale at a good price, then it is definitively a great buy.

Lenovo X1 Carbon 34442DU 14-Inch LaptopPros:

Fast, Solid build quality,Low fan noise, Low heat, Excellent keyboard,

The only con i could find was the trackpad isn't as slick as some of the newer ultrabooks and feels a bit wobbly when I click it. If you can get past that, it's an amazing laptop.

Acer Aspire AS5733-6426 15.6-Inch Laptop (Gray)

Acer Aspire AS5733-6426 15.6-Inch Laptopwell, i picked my Acer AS5733 up at my local wally world a little over a week ago. after cleaning up the junk apps and getting all of the updates, it's a great little machine. Also to be noted, and I'm not the only one to get this, there appears to be an unlisted update with the processor; it's an Intel i5 560M which has the turbo boost. Very nice little surprise indeed. The display is bright and vibrant with no dead pixels. Speakers are about average for a notebook; good enough for watching a movie in a quiet room. Cooling fan is dynamic and is very quiet. Only 2 USB ports and no hard drive activity light (funny how I miss something once it's gone). Unless you clean the software up first, it takes 4 DVD disks to make the factory restore disks. Haven't tried the camera yet so I cannot comment. All in all a very good buy.

Great machines So far, I have bought 4 Acer laptops and all are doing excellent. NOT one issue with any of them -so far at least!! Would definitely buy another if I have a need for one.

The laptop has a really beautiful screen, great color. The speed is also fine, and the price was good. However, after 7 months, my first problem with it is the keyboard. Perhaps it's because the number keys are on the right, so the rest are smaller, but I regularly hit the wrong keys. If I always had, no big thing, but not so. Also the touch is difficult, sometimes having to go back and press hard really slows me down. Second, the sound has problems, scratchy when changing screens, then clears up. I'm looking into plugging in another keyboard to remedy my worst problem. I can live with the rest but won't buy another Acer.

Acer Aspire One AO722-0022 Notebook AMD Dual-Core Processor C-60 (1.00GHz) 11.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 10

Acer Aspire One AO722-0022 Notebook AMD Dual-Core Processor C-60 11.6' 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 5400rpm AMD Radeon HD 6290The Acer Aspire One 722 may be small in size and price, but don't let that fool you. With it's 500GB hard drive and 4G memory it's larger than any desktops we own, and faster too.

Though I haven't had the Acer long, it is continually impressive. Out of the box, I was pleased to see it lacking in much of the bloatware that came on my HP netbook and Gateway laptop. The desktop was blissfully vacant, leaving me to populate it with my own selections of programs.

Connecting to any WiFi has been a matter of a couple of clicks, including our sometimes difficult home wifi that treats new devices with deep suspicion. The Acer was accepted onto our home network with no issues at all.

Whether loading on photos from sd, using the built-in webcam, or utilizing 3rd party readers such as Kindle for PC and Overdrive Media Console, everything works seamlessly.

I've read some reviews recently that laptops can run annoyingly hot, but that is not the case with the Acer. It's quiet and cool, even when streaming videos. If you are a person who, like me, is easily bothered by excessive electronic noise, you will especially appreciate this quiet little Acer.

A early drawback was the whiteness of the background. Even after turning the brightness all the way down, the whiteness was too intense. Fortunately, it is completely adjustable in the Control Panal where you can customize themes, colors etc. I was able to choose a background with a gentle glow much like the color on my favorite e-readers.

For many, the multi-gesture function is a good selling point and many will enjoy it. I, however, could not get accustomed to it and was happy to discover I could disable the features one by one until it functioned perfectly for me.

Certainly, this is not a high end laptop and it shows in the plastic and hinges, we well as the plug for the ac adapter. I'm gentle plugging it in because the connection feels a little frail. Same with transporting it. The shell is light plastic so I am extra careful. But for such an outstanding low price it's worth it. I only paid 250.00 for mine with a rebate, but it is a good value even at a higher price.

If you plan to listen to music or videos without headphones you'll want a good external speaker, but this is true for many laptops. I used my Jawbone Jambox speaker and it sounded great. I don't think this Acer model has bluetooth, so I used a cord into the audio.

Comes with Windows 7. Finally, Microsoft has produced an operating system I like almost as much as XP. It even has a built in security suite from Microsoft.

And lastly, there are amazing desktop background photos including landscapes and screens from around the world that automatically rotate through the day. I never know what dynamic desktop scene I will treated to next. It's an unexpected pleasure.

The Acer Aspire One is an excellent choice for the budget-minded person who also wants some speed and storage space. I'm so impressed, I would consider Acer in the future for my higher end electronics.

This is the exact model with the 500G HD, 4G ram that was sent out to all the tech magazines and bloggers for review. Beware that other retailers might have other versions that not only have a smaller HD but also half as much ram for a minute difference in price.

Acer vs Asus

Obviously the this machine is 2 1/2 years newer than the Asus 1000he and wins the spec-war hands down. However below are a few key points that really stand out for me as a casual user (word processing & websurfing):

My main peeves with this new Acer over my old Asus are:

a) Reflective glossy screen with lots of glare.

b) No light indicator for camera on/off

c) Function key is only on one side of the keyboard so to adjust a function, both hands are needed

d) Fewer screen brightness options darkest setting on Acer is still too white in low-light conditions

e) Soft flexible keyboard key's not as springy or responsive as Asus' chiclets.

f) Shorter battery life. My old Asus started at 10hrs+ with Wifi at second to lowest brightness and still squeaks out 8hrs. This new Acer only pushes 7hrs at a comparable brightness setting.

g) Lack of built-in BT (I use for tethering)

h) There is no pre-programmed function button for resolution or display size adjustment. It all has to be done through the Control Panel

Despite all of the above, I do love my new netbook. I love the 11.6" screen (compared to the 10.1") and the better resolution. I also love how there is an HDMI-port in addition to a VGA-port. The new water-drop design and tapered edges make the Acer look smaller and thinner despite being the same as the Asus.

Overall this is a lot of computer in a small package at a reasonable price and I would not hesitate to recommend this to others.

Buy Acer Aspire One AO722-0022 Notebook AMD Dual-Core Processor C-60 (1.00GHz) 11.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 10 Now

If you want an incredibly fast 11.5 inch netbook this is the one. I can't believe the speed. Also the display is very bright which some have complained about but I happen to like it as I work in low light conditions often. My impression is that due to the blazing speed this is a keeper. Just about everyone will be delighted with this, as am I.

I want to mention a few tiny things that kept me from giving this five stars.

I am replacing a three year old Asus eee PC netbook with this.

Cons:

1. The case isn't as sleek as the streamlined little Asus. This is more boxy and the hinges in particular are downright ugly. I wonder why any computer manufacturer wouldn't include great design of the computer as an obvious way to help sell them.

3. This is way heavier. Of course I am willing to lug around an extra 1.5 pounds for that extra 3 gigs of ram and faster processor. This is truely a speed demon.

4. This one seems unforgivable: there is no light to tell you when the cam is on!

Come on, those little LED lights cost what, 10 cents? There were a few times when the only way I knew my cam was still on was that little light! I don't know how to check to make sure it goes off on this.

6. It is RED HOT on the bottom. The fan is on but it is hot enough to iron clothes with.

I am wondering if those tiny circuits are going to quickly fry.

But after waiting around forever for that little Asus to get around to doing it's job this is wonderful. Everything happens in a flash on this. Loving it! And I suspect just about most people will too.

I got mine at the local "big box" store that starts with a W and I feel it was a fair price. I had to order it online and pick it up. There are lots of different similar models of the Acer Aspire One so make sure you get one with 4 gigs of ram for about $50 more, it's well worth it, and the processor is slightly faster too. I paid around $400 for mine. Amazon has a model about the same for the same price, but a different model number.

I can't tell it's any different from the one I got from reading the description.

Some models have Bluetooth but if I need it I can get a Dongle that plugs into the USB port here on Amazon for twelve dollars.

Seems to be a great incredibly speedy netbook so far.

And it has an HDMI port to stream movies to my TV with. Love that!

I think you will be pleased with this netbook.

edit: I've been using this for about five weeks and it appears the hard drive suddenly died. I was afraid of this since it heats up so bad. It just died and won't boot no matter what. Started making a little hiccup sound every few minutes then while watching a movie on it, then whamo, dead. I'm very upset.

Now I have to deal with the whole mess of customer service. I spent a couple of hours trying various ways to boot it without luck.

I've never had any computer die before after a month. So my new recommendation is DO NOT BUY.

I now see many other reviews here for various Acer Aspire One models where the exact same thing has happened.

edit number 2: After struggling with this for 3 whole days I finally got the

"eRecovery Partition" to function, which is the recovery partition of last resort that

Acer includes for just such an emergency in a non booting computer.

As the computer is just starting press ALT while you at the same time press F10 multiple times to bring up the eRecovery screen. From here you can basically re install windows.

I had to try this twice before it works. I have no idea what happened. I would have sworn the hard drive was fried. My data was lost but at least it is working again.

hmm.....I think I would look at a Dell or Gateway after this experience.

This machine packs power. Acer has given 4gb to this netbook which make up for the processor, however the processor is much better than you see on many netbooks. It is dual core which lets it out-compete intel atom single core processors. In addition the processor is very economic with its energy usage, as is the small screen, which allows this netbook to get a true 6.5 hours. The 4gb memory means that it comes with 64-bit Windows 7. Also the display is a full 1366x768 which means it has the same resolution as almost every 13.3" notebook. At the same time all of this remains in a 11.6 inch, 3.4 pound unit, which is light enough to make it feel the same as basically any other netbook. It doesn't feel cramped and the touchpad's features work well enough to make it an easily navigable system. It plays HD internet video and has both VGA and HDMI connectivity plus ethernet and 3 USB 2.0. It also has a 500 GB hard drive which is very uncommon in netbooks. This machine can easily be compared to many 13" notebooks in its speed and hardware while a netbook in size and energy consumption. At the price point there is nothing better on the market.

Very good option to consider if like me, you want a Windows 7 machine before they disappear from the marketplace, and you want a travel size notebook (11.6" screen is perfect for me) with a full keyboard, but don't want to shell out the bucks for the sleeker ultrabooks or settle for a Chromebook. Another key feature for me on this model is that it has a 6 cell battery which effectively allows me to use it most of the day untethered from the power cord. Very beefy Memory (4 GB) and Hard Drive (500 GB) for this price point, but one shortcoming is that the Processor is just adequate (listed as 1.00 GHz but really 1.37 it would be better to have one 2.0 or higher.) It's fast enough for email, surfing the web, downloading music and e-books, watching You Tube videos, etc., but don't even think about gaming. The machine runs cool and quiet and the fan rarely comes on. Nice that it has an HDMI output so you can easily hook it up to a HD TV. A potential shortcoming is that it doesn't have a backlit keyboard but the keyboard is easy to see in dim light and shouldn't be a problem unless you're completely in the dark. The touchpad is not half bad, but easy enough to add an external mouse (the mouse and touchpad can operate simultaneously, making it seamless to switch back and forth). Screen glare is about average, shouldn't be a problem for most unless you are in very harsh lighting. Stylewise it's OK, but certainly not a sexy choice compared to the touchpads or ultrabooks which are sleeker and about a pound lighter. Then again, you don't have to worry as much about this one getting swiped, and even if does get lost or stolen, at this price, it's not such a big deal. In any case, it suits my needs quite well, and I'm very glad to not be lugging my old laptop around with me anymore when I travel.

HP dv6-6c50us (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop

HP dv6-6c50us LaptopThis is such a powerful laptop! It just runs extremely fast and the feel of the keyboard is lovely. The sound from the laptop speakers are super loud and retains some of the bass sounds too. I'm also a gamer. This runs amazing with games. I have games that use up a lot of gb's and it runs smoothly. like butter! I recommend this computer!

Great laptop for the price! Comparable computers are priced upwards of $1000 without discounts. The DV6-6C53NR is featured online with one or two noticable differences. A dedicated video card from AMD which is the 7690 M XT and a high def screen. If you know that you'll have no need of dedicated graphics then this is a solid choice. For those of you looking for easy on the go gaming take another look at the DV6-6C53NR. A downside is that there is no blu-ray player but if you want to pay extra $$ then you can buy a custom configuration direct from HP. Overall I am very happy because this computer takes a lot of the guess work out of making configuration choices in the HP dv6 product line. I recommend this to anyone in the market for a new laptop.

The screen on this laptop has an incredibly pronounced screen-door effect, to the point that I had to return it because it was causing me headaches. The hardware specs are a good value, but the display all but renders this laptop impossible to use. And it wasn't just me; I showed it to a bunch of other people, and they all saw the same bothersome screen door. Also, it wasn't just that one laptop--I did an exchange and got another laptop (good work by Amazon for the quick, no-hassle turnaround), and it had the exact same issue.

Runs great, has good memory, and it even has voice control! Has 4 usb ports great for storage, it also has HDMI which is my favorite port. Received many compliments no cons. This laptop has the specs of many high end laptops. Great laptop Great price!

I bought this laptop 1 month ago and haven't opened the package. when I checked it many days ago, the laptop is working good, but only one exception, the charger is not working. It's not the adapter, it's the charger inside the laptop, when i use by battery, it's ok, but only plug the charger in the laptop, i see the LIGHTNING in the connection. the power didnt going the battery as well as the laptop without battery. I dont wanna touch it anymore.
