Very massive and good Ultrabook, with a bigger mSata SSD for the system it is very fast, the only weakness is the poor LCD Screen quality.

I ordered this yesterday evening (shortly around 5pm) with 2 day shipping option and received it today around noon (faster than expected)!!! The laptop is just as described in the ad. I own an older Toshiba with (Pentium with intel video) which lags on some games and have been shopping for a model with a dedicated video card... this laptop has no problem running ultra settings on games such as skyrim and SWTOR(still in the process of installing my other games).I was looking for a laptop to replace my older desktop and this one seems to be the one.
My first windows 8 machine, so I am still figuring that out... I will be ordering more RAM for this laptop (it came with 6 I'm going to take it to 16)
As far as what I use it for (programming, gamming, videos internet etc.... this is a great priced nice running laptop... I'm sure a laptop such as alienware would put this one to shame but as far as I can see this less expensive model runs my games just fine.

Stylish laptop with a nice layout. The problem with this laptop is the lack of backlit keys. Amazing how you don't realize you miss that feature till it's not there. I bought my Chromebook Pixel direct from Google, fully expecting to return it within the 15-day return period once I had taken it for a spin. But, you know what? It was so good... I kept it! Despite the hefty price tag.Having used other Chromebooks such as the "cheep and cheerful" Samsung Chromebook (Wi-Fi, 11.6-Inch), and being more concerned with their function rather than their form, I surprised myself by falling in love with the potentially gimmicky and indulgent features that set the Chromebook Pixel apart from other Chromebooks:
1. The display really is awesome, even when simply browsing the web and noticing the sheer sharpness of the on-screen characters.
2. The sound is really awesome, nice and loud despite the fact that you can't see the speakers (which are hidden under the keyboard).
3. The touch screen is surprisingly useful for scrolling up and down through web pages and documents, and I seem to be able to hit the right buttons on screen with less hit-and-miss than I have experienced (for example) when operating the Microsoft Surface (32GB) web browser in desktop mode.
4. I love the solid feel and square simplicity of the aluminium casing on the Chromebook Pixel.
As explained in The Chrome Book (Third Edition): The Essential Guide to Cloud Computing with Google Chrome and the Chromebook, all Chromebooks are born equal in the sense that you should be able to do pretty much the same things on all of them. But it's so much more pleasurable to do those things on this beautiful machine. And I didn't expect to say this!
Why four stars rather than five? Only the price. But I guess that if you want quality... you have to pay for it.
So, all in all, this is a great deal, once you factor in the free storage and the free 4g LTE allowance. Tip: if you have a Verizon business account, get in on unlimited data plans and then you're golden. The other bonus for me for this is obviously the display, the touch screen, the stability, and the integration with Android/Chrome devices.I bought this straight from the Google Play store, but Amazon's price is competitive. No matter where you get yours from, I think that you are really going to like it.
Speed. This machine, with its i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB SSD is every bit as fast as my Quad Core i7 windows machine that has twice as much RAM and also has a SSD. As long as you are on a good network connection, everything you do on this machine is pretty much instantaneous.
Build quality. Apple has nothing on this machine in terms of build quality. It is solid. In terms of build quality and materials, it is equal to a MacBook Pro and better than my HP Elitebook. Solid quality.
Screen. The screen is the main reason I bought this machine, and I wasn't disappointed when it arrived. The resolution is awesome for someone who likes to fit a lot of data on the screen at a time (in spreadsheets) or just someone who likes crisp beautiful graphics. I love the aspect ratio, resolution, and touch interface.
Touch. Speaking of the touch screen, I don't use it that much. It works great, and I love having the option of reaching up and touching the screen to do things.
Keyboard. The keyboard on this machine has a great feel. I love typing on it.
Storage. Having only 32GB of onboard storage scares me. I would never replace my primary computer with something so `cloud based'. That said, this is not my primary computer. Therefore, not having the space onboard to store all my stuff isn't a big deal, and is actually in line with the way that I work.
OS. I still prefer Windows 7 for my primary computer, but for an ancillary machine like this, Chrome is fine. It works great. The only way someone could use this as their only computer is if everything they do is available in the Cloud. If you need to run productivity software like Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, or Premiere, on your machine, than you'll need to stick to Windows or Mac.
If you know what you are getting into with Chrome, then I strongly recommend you check this computer out. It is obviously more expensive than the other Chromebooks, but it is fair considering the build quality and what you get for the money.This is a lovely device, and although the price tag might make one wince, if you have the means there is no other screen like this in the world. It makes a hell of a difference once on arrival and continues to dawn on you as you use it over the course of days/weeks.OK, let's be clear. The Pixel is something special. It is a work of art, an engineering triumph, and a game changer. You really have to experience it to fully understand it. I have been using Chromebooks for a couple of years, the first Acer model, then the Samsung 5 550 model. Both decent for what they cost, but with limitations as far as quality and performance. Samsung performed better, Acer actually had the nicer display. So I use them and I understand ChromeOS and the experience it delivers. I also understand the virtues it brings and the trade-offs you make in exchange. I have some excellent Windows Notebooks accumulated over the years, a tablet and other similar devices. So I know the gear, the OS, and what to expect.
I read probably every review of the Google Pixel online and all the comments. Thankfully, there were some good reviews in all the chaff. But...you really have to see, touch, and use the Pixel to know. That said, I ordered mine sight unseen...a man of faith. ;)
I have always felt the physical limits of the low cost devices were a mixed blessing. Yes, cheap is good and has it's attractions. But if you spend untold hours online as I do, you begin to long for a nice keyboard and, especially, a nice display for tired eyes. Also, as someone who enjoys art, photography and videography as hobbies, a good display is something I require. I appreciate the value of having a good one and am willing to pay for it. Life is too short to endure the crappy displays so prevalent these last many years. Thankfully, that's now changing.
So...to me, the Google Pixel, while expensive, was something of which I could understand the value proposition on offer. The minute I got mine, I knew. This was what I had been looking for, not just in a Chromebook, but as my primary computing device. Yes, damn expensive (even though I got a very good deal on mine), but worth every penny to me.
Incredible display, gloriously clear text and beautiful colors and images. Excellent keyboard, one of the best I have used on a notebook. And absolutely the best trackpad/touchpad I have ever used in my life. What a joy! I feel no need for an external mouse at all and that's exceptional, because I feel that way about no other notebook. Perfect right out of the box. No false taps or errors. It simply works. (For those who have experienced the truly abysmal touchpads on many recent highend notebooks, this will catch your attention and I hear your sigh of relief!)
An "intelligent" back-lit keyboard...best I've used (in a thin ultra-portable size device). Fabulous tactile feel and response. And the perfect size and shape! The Pixel is exactly the right size. That is no small thing. And the screen is exactly the right size and the perfect ratio (3:2), same as my photographic images. At working distance, the width is correct for your eyes and the height as well. I can live with wide displays and even prefer them for certain things. But the 16:10 and 3:2 ratios have always seemed the best to me for general use.
The quality of the display and the appearance of text reminds me of the very expensive typesetting machines I used many years back when I worked in publishing. They had very expensive high resolution monitors for displaying fonts with precision...just as the Pixel. My eyes are loving this.
The build quality. The elegance of the design. If you have to work long hours online and then you are crazy enough to also want to play longs hours online...well, then you might rejoice at using such a finely crafted rig, one where you enjoy it every time you open the lid, or feel the solid mass and quality as you pick it up. I value good gear highly, so this is a natural pleasure for me.
The speakers are also outstanding. The stereo separation is excellent. The tonal qualities are very good for a small unit such as this. Music is very pleasant. Good clarity, plenty of volume. The tonal range seems very good, bass is meager, of course, but overall the sound is very good and you can get by without headphones or speakers (though, of course, either will improve the sound). Sound while watching videos/movies/Netflix/Amazon Instant Video and so on is also fine. Never did I feel I had to go looking for my bluetooth speakers. Perfectly acceptable sound for a portable device.
It is nice to use something where everything feels right, works well, and you never think...oh, I wish it had a better screen, or keyboard, or whatever. That is worth a little extra in my book. Watching movies is fantastic. Great contrast, black levels, detail, color...and it was weird at first. I am so used to having to adjust the screen for the best image...here the image quality is constant...no need to adjust the display angle...move left or right, stand up, sit down...the image still looks great. Amazing. Good image quality and a good video/movie experience are a hard requirement for me and the Pixel delivers.
The free terabyte of cloud storage is nothing to sneeze at, either. It's free for three years. At the end of three years, you get to keep everything you have stored there indefinitely, but must pay if you wish to add more. Google Drive as it's called is well integrated with the File Manager and is very easy to use and quite convenient. It's worth $1800 if you bought it outright, so a nice bonus. (If you are a small business, this is something to consider. A terabyte of Google managed storage at your disposal and an excellent high-end notebook...hmmmm.)
The Pixel comes in a nice box with a magnetic latch (mirroring that of the Pixel display). There is no manual, per se, but there are extensive 'getting started' items in an included app of that name and plenty of info online and on the unit itself. And, of course, if you've already used a Chromebook, as I have, then you're all set. There are a bunch of useful apps preloaded, such as the main offline apps you might want (Gmail offline is very nice), and it automatically syncs up with your apps, bookmarks, and other content as ChromeOS is designed to do. So, whichever of my chromebooks I use, I can access everything and it will always be up to date. Sweet!
At about 8.75 x 11.75 inches (slightly larger than a sheet of paper) it's very portable and easy to handle. And the solid feel and heft are a pleasure in use. This rig is about as close to perfect as you can get as far as design and build. It really is that good. Really.
The ChromeOS which elicits so much comment and sometimes scorn is, in my view, an equally great asset. I have been in IT nearly all my life and have been living and breathing computers and tech since I was a child. I have owned and used an incredible variety of units, from the Commodore, Apple, Amiga days til now, and worked with Linux in the late 80's and 90's, back when only a few hundred people had ever heard of it. I have spent countless hours installing and maintaining both hardware and software. I know the nitty, gritty details quite well. I have power-user rigs at hand. Maybe that's why I understand and value what Chromebooks are all about. First of all, the security. For daily use, nothing beats a Chromebook for security. Reliability. Synchronization across all of your chrome devices. Ability to easily wipe the unit clean and start fresh -without losing anything, without having to constantly backup and manage disk, without having endless updates, viruses, and other annoying problems popping up. The Chromebook is the most stable, reliable, secure computing environment I have ever used. The hardware and OS are designed for security from the ground up. Back in my UNIX Sys V days I championed thin clients and I still appreciate their virtues.
Chromebooks are the perfect notebook for 80% of the people who just want to do the common things like read email, surf the web, post their photos, watch streaming video, listen to music, and so on. Very few people actually edit video or photos at any level that requires Sony Vegas or Photoshop. Having spent many hours helping friends and colleagues with computer and software issues, I know how happy they'd be with a Chromebook if they made the switch. But, though it's popularity is growing fast, it's still a small part of the overall market. That may well change. The Pixel stands as a beacon as to what is possible.
I just use it. It works. I enjoy what I'm doing and can focus on what I am doing and not the tool I am using to do it. Though, as a techie, I do stop now and then to admire the elegance of the Pixel. For me, it is well worth the price I paid.
Pros:
Very fast web surfing, faster than any of my windows notebooks. Web pages look great, easy to scroll and zoom.
Gorgeous 2560x1700 Display has beautiful colors, contrast, and detail. Everything looks good.
Solid aluminum body looks great, feels great. Top quality build.
Keyboard is one the best I've seen. Intelligent back-lighting works very well. Use Alt-BackSpace for DELETE. ;)
Touchpad/Trackpad might be the best in existence. Works exceptionally well.
Elegant design means a pleasure to use, everything just works and well. Ultra-portable.
Chromebooks are very secure, data syncs automatically across devices, very stable and reliable.
Includes a Terabyte of Google managed online storage (an $1800 value) probably the best quality cloud storage on offer.
Has a touch screen that works well.
Cons:
Expensive. (But you get what you pay for.)
ChromeOS wifi connect can be flaky sometimes (a known software issue which hopefully will be fixed by an update).
Keyboard missing keys like Delete, Home, End, Page Up/Down, etc. (There are equivalents, like Alt-BackSpace for DELETE)
ChromeOS still maturing. An occasional minor quirk here and there.
Battery life is only 5 hours or so, could be better. Mitigated a bit by the nearly instant on/off cycle of the Pixel.
Display is glossy and reflections can be an issue in some lighting situations, but very bright screen means usually a minor issue.
ASUS R704VD-RB51 17.3" Notebook PC
I was in the market for a replacement for my 10 year old desktop. After speaking with numerous I.T. friends of mine, the ASUS was highly recommended. I absolutely live this notebook. The 17.3 inch screen is great. The ease of use and simplistic design have made me happy. I have "pulled the plug" on the old desk top.
Also hard to see function keys on bottom, they are black and you need a flashlight to read which ones have a blue lights.
I wouldn't buy another one.
ASUS X83VB-X2 14.1" Notebook PC - REFURBISHED
my board is out for RMA which I would buy another even if it was unfixable (ASUS P6x58d extreme edition). In the mean time I have this little laptop doing all my work. Everything from CPU to memory is discrete (upgradable). It's currently hooked-up with an HDMI connection to a Samsung T240 monitor and also my desktop keyboard, mouse, headset, gamepad and a printer. I still have unused USB ports. My X832B-X2 even came with Windows 7 and was refurbished by the good people at Asus. Gods honest truth I even bought one for my son who plays games on his. Before spending big bucks on a new over priced laptop check this one out.
Toshiba Satellite C675-S7106 Laptop Computer / 17.3-inch HD Display Screen / Intel Core i3-2350M 2.
Toshiba seems to be reviewed well, and I've heard they're good with their warranties. I had been looking for a laptop to use in the kitchen, when i can't access one of the pcs in the house, for a few weeks. I did'nt need too much ram, but I knew I wanted an Intel processor, preferably one of the core models. This one has the core i3, which so far is great. Anyone can get this thing up and running. After powering it up, it recognized my wifi network and asked me to select which signal I wanted and to enter the network's password. It also was easy to join my existing Homegroup of the other 2 pcs in the house, so now I can access files/photos/vids from the other 2 on this laptop and vice versa. I also did a test by printing an email and that worked fine as well. I purchased a Logitech M315 wireless mouse with the nano receiver to use with this even though it has the built in mouse pad with the 2 buttons for left / right click. using the built in mouse is easy enough, but i prefer a regular mouse. No installation for that either, just plug into the usb port and it was recognized and working.I bought this laptop and the mouse at a large electronics retailer ( don't know the lagality of naming the store ) whose name rhymes with "Vest Fry ". Anyway, the price, this week-while on sale, was only $399.99 for the laptop and the mouse was only $14.99; so i'd say it was a great deal. i just noticed Amazon's price dropped a bit today as well.
One mistake i made, was not even thinking to check if the laptop had built in wifilike the kindle Fire or other tabletsIt does! So, I actually bought another ae2500 usb adapter thinking i needed to plug that in to catch the signal from my router like the other pc in my daughter's room. Nope, don't need it. the built in wifi works great, so I'll be returning that item to the store.
It came with some promo items like: a $10. EMusic card for downloading songs, and a coupon code for 15 % off Toshiba laptop accessories and service plans. I do plan on using that Toshiba code to buy an extra lithium ion battery as a back up so I can have double the battery life should I need it.
They reccommend you create system restore discs or use a flash drive to do it. It's very simple to do, and would be a way to restore your laptop to out of the box condition if there ever was a need to do so (crash, etc). It will tell you before you start how many discs or what size flash drive you would need to have. i needed 5 discs to complete it. Just remember to label them in sequence so you know what order to insert them in ( disc 1 of 5 ; disc 3 of 5 etc)
I'm very pleased with the purchase, especially at the price i got it for. I mainly just either watch videos on Hulu + or Netflix or use it for web browsing, so the amount of memory for my purposes is ample. It is not too heavy either, though I do find it a bit wide, but not so much so that it's a problem. Originally I was looking at 15.6 in laptops, but just couldn't resist this one when I saw the price and the processor.

One last thing; I plan to get my own Internet security suite as my license for other 2 pcs is almost up. I'll get another AVG 2 year 3 user paid Internet security, as I had zero problems with that for last few years. I did however activate the Norton so I have some protection until that ships. The reason I did activate it was because it did Not ask me for credit card infojust name, email etc. I know then that although Iwill have to uninstall the Norton when the AVG comes, they can't turn around in a year or a month and renew the antivirus because they don't have any $$ info. That actually happened to me last year after the pc was 1 year old, and the store I bought it at which had a Kapers anti v for free 6 months with the pc I bought, had actually charged my bank card for another year of the anti v. I had uninstalled it before the 6 months were up to load the AVG, but in order to get that initial free protection, they had my cc# from the pc purchase because it was a package deal. They just went ahead and charged me and I never knew, because I had switched over to my AVG, and also had a different email. I actually thought someone had stolen my bank card #'s and had gone to that store to buy something. Eventually, after calling the store's cust svc, they told me what happened. Since then, I've been very wary about such things, and i never give a card for a trial period on something unless I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep it. Just an FYI, because I was pleasantly surprised that they will protect my pc for a trial without first taking my $ info. thought that was cool.
1. the screen is very nice. 17.3", very bright and clear. Looks like Macbook pro.
2. It comes with the new Intel second generation i3 CPU. It's fast enough to run daily programs like office, Photoshop, etc..
3. The price is fair enough. A similar SONY or HP laptop will cost $600 plus.
4. I bought this one, upgraded the memory to 2X4gb, and replaced the hard drive with a Corsair Force 3 240 GB SATA 3 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive CSSD-F240GB3-BK
Now the system is even faster than my i7 desktop.
I highly recommend this laptop to all. And I suggest buyers like me, do the 2 upgrade, upgrade the memory to 8GB ( cost me $40 ) and replace the hard drive with a SSD ( cost me $300 ). Then this laptop will last at least 10 years.I purchased a Toshiba Laptop(C675-S7106) on March 24, 2012. 30 day return policy and 1 year warranty. Within 2 weeks I contacted Toshiba Customer Service regarding a problem with the internal speakers. It took an additional 2 weeks before a technician determined there was a problem with the laptop. I was advised that the computer could be returned to the company for repair, but, I would have to pay a $25 "shipping / handling fee." Despite my argument Toshiba stood fast on that fee.My question is, why, if I purchased a new laptop,with warranties,reported a problem within 2 weeks, it was determined by Toshiba that there was a defect, why should I have to pay anything. Very poor customer relations. I will be VERY, VERY, wary next time I purchase a consumer electronics product. My research will focus on quality of the product and quality of customer service. Very Disappointed.Computer is great. Full size keyboard and big widescreen display. Processor is fast, memory and hard drive are more than enough. Only complaint is the speakers, they are terrible. Headphones and or external speakers sound fantastic, but built in speakers are bad!I got this laptop from Best Buy for only $399 and I am so surprised to see this selling on Amazon for 509 bucks!
This laptop is really good, fast and wide screen, great resolution and vivid display except for the speaker which sound like the squeak of a mouse. You better buy it a pair of new desktop speaker or a set of good headphones.

GREAT Laptop! It's quite; fast, great for multitasking and videos. I do not have anything negative except for the hard drive is split in to 2...C& D. However, Do Not Purchase this computer from Circuit City. I had called about the belling to make sure that it was done correctly and the person at the other end of phone was about to rip my head off! Kept telling me that it was not his problem and had no idea to whom he should refer me too. I guess they don't need the business. Stay away from CirCuitCity...

UPDATE!!!!!!
Been using the laptop for a little over a month now....holy toledo....I'm running 16gb of RAM, 4 slots 4Gigs each....swapped out the stock HDD and installed a seagate momentum xt with the latest bios....SWEET! The HDD it came with is fantastic, I just wanted to run the hybrid drive to see if it is faster, indeed it is! The 16gigs of RAM might seem like overkill, but RAM is super cheap these days and I figured why not?....the only time I maxed out the RAM was when I was scrubbing a HDD it was running 15.2 Gigs, you may notice a nice bit of overhead when watching a movie on a large screen through this thing....lol......the build quality is definetely there,I dropped it a couple of days ago straight down on the front (keyboard side) edge, nothin' took it like a champ, this should last me a good few years....games!!!!!
IT WILL GAME! Running Oblivion 60ish FPS approx, Batman Arkham was I think avg. 34 FPS....hell, I think it will run Crysis!
The only way to upgrade this rig is to throw down an ssd, something I don't have the funds nor compulsion to do.
The upgrades are more for my taste, not from necessity.....this laptop NEEDS NOTHING....I'm just weird.

I bought this laptop last July.....i mostly use it for web browsing, music, skype....ect. I also play minecraft on it and cannot have any other windows open because it creates lag. It is ok at surfing the web....a little laggy but not bad.Hope that helped!!

I bought this laptop on 10/11/2011 for $299 $317.99 with taxes. I loved it the first week. The second week I had to restart the computer 3-4 times by rebooting. Now it seems the battery it not working properly either. I unplug to use just the battery & I get a black screen (even when it is plugged as well). I have to restart several times before it starts working. I will take back to Staples to have them take a look. Follow the update!!!Oh yeah, the computer is a lot slower then I am used to, but thought it would be good at this price. Unlucky me.

Also, this computer is fast enough to run all of the applications that an office user would want. The 4GB of ram is more than I need for web browsing, photoshop, or coding. Moreover, the side number pad has been helpful for data entry in excel.
As a cautionary word, this computer doesn't have good capacity for gaming on the level of DoTA or high-action 3D games because of its lack-luster integrated graphics card. At the same time, the monitor is quite vivid. Still, I can enjoy playing any 2D games on this computer.
Lastly, the speakers on this are really weak and drop off early in the bass, as expected from a pair of cheap tweeters. If you like music, do yourself a favor and get a nice pair of headphones or a set of speakers. That is all.
At this price-point (I paid $300 at Staples) it is a great deal.

Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC VGN-P588E/Q
I've owned this exact unit for more than six months now. I purchased it strictly for road trips, as I have several custom-built desktops and a larger/luggable Lenovo notebook at home. It's a terrific travel UMPC. You need to get used to the still-usable smallish keyboard (with a Return key way too close to the up/down arrow keys) and the very tiny fonts/display (even when enlarged to 125%), but still very good. It's terrific having the SDD instead of an accident-prone spinning HDD. There's no need for a separate PC case, it fits right in my carry-on along with its very tiny power supply.My only issue is: even upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium with all Intel and Sony video driver patches, it still can't do video of any quality or size without stuttering/hiccup'ing, which is very annoying for any netbook/notebook in this premium price range.

I did not purchase this from amazon. I rarely make reviews, but this time i had to.I will say I am picky, this laptop has what i was looking for in physical stats--new gen amd proc, 14" screen, 4gb mem, win7 pro, and 802.11N wireless over 5ghz (most use the crowded 2.4 ghz range), and price.
the deal breaker for me is this laptops screen SUCKS, which isn't something you can look up stats on prior to buying. The viewing angle is unacceptable. Looking perfectly, directly on--the very sides of the screen show that off-coloring typical of LCD's viewed from an angle too far off. Now when you start viewing it at less than perfect angles it gets much worse. Its really annoying that i simply cant lay down/recline what-have you and still have the screen look correct.
Some minor aesthetics i noticed:the keyboard is rather spaced out between keys, unit is thicker than i would expect (i dont have high standards in this--but for a modern laptop it is fairly thick), and there is an uneasy flex to the plastic if the laptop is picked up from the bottom left (where the DVD is). DVD also uses non-standard bezel, so it pops out much like a full tower CDrom in width.
Overall, if the screen wasn't terrible, i would easily have given 4.5 stars.

I always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

I got this laptop a while ago because it seemed to be a good fit for all the specs, plus it was pretty sharp IMO. It was great for a little while, everything was fast and worked perfectly. After a while it started getting a bit slower and now it makes this awful sound. kind of a grinding, clicking sound. I am not sure if this is the fan or the hard drive, or if it can be even be fixed. So based on my experience with this computer I would recommend you to keep looking and find something better. I know for a fact that there are better computers for cheaper prices. I came from Brazil anxious to buy a computer here and I would like a Sony Vaio. I really liked it. Until now, I did not have any problems. I do not understand a lot about computers but I know that it is a great computer.

I really adore this mobile computer. I am a mobile person and the size is perfect for every day commuting and long-distance travel; it has a small footprint and can fit on any surface be it an airplane seat tray or a lap. The computer does not have a disc drive (which I think is a plus), freeing it to be made very thin; it is not Macbook Air thin, but still very thin. One of my favorite features is the touchpad. It recognizes Apple like gestures and is free from the casing, so that it can physically move up and down when pressed. This gives it a very responsive feel akin to the Apple touchpad. The keyboard has keys separated by the case molding. It is not a full size keyboard, but I find the Chiclet-like keys helps prevent pressing more than one key at a time when typing; it also looks very cool.I like a fast computer and this Acer has a lot horsepower for its price range since it has an Intel Core i5, instead of a Core i3. This means it comes with Intel's Turbo Boost technology. I believe the Turbo Boost makes a big difference in a laptop where power consumption is directly related to battery life. Most of the time a lot of horsepower isn't needed, e.g. web surfing, so battery power is saved. But when you need to open or run a demanding program like MATLAB (you'll see I love MATLAB) then Turbo Boost really shines and everything will run faster.
I took this computer to another level by upgrading to a solid-state hard drive and highly recommend this. The SSD makes boot up incredibly fast. (Note about installing Windows via USB: Format a USB (>4GB) with FAT32. Then extract a Windows Installation ISO to the USB using 7-zip. Super simple :)(Note 2: or use Clonezilla to clone the Windows that ships with the drive onto the new one.). With this setup the computer is very snappy. The computer boots in about 5 seconds. MATLAB opens on my laptop faster than my desktops!
I did not want to spend more than $800 on a new laptop. This laptop perfectly fits my computing needs and wants without breaking the budget. I think it is as cool as a computer can be without being a Macbook, which this computer clearly used as an inspiration. I don't believe in spending top-of-the-line money for laptops, because the dollar goes further in a desktop and laptops don't have as much longevity due to wear and tear (I'm pretty rough on laptops. They get banged around in my backpack when I bike around or travel). However, being unwilling to spend enough can result in an impotent laptop: more than a Chromebook (which are awesome in their own way, but specialized), yet not quite powerful enough for doing more than surf the web, write docs, and make slides; having a computer powerful enough to run MATLAB (or a similarly demanding program like Photoshop) was important to me. The Aspire V5-171 has met my needs and surpassed my expectations. It represents a fantastic value: it combines computing power and great aesthetics into a very convenient and mobile form factor.
The only caveat I can think of is this is not a "gamer's" laptop. However, it has the best integrated graphics chip Intel offers and will play a lot of modern games on the lowest visual settings at decent frame rates.
Finally, there are a few miscellaneous features that further prove how this laptop is the complete package. In addition to an HDMI port, there is also a VGA port. I think it is great to have both, because there is now the flexibility of giving a presentation on an HD screen or an older projector without needing to tote around extra adapters. There is also a USB 3.0 port to help future proof this machine. Another nice unheralded feature is the power cord, which does not have a "Ghostbusters brick". Instead it has the adapter plug directly into the wall; this seems to have reduced the size of the power cord and represents to me less of a trip hazard. My only wish is that the power cord would connect to the laptop using a magnet ala Apple (the ultimate in trip prevention), but I don't mind so much because this laptop comes in at such a nice price.
The memory and processor speed meet my requirement fully expected.

It might be helpful to describe my PREVIOUS computer. For the last two plus years I have been using an Acer one, 10.5" notebook. I had upgraded the ram to 2 GB. I never had anything that small before, but really I liked the size, and also the ACER quality (for the price).I did a lot of research before I bought this new ACER. I'm a tightwad and I didn't want to pay for any more than I needed. After the first week I am totally pleased.
One of the problems with the previous notebook was the undersized keys and keyboard. The move up to 11.5 inches has allowed for full sized, fully spaced keys. I'm a writer and I need a real keyboard that I can use anywhere. Someone else referred to these keys as "chiclets". Yes, they protrude up individually through the casing. They're very easy to type on. It verges on fun. The only thing that concerns me is that they may accumulate dirt, which may be difficult to get out. But, that can't be any worse than most other keyboards.
I don't do any gaming; So, the 6 GB is really great. The processor and RAM are quite adequate for word processing, spreadsheets, surfing, and watching Netflix.
It is super slim, portable and very light. Note, however, that the power cable is on the right side. I would prefer the left, but it's not a big deal.
The screen quality is very good for the price. The size of the screen is perfect. It is the smallest possible screen for a real keyboard. It is big enough for all the programs to run without size problems.
In regard to software: I was very skeptical of W8. I spent 3 or 4 hours familiarizing myself with it. I finally got it set up. Basically I only see the APPS screen when I boot. I go straight from there to a (more or less) familiar window's desktop. It's working OK, but I'm thinking about defecting to Linux Ubuntu.
I also may install an SSD drive when I do that. This is not because I am dissatisfied with what came in the box. I think it's a great value for what I paid.
Now, a word to the wise about MS office. MS is really trying to rope everyone who needs office into annual fees, high prices, and so forth. I refuse to do it.
I first tried Open Office, but soon learned that they (apache? I think) are not keeping it up. I had trouble with migrating excel files and formatting. But, Libre Office is really great. They're on top of it. It's open source. It's free and it works. It doesn't have all the features of the later versions of office, but for my needs, it is just fine.

I would give this laptop a Four except that its battery life is quite poor. After adjusting the power settings for minimum power, I have trouble getting more than three hours from it. Acer should have give it a larger battery. Acer doesn't have a larger battery available for after market either.Like the machine, hate the battery!

I used to consider other laptop brands as my favorite for years. But some day bowsing Amazon to replace my old HP 530 (Core Duo, 500 HDD and 3GB RAM) I founded it. I liked the small size, I feel very attracted to the processor, and the weight just catched me. I have been using for my job a 6 pound, 14" i7, and I was looking for something lighter, more portable. Of course, I have my worries for the Acer brand, because the poor design from past years, and tought a lot about quality issues. After searching for internal components, and realizing that the internal components where provided by Intel, It gave me some good thinking about it.I read about the specs, specially the HDD, but I have been wanting to do some testing of SSD instead.
I also checked all the reviews for the Acer V5-171. I didn't find the exactly same Model Code I wanted to purchase, but those reviews gave me a very good idea of what I was going to have.
I decided to purchase the Acer, but decided to have the i5-3337 processor. Little more expensive, but , and when it arrived, it came with Windows 8. This OS is OK, but I prefer Windows 7. Considering I have one SSD, then I decided to make the change.
I reinstalled the Win 7 OS, and downloaded the drivers from the Acer web page. WARNING: The driver for the WiFi for Windows 7 that I have downloaded never worked (I downloaded it several times, never functioned), so I have to check the generic driver and founded it as an Intel driver. Of course, on the SDD. I needed to do some mod to reduce 9MM to 7MM, but worked properly.
After doing some specific changes in BIOS, and downloading all the updates from Windows, I finally started using it. I really LOVE THIS ULTRA MOBILE LAPTOP. It does not get so hot (as the reviews says, actually you can use it and it will feel very comfortable ). Using it with the SSD now it boots in 14 seconds, and programs opens very fast. I decided that this will be my main computer, not just my travel laptop, because of the speed, the light weigth, and the great design. Acer, you have done a good product, I hope you made it to last.
