I liked this model a lot. It has modest RAM for a laptops of its age and is very durable. Well mine is anyways, it survived a yard fall with no damage. sure the keys start popping off once in a while, but it's simple to plug them back in. I'd recomend this one for people who are resonpsible, like vista, and are ok with 2 GB ram max. It can run most things well, but for more things that require high processig power and graphics, I'd say go get a newer laptop.

This is a great Laptop i have owned for 6 years now. It handels all my web design programs like flash, dreamweaver, photoshop, illistrator, and games like a champ. I did upgrade ram to 4gb to keep up with the demand and it works great. I do recommend this laptop if on a budget. This laptop can do it all, and the processor is fairly powerful. It surpassed all my expectations. It was in excellent condition,quick and fully functional. Only two drawbacks, battery died out quick and when scrolling down a website, the page would fragment a bit, but other than that it's a perfect piece of equipment for a university student or any corporate work. Highly recommend it if you don't want to break the bank.

HP Pavilion dv7-4280us 17.3-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC (Silver)

I've been using this computer for about 3 weeks now, and am quite happy with its performance and battery life. It has switchable graphics and automatically (unless disabled) switches between built-in graphics when battery powered and dedicated graphics (ATI HD6550) when wall cube powered. I don't use this computer for gaming, but the HD6550 is a fairly respectable card. Battery life is listed at 7.75 hours. I was originally seeing around 6 hours in my typical usage scenario (see note re change below). I am also pleased with its thermal management. When working hard it gets warm but not hot. Air exhaust is on the left, toward the back of the case, which is an acceptable location. Since it is billed as an "entertainment" laptop, there is a goodly amount of HP software installed for managing audio, video, photos, etc. I thought I would remove most of this, but found it to be relatively inoffensive and even useful at times. The hard drive is a generous 750 GB, so I wasn't too concerned about needing to free up space. I did disable the built-in backup management software in favor of adding a second 750 GB hard drive (this required purchasing an HP4000 series drive caddy and cable). I made the new drive (7200 RPM) the primary drive and relegated the slower 5400 RPM drive that came with the 4280 to backup. Having two hard drives did, of course, reduce battery life somewhat, but I still get around 5.5 hours not bad at all. I can now do backups in-situ via partition imaging, plus daily backups to an external USB drive. Regarding that the HP4280 has a powered eSATA port (combo USB and eSATA), which I use with a Seagate GoFlex Pro 750 GB drive with eSATA interface and it is fast (GoFlex pro uses 7200 RPM drive which matches the one I swapped in and made my boot drive).

There is also a fingerprint scanner which can be used to log in (password entry is still available as alternative). You have to spend a few minutes registering your fingerprint (plus one alternative print) but after that, you can log in by just swiping your finger over the scanner. It took some getting used to, but I now log in this way almost exclusively. One little trick I found place your finger over the scanner, then hesitate for just a bit (about 1/4 to 1/2 second) before swiping and it will read much more reliably. At least that's the case for me maybe I "trained" it that way. ;-)

My only real complaint is that the touch pad implementation is well, just awful. As has been noted by others, it's almost impossible to position the cursor and click to select without moving the cursor off target, and if you touch the case near the touch pad that moves the cursor. Really annoying. I added a Logitech M705 mouse which uses their tiny unifying receiver (I leave it plugged in all the time), and it works quite well, even with the receiver on the opposite side of the computer (that location works best for my carry case).

One last note this beasty has a blue ray player and Beats audio very nice combo for watching HD movies.

Overall, I am very happy with this computer. It lost one star for the schizoid touch pad and the slow hard drive.

Update 2011-05-10. Recently updated Synaptic Pointing Device drivers, and there were definite improvements in touch pad operation.

I am no stranger to laptops, this is my 6th. I've owned Dell, Toshiba and Asus laptops, this is my first HP. It is replacing my Toshiba x205-s9349 which at 3 1/2 years old has become sluggish and a couple of times shut off by itself signaling the end might be near. I spend all day (and night) on my laptop and use it for surfing, photography, watching streaming movies, updating my iPod and iPhone and watching Blu-ray movies. I also use it to watch streaming live events on ESPN3 such as ALMS racing and college football which on my old laptop I connected to my TV via 25FT HDMI TO HDMI Cable. After checking reviews and features, I found this model had great reviews and most of the features I wanted. It also was a few hundred dollars less then other computers with the same features (6gb ram, 750gb hd, Blu-ray reader, 17" display, HDMI out, 802.11n, Bluetooth). The only thing I was weary of was the Windows 7 64bit OS and running older programs. To date, I have had no issues and Windows 7 is similar to Vista, so not hard to figure out.

Sound, even though it has the Dr Dre Beats Audio, it still sounds about the same as my old Toshibia (although that system also had a highly touted Harman Kardon speaker/subwoofer system). Obviously sound is limited to the small size/speakers limitation of laptops.

HP Laptop reliability reputation. There was a report out a couple years back showing HP to have the worse reliability, in the upper 20% after 3 years. It was also noted that it makes the most laptops and that the smaller laptop makers, like Toshibia, had lower failure rates. To me, that study sounds flawed in that if there are so many more HP laptops, many more are going to need repair so I am not sure about the methodology of the study or if HP quality (or anyone else's) has changed since its been out.

UPDATE: I have had the computer for 9 months. 2 problems arose and were quickly fixed by HP. First, the A/C adapter stopped working. They shipped one no charge. For some reason Fed Ex shipped the part from SC to Atlanta and instead of going to the local distribution center here in metro Atlanta, it was sent to TX. So that delayed the part, not HP's fault though. I did not have to send the bad part back.

The second thing that happened, according to the H.P. Support Assistance software and third party S.M.A.R.T. software, I had some bad sectors on my hard drive, the kind that a Windows scan and fix can't help. So I contacted support, gave them the error code. They told me I needed a new hard drive and would have a supervisor call within 2 business days. The supervisor called the next day, Friday. He told me I would ship it out and I had 15 days to ship the bad one back. They take your credit card number and will charge it if they don't get the broken part back in the time allowed. It was stressed that if I sent it back after 15 days, they still won't refund the money. I got the feeling if I wasn't comfortable doing the swap, they would have me send the entire laptop in. They paid shipping of the part both ways. So, again, the distribution center is in SC and I am in Atlanta. The part arrived on Saturday, the next day. I bought an external USB drive, partitioned it so it was slightly smaller than the HD on the laptop. I followed the Windows 7 directions to make a mirror image which includes making a boot disc. It took a few hours to make the mirrors of c: and d: which was under 300GB total. d: is HP's backup partition. I swapped out the drives, and used the Windows boot disc with the external USB HD connected that had the mirror image and in a couple of hours, my computer was exactly like I had it before. HP sent discs, but I didn't need them by using Windows Backup. Once I made sure everything was right, I swapped back to the old disc and did a boot and nuke, erasing all content. One more swap and everything is great.

So, HP support has been great.

I bought this computer after researching on Consumer Reports for a laptop to replace our home computer (a Dell desktop). Once I narrowed down my choices to this computer and a Toshiba Satellite, I read the Amazon reviews for this computer and was convinced (espectially, when someone said that they bought it to replace their iMac). At first I was thinking of switching to an iMac, but after doing my research I found this computer to be the best rated for my specific needs. I have a shop on Etsy and need a computer with a lot of memory and the ability to run multiple programs at once. I have to say that I am VERY pleased with my decision! This computer is beautiful (much better looking than the pictures), fast, lightweight, and incredibly easy to set-up. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and within 10 minutes was ready to go! No software to load, no confusing user's manual, and very user-friendly. I was able to set-up my wireless internet connection and wireless printer in minutes with no complications. Windows 7 is an absolute pleasure to work with and I love the entire set-up of the computer. Also, the screen for this computer is huge and makes you feel like you're using a desktop :)

I've never purchased an HP product before, but I will definitely be a repeat customer in the future!

I read the reviews about thet touch pad and thought, "How bad could it be?" I did not realize how much I do use the touch pad until I got this computer. It's practically impossible to use. I bought a mouse and am trying to get used to that. Otherwise I really like it. I use it to play SL which is a huge test of a graphics test and it performs very well. If you buy it go ahead and get a mouse, don't try to beat the touch pad, you'll end up with sore fingers.

I've had this computer for about two months now. It was easy to set-up, had a fast processor, good graphics and screen quality, an enormous amount of memory, and a nice feel to the keyboard (although the tracking pad is useless). Unfortunately, I went to turn on this laptop recently and it failed to boot and emitted loud beeping sounds for several minutes. After three hours with an HP tech support person who had me open up the computer and reset a few hardware items and software, I ended up at the "please send your laptop to us for service." Yes, it's under warranty but I don't have my computer for 2 weeks and of course am missing deadlines. After I complained that a brand new laptop should work for longer than 2 months, the tech support person replied, "electronics are not guaranteed." Hm. Anyhow, I've been buying and using computers for 20+ years and have never encountered a new machine that has failed in two months.

UPDATE, September 5, 2011: In mid-August, HP fixed the keyboard and updated the BIOS so the computer worked for a few weeks more. Sadly, when I turned on the laptop today it proceeded to beep, had problems booting, and demonstrated keyboard failure again. If you buy this machine, make sure you back up your files daily. You'll need them.

HP Pavilion dv6-3160us 15.6-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Argento)

The specs on this laptop are really good. 4 Core AMD Processor will keep things moving at a pretty fast pace, although it ranks below Intel I7's, it still performs very well. Also a large hard drive and the light up keyboard is especially nice when working on things at night. However the best part about the laptop is the video card. The ATI Mobility Radeon(tm) HD 5650 was really the selling point for me. Standard video cards that come with lower end laptops are often the bare minimums and all too often hold the performance of a laptop back. Such is not the case with this laptop. The video card is phenomenal for the price of the laptop. Overall great laptop performance wise. It looks really sweet too. However there is one drawback with HP's and its the preloaded software. I don't know if other company's do it, but this one came loaded with stuff and really hinders the performance. I have a Windows 7 Ult disc purchased previously so I installed my own version after I played with the preloaded OS and software for a bit. Most of the drivers are on the HP website so there really wasn't any trouble finding them(if you choose to do this, make a recovery disc first!). But i know someone else said that if you press F11 on the start up and do the recovery option you can choose to reinstall windows with a minimal installation which will get rid of the preloaded software but still install all the drivers. Highly recommend though if your looking for an above average laptop with an excellent video card.

So far its been a great laptop. it has too many HP programs that i dont know if the are actually helpful but besides that... great keyboard very smooth and silent... the monitor its great and the fongerprint reader works fine... it runs a little bit hot in the bottom left side i think where the processor is, but only when the ventilation is reduced. i have a special table for laptops with ventilation in that area and i work in multiple projects at a time and the computer remains cold... (sorry if my english wasnt very good, im from venezuela)... i will make another review in 1 month to see if something change... i hope not... buy this laptop if you are looking for one of the best laptops for this price...

IMO PRO's:

3160 has a backlit keyboard and and that has helpful in where I can do work. I have been getting about 3.5 hours of use for the battery in the power-saving 4250 gpu and I only game when i have it plugged in (I only play wow so this is not a game review).

Other thoughts:

When using the better processor of the i7 over the Quad-AMD I did not see enough of a performance boost to warrant keeping the system over returning the 3052ns to Fry's when HP replaced another notebook I had with the 3160us. I had replaced the HDD with a 7200 RPM and upgraded the RAM to 6GB to make the processor the only difference. If you have a Quad but want to save money then get this model because all the other specs are the same except for the backlit keyboard and Ralink Wifi-BT adapter, also if you run UBUNTU Linux or Fedora 14 Linux then get the driver zip file from Ralink and follow the makefile commands to compile the driver from source code. I dual boot the 3160us and that was the only hiccup in Fedora but I did both for distro testing.

Now here on Amazon there is only a $100 difference but the invoice from HP showed the 3160us system as $741 and with tax at Fry's the 3052nr came to $1,092. You do the math and regardless of what the spec testing software says when you use both with clean installs and 1.5 seconds was the biggest time difference I could measure then I went AMD and never looked back.

After decided that my office would be the new baby room I had to find an acceptable laptop that I could use as a replacement desktop. I work as an IT network admin so I had lots of resources and staff to give me some information. Originally I really wanted something with a 17" screen but in order to get a laptop with a GPU that I wanted within my budget I settled for the smaller screen and less resolution. The overall feel of the laptop is high quality and I really like the aluminum panels. Another feature that I really like is the backlit keyboard. I wasn't expecting to get this feature on a less expensive laptop and it makes working with the laptop in the dark easy and can be turned off with one button. I've read I can't remember how many reviews and the negative comments about the mouse pad. Being that I would use my Razor gaming mouse I wasn't concerned about the pad. But, I found the pad to be very easy to use regardless of the other complaints. It's large and sensitive and can easily be adjusted. One of the features that is missing off my wish list was a blue ray drive. But hey, what do you want for 700 bucks! If it becomes a real issue for me there are inexpensive external drives that are super small and would fit in my travel bag. There are plenty of outputs for just about everything and the laptop is substantially lighter than my wife's two year old HP that's the same size.

The Windows 7 64 bit OS has been great with our workstations at work so no surprises with the laptop there. The quad core AMD processor has yet to even blink when asked to do anything. Preloaded software was minimal (I hate saying bloat ware, it just sounds juvenile) and I removed most of it. I probably will max out the memory but I've only had the laptop a few days so I'll make sure that everything is ok before spending the money to do the upgrade. Connecting to either a wireless or wired network was no problem and speed was great. The bio scanner is cool for password authentication and makes login into everything that much quicker. OK, now onto the important part, games. The dual GPUs work awesome! The Radeon HD 5650 is more than capable of some serious gaming. Connecting it to a larger monitor was also easy and the graphic didn't suffer any.

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and don't regret settling for a smaller monitor. I feel that the quality of the materials and construction will help this unit last a very long time. I don't know about battery life being that this will be used primarily at a desktop but it will be nice to be able to take it with me when I travel. One con that I will list is the keys to the left side of the keyboard. People who are used to typing on a standard keyboard with tab, caps and so on that are the end keys will be a bit confused at first and hit these keys. I will get use to it over time but the keys were not really necessary or could have been placed somewhere else (minus 1 star). I would make the purchase again and will also recommend this laptop to family and friends.

*UPDATE*

The laptop HD has failed and will need to be replaced. Its my fault but I lost picture of my baby that I can never get back. Laptop continues to get hotter each time I play a game. I got a coller pad for it but its still runs very hot! Im starting to think that I made the wrong choice. There was also an issue with the sound ports for head phones on the side and was shipped back to be repaired. Its only a few months old!

I have purchased a RAID external backup for my wife and my laptops. Well see how HPs services is.....

I've been meaning to buy a Quad-Core Phenom II mobile for some time now, and there isn't much out there. There are upcoming BE (Black Edition) mobile CPUs but those have not hit the market yet. I have a desktop Phenom II X4 940 BE and it just blows my builds away so I'd figure gotta have those mobile versions. I did a lot of research and this laptop is prolly the best at the time of this writing ;-)

I'm always monitoring the CPU/Core temperature using CoreTemp and I've noticed I've not passed 76C when doing heavy intensive stuff. The notebook cooler brought it down to 72C. On normal usage (browsing et al) it's just around 45-52C. So while the left-side kinda heats, I'm not worried about it. I had an Asus K52 (Core i3 350M) w/c went up to 86C doing heavy intensive stuff! If you get past 90C then that's the time you worry ;-)

Over-all, extremely satisfied !!! HP/AMD FTW ;-)

Don't let its size fool you, this computer is very powerful. My husband didn't do much to the system except add a laptop hard drive to it; I am sure if he adds more RAM to it, the computer would run much faster but it is already fast. We don't really need this computer to do much because it is mainly used by the kids to play chess and do ear training and some other educational software. As a parent, I got this computer mainly because it is low in EMF. Since the kids use the computer a couple hours a day, I'd like them to be exposed to as little EMF as possible. Also, it doesn't hurt that this little machine uses very little energy as compared to a regular computer.

I owned a Fit-PC2 for a few years, and recently sold it on eBay and replaced it with a Fit-PC3 Pro (diskless). These computers are fantastic tech; the build quality is amazing, and they run relatively cool and using very little power. I threw a Samsung 840 Pro SSD in the PC3, installed Windows 8 x64, plugged in three 2GB external drives and it's the best torrent box ever. The PC2 worked fine in the same capacity, but the PC3 (with four times the amount of RAM as the PC2 and more than twice the processing power) runs quite a bit more smoothly. A great purchase.

I got this computer and it is a very nice computer, it is very shiny on the cover, and around the mouse area. I didn't et this computer from Amazon so I cant say when it arrived and in what condition it was in, I got mine at Wal-Mart. but none the less it is a great computer. its windows 8 so it is different then windows 7, you may find it difficult at first to move around but after about 2 hours of just messing around I know my way around. the camera is very nice, it is very fast moving so you wont blink and 3 seconds later "you" in the computer blink. its more like .5 second delay, if not less. all in all I would definitely recommend this to anyone, this is my first laptop so you know it is a good one for beginners. I love this laptop and if you decide to get it I guarantee you will too :)

Dell Inspiron i15N-1910BK 15-Inch Laptop (Black)

There were no reviews yet when I bought this laptop except for one that I found about 18 pages in on a Google search. I wasn't sure if I should take a chance, but it was a Dell with an HDMI port and it was only $400.00. I ordered it on a Saturday and got it just after 8:00 a.m. Monday morning. I love it so far. It's really fast compared to my 64 MB of ram on my Desktop. There was no software fluff that I needed to remove. Some people complained in reviews of other laptops about unwanted programs loaded in it, and then they had to uninstall all of it. One person said she deleted a little too much and had to put it back in. McAfee is loaded on the laptop, but that's the program that AT&T gives me for free so I was good with that. I've only had the laptop for 2 days so I'll have to do a follow-up review in a few months or so. I can say initially that it appears to be a nice laptop for the money.

A follow up note: The battery life appears to be only a couple of hours. That is not a problem for me, but for some people it may be a real concern.

A hint for those who already get McAfee from AT&T, you have to hit "Activate" on the pop-up for the free McAfee trial; otherwise, the pop-up will never go away. I ended up at a McAfee community forum to find that out!

March 30, 2013: I still love this laptop. I use a mouse with it though. It has 3 USB ports, which I have used all of them at once on occasion. I have no regrets with this purchase.

Works as it should. Super fast shipping. Love my new laptop! My old Dell laptop just became too slow and it was time to replace it. I only use my laptop for downloading my digital camera pics onto it, the occasional Word documents, Skype and the internet. This laptop does all of that very well. I highly recommend this computer for the price.

Initially when I set up this laptop it would drop the wireless connection constantly. I was about to return it to amazon when I decided to contact DELL about this problem. The dell techs scanned the PC and found that the trial version of Mc Afee was the culprit. After deleting the program my laptop began to operate smoothly and fast. The tech also mentioned a security program called "system mechanic" this program constantly scans and repairs any glitches that your computer may incounter. This program cost $129.00 for a three year subscription however I can download it to any computer I own, this is where the sysyem mechanic becomes a bargain as I have 3 computers in my household, and now all of them are covered by this program. So far so good, I will update this review after I have had it for awhile longer.

The one thing I would have liked to see would have been an illuminated keyboard, however for the cost of this laptop I feel it was a good buy, and much faster than my dell that has the Vista operating system. Vista has too many issues than I can mention in this review.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14" Core i5 500GB Notebook

Great little laptop that does most things well. It's not going to be a good gaming laptop due to the relatively underpowered integrated Intel 3D graphics, somewhat slow HDD, and small screen, but for general web surfing, streaming video playback, "light" gaming (i.e. Flash games), non-intensive photo editing (Photoshop Elements), and drawing in Inkscape (if you can stand the small screen), it's more than adequate.

I purchased my unit at 0ffi¢e Depot during the Black Friday sale week. In the course of my research, I found this identical unit was available direct from Lenovo's website during the summer for a price under 450 with various coupons.

And just really quick, my list of negatives with this unit (which may not be negatives to you, depending...) and rational behind my 4-star rating:

no option for a lighted keyboard or keyboard downlight

no option for higher resolution screen

no numeric keypad, not even in the traditional laptop sense of pressing Fn+NumLock to switch the right side of the alpha-keyboard into numeric mode (this is a feature I used occasionally).

no option for a BluRay drive

no USB 3.0 -not that I have a need for this yet, but it's a standard feature on many competing laptops

I liked this laptop so much, I purchased two E420 units (identical 1141-A24 models) and gave one to my dad, who has been using a well-worn IBM T-43 ThinkPad I handed down to him. I had a chance to compare the old school workhorse side-by-side with the E420 and made the following general observations:

The anti-reflective qualities of the matte-finish screens is comparable, but the E420 is brighter by a wide margin

The T43 had an "old school" 4:3 aspect ratio, vs. the wide screen 16:9 of the E420. This results in a narrower but taller screen for the older computer, but with a denser resolution (1400x1050) and more "room" vertically on the desktop. For most web surfing, photo editing and drawing, this older 4:3 is still the preferable aspect ratio.

The E420 is about ¾" wider than the T43, despite the T43 having a "bigger" 14.1-inch screen (this, again due to the aspect ratio)

Whereas the T43 had a parallel port, modem, PCMCIA slot and a PS2 Mouse Port, the E420 boasts an SD card reader, Bluetooth 3.0, 4 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, eSATA, and a 34mm ExpressCard port. Similar features include fingerprint reader, TouchPoint controller, VGA-out, DVD-RW, and an Ethernet port.

Build quality still leans in favor of the old T43, but the E420 is no slouch. The T43 was nearly around ¾ pound heavier, but the body was slightly thinner and the screen more rigid. The E420 body feels "hollow" because it's just not as densely packed, and probably doesn't have the substantial metal subframe of the T43. However, the E420 is far and away stiffer and more rigid than my 2-year old Lenovo value-line G530, which has a flexy screen and feels "squishy" (like the bottom is pressing in) when I grip it.

The E420 has a larger touchpad and a keyboard that's closer to a real PC keyboard, not the "chiclet" style keys with minimal movement that the T43 features.

The E420's Boot time is 35 seconds to the logon screen, and with a quick finger swipe over the fingerprint reader (this one works quickly and reliably!), it's fully booted and ready to use in under a minute. The Windows Experience Index registers at 5.7, singling out the hard disc as the bottleneck in the system speed, followed by the RAM read/write speeds. So a fast SSD would only marginally improve the overall WEI score, and couldn't make too much of an improvement to the boot times.

The screen bright screen is great in the window-lit room I primarily use, and viewing angles are very good side-to-side. There is a sweet spot in the tilt that inverts quickly if not adjusted just so. Yet I find it acceptable for close-in viewing. Sound quality is decent, though not audiophile quality -nothing worse than your average clock radio.

Lenovo has placed most of the system functions (screen brightness, volume, web cam on/off, etc.) to the top-row function keys, then went one step further: they made the function key require a two-key press to activate (for example, instead of hitting F5 to refresh or F11 for full screen, I now have to press Fn-F5 or Fn-F11), but the auxiliary commands are now single-key press (press JUST F5 for the web cam). It's a little something to get used to, and it's a situation where a keyboard backlight would have been appreciated in darker settings to help me find my way.

All ports to the sides of the body, with the exception of the RJ45 jack. Thank goodness, no audio ports sticking out of the front edge. If you opt for the optional 9-cell battery, it would protrude out the rear by about an inch. And no more confusing the headphone port for the mic port: this computer uses a single integrated "smart" port, though I suppose it requires a new single plug (or USB) headset for my Skype calls.

I am using this laptop successfully with HP's Wi-Fi Mobile Mouse, which requires Windows 7 + an up-to-date network chipset, and doesn't require any port-sucking USB dongles.

The computer comes a little bit bloated with Lenovo's software, most of which is good, some of which is unnecessary. Fortunately, my biggest headache, Norton Anti-Virus, was easily removable via ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. The others you'll have to pick through depending on what Lenovo features you'll find valuable. Lenovo even saw fit to ship this unit with Google Chrome installed, which manages to make an appearance before Microsoft's Internet Explorer has a chance to pop up. However, in my case, it was Chrome v12 (current version is 15), and it wouldn't automatically upgrade itself. I had to uninstall Chrome and download a clean version of the current software.

A rundown of the included Lenovo software, most of which is optional to keep installed and/or use:

A quick boot utility that speeds boot times

An auto-lock feature that, if no inputs are sensed after a user-determined amount of time, turns on the web cam and looks for a face. If none is detected, it password locks the laptop.

An orientation sensing utility that allows the user to turn the unit sideways to read PDFs and other documents, automatically rotating those docs to fit the portrait view.

A recovery utility to burn a recovery disc from the hard drive's recovery partition.

The fingerprint reader software, which on this unit works reliably, usually on the first swipe, and is quick.

Last thing worth mentioning: if you want a number pad and can stand an extra ~1½ in width, a version of the 15.5-inch E520 model has exactly the same spec (actually, with a faster 2430M processor) for almost exactly the same price. You'll get the num pad, but you'll still be stuck with the stock 1366x768 resolution, with no 1600x900 option available on Lenovo's website).

For a computer I use daily for web surfing, video watching, some light Inkscape drawing, Photoshop Elements editing, and lightweight gaming, the E420 fits the bill in terms of price, value/quality, and speed/functionality. It's by no means cutting edge, it certainly isn't the best looking nor the smallest/lightest of the bunch, but it's designed to be carried around and used in any number of tasks with a minimum of headache. Five to six hour battery life is to be expected (unless under heavy video playback), and 9 hours are achievable with an upgrade to the extended 9-cell battery.

Compared to my 3 year old Acer 5515 this is a rocketship.

As configured the WEI is 5.9, the HDD and memory are the bottlenecks.

Keyboard is amazing, the touchpad is also great. The trackpoint, thaat is new to me and I am still working on it.

Startup from fully off to any webpage is less than 1 minute.

From sleep it is just seconds.

The ThinkVantage Utilities are nice, makes updating very easy.

I will be increasing the memory to max, and am considering a SSD for future installation.

I dont replace computers that often, every 2 to 3 years, I fully expect this to last that long.

I would, and have, reccomend this to anyone.

Was able to find this particular configuration at a brick and mortar store with a much cheaper price than offered here. The laptop has a clean look. It's not the keyboard I know and love from my work T400, but the nubbin is right where it should be and I love it! Good battery, good WiFi, quiet fan, and great start-up time. Good little machine that easily out performs my wife's bigger and supposedly better spec'd HP from last year.

If you can find the Core i5 model, go for it.

Just as the title says my motherboard died after about 4 months of owning this laptop. Lenovo had me ship the laptop out for repair, and took 4 weeks to finally ship it back. They refused to be flexible with delivery and tried to ship it while I was on vacation. Instead of leaving it for a family member to pick up later, Lenovo refused to change the shipping options and had it shipped back to themselves. After contacting Lenovo support again I won't expect to be able to try this whole shipping disaster again for another 2 weeks. From new to completely dead in 4 months is simply not OK. Six weeks turn-around time on a completely dead laptop is simply not OK. Since IBM stopped manufacturing Lenovo, quality has gone severely downhill.

Update June 2012: The computer died for a THIRD time... same problem... even though it had been used twice since arriving from being repaired. Lenovo kept claiming it only had been repaired once (and sometimes never) and that a replacement wasn't an option. They also kept claiming that my year-long warranty expired (after only eight months... several weeks of which they had the laptop in their facilities) and made me pay for an extended warranty to receive any service even though I provided a receipt and registered it when I bought it. After weeks of waiting and submitting proof that I had the computer repaired before for the same problem, they relented in sending a new computer... though it took so long they sent a different model.

Update March 2012: The computer did suddenly die again exactly as it did before in early January. After going through weeks of trouble trying to get it fixed, it was finally fixed again. I had to escalate the problem to get it repaired however. It wasn't easy. I've actually had to replace the computer since this one is gone more than with me and I need to get work done.

Update November 2011: Lenovo did finally fix and ship the laptop back to me three weeks earlier than the 'earliest' possible date, but it was still gone for weeks. In order to push the repair through to this earlier time I had to call nearly daily (waiting on hold for an average of 30 minutes each time) as well as send numerous e-mails. They didn't automatically do anything to speed up the process and I'm not sure if the computer will suddenly die again at any minute, so I still recommend looking at a Toshiba instead.

Update October 2011: The motherboard suddenly and completely died while safely resting in its bag (to the point I can't recover data without taking the machine apart and collecting the hard drive, which voids the warranty). Lenovo has been quick to get a repair box out, but after quoting two days and promising six, they now won't tell me when I will see it back. I've demoted the rating because a dead motherboard after less than two months is really sad, especially because I've been ultra-careful with it and it happened while it was turned off and unplugged between uses. Having a repair on a new laptop take several weeks longer than I've owned it is unacceptable.

This is a great sturdy and agile laptop for the price. It includes features not easily found such as a non-glossy screen and fingerprint reader. The hard drive while smaller than others in the same price range is much faster, which is more important when you are multitasking. It is not extremely heavy and the screen is big enough to get things done while remaining portable. A big glossy screen may be great for watching movies, but this laptop wins if you are just trying to get work done.

I have been using this computer to run word processors, engineering applications, and browse the web all at the same time without trouble. I have also installed a Linux partition and it runs dual boot easily.

The computer does have extra features for when you are not working. The fingerprint reader works great and is very convenient. The webcam and mic work well and I thought the speakers were louder and clearer than other laptops I looked at in the same price range.

Reading other reviews I wondered about the wifi. I've found the wifi works great for me in all kinds of places (home, school, restaurants... secure and open) and I've had no issues all at in Windows. If you load Linux, you need to make sure to turn on the wifi and get the settings correct.

That being said, there are minor issues (that I didn't feel were big enough to rate lower based on my usage). One is that the huge touchpad is great and aligned well, but it interferes with the keyboard and you must change your settings to turn it off while you type. Another is that there are no hard drive lights it would have been nice if the read dot of "Think Pad" on the keyboard did this rather than just stay on. The battery didn't hold a charge well at first, but a few full discharges and recharges fixed that. The DVD-combo drive is extremely loud and I definitely wouldn't be able to enjoy playing a video with it because it would be impossible to hear. However for the few times I use these drives, it isn't a huge deal. The power cord to the transformer comes out easily unless you plug it in REALLY tight. Lastly, the function key is placed where I expect to find the left "Ctrl" key, which is annoying when I'm trying to use shortcuts to copy and paste. I'm probably going to change the keyboard layout (in the operating systems) soon in order to deal with this.

Wifi needs to be tweaked in Linux (works great in Windows out-of-the-box)

Touchpad settings much be adjusted to avoid problems when you type

Battery must be cycled when new to hold a charge well

You need to plug the cord into the transformer REALLY well for them to stay connected

Overall, I recommend this laptop for anyone looking for a computer mostly for serious work. If you will be playing videos (especially from a DVD), then this probably isn't what you are looking for.

I have been pleased with this laptop. It stays relatively cool when in use and lasts quite a while on the battery supplied (I get about 4+ hours when word processing and browsing the web). I have a slightly different model. I have an E420 1141-A51. This machine is not for gaming. I have had problems with the video card drivers. Games and some video processes have caused the system to freeze or blue screen. After resolving these issues, I steer clear of these kinds of applications.

As it was my first time to buy a laptop via internet, I was little nervous. But there was no problem at all. This new laptop is working very well and I am so satisfied.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5353 Laptop 15.6" / 4GB / 500GB

I purchased this laptop from Amazon through the distributor "detailsurfer" as a present for my husband. The purchase was made through Amazon and the hard drive stopped working after less than 2 weeks of use. A technican for Toshiba and Norton both said the hard drive was defective. The Tobshiba rep gave a claim reference number and stated that the distributor whom I purchased the laptop must be notified concerning replacement. I contacted the distributor Andrew within the return period. He did not accept return of the computer. Toshiba has a one year warranty on the laptop. My husband contacted Toshiba concerning this laptop and they stated that they would send a box so the computer could be returned. We have not received the packaging 2 months after the purchase.

I would recommend that you NOT purchase anything from Andrew at "detailsurfer". He has provided no customer service for this laptop. The computer stopped working during the reurn period. He took my money and when the laptop was defective he did not take his "junk" back and send a new computer.

I have purchased a Toshiba laptop in the past and had no problems. I would be reluctant to purchase their products in the future because you will not get any customer service from their distributor or the company.

This Toshiba is one of 3 laptops I've been waiting for a sale on, and I've just

picked it up at OfficeMax for $379.99. It's probably not the fastest if you're looking for a gaming computer, but for my varied uses, it is perfect. I was looking for a fast processor without mortgaging the house, a HDMI port, DVD player/writer, WiFi of course, great memory and hard drive storage included without having to upgrade immediately (or ever), full sized keyboard with separate numeric pad, and a brand I can trust. This laptop is all that and more. Dual core processor running at 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM, and 500GB hard drive. Great price, great computer.

Won't know about battery life this soon after purchase. Also some bloat to remove, and don't forget to update your drivers.

I order a 14" Ibook, and i am stunned! This Ibook may be considered out dated...BUT is really great for every day use! Sure you may need to set up for your first Internet's use... but when every thing is all done and put in it is well worth it! Besides the fact that the iBook did not come with the Classic Environment installed as advertised, it has run flawlessly for three months.

I love the keyboard, it works perfectly with a two button mouse and scrollbutton, and it does a bootable backup to a Firewire external drive using Silverkeeper.

Tiger is a very nimble operating system and runs in 1/3 the ram as my iMac and actually surfs the web faster than my iMac.

It's a great little compact computer.

HP HDX16-1370US 16-Inch Entertainment Laptop

I'm a big fan of the HP HDX series. It sits at the top of their Pavilion line and is one of the best built notebooks sold in the retail channel. It's aimed solidly at consumers looking for a high end entertainment laptop. Because the material quality is well above average it's not necessarily the best value: you can get these specs for less money, just not with the same build quality. This is a good choice for someone looking for a notebook that can handle more than just web browsing. The biggest drawback of this HDX model is a slightly under powered battery and a little more weight (though again, much of that lies with the superior frame and shell).

Let's go over the specs:

CPU: The Core 2 P7550 runs two separate cores at 2.26GHz and has 3MB of on chip cache. The Core2 line is the best notebook CPU out there today and and this model this is about in the middle of the mobile Core2 line in terms of performance. At 35W it sits in the same thermal envelope as much slower chips (such as the Mobile Pentium line). Having two cores means you can run your full internet security suite and not have your computer freeze up for events like a virus scan.

MEMORY: 4GB of DDR2 RAM is plenty and the 1066Mhz memory speed is plenty fast.

HDD: The 500GB HDD has plenty of storage, even if you like to do video encoding. The 5400RPM speed isn't the fastest but it is more reliable that 7200RPM drives.

DISPLAY: The 16in (1366×768) display looks great. Like a lot of glossy screens it's a little more susceptible to glare, but in the home it looks fantastic. There's also a HDX line with an 18inch screen.

GRAPHICS: The Nvidia GeForce GT 130M w/ 1GB of DDR2 used in this notebook is a large step up from the standard Intel 4500 graphics. It is basically a Nvidia 9600 on a newer (55nm) manufacturing process. With this notebook you can play newer 3D games at reasonable resolutions. This is still a step down from being a true "gaming notebook" but if you want to be able to do occasional 3D gaming on it you can (I should note that online 3D games like World of Warcraft run fine on this chip). If 3D gaming is important to you I would suggest looking for a notebook with something more powerful (either the Nvidia GTS and GTX line or the ATI 4800 or 4600 series). It is more than enough to handle your home entertainment needs. The only downside is it uses more power and will drain your batter faster than the standard 4500.

AUDIO: The Altec Lansing with Dolby Home Theater and Sub-Woofer is part of what sets this notebook apart. The sound is fantastic. It is rich and deep and has none of the tininess usually associated with notebook sound.

DVD/CD DRIVE: Uses the "HP Super-Multi Drive" which means it can read and write pretty much any CD or DVD format out there except for Blu Ray. The lack of Blu Ray is the main ding on the "entertainment" specs of notebook. You can get Blu Ray on other HDX-16 models or by custom ordering it from HP.

BATTERY: The 6 cell battery falls a little short. With this size screen and the upgraded graphics chip you really want a 12 cell battery (which some HDX models have). If you expect to be plugged in most of the time you probably don't care. If you expect to travel with this the 1.5-2 hour typical performance (3 max) will disappoint you.

WEIGHT: Coming in a 7.06 lbs this is slightly heavier than the next step down from HP (a DV6 comes in around 6.5 lbs) but that's mostly improved framing and heavier grade plastics. This notebook is solid.

WIRELESS: The usually Intel 5100 A/G/N supports the most common standards ("A" and "G") along with the new "N" standard. You should have no trouble connecting to wireless networks.

PORTS: This notebook has all the usual ports (USB2, Ethernet, VGA, headphones, microphones, eSATA) and a HDMI port. Thanks to the included remote you could watch DVDs on your TV (if it supports HDMI) in relative comfort. I'm not sure why you would want to foor DVDs, but if you want to use Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Video On Demand, it makes it easy to download and watch movies on your TV.

So if you want a solid notebook with good video and sound this is well worth taking a lot at, especially if you want to download movies. If you are looking for a gaming notebook keep looking. If you want Blu Ray keep looking. If you just want to surf the web you don't need a computer this powerful unless you want really good sound. If battery life is important look for a model with a 12 cell battery (or custom order one from HP).

I originally wrote an extremely in depth review about this computer, but peculiarly enough, it never got published. Rather than spending hours going through the extreme level of detail I did before, I'll just summarize it by saying I've had two of these now (first one returned for a replacement), and both had 1) dead pixels and 2) a horrible rattling/crackling/blown speaker sound in the right speaker. Sent it to HP to fix it under warranty, they fixed the pixels and SAID they replaced the speaker, but the terrible rattling is still there. More troubling, the HP representative tested several of these computers at the repair center and said that they were ALL exhibiting the same problem in the right speaker (which is placed directly over the triple bass) so this may in fact be a MANUFACTURING problem. For anyone that has this laptop, please test and comment back.

Other than that, everything else is fine (minus the horrid amount of bloatware that comes on this thing). But I find it unacceptable for something that calls itself an ENTERTAINMENT laptop to be plagued by audio and video hardware flaws.

I was looking for a laptop that I could use as a mobile desktop. I do work everyday on my desktop and I needed a machine that could do what my desktop can do on the go. I have owned this machine for almost two weeks now and it has been great. The high-powered processor working alongside the high amounts of ram allow me to surf the web, do my work and computer programming, and listen to my internet radio all at the same time with no slow down at all. The hard drive is huge, so I was able to install all of my large-sized programs with no problem at all. The webcam is very good and produces a clear picture when I chat with my family and friends. Aside from performance, it looks great with its shiny titanium finish and the screen is big, bright, and clear.

My suggestion to anyone who is planning on buying this laptop is to get a 12-cell battery as so that you can get a little more life out of the machine. With the standard battery included with the laptop, it lasts about 1.5 2 hours. With the 12-cell, I got 3 3.5.

One last note... all of the computers that I have owned up until now were running 32-bit versions of windows, so I was hesitant to get a 64-bit machine. However, 64-bit machines are not that different from 32-bit machines. You won't even be able to tell the difference. (Just make sure that when you install software, you pick the 64-bit version if necessary. Some installers will differentiate for you, but just be on the lookout.

Overall, this is a great machine and i would suggest it to others.

I Made a very bad choice of buying this laptop for my business. A few days of use and in the middle of a presentation to my potential clients, the "adjust sound stop play forward" Controls started coming up automatically on my screen along with an annoying clicking sound. No Software update from HP and Microsoft would fix it. Finally, I found out from some online forums that its due to an oversensitive MEDIASMART touch panel that picks up static charges and interpreting it as human touch. A Kid suggested that I put some scotch MAGIC tape on the MEDIASMART bar and that fixed it. It even works with the tape on it.!! Next, It has a Glare friendly screen , which no matter what angle you are watching at, makes it tough to work in a room illuminated with natural daylight. You need to be in a very dimly lit room to use this screen, and then you realize that its hard to read the keys on the keyboard. Avoid this Amateur laptop for business use. Maybe a its good buy for your elementary school kid to watch ELMO or Mickey mouse movies and perhaps to write on the screen with Crayons!!

I've had the HDX 16 for several years now and the problems I encounter keep adding up.

The first problems I encountered with the laptop were problems with the touch buttons below the screen. The touch buttons enable the user to change the volume or play/rewind/stop media and other useful things. The volume button and treble/bass buttons have a fancy bar that looks like it should indicate the current volume level but don't. The buttons are also a bit slow and unresponsive and may cause frustration with needing to hit the button twice or toggling something on and off accidentally.

The second problem I encountered was with HP software. There is a lot of HP software, but the only piece of software I liked, the webcam software disappeared. I don't know how or when but one day I went to click my desktop shortcut to the webcam software and it was gone.

The third and fourth problems introduced themselves to me as I began installing and playing games on the HDX. The third problem is that the graphics card sucks. I had problems tabbing between a full screen game back to the desktop. Additionally the graphics card fails A LOT. Even playing simple internet flash games can cause the graphics card to crash and force me to stare at a blank screen for a minute as it recovers, not to mention actual computer games. Everyday I visit NVIDIAs site checking for new updates hoping the problem will be solved, and it still hasn't.

The fourth problem is the laptop cooling system. Even the first day I used my laptop I noticed a build up of heat on the left side of the laptop. Just doing simple tasks such as typing on Microsoft word or writing a negative review on Amazon I feel an abnormal amount of heat. Now this wouldn't be a big problem if I didn't play computer games. Unfortunately this is an "entertainment laptop" and I am a teenage boy and computer games are my pride and joy. I started to play Napoleon Total War and after about 10-30 minutes BAM computer shuts off. I felt my laptop and it was scalding hot. I know you might be thinking I mistook the word laptop as a computer I can sit on my lap. However, I have a cooling pad for my laptop and it STILL overheats when I play graphic intensive video games. The only compromise I have been able to find besides tying my laptop to the ceiling and letting in dangle in mid air is to let about half the laptop hang over the edge of a desk. This is the ONLY way I have been able to prevent my HDX from overheating when I play games.

Overall I know this review has been a bit negative but it is these 4 things that of slowly driven me insane while having this laptop. I mean it really drives me insane not to be able to play my laptop anywhere without hanging it off the side of a desk. I am thinking about calling HP and asking what I can do, and maybe bringing my laptop into a techie shop and getting an upgraded fan. Bottom line is this is my experience with my laptop. I don't know if all other laptops experience this problem but if they don't I recommend you forget about the HDX and go with a laptop that doesn't have a fail graphics card and overheats on a flat surface.

HP Pavilion DM3-1035DX Notebook PC - AMD Athlon Neo X2 Dual-Core L335 / 13.3" LED / 3GB DDR2 / 320G

I have this notebook for about 2 months now. Although I only use HP DM-3 for mobile surfing, I have been able to perform heavy jobs from time to time.

This notebook weigh only 4.25lb and it is pretty light to carry around. I put it in my swiss gear bag and I barley notice the weigh. It doesn't have any CDROMS drive but it doesn't bother me a bit because I only needed only once during these two months and I think I can live with it because it is so light without CD-Drive.

The pros of the this Notebook is that

1. Light (as I mention only 4.2 lb)

2. Window 7 (better than linux and window vista)

3. 3 GB of memory in window 64 bit (window uses about 1GB), It is easily accessible in the back for upgrade. (although I never tried it before)

4. Wireless draft N, faster if you could get draft N signal.

5. Storage 340 with HP protect smart, you could get bigger space for this much money but not at this weigh.

6.Built webcam and mic is descent enough to hold video conference.

7. Keyboard and the metal cover is such a charm, many people think I paid a lot more than what I really pay for this.

8.4 USB, typical,one mic port and audio out. Nothing fancy but I am really sold for the one HDMI port. I can instantly hook up with my sharp 46" through HDMI cable and browse the web or watch online movie (I watch more movies and browsing the web).

Now the cons

1. Battery life is no where they claim it to be, they said nearly 6 hours in HP sites, I barely get past 4 with minimum power usage.

2.Track pad is difficult to operate.

3. Over heat quickly when watching movies or doing heavy tasks, otherwise, it is fine.

4. Hibernation does not resume window quickly.

As you can see, there are more pros than cons and I am one of those people who hate Netbook because it is too damn small. This worth the extra money.

This is the perfect size for school, as my classrooms all have small desks. I bought it for the HDMI port, and installed webcam. It is pretty fast until a lot of stuff is on it requiring a file purge every now and again. You WILL need a fan as it gets hot, and battery life isn't near what it should be. Had mine a year and the external edges show cracks and wear. I am deathly afraid of the pin in the electrical out breaking as they put the straight out plug in it. I do plan on upgrading the RAM because 3g isn't enough to run Adobe Suite.

Dell D620 Laptop Duo Core with Windows XP

The Dell Latitude line of notebooks are well built business machines. The Latitudes and XPS lines are a tier higher than the entry-level Inspiron Series.

The case is constructed of metal with plastic trim along the LCD monitor. There are 4 USB ports which allow for a variety of peripherals to be attached such as portable hard drives. There is a headphone and microphone jack and an outlet for a monitor. The keyboard is comfortable to the touch. In addition to the mousepad, there is a pointing stick with 2 buttons below the space key, allowing for either to control the cursor. The 'spill proof' keyboard is one of the biggest assets (I have only spilled a drink on it once, where I just wiped off the keyboard without a problem in function).

The WIFI capabilities is reliable and easy to set up. The hard drive is quiet, as is the optical drive. The strike zone hard drive is resistant to light drops.

Performance of the notebook is excellent with the Dual Core processors. This notebook easily handles virus scanning, working on a MS Office document, internet browser and listening to music without any problem. The integrated graphics allows for basic games like Tiger Woods Golf, Mafia, NHL Hockey, the Godfather, for example.

Battery life is very good for the 6 cell (about 4 hours).

One of the greatest attractions that I have for this line of notebooks is the lack of 'bloatware' unnecessary programs that are installed into your computer (trial programs, multiple internet service providers, advertisements, etc).

Overall, with a spill resistant keyboard and drop zone hard drive, this notebook will take the daily knocks of the regular commuter. This is no Panasonic Toughbook but it will survive your daily use.

VERDICT

Highly recommend this notebook.

I purchased the D620 for my daughter in college when her 2 yr old HP notebook died due to an overheating problem (long story). After verifying that the D620 worked properly by connecting to the internet and installing XP SP 3, I moved over one of the RAM chips (for a total of 1.5 GB) and the harddrive from the HP. I then installed Windows 7 and recovered her data files (I didn't really expect a college student to use the flash drives that I gave her for backups). Finally, I installed software including Office 7. Throughout the process the D620 performed flawlessly. I tested it by running DVDs, Office apps and videos over the internet (after I set up a wireless connection). This is one fine notebook, very fast and with a good display. Its only "short comings" are obvious from the specs, i.e., no web cam, no media slots and no DVD burner. But these are clearly minor issues given the price.

I was hesitant to purchase a computer "on-line" but now I am glad that I did. The computer was exactly what I wanted (Amazon gives you more information up front on what you are purchasing than any other place that I had tried), and I received it within two days. I have not had one problem or complaint. Well done.

I used the same laptop at work for the about the last 3 years, and it is a work horse. I can buy a brand new commercial laptop for couple hundred bucks more, but I wanted the reliability of the professional business laptop. I have to say this used business machine Laptop works well except for 3 problems: First, the battery only lasts 5 minutes, second, the DVD burner drive work sporadically (DVD door doesn't eject consistently, and it doesn't always detect the DVD or CD in it). Handed the laptop to my 11 year old daughter few weeks after purchase (Christmas gift), so I did not find out about these problems until 2 month after purchase. Contacted the seller, but the warrantee had expired after 30 days of purchase, so I have to buy a battery and drive on my own. Third thing, the XP pro operating system was loaded on the computer, but the recovery disks were not included; I hope the hard the hard drive doesn't crash sometime soon.

To read one of the other reviews one would think the reviewer is talking about a completely different machine. My family has two of these and we have experienced none of the problems that the other reviewer has mentioned. XP is a very stable platform and we'll see if Windows Seven will live up to the hype. As far as poor sound I wonder compared to what? I've had several different laptops and netbooks and they sound tinny compared to the D620. Besides, I hook the machine up to external powered speakers to listen to my music library.

Let's face it. If Dell built poor quality equipment they wouldn't be in business as long as they have been.

MSI G Series GT60 2OD-026US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I have had my GT60-2OD for about a week now. And it's been awesome. The keyboard is a pleasure to type on, the backlight and effects are very nice as well, and also as I read somewhere they did add a matte screen bezel for this generation so no distracting reflections while using your new laptop!

I have it set on a coolermaster pad made for 17" laptops, given that the screen bezel is pretty wide. Also, the laptop fits nicely inside the pad when transporting it or for storage. The cooling pad is mostly for elevation, but it does help ease the airflow around the system. Without it the temps are a little higher due to the fan intake/exhaust vents recycling some of the hot air that bounces of the wooden table which is very insulating and gets quite hot. Perhaps glass or metal tables are easier on the temps. I haven't been using the cooling pad fans, as I don't really think they would make much of a difference as the laptop is ventilated by the sides and not bottom, but I'm sure they could improve the temps by a few degrees.

I did have some modifications done to the laptop. The thermal paste replaced with IC Diamond 24 by Gentech PC and I also had 3 mSSDs installed and set to RAID 0 to get a bigger SSD C: Drive. Also, as a bonus I got my RAM upgraded to 24 gigs.

With the turbo fan on (from the touch bar controls) and ambient temps around 24 C neither the CPU nor the GPU ever go much above 80 C with heavy gaming for hours at ultra settings on the ARMA 3 Alpha which runs at around 45 FPS with default ULTRA settings. A little reduction on draw distances and reduction of MSAA to 4x instead of 8x brought it up to 50 FPS. This with no overclocking or any kind of fiddling or any other settings changed. I'm sure that both the CPU and GPU are capable of a little more, but I haven't been there yet. The only that I did was to use the new feature MSI put in place, which uses some of the battery power to complement the supply when the 180W from the AC adapter aren't enough. It's called hybrid power and to use it you just need to open the program and press OK.

But if you keep your factory thermal paste job, you might get higher temps than I did and maybe slightly slower FPS because of the system protecting itself from overheating. Some users on forums reported that some of the paste jobs were sloppy and that MSI used too much pasted and that some systems were overheating. So you may want to look into that, specially if you think your system is running too hot.

Switching between GPU's is quite easy, to force Windows to use the Intel integrated GPU isntead of the 780m all the time you have to go to Nvidia Control panel/3d Settings/ and change your global settings to the integrated GPU and then restart the PC. This way your GPU light will remain white. Then, manually choose games and other programs that you want using the Nvidia GPU from that same menu. Light code: White=Intel HD4600 Orange=NVIDIA 780m

I haven't done thorough battery tests, but as with any laptop I'm sure it greatly depends on the use. Maybe a little over an hour of gaming and perhaps 10 hours with devices turned off, minimum brightness and just light browsing and some video watching using the integrated GPU only. These numbers are invented and not any real representation. I will try to get some accurate numbers after I do some testing.

There are some annoying quirks. Whenever I plug my G700 mouse (haven't tried any other mice) the computer auto disables the touchpad. And I have to go FN+F3 to enable again. The touchpad is really nice when typing and you need to do something with the cursor quickly, not so much if it's disabled. Apparently some of the Synaptics software does this and is somewhat complicated to fix as there is no toggle setting available natively. Maybe new drivers will have that feature, but with the ones you get out of the box your touchpad will be automatically disabled when another mouse input is connected. After searching on some forums someone pointed out to me this fix

"Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached" option in the synaptics control panel, open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh, right click and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it "DisableIntPDFeature". "Modify it's value to 33 in hexadecimal, or 51 in decimal to enable it to be default on." I haven't tried it yet myself. But I might try to do it soon.

I was unlucky enough to get a noisy fan when it is idling, it sound like toy car gears or perhaps a bad bearing. But a quick e-mail to my reseller and a few arrangements with MSI got me a new one coming in the mail. Which I will change myself. Since my warranty sticker had already been broken it's not an issue. Yet, you should contact MSI and ask about implications of breaking your warranty sticker. The consensus is that as long as you don't actually damage anything there shouldn't be a problem, yet I recommend contacting MSI yourself. You need to break it to upgrade your RAM with the 2 slots that are available upon opening the laptop (the other 2 are under the keyboard)

I have been thinking about doing two things to improve the aesthetics of the notebook. And that is

1)Removing the stickers, or at least just the Specs and MSI gaming series and maybe even the Sound Blaster one. The Intel and Nvidia one are fine. Since the handrest is made of aluminum, I would think that any glue residue would be easily removed with alcohol, lighter fluid or some other light solvent. This may decrease the resale value of the laptop later on, so it's a very personal call.

2)Coming from the MSI GX60, I always hated the shiny screen bezel, yet I loved the chrome MSI logo. In the GT60 I love the matte bezel but the painted MSI logo on the bezel looks very cheap and detracts from the High-end look of the notebook. I ordered a pair or metal stickers from China that I found on eaby. They will get here in about 20 days, so we'll see about that. I know that I might have to modify things a little bit. The foremost reason I think MSI chose to do this is since the bezel is matte, the stickers wouldn't play so nice with that surface. Let's see what happens. I got a 2 pack, so I have a little slack there.

As a footnote, I have been looking for good cases to keep and carry the laptop around. I haven't yet found a neoprene skin that would fit the laptop, it is bigger than a standard 15.6 incher and also thicker, but not as big as a 17 incher. I haven't yet found one but I'll keep looking. As for the case, after a lot of research I found a nice case that I think looks amazing, has a good price and offers good protection. The Condor 3-Way laptop case available here on Amazon seems to fit this laptop nicely. It seems to have a large enough pocket for the Power supply brick and has good padding and restraint all the way around. I'll post an update once I get it to see how well it fits.

To wrap it up, I read on the owners forum for this laptop over at notebookreview that to get the warranty from MSI you have to complete the online form and then print and mail something back to them (through snail mail) to get the full warranty. I haven't done it yet and I suggest you look up some information. I will try to keep this review updated with any new developments.

Sadly I bought this from a popular website starting with an N and ending in G which I will never use again. I purchased there only because Amazon themselves don't have this in stock yet. BIG MISTAKE as getting an RMA has been a nightmare.

The laptop has great hardware for gaming, great sound, a good screen, fantastic keyboard. Scored 7700 on 3Dmark 11 P out of the box.

Mine has a bad issue with the fan, it sounds like a locust is stuck inside my comp. The thing rattles at idle and whines at load, like a bad bearing or similar to coil whine. The disc drive also only works sometimes. My ssd drive changes its free space available after every restart despite setting a fixed mem allocation. It will go from anywhere between 68gb and 76gb. HEAT is bad, the CPU idles at about 65C and load up to 100C unless I turn on turbo fan. The GPU goes up to 91C at load.

If I could get a refund I would but I'm stuck as they won't give one to me without paying 15% restocking. It was like pulling teeth to get a return label and my replacement isn't even guaranteed. If you buy this get it here. I hope Someday Amazon will put these places with terrible customer arrive out of business.
