Lenovo ThinkPad T410 2516DCU 14.1-Inch Laptop
I have been using Lenovo Thinkpads for the past 14 years and have always been super happy. This is also a good machine but has one major drawback "improved" bumpy touchpad....It is rather horrible I don't know what they've been thinking.... I purchased my Thinkpad online, so didn't have a chance to test it in advance and now a few months into it I am super disappointed. I am an active user of touchpad (I travel a lot and don't like to carry a mouse around with me) and I actually have a very sore index finger most of the time.... The touchpad is extremely uncomfortable to use on the finger and the previous ones felt so good, smooth and silky....
I am also considering using a very delicate version of sandpaper to get rid of the little bumps (as they do seem to wear off eventually) but I am worried about damaging the thing for good.... My fingers are now constantly sore. And I would like to quote another online user here: "This is the worst computer interface experience. It is like grating your finger over 80 grit sandpaper. What a shame. It is a dealbreaker. Miserable! Do not purchase this machine without a test drive."
Note to Lenovo: Guys, you really need to fix this!

After poking around a store and peeking in the returns cage, I found my HP Envy 4 at a heavily discounted price due to a missing battery? Really? The battery is built in. I had been shopping for literally months for an affordable Ultrabook with a touchscreen, backlit keys, small footprint, an I5 CPU, and for under a grand. The closest one I could find was an Acer M5, but that one has all the USB connections in the back (yes, under the monitor hinge), and the power button is on the front edge?!? Silly design.The HP Envy Touch 4 is nearly perfect for me, especially after the minor tweaks I have made, and plan on making. It would be perfect if it had an IPS screen. Like most TFT screens, you have to angle it right to get the most contrast. However, the screen looks better out of the box than the Acer M5. 4GB of ram is a little light for my Photoshop needs, but I can add more ram with the removal of the bottom casing. The first and easiest tweak involved a little angelic program called Classic Shell, which not only boots straight to the Windows 8 Desktop, but also adds a Windows 7 style Start Button! I have NO use for the Start Screen or Screen Formerly Known as Metro. I didn't when I beta-tested it, and I still don't. Metro is a shameless marketing ploy to get on the app bandwagon. Silly Microsoft! Apps are for kids!! With Classic Shell, you get all the familiarity of Windows 7, with all the speed of Windows 8.
The backlit keyboard is hard to find among the plethora of laptops out there, and this keyboard is perfect for me. I had considered an Asus Q500 laptop once, but the grey backlit keys were a turn-off. My last laptop was a 17-inch with a 10-key number pad, and I never used it as much as I thought I would. This keyboard is just the write size for the writing I do.
The sound is nice through the headphones, and okay without. How much sound can you expect from a 14-inch laptop anyway, Beats Audio non-withstanding?
The battery life is adequate. I haven't timed it, but I've easily used it for over 3 hours with still plenty left. It is a 4-cell Lithium Ion Polymer battery, much better than Lithium-ion alone.
I really don't use the touchscreen that much since I installed Classic Shell.
Boot-up is under 15 seconds!!
Pros: I5 CPU, super fast PC3-12800 ram, touchscreen, 2 USB 3.0 on the left, 1 USB 2.0 on the right, and SD card reader. Small, thin form factor.
Cons: Nearly 5 lbs, Windows 8, no access doors, no IPS or hi-def screen. Hey, it costs under $800 everywhere, less for an Open-Box deal!

I got this laptop for my birthday and I have to say I am very satisfied with my purchase. With 640GB of HDD and Intel Core i3 processor this model wont slow down on you. This model has a nice glossy black finish with little grey squares to style it off, the touch pad is also very good, you won't get lost where your finger is thanks to the texture style. Keyboard is also very comfortable to type, with raised keys and nice space between, I have no trouble typing in the dark. This model also comes loaded with Blu-ray ROM Drive, even though its not full HD still I can tell the difference between standard DVD quality compared to the Blu-ray. (inserted TRON: Legacy DVD and Blu-ray). The added VAIO Gate is also very neat, I can add all my icons to VAIO Gate and don't have to deal with crowded desktop to look at. There are just too many things you can do with this notebook that it will take me all night to write, (connect with PS3, wireless Display one button to launch WEB, Media, and assist).I will recommend this notebook to any students looking to work on video editing and add music, video, photos to your media with plenty of space left. Oh and watch Blu-ray on the go.

I got this laptop about 8 hours ago, and I love it. Let me break it down.Pros:

Everything is pretty much self explanatory here.
I played Tera on it for about 3 hours, and it didn't even start to get as hot as my other laptop, which turns into a lava pit at the mere mention of "Netflix." Didn't even have to use the cooling boost option, which is fantastic by the way.
Overall, I'm happy. I'll update if anything goes wrong, but I doubt it will.
Edit: It is now Day 2. I noticed that the charger gets incredibly hot when used for a few hours. My old laptop didn't do that, though my old laptop didn't game, either. Not sure how bad this is, but its something to keep in mind. Also, the cooling boost option is fantastic. The laptop would probably die without it.

overall I am disappointed in this machine. I bought it to help develop a travelogue blog while overseas, assuming that the large memory and multimedia functionality typical of a mac would suit. Additionally the price was great. What I found was that the machine was not loaded with pages/keynote et. al. That wasn't such a big deal as the primary purpose was to use the multimedia functions of the blog. I could not update anything on the machine, nothing., nada, zilch. I was not able to download Skype. Then the powercord shorted out in the middle of the trip leaving the machine useless to me. Unlike the US, not everywhere in the world is mindlessly attracted to the newest and latest Apple product, so replacing the cord was not possible. Overall, disappointed.

This is my 3rd. HP Laptop & has done well. Transfer of data from the old to the new was very easy with a transfer cable, with no professional help. This HP is slightly faster than my last Pavillion. (Open laptops do not bounce off floor well.) I currently have 5 Firefox tabs open including a weather radar and it is keeping just fine. My only problem is killing the touch pad, which makes typing a document an adventure. I am very satisfied with this laptop. Delivery was very fast and it came well protected. If you like HP laptops you will like this.
1) The CPU is capable of handling dual-channel RAM, but it only comes with one RAM module. Add a 2nd module to get a nice memory bandwidth boost -this should make the CPU and the graphics just a little bit faster. Note that mine came with a low-voltage 4G module, so I had to hunt for another low-voltage one to put in there (I added a Samsung).
2) The optical drive does not handle marginal-quality discs as well as other drives do. How often do you use an optical drive, though?

I've been a long-time Thinkpad fan--including 600E (late 1990s), R40 (early 2000s), T42 (mid 2000s), T420 (late 2000s)--for the rock-solid dependability, non-nonsense styling, and in particular the king-of-them-all keyboard. I mistakely tried a Dell Latitude E6400 for a couple of years, and I truly hated it, despite its own pointer stick and solid construction. When I decided to get this X230 Tablet, the only thing I was worried about was how the new keyboard was going to feel. Well, have no fear. I am a big fan of the new keyboard. It's got deep travel, its motion is the perfect blend between smooth travel and pleasing resistance, and the contoured surface actually feels comforable. This new keyboard is a winner. Other than that, there really isn't anything that needs to be said about this machine that the prospective buyer wouldn't already know. I loaded it up to the gills with the fastest and best of everything, except a 3G cellular card--totalled over $3000 MSRP before a the Ultrabase 3 and extra power adapters. On paper, the only thing the X230T lacks is discrete graphics, but the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics that comes with the Ivy Bridge chipset is good enough for my occasional Engineering analysis and 3D modeling work--just make sure to get a least 8 GB RAM to share with the inegrated graphics. Plus, the Ultrabase 3 is able to support dual monitors via its dual VGA+DisplayPort ports. Just one final tip--get the Multitouch keyboard; you'll be ready for Windows 8 Pro when it's released.

Before having problems with the laptop I absolutely loved it. I consider myself one of the more fortunate owners of the tx1000 because my laptop lasted me 3 years to the day. I guess that's quite rare.THE PROBLEM:
The graphic chipset (Nvidia) overheated so much that the chipset came unsoldered from the motherboard which is death for a laptop since the chipset cannot be removed and replaced. The warranty had already expired, so there was nothing left to do except take a shot in the dark and try and heat the metal connectors of the chipset so they became reattached to the motherboard (there are youtube videos describing the procedure not for the faint of heart). It lasted a week, and came across the same problem. Luckily this doesn't affect the hard drive, so all the information was safe.
HP:
Classless. Okay, Nvidia gives you a faulty chipset and you install it into several different versions of your laptops I'll be more merciful than anyone and overlook that, but at least have the respect for your customers to acknowledge the problem (which HP still refuses to do), and do something to keep your customers (which they wrongly assume will stick around). I have HP stuff all over the house, but no more. Their lack of class, honesty, and a sense of justice have been enough for me to begin looking elsewhere, and to steer people away from looking at HP products as well.
I'll be selling my tx1210us for parts soon (except the hard drive), and that will bring the HP chapter to a sad close.
Sony VAIO VPC-Z112GX/S 13.1-Inch Laptop (Silver)
I am more of a Mac user usually, but I need a windows machine occasionally, and this is far and away the best piece of hardware I have ever had (in case you wonder, I also have a thinkpad X200 and macbook pros of all sizes). The hardware spec is very similar to the last generation of macbook pro (same graphics card, similar CPU), but this is a 3lb machine, vs a 6lb mbp). The SSD is blazingly fast, the machine never gets even slightly warm (despite the fact that I usually run a number of CPU hogs on it), the keyboard is amazingly comfortable (It has a similar chicklet layout to the MBP keyboard), the screen is phenomenal (by contrast, the Thinkpad screen is much too dim). I am sure there is a bit of bloatware, but I don't notice it (256GB is a lot of bits), and the default browser is Chrome. Windows 7 is the most usable Windows release yet, which may or may not be saying much.To comment on another review: I am very much a unix person, but if you want to run unix on a laptop, just get a mac, and certainly DO NOT get a sony. Sony has always made slightly incompatible hardware (I got my first Sony ultraportable in the late 1990s -same problems). That said, I have NEVER had a linux laptop which ran properly (Thinkpads, Dells, Acer, you name it). Power management is always goofy, the display drivers are always a little off, etc, etc. Run linux at home/work, and use a vnc client to connect, if linux is that important to you. Every single old unix hack I know carries a mac (that includes some of the fathers of the open source movement) -essentially every useful piece of linux software runs (sometimes better) under OSX.
Anyway, giving two stars to the Vaio because it is not a unix box is like giving two stars to your ferrari because it won't go offroad (or conversely, to your landrover because it can't keep up with a mustang GT from a light). Use the right tool for the job.
You can Google this issue with this laptop and you will see that there are many other people with this problems. I am not the only one. And the responses from Sony have been the same with first denying the problem and then blaming the customer.

This is my third "Z-series" Sony Vaio (I previously owned a VGN-SZ750N which replaced an earlier VGN-SZ680N).The VPC-Z116GX/S is awesome. Its lighter, faster and with Windows 7 64-bit Professional it just snaps along.
The smaller form-factor screen with its much higher resolution over that of the VGN-SZ series takes some getting used to.
I use this (like I used the others) for work and play (I travel a lot) and it is a perfect balance between portability (weight and size) and power for me.

A 3 pound laptop is essential to me. I can't carry the big guys especially when I'm running around airports. Since I've had amazing good luck with all my other Sony products, including a 2005 laptop which my lawyer son is still using to show judges videos in court, and my Sony All-in-Ones, one bought in 2005 and given to the same son who is using it problem-free, and my current much bigger All-in-One, I naturally turned to Sony again, after first trying Macs and Dells. This z-series is a dream. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit pro, which has the capability of XP imaging for 32 bit programs. I have 4 G of RAM, 500 SSD hard drive, 303 ghz speed, a long lasting battery on which I've worked 6-7 hours and still had capacity left on it, a very responsive keyboard, essential to a writer, the bluray R/W drive, and have had nothing but praise for it. The person who downgraded this because it isn't a Linux machine is absurd. It's a Windows machine. You want to run Linux and fiddle with your own BIOS, fine. This isn't for you. But if you want a machine that is light, swift, responsive, and does what all the big guys do, this is your machine. Also, someone said it heated up as he worked on it. I work on mine in bed for hours, and it doesn't get hot. I did, you note, pay for extras, so I paid more than the base price, but it's worth it.One word about reliability. In 2005, I bought a small Sony laptop and their first All-in-One desktop. I outgrew them, although they never gave me a bit of trouble, and passed them on to my son, who is using them both in his law practice. I also have a Sony All-in-One PCV-AHIL, which is superb, marvelous responsive keyboard, blazing fast and in 7 months have never had a thing go wrong with this either. Ditto my Sony HDTV and bluray player.

I was the first guy to buy this laptop at the Sony store in Beverly Hills-I bought it hours after it arrived. I've had it for about six weeks now. It is an excellent, very high quality and well built machine. It is visually beautiful and the user experience is the best I have ever experienced with a laptop. It is incredibly fast-in fact with sophisticated benchmark programs it runs almost as fast as my custom built desktop i5 machine. Even though it is expensive, it is worth the money. In an odd way, at $1899, it is a good buy.My only gripe is that there seems to be an issue from time to time with the video card or Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System. This system isn't working out as well as I'd hope. If it was omitted from this machine, it would be a solid 5 star review.
When I first bought the computer it stalled and the video went black almost every time I used it t play video. After I did the software update the problem went away for the most part. Now the video only crashes about once a week. This is why I am only giving it 4 stars. Overall though, I would by this laptop again in a second. It is light years ahead of everything else I checked out and I am not a Mac guy. They are less prone to software and software based hardware complications but they don't advance as quickly and you pay a high premium for lesser hardware.

I bought this computer for me and my boys to use. This is the first Toshiba that I have ever owned, and I love it. It has really good graphics and the sound is also good. I wanted to wait a while before I wrote this review to make sure that nothing went wrong. It has now been over a month and I haven't had any problems at all. I would recommend this computer to anyone.

This was a bargain deal for me. The moment I clicked the buy button, the price of this product went up, as it was a one time opened piece. Thanks to Amazon policies as the seller contacted me and made me aware of this fact. I am happy with the performance of this unit. i5 3210 is a good option and shows reasonable power. Considering the fact that this Laptop does not contain a separate graphic card, I am using it for my office work.... and it meets my expectations. The Battery life is reasonably long and for routine office work with word & excel, it lasts for more than 3,4 hours. The adapter is very small [ tiny] and does not add to the weight. However the original Laptop is heavy.The speakers do a very good job. The look and feel is also nice. Overall I love this piece.
The hard drive on the laptop is pretty slow making the computer slow overall. Maybe it's not that bad. I may just be used to SSDs.
I upgraded the laptop with a SSD and 8GB of RAM and the laptop screams. It is the fastest computer I have had and I come from a not so old mac that had a SSD. The computer boots up in only 10 seconds from the time I press the power button to the desktop. I installed windows 8 and I have no problems at all. I did install some drivers from the asus website.
Pros:
-Fast Ivy bridge processor.
-not too heavy
-good build quality
-never gets hot, even while gaming for hours it just gets a little warm.
-quiet. I never hear the fans with normal use. While gaming I can barely hear them.
-sound is good. I haven't tested how loud they can get since I always use headphones but whenI used them they sounded very clear and looked loud considering volume was at less than half.
-battery it's fine. Not the best battery life out there but it's normal for a laptop like this.
Cons:
-stock hard drive too slow. I bought a SSD
-It is only using one RAM slot, which makes it slower. I bought a pair of samsung RAM and the Windows experience index jumped from 6.something to 7.5. (everything but the graphics is above 7.0)
-the space bar in the keyboard doesn't always register when you press it. You just have to press it all the way and its fine.
-I which the screen had more viewing angles, but I don't complain because this is a cheap laptop
I recomend this laptop to anyone. Whether you are looking for a laptop for school, just browsing the internet, videos, light gaming, etc this is a good choice if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Pros: Lightweight, plenty of storage and memory, instant on technology.Cons: OS was faulty from the get go, freezing and crashing within a month. Finally got it to stop after the 3rd restore, this time using back-up disks from another computer. The touch pad is as others have described very touchy and you end up touching it unintentionally. This results in text inadvertently highlighted and deleted, inserted into the wrong place and sometimes tricky navigation.
Overall, it can do what you want a Win 7 computer to do. Why it comes with all the Pen and Touchscreen software installed is beyond me this is not a touchscreen computer. But expect some hiccups here and there. We've really tried to get used to the mouse pad and adjust the settings, etc., but there is just no getting around it. It is poorly designed/positioned.
There are better laptops out there for the price or less. I would encourage you to buy one of those, not this one.

Got this peice of equipment for christmas, and first off, i loved the feel of the windows 8 along with not having to use the apps side of it, it almost has a windows 7 feel. so as soon as i opened it, i went to install cod4, i was a little worried because on system requirement labs it said i only had 35 mb of dedicated video ram, i was surprised because average for even the low end pc is 256mb, so i was worried but knew the worst to come would be little jumps and lags, but no, cod4 on medium settings gave me about a 65-70 framerate, (not including shadows and antiantalyzing) at the strange resolution of 1366x 768 which is one i had never seen, so after that i purchased MW3, it gives me a 4591 (cap) framerate on low settings, which is AMAZING, not sure and if someone could answer why blackops 1 gives me only 15-55 when there is no cap.so off to the pros.

Apple MacBook MB061LL/A 13.3" Notebook PC (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard
This is a great laptop. First, let me say, I'm a software developer, so I'm very particular about my computers. I was in the market for a new laptop. After a lot of shopping around, I went with a laptop from HP for around $700. It was my first PC with Vista, and it was frustratingly slow. Here's an example... Put your laptop into sleep mode. Come out of sleep mode, and how long does it take to connect to your WiFi network? The HP laptop would take about 45 seconds while the macbook takes less than 5 seconds. It's a small detail, but it's the tip of the iceberg.So, after I purchased my HP laptop, my wife bought a macbook. I was so impressed, I took mine back and got my own macbook. The battery is great. I haven't timed it yet, but it's easily over three hours. The LCD is great. You don't get all that bloatware that comes with a new PC (like antivirus software that you can't seem to delete) that fills up your new hard disk. And, there's no need to even worry about antivirus software since 99.9% of viruses are designed for Windows.
As for performance, these macbooks are plenty zippy. And, yes dual core does make a difference. If you like to multitask (browse the web while playing mp3 music), then you'll notice the difference. The user interface is more responsive during heavy loading. Just for fun, I took a program I wrote for work and ran it on my new macbook. (I won't bore you with the details of what it does, but it's CPU intensive.) On the HP laptop, the program took about 13 minutes to run. On the macbook, it took 3 min, 30 seconds. Just for fun, I ran the same program on a fully loaded Dell 820 ($3000), and it finished in about 3 minutes. So, I'm very pleased with the performance of this macbook.
And, there are great open source (free) applications you can get for Mac OS X now. So, I quickly installed Firefox, Thunderbird (email), NeoOffice (MS Office replacement), Chicken of the Sea (VNC client), XAMPP (Apache/PHP/MySQL), Transmission (BitTorrent), Burn (CD/DVD burner), and Eclipse (Java development).
The only way they could improve this macbook would be to bundle the DVD writer in the entry-level model instead of a combo drive (CD writer, DVD reader). It's not an issue with me since I have many other DVD writers on my LAN, but others may want to purchase the next model up that comes with the DVD writer.
From the first time Mac user, I'm very pleased with Apple hardware and software, it just works. And I'm impressed with how it all works together.
As for this specific version of the macbook, I have found no problems at all, works beautifully as advertised. The only thing I found is that mabook's screen needs to be calibrated or adjusted. Don't settle for default screen profile, pictures will appear washed out. Calibrate screens settings; you should be able to get it pretty close to what it should be with just what macbook has in OS X.
I also recommend buying this model, since it has a bigger harddrive, its worth it. This laptop is very fast and reliable!I will try to give a unbiased and responsible review of this MacBook. As a college student I struggled with the decision between purchasing a Windows laptop or a MacBook, but due to all the horror stories out there about Vista imcompatibility and my previous Windows nightmares, I decided to give Mac a try. I don't regret it. The screen is glossy and beautiful, albeit the 13.3" screen can make the font in programs (especially in instant messaging programs) a bit small. You can adjust the font to larger size in, say, AIM, but then that would render the person you are talking to to receive ridiculously large font sizes from you as well. And, if you are new to MAC OSX, there is definitely a learning curve and an experimental phase, so you should be patient; fortunately, there are alot of MAC OSX tutorial sites on the web and resources as well. I love the fast fast FAST boot time (around 20 seconds!!!) from off to on. BRAVO!! And the 2.0 ghz processor is more than enough for me. The MacBook is also very very silent. One thing I don't like though is the mouse track pad. Even on the fastest sensitivity setting, it just doesn't keep up with my fingers. A bit annoying, but a problem that can be solved with an external USB mouse. Let's see how my MacBook holds up in the next four years.[UPDATE: Written 18 months after the review below: Compared to my iBook this machine proved better built (on the outside), maintained a tighter-action keyboard, was noticeably faster--for 15 months, at which point the hard drive simply, suddenly, and unexpectedly, died.] It's predecessor, the iBook, on the other hand, developed problems like letters disappearing from the keys of the keyboard along with the keyboard action becoming sloppy, loose, and chattery. I'd rather replace a keyboard than a hard-drive any day, but I probably got my money's worth out of both machines (Apple's least expensive models). If I had to do it again, I'd order the extended warranty plan with any Apple laptop. It's expensive, and it's not guarantee (if Apple judges the damage due to the user's incorrect or inappropriate use of the machine), but if it's a laptop and it sees heavy use, the two extra years are probably worth the several hundred extra. (With desktop models I'm still inclined not to buy the extended warranty.)}
I ordered my last small-screen iBook from Amazon just two summers ago. As usual, my heavy touch started shorting out the keyboard, and I couldn't afford several weeks of down time. Factor in the wait, the cost of repairs, and the improvements, and this 13" MacBook from Amazon seemed the best way to go.
It's about a hundred bucks more than the prior edition but worth it. The screen is wider, sharper and brighter (though I had no complaints with the predecessor). The speed of unloading internet pages is noticeably faster, a time-saver. The magnetically attached power cord should save the user the cost of an Apple adapter or two (about $80 each time you snap the thin wire). The keyboard area is larger, which is nice, though the different feel of the tracking area and right thumb-click (little play--it barely seems to go down) takes a bit of getting used to.
I didn't need a built-in camera or remote control, but what can you do. At least I was able to avoid the Superdrive (haven't found much use for DVD burning) and all the extras (and sales tax) they push if you buy from Apple Store. This machine doesn't require any additional memory or RAM, unless you're a heavy duty movie editor/audio engineer. It's a one-click purchase. I even took a pass on Apple's current iPod incentive (I still buy CDs, mostly from Amazon).
Even as I type this review, I'm conscious that the keyboard has a tighter feel and is quieter than the previous model. It also gets around in the often cumbersome and sluggish MS Word more quickly than the comparable machine of only two years ago. A great little work horse, and the transfer of information from your old computer has never been easier (make sure you have a firewire cable handy).I have been used to blazing fast desktops for years. This mac really combines all of the great features and capabilities you would expect from a powermac into a great little package.

I thought the gloss display would bug me, but I love it.
Not sure I will want to go back to my desktop now that I have the freedom of wireless!
On thing I will note: The white plastic is like static cling. Dust, hair and dirt just love attaching to it.
ALSO, this does NOT come with a VGA adapter. If you plan on giving presentations, you will need to pick one up.
