Great value for money and does everything you want from a laptop computer. From your every day word processing to graphic design, video editing, etc., it does it all. Anyone needing a laptop or a home computer for all needs without breaking the bank should look no further than this laptop computer.

The keys bounce very badly, I didn't have the experience to know that this was what was happening until I showed someone who did.

It will probably be the last electronic thing that I buy from the big "A" .

Acer Aspire V5-571-6806 15.6" LAPTOP(Core i5-3317U,6GB RAM,750GB HDD, Windows 8, 802.11a/g/n,webcam

Acer Aspire V5-571-6806 15.6' LAPTOP(Core i5-3317U,6GB RAM,750GB HDD, Windows 8, 802.11a/g/n,webcam) SilverI have found this computer to be excellent. However, when I purchased it despite the horror stories about windows 8. The system is slow, cumbersome and skips from one window to the other. I have contacted Microsoft and Acer. Neither of them wants to help me go back to windows 7 which was an excellent operating system. The problem is that I am 74 and the $114 to purchase windows 7 is costly. My recommendation is to stat with Windows7.

keyboard is not responsive sometimes and its hard for me to teach my dad how to use a computer when the keys barely work

Haven't test it completely but so far, and for basic jobs..it's awesome!! Perfect if you don't have a high budget and you're a looking for a mid-basic laptop.

What I now can write as pros are:

Lightweight and thin

Awesome sound

Average webcam resolution....like 1.3 mpx if I'm not wrong but it works.

Soft keyboard

Turbo boost it's amazing! you'll have your laptop up in less than 4 secs. Even when having many apps open for more than a week and using it everyday.

Great processor so far. While having many normal apps working at the same time, the system haven't crashed.

Screen resolution amazing.

What's not so good by now:

No key Locks light, you have to depend on software warnings when caps are on/off. But this only affects when u're entering a password.

Mousepad. Even I think this is a common issue, it does get touched when you're writing and more if you're concentrated. But you can always deactivate it (fn+7).

All usb ports are on the left side. So, beware if you're planning to buy or if you have a short wired mouse. Everything goes to the left.

This is not a cons for me but if you do a lot of presentations using a projector by vga, be sure to take the adapter with you all the time (cable with vga and rj-45 ports is included).

Read on many reviews that this laptop has issues with it's wifi card, which I haven't had yet.

For the ones that are afraid or had trouble with windows 8.. easy, downgrade to windows 7 or use any linux distribution, so you won't get lost.

If you need more specs (not to many here), go to: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model-datasheet/NX.M1JAA.011

Will update (hope I don't forget), when I test this laptop better.

Great laptop at the price. User friendly, thin & light but capable. Zero issues so far. Still learning Windows 8 but desktop mode lets me use old methods in meantime.

Dell Inspiron 14z 14-Inch Laptop Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz 6GB 32GB SSD+500GB DVD±RW

Dell Inspiron 14z 14-Inch Laptop Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz 6GB 32GB SSD+500GB DVD±RW1st this is 3rd generation intel not 2nd generation.

This is a good laptop and I don't understand such harsh reviews. I too was having some internet connections issues and after a couple of calls to Dell, I was helped by a tech that went to Wireless Device Driver and made the follow values under the Advanced Tab and it helped!!!

802.11b Preamble = long only

802.11n Bandwidth = 20 Hz/40Hz Auto

Network Address = 1234567890AB

recieve buffers = 256

scan valid interval = 60

Transmit buffers = 512

I don't know why they don't come set this way, but that did help!!

Also it comes with hibernate and sleep to happen to fast and then it ends up shutting down improperly, but just modify those to get rid of that problem too. Otherwise this laptop is lightweight, with a fantastic screen.

I bought this from Amazon and saved too!

Edit: It has one HDMI input.

This if a very nice, very responsive ultrabook. Mine has never disconnected from my wifi and I have had it for almost a month. The screen has brilliant color and sharp resolution. Only weighs 4 lbs and its .8 of an inch thick and you still get an optical drive, can't beat that.

It looks slick closed and open. I get about four to five hours on the battery with moderate to heavy use.

As for people with the wifi problem if you look on Dell's support site the problem could be with the pre installed McAfee anti-virus blocking the wifi. I uninstalled McAfee as soon as i got it and installed Norton so maybe thats why I never had a problem with the wifi.

Long story short this is a very good ultrabook regardless of the bad reviews that I have read. With the I5 processor, 32gb SSD, 6GB of Ram this thing flys. Oh its also well made and sturdy.

Overall, I like this laptop a lot. It feels very solid, and it is reasonably lightweight. I prefer the 720p screen on a 14 inch laptop, so that is not a problem. However, there are two things I wish were better. First, the battery life is very mediocre no more than 4 hours of browsing the Internet and reading mail. Second, and much more of a problem, is that the network card is not good at all. It drops connections every few minutes, even though the signal is strong. The computer is turning off the wireless card to save energy, and failing re-enable it. There is an OS setting for this, but that hasn't solved the problem.

I received my Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook yesterday and over all I really like the product. First, it is a good value for the features it offers. Intel core i5 processor is huge for the price. Second it has a hybrid 32gb single state drive (SSR) in addition to the 500 gb hard drive, that is why it is super fast when booting up with a ton of memory. The 14z has a nice design, I don't mind how far apart the keys are and I don't mind that there are port covers on the sides of the ultrabook. It is also pretty sturdy...seems to be well made externally with a nice brushed aluminium case. A really cool feature is that Dell managed to fit in an optical drive in the slim design, this is nice since I did not have one with my two-year old Dell Inspiron 11z, though I really liked that little laptop, the screen was a bit too small with amount of word processing and spread sheets I do for school.

I have not had any issues with the touch pad so far, however, I have a problem with the Dell wireless card and loosing the connection with the internet too easily. If the signal is below three bars I get disconnected every couple of minutes, which is pretty frustrating especially since I take college courses online and do a lot of work online. I am hoping some of these issues get fixed in the next couple of days before I attend my next online class session. I am keeping my fingers crossed that nothing else negative will occur like some of the reviews I read on here. But other reviews I read online are mostly positive with the odd lemon here and there. In my opinion there will always be a lemon in any batch of consumer products, yet this does not excuse Dell from slipping on quality and implementing strict quality control standards. I believe Dell is still a decent product but they got to keep their game up in this competitive market. Otherwise they are going to lose repeat customers, like myself.

By the way I did purchase my Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook through Amazon and saved a decent amount of money (20%). Costco was selling it at the same price with an instant rebate (in store only) that reduced it to $699 but this was only for a limited time. Amazon is the best place to buy if you don't want to custom order one from the Dell website. The wait time is much reduced as well. I ordered my last Dell laptop and it took about 3 weeks to get it delivered because there was a hold up in parts. This laptop was delivered in three business days, standard shipping.

I just wanted to add an update since I received my laptop two weeks ago. I was able to fix the connectivity issues by adjusting the default settings in the network connection menu and that fixed my laptop dropping the connection every five minutes. That was from the help I got from reading one of reviews instructions on how to fix the connection problems. Thanks much for that! Also if any of you have issues with playing video games, such as video freezing and then the game crashing, like with Sims 3, for example then your laptop has the processing power to play the graphics, it is just the video card that needs to have the latest video card driver installed and I had absolutely no issues playing my game when the new drivers were installed.

To sum up how I feel about the Dell Inspiron 14z ultrabook, I would say it is great to use, and I use it A LOT, once all the bugs were ironed out. :)

A Happy Dell Customer.

From the very beginning started to have problems with the Internet connection. Sometimes it just disappears. It is not my wifi, because other two notebooks I have work perfectly well. Googled it and seems like a common problem on dell notebooks with Windows 7. I also find the touch-pad not very responsive: you have to hit it really hard in order to make a click. I tried to change that in the settings, but could not. Tried to contact the support service yesterday, but they were not very helpful. Very negative impressions so far. Stay away from it.

Update: the problem of internet connection was solved after contacting the support service. However, I still have problems with the touch pad. Although I managed to also solve the touch pad problem described above, it is still not very responsive and jittery. For some reason the clicklock or draglock (or I don't know what that function is called) activates by itself every time I start the machine. To deactivate it I just have to open and immediately close the mouse properties window. To avoid this problem I just use a regular mouse. I am also not very happy with the battery life. It doesn't last more than 3-4 hours with normal browsing.

MSI Computer Corp. Notebook GE70 0ND-213US;9S7-175611-213 17.3-Inch Laptop

MSI Computer Corp. Notebook GE70 0ND-213US;9S7-175611-213 17.3-Inch LaptopThe windows experience is as follows: cpu:7.9, Memory: 7.9 3D Graphics:6.9 Hard drive 5.9. I added a SSD windows experience is : 8.1 And 16 gig Ram: 8.1.This a incredible machine. Does not have a back-lit keyboard but the keyboard is very good. Reloaded and upgraded OS to Windows 8 pro since it comes with window 8. Very happy. Has slot for internal SSD also in addition to hard drive. Screen is good also.

Pros:

* Fast, high-performance processor

* Multi-touch pad

* Good, loud speakers (4x)

* Full keyboard, easy to type

* Large screen, great for editing/watching videos

* HDMI, USB 3.0, Multi-card reader

Cons:

* Mine came with a dead pixel; eventually went away

* Large and heavy, but still somewhat portable

* Battery life is dismal -not even 2 hours

* No dedicated "home" and "end" keys

* Windows key positioned on the right (takes getting used to)

Description:

This is a superb sub $1,500 laptop. The video card (Nvidia GTX 660, 2GB) is better than the one in the 15" Macbook Pro w/Retina (Nvidia GT 650, 1GB) -shame on you Apple -and the processor is also amazing. The screen is also nice, but as other have pointed out, it's nothing special. Mine came with a dead pixel, which I was pretty upset about, but it eventually went away with the use of free software.

I am able to edit videos without any problem using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and editing photos is also a breeze. Using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other programs for creating and publishing content also works very well. Frankly, this is a better buy over any Macbook.

The design isn't something I was too excited about when looking at the pictures but in person it's actually not that bad. I prefer the sleek look of the Macbook Pros, but the price tag and increased performance this laptop gives me is worth more than its looks.

Upgradeability is an important factor in this laptop. You can upgrade it from 8GB RAM to 16GB which I plan on doing, as well as adding a mSSD for caching purposes (for even faster performance) and, potentially, replacing the CD/DVD drive with a HDD bay. We'll see.

Bottom line:

Get this laptop if you want a large but powerful gaming/video editing laptop. Not for people who want ultra portability and long battery life.

Has the mSATA slot, Full HD 1920X1080p screen and a WD Black 7200rpm HDD. When I was looking at buying a laptop I read a lot of reviews about this and other similar laptops. I couldn't find a definite answer whether this particular model had the mSATA or not. It does. The procedure to migrate is pretty simple. This comes with the MSI BurnRecovery software which makes recovery DVD's that restores your HDD image. I needed 5 DVD-R's to do this. After I made those I removed the stock HDD (Western Digital Black 7200rpm) and installed a Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT120GB-DX mSATA 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) drive. Need to find a screw to secure the mSATA because the drive does not come with one and you cannot install without it. It's the same screw that would secure a mini card like a wireless card, modem or Bluetooth. Important!-Get into the bios by pressing Del when the MSI logo pops up and disable the secure boot option in the Bios. Booted from the recovery DVD's and restored the image to the mSATA drive. This puts 5 partitions onto that drive-EFI boot sector, Windows recovery, OS partition, Data partition and Recovery partition. Opened computer management after reboot and removed the data partition. I also removed the recovery partition which is about 17 GB because I have the backup DVD's. Extend the OS partition to the unallocated space. This gives you about 100GB for your OS. Get back into the Bios and enable the secure boot option again and boot into your OS. Shut down, reinstall the HDD and reboot. Go to Settings, Change PC Settings, General and select Advanced Startup. When it restarts get to the command prompt. Type in "DISKPART", enter, "list disk", enter. Find the disk that is 698GB (should be disk 0) then type in "select disk 0", enter, "clean", enter, "Y" because yes you are sure you want to wipe the drive. Reboot, get into computer management, activate disk and make the partitions you want. I moved all of the library file folders to the single "Data" partition I made on that drive. Music, Videos, Documents and Downloads. Installed 'most' programs on the OS drive and still have about 20GB left. Takes seconds to boot now with no stability issues at all.

A lot of reviews say this laptop is a little flimsy or fragile and does not seem durable. If you live your life with a broken screen on your cell phone I would not recommend this laptop for you. It is, however, thin and light which is why I chose this particular one. Take care of your stuff and it will last! If not, buy the extended warranty. You cannot set up the mSATA as a Cache drive on this laptop due to the Bios not being able to create a RAID array so a 32GB or 64GB mSATA purchase will result in nothing but hate and discontent because you will only get 32 or 64GB of additional storage out of it. Or, a compacted Windows install with the need to buy aftermarket file management software to store system and program files on the Data drive. If you do this and have to wait for the transfer rate of the spin drive what is point of going to mSATA in the first place?

I've had this for about a month now and love it. When I bought this I also bought the mSATA drive and 16GB of ram (this is manufacturers limit) G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GSQ the entire process to do the upgrades took me about two weeks because there isn't much info on migrating the OS without an OEM Windows install disk or some software that doesn't work because of the EFI partitions. I refused to buy another OS when the laptop I just bought has one. There is very little bloatware on this laptop, MS Office setup, MSI BurnRecovery, Battery Calibration and SuperCharger. That's about it. No additional toolbars or ads as you would get with other manufacturers. If you duplicate my procedure the process should take you no more than an hour or two unless you have already put your own stuff on the laptop. In that case you just have to back up your files and then put them back on when you wipe the drive. If you don't want to wipe the drive you can just delete the OS partition but then you end up with dynamic instead of a basic partition because when you extend your Data partition you extend it to the left instead of the right. One last item-performance and graphics. I use this to play WoW and I have the graphics set to Ultra settings. The lowest frame rate I recall seeing is 27fps but definitely no performance issues even at the ultra setting.

PROS:

screen; great colors and viewing angles

sound; I installed zune because of my phone the THX driver is great

noise level; only one fan but surprisingly it stays cool and the fan on "turbo" is audible but the speakers can easily overpower the noise otherwise its lower noise than similar laptops.

gpu; NVidia GTX 660m it runs crisis 2 at ultra(tested without aa on)

cpu; i7 nuf said

CONS:

multitouch pad; is rocker style and stiff seems to be breaking in after a solid day though

keyboards not backlit (not really a con; just would be nice)

no dedicated volume control; surprisingly a larger issue than I originally thought.. its fn+left/right or through software

notes:

it came with a corrupted wifi driver and usb ports didn't work properly:

the drivers disk it came with was also corrupted so I had to use a lifeline from my old laptop to get it working.

once I got the bios and drivers updated and working it was fine and it runs fast. I tested crysis the game wanted "gamer" specs for some reasion but it ran at 60fps (as the overclock drivers should) on "Ultra" and it was barley warm after 1 hour of game time.(i had the fan Turbo on)

worth mentioning:

windows score sets the gpu score at 5.4, however this is just a bug in how windows defaults the GPU on the i7 instead of the dedicated Nvidia GTX 660m.

supports 16gb ram upgrade and an empty mSATA bay(not to be confused with a SATA bay)

Issues with wireless, issues with operating system (built-in apps not functioning). Lenovo support wanted to charge me to help me solve their software issues on a brand new computer that didn't work out of the box outrageous! Microsoft support solved those for me (they were friendly, helpful and effective)...I called them after Lenovo tried to charge me for fixing a flawed new product. Lenovo was unable to fix the adapter issue also so now I have to re-format the computer (after setting everything up), send it in to their support, wait and hope they can resolve it...

It's a lot of hardware for the price but definitely not worth the head-aches.

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Convertible Tablet (X230T, newer model of X220T) (Premium)

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Convertible TabletI custom-ordered from the Lenovo/Thinkpad site. My configuration:

Thinkpad X230 Tablet

+ Core i7 2.90 GHz Ivy Bridge processor

+ 8 GM RAM

+ 128 GB Solid-State Drive

+ 1366x768 Matte Multi-Touch Screen with Active Stylus

+ 9-cell extended battery (sticks out the back and adds a bulge at the bottom; the 6-cell battery just sticks out the back)

+ Windows 7 Pro

+ Ultra-Base 3 with DVD/RW optical drive

No discrete graphics card option

I've been a long-time Thinkpad fan--including 600E (late 1990s), R40 (early 2000s), T42 (mid 2000s), T420 (late 2000s)--for the rock-solid dependability, non-nonsense styling, and in particular the king-of-them-all keyboard. I mistakely tried a Dell Latitude E6400 for a couple of years, and I truly hated it, despite its own pointer stick and solid construction. When I decided to get this X230 Tablet, the only thing I was worried about was how the new keyboard was going to feel. Well, have no fear. I am a big fan of the new keyboard. It's got deep travel, its motion is the perfect blend between smooth travel and pleasing resistance, and the contoured surface actually feels comforable. This new keyboard is a winner. Other than that, there really isn't anything that needs to be said about this machine that the prospective buyer wouldn't already know. I loaded it up to the gills with the fastest and best of everything, except a 3G cellular card--totalled over $3000 MSRP before a the Ultrabase 3 and extra power adapters. On paper, the only thing the X230T lacks is discrete graphics, but the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics that comes with the Ivy Bridge chipset is good enough for my occasional Engineering analysis and 3D modeling work--just make sure to get a least 8 GB RAM to share with the inegrated graphics. Plus, the Ultrabase 3 is able to support dual monitors via its dual VGA+DisplayPort ports. Just one final tip--get the Multitouch screen; you'll be ready for Windows 8 Pro when it's released.

2012-11-24 UPDATE: I installed Windows 8 Pro upgrade on this computer the week Windows 8 was released. On the first boot-up, everything worked. I the installed all the Lenovo-provided Windows 8 drivers for this machine, and everything continued to work fine. Windows 8 works very well on this machine, as if it was designed for it.

This is a review of both (1) The Amazon Seller, "GW Store" and (2) Lenovo build quality and warranty service.

(1) Good

(2) Really BAD

That's it in a nutshell. Interested in details? Read on.

To be fair, I should be clear that the Amazon Seller, "GW Store" made available to me every option they could offer in helping me deal with the problems. They sell a Lenovo X230 Tablet that is well spec'd and was just what I needed for an extended trip abroad. That was the "Good". It was a "3434-CTO" unit and came with just a 1 year depot warranty.

Lenovo? The feature set looked to be exactly what was necessary for my needs. When the unit arrived, however, it died just a few hours out of the box. I contacted Lenovo support, and we agreed it was a dead main board. I contacted GW Store about a replacement. and they were out of stock and could not say they would have a new shipment in time to meet my fast approaching departure date. So, I sent it to Lenovo for warranty repair. I had about 3 weeks and surely it would be OK.

After a few days I checked the status online and found that it was on "Hold" for parts. Lenovo Memphis TN warranty facility did not have a main board? Wow. They must have been using a lot of them. I know the drill, so I called to escalate this to a manager. After a week, the board evidently came in, but then the online status screen indicated another "Hold". I quickly contacted the manager and learned it was on hold now for a cable! I explained my time constraints again and he told me that he had found 50 cables available but Memphis had been waiting on a cable to come through as usual.

Altogether, the unit was at Memphis for more than two weeks.

When it arrived, I began to set it up and quickly discovered that the ONLY working feature of the upper (display) assembly was the LCD and backlight. No touch, no speakers, no LED indicators (both front and back) no power-on button in tablet mode etc... Nada.

At that point, I checked GW Store and they had received a shipment. I ordered a replacement overnighted and sent the first unit back. In wrapping this up with GW Store, I learned that their tech was finding Lenovo uncooperative as well.

I am now traveling, and it has been 10 days with the second unit. So far, so good. If a new device works this long, it's probably OK. 90 days from now if it's still good I will feel better.

Bottom line, if you want to develop phone / tablet apps, this is a great computer for it.

Specs were for programming Visual Studio 2012 and Eclipse Juno (and occasionally Force.com IDE / Salesforce.com and WordPress). I also occasionally use Adobe CS suite and Microsoft SQL Server for developers 2012 as well as The VS tools and Office 2013...

Intel i7 CPU @ 2.90

16 GB ram

Windows 8 64 bit (upgraded from Windows 7)

Hard Disk: 500 gig no SSD

Docking station

Why Selected:

I selected it because it seemed the best/ easiest way to write mobile apps and easily debug in using the virtual hardware, touch screen and it is GREAT for this.

What's Wrong:

Firstthe computer was incomplete out of the box, Wi-Fi did not work and camera did not work. Two visits from support and this was fixed. I have come to expect this from many vendors, not just computer vendors. So no stars taken. Initially talking with Lenovo, support was REALLY BAD. I expected "Business Customer" support not "Consumer Level"

Summary:

As a software development machine, it's perfect, fast, and easy to test touch screen capabilities of virtual phones. With the docking station I can attach 6 phones and tablets for easy testing and debugging.

I don't use the touchpad, I had significant problems with my laser mouse, but found the right driver (system could not determine the correct driver) and solved the problem.

The tools with Lenovo to maintain updates is very easy to use and I appreciate it, I had to download all the Windows 8 updates, took a long time (why no single package I don't know), most functionality is supported in Windows 8, I had low expectations, so was pleasantly surprised. The utilities of Lenovo are really nice, I don't worry about maintaining my environment.

What I miss:

I wish it had a great on board video card (I knew it did not) because I would like to drive multiple IPS 27 inch monitors and play the occasional leading edge computer game. Games, I have another machine, multiple 27 inch monitors, there is no work around.

MSI Computer Corp. MSI GE60 2OE-003US;9S7-16GC11-003 15.6-Inch LaptopI got this laptop about 8 hours ago, and I love it. Let me break it down.

Pros:

Powerful (not top of the line, but powerful) gaming machine

Everything runs smooth

Big, bright screen

Comfortable keyboard

Cooling boost

Cons:

Windows 8

Small left shift key

Everything is pretty much self explanatory here.

I played Tera on it for about 3 hours, and it didn't even start to get as hot as my other laptop, which turns into a lava pit at the mere mention of "Netflix." Didn't even have to use the cooling boost option, which is fantastic by the way.

Overall, I'm happy. I'll update if anything goes wrong, but I doubt it will.

Edit: It is now Day 2. I noticed that the charger gets incredibly hot when used for a few hours. My old laptop didn't do that, though my old laptop didn't game, either. Not sure how bad this is, but its something to keep in mind. Also, the cooling boost option is fantastic. The laptop would probably die without it.

ASUS U56E-BAL7 15.6" Laptop (Intel Quad-Core i5-2450M CPU, 750GB HDD, 6GB Memory, UMA Graphics, USB

ASUS U56E-BAL7 15.6' LaptopI've had this notebook for 5 months now and I don't regret the purchase. Good battery life, nice keyboard and a good amount of RAM makes it a great deal. I've trusted asus for many years going back where it only made PC's motherboards.

As a previous reviewer said, speakers are OK for this kind of computer. Don't expect hugh quality audio! but I guess it's something common in almost all laptops.

USB 3.0 it's a plus, along with an HDMI port.

double check the price though, amazon has this unit a bit overpriced.

You've read the specs so you know what's in the machine and it's got a lot to offer. For me the outstanding feature is the long battery life. I needed a decent machine with a long life and this one has it. I would give it a better rating except for the speakers. They are merely okay, nothing spectacular, just okay. It would have been nice to have a backlit keyboard too, but that would shorten the battery life. The graphics, intel 3000, are built into the cpu and does what I want but, it isn't a heavy gaming gpu. I've had mine for about a month now and I would certainly buy it again; sorry I didn't get it here as I found it cheaper elsewhere. So, if you need a longer battery life, mine gets around 8 hours of actual use, definitely take a serious look at the Asus U series.

P.S. I've read where some people are having trouble with the trac pad. I haven't had that problem, but it is something to look into before you buy. Knowing what I know I would still buy this one again.

I purchased this laptop at BestBuy about 4 months ago. I was replacing a 5 year old Sony Vaio that had it's wireless switch crap out. I still use the Vaio in a docking station hard wired to the network and it works great. The ASUS was $599.00 so it was cheaper than Amazon has it but I would have paid higher for it. The battery life alone sets it apart from any laptop I have ever owned. I get 8 hours plus when unplugged and that is running videos, surfing, picture uploading and wireless on. It took me awhile to get used to the keyboard set up, the keys actually pop up individually from the laptop but since I have been using it, it is actually really easy to use. Huge HD and it came with 6 GIGs of Ram, I was thinking of taking it to 8 GIGs to max it out but I really don't think it needs the extra two. Screen is very clear and it all works great. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who was looking. The price point and quality are both excellent.

Update: 2/1/2013 Just sent this laptop off to Asus to have it repaired. I believe that the hard drive failed, it would not let me restore or factory reset. Went into a death loop spiral with chkdsk in DOS mode. So frustrating considering it never left my ottoman, ever. 8 months, not a good sign...

Update: 3/4/2013 Received the laptop back about 2 weeks ago. Mother board was bad and HD had a bad section, or so they said. Laptop has been running fine since I got it back, except that I have experienced the very long black screen start a couple times again. This was the reason I was trying to restore it before when it finally died on me. I am just backing everything up daily and hopefully it will last. I really like the computer and it does everything I need it to do. I will keep my fingers crossed.

This computer is really fast and the keyboard feels nice. This was my first laptop so I was surprised by a few things. The speakers on this one are mousy quiet. ASUS does that on this model to save battery power. The keyboard is not backlit either for the same reason. So far that has not been a problem. I had to change the setting for TouchPad Sensativity. I set if from very slight touch to maximum touch (which I recommend) because the touchpad was clicking on links all day long without me even trying. Ahhh, just the slightest touch activated that thing which was no touch at all. So I changed that, and I love this computer.

Bought a refurbished product at a real discount. The DVD drive was broken but the seller sent a replacement within a few days. The performance of the computer is excellent. The energy usage is far better than the other laptops I use. I intend to copy its settings to use in my other computers. The battery life is fantastic as well. The profile of the laptop is sleet and attractive while the battery sticks out as sort of a rest to incline the laptop for typing. I like it but it may not be for everyone. The keyboard is nice but is not backlite if that is important to you. Its nice that it has a numeric pad but they are small keys so it takes a bit of an adjustment to use effectively.

The only con I've had so far is the sound. I read that it was bad but I could not believe it is as bad as it is. The sound is far worst than any laptop I've ever had. I am not very picky about sound quality but the volume is low and very tinny sounding. You should plan on using add on computer speakers for sound.

I recommend this computer unless you can't live with the sound issues.

Dell Inspiron 17R Core i7-3632QM Quad-Core 2.20GHz 8GB 1TB DVD±RW 17.3" Win 8 Laptop w/Webcam, Blu

Dell Inspiron 17R Core i7-3632QM Quad-Core 2.20GHz 8GB 1TB DVD±RW 17.3' Win 8 Laptop w/Webcam, BluetoothI bought this laptop mostly based on the 3rd generation i7 processor, 8 GB of memory, and Terabyte drive. However, I made some assumptions that came back to bite me. Since this model is primarily sold as a home/entertainment computer and includes an HDMI port to directly connect to a TV, as well as Intel's WiDi to wirelessly connect to a TV, you would think it was optimized to download and stream movies. But you would be wrong, because it has both obsolete wired and wireless networking connections which is so surprising to me that I didn't even think to investigate them before buying this device. I did not buy from Amazon, but they should be commended for making it very clear in the first bullet points on the page: "Integrated 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, 10/100 Ethernet LAN". The current standard for Ethernet LANs is Gigabit (1000 megabit), and has been for some years, which is why it is difficult to find devices with the obsolete 10/100 ports anymore. Most current WiFi devices use the dual band N standard, which this laptop does not support. Many current computers support the newer dual band AC standard, for which routers are readily available. So far, no upgrade path is available for this computer to use the higher speed networks, other than buying external adapters and using up the precious USB ports, of which there are only 4, 2 USB3 and 2 USB2 ports. This brings up another question why aren't they all USB3 ports? USB3, dual band N WiFi and Gigabit Ethernet are basics that should be included on all laptops today, especially a higher end unit like the 17R. The performance of the wireless and wired networks on this computer can only be described as frustratingly and disappointingly slow.

This computer also is lacking a TPM chip which makes it a lot harder to encrypt the hard drive using the BitLocker software included in Windows 8. Without the TPM chip, encryption and decryption is slower, and you have to hack the registry and use an external memory card or jump drive to store the keys, which can be lost, forcing a total erasure of the hard drive to use the computer.

This particular i7 processor is not the most powerful either. Because it has quad cores and a turbo mode, you would expect it to power through any frozen screen moments. But it doesn't seem to work that way. My experience includes the computer freezing several times a day, usually when I am doing nothing more than web browsing. The 64 bit Windows 8 doesn't seem to help much with that, either.

Also, if you are expecting a backlit keyboard that is frequently advertised for the 17R, it is not included on this model. The mouse pad does not work particularly well with Windows 8 and does not seem to support gestures. It also has the common problem of most mouse pads, it causes the cursor to jump all over the place when you are trying to type, frequently causing whole blocks of text to be selected and replaced by what you are typing, or to jump into other programs entirely. Most of the time I use an external keyboard and mouse. Hours spent adjusting settings have been futile.

The display is quite nice, but nothing spectacular, and at 3.3 pounds it is a heavy laptop that is too large to fit into most carrying cases.

It does support a second drive that can be used for a solid state drive that may shorten boot times and increase speed. The battery is OK, generally lasting about 3 hours when not plugged in.

HP Pavilion dm4-2015dx

HP Pavilion dm4-2015dxNice size portable notebook with 5.5 hours of battery life.

Intel i3-2310 CPU is vt-x hardware virtualization capable. Bios supports Virtualization, allowing you to turn the feature on or off within bios. Lots of notebooks have cpu's capable of virtualization, but not many allow you to activate the feature. This notebook does.

I purchased this notebook refurbished from Bestbuy. It came with 4 GB of RAM. A big bonus is that it only used one RAM slot for the entire 4GB, so one slot was available to add more RAM. To upgrade RAM to 8GB all I had to do was purchase a single 4GB strip of RAM.

Also, a great feature is a finger print reader which can be used to login to windows. I use it all the time. Now no one ever has the opportunity to peek and discover my login password. Just a swipe of the finger, and presto, login success.

This is a very well built PC. The brushed metal finish is very classy. If I had to choose a notebook today, I would not have any reservations about buying this one again. Very satisfied.

Dell Inspiron i15R-1579sLV 15-Inch Laptop

Dell Inspiron i15R-1579sLV 15-Inch LaptopFirst of all, let me state that I consider myself to be an above average PC user. I cut my teeth on mainframes and mini-computers, and bought my first PC back in the late 1970s. I have performed hardware and software support for a medium-sized company for a number of years. I am no longer actively supporting others' PCs, but am still involved in business and personal use of PCs normally providing my own basic hardware and software support.

I received my new Dell laptop about a month and a half ago. It has not been working for the past three weeks. When I turn the laptop on, the Dell logo displays, and the screen goes blank. Per Dell, I needed to contact them to work out any warranty issues. I had been on the phone with Dell, for two weeks off and on going over the same issues again and again with them. They assure me that they want to get the laptop fixed! They then sent me a boot disk (flash drive). The laptop will not recognize the flash drive. After several more days of discussion, they told me they would replace the disk drive, the motherboard, and the DVD player. This was 5 days ago. I finally got a call from the Dell authorized warranty repairman two days ago, but missed the call. I called back immediately, but he was out (I assume on another warranty repair job). After two more days with no returned calls, I called him again. He assured me I would be the first one on his list tomorrow!

I have nothing against the repairman, but I asked Dell if the parts could be sent to my local Dell authorized warranty repairman located two miles from me. Instead, they sent the parts to someone located 4 hours away!!!! Is this any way for Dell to keep warranty costs down???

I have been a fan of Dell pcs for a number of years, but I believe this will be my last dell purchase. The products seem to be great and normally reliable for a reasonable price, but if there are any warranty issues on new products where Dell needs to get involved, forget it.

Received the product Friday. Turns out a speaker is defective. Called Dell today only to be switched from one customer service guy to the next and after being on hold for a total of 1 1/2 hours they hung up on me. The last person who put me on hold said that he doesn't know what to do if a product is defective and he was going to put me on hold and find out. Phone got disconnected during my hold time and nobody bothered to call back. As if my defective computer would be magically fixed because I was passed around from one rep to the next. Tried getting back in touch with them only to get the voice response system that kept saying "sorry, I didn't understand that" and after me telling it over and over again that I want customer service I finally got a live person on the phone. That person also passed me off to another department and that voice mail said that they are only open M-F, as if the person who transferred me who works at Dell didn't know that! Then I call again and get another person who tells me the same thing and I ask to speak to manager. Some guy comes on the phone and says "sorry for the inconvenience" and that I have to call back Monday. Nobody cared that I was on the phone with them for over 2 hours at this point only to find out that I have to wait until Monday. I don't know what will happen on Monday but at this point I want to return this defective laptop and get my money back just so I never have to deal with such incompetent people again.

The screen started to have vertical fuzzy lines and after a week, the screen showed a blank. It would work after shaking the laptop. However, the vertical lines would appear again after 10 minutes. I learned that the lcd crystal broke down. Eventually, the screen didn't show anything. Completely caput.

After calling the help desk (reaching them took me over 30 minutes), I learned that the warranty had expired a few months ago and to replace the screen, it would cost half of the amount I paid for initially to purchase this laptop.

I will never buy from DELL again. They sell cheap products that breaks down just after the warranty expires.

I've had this for about a month, got it direct from Dell but with same specs and similar price as it's offered here. In this review I'll try to differentiate between comments on the computer itself and issues caused by Windows 8, but since I can't really review a computer without discussing the operating system, win8 inevitably affects the overall rating. A note about the 3 stars: I would probably give windows8 two stars by itself, and this computer running windows7 might have gotten 4 or even 5 stars for the reasons I'll explain below.

The pros: this is a solid everyday computer. Reboots and load times are quick, wireless connection is stable. I've run MS office suite, Matlab, and ArcGIS a fair amount, all with no hitches. Clearly not intended as a gaming PC but it handles Warcraft just fine with the addition of a wireless mouse and the screen looks good for both games and movies from various angles. It's not as cute/sexy as the Dell z-series (or certainly a Mac) but I think it looks pretty good with nice lines and some modern metallic touches and at 6 pounds it's no problem to carry anywhere.

The cons: A fair number mysterious reboots and updates both from Microsoft and Dell despite setting so that it is only supposed to do this at 3am. This is certainly not as bad as the horror of Vista and it seems a bit better recently but was pretty frustrating for the first few weeks. Two, windows 8 is just clearly not really intended to be run on this machine. It's probably best used with a touchscreen and probably least optimal with a touchpad mouse, and the main interface for this machine is...a touchpad mouse. You can read about reasons for this all over the web but basically they want you to use the OS more like a tablet or phone, flipping between different apps and screens. In my experience you really can't use this computer with the touch clicking/gesturing activated without opening new screens every time you move the mouse, so you'll need to switch it off. Easily done but if I have to lose functionality before I can use my computer, you lose a star. Third, this is probably my least favorite keyboard of computers I've used lately. Feels a bit mushy and awkward this is very much personal preference, but if you're picky maybe check it out before you buy.

Overall: quite a capable computer, but really not designed for the OS installed on it. I knew going in that win8 would be a pain and decided to put up with it because I think this is where Operating Systems are headed and I'll have to leave the Desktop someday, but this would be a system running win7.

Skyrim runs like a dream. No glitches, stuttering, or crashes. I don't have anything heavy enough to put any real stress on this power-beast

I love it so far. .. but, I've only had it for 3 days. .. I will update this review as time goes by.

I've had my GT70 for about a month now and haven't had any issues what-so-ever. I tested it's gaming ability on steam before I went overseas and every game from Portal 2, Rage, Civ V ran flawless on the highest settings. Also ran Dead Space 2 with no issues. I use external speakers but the GT70 speakers sounded pretty average. Now this baby is supposed to be running the lastest and greates Nvidia graphics chip and that's what I purchased it for but bluetooth and the USB 3.0 ports are also good perks. Oh one other gripe, when I connect 2 USB 3.0 externals only one shows up, not sure if that's happened to anyone else. All in all pricey but you get what you pay for and I'm happy.

Acer Aspire NX.M34AA.005;ASV3-731-4634 17.3-Inch Laptop

Acer Aspire NX.M34AA.005;ASV3-731-4634 17.3-Inch LaptopI purchased this computer , because I had a windows 8 computer that was confusing to use.

This laptop has a nice keyboard that is quiet, and the keys are smooth. The screen is bright

with a sharp picture. The thing I like most, is the card reader works with xd memory cards. I have

a Fuji Film camera that uses this card. Windows 8 does not work for me. I was happy to find this laptop.

I am going to hold on to it as long as I can.

I purchased my Acer Aspire through Amazon for less than $500 and have no regrets, as it's well designed and even has a 'reader' slot for SD & other cards, to download photos, etc. I chose this Acer with Windows 7 (Premium Home edition) as it's far easier to navigate than Windows 8! I especially like the fact that it has LED backlighting for super sharp resolution. I chose this brand after talking to some computer specialists who believes this is one of the more reliable laptops on the market. So far so good, as I bought it early June. If you have the room, pay a little more than a smaller screen and get the 17.3-inch screen, as it's awesome.

You can buy the same computer with Windows 8 for considerably less. There is a reason why. Microsoft 8 is killing the PC market. I bought an HP laptop with Windows 8 several months ago and it is a horror. I hate the computer. I have researched and Windows 8.1 does not appear to be much better and it is not even available yet. And so I just ordered 2 of these laptops to get Windows 7 while they are still available. It is difficult to find them in stores. My software is not compatible with Windows 8, many files do not work, my scanner did not work, my printer is agonizingly slow. It is a HORROR. Microsoft should recall all of the Windows 8 computers it sold.

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5315 Laptop Computer (Satin Black) / 15.6-inch HD Display Screen / AMD Dua

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5315 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch HD Display Screen / AMD Dual-Core E-300 1.3 GHz Processor / 4GB DDR3 RAM Memory / 320GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW / 6-cell Battery / Webcam / Windows 8We purchased this computer just before Christmas. It has Windows 8 and worked fine the first few weeks. All of a sudden the internet connection began giving us problems. Extremely slow and a yellow triangle over the internet connection icon. When clicked it says "limited" as the status. This problem is intermittent.

Yesterday, January 2nd, I called Toshiba customer service since we bought the machine in November and it is still under warranty. I explained the situation and that I have four other computers using the same internet connection without a problem. Rep named John asks me if she recently downloaded a Windows update. I told him she probably did since she has Windows update on automatic. He said that could be the problem. He puts me on hold to "research the problem," comes back and tells me that he has to transfer me to one of the expert technicians who will assist me but I have to pay for this service. I told him that I won't pay for service on a two month old computer. He claims that he can't help me and only the higher level of tech support can at a fee. I told him I wanted to speak with his manager he claims his manager was busy and on another call but he would have him call me back. It is a day later and still no return call.

Their lower level customer service is not capable of helping so they direct their customers, who are still under warranty, to a pay-for-service rep. INSANE!

We bought two of these laptops. Got them set up a week after purchasing and the one laptop only last 1 week before it would no longer boot. "No bootable device -Please restart system" Hard drive went bad after a week of light use. Toshiba charges $25 for me to ship it back to them AND I may be charged diagnostic costs. Ridiculous! Bad company.

After 3 months the computer had vertical lines all over screen. Called and they said to send it in. After many days waiting I called and the Toshiba representative said that it was not covered. Likely been dropped. It was never dropped!!! They wanted me to pay $325.00 to get it fixed. Could not speak to a diagnostic team member who determined this was customers fault, but spoke to manager to no avail as her only job is to file a complaint. I didn't buy this laptop from Amazon, but I did buy it from a discount retailer that sells returned items from stores like Wal-Mart, Target, etc. I was able to get this for $250. I have been so surprised with this machine, and in a good way! It performs REALLY well considering it is only a 1.3Ghz dual core, although it does have 4GB of RAM, and runs Windows 8 (Core, not Pro). Windows 8 is surprisingly snappy and responsive on this machine. I likey!

One thing that I did do, was buy another stick of PC3-12800 RAM (it's in my reviews) to max out this system with 8GB, which should help with any of the processor's shortcomings.

Anyway, the screen is gorgeous, the keys are nice and big with excellent springback and they have a great feel. My only real complaint (and this may be an issue with the store I bought it from...which is why I didn't take away a star) was that the re-install software was no-where to be found. Why can't I download it from Toshiba's website? I mean it is 2013 and everything is in "the cloud" these days.

If you can find this laptop on a great deal, like I did, then get it. Otherwise, there are more powerful machines for slightly more, that are more worth your money, I think.
