1. There was a rattling noise coming from the DVD Rom when you switch on the machine. I think it is unusual for a brand new Lap top. Is it only with my machine? Any advise?

HP Spectre 14-3210nr 14-Inch Ultrabook (Black/Silver)

I bought spectre 14 3010nr first and it turned out to be very very slow for a $1200 original price computer. I returned it and bought this model for about $100 more thinking that it will be fast enough as it does have better processor and graphics memory. Turns out it is snapping fast for a notebook as well it came with all the necessary softwares with less junk.

Why 3 stars? Because it has a defective screen. I read the reviews of 14-3010nr that there were problems with screen but I thought newer model will have that issue fixed. It works but sometimes the colors go dim and white color turns into light green. I am really disappointed from HP because when you buy a laptop on a premium price, you expect premium performance too. I think all the "premium price" you pay is for the software that it comes with (Adobe premiere elements, lojack 1 year subscription and Norton internet security for 2 years). But I would rather had got a fantastic laptop with none of these software, which I can substitute with ones of my choice.

Here are pros and cons in my POV:

Awesome design>>> I really mean it.

Good processor >>> Don't compare it to desktop i5's or i3's but its good for daily uses

Intel HD 4000 >>>> This is only in pros if you compare it to previous model with graphics 3000; which had lags in playing hd videos.

Sound >>> don't expect to use it for party even though it has beats audio but the volume is very good for a laptop

Cons:

Screen >>> even though it has higher resolution then most of the laptops out there, screen problems are just not acceptable when they are carried from one model to another.

Ram >>> 4 gb is not enough especially when the Ram is also used for graphics purposes. Note: you can upgrade to 8 gb but its a very painful process.

NFC >>> Awesome idea on paper but no practical use. It only add $$ to price.

Camera >>> I am really sick of companies advertising

Wanted a laptop to replace my 3-year old Toshiba Satellite, which slowed down and froze up until it died. Replacement was to be for family use primarily, with basic applications such as word processing, banking, shopping, browsing etc. So far, I have had no complaints.The I3 processor is quick enough for my needs, the system boots up very quickly (about 20 seconds or so a far cry from the Toshiba), and I've had no crashes or freezes so far. Build quality could have been a bit better....this Dell feels....well, delicate. You don't feel like it can take any sort of abuse...which is not a real issue with me because it remains on my dining room table anyway. Dedicated numeric keypad is a definite plus, along with USB 3.0 connectivity, Bluetooth and WIDI. Overall, a competent and capable family laptop,

I bought this laptop from Dell direct a little while ago. I am quite pleased with it. This is my third laptop, the first Dell laptop, although I have bought many Dell desktops over the past 10 years, both for personal use and for the company I worked for. I have never been disappointed with Dell quality and this is no exception thus far. I had an issue because I was promised a complimentary 15 month subscription for McAfee as part of the package, but when I activated McAfee, they only activated it as a trial version for 3 months. Sent an email to Dell support and their response was immediate and effective. McAfee was activated for 15 months in a matter of hours.

I don't understand why people gripe about the keyboard. I have no issues with it. I even had to remove it to bump the memory up to 8GB and everything kept working just fine when I replaced it. The only criticism I have is the fact that the indicator LEDs are on the side of the unit, out of sight of the user. This was a stupid design decision by Dell.

The machine has all the horsepower I need for my work (mostly software development). I don't use it for games my machines work for a living, they are not toys. You cannot reasonably expect better performance at this price. If you want better performance, expect to pay more.

I will buy it again if it ever became necessary.

This laptop was purchased for my child and worked well. After 7 months the hard drive crashed and couldn't be booted. A call to support took awhile after being shuffled around determined that the drive needed to be replaced. A box was to be mailed to send computer back to company. After a week and no box I called again. They told me that no box was sent and they could send a box (after I went through the entire set of problems again) but it would take 4-6 weeks to get the computer back. For $40 I could have someone come out to the house and fix it in 2 days. I bit the bullet and the tech came out and fixed it. He was quick and the computer came back to life after decompressing (2 hours). Of course everything was lost on the computer and we had to start all over loading itunes and every other piece of software. Lost all documents, mail, etc. Do those backups your computer may fail 6 months in and not 3 years in.

BTW my other child has a Dell also (3 years older) and it started getting really hot and shutting down. While the tech was here I mentioned that to him and he suggested we pull the cover off and see if lint was collecting near the fan and heatsink. He was right on pulled a little hairy mouse ball out and the computer works like a charm. Remember to get that compound/paste for the heat-sink if you remove it.

IBM Lenovo : T30 Laptop - Refurbished

I just last weekend bought this product refurbished, but I've already had enough experience with it to know that I'm retiring my old Thinkpad 600e (with profuse thanks, as that other IBM product has rendered yeoman service for the last 3+ years) and making this my main backup computer (if that makes sense I mean that it's the computer I will be using when I'm not in front of my Sempron 2800+-based home-built). About the only real faults I can find with the T30 are that there are no USB 2.0 ports integrated into the machine (you need to buy a PC Card for that, but they're easy to get and fairly cheap and will literally plug-and-play install with Windows XP) and that the factory-install 40GB hard drive is a bit too small and, at 4200 RPM, a bit slow for modern purposes. However, any good modern HD with a capacity of 60GB to 80GB should suffice to upgrade this part. Optical drives and RAM expansion modules for this model are readily available, as are batteries; I've already oomphed up my T30 by boosting the RAM to 1GB, which causes the Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on this machine to run very smoothly indeed, and putting in an 8X DVD+/writer (I am intending to find a lightweight, portable scanner and a USB 2.0 hard drive next). I really like the integrated wireless; for the first time in my computing career (and I'm admittedly rather late coming to this point) I really am experiencing the power of Internet mobility. The notebook is very sturdily and handsomely constructed, if rather utilitarian-looking on the outside compared to some offerings from other companies, and it's the first Thinkpad to offer a touchpad in addition to its famous "eraserhead" pointing device. The power button is well-placed on the keyboard itself rather than on the side as in earlier Thinkpads, which prevents awkward accidents with the machine switching on and draining the battery inadvertently. The various ports are well-arranged. Please note that the floppy drive on this model is a separate expansion unit which must be installed into the UltraBay; it's up to you whether you want to purchase one, since floppies really are pretty much obsolete these days with flash drives getting so cheap. The 14.1" screen is not as big as some other companies' models but delivers clear, crisp pictures. All in all, highly recommended for somebody who needs a high-powered laptop without wanting to pay a premium price for a new machine with the still-teething Windows Vista.

EDIT: After nine months of using this laptop, there are several issues that have come up. None of them is a showstopper, but taken together, they'd probably take the overall rating down by half a star still very good at 4.5 stars, but not quite as overwhelming as I had earlier deemed it.

1) The Thinkpad T30 has a rather notorious problem with its RAM slots, in which the bottom slot often works intermittently or not at all. Depending on how much RAM you need, the impact can range from negligible to major, and is almost always frustrating because it cuts your total amount of RAM by half. In my case, this means that what should be 1 GB of RAM is actually 512 MB RAM not inadequate for Windows XP Pro, by any means, particularly for the business purposes to which the Thinkpad series is usually put but annoying. There are several workarounds for this problem, ranging from the field-expedient of inserting a folded piece of paper over the problem RAM slot (this is said to hold down the DIMM enough to make it contact properly) to outright replacement of the motherboard with a properly working unit.

2) The LCD front bezel is rather flimsy. It cracked at the left front catch back in the late summer, making the unit a bit difficult to open. I haven't had the opportunity to get this fixed yet, but it's actually a fairly simple matter of getting a new front bezel replacement parts are readily available through eBay and other sources.

3) Make sure, as I indicated earlier, that you get a proper USB 2.0 PC Card for this unit, particularly one that has a power adapter. You'll need it to run an external hard drive such as the Seagate FreeAgent Go, which doesn't have an AC adapter of its own.

Still very highly recommended, but do be aware of the potential pitfalls. Also be aware that at this point, warranty has very likely expired on any of this particular model you find, so you'll need to know a local computer shop that has good repair rates if something goes seriously wrong.

I have own them all, using at home and my trucking Biz on the road, My IBM fell out of the cab of my semi, fell a good ten feet, broke a corner of the screen, to my surprise it still worked and for another 6 months til I replaced with another IBM T30. I don't care for the price of the newer computer plus all the trash (pop ups) that comes with them, If you can't buy them at Walmart, You know it's a good laptop

I did install a larger hard drive and it accepted the hardware with no problem. It's no apple but I didn't need one this time. Its doing what it needs to.

I purchased this laptop from Wal-Mart -but had exactly the same issues as rjhouse describes in his review. After a half hour or so of useless troubleshooting with Gateway support, I resolved to return it to the store and get a roughly-equivalent laptop from HP for $20 more.

But before doing so, I used Device Manager to "Update Driver" on the "Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter." which swapped out the Broadcom driver for one supplied by Microsoft. I have not had a problem since -it has been working 100% great, not a single drop, and network performance has been fine.

I kept the laptop and haven't looked back. This laptop is pretty decent for the money. Performs well, good amount of storage, reasonably low price. Knowing what I know now about how to get the networking to work properly, I'd buy one again if I were in the market again.

I won't give it 5 stars though -it's not all roses -there are a few things I find annoying or unsatisfactory:

Audio isn't loud enough

The touchpad button is one long bar that acts as 2 buttons, depending on which end of it you press -but this renders the center of the button unusable and the button is progressively harder to press the closer to the center you get. So you pretty much have to press the very ends of the bar.

The touchpad is offset to the left. I guess this makes sense as it's more like a full-size keyboard since they fit a full numeric pad onto this one -but since it isn't centered with the screen, it takes some getting used to.

No caps-lock/numlock/scroll-lock lights (somewhat resolved using keyboard-leds.com app). But I think many laptops are like this nowadays.

First of all, what happened to the cow boxes....?

This is my first gateway computer and a replacement for a Toshiba satellite that i purchased with no research whatsoever bedsides being inexpensive and having a number keypad.

I know this is a cheap laptop, but it would have been nice to use it for more than three months (light business and very little web use) before it crapped out. Just a few weeks after I bought it, I had to restore it. Then it worked decent for a month or so before I started getting hard drive failure warnings, and now it's kaput. Luckily, they're replacing the hard drive and all I have to pay is shipping, but I shouldn't be sending off this item so soon.

I don't recommend buying this.

UPDATE: I spent twenty-five bucks for shipping with insurance to have the hard drive replaced. The laptop arrived in the mail today, and after spending hours moving my files back to the laptop & reinstalling programs, I'm getting a blue screen telling me the PC ran into a problem and has to restart. I've contacted Gateway support and requested a refund.

Bought this in a store, not from Amazon, but feel obligated to warn others about this laptop. First of all I was really bothered that this didn't come with Microsoft Office or the like, as did the last laptop I bought. I guess that is the way now, making you pay for the additional software...lame. Upon attempting to use the disk drive for the first time it was not properly installed....spent a good chunk of time with tech support, which we were able to fix it, but not off to a good start. Now after only a couple months, the mouse is freezing up all the time; I've had at least one occasion where it wouldn't start without removing the battery and returning it before it would power up. Couple times it's frozen completely and I need to manually shut down. Also, as most people find, Windows 8 is a disaster to navigate, so confusing, impossible to find basic stuff, open two folders at the same time, etc... not a good operating system.

This laptop I would say the best looking dell laptop I have ever seen. Complete metal body and the awesome blacklit keypad makes it look better than a mac. And the config is simply mind blowing who would give this config at low rates. This is a great deal for an extraordinary laptop. The thing that brought me to this system was the FHD screen and GT525M card most of the other systems have only 1600 x 900 screen with integrated cards, and FHD really makes a big difference. Also this has a much better processor than most of the other 15z's that I've seen (i7-2640M compared to i5 series). Overall this is a great deal if you can snag it under 1k.

I have an earlier version of the 15z with an i5 processor and I've never regretted getting it, so when my wife wanted one for her business use, I chose another 15z of course. She absolutely loves!

Harddrive was wiped and fresh windows 7 installed, without all the annoying extra software you get from a original Dell. One improvement, wound to include instructions on how to install all the

factory software and how to register the warrant. But since my previous laptop was a dell I already knew how to do this. For example, the laptop did not come with the web cam software installed. Sony VAIO VPCEH37FX/W 15.5-Inch Laptop (White)

I am writing this review after a short use as there are not much relevant reviews available. In fact this particular model is not even on Sony's official website. I got it through my Company after an epic fail of Acer laptop within a month.

Here the few quick points to add-

1. This laptop is heavy.. seriously, It is not something to carry on roads or starbucks instead it is good for Home/office use.

2. It has extra numbered keyboard. so if you are used to regular keyboard then you might press wrong keys at times..

3.High performance6gb RAM/iCore 5.. I called sony representative and he told me number in the model tells performance. Higher the number..better the performance... so this machine is highest performer in e series for sony as it is 37.

4. Speakers volume is good for entertainment purpose.

I am generally happy with Sony products. Hope this one will last.. i am really scared to see failure of Acer for no reason. I will add more points based on my experience.

This computer is an outstanding value! You can get the same computer from Sony at a similar price, HOWEVER, here you will not spend the additional costs in sales tax, not to mention the FREE shipping (can vary if different seller than Data Vision)! With 6 gigs of memory, over 600 gigs of hard disk space and an i5 processor you won't beat this deal ANYWHERE, at least not in a higher end model laptop like this one. After buying another HP to replace a defunct one and having it arrive with multiple software and hardware issues out of the box (it was returned after three days,) I decided to take another look at the Sony machines. This Vaio caught my eye and, after diligent research, I made the purchase.

I should have bought this machine first.

From a sheer looks point-of-view, it's a beautiful piece of machinery. When you turn it on, the functions and internal workings match that external view.

Without going into useless nuts & bolts, let me just say that I couldn't be happier with this laptop after a week's worth of putting it through as many paces as I could.

I have had this laptop for about a month now and it has worked great for a college student in need of a new computer. I use my laptop constantly and love the fast speed it stays at while I multi-task with 5 or 6 programs running at once with its 6gb of RAM. The keyboard is also extremely easy to type on and the number pad on the right works great for my accounting classes.

The hard shell of the laptop also seems very sturdy which is great because it feels very safe for travel. The design also looks great and many friends have complimented on how sleek it looks.

Overall, the laptop has had no performance issues so far and I am very happy with my purchase. If you are looking for a reasonably priced laptop to use for leisure, I would highly recommend this one. Its fast, easy to operate, and has been very dependable so far.

I purchased this laptop after my Thinkpad from 6 years ago finally gave up the ghost. What I wanted in a laptop was something that was very portable, but didn't compromise any system specifications in making it so. I decided to purchase this laptop after a little bit of thinking, since it has some really solid system specifications. Granted, it's only been a few weeks, but overall I have been quite pleased with the purchase.

Display/Speakers

The 14 inch screen is nice and bright, and has 1366x768 max resolution. For me, this resolution is perfect. Probably what I like the most about the display is the matte finish. Glossy finishes may be snazzy and shiny, for those who are attracted to shiny things, but the matte finish really makes it much easier to see the display in daylight. The speakers are pretty much what you'd expect for laptop speakers.

Keyboard/Trackpad

I have to admit that prior to purchasing this laptop I was wary of the keyboard, since the display unit in the store had a lot of keyboard flex. When I got home, however, I have been pleased to report that the flex on this computer is nearly non-existent. It took me a little bit to become accustomed to the shallow keyboard, since on my last laptop, the keyboard felt like a regular desktop keyboard. Now that I have become accustomed to the shallow profile, I've found that the keyboard is quite good. There are things that can be improved, like backlighting, and including some kind of an indicator on the hardware that you have caps lock on instead of relying on the short-lived on-screen notification. I did have to adjust the settings on the trackpad to address accidental palm touches while typing, but after making the adjustment (the manual details how to get to the necessary screen), I have no real issues. On the subject of the trackpad, it's quite large, and plenty sensitive. The trackpad is programmed by default to respond to gestures similar to what you'd expect for MacBook. While it wasn't directly discussed in the manual how to set the trackpad for scrolling based on edge input on the trackpad, I was able to get to the correct settings menu to enable this feature. The trackpad has two buttons, instead of what you see many times now with laptops where the buttons are a part of the touchpad.

Cooling

This is probably my favorite part of this computer. Historically I have not necessarily been good to my laptops when it comes to cooling. I tend to compute in bed. I suspect that a good portion of my former laptop's issues were actually because I didn't let it properly cool. Regardless, I am quite pleased with this computer's cooling system. It is completely silent. Completely. I can hear it, just barely, if I put the computer right next to my ear. It's that quiet. The cooling system uses vents that are located on the bottom and ejects the heated air into the hinge. Even then, the heated air isn't really all that hot. It's more slightly warm air. I will say that if you use the computer for hours on end, you will notice the keyboard becoming slightly warm, but in terms of warm laptops, this is not a temperature I typically concern myself with. I've been watching the internal temperature too, and I've never seen it go above 68C, most of the time being around 50C, and that's when running some processor-intense programs.

Performance/Ports/bloatware/wireless card

As far as the performance goes This is definitely the best performing machine I've ever owned, probably even the best performing that I've ever used. The SSD in combination with the quad core processor makes this a very enjoyable experience. After getting my computer set up, it took 23 seconds to completely boot up, and 6 seconds to return from sleep. This was before running a boot time optimization setting that Samsung includes with the computer. For the sake of ....ahem... research, I even ran this laptop through a grueling test the Civilization V test. The computer handled the middle-of-the-road graphics settings like a pro. I didn't try the higher-level graphics, but I wouldn't be surprised if it performed well under those circumstances as well. The computer has a smattering of ports, none of which I've had a chance to use yet save the USB ports, but I will surely be happy that they're there when I need them. The same kind of philosophy applies for the DVD drive. While I don't use it every day, I do use it for things like backups, and am happy to have the option. The wireless works flawlessly. I actually get a much better signal reading on the laptop than I do on my other devices, and that's when the devices are directly next to the laptop. I will say that I am a bit disappointed that Samsung chose to include bloatware on this otherwise fabulous machine. Luckily I was able to uninstall them, but it's frustrating nevertheless. Also, one of the big draws to this machine was the large internal hard drive. Never again will I have to be worried about a full hard drive.

Size and Weight/Aesthetics/Price

This is an ultrabook. Make no mistakes. It is thin, lightweight, looks like a real charmer, and costs about what you'd expect for an ultrabook. Actually, comparing to other machines, I'd say that for an ultrabook this is reasonably priced. Yes, it has a 14 inch screen. Yes, it's a little bit thicker than other ultrabooks on the market. Yes, it's a touch heavier than other ultrabooks on the market. But there's a trade-off between the ultimate thin and light machine and an overall robust machine. You get a heavier machine with the larger screen, with the hard drive, with the DVD drive. Would I rather skip those items to get a slightly lighter machine? No. This model is already very portable.

Summary Positive/Negatives

All in all, it's a really good machine. I had to do some configuration work out of the box. Aside from that and overall, some pretty minor complaints, this is a real gem.

After I'd operated with a decent late 2009-vintage gaming laptop for home primary use and a netbook for my commute, and having built a gaming desktop, I found myself wanting to make some changes in how I operate my computers. I'm a systems engineer/administrator and really, really persnickity about my technology needs, and I'd already sampled the Asus Zenbook and Acer Aspire S3 completely unusable if you're a decent typist. The HP Folio 13 seems to garner high reviews, but I have serious distrust of their support and build quality, reviews aside.

In any case, I ordered the Samsung Series 5. This is a good ultrabook if you don't need it to store all the data you'll ever have the SSD is an amazing performer, but it's small after Samsung's recovery partition is set up. If you're an advanced user, you can delete it and probably have the wherewithal to do a barebones Win 7 install from the ground up. But if you're like me and want one travel notebook and don't mind not being able to play hardcore 3D games on it, you could do a lot worse in an ultrabook. 802.11n wireless networking performance over a Verizon FiOS router/modem is quite nice and USB 3.0 improved the performance of my main flash drive.

The keyboard is perfect, and Samsung chose to go with a nicely sized Elan multitouch touchpad instead of the clickpad that other ultrabooks and laptops are using to ape Mac products. I like this layout I never have to worry about resting one thumb on a button and having it impact touchpad use. Two easily-clickable buttons, a well-customizable multitouch touchpad, and a very good keyboard without the quirky sensitivity of the Zenbook means this is probably one of the best typing ultrabooks on the market today. The only drawback: it's not backlit. I'm a good typist so normal use isn't an issue, but it's been a minor fumble to adjust the brightness in the dark.

Appearance: 4 out of 5

Samsung has done a decent job of making a nice, sexy looking laptop. I dock it because the outer materials feel like plastic. I can't tell if it's metal with a plastic veneer, but it is definitely not the smooth black metallic surface of the way more expensive Series 9. However, it's not the chintzy plastic of the Toshiba Z830 or Z835. The surfaces blend well into each other and the front part of the laptop has a curve that lips upward from the bottom part. It had a lot of wow factor when I showed it to my co-workers. Moreover, Samsung proves that it knows people will be using this ultrabook in environments where lights are lit up no glossy screen here! I could clearly see the display with the sun shining behind me on the train. The 1366x768 resolution display is perfectly fine for 720p HD video, and the integrated graphics would probably have issues with real 1080p content anyway.

Portability: 5 out of 5

Okay, this should be the singular standard by which a current 13.3" ultrabook is measured. My Asus T101MT convertible netbook was 2.8lbs to the Series 5's 3.24lbs. The Asus was smaller, leading it to feel denser when it was in my light-load single-strap ergo backpack with my rooted Touchpad, papers, and small load of tech tools. I don't feel the weight difference since the Series 5's weight is well distributed for its size. I can carry it in one hand for a decent amount of time while walking around.

Functionality: 4 out of 5

This is a beastly performer of a laptop, I won't lie. I timed it over three cold boots and it went from no power whatsoever to a usable Windows desktop services and startup applications launched and running on an average of 17.375 seconds. This is phenomenal for any machine; I've only gotten close to that on my homebuilt PC when it was fresh, and that boots off a Kingston SSD. I'm told no direct means to confirm yet that the SSD itself is Samsung components, as is its controller. It loses points, though, for battery life: with wireless on and connected, a hi10p h.264 MKV video playing, 9 Google Chrome tabs open (one of which is Google Docs and the other is a Java IRC session) with the screen at medium brightness, it projects battery life at 100% charge to be 4 hours, 15 minutes. While that's better than my netbook, which had a lower-voltage processor, I was hoping that throttling down to "Silent mode" would increase battery life. Also, it has noticeable heat on the bottom left hand part of the laptop. It's not as bad as it could be, but I wish there was more of a spaced-out means of letting the heat venilate. It felt OK on my leg, though, but sitting on a memory-foam sleeve caused it to heat up noticeably.

Software/bloatware: 3 out of 5

There's a lot of crap on this laptop. If you're Joe Consumer, it's safe for you to uninstall Norton Antivirus and use the free, effective Microsoft Security Essentials. If you're an IT professional, you're going to tear your hair out over how much Samsung-proprietary crap is required to get basic usage out of the laptop. The brightness, volume, and wireless network switches are all function keys that won't just do their job with a driver no, you have to keep a Samsung utility installed. Really frustrating. It's not as bad as HP, though, and probably better than Dell's future ultrabook offering. If you know what you're doing you can extend the life of this ultrabook greatly by removing the junk.

Overall, I can't instantly recommend this ultrabook. I really would have liked to have tried an HP Folio 13 after cleaning off the bloatware, or better yet the Dell XPS 13 coming down the pipe soon. For $1100, though about $200 more than the Folio I think I can rest easy with this ultrabook. I may get the Folio and return whichever falls within the Amazon return period, but this is one hell of a machine that has really launched a missile at the Macbook Air in terms of design, usability, portability, and sexiness.

Also, just an FYI when I stopped playing the video and just typed this review, my battery life jumped to 5 hours 21 minutes with 86% remaining. That's with wireless on and display at medium. This is really on or close to Samsung's approximate 6 hour life span and, to me, way impressive. This is a real keeper of a machine!

Edit: (2/29/12) Added a note about the keyboard not being backlit.

Edit: (6/18/12) The speakers have been giving me constant problems. The right speaker simply stops working and restores itself after indeterminate and different amounts of time five minutes, three or so days, etc. It's covered under the warranty but I don't have a portable enough laptop to use for work. I'm really not happy with this issue and would urge future Series 5 Ultra buyers to beware.

Edit (8/28/12) I make this edit after traumatic experiences with Samsung support. Based on the failures I've encountered I've lost a lot of trust in Samsung as a company and am extremely, EXTREMELY wary about buying any other products.

After the speaker issue above persisted, the trackpad simply failed to recognize any input on August 4th. I work in IT so I was able to do all the basics uninstall/reinstall drivers, test external mice, play around with sensitivity, etc. When I called 1-800-SAMSUNG the rep on the phone at least didn't make me jump through hoops. He set up a repair at a depot, and while it was about 20 miles away, their hours didn't jive with my work schedule. I sent the laptop in for service on August 6th.

On August 16, it came back, but no better for the wear. The sound and trackpad are fine, but whoever put it back together did so with a small divot pushing UP FROM THE INSIDE OF THE PALMREST. As in there was about a 1-cm raised pimple-like protrusion coming upwards. Moreover, the wireless network card was degraded to uselessness I only got two bars when I was three feet from my router with clear line of sight (my wife was two rooms away and had four). I performed the usual troubleshooting, called Samsung back, and got a new ticket to send it back in, and I send it in on 8/17. On 8/20, the Samsung repair tracker shows that the laptop was received and service was again in progress.

Another week passes or so passes. Yesterday (8/28) it comes back. I open it up and push the power button nothing. Okay, maybe it's just fully discharged. I plug it in to AC power and instead of the usual orange charging light, I get a green light. Uh-oh.

Powering it on, it boots normally, but the battery indicator shows "no battery connected" and if I disconnect AC power... off it goes. Since it's an ultrabook, the battery is sealed inside the unit and it isn't the kind of laptop that you can take apart without a service manual which, of course, isn't anywhere to be found online.

I called 1-800-SAMSUNG, gave them my ticket numbers, and requested that they advance-exchange the laptop: send me a new one, I send back the continually defective one. I'm given a transaction number and am sent to Executive Customer Relations. There, I'm told that their policy forbids any action on a defective laptop unless it's evaluated by a Samsung tech... the same techs who made things less useful each time I've sent it in.

They can make no offers of a rental in the meantime, no offer to see what can be done. I ask to speak to a manager, and after a few minutes, none are found and they ask my info for a call back the next day.

At noon the next day, rounding out a month without a laptop, I call back and am told again no supervisor is available. "They may be talking to other people or unable to assist," I'm told. "They're very busy." Not as busy as I've had to be, catching up on work due to lost time since my laptop is, well, not portable or usable anymore after each repair visit. It's out of the timeframe for me to file a chargeback on my credit card and Amazon doesn't have any options to put pressure on Samsung.

I sent my story to Consumerist in hopes that it might get some kind of response. Failing that, my only real option is to start mass-mailing Samsung execs and Cc the media in hopes of prodding them into action. This laptop performed great until it had the gall to require basic repair. Don't even waste the $800 they now charge not worth the hassle.

I bought this laptop for my wife at best buy.

She wanted a thin and light laptop preferably with a dvd drive (although personally I think a dvd drive is not really essential anymore these days)

I looked at a lot of "ultrabooks", including the acer s3, the asus zenbook, and so on.

This Samsung sticks out for 3 reasons:

1. it has a dvd drive

2. its 14 inches instead of 11 or 13,3 inches like most "ultrabooks

3. and most importantly it has a matte screen (more about that later)

While Samsung likes to call this an ultrabook (when you start up the first time, you even get a pop-up with the word Ultrabook and the Intel logo), this laptop does not qualify the Intel standards of an ultrabook. While its light, its heavier then the other ultrabooks (the dvd drive and the 14 inch screen are to blame).

Something what I found very nice is the adapter that comes with the laptop. While they are normally very bulky and heavy, the power adapter is very small (about 1/4 of my Sony Vaio adapter) and light. An extra benefit for when you are carrying this laptop with you.

This laptop comes equipped with a 500gb hard drive and a 16gb ssd from Sandisk for the booting and waking up. This makes that the laptop boots rather fast (20 to 30 seconds) but all other tasks go on normal speed (because of the normal hard drive). The fact that it doesn't have a full pledge ssd drive has it advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side you have more storage (500 gb), on the min side, its less fast.

The biggest plus and the main reason to choose this "ultrabook" is the fact that it has a matte screen. Samsung seems to be the only laptop manufacturer for the moment that understands the need for this kind of laptop to have a non reflective screen. The whole idea of making laptops more portable is so you can bring them everywhere and use whenever and wherever you want. Now you can also do this in daylight. The viewing angles are also very good.

I did have a problem with the Wifi on this model. This is however not Samsung's fault but with the intel wireless card. I had to change a setting in my verizon router (disable the qos) for it to make a stable connection with my network (took me a while to figure this out), but luckily there is google and other people with similar problems :-)

overall this is a very good laptop. the build quality is very nice. Its heavier then other ultrabooks. If you want a lighter more portable one, I suggest you look at the 13,3 inch version of this model (you do loose the dvd drive)

One last thing. On the forum here on Amazon there was some confusion about the graphics. Some press releases by Samsung mention that this model comes equipped with a separate graphics card (also mentioned in the Amazon description), this is however not the case. It has the intel shared graphics. Its more then enough for the daily stuff, but you will not be playing the latest games with this machine (the bottleneck for the Windows rating was the graphics, by the way)

I bought the Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook 14Inch a few weeks after its release. I was extremely excited to use it as soon as I got it. This ultrabook is promising and gives a lot of the things it mentions, but one thing I do not like about this notebook is the heating system. The vent is in the bottom of the laptop, and another one is located in between the speaker, allowing the heat to release above. I was worried that it may overheat, so I bought a cooling pad. My predictions were true. This laptop ONLY overheats when you charge it while in use. I recommend you turn off your laptop when you decide to charge it, because it gets extremely hot. But after you've finished charging, you can take off the plug, and use it normally. The heat stays neutral and you cant feel the hotness anymore.

So, this is the only thing I absolutely HATE about this laptop, is the cooling vent, because it's located in the bottom & becomes hot when you use your laptop as the same time you charge it.

After owning this laptop for approximately 6months, I believe the heating had gotten worse, to the point where it had melted a portion of my video card chip set. A few minutes of using this laptop, the pictures & colors becomes disoriented and I always had to restart it to get its original colors back. There are also times when it fully turns white for a couple of minutes which has got to be the most frustrating thing ever, since I'd have to wait for the screen to load back. These started to happen two weeks ago. It has a one year warranty so I'm getting it checked up, but hopefully it doesn't happen to any of you. I shall provide pictures of it below.

I did a lot of kicking around for a lot of the so-called ultrabooks. I know...some wouldn't consider this an ultrabook, but nevermind that. What I wanted was a lightweight laptop with a good battery life. I chose the Samsung Series 5 Ultra because it offered all of that, and still gave me a decent sized hard drive (I got the version with the 500Gig). Peformance wise, the SSD cache drive really makes a major impact over a traditional hard drive. You won't notice it initially...but after using it for a few days, the system seems to cache out the files I use the most and it really makes an impact on load times for your favorite apps (email, twitter, web browser, Lightroom, etc). Of course at a later date, i can always upgrade the hard drive (confirmed by Samsung) when the SSD drives are more economical and a bit larger. But that's neither here nor there.

I really like the keyboard. Coming from a more traditional laptop keyboard, the island design and the short travel of the keys took some getting used to. But it has a better more tactile feel than I'm used to, and it's really accurate. I type really fast and have no experienced any problems with the keyboard. My only complaint about the keyboard is that I wish I had dedicated page up, page down, home and end buttons (you have to do a key-combination with the 'Fn' button). albeit, there's not a lot of real-estate for such keys...but even so. I also wish the wifi button was mapped to just turn the wifi off/on...instead it pulls up the configuration manager, so that's an extra step.

The track pad is a really good quality track pad. It suppors multi-touch, and so things like zooming and scrolling are very easy (two finger slide down to scroll, pinch to zoom, etc). It's also very large with makes for easy use. However, it does take some getting used to. The upper edge is very close to the keys, and so I find myself lazily resting one of my fingers on the upper-right corner of the pad, which means when I'm trying to move with my other finger, I'm actually pinch-zooming, which is kinda annoying. But that's habitual and nothing necessarily wrong with the laptop. Besides, I shouldn't be resting my hands on the laptop in that way anyhow (bad posture). EDIT: One minor annoyance...if you start typing, or if you are holding a keyboard button, the trackpad locks up. I believe this is by design to prevent palm clicks or redirects, but there doesn't seem to be an option to change this behavior. Fro my needs, it's fine. But when it comes to gaming, this would limit the playability factor.

Let's talk battery life. By default, many of the battery saving settings are not enabled. So the first few days I thought the battery was mediocre...3-4 hours at best, and I was somewhat disappointed (and besides, I admit I never read the manual at the time). Then I discovered all of the battery saving features such as the power profiles (learn these, tweak these and use them) and some of the other tweaks. Now I'm getting 6 hours of battery life consistently. A bonus feature that I appreciate is that you can enable an option that preserves the longevity of the battery. It prevents the charger from charging the battery past 80%. Sure, you lose some battery time o the short term, but such a charging technique has been proven to increase the overall life of the battery. So I enable it, and I recommend that you should too. Side note about the charger it's small, very small. More than half the size of my old laptops "brick". Bonus.

Overall, it's a great laptop and I would recommend it to anyone. It has a few shortcomings for those of you who need a bit more performance, but this laptop (nor any of the ultrabooks) is designed for super high-performance. But I do really push this guy beyond limits. I use Photoshop and Photoshop lightroom regularly, I do play my fair share of games. And I love it.

Windows 8 may be difficult for those accustomed to Windows 7 but to me this is an perfect operating system. The Start screen layout is both stylish and user friendly, I'm learning pretty fast. You can view mail, share pics, and talk to friends with the click of a button. For those who are accustom to windows 7's desktop, you can easily click to the desktop from the start screen and do everything that you normally do. Even though it doesn't have an start button, the start screen is much faster and easier to use.

Overall, this laptop is great, boots up quickly (30 seconds) and I fully recommend it!

I have had this laptop for a little over a year now and still LOVE it. I haven't had any problems with it at all. I love the look of it too. The sound is great. I am very picky about the touch of a keyboard. Some laptop keyboards have very flat keys. This one has a great feel to it. The company I work for only uses Lenovo at all of our properties across the country. My last two computers were HP's and I had nothing but problems with them. I think I will stick with Lenovo.

For the most part, I am satisfied with the laptop. Had to get used to the keyboard, which is different than most other laptops I've used (has the number pad on the right, like a regular PC keyboard). The touch pad is annoying in that the way it is placed, I end up bumping it unintentionally all the time, but that's minor.

The main grievance I have with this laptop is the terrible quality of the speakers. I need headphones to actually be able to HEAR with headphones it is acceptable. Without headphones, the volume is very very muted.

Samsung NP-QX411-W01US Laptop Computer - Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, 6GB DD

So far, this machine has everything I could have asked for in a new laptop (and I even purchased it Refurbished)...

Its performance is extremely fast, it pretty much never even gets warm--let alone overheats. It handles multiple demanding applications at once without a problem (e.g. running Photoshop while watching a movie and browsing Firefox with numerous tabs open...

The built in sound system is much louder and better quality than most other laptops I have heard.

The touchpad (and I hate touchpads) I think is the best I've ever used.

The fan is not only super effective at keeping the CPU cool, but its also the quietest fan I've ever encountered. And I mean absurdly quiet. This is really a stand-out feature of the laptop.

BATTERY LIFE:

I don't know what the other guy who reviewer is talking about--my machine has excellent battery life! Maybe he just happened to get the one in 1000 with a faulty battery. In fact, among the surprisingly useful pre-installed "bloatware" programs that every computer company ships their laptops with, there is a "battery life extender" function which gives you the option to only allow the battery to charge to 80% of its capacity, which actually preserves the life of the battery in the long run--an excellent feature for people like me who will be using A/C power most of the time anyway.

The keyboard is just plain sexy. It looks sexy and it feels sexy. Every key is perfectly spaced, it knows exactly which key my finger is aiming for and the "chiclet" or "island style" design makes the computer look so stylish that even mac users will question their choices.

The screen is absolutely brilliant. It has the perfect balance of brightness and reflection/glare from various lighting situations and the glass stretches smoothly from edge to edge (not resting behind some clunky plastic frame like most other laptops.

MINOR COMPLAINTS:

The model advertises a 14 inch screen size, but while most companies measure screen diagonally from one outside corner of the lid to the other, the 14 inch screen that Samsung advertises is only counting the diagonal measurement of the actual display area. If you include the black framing around the display area and measure diagonally from the outside corners of the lid, then it is actually 16 inches exactly. Fortunately for me, this wasn't a major selling point and its pretty much the same size as my last laptop, so it fits perfectly into my old case.

There is no quick-and-easy on/off switch for the touchpad, so when I plug in my USB mouse, I have to go to the mouse settings and disable the touchpad since I find that it (or any laptop's touchpad) can get in the way of typing.

Also, it'd be nice to find a laptop sporting an onboard 5.1 soundcard. I mean its nearly 2012 for crying out loud. That seems like a reasonable request, but I haven't seen any laptop that can hook up a 5.1 sound system without an external converter.

Anyhow, so far I am extremely happy with my purchase. I did a great deal of research and read/watched every review I could find for this model before finally buying it. It has met all my expectations, save for the minor 14 inch size misunderstanding that is. I highly recommend this product.

I waited and did research for this laptop for 3 months and bought it actually at Best Buy as soon as it came out.

Ive been using this laptop for about half an year now and this is one has been just amazing. I decided to write a review because of the poor rating on this product because of the review below on the defective item apparently. I will tell you why I decided to go for this laptop than any others after doing research for months.

PROS

= GREAT PRICE!!!!!!!! For the specs that is better than macbook pro, its almost the half price! Need to say more? i5 processor. 6GB ram. 750GB storage.

= There are way too many pros but first thing you can notice right away is the GREAT DESIGN. Well spread out and designed island style keyboard. Big None-button mousepad also adds to the design. The surface doesn't leave finger marks. And yes, it looks like macbook pro but who cares it looks great and I am a consumer.

= One of the main reasons why this one stood out more than any other laptops as I was originally going to purchase Asus laptop was because of the MULTI-FINGER GESTURE MOUSEPAD just like the one on macbook pro. It has up to FOUR FINGER GESTURE which is VERY VERY VERY useful. Very Very easy to switch between windows. You have to try it to understand.

= Easy customization access. It is very easy to change volume or change the display brightness on this laptop which I have found them very useful while using this laptop.

= Battery life is great! I usually get one full day of use on battery on low light. Depends on how heavy you use it but I think usually lasts about good 8 hours.

= Super fast. Turns on any heavy program in seconds. Very fast boot time. I am too lazy to explain all.

= Very quiet. The noise on this laptop is non-existent.

= Display. It's samsung. Enough said.

CONS these are not major but the things that would've been nice.

= No backlit keyboard. This is not a problem at all but it definitely would have been nice if had one. but it was not an issue for me upon purchasing and still not a problem.

= CD DRIVE. It's the classic PC CD drive on laptop where it pops out and you have to put the CD. I prefer like the one on macbook where you insert in the CD.

I had $1000 HP Pavilion laptop before this one which lasted me only 3 years. It had problems in every way: horrible battery life, terrible display, overheating, SUPER LOUD NOISE, keyboard, etc..... literally in every way!

I learned my lesson and did a careful research for months and I am more than satisfied with this item. DO NOT write reviews on defective items. It has been half an year and still this laptop is the best laptop out there. Get this laptop and won't regret it.

This is most likely the best laptop I've had to date for the price. I have had all sorts of laptops including the 13in Macbook pro 15in Macbook pro, Asus N53SV, Toshiba satelite, Hp pavillion. This laptop has two things that I wanted for a laptop. Great battery life and decent graphics (Nvidia 525m). The other choice available was the Asus u46 laptop with 8+ battery and 540m graphics. This Samsung laptop however beats it out in a couple of different categories. The screen, keyboard, and audio is better. If only this laptop had a Macbook pro screen (more quality, it is a edge to edge glass screen) and a backlit keyboard then this laptop would easily be the best laptop for under $1000. This laptop easily gets 8+ hours on 80% of battery.

Pros:

Long battery life (8+ on 80%)

Decent graphics (can be overclocked to a 550m)

Decent Screen (Edge to edge glass)

Decent Audio for a laptop

Touchpad (get the synaptics drivers, not at the macbook pro level but one of the best windows touchpads I tried)

750gb hard drive

i5 processor

Price ( I paid $599 at Tigerdirect, compare that to $1200 macbook pro with no dedicated graphics processor)

Never heats up unless your playing games (My macbooks used to become way too hot and that's 2011 model).

Keyboard (nice typing experience but not backlit, a little less quality then macbook pro)

Cons:

No cons just a couple of things that would make it better like macbook pro like screen and backlit keyboard would make this a great laptop. I would have even paid $800 for a laptop like that.

After extensive research i have concluded that this laptop is the best within my range. It offers amazing battery life along with exceptional graphics from the Nvidia Geforce drivers. it allows me to play games on the my laptop that me desktop couldn't even handle. combined with the i5 processor and 750Gb of storage its a lethal competitor to laptops everywhere. good speakers for a simple laptop (headphones are optional)

great battery life( easily 8 hours for simple browsing)

no cons, but if it where to be made better...

put in a backlit keyboard

maybe some bluetooth or blue-ray

This laptop is a BEAST. First of all, for my fellow gamers out there, let me say that this thing has pretty much got you covered. It runs Skyrim on high settings, silky smooth. It runs Magicka fine. It runs pretty much everything. Even The Witcher 2, although on medium. Oh, and you know how Minecraft, simple game as it is, can be picky with which computers it runs well on, regardless of specs? Well it runs AMAZINGLY well on this, even if you're hosting a sever at the same time.

Everything is snappy and fast. HD 720p-1080p video on youtube or playing in VLC is lag-free and gorgeous. You can even have quite a few other things open at the same time, alt-tab to your heart's content, and it's totally fine--no freezes or hiccups.

The touchpad is the biggest I've ever seen on a windows laptop and it feels great, although I rarely use it myself, preferring a wireless mouse. The keyboard feels absolutely AMAZING. I do a lot of writing and this laptop is a joy to type on, provided you have some wrist support (or if you don't rest your wrists on anything like you're "supposed" to do.)

Besides the crap software it comes installed with, as does every PC (screw you Norton!), the only negatives I can think of are that the battery is internal, and thus can't be removed. I've unplugged laptops and taken out the battery before to get them to turn off when they freeze up really bad and holding the power button doesn't do anything, so I can see this causing a really bad day for a few people, but it's not a huge deal, in my opinion.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE1413TCXB 14-Inch Laptop (Sharkskin Black)

I love this laptop. It is so beautiful and works perfectly. It also arrived super fast. I love the brightness of the screen and the light on the keyboard.

I debated spending close to $500 when there are so many laptops in the $400 range, but am glad I did. It was pretty easy to set up and the HDMI port is great for showing the internet on my TV. It is much lighter than my previous laptop. Note to those of you with email that uses a POP server -Windows 8 email app does not support POP servers. But I found Mozilla Thunderbird and it is working out fine. The interface is similar to Microsoft Outlook.
