Dell Inspiron 17R N7110 17.3" Laptop (Intel Core i7-2630QM Quad-Core Processor, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7

Dell Inspiron 17R N7110 17.3' LaptopI have owned this computer for about 2 1/2 years maybe even 3 and have never had one problem with it. It is fast and reliable. Screen is beautiful. I love mine. It is definitely way sturdier than other lap tops I have owned, I don't feel like I am going to snap the screen off when opening it like my last lap top, nothing bad to say... if your looking for an awesome lap top here you go

I bought it one year back and during the warranty period I replaced hard disk, DVD drive, touchpad, keyboard and mother board 3 times. My warranty ended on 15th may and just before that I got issue in web camera. It is still in Dell depo. Dell support is denying support now. It was biggest mistake I purchased this laptop.

Buy Dell Inspiron 17R N7110 17.3" Laptop (Intel Core i7-2630QM Quad-Core Processor, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 Now

I bought the Dell Inspiron to replace an older desktop model. The file transfer utilities for Windows did a pretty good job of handling most of the program transfers although some of the applications had to be reinstalled. Not bad all things considered. What few gripes i had were centered around Windows, not the Dell. The screen is sharp; start-up time is pretty fast; the key board feels good; and disk access is quick. All-in-all, this is a great little computer.

I don't believe American Royalty Sales Amazon Marketplace

ever owned this product (Dell Inspiron 17R) to begin with! Anyways, after a couple of lame excuses I find out he/she hasn't shipped it, so I cancel to no avail, I've been billed the $610 through Amazon, and there seems to be no way of recuperating this charge!

OK with everything BUT: This is supposed to be a Dell top of the

line product. The touch pad is hard to press and has a "tinny"

sound. The key board is of cheap materials. This is not a Mercedes.

It is a Datsun! Will return.

Lenovo ThinkPad W520 427638U 15.6' LED Notebook - Core i7 i7-2720QM 2.2GHzFast, longish battery life, feels very robust, runs quiet, all the ports I need, and useful utility software for hotkeys and so forth.

I wish it had the large, smooth touchpad of my macbook pro, but the fantastic keyboard feel almost makes up for it.

Main downside is the huge power brick needed to run its monster processor. If you get a dock, be sure to get the compatible 170W model.

This laptop is an absolute disaster. It shuts down intermittently during both normal operation and sleep mode.

I have had several Lenovo computers over the years and they have always performed well and this one is no exception. It's fast, battery life is very good, and the screen looks great. The power supply is a brick, but I got a nice backpack for the computer and there is plenty of room for it. I have used 2 of these W520's with no problems at all. Get one with a warranty and you should be fine.

I researched my options for fast reliable workstations long and hard. I work overseas and need a reliable and powerful machine. On paper the W520 seems like the best bet, and I have had great success with Thinkpad's in the past, however this is not the case with the w520.

The first week it performed flawlessly, on day 8 it would not turn on. I had powered it down for the night and in the morning it was just dead. I checked all usual suspects and contacted Lenovo. Came to the conclusion after long troubleshooting session over the phone with someone I could not even understand that the motherboard was most likely fried, and they have had the same issue before. They shipped the return box promptly free of charge with preprinted labels (a+ for effort) after a few weeks in the shop I got the laptop back supposedly fixed with mother board replacement and a few other things. No more than 3 days later the same thing, wouldn't turn on, no bios screen, nothing. called Lenovo again and they tried to say it's just a glitch and had static built up, and it was no big deal, they had my take it apart and disconnect internal battery. still didn't fix the issue. so I go through the whole process again. and Again get the repair order saying yet another motherboard is fried.

So for a laptop that claims superior quality and reliability this has hit as far from the mark as possible! I am now overseas for 4 months using my old laptop b/c there's no way I can trust the w520. In less than a month's time it has completely failed. So now it has become my wife's laptop until it needs to be fixed again at which point I will have to cut my loses and get them to take it back or throw it in the dumpster.

I had a huge love for the IBM Thinkpads, and after this I have no faith in Lenovo

Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop Computer - Classic Black

Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop Computer - Classic BlackPros: Price, enough RAM for day-to-day work, good display with a decent graphics chip for video playback, very little bloatware, good wireless connectivity, runs relatively cool with good battery life, webcam.

Cons: Said graphics chip isn't sufficient for gaming. Likewise, the single-core processor is a tad sluggish for multi-tasking. Not quite as bad as you'd think, but this is obviously not designed as a machine for gaming/zippy multi-media performance.

[ ... ]

[This AMD sits around the middle in performance benchmarks, toward the later half of that range. You can find some laptops in this price range with dual-core processors, albeit some with lower clock speeds combined with a bit less RAM.]

For the money (bought mine on sale at Micro Center for $269), the Inspiron m5030 is a good, sturdy laptop. Download Chrome, AVG and Malwarebytes, and you're good to go. However, keep in mind that this is a budget priced-machine (and I'm rating it as such). You get what you pay for. This Dell will be great for internet surfing with 3 or 4 browser tabs open (one on youtube or Pandora, of course), listening/storing music, watching a movie here and there, word processing and the like. But if you plan on playing graphically-intensive games or video editing while having a bunch of other programs running, look elsewhere. Otherwise, this will easily get you through the day.

My first laptop was a dell and I was happy. My second laptop was a dell ispiron m5030 and I was very unhappy. I never really liked it from the start. Within 18 months the display was all messed up. I will never buy a dell again. The thing really sucked

This has been the worst laptop i have ever had! It has been "repaired" three times by dell. All for problems with the laptop not charging or not recognizing the charger. Dells customer service is by far the worst that I have ever dealt with! The laptop is currently sitting under my desk waiting for me to figure out what to do with it since Dell in their infinite wisdom stated that my laptop would not charge due to "damage" that was not covered by my warranty. They said that the mother board needed to be replaced and i guess they did not want to cover their shotty equipment and wanted me to pay a 300 dollar service fee to have it repaired. I would say that is a bit ridiculous since that is almost the price of the laptop when i bought it. I will never buy another dell product due to their horrible customer service and cheaply made products. I expected a lot more from such a big name company. Buy a Sony Vaio if you are looking for a well made product, I had one before the dell and bought another one after the dell stopped working.

Toshiba Satellite U845-S404 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Sky Silver)

Toshiba Satellite U845-S404 14.0-Inch UltrabookAt first I loved it. 3 whole weeks of computer bliss before the first pixel went. Then a while line of pixels. I called them and they said it was definitely under warranty and to send it to the Toshiba repair center. They told me to back it up when I turned it on to do that the screen looked even worse! It was basically a crappy screen death spiral. After 3 weeks of thinking about it they said it was not under warranty and I would have to pay them $600 to fix it. After 7 hours on the phone with them I called Amazon. The AMAZING people at Amazon took it back!! Toshiba almost cost me the Toshiba refund because even when I asked for them to return it to me broken so that I could return it to Amazon, they lied about when they shipped it, lied about the shipping method. It took 3 weeks to be returned. This was my 3rd Toshiba and probably 10th that I have participated in the purchase of / recommended (parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles)... it was also my LAST. Lessons learned: only buy computers from Amazon; never buy Toshiba.

Do not buy Toshiba. Screen just all of a sudden cracked. Bought from Best Buy and they refused to even look at it because they said Toshiba was the only company that would not accept them sending it. Toshiba wanted to deal directly with the customer. Toshiba won't replace or fix even though it was within warranty. Spent a LOT of time on the phone trying to get them to fix my computer and they said the warranty does not cover a cracked screen no matter what. Horrible computer, even worse customer service.

Purchased from Amazon July 2012. Enjoyed Traveling with computer light weight and good battery life. Miss the numeric key pad and the mouse pad buttons do not work if you are touching the other mouse pad button. Only surprise was the slow ethernet port. 100 speed is ok, but seems like it should be 1000 speed.

Toshiba C855D-S5106 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch Display Screen / AMD E-300 Dual-core 1.3 GHz Proces

Toshiba C855D-S5106 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch Display Screen / AMD E-300 Dual-core 1.3 GHz Processor / 4GB DDR3 RAM Memory / 320GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW / 6-cell Battery / Webcam / Windows 8 / Satin BlackI purchased this laptop just over a month ago. Last week, the plastic veneer to the optical drive caught on my laptop bag and broke off. It's a small (5" x 0.5" x 0.5") piece of plastic with a button on it to open the drive. Maybe a $2 part that I could pop into place, myself. It had been in and out of the laptop bag maybe a dozen times in the month I've owned it. The laptop was not dropped or abused in any way. And of the five small plastic tabs that hold the plastic veneer/cover on to the aluminum drive inside, four of them had broken off.

After about 45 minutes on the phone with Toshiba's in-warranty, out-of-warranty, and supervisory groups, I got no help whatsoever. The best they could offer me was to ship the laptop in for diagnosis and repair. I would have had to have covered shipping, a diagnostic fee, and any repair costs, of course.

It would cost more to ship the laptop to Toshiba than this part costs! Evidently "physical damage" is not covered under Toshiba's warranty. Regardless of the fact that their product is so poorly designed as to fail after only a few instances of being inserted into a protective bag.

You want a laptop to be designed to handle those kinds of things and you want a manufacturer who will stand behind its product when there are problems. This would have been a simple, $2 fix and might have left a customer satisfied. I hope it costs them your business, instead.

I got the laptop for my sons birthday, laptop did not work so I had to send laptop back and still dont have a computer for his birthday.

Very dissappointed!!!!

It works fine for everyday use, emails, surfing, banking etc. It is light because the case is a little flimsy. If you were one to be rough with it, I don't think it would hold up well. The Windows 8 program is very hard for us old dogs to get used to. This is no fault of the computer. I'm sure when you know what your doing everything is great but when you are just an average computer user it is hard to make the changes from the Windows of old. All and all, for the cost, a decent machine.

The RAM is just right with 4gb and a 2.30 gh processor this machine is so fast. Its been working great for me, and is good for traveling. I am a DJ and use my laptop for music and it worked great at my first gig a couple weeks ago. I also use it for my personal use and I like my computers super fast. This is perfect. Also Dell is a great company with excellent support. I would recommend this computer to anyone weather it be for personal or business use. Dell Inspiron 14R 1181MRB 14-Inch Laptop (Mars Black)

Dell Inspiron 14R 1181MRB 14-Inch LaptopI love this computer. Dell did a great job. it is fast and reliable. And even better, it gives you the option to not install all the bloatware that usually comes with new computers.

Excellent laptop, laptop starts up fast, 4GB of ram is plenty for a student in college or home, I3 processor is great for the price, 500 GB hard drive is plenty for anyone, and 5400 RPM keeps the battery life going longer. Laptop did come with unnecessary software, but takes 5 mins to remove. Laptop is gorgeous looking but does attract finger prints. Would recommended to a student or for use at home.

Update: Laptop still is going very strong. Only downside is part of the letter came off on the N key...will replace the keyboard within the next year.

I stalked this particular laptop on dell's website for a few days. Compact, fast, cool. Everything I needed to help myself become a digital dj. Then I found it on amazon for about 80 dollars less? It only took me about 2 seconds to think about it before I hit the "add to cart" button. This thing is fly.

The only thing I can say is that the shift button is a little smaller so sometimes I press the enter button instead, and the track pad is hard to tell from the surrounding area of the rest of the computer..so you think you're all set to scroll the crap out of something and nothing happens..haha. These are just silly things compared to how happy I am.

I have owned several laptops ranging from high end Sony Vaio, to heavily discounted HPs, and I've never had any issue with any of them. Also, beware of Dell's customer service, they are not helpful at all. The product page states that the laptop has a 1 year hardware warranty but they are trying to make me purchase a $100 hardware warranty for a year. This is the second bad experience with Dell's customer service, so I suggest stay away from Dell until they do something about their customer service.

I bought this for my wife. she's not a power user by any means but she loves it. mostly web surfing, email and maybe a little photo editing with photoshop elements 7. she like the small size. i have a 17" dell and prefer the bigger screen. she likes the light portability of the 14". to each their own.

The price on amazon was somewhat better than the dell site and with free shipping and no tax...this was the place to buy.

Lenovo Z570 10249UU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Gunmetal Grey)

Lenovo Z570 10249UU 15.6-Inch LaptopFast laptop for a great price. I love this laptop. It comes with a lot of upgrades from my previous Lenovo. It has a vent cleaning system that keeps your vents clean from lint and dust. It has a feature that can speed up the time it takes the computer to boot up. It currently takes 60 seconds for my computer to completely boot up from the time I turn on the power and it gets a little shorter as the computer learns my habits. The keys are elevated for easier typing verses the flat type of key board that comes with a lot of laptops. I connect with the HDMI port to my TV and watch all of my 1080p movies without a single shutter or glitch. This computer is fast and does everything I want it to do. It has smart settings for preserving the battery life so it knows by the way you use it how to charge the battery for long battery life.

After a lot of research, I ended up purchasing this laptop. After using it for around a month or so now, I can honestly say that I have no regrets. The price was great for what it is, I find that it's actually faster than my desktop. Has decent graphics, and the i7 is great. It runs my design and photography programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom wonderfully and I have yet to have any issue with it. It probably wouldn't do great for gaming, though. But overall it's a sleek little beast. Strongly recommend it. :)

April Update:

The honeymoon is over. Especially when the bride has run off to Lenovo "support" for multiple weeks.

About a month into use the PC just died. No charging, wouldn't start up. Called Lenovo support (after FINALLY finding the correct number) and worked with someone who could barely speak English. After a few minutes of trying to sell me an upgraded warranty, they said that it would need to be sent to Lenovo support, and that they would get a box to us. A week passes, no box. Called support again only to be told that **I** would be responsible for both the packaging AND the shipping.

A week and a half later I got the laptop back. Control sheet on the inside said "Reseat Memory. No parts replace." As someone who works in IT and has built a computer or 2 (or 20) in my lifetime, I found that a little far-fetched. Sure enough, the laptop still wasn't working. Called back and got a new work order number and this time they actually gave me a shipping label!

Long story short... still out... still waiting to get it back.. Overall it's great laptop when it actually works. But -2 stars for godawful support and, apparently, quality control.

I finally upgraded to a new laptop and bought this one without much research. I am pleasantly surprised and the quality and speed. The only concerns I have is I don't get near 5 hours on the battery at the highest battery conservation level. Maybe I am doing something wrong, I usually get 3.5 hours. Also the ports are all over the place, this might be convenient for some but it makes it hard to plug in all the cables when at my desk. I bought a port replicator to solve this. All and all I think its a good laptop.

Purchased this for business use and am extremely pleased with the performance. Besides the speed, I particularly like the bright back-lighting on the screen. My older IBM ThinkPad gave me several years of good service, but it just could no longer keep up with running several apps, while using email and web browsing simultaneously.

Computer arrived on schedule and in perfect condition. No problems at all.

I was skeptical about Windows 7 (previous computer ran XP), but I have been pleasantly surprised with its ease of use while still giving me the control that I want. The ease with which I was able to network all of our computers that also run Windows 7 and are connected to an internet router was amazing. Easiest network I ever set up. Bluetooth connectivity is also nice. Computer immediately connected to my Bluetooth headset (Motorola H710), giving me a nice way to communicate during the webinars on workplace safety that I conduct often and should work nicely on Skype as well.

I like the laptop and it is working well. I don't like the Windows 8! Windows 8 seems to want to make my laptop into a tablet but it can't. Lenovo Ideapad Y560 0646-2EU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Lenovo Ideapad Y560 0646-2EU 15.6-Inch LaptopLet me start off by saying that this is a very fast computer. I7 makes it a blaze and with 4 gigs of ram it holds its on on any advanced program or game. The videocard in it is more than enough to run Modern Warfare 2 at some high settings and it'll run most things without a hitch. It is relatively slim as a desktop replacement laptop. I categorize it as a desktop replacement for a few reasons I'll explain later on. Now, other things that it does well size and weight are great for all of the power that you get. The build is pretty solid, although I could go for a studier base.. it'll give you a little flex if you pick it up from the corner.

Now the cons:

The battery life is very short, but what can you expect while running a quad core and a dedicated graphics card.

Mobility wise you can pack it up and bring it around with you but with very little juice and time on the go you better bring along a power cord. Also, the size makes it so that it'll fit into a backpack but you are going to feel this thing when you are taking it around with you. I came from a 13'' macbook pro that I thought was fantastic for mobility and for battery life but it lacked on the speed realm.

The screen.. come on, this should be at least a 1680x1080 screen. There's no reason for it to be 13XX by 7XX. The screen itself is decent, it's nothing terrible but it is not on par with MBP's screens.

The track pad is a little too grippy for my tastes, and you'll have to drag your finger around with some force to get it going.

The track pad placement is not the best, as I hit it constantly with the bottom of my palm while I am typing on the keyboard. It could be / should be placed a little differently... I didn't have much trouble typing with the MPB again but with this I am getting my cursor pushed around and put into the middle of my sentences causing me to go back and fix them.

Now for the ugly:

This computer Blue screen of deathed on a regular basis and hard locked when doing too much video and audio at the same time. I looked into this is great detail on Lenovo's forums and I have fixed it somewhat. I got rid of the original bloatware installation of Windows 7 and found a regular version to install. After that I updated all of the drivers as best I could, and then I updated the BIOS as well. I sometimes still get some hard locks, although very rarely now. Also, I get the "BIG POINTER" problem that sometimes shows up for other users of this particular laptop. So with that said I had some serious functionality problems getting this laptop to run correctly for me. I had ubuntu on it for a time and it ran without a hitch, but why are we going to be putting ubuntu on a $1000 semi gaming computer? Doesn't add up for me at least.

Would I recommend it?

I think its a great computer when it works. I think if you know what you are getting into you are going to get a deal. I think that if it worked constantly I wouldn't have a reason not to recommend it. If I didn't have the functionality issues with it I'd tell people that the screen is a little weak but it's a hell of a deal with all that horsepower in it. Think of it as a dragster that has weak brakes.. super fast, but not the most functional for day to day driving.

I would not recommend it only because I would have gone with a ThinkPad not an "Ideapad" This is obviously a cheaper and less reliable solution to a ThinkPad and it is more geared towards your gamer crowd than your business crowd. If I could do it again I would go ThinkPad without a second thought. Who needs I7 in a computer that's only going to run an hour hour and a half without a power cable? Get this computer as a desktop replacement that's more affordable and smaller than a $2000 alienware.

If you want mobility and more functionality, go with a ThinkPad or equivalent.

Laptop worked fine for about 11 months. It then started crashing with Blue Screen very frequently. Sent it to Lenovo Support, they pretty much replaced every thing but the screen and keyboard. After a couple of months Laptop fails to start intermittently Display Driver failed to initialize. Spoke with Lenovo support team and I will have to send it back to Lenovo support team.

Every time I call them, they say that they will send it in 24-48 hours and I still did not receive any information. This has been going on for almost 2 months.

I am now stuck with a Laptop which does not work and Extended Warranty which I cannot use.

I would neither recommend this product nor the extended warranty service from Lenovo

This laptop has been sent to the Repair Depot 3 times for "Faulty Motherboards" and each time the interval has grown shorter until upon the third time, the laptop CAME BACK with a cracked side near the power jack. When the computer's harddrive finally gave out, I sent it back and the Lenovo repair team let me know that they could not fix it because it was apparent due to the crack in the side that there was user inflicted damage.

A computer made of terrible parts and terrible service backing it up.

A simple google search will let you know that there are known common hardware issues with this laptop. Works well until it doesn't. Lenovo customer service is unresponsive and have no qualms about asking you to pay for known hardware issues that are not your fault. Also, they will sit on your laptop without any available information for up to 3 weeks without returning your laptop.

Bottom line: you don't want to buy a product that has to go back twice for hardware-related repairs within the first 10 months, especially if they are not use-related.

If customer service was more responsive and known hardware issues were fixed as part of a recall, this really would have been a great machine.

I have owned this laptop for well over a year now and I haven't had the best experience with it, but it has been functional enough for continued use.

We'll start with the good.

PROS:

The speakers on this computer are impressive, really. Being sort of an audiophile and highly critical of most laptop speakers, the JBLs in this model do a fine job and then some. They are relatively loud, very clear, and the intelligent touch-settings allow you to transition smoothly from configuration to configuration for movies, games and music. Additionally, the video output is fairly good which makes this a decent machine overall for entertainment.

The keyboard and touchpad are apt and comfortable. When I was shopping around I found myself in search of something that wasn't going to make me tired of using it after 30 minutes. Trackpads can make me crazy, and this one fit my needs well. Zoom and scrolling work quite well and the keyboard makes it so that you don't have to attack each letter or symbol.

Aesthetic design and portability have been nice. The lid has some neat, platonic graphic work on it and the orange rim around it is a nice touch. It's pretty slim and the edges taper off nicely for comfortable portability.

Now for why I am not very happy...

It is unfortunate that the above aspects are so nice, because the valuable facets of operation on this machine are lacking.

CONS:

We'll start with the biggest physical issue. The screen is floppy. That's right; floppy. When I open the lid it will move back and forth about an inch removed from its true position. It's not entirely unusable as I've found ways to compromise since I am still using it, but it's seriously a nuisance. You will also find yourself mad at how badly this thing smudges. Be prepared to wipe it down with a micro-fiber cloth daily. Over time the lid's contact with the rest of the computer when closed will also incur scratches on the screen and the casing that are irremovable and annoying if you like your computer to look nice. The rubber pads to keep this from happening don't really work and eventually fall out.

Operation is pretty unfortunate. The sound card goes in an out, as if it's picky about what it likes to play. Sometimes I have to close programs that use sound and reopen them for it to recognize the output. Strange, but pretty much a problem since the first month that I've had it. This machine also gets pretty damn hot. Sometimes it's almost unbearable to have it on your lap and I hardly do things to truly stress the system, unless you count iTunes, Office, Skype and a web browser. Don't bother with much gaming as it will lag and struggles often with loading and rendering of graphics. Don't even think about running video editing programs that are heavy on resources like Vegas as your projects will crash. Additionally, be prepared to encounter BSODs. Finally, a huge problem is that startup is SLOOOOWWWW. This can be resolved by removing bloatware, but only to an extent. You should probably configure this thing yourself with a fresh install of Windows if you want optimal startup in addition to fixing a number of other problems.

Battery life is terrible. When I use the computer in classes that are an hour and fifteen minutes, I am prepared for it to be nearly dead by the end. Additionally, the battery will sometimes cut out of recognition and your system will require a restart and battery removal to solve the problem.

I have had other problems with the computer that would require more detailed description, but here's the final staggering gunshot to the foot for this product. I had to order twice before I received a functioning model, and still all of the problems above have existed with this one. The first one that I ordered had a screen problem, something I suspect to be due to a problem with the assembly. If you don't want to deal with some hassle, don't trust this model.

OVERALL: This problems with this machine are numerous, and there are some great features, as well. Unfortunately, the bad overwhelms the good and I will never purchase from Lenovo again. It's sad to say, considering the great number of positive things I heard about the company, but this experience has ruined their reputation, for me. Perhaps there are some other very dependable models that they have made, but I wouldn't count on this one ever again.

SONY VAIO VPCS111FM/S 13.3" LCD, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, i5 PROCESSOR, WINDOWS 7

SONY VAIO VPCS111FM/S 13.3' LCD, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, i5 PROCESSOR, WINDOWS 7I'm a web developer/designer and consider myself fairly computer savvy. I have built several computers from the ground up and was surprised when I found exactly what I wanted at Best Buy.

I have been researching laptop computers for the past 4 months and consider the Sony Vaio VPCS111FM/S to be the best option for the price.

Pros: Intel Core i5 2.26 GHZ, 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of RAM, 13.3" screen, 5 hour battery life, chiclet backlit keyboard, Blu Ray player, Video Card has 256 MB dedicated RAM, 2 year warranty

Cons: Price($1050.00), hard drive is only 5400 rpm and Out of date Bios that caused a minor audio problem

I was looking for a powerful portable computer that didn't cost a fortune. I found cheaper laptops that had the same specs but they were all 15" or larger which was a deal breaker for me. Also, most of these models came with a battery that only lasted 2-3 hours, which was also a deal breaker (the Vaio standard battery last just under 5 hours).

I think the reason this has received some bad reviews is because the installed bios and drivers are out of date resulting in a few minor bugs, most notably unexpected audio drop outs or a buzzing metallic sounds while listening to audio. The Vaio Update software that comes installed won't update the bios automatically you have to download the latest version from Sony's website and install it manually. This is very easy to do and after the bios is updated everything works perfect.

I have installed Gimp, XAMPP, FL Studio, Inkscape, Netbeans and iTunes and so far they all run better then expected. I also tried out the wireless display feature with the NETGEAR Push2TV Adapter that was included in the price. I watched some Netflix movies and it worked great.

I have only owned this machine for 3 days and so far I love it and am extremely happy with my purchase. If you are looking for a highly portable powerful computer for around $1,000 then this is the machine for you. I don't think you will find a 13" model with all the same features for the price.

Sony's Vaio VPC-S111FM/S does a good job of balancing weight and performance. I've used mostly Think pads and Dells for the last 15 years, so this was my first Sony purchase. Ultimately, I decided to not keep the laptop and returned it to Best Buy.

Strengths:

The keyboard is very good, but it had quality issues.

Keyboard back-lighting

Performance, 4GB RAM and a fast processor made this laptop nearly comparable to my desktop i7 Winx64 system.

Low noise. The fan and hard drive are very quiet.

Low heat. Never did the bottom of the laptop feel hot.

Competitive battery life. I averaged 3-4 hours per charge.

Low weight. This is one of the fastest laptops for the price and weight available today.

Wireless N performance was excellent and reliable.

Weaknesses:

Although the LED back-lit LCD has nice contrast, the screen is too reflective for my taste, and much more so than most Dell models that I've used over the years.

The keyboard is generally very good, but some keys (specifically the shift key for me) clicks and sticks. My keyboard may have been defective so this could be rare occurrence.

The Intel Wireless Display does not work well, and when it does, the video quality on our 47" HD LCD TV was that of an older DVD (video playback was also choppy on the remote TV). Additionally, nowhere are end-users told to configure the wireless connection to operate over the 2.4GHz band. If the default "mixed mode" or 5.2GHz is selected in the connection, the Intel Wireless Display won't function.

The battery didn't fit snug, so it rattled when you moved or handled the laptop.

The 5,400 RPM HDD is noticeably slower compared to 7,200 RPM systems. If I were to keep this laptop, I'd probably upgrade to a faster and larger HDD.

If the laptop's strengths listed above are important to you, and you can overlook the troublesome "Intel Wireless Display" and potential keyboard issues, then this laptop is worth consideration.

Buy SONY VAIO VPCS111FM/S 13.3" LCD, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, i5 PROCESSOR, WINDOWS 7 Now

I have been using this new VAIO for the last few weeks and it is very well built. I read a bunch of reviews and message boards to see what I was getting and have not been disappointed. I bought this to compliment a desktop computer I recently purchased with an i7 processor and the i5 in the Sony is no slouch. It handles everything very well and gives me about 4-5 hours of battery life with a few tweaks to the screen brightness (and turning off the CD burner when on battery power).

I was a bit concerned about the keyboard layout since I have never used a "chicklet" style keyboard, but I think I type better on it than I do on most other keyboards, it feels so natural. The screen is very bright but just a touch reflective in certain light, but then nearly every laptop today is the same way. I think the only compliant I have is that I couldn't get it in black, but the silver finish actually looks pretty good.

I've had no issues with my computer whatsoever, wifi is blazing fast, bluetooth is seamless, card readers are automatic, etc. Some have mentioned issues with sound, that can be resolved with a driver update from Sony, and mine updated automatically on the first update so I never experienced the issue. All in all, I paid as much for this as I did for my desktop, but it was worth every penny...I might just give this one to my wife and get a black one once that is released. This is my first VAIO, but definitely not my last...VAIO's for everyone in my house from now on.

Oh and the wireless streaming of audio/video to the TV is pretty nice also. I compared it against the quality of the HDMI out port on the laptop and it was very close (tested using streaming video, there may be differences streaming other videos, haven't tested). The only downside of the wireless streaming to the TV is that the cursor lags on the TV so when you move the cursor, you have to wait a second before you see it move on the TV screen, but I mainly use it to watch streaming MLB games on the 52" screen and it has been flawless.

So I rate this 5 stars since it has lived up to my expectations in exceeded them in some cases. Like I said, this is my first VAIO, but it won't be my last, this laptop made me a fan.

I'm giving this laptop five stars because after using it for a week, I have yet to find something to criticize. I paid $1049 at BestBuy, and they included in the deal the box for wirless streaming to your TV, which works well. One of the things that made this laptop stand out for me among all the choices in the store was the keyboard. Very comfortable to use, reminded me of the MacBook keyboards. The laptop is light, the screen colors seem great, and the computer itself looks pretty good and doesn't feel cheap. I do think that the speakers are a bit weak and tinny, but I was not expecting anything more than this. So, in summary, I got what I paid for-a powerful, well rounded, lightweight laptop.

Want SONY VAIO VPCS111FM/S 13.3" LCD, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, i5 PROCESSOR, WINDOWS 7 Discount?

Bought this laptop a little over one year ago. My older PCG-Z1WA (purchased in 2004) was showing it's age. Since I travel overseas 6 months each year, I'm a bit tough on laptops.

I liked the weight, looks and quality plus it's a Sony!! The only thing that I don't like is that I'm unable (so far) to get Solaris 10 running properly. Once that happens, this will be a 5 star laptop. Right now, it's a 4.8. Oh, and I could use a powered eSATA port, but other than that, this laptop is complete.

Having a laptop that is capable of 8GB memory and comes with a 500GB hard drive is great. The graphics capability is excellent, the auto-dim sensor and back lit keyboard is great when you're on a red-eye and having to do work. You won't disturb your neighbor (too much).

I'd buy this again, but the way Sony's have lasted for me, who knows what innovation they'll have in six years. I'm looking forward to their next generation. Maybe they'll have 500GB SSD as standard!

Samsung - Touch-Screen Ultrabook 13.3" Laptop - 4GB Memory 500GB HDD + 24GB ExpressCache - Silver -

Samsung - Touch-Screen Ultrabook 13.3' Laptop - 4GB Memory 500GB HDD + 24GB ExpressCache - Silver -Model #NP540U3C-A01UBI stumbled upon the bad reviews left for this laptop and felt the need to share my experience. I converted from mac, since macbook airs were exceeding my budget. I cannot do windows, so I installed the next best thing to macos: ubuntu linux. A review I saw online suggested installing linux on the build-in SSD drive, which is used for windows fast boot otherwise. It works like a charm. My laptop now boots super fast and stays super fast. It loads firefox in 4 sec (initial load, not from cache) under Ubuntu. Oh, I also did not have to load any drivers for Linux, everything just works.

All of the components of this laptop function flawlessly. The problems reported by other reviewers, such as spotty wireless, slowness, etc must be due to windows 8. It is not fair to blame this laptop for those. I also kept windows 8 and playing with it from time to time, and have not seen any problems there as well.

I like the keyboard and trackpad the most. They are very comfortable to use.

For this price, this laptop is highly recommended.

I usually think most negative reviews are due to defective items or people not using the product correctly. In this case, the negative reviews couldn't be more accurate and I have little to add, other than my low rating.

This machine has the most spotty wifi I've ever seen, it will connect to a network, then after you close the lid, putting it to sleep, it won't connect to the same exact network it was just on when you wake it up 5 minutes later (and I'm talking even giving it a full 5 minutes to wake up)! I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers about 50 times, as it's the only way to get it to reconnect.

For a Core i5 with "ExpressChache" it boots up, and runs programs, slower than my wife's basic Core i3 HP Pavilion laptop that was half the price and has more USB 3 ports and an optical drive....

The customer service is awful. I never complain about tech support in other countries, as I personally feels it gives customers the benefit of 24/7 tech support, but when you can't understand a word the technician is saying and they can't understand you, it's kind of a problem. I'm used to them forcing you to try steps you've already tried before but when they don't even understand what you are saying when you try to explain what you've already done... Ugh.

Also, and I'm not sure if this was mentioned in previous reviews, the Samsung specific apps that come installed with the machine don't work properly. The "SW Update" (to update drivers and Bios and programs) won't let you hide updates you don't want, like it keeps telling me I need to reinstall the Norton Suite it came with despite my having another antivirus installed, and half the driver updates fail. There's even an update for the wireless card but it fails every time, even when I'm hard-wire connected by Ethernet! The "S Service" app (which is supposed to allow Samsung techs to connect remotely to your PC through the internet) starts up, says "there is an update to this program", downloads the update, starts back up, says "there is an update to this program", downloads it, restarts... You get it, over and over again. I let it do this for 5 hours hoping it just had a lot of information to download but it was still going!

Now my biggest irk. I called customer care about the wireless issue, which I've seen reported everywhere EXCEPT on the Samsung Support Webpages, and after a while I was told to send the Ultrabook back to Samsung. They paid for shipping but I was responsible for packaging the Ultrabook, where as most other companies will send you a box to make sure the machine is protected in transit, and told if the software needs to be re-installed, they will charge me $40 even when it's under warranty!!!

My advice, if you have the money to waste on something that won't work correctly right from the start, waste it on something else.

I purchased the Samsung NP540U3C-A01UB in December 2012, along with a very similar Sony SVT13126CXS Windows 8 touchscreen ultrabook. I first applied all available software updates from the vendor and from Microsoft, and then connected them wirelessly to an elevated ASUS RT-AC66U router and installed the Intel Anti-Theft technology software (see my review at Amazon if interested). For the purposes of this review I will compare the Samsung to the Sony, since these machines are quite different from the Windows 7 PCs that I have in the same environment.

Regarding the utility of Windows 8 and touchscreens, using this system feels like a cross between using a Windows computer and a smartphone. Using the touchscreen lets you do some fun things with multi-touch gestures, but the price to be paid is that content creators (i.e. users of Desktop legacy software) have to do a few extra keystrokes or touches to start their tasks. Since all new Windows laptops ship with Windows 8, I thought it best to pay a little extra and get a touchscreen ultrabook. Certainly the light weight and 6 hour battery life are a big improvement over my Dell E6510 laptop. However the Dell achieves twice the wireless throughput (90 Mbit/second at 45 foot range through 4 walls) of either the Samsung or the Sony.

The Samsung is about 0.3 inches narrower and shallower than the Sony, and looks smaller, due to its rounded outer edges. It has been criticized for its sharp inside edge, although I haven't found that to be a problem. Both systems fit in a Case Logic 13 inch ultrabook case. The Samsung's Windows 8 Experience Index Score (top to bottom) is 6.9/5.9/4.7/6.2/5.9. Compared to the Sony, the weak points of the Samsung are: (1) Wireless adapter sometimes drops the connection (at locations where other computers can stream video with no problems), (2) Samsung software (e.g. the substitute for the Windows 7 Start Menu) and touchpad driver sometimes stops working or glitches, and is fairly annoying and confusing in that the software update application keeps prompting you to install software you may not want or need, (3) The Windows 8 Experience Index memory score is only 5.9, vs. 7.3 on the Sony, and the same-priced Sony ships with 6GB instead of 4GB RAM, and (4) The AC power connector is very small and could be accidentally damaged.

It is possible that the Samsung may have longer battery life than the Sony, because its memory runs slower and its fan runs less often. The Samsung also has more comprehensive advanced processor power management settings than the Sony does (e.g. a System cooling policy).

The bottom line for me is that I like the Sony better, but if Samsung improves their software and the memory issues prove not to be a problem, then the NP540U3C-A01UB deserves consideration if minimum size, sleek design, and longest battery life are paramount for you.

Want Samsung - Touch-Screen Ultrabook 13.3" Laptop - 4GB Memory 500GB HDD + 24GB ExpressCache - Silver - Discount?

I purchased this laptop about 3 weeks ago and exchanged it today for a Macbook Air.

1st complaint: Windows 8

Windows 8 is not user friendly or easy to get used to.... did not enjoy having to go online to look up how to do simple things. The app tiles are obnoxious and not handy. Windows 7 was functional....Windows 8 took about 50 steps in the wrong direction. :/

2nd complaint: Slowwwww

So slowwww, slow to switch between apps, slow to open apps, slow in general.

3rd complaint: Fan noise

On the days Skype would open and I was talking to a friend, he asked me if someone was mowing the lawn D: and this was just the fan noise going directly into the built-in microphone.

4th complaint: Picture files

Pictures save to multiple locations, not all to the same one. I am used to Macs where everything just makes sense intuitively....this did not make sense. Every camera app ends up having it's own file of photos. :/

These are the reasons I had to return. Did work very well for Netflix, enjoyed the screen clarity and great audio. Touch screen was responsive but I found it to be gimmicky and not actually that useful. Maybe fun for kids (playing games) but for that purpose, why not just get a tablet or iPad?

ASUS U33JC-A1 13.3-Inch Laptop (Bamboo)

ASUS U33JC-A1 13.3-Inch LaptopFirst off, the bamboo finish is fantastic. I love how it feels and looks. The newer i3 processor in it is comparable to most i5 processor out now, so it is fast. The laptop actually comes overclocked, so it is faster than stock intel. With the Super Hybrid Engine, you can actually underclock it a bit, extending the battery life. Even with it off, I can easily manage a single charge per day (battery life can easily do 9+ hours for office work). The switchable graphics is seemless. I have only noticed it switch on for Photoshop and Youtube flash videos when you need it. The laptop is also almost dead silent. I have yet to hear the fans, so it has good vents. USB 3.0 is also fast (I have a portable USB 3.0 drive). I also upgraded the 500GB to a SSD for extra speed. The only real con I find with this laptop is the screen. Wish it was matted or a better display. So far, I am loving my purchase.

It's difficult to list all the great features of this laptop within a short review. Plus, I won't go through all the specs because you can read all that stuff in the description.

At first glance the beauty of this little gem is apparent. With the bamboo it's one of the best looking laptops I have ever seen. Of course, what is more important is how it performs.

Pros:

Screen size is just right for my uses.

Screen brightness is more than sufficient. I keep it turned down to about 80 percent.

Speed is not the best, but does get the job done.

The 3 USB ports, including a 3.0, is great. Many smaller laptops only have 2 ports.

The light weight is far better than most others, especially those with larger screens.

Battery life was one of the main reasons I bought this laptop. It gets me through the entire day.

The lack of an optical drive is not a problem. I just bought an external one, but rarely use it.

Cons:

The keyboard is the only thing that I haven't been able to get use to. The feel and resistance is not like any other laptop I currently own or have owned in the past. I find myself hitting the keys harder for some reason.

The keyboard is really only a minor complaint and doesn't detract from all the other great features of this laptop.

If you want a good looking laptop, with a medium screen size, all the speed you need, light weight, and long battery life, then this is the laptop for you.

Buy ASUS U33JC-A1 13.3-Inch Laptop (Bamboo) Now

Great laptop except for glossy screen. I bought this laptop based on

-13.3 in screen size,

-no optical drive(didn't want movable parts that break and/or use more power).

-usb 3.0 port

-hdmi port

-removable battery

-removable hard drive

-intel core i3

-under a $1000

I couldn't find another laptop on the market with these specs. If only asus had included a matte screen instead of the glossy one it would be about perfect (An oled screen would make it perfect but obviously more expensive) After I received it I replace the hard drive with a crucial 128gb ssd. The laptop is now very fast with no moving parts and battery life that lasts at least 6 hours (haven't been away from power for longer than that). Also I really like the fact it has a back panel that is easily removable which made changing the hard drive incredibly easy and/or adding more ram unlike what I've read about the new asus u36. Again other laptops I've owned aren't always as easy to remove panels in order to change out parts. The bamboo is nice, its only on the cover and palm rest it has plastic bottom, I'd prefer aluminum top and bottom (didn't want an Apple), but hey for under $1000 what do you expect.

The usb 3.0 only works with the software in the operating system (windows 7) not in the BIOS during startup. The hdmi is great for plugging into my HDTV only had to go into the windows 7 control panel to change the sound out to the TV instead of computer. Asus did include some bloatware, which I removed when I swapped out hard drive. Over all a great computer. Hopefully if Asus people are reading this they will included a matte OLED touchscreen in the next iteration of their laptops when I'm looking to buy another one. Thanks Asus. No I don't work for Asus just an average user that's owned this computer for several months.

Pros:

Beautiful computer, great hardware for a great price. Above average battery life. true 4.5 lbs w/ battery. Keyboard reminds me of a macbook 13".

Cons:

I received my first unit from Amazon with a broken screen out of the box. Have had my second unit for two weeks & the screen broke when I picked up the unit. Logically, I suspect it is a problem with the bamboo not providing enough support to the screen.

Want ASUS U33JC-A1 13.3-Inch Laptop (Bamboo) Discount?

I like this computer but the screen is close to unusable. This is a glossy screen just like my old one (Sony VAIO vgn-sz110) but it is more reflective which is bad because the room is lit so I have to increase the brightness which ups the eyestrain.

Not the biggest problem but what is a big problem is the viewing angle. I'd estimate it to be about 0 degrees vertical and 15 degrees horizontal. Although the horizontal is still clear it is darker when you go outside that range. The vertical on the other hand is useless if you don't have in angled just right. Its a little better with the lights out but since it doesn't have a backlit keyboard, and not everyone wants to sit in the dark) I don't think that is good enough.

Besides the screen I really do like the computer. The keys are nice and spaced. The reason I bought this computer was it was the first 13" laptop with USB 3. The fact that it looks so nice is a bonus. The bamboo looks even better in person.

The battery is another plus. I haven't tested it but it is a lot longer than you would expect with a $1000 computer or any laptop for that matter. The speakers are decent. Overall the computer runs pretty smoothly.

I would have given it a 5 if it wasn't for the screen. It is really bad and I expect more from ASUS. I've built computers with ASUS motherboards and I have an ASUS netbook so I know they make good products. The screen on the ASUS netbook isn't that great either (still, by far better than this one) but I assumed it was because it was trying to maintain the $300 price point. Also, because of the netbook I knew I would be okay without a disc drive but that could be a consideration for others.
