HP G62-340us 15.6-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Charcoal)

HP G62-340us 15.6-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 4 Hours of Battery LifeI'm really pleased with the purchase of this laptop. One thing to realize is that it's not the fastest or thinnest/lightest laptop out there. It's pretty much a standard laptop, with modest specs, but it does all many of the functions that a basic computer user out there is looking for.

Pros:

Nice keyboard chicklet style, easy to type on

Touchpad response is smooth and easy to use (note: see con on touchpad below)

Good screen clarity

Speedy enough for most tasks (internet, word processing)

Wireless connection was strong, fast

Fan is quiet and unobtrusive

Doesn't get very hot when on your lap

Cons:

Case design very basic (rubberized?) and not all that attractive

Touchpad button is stiff Hard to push

Too much HP software installed Some of this will appeal to the novice user who may like all the toolbars, picture managers, dvd players, and software update programs installed.

At first it seemed as if the screen was a bit blurry, but then I realized it was the opening HP setup window that looked bad. It's not designed for the optimal screen resolution of the LCD panel. I don't know why HP doesn't fix this, as it's the 2nd time that I've noticed this on HP laptops. The screen looks nice in Windows 7.

I'll try and update this review a bit more once I have more time with the laptop, including battery life.

Overall, a nice machine in this price range. You can find similar specs across the board with the different manufactures of laptops, but this would be a quality choice.

You need to understand where I'm coming from my most recent computer was running a Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. That being said this computer is a significant step up, and I think it's great. I think it's also important to know what I'm using this computer for....I work in a hospital and use this to log on to the hospital system, use Microsoft Office, and surf the internet. For these applications this computer is perfect. I've had it for about 1 month and have had no issues. It does come loaded with a bunch of HP software which can be uninstalled so that's not a problem.

The battery is listed as 4 hrs...it probably doesn't last that long I haven't officially timed the battery life but it's probably closer to 3 hrs. The case is plastic, the cold startup time is fast

Apple MacBook Air 13.3 inch Laptop 2008 MB003LL/A

Apple MacBook Air 13.3 inch Laptop 2008 MB003LL/AI bought my Macbook Air MB003LL/A used from ebay. Ive always been a fan of apple, having an iphone and ipad and decided to leave windows behind a try a macbook. Buying a 5 year old laptop can definitely be a gamble. Once i received the laptop i automatically feel in love with the design and extreme lightweight feeling. Once i started using it i can tell a noticeable difference with the speed of this used 5 year old macbook and my 2 year old windows laptop. The macbook is so much faster. I use to think maybe my internet connection was just slow but no, windows was slow. I am completely amazed at the quality. I can see why people pay so much money for a macbook, it will definitely last longer than any other computer out there. I am happy with my purchase. bye bye windows!!

lenovo G555 087325U NoteBook AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M320(2.1GHz) 15.6" 3GB Memory DDR2 800 160GB H

lenovo G555 087325U NoteBook AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M320(2.1GHz) 15.6' 3GB Memory DDR2 800 160GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW ATI Radeon HD 4200I was in the market for a 12.6 netbook and started looking at what else was out there for small laptops... then I came across this. I have a custom built 3.7 ghz (oc'ed) pc that I could not bring with me and this more than satisfies my needs. This is the perfect laptop for anyone that wants a powerful computer without spending outrageous amounts of money. I've owned if for only one day and I'm very impressed so far.

Positives:

Dual core processor.

HD Video Card (handled a 1080p file I have with no issues or lag!)

Beautiful screen

3gb of memory

Spacious keyboard, with number pad

Non-glossy cover so no fingerprint or smearing.

Camera is sharp for only .3 MP

Free 60 day trial of MS Office 2007

Face recognition feature for sign in

DirectX 10

16:9 Display

Windows 7 premium bundled

Wireless network works perfectly

USB ports on both sides laptop

Quick and easy setup

Negatives:

As expected bloatware and bundled programs

No gloss or shine cosmetically. A little gloss would have been nice somewhere.

Screen does not lock when closed

Battery charge icon does not change when charged

No HDMI out

After looking around for about a week, this was easily the best deal for a laptop under $500. The only thing I wish it had was an HDMI output. The negatives do not take away from the laptop as I was able to remove all the unnecessary programs in under and hour. The hinge for the screen has the perfect amount of resistance that it wont go flying open on you when it is closed, so the lack of a lock is nothing to worry about it. I am very satisfied with my purchase and no complaints thus far.

First my cons:

1) Lower quality WiFi transceiver it seems

2) Impossible to type with jumping cursor until I disabled the touchpad

3) I could shave in the shiny reflective screen

4) The battery drains faster than the advertising

5) I'll add the bloatware myself thanks if I think I need it

1) I experienced some dropped connections that now apppear to be isolated to the extranet WiFi at work though both my Lenovo T60 and an Asus eeePC 901 I keep at work have never dropped a WiFi connection. The G555 did so repeatedly not keeping the connection for more than a few mins at times. I would have to disconnect and connect to regain my connection. At home the WiFi did not get dropped across the house but the performance was half to my Asus eeePC 1000H that I keep at home. So sitting next to the router the G555 could achieve only a 75Mb/s connection compared to 150Mb/s for my 1000H. Across the house the G555 drops down to 32Mb/s less than half again of the 1000H. I attribute this to seeing for the first time a Broadcom transceiver vs Atheros or Ralink. I noticed on the Lenovo support website for the G555 that the lastest drivers are from Atheros. Does this mean that Lenovo has done a WiFi switcheroo in production and I'm just one of the unfortunates not to receive version 2 of the G555. Why are the latest two drivers from Atheros?

I fixed 2) by buying a mouse and disabling the touchpad, I've never had to disable a touchpad on many a laptop before. There is no sensitivity setting for the touchpad available.

3) The screen is very reflective making it harder to see in a bright room or with a window behind me. I thought reflective screens like this disappeared a decade ago, how much could it possibly cost today to add a non-reflective screen.

4) The battery is advertised as 4 hours but I got low power warnings after 2.5hrs on Windows 7 Power Balanced setting. This of course was a little expected due to higher performance CPU and GPU than my ASUS machines.

5) Finally as mentioned in many reviews there is a silly amount of bloatware installed, I removed 90% of it. The software installs are located on the D: drive.

Other than the above the rest is pretty good for the price. It feels pretty solid, its fast. The screen is nice and bright (if only they had made it non-reflective). The camera seems to work fine, all the basic features are there that I enjoy on my ASUS eeePC machines. My mum will be happy (she did not know a mouse could be used with a laptop). Hopefully Lenovo can fix a few of those issues I mention for future owners.

I bought this Lenovo laptop to replace a Toshiba that I gave away. It sits on my breakfast table and is used like a desktop PC for reading news, trading stock, watching video...etc. I have owned it for about 8 months and I like it a lot.

Things that I like:

1)The screen is big and bright, which is a positive if you use it as a PC replacement.

2)It has a dual core CPU good enough for web browsing and video watching.

3)Battery lasts 3 to 4 hours.

4)Integrated SD card reader.

Things that I don't like:

1)No bluetooth. Not really a problem. You can get a USB bluetooth "plug" in less than $5 on ebay.

2)It uses the old DDR2 memory. If you plan to upgrade its memory you better do it now; DDR2 is being replaced by DDR3.

3)All external connectors, such as USB port, are either on the left, right or front of the laptop which occupy more real estate on my breakfast table. I prefer them on the rear.

4)The normal placement of the Ctrl button on the keypad is now occupied by a Fn button. This screw my copy-paste operation a lot.

5)The Home and End keys, which I use a lot during typing, require "Fn" key being pressed down.

6)This is no easy way to automatically disable touch pad when a USB mouse is used.

Update 02/22/2012

After one year of usage, the laptop develop a weird problem that it won't boot if the laptop is warm. This means if I want to reboot my laptop, I need to shut it down, wait for 30 minutes before it will boot up again. Too bad that my warranty is past when this starting to happen.

Well I would first like to say I've had this laptop for about a month and its been a perfect Gem handles 1080P MKV Media files better than expected.

Like everyone else I had issues with the touch pad being in the way so I just bought a wireless mouse and use that instead and disables the touch pad.

Pros:

Nice big and beautiful screen

Good Processing Power

Nice keypad and number pad placement

Light weight

Portable

Durable

Cons

Battery life could be better

Speakers could be better!!

HDD space is a little low

Touch pad Placement

I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a nice affordable, durable, portable and user friendly laptop!!

Excellent product! Good value for the money! I've had mine for 4 months and couldn't be happier. It's lightweight and the screen has much less glare than my Sony Vaio (and weighs a lot less too!).

HP Compaq nx6125

HP Compaq nx6125I purchased this reconditioned HP Compaq nx6125 laptop for my daughter as a Christmas present. It arrived and my husband plugged it in and checked it out. Everything seemed to be working so it was put back in the box and wrapped. On Christmas day, my daughter opened it and plugged it in. Again, everything was working. She plugged the battery in for several hours and it did not hold a charge so she plugged it back in and left it all night and part of Sunday. Again she tried to use the computer with the battery but it only showed 1 bar. I sent an e-mail through Amazon to the seller on Sunday, December 26. As of today, Tuesday, December 28 I have not heard anything from them. I am hoping the seller stands behind his product and replaces the defective battery, because it was never able to be used. This computer works well when it is plugged in but she has not been able to test it with the battery.

If the company stands behind their product and it is straightened out I will update my post. Otherwise, I would not purchase from this seller again.

Sony VAIO E11 Series SVE11125CXB 11.6-Inch LaptopGreat laptop, I read some reviews online and on here about it citing a less than desirable processor speed. But really when it comes down to it, with three or four programs running its still pretty fast. Its great for a student, papers and projects are a breeze, with multiple chrome browsers open and even my DJ mixing software.

This laptop isn't too big and is a good size for my son. It is a nice laptop. Be aware that it doesn't come with a cd\dvd drive.

Received this as a holiday gift, surprised it's preloaded for 64 bits Windows 8 core instead of Windows 7 that would be excellent for as shipped combo of 4GB DD3 memory, 750GB HDD (5,400 RPM drive is "slow") and used its automated recovery to reformat/restore C: drive / active partition just to be sure it's working. Surprised that Sony support already has downgrade directions and Windows 7 drivers for this newly released model as I believe many seasoned users will eventually downgrade. PLEASE make sure you save/keep the recovery partition and backup your Windows 8 license as it does NOT come with a MS Sticker so that you can re-install it later on. I hate the Metro interface on a non-touch screen and the touchpad is not very responsive so a mouse for scrolling is a must except when seated on a bus or economy airplane seat go to cnet and download a free W8 "Start" menu to bring back that familiar startup, I opted to bypass & deactivate Metro so it's functioning like my other mix of Win7 desktops & laptop devices, fast & bootup/wake-from-sleep mode is fast, less than 40 seconds vs. 2 minutes for older Windows OS. The Apps are cute and designed to emulate iOS and Android widgets, preloaded games are fun but I plan to delete them to free up extra space, plan to use mostly 32 bits "programs" like MS Office 2010 instead of the Apps version. Video resolution is good enough for HD viewing on its 11.6" screen on the go with its 4+ hours playback time, enough for a transcon/coast-to-coast flight to watch my own preloaded DVD's or movies. The absence of DVD/CD drive isn't a big deal, owning 2 Dell's with optional drives for past 5 years and I haven't missed them on the go, most programs and apps/installations can be easilyy done via USB thumb drive.

Placement of usb 2.0 ports on both sides of laptop is a bit unusual in getting used to, plus a single USB 3.0 port that can be used to charge mobile devices even when the Sony is off helping to reduce # of travelers that I must bring along on a road trip. Keypad spacing is a bit tight for my big hands but for light typing duties, this fine with the addition of a compact travel (USB) mouse. Bluetooth works great to connect to the "Big Blue" wireless speaker for deeper bass and enriched quality sound. Wireless N and ethernet port are easy to configure and DHCP were gained effortlessly. Aside from standard VGA output, HDMI output with higher resolution is excellent as I easily hookup streaming video w. sound via average HDMI cable to a big 40" HDTV via its Function key.

Ordering an extra bank of 4GB DD3 memory for under $30, a bargain investment, and it should help the AMD dual core CPU and GPU to optimize. Internal webcam & camera works great for Skype and Google Talk/Chat which would enhance productivity in staying in touch, and, as a great comliment to my smartphone & Nexus 7 WiFi device while traveling. Size-wise, it's small and practically disappeared into most laptop & backpack easily and would "hide" deep in a traditional Coach Metro Briefcase like a small/thin binder.

The Viao will go quickly to a sleep mode, beware that battery will continue to drain slowly in standby/reserve mode, so the charge will be reduced after a week or so and need to have the charger handy.

Overall speaking, this isn't a heavy duty business notebook but for causal users on the go, travelers and others willing to settle for a sharp but smaller screen with a lighter shoulder weight, everything plus extra accessories will fit into a small laptop/messenger bag, that will easily qualify as a personal item when traveling, with extra room for tablet & smartphone and other essentials flying coach class on a budget and this should be considered.

The laptop is cute and compact but i gotta say that it takes some getting used to. i like the Windows 8 feature, even though i'm used to Vista coming from the Sony Vaio E11 series. What made me give this computer 4 stars is that it operates a little slower than i'd expected. not mindnumbingly so, by any means, but slightly slower than my 2008 vaio. i feel that sometimes it experiences some questionable lag time, particularly concerning web browsing. it's minor and it's not like that all the time, but enough for me to notice. Also occassionally i'll have issues with the mouse freezing up, to which i fix by pressing the power button. but it's annoying when it happens, though infrequent.

I love the layout though. it's easy to navigate even though you have to get used to the "touchtoney" feel in that it's easy to switch screens when you don't intend to pan. a light touch is best.

it's smooth and sleek and easy to carry anywhere. i really like the computer, and would purchase from sony again. :D

Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop

Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch LaptopOur daughter needed a new laptop for college. We gave her a budget. She selected this one. It worked great for the entire first semester except for a couple of glitches caused by some third party software she installed.

We got the 2-year service plan with the computer and Lenovo was great about answering all of our daughter's questions.

They resolved the issue in one call, although it took twenty minutes to do it.

( I told her, "twenty minutes is not bad," but when you're a teenager who is missing crucial gossip, it seems an eternity!)

Our beloved daughter types faster than a raging robot, and so, is very hard on keyboards. Sure enough, at the end of the school year while she was visiting home, her keyboard developed a broken key.

"This cheap thing is ^$%%# &&$5 (*#&^$6) "

(She was in the middle of an important discussion with some of her friends about some other friends when it died. From my den downstairs I could hear her hammering away above me (in her room) with the frenetic passion of a Jack Kerouac.)

Two keys had been pressed so hard that they collapsed and wedged in place, rendering all other keys useless as they sent repeating !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! messages. That day I learned that all teenagers believe you can make your point LOUDER if you type harder.

Well, one quick call from momma, and Lenovo sent her a NEW KEYBOARD. They were very helpful both over the phone and by referring us to their excellent repair videos. Momma, (who is NOT particularly good with tools) got the old board out and the new one in in less than a half-hour!

She was so impressed with this service that she bought another Lenovo exactly like the kid's. The difference is that Mamma doesn't BANG on her keyboard when typing emotional messages. Result? We have had both of these working perfectly for over a year and a half now. For any computer that runs Microsoft, I consider that a victory.

SO, the machine is well-designed, works like it is supposed to and does not break if it is not abused. If it does break, Lenovo has resources to make fixing it faster and easier. It may not be "emotional teenage girl YELLING ON FACE BOOK proof" ...but it is darn close.

If you are an adult, (or behave like one) you will probably have no such problems. If you snap a gasket some night whilst typing furiously, Lenovo will come through for you under warranty, no shipping charges for parts.

That's better than any other PC company I've dealt with.

Hope that helps!

The laptop came from Amazon within a couple of days and was nicely packaged. The initial setup for the Lenovo was also nice. That is where nice ended.

The laptop shipped with a malware/spyware package called Nitro. Nitro blocked the Windows 8 updates. There were some Lenovo instructions that said to update Nitro but that crashed too. If you buy this laptop, the answer is easy: UNINSTALL NITRO immediately. It is some buggy emulation software that you will never need. You will also need to disable Nitro's spyware cousin, Nalpeiron. The instructions to do this are on the Lenovo Community Forum for Windows 8. Normally this would have caused me to rate it 1 Star but unfortunately all the laptop makers are taking payola to put spyware on your computer. You will probably have similar experiences with any other Windows machine.

Also, Windows 8 is a major change. Don't buy this for the non-computer savvy person in your family. Buy a Windows 7 PC for them while you still can. And remember, Windows 8 is built into the BIOS and you cannot downgrade even with a complete disk format.

And buy from Amazon because they will stick up for you in these sorry deals. Their hardware, Kindle, just works.

Pros: price, keyboard, power management, screen clarity.

Cons: wifi takes a couple of minutes to start from cold boot; no issues after that.

I've been scouring the internet for a new computer after mine was stolen. I looked at the new breed of instant on, 14 inch display units. But why sacrifice screen space? Real work requires a sizable screen and a 15 inch is my minimum. I tried a 12 inch that I borrowed but that is simply too small.

I had an older g580 variant that I picked up for 500 dollars two years ago. Loud fan, not so great power management. Great keyboard. This is an evolutionary product. The fan noise is gone; at least not as I use it. Power users may find it otherwise.

The keyboard is different, but just as nice as the newer high-end lenovo laptops. Its the best keyboard currently available. So if you are planning to do serious typing, as I do, then this is a major plus. One note on the keyboard/touchpad. The touchpad is the latest variety that is multitouch and very large. It makes typing more difficult. You learn to reposition your hands and most of the time it is a non-issue. To make things easier, I went in and changed the multitouch settings, turning over the perimeter of the touchpad, where you are most likely to have an issue. Works well with that tweak. Others just use a mouse and turn it off altogether. Either way, this is the size of touchpad that's here to stay, so we just have to deal with it.

How is the screen? Those that crave a high resolution will need to cough up more cash for a different model. But let's be practical: you simply do not need it. I've watched netflix movies on here, and its as crisp as an HDTV to my untrained eye, overall excellent.

As for the battery life, that is why I elected to wait for a third generation I3 chip. The improvements are notable. I can get up to 3 hrs with routine use, better than the 90 min of my old laptop, though I haven't timed it precisely. While a far cry from some of the newer models, you pay more for those, so figure out how many hours unplugged you really need.

What about the sound? It has dolby stereo and plenty of power. Great for netflix.

So what's not to like? My only nit is that the wifi takes a while to find the router. Occasionally I have to run the troubleshooter to reset the adapter, a pretty simple task. But once the wifi is running, its fine. You can watch a film front to back without a glitch.

Overall, I think this is the best bang for the buck in a 15 inch laptop, especially if you can find it on sale.

This is going to be a perfect gift for Mom and Dad (baby boomers) and their first PC windows 8 is a nice touch and will be our third Lenovo laptop very solid performers and very little in the way of hardware issues. Nice bright screens and fantastic touch on the keyboards. Nice addition with the USB 3.0 ports. All in the all for the price and with an Intel i3 3rd gen a really nice package for the price $429 on 11/22/12. We own a G780 also and highly recommend it as well.

Update of original review -

After owning this machine for less than 2 weeks I began to have software problems, specifically with the Windows Updater. The machine would hang while updating any software that used the Updater. I called the Lenovo Helpdesk and was told to reload the Windows partition, which I didn't want to do since I would have to reload hours of installs and updates to Norton, MSoffice, Itunes etc. I was transferred to advanced software support where the tech told me he would help but at a cost of $59.00. "WHAT!" I said, "the machine is only 10 days old". "Too bad" he said. "Goodbye" I said and returned the machine to Office Depot taking advantage of their 14 day return policy, and traded it for a Toshiba. In retrospect I would have given the machine 0 stars and I will never buy a Lenovo product again.

Original review =

This is a nice machine for the price. Lenovo makes several G580 models with different configurations. This one has the Core i3 3110M processor which is pretty fast. I was a little disappointed that this model didn't have Bluetooth but I can live without it.

So far the only redeeming feature I can find about Windows 8 is that it boots fast. Other than that the menus, screens, and features are different from other versions of Windows and take some time to get used to. They've removed the Start button from the Desktop view. The most aggravating thing I found so far is that the Windows Mail tool in Windows 8 doesn't support POP3 servers used by a lot of ISPs. You have to sign up for a Windows mail account to find this out. If you have a POP3 server for your incoming mail delete the Windows 8 Mail and download Windows Live from Microsoft's website or some other tool.

I saw complaints about the sensitivity of the touch pad but it's adjustable and can probably be set to most users preferences. The default settings are set to very sensitive touches and pressures.

I like the feel of the keyboard but I'm a 2 finger typist so YMMV.

The Nitro program mentioned as Spyware in some reviews is, according to Google, a third party PDF viewer. I installed Norton 360 and didn't get any bad reports on it but I uninstalled it since I use the standard Adobe Reader for that stuff. I also saw a complaint about the Chrome window size not being adjustable but it sizes fine on my machine. Things like using the Ctrl +/to magnify work too.

Wireless connectivity is good. The machine has a Broadcom 802.11n adapter and it connected with my Linksys router with no problems. It also recognized my Canon Mg5320 printer on the network and configured it without having to run any setup programs so I guess that's also a plus for Windows 8.

The display is bright and crisp enough for me to be happy.

All in all I think it's a good machine for the price.

Sony VAIO VPC-EA44FX/WI 14-Inch Laptop (White)

Sony VAIO VPC-EA44FX/WI 14-Inch LaptopI always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

I got a great deal on this computer through Amazon and it is by far the best computer I have owned. Given that I've had a Dell and HP, this VAIO was a huge step up from both. The processor is insanely fast. I just got done watching live TV while downloading songs at the same time and this laptop had no problems. Highly recommended!

I got this laptop a while ago because it seemed to be a good fit for all the specs, plus it was pretty sharp IMO. It was great for a little while, everything was fast and worked perfectly. After a while it started getting a bit slower and now it makes this awful sound. kind of a grinding, clicking sound. I am not sure if this is the fan or the hard drive, or if it can be even be fixed. So based on my experience with this computer I would recommend you to keep looking and find something better. I know for a fact that there are better computers for cheaper prices. Don't waste your money.
