HP Compaq 4415S, Athlon Dual M520 Cpu, 14.0 HD Panel, 320GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-rw

This laptop is almost perfect except for two things. The speakers are weak, but if you do a couple tweaks then it isn't all that bad. Also, the battery life is really low. I would say about 3 hours on full blast. Hopefully they come out with a better battery, or mine could just be defective. I might send it back, but I'm in no rush since I carry my charger around with me anyway.

Bought this for less than 300 bucks at Target. Very basic, but gets the job done. I've been using it for two weeks and have not had any problems at all. Nice bright screen, fast, easy. Windows 8 is taking some getting used to, but other than that it's been flawless.

I'd seen on some other site people making fun of the 2.2GHz Intel Pentium B960 processor, but come on. If you need the computer for web surfing, email, or homework you don't need more than that. Plus I've watched downloaded movies on it and Netflix instant and it looks great!

It amazes me that you can get such a solid laptop for such a low price. And the bottom never seems to get hot like other laptops I've had. I'm just very impressed and happy with my purchase. You won't be sorry if you get this, and your bank account won't either.

like the other reviewer, bought this on sale the week it was $260 at the bullseye store. bought the white asus 14" laptop at best buy for $250 on black friday, but returned the following week when I saw this on sale. the asus got some good reviews, but i couldn't resist the gateway's 15.6" screen and 500 gb hdd(about 450 of which is usable). but the biggest difference was this came with an optical drive(don't make fun, i'm old-school). i have to have that "bonus" built-in dvd/cd player.

amazon does a good job with the product description but I will just reiterate some things anyway: windows 8 os, 4gb ddr3 memory, 500 gb hdd, sd card reader, web-cam, dvd-super multi dl drive, 3 usb ports, plus 1 ethernet/vga/& hdmi port. mostly standard stuff with the 'price to what you're getting' ratio being the stand-out feature.

at $260 it's a no-brainer. at the regular/suggested price at $360-400, you might want to shop around or consider the speakers. they are borderline terrible imo, low and weak sounding near the max setting. you will need headphones/external speakers of some sort(these are cheap anywhere so no big deal really).

as far as windows 8 is concerned, still trying to get used to and familiar with it. but all reviews that say it's better with a touchscreen or optimized for touchscreens are not exaggerating. having said that, I was doing fine with the track pad and clicks and I never felt the need to touch the screen to do anything. if you're familiar with tablets and apps you should be fine though cause it's all very app-focused. the live tiles are colorful and kinda cool and make me want to leave the laptop on 24/7(but that's crazy talk). there is a tile to take you to desktop mode if you prefer, and quite a few ways to take you back to the start screen.

last thing I will say is I thought it was strange I had to download windows movie-maker from the windows store and windows media player only opens up if you click on windows photo gallery. if you try to put in a dvd or cd it will default to the gateway media player app(which isn't bad, but I need the familiarity of windows media player for now). anyway, i'm not a techie and this is my first ever windows 8 or gateway product for that matter so i'm sure I got something wrong, but those are just some first-impressions. like I said, at 260 go for it. at 360-400 might as well do some comparison shopping for what's best for you. i'm glad I bought it though.

The laptop came on time and everything was in the box that was expected and so far it works great. Only minus I can think is that it's a little bigger and bulkier than I had expected. Otherwise it's a great laptop, I'm really just using it for online access but it definitely exceeds those needs.

I chose this rating due to the fact that every time I get on the computer it shows that I have a full internet connection, but then when I go to the internet, I get a message that I have no internet connection. I then have to troubleshoot every time and for some reason windows never can find a solution. I eventually get the connection, but this is ridiculous. My old computer with Windows 7 has a lot of purchased programs recently and I cannot transfer my backup to Windows 8. They want me to purchase everything over again even my Adobe Photoshop!! There are some serious issues here and will be returning this product and going back to Windows 7. I think Windows 8 was actually made for a touch screen.

I bought this computer and it was supposed to be a brand new computer, however, when I got it it already had an administrators name on it. I called Gateway and they told me it was not a new computer and that it was purchased from goooooooooood price on 11/14/2012 and I did not purchase this computer until 1/3/2013, therefore they sold me a USED computer for the price of a new one. I filed a complaint with the company and with amazon and NOTHING WAS DONE because i didn't file the complaint within 30 days, however, I didn't find out the computer was used until after 30 days. Note: My company gave me this laptop for work purposes. I've used it for over a month now. I didn't pay for it, so don't know what the cost of this laptop is elsewhere on the internet or in stores.

Build: Looks like a good sturdy laptop for office use. Durability wise, no problems so far.

It does feel heavy for it's size though. It is ugly because it's a "business class" product and not a home or a media class product. The screen size is thicker than other laptops that you get today.

Configuration & Performance: Mine came with a Core 2 Duo, and 4 GB ram. Shipped with Windows 7 professional. So far it has handled whatever I've thrown at it quite well. I've tried a couple of videos on it, the speakers are alright. I've used it for running Visual Studio (2010) and Eclipse (Helios) and it's handled both really well. The boot up time feels a little high for the configuration, but it's not too bad.

Noise: The fans are extremely silent and not just on power save mode. I haven't heard a peep out of this laptop so far. I'm really weird about the noise factor and I have to say so far this laptop has fared well in that department. The hard drive is dead silent (as it should be!).

Keyboard & Pointer devices: The keyboard just sucks. The keys are way too soft so you don't get the feel of pressing them. Yet, they make that typing sound. Just weird. The touch-pad isn't responsive enough even after a lot of tweaking with the dell software. Neither is the pointer in between the keyboard. In fact the pointer is so weird, it registers a left click when you accidentally touch it while typing. That's really annoying when you're trying to get work done! Overall, the keyboard, the touch-pad, the pointer seem very cheap and flimsy. The behavior is erratic and I don't think it's a software issue.

Display: The brightness is fine. The "auto-brightness" is nonsense. The laptop has a light sensor which adjusts the brightness level depending on ambient light. It just doesn't work. As much as someone's shadow standing over your shoulder messes it up to a huge extent. At times there is no change in light and it still flickers. I've just turned it off. The max-brightness is bright enough for work in direct sunlight. Overall, the display is ok. Nothing to brag about, but nothing really big to complaint about either.

Adapter etc: The power brick is nice and thin and the cord has a power indicator on the tip that connects to the laptop. The problem is it stays on even when not connected to the laptop, but I guess they designed it that way so you'd know. The LEDs on the laptop aren't very bright. BUT, I find the HDD light rather annoying. It keeps flickering way too much indicating heavy disk activity even when it's just idling. This indicator shouldn't even be there IMHO. It's pointless.

One thing I like is the ability to stop the battery from charging so you can leave the laptop constantly plugged in when you want without worrying that it'll reduce the overall battery life.

Conclusion: Ok, if you want something to work with occasionally. It's not very comfortable to carry around. You might want to get a mouse and keyboard to use with this thing. I'd say this laptop is worth 500$ given what I've seen so far.

Our school purchased a Latitude laptop for every teacher in our school this year. They are very useful if you are looking for a paper weight or need to flatten out student paintings from art class. Otherwise, they are useless. All of them crash at least once a day, and I mean with the ominous blue screen featuring the ominous fatal error message. Several crash in lieu of a screen saver-students come in for a class, you teach for an hour and return to the computer to complete you work and, Voila!, the lover blue screened fatal error message. This has happened this morning six times already and it is only 10:26 am. I recommend you spend your money elsewhere, Perhaps in decorative paper weights with the blue bird of happiness instead of this lap top with the blue screen of despair.

I was given this laptop by the school and I want to say that this laptop is absolutely horrible for its intended purposes.

It is flimsy and cheap. The back light is a constant issue and it heats up at the drop of a pin.

The fan spits out plastic after too long of a usage.

Requires constant restarts due to "internal issues"

The keys fall off.

The whole thing is loosely screwed together, leaving the screws to loosen and fall out.

It crashes and or freezes with light knocks (i. e. putting my books on my desk when the computer is out)

I am currently using this laptop to write this review but I would prefer anything over this... thing. In other words, this product is a no go. Get yourself the HP Pavilion dm4-3170se 14-Inch Laptop (Black) or the Lenovo 14" Core i5 500GB HDD 4GB DDR3 Ultrabook. They are cheaper for the value and more funtional. Summary: Don't. Buy.

The computer was in pretty rough condition when recieved. Cracks in the case but so far it is working well. Battery does not seem to hold a charge but keeping it pluged in is working for me at this time.

when i bought this computer it looked wonderful because i knew what i was buying, this dell latitude was made for professional and educational work, when i began using this laptop i erased the windows vista it had and put a fresh copy of windows 7 professional. this computer has been by far the best laptop i've ever owned, i have always purchased from dell and dell never lets me down because i knew what i want. i work as a real pc tech and i know what im in for.the laptop contains 2 wwan slots, capability for cellular data, extra wifi cards, gps, you name it. VIZIO CT15-A5 15.6-Inch Thin + Light Ultrabook

I was considering purchasing the Vizio laptop CT15-A5 only as choice #2...the Samsung Series 9, similar to that of the Vizio except for the 8GB RAM memory, was my primary focus. However, taking into consideration Vizio's specifications, its price, and Amazon's association, I decided to proceed with the Vizio acquisition.

The shipping/delivery packaging, both by Amazon and Vizio, was excellent, neat, tidy, safe, and simple. The laptop's stunningly unique appearance, [lightweight, slim] and durability cannot be denied. The manufacturer's future considerations and modifications must continue regarding opening the laptop with one hand, currently it can only be done with practice and patience. But this should not be a dealer breaker.

I cannot say enough about the boot ramp-up time, absolutely phenomenal with a threshold of 3-7 seconds. Additionally, Out of the box you will have approximately 200GB of free space. Let's not forget that Vizio has a MS signature allowing for no bloating software, I applaud this initiative.

Historically, from my own personal research, there has been significant negative reviews pertaining to Vizio's `track pads'. Not so with Vizio Windows 8, all functions are readily available, easily accessible, two finger scroll [up, down], zoom [in, out], double touch throughout, [right, left] click, etc. This is by far one of the best track pads I've ever used.

I compared the screen with the Samsung series 9 which is owned by a friend, the S9 is superior, especially while viewing in daylight. Saying this does not mean the screen is bad, I watched several movies and the screen did not disappoint me at all, it was adequate.

The battery charger's cable houses enough length extending its usage to outlets immediately out of reach. It also provides visual indicators such as `yellow', `green' notification during the charging process. Depending upon usage, battery life is approximately 3 hours on MS Signature Power Plan.

WIFI reception has not been an issue, it has actually been outstanding. Proximity during usage in my home, which is relatively spacious, far surpasses that of the Samsung 9.

I have yet to max-out speaker volume...Vizio has provided more than adequate sound during my recent movie viewing.

Amazingly, Vizio's heat venting and dispersemant system is incredible, I have not experienced any unnecessary grills during operation and the fan's performance is barely audible.

In conclusion, as its name implies, Vizio is visually impressive...it looks cool, feels cool, runs cool, and most importantly my fingers are happy dancing around its keyboard. On that note, Vizio, Visual that is, back-lit keys should have been implemented improving its night usage.

Congrats to VIZIO for getting the the windows 8 ultrabook right. This is the cheapest ultrabook of all core i7 that has a 256GB SSD. Start up is truely instant.. something around 1-2 secs. The design make it so slim that you don't mind carry it everywhere. It beats my old hp. The screen is great to watch movies, do work, read email. I love the multi-touch trackpad, especially with windows 8 gestures.

My only recommendation to Vizio is to offer a upgradable storage option. I would have enjoyed a 500gb one.

I want to add that if you update the synaptic touchpad driver to the latest (go to Synaptics website), you can enable 3 and 4 finger windows 8 gestures built specifically just for this large touchpad. It is really awesome!

I previously owned a 15" Macbook pro i5 (about 2 years old) and moved to this vizio. I've been using the vizio for about a week and can comment on most important aspects of it in comparison to my old mac.

Pros

Designfeels great. Fantastic build qualityeasily on par with my mac. very light too! The chassis feels very solid with very minimal flex. I think I remember reading vizio is using some unibody-type construction like the macbooks do.

ScreenFantastic. I got so sick of the glossy screen on my mac so the matte screen on the vizio is a very welcome change. The resolution is fantastic and viewing angles seen to be better than most laptops.

SpeedI am doing mostly document editing, lots of web browsing and some video watching. Most computers are plenty adequate for this and the vizio is definitely overkill here. The SSD is incredibly fast (both in real world use and benchmarks). One of the best thing about this computer to me though is that it is so fast and does NOT get hot. My macbook would literally burn me if I played a flash video or anything slightly intense. This vizio doesn't have ANY heat problemsI'm really impressed here.

Neither pro nor cons:

Battery lifefor web browsing and document editing you should expect to get about 4.5 hours. This is fine for me but it simply can't compare to the 6.5 hours I got with my mac.

Speakersgood for laptop speakers, but they lack a lot of lows and are definitely inferior to my previous mac's speakers.

Touchpadit is probably the best touchpad you will find on a PC! That being said, it still isn't quite as good as the apple touchpads. What I think I miss the most is how fluid the scrolling was on the macthis vizio can't quite compare although I think it is more a limitation of microsoft windows.

Windows 8Windows 8 is just plain weird. I'm slowly adjusting to it, but this is seriously weird. I've used PCs for all except the last two years (when I got my mac) and have had quite a few confusing moments with it. I think I will get adjusted fine eventually though. The good news is that Windows 8 appears to be very efficient power and speed-wise.

Cons:

Keyboardit kind of sucks. The key travel is very low and there is a small amount of flex. Put these two problems together and it is definitely not the easiest computer to type on. You will end up accidently double-typing a lot of letters. I think this may be something I will adjust to though. It just will require you to adjust the way you are used to pushing on keys though. The keyboard on the macbook is the best there is on any computer and it definitely beats the vizio. Note the samsung 15" ultrabook has similarly low key travel issues too but I found it more comfortable to type on that this computer.

ChargerTwo problems: 1. It is piano gloss blackwhat this means is after 1 day of use you will already have plenty of scratches on it and it is going to look like crap after a couple of weeks. 2. I really wish more comopanies would design their power bricks so they can be directly plugged into the wall like apple does. As someone who always commutes with my laptop it is really annoying to have to pack not only the charging brick but ALSO a huge annoying cord as well.

Overall, I'm very happy with this computer though. I did pay significantly less than retail during a blackfriday sale but you will be very hard pressed to find a 15" ultrabook with specs anywhere near this for the price. Unless you really need the extra space and speed of the CT15-A5 the CT15-A4 may be a much more affordable option and likely has even better battery life.

I finally bit the bullet and bought it from microsoft store for $799.

Mainly because I thought that for 1080p IPS Laptop with Core i7 and 256GB SSD is pretty good deal and I can live with any downsides. And I think I am justified.

The main feature of this laptop is 1080p IPS MATTE SCREEN. Very vibrant and well color balanced. I am absolutely thrilled how good it is. I had a think pad x201 tablet and it was difficult to work with in direct sun but this one is workable even at the half brightness. The brightness is a little bit more than SONY VAIO S series 15" notebooks.

The second most important feature is 256GB SSD. It is not a whole lot of space to store your media. But other than that it is more than adequate. I run two VMs off of it and have documents and other stuff and does the job. Pretty snappy boot time. I had a samsung SSD SATA-II based and it is easily twice as fast as that.

If these two features haven't made you fall in love with this then third one is large trackpad and bloatware/trialware free windows. It looks nice and very sleek and lightweight and has a neat look. Boots in 3 seconds.

Great. Now stop here and go buy the laptop!!!

Okay Great you bought it!!! Honeymoon is over and now work on the compromise and respect each others's feeling. Stop complaining about the keyboard! Yeah I know you don't like it. The old thinkpad had a pretty good keyboard...but live with it. After sometime you will begin to like it.

Yes my only wish was dedicated PgUp and PgDown key and full size arrow keys. The key does misses sometimes. But hey that black spot above your nose doesn't look right either.

Okay I know your next complaint, Windows 8... well it is not too bad. You will get used to it. Learn a few gestures and with good trackpad you will have the honor of educating your friends on how to use windows 8 and start convincing them to drop their iProducts and make a switch (as if they will ever!! after all they earn for apple).

Battery life is what everybody said. And I am comfortable with that. The only complain is that to replace it is a pain when time comes. Good news is that replacing battery yourself will not void the warranty. Does it matter if it wasn't covered? Hell no. Because you will most probably be replacing the battery after warranty expires in one year. If you buy additional warranty, check if they will cover battery replacement or you may end up losing your warranty. You have been warned!!!

On warranty side, A three year warranty on this thing will probably cost you about $200 with ADP. So once you pay $200 and anything happens you get back $799. But that means you effectively netted $599 to get a replacement. So save your money ($200) because after two year you will want to buy a new laptop anyway. Hey Haswell is just around the corner. Isn't it?

For those brave souls who want to install Virtual Machine. The key to get to BIOS is F2. (to save yourself time to search). If you are unable to get to BIOS after repeated shutdown and pressing F2 then you are probably just resuming windows not restarting. Use the restart option of windows 8 and then press F2 and enable Virtualization in BIOS and you will be good to go.

**UPDATE 2/1/2013 **

Spilled some coffee on the laptop. But was quick in drying it out so didn't encounter any issues. The key felt sticky for next two days but became fluid again.

The keyboard feels fine now..that I am getting used to it. So folks .. it takes some time but you will eventually forget about it.

The screen still feels very good... I work with about 30% brightness and still think it is very bright.

**EDIT April 10 2013: After deliberating for 4 months and looking at the latest 15.6" laptops, I finally settled on the HP dv6t-7300 Quad Core with 1920x1080p 15.6 inch screen. The HP is a serious powerhouse with 2.4-3.4GHz Quad Core CPU and state of the art Nvidia GT-650m 2GB graphics card. It has all the ports I wanted, and a DVD/BlueRay drive plus backlit keyboard. I ordered a 1TB hdd with it, and you can easily add a mSATA SSD (up to 480GB) if you want, providing a total of 1.48TB storage. The total cost after discount is still under $1K! The only negative is weight, the HP is 5.6lbs, but I think the additional weight is well worth it for the features I get in return.

Original Review:

Purchased this from Amazon a week ago, tried to like it, but the defective battery and questionable design choices ultimately doomed this laptop. A bit of background I am a laptop aficionado, after all I have owned close to a hundred laptops over the years, from a 4.5" Sony Vaio UX to 17" gaming machines. I simply think if you are going to shell out a grand or more for a machine, you should expect a lot from it. Here are my observations for the CT15-A5:

Pros:

1. Thin and relatively light for a 15 inch laptop

2. Cool industrial design striking to look at

3. Nice rubberized bottom

4. FAST Toshiba mSATA SSD (Windows experience index 8.1 -fastest I have ever seen!)

5. Nice, sharp screen with good viewing angles

6. Windows 8 really made this machine fly boots lightning fast, shuts down quickly, a pleasure to use

7. Great WiFi I am getting 300Mbps connection one floor up from my WiFi router, using 5GHz band. This is the best result I have ever seen amongst all the 20+ laptops I currently own.

8. Solid chassis and lid. The chassis is solid with no flex, and the lid is almost perfect no matter how hard you press on the lid, the LCD screen will not show the slightest bit of waviness. The chassis should be very good for frequent travelers.

Cons:

1. Defective battery this brand new laptop is already showing 13% battery wear (using battery meters), and only lasts about 3.5 hours on a full charge, instead of the advertised up to 7 hours. While I don't expect a full 7 hours, I was hoping at least 5 hours. This is really disappointing.

2. It feels a lot heavier than it looks, probably due to its large, thin form factor. When you hold the edge with one hand, the size makes it unbalanced and hence feels heavy.

3. Slow CPU/Graphics speed for a Core i7 they killed performance by using a single channel RAM (below par graphics and memory speed that could be easily rectified by using 2x2GB instead of 1x4GB RAM)

4. Touchpad STILL not the best difficult to get charms and double finger scrolling (yes I upgraded the driver to the latest version)

5. No backlit keyboard would have really made the design great

6. Wrong screen color balance too much green and red hue on the 15.6 inch display, had to adjust it in Windows calibrate color to make it look neutral

7. Proprietary AC connector good luck trying to buy any 3rd party power accessories like AC adapters or external batteries none will work

8. Aluminum design means it will scratch, ding and nicks easily

9. Machine is not upgradable in any way, form or shape. You are stuck with what you have.

10. Not enough ports just two USB ports, HDMI and headphones?? Why can't they add more ports and an SD card reader like the CN15?

This is a nice, fast machine for day-to-day usage (not games), but the defective battery forced me to return it. This is really sad, as I had high hopes for this machine and was excited for its potential. However I am still in the market for a 15" laptop, and these are now my choices:

A. Sony Vaio S 15.5: Nice backlit keyboard, light 4.4lbs, internal DVD/Bluray, lots of ports, but I don't like the numeric pads that skewed the keyboard, and standard battery life is not much better at 4 hours. Around the same price as the CT15-A5. Optional sheet battery will increase the battery life to 8 hours at the expense of 0.5lbs weight and 1/2 and inch added thickness. Crummy speakers.

B. Samsung Series 9: The lightest, thinnest 15" at 3.5lbs, but no optical drive nor HD screen and pricier at $1500 average configuration, but even sexier than the Vizio. A really nice machine, but I want full HD on a 15" screen.

C. Vizio CN15-A5: power hungry 45W Core i7 runs hot (The Vaio S is 35W and the CT15-A5 is 17W), no backlit keyboard, heavier at 5.2lbs and still no optical drive, but slightly cheaper with 32GB SSD accelerated 1TB drive and more ports, same battery life, Not quite sure about this guy.

D. HP Envy 15: slightly older design, thicker and heavier, but built like a tank, nice optional full HD screen and lots of ports, may have been discontinued though. I think there is a new 15" Envy with full HD screen, lighter but weaker battery.

E. There is always the ultimate MacBook Pro 15" Retina display laptop, but it will burn a big hole in my wallet.

Not sure which one I will get eventually... leaning towards the Sony right now, will have to get the sheet battery and live with the extra weight + thickness. Just hope I can learn to tolerate the skewed keyboard.

ASUS G73JH-RBBX05 Notebook PC - Black

Since I am a student, I was looking for a very powerful laptop for a very long time. It had to be a real desktop replacement. First, I was thinking about G60VX-RBBX05 for 650. But it is an old model. Then I found G60JX-RBBX05 for 760 which has newer hardware. Then I found this one. I bought it immediately, because I had looked all gaming laptops, such as Toshiba Qosmio, Dell Alienware, Asus N series, Lenovo Ideapads...Some of them were more powerful than this one, but their price...

Actually, I didn't buy this laptop on amazon, but I bought it on bestbuy for 903 dollars (849+tax). It is also refurbished. The package is simplest laptop, battery and charger. Nothing more and nothing more was needed. It has 500 gb hard drive which is sufficient for me because I have external 1 TB hard drive. 6 gb of ram is more than needed :)

I could say that comparing to other gaming laptops this laptop has the best ratio of performance/money. Really, 903 dollars to almost fastest quad-core processor (820qm, 840qm, 920xm, 940xm, and Sandy Bridge processors are better) and almost fastest Mobility Radeon 5870 (GTX 460M, GTX 480M, GTX 285M, and future Radeon 6970M are better)!

Also, I chose Asus because I trust this company. But other people complain but it's support. I haven't tried to use it yet.

Pros:

1) performance

2) backlight on keyboard. Good to play during nights.

3) big screen (enough for me, 1600x900)

4) two places for drives. You can make a good combination of ssd+hdd.

5) powerful speakers+subwoofer.

6) aggressive design. However, girls, I think, won't like it. (it's not pro, actually, but it's what I like in the laptop)

7) Remarkably silent. Even if I put your hands in front for radiators, it is not hot. The bottom doesn't heat up at all.

I hadn't found cons for me. Nevertheless, I would like to enlist some aspects that you might not like:

1) Battery. Yes, it lasts short, but since the laptop is desktop replacement and gaming laptop, I don't care about this.

2) Set of ports and their arrangement. Because of rear cooling system, there are no ports and they are on sides. This makes mess of cables. Also, set of ports is poor. No DVI, no eSATA, no USB 3.0, no FireWire, no ExpressCard port, no dial-up modem (maybe not important nowadays).

3) Huge charger. Yes, it's huge and heavy, but it's desktop replacement. I don't move it at all.

4) Transportability. The laptop is huge and heavy, but again, it's desktop replacement. I don't move it from my table.

5) No multimedia or additional like quick launch keys. Actually, there are some, such as FN+arrows for media players.

6) No Blu-Ray.

7) No Bluetooth.

8) Small screen resolution. There are other g73jh laptops with 1920x1080 resolution.

9) Touchpad button are tough. But I got used to it for a while and moreover I use external mouse.

So, this is my review. Best laptop I ever had. All games run. For students-gamers it is one of the best deals.

It died on me. Motherboard dead, price for new motherboard $920. I've had it for 6 months. Nothing else to add, there are some better deals anyway.

Ok, the laptop is wonderful, I actually got it for like around $900 after taxes at bestbuy (refurbished). If everything on the laptop was in good shape, the only thing I could possibly complain about is the mouse pad, it drives me nuts, it skips and you need to press down very hard to click. So if you bought this PC brand new, that would be my only complaint.

Now, the refurbished one I bought had several major issues. The guy who did the refurbishing must have been completely careless. CRACKED SUBWOOFER SPEAKER (Sounds terrible!), it came with software problems as well, the computer would say "start-up is preparing your computer for first use" each time you boot it up, so I started hibernating it instead to bypass the problem. What else... Oh yea, several burnt pixels on the screen. So, a cracked speaker, software issues and burnt pixels is what I got. But I did save 3-400 bucks for the risk.

I would say buy it, I doubt this would happen to you, I just lucked out on the guy who refurbished mine :-/

I bought this ASUS G73J excited about its two year GLOBAL warranty and for its great reviews. However, within the first year of buying the laptop, I have had to send it in 2 times for screen repair. I am not talking about bright-dots. I am talking about TOTAL screen misfunction. It is a tempting buy because of its specs, but PLEASE do not buy this computer. For anyone who depends on it for their work, especially if they travel abroad, their global warranty is false advertising. Repairs are only available at certain centers in the US and in other limited countries, making it almost impossible for users who travel outside of those regions to get service. DO NOT BUY THIS BRAND OF COMPUTER. I have had a much worse experience with this brand than with any HP, Toshiba, Mac, Dell or other brand of laptop I have owned.

I brought an ASUS g73 laptop less than a year ago. The laptop failed. I sent it to them for warranty repair and they sent it back with a whole new set of issues (missing screws, the keyboard was now defective, and the video was failing). I sent it back to them again, get it back and right out of the box again a new issue (no network card)! I sent it back to them yet again and they sent it back out to the wrong address! Now, I don't even know if my laptop is working or not yet and on top of it it's 100 miles from where I live. I have called them several times, they would keep apologizing and claim they would fix the issue, and then screw it up yet again. I have reached my limits with dealing with these people! They refuse to simply replace the unit with a new one or just refund my money, they even refuse to let me speak with a manager. I have never met people with this level of incompetence in my life! I can't get anyone at ASUS to actually do anything useful, FedEx won't re-route the package because they only let the shipper do it. So I guess I am just supposed to be out my laptop! (After a lot of screaming I got it Back).

This is the kind of service you can expect from these people. I guess that is why they have over 1000 complaints listed with the BBB over the last 3 years almost all for customer service and tech support issues.

Now, after 4 RMA's I am once again having issues with this laptop! The mouse pad is still not working, which was my original complaint with this machine before the kept returning it to me with more and more issues. I finally had enough of this! I called tech support so I could just get the part and repair this thing at my own expense and sell it so I would never have to deal with ASUS ever again. After waiting on the phone over a half hour at 11:30 at night I get this genius who couldn't even supply me with a part number for their own product! Her suggestion was to look for it myself!

I was disappointed that this laptop didn't work. We kept getting messages that it needed a driver but when we tried to download we couldn't. I had another old Dell laptop that lasted me about 7 years and it was already at least 10 years when it was handed down to me. It didn't have all the bells and whistles of the new models but it was sturdy & dependable. So when my son needed something just to stay in touch with the world (he lives in the middle of no where, literally) I shipped it to him and it worked great for him. But I guess the old machine finally gave out. I just should have bought him a new computer instead of taking my chances with an old refurbished machine. But if you can get an old Dell that's still in good working order you've got yourself a bargain. I heard they aren't making Dell anymore & that's too bad 'cause they're great products. BTW Amazon and the seller are awesome. They really gave me first rate treatment & no hassles about returning it.

I Installed Linux and Firefox and gave it to my wife to use. so far the computer is functioning good except it comes on by itself every night. I traced the problem, found it to be the "wake" is on, and I couldn't change without the Bios password. I will contact the seller to see if they have the password.
