Originally I had seen it on ebay, but it was more expensive, so I checked Amazon. The laptop has an older processor, but I don't see any difference in the speed compared to a much more expensive and newer laptop that my husband just bought that has the newest processor out. The only con to this laptop is that there is no built in webcam, but its an easy fix. Just would have been nice if it was built in. Other than that, I love it. It works great and the design is awesome. I would highly recommend this to any person looking to purchase it for enjoyment. (I.E. surfing the web, downloading music, print pictures, etc.)

I purchased this computer a couple of weeks ago and I have to honestly say that I love the hell out of this thing ! It was a great deal, perfect size ( larger than your normal notebooks) and has everything you need on it ! I also purchased a nice router to go along with it. It is fast, clear, nice size screen, great resolution, battery life is about five hours.. I am very, very pleased with this computer !!!

Not a ton of features, but has a fast enough processor for web surfing and MS Office. Goes to sleep and comes back to life quickly with Windows 7. Good alternative to a netbook that has a micro-sized screen. I also have the Acer version (straight Acer brand, not Acer eMachines) and it is almost identical to this laptop, but has an AMD processor. I think this processor feels a little faster. Just wish the processor was a dual-core. Also beware that the screen resolution only has a height of 768, which by today's standards is a little short. But for the money, you can't beat it.

I bought mine for about $300 and so far its been a great laptop. My 4 year old watches DVDs on it and cartoons off youtube and its great for surfing the web. It has done everything I have asked it to do and is actually faster than my desktop with a dual core processor. Ive pretty much put away the desktop. It starts right up and shuts down in the blink of an eye as well. My only problem is with the touch pad which seems finicky but I hear theres a fix for that...Im just too lazy to try. This was an excellent value, it does more than a netbook will and at about the same cost. If you just need a basic setup then this is it.

Just got this today. As a test for the processor and ram I downloaded Wow. It runs at about 23 fps. Which is better than the desktop I had that had an AMD processor. It is a new experience working on Windows 7. It is pretty nice, but will take a little bit to get used too. Over all very satified at the moment.

Great piece of hardware to introduce someone to Mac OS without having to buy a new one.

Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 Athlon X2 QL-65 2.1GHz 3GB 250GB DVD±RW DL 15.6" Vista Home Premium

Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 Athlon X2 QL-65 2.1GHz 3GB 250GB DVD±RW DL 15.6' Vista Home PremiumFive stars for bang for the buck.

Got this for my long-suffering Dell-owning girlfriend three months ago, after much searching for a basic laptop at a good price. We paid well under five bills for it new, and have had no problems whatsoever. Even the dreaded Vista is working fine, as there's plenty of RAM for it to hog.

First time with a Toshiba laptop and I must say I'm impressed. The body and keys are light plastic, but still feel solid. To sell this unit this cheap, some corners must be cut. Those are good ones to cut. The stuff under the hood is what matters, and that stuff is solid. The burner burns cds and dvds well and quickly. The computer gets a tad warm but not overly so; the fan blows very warm air out to the left, and is so efficient that you can warm your hands in the air in the winter! The screen is wider than most and I like that effect.

We got it mainly for the net and it does that very well indeed. As fast as my friend's 2,500 clams MacBookPro, in fact. Sure, his graphics are tighter and the machine is way more solid...but it cost six times more. If, like my gal, you mainly use your laptop for the net and making cds, looking at photos and the occasional movie, this is a very fine unit. I've been writing on this one for nine hours straight today, and have no eye fatigue or signs of impending carpal tunnel. Gotta like that.

One thing well worth mentioning is the amazingly intelligent idea of having an analog dial for the volume on the front of the unit. Duhhh!! Why have I never seen this on a laptop before? It makes so much sense. Plus there's a mute button up top near the power button, and ff/rew and play buttons. These are features we use a lot and it's wonderful to not have to open them on the screen every time. Very smart design.

We looked at every laptop out there and decided that this Satellite offered the most value.

So far, we think we made a very good choice.

Well done, Toshiba.

It is a nice laptop with good memory. It has a variety of DVD viewers I use a few different ones depending on the type of movie. I have my iTunes on my laptop ... playback is good. The only thing I recommend is to have a laptop cooler pad and additional speakers because the computer speakers are good but not great. It is definitely a good buy if you are on a budget. If you looking for a light weight laptop ....it is kinda on the heavy side. It works for me though!

First thing to note: I did not purchase this computer on Amazon. I bought it through Best Buy. Second, I've had this computer for nearly three years at the time of this review. Originally, I purchased it around July of 2009. It came with Win Vista, but it qualified for the free upgrade to Windows 7, which I got through the mail a few months after that OS came out. So, my time with Vista was limited, and I can't say for certain how the computer performed then versus now, because it seems to me that the performance is similar.

I've done a lot of personal experimenting on this computer. When I upgraded to Win 7, I originally stayed with 32 bit for awhile, just to get a feel for the OS in a more stable environment. Eventually, I did a clean install of Win7 64 bit and ran into a few surprises. First, the drivers that Toshiba provides for the 64 environment didn't seem to work as well. Flash cards didn't work at all (the utility that uses your FN keys to do nifty things). The display driver was atrocious. I had screen lags, and a lot of my software didn't display properly. I even looked for an update from ATI directly, but because this is a device that is heavily controlled by Toshiba, I couldn't find a workable solution.

So, I went back to Win 7 32bit, and I've been using that ever since. My overall experience has been satisfactory, but there have been issues with this laptop. First, the battery life was terrible on both Vista and 7. On average, I was only getting about an hour and a half with mild usage. Second, several of my ports displayed bad behavior. In particular, I haven't had much luck with the built in SD card reader. It tends to lose the drives after awhile, causing corrupted files. Sadly, this is one feature that I haven't been able to use.

About a year into owning this notebook, I had to have the screen looked at. I took it to a friend who works on computers, and he told me that the connector for the display didn't have a locking mechanism on it, so it just kind of sat on the motherboard. He reconnected it for me, and I haven't had trouble since, but I'm still waiting for it to happen again.

I also had to replace the hard drive early on, because it apparently shipped with defective sectors. Probably physical damage. I was constantly losing files because of this, and so I wasn't productive. Once I replaced the hard drive (a very simple process), the problem was cured, and I haven't had those issues since.

I've also noticed a tendency for the USB ports to function in an erratic way. This problem has become worse in the past few months, and I beleive that the motherboard may be about to quit on me.

Despite these issues, the notebook has given me two and a half years of computing. I've done light gaming on it, ran virtual machines, surfed the web. All without a hiccup. My biggest complaint with this notebook, is the screen brightness. Even on its highest setting, the display doesn't seem very bright, which makes watching TV and movies a disappointing experience.

I've also come to dislike the volume knob on the front of the computer. I sometimes work in my car, and so the computer is jammed up against my stomach. As I move in the seat, the knob often gets hit, causing the volume to fluctuate. This isn't a big issue, but it can sometimes surprise me when I get home and fire up a video or song.

The speakers are blah. If you tweak the setting in Realtek manager, you can get a somewhat better experience. But don't expect miracles there. A decent set of headphones will solve the problem, as will external speakers.

I did eventually get a high capacity battery for this thing. 98,000 mWh versus something like 47,000. The irony is, I get about 2.5X the amount of battery life. So, I went from an hour and a half on average to about five hours, fifteen minutes.

Regarding the hardware issues. I purchased this notebook from a Best Buy store. Honestly, I believe it was something in the way they handled the thing when they brought it into their inventory. Maybe they were careless or something. With the exception of the screen going out, I can't really say that it's a design issue. It cools well enough, and it's been a pretty reliable computer for the most part.

I'll be retiring this beast in another few weeks as I have a replacement on the way. I should tell you that I purchased another Satellite through the Toshiba website. I hope that tells you how much I've liked this one. For less than $500, it was a good bargain at the time. Despite the problems I've had with it over the years, I've come to love it. It was my workhorse for a long time. I'm thinking of either selling it, or re-purposing it for a linux installation.

A sidenote: I have tried linux on this computer. Mainly Ubuntu. The notebook did well with it, although the fan seemed to run all the time. I noticed that the usb ports didn't seem to have as much of an issue, and even the SD card reader worked a lot better.

I would recommend this product to someone who's thinking of buying it as a refurbed model. It's not a bad computer for the money. A little dated now, but still a worthy road warrior.

I bought this laptop in the late summer/early fall of 2008. This was a quick/cheap replacement as I boke the screen on my old HP. Got this bad boy for $375 with a wireless printer package deal at a local best buy mainly got it for college papers, movies, the usual college stuff... I TAKE iT EVERYWHERE with me and has not failed me yet. Its now 5/16/11 and about time for a new battery as it only holds about 30 minutes of charge but its a cheap replacement and well worth it!! I'd buy another one with out hesitation.... For under $400 after tax this laptop has saved me thousands and still runs fast and is reliable. Finally going to upgrade to 6GB memory as I now have 3. it runs quick with 3 can't wait for 6!!!!

2/21/12 UPDATE: My PC is still running like a champ! :)

The battery life is short, you will need external speakers or head phones. But the biggest problem I had was the motherboard was fried, dead as a door nail three days after the manufacturers warranty ran out. I had to send it in for repairs twice in the year I had it because of loose connections to the screen. So if you are looking for a cheap disposable laptop this one is for you.

Acer Aspire S3-391-6676 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne)

Acer Aspire S3-391-6676 13.3-Inch UltrabookI agree with the other positive reviews about the size and looks. I had been searching for months for the perfect laptop for me [lots of surfing and several windows open, but no gaming] at the perfect price. I read lots of reviews in my search. Kim Komando, [from whom I get most of my computer info] listed several must have options. One was Core i5 over Core i3, because i3 is old technology. Just before I bought this one, in my Amazon search, I specified i5. This recommendation popped up and I assumed it was I5 and bought it because all of the other specs were just right, without realizing that it was not what I intended. In fact, it was only after several days of use that I realized my error. My ram meter indicated that I am normally using 60-70%. I decided to improve that by adding another 4 gigs of memory. I discovered that the memory is soldered in instead of plugged in therefore I could not do it myself.

My first laptop was an Acer, and after getting a hard drive replaced due to early failure, it worked well for 3 years, but the battery got to where it wouldn't hold a charge. I decided Acer deserved my business again.

Pros:

1. Perfect size and weight.

2. Looks great.

3. Fast and mostly intuitive in its operation [after adding a Windows 7 shell to the Windows 8 OS, because it was easier for me to use good choice].

Cons:

1. Locks up frequently and requires a hard shut down. Sometimes I get the message during reload that I had a Service_Exception_Error, and they will shut the computer down for me and restart it. Sometimes I have to do a hard shut down again when it fails to continue loading but goes gray screen on me for an extended period.

2. Loses my Wi-Fi connection frequently each day, so that I have to disconnect then reconnect, which always fixes it. I upgraded my router thinking it could be the problem, but the new, fast, super-duper one does the same thing. The Fire does not have that problem.

3. I want more memory but can't add it myself.

4. It would be nice to have a backlit keyboard.

I'm writing all these issues down in the hopes that someone can suggest fixes for me. I had a couple of issues about my Kindle Fire HD, which I mentioned in my review, and got a couple of really good responses which fixed my issues totally. Thanks guys...

I got this because I really wanted a 13" ultrabook. There were problems with wi-fi even when I was in the same room as the router my internet kept getting disconnected. The speakers are not very good the sound quality is very tinny. I do not recommend this at all. I decided to invest in a mac-book pro rather than having to replace a windows laptop every couple of years

I purchased this laptop as a Xmas gift for my girl, and hand carried it to Taipei (Taiwan) during Xmas where she is currently studying. The laptop was found to be unstable soon after power it up (wireless on and off, and system lock up frequently). I took it back to Acer service station in Taipei and they reloaded Window 8 for me. The problem stopped for a few weeks then came back.

I have no quick way to bring it back to US for return and I don't have the original packing box with me here. I will not recommand this model to anyone.

For the money, this laptop performs well, is a great size, and seems to be very reliable (Given I have only owned it for a month). It was a present for my fiance, and given she is pretty picky and usually prefers a larger form factor, I was concerned that she may be disappointed by a smaller ultrabook. To my suprise (and hers) she has actually taken to the size of this book well, and after getting used to Windows 8, seems to prefer the book over her previous Lenovo Thinkpad. The battery life, she charges it once every couple days (doesnt use it continously though). All in all, I dont think for the cost I could have found a better book.

A great value for an ultra-book. Its very fast, thin, and built very well with good materials.

I was considering the S7 but i didn't think it was worth the HUGE increase in price from this one.

I paid $553.98 here and i was not able to find any other retailer that was offering anything close to this price for this model.

I would highly recommend it.

Definitely a buy!

ASUS Zenbook UX32VD-DH71 1.90-3.00GHz i7-3517U 10GB 250GB SSD 1GB NVIDIA Geforce GT 620M Full HD 10

ASUS Zenbook UX32VD-DH71 1.90-3.00GHz i7-3517U 10GB 250GB SSD 1GB NVIDIA Geforce GT 620M Full HD 1080POrdered this laptop online since I needed to replace my sluggish netbook (remember those?) that finally broke.

Pros:

Beautiful, solid hardware.

Extremely light.

Decent battery life, even in high performance mode (3.5+ hours)

Upgrades match what is described on this item (a previous reviewer said he didn't see the upgrades, maybe he got unlucky)

Relatively fast.

Cons:

The trackpad is absolute garbage. It was very hard to type without accidentally clicking a button or popping up a menu. Disabling the trackpad was even harder since Function-F9 does not even work properly on the laptop. Luckily, 1) I typically use an external mouse and 2) I found some drivers that let me disable the trackpad when an external mouse is plugged in (this driver does screw up the default configuration as the mouse cursor suddenly disappears from time to time when using only the trackpad). The trackpad is basically what prevents this from being a 5-star review.

Overall, it's a good laptop, but if you are someone who likes using the trackpad (unlike me), you're gonna have a bad time.

A great powerful laptop with dedicated Nvidia card and lots of RAM.

Pros: i7 CPU the power is always there.

HD display 1920X1080

Unibody Aluminum casing

10GB RAM you can run 4 VM on it and you wont even feel it

Cons: Useless mini-VGA port

keyboard could have been made better (a bit jumpy)

Would recommend it to any one in need for a light powerful 13" laptop.

It is really thin and light (one of the main reasons I bought this gear) the screen is not glossy, rich color, crisp fonts. The sound is really good compares to other ultrabooks (Zenbook's audio is made by Bang & Olufsen! cant believe the rich sound comes out from this little body.) I am now willing to bring it everyday with me.

However, few days ago I thought it was slow compares to my other Macbook pro util today I found the laptop was always on "battery saving mode". After I switch it to performance mode it worked a lot faster! impressive model.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

ASUS G75VW-DS71 17.3-Inch LaptopI purchased this laptop to replace a HP HDX18. It was a good laptop, but I had numerous issues with it from the start (for some reason HP has a real problem with optical drives failing). Finally, the video card (or possibly the screen--I never verified) died, so I went about looking for a solid replacement. While the ASUS RoG line is pricey, there is an undeniable quality of construction that just wasn't there with my prior HP laptops. It just feels solid, tight, not loose and rickety like so many other brands.

The specs speak for themselves. I'm not a big gamer, but I do 3D modeling and rendering as a hobby, and this thing handles rendering almost as well as my desktop computer. The 12GB of RAM really helps to keep everything running smoothly, no matter how many programs I have open or Chrome tabs running simultaneously.

I did do a personal upgrade from the standard operating system hard drive to a 128GB solid state drive (SSD). The speed difference is astounding! If you're not comfortable with changing out hard drives and re-installing Windows and drivers, then just make the upgrade here at the point of purchase; otherwise, it's not difficult. Either way, you'll be VERY glad you made the leap to SSD!

The mouse pad is a multitouch pad. There is no scroll section off to the side like in my HP laptops. Scrolling is achieved by dragging two fingers simultaneously down the touchpad. Zooming in and out is achieved just how it is done on iPhones and Androids, by squeezing fingers together on the pad or by spreading them out. Three fingers dragged down is "Show Desktop", etc. There aren't a lot of multitouch commands, but the ones that are there are pretty handy.

I only have two complaints so far:

1) the speakers are inordinately quiet. My HP could get pretty loud. This thing? Not so much. It's probably OK for most people, but I have three small kids and my wife is always running some kitchen appliance, so I need my laptop to be able to overcome a lot of background noise. As is, this one's capabilities are barely adequate.

2) a minor complaint, but still a tad annoying--I can't find where to change the abilities of some of the function keys. For example, "fn+Enter" (on the keypad) brings up the calculator. I want to change this to bring up not the Microsoft basic calculator, but GraphCalc 4.0.1 that I use far more often. So far, I have been unable to find this functionality.

Overall this is a fantastic piece of equipment. It's solid, feels rugged (though I hope to never test that), and is very powerful. If I wasn't addicted to my dual-monitor beast of a desktop computer, this laptop could certainly function as a good desktop replacement.

This is a 30-day user review. I purchased the same Amazon product from J&R directly after looking at my pricing options, but Amazon is always competitive great. I'll state upfront I'm satisfied with everything so far. I've read some mixed reviews and understand everyone has a different experience. With that said, I'll go into detail.

1. As a laptop that's really a desktop replacement for a casual gamer, that category means, its more luggable than portable. It comes with a nice ROG branded back pack, so you'll look cool lugging it around, if needed. Don't complain about short battery life or heavy power supply since that was a trade made when you wanted a gaming laptop. I'll agree there may be lighter options. The build quality won't get you a lightweight.

2. As a gaming platform, you may want to buy a gaming keyboard. I did, and while there is nothing wrong with the keyboard, you may want to adjust the screen location to be higher than your arms can rest comfortably. Also you can customize keys beyond what the ASUS software natively supports. The USB ROG Gaming mouse that comes with it is really superb.

3. Despite the awesome processor and graphics, the Windows Experience is low (under 6 on a scale of 8) because of the speed of this laptops SATA III 7200-rpm drives make the test scores fall below 7. Be advised, the 2 identical 750GB drives are not slow. If you want you can "customize the RAID configuration in BIOS and give-up capacity (1.5TB) by using a STRIPED RAID configuration. You'll also give up the restore partition, which to me is an awesome feature in case of disaster. As a casual gamer, an alternative would be to add a SSD Hybrid drive (I did) and it's not a noticeable problem with boot time or OS access. All of the USB ports are 3.0 capable.

4. The OS is Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. While I used an anytime upgrade to Win 7 Ultimate, and I like it that way, others may clamor for Windows 8. I'm run Windows 8 in a VM ware 5 product and this machine excels at running a virtual machine. There is a Native Win 8 version that would be a better option if that is your preference. This laptop is upgradable to Windows 8.

5. The built-in media and visualization capabilities are stunning. Blu-ray disc and HD media playback work great. Paired externally with a 3D 1080P 23-in IPS display, that is really awesome. Add an external TV tuner and popcorn, then you are set for a home theater on your desktop. A mini display port and VGA port improve video connection options. There is a fix for the sound drivers that is very simple and straight forward with products that ASUS supports. If it's not good enough, you can also get a good set of external speakers or gaming headphones. It was not a big problem for me, just a preference to relocate the sound. They do make the ASUS N76 series machines with a B&O external sub-woofer and that would not really be for gaming, just sound during media playback.

6. ASUS support is really one of the best in the business. 30-day 0 defect LCD, 2 yr warranty with depot and free shipping, free ADP insurance protect, I have worked with them to resolve problems and they are very helpful.

7. Access to the ROG Portal and User forums for anyone who buys the product is a great perk.

In closing, a little research and adjustment brings out the quality of the laptop. My out of the box experience was great. The tweaks and upgrades make it better. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend or buy again,

The computer has Beat audio speakers so the sound on this is amazing. It sounds amazingly crisp, clear and can sound extremely louder than the MacBook. The top part of the laptop is made out of aluminum but the bottom is made out of tough heavy duty plastic which is great because it allows the computer to be lighter than if it was completely aluminum. Overall, I'm extremely happy.

This laptop was purchased for my grandson who is serving in the US Air Force. He wanted a computer that he could play games on and yet still be very mobile. In talking with him before writing this review he stated that he is extremely pleased with the performance of this device. He says that it is very fast (when internet signal allows), it has a very good graphics card and he is very satisfied with this laptop. The item was shipped directly to his base and was received in excellent condition. Because of my Prime account he received it in two days. The price was very reasonable which was a very big plus for someone on his salary. He would recommend this to others.

Had this Laptop on a good part of the day and no noticeable heat build at all. Screen graphics very good. Side viewing is not that great. You pretty much need to be pretty much centered in front of it. That's not much of a negative at all considering all the other good qualities of the Laptop. Sound quality is very good for a laptop. Very pleased with this laptop.
