HP Compaq Business nc2400 Notebook

HP Compaq Business nc2400 NotebookI use these computers at work for temporary assignments (road trips) and they perform really great! I have had several different models (Dell D430 and this HP NC2400). I like the NC2400 a little better because it has a DVD installed. Not that I need a DVD all the time but it is nice to have when you need it and you do not have to carry an external one with you everywhere. I have loaded Linux and Windows 7 on these machines and they are really fast with Linux (Linux Mint) and fast with Windows 7 32 bit.

For what these machines are they do their job really well. They are not Game machines, nor are they video edit machines. They are Great for Web, Word processing (writing reports) putting up a power point, and fit in almost any small case as they are only 12" screen. This one I am writing this review on has an 80GB HDD, a dual layer DVD (I may change it to a Btu-ray) It has a dual core 1.2GB CPU and 2GB RAM. Just fine for road use. Lightweight, Small form factor, easy to use and Windows 7 works like a champ on it. What more could you ask for? I have another unit on the way I purchased on Amazon.. HP Compaq Business nc2400 Notebook

got it refurbished, the seller had not been accurate in many issues with delayed responses. i got it as a second laptop. the screen resolution is poor, keyboard is ok, good sound. it came with windows xp, poor battery life.

the only issue is that it is cheap and has a nice size with cd.

Hewlett Packard 8440P I5-520M 2.4G2 GB 250 GB 14IN W7P/XPP WZ227UT#ABA

Hewlett Packard 8440P I5-520M 2.4G2 GB 250 GB 14IN W7P/XPP WZ227UT#ABAnot sure how its possible that the other persons laptop fell apart, im using this laptop my self and sold 4 of those in the last 6 month, in super durable, made out of light aluminium, it is built according to military standards, the only explanations i can see that someone tuke it apart and did not put the screws back in or worse it was drooped, i have no issues with keyboard or casing what so ever , in fact i love the keyboard, its kinda different , much easier to type then most laptops, they keys are flat and very well structured. other than that operating systems run super smooth both XP or windows7, screan is super bright and sharp, and to top it off it has a real video card not those flimsy Intel cheaps, it runs even games nicely, seriously cant say anything bad about this laptop

This laptop is a piece of junk. This is the same laptop provided to me by my employer for my daily work. For the last 12 years, I had Lenovo Thinkpad's and they were great. Then last year I got upgraded to the HP 8440p. Yeah, talk about an 'upgrade.'

I don't even know where to start. From day one, the "8" key on the keyboard was broken. If I hit that key with a certain force and a certain angle, it will pop off. Three of the four rubber pads at the bottom of the laptop that are supposed to keep it from sliding on smooth surfaces have fallen off so any time I'm typing, the laptop is moving all over the desk. On my Thinkpad, I could get ~5 hours of battery life by being aggressive with my power saver mode and dimming the screen; the HP barely get me 3 hours on a new battery. I've had to purchase 2 new batteries (in addition to the original) in a one year span to maintain a measly 3 hours battery life. And then there is the screen. There are many times during the day when I'm working at my desk where I close the lid, pick up the laptop and go to a conference room, and re-open the lid. About 10% of the time, when I re-open the lid, the screen does not come back on even though the computer is clearly still on. The only way to recover was a hard reboot. I thought maybe it was a software issue and had out IT guys look at it and they couldn't figure it out. And then magically one day the problem disappeared, after driving me nuts for 9+ months. I never had anything like this happen with my Thinkpad.

Save yourself the trouble and go buy a better laptop. HP makes great printers (I still have my LaserJet IIP from 1989) but they sure don't know how to make a good laptop.

Let me first say, this is one amazing laptop. Before I got this, I was convinced that the IBM T60 was the epitome of durability and build quality. I begrudgingly admit that this elitebook has it beat. There is no flex in the chassis of this laptop, and no keyboard flex. The keyboard strokes feel solid and full, and the keyboard light is as easy to use as the ThinkLight. The lid is built to withstand 300 pounds of pressure, and this model does have the spill-through keyboard/chassis. I really can't say enough about this laptop, it is that good. I wish they had an IPS screen option, but even the TFT screen on this is better than the T430 I looked at. If you are on the fence, just buy it!

I normally don't write reviews, but this laptop is so crappy I feel I need to warn others. My work only uses HP laptops. I recieved the 8440p as an upgrade for my HP NC6400. I looked forward to the speed and hdd increase. But this new laptop is crap.

1. The bezel around the lcd is not very secure. It feels loose and cheap. I can pull it slightly apart at the seam.

2. The esc key fell off after 2 weeks and can't be reattached. It still works when I press in the open area.

3. The express card slot stinks. Its too big so I had to buy adapters for my cards to fill the space but it makes them very flimsy.

4. After 1 month of use the hdd stopped working and is making crackling sounds.

I'm going to send this in to IT and request a different model.

The only thing I like about it is the keyboard light that pops out of the top of the lcd is very cool when working in a dark environment.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6870 13.3-Inch Aluminum Laptop (Cobalt Blue)

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6870 13.3-Inch Aluminum LaptopI own a 2008 non unibody 15" Macbook Pro and I wanted a second laptop for Windows support. This laptop fits my needs.

First of all, I'll list some of the things I didn't like about the laptop -

The screen lid is heavy, so if you tried to lift/open the screen with just one hand the whole laptop lifts up. Thus, to turn on the laptop or wake up from sleep, I have to use two hands.

Lame branding. On the lid, there's the acer logo in the middle which is great, but on the top right there's some logo for SignalUp (acer technology branding) that could have been omitted. It's not a sticker you can remove. Also the speakers have the words Dolby Theater and Professionally Tuned. Good to know a professional tuned the speakers, but it distracts from the overall aesthetics of the laptop.

Not a backlit keyboard. Not a deal breaker but nice to have, considering it's just a $20 add-on on Dell laptops.

Glossy screen. Not a big fan, and the viewing angles aren't as a good as a current Macbook Pro.

Bloatware, yeah it's there and it's annoying. Took a while to uninstall.

No light to indicate camera is on. It's trivial, but how would I know someone isn't secretly taping me?

Positives +

+ The trackpad on Macs are superior but I was surprised to find the trackpad on this Acer to work pretty well. Two finger scroll is mainly what I love and used to. It also supports Chrome two finger scroll horizontally to go back/forward. The downside is that trackpad area is fairly tiny and at times I would accidentally make a pinching gesture and it would increase/decrease the font on the website I'm on.

+ USB 3.0 and HDMI input. Currently, no Apple laptop supports USB 3.0 and to get HDMI out you have to buy and carry around a dongle.

+ Looks fairly good, seems solidly built 4lbs, not too thick blue color, not black or the same old aluminum color.

+ Screen is generally good, producing vivid colors despite the glossiness. As long as you view it at the right angle, the screen looks sharp.

+ Battery life...very good. I played 2 720p MKV movies at full brightness and it lasted nearly 4 and a half hours. So I can see it going 8 hours for light web/document editing use. Battery is built-in, so it's not easily swappable.

Lastly, price...fantastic price for a second generation i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 500gb hard drive. I don't play any PC games so I can't comment on it's graphics power. I use Picassa to edit photos and it's pretty snappy with other apps opened (Chrome, Outlook 2010, Visual Studio). I also do not need an optical drive.

So to sum it up the laptop looks good (not a thick heavy ugly piece of plastic), good performance and good price (half the price of a 13" macbook pro). I do love OS X Lion but I feel Windows 7 has bridged the gap. There are +/to the various operating systems, but for the most part it comes down to preferences and software that you need to get a job done. In this case, I need Outlook 2010 (Outlook 2011 for Mac is still not up to par, and Visual Studio for coding). Highly recommended!

Brilliant buy for my needs. Long battery life in Windows, sometimes saying 10hrs left when was typing in lyx. Slick design, fingers find keys easily for typing.

Dual-Booted: Installed Kubuntu 11.10 and runs flawlessly (just need small edit to get screen brightness adjustable and power managment improved-search in ubuntu 11.10 forums) but with about 90% of the battery life it gets in windows (Win7 power management little better) but still getting >7hrs battery life depending on usage.

Running python image analysis scripts as quick, if not quicker that on my Core 2 Quad on my desktop.

Screen looks great and the 1366x768 (I think) is brilliant as still can show a lot on the screen if using for coding and image displays.

The sound is good and makes watching series etc. great, especially helps having the 16:9 aspect ratio on the screen for most movies. Means picture not actually smaller than a 15inch screen.

Had this for 2 months now and no complaints.

This is my 2nd Acer laptop purchase in a few months from the TimelineX Series. This thing is light, powerful, and the battery lasts 6-10 hours depending on use. Just a note: doesn't have a CD drive. This is fine because I don't need it and it makes it lighter. When compared to a similar Macbook pro (exact same specs and $500+ more), this thing is awesome. Other than the pre-installed bloatware (took about 2 hours to remove), I have no complaints.

Did a lot of research and found this to be the best combination of price, performance, reliability and size for our high schooler.

Pros:

more than adequate speed for non-gaming use, no visible lag on anything

nice trackpad, good sensitivity not quite MacBook Pro level, but best I've seen on a PC

price is great, esp. given how comparable it is to a MacBook.

sturdy build, the aluminum body feels like it'll withstand a decent amount of real-world abuse toting back and forth to class

8-hr battery life means it'll last a full schoolday without needing to plug in

USB 3 and HDMI interfaces mean it'll still be relevant 5 years from now

not overloaded with bloatware (unlike I'd read in some other reviews) 20 mins and you're free of any junk you don't want

Cons:

fan could be quieter (not bad, but not silent)

at 4.0 pounds it's light but not super-light, esp. considering there's no DVD drive (bought a $35 external DVD drive for the rare occasions that's needed)

glossy screen sigh, wish the industry would go back to matte finishes

no backlit keyboard seems only Dells (mediocre reliability record) and Macs (too expensive) get it

Overall, we're super-happy with it so far! Highly recommended.

------

Update: 2 weeks later:

I've had more time to work with it, and am still super-happy. In particular I set up an external USB DVD drive (Amazon's Buffalo DVSM-PC58U2VB, just $35 or something) and plugged the laptop's HDMI into our 50" plasma TV to see how it'd work totally perfect, super-smooth video (my previous laptops had problems there), sound coming through the HDMI just like it's supposed to, and even impressive DVD player software bundled in from Acer (clear.fi? or something).

Far as I can tell the only serious competition for this would be the Toshiba Portege R830, which is lighter by a significant .9 pounds (3.2 vs 4.1) AND includes a DVD drive, but is $150 more and doesn't have USB 3.0. I'm sticking with the Acer.

Intro

I prefer around a 13-14" laptop, I find that a netbook is too small for my big hands, but I find that a 15-17" laptop isn't as portable for what I want. You can find the standard 15.6" laptops for dirt cheap, but the 13-14" laptop range is harder to find a reasonably priced computer. When I found this computer, I realized I'd found something special. It had all the specs I wanted, a sleek chassis, slender design, a great processor, a great battery life, good memory and hdd size and at a decent price.

Overall Performance

This computer has an Intel Core i5 processor which is a quad-core processor which is sufficient for everything from everyday tasks to even some computer gaming. I'm not sure this is the machine you want for gaming on the go without the optical drive unless you're into that video game streaming service, which much lower grade laptops can handle just as well. Overall, the laptop is snappy and performs everything quickly and easily.

Display/Graphics:

The 13.3 display is quite beautiful. It's big enough to use yet small enough to remain portable. The colors and bright and crisp and the resolution is good even for movies. I'm not going to say that it is HD but that's not important to me anyhow. The screen is sturdily attached to the chassis of the computer via a cylinder like design. I believe that the graphics card has dedicated memory for which is a rarity in laptops.

Sound/Speakers:

The sound on this computer blows me away. It is amazing. Most laptop speakers are known for sucking even on Macbooks. But the speakers on this laptop are superb and there is rarely a reason you need external speakers. The sound is crisp and clear and it's just amazing how good the speakers are on this laptop.

Features & Accessories:

The keyboard is good, the keys are spaced more than your standard PC laptop though they take a little getting used to depending on what style of a laptop/keyboard you're switching from. The mouse-pad is ok, but a little smaller than I would like, though the pinch and double finger swipes are nice features but again take getting used to. Connection-wise, you've got 3 USB ports 1 of which is a USB 3.0 which is a nice feature. There's an HDMI port, VGA, mic, headphones and a card reader. It should be noted that like Netbooks most 13.3" laptops don't feature a DVD/CD drive and neither does this one. However, this shouldn't be a problem as you can pick up an external DVD drive relatively cheap online these days for those times you need a DVD/CD and a thumb stick, flash card or an external hard drive won't do.

Battery:

The battery life is outstanding for this little computer and provides anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on your usage. Which is great for a nice portable laptop. The plug also has a quick release feature so that if you trip on the cord the plug will disconnect from your laptop easily without causing damage to either the cord or the laptop. Also, the computer runs amazingly cool. It doesn't feel hot or even really warm to the touch even after hours of use and you can feel cool air blowing out the side which is quite nice.

Conclusion:

Everything in this laptop looks nice and is well designed. Simplicity, portability, great sound and sleekness of design are this products key features. If this sounds like the kind of laptop that will suit your needs I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.

Sony VAIO VPCEH37FX/W 15.5-Inch Laptop (White)

Sony VAIO VPCEH37FX/W 15.5-Inch LaptopI am writing this review after a short use as there are not much relevant reviews available. In fact this particular model is not even on Sony's official website. I got it through my Company after an epic fail of Acer laptop within a month.

Here the few quick points to add-

1. This laptop is heavy.. seriously, It is not something to carry on roads or starbucks instead it is good for Home/office use.

2. It has extra numbered keyboard. so if you are used to regular keyboard then you might press wrong keys at times..

3.High performance6gb RAM/iCore 5.. I called sony representative and he told me number in the model tells performance. Higher the number..better the performance... so this machine is highest performer in e series for sony as it is 37.

4. Speakers volume is good for entertainment purpose.

I am generally happy with Sony products. Hope this one will last.. i am really scared to see failure of Acer for no reason. I will add more points based on my experience.

This computer is an outstanding value! You can get the same computer from Sony at a similar price, HOWEVER, here you will not spend the additional costs in sales tax, not to mention the FREE shipping (can vary if different seller than Data Vision)! With 6 gigs of memory, over 600 gigs of hard disk space and an i5 processor you won't beat this deal ANYWHERE, at least not in a higher end model laptop like this one. I really recommend the Sony Vaio wireless mouse in white to go with this, it's a very nice item as well!

Buy Sony VAIO VPCEH37FX/W 15.5-Inch Laptop (White) Now

After buying another HP to replace a defunct one and having it arrive with multiple software and hardware issues out of the box (it was returned after three days,) I decided to take another look at the Sony machines. This Vaio caught my eye and, after diligent research, I made the purchase.

I should have bought this machine first.

From a sheer looks point-of-view, it's a beautiful piece of machinery. When you turn it on, the functions and internal workings match that external view.

Without going into useless nuts & bolts, let me just say that I couldn't be happier with this laptop after a week's worth of putting it through as many paces as I could.

Five stars aren't enough, really.

I have had this laptop for about a month now and it has worked great for a college student in need of a new computer. I use my laptop constantly and love the fast speed it stays at while I multi-task with 5 or 6 programs running at once with its 6gb of RAM. The keyboard is also extremely easy to type on and the number pad on the right works great for my accounting classes.

The hard shell of the laptop also seems very sturdy which is great because it feels very safe for travel. The design also looks great and many friends have complimented on how sleek it looks.

Overall, the laptop has had no performance issues so far and I am very happy with my purchase. If you are looking for a reasonably priced laptop to use for leisure, I would highly recommend this one. Its fast, easy to operate, and has been very dependable so far.

Samsung Series 3 NP305E5A-A06US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue Silver)

Samsung Series 3 NP305E5A-A06US 15.6-Inch LaptopPurchased for a fourteen year old girl for her birthday. I had given her a Dell netbook a few months earlier and needed to atone for that sin. I unloaded unwanted software and installed the Office and antivirus programs i had spare licenses for, tested same. Created backup of fully loaded system prior to deployment (her birthday). Worked so flawlessly I wanted to keep it for myself. Looks good inside and out. Recipient extremely happy. For her diet of homework, Facebook and Maple Story it may be too much computer, but after the netbook fiasco the power surplus was greatly appreciated. May still get one for myself.

I bought this notebook for my daughter for her first year of college her key criteria were a good display and a large hard drive. To that I added: a relatively fast machine (higher RAM) and a relatively newer processor. This combination requirement was well satisfied by this laptopfurther, it had a full size keyboard, including a separate num pad (lacked by equally priced HP and Dell laptops.

The sleek, dual-colour design and the depiction of the screen nudged it over a competing Lenovo machine, which had similar specs and was available for the same price.

I set up the machine for her and I was very satisfied with the workhorse nature of the machine the keys are solid and one can learn to touch-type on it pretty fast. The processor is fast enough and there are no "hangs" while playing movies. Sound quality on the native speakers could have been better. The machine comes with some Samsung utilities pre-loaded but not a whole lot of bloatware or junk.

I did not test out any video resource hungry games on it given that my daughter doesn't play any of those!

Bottomline: Highly recommended for daily, standard use and media playing

the computer is nice. my son says. but the adapter broke, after 5 weeks. Samsung Customer Service says send in the whole computer, let them check it out, and then fix what needs to be fixed. Not really convenient, and a great deterrent of using the warranty service. so, bit the bullet and paid for new adapter cable myself.

generally, laptop adapters do break down relatively fast/often, and I always have a number of them around, and in different locations, so that I cut out excessive wear and tear on those fragile adapters. I have seen them get extremely hot and have meltdown after 2 weeks. But for this one, proprietary to samsung, to break down within such a short amount of time is not encouraging. (looks to the untrained eye that bad soldering was the problem.)

Is by far the best looking with the metal body and nice hinges. The keyboard lights up and is great in the dark. I returned four before this and this one became a keeper immediately. The display screen is very, very thin with hardly any lip on it. Looks great.

After 1 month of light use of this laptop, the computer crashed. I had the one year Acer warranty and called them to get help, but they argued that the issue was due to a windows 8 software problem and could not help me. They wanted to charge me money to send a recovery CD to fix the issue. Furthermore, they couldn't help me with recovering files. Acer, if you're going to give warranties to your customers, don't say it's not your fault that a computer breaks after a month. Last time I will buy an Acer product.

HP Envy 17-1190NR Laptop (Gray)

HP Envy 17-1190NR LaptopFirst off, let me point out that this is the HP Envy 17 3D series laptop, the best that HP makes. One pair of 3D glasses are included, and the 3D demos included with this Laptop are amazing. I haven't had a chance to fully test this thing out, just got it about a half an hour or so ago, but so far, I'm very impressed. The audio is the best, by far, that I've ever heard in a mobile platform (this coming from my previous gaming laptop: Gateway p7811fx). I have not tested any games with it yet, but will follow up when I've tried a few out. The 120hz screen is stunning, that's the only way I know how to put it. The touchpad is finicky, but its something I will try to get used to in the coming days, if not, Ill include that in my follow up. Did I mention the sound quality yet? Another plus to this laptop is the layout of the keyboard. I have large hands and the amount of spacing between the keys makes it more comfortable to type than any other laptop I've used.

To sum it up:

+screen image is amazing

+audio is the best I've heard in a laptop

+excellent keyboard

+3D

+Super Fast!!!!!

The only con I can think of is getting used to the touchpad, I'm sure it wont be much of a con with time.

Ps. The photos don't do this laptop justice.

EDIT-----------------------------------

December/31/2010

I have installed and played a few games so far. Farcry 2 runs great in 3D on high settings, and looks breathtaking, it's hard to describe but it's a definite must see. The touchpad no longer bothers me as I was able to turn down the sensitivity in windows. In addition, I was able to return the F keys to their original function in the BIOS screen, so no big deal there.

In addition, I have been able to play Farcry 2 for hours without experiencing any overheating, the bottom left area gets slightly warm, but no where near uncomfortable.

A few things to point out:

The two 500gb hard drives are not in raid from factory

The photos on Amazon are the wrong laptop, they look similar, however this one says ENVY 17 3D in the top right corner.

The 3D glasses work great, however I have discovered they will not work properly if you are facing a TV that is turned on (I assume IR interference)

Overall I am very impressed with this laptop and feel that it is worth investing in.

EDIT-----------------------------------

April 3 2011

This laptop just up and died on me while playing a game. The screen started to flicker like an old black and white tv. I attempted to restart it, however it will no longer boot on. I contacted HP for an RMA, so far the staff has been very nice and helpful. However, paying this much for a laptop, there is no excuse for it to fail after 3 or 4 months of casual usage.

In December of 2010 I ordered a Dell XPS 17 with the upgraded CPU (i7 840QM) and Nvidia 3GB graphics card. It arrived in January 2011; within 10 days time I began experiencing problems. The machine would freeze and the network card would shut down. I called Dell and they sent a new hard drive Toshiba to replace the Samsung which I was not happy about because it is a cheaper, lower-performing hard drive according to Passmark (). Nonetheless, I was willing to give Dell a mulligan. The technician that came to my house was very professional and quick. My problems persisted. I called Dell and they promised me an exchange. 14 CALENDAR DAYS later I receive an e-mail that reports that XPS 17s have a "worldwide issue with the cpu" and would I like to call them to discuss receiving an XPS 15 in exchange. I asked for a refund and immediately ordered the HP Envy 17 quick ship model.

I received my Envy 17 3D (1190NR) and right away noticed that the feel and profile of the machine is vastly superior to the XPS 17. In fact the only thing that I would say is better about the XPS is the sound (the JBL speakers have great bass and crystal clear sound). Regarding the downgrade from the i7-7-840 to i7-720, I cannot tell the difference between the chips, but I don't do any gaming or video editing. I do lots of multitasking, movies, music, photo viewing. Aside from the better "feel" of the Envy, the screen is also noticeably superior to the XPS screen and the 3D is pretty cool. The Envy quick ship model came with an extra oversize 9-cell battery, which I have learned is really, really needed! The laptop rips through the 6-cell battery very, very quickly. Granted, I choose to have my laptop run the "performance" profile at all times whether plugged in or not.

Regarding HP customer support for new Envy owners: it is awesome! I received my Envy and began reloading my programs, files, etc. and noticed a problem with the audio jacks (I could listen to music/sounds on my headphones, but not on the laptop speakers). Because I had already spent a few hours customizing my computer I asked customer support to process a repair rather than an exchange as I was otherwise happy with the Envy's performance. I kept using my Envy without being able to listen to music. I decided to try and watch a movie on my hdtv using an hdmi cable. While the laptop screen was duplicated onto the hdtv without any problems, the laptop's screen was going crazy--fuzzy, lines, static, weird colors. I called HP Customer Support and told them I had changed my mind; I no longer wanted to repair my Envy, I wanted an exchange. HP's Mulligan. I spent maybe 20 minutes on the phone and next morning (I paid for Next Business Morning) I had my new Envy. It is working great, no problems whatsoever. I am running 4 programs with 12 windows open, music playing, and the machine is working great. Aside from the sucky battery life, my only issue so far has been playing blu-ray videos on my hdtv via hdmi. My tv picks up the regular signal, but once the blu-ray movie begins playing I get a purple screen on the tv (not the laptop). I have read on some forums that it may be an hdmi or refresh rate problem. I've also read reviews that complain about the heat generated by the Envy and I agree that it does get warmer than the XPS, but would not call it hot and definitely not uncomfortable.

All things considered, I am definitely an HP laptop fan and think the Envy 17 is a great buy.

This is a great notebook ( I was corrected when I called it a laptop, although it will fit on my lap but gets really hot). I am no computer whiz, so using a good product support service was critical. And the support (I used it three times) was superb. It comes wwith a two year support contract. And when calling during normal business hours, you get support from the good ol' USA. I would recommend this computer to anyone. Have not tried the 3 D yet.

I bought this laptop because of its large memory. I bought it so that I wouldn't have headaches with slowness or freezing. I didn't and don't plan on installing memory-eating games on it, and I don't even care about the 3D screen. I wanted to use a few programs for my business on it, and I thought that with a terabyte of memory and 6GB of RAM I had overkill, as far as memory goes. So I am very disappointed that it processes even simple programs like Excel slowly.

I have had to call hp 3 times already, because I could not find the answers to some relatively minor problems, after spending HOURS looking through the tons and tons of "help" and "support" information. The memory card that came with the product, which is the electronic user manual, has pictures on it that aren't even this laptop. There are two pictures of disc drives, for example, and both are from older models.

Now I am trying to figure out why this $1500 laptop, which I had thought was a bargain, at that price, is running so slowly. In the process of trying to troubleshoot this issue, I have been prompted to pay more for cleanup tools. Seriously? I am supposed to pay an extra $100 just to have someone take off the crap that they put on here, making it slow? If that's the problem ...

UGH.

To be fair to hp, I believe that most of the slugishness is from Windows programs ... however, hp is putting these programs on their laptops, so they are equally to blame, from a consumer standpoint.

well, i have opened my envy 1190 two days ago. First thing i saw was a defective display. About 25% of the area is much darker than the rest. Luckily, HPIsrael don't ask questions, they just took it to repair.

In the meantime, while we wait for spare parts, i wanted to install all kinds of stuff. So after several windows updates the start menu got bustedit has now some weird black frame around it, where it should be transparent, like in rounded corners, etc. For some reason, firefox stopped showing jpg pictures. So i rolled back windows to a restore point before updates. Firefox was fixed, start menu remains bugged.

From time to time the systems gets stuck for some time. It's really frustrating, i don't see any overload in resource monitor, it's not CPU, memory or HD, almost no applications run, but still for 1020 seconds everything is stuck. Restart helps for some time.

The touchpad really sucks. It's the multitouch thing, but scrolling catches for only about 70% of attempts. I read forums, people suggest installing scrybe to improve it. Well, it does slightly improve it, but now the touchpad has some unwanted functionality. Probably i can switch it off, but i really have no time for these tweaks.

For some reason HP changed windows 7 style, and i really hate it.

Overall, after i fix the display, i will spend several days to make the computer worth it's price. I still think it's possible, because the hardware is really great. But i would expect, that such computer will be ready to use right after i unpack it.
