HP Pavilion DV4-2160US 14.1-Inch Laptop (Digital Plaid)
I looked for like a month before I bought this laptop (not sure what the difference is from the laptop on this page other than the color scheme).Pros:
14" screen.
It has an impressive amount of features, including the intel i5-430 processor. I've had it less than a week, so we'll see how it holds up.
Fast
No problems with stuck-on pixels.
Nice keyboard. The DV4 has a full sized keyboard with full sized arrow keys. It actually has LEDs next to the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys. The num lock feature almost made me re-install the OS because I didn't realize it was on, and I couldn't log in. I had just used the windows easy transfer, and rebooted, and I was unable to log in. Lessons learned here: make sure you make a password reset disk, and make sure you make a second account just in case your first one gets locked out for some reason. Also burn your DVDs for system restore.
LED backlight for battery conservation.
Looks cool. The volume control and WiFi on/off switch above the keyboard are more of a proximity sensor, and are cool.
Comes with windows 7 home premium.
Wireless works well.
Cons:
The far right corner is dim, about a square centimeter area right in the corner. If I move my head to look directly at it, it's not very dim. You might not even notice unless you move the task bar like I do.
The screen is glossy. All laptops have glossy screens except for a few Dell business laptops. HP might have one too that you can special order.
The hard drive is a little noisy (but I believe any noise is too much), and a little warm. The fan spins constantly, but you can turn it off in the BIOS (it still cycles when it needs to).
Other:
The touchpad seems like it has a lot of friction at first, but it got better, and if I use the tip of my finger with light pressure it glides just fine. The touchpad screen scroll feature works well. Has a button to turn off the touchpad if you don't want to use it.

I searched extensively for about a month before making my decision. For my price range, there was no computer that even came close to the "H.P. DV4 2160us", and i mean no computer. Whether I'm blazing around the Internet, watching or burning DVDs, labeling the DVDs there's power a plenty and it runs cooler than most. A really pleasant surprise was how well the laptop speakers sound. The new Intel processor is noticeably faster than there previous version. All in all, if your looking for a notebook, that does it all, and looks great doing it with a easy to use keyboard, look no further. I highly recommend this model. You won't find a better book for the price of this one. So make sure you check out this model before you make your final decision. This laptop looks good, is powerfull and does meet my requirements for a Win 7 performance. It is the only laptop that I have found, at that price level, that offers Intel I5 processor with 4 GB. Everyone knows that Win 7 requires power and memory. Win 7 performance on this machine is very respectable. I own a powerfull desktop and can hardly see the difference in performance. I did a lot of searching for a laptop and this is what I chose. For price, features and performance, this is a good deal. I found this at a local office store on sale for $650 after a $50 mail in rebate.Pro's:

windows 7 it is amazingly stable. Not a single crash since I bought this laptop 6 weeks ago!

*mute and antenna buttons are also cool and touch sensitive
*great plaid dark brown, almost black look
*removable cd/dvd drive reduces the weight of the computer. Also, may allow for easy blue ray upgrade?
Con's:
*battery life is fair at best. Maybe 2 hours with a full charge.
*unit is a little thicker than some of the more cooler looking thin laptops.
*Cooling vent is on the bottom. This deserves some explanation. First, I looked at this feature before buying and in my opinion, the new laptops with the newer "i" processors seem to run cooler than older models. Also, there is a vent on the top of the computer directly above the bottom vent, to the left where the base and screen are hinged. You can only see the top vent when the unit is open. It seems that when the laptop is on a pillow for example and blocking the bottom vent, the top vent takes over releasing the heat but not quite as well as the bottom when not blocked. At least it seems that way to me.
*the unit does run a bit warm when using on a pillow and I am careful to monitor the temperature since my last computer dies this way.
*hp should have put the vents on the side!
My brother bought a Dell just 2 months before I bought this and he got a pre-i5 processor and g wireless. In comparison, the hp is much better in performance and price.
Highly recommended.
Acer Aspire E1-571-6811 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Black)
This is an update to my review. I loved this item for the first few days but then the screen went black and I could not get it to come up for anything. I don't know if this is a problem with Acer or not but this happened on my older computer also which was an Acer. So now I have to delete everything on this so that I can return it. A huge pain in the rear. If it happens again I will have to buy a different model and will speak my mind about Acer. I also do not like the new Windows 8. It is diffiult to figure out where everything is but I'm sure after working with it for awhile it will become easier. Everything new is hard at first.I just received this yesterday. It was so easy to set up and I am cruising around on it like crazy. My other computer constantly froze and shut down plus the screen didn't work so I had to have a monitor on the side so this one is amazing. I love having a number key on the side and also on the top. It does not get warm at all I love it.
As for the computer itself, it is wonderful. Plenty of processor and RAM for just about any need. Be aware that it does have the trackpad offset to the left due to having a full numbers keypad on the right. This makes typing a bit awkward for anyone who is used to having the trackpad centered. But since Mom had never used a laptop, she didn't know the difference. I was the one who struggled.

The Acer Aspire E1-571-6811 15.6-Inch Laptop is fairly light weight, loaded with Windows 8, and grants free access to the Acer iCloud.Many of the other pre-loaded programs are interesting and convenient, e.g. the news feed. Some are a little confusing to figure out, e.g., the Camera (specifically where the folder is with the pics I've just taken. The folder is, of course, in the Pictures under Library, but the subfolders are by date, which can be a bit confusing when there are a lot of subfolders, and the dates all begin with the year, then the month, then the day).
The Right click sometimes doesn't respond when clicked initially, but may take a couple of pushes to respond. This bothers me greatly. But since I bought the computer online, I'm not about to send it away for diagnosing and repairs when it only gives me trouble intermittently.

The offer was too good to pass up and the difference allowed me to max it up to 8 GB of RAM and get all the software I needed while still saving a bundle.PROS
Excellent contrast and resolution on a 17.3" wide screen.
Lighter than most laptops its size.
Solid construction, superior to most PC-based models.
Quite thin for its size.
Four USB and one HDMI ports, among others.

Comfortable, straightforward spaced-layout keyboard. The Sony silicone membrane is a great addition (not included).

It's not as structurally solid as a Mac

Lenovo IdeaPad G780 21823DU 17.3-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown)
I've only had this for a few days but this seems to be a quality machine. I've owned 6 computers so far, 2 desktops and 3 laptops before this, and this seems to blow them all away. It has a button you can push that will take it back to the original factory settings, the same as the day I received it. Which is fine for me as I always have important things backed up on disks anyway. It is blistering fast and the 17 inch display is excellent. I called tech support the day I received it and was on the phone with someone who spoke english as well as I do in under a minute, who answered everyone of my questions and walked me through everything I needed. This is my first experience with Lenovo and I'm really liking this product and this company.
This is awesome if your pc does not load or you get a problem. Just shut it off press the 1 key button next to the power button and will restore your pc to factorey state. Now you will lose everything but hey if you use have files that are important you should save them to an external drive anyone.
I bought acronis software and that backs up my whole pc but I love this PC
OH one thing I do hate it is a fingerprint magnet.....get ready to wipe it down constantly
Oh, by the way I was successful in upgrading this model to Windows 8 I like Windows 8! The PC boots up faster runs fine. Make sure you run the Windows Upgrade tool but I had no problems. I don't know if my one key recovery will work guess I will have to wait and see. Thanks
Buy Lenovo IdeaPad G780 21823DU 17.3-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown) Now
Recieved the Lenovo IdeaPad G780 21823DU 17.3-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown) in good time, and it was well packaged. Unfortunately the DVD/CD player was not recognized by the Windows 7 operating system. Also the DVD/CD player was not secured in the laptop. Apparently a single screw holds the two together, and it was not installed.Took the computer to an Lenovo authorized repair shop to be repaired under warranty it was only three days old. Two days later we were told Lenovo would not pay for the repair!!!
We did not even ask how much the repair would cost. If Lenovo can't stand by their warranty for even one screw, we were not interested in keeping their computer.
While we had the computer, it performed admirably, the screen was sharp, hooked up to our wireless easily, etc. Just no DVD/CD player.
We returned the defective computer to Amazon, no problem I cannot praise Amazon enough for holding up their end. If you order one we hope you don't get ours. We have since ordered a Dell Inspiron i17R-2105SLV 17-Inch Laptop (Silver). The Dell Inspiron i17R-2105SLV 17-Inch Laptop (Silver) so far has performed flawlessly.

I've had no less then half-a-dozen notebooks in my lifetime. This Lenovo G780 tops them all.It powers up in a flash and has many pre-loaded Lenovo helps. One of the best is the Lenovo Solution Center.
It came with 6GB of ram and I quickly upgraded it to 16GB. I know, specs say only 8GB maximum but not true. The two sticks of 8GB installed like a breeze and was instantly recognized.
The keyboard is large enough to be comfortable/not crowded. Keys have a definite snap to them making them ease to use.
The only quirk I don't like is the touch pad seems to get in the way when it's active...moving the cursor at random if you accidentally brush your thumb across it. Ah! Easily solved by hitting the Function Key and F6 to turn off the pad. Once the machine 'wakes' from sleep, the pad is active again.
I use a wireless mouse however; if you wish to use the touch pad, it operates flawlessly. ..very sensitive, and large enough to have full the range of control.
Getting inside the machine to replace or upgrade is a snap. One panel exposes most of the 'workings', no more "This little panel here or this little panel there"
That lovely 17inch screen is near HD quality. I watch movies a lot and with a set of Bose headsets, it's better than being at the theater.
This is one of the best. Buy it and you won't have any regrets.

The description provided by Amazon is very scant, however the manufacturer model number (2516AEU) can be browsed in Lenovo webpage for a full description. Please note that the installed RAM is 1 x 2 GB instead of the 3 GB originally indicated in the Amazon description (now corrected), however, Lenovo webpage provides the right specifications. This particular model has everything I was looking for, except the fingerprint reader. Other than that this is a great laptop and its construction quality cannot be disputed. The laptop is not light, specially with the 9 cell battery it comes with, but feels very solid and ready to work anywhere. If you are a Lenovo or Thinkpad former user (as I am) you will NOT be dissapointed, this is a great laptop at a fantastic price.UPDATE (October 17th) Over the weekend I discovered that the bluetooth module is not working. I already tried to uninstall it and install it again, also reloaded the driver but no success. I still have to chat with Lenovo technicians on Monday to solve the problem (no way!!! worst customer service).
UPDATE (October 22nd) This laptop has a physical switch to turn on/off the wireless radios, but it also has a utility to allow user to switch on/off bluetooth and wireless network radios independently. My bluetooth radio was simply turned off, easily solved but took me several days to discover. Now, the Power Management can be annoying since it can turn off several devices, but it is a configuration issue. Very happy with this machine.
WARNING (November 8th) I purchase this laptop directly from Amazon LLC and got a great product. For a reason I don't understand the picture was changed for the picture of a different laptop (a Thinkpad Edge instead of a T410), so be careful if you order it because NOW there is a conflict between the description/specs and the picture. Also the seller is not Amazon LLC anymore but a different vendor.

Comes with boatload of Lenovo software. In someways enhances Win7 but in someways it cripples it. Idle memory usage right after starting first few times was around 2GB
The camera is very narrow view.
Is still ugly
Multi-touch touchpad is tricky and not responsive at times. Needs better drivers.
Dynamic contrast control has some bug. On battery the screen would sometimes dim for few seconds. Fixed it by running all power options in full performance mode.
Overall impression:
Happy so far with the performance and value. Highly recommended for someone looking for best of size and power. There is some getting used to the keyboard though.

I bought a Dell E3400 and found the fan noise was too loud and didn't like the 16:9 screen, I returned it and got a Fijitsu 12.1 tablet instead and found the screen is too small for me and then I returned it. At last, found a good deal of T410 and bought one. Can't be happier. The build quality is good and much much better than E3400, a perfect all purpose laptop. I ordered 1280x800 rather than 1440x900, I think I made the right choice, 1440x900 on a 14" screen will make things too small to view. The fan noise is good, it's not completely quite but you can bearly hear anything especially when it's running on baterry. The littel LED lamp beside the camera makes the thing even better. The DVD drive vibrates a lot when running high speed, I dont' use DVD very often so don't mind it, if someone uses DVD a lot, should consider this.Save 27% Off

I work with a lot of teenagers and see what is fast, efficient or not regarding electronics. After spending a long time, probably a year, contemplating what kind of device would suit me best, I have rejected smartphones (why squint and suffer with a tiny screen plus expensive data plans) as well as Apple products because from what I see with Apple, the device is just the down payment. Every app costs! Then there are the weird connectors that are not always easy to come by, plus connectivity issues. This little notebook uses wifi and no extra charges to connect using my home network. The only tiny thing I did not particularly like was that it came with Windows 7 starter so I had to install the full version later. But, having done that, it works like a charm and is as light as a paperback book in my bag. The spec that says it is 8lbs is just plain wrong. It is about 1.5 lbs if that. The screen is bright and clear with very good color, 3 USB ports, SD card slot and came with a power adapter. Definitely value for money. My other Acer laptop which is nearly 6 yrs old still works like a charm also, just a little too heavy for the frequent travel that I do.

the used i book we purchased was a great bargain. we are VERY satisfied with our purchase.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.This computer is my new best friend. You don't even understand :o I've always been a Mac person but thought they'd be too expensive. When I learned about the iBook I thought it'd be old and obsolete, but it is not whatsoever.I needed a notebook for college this semester that wasn't too expensive and can last a long time. What really sold me about this thing was the fact macs last years longer than PCs and they don't get pc viruses. I have had this for months and it works great!

The laptop is really nice. Everything as promised. Very quiet. A bit heavy, but I dont't carry it much and if I do it doesn't matter. Windows Vista is not really faster then XP :-( nor is it better.All in all a good choice.

Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 Laptop (2.30-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive)
I've had this computer for almost three years. About two years into it it developed the heating issue that others have complained about it began shutting down at unpredictable intervals; usually when I had the CPU running at full capacity. I did some research and discovered that the problem was dust. Namely poor cooling design causes the computer to take dust inside and over time it makes it hard for the computer to release heat properly. I took it to a computing center and got them to open it up and clear out the dust I'd long since been off warranty.I also went out and dropped 20 dollars on an extrernal antec laptop fan. It's the kind of fan that you sit your computer on and it operates more silently than the toshiba fan. Together with a regular vaccuming of the actual laptop fan to suck out any dust I haven't had a problem since then. I'm going to take it in again in a month or two to get the dust cleared out BEFORE I start having problems again.
So I know what you're thinking...why the 4 stars? I paid less than 1200 bucks for this machine. A dell machine of similar price would be falling apart in many, many, more critical ways (I should know I used to work in a computer lab), and compaq's/hps are infinitely worse machines. It's speedy, I've had absolutely no connectivity problems with the wifi (I've used over a dozen different wifi connections and I often have a stronger connection than my friends), ditto with the LAN...I've used the modem precisely once so I can't comment on that.
I've put a total of 70 dollars worth of service into this machine. You put way more money into a car to maintain it. A computer is a complicated piece of machinery...I don't understand people who think that they can buy it and not have to do anything to allow it to keep operating in peak condition.
Does this computer have it's flaws? Yes. But for it's price it's a good value. I wouldn't buy a Honda and expect a Mercedes.

I've had my AS35-S159 for close to 8 years with almost no problems. I did encounter the overheating issue at some point and all it required was vacuuming off some of the dust and cat hair trapped in the cooling unit. My wife went through 2 laptops (HP, DELL) during the same time.What sets this laptop apart is stability, I can have 3-4 programs running at once and it never crashes. I will definitely stick with Toshiba for my next laptop whenever that may be.I bought this computer about a year ago and like one of the previous owners, I had a problem with it shutting down for no reason. I found after sending it out to get serviced that the CPU fan went bad and when it overheated, it shut down. I like the keyboard feel and the display is good in comparision to my older Toshiba laptop. I wish that it had more USB ports and expansion, but the ability to load it up with 2 gig of ram is a plus. The battery life is good too.

Bought mine through a major computer retailer (now selling on-line only)over 5 years ago and couldn't be any happier with my Toshiba A-35.Not a speed demon, but solid and dependible.
The overheating issues have been grossly over stated by a few noisy users. A little care and proper handling/storage and use of this little box and it is happy to perform.
I'm writing this as a testament to Toshiba's quality and reliability. The A-35 is no longer available but Toshiba still continues to make the soundest, best built and nost dependible laptops. Period.
I worked at Microsoft for 4 years, and when I was ready to buy a laptop, I asked around. Engineers, technicians, developers, Program Managers unanimously told me to 'Buy a Toshiba!'. So I did. Good advice.
Toshiba has listened to the marketplace and added more USB ports to subsequent models. The touchpad has improved.
Buy on price point if you dare, but you can't go wrong forking over a few more bones to buy Toshiba's solid dependibility.
HP Pavilion g6-2010nr 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
This is a wonderful lap top for the money. Fast, nice screen resolution, clear, and the keypad is very accessible. Bought this for my 86 year old Dad and he loves it. This would make a wonderful lap top for someone going to school. as it is not that heavy. Great value for the money.

I bought this laptop at a local Micro Center. This thing is amazing!!! i paid $399.99 plus taxes and a 2 year accidental warranty it came out to a total of $575.00. let me make this clear to you..i am a Techie, i love technology, and i like to be up-to-date with lots of things, Computers and laptops Being among them, let me put it to you like this. The best computers on the market Have " intel core i7 processors" those are quad-core computers and usually have at least 6 gigabytes of ram and 500 gigabytes of harddrive space. This computer, the HP Pavilion g6-2010nr Notebook PC can definitely compete with that. let me show you pros.PROS:
1) intel i3 processor at 2.3 ghtz
2)above average size screen, not big, but definitely not small a 15.6 inches.
3) long battery life ive had it working on battery for over 5 1/2 hours.
4) Altec Lansing Speakers for loud, and clear sound.
5) 4 gigabytes of ram with just facebooking, school work or alot of other things 4 gigabytes is all you need. but you can also add 4 gigabytes of ram to this laptop. making it an 8 gigabyte monster. (which is what I am going to do soon)
6) 640 gigabyte hard drive!!! way above average. alot of laptops still come with a 280 or 320 gigabyte hard drive. making this one amazing.
7) Comes with windows 7. wich is very stable and well designed.
8) HDMI port, to connect to a tv for slideshows movies and other awesome things.
9) High Resolution Screen. running at 1366x768. its great for youtube, or movies.
10) Great camera. comes with lots of cool built in features mom's will love to use. This laptop EVEN COMES WITH FLASH for pictures. not a whole lot of laptops come with flash, usually just $800 and up laptops.
11) very light weight. less than 6 pounds.
12) usb speed 3.0 the newest and fastest speed. making file transfers faster than before.
13) Comes with 2 usb slots, a memory card slot a headphone slot9(3.5mm universal size in all laptops)
14) DOESNT GET HOT!!! cool to the touch! even after 4 or 5 hours of use, due to new hp cooling technology, typing on you lap is now MORE COMFORTABLE!!!
CONS:
1)this laptop still comes with a DVD player i really dont care since i usually dont watch movies on my laptop, i mean come on, why do we have t.v.'s?
Newer and more expensive computers usually have
intel i7 proccesors
6 gigabytes of ram
720 gigabytes of harddrive
and bluray players. but if you want that, expect to pay well over $800
Bottom Line: I highly recommend this laptop to anyone in need of one, but on a budget. HP is American and one of the highest rated laptop and desktop companies today. HP was so awesome that when i opened my box, i got a free 60 day anti-virus software FOR FREE!!!! HP has amazed me. hopefully it amazes you as well.

I will keep my review concise:Pros:
-Price. You cannot beat the price for such a large laptop with decent memory
-General usability. It's pretty much set up out of the box
Cons:
-The track pad. I cannot stand the track pad. It has an extremely steep learning curve, thus making me having to consciously think how to do something with it. To scroll down a page you use two fingers and swipe them down or up. Easy enough, right? Well, no, it's not. Sometimes the cursor doesn't move. Most of the time, it does move, but so fast it is as if your grab the scroll bar on the right side of the page and move it up or down as fast as you can. It is ridiculous. Same for moving horizontally, though that isn't needed as often.
I have a Macbook, as well. And while it has its own faults, the track pad on it is golden.
-Lots of bloatware on this machine. I had to delete quite a bit.
I'd be hard pressed to recommend this product.

This is a reasonably fully-featured laptop computer, mostly suitable as a desktop replacement, at a budget price. If having an optical (CD/DVD±RW) drive is a must for you, this is one of the least-expensive options. Speakers sound pretty good for the size, and WOW can they go loud!The biggest problem, as others have mentioned, is the track pad, which is difficult to use. Scrolling (vertical or horizontal) uses a two-finger swipe. Sometimes this doesn't work at all. Sometimes it goes very slow. Sometimes it goes very fast. Sometimes it mistakes a swipe for a pinch (adjusting the zoom). Single-finger scrolling on the edge (right edge for vertical, bottom edge for horizontal) worked much better. And frankly, the track pad pinch-to-zoom is just stupid. It's a laptop computer, not a phone; if I want to adjust zoom I can do that via menu. If you get this laptop, you'll probably want to use a mouse.
I'm also fairly concerned about heat generated by the processor. Running even an older game (e.g. Sid Meiers Civilization IV: The Complete Edition [Download], which is 4+ years old) causes the fan to immediately kick on, and within 30 seconds it revs up to full-speed. It's a brand-new machine, so there should be no issue with any dust or other blockage, and this happens even with the computer sitting on a flat surface with the fan completely clear, in a 63-degree room. I don't know if this is an issue with the CPU, the GPU, the heat sink, or something else, but it's got me a bit concerned. However, this problem does not show up when playing music, watching video online (e.g., YouTube or Hulu), or doing other work, only when playing games.
Update (12/26/12): Downgraded by 1 star for poor customer service. On 12/21/12, "Scott B., Hewlett Packard Company, Executive Customer Relations" left a comment on this review inviting me to email him "...to discuss this issue...further". The same day, I emailed him, as invited. Today, 12/26/12, I received a response, in the form of what appears to be a form letter email, saying: "Thank you for your feedback. Hewlett-Packard always appreciates input from its customers. Your concerns and comments will assist us as we make future product decisions. We apologize for any problems or inconveniences this may have caused you. If you need technical assistance, please contact HP Technical Support at: 1-800-474-6836 (Please have your Product/Serial number when calling)"
Don't invite your customers to "discuss" their concerns with you and then throw a form letter back at them when they seek to take you up on the offer!

I bought this laptop in December 2012 and took it on an overseas trip. It regularly and predictably crashed with the blue screen of death after about 30 minutes. With reboot I got 30 more minutes of work done. When I came back I wasted hours with HP tech support. Finally I sent it in for repair. It came back with a new disk, motherboard, battery and a new video card with no drivers. After installing the drivers the video card works. But now the screen "flickers" and allows keyboard input only randomly. Windows update does not work. I sent it back for repairs yesterday. Will keep you posted on this saga.
HP reps laughed at me and suggested I solder the computer back together.
Look it up, HP has lost AT LEAST THREE LAWSUITS for premature failure due to video card heat. They have not changed their ways. HP reps thought it was funny that the public doesn't know this yet.
If you buy a decent video card, your HP laptop WILL CRASH IN 20 MINUTES of video, with loss of data, singeing and property damage to the tabletop.
Mine sat on a 1" thick oak table, which it cracked twice due to extreme heat cycling. Plastic on the bottom softened into the singed cracks.
Buying a $60 cooling tray extends video runtime before data-loss and crash to almost 30 minutes, but God help you if you take it off the cradle, or put it on your lap. 150 degrees F, second-degree burns, furniture damage, battery explosion risk, all due to completely unmanaged heat.
Educate yourself about this company's lawsuit history and -80% recent stock price trajectory before buying anything HP! Used to be a great institution, but has been looted.I bought this for my wife to use for her schooling and she loves it. I wish it had a little better screen resolution, but other than that its pretty fast and can handle everything she uses it for at school.I loved this for what I needed. I personally think everything about this laptop is flawless. I have owned the asus ultrabook and an ipad and several asus tablets like the transformer 300 and such in the past. This laptop is a combination of all the great things of the 3 devices about with only 2 cons (battery life and a bit on the heavy side) in my opinion.I spend every waking moment on a laptop for work, and pleasure. This thing goes with me everywhere. Its a little heavier than the ipad but it blows it out of the water in so many other respects.
First off, let me tell you, the only reason I am comparing this device to an ipad is becuase it has an excellent touch screen functionality that has allowed me to work on it full time using only the touch screen. I have had tablets in the past, and (besides the ipad) they have never been able to function for me smooth enough without frustration.
But i digress, here are the pros and cons
Pros: Speed (fastest processor currently available)
Functionality (full windows 8 platform can run any program smoothly, even games)
Touch (smooth and silky and responsive, pen is good for precision if you have too fat fingers for the high resolution
Sound quality (outstanding stereo hands down better than any of the other 3 devices i mentioned)
cons: heavy and battery life 3 hours only without extra battery
Pros: Size, cool factor, 8gb Ram, 256GB SSD, built in HDMI output, beautiful screen, I can use it as a tablet when I feel like it and use it to do actual work. The best part? REAL WINDOWS! I'm not locked into anyone's "App store" anymore.
Cons: the keyboard takes some getting used to. I wish it had a DVI out for using my monitor at full 2550 x 1600 Resolution instead of the limitations of HDMI and VGA.I have seen some bad reviews throughout the internet on this computer...BUT I don't understand why. I think it is a great product. I use it everyday and love it!I just got this a few days ago after much research and trying to decide between it and the Lenovo Yoga and couldn't be happier with the choice. I got the extra battery and can go for days between charges (although I'm not a serious gamer and only use it a few hours a day mostly for business) unlike my HP with less than 1 1/2 hour battery life. I set it up to use my Microsoft presenter/mouse, but with the digitizer stylus and optical sensor, I haven't had to use the mouse yet...and may never have to. And I'm using the stylus much more than I thought.
It's amazing how little things make a big difference. With this device, you just take it out of its case or whatever, turn it on and start using it. If you need the keyboard (and I use that less than I expected so far), just pop up the screen. With the Lenovo, you have to first open it, turn it all the way around if you want to use it as a tablet, turn it on, and then use it. Those extra steps are just a pain.
Windows 8 does take some getting used to, but I haven't found anything I don't like about it once I figure out how to use the various features. And there is a lack of documentation on how to use the apps, e.g., Note Anywhere looks like a great product, but learning it is trial & error.
Another big plus is the connectivity. I do a lot of PowerPoint presentations, often using clients' projectors...which "all" have a VGA connector. With the Duo, I don't have to carry a VGA adapter dongle just plug it in. Ditto with the full size HDMI port and SD slot.
My HP laptop is now my "desktop computer" and one of the issues I've been wresting with is how to sync the two since they both run Windows & Microsoft Office. Files can be handled by putting them in the cloud, but email & calendars in Outlook were a problem. After much research (again), I decided to go with Office 365 on both computers (and on my Windows phone which I'll get whenever a good one comes out) it's working flawlessly so far.
Amazingly, this computer is rated at about 3 stars by professional reviewers and a solid 5 stars by users/owners go figure.
More to follow as I get more into it.This is a really good laptop. It is a laptop, not a tablet, although there are certainly times the tablet functionality is rather handy. As a laptop, it is great. Very fast, in all respects. The high resolution screen allows a great deal of information to be on the screen at once (eg excel columns) even thought it is a relatively small screen. So you have the best of all worlds, a small device, with a very useful screen for doing real work. Once you are used to the mouse mechanism, it works as good as any track pad (although, like every laptop I have owned for 10 years, I keep a wireless mouse handy for when I am at a table or desk). The small keyboard is NOT too small, you can type on it as well as any other keyboard, and I have big hands.
I really, really like it.

At the apple store website...on the bottom left side of the page under special deals click on refurbished mac...they are selling it for $1439+tax and you can get a full 3 year applecare warranty too. I am very satisfied with my macbook air that was shipped to me... it is brand new! no blemishes of any kind. The battery has lasted upto 9 hours! Overall excellent product.

Acer Aspire V5-471P-6498 14-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)
The laptop is pretty decent. Backlit keyboard is cool but feels a little delicate..not a big deal though. Had issues with the wifi connection dropping randomly but uninstalled the driver and installed newer driver from Acer's website (Please see that if you check the driver already installed it says the driver is up to date. But there is another latest driver on Acer website. So you will need to manually uninstall the current driver and install the newer driver). No more issues with the wifi dropping so far. Got a nice deal from Amazon. The speakers are great. Need to get used to Windows 8. Touchscreen is nice. The battery lasts about 4-4.5 hrs. Laptop is sleek and looks fancy. Touchpad is not upto the mark, but again that's not a deal breaker. Some people complained of fan noise on similar model series, but it was minimal and unnoticeable. Will definitely recommend this laptop.
Cons: Difficult to find a fitted case for it, really slow with office products, slow in loading programs, battery life, difficult to connect to the internet
Issues: Sometimes it will start scrolling down on it's own and it won't stop until I press Ctrl Atl Del. A few times the keyboard wouldn't work and I'd have to use the touch screen, after using it for a month the H button no longer lights up.
It's a really nice laptop. I think I would like it even better had I not gotten Windows 8.The laptop has a few glitches. It might just be mine so I'm going to send it back to see if they can fix it.

Everything is great with Acer except with Wi-Fi it continues to lose contact and I have no problem with any other device I have (iPod touch roku and kindle fire) Those that complain about windows 8 I can't understand it gives a great touch experience I will call Acer about Wi-Fi and hope they can correct this then I would give another star maybe two.Went to Acer website and downloaded driver update. No problems at all and have been on Internet for hours. With that solved I can honestly say this is better than my Asus all in one with Windows 7.
