Generally speaking, it wasn't too bad. I'm sure the 4GB of RAM, no paging file, and a clean install of Windows really helped out. However, this system gets bogged down entirely too easily. The latest drivers all around, latest flash, etc... flash video playback was practically nonexistent. Local HD video playback was equally poor. And even simple multitasking would cause the system to shutter and freeze momentarily until it had time to catch up.
Now, I know this isn't meant to be a powerhouse. It's basically a netbook in a 15.6" case. However, let me bring my previous netbook back. I have a Dell Mini 9 running Windows 7, 2GB RAM, and a generic 16GB SSD. While this lil system will get bogged down frequently, it seems to play back most flash-based videos tremendously more smoothly than the much newer E-240/HD 6310. This completely baffles me and honestly sickens me that even the latest low-end processors from AMD are essentially the same performance as Intels Atom's from a couple generations back.
OK, well I got a bit off topic there regarding the CPU. A bit more with regards to the laptop itself. All in all, the case and materials aren't too bad. Plastics do have a cheaper feel to them, but I find many current Toshiba's share the same plastics... Over-all build quality isn't bad though. Everything seems to fit together nicely. Being such a simple laptop, there's not a whole lot to creek or be wrong.
Audio and video are fine. The screen is your standard 15.6" as most any laptop shares now of days (it's already been removed and placed in a Dell N5030 :P) Speakers are fine too. Not your high-end harman kardon you find on some previous models, but decent sounding for what they are. However, there is NO WEBCAM... Here I thought all laptops had webcams today! HAH!
Battery life is quite good. Being a netbook underneath, expect similar battery life. I've gotten 4 hours quite easily out of this laptop under basic usage (casual surfing, occasional video, lots of chatting online). Also remember this laptop was used before I got my hands on it!
And finally, heat. I find this quite disappointing. The fan runs constantly. While the laptop itself doesn't heat up too much (to the touch) the CPU runs way too hot in my books. Everything I see points it runs at about 55*C to 75*C depending on what's being done. Max temp for the chip is 90*C. I confirmed the fan was fine, no obstructions/dust, even repasted the heatsink (which helped a little)... But still, much hotter than I should be running and I suspect it'll be the death of these.
So in short, stay away from this laptop. Spend a little more and at least get the duel core model. Or heck, as much as I discourage used computers, a nice used laptop would be substantially better for the price!

HP Pavilion DV6-1354US 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premi

I have a five year old HP laptop running XP and it is still going strong. Despite outsourced Indian phone support, I was able to communicate support issues effectively. I am confident in future hardware performance and support from HP.
Transition from XP to Windows 7 was intuitive. The new taskbar is my favorite improvement. Followed by much better graphic interface and widgets. Some of my XP software causes Windows 7 to turn off Aero mode. I feel that windows has caught up with Apple in terms of graphics and workflow.
As far as laptop is concerned, Dave from Portland has a great review comparing the different models available on Amazon. The DV6-1354US is sufficient for me to use Adobe Photoshop and Audition, as well as multitask.
I will never go to a laptop again without a numeric keypad, this was an unexpected plus. I do miss the old HP media controls above the keyboard. They are replaced now by a volume and wireless control. I like that they are no longer buttons but touch sensitive surfaces above the keyboard.
The DV6 is quieter and cooler than my old HP. The power cord is beefier, which was always a problem with my old HP. Although I would prefer a magnetic power cord like Apple offers. Compared to other manufacturers, I would have to say that HP has the best price for great, reliable hardware.
Everything is a wonderful improvement except for the sound. Frequently, friends would ask where the music was coming from when I used my old DV1000. I felt that the sound was very rich for such a small system. I find the DV6 to have a much shallower, smaller sound that finds trouble filling a bedroom. For this reason, I drop the DV6 to four stars.
Also, the DV6 doesn't come with recovery disks. You need 3 DVD+R or -R (not RW) disks to create your own.
Overall, I really enjoy this computer, and probably will continue to enjoy it for another 5 to 7 years until RAM is in petabytes and laptops cook dinners. If I had to do it again I would still choose it over an Acer, Asus, Dell, Mac, or Sony.I love technology and at a reasonable price is even better. This is the first Non Dell I have bought in over a decade. I had not been wowed by the last few I had for work.
The reviews on this style of HP were good. Friends and colleagues at other companies were happy with theirs. I ordered this for my wife. I received it a month ago and am using the multimedia stuff, the lightscribe CD/DVD burner etc. All very simple. Windows 7 seems very solid. The 4 Meg of RAM moves it along quickly. The N wireless card is fast and furious on the N+ Router (Belkin). we are doing Amazon movie on demand and no delays. Keyboard feels good, has built in number pad, nice. However the keys do get lost in w very low lighting. Maybe back-lighting the keys or iridium down the road?
So for the first month anyhow, very happy with it.I have got this HP notebook due to the software I need to use. I usually use Mac and like its stability and smoothness. When I used windows (it was windows Me and XP) years ago, it was not really a good experience... But this time is different. Windows 7 works solid and reliable. The machine is fast enough for its price, and I was surprised how light it weighs. If you carry your computer around, this is nice. You cannot complain about this machine since it deserves credit for its functionality, reliability and the price cost. For average user like me, this is good.
Only annoying thing is you have to make your own recovery disks (3 dvd blank disks you have to prepare). There is no os disk so this is important to do. It does not matter except for waiting a long time to burn those 3 dvd disks...Buyer beware. Yes they do look shiny and nice. Yes the specs look very impressive. Awesome price too. But the build quality is complete garbage. My well cared for 1.5 yr old HP laptop has died because it runs way to hot and eventually the motherboard got fried. This is a known issue in many models. Don't trust any. No support from HP. "Total Care" ya right. Don't take my word for it, do as the other people have posted..Google HP problems and you'll see. Also check out their HP community support page laptops then hardware section and see all the happy customers there too. Don't make the same mistake I did. Buy some other brand.Well, I tend to whisper mean things and curse my computer on a daily basis, but I haven't felt the need to do that with this one. It's quick enough with lots of storage and with a good amount of quality programs already loaded. I like how the computer manages its own health and happiness issues and it regularly reminds me to backup my files. The computer handles the large graphing programs I use with out the long pauses I have experienced previously. My one complaint is the screen shape. It has a short-wide screen. The short is the problem for me; with most programs having large tool bars at the top and or bottom of the screen a short screen creates a smaller workable space, however movies look great on it and the resolution is good even when viewed at angle. I know I could have sprung for the DV7 with the 17.3" screen rather than the cheaper 15.6" but the extra screen size added an addition 4 pounds (ouch)!

I tried, I really did try to keep my HP Pavilion dv9000 Series laptop alive and kicking, but to no avail. First, sometime last year, the wireless card quit; that was overcome by purchasing a Cisco Wireless-G adapter. That worked for a while until I started to run out of hard drive space. I resolved that issue by purchasing a new 500GB hard drive. Then the 17.3" display started turning green; no resolution there I'm afraid.
So I started casting about for a replacement laptop computer. HP was out; I'd had two HP's end up with malfunctioning wireless NIC's, and the last one didn't turn out too well. So I went in another direction. I have had fairly good success with Dell laptops at work, so I decided to purchase a Dell for personal use. I dismissed the Inspiron series because I wanted to go with the new Intel i5 series processor, so I choose the Dell Studio 1749 with an Intel Quad-Core i5-430M 2.27GHz processor.
The Laptop
The desktop-replacement class 17.3" widescreen 8.4lbs Dell Studio 1749 comes very close to being a full-fledged, full-feathered, multimedia desktop replacement albeit with a smaller screen and limited USB (3) ports. The sleek unit houses a 2.27GHz Intel Quad-Core i5-430M Processor (with Intel Turbo Boost Technology) with 3MB SmartCache on a 1066MHz FSB. The large footprint Dell Studio 1749 has only (3) USB 2.0 ports, rather limited especially for a laptop of this size, but the unit has plenty of multimedia ports that sort of make up for oversight including an HDMI port.
The 17.3-inch WXGA LED widescreen display with built-in webcam is the stock display with this laptop. With a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 this brilliant display offers full HD with 32-bit color and a 60Hz refresh rate. At the maximum resolution a lot can fit on the screen, enough space to fit to application screens side-by-side, which is what I demand. The icons are just the right size, as is the text. The Intel Graphic Media Accelerator HD card ships with 256MB of VRAM and highly configurable software.
My Dell Studio 1749 shipped with w 7200rpm 500GB SATA II hard drive, which is plenty of space--for now--but there is room to add another SATA 2.5" drive into the chassis underneath the unit. Additionally, my Dell Studio 1749 shipped with 4GB DDR3 RAM @ 1066MHz, plenty of memory to run Windows 7 comfortably, but the Dell Studio 1749 can take up to 8GB of RAM. A fixed slot-fed media bay can be configured with a DVD-ROM, CDRW/DVD, DVD +/-RW; I choose a standard DVD +/-RW drive. I skipped the modem--who uses those anymore--but got a 100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet network interface adaptor, wireless-N adapter, and 1394 Firewire port.
I made sure I ordered the Dell Studio 1749 with a full featured back-lit keyboard, which is complemented by a large touch pad; and corresponding sets of mouse buttons. The feel of the keyboards' keys is rather soft. I prefer the feel of the IBM keyboards of old, but typing is not uncomfortable and feels good on the fingers. The back-lit keys are just bright enough and turn off when the keyboard has not been used for a while.
The speakers on this multimedia-themed laptop are fantastic. The unit ships with a JBL SRS Premium Sound system complete with a small sub-woofer on the bottom of the unit. The sound reproduced through this sound system is unlike any I have heard on other laptops. There is actually a discernable mid-range and bass!
As is the norm with modern laptops all of the ports are along the sides of the Dell Studio 1749. There is nothing on the backside of this wide laptop but a large cooling vent. The white-led power button has been move to the right of the laptop on the screen hinge. Next to it is the A/C power port, and moving forward we have a USB port, slot-fed DVD drive, another USB port, 8-n-1 media card reader and finally a 1394a Firewire port.
Along the left side of the Dell Studio 1749 starting at the front, you will find (2) headphone jack, a microphone jack, ExpressCard slot, Antenna In port (for use with a TV Tuner card), eSATA/ USB combo connector w/USB powershare, HDMI port, DisplayPort connector, VGA port, and finally a 100/1000 NIC adapter port.
Heat & Noise
Dell designed the Dell Studio 1749 to optimize heat dissipation; after all i5 processors run seriously hot. In addition to the aforementioned large exhaust vent on the back of the unit, there are various vents cut into the bottom of the unit as well as an exhaust fan that sits in a bay at the bottom left hand side of the unit.
When the unit does heat up sufficiently the lone fan kicks in at about 2800rpm up to a peak spin cycle of about 3900rpm. Going about everyday tasks like using a word processor or surfing the Internet will not set the fan to spinning, but watching a DVD can create enough heat to trigger the fan in low speed, which is still almost inaudible. If low speed proves insufficient, the fan will start spinning at around 3900rpm. At this level of rotation, you'll notice the fan is on, but the noise level remains bearable.
Conclusion
I am very happy--so far--with my choice of the Dell Studio 1749. The laptop is a performance winner, especially when mated with Windows 7 Enterprise Edition. I like the increased processing power, increased storage, and increased memory this unit brings to the table.
And the laptop is handsome to look at; I got it in red! Though I doubt I will ever have cause to use the 4-pin Firewire port, it is nice to know it's there just in case, and (3) USB ports has certainly come in handy, though seriously there are (3) too few.2 negative issues
1) I can't know if I am in upper case or lower case. Really complicated when you are typing a password
2)the function keys, have to be clicked with the FN . If you use excel a lot, and F2 is common, you will hate that you need to click FN. The worst part is that if you didnt click FN, you are disconnecting internet.
I wonder how can I prevent these kind of issues on my next purchaseMy Dell Studio configuration is similar to Vincent Martin's Studio (other review). The differences are more ram (8GB) and different wireless card (Dell 5620).
PRO'S
Screen size, back light, like having a portable desktop.
CON'S
Not enough USB ports (2 plus one that is part USB/SATA)which sometimes will recognize a USB device but other times, it will not. I use USB hubs but one of the ports has failed and the other is failing. Since all of the ports are plugged to the motherboard and there are no slots to add USB ports the laptop will become severely limited when all of the ports fail.
Connecting to the internet is slow. This problem began to crop up when the laptop was about one year old and has become worst with time. Laptop was purchased 5/16/2010. Despite using a wifi extender, wireless connection never goes higher than two bars when it used to always hit five bars. It has become almost useless as a wireless computer and recently have begun using cat6 to access the internet.
Considering laptop has 8GB, Intel I5 processors, and 500GB hard drive, it's internet speed is slow. Software programs are used monthly to clean files and registry, and defrag the hard drive.
In the last six months, freezing and boot problems have become more frequent despite using Kaspersky Pure, spyware, and malware software to ensure laptop is not being invaded by rogue software.
A major complaint about the laptop is the price (Dell's price was between 800-2,000, depending on configuration)considering the obvious problems with the laptop and Dell's attitude that once it was out the door, it was the buyer's problem.
Dell has discontinued this laptop (sometime in 2011) because of some of the above mentioned problems along with problems. The most common mentioned problem on internet sites is slowness. There are a lot of complaints similar to mine, on the internet, but no apparent smoking gun. My opinion is the wireless card is the source of the problems with a secondary issue being it run hotter than most computers.
I have worked on another Studio laptop for a friend that has 2GB of memory that has become so slow, it is impossible to view video material or scan the internet. Apparently, there is something wrong with the laptop that high speed processors and large doses of memory cannot solve. I also own a Dell Inspiron 500 with one-half the configuration power (Intel I2 processors, 2GB Memory) that is much faster than the Studio laptop.
I would not recommend this laptop to anyone, even at an EBAY price, and this is from someone that has purchased over 20 Dell computers over the past 10-12 years.

This laptop successfully does everything I need it to do:
Video Chat on GChat
Stream Breaking Bad from NetFlix
Play BluRay Quality movies on my 46" Television (via HDMI)
The main tradeoff is that it's huge. So, It's ridiculous to take anywhere outside your home. But, the plus side of its size is the high resolution. So, you have enough room on your screen to have two windows split the foreground.
Compared to the most popular computer in the market, the 13" Macbook Pro:
Same CPU
6GB vs. 4GB (Memory)
640GB vs. 500 GB (Disk)
17.3" vs. 13.3" (Screen)
1600x900 vs 1280x800 (Resolution)
Same Resolution Webcam
$729.99 vs. $1,199.99 (Price without discounts)
It meets or beats all of the main specs of the best-selling MacBook Pro, which serves as a good benchmark for a standard computer these days, does everything an average computer user uses a computer for, and you can get it for $615 to $729 depending on whether you go to school or not.

This computer also is lacking a TPM chip which makes it a lot harder to encrypt the hard drive using the BitLocker software included in Windows 8. Without the TPM chip, encryption and decryption is slower, and you have to hack the registry and use an external memory card or jump drive to store the keys, which can be lost, forcing a total erasure of the hard drive to use the computer.
This particular i7 processor is not the most powerful either. Because it has quad cores and a turbo mode, you would expect it to power through any frozen screen moments. But it doesn't seem to work that way. My experience includes the computer freezing several times a day, usually when I am doing nothing more than web browsing. The 64 bit Windows 8 doesn't seem to help much with that, either.
Also, if you are expecting a backlit keyboard that is frequently advertised for the 17R, it is not included on this model. The mouse pad does not work particularly well with Windows 8 and does not seem to support gestures. It also has the common problem of most mouse pads, it causes the cursor to jump all over the place when you are trying to type, frequently causing whole blocks of text to be selected and replaced by what you are typing, or to jump into other programs entirely. Most of the time I use an external keyboard and mouse. Hours spent adjusting settings have been futile.
The display is quite nice, but nothing spectacular, and at 3.3 pounds it is a heavy laptop that is too large to fit into most carrying cases.
It does support a second drive that can be used for a solid state drive that may shorten boot times and increase speed. The battery is OK, generally lasting about 3 hours when not plugged in.

So, that's my short version of this laptop. O, also like the finish on the outside over the slick black of my older 4510s that shows every fingerprint.
PS>i bought an open box one and was worried a bit but see no issues with it.

The red pointer in the middle of the keyboard is extremely helpful! I don't think I will ever use the regular mouse-pad.
This laptop comes with a Intel i5 processor, 500 GB of hard disk and 4 GB of Memory; perfect specifications for my daily use.
What I really liked about this laptop also is how quiet it is! You hear no noise at all. The fan seems totally mute! The laptop does not get hot at all even after many many hours of usage!
Lenovo is surely a great company who knows how to manufacture laptops that will last for long times. Their ThinkPad line of laptops in my opinion is the best.
If you are looking to buy a laptop with a decent price, I recommend this one. This is the one! I spent a lot of time researching a replacement for my 4 year old 17" Toshiba Satellite. I was impressed with a colleague's ThinkPad that I used a couple weeks ago and decided to look for a Lenovo rather than what would have been my third Toshiba. What made this particular E520 stand out was its Intel Core i5 processor and low price. There are many E520s with the Core i3 processor and also many E525s with AMD's Fusion processor for slightly lower prices, but they are both entry level entry level processors. I probably don't need the extra processing capability of the i5 but it is nice to know that it is there and I always try to buy things that are slightly better than middle of the road.
The 4GB of RAM is plenty, but a 4GB upgrade was only about $20.00, so I went ahead and ordered to max out the system. Windows 7 Professional, Bluetooth, and the fingerprint reader are nice extras that you won't likely elsewhere for the sub-$600 price tag.
Amazon Marketplace's partner Abe's of Maine exceeded my expectations by promptly shipping my order, I received it one day ahead of Amazon's earliest delivery estimate.

Being a self-taught techie I have used, abused and destroyed many top shelf quality products. I currently work in very unforgiving and hostile environments, with heat, dirt, dust, moisture and more mosquitos than I know what to do with. Over the years I have had the top of the line laptops such as Asus Pro, HP Elitebook, Panasonic Toughbook and the infamous Getac. All were great laptops, most were milspec but eventually they all had issues. Cheap parts would break prematurely, Hard Drives burn out, optical drives quit working. Last year I wound up down range with my Panisonic tough book and started having major issues. On my next trip through the states I ordered a Lenovo W520. This was a lot heavier than expected with the 120w charger and large long lasting battery pack, but a year later is near indestructible. It has been to the mountains in the cold, deserts in summer and on planes, trains and automobiles. The most taxing of which are the family road tirps where the kids in the back seat are using it for a movie player. When my wife needed a new laptop I didn't hesitate and shop around trying to get the best deal I could, I when straight for Lenovo again. This time I settled on the less rugged E520 series. Amazingly I stumbled upon the best price I could and bought hers for aroud $550 from Amazon. The seller had it shipped and delivered in 56hrs and my wife was back on line and skyping with me by the end of the week. This machine is not the best on the market but for the price it is a very good value. Thus far it has survived a toddler juice incident that her old HP or Ideabook would have taken like Fukushima meltdown. My personal W520 has drains in the keyboard for these, the E520 does not but has some technology that helps in these situations.Though Lenovo is not the best on the market I feel they are one of the top line manufactures. If you are looking for a very well built machine that is tough and can take abuse look no further.

Laptop is okay for it's price. But I want to write about the warranty lenovo provides. After 10 months of use, mouse pad started behaving differently. So I created case with Lenovo as my Laptop was still covered under warranty. My case was pending with billing department for review (Though I never got the call for this). When I called them up after 8 days, they said that they found substance inside the laptop; hence it's not covered under warranty. And biggest joke that repair cost will be 900 dollars.
My first reaction was that I got it for 500 dollars and they want me to pay 900 dollars for repair. What on earth this makes sense !!
I had also sent the new keypad in the box and requested them to replace my old keypad with new one as some of the keys had come out. That also they were not ready to do. ALL or NOTHING.
Okay.. Then I requested, do not repait my laptop; Just swap the keypad. BUT NO. They Cannot. ALL or NOTHING.
Pissed off and asked them to send my laptop back unrepaired.
DO NOT Suggest LENOVO to anyone for it's sheer unwillingness to help Customers !!
Never experienced such bad support in my life yet .....Lenovo Thinkpad E520 that were manufactured in the last quarter of 2011 have a faulty EEPROM chip. This means eventually the laptop won't start up. Lenovo has recognized there is a problem, but will not replace the faulty chip if the laptop is out of warranty. My E520 was two months out of warranty when it quit working. Lenovo informed me I will have to pay them to replace the chip that was faulty in the first place. Beware!!

This is my first Asus, having had Gateways, Dells, and several IBMs before. Comparisons to a MacBook pro aren't totally off-base my wife is sitting beside me with her MacBook Pro, and the screens are definitely comparable, as well as the thinness, lightness, etc. However, there is the keyboard thing. Then again, my wife's macbook has gone in twice for a keyboard repair. Hmm.
Battery life is of course awesome. The warranty is very good as well, better than most other manufacturers'.Overall good value laptop for the price paid $750 including sales tax.
positive: super thin and light, large hard drive @500gb, bright LED widescreen, HDMI out at 1080 resolution, webcam which has face-recognition authentication, 10 key number pad, decent altec lansing speakers, stay cool keyboard, quiet fan, averaging 10+ hour battery life.
negative: windows 7 premium 64bit OS is a bit buggy with 32bit apps and device drivers , no built-in bluetooth, fingerprints left on black brushed aluminum case, maximum capacity of 4gb ram.
The laptop uses the su7300 Intel core 2 duo processors, which in my opinion is more than adequate for a poweruser. I can run adobe CS4 suite, MS Office, several different browsers and VMware workstation running 2 VMs (2003 server and Fedora Core11) all at the same time.
I was considering buying a Macbook pro laptop but after seeing this at my local BB store, I bought it on impulse and am more than happy with this purchase. Best laptop I have ever bought, i'm official done with HP, Lenovo, and Acer brands.First, some background:
I've been a Mac user for 10 years or so as my primary machine. I use a MacBook Pro and OS X as my work machine and needed a secondary laptop for personal use.
I couldn't justify dropping $2,000 for another MacBook Pro so close to Christmastime, but I could justify $600 to $700 for this unit. I've had it for a couple of weeks now and love it.
The Good:
While it does not have the claimed 12 hour battery life, you can easily get 7-10 hours out of it depending on how you configure brightness etc. More than enough to make it a joy to use.
The screen is 15.6 (call it 16" widescreen) and is bright and crisp with plenty of room to work in.
Chicklet keys are really nice touch. In general the unit is really solid and fast.
The one year warranty ASUS has is unusual in that it covers spills and drops. Other manufacturers have this available but you have to pay for it. Comes standard with ASUS.
The Bad:
As other reviewers before have said, there is a very slight flex in the keyboard, but to me it is not noticable, nor do I really care because it doesn't affect my typing.
The exterior black is a neat finish but again, as other reviewers have stated, it is a fingerprint magnet. Not too much of a concern for me though because the machine is a joy to use. Really. It is. If you buy this you will not be disappointed.
The Ugly:
I've tried really hard the past two weeks to find something wrong with the machine and really the only thing that is bad about it is that it runs Windows 7 rather than OS X. Windows 7 is not a bad OS and on this machine it is quite fast, particularly if you don't load up a new laptop with software right when you get it, but rather install one program a day to see if any give you problems.
Final recommendations:
Strongly recommend two things with the purchase of this unit. One is the Microsoft ARC Wireless Mouse. Very cool.
The other is a Backblaze account for set it and forget it, backup. . Get the $50 per year account rather than the $5/month and for less than five bucks a month you will have offsite backup and peace of mind.
In terms of how this unit compares to the MacBook Pro?
The MBP is undoubtedly a more solid machine and the solid aluminum carved block is a joy to use. But if you don't have the money for it and if you need a solid, reliable unit that is fairly similar, this ASUS is a really solid choice; and at $600 to $700, you're not going to find anything comparable to it in the PC line. Trust me, I know. Before buying this unit at Best Buy, I looked at ThinkPads, ACERs, HP, Toshiba, Sony and DELL.
I'm sold on ASUS.
Hope this helps!I bought this computer mainly because of the claims made about the battery life. I am in college and my laptop goes everywhere that I do. I use a laptop to take lecture notes in all of my classes and on days when I am on campus for 5 plus hours, I really needed to step up the battery life. So, I put my HP to rest and went with this, the Asus ul50ag-A2. This particular model is great! The battery claims are correct. I have been getting easily 8 to 9 hours worth of battery life and I could get even better if I wanted to keep tinkering with the power settings. The ultra-low voltage processor runs just fine, fast enough for me!The quality of this laptop is awesome. It feels very sturdy and well-made. It looks very sleek. All black with a black brushed aluminum finish, LED screen, blue lights, and a very cool "smart-pad" mouse that blends right in with the rest of the computer. I especially love the way the smart-pad works, very much like the mouse on a Macbook, with two-finger scrolling and three-finger tapping that can be used as the right-click function (don't worry, there is also a button for right and left-clicking). So far, I have not had any problems with overheating, but the computer is still relatively new to me (the ice cool palm rest also helps). I also would like to point out that the computer is thin and light. It fits in my book-filled backpack and does not add much more weight at all. I feel safe saying that this is the best laptop I have purchased yet and I will continue to use Asus in the near future. It is easily comparable to computers in the 1000 dollar plus range.

Update
After 3 months this laptop is still holding up against all the games (black ops, mw3, skyrim, etc). But a new problem I came across is that it was made for hard drive replacement to be pretty hard. the cable that connects to the hard drive is blocked by where the battery connects to the computer, making it difficult to take it out. And I REALLY want to get an SSD in there (I suspect the 7200 rpm is a bottleneck).First off, I must say that when searching for a new laptop Sony honestly was at the bottom of my list. I normally find them overpriced, underpowered and what can I say I am still a bit miffed about them removing Linux support from my PS3. What I can tell you after spending a few hours with my new VAIO, is that I am unexpectedly happy, this is really a very good machine. To explain how I wound up with Sony out of all the Laptops out their available on Amazon and why I am so happy, here is my short list of requirements that led me too VPCSA43FX.
1. Linux compatibility (Ubuntu Precise Pangolin)
2. Discrete Graphics
3. Not NVidia Discrete Graphics
4. i5 or faster cpu
5. Higher than 720p screen resolution (has 1600x900)
6. Less than 14" screen size
7. Something that looks professional and stylish
8. Thin and Light
So that list is kinda like driving directions to this laptop there isn't much else available that compares and is reasonably priced.
For Windows users, I find performance is more than adequate, it's not an i7, and not the fastest discrete card out there, but it is an exceptional mix of style, performance, and gaming ability for a good value at the 1k price point today.
For anyone that is an Ubuntu Linux user and is interested, this laptop works brilliantly as an Ubuntu dual boot system. From un-boxing this laptop to having a fully functional dual boot win7 and Ubuntu 12.04 laptop took less than 1.5 hours. This includes the time to download and burn the Ubuntu installation disk as well as complete the win7 setup and patch downloads (your download time may vary of course). Nearly every bell and whistle works right out of the box with no additional work to make Linux happy. This includes the often broken features below:
Wireless Check
Sound Check
WebCam Check
Volume control Check
Brightness control Check
Touchpad -Check
ATI Card Check
HDMI Check!
Keyboard Back light Check
Absolutely amazing! Sony who has demonstrated themselves to be very unfriendly to Linux users through the torture of their PS3 Linux enthusiasts, has released what is nearly the perfect Linux laptop! Not too mention that just a quick reboot and you're back in windows with an adequately performing gaming laptop, at least for last years games!
I normally have some minor list of complaints, however right now I just have a big smile as I wrap up this post written in Ubuntu a couple hours after receiving VPCSA43FX.
Excellent work Sony!
A side note delivery via Amazon Prime was spot on!

I have had trouble with this computer overheating since it arrived. It has a noisy fan. Now it won't boot up and so I sent it in to get fixed. They are saying that it needs a new battery. I have had this computer less than a year and don't expect to have these problems so I am really disappointed. I am wondering if this was a refurbished unit that they sent me.Read Best Reviews of Sony VAIO VPCSA43FX/BI 13.3 Inch Laptop (Jet Black) Here

What it is, is a very fast Laptop, with a huge battery that one can do desktop work on for hours on end.
They rate the battery life at 10 hours...don't know if that is true, but 6 hours was easy.
It has a lovely, large screen and very nice keys.
This is our car travel laptop (we have a small computer for long distance use), and our remote video, photo processing computer.
Nice computer that does exactly what one would expect.I had to have the keyboard replaced on my computer (my fault, not the machine's), and HP customer service not only did it fast, but also replaced other components with better ones while they were at it and gave me an extra battery.
Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this computer and I've had it since February or so. The aluminum body is slick and it runs very cool. It's very light for its size and has great battery life (8 hours on mine). I use it to play some games, too, and it does fine with most popular game titles. For the price, you can't beat it!

A friend who is an IT bigshot recommended this computer to me as an excellent value for the price. I like the machine very much. True, as laptops go, it is on the large size. Therefore, it would be better to think of it as a portable work station. I like the size because of how comfortable that makes it to use the keyboard. If looks matter to you, the computer's beautiful design will appeal to you also.Read Best Reviews of HP dv7-6c20us (17.3-Inch Screen) Laptop Here
1. 4 cores = responsive apps2. 6GB RAM = no swap file (#1 killer of performance)
3. 17.1-inch screen = desktop-like experience (an off-the-clock genius BestBuy employee was purchasing a $1400 13" MacBook Pro next to me; some random female customer and I shared a few laughs over it)
4. discrete graphics
5. 2x USB2, 2x USB3 ports
6. Second slot for an SSD
7. One of the best-looking laptops on the market (the HP m6-1045dx looks nice too!)
Cons 1. The screen's got a very reasonable viewing angle, but I'm spoiled by my desktop's amazing LCD. Most people wouldn't complain.
2. Hard drive light is on the side, so you can't really see it during use. 3. You'll occasionally get some weird flickering lines on the screen. I suspect this is a driver issue, but either way, putting the computer in standby and waking it again fixes the issue.
Almost every laptop has some fatal flaw (2 USB ports, small screen, 4GB of RAM [paging kills your computer's performance more than anything else], speakers you can barely hear, hideous appearance, annoyingly large logo stealing space from the screen, etc.) This laptop has no such flaws. I've always built my own computers and felt sorry for (read: laughed at) people who bought pieces of junk that didn't have enough RAM, didn't have discrete graphics, etc. This is the first sub-$1,000 computer that has ever impressed me. HP hit all the right spots. I'm difficult to impress, but they've done it. 95/100. This is an amazing product.

Size: This is a nice portable, not too small not too big laptop. I carry it in my backpack to and from school and I can not feel a difference between this and a small text book. It's nice not having to lug my 6 year old hp around anymore.
Screen: On the highest brightness setting the screen is very bright and well lit. Lowest brightness setting will save some battery life and it's not too low where you cant see anything but just perfect. The led screen is much brighter, more energy efficient and gives a better picture when watching movies or playing games compared to the older fluorescent style screens. The hd resolution is typical for any standard computer and on a 14 inch screen it looks better than on a 15 inch or 17 inch. You just loose some screen space but improve the clarity. The screen itself is pretty thin too. Stack two nickels together and that about how thin it is. Although it is pretty solid
Build: The computer is all plastic. Its your typical plastic that most laptops use today but everything on the computer feels pretty solid and not chincy. There is no metal screen back or anything like that.
Ports: The hdmi port works great. Hooked it up to my led tv the other day and worked right away and looks nice. Usb 2.0 port works like every other usb 2.0 port I have used and seems very standard and is located on the left hand side. I currently use it for a wireless mouse dongle. The 2 usb 3.0 ports are located on the right hand side, side by side, next to the hdmi port. I transferred some file in about 15 seconds that would have taken probably a minute with usb 2.0. If you do not know usb 3.0 is alot fast than 2.0 but if you are just transferring small word documents or small pictures you wont really notice it. I find it pretty convenient this laptop includes both and not just one or the other. It also has your typical cat 5 which includes a clasp type of mechanism where the plug in goes I'm assuming for extra security which is nice too. There is a mic/headphone port (not seperate). I read somewhere that this was a bad thing as it a combined port an not seperate for a mic and a seperate pair of headphones but the way I see it is there is already a built in microphone by the webcam so you don't need a seperate mic anyways. So if you have earbuds or headphones with a built in mic it works that way as well.
Trackpad: Has raised bumps which I prefer over a smooth one because you can get the feel of it more. Also you can turn the trackpad off by double tapping the circle indentation in the upper left hand corner. All finger control for windows 8 feel fine and I don't have a problem with them. Just takes time to get used to if you aren't already. You also have your typical left and right buttons that have a nice solid click.
Keyboard. Chiclet style. I prefer this setup as the keys are more on their own "island". Just like mac keyboards. They are more spaced out than a standard keyboard but I was able to get used to it after a couple minutes of typing. Keys are very easy to press and I don't feel a slight bit of finger strain at all. The up and down arrows are smaller than white I am used to but not a problem at all. Features on the keyboard also include screen brightness adjustment, mute, sound up/down, wifi on/off and is a standard size keyboard. It also has play and stop etc.
Sound: I didn't notice this in the advertisement but this laptop has altec lansing speakers with dolby advanced audio. They sound great for such a small laptop and wathcing a movie would be enjoyable or listening to music or playing games.
Performance: This has 6gb of ram and the 3rd gen i5 17 watt processor. The 6gb of ram should be enough for almost anyone which i nice that you don't have to upgrade it right away. The processor is the 3rd gen i5 with Ivy Bridge. I look at this processor as an efficient but powerful processor. I was able to download some files off the internet, watch 3 movies in 1080p and play music on pandora all at once. So this should be fine for almost anything you want to do. I am not a gamer so I can't comment on that. The 17 watts i5 processor had me concerned when I first got it thinking it might be too slow since the regular ones run at 35 watts but that all gone and I am very pleased to do anything I really want without having to wait for anything to catch up. I also read a review on the 17 watt i5 vs the 35 watt and the tests came back almost identical. So you get the performance while using less power. Also my older style hp would heat up lie an oven. I've been running this one pretty hard that last hour and it has yet to get hot. Stays cool to the touch. The vent is also located on the side which is great for people who actually use laptops on their lap.
Battery: Every laptop that you can get a good deal on always has a cruch. The battery life on this is about 4 hours. Thats surfing the web, watching some online videos and listening to music. It is pretty good for a 4 cell battery and just how small it is but there is better out there. I find that I am able to go to school and work on anything I have to before I leave so it works for me. So if you use this for travel or dont have a power outlet near you, you might want to consider buying another battery or a portable power supply.
Webcam: Webcam is front and center and works. It's not 1080p hd or anything but it works and has the same resolution you will find standard anywhere else.
Overall I love the laptop. It's lightweight, powerful, slim and has all the features you need. The only reason I took away the one star is because of the battery life. Its great to have this much power in a smaller laptop but it needs a bigger battery some days. Also any upgrading of the hard drive, memory etc...requires you go through the keyboard which can be a pain but it's not that difficult to do. If you are looking for a lightweight laptop that has great performance, resolution and you dont plan on using it for more than 4 hours at a time without a charge then this would be it.
****After a couple months now I have really enjoyed this laptop. I still have to reach for my charger every now and then but most of the time the battery life is long enough where I can get done what I need to. It last about 4 hours on a dim screen. Overall performance is still excellent. Loads and plays a 1080p movie on youtube without hesitation. The issue with my last hp laptop is it would get really hot. This one gets warm if I leave it on the bed, but not hot or even really warm. The paint by the keyboard and mousepad haven't dulled at all. I paid $400 for this on black friday. I would pay the asking price for this laptop if I needed a lightweight, fast and efficient laptop.
Update 4-13-13
Still running strong. No issues yet and I still like everything about it.
I wanted to inform some people who have not experienced Windows 8 yet. All of the advertisements shown for Windows 8 has the "tile" layout, similiar to smartphones and tablets. It's great for those devices but Windows 8 also has a "retro" user interface which is the traditional layout most people are used to and is found on Windows 7, Vista, XP etc. So you can have icons just like the Windows 7 but there is no start menu. You can add a start menu through a free download, google it, that works fairly well. That way you can access everything traditionally like you normally would in Windows 7 and XP by clicking on Start. Also Windows 8 is incredibly fast when starting up. Windows XP and 7 take an average of 45 seconds plus. Windows 8 Takes about 15 seconds for me to get signed on with this laptop. So it if fast which is nice if you have to log on quickly. Any questions please leave a comment. In my lifetime (I'm 65 years old) I have owned too many desktops to count and this was my 30th Laptop. I must say that this is the BEST of the BEST !!
I have never owned a Laptop that was so responsive and trouble free !! It basically set itself up, maintains itself automatically and allows me to just use it instead of always having to upgrade and maintain it myself ! When I turn it on it boots up and is running in 2 to 3 seconds .... WOW !! Battery life is around three hours which is great and this machine even gives me a warning at 14% battery life left, so I can hook it up to the charger and run it from there without missing a beat ! This little machine has NEVER gotten near hot, just mildly warm !!
Now, I am not a big fan of HP ( I have several old HP machines in my garage) but this really is the best engineered machine I have ever owned. HP has thought of everything ! The only thing missing was the mouse and a CD/DVD Drive so I purchased a LG GP10NB20 Portable DVD+/-RW External Drive and a Logitech Wireless Mouse M325 from Amazon.com, both of which worked flawlessly with this computer !
Well, I can't say enough good things about this machine, but soon I would just appear to be rambling ... so I will close with this :
If you are looking for a super fast and powerful Laptop computer at an exceptionally low price, buy yourself one of these !!
You won't regret it !This laptop is way beyond my expectation. Before bought this laptop, I had a Thinkpad X61s. Since the X61s is so slow for my daily calculation, I have to buy a affordable new laptop. I only spend 500 on this one. And the performance is just great.
This laptop is thin and light. And compare to my X61s, the screen is bigger and much more clear. The 14" LED screen is bright and clean. I don't know what to say. Thanks to the technology. I can not use my old laptop outdoor in a shine day because I can barely see nothing. However, now I can bring my laptop to the outside of the library.
And I was expecting a heavy fan noise since it is a hp product. However, it runs very quietly under regular use. Maybe the i5 CPU helped a lot. I don't feel the warm or the noise. It just perfect.
This i5 cpu + 6g ram laptop runs very fast. With the win8, it starts in seconds. I run Matlap, Ansys and ArcGIS with it. Not a single problem at all. Maybe my old computers are too old? I just feel it so fast and enjoyable to use.
The audio speaker is loud and clear and the camera is clear as well. I don't know what else I would want from a 500 product. It's just perfect.
Thanks HP and Intel. You make my money worth. The only problem was that the photo of the laptop was not accurate. It doesn't have the number keyboard on the side , it only has the numbers on top. Be careful if that is what you are looking for, otherwise its very nice. I don't really like wondows 8 inicial windows, it kind of confusing. My granddaughter was delighted to get this, especially for its weight and excellent performance, meeting all her needs as a college student.
