Sony VAIO T Series SVT13114GXS 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver Mist)

Sony VAIO T Series SVT13114GXS 13.3-Inch UltrabookWell, you will fall in love with this laptop's apperance. And, it's Sony brand, what can go wrong. So far I used it for almost a month, here's my feeling toward it.

1. Speed = pretty fast. It boots windows and shuts down as advertised. i haven't really compare it with other ultrabook but to compete over 0.5 second to me is silly.

2. Weight = 3.5 lb is a bit heavier than I like to. Toshiba portege that I played with at Bestbuy was awesomely light. But there were reports about it being filmsy so I hesitated to get that and end up with sony. Personally I like this to be another 0.5 lb lighter to have that real ultrabook feel.

3. screen = man i wish this would be 1600 x 900 that would make this world a much happier place for me. i have this urge to get a S serie and just swap the screen.. :(

4. power = ok now. there is a problem. as we all know, ultrabook was suppose to compete with macbook air but macbook air can be on standby mode for days. i had this laptop fully charged in the morning and put on sleep mode but by the time i'm writing this review, 10:40 pm, battery is down to 9% ... something is not right. i will try it again and if the result reversed, i will revise this part of my review. Also the default 5 hour use time is somehow exaggerated. i think 3.5 4 hours are more realistic.

5. durability = i baby this laptop. i have no intention to rough test it so i'll pass this to someone else to provide.

6. accessories = bought a keyboard skin for 2.99 from ebay instead of 19.99 + tax from sony direct. very happy about this.

7. upgrades = i added 4gb to make it 8gb. removed the default 500gb hdd with a intel 120GB ssd. i recommend all to do the same. :) i also had to re-install clean windows + office to speed things up.

8. keyboard = not a big fan here. the key location is not comfortable compare with thinkpad. and the feel of the click feel i am going to poke a hole in it. but after a while i do get use to it. not happy here but acceptable. no backlit here.

thank you all for bare with me. to sum it all up, i like the name sony , the way it looks, and perform for the most part are satisfactory. some minor upgrade such as better screen resolution, led backlit keyboard, would be nice.

This is a nice looking machine, suitable for home users and business types, but not for serious gamers due to its lacking a dedicated graphics processor. It is very solidly built, with no creaking or flexing, and feels very nice to the touch. The touchpad is responsive and has a full area click feature, with the right-hand lower corner reserved for right-clicks. A slight downside is that while clicking, the mouse sometimes drifts away slightly as you are still on the touch surface; I found tapping the touchpad more reliable.

The screen is bright and has good viewing angles for this type of device. The screen is glossy and not matte, so it can act like a mirror in bright environments. The resolution is also fine for a screen of this size. It is no retina display for sure as close inspection of letters reveals the step-like stagger of pixellation. However, the key word there is close: at the normal screen to eye distance the stagger is smoothed away naturally not a deal breaker for me.

The webcam is great and produces good colour representation from what I have seen. I have not tried it in low light conditions yet. The microphone also picks up sound very well, so no shouting required.

The speakers are surprisingly good and completely hidden. My wife bought an albeit-cheap ($9), USB-powered pair of external speakers before she tried the laptop's and she really should not have bothered: the laptop outperformed them in every way.

Speaking of sound, then cooling fan is audible at full throttle, but is is acceptably quiet.

Ports-wise, this laptop is well-endowed, especially given its ultrabook form factor: LAN port, VGA, full HDMI, SD & Pro Duo card slot, headphone port, 1x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.0 (also a sleeping-charge port for external devices).

The keyboard is clickless and has that nice resist and collapse feel, so no sponginess.

All of this for $800 is an absolute bargain frankly. If you plan on getting Windows 8, get Windows 7 Home Premium as Microsoft offers an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15.

The three previous reviews generally echo my impressions. However I wanted to clarify some of the specifications. The weight is variously listed as 3.3 lbs, 3.4lbs and 3.54 lbs. I believe there is confusion as to whether the number after the decimal point is in tenths of a pound or in ounces. I have weighed the Vaio T on a digital postal scale and it weighs 3 lbs 5.8 ounces. In terms of lbs this equates to approx. 3.36 lbs. The power brick is surprising small. It weighs 5.2 ounces (the brick and the nondetachable cord that goes from the brick to the computer.) The brick dimensions are 3.5" long, 1 3/8" wide and 1" high. The review that lists a "Con" has the Vaio being .5 lb overweight may be overstated as I noticed that the specs for the soon to be released Asus Zenbook Prime UX32A (with a hybrid drive) lists its weight as 3.2 lbs. If that is pounds and tenths of pounds then the difference is actually less than 2 tenths of a pound (or less than 3 ounces).

The Vaio T has a 500GB hard drive plus a 32GB SSD in what is listed as a 532GB hybrid drive. This compares favorably to the announced slew of other ultrabooks with hybrid drives. The competition (Samsung series 5, Asus UX32A and Acer S5) generally has only a 24GB SSD. In addition the Vaio has one expandable RAM slot which can take up to 4GB of additional RAM. I bought a 4GB chip for about $26 and installed it and it worked without any hitches.

Hope this helps.

This ultrabook looks great, feels great, solidly built

and is very responsive. I had it so far only 3 days.

Easy to setup and quick to start because of 32GB solid state memory.

I read some questionable reviews about the display and the keyboard.

The display is very sharp and the keyboard is good, considering that this

product weighs less than 3.5lbs and is quiet thin. If you are not a major

gamer or graphic designer, you will have all the speed you need with the

3rd generation Core I5 processor. I have not tested the battery, but based on

the indicator I don't think that it will give you 7 hours unplugged.

If your eyes are on the weaker side, you should go with a 15.4" display,

if PC is your comfort environment this is your notebook, especially for

travel... If you can afford and feel comfortable with the MAC go for the

Notebook Air or Notebook Pro, they give you a faster processor that will

serve you further in the future.

But overall this notebook met and exceeded most of my expectations.

5. No heating problems

6. nice light and firm keyboard (thankfully not too much innovation has been done here by adding funky stuff)

Acer Aspire AS5560-7696;NX.RQSAA.002 15.6-Inch LaptopWow, where to begin? fantastic computer...in use as I write this! fast, responsive, color is a mahogany-red, NOT an "apple" red...very nice finish...true to color as in picture, no dissappointment here! OMG---battery life is FANTABULOUS !! been on since 3pm...it is NOW 8:07pm...and it says I STILL have 43% or 1 hr & 33min left...telling you-she IS a work-horse!! loving it!

I bought this for a work at home customer service job. It could have been a great computer, but there is something wrong with they keyboard. When I am typing the letters are jumping all over the place, and some of the words when I type them are being erased as I type them. I have never had this happen with a laptop. I surely cannot use this and type in customer accounts and type reports like this. It is going to slow down productivity because I have to constantly go back and correct words that get messed up.

Toshiba 15.6" Satellite A665-S5170 Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Notebook 640GB Computer

Toshiba 15.6' Satellite A665-S5170 Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Notebook 640GB ComputerI too purchased this laptop from BB in February 2011..

Everything started to become very buggy with this laptop after 6 months of use. Last night, I received a HDD/SMART failure message,Its game over for your HDD once that happens, it can not be repaired, the only option is to buy a new HDD. I decided against that, and purchased a new laptop (not a Toshiba) because quite frankly, I am not impressed with this crap computer. It looks very cheap, the keys became loose after a few months also.

I don't know about you..but i find it very odd..that 3 people all purchased the same model..from the same company..in the same month .and we are ALL having major problems..

This is my last and final toshiba. It has been nothing but trouble. Turning it on to Windows usually results in going directly to BIOS. Then play around to find out what I need to do to open Windows. cannot shutdown or restart without receiving fatal errors. I am now running out to buy an external hard drive because Windows cannot back-up and I now have a warning that my internal harddrive is about to crash and I need to back-up to an external drive. I have done all the fixes Toshiba has put out. Toshiba shows a healthy hard drive....wrong. I have an alert that says:Your HDD has the SMART Predict Failure function which monitors the HDD operating status. Your HDD is experiencing a problem and SMART monitoring software predicts that the HDD will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends you create a back-up for your HDD data. Then contact an authorized service provider in order to check your drive and purchase a new replacement drive if necessary. Apparently a lot of the machines have this problem from the updates or fixes I have been sent. Piece of crap!!!!!!!!!

The crackling/stuttering sound is almost constant. BBuy should be shamed for recommending this when it first came out. I HATE IT.

My tech guy said I'd have to call Toshiba and send it to them for repairs. For a teacher, this is a disaster.

UPDATE:10/21/2011 Sent it back to Toshiba. Had problem taking delivery because Toshiba wanted a signature. The hours of delivery were during my work week. I wasn't going to drive 50 miles round trip to the nearset pick-up facility. Fortunately FEDEX was willing to deliver at night. The computer is working well, but the sound is starting to screech again. Having to download my Microsoft Office, Nuance, iTunes and all the other programs again was a hassle. Now I have to pick thru my files to restore them.

Hello I have had this computer for about three years now and I have noticed several irritating things about this laptop. This can include the annoying overheating and the loss of function in certain keys at random. This has a two star rating because of the ok (but not great processing power and ability to run games). I would recommend not buying this product. Please listen to this review.

The first one I bought crashed after not even having it for a month and I had to send it to Toshiba for it be given a new hard drive. Now.. it just shuts off by itself. The power cord doesn't work and the battery is bad. I've had this computer less than three years and it is CRAP! Worse spend money ever.

I too bought my A665-S5170 in February of 2011my laptop is now 44 days out of warrantyI got it from BestBuy which of course they just wash there hands of the whole Hard Drive crashingmy issues also started in December as wellI took it to an independant repair shopfor about $200.00 I'm having a new hard drive installed :(

I will never buy another Toshiba again !!! Ever! Not to mention their customer service must be off shore, can't understand any of them. I currently have a case open, but of course they aren't open on weekends-How convenient :(

When I purchase another laptop, I will go back to Gateway... great customer service, even if you are out of warranty...

It's pretty sad when a $700.00 laptop doesn't last over 12 months before having issues-

And the star "1" is more than what they deserve.

I buy it last March and after 3 months this is my opinion:

The Pro's; starts fast (really fast), the finger tip reader is a nice touch, the screen resolution is superb, the battery life is good, 4 Hrs 10 min using the BD. fast graphics. Back-lit is nice, but no dimmer control. the Beats sound is Ok. and the bottom of the machine stay cool after two or 3 hours of use, thats great.

The Con's: the keyboard feels cheap and you really need to hit hard the space tab in order to spaciate the words, the touch pad is hard to control and need a quirurgic pulse to make it point, after a while, i opted for an external mouse, the charger is bulky.

The BD has beautiful image but if you try to use other funcion togheter, star with hiccups, the internet connection for some reason is slow and with shorter range than my older HP DV 6 (4 years old) it tooks 1/3 more time to download the same information on this new laptop, disapointing....

The new OS W8 really doesn't help in the performance of the laptop and for me is an important downside, i think the Redmont Co. didn't do a good job in this one..

Final line: I think this Laptop could be better, and maybe you should think twice before pull the trigger in this one.

Amazing product, really good performance, just what I was looking for. If you're considering replacing your desktop this might be a good deal. I've played Point Blank and Call of Duty 4 with it, ran 2 virtual machines and AutoCad...Beats Audio needs adjustments as a lot of fellas said and after that sounds decent (I've compared with another HP PC both using high quality audio tracks). I felt the heat just ok..since I'm living in Liverpool and it's cold...but, if you're living in a hot place it might disturb you.

The keyboard is amazing, just as the lights and the finger tip reader....amazing feature lads you're really going to enjoy it, saves a lot of time.

overall, this pc is just what I was looking for, using it for 2 weeks now.

Any questions I'll be here to answer, since this costs a lot and I'm sure you wanna make a good decision.

HP Pavilion dv4-2170us Intel Core i5, 2.26Ghz, 4GB, 320GB, DVDRW with Lightscribe, White Notebook,

HP Pavilion dv4-2170us Intel Core i5, 2.26Ghz, 4GB, 320GB, DVDRW with Lightscribe, White Notebook, 14.1', Webcam, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bitHad this HP DV4-2170US for just over a week and love it. The keyboard has a nice silky feel to it and responds nicely. Love the "touch" volume and WiFi controls; you basically just slide your finger over the volume level to adjust and just "tap" the WiFi icon to turn it on/off, cool! The screen is nice and has that glossy look that most new laptops have.

I got a pretty good deal on this laptop through Staples. The offer included a $46 instant savings, plus a $50 savings from HP and it was priced pretty low to begin with. I ended up paying ~$670 shipped, tax, etc., not bad for an Intel i5 processor, 14.1" machine with 4GB/320GB HD.

My only issue was that initially, it did recognize my WiFi setup but would not authenticate? I tried resetting my wireless router, rebooted it, reset all the settings, etc., nothing worked! I then finally just reloaded the driver/software for the adaptor (off of HP's site), and that fixed it, go figure!

Battery life could be a bit better, I get just over 3 hours on a full charge which I believe is less than HP indicates (4 hours?), but that's not really a deal breaker. Others have mentioned that the Intel i5 processor is a bit of a power monger, not a bad sacrifice for more speed/power!

Overall, if you don't mind the white cover and keyboard I definitely recommend this laptop.

On a side note, the HP DV4-2160US is the exact laptop (same specs) but with a brownish/plaid cover and black keyboard instead of the white setup on the HP DV4-2170US.

GOOD STUFF: It is fast and quiet. Fit and finish is excellent. Matching accessories add a nice touch. Touch pad behaves predictably. Price ($650) is unbeatable for the specs. External control for volume is a useful feature. Keyboard and touch pad are laid out conveniently.

NOT-SO-GOOD STUFF: It is a little heavier for a laptop of this size. Battery life could be better. Tons of HP bloatware. It gets hot, when the processor is working full throttle for an extended duration.

Overall I love this laptop and there are no major complaints so far.

I bought this computer because I needed a fast processor, and it has that. Unfortunately, the computer has other problems. Not since my 2001 iMac have I had so many technical problems in a new computer. The keyboard is shoddy -a key popped off when I'd been using it for about a month or two, and was very hard to put back on -and there's a nasty glitch with the cursor suddenly going out of control, so that the end of what I type pops up in the middle of a previous word. The touchpad is so user-hostile that I bought an external mouse. HP tech support is frustrating to deal with. All this would be easier to excuse if the computer were cheap, but it wasn't.

I picked this up at Staples for $649 after rebates, which seems like a great price for an i5 processor. Seems like a nice computer, satisfied so far. But the sounds quality is horrible. I had an HP Pavilion that's 4 years old with no special sound card or anything like that, and it's set up to play through a decent (but not high end) AltecLansing system. I was thrilled with the Pavilion's sound. When I plugged this one in, the drop-off was so noticeable I wondered if I actually had it plugged in correctly. Maybe the sound card is the issue. Who knows? But in any case, if you're not dedicated to excellent sound, this is a good little laptop.

HP Spectre 14-3210nr 14-Inch Ultrabook (Black/Silver)

HP Spectre 14-3210nr 14-Inch UltrabookI bought spectre 14 3010nr first and it turned out to be very very slow for a $1200 original price computer. I returned it and bought this model for about $100 more thinking that it will be fast enough as it does have better processor and graphics memory. Turns out it is snapping fast for a notebook as well it came with all the necessary softwares with less junk.

Why 3 stars? Because it has a defective screen. I read the reviews of 14-3010nr that there were problems with screen but I thought newer model will have that issue fixed. It works but sometimes the colors go dim and white color turns into light green. I am really disappointed from HP because when you buy a laptop on a premium price, you expect premium performance too. I think all the "premium price" you pay is for the software that it comes with (Adobe premiere elements, lojack 1 year subscription and Norton internet security for 2 years). But I would rather had got a fantastic laptop with none of these software, which I can substitute with ones of my choice.

Here are pros and cons in my POV:

Pros:

Awesome design>>> I really mean it.

Good processor >>> Don't compare it to desktop i5's or i3's but its good for daily uses

Intel HD 4000 >>>> This is only in pros if you compare it to previous model with graphics 3000; which had lags in playing hd videos.

Sound >>> don't expect to use it for party even though it has beats audio but the volume is very good for a laptop

Cons:

Screen >>> even though it has higher resolution then most of the laptops out there, screen problems are just not acceptable when they are carried from one model to another.

Ram >>> 4 gb is not enough especially when the Ram is also used for graphics purposes. Note: you can upgrade to 8 gb but its a very painful process.

NFC >>> Awesome idea on paper but no practical use. It only add $$ to price.

Camera >>> I am really sick of companies advertising

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 16.0-Inch Laptop - Black/Grey

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 16.0-Inch Laptop - Black/GreyBought this for my wife to replace a 4-year-old Acer. Ordered last night and got it this morning...

Right off the bat, the huge screen size mesmerized me. Migrating from a 14" to this with a much better quality screen was a pleasure to the eyes.

The system booted up quickly for the first time but I had to do LOTS and LOTS of updates including SP1. Toshiba never stops short of putting bloatware in its laptops sadly. But about 2 hours of "cleaning" made the laptop breath a lot easier...

The web cam sliding panel on the screen is annoying and I haven't found a way to completely disable it yet.

Overall, on looks I give it a solid 5 stars. I got the black one. It's shiny and very good-looking. It's a bit on the heavy side at over 7 lbs but that was totally expected.

The keys on keyboard are very comfortably spaced and are very responsive. The 10-key is a HUGE plus. The mouse is very tactile and responds great to the touch of the fingertips. It's supposed to allow multi-finger touch as well I think, but haven't had a chance to mess around with that yet.

It also comes with instructions as to how request your free copy of the Windows 7 upgrade. You can do so through Toshiba's web site.

The bottom of the laptop does not get nearly as hot as the older Acer used to, so that's a plus.

My first laptop ever was Toshiba Satellite (that was n years ago!) and only if I had kept that one and I could put the side by side... what a world of difference.

I left the BEST feature (in my opinion and so far) for last: The speakers are THE BOMB!!! They are hands down the best speakers on any laptop I have ever seen/owned. I owned another Toshiba that I bought from the retailer that sells things in bulk and it also had very loud speakers for a laptop but this laptop's speakers are both LOUD and FANTASTIC quality. The harman/kardon label says it all. Indeed one of the best features so far...

Again, it's been only 1 day and I spent most of it getting rid of the bloatware, downloading numerous VISTA updates, and installing many of the software she uses, so I didn't get to play with it much. But overall, I am loving it, and most importantly she's been truly enjoying it so far.

One little annoying feature I could've lived without is the volume buttons' system beep. These touch-sensitive buttons (located on the top right corner of the keyboard) are very responsive, but by default they produce a very annoying system beep every time one or the other is touched. I found through the Sound settings in Control Panel an option that let me turn that off which improved my experience with the volume buttons 100%. Before, sometimes after holding the + or button for a few second, I guess because the annoying system beep itself was glitchy, it'd get "stuck" and would continue to beep even after I let go... That's resolved now that I turned off the system beep associated with it. The touch buttons now function the way they ought to. The buttons are lit so when you touch one or the other, the light goes off for each touch indicating the volume is going up or down one notch. No need for the buzzing system beep... Anyhow, thought to share this...

VERY IMPORTANT-----READ!!!!

Last night, as my wife was using the laptop, it just died.... literally, the whole screen went out.... The power button and battery button were both on; the hard drive light was off; the indicators right below the screen (top of the keyboard) were all off; the power button was fully lit. The fan (yes, it actually has a fan... I found it, but it's SUPER quiet) was functioning but the keyboard didn't seem to respond....... Long story short after troubleshooting for at least 45 minutes and getting nowhere, I called the tech support. It was a call center overseas but the response was quick and tech seemed knowledgeable enough I guess; troubleshooting steps were exactly same as what I had already tried...... sadly, he declared the laptop dead at 10:46 p.m... Cause of death: Unknown (hardware related!). So the tech support tells me I have to ship it to their depot... nothing is done overnight! They would ship the empty box -ground shipping --, then I'd ship it back to them -again GROUND --, then it'd take them 7 to 10 business days to repair, and then they'd ship it back to me -GROUND! I am sorry, but my poor Sony laptop after 10 or so months of heavy use, started having problems with its Wi-Fi card; long story short, I had my laptop picked up, repaired, and sent back to me within 5 business days good as new.

Back to this review, Amazon at the end saved the day... They overnighted one for me last night and I'll have the brand new laptop tomorrow, and then I have to send them this one back... just like that. So as of right now, I am disappointed with Toshiba's overall customer service.... The laptop was doing fantastic, and I have no idea why it died so suddenly... but it did and it's a done deal.. Moral of the story: 1) Sometimes you just end up getting a lemon 2) You get you what you pay for. With the money I bought my Sony laptop I could've bought 6 (I am not joking) of these laptops.... and neither their service nor their product has ever stopped short of being perfect... I am just sayin'...

With over two years of heavy duty use, it's still working for my wife... The only thing that happened to it was a few days ago when both Enter keys stopped working... Air can sprayed the keys after removing them and nothing helped really. Since both stopped working and not just one, it's got to be either the motherboard or something deep within the keyboard. Took to Geek Squad who couldn't figure it out on the spot and didn't give me much hope. They suggested using an external keyboard, which we bought for it... but then it occurred to me that I had heard of such programs as key re-mapper. Sure enough, downloaded one such program and minutes later I re-mapped one of the keys she never uses on her keyboard to her Enter key. It's not as convenient as the Enter button, but she's so happy that she now has an Enter key that she doesn't care about the location of it! But I'd think in a few month or so, this will be retired...

First of all, this ia a LOT of computer for the price. I've had this computer for two weeks now and it is used several hours each day. I love that the RAM is upgradeable to 8gb, even though it runs beautifully fast with 4gb. The screen is great and I like the non-shiny finish of the screen, so there is no glare at all. The keyboard is the perfect size (for my regular-sized girl hands), and I really prefer the scrolly pad that the Toshibas have over other brands I have used.

This is the third Toshiba laptop in my household. We have absolutely loved all of them. This new one is definitely incredible, and the best of the bunch. The things that I find they all have in common are They stay very cool (I use them all on laptop stands, mostly Rolodex Laptop Stands) and they are beautiful.

The A505-S6973 is no exception. This laptop comes equipped with everything I could possibly need and more hard drive than I will ever use. I didn't find that there was too much junk I had to uninstall...just the usual Norton hogzilla software and some internet type software (netzero) that seems to always come on computers these days. I usually have to spend the better part of the day uninstalling, updating, installing my own security software, and cleaning up. With this laptop I only spent a couple of hours with all of that.

The speed of the processor is wonderful. The premium speakers are quite noticeable as it seems like most mid-range laptops have junky speakers. I would actually listen to music or watch a movie on this one without even having to plug in my headphones.

Lastly, this is one beautiful laptop. The shiny black finish on the exterior top and the inside has a cool, subdued, lined design on it that you don't see in the online pictures. It is sleek and smart looking. It feels solid and well-built. I would not hesitate to recommend this laptop. I have had the best of experiences with every Toshiba brand product I've had over the years and the 3 laptops in my household, now including this one, are stellar in their performance.

This is an excellent buy, and the best deal out there. It's no wonder why it's Amazon's best selling computer.

It's a beauty to behold. Beautiful black finish with just the slightest hint of curvy lined design.

Beautiful keyboard. Love the multimedia touch controls. The Eco feature button is great and easy to reach. The Eco feature easily can give you an additional hour or more of battery life. The 16" screen is bright and gives great color and great for movies. The speakers are awesome for a laptop! And the one thing that was really a surprise...it's super cool, as in the battery doesn't heat up. Everyone was amazed that after hours of use, the battery wasn't hot at all. It may get SLIGHTLY warm on the left..but not too much. If it wasn't, then it would be a near miracle!

With 4G of Ram, run multiple programs at once with no hiccups. On my Dell I couldn't run Outlook, Limewire and Windows Live Messenger without something freezing. This Laptop does it flawlessly. With the huge 500G Hard drive, PLENTY of room for pictures, videos and downloads (movies, games..etc.) My wireless internet on this laptop zooms.

For $649, you CANNOT go wrong! It is the BEST value you are going to get for this price. 4G Ram, 500G Hardrive, 16" HD Screen, excellent speakers, gorgeous styled keyboard and cover, Cool battery making using the laptop comfortable.

If you are looking for a laptop in this price range...this is the best choice, hands down.

The Toshiba A505-S6973 Laptop is a slick, lightweight, very fast machine with an incredibly bright & clear display.

Beware!! This is a "64-bit" version of Windows Vista Home Premium, which made all of my legacy software (Office 2000, FrontPage 2002, etc.) obsolete. My circa 2007 HP 9417 Laptop with Vista Home Premium ran all the legacy software without problems. Unfortunately, the HP computer was a dud, but that is another review... Bottom line I was able to purchase used 2003 software (Office & FrontPage), which seems to work well.

Here are some things I like about the Toshiba A505-S6973..

Excellent Value 4 MBs RAM & 500 GB HDD

Incredibly Fast

The best display of any computer I have seen or used

Great Speakers

Lightweight for its size

Very Lightweight A/C Adapter with a very long cord

Here are some things I do not like about the Toshiba A505-S6973

The Laptop does not have a latch to close the screen. It is only a sprung hinge...

The touch pad is hard to distinguish from the adjacent areas, and the touch-scroll is integrated into the edge of the pad Hard to control

The keyboard has a very light touch and the space bar, enter key, and delete keys are way too small.

The input for the headphone jack is poor Partial connection, static, etc.

If you are planning to purchase or already own current versions of MS Office, etc. this is a great value. If you have legacy software with upgrades from 1997-2000-2002, etc. please beware.

I am not a computer tech type person like a lot of you so i can't give you a detailed review on what this computer does on the inside. I am an everyday computer user and I love this laptop. I have only had HP computers in the past and I took the chance on a Toshiba. I wish I had changed a long time ago. I can't believe the ease of installing programs and my printer. If i didn't know what i was doing a box came up to tell me. This laptop is beautiful and so well made. I can't believe I got it for this price. Everything came working with no problems at all. There wasn't a lot of "stuff" I had to take out before using it. The widescreen is great and I feel like i'm sitting in front of my desktop. I had originally gotten it for my daughter but I am ordering another one for her. I'm now sold on Toshiba. I went to the Toshiba site and filled out forms to get the windows 7 free. I had to upload a copy of the receipt. It said I could mail or fax it if that was easier. They will send me an email when they mail it to me in October. I didn't expect to get such a nice computer for this price.

Acer Aspire 5742Z-4200 Intel Pentium P6100 2.0GHz 2GB 250GB DVDRW WebCam 15.6" W7 Home Black LXR4P0

Acer Aspire 5742Z-4200 Intel Pentium P6100 2.0GHz 2GB 250GB DVDRW WebCam 15.6' W7 Home Black LXR4P02002Seeing as there is not many reviews on this, and I happen to own one, I figured I would give my opinion on this laptop.

I got this laptop as a Christmas present in 2010 to use for general use and college in 2011. This laptop, so far, has held up very well.

The only minor difference between my exact model is that it came with a 300GB HDD and 3GB of ram(which I have upgraded to 6GB).

The laptop is excellent and quick in every day tasks, unfortunately it is now beginning to show some age. I have the free version of Microsoft Office and it can take upwards of 30-40 seconds on first time load (Restarts will go much quicker).

For everyday computing, this will be a good laptop. The screen is very crisp given the resolution. Web surfing and web games are quick and offer no problems.

For reliability, I can see this has been the most reliable, trouble-free computer I've owned. Granted, I take good care of it. It has had only one minor failure when booting one day, then the problem disappeared.

For gaming, you may want to look elsewhere. This laptop CAN game on older games, I can't say the same for newer though.

I regularly play Minecraft, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, and other similar games.

Minecraft will play decently on this laptop, provided you install Optifine and set the graphics mostly to low. I get about 15-30 frames-per-second depending on what's happening.

Left 4 Dead 2: EVERYTHING on low I average about 15-20 fps. Which is decently playable.

Team Fortress 2: Everything on low I get anywhere from 10-30 fps depending on game type. (Man Vs Machine is a FPS killer)

In conclusion, this game will be a good buy for those who do general web surfing or low power apps and maybe the occasional game. However, this is a 2-3 year old budget laptop that is reaching the end of it's life. A year or two ago I would have given this 4 stars, however. It's still a very good computer for those who do light computing, but anything higher than the games I mention will probably not be worthwhile. This computer was not built for that, and is deteriorating rather quickly in today's market.

Don't get me wrong, the laptop is good. Just not good enough given the current price. (350$ for a used, 400+ refurbished) If you're looking for a better laptop to game on, or do anything graphically intense; I recommend going AMD. Their integrated cards are much better than Intel's.

I bought this Acer in need of a large screen for living in Ecuador. I immediately loaded Ubuntu 10.3 on the system. It runs like a dream and never crashes as my HP did before. With a 15.6 inch screen, you will have more than enough desktop space. The memory screams with Linux as a motor. I like the large keyboard for typing, with big fingers, it surely helps. The HD sound card and video card work like a dream. I recommend the Acer 5745 over any HP product out there, it is Linux ready.

MSI A6200-021US Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-430M 2.26 GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 320GB HD

MSI A6200-021US Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-430M 2.26 GHz / 15.6' LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 320GB HD / 802.11b/g/draft n WLAN / DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home PremiumWould recommend this laptop. However, when I purchased it I did not realize it came with 32bit Home Premium Windows 7 and not 64 bit. So I went and purchased 64 bit and reinstalled the OS. Works even better with 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I ran it with 32 bit for a day and for the last few days have had 64 bit windows on it. Screen is great. Can't complain except MSI should clearly state that it comes with 32bit on their packaging. Better yet they should install it with 64bit.

First off this IS IN FACT AN LED SCREEN and...

Not an LCD as this ad and the website of national reailers like Office Depot claim, in Fact if you take a brief trip to the website of MSI they too, confirm this and since buying one last night at my local Office Depot I have confirmed that the info on the MSI website is correct this is once more is an LED display !!!

With that said this unit overall is as good as any laptop I have ever owned, or used from my job. This includes 11 different laptops in the last 14 years from NEC, IBM, HP, Toshiba, Acer and Dell.

The only complaint I could find is that it comes with Windows 7 32 bit instead of 64 bit which is not that much of an issue as most applications do not support 64 bit mode at the moment anyway, however I just don't think it makes much sense to have not used 64 bit.

With all that said a quick review and my first impressions...

1. The screen is excellent, large and beautfiul, great contrast and colors

2. The keyboard is excellent, a little different for someone not used to the chicklet style made popular by Apple, but doe not take long to get used to.

3. The processor is an obvious selling point, it runs cool, consumes less power than any previous high end Intel Processor and Graphics combo !

4. Overall build quality is top notch and for the solid feel it is actually quite light !!!

5. The tochpad is TOP NOTCH and I say that as someone who does not use a mouse, tochpad functionallity is something of a pet peeve for me when buying a laptop, so if you too are someone that finds many of the tochpads out there today not worth a penny..

Rest assured this touchpad works and works well !

Windows Experience Index scoring was as follows

Processor 6.4

Memory 7.2

Graphics 4.6

Gaming Graphics 5.1

Hard Drive 5.3

So as you can see for this is a great laptop with plenty of power to spare !

If you are looking for a 15.6 inch unit that is powerful and more than capable of handling Flash media at 1080P look no further, this will make and excellent unit for developers and would serve well as an all around machine for business oriented users too !

One last thing I forgot is the battery and it out of the box after its first charge I got about 2 1/2 hrs or real time use surfing the web and half the time I was watching an episode of Red Eye on Hulu which is very processor intensive...

So when this company claims 2 1/2 hrs they mean it !

Unlike most companies who will site the number windows show right after unplugging it (HP, DELL, Toshiba) Just to name a few !

If you are wondering that number shown when placing the mouse pointer over the batter icon was showing 4 hrs. 15 min on my unit after first charge !

Hope that helps and I will say agian I could not be happier, you will not regret buying this laptop !

I purchased this laptop for a mere $525 from Amazon last week. I'm thrilled with the performance of the i5 and DDR3 combined with Windows 7. My only complaints about this machine are:

1. Lack of bluetooth despite having a bluetooth LED and function key

2. Trackpad has a vertical scroll bar, but it isn't raised or visible so kind of difficult to use at times.

3. USB and power ports are in the back as opposed to the sides of the machine.

4. Power LEDs are very bright blue, almost distracting at night.

This machine has a great keyboard, tons of power, a really great screen, and it isn't too heavy. I love MSI and I'll continue buying from them in the future. I would recommend the A6200 to anyone in the ~$600 price range.

I am so glad my fiancee convinced me to spend the extra $100 dollars on this laptop (the one I wanted) over a similar Acer with a Core i3 processor. This is hands down the best laptop I have ever owned.

The good:

LED display

Solid build

light weight (5.5 lbs)

full keyboard

HDMI port

bluetooth

EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

Great price $599

The bad:

not very much information online

weak speaker set

no firewire port

I will be recommending this notebook to my family, so obviously i would recommend it to you.

I am so happy with this laptop! It is by far better than the $900 Dell I bought 2 years ago. And I only paid $600. This computer really handles what you throw at it. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone.

The problem with the speakers that everyone is complaining about is summed up to the fact that they put them on the front of the computer so when its sitting on your lap it sounds muffled. While its not exceptional, it wouldn't keep me from purchasing this laptop. I'm actually able to play sims 3 on it and even my desktop won't run it well. It plays perfectly! I'm so happy with this!

Alienware M18x R2 AM18XR2-7778BK 18.4-Inch Laptop (Space Black Anodized Aluminum)

Alienware M18x R2 AM18XR2-7778BK 18.4-Inch LaptopI've known about Alienware for years now, but had only ever known one person who owned one. I knew the reputation, I knew the look, I knew the reviews. So I replaced my 17" VAIO with this behemoth. Let's review.

FIRST: Sleek, black, huge, heavy for a laptop. But this is not the kind of laptop to tuck under your arm and lug around the office; you set it down and PLAY. Same goes for the power supply the thing is comically over-sized. I felt like a hobbit holding it! But with a need for 250W, it has to be that way.

SOUND: Without a doubt, the best and richest sound I've ever heard out of a laptop. Bass is strong, the treble powerful. No tinny, cruddy speakers, these.

HEAT: The advantage to all of that aluminum is excellent heat dissipation. Also, there are dual air intakes and dual exhausts in the back, directing the heat away from you. (Too many laptops vent to the side!) Playing Borderlands 2 at max settings, the laptop got slightly warm but nowhere near the point of discomfort. So it may weigh down your lap, but it won't singe your short-n-curlies.

THE ALIEN FACTOR: Sexy light schemes, MASSIVELY configurable touchpad, set of bonus keys for gaming on the left side of the keyboard, tons of peripheral slots. They know their audience.

PERFORMANCE: This is difficult to rate, because nothing I could do was the least bit challenging to the system. "Crysis 3, maximum settings? YAWN. Tell me when you have some DIFFICULT software to run." You are going to have 1-2 years after buying this system of total max-settings freedom. No lag, drag, or latency doing anything.

DOWNSIDE: Hardly any. The worst thing I could find in this laptop was Windows 8.

SUMMARY: Go big or go home. If you don't mind the heaviness of this game-eating monster, there are no downsides, there is no competition, you WILL be assimilated.

I bought a M18x-R2 in October of 2012. I was very impressed with the laptop, It is heavy, but I'm not carrying it on an airplane so I don't care. I use this computer to replace my HP 18in laptop (no longer made) that ran so hot that it would turn off from overheating and almost burn my hand near the exhaust. The Alienware lets out very little heat and makes very little noise. The screen color is brilliant. The one problem that I had, was that when I tapped on the keys, the cursor would jump all over the screen, very frustrating. After talking to support 3 times I finally found out that there was a tap to click option on the touch-pad, once that was turned off the problem disappeared, and the computer has run great ever since. Support did a good job of taking over my computer to fix the problem, all I had to do was watch them make all the changes necessary. The computer needless to say is very fast, and runs my programs well.

Samsung Series 3 NP305E5A-A06US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue Silver)

Samsung Series 3 NP305E5A-A06US 15.6-Inch LaptopPurchased for a fourteen year old girl for her birthday. I had given her a Dell netbook a few months earlier and needed to atone for that sin. I unloaded unwanted software and installed the Office and antivirus programs i had spare licenses for, tested same. Created backup of fully loaded system prior to deployment (her birthday). Worked so flawlessly I wanted to keep it for myself. Looks good inside and out. Recipient extremely happy. For her diet of homework, Facebook and Maple Story it may be too much computer, but after the netbook fiasco the power surplus was greatly appreciated. May still get one for myself.

I bought this notebook for my daughter for her first year of college her key criteria were a good display and a large hard drive. To that I added: a relatively fast machine (higher RAM) and a relatively newer processor. This combination requirement was well satisfied by this laptopfurther, it had a full size keyboard, including a separate num pad (lacked by equally priced HP and Dell laptops.

The sleek, dual-colour design and the depiction of the screen nudged it over a competing Lenovo machine, which had similar specs and was available for the same price.

I set up the machine for her and I was very satisfied with the workhorse nature of the machine the keys are solid and one can learn to touch-type on it pretty fast. The processor is fast enough and there are no "hangs" while playing movies. Sound quality on the native speakers could have been better. The machine comes with some Samsung utilities pre-loaded but not a whole lot of bloatware or junk.

I did not test out any video resource hungry games on it given that my daughter doesn't play any of those!

Bottomline: Highly recommended for daily, standard use and media playing

the computer is nice. my son says. but the adapter broke, after 5 weeks. Samsung Customer Service says send in the whole computer, let them check it out, and then fix what needs to be fixed. Not really convenient, and a great deterrent of using the warranty service. so, bit the bullet and paid for new adapter cable myself.

generally, laptop adapters do break down relatively fast/often, and I always have a number of them around, and in different locations, so that I cut out excessive wear and tear on those fragile adapters. I have seen them get extremely hot and have meltdown after 2 weeks. But for this one, proprietary to samsung, to break down within such a short amount of time is not encouraging. (looks to the untrained eye that bad soldering was the problem.)

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 43752BU 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 43752BU 13.3-Inch UltrabookI did a good bit of research on laptops before making a purchase, went into stores, read reviews, etc. A few comments.

A number of people note how the screens are flexible, go into a store and try bending screens, all thin laptops are quite flexible. Seems odd to me too, but if everyones doing it, it must work.

I saw a few reviews about wireless problems with the u310, but saw many other good review so I disregarded. Don't disregard. There is a detailed summary at .

Seems to be that lenovo figured out the wifi was really bad, but kept selling units and just fixed it on the new ones. I bought my laptop on Sept 20, it was manufactured on May 28, the fix didn't come out until July 23... The date is printed at the bottom of the tag on the outside of the box, so if you buy in a store you can check.

In my case, the speed seemed not great to me, but the range was terrible. I got maybe 50 feet from the router before I lost signal. Even my phone (which I think has pretty bad reception for wifi) was better than that. I decided to go into work and see if I could pick up signal at my desk and couldn't ... back to the store we go. I read lots of reviews of 2-3 weeks for repairs and the problem not fixed, didn't sound like what I wanted to do with a brand new laptop.

Aside from the wifi issues, it was a great unit, solid build, really nice touchpad, good keyboard, screen was fine. I suppose some people might only use a machine at home, but for anyone that travels around, I think the wifi problems makes this machine a no-buy.

I wasnt expect the building quality is so wonderful, very cool very solid!

The old wifi signal problem is fixed now, I've tested it intensively use on varies conditions comparing to my thinkpad laptop, iphone, ipad, etc. People who are interested in this laptop shouldn't worry about it now.

but the battery life is not that great. It is advertised as 7h which is not quite possible.

under normal usage of wifi and multimedia, I got about 4h battery life.

I just received my Lenovo U310 and my first impressions are that it is stylish and lightweight. When I started playing around with the laptop, I figured that the mouse pad, though responsive and accurate, makes an awkward clicking sound every time I tap on the pad. No, I am not talking about left or right clicks, just tap of the finger in the middle of the pad! I figured this is because the mouse pad does not have separate left and right click buttons, but the whole mouse pad tilts/depresses to make the click.

Also, one thing that I did not know when ordered this laptop is that the RAM is maxed out at 4 GB for this laptop and no, you cannot upgrade RAM because there are no more empty slots left. This laptop has only one slot with 4 GB max rating! In this day and age where 8 GB RAM is quickly becoming a norm, I never thought there are computers that are restricted to 4 GB RAM with only one slot!

I did notice slightly noisy cooling fan, but I read that it is a common feature for all ultrabooks. So, I can live with it.

Anyway, the performance so far has been good and I will update the review once I get a chance to try more features. For the price I paid ($653.99, after $100 Amazon gift card), I think this laptop offers high end features compared any other laptop on the market today.

Long story short the product has a manufacturer's issues with the wireless adapter. It is acknowledged by their rep on the lenovo support message boards, but was not communicated broadly to everyone who had purchased one. That is, they are trying to hide it instead of issuing a recall. I called their support and it will take two full weeks to ship back and get it serviced and returned (in the US). Do not buy this computer.
