Lenovo ThinkPad X1 (129126U) 13.3" LED Notebook - Core i5 i5-2520M 2.50GHz - 4G DDR3 320G HDD (Wind

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 13.3' LED Notebook - Core i5 i5-2520M 2.50GHz - 4G DDR3 320G HDD - BlackI rarely ever write reviews but i needed to for this one. I bought this laptop directly from Lenovo and recieved it about 3 weeks ago. I am constantly traveling and was tired of lugging my 18.5" hp wherever I went. This laptop is very light. One of the best features in this laptop is its keyboard. The keyboard is the best that i have used to date, it has no flex when typing, the keys are backlit, and they have just the right amount of resistence when pressed (also the keyboard is spillproof). The ThinkVantage suite is very nice as well, usually i would not use any software that is preinstalled by the manufacturer but it is very intuitive. Also no bloatware so when you finish setting up your computer it is actually ready to go and you do not need to remove a lot of crap applications. This computer is very fast including great startup and sleep times as well. Some people may complain about the battery not being user replaceable but you really dont need it with the new technology they put into the laptop it usually lasts me 4 to 5 hours depending on what im doing and if i need to i can get the 80% charge in 30 minutes which actually rings true to the claims. The security of this computer is very good. The fingerprint scan works even when the computer is off, you just scan your finger and it will skip the log on screen. Another noteable security feature is the camera if it does not detect human presence for you set amount of time it will automaticly lock the computer. Also worth mentioning is the screen is very very bright and makes things alot easier to see.

My only complaint is that the ctrl and FN keys are in the opposite places that they usually are its not a big deal but you do have to get used to it if you use lots of shortcuts like myself.

The best part about this laptop by far is the support. I found 2 dead pixels near the edge of the screen so i called lenovo and within 3 button clicks i actually had a real person and there was no wait time at all.(thinkpads have seperate support from the other lines of laptops) The support is in atlanta so you can actually understand what they say and in less than 10 minutes everything was done. they are sending me a prepayed box and they also let me defer my shipment by 2 weeks because of work. This is the best support i have ever had from any company by far. Very kind and polite operators. lenovo ThinkPad will recieve all of my future laptop purchases (i am comparing the products and services to that of Dell, HP, and Sony with which i have expierience with).

I highly recommend this laptop. You won't be dissapointed with this or the ThinkPad support.

I ordered this laptop after I returned an S-Series Vaio that had a mechanical failure. The service Sony offered to repair and replace it was underwhelming, and the S-Series laptop had horrible speakers that were not powerful enough to allow one to clearly hear the audio for online videos.

I was looking for something for my work and home use light, portable, able to to take some abuse as it is carried back and forth. The X1 Think Pad is a great laptop super thin, great keyboard, tough body, and comes with Windows 7 without a lot of extra software installed.

My only criticisms of this laptop are -

1) speakers are loud enough, but not great audio quality they are close to the best you will find in laptop of this size, but that isn't saying much.

2) I use the microphone for dictation I've found some issues with voice clarity for my transcriptionists more than with other laptops I've used.

3) The mouse buttons are built into the cursor pad, and I wish they were separate for some reason this appears to be an issue when I wish to scroll down on a webpage it's more difficult to compress and hold the hidden mouse buttons than with most other laptops.

I like that this is a business laptop The S-Series Vaio looked like it was suited for a high school or college student, not a professional. The X1's Thinkpad logo w/ Red dot is a little uncool, but overall I like the feel of it. I anticipate that this machine will take what I throw at it. The quick charging battery is a great feature, as is the gorilla glass screen my toddler hasn't destroyed it yet, but certainly has tried.

I just received my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 and I'm in absolute awe with this system. Its look & feel has been attracting comments from all that see me working with it. I'm amazed with the quality construction, the level of detail and the design. This is definetely the new look for the ThinkPad brand. I personally love the keyboard with its soft keys and the glass, with extended view and clear picture. Wow! I love this system.

HP ENVY DV7T-7200 Quad Core, IntelĀ® CoreTM i7-3630QM, Full HD Anti-glare LED 1080p Display, 2TB Dual Hard Drives GDDR5 Gaming LaptopThis is the perfect laptop for gammers (or anyone). It has a massive storage (2tb) and is preloaded with windows 8. What I love about it most is the fingerprint scanner! No more hassles of signing on, just slide your finger across the scanner and you are logged in! It is super fast and the screen is big and so clear! I was leery of the windows 8, but I am finding that it will do everything that 7 does, plus so much more. This is a bargain for the price!

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Laptop Computer Convertible Tablet - Intel Core i5-3320M (3M Cache, up to 3.30

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Laptop Computer Convertible Tablet - Intel Core i5-3320MI am badly disappointed in my Lenovo X230 Tablet. I received it and set about adding my standard programs with high expectations. At each shut down I had the standard messages from Microsoft updates asking not to shut down until the updates were complete. I had other updates run automatically. The result was the touchpad and fingerprint reader stopped working. After three calls to Lenovo Tech Support, many more updates of drivers, the system was not useable. I wiped the disk twice, reinstalled from the Lenovo resue disk, but again updates were required and I did them and had the same problem. It's not worth the time and trouble! Also, the edges of the touchscreen area are not sensitive and a finger touch will not pull out the menu nor will the pen in done cases.

Buyer beware of buying the new model until all updates are through being made.

Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5034 Notebook PC

Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5034 Notebook PCI had an HP laptop in the past. My office laptop is a dell laptop. I was sick of the quality of those laptops and looking for something that is reliable. I am hoping this one is better. This laptop has very good looks. The finish looks awesome. Extra keys on the keyboards for the numbers help. Media buttons (no one really uses them) are not given. I bought a 3 year warranty from squaretrade for just 80$ (3 years). Do no buy warranty from this website. I am loving this laptop for the price I paid (510 after 15% bing cashback bought on ) With windows 7 (4GB and i3 processor) the laptop boots very fast, detects the wireless network and is ready for surging in less than a minute. Cons: The only thing I have found (like everybody else) is the sound system. It is horrible.

HP Pavilion dv5-2130us 14.5-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 5.45 Hours of Battery Life (Blue)

HP Pavilion dv5-2130us 14.5-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 5.45 Hours of Battery LifeWell after seeing the first few not so favorable reviews, i was a little circumspect regarding the purchase..but i have been using it for a little over 2 days now and i cant be happier!!

First, regarding the highly debated touchpad, i did not find any issues with it.It takes some getting used to, but after a little time you feel comfortable with it. I also bought a cute little 2.4G Nano Wireless Blue Optical/light Mouse Set with Dpi Switch Black (800-1200 DPI)wireless mouse from Amazon . It will be very useful for those who are not comfortable with the touchpad.

Other than this, rest all seem good, pictures and videos are clear and crisp, intel i3 processor makes the laptop fast and zippy. For 615 bucks..its well worth the money.. :)

i'm sorry for the bad experience the other reviewers had but i must say that i am fairly happy with my DV5.

in addition, the backlit keyboard is a very nice touch, HP!

the performance: well... neither overwhelming nor underwhelming: just a good and reliable laptop. i am not a gamer and am using it for 'basic' computing and it is doing what it is supposed to do. in fact the overall feel is actually very solid and sturdy. in short: a workhorse with a solid built.

on another note: HP seems to have gotten rid of all the bloatware i used to experience in the past. instead this model came supplied with a license for microsoft office. nice touch!

speaking of "touch": i am usually more a tablet kinda gal and had good experiences with HP's touchsmart line including their tablets.

also and despite some bad reviews, my experience with HP's consumer service has been pleasant. it even exceeds what i had to experience with apple (who will btw only service you for 'so long' [first 3 months]... or for additional money... or as long as your purchased "protection plan" lasts).

I've had this computer as a work tool for over 2 years. All my co-workers have it and we all love it. We do have to plug in, but that hasn't been a problem. We are homevisitors and we carry it in the cars rain or shine, freezing or hot weather. We work in a tall building, carry it in, up and down everyday. Goes to meetings, out of town. Etc.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE15134CXS 15.5-Inch Laptop (Silver)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE15134CXS 15.5-Inch LaptopExactly as described. I adore it. Best Microsoft windows laptop in my opinion. I love the look of it and windows 8 is pretty awesome as well. Its not as hard to operate as people have been saying it is. i just got my laptop today and im already used to it. lol. You still have the original desktop to so theres nothing different except the setup in the begining. And if you order this laptop on amazon. i suggest getting it through amazon and go about the free shipping they offer when you buy more then one thing over 25 dollars. my estimated shipping was for next week and i ordered it on monday. Waaaay earlier then expected which is even better! So, if your thinking about getting this laptop, go for it! Deffinetly worth it and its different in a good way from the rest. :3

I deliberately waited a few months to write a review on this so I had time to truly discover what I did and did not like about this laptop.

The Operating System

A big difference to me was made by Windows 8. I'll be honest, I don't much like the OS. It takes me a good few minutes to find certain programs that I could find in seconds on XP or Windows 7. Also the OS seems to have a function that works through the mousepad that minimizes the function or game you are on and snaps back to the desktop it's pretty annoying when gaming so I use a separate mouse for that. It just seems like the OS missed the mark in anticipating the needs of people using it. My mother has the same laptop and she made the same comment to me just recently, and she's not a gamer! So truly, gamer or not, you may find Windows 8 a bit of a pain, at least until you get used to it. The system also comes with Kaspersky Internet security 2013 which is a great anti-virus/security system.

The Laptop

The laptop itself is a dream! The keys are lit from below so you can even use it in the dark without the need to switch a nearby lamp on. The 'Fn' key works like a shift to enable your F-keys to adjust thinks like brightness and sound, meaning they casn be used as regular F-keys in games (I had a previous laptop where you had to press 'Fn' to use those keys as F keys, so I greatly appreciate this!).

The laptop is desinged around you shutting the lid to place it into a power-saving mode, so most of the time you will never need to shut down. The manufacturer claims it can be left in this mode for up to 2 days unplugged, although I've only tested it for about a day. When you open the lid the laptop is ready in seconds, so it saves a lot of time setting up overall.

While the main reason I bought the laptop was for Skyping with family in England, (the built-in webcam and mic are what I looked for) I do spend a lot of time gaming. The laptop runs Star Wars: The Old Republic very smoothly. I also play APB Reloaded and Stat Trek Online with no problems, and at high graphics settings. In choosing this laptop I looked for system specs that would run the new Sim City game, though I haven't bought that yet! All of these games run smoothly and the laptop hardly even gets warm. The fan system works very well indeed!

Overall

The OS is a pain sometimes but you can live with it. The benefits of how this laptop runs and works and the fact that it hasn't run into anything it can't handle far outweigh the few niggling problems I've had with Windows 8. I couldn't bring myself to rate this laptop less than 5 stars and my wife will tell you I've spent every spare minute on it since it arrived! If you're prepared to spend a little more than the average cheap-end $400 laptops, this one is great value for money.

I have owned this lap top less than a month and I have decided to return it. It suddenly crashes, the error says "the computer ran into some kind of a problem and needs to be restarted". It would not be a problem if it happened once in a month or so, however it happens every other day. I have ordered a replacement. I hope the new one will not have this problem again.

There are a lot of features on this laptop that make it pretty amazing, but there of course, some cons to it.

First of all, Windows 8 is really easy to learn, especially if you have used a tablet or Ipad. On the Windows 8 main start-up screen, you have the option to change your Icons. One of the Icons is a "Desktop" button, and will take you to the normal view of a desktop (which looks like Windows 7 or Vista start-up screen). This "Desktop" button comes in handy when you are learning Windows 8. I have also learned that certain functions only work on the Windows 8 start-up and certain functions only work on the "Desktop" screen. Windows 8 start-up allows you to use your track pad like that of a MacBook track pad (meaning, you can use two fingers to scroll up and down and side ways), whereas on the regular desktop you cannot. On the regular "desktop" screen, you can use Adobe, but on Windows 8 you cannot. Therefore, while learning Windows 8 is easy, and the screen looks pretty awesome, it can be confusing to figure out what functions you can use on which screen (it's almost like having 2 different laptops, with all the same data).

Something that comes in handy on the laptop is how easy it is to toggle between the screens. On the left corner of the screen, you can access a small screen of each tab you have used on the laptop. (To close these, you click on the one you want, put your mouse pointed at the top of the screen, click and drag down).

I've gotten many compliments on the color of the laptop. I occasionally feel like if Barbie had a laptop, this is the laptop she would have. But, it has a very beachy look to it.

One thing I REALLY love about this laptop, it has the second set of numbers on the keyboard (like a desktop keyboard). More on the keyboard: The letters and numbers appear bigger than on most laptops and keyboards, so it is easy to see each thing. The letters, however are not in the middle of the buttons, but rather on the left upper corners (kinda quirky, I think). The keyboard lights up (like a MacBook keyboard). The only thing I find rather interesting is how the keyboard it put together. I've only had my laptop for a week, and I've noticed that the piece that covers the laptop keyboard is a very soft and feels cheaply made. Now in defense of the laptop company itself, I understand that a lighter material was probably needed, because it has a backlit keyboard, and the heat from the lights could potentially lead to overheating (at least that is the only deductible reasoning I could come up with). I like the quick keys on the keyboard, and I like the overall function of the keyboard.

One thing that may get annoying in the future, is the track pad. Where the track pad has cool functions and is fairly easy to use, it jumps around a pretty fair amount. I found it clicking on things I do not click on. I haven't found a way to control this either.

But overall, the computer is pretty awesome.

HP Pavilion g7-2124nr Notebook PC

HP Pavilion g7-2124nr Notebook PCThis is only $615.39 on the HP store if you are a student.

This laptop successfully does everything I need it to do:

Video Chat on GChat

Stream Breaking Bad from NetFlix

Play BluRay Quality movies on my 46" Television (via HDMI)

The main tradeoff is that it's huge. So, It's ridiculous to take anywhere outside your home. But, the plus side of its size is the high resolution. So, you have enough room on your screen to have two windows split the foreground.

Compared to the most popular computer in the market, the 13" Macbook Pro:

Same CPU

6GB vs. 4GB (Memory)

640GB vs. 500 GB (Disk)

17.3" vs. 13.3" (Screen)

1600x900 vs 1280x800 (Resolution)

Same Resolution Webcam

$729.99 vs. $1,199.99 (Price without discounts)

It meets or beats all of the main specs of the best-selling MacBook Pro, which serves as a good benchmark for a standard computer these days, does everything an average computer user uses a computer for, and you can get it for $615 to $729 depending on whether you go to school or not.

Apple iBook 12.1" G4 (1.33 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, Combo Drive, OS 10.4.11)

Apple iBook 12.1' G4I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

This iBook G4 GREAT for typical web-surfing, email, word/spreadsheet/office work, and for doing 95% of what most computer users want in a portable. It is compact and powerful. I've used one for several years for trips and weekendsI can keep up on email, play music, even watch a movie on it (DVD player built in)..

The 1.33ghz has built-in WIFI and bluetooth, so my external keyboard works perfectly with it, and I use it in any coffee shops or WIFI zones while travelling.

The weakest point (in my perspective) is that it's not a powerhouse processor. If you're thinking of making movies on it, you're going to find yourself spending a good bit of time. But for 95% of what people do on laptops, this thing ROCKS! The battery life ranges I've seen 45 minutes, and with a brand new battery 3.5hrs. i'm also a super power-user, so I generally "run the wheels off" anything I use.. so comparatively you might see it last a wee bit better..

The comparison to a netbook is very true. And this thing actually has a hard drive! and, what's best: if you lose it or it gets stolen, you're not out $1300 --the purchase price is very reasonable by comparison. I know a handful of folks with these 12" 1.33's, and they all love them.

ASUS S405CA-RH51 14.1" Notebook PC

ASUS S405CA-RH51 14.1' Notebook PCthis ultrabook is so thin and so beautifully manufactured by Asus. the aluminum shell simply feels good by touching. it looks so modern inside and out. It's very fast, very quiet and so cool if compares to my other 17" dell studio. it got everything i needed, hdmi, usb, dvd player. the a/c adapter has very very long cable/wire on each side which makes me easier to plug into a remote power source. the long audio/stereo speakers located so nicely on top edge of the keyboard and right below the monitor which allow the beautiful sound to spread forward to you. the volume is so loud and powerful that you have to use your audio/video player's volume adjust bar to lower it. i have become a fan and loyal user of asus since i bought their eee transformer. love it(them) very very much, neither ever gave me any trouble at all. if you don't want to pay outrageous prices for the similar sized Apple, this ultra notebook is what you should consider.

again, love it and again, why i have to buy an Apple to satisfy my vanity?

The laptop is ok, but the most annoying thing is the fan noise, may be the noise comes from the HDD, I don't know.

I compared it with my old thinkpad and HP one, this one's noise is much sharper, although not very loud.

Checked with the seller, decided to keep it otherwise I need to pay 15% processing fee which is about 80 bucks.

So I contact Amazon to inform them the laptop is defective. Amazon passes the buck to the seller, Adorama. Adorama then passes the buck to the manufacturer, Asus. Asus tells me to send in the laptop for repair. Laptop is returned, still defective. I send it in a second time. Asus still has it, and the only reason I found out they still have it is because I contacted them and asked where is my $645 defective Asus laptop, and they said they are waiting on parts parts? Yikes, for a laptop? Does not sound promising. Overall, I am disappointed with Amazon, Adorama, and Asus. All have failed me miserably, and I still don't have a working laptop, over a month after I placed the initial order.

This is a really nice computer. It's pretty thin and it's got power. The build quality is neither the best nor the worst I've had.

It comes with Windows 8, but if you turn on the legacy mode in the bios you can upgrade to Windows 7.

HP Blu-ray 17.3' Laptop G7-2246NR 6GB DDR3 500GB HDD HDMI USB 3.0 WebCam ATI RADEON HD 7520G with 3GB Dedicated Memory Windows 8 64-bitthis is a very nice laptop.I have the windows 7 model. It is extremely fast.Boots up in seconds and the video quailty is beautiful.I do not have the problems that other people are posting. One problem everyone has is with the power dvd movie player software. The software has a problem playing some bluray dvds. This a major problem with power dvd software version 9 and 10 and 11 and 12.Everyone all over the net is posting problems.Best bet is to use another brand of bluray movie player software.Best feature of this laptop is the hp restore feature. When you re-boot,hold the f-8 key and it takes you to the hp restore feature page. You can restore the whole system or just the sound system or just the video drivers ect.If you retsore the whole system do a minimal restore and all the bloatware is not put on the machine.warnong though:you can only use this feature apx 6 times. After that hp wants you to buy another restore disc. The bass is very good. You need to go into the sound settings and adjust the bass, treble, and volume level ect. Also power dvd has sound settings you must adjust to get the best sound. All in all, this is one of the best laptops i have had so far except for my sager 17" gaming laptop, lol. One last note:i bought this machine used. The person selling listed this machine for parts only for $50.His headphones stopped working and he took it to a shop and they said he needed a new motherboard for apx 400.I gave him the $50 and drove down to frys electronics and bought a high quality usb headphones and they work great.

This computer is a great deal for the specs: 17.3" screen, 6gb RAM, USB 3.0, 500gb HDD, very good integrated graphics for a laptop. I can play most games on medium settings.

This laptop is fast, has a great display and plenty of hard drive space.

Cons:

The speakers have no base and the sound stopped working for me on one occasion, I restarted the computer and the sound worked.

The fan is a little loud at times

Windows 8 doesn't function as well as I hoped it would, I still like Windows 7 more... I mainly don't like the navigation issues and the corner icons disappearing when I try to access them or appear when I'm trying to click something else in that corner. Although the windows button is quite useful for navigation on Windows 8.

I ordered this laptop from ocean reef electronics a little over a month ago and had the misfortune of being busy with work for a few weeks before I had a chance to check it out. it was sent to me with the following three problems, first it has a crap battery that will not hold a charge, second the sound is completely busted and last every other time I log in the computer reboots itself. im sure the computer itself would be fine from any other source but ocean reef is seemingly unknowledgeable of the products they sell so I wrote this to warn other potential buyers. ocean reef electronics has no issues against selling broken goods and the only thing worse than their goods is their extremely poor customer service. I will never order anything from them again and I encourage everyone to save themselves the trouble and do the same.

Dell D610 Pentium M 1.73GHz 512MB 40GB CDRW/DVD 14.1' XP HOMEHIGHLY SATISFIED!!! I bought my refurbished from MawishInc for about 5 months ago and it has been amaizing. I'm surprised that the price on this item just keeps on getting lower and lower. I got mine with 1gb of ram but I upgrade it to 2gb and it's a super fast computer. Much faster then any of my vista computers with more ram and ghz. The monitor is small on today's HD stuff, but the graphics card is amazing. Mine can go up to 1920x1200 with no lag on any monitor. With my shipment, I got this item with the charger and all the slots in this item worked, and still works... (thank you MawishInc). I recommend this product. (maybe not used but professionally refurbished).

The seller was cool, machine worked rite outta the box, turned it on, it found my wi-fi, BANG Im online. What more can Thee say.

Hewlett Packard WA606UAABA Hp G71-449wm Intel 2.10ghz 4gb 320gb Dvd/rw 17.3 WindowsI found nearly 60 positive reviews (average 4.8 stars) for this computer on the Walmart website, so I ordered it through Amazon to save money. So far, a week later, this computer is just as advertised. The screen is great, the features are great also. Be sure to make your recovery disks early, however. They take awhile, and that's a Windows 7 issue, not an issue with this computer. I'd buy it again, and will update this review as I get more experience with it. See the Walmart reviews.

HP Pavilion dv6-3163nr Entertainment Notebook PC - Silver

HP Pavilion dv6-3163nr Entertainment Notebook PC - SilverIn short, no problems at all after 4 days of intense Windows updating (including Win7 SP1), loading many applications and transferring tens of gigabytes of photos, music and other files. I've had no blue screens at all, and I'm finally getting the trackpad adjusted to the way I want it. Overall, the laptop works as advertised, but I can't say that it really exceeds my expectations, so I give it 4 stars.

When my trusty old home laptop died suddenly a few days ago, I needed to quickly find a replacement, so my choices were limited to a laptop I could either buy locally or have shipped to me within a day or two at the most. My chief criteria were a graphics card tested with Photoshop CS5 and a processor that would handle Photoshop and Lightroom for a few years to come, such as an Intel i5 or i7. Also, I didn't want to spend more than $1000 for a moderately powerful, minimum frills laptop.

Pros:

Nice display, although very narrow range of view for consistent colors. That is, tilting the screen quickly makes colors lighter or darker.

Has worked flawlessly with no crashes, hangs or bluescreens in 4 days of intense updating.

It is plenty fast enough for me.

There are lots of HP apps loaded, but they are not the obnoxious trialware loaded by many manufacturers. On the other hand, the HP MediaSmart software is largely superfluous if you have iTunes.

It does have eSATA and HDMI ports as well as a fingerprint reader.

Cons:

The color is described as silver, but it is actually what is usually called "champagne", or even a little darker, almost a light copper color. Also, the cover and palmrest are engraved with a horizontal pattern which I find to be unnecessary but not objectionable.

As reviewers of other HP laptops have noted, the wide trackpad can be prone to spurious movements from contact with one's palms. However, those can be greatly reduced by various settings of the Synaptics device driver. Plus, the trackpad can be turned off and on with a double tap to one of the corners. However, it is odd that this is the first laptop of several that I've owned where the trackpad is an issue. I was worried at first, but am OK with it now.

Documentation is the worst of any PC I've ever bought. All that is included is a quick start brochure which has a reference to some documentation loaded on the laptop, but I guess that's the new normal these days.

No software disks are included, but a reinstallation DVD can be created.

Neutral:

The Altec speakers are nothing special and sound like what you would expect from speakers that have a quarter inch by half inch metallic opening. I would have greatly preferred an S/PDIF optical output, which are quite cheap these days, to these "premium" speakers.

That's it for now. I'll update this review after I have a week or two of further experience.

UPDATE: After almost 4 weeks with this laptop, there are no major revelations. It works well with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, Word and Excel, and web browsing with Google Chrome. I still have not had a single bluescreen or other system hang or crash. My only reservation continues to be the trackpad which I have found to require a bit of conscious thought to avoid spurious pointer movements. As I've said, that is a first for me, and I've used laptops since 1986 (that one had two floppy drives and no hard disk--my boss was cheap). So I do not recommend this laptop for anyone who plans to do a lot of writing on it, such as a college student. For other purposes, it will probably do fine.

I had to send back the first one I got because the harddrive was having issues: it would blue screen, load things slow, random hangs, the whole nine yards. To top that one off, some of the siding/panel wasn't um... "put together" properly, so it had an overall look of "broken". I send it back, and get a new laptop within two days which astonishes me. New laptop works 100x better than the last.

Pros:

It's a beast. Whatever you want to run, it'll run it. It's more than capable of running CAD programs or video editing software. Runs modern games at some pretty modest "medium" settings too.

Screen is nice and big, with a nice look to it. The max brightness is almost BLINDING though, but I find that a good thing.

Keyboard is spacious. Some keys can be a hassle to press down sometimes, but you break it in.

USB ports on BOTH sides, with an eSATA/USB combo as well.

Slick CD drive.

Enjoyable speakers. Get a little distorted at higher volumes, but that was expected.

Looks cool. Always a pro.

Cons:

Battery life. For heavens sake, BATTERY LIFE. You'll have to downgrade ALL your performance for battery life, and even then you can get maybe an hour and a half of constant run time.

Track pad. Pick one left click or right click. You can only do one at a time. It's a HUGE track pad too. Easily avoidable with a mouse though.

"Function Keys" are annoying. I'm not sure if I can switch it or not, but I dislike the fact that I have to hold down "fn" to press F1-F12.

Gets hot. Real hot. Invest in a laptop cooler or laptop pad if you plan on doing load-intense programs or gaming. With heat brings TERRIBLE performance problems.

Weight. I'm going to have back problems the more I need to bring this to school with all my books/notebooks for the day.

Sometimes it fails to POST. Never a good thing. Not sure why it does that, but it did it with the laptop I sent back too, so I hope it's nothing as serious as that. Probably a motherboard that doesn't do too well in general, so keep an eye out for that.

For an everyday school laptop, this doesn't really do too well. As a mobile work station, this works PERFECTLY. If you're buying this for legitimate work programs and school programs or even the occasional game, go for it. If you're not into that stuff and need something for just writing and browsing, you may want to steer away.

Since day one the graphic card (ATI Radeon 5650) keeps on crashing. I can't watch an complete movie without getting a black screen that requieres restarting the system if I still want to see the movie.

Appart form that, the PC overheats to a point where it is almost impossible to touch the area around the cooler with your hand. You can buy something better for this money (uness you are looking for a new oven).

I definitely recommend not buying.

bought this for college with the xbox 360 and it looks great but i hate the keyboard i can never find the right keys im always putting my hands on the wrong spot. the touch pad is extremely hard to push. the screen has a limited viewing angle. the battery last 2 hours MAX. it will over heat very easy as expected with the i7 core and graphics card but still. all in all its reliable and it does what its supposed to do so thats why i gave it a 4 stars.

Apple MacBook Pro MD212LL/A 13-Inch Laptop with Retina Display (Newest Version)

Apple MacBook Pro MD212LL/A 13-Inch Laptop with Retina DisplayFirst, some context. I'm 64, with a 64-year-old man's eyesight. I live on my computer -Internet and word processing. I am a retired professor (Rutgers). I'm a born again blogger, I write books, and I run a minuscule publishing house.

I like writing in all rooms of my home. My study, at the kitchen table, sitting up in bed, on a counter in the basement. I prefer a laptop to a desktop. In my study, I have two computers going at once. One is a Windows (XP) desktop with an excellent 21" screen. The other is an Apple laptop. (Yes, I use both Windows & Apple simultaneously, on two separate computers. Both have virtues.)

For the past year, my laptop has been a Macbook Air (MBA) 13.3", bought new, here at Amazon. I have loved it. Those of you who own an MBA know what I'm talking about -and this review is aimed chiefly at MBA users. Last spring, I tried the Macbook Pro 15" Retina, and returned it. Too large, too heavy, too expensive, and not enough programs and sites were Retina-ready. I never regretted returning it. My MBA was the ideal laptop for me. I had found the "perfect" laptop.

Till a month ago, when I began reading reviews of the Macbook Pro 13.3" Retina (rMBP 13.3). "Hmm," I thought, "this baby might be worth trying. It's smaller than the 15", lighter, and I'm getting hints from reviewers that the display is perhaps better than the 15"." I ordered it, got it set up, and was soon in love -except it had a (slight) flaw. (Trackpad was janky; it rattled when tapped.) I sent it back.

No, I did not immediately order a replacement. I wanted to ponder whether the rMBP 13.3 was truly a significant improvement -for me -over the MBA. Days went by. I read articles online about the narcotic effect of owning Apple computers. ("Yes, Virginia, there is something called Apple Syndrome. Apples are just so darn good, in every respect, that Homo sapiens is neuro-physiologically incapable of resisting them. Like the fabled apple in the Adam & Eve story. You bite into the Apple "apple" and you experience, in person, in the flesh, the Fall of Mankind into an unimagined world of computer perfection. Yes, it is a full-blown seduction, and, yes, it's worth it.") "Have I become an Apple addict," I asked myself? (It didn't make things easier when my wife, a psychiatrist, assured me I was indeed an Apple addict.)

By the end of the week, I knew the answer. No, I was not an Apple addict; I have demonstrated the strength of character to resist Apple's "apple" in the past, and, by golly, I could do it again. Furthermore, upon considerable reflection (I'm a PhD; we reflect a lot) I concluded that the rMBP 13.3 was worth the money. I knocked on my wife's study door, sat down, and made my case. Brilliantly, I add. She came around.

The rMBP 13.3 arrived the next day. I made the right choice. This is a vast improvement over the MBA -and that's the real purpose of this review. Retina is fabulous. Retina is a quantum leap over everything else. Now, lots of programs and sites are Retina-configured. All my voluminous research notes have been converted to PDF's, and I spend hours reading them. Now, reading PDF's using the onboard Preview utility is a dream. Even scanned PDF's read extremely well. I can read for hours & hours and my eyes don't get tired. It's like reading a book.

There's more. The text is larger on the screen in the rMBP than the MBA. This had become a major drawback, for me, with my MBA: screen text (that is, non-adjustable text) was just too small. This is not the case with the rMBP; it is a delight to read with my aging eyes.

I said, above, that I have two computers going at the same time -a big desktop PC and my Apple laptop. The screen on the rMBP seems as large as my 21" monitor, for some reason. I'll leave it to others to explain why this is so -but it is.

The weight of the rMBP is comparable to the MBA. Only slightly heavier. The size is nearly the same. (I believe the rMBP is slightly smaller in footprint than the MBA.) The battery-charge lasts longer on the rMBP than the MBP -easily over 7 hours, for me. Like the MBA, the rMBP recharges rapidly, and it turns on and off rapidly. Speakers are excellent (remember, it's a laptop). Trackpad, fabulous. (Nobody makes a trackpad like Apple.) Keyboard touch, excellent. The rMBP has a dictation utility which is really cool. Yes, it works well. You don't have to train it to your voice. I have used Dragon Naturally Speaking for years. Dragon is the "gold standard" for voice recognition and dictation. Apple's dictation utility is about as accurate as Dragon, in my experience. It's not as stable as Dragon (meaning, it loses its connection rather easily), but that's not a big deal; you simply tap the "fn" key twice and continue talking. No need for an attached microphone; the onboard mic works as well as a plug-in mic (I tried it).

Think of it this way. Pretend there was no MBA. Pretend Apple introduced the 13.3" MBA and the 13.3" rMBP simultaneously -on the same day. You are standing in front of a new 13.3" MBA and 13.3" rMBP, and you are going to buy one or the other. There is no question but that you should buy the 13.3" rMBP. Yes, it's about $500 more than the MBA. Yes, it's vastly superior.

I write this review for democratic purposes. I consider Amazon's review feature to be the finest expression of "commercial" democracy in existence. By this I mean, I am one of the millions of people who benefit enormously from Amazon customer reviews. Whenever I buy on Amazon (which is a lot), I study all the reviews. Hence, I consider it my duty to write my own -to benefit someone else.

The new Retina MacBook Pro is outright gorgeous in terms of its form factor and screen resolution. There are several improvements in this version compared to the 2011 MBPRO 13" that I owned previously:

SIZE Feels significantly lighter and thinner. Somewhere between the MBAir and old MBPRO. It's almost a full pound lighter than the 4.5lb older MBP. A much more portable feel to it compared to the old MBP.

RESOLUTION No question, the resolution is what this device is all about. Refreshing new look as the screen is incredibly crisp (and that's an understatement) with it ridiculously high pixels and also more on-screen real estate to work with. The screen is less reflective compared to its predecessor, making it easier to work in bright conditions.

PORTS Great improvements in my opinion addition of an HDMI port and moving the second USB port to the other side, giving a USB port on both sides. Makes using them slightly easier. Firewire port replaced with an extra Thunderbolt port. Ethernet port and optical drive eliminated.

MAGSAFE 2 Original MagSafe connector replaced with MagSafe 2 connector. I personally am not aware of any advantages of the new connector in terms of charging/data transfer speed, but this was annoying because I had to buy another $80 MagSafe 2 charging cable for my office I leave one at home and one at work.

SPEED Flash storage makes using this device significantly faster. Boot up time and loading time for apps is super fast. Opening up the screen from standby takes less than a second.

BATTERY not sure of the battery specs but I get about the same use on this as I did with my older MBP. If I am away from a wall outlet, a full charge is god enough to get me by the day with 20-30% battery remaining. This could of course vary depending on personal usage.

STORAGE and RAM The rMBP comes with 128GB of flash storage and is also available with a 256GB configuration at an additional $200 or so. A device with higher capacity storage can be configured but that pushes up the price pretty quick and pretty steep. The processor is a 2.5GHz dual-core i5, the Apple rep told me there was no option to get a quadcore processor for this device. Only upgrade possible was I think a i7. If the storage or processor is a deal breaker for you, consider getting the 15" rMBP which comes with a i7 quadcore processor and 256GB flash storage. Performance wise or based on configuration options available, the 15" fares significantly better than the 13" but it is quite a bit more expensive.

Bottomline the 13" rMBP in my opinion offers a good balance across all MBP and MBA devices it offers fantastic portability (only slightly thicker than MBA) and great performance (falls short of rMBP 15 but better than other models).

At the end of the day, whether or not to buy this device is entirely a personal decision based on several factors. IMHO, if portability is a major factor for you, the MBA might be better suited though I think if you try both devices side by side, the difference is insignificant. If performance is a must-have in terms of computing power and storage, the 15" is definitely the better option with the additional $500 price tag . If you don't care about either and just need a good functioning Mac, the older version MBP would be perfect and it's much cheaper at $1199. That being said, once you see the resolution and form factor of this rMBP, it would be difficult to go back to the old MBP!

Buy Apple MacBook Pro MD212LL/A 13-Inch Laptop with Retina Display (Newest Version) Now

I agonized over this purchase, and even considered a few ultrabook options, but in the end, there just is no substitute. As a photographer, my primary consideration was screen quality. On the Mac side, that pretty much ruled out everything but the 15" rMBP. On the PC side, there are a rapidly growing number of relatively inexpensive Ultrabooks with really nice displays. The Asus Zenbook Prime in fact has a really nice IPS matte screen and was the main PC option I considered. The biggest issue there though (setting aside OS preference) is the 4GB of ram and the fact that it uses the slightly lower performance, low voltage intel processors (just as the Macbook Airs do). The screen also has light bleed issues around the bezel, something which I know would eventually drive me nuts. In contrast, the screen on the rMBP's are about as uniform and perfect for still images as it gets (beyond a wider gamut desktop display).

So, in comparison to the 15" rMBP, the 13" rMBP would seem to not provide quite the value proposition as it's bigger brother as mentioned in other reviews (lack of discrete graphics, dual core vs quad core processor, base configuration with 128GB SSD vs the 256 SSD of the 15" rMBP AND the seemingly dramatic price premium to the 13" MBA with similar performance). Most, if not all of these negatives really boils down to price/ value with where the 13" rMBP sits in the line. At retail, Apple really sticks it to the person wanting the better display on a smaller, lighter Macbook...but knock say ten percent or so off of that price (which is what I paid and seems to be where the price is headed here and few other places) and magically, the 13" rMBP all of a sudden starts making a lot of sense. At that price, the terrific display and better keyboard can be seen as a very reasonable premium over the 8GB ram MBA and significantly cheaper than the base 15" rMBP. Advantages of the 13" rMBP over it's bigger brother? Well, weight and size of course (the 15" rMBP is about a pound heavier with larger dimensions making it not so portable). In fact, the 13" rMBP weighs only about half a pound more than the Air and actually has a smaller footprint. For me, it's really about the perfect size. Performance wise, it's not a desktop replacement for heavy duty use imo (which a high end configured 15" rMBP could be) but for portable use and light editing, it's perfect. Like most heavy user/ professionals, I'm not going to be doing major editing on a laptop anyway as I have a main workstation for that. Also, keep in mind that the 15" rMBP does not even use the discreet graphics unless a program specifically calls for it (that is, without the use of a separate utility) and, when that chip is used, forget about decent battery life (maybe 2 hours?) So, for most tasks, it's not used at all! Another possible future advantage of the 13" over the 15" is the huge space where the existing SSD is located below the trackpad (a different location to that of the 15" rMBP, which can be seen at iFixit). This likely means it's going to be very easy at some point to replace the smallish SSD with a larger capacity, off the shelf SSD with a proper connection adapter (the space below the trackpad allows for a commonly available, 7mm height SSD with regard to fit, though the connection is different). With the 13" rMBP, there is also something about it that goes beyond specs and the sum of it's parts. This laptop just feels right! It feels speedy and responsive in use, the build quality is impeccable, the screen is amazing and the keyboard is about the best typing experience one will have on a laptop. Sure, in a year or so when intels next gen, low power Haswell processors are used, the performance of the 13" rMBP will be at the level of it's bigger brother but even now, this is very close to perfect.

Update...This is probably minor for most folks but after using my shiny new Macbook Pro Retina for a week or so, I noticed that the screen bezel, when closed, did not perfectly match up with the bottom on one side. This creates a slight overhang on one side, the left side in my case. I thought this was really odd given the typical Apple build quality I have come to expect over the past decade or so. After all, the design and build quality represents a LOT of the premium one pays for an Apple product and Apple even advertise and pride themselveson how every single millimeter is perfect in their promotional videos and such. Anyway, just out of curiosity, I looked at the same Macbook Pro 13" Retina display model at various Best Buys and, of course, every single one was PERFECT! No overhang anywhere and perfectly smooth mating all around when the laptop is closed. I guess I somehow got the one unit with such a manufacturing defect.

Read Best Reviews of Apple MacBook Pro MD212LL/A 13-Inch Laptop with Retina Display (Newest Version) Here

Pros

Display: The retina display is absolutely jaw dropping. No magnifying glasses, no tiny icons, just pixel-tastic glory perfect for photos and video.

Fit & Finish: Sturdy aluminum chassis with typical Apple attention to detail. Everything just feels like it fits together perfectly.

Performance: Handles photo and video editing, and light gaming(Diablo 3 with medium settings) without issue.

Portability: The design comes in at about 3.5 pounds and happily spends the day in a backpack, or an evening on the sofa.

Trackpad: Think iPhone quality response and that's exactly what you have. Extremely sensitive and versatile.

Cons

Price: Yes this is not a cheap computer, but when you start to spec out comparable machines you're really only shelling out a few hundred extra. (Please do not comment about how the Vizio Thin-N-Light is way less expensive. That particular computer is not even in the same category.)

Regarding Disk Space: The 128GB version (which is actually around 121GB) comes with roughly 105GB of usable space (~16GB of OS and iLife) out of the box. While some may find this inadequate, it appears to be more than enough for me. I recommend using iTunes Match to save yourself considerable space (my 70GB library has been reduced to 10GB as I only need a small amount of music for when I have no wifi) and be diligent about keeping your machine free of junk.

Versus MBA: Don't get me wrong, the Macbook Air is an excellent computer, probably the best all-around machine when you factor in price. That being said the screen on the retina model is infinitely better. For about $500 more you're getting double the RAM, a slight increase in overall performance, and a massive screen upgrade. Is it worth it? Maybe. Guess it depends on how much expendable income you have, and how much you value the display. I tried them side by side and was left feeling there was no way I could be happy with the Air after having seen the Retina.

Bottom Line: If you're like me and enjoy getting your hands on some cutting edge consumer tech, then this is the machine for you. I'm sure eventually these type of displays will trickle down to budget-friendly laptops, but for the time being this is the only show in town. I recommend checking it out in store so you can get a feel for what an amazingly well rounded device it is.

I've been a computer guy for over 30 years. Starting with Apple II (among others) and the original Mac with floppy disk (oh man!) I have been a DOS/Windows user for the most part. All of our computers, servers, network have been based on the Microsoft platform. The main reason was the flexibility of creating your own applications and systems. But Microsoft software has had its share of problems and they just can't seem to get rid of them. It's gotten to be annoying and the new versions today really don't offer much improvement.

My wife wanted a new computer to use while she works on her Masters. Macs are abundant at the university level both by students and professors. After some online research we went to the Apple store and within an hour and a half we walked out with a MacBook Pro with Retina Display. It is actually a joy to work with!

The MacBook Pro easily connected to our network which made it painless to transfer files. The only issue so far was transferring email. There is an app on the Apple store for $1.99 that works, sort of. It transferred most the Outlook Express folders but the larger ones, like the Sent folder, had to be separated out into smaller folders.

We have the 13.3 inch display and find it to be a perfect size: the laptop itself does not feel too big, the Retina display is superb. The Mac interface has also started to grow on me. While a lot different then Windows it doesn't take long to work around the system. Very intuitive and easy to use.

The touchpad is the best I've ever used. It's like having the features of a tablet. Using different combinations of fingers you can easily scroll around the system like on tablet. (I still like to have a mouse old habits die hard...)

The laptop itself is well built: aluminum case, lightweight, looks great. With the Pro we got 8gb RAM and the 128gb Solid State Drive. While the 128gb drive may seem insufficient, most of our data files reside on the network and you can add 128gb SD card or USB/Tunderbolt drives. The lighted keyboard looks really cool, too!

The Pro connections include: 2 Thunderbolt ports, 2 USB 3 ports, HDMI port, SD card slot, headphone and power. The power adapter can be plugged directly into an outlet or with the included extension cord. It also includes a 720p HD Camera.

The one issue I have is not having a file explorer. I have to know where my files are and find them quick and easy. There are work arounds but a little annoying for me.

We bought ours at the local Apple Store. Using the latest in technology our purchase was made right there on the spot then someone brought it out from the back. The sales rep walked us through setting it up. While we could have easily done this ourselves, it was nice to make sure the unit worked and get a basic run through of the operating system since we are used to the Windows environment.

The MacBook Pro isn't cheap but it's not over priced either. It is well built and deigned with great features. We felt the extra $500 is worth getting the Pro over the Air for the extra RAM, ports and the Retina display.

There was a time when file formats were an issue but we are finding the Mac works very well in our current Windows environment and plan to get more in the future. Windows is getting old, Droid is too basic Mac seems to be the wave of the future!

Gateway NE51B14u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black)

Gateway NE51B14u 15.6-Inch LaptopGot this for my spouse for web surfing as a replacement laptop due to price and specs. We had a pretty bad first week with this laptop due to Windows 8, with some frustrating errors that I had to research online and fix. The major issue was The Blue Screen of Death/random rebooting. Felt like returning it, no questions asked, but was too upset. Anyway, also had some security issues with Internet Explorer (picked up intrusive software "helpers" even with Windows 8 default firewall and defender), so using Firefox now, with MalwareBytes and CC Cleaner. There was a frustrating two weeks of dealing with Windows 8's layout and "hidden" features that were so easy to find in previous versions. Be sure to uninstall the bloatedware and useless "apps".

Runs fine now for watching videos, blogging, picture editing, spreadsheets, Yahoo messenger, and Facebook. No more critical or fatal errors. However, moving files around/renaming files is slower than a standard Windows 7 duo core desktop from 2010.

I don't care for Windows 8 (I didn't care for Windows 7), but most non-techies use it at work and at home so I get forced into it. The main issue for me with Windows 8 is that it pretends it has a layout like a tablet or smart phone, and focuses on social media. So all of the file management and PC settings are out of place and "in the background". Microsoft has made an operating system that has been "dumbed down", but as soon as you perform searches for help online you will see that thousands of people have issues and questions with this operating system.

As far as the actual Gateway laptop, the speakers aren't that powerful, and the keyboard layout is frustrating, especially the fact that you have to hit Function Key (bottom left) and a function number (F2) to rename instead of just F2. Can only be changed in BIOS, which is something a casual user should never have to think about.

The screen is good, as is boot-up time.

Your mileage will vary, of course, but I couldn't recommend this product due to my personal experience. I expect a new laptop to work fine out of the box for a casual user (my spouse) and not require technical help on Day 1.

It`s a good machine, but I dont know when num lock or caps lock are turn on or turn off

I bought this item from Fry's Electronics March 16th 2011. I upgraded the RAM to 8GB. Sometimes it didn't wake up from sleep so you had to restart or yank on the battery until it comes out. I had the first HDD fail a week ago (that's not this computer's fault its the HDD manufacturing company). went back to Fry's they replaced it for free because I had a service plan with them. They re-installed windows and all that stuff. Guess what it runs fast but still doesn't wake up from sleep, I will see what i can do about return, or exchange. I really did like this PC, I dropped a SSD in for a week and it ran super fast but still waking up problems. i have all my drivers, firmware, and bios updated to the most current status. I wish me and this thing could of worked but I am incompatible with HP.

UPDATE:05/14/12

I had it repaired at Fry's in Webster TX, the tech reps were kind except for one who wouldn't give my PC back and they replaced my dead HDD. However when I got it home and booted up next morning it worked fine. It wouldn't wake up from sleep again, I am bringing my review down to Two STARS, its not Amazon's or Fry's fault. ITS HP'S FAULT PLAIN AS DAY! I hate HP with a passion, always will, always have. This PC has good specs though (it just don't run like it should). I will update again, I am ready to get rid of this thing, I will try for the Lemon Law after this, I wish it wasn't like this, maybe I just got bad luck with HP.

UPDATE: 07/06/12

I had taken it to Fry's again and they said that it would take six weeks to get to California and back for repairs.

It only took about four so I was happy. They replaced the motherboard, keyboard, wireless card, hard drive and even apart of the frame along with re-installng Windows 7 Home Premium. I haven't had time to test it out since pickup because I have been in New York and had a family member pick it up, Fry's and HP impressed me this time, but it might be in my future for another disappointing effort.

UPDATE: 7/31/12

It's official this is my last HP machine, just got back from NY and the laptop still has waking from sleep problems. Everthing else is running fine, its not a major problem that it can't wake from sleep sometimes, just a pain. I promise I will never accept an HP laptop, desktop, printer, monitor, or any other device with the HP name on it. I am sticking with my guns, ASUS and Aleinware. I called fry's in Webster texas store number 18 and let them know about the waking problem. The supervisor of all the tech slaves said that its probally just a cabling problem. I told him that he didnt understand the problem, if it is the secong motherboard than its a model problem. Good bye this machine will be for sale very soon, comment if you want this item from me I will gladly sale it to you....
