Love this laptop, lots of cool and handy features, such as sleep & charge and sleep & music and runs all my programs fast and to a high quality.

The screen and sound quality is also amazing, I have yet to need to use the sound output above 50%, just to show how loud the sound can go!

One issue I have had so far is that during a relatively low graphically demanding game I get a black rectangle on the floor and I have yet to find a solution to correct this issue. If it wasn't for that problem (And the fact Windows is still not to the same level as Windows 7 in my opinion) I would probably have given the laptop a five star rating.

This was my 5th Toshiba Laptop between me and my family but will definitely be my last. Bought it customized from Toshiba Direct. It worked for about a month, and failed. They directed me to take it personally to their authorized service center for fastest service. It sat for a month waiting for a part that didn't fix it and now they are waiting for a new hard drive that they estimate will take 6 WEEKS to deliver. When I called support they told me that it would be faster if I go pick it up and mail it back to them (with no commitment on what "faster" means). They offer no explanation of why it would take 6 weeks for a new hard-drive. Also the warranty continues to expire while the unit sits in their hands. (It is warranted from purchase date only)

I asked for my money back. After 2 weeks they come back with an offer of store credit to Toshiba Direct because they don't give refunds. They only want to credit the purchase price so I would need to eat about $200 in sales tax and shipping on the original and another $200 when I use my credit. They explained to me that this was a great favor as they were not depreciated the value of the computer for the one month that I was apparently honored to have it work for me.

So the only choice I get from Toshiba are take a credit and get another Toshiba craptop eating the shipping and tax charges 2 twice or wait until they fix the one I have with no guarantee of how long it will take while my warranty ticks away.

Here are some other fun facts they won't give me anything in writing about my options won't send me an email. You also can't send them emails. Strikes me a little odd a computer company won't take an email. Nothing in writing appears to be their policy.

I am a super-geek. I want a laptop with a big screen, big memory capacity and the ability to have 2 hard drives. The memory capacity of this laptop is 32GB which is really nice! Also, you can have 2 hard drives in this baby! I think the memory on the video is 2GB? I'm sold. The only question left is how easy it it to install Windows 7/8 and have the drivers ready to go without hassle. Also It is very important how easy it is to upgrade the hardware on this model (increase memory, change hard drives). I'm still researching but if the answer to the questions I have are "Yes, the drivers are easy to install and Yes, the hardware is easy to upgrade them i'm going to get 2 of these....*Update: (1 hour later) I downloaded the User Guide for this model to find out more about the 2nd Hard drive installation and it was no help AT ALL. I called Toshiba and the guy on the phone told me that I would have to take the Laptop to a dealer/repair shop to install the 2nd hard drive. I told him that I am a tech and that it should not be that hard to add a 2nd drive. Also, my decision to purchase this laptop is based on how easy it is to upgrade... I shouldn't have to read a manual or search the internet to find out that I need to make my own discs from the laptop; and "restore" discs at that! Shame on any company that won't spend $1 or $2 to make sure their PC/laptop is shipped with all the discs. # 2 the power connection to this laptop is not sturdy there should be a latch or something I am a tech and I have worked on some Toshiba laptops and I was not impressed by how flimsy the power cable connects to the units I will send a note to toshiba about this this laptop is NOT Far from perfection. #3 There is NO HARD DRIVE LED on the unit.. can you believe this ?! I wonder who made that decision? I'd like to start off this review by saying that I previously have only owned Dell laptops of off the shelf quality (no gaming specs). This is the first gaming laptop I have purchased, and so far it has met or exceeded my expectations, for a laptop. Games run well on it, even at full configs, and the graphics are nice, overall just a good experience. My only two minor issues with it are Windows 8 and that it runs hot when you play a demanding game. Windows 8, definitely seems designed for touch pads and I do not know why they didn't redesign a version for a "normal" pc (non-touch). But that's not the product's fault, that's on MS. The issue with running hot is really not a big deal, it is just because of the fan's exhaust being pointed out to where your right hand would be holding a mouse, it can get warm. I was able to mitigate this greatly by purchasing one of those laptop fan desk things.

So my recommendations for this are experiement with Windows 8, or reformat to an older OS and purchase an external fan for the laptop. All in all, I would recommend this laptop to someone on a lower budget that maybe cannot afford a high end model.

I've had two or three HP laptops in the past which I loved but they ran very hot. So far this Toshiba runs cool and fast. The only things I don't really care for are the textured aluminum case.... it seems to collect dust and crumbs, etc, more easily than a smooth aluminum case .... and its weight. It seems heavier than my last HP which was the same size. This is not a convenient laptop for traveling, although I do take it with me, but it is heavy and bulky to carry around. It is a great laptop replacement! The other problems I'm having are Windows 8 related. Windows 8 is really designed for touch-pad computers...I wish I had known that . I may have looked into getting a touch-pad laptop instead.

HP Mini-Note PC Intel 1.6GHz 10.1

Most current netbooks have a lot of similarities--with the same processor (Atom N270), similar size hard drives (most new with 160 GB) and similar LCD panel resolutions. The HP Mini-Note 2140 is no exception to most of these base tech specs except for the LCD panel resolution of 1024x576 (instead of 1024x600 like most others in the 10" range).

So why is this 2140 my current marginal favorite in comparison, after trying out friends' and those available in stores?

Unlike most manufacturers, HP really got the keyboard right. The shift keys and enter key are large and where you expect them to be. Unlike other manufacturers, things are in place for productive touch typing and the 92%-size of standard laptop keyboard is pretty easy to adjust to.

The exterior casing is made of solid-feeling aluminum instead of plastic. The netbook feels more durable and looks beautiful in comparison to most netbooks which can look a bit cheap in my opinion. The aluminum adds a few ounces to the weight, but mine is still under 3 pounds with the 6 cell battery.

The netbook has a good selection of ports and connectors on the outside. It comes with an ExpressCard/54 slot which no other netbook currently does as far as I'm aware. Most of the other connectors are similar to other netbooks. It also has 2 USB ports, an analog (vga) monitor out jack (see below for my complaints about it), an SD card slot and separate mic and audio out jacks.

You would think I would be raving about this netbook, but I ran into some problems with my computer that make it less usable.

I am unable to get any resolution above 1024x768 on any of the three external monitors I've tried it on. Two of the monitors are 1280x1024 resolution and one is 1440x900. This is even with ONLY the external monitor enabled. At the same time, my 4 year old notebook and my desktop detect and make correct resolutions available for the 1280x1024 monitors (my other monitor is a slightly odd resolution). Updating drivers seems to make no difference (the one from HPs site or the Intel drivers). The monitor will not detect correctly and free software (Monitor Asset Manager) that bypasses the windows registry to query the plug'n'play monitor properties directly cannot detect the external monitors correctly on this piece of hardware (works fine on both my other computers).

It seems other people are not having the same kinds of problems that I am encountering, so I was either the lucky recipient of a computer with some highly ingrained software or hardware problems, or it has difficulty playing nice with some monitors that have pretty standard resolutions.

Unfortunately, HP support is somewhere between awful and abysmal and has not chosen to make any reply to my support request email aside from an automatic confirmation they received it (and it has been over two weeks).

A more minor quibble is that the built-in LCD panel resolution is only 1024x576 instead of 1024x600 like most other netbooks. Though it's only a 24-line difference, on this small of a screen every pixel counts more than on a larger monitor. At least the resolution is properly advertised so you know what you're getting.

The touchpad also has it's buttons on the side, which some people dislike but didn't bother me.

It's overall a good netbook. If HP would fix my external monitor issues, I'd probably think it was the best one currently available. As it stands, it's a good, but mine is flawed and my experience with HP's support has been very poor so far.

I've had my new HP 2140 for about a week now and so far so good. Setup was like any new laptop. Fast and easy. I especially like the XP operating system over Vista. First thing I noticed was the solid construction of this Netbook. It doesn't feel cheap and made of plastic. The keyboard also had a well constructed feel that had just enough room without feeling cramped.

Now the software package was limited but did offer a 30 day trial version of the MS Office 2007. I had no issues connecting to my draft N wireless network and printer setup completed in less than a minute. I do recommend the larger 6 cell battery which is rated for about 8 hours. Depending on how you use it you may get less than 6 hours like me.

In conclusion I really like this unit. I did my research prior to purchasing. According to Cnet reviews, this was the unit to beat and I have to say they are right. The screen size is nice and the 160 gb is plenty of storage for me. My unit came with a free Netbook sleeve to carry it in and yes you can still use the sleeve with the 6 cell battery attached. I may add another gb of ram for a faster multi tasking experience. The web cam seemed to work well with Skype. Picture quality was ok. As mentioned by other users the mouse button location had a slight learning curve but wasn't bad.

Note: I have yet to test the vga out connection and its resolution as I heard someone mention was a negative. Will update later.

Bought one of the first 2140s that shipped in February 2009. Have already taken it on a 1 month trip to China. This is my 1st netbook, and 5th notebook that I have owned since 2002.

The portability and convenience of the 10" form factor is great. The screen is bright, and when compared to other netbooks the HP Mini 2140's metal exterior makes it a stand out. I had a chance to sample and feel many other netbooks while in Hong Kong and while some of them may have a few things in their favor, I realized the HP 2140 was the best choice for me.

No problems connecting to any wireless / wired networks in hostels / hotels / coffee shops. The split trackpad button layout has not been a problem to adjust to. Both buttons have a nice rubbery feel/response. The quick battery recharge to 90% has been good. 6-cell battery provides a good tilt, now I don't need to bring a CoolPad to angle the keyboard!! The 1024x576 is a minor quibble. I can't imagine reading the text on the high-resolution 1366x768 display. Contrrary to some opinions, I prefer the coating/glass/whatever that is on the screen easy to clean, and I don't worry about touching it.

I have not tried an external monitor or printing with this netbook, so I am unable to comment on those aspects.

Soon I will test the ExpressCard 54 slot with a Creative Labs audio card that I am using on another notebook. UPDATE X-Fi Audio Xtreme card has been tested and works!

Performance wise only issues are a little lag if running too much video and a couple of blue screens when too many Google Chrome tabs were open along with other programs. Memory overload of some sort. But easy to avoid, once one knows the limitations of the processor. Used the netbook to talk with a handheld SkyPE Ipevo phone in many places. Handy!

One annoyance (That I was aware of before buying) is that to use the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys one must use the FN key at the same time. Which is swappable with the LEFT corner CTRL key (Not the RIGHT CTRL key, which would make it a one handed motion unless I missed a setting) in the BIOs but still annoying as the smaller screen requires more scrolling. The trackpad scroll works well though. Other netbooks have dedicated PAGE-UP/DOWN keys.

I also own an HP DV6000 series limited edition white notebook which is slick but - after experiencing the aluminum/metal feel of the the HP Mini I will say that more note/netbooks should be built with metal over plastic. Enjoy!

All in all, this is a great little device. Powerful, compact, well thought out. BUT--and this is a BIG but....could not get the HP Mini 2140 to print to an fairly new HP Photosmart C6180 printer. Even after spending literally days on the phone with HP's engineers in Bangalore, this is a nonstarter, and I ultimately returned the device. There's just no excuse for this, particularly since the printer accepts jobs on our home network from our Macbook Pros and from our Thinkpads, but NOT from this nice, new handy, dandy HP Mini.

I wanted a 2140 high-rez for a long time and finally bought one just before it was discontinued by HP. I was soooo excited to get it as it is a sexy and slick looking little machine. I wanted to like this machine so bad, but the 2140 has serious connection issues, in terms of WI-FI, and does not connect to many different signals and routers. You can't just take it to a coffee shop, because there is at least a 50% chance it won't work with their router. It is a useless machine, as it has terrible WI-FI. Just do a search on Google that reads "2140 wireless problems", and you will find large forum discussions of 2140 owners that have this same problem, or inability to connect wirelessly to the internet, and there is NO FIX available. The machine is fundamentally flawed and I believe it was discontinued because of this flaw. HP took the machine back, and I still believe they are a good company, but this machine is a dud.

I bought this laptop on sale at Amazon.com. I've had it for around a month. It was a bit bigger than I thought it would be, but its relatively light for its size. So far I have no complaints other than the battery life which I knew about coming in. I'm currently in the process of trying to find an extended battery. My only other complaint is that the screen was not quite as sharp as I expected it to be based on the pics on the website and I have tried to change all the settings and increase the brightness etc.

All in all though, for around the price of a netbook I have a good desktop replacement.

It's my first laptop and I love it. Just the mobility and I like the OS. I'm not a movie maker or music mixer. I basically play online games, send e-mails and surf the web. I'm glad I switched to a laptop.

For years I held off on buying a laptop. Mainly because I had bought a netbook back in 2009 and it had sufficed for my mobile computing needs.

In November 2011 this unit was at Bestbuy's BF sale and I bought one.

Construction:

The unit feels quite solid. I found no problems with its construction.

Display: The 15.6" screen size is more than adequate for most all of my computing uses:

browsing

working with office docs, spreadsheets and such.

video viewing (such as youtube or DVDs) is great. No display problems, no choppiness in playback.

External screen outputs: Either one works fine, to drive a larger, external monitor.

VGA port (aka HD15 port)

HDMI port

Built-in card reader:

I have tested some 16GB SDHC cards which had "Live versions" of linux loaded on them.

The card reader worked fine both an SD card reader and as a secondary boot device for the "Live" linux OS loaded onto the SDHC cards.

Battery life:

This laptops battery life is quite good. I have not ran the battery down completely but with my choice to

keep the screen "brighter" than normal while it's on battery, I'm still getting an estimated 4 hours+ of battery life.

this factor has moved me away from using my old netbook as often as I had in the past, since my netbook's 3-cell battery's life was short compared to this Gateway laptop.

Wireless:

reception and connection speed is good for this device. It does it's MS updates, it's AV updates and all downloads via wireless with no problems.

CPU: This CPU and this unit's overall speed is better than I had expected.

I use i5 and i7 laptops at work and have not found this gateway i3 to be much slower than the faster

i-series CPU laptops I use at work.

I purchased this computer on Cyber Monday of this year (2012) at a rock bottom price of $309.00 If that isn't unbelievable enough, let me tell you what an awesome package this is! It works unbelievably well and has all the bells and whistles as it came with Windows 7 which I love. The laptop is lightweight, the battery lasts just long enough, and it has plenty of space; even for a homeschooling parent. I think this MUST be the best computer on the market for the most reasonable price! We watch our expenditures in my house and this product is worth much more than I paid for it. Good quality!

I got this laptop as a Christmas/graduation present from my parents. Overall, I'm so pleased. The battery life is amazing, the display is awesome, and the fact that it already came with Windows 7 was really convenient. And it's so lightweight! As a web design major, I carry this thing around everywhere. My previous Dell brickbook nearly dislocated my shoulders. I'd recommend maybe getting a different color if you're worried about fingerprints, though, as they're quite noticeable. The only negative thing I have is the touch pad gestures. I thought that the "pinch" zoom in/zoom out features would be really handy but while browsing the web it would often zoom in and out on me without me doing much. But I just disabled that feature and it's great otherwise. :) It's a great buy, I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have owned Dells for the past 10 years and have never had one issue with any of their machines. This laptop is no exception. I would recommend the laptop for the average user who isn't a big gamer and isn't working on memory-intensive High Def video editing.

I have had a Dell desktop for a long time and have always been happy with their products and service. I had a tough time deciding if I was going to get this particular laptop as there were a few very negative reviews regarding their service. I decided to give it a go despite the negative reviews and although I have only had this laptop a day, I am extremely happy with it. The screen is bright and clear, the keyboard is easy to use and not cramped and difficult to navigate, the laptop weight is the most surprising thing to me. I thought it would be much heavier! All in all, I am very pleased with the entire experience. Especially how quickly Amazon got it to me. I bought this laptop after 3 months of very extensive research. For the price and the specs it seemed like the best possible choice. Boy oh boy was I wrong. After only 3 months I started to have problems with the charger. The laptop would only work if plugged in, it wouldn't charge and if the charger was even bumped, the computer would shutdown due to lack of power. So, called Dell and after a lengthy discussion to many other problems I'd been having as well, turns out the motherboard needed to be replaced, the whole charging housing, the hard-drive and the wireless card. I will say, I had great customer service and my laptop was returned quickly, but I did have to send it in. But, when I got the laptop back, they must've put in a different charger housing because my original plugin barely fits the hole, which was octogon before and is now round.

It has now been 1 year that I've had it and the screen is going out. There's something wrong with the hinge and it makes the screen do very funny things and I have to jiggle it until the screen is clear. So, this is the worst laptop ever made. It's just kind of cheap as well. The plastic on it is awful.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6698 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)

I love this laptop. Slim, yet still has a DVD drive (not so common these days). The touch screen makes clunky Windows 8 so much easier to deal with. The touch pad is very responsive, easy to right and left click. Despite being thin it feels sturdy and doesn't flex when you put pressure on it. It can do some serious yoga, the screen tilting back almost 180 degrees. Backlit keys are fancyand for a $500 laptop, it looks really classy. Everyone who sees it goes, "Oooooh".

My love for this laptop doesn't blind me to its faults, howeverit's a budget laptop with a touchscreen, and that's that. I haven't tried to run anything big on it yet, but its speed is not anything spectacular. Should be fine for average web surfing/word processing use but it's nothing flashy. I also don't like the way the keys depress. They feel a bit mushy. I find the speakers a little tinny, though you can get fair volume out of them. They're weirdly located on the bottom of the laptop. The three USB ports are all right next to each other on the front left side.

Still, I would definitely buy this again.

I really not a high tech guy but this laptop is great for me. I love the touch screen. Everyone should try this laptop!

This is a very nice laptop. The touchscreen works great and all of the extra features it has like a back lite keyboard is defiantly worth the money. My only complaint is that the battery life isn't the greatest, only about 4 hours when it is being used. Overall, a very nice laptop.

This is a good 17" laptop but if you plan on doing skype or other video conference you better get a USB webcam (with mic) or an entirely different laptop.

Usually most laptops have similar specs and will perform pretty much on par with the others. What you look for in a review is things other than performance... things that might prevent you from buying the item or make it more appealing to another.

Pros

-Screen is bright and brilliant

-Touchpad has some handy multi-touch features

-Not too heavy for a 17"

Cons

-Webcam: It does fine in good light but absolutely terribly in low light. Having a bedside lamp on does not seem to be enough for this thing. This is in comparison to a built in webcam on a laptop that was 3 years older. But again, in good light it looks just fine.

-Microphone: This is by far the worst part of this laptop. I purchased this laptop for my significant other with the idea that we would be skyping while she is out of town (which is quite often). The microphone does a poor job at picking up any sound over a few feet away and picks up EVERY noise that is going on in the laptop. When the fan kicks on for the CPU it's a deafening roar until it turns off. There are little clicks and squeaks that I'm really not sure where they are coming from. I would say hard drive noise but it now has an SSD. It's disturbing that a company like Samsung cannot seem to get this part right. Their phones and tablets have great cameras and microphones... why not the laptops?

In saying all of that it's possible that I've bought a laptop that just has a poorly mounted mic or something but I don't think that's the case.

It gets three stars because the video conferencing ability was a primary feature for us when buying this laptop. If you never use skype or the mic... then it would be great.

I have purchased this laptop a little over a month now and it is definitely a great buy. The only issue I have with it is I have to wipe off my finger prints regularly because of the quality of its exterior but that is a minor matter. When I first bought this laptop, I thought I would not have been able to do video editing on it because of the limited video graphics but I have been using a video editing program by Magix and it works flawlessly. However, I have been having some trouble with vista recognizing drivers for an audio interface that I have been trying to use with this laptop . For the price of this laptop, this is real deal. Amazon.com had my purchase shipped to Trinidad in a less than a week with no problems. Great service.

This is the biggest piece of junk I ever bought & I'm stuck with it. There is NO customer service No help of any kind & the paper the warrenty is wriiten on will serve me better in the area of my toilet. I honestly never sen any computer do this b 4; but whenever it fells like it it spins the screen like ur looking at a slot machine in action and when it stops nobody knows. How aggrivating this can b at criticle times. Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 Laptop - AMD Turion II dual-core M500 / 16.0" HD LCD / 4GB DDR2 / 32

I purchased this laptop recently for school purposes. So far it's running beautifully, and I haven't had any problems with it. Windows 7 is good, much better than Vista at launch. The only big issue I have with it is the sound: it's not that good, but I've heard that other L505 laptops have the same issue, and the problem is usually fixed with drivers. The problem here is that I think BestBuy started selling this piece early, so it's not supported yet on Toshiba's website.

I found it at BestBuy for $550 before tax, which is considerably lower than other places. Try to find it for that price if you can. If you cannot, then wait until it's supported on the Toshiba website.

I helped in buying this laptop for my mother as a replacement for an old 2001 computer she was struggling with.

After setting it up for her I spent a day experimenting. Here is my assessment of the Satellite L505D-GS6000:

Pros:

it runs smoothly on Win-7 with a minimum of the balky behavior experienced with XP

video and video card are excellent

the webcam is much better than expected

battery life is well-inline with specs

comes with Microsoft works, which is perfect for those not wishing to spend a lot of money

on software they won't use, such as the Office Suite

Cons:

speaker, though turned up to maximum did not allow hearing of media player

64-bit software limitations are still severely limiting

cooler will be needed, unless you like replacing the hard drive every 12-24 months

The sound quality can easily be improved with cheap speakers provided by Microsoft and Logitech, two reliable providers. The cost would be in the $30-40 range.

When I used Vista 64-bit in July 2009, I found it impossible to find replacements for expensive upgrades provided by Norton (antivirus), Webroot (Spysweeper) and others. Many technical software providers, such as AutoDesk require complete upgrades such as over $800 for AutoCAD Lt 2010. To my surprise, Win-7, which was a vast improvement over clunky Vista, would not allow me to run AutoCAD Lt 2007. I purchased AutoCAD Lt 2007 for about $1000.

Here's how I met the challenge. First, I went back to Win-7 32-bit, although this will cost me RAM; you need 4G minimum for Win-7 anyway (not 2G they said in 2006 this happened before with MS XP!). I run a gamer machine with 8G, so I can tolerate using it all to run 32-bit Win-7.

With 64-bit Win-7, it's different. You will find that the new and improved Internet Explorer has a pretty good firewall according to PC magazine. However, I recommend using the Norton Internet Security package that comes with the Toshiba L505D-GS6000. It runs much smoother than the original Norton software of 2009. Next, you should add CCleaner, which is an excellent tool for removing cookies and such for free; go to CNET or another reliable free software site with less chance of picking up spyware.

Unfortunately, you will find than many 32-bit softwares won't run such as Avast! Free Antivirus. You will get warning that the software did not load or than no warning at all. Look for the software on your computer faceplate. If it isn't there, it probably didn't load. You can check using Control Panel too.

I'm advising everyone owning a laptop to buy a cooler. I've owned laptops for years and the new duo-cores run very hot; hot enough to eventually destroy the hard drive, CD player and even the CPU. You will want a fan-driven cooler because the so-called passive coolers don't do the job. I've tried both and you can expect to see a 20 F improvement with a fan unit compared to half of that with a passive unit. Believe me, it's cheap insurance. A cooler will cost about $30-50 and a new hard drive will cost about $200, so you do the math. I prefer a Targus twin-fan unit.

My only complaint is that the laptop makers haven't caught up. The fan for most laptops draw air in the bottom through a tiny 1-2 inch grated spot in the lower upper left corner of the laptop and expell at the side. Wouldn't it be nice if the cooler fan were located near the inlet? A push-pull system would improve cooling. When it gets really hot, i.e., in the 90's, I use a wash cloth and ice pack to cool my computer for web-brousing. The wash cloth goes under the ice pack to catch humidity collecting on the ice pack. This works well.

I purchased the gs6000 last weekend. The salesperson recommended the Toshiba gs6000 with the AMD processor over the computer I was going to purchase with the Intel processor. That left me confused since I had not heard of the AMD processor. I went home and did some research on AMD processors. The AMD won hands down in almost all reviews I read, excelling in graphics. So far, I love the Toshiba. It's very quiet. The touch pad was scrolling at times, which I thought was not working correctly until my step daughter got on it and informed me the right side of the touch pad was made to scroll! I have always owned a Dell. One thing I really like about the Toshiba is that the fan vent is on the side, keeping the bottom much cooler than my old Dell where the fan was on the bottom. The only complaint I would have is the keys are not concave, which I am used to. Just a preference. I mainly use it for photography. So far, it's great!

I bought this at bestbuy and it was a great price..you have 14 days to try a laptop there and I tried couple of dells then for the first time said heck with it and went with toshiba with amd..I have always had Pentium..but, I have this amd one and its great..the speakers arent bad in this at all..matter of fact its louder than some and even louder than the asus brand i tried. I even had to turn it down! go figure..this machine is awesome..and the design is sexy! the key board is great and I even like the numbers on the right side..I never had a laptop with that on the side..I actually use it more than I thought..I am happy with my final choice..I think that toshiba has won me over for a couple of years..anyway..I will more than likely got another one from toshiba..!!

This laptop works like a dream! This is my 2nd Toshiba laptop and though I had my heart set on a Satellite Pro (just because, LOL), this, to me, was a much better value for money ($530.00 before tax, from BestBuy). It has worked beautifully from day one and has never given me cause for regret.

My first laptop (Toshiba Satellite also) came with Vista and gave me no end of headaches, to the point where I had to change to WinXP and upgrade the memory. (After this, it worked great.) Because of this, I was a little wary of Win7 but I shouldn't have been no problems there at all. It recognizes everything I stick in it (except for my HP printer, but it was easy to get the drivers online) and I've had no thought of upgrading the memory it came with, something I've had to do with every other computer I've owned.

I must also mention how much I like the keyboard beautiful, wide keys and a number keypad (!!!), which my previous laptop did not have and which was a constant source of grumbling to me.

My one and only complaint about this product would be the speakers quite frankly, they're terrible! But no biggie for me, I simply use external speakers.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 6272-4GU 15.6-Inch Laptop

I ordered this laptop (Edge E530 62724GU) from Amazon, specifically with Windows 7. I think Windows 8 is usable, but better suited to machines with touchscreen hardware. When I got the package, I thought that the computer was not new. I was wrong it was new; it had been opened to remove the original Windows 8 Pro and install Windows 7 Professional.

I bought this computer for my wife. After spending some time removing unneeded software and adding needed software, I had become familiar with it. The sound and camera are adequate for her needs, and the laptop itself seems sturdy. The software installed was more useful than some of the crapware on other new laptops.

My wife likes the feel of the machine, and the weight is acceptable; for lighter weight, you will pay more.

The display has 1 dead pixel, but she has not noticed it. If it had 3, I would have sent it back. It's annoying, but not a serious problem.

If this laptop lasts as well, and as long, as it feels like it will, it will have been money well spent.

I purchased this a few months back with the help of my son who is a computer science whiz ( what kid isn't nowadays, except mine wins awards all over the country because he's so smart!) Anyway, I know nothing about computers, all I can share with you is that it came very well packaged, 2 days after I put my order in. when my son set it up and did whatever it is you do to make them run, he had no problems. It seemed fairly easy and I was using it just a few hours after he started. The keyboard is very comfortable for me. I am not a big person, I wear small gloves so have small hands , they fit nicely when I am typing. The screen is a perfect size with nice color to the screen. I like the extra numbers bar on the right. It's light weight and thin so not inconvenient to carry. I've had no glitches or problems with this computer since purchase. Have been really happy.

This is a solid 4GB Core I5 machine with a fast hard drive (7200rpm) and it comes with Windows 7 installed and with a Windows 8 upgrade. With sufficient memory, the fast drive makes more difference in the computer's performance than a fast processor. The multitouch touchpad takes some getting used to. Because the computer has both a trackpoint and a touchpad, the 3 mouse buttons are above the touchpad. The primary user of this machine has been using XP at home and Windows 7 at work and does not like change. Windows 8 would be a very traumatic change. With Windows 7, this machine was the perfect upgrade, minimizing the change from the previous machine. I did delete some of the bloatware that ships with the machine. I also had to go to the Lenovo downloads for this machine to download and install the trackpad software so that I could shut off some of the functions that were causing confusion.

So I bought this laptop to replace my g/f's old Dell XPS 1340 that started overheating. And I have to admit. I am disappointed by this unit. Let's start with the build quality. Now the machine itself had no scuff marks and the plastic matte finish was alright, something to keep it simple, but I have to admit, the way that thing attracts grease is scary. I only used it yesterday and the trackpad and wrist-rest look so greasy. Everytime I used it, I had to keep wiping the surface. (I was trying to remove the bloatware for my girl, we'll get to the software in a bit). But my major concern with the build quality was the laptop dvd drive. Now MAYBE it was just a q/c problem with the one I got, but I simply HATE the fact that the drive is sticking out and doesn't close flush with the surface of the laptop.

Now for the software issues. Let's start with some positives. I came with Windows 7 Pro which I love wholesomely, but sadly, the machine didn't come with any serial key for it. So god forbid there is a software issue and I have to reformat? I am DEFINITELY NOT using that Windows 8 cd they gave me. Going to use that as a coaster! So that also kind of pissed me off. I have to see if there is some sort of third party software I can find online to extra the serial key from the machine so I can store it for future use.

Moving onto the bloatware. It comes with a bit of 3rd party software along with some lenovo bloatware. They were fairly easy to get rid off, just had to put up with the machine rebooting for every single bloatware I wanted to get rid off.

But the final thing that pissed me off, and dropped this review to 3 stars (I wish I could have given it a 4) was a very interesting problem. I have been using computers for some time and I know my way around the machine. But what I found VERY strange last night when I was running through the updates was a weird "failing to configure" error. So because it's a factory bought machine the updates were behind and I understood that. Usually I run the update programme, it finds 71 new updates so I just set it to run the updates automatically. Easy? NO! EVERY SINGLE TIME I RAN THE UDPATES, I kept getting a failure to configure error, So I ended up having to SELECT each pair of updates from oldest to newest, one by one and let the computer install the updates one by one. Needless to say that took 2 HOURS to finish. But it finished none the less.

I finally cleaned up the machine and got it running the way how I wanted it so I am contented for now. It's really for my g/f but she is not tech-savy so I am hoping there are no future problems. Lenovo has usually been renownd for built quality and software quality, that's why this particular machine confounded me. Did I just happen to get the one bad egg?

As for other things, the screen shows fairly clear for what an Intel HD4000 supposed to do. In the future, I shall upgrade the RAM for her so it runs more comfortably. They audio is fine, the Dolby Software does help to boost audio quality, however I did notice it glitch when I was trying to set up SKPYE. Don't know when Microsoft is going to sort out that problem.

I know the review was long, but I wanted to be meticulous for future customers who wish to purchase this item. There were not much others with clear reviews. So to my fellow amazonians online. I hope this helps!

Sony VAIO VPCEG34FX/B 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

I was skeptical at first, so I bought a Samsung i7 laptop instead. The Samsung, like most of the other laptops looked plain and outdated. The deal killer was the fact that its i7 was mystifyingly slow, so i took it back and gave the Sony a try! I was immediately impressed by the Vaio i5's speed, it is clocked at 2.5GHZ with speed boost up to 3.1GHZ so it just zipped to my tasks. The screen is bright and clear as you would expect from Sony. The battery is very good and i can go all day at school without a recharge. The diamond texture repels fingerprints, so it always looks clean. it has the Vaio Gate that livens up the windows 7 desktop. I also own a Sony Playstation 3 and this laptop features remote play so i can play PS3 games or access my PS3 from anywhere. The WIFI is fine if you update the drivers from Intel. My only complaint is the video camera isn't the best. I have looked hard after buying this computer and I cant find anything at this price that can meet all of my needs with the speed and style of this Vaio.

After my Macbook Pro gave out, I really wanted another computer with great color and visual as well as the easy feel of the Mac. The Vaio was very sleek and light weight. It had an interesting diamond finish that didn't show fingerprints too much but still looked good. The keyboard was comfortable and soft to the touch it could really use a back light at night though, very hard to see. Start-up was very easy, the computer booted extremely quickly. There wasn't too much bloatware but it was easily removed in just a few minutes.

Unfortunately, the Vaio has one major drawback. The wifi is very erratic. It would find our network and then for no reason drop the network. Many times I would have to go into the network settings and cancel and resubmit the connection. Sometimes this would work, sometimes, I would wait 3-4 minutes for it to reconnect. I downloaded and installed over 28 updates from Microsoft for Windows 7, none made any substantial difference. My husband upgraded our router at the house, no difference. I contacted Sony who told me to contact Intel and I went round and round. Nothing made any difference in the performance of this computer's wireless abilities. We have many other devices at our home on the wireless, including 2 Macs, a Dell laptop, Kindle, iPods, and iPad. The only one that has ever had any issue with the wireless was the Sony Vaio. In searching the net, I found many references to this problem, many dating back up to two years ago. Until, Sony can solve this issue, I would suggest avoiding this particular model.

I purchased the Sony Vaio in late January, so I've had it for about 3 months, and I absolutely love it! I initially had an issue with the wireless connection and had to call Sony customer support, but after a couple hours on the phone with the technicians, they finally figured out that it was a startup application causing a conflict with my wireless. Needless to say, they resolved the issue the day after I received the computer, and since then the wireless has worked flawlessly.

I just finished an online Master's program, and this computer was a dramatic upgrade from my last computer and made taking classes online much easier! It is an excellent computer for watching movies, doing school work, using the Internet, etc. It's super fast and I haven't had any issues.

The look of the computer is also very classy. It's super portable and the battery life is amazing (lasting several hours before needing to be plugged in). The screen is a beautiful display. I would highly recommend this product to a friend.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830TG-6808 14-inch Laptop (Cobalt Blue)

This is a great laptop, with lighting fast speed while doing pretty much anything, cool little gadgets like a 3.0 usb port, wi-di, and power off charging which I utilize a lot, very convenience little thing in my opinion. I did my research before finally deciding on this laptop, took me 3 months to finally decide on this particular Acer Timelinex. I enjoy the 14'' LED HD display, 15.4'' is just too big now a days. Movies and videos look great, the speakers are top notch as I am a little sound freak and it sounds great. It can run games like Dead Space 2 on the highest settings with no lag, I upgraded the ram to 8 GB. I'm just gonna keep it simple and sweet, this Acer is lighting fast in pretty all aspects you can find in a computer, the cobalt blue looks and feels great, and it easily transportable and light weight as it weighs less than 4 or 5 pounds. Pretty much it all just boils down to this, you CANNOT find a laptop, especially a 14'' laptop with specs like this one for such a great price. And oh yeah, it has a 9-10 hour battery life.

This is the successor to the old model, AS4830TG-6450, which is what I actually have, but the only changes made were a tiny bit faster CPU and smaller hard drive (probably due to Japan Tsunami). Not many laptops that are 1" thin with a 14" form factor and cost ~$700 have a Sandy Bridge CPU, dedicated Geforce GT 540M 1GB graphics card, optical drive and real 8-10 hour battery life (NOTE: Battery is non-removable). You also get one USB 3.0 port, an SD card reader, an HDMI and a VGA port.

SPEAKERS:

Although I don't like that the speakers are on the bottom, they are okay. They have greater clarity and spaciousness than the MacBook Pro 13, but the Mac had slightly better bass and had a much fuller sound. The Dolby control panel has a lot of adjustments and enhancements.

SCREEN:

The 1366x768 screen is higher in resolution, but a step down from the Mac, as it's not quite as sharp and viewing angles not as forgiving, but it is still LED backlit. Sometimes it's like looking at a film negative. The glossy screen is just as annoying as my Mac's, but no one is making matte screens anymore. You can open the lid with one finger slowly, but near the top, the keyboard starts to lift.

KEYBOARD/TOUCHPAD:

Like most laptops, you annoyingly need two hands to adjust volume and LCD brightness, one to press the Fn key and another to hit the arrow keys that are way on the other side. I really miss the illuminated keyboard of the Mac, but at this price point, I can't be too hard on the Acer. Unlike the Mac, the Acer will not just wake from sleep when you open the screen, i.e. you'll have to press a key to wake it. One big downside is that I snagged the "E" key and ripped it right off, but luckily it snapped back in.The upside to a Windows-centric keyboard versus Win7 on a Mac is that you get a proper Backspace key, Print Screen, Pg Up/Down, a CTRL key on the right side and I'm glad the left CTRL is on the far bottom left, outside of the Fn key, how it should be. The touchpad, while not as responsive as the Mac's glass trackpad, is probably as good as it gets for a non-mac. The scrolling area on the right side of the touchpad is pretty snappy to use, but two-finger scrolling is not very useful to me as there is a noticeable delay.

NETWORKING:

The wireless on this is also very good and I am able to connect at 300Mbps at work and it has excellent range, even extending to my garage which my Mac could barely reach. If you can't see the Bluetooth options, you have to press Fn+F3 and turn it on first. I haven't tried the WiDi, but it's nice to know it has it. There is a SIM card slot, but I don't think there's any hardware in there for US models. Of course the LAN port is gigabit capable.

PORTS:

The USB ports will all charge your phone even while the laptop is sleeping or shutdown, although I noticed that the USB 3.0 port power is interrupted for a second if you close the lid to put it to sleep. The two USB 2.0 ports don't do this. The HDMI 1.4a port supports 7.1 digital audio and 120Hz 3D video via both the Intel HD3000 and the nVidia GT540M. The VGA port is useful if you have to make a presentation with an old projector that only has VGA. The spring loaded SD card slot needed a driver update the driver to recognize my 32GB SDHC card.

GAMING:

I installed Starcraft 2 and at the native resolution 1366x768, I'm able to set most things to high (40-60fps). With Saint's Row The Third, I could run everything on high at a very smooth 30-40fps, however, the bloom, HDR and other advanced effects were too much for the GT 540M and things would drop to about 15fps. Left 4 Dead on max, liquid smooth. The problem is trying to get games to use the Nvidia card instead of the Intel integrated graphics so you have to force it in the Nvidia control panel. While on batteries, you can run games with the nVidia GT540M but you have to turn off PowerSmart with the "P" button on the right. Then games configured to run with the 540M will do so. Gaming battery life is about 1:45. If frame rates drop dramatically, a quick ALT-TAB sometimes confirms that the CPU has reached 88C and has throttled to 1.1GHz even on a hard desk surface. I've found that if you raise the area under the laptop where intake vent is, you can keep things a little cooler, ~82C and it won't throttle.

UPGRADES:

I upgraded to a 160GB Intel Solid State Drive (SSD) and 8GB of RAM and the install was incredibly easy. Just remove one screw and slide the cover down (it's easiest to push on the speaker grilles to slide it out). With the SSD, programs open instantaneously and Windows boots in about 15 seconds (after BIOS screen). In addition to the huge improvement in system response and shock-resistance, the SSD makes the laptop dead silent and vibration free as the fan rarely turns on.

The Lenovo branded Panasonic UJ-242 9.5mm slim Blu-Ray writer is a perfect drop in replacement for the stock Matshita UJ8A2 and will even accept the original Acer drive's faceplate. Windows recognized it right away as a Matshita BD-RE UJ242. This drive can write dual layer Blu-Ray discs at 2X and practically every other format under the sun and basically completes the feature-set. To replace the drive, simply remove one screw under the laptop that holds the drive in, and it just slides out! You can use a paper clip to eject the drive tray and pull the whole unit out. Then transfer the "L" bracket over. Easy as pie.

Lastly, I added a faux carbon fiber Protective Decal Skin skins Sticker for Acer TimelineX AS4830T 14 inch screen case cover AS4830T-Ltop2PS-12 (I posted pics of mine).

Got this a couple days ago and am satisfied thus far. It's a budget laptop for sure. The screen will be difficult to see in direct sunlight as it reflects a lot. You can make it a decent cheap machine though by adding in some extra ram and maybe even putting a ssd sata 3 in it. For less than $50 I upgraded the RAM to 8gb and saw a substantial jump in the windows ratings.

This is the ram kit bought. However, this kit gives you 2 4gb sticks of identical ram to what it came with. Same samsung serial number and everything. You really only need 1, so if you can find one... go for it.

Sony VAIO S Series SVS1311BFXW 13.3-Inch Laptop (White)

This is my second vaio. after going through all the options on amazon i chose this one for the smaller size and significantly lighter weight than my last one. I decided that since i use the laptop mostly in bed or travel the size and weight was the first priority. I love how light it is and the battery life is amazing. My last one got down to about an hour and this is such an improvment. My only real complaint and it is a big one is the track pad. It is so annoying. Instead of the traditional pc right and left click buttons they have emulated the mac style trackpad and it is a disaster. So what if you can swipe, flip pictures and pinch the screen bigger and smaller when everytime you just want to click on a hyperlink or open a new tab it left clicks when you want to right and vise/versa. There doesn't seem to be a consistant place on the pad where you can guarantee it's going to do what you want it to do. When I bought my son his second vaio i made sure it had the traditional split keys below the track pad because it would have driven crazy. I wish I had known but i'm suffering through since i like everything about it. you have been warned!

I've only been using it a few weeks, but I'm happy with the purchase.

I needed to make a few adjustments to become happy, though. Out of the box, it was VERY slow for an i5, mostly due to the Sony bloatware. Even after I removed the majority of the Sony bloatware, it still didn't seem as quick as it should be. I decided to upgrade the HDD to a solid state drive. I put in an Intel 520 series 180 GB, which although is smaller, it's more than I need for a part time portable laptop (I did check with Sony and they indicated swapping out the HDD would void the warranty, but if I had issues I could easily put the old one back in for service). I also added in another 8 GB memory chip (12 GB total now). The SSD and more RAM difference was huge. The laptop is now MUCH quicker and boots up and shuts down in less than 15-20 seconds.

Overall, it's hard to call it an ultrabook at 3.8 pounds, but it is very light and portal for a laptop that has an optical drive. I agree with others that most of the time, you don't really use an optical drive on a laptop, but it sure is better to have a built-in one than external on the few times you usually need it.

The display is a matte finish and more than adequete. I've seen clearer displays with a gloss screen, but it's clear enough, plus you don't get and glare or reflections with the matte finish. I like the white finish more than I originally thought I would. I also like the back-lit keyboard, but if I did have a complaint about it, it would be using it during the day. The keyboard keys are gray and the light is white. If it is not substantially dark, it is hard to read the keys. There are settings so you can set to only turn on the back-lit light when it detects darkness.

The mouse pad is a little sensitive, but after using it for a little while. It's not the best I've ever used (MacBook), but it's not the worst I've ever used.

I picked up the laptop during Amazon's lightning deals during Thanksgiving, and I'm happy with the purchase for $629. For me it was between this laptop and a ASUS Zenbook UX31E-DH52. The ASUS lost out due to being $300 more, having Windows 8, had so-so reviews (a lot of complaints about touchpad), and there seemed to be some concern that HDD's were harder to upgrade due to proprietary connectors.

i bought this computer from Amazon warehouse in used-very good condition. i am extremely happy with the physical condition of the laptop. it looks brand new and the laptop itself is beautiful. i absolutely love the white, and it's the perfect size. now to the frustrating part... windows had been reinstalled so it isn't factory. none of the Sony drivers were included... this sucks, because there are quite a few features that won't work without them. for instance, the track pad was awful, painfully slow, and wouldn't do any of the things described (pinch to zoom etc) until i installed the proper driver from Sony support. missing battery drivers keep forcing hibernation. i couldn't even follow the steps in the start up guide because none of the top buttons will work without drivers. there are numerous other drivers that need to be downloaded as well, and some of them just won't install without the factory version of windows. I've had the laptop for 3 days now and I've spent those days chatting, emailing, and phoning Sony support trying to resolve issues without much luck. i really do love it, but i think i might have to return it if i can't get it running properly... also, if you are expecting any of the software mentioned in the description, it's not there either... I'd love to just do a clean factory reset, but you have to buy the disks from Sony, and i wasn't really expecting to have to put this much time and money into something i was planning on enjoying right out of the box.

I purchased this laptop for my college daugther. It is replacing a 5 year Toshiba laptop that is still going strong, but wanted to upgrade her to a newer CPU model. It's the third Toshiba laptop I've purchased (my other daughter has another 3 year old model). This is a great laptop! I have had mine for about a year now, no problems with anything, the only bad thing is the weight of the laptop and the size of its ac adapter, but that doesn't bother me but might be a hassle to others...besides that great and i would reccomend this.

AS far as the Laptop is concern it great and works for my needs (Photography) I got two of these;.when compare to other gameing laptops Alienware and such This still holds its own. This is a great computer i brought mine back in 09 or something like that, and it still works like a champ. It plays 2011 games on high graphics settings; also i do plan to give it a upgrade at the end of this year so it can last a few more years. The screen, the sound quality, the durability, and the four usb drives makes this a great computer.

One down fall is the mouse pad, i get very upset when my palm hits the pad and the computer registers that as me wanting to fire, or attack. other than that this is a good buy, a fair price for this computer as is would be 200-420. there is a refurbished one for sale, that might be an upgraded version, but if not i would not recommend it.

HP Envy 14-1260SE Beats Edition Notebook (Black)

This is one sweet machine. So far not a single problem with the software or hardware. A couple of caveats to that: The battery lasts about one hour while working and about two hours sitting idle. I contacted HP about this and it is a known problem. HP assured me that when the problem is resolved they will let me (and all owners) know what the fix is and repair it at their cost if necessary. It may just be a BIOS update or a different battery; we'll see, and I'll update when I know more. You can (and should) order the "slice" (HP 6-cell Slim Fit Battery for Envy 14-1000 Series (RS06)) secondary battery. This will boost the working time to about four hours including the original battery. Once they resolve the battery issue, I hope to get about eight hours out of the two battery configuration. Second, the touchpad takes a little getting used to. The right and left click buttons are built into the touchpad and the pointer will move while trying to click, but I've pretty much gotten the hang of it now. Finally, back in November or December HP went to a two-year warranty for all ENVY computers, however, not all serial numbers were updated. When mine arrived the "HP Support Assistant" software said my warranty was up in one year. A short phone call to (an English speaking person in Canada) got my warranty changed to the stated two years. If you have this issue, just give them a call; my experience with customer service was better than any I've experienced in a long time (BTW they also gave me a $125 credit towards the "slice" battery bringing the cost of the second battery to less than $50.00).

So, that's all the issues I've had with this machine and all are easily fixed (or gotten used to). The machine itself is beautiful. The back-lit keyboard is awesome and easy to use, comfortable on the hands. The display is bright and crisp. The sound out of the built-in speakers is better than any other laptop I've owned, but they are still laptop speakers. To get the full benefit out of the Beats Audio setup you need to plug into headphones or an external amplified speaker system. The clock speed (CPU) is outstanding, programs open in the blink of an eye and I run a lot of "heavy" software like photoshop, cad programs, and accounting software. I can have multiple programs running at the same time and have never noticed a slowdown. I don't even know what the limit is before I'll notice any slowdown. One other benefit of this machine (and there are probably plenty of other manufacturers with the same benefit) is that you can plug in an external drive or flashdrive and tell the system to use it as system memory. So, if you have 6 GB of system memory and add a 10 GB flashdrive you'll have 16 GB of system memory. Pretty sweet!

Bottom line, I would recommend this machine to anyone (especially those with their heads stuck in an Apple)! I plan to buy a silver one for my wife. Outstanding laptop and outstanding customer support.

I'm extremely happy I went with the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition laptop. I'm not one of those people that, when they need a new laptop, just runs to Staples and gets a crappy $400 laptop. But I'm also not one of those people who has the money to go to the apple store to get a $2000 laptop.

I'm one of those people who really spends a lot of time researching to find out which is the best laptop I can get, and for the best value -and I think this is it.

I know $1000-$1100 is still a lot for a laptop, but you really are getting a high performance, extremely portable, and sleek laptop. I was looking at the MBPros, which in my opinion, are the best "physically" designed laptops on the market, and this is actually pretty comparable. The fan is certainly louder, and it's not quite as thin as a MBPro, but design-wise it's a close second. Not only that, but the black and red back-lit keyboard really looks nice.

Performance wise, it has been awesome -extremely fast, battery life is around 4 hrs if you are actually running program, listening to music, etc, and the storage is probably more than you will ever need.

Ultimately I needed a PC no matter what because of the plethora of MS programs I run, but, if I had a choice, I would still definitely go with this. You get the performance of one of those $2000 MBPros for about half the price. (And to be honest, Windows 7 is pretty damn close to Mac OS in a lot of ways).

I got this laptop few days after old ACER stopped working(worked 4 yrs pretty well). This one is really really good one. I recommend this laptop to every one(even the apple fans who think that there is no other laptop that can be more powerful). Yes this one is really a good & powerful one with a 6GB DDR3 memory and Intel Core i5-480M Processor 2.66GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.93 GHz.

I didn't find any issues so far in this one. It loads games really fast, has a crispy image screen and it has a nice graphics card(ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 switchable graphics with 1024MB DDR3 with up to 3738MB total graphics memory). I love the way it shutdown the machine just in about 10 seconds and takes about 20 seconds to start. The beats audio is really awesome. I have Bose In-ear head phones and i listen to high end quality of music in it.

It has all the features for every one graphics, speed, camera, bluetooth, HD audio and display.

This one rocks all the way. I am waiting for the battery issue as it runs about an hour on battery against the said 6.5hrs.

Once it is resolved this one be a sure winner.

Finally an awesome laptop totally satisfied.....

I have been shopping for a new notebook for a few months now. And after countless reviews I read, I finally decided to give the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition my final answer.

I received the notebook today, and it performed well until...

MY POWER BRICK FAILED WITHIN THE FIRST FEW HOURS OF MY USE.

The brick was plugged into a surge protector, and I was careful enough to charge the battery fully before I even powered it on.

As I was using it, I noticed a crackling sound coming from the the power unit. Next thing I know, the notebook switched into battery mode.

After troubleshooting the usual (another outlet, removing battery, rebooting computer, etc), I gave up and finally decided to call HP.

I remembered that as an HP Envy owner, there was a dedicated line to reach technical support. I placed the call and pressed one button for Envy owners. The call took about 5 minutes to reach an actual person. Not too bad.

As I was talking with the tech support, they had me go through the usual trouble shooting as well (which I gladly did). After 3 different unsuccessful cures, I was told that I had a defective AC Adapter.

Since the product was still in warranty, they offered to send me a new AC Adapter at no charge. Of course, before taking my address and shipping information, they had to offer an accidental warranty to me.

The call took about 45 mins, and the result is that HP is shipping me a new AC Adapter via FED EX NEXT DAY.

What can I say? I am pleased with HP for standing behind their products, but also disappointed that the product failed so soon.

BOTTOM LINE: YOU MIGHT NOT BE THE ENVY OF EVERYONE AROUND YOU IF AND WHEN YOUR AC ADAPTER FAILS ON YOUR HP ENVY 14 BEATS EDITION.

I received this laptop a few days ago and so far I love it.

Many reviews you'll find online talk about the screen and picture quality to be the laptops only downfall, but..I don't see the issue.

There are only 2 things I don't like about the laptop.

One, the battery life is pretty..well, awful. I'm at 75% and only have 51 estimated minutes remaining...hm? Could be a faulty battery, though..not sure.

Second, as others have said..it's certainly a fingerprint magnet.

This machine is not a performance powerhouse by any means, but it is a fairly priced good quality machine.

We bought this for our daughter about a month ago directly from HP, and it meets all of her needs. Yes, the screen could be higher resolution, the processor could be faster, and the hard drive speed could be faster, but all those things would add a lot to the price.

The battery life on this computer has been about 5 hours during normal use. We've only had an opportunity to fully test that (going from full to empty) twice, so it may vary depending on what you are doing and your settings.

This machine has Windows 8 installed on it, which is true of almost all new computers now. We definitely prefer most things about Windows 7 to Windows 8, although some things have been improved such as the task manager. (The task manager is that program that opens when you hit Control-Shift-Escape that tells you what programs and processes are running and how you computer is performing. They've added a ton of functionality to that feature of Windows.) Things that we don't like, such as the new start screen, aren't that big of a deal to get around. Overall, Windows 8 isn't a reason to dislike this computer, in my opinion. It takes a little getting used to, but overall it has as much good as it does bad, and we will eventually get used to or find work arounds for the few bad things.

This machine is a good value. It isn't blazing fast, but does web surfing and office applications just fine. If you are looking for a gaming machine, look elsewhere and plan to spend double what this laptop costs. If you are looking for a well made, basic machine, with a 17 inch screen than you won't be disappointed here.

We bought this laptop for my mom who is 82. She's quite computer literate for an old lady! She's mastered Windows 8 already! She just needs it for word processing and internet use (yes, she's on FB!) so this laptop is fine for her. It's a good value for a basic laptop! Not for gaming or anything high-tech, but fine for her!

A decent PC for the price, but there are several negat1ves to be aware of:

network port is NOT gigabit, it is only 10/100. So if you will be copying large files to this PC over a wired gigabit network (as most people do these days), then the transfer rate will be SLOW.

The keyboard lacks the standard inverted-T layout for the arrow keys. Most people that use the arrow keys for navigating spreadsheets, gaming, etc would consider the inverted-T arrangement very important.

Users Manual on the HP site is one-size fits all, it is NOT specific to this model of PC. Much of what is in the manual does not pertain to this PC.

Downloadable drivers on the HP site are for 64-bit Windows 8 only. So if you want to install Windows 7 on this PC, you could have a problem.

How long does the battery last? The answer is anyone's guess, because HP does not mention this anywhere. Also, what is the replacement lithium battery pack for this PC? Who knows, because the HP website does not have this information either.

My desktop computer is 17.5 inches so I thought a laptop that large would have a fare sized keyboard. It don't and they moved the location of important keys in relation to your hand position. They marked the 'F' keys as if they were a secret. The keyboard has reduced me to a hunt and peck typist.

The computer itself is quite satisfactory and has only one draw back. That is that it comes with Windows 8 (no choice and no disk). I have been using Windows for over twenty five years through many revisions. At 76, I can still hold my own on a PC, but this Windows 8 has stopped me in my tracks. I am just getting in programs and info that should have been done by the second day. HP and MS solve any question by putting the computer back to the condition that it arrived in. Windows 8 does not have a restore point that can be set and returned to. The preloaded data keeps trying to sell you something and there are no straight answers on how to backup your hard earned settings for retrieval. It is too big a step to go from a PC to this Pavillion and a crazy operating system like Windows 8.

If I could return it, I would, although there is nothing wrong with the computer other that the keyboard and the fact that I could not get my McAfee downloaded for hours and hours and could have gotten infected as the router setup was almost immediate. The viewing screen can not be taken past 90 degrees and makes you look at it from and angle. I fixed that by turning the laptop 'Targus' cooler backward and angling the keyboard. That didn't bother me as its layout has reduced me to hunt and peck.

I give HP (A good company) three stars and MS a minus three stars for trying to be a Macintosh, which I love but can not afford.

I received my HP, and am still gettng used to all the features. I don't like Windows 8, but in fairness it has only been a short time. The one disappointment is the casing of this HP doesn't have the stability of my last two hp's. The hard drive is on the right side close to the front and when I pick up the computer, it seems as if it would be easy to crack or break. I am happy with the speaker's the volume is pretty good. Picture quality is also good. For the price I would recommend this computer, my order came with an upgrade to 6 mb for the memory.
