Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5303 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch HD Display Screen / AMD Dual-Core E-300 1

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5303 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch HD Display Screen / AMD Dual-Core E-300 1.3 GHz Processor / 2GB DDR3 RAM Memory / 320GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW / 6-cell Battery / Webcam / Windows 8 / Satin BlackThis Laptop is everything you would expect It to be. Giving that your expectations are good. I've read some reviews and everyone seemed to hate this laptop. I love it, I've had it for maybe a week now and nothing has gone wrong so far.

Pros:

. Beautiful Operating System (Windows 8), So fluid and fast

. The 2GB RAM is not bad at all

. Stunning Graphics on the Start Menu (Tiles)

. Lots of apps, makes it feel like a really big tablet(Not a TOUCH SCREEN!)

Cons:

. Only one, The gaming capabilities for games such as runescape and World of Warcraft is not great, works, but is not al that due to the 1.3 Ghz processor

We got this for our middle-schooler as her first laptop & it's just right for her. And it was just right for our budget!

Very frustrating computer. Not too impressed with the speed or how it functions. My entire family regrets this purchase. Be prepared for frustrations.

I got this laptop really cheap at best buy ($242.99). It was brand new on clearance. I did not accept EULA for Windows 8, instead installed Fedora Linux on it. Works great except for the wireless card. I think I can get it working with ndiswrapper. It needs more memory and that's about it. The speakers aren't loud but if I normalize the volume or use head phones, they are acceptable.

My key requirements are:

1. I want to run Linux, not Windows

2. I don't want to play games on it (I have an Ultimate Gaming Machine {UGM} desktop)

3. Perfect for surfing the web and watching movies

If I could get the wireless to work, I will be golden.

--------------

Update (21 February 2013): Wireless works out of the box with Fedora 18. The kernel packaged with Fedora 14 did not support wireless.

As the title states, this machine spends most of its time rebooting. I find myself using my old laptop more than this new one. Check emails, computer crash. Download something, computer crash. Let it sit there for hours, computer crash. This is a fresh install and is very frustrating. But don't get me wrong. When it runs it runs great for a Low End Laptop. Just not worth the stress. Save yourself the Stress and time and pay a little more for one with a faster CPU.

Lenovo 14" Core i3 320GB HDD Notebook

Lenovo 14' Core i3 320GB HDD NotebookThe Edge provides what I expected the best typing experience available, bar none. The battery runs twice as long as the usual multimedia laptops in this price range 5 to 6 hours, which really makes me happy, as you could just leave the power cord at home.

The machine feels heavy to carry around, even at 2.2 Kgs, it needs to shed atleast half a kilo to feel even remotely portable, getting rid of the dvd drive should be the first thing to do. Maybe I'll ask the service center guys to remove it.

The main disappointment is how slow the boot is, how slow the hard drive is. Often the windows explorer fails to display files in a folder! It takes eons to display the folder contents at times, and thats super frustrating! Overall speed once the system is running is perfectly fine, browser tabs and office software run fast enough, but you do see the system running slow from time to time, I'm guessing a very slow hard drive as the culprit.

Since they dont give you a Windows dvd, I've tried reinstalling from the recovery partition but have failed. Will take it to the service center for reinstall, and hope the machine runs faster after removing the lenovo bloatware.

The machine ran very cool for the first 4 months, and has just started to get mildly warm now. You wont hear the fan running at all though, very silent machine, except the clackety of the keyboard.

And yeah, the touchpad is useless, doesnt register clicks most of the time, and this is a Thinkpad!

It has common Lenovo issue with fan, which is increasing and decreasing all the time, and it's a lil bit annoying. Other than that it's ok

I gave this to my mother -what a horrible out-of box experience. She was confused by all the bloatware, the updates failed and the disk got corrupted, so now it goes through check disk and a failed update every time she starts it. So now I think she'll have use the recovery partition and start again from scratch. My advice -spend the extra money and get a Mac. It's worth it.

Toshiba Satellite L855-S5244 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mercury Silver)

Toshiba Satellite L855-S5244 15.6-Inch LaptopWhen I first bought the Toshiba Satellite in the summer of 2012, it was the most powerful computer at Best Buy. This computer was marketed at $850, but was only $750 at that time. Even at the discounted price, this is a wonderful computer. The Toshiba anti-theft and virus software has gotten me out of many problems that killed off my previous computers. It is very fast, and very reliable. The computer screen is beautiful, the number pad is a great addition, and the hardrive protection is wonderful. However, it isn't flawless. On more than one occasion, this computer has overheated due to it's metal body. The computer will automatically shut off protecting it, which is good, but the fact that it does it at all, isn't good. I've had this issue with my Xbox where it'd do that and turn off randomly during a game. It's worse with this because I use my computer for important things, like generating essays. Another problem is that the trackpad is very glitchy. I'd definitely reccomend a USB plugin mouse for this. I've only gotten the bluescreen once, and that was due to a software issue from one of the programs I've installed on here not being configured properly. So if you want a cheap and fast computer, I'd reccomend this over the MacBook Pro any day.

After careful research, on October 24, 2012, I bought online from Toshiba Direct a Toshiba Satellite L850 customized laptop for roughly $844 with taxes. I received it 2 weeks later but was out of town on work, so when the package was officially opened, it was after the 15 day "full refund" time period. What irony?! Well, I opened it, it worked fine the first time and the next morning, when turning on again, I got the "blue screen" treatment that so many other unhappy Toshiba buyers have experienced. I called Toshiba and got the scripted customer service replies for the next few days with no resolve. To be clear, I said I want to return it each time because I knew from former reviews that this was not going to just go away. No one helped at Toshiba's customer or tech service phone support and when I asked to speak with a supervisor, I was told they would have to call me back within 2 business days. Seriously? Well, that also didn't happen. So, I've now had the Toshiba laptop opened and out of the box for officially 3 weeks at this point, can't return it for a full refund, can't get sales or tech support to solve the problem, and can't get upper level supervisors to speak to me. Any wonder how I feel about spending $844 on this piece of garbage? It get's better too. Toshiba now wants to charge me shipping costs to send the laptop to their repair facility and perhaps within 2 more weeks, they'll tell me all of this is NOT under warranty and for a mere $200 more, they can fix it. Well, I decided I wasn't going to give them the option to fail me yet again. I took the laptop to a STORE (Best Buy) and spoke face to face with a PERSON (in their Geek Squad) and they ran a diagnostic in 1 day and yes, $200 later, fixed the blue screen problem and removed the spyware and adware that was also on the system too. One more thing; this is the first review I've ever written. Spending the five minutes of time to write this review will be worthwhile only if other online buyers don't also get fooled into wasting their time or money buying a Toshiba.

I bought this as a desktop-replacement for my wife for $460 Nov 2012. Not sure why the price is higher now. You can find a higher performing toshiba than this for $680.

PROS:

Quality and durable hardware.

Textured D-Pad

Moderate windows 7 performance

CONS:

Be prepared to uninstall 10+ preinstalled toshiba bloatware.

Hassled constantly to purchase an antivirus program when Microsoft Security Essentials provides it for free.

Basic no-frills laptop that's great after an hour of uninstalling programs.

HP 2000-417NR 15.6" Notebook (1.3 GHz AMD Dual-Core E-300 Accelerated Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB H

HP 2000-417NR 15.6' Notebook A7A75UA#ABAive had this computer since February, and i gotta say it has impressed me, though the processor is kinda lacking, it is a pretty sturdy little machine, and it gets FANTASTIC battery life, my only real complaint is that the network card likes to fail at completely random times, probably an isolated incident, as ive never heard of any of these doing that, but over all, for the price, this is an impressive laptop, i like it alot

this is the slowest computer I have ever used. Worthless for anything more than word processing, or simple spreadsheet. Opening pages, or control panel panes or just about anything results in painfully long delays. I have given up on hp products, as I have seen a steady decline in quality over the years. Invest your hard-earned dollars in a comparably priced Lenovo for a much better value.

We purchased these for the teachers at our school. As the IT guy I got to put our software on them. Windows 7 is already a challenge for those who aren't tech savy so that aside while setting these machines up for use lets put it this way. As I said in the description. Slower than a tumbleweed on a calm day.

Save your money and your sanity. HP missed the mark once again.

HP EliteBook Folio 9470m 14" Business Notebook PC - C6Z62UT

HP EliteBook Folio 9470m 14' Business Notebook PC - C6Z62UTThis was one of the few out there where you can upgrade the memory beyond 4 gb...16 gb! I upgraded and am ready to keep this laptop for years to come. Not to mention they sent Windows 7 (all versions) and Windows 8 for you to choose from! The scroll pad is top notch, the body is light, the monitor clear and precise. And the speed...16 gb...can I say more? Don't upgrade to 16 gb from HP, order from Crucial and put it in yourself. I saved $300! I also ordered the extra battery and the optical player (just in case I need it). Oh, and theres hardly any bloatware. HP did it right with this one!

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF122FX/B F Series 16.4" Notebook PC - Black

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF122FX/B F Series 16.4' Notebook PC - BlackI'm giving this one 3 stars. I don't see the big speed improvement when compared to my 2 year old Dell. Then again, I haven't tried any games that would take advantage of the 1G video card or heavy processor intensive work. I mainly use it for everyday use like email, MS Office, browsing, running a web site, etc.

Things I don't like:

Keyboard: It takes getting use to. Typing on the raised keys is defintly diffenent then the conventional keyboards.

Hard drive: Not the fastest at 5400rpm. I might upgrade to either with a SSD or a 7200rpm HD. Also, you can hear the HD spinning, reading and writing under the keyboard. Clicking sounds are a little annoying.

Memory: Only comes with 4G when it could support max of 8G. Comes with 2x2G and if you need to upgrade, you need to pull out the existing memory. It's a waste of money.

Weight: Little on the heavy side.

Comes with a Blu-Ray reader and not a Blu-Ray burner

Bloatware: :Added Value" or not, I've uninstalled tons of unwanted software.

Back-lit keyboard (goes off after few seconds. Can't leave it on all the time)

Things I like:

Large screen, 16.4"

Ease of making backup media in case the hard drive crashes. You'll need 3 DVDs.

Back-lit keyboard (makes it easier to see the letters in the dimmly lit room)

Price; I got mine really cheap as I bought it as an opened box and it was a previously retuned item.

Bottomline: Not a bad machine; I wouldn't have bought it for the full price;

Bought this laptop a year ago and of course after the one year warranty, things go south.

The laptop is flimsy, as the majority of the case is made from plastic. When you pick this thing up, you can feel and hear this thing cracking and flexing. Not Good.

As a result of the flimsy case, components began failing. First the blue ray player went out, but not completely, it still plays blue rays and burns DVDs and cds. It just won't read regular US DVDs. I've reformatted the hard drive, installed all updates, and cleaned it and everything under the sun! After contacting sonny about the problem they recommended the drive needs to be replaced.

Second, the hard drive failed after I reinstalled everything after the failure of the blue ray drive. Luckily I had an extra 320 gig laying around. The disk drive's failure was mechanical, possibly due to the lack of internal support or shock absorbing properties of the case itself. I do not travel much; it's a shame after about 4 trips in a backpack the drive/s fail.

After the hard drive and blue ray drive failures, I was convinced things were ok again. Wrong. As I am Skyping the wife, in mid sentence, the keyboard and touch pad quit working. I'm thinking virus, although I have up to date Norton, driver failure or something. After troubleshooting every software possibility, it turned out the ribbon that connects the display buttons and keyboard, have a bad connection. I wiggled the ribbon, which is located under the speaker panel by the caps lock lights, and the keyboard came back. The touch pad, however still does not work. So I took it all apart to find that a manufacturing flaw caused the ribbon of the touchpad to be pinched between the case. Over the course of a year, the thin and flimsy ribbon wore through.

I use a Bluetooth mouse so I had to borrow a usb mouse to install my Bluetooth mouse, but now everything is working, except the touch pad of course.

With how unreliable this computer is, I would never use it to type an important document, you never know when this thing will fail you. I'm going to give it to my 6 year old to play with.

On the plus side, despite the slow hard drive, the processor, graphics, ram and esata port are great.

The display is fuzzy, not very clear.

Never again Sony.

I purchased a Sony Vaio VPCF122FX and I'm not happy with it. It seems to be running hot all the time. The cooling fan is very noisy and you cannot watch a video or listen to music without this high pitch noisy fan running in the background. I've used a DELL E6400 laptop and it is super quiet by comparison, regardless of how many windows I've got open or applications I've got running.

HP Pavilion G7-2235DX AMD A8-4500M X4 1.9GHz 4GB 640GB DVD+/-RW 17.3" Windows 8 (Black)

HP Pavilion G7-2235DX AMD A8-4500M X4 1.9GHz 4GB 640GB DVD+/-RW 17.3' Windows 8laptop is good but does not have a lighted keyboard as in the description. had some problems with Norton blocking internet access.

I purchased this as a temporary laptop as I saved up for a more expensive and powerful computer. But upon first use I was surprised by this laptop's power and efficiency. The screen is beautiful. Not something I was expecting. Also the AMD A8 APU provides more then enough juice for watching movies and playing modern games on low or medium settings. Everything about this laptop is great. My only complaint is that upon 2 occasions this laptop has become hot to the point of being uncomfortable. This temperature was reached after playing games for about 4 hours straight, but still...it was hot. Other than the heat, I have no complaints and I am completely satisfied with this computer.
